Mosques In Haridwar, Gorakhpur Change Friday Prayer Timings On Holi
Mar 11, 2025
The festival of Holi this year coincides with the second Friday of the month of Ramzan.(Sourced)
------------
Mosques in Uttarakhand's Haridwar and Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur have postponed the timings of Friday Namaz prayers on March 14, the day of the Holi festival.
Haridwar Superintendent of Police Pankaj Gairola confirmed that a meeting with community representatives resulted in the decision to hold Friday prayers after 2.30 pm.
"We called representatives of both sides from the nearby Jwalapur area. A decision has been made that the Friday Namaz will be offered after 2.30 pm. The timings of Holika Dahan were also discussed... This was a successful meeting. If anyone tries to hamper the law and order situation, then strict action will be taken," SP Gairola was quoted as saying by ANI.
"Zones and sectors have been created in the entire district in which adequate police arrangements are being made," he added.
Maulana Arif Qasmi of Jamia Ulama Uttarakhand also emphasised the unity between Hindus and Muslims in the region.
"Because peace in the area is very important, both Hindus and Muslims have gathered here today. In our area, there has never been a situation of conflict. We have all decided that the Friday prayers in the city's mosques will be held at 2:30 pm," Maulana Qasmi said, according to ANI.
In Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur, Mufti Munawwar Raza, the Imam of the Mubarak Khan Dargah also announced that Friday prayers would be held post 2pm to avoid any conflict.
"Each prayer has its significance. Now, since both festivals fall on the same day, a meeting was held here, and it was decided that the prayer time will be set after 2 pm" he said.
The festival of Holi this year coincides with the second Friday of the month of Ramzan.
Last week, Sambhal Circle Officer Anuj Chaudhury kicked off a row after he said that the Holi festival comes once a year, whereas Friday prayers take place 52 times a year. “If anyone feels uncomfortable with the colours of Holi, they should stay indoors on that day,” he had said.
The opposition Samajwadi Party has accused the police official of acting as an agent of the BJP.

Baloch Militants Using Women, Children As Human Shields Hindering Bolan Train Rescue; 27 Terrorists Killed, 155 Hostages Rescued

-------------
Security forces have successfully freed at least 155 hostages and eliminated 27 terrorists who had hijacked the Jaffar Express in Balochistan's Bolan district, pledging to continue the operation until the last militant is defeated.
The train, carrying 400 passengers in nine bogies, was en route from Quetta to Peshawar on Tuesday when an unknown number of terrorists took passengers hostage, security forces said.
Security sources said that forces were continuing the operation to rescue the remaining hostages. They said that terrorists, some of them wearing suicide jackets, were using passengers as human shields, security sources revealed.
Due to the presence of hostages, security forces are proceeding with extreme caution, the sources added.
One of the freed passengers thanked the forces for safely evacuating him from the hijacked train and acknowledged the efforts of the army and FC personnel in security operation.
“There was gunfire, but by the grace of Allah, the army and FC personnel brought us to safety,” said one of the rescued passengers.
Meanwhile, railway officials said that the Bolan Mail and Jaffar Express, operating from Quetta to other parts of the country, have been suspended for three days. The decision to suspend train services was taken following the attack on the Jaffar Express in Bolan, according to railway authorities.
Additionally, the passenger train from Quetta to Chaman has also not yet departed, railway officials stated.
Earlier, railway officials reported that 57 rescued passengers from the Jaffar Express were transported to Quetta in the early hours of Wednesday, while 23 remained in Machh.
After security forces launched the operation on Tuesday, the militants split into small groups, security sources said. Seventeen injured passengers were taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Navigating the difficult terrain, security forces cordoned off the area upon receiving word of the attack, they said, adding that despite the challenging route, forces reached the scene in the Mushqaf area of the Bolan district of Balochistan to initiate the operation.
Sources further revealed that the attackers were using satellite phones to communicate with international handlers, including a mastermind in Afghanistan, and were using women and children as human shields, forcing extreme caution in the operation.
The attackers bombed the railway track before storming the train and opened fire on the locomotive, injuring the driver. The train, stopped just before a tunnel, was hijacked in a remote, mountainous region near the Afghanistan-Iran border.
Emergency measures
The Balochistan government has imposed emergency measures, and all institutions have been mobilised to deal with the situation, spokesperson Shahid Rind said.
A relief train and contingents of security forces were also dispatched to the site.
Meanwhile, an emergency has been imposed in Sibi and Civil Hospital Quetta.
According to the provincial health department, all medical and paramedical staff have been summoned to Civil Hospital and several wards were vacated to deal with the situation.
Following the incident, an emergency information desk has been established at Quetta Railway Station.
A railway official was appointed to share relevant developments regarding the Jaffar Express incident.
Condemnations pour in
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have strongly condemned the terrorist attack on the Jaffar Express and praised the security forces for their effective and timely response.
The president lauded the valour of security forces for rescuing the passengers of Jaffar Express and said that attacks on innocent civilians and passengers were inhuman and condemnable acts.
The Baloch nation strongly opposed those elements who had taken unarmed passengers, elders and children as hostage, he added.
President Zardari said neither any religion nor a society allowed such repugnant acts. He also prayed for the early recovery of those who sustained injuries during the attack.
Meanwhile, the prime minister said that officers and personnel of the forces were eliminating terrorists with bravery during the ongoing response.
He added that despite difficult terrain, the morale of the security forces was high, and they were pushing back the cowardly terrorists with their timely action.
PM Shehbaz expressed the hope that the security operation would soon meet with success and the terrorists would be eliminated, PM Office Media Wing said in a press release.
He said that the inhuman terrorists who launched the cowardly assault at Jaffar Express at Dhdhar-Bolan Pass did not deserve any concession. Terrorists were the enemies of progress and development of Balochistan province.
The premier said targeting of innocent passengers in the holy and blessed month of Ramadan proved it clearly that terrorists had no relation with Islam, Pakistan and Balochistan.
He also expressed the resolve of continuation of fight against terrorism till complete eradication of this specter from the country.
Any conspiracy to spread chaos and lawlessness in the country would be foiled, he said, adding that they would never allow enemies of the country to succeed in their nefarious designs.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack and prayed for the early recovery of the injured people. He added: "Beasts who opened fire on innocent passengers deserve no leniency."
"Terrorists are the biggest threat to Pakistan," said Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari while condemning the attack on the passenger train.
"Targeting innocent citizens by terrorists is a coward act," he added.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur also condemned the Jaffar Express incident and expressed concern for the safety of the train passengers taken hostage in Balochistan. He expressed wishes for their safe recovery.
Awami National Party (ANP) President Aimal Wali Khan said that attacks on innocent citizens are unacceptable and demanded strict action against the terrorists.
The country witnessed a sharp increase in terror attacks in January 2025, surging by 42% compared to the previous month, according to data released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), a think tank.
The data revealed that at least 74 militant attacks were recorded nationwide, resulting in 91 fatalities, including 35 security personnel, 20 civilians, and 36 militants. Another 117 individuals sustained injuries, including 53 security forces personnel, 54 civilians, and 10 militants.
Balochistan also experienced a surge in militant activity, with at least 24 attacks, which claimed 26 lives, including 11 security personnel, six civilians, and nine militants.

Shari’ah law will enhance Nigerian justice system – Islamic scholar
12th March 2025
By Wale Akinselure
A professor of Law at the University of Ilorin, Abdulrazzaq Alaro, has reiterated calls for the broader application of Shari’ah law across Nigeria, arguing that it has the capacity to address national challenges and enhance justice in society.
Speaking at the 2025 Ramadan lecture organized by the Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria, Oyo State branch, at the Aare Afe Babalola Bar Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, on Sunday, Alaro emphasized that Shari’ah encompasses all known branches of law and contains principles best suited for regulating human conduct.
Addressing concerns over an alleged Islamization agenda, Alaro dismissed such fears as unfounded. He described opposition to Shari’ah, particularly in Southern Nigeria, as a deprivation of Muslims’ legitimate rights.
“Beyond the criminal justice system, Shari’ah encompasses various branches of law, including public and private law, business and commercial law, municipal and international law, as well as substantive and procedural law. As a Professor of Shari’ah, I can confidently state that there is no branch of law recognized by Common Law or any other legal system that is absent in Shari’ah.
“When Allah, the ultimate lawgiver, declares in the Qur’an, ‘We have neglected nothing in the Book,’ it affirms that Shari’ah laws and principles cover all past, present, and even future branches of law. If implemented properly, Shari’ah is capable of addressing our societal challenges and enhancing justice,” Alaro asserted.
Citing Islamic banking and SUKUK bonds as examples, he highlighted how Shari’ah-based financial systems have successfully contributed to public project funding.
“Since 2017, SUKUK has facilitated the development of 124 road projects covering over 5,280 kilometers across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, yet Nigeria remains a multi-religious nation,” he noted.
Alaro argued that applying Shari’ah in other aspects of governance would not alter Nigeria’s secular status.
On concerns about the punitive aspects of Shari’ah, Alaro clarified that the criminal justice system is only one component.
“Shari’ah is not solely about capital punishment or amputation, as some believe. It prioritizes deterrence over punishment. More importantly, Shari’ah offers a comprehensive legal framework that complements existing systems while ensuring justice that aligns with citizens’ religious beliefs and constitutional rights to freedom of religion and conscience,” he explained.
Emphasizing that adherence to Shari’ah is an obligation for Muslims, Alaro warned against opposing its application.
“The 1999 Constitution (as amended) guarantees freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. In any state without a Shari’ah court, Muslims cannot fully exercise their religious rights. The absence of Shari’ah Courts of Appeal in Southern states is a clear deprivation of Muslims’ constitutional rights,” he argued.
He questioned why no Southern state has established a Shari’ah court, despite the presence of sizable Muslim populations. “Are we suggesting that Muslims in these states do not deserve access to their religious legal system?” he asked.
Alaro also addressed concerns that establishing Shari’ah Courts of Appeal would lead to Islamization, calling such fears “unfounded and driven by ignorance or mischief.” He explained that Shari’ah courts would handle issues exclusively related to Muslims, including marriage, divorce, inheritance, and civil disputes.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Alaro urged Muslims to prioritize candidates who support the application of Shari’ah. “Muslim associations and stakeholders must support candidates committed to advancing Muslim affairs, including Shari’ah implementation in their states,” he declared.
Also speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria, Prof Musliu Yahya, emphasized that Muslims must align their lives with the teachings of the Qur’an and the Nigerian Constitution.
Panelist and Oyo State High Court Judge, Justice Kareem Adedokun, attributed misconceptions about Shari’ah in Southern Nigeria to ignorance and religious intolerance. He called for continuous sensitization of political leaders, clerics, and sociocultural group heads to foster understanding.
Representing the Managing Director of Lotus Bank, Mutiu Abdulsalam reaffirmed that Shari’ah is a right for Muslims and cited the success of Islamic banking and SUKUK as evidence that Shari’ah implementation does not equate to Islamization.
Chairman of the MULAN Ramadan Lecture Planning Committee, Akeem Agbaje, stressed the importance of ongoing sensitization to enhance understanding of Shari’ah’s significance for Muslims.
Other speakers pointed out contradictions in the 1999 Constitution that fail to mandate the establishment of Shari’ah Courts of Appeal in all states and called for a constitutional review.
Notable attendees included the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ibadan branch, Ibrahim Lawal; Justice Rukayat Yetunde; Justice Oladejo Akanbi; member representing Ibadan SouthWest/NorthWest federal constituency, Stanley Olajide; Oyo Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo; serving and retired justices; Islamic scholars; and clerics.

Moscow: Islamic Emirate Unshaken by Western Pressure
2025-03-11
KABUL(BNA): Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, has said that some Western donors are beginning to acknowledge that cutting humanitarian aid will not force the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan into submission.
Speaking at a UN Security Council session on Afghanistan, Nebenzya criticized certain Western nations—without naming specific countries—saying some still refuse to admit their past mistakes.
According to reports cited by Bakhtar News Agency from international media, the Russian envoy urged the global community to abandon what he described as “irrational pressure” on the Islamic Emirate. Instead, he called for practical engagement and cooperation with Afghanistan’s de facto authorities to foster stability and economic progress in the country.

Syrians flee sectarian killing into Lebanon
March 12, 2025

----------
MASOUDIYEH, Lebanon: Fearing for their lives, Syrian men, women and children waded through a river to safety in Lebanon on Tuesday, among hundreds of people who have fled to the neighboring country to escape sectarian killing targeting their Alawite community.
A woman who made the crossing on Sunday said she’d seen the bodies of seven slain people in her village. Another said she’d spent three days trapped at home by heavy gunfire. A man said militants had threatened to kill all the people in his village because they are members of the minority Alawite community.
Days after the killing began in Syria’s coastal region, the steady stream of refugees continued: Reuters reporters saw more than 50 cross the knee-high waters of the Nahr El Kabir River into Lebanon during a half-hour period on Tuesday, carrying children and whatever possessions they could gather.
Nada Mohammed, who crossed into Lebanon on Sunday, said her village near the border, Karto, was woken up by a phone call at 4 a.m. from relatives telling her the militants had arrived in the village and she should pack her things.
“We saw seven people they slaughtered,” she said.
Her daughter, Sally Rajab Abboud, described bearded foreigners with long hair who spoke formal Arabic rather than Syrian dialect.
More than 350 families had made the same journey into Lebanon in recent days, according to local Lebanese authorities, fleeing the violence in which the UN human rights office said entire families including women and children had been killed.
Violence began to spread through the coastal region, home to many Alawites, on Thursday, when Syria’s Sunni Islamist-led government said its forces were attacked by remnants of the regime of Syria’s ousted leader Bashar Assad, an Alawite.
Security forces poured into the region to crush the insurrection, while mosques in areas loyal to the government issued calls for jihad, or holy struggle. During violence that followed, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says more than 1,200 civilians were killed, the vast majority of them Alawites.
Syria’s interim President Ahmed Al-Sharaa on Monday promised to punish those responsible, including his own allies if necessary. Sharaa said he could not yet say whether forces from the defense ministry — which has merged former rebels into one structure — were involved in the sectarian killings.
Abou Jaafar Sakkour, who fled to Lebanon from the village of Khirbet Al-Hamam near the Lebanese border, said militants had threatened to slaughter its residents because they are Alawites, whose faith is an offshoot of Shiite Islam.
Some of the militants were Syrian while others were foreign, he said. The attackers had ordered the women to leave the village, and declared that it belonged to them.
“What are we guilty of? We want international protection, whether it’s Israel, Russia, from France. Anything that will protect us,” Sakkour said.
Lebanese from nearby Alawite villages assisted the Syrian refugees as they crossed the river into Lebanon on Tuesday.
Lebanon received more than a million Syrian refugees after the eruption of the Syrian conflict in 2011 as people fled Assad’s rule.
Crossing the river with her two children on Tuesday, a woman said she had fled her home in the city of Tartous after being trapped indoors for three days by heavy gunfire.
“We didn’t go out, we didn’t even stand in front of the windows, we shut the curtains, and we didn’t go out at all, all the doors were locked, but we haven’t slept for three nights,” she said, declining to give her name.
“There’s fear.”

Cops To Crack Down On Use Of Loudspeakers On Mosques: Maharashtra CM
By Faisal Malik
Mar 12, 2025
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is enforcing restrictions on the use of loudspeakers on mosques, even as the Muslim community observes the holy month of Ramadan.
Fadnavis said on Tuesday that the trusts of mosques would be given permission to use loudspeakers for a specified period only. The permission would be renewed only if the decibel level of the azaan or call to prayer delivered over loudspeakers was within the prescribed limits. Those found violating the rules would face action, and repetition of the offence would mean permission to use the loudspeakers would be revoked and the loudspeakers seized.
The chief minister was responding to a demand from BJP legislators Devyani Pharande and Atul Bhatkhalkar in the state assembly, to disallow the use of loudspeakers on mosques on grounds that they contribute to noise pollution.
Pointing to a Supreme Court order, which has banned the use of loudspeakers from 10pm to 6am, and permits a maximum 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night, Fadnavis said the rules were not being observed. “We are now issuing fresh directives, directing the police to issue permission to use loudspeakers for a specified period only. This can be extended if the decibel rules are not violated,” Fadnavis told the state assembly on Tuesday.
“Those violating the rules can face action by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) in the first phase. In the case of repeated offenders, their permission to use loudspeakers will not be renewed by the police,” he stated, adding, “The police will also impose a fine following an order delivered by the Bombay High Court in January 2025.”
The high court in its order on January 23 outlined three steps to follow while acting on a complaint against loudspeakers on religious structures. First, caution the alleged offender. Second, if a complaint is received against the same offender, a fine under Section 136 of the Maharashtra Police Act should be imposed on the religious structure, which may be recovered from the trustees or manager.
Third, if any further complaint is received pertaining to the same religious structure, the police shall adopt steps as contemplated under Section 70 of the Maharashtra Police Act and seize the loudspeakers or amplifiers from the religious structure. They may also proceed to cancel the licence permitting the structure to use loudspeakers or amplifiers.
Fadnavis also said, henceforth, local police inspectors would be responsible for enforcing the rules. “They will visit mosques and check if the decibel rules are being followed. If not, then they are expected to take action. If no action is taken, the police inspectors will be held responsible,” he emphasised.
Fadnavis also wants more power for the police. He said the Environment Protection Act, 1986, vests all power with the MPCB to act against cases of noise pollution. “The police are toothless to deal with such cases. We will request the central government to amend the act to provide powers to the police,” said the chief minister.

Allahabad HC to ASI: Undertake whitewashing of Sambhal’s Jama Masjid within one week
12.03.25
The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday directed the ASI to undertake and complete whitewashing of the Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district within one week.
After hearing counsels for the parties, Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal also directed the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) to install lights on the outer portion of the mosque.
Earlier on Monday, the Allahabad High Court had directed the counsel appearing for the ASI to come up with specific averments as to what prejudice would whitewashing the outer walls of the mosque cause.
SFA Naqvi, counsel for the masjid committee, had submitted that "ASI till date, has not disclosed in its affidavit that it is denying the whitewashing, extra lighting and installation of decorative lights outside the disputed structure." He had also placed reliance upon the coloured photographs of the exterior portion of the disputed site showing the need of whitewashing.

Muslim cleric slams demand for separate facilities for Muslims in Ballia hospital
March 11, 2025
Maulana Shahabuddin Rajvi Barelvi, president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, reacted sharply to a statement of BJP MLA Ketki Singh that Ballia Medical College should have separate facilities for Muslim patients.
The maulana said here on Tuesday that the statement of the MLA from Bansdih in Ballia is grossly reprehensible. “In this country, it has become a habit with people to make hate-filled statements. The BJP MLA’s statement is based on impatience and ignorance,” he said.
Ketki Singh had suggested separate wards for Muslims in Ballia Medical College to ensure safety of Hindus. The maulana said if a hospital could be divided into Hindu and Muslim sections, there should be separate sections based on religion in primary schools, colleges, and universities.
He further said, “There are Muslim and Christian countries which make no such discrimination among their citizens. There is no such discrimination even in our India.”
“It is evident from the MLA’s words that the hearts and minds of some are filled with hatred against Muslims. As legislators they are supposed to talk of brotherhood and social harmony rather than instigating sectarian conflicts,” the cleric said.

Speaking to reporters on Monday (March 10, 2025), Mufti Hameed said, "Muslims should adopt a flexible approach. While going for Friday prayers, they should avoid passing through areas where colours are being sprinkled."
He also urged the imams of mosques in mixed localities to delay the prescribed timing of the Friday prayers by an hour to avoid any possible clash. He emphasised that with minor adjustments, the Muslim community could contribute to the peaceful celebration of Holi.

2023 train firing incident: Court seeks medical papers of dismissed RPF cop undergoing treatment in mental hospital
March 11, 2025
A sessions court on Tuesday directed the Thane Central Jail superintendent to produce medical papers of dismissed Railway Police Force (RPF) constable Chetansinh Choudhary, facing trial for the murder of his senior colleague and three passengers on a train in 2023.
While the prosecution was examining the fifth witness in the case, Narendra Parmar, an RPF colleague of Choudhary, who was on the train on July 31, 2023, when the alleged incident took place, the defence sought an adjournment stating that Choudhary is undergoing treatment at the Thane mental hospital from February 20 and recording of evidence should not be conducted in his absence. The prosecution submitted that in the interest of justice, the plea should be allowed.
The court allowed the plea for adjournment directing the superintendent to produce medical papers. The case has been adjourned to March 29.
Choudhary was arrested on July 31, 2023, for gunning down his senior colleague, assistant sub-inspector Tikaram Meena, and three Muslim passengers on the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express.
In January this year, the court directed him to be shifted to Thane mental health hospital for treatment after a report submitted by a hospital in Akola said that he was showing symptoms of mental disorder.
The fifth witness, Parmar, who was examined on Tuesday told the court that he was informed that Choudhary had shot their senior Meena, while he was on duty in another compartment of the train. He also deposed that he had seen several passengers afraid and Choudhary being “aggressive”.
He also said that he saw him taking a bearded passenger at gun point. He said he thought that he could restrain him but Choudhary was walking among the passengers hence he could not fire. Parmar was also dismissed from service a few months after the incident for “failure to discharge his duty” along with another constable who was on the train.

BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari’s ‘will throw Muslim MLAs out’ remark sparks row; TMC calls it ‘dangerous, provocative’
Mar 12, 2025
KOLKATA: State leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari sparked outrage on Tuesday by declaring BJP would "physically throw Muslim MLAs out of the assembly" after the party "forms the next govt" in Bengal that goes to polls in 2026.
Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh protested the remark, terming it "hate speech". He said it was a criminal offence for constitutional post holders to make such remarks.
He also questioned Adhikari's "mental stability" after the defection of BJP's Haldia MLA Tapasi Mondal to Trinamool the previous day.
Adhikari, who was suspended from the assembly on Feb 17 till the end of budget session, labelled the Mamata govt "a communal administration that is behaving like the second version of Muslim League". "The people of Bengal will uproot them this time," he told reporters outside the assembly.
‘Adhikari’s comment is dangerous, provocative’
Bengal BJP netas refused to comment on Adhikari’s statements. Speaking to reporters, Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: “This is an extremely objectionable statement. The Bengal opposition leader can’t discriminate in the name of religion. He cannot say MLAs from a particular religion will be thrown out physically. This cannot happen... this cannot be said... This mentality is not good.”
Ghosh added: “In Parliament or state assemblies, there can be debate and arguments. But to rake up religion and target MLAs belonging to a specific community is contrary to the Indian Constitution... Pushed to the wall, the leader of opposition is making such statements due to his mental instability. This is dangerous, provocative and depraved. It is also a criminal offence.”
This is not the first time that Adhikari’s statements on religion have caused unease in his own party ranks.
After BJP’s poor show in Bengal in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Adhikari had called for an end to the ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ slogan, saying: “Stop this ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’. I will say ‘Jo hamare saath, hum unke saath’. We don’t need Minority Morcha.”
Bengal BJP netas had publicly disapproved of this comment.

‘Muslims In State Over 40% Now’: AIMIM Says Will Contest West Bengal All Seats
March 12, 2025
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) said on Tuesday it would contest the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections from all the seats “with full force”, claiming that Muslim population in the state at present was well over 40 per cent.
At a press conference in Kolkata, AIMIM spokesperson Imran Solanki said, “We are here to make a big announcement. We fought in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi. In Bengal, we will fight from all seats. In the last panchayat elections, the AIMIM received 60,000 votes in Malda, 25,000 in Murshidabad, and from 15,000 to 18,000 in other areas.”
The party outlined its political agenda, focusing on the issues concerning Muslims, Dalits, and tribals in the state during the press conference which a party leader said was held on the instructions of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi. The party also discussed its expansion strategy and further plans for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Responding to allegations of exploitation of Muslim votes in the state, Solanki underlined that the entire stretch from the High Court to Fort William is Waqf property, which the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government benefits from. “The Trinamool takes advantage of Waqf properties. If the government wants Muslim votes, they should share the accounts of the Waqf Board with us,” Solanki said.
Hitting out at both the TMC and the BJP for the state of affairs in Bengal, he said, “They are two sides of the same coin as they come to power using Muslim votes. But do nothing for us. There is no university in Murshidabad (a district with a sizeable Muslim population). Look at the increasing number of RSS offices opening right under the nose of the TMC government. BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari is Mamata Banerjee’s product only. Just see how no case is registered against him despite his use of foul language, even as our people are framed in one case after another.”
Pointing out that the last Census was conducted in 2011, Solanki said the new census would reveal that the Muslim population in Bengal has now exceeded 40 per cent. “They come to power using Muslim votes, but they don’t do anything for us. We believe that it is because of the 90% Muslim vote that the TMC is able to form the government here,” he added.
Claiming that the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC is trying to fool the people of Bengal, Solanki said, “They start supporting minorities during the elections, but forget about them once the exercise is over.”
In an attempt to expand its party base, the AIMIM has launched a membership drive on the lines of the BJP’s. Supporters are being appealed to to join the party by giving a missed call on a dedicated number.

Union Govt Bans Mirwaiz Farooq's Awami Action Committee, J&K Ittihadul Muslimeen For Five Years
11.03.25
The Centre on Tuesday banned the Awami Action Committee, headed by Kashmir's influential cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and Shia leader Masroor Abbas Ansari-led Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen for five years due to their alleged anti-national activities, supporting terrorism and fuelling secessionist activities.
With this, barring the People's Conference led by Bilal Lone, all other constituents of moderate Hurriyat Conference have been banned by the government under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The two organisations -- Awami Action Committee (AAC) and Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) -- have been banned for a period of five years and the same could be contested after a Tribunal is constituted by the government.
In a post on X, Union Home Minister Amit Shah wrote about the banning of these two organisations saying they were found inciting people to cause law and order situations, posing a threat to the unity and integrity of Bharat.
"Anyone found involved in activities against the nation's peace, order, and sovereignty is bound to face the crushing blow of the Modi govt," he said.
The AAC led by the Mirwaiz condemned the government's action and said "this move seems part of the continuation of the policy of intimidation and disempowerment that has been followed viz a viz J&K since August 2019. The voice of truth may be suppressed through force but will not be silenced".
In a post on X, the Mirwaiz said the AAC has unwaveringly stood by the people of Jammu and Kashmir advocating their aspirations and rights through completely non-violent and democratic methods and calling for peaceful resolution of the Kashmir conflict through dialogue and deliberation.
The Mirwaiz is the chairman of the Hurriyat Conference and head cleric of Srinagar's Jamia Masjid, Kashmir's grandest and most influential mosque, where he delivers sermons.
The Centre's move drew sharp reactions from the ruling National Conference and the PDP who condemned the action.
Former chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti termed the banning of AAC and JKIM as "another blow to Kashmir's social and political landscape".
"Suppressing dissent will only deepen tensions rather than resolve them. The J&K government must intervene to stop such actions. Democracy is about more than elections - it's about protecting citizens' fundamental rights.
"While silencing Kashmir's voices may serve BJP's political agenda, it undermines the very Constitution that safeguards these rights. The central government must reassess its approach and move away from heavy-handed tactics," she said on X.
National Conference general secretary and MLA Ali M Sagar said he was "disappointed" to know about the banning of AAC and JKIM.
"The Mirwaiz family has been torch bearers of peace, communal harmony and helped J&K to keep up with its secular credentials. Such measures do not bring any good to the situation in J&K," he said in his post on X.
Sagar said the Centre must follow the path of reconciliation rather than alienation and added "the Mirwaiz has always been a keen facilitator for peace, he and others like him must be made stakeholders of peace rather than victims of an Iron fist policy".
In two notifications, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the AAC and JKIM are indulging in unlawful activities that are prejudicial to the integrity, sovereignty and security of the country.
The home ministry said the leaders and members of AAC and JKIM have been involved in mobilising funds for perpetrating unlawful activities, including supporting secessionist, separatist and terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
It said their members by their activities show sheer disrespect towards the constitutional authority and constitutional setup of the country and the outfits are involved in promoting and aiding the secession of Jammu and Kashmir from India by involving in anti-national and subversive activities, sowing seeds of disaffection amongst people.
The AAC and JKIM are exhorting people to destabilise law and order, encouraging the use of arms to separate Jammu and Kashmir from the Union of India and promoting hatred against the established government, the ministry said.
The notification cited several cases and chargesheets filed by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the National Investigation Agency against the members of the AAC for their alleged involvement in unlawful activities.
The cases registered against AAC leaders like the Mirwaiz, Mushtaq-ul-Islam, Nisar Ahmad Rather and Nisar Ahmad Bhat include shouting slogans against the integrity of India and for delivering a speech stating that they would struggle till Jammu and Kashmir is not separated from Union of India, and for also pelting stones.
Another case against the Mirwaiz was for supporting the 'Hartal' call given by Syed Ali Shah Geelani for August 3, 2011 and for instigating the general people and the youth of the valley for waging war against the sovereignty of India.
The AAC and JKIM will continue propagating false narrative and anti-national sentiments among the people of Jammu and Kashmir with the intention to cause disaffection against India and disrupt public order and escalate secessionist movements, support militancy and incite violence in the country, the MHA said.
Reacting to the ban, JKIM leader Masroor Abbas Ansari asked the government to review its decision saying "coercion and restrictions do not solve problems but create further complications".
He said religious sentiments of millions of people are associated with JKIM and this organisation has always been a pioneer in social services and its connection with the people is strong and invincible, "so this voice cannot be silenced".
Masroor said banning will neither make any difference nor can it solve the problems and advised the government to "adopt a positive approach" instead of suppressing the people and their demands so that an atmosphere of peace and order can be established in the region".

Jaffar Express attackers moved some hostages to mountainous area, says Talal
By Web Desk
March 11, 2025
Strongly condemning the attack on a Peshawar-bound passenger train from Quetta near Bolan district in Balochistan, Minister of State for Interior and Narcotics Control Talal Chaudhry on Tuesday said that the attackers moved some passengers to the nearby mountainous area.
"They [terrorists] are using women and children as human shields...and security forces were practising caution because of the lives involved," Talal said while speaking on Geo News programme 'Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath'.
The railways official said that as many as 57 recovered passengers from the Jaffar Express were transported to Quetta early Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, 23 other passengers remained in Machh, the officials stated.
Earlier in the day, terrorists attacked Jaffar Express in Balochistan's Bolan district had taken passengers, including women and children.
The train, with over 400 passengers on board in nine bogies, was on its way from Quetta to Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa when it came under attack, according to security sources.
Giving details of the attack, he said that the train was taken hostage around noon in a remote area. "Some passengers were freed as security forces began reaching the site," he said, adding that he could not yet disclose the numbers.
The state minister added that the freed passengers were being taken to the nearest station and eventually their intended destinations. He also confirmed that the hostages included government officials and their families.
The minister noted that women and children were not released by the attackers but recovered through the efforts of the security forces.
Calling the attackers "cowards", Talal said they pick soft targets and attack while hiding.
"Unfortunately, such incidents are being supported by our own people along with the enemy on social media," he said, without mentioning any group or name.
The state minister called upon the international community to stand by Pakistan in the war against terrorism. "Evidence is present that these terrorists gain support from Afghanistan," he said, adding that they are being funded by Afghanistan's drug money.
Amid the ongoing clearance operation, security forces successfully eliminated at least 13 attackers and rescued 80 hostages.
Among those rescued are 53 men, 26 women and 11 children. Security sources added forces are continuing the operation to rescue the other hostages, and the circle around the terrorists is being tightened.
Following the security forces' operation, the militants split into small groups, security sources said, adding that 17 injured passengers were shifted to a nearby hospital for immediate medical treatment.
Soon after the attack started, security forces cordoned off and surrounded the train, and a heavy exchange of fire was reported.
Security sources said that the terrorists behind the attack are in contact with their mastermind in Afghanistan and are using women and children as human shields.
The operation is being carried out with extreme caution due to the presence of civilians onboard. Security sources elaborated that the operation is further complicated by the difficult terrain of the area.
The attackers bombed the railway track before storming aboard the train, said security forces, adding that they also opened fire on the locomotive, injuring the driver.

Aleema, PTI lawyers engage in verbal spat over 'unnecessary' meetings with Khan
By Shabbir Dar
March 11, 2025
Incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan on Tuesday exchanged hot words with the PTI lawyers outside Central Jail Rawalpindi — also known as Adiala jail.
The heated exchange took place when Aleema, after visiting her incarcerated brother, met with the PTI lawyers at the prison’s entrance.
Khan’s sister directed the lawyers that only those advocates would meet the jailed PTI founder who were given responsibility by the former ruling party.
Following the incident, PTI lawyer Naeem Haider Panjutha complained to PTI founder about Aleema’s behavior. Khan has taken notice of Aleema’s attitude, the sources added.
“Khan expressed displeasure over the incident and assured the lawyers that he will instruct Aleema to refrain from indulging in arguments with the lawyers,” the sources added.

Govt hikes tariff for captive plants on IMF prodding
Khaleeq Kiani
March 12, 2025
• ‘Grid levy’ to witness multiple hikes till Aug 2026 amid bid to discourage use of natural gas
• Insiders say Fund unhappy with Discos’ privatisation timeline; agri tax also on its agenda
ISLAMABAD: In a major retreat, the government had to immediately notify an increase in gas rates for industrial captive power plants (CPPs) by about 23pc and scale down temptation for a substantial cut in power rates to get the policy negotiations going with a visiting staff mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for disbursement about $1.1bn in a couple of weeks.
A top official engaged in the ongoing talks told Dawn that the fund mission led by Nathan Porter had taken a tough stance on ‘grid levy’ on the supply of natural gas or liquefied natural gas, or both, to industrial CPPs despite commitments. Therefore, the government completed all formalities in a speedy manner to impose Rs791 per million British thermal unit (mmBtu) grid levy with effect from March 7, 2025, and provided its copies to the fund staff.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Off Grid (Captive Power Plants) Levy Ordinance, 2025 (I of 2025), the federal government is pleased to notify that the rate for the purpose of sub-section (1) of the said section 3 shall be 791 rupees per million British thermal units,” said a notification issued by Petroleum Secretary Momin Agha. This would now take the total price to Rs4,291/- per mmBtu as the government had increased gas rates for the said category by Rs500.
But this will not stop here. Under the said ordinance, the government will increase the grid levy by 10pc in July 2025, followed by 15pc in February 2026 and another 20pc by August 2026, taking the end-price close to Rs6,000 to make gas supply punitive for the industry to shift to national power grid.
Officials said the fund did not buy suggestions about Rs8-10 per unit reduction in power rates through the elimination or cut in sales tax rates, as this had a huge financial impact on the budget and declared it unviable until reforms expand the tax net. However, a Rs2-2.5 per unit cut in the base rate, including associated lower tax may be available to consumers because of a combination of additional revenue from the grid levy, revisions or terminations of power purchase agreements with IPPs, lower interest payments, and a stable exchange rate. This may be in place by next month and July.
The sources said the authorities tried their best to evade imposition of the grid levy on industrial plants despite an agreement signed with the fund last year as part of the $7bn Extended Fund Facility (EFF). For many months, the government ministers and senior officials have also been indicating Rs8-10 per unit cut in electricity prices and the continuation of a cheaper winter package for industries in the future.
Meanwhile, a brief official statement said Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar will review the IMF’s Resilience & Sustainability Facility (RSF) and “reiterated the government’s commitment to climate adaptation and mitigation, as well as stressed sustained efforts to secure this facility”.
Pakistan has already made a formal request for more than $1.2bn RSF — a cheaper and longer facility offered to climate-vulnerable countries. A technical fund mission had recently completed discussions with authorities.
The sources said the fund staff was not comfortable with privatisation timelines for power companies and expressed dissatisfaction over their losses. The government intends to divest Islamabad, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala-based Discos in the first phase to be followed by Multan, Lahore, and Hyderabad Discos.
The government had promulgated the Off Grid Levy Ordinance with effect from Jan 30, as required by the IMF, but did not notify the levy rate. The delay resulted in an increased rate to account for the lapse, official sources said. Under the ordinance, the collection from the levy will be used to reduce the power tariff for other consumers. This levy is applicable over and above the notified rates of natural gas or RLNG. The authorities are required by the law to “calculate levy rate taking into account the difference of power tariff of industrial B3 category notified by Nepra and the self-power generation cost of CPPs at the gas tariff notified by Ogra”.
If the amount of levy is not paid within time by the CPP, it would be recoverable under sub-section (2) and in case of persistent default, the agent shall terminate the gas supplies to the defaulted captive power plant.
The source said the mission was more interested now in the way forward on the collection of agricultural income tax with effect from July 1, 2025, and was engaging with provinces individually and jointly for clarity, besides the retail and real estate sectors.
Officials claim Pakistan had generally met most of the targets for end-December 2024 period, albeit some of them will be delayed, but given the timing of the first biannual review, forward-looking discussions were also taking a sizable part of policy talks for the next year’s budget due in the first week of June. The budget proposals would pass through the IMF’s scrutiny before finalisation, not only during ongoing talks but also subsequent virtual interactions.
The policy-level talks also cover governance reforms, including the creation of a new portal for the uploading of tax returns and asset declarations of the government officers. A wrap-up meeting with finance minister Muhammad Aurangzeb is expected on Friday.

PM Shehbaz orders urgent clearance as KKH still blocked
Jamil Nagri
March 12, 2025
GILGIT: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to expedite the clearance of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) after a massive rockfall at Lotar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Upper Kohistan district left thousands of passengers stranded on both sides of the road.
According to the GBDMA, continuous rainfall since Monday triggered heavy rockslides at 4am on Tuesday, completely blocking a 100-metre stretch of the KKH at Lotar, near Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The KKH is the only route connecting Gilgit-Baltistan with the rest of Pakistan during winter, making its closure a severe disruption for residents, traders and travellers.
Among those stranded were patients en route for medical treatment, women and children, and truckers carrying essential supplies to GB.
Lotar is a remote and high-risk landslide-prone area, with no communication, food or shelter facilities, making it particularly challenging for stranded passengers.
“Waiting in a remote area without communication, shelter or food — especially during Ramazan — is extremely difficult. The clearance work appears slow and could take days,” he said.
Kohistani residents and district authorities have stepped in to provide Iftar meals to stranded passengers, as this marks the fifth time in 10 days that KKH has been blocked due to landslides.
A spokesperson for the National Highway Authority (NHA) confirmed that the NHA and Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) teams are working with heavy machinery to clear the debris. Experts, engineers and manpower are present at the site.

PPP, PML-N joint meeting expresses concern at deteriorating security situation in KP
Syed Irfan Raza
March 12, 2025
ISLAMABAD: A day after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hosted a dinner in honour of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, leaders of PPP and PML-N met on Tuesday to shun their differences.
The meeting was arranged by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi at his residence.
The PPP had already conveyed its reservations to the prime minister that despite being the main ally of the government, the PPP was not being taken on board on important decision-making matters, rather it was being cornered in Punjab by the PML-N-led provincial government and on a unilateral decision of the centre to carve out canals from the River Indus, that could cut Sindh’s share of water from the Indus.
A press release issued by the PPP said the meeting held on making a joint strategy to ensure peace and overall development in the province.
The meeting focused on the overall situation in the province, addressing key concerns such as law and order, economic challenges and political instability.
Leaders of PML-N Rana Sanaullah, Amir Muqam, Sardar Muhammad Yousaf, Khawaja Saad Rafique and Murtaza Javed Abbasi attended the meeting. From the PPP side, provincial president Muhammad Ali Shah Bacha, provincial general secretary Shuja Khanzada and parliamentary leader Ahmad Karim Kundi took part in the meeting.
The meeting was convened on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.
Leaders of the two parties expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in KP, emphasising the urgent need for measures to restore peace and stability.
The leaders also agreed to engage like-minded political parties in consultations to strengthen collaborative efforts for the province’s progress.
The meeting underscored the importance of continued dialogue and consultation between the two major political parties to address the province’s issues effectively.
The leaders paid tribute to law-enforcement agencies for their sacrifices in combating terrorism and maintaining security.
The meeting criticised the KP government’s lack of response to the escalating security concerns, describing it as a matter of grave concern. The two parties vowed to keep a close watch on the situation and work together for the province’s betterment through collective efforts.

Pakistan to take all necessary measures against terrorist outfits based in Afghanistan: Akram
March 11, 2025
Pakistan has reiterated that it will continue to take “all necessary measures” to protect the country from terrorist outfits in Afghanistan, calling out Kabul for “failing” to address the threat posed to the region.
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been strained due to frequent border skirmishes and Islamabad repeatedly demanding that Kabul take action against the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for using Afghan soil to launch attacks in Pakistan. Kabul denies the allegations.
Speaking during the UN Security Council (UNSC) briefing on Afghanistan in New York yesterday, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Munir Akram stated: “Pakistan will continue to take all necessary measures to eliminate the terrorist threats to our national security in accordance with our right to self-defence under international law and in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council.”
He asserted that the Kabul authorities had “failed to address the threat posed to the region and beyond by other terrorist groups, such as Al-Qaeda, the TTP and Baloch terrorists, including the BLA (so-called Balochistan Liberation Army) and the Majeed Brigade, which are present in Afghanistan”.
“The TTP, with 6,000 fighters, is the largest designated terrorist organisation operating from Afghanistan,” the ambassador highlighted.
The banned outfit was “perceived as enjoying Kabul’s patronage” and was fast emerging as an umbrella organisation for regional terrorist groups, the envoy reiterated his warning from last year.
He said that Pakistan had the evidence against Kabul authorities that they “not only tolerated but are complicit in the conduct of TTP’s terrorist cross-border attacks”.
Akram further stated that the TTP was collaborating with other terrorist groups present in Afghanistan, like the BLA and the Majeed Brigade, adding that the latter sought to destabilise Pakistan’s ties with China.
“The TTP also receives external support and financing from our principal adversary,” the envoy said in an apparent reference to India.
Akram continued: “Pakistan has faced the adverse impacts of the series of crises Afghanistan has lived through, during the past 40 years — hosting millions of Afghan refugees, infected by its extremist groups and the inflow of arms and drugs.”
“In the 20-year conflict, which ended in 2021, Pakistan consistently advocated engagement and sought to broker an inclusive peace,” he said, referring to the United States’ withdrawal from Afghanistan.
During his address, the ambassador also spoke on the restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan, stating that the restrictions were also against Islam. “The human rights situation in Afghanistan is another self-inflicted injury,” he said.
According to the 35th report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team submitted to the UNSC last month, Afghan Taliban’s continued support for TTP was fuelling the group’s escalating attacks in Pakistan.
The “scale of outfit’s attacks in Pakistan has increased significantly” and the “status and strength of TTP in Afghanistan had not changed”, the UN report noted.
It further confirmed that the Afghan Taliban continued to provide the outlawed TTP with “logistical and operational space and financial support, bolstering the group’s capacity to sustain its activities”.
In January this year, Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir had said the only point of contention between Pakistan and Afghanistan was the presence of the TTP and cross-border attacks.
The month before that, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while reiterating his call for improved relations with Afghanistan, had also emphasised that the administration in Kabul must rein in the TTP first.
In November 2022, the TTP broke a fragile ceasefire agreement with the Pakistani government, vowing to escalate attacks across the country and target police, security forces, and other law enforcement agencies (LEAs).
Amid escalating attacks, Pakistan has intensified military operations under “Azm-i-Istehkam”, targeting TTP hideouts across the Afghan border, particularly in Paktika and Khost. These military measures include cross-border raids and retaliatory strikes.

Matter of diplomat’s deportation from US under investigation: FO
Abdullah Momand
March 11, 2025
In response to media speculations regarding the deportation of a Pakistani diplomat from the United States, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday said that the matter was “under investigation”.
Local media reported a day ago that “Ambassador K K Wagan was deported from the US” due to an immigration objection.
In a statement issued by the Foreign Office today, the ministry said that the diplomat was travelling to the US for a private visit.
“The matter is being investigated by the foreign ministry,” it said.
Pakistan reached out to the state department for clarity after reports of possible travel curbs being imposed on entry to the US.
Last week, a Reuters report had suggested that Pakistan may also be included on a list of countries whose citizens would be barred from entering the US, as part of the Trump administration’s tightening noose on illegal immigration.
Subsequent reporting in the New York Times suggested that Pakistanis may not face an outright ban on travel, but may undergo “more scrutiny” when applying for a visa.
“We are in contact with the State Department, but nothing has been shared yet,” Pakistan’s US Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Shaikh told Dawn last week.

Umahi, works minister, preaches religious tolerance, breaks fast with Muslims
Nkechinyere Oginiyi
March 11, 2025
David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has requested all Nigerians to shun tribalism and religious bigotry, and be united to uplift Nigeria, saying Nigeria as a Country, was designed by Almighty God to be great but needs unity of purpose among Nigerians, peace and collaborative efforts of all and sundry for her development.
Umahi, who stated this in his residence in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Capital while breaking Ramadan Muslim fast with Hausa and Yoruba Communities in the State, also said that the opposition parties are dead in Ebonyi State owing to the good leadership of Governor Francis Nwifuru, the State governor.
Umahi noted that Governor Nwifuru is doing his best to develop the State, urging the people to pray for the governor, just as he asked Muslims in the Country to pray for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
“In your prayers, please pray for the President, for his success, for all the great work he is doing because he came in the name of God and God has shown himself so mighty strong for our President.
“We pray that God will guide him in good health and everything good thing he thinks for this nation will come to pass, he will achieve it and of course, as we prepare to complete our first tenure that he will also be re-elected for second tenure so that he will complete the good job that he has started.
“Things are turning around; God is showing himself so strong in our administration, and the worst is over. God is helping us mightly and marvellously”, he said.
Umahi, a former Governor of Ebonyi State, also urged the Muslim community to pray for Governor Francis Nwifuru, whom he said, had brought everybody together through all-inclusive administration.
“The Governor of Ebonyi State has brought peace, no more opposition in Ebonyi State. Only APC is in Ebonyi State, he has brought everybody to be on board.
“The Governor is doing all his best to develop the state. You will pray for him for God will guide him and that he will complete his four years tenure and give him victory for the second year tenure and that God will lift Ebonyi State and make us number one in the whole country, for peace, for prosperity, for wealth, for good governance, that God will make us number one”, the Minister concluded.

Uganda deploys forces to South Sudan as civil war fears grow
11 March 2025
Uganda has deployed an unknown number of troops to South Sudan in a bid to protect the fragile government of President Salva Kiir as a tense rivalry with his deputy threatens a return to civil war in the east African nation.
Ugandan special forces have been deployed to Juba, the South Sudanese capital, “to support the government of South Sudan" against a possible rebel advance on the city, said Maj. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, a spokesperson for the Ugandan military.
“We sent a force there two days ago,” he said. “We are not there for peacekeeping."
In deploying Ugandan soldiers to Juba, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni moved as a guarantor of the peace process that keeps Kiir and Machar together in a delicate government of national unity, Kulayigye told The Associated Press Tuesday.
Kiir and Museveni are allies, and Museveni has in the past intervened in the South Sudan conflict to keep Kiir in power.
The deployment of Ugandan troops to South Sudan underscores rising tensions in the oil-producing country that has been plagued by political instability and violence since it gained independence from Sudan in 2011.
The U.S. on Sunday ordered nonemergency government personnel to leave Juba. The U.N. is warning of “an alarming regression that could erase years of hard-won progress” in South Sudan.
The latest tensions stem from fighting in the country's north between government troops and a rebel militia, known as the White Army, that's widely believed to be allied with Machar.
Last week a South Sudanese general was among several people killed when a United Nations helicopter on a mission to evacuate government troops from the town of Nasir, the scene of the fighting in Upper Nile state, was shot at. Earlier in the week, after the White Army overran the military garrison in Nasir, government troops surrounded Machar's home in Juba and several of his allies were arrested. Deputy army chief Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam, who is seen as loyal to Machar, was among those detained.
Kiir had angered Machar’s group earlier in the year by firing officials seen as loyal to Machar, who has charged that “persistent violations through unilateral decisions and decrees threaten the very existence” of their peace pact.
Kiir urged calm after last week's helicopter incident, saying in a statement that his government "will handle this crisis and we will remain steadfast in the path of peace.”
Civil war erupted in South Sudan in late 2013 when a rift between Kiir and Machar escalated into fighting along ethnic lines. Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, accused a group of soldiers loyal to Machar, an ethnic Nuer, of trying to take power by force.
Machar escaped Juba, and later rebels loyal to him came close to capturing Juba but were repulsed by a combined force of South Sudanese soldiers loyal to Kiir and Ugandan special forces.
More than 400,000 people were killed in the 5-year civil war that followed.
With the support of regional leaders and the international community, Kiir and Machar signed a peace deal in 2018 and Machar returned to Juba as South Sudan's first vice president.
But the political rivalry between South Sudan's top two leaders — with Kiir suspicious of his deputy’s ambitions and Machar calling Kiir a dictator — remains an obstacle to lasting peace. Both men have been accused of violating multiple ceasefires.
Kiir and Machar are under pressure from the U.S. and others to more quickly implement the 2018 peace deal and prepare for elections.
Challenges include the government’s failure to implement promised reforms such as completing the unification of the army command.
Presidential elections, repeatedly postponed, are now scheduled for 2026.

UN Must Make Independent Decisions on Afghanistan
2025-03-11
KABUL(BNA): The Deputy Spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate, Mullah Hamdullah Fetrat, has stated that Afghanistan has made efforts to engage with the international community, but certain countries continue to create obstacles.
Fetrat urged the United Nations to make independent decisions regarding Afghanistan, free from the influence of nations that were involved in the country’s past conflicts.
He emphasized that an independent stance from the UN would enable Afghanistan to establish its global position and potentially secure membership in the organization.
His remarks came in response to comments by Roza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, who recently stated that Afghanistan must integrate with the international community. She added that it is the responsibility of the Afghan government to take steps toward global engagement.

FBI: Sharifullah not a top-level planner of Kabul Airport Bombing, remains in custody
ByFidel Rahmati
March 12, 2025
FBI Special Agent Seth Parker testified that Mohammad Sharifullah was not a top level planner of the August 2021 Kabul airport bombing but played a supportive role. Captured by Pakistani forces and handed over to U.S. authorities, Sharifullah faces charges for conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization resulting in death.
President Trump announced Sharifullah’s capture in a joint congressional session, stating he was involved in the Kabul airport attack that killed 13 U.S. service members and over 170 Afghans. Sharifullah’s arrest, facilitated by intelligence sharing with Pakistan, is seen as a significant counterterrorism success.
Sharifullah’s defense argues he was not among the main planners and was not present during the bombing. However, Agent Parker noted Sharifullah’s role in conducting reconnaissance for the attack and his affiliation with ISIS-Khorasan. Sharifullah also admitted to involvement in other terrorist activities, including attacks in Moscow.
In court, Sharifullah claimed ignorance of the bombing details and denied being present during its execution. Despite these claims, evidence points to his active role in planning and facilitating the attack, leading to his detention without bail.
The Kabul airport bombing resulted in at least 182 deaths, including 13 U.S. service members. The attack, claimed by ISIS-K, occurred during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, highlighting the complex security environment during that period.
If this ISIS member is found guilty for his role in the suicide attacks, he is likely to be sentenced to life in prison.
Sharifullah’s capture and forthcoming trial underscore the U.S. commitment to pursuing justice for acts of terrorism. The case also emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in combating terrorism and bringing perpetrators to justice.
The legal proceedings against Mohammad Sharifullah reflect ongoing efforts to address the legacy of violence from the Afghanistan conflict. As the trial progresses, it may offer further insights into the operations of ISIS-K and inform future counterterrorism strategies.

Over 22.9 million people in Afghanistan need urgent aid, says Iran’s UN Ambassador
By Fidel Rahmati
March 11, 2025
Iran’s UN Ambassador, Iravani, has highlighted that over 22.9 million people in Afghanistan urgently require assistance due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Amir Saeed Iravani, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, stated that Afghanistan is facing one of the worst humanitarian crises globally, with over 22.9 million people in need of urgent assistance. He emphasized the severity of the situation and the growing demand for international support.
Iravani further reported that the humanitarian response plan for 2025 requires $2.42 billion in funding, yet the financial contributions have remained alarmingly low. He urged that humanitarian aid should be impartial and unconditional to ensure that it reaches those in need without any obstacles, stressing the importance of continued assistance to Afghanistan.
Despite claims by the Taliban regarding economic growth, Afghanistan’s economy remains fragile and unstable according to reputable international economic institutions. Reports indicate widespread poverty, a vulnerable economy, and an uncertain economic future, with the country facing severe economic challenges over the past three years.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also noted earlier on March that although intense conflict has subsided in the past three years, Afghanistan’s economy continues to be fragile. This underscores the ongoing difficulties faced by the Afghanistan people and the need for sustained international support to stabilize the nation’s economy and provide much-needed relief.
Afghanistan’s crisis remains dire, and international aid must increase to meet the rising humanitarian needs. The international community must ensure that assistance continues to flow without interruption and reach those who are most vulnerable.

Yemen rebels say will resume attacks on Israeli shipping over blocked Gaza aid
March 12, 2025
SANAA: Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis on Tuesday said they would resume attacks on Israeli shipping after their deadline for the resumption of aid deliveries into Gaza expired.
The Houthis said they were “resuming the ban on the passage of all Israeli ships” in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, Baba Al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden after Israel failed to meet the four-day deadline the rebels set on Friday for the suspended aid deliveries to be restarted.
Israel blocked all aid into the war-battered territory just over a week ago in an effort to pressure Hamas into releasing the remaining hostages it took in its October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
An increasingly fragile truce was then further hit on Sunday when Israel announced it would cut off the electricity supply to a water desalination plant in Gaza, although Hamas announced on Tuesday that a fresh round of ceasefire talks had begun in Qatar.
The Houthis, who control much of the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest country, fired scores of drones and missiles at Israeli-linked and other shipping in the Red Sea during the Gaza war, until calling a halt when a ceasefire started in January.
The rebels said on Tuesday that the ban on Israeli shipping would “take effect from the time this statement is issued” and that “any Israeli ship attempting to violate this ban shall be targeted in the declared zone of operations.”
The attacks will continue until Israel allows aid deliveries in Gaza, the Houthis said.

Trump’s hostage envoy visited Iraq to push to free kidnapped Princeton researcher, sources say
March 12, 2025
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs Adam Boehler traveled to Iraq last month to push for the release of Israeli-Russian researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov, who was kidnapped in Iraq nearly two years ago, three sources familiar with the matter said.
Since taking office, Boehler has stepped up efforts to secure the release of Tsurkov, a Princeton University student who went missing in Iraq during a research trip in March 2023, publicly urging the Iraqi government to help her get home.
“The Trump Administration has done more in just a few weeks than the previous administration did in almost two years,” Emma Tsurkov, sister of Elizabeth told Reuters in a statement.
“I am especially grateful to SPEHA (Special Envoy) Boehler for going directly to meet with Prime Minister (Mohammed Shia Al-)Sudani in Baghdad. His engagement with Sudani makes it clear that the US holds Sudani responsible for finding a way to get my sister home.”
An Iraqi official speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters confirmed Boehler had visited in February to discuss the Tsurkov case but did not provide further details.
Tsurkov is being held in Iraq by the Shiite militia Kataib Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran, according to Israeli officials.
Boehler is trying to negotiate a deal under which Tsurkov will be released in exchange for six members of Iran-aligned Lebanese militia Hezbollah, one of the sources, adding that there was a whole of government effort to bring her back.
“The United States cannot tolerate hostage-taking of US nationals or those of our partners such as Israel. We have and will continue to underscore with the Iraqi government the urgency of securing Elizabeth Tsurkov’s release,” a State Department spokesperson at Boehler’s office said.
In a February 5 post on social media platform X, Boehler advocated for Tsurkov’s release.
“Elizabeth Tsurkov is a Princeton student held hostage in Iraq! The @IraqiPMO consistently made false promises to the prior administration about releasing her. BUT NOW @realDonaldTrump IS ON TO YOU,” Boehler said, tagging the official handle of Sudani’s office.
He said if Tsurkov does not come home, then the Iraqi prime minister’s office is “either incapable and should be FiRED or worse COMPLICIT. Bring Elizabeth home now!“
Under the previous administration of former President Joe Biden, Tsurkov’s family struggled to get Washington to throw its weight behind the efforts to secure her release. US officials then said there was little they could do because she is not an American citizen.
“March 21 will be the two year anniversary of my sister’s kidnapping. Hopefully she will not endure March 21 in their custody,” Emma Tsurkov said.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke on the phone on February 25 with Sudani. While a State Department statement on the conversation did not mention a discussion on Tsurkov, one of the sources said Rubio pushed the Iraqi prime minister on her case.

Moroccan handed two-year jail term after posts praising attack in Israel
March 12, 2025
RABAT: A Moroccan Islamist activist has been sentenced to two years in prison for “incitement to hatred” over social media posts praising a stabbing attack in Israel, his lawyer said on Tuesday.
Redouane El Kastit, a member of the banned but tolerated Al Adl Wal Ihssane movement, was sentenced by a court in Tangier late Monday, his lawyer Mohamed Serroukh told AFP.
El Kastit was arrested on February 5 and charged with “incitement to hatred,” “discrimination,” and “insulting a public body” after about 15 posts he made on Facebook, his lawyer said.
According to the prosecution, the posts described a late-January stabbing of five people in Tel Aviv as the start of a “blessed racist campaign.”
El Kastit denied making the posts on social media, the lawyer added.
He was also accused of posting a photo of the attacker and praising his Moroccan identity.
“The court considered this an endorsement of a terrorist act,” Serroukh said.
The lawyer said he will appeal the “harsh ruling.”

Jordan’s king hosts Ramadan iftar in Amman for Palestinian president and guests from Jerusalem
March 12, 2025
LONDON: King Abdullah of Jordan hosted a Ramadan iftar at Al-Husseiniya Palace in Amman on Tuesday, the guests at which included Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and religious and political figures from Jerusalem, including representatives of several faiths and the Islamic Waqf.
Abbas commended the king for Jordan’s support of the rights of Palestinians, including their right to an independent state, and the country’s rejection of plans to displace Palestinian residents of the Gaza Strip.
Mohammed Azzam Al-Khatib, director of the Jerusalem Waqf and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs department, which is responsible for administering the mosque, said Jordanian support has enabled the Waqf to carry out several charitable projects to help Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem.
Jordan is the custodian of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, including Al-Aqsa and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. It administered the Old City of Jerusalem and the West Bank for nearly 20 years before the Israeli occupation began in June 1967.
Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem described Jordan’s guardianship of holy Islamic and Christian sites in the city as “a great political and historical responsibility."
He said the Christian presence in Jerusalem faces growing challenges from extremist Israeli groups that want to seize church property. He also warned of the rise of “Christian Zionism,” which he said distorts the teachings of Christ to use them as a tool for political ends, the Petra news agency reported.
William Hanna Shomali, the auxiliary bishop of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and Mohammed Hussein, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, also thanked King Abdullah for supporting Palestinian causes.
Other guests at the iftar included Ayman Safadi, Jordan’s minister of foreign affairs, Hussein Al-Sheikh, the secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s executive committee, and other senior officials and ministers from Jordan and Palestine.

Israeli settlers stole hundreds of sheep, say West Bank Bedouin
March 12, 2025
RAMALLAH: Armed Israeli settlers stole hundreds of sheep from a Bedouin community in the Jordan Valley, local residents say, in one of the largest recent incidents in which the Bedouin in the area have reported being attacked and harassed.
Such attacks in the area have increased since the Gaza war began but witnesses said the scale of Friday’s incident near Ein Al-Auja, north of the city of Jericho in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, went far beyond anything witnessed previously.
“This was the biggest one there has been,” said Hani Zayed, a resident of the community, who said he lost 70 sheep in the attack. After years of experience in dealing with local law enforcement, the idea of appealing to the police to help elicited nothing more than a shrug.
“The police don’t do anything; they have never helped us in anything. If you tell them the settler is taking your sheep, they’ll ask ‘Are you sure it’s yours?’”
Local residents said about 1,500 sheep and goats were taken by settlers, who drove the animals from the village under the eyes of police and soldiers or loaded them onto pickup trucks.
An Israeli police statement denied the incident had taken place as described. Israel’s military did not comment, nor did a group representing settlers in the area.
The Jordan Valley, a relatively sparsely populated area close to the Jordan River, is now under increasing pressure from settlers, local residents and human rights groups say.
For many Bedouin herders, the loss of a flock means the loss of any way of earning a livelihood.

Thousands of Syria Alawites seek refuge in Russian air base
March 11, 2025
HMEIMIM: Thousands of Alawites sought refuge in Russia’s Hmeimim military air base in western Syria on Tuesday, a war monitor said, after sectarian mass killings swept the region.
“Thousands of Alawite civilians fled the massacres in the city of Jableh and its surrounding villages to seek refuge inside and around the Hmeimim military base,” the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, told AFP.
The war monitor said that 1,225 civilians, the vast majority Alawites, had been killed since violence began on Thursday with clashes between security forces and fighters loyal to ousted president Bashar Assad.
The killings have been concentrated on Syria’s Mediterranean coast, the heartland of the Alawite minority to which Assad belongs.
The Observatory said that some of the displaced, who began arriving at the base on Friday, were refusing to go home for fear of further violence while some had had their homes destroyed.
It said they were suffering from severe shortages of food, medical equipment and other essentials.
Other families were hiding in the mountains, the Observatory said.
The mayor of Jableh, Amjad Sultan, told AFP he had come to the base to convince people it was safe to return home.
“We came today... to inform them that the situation outside is now safe, as security forces have begun deploying and consolidating control,” he said.
“We have transported some of the wounded, they are currently in ambulances. We will also work to evacuate the families, one by one,” he added.
At the entrance to the base, an AFP journalist saw a Syrian Red Crescent convoy evacuating three wounded people, including two women.
Some of the displaced were protesting outside, calling for international protection and chanting “Russia, Russia.”
Russia, which gave Assad military backing during the war, has been trying to establish contact with the new authorities in Damascus in the hope of maintaining control of Hmeimim and its naval base in Tartus.

Why Syrian Druze have put their faith in Damascus instead of Israel for community’s security
EYAD ABU SHAKRA
March 11, 2025
LONDON: Just a day after the surprise agreement between the Syrian Arab Republic’s interim government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which control the country’s northeast, reports have emerged of a similar deal in the offing with Druze representatives in Suweida.
If secured, the agreement would allow Syrian government security forces to enter the Druze stronghold in southern Syria through liaison and cooperation with two military leaders, Laith Al-Bal’ous and Suleiman Abdul-Baqi, as well as local notables.
The agreement includes provisions for Suweida’s population to join the ranks of government security forces, secure government jobs, and for the Druze community to gain full recognition as a constituent part of the Syrian nation. In return, all security centers and facilities throughout the province would be handed over to the interim government’s General Security Authority.
The Druze, who are spread across Syria, Lebanon and Israel, are an esoteric Islamic sect that branched out of Ismaili Shiism.
President Ahmed Al-Sharaa’s interim government is under pressure to reunite a nation fragmented since the onset of civil war in 2011. This task became even more urgent on Monday when Israel declared its willingness to intervene to defend Syria’s Druze, following days of violence in parts of the country.
The violence erupted last week between fighters linked to Syria’s new government and forces loyal to ousted president Bashar Assad.
Syria’s interim government announced on Monday that it had completed a military operation against a nascent insurgency, with the violence centered in coastal provinces where most of Syria’s Alawite minority resides.
The Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, is the religious group from which the Assad family traces its roots.
Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer described the violence as a “massacre of civilians” and stated that Israel was “prepared, if needed, to defend the Druze,” though he did not provide details on how this would be carried out.
Israel has a small Druze community, and some 24,000 Druze also live in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 war and annexed in 1981.
On March 1, Israel announced that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz had instructed the military to be ready to defend a Druze town in the suburbs of Damascus from Syrian government forces.
Some critics view Israel’s stated concern for the Druze as a smokescreen for establishing further buffer zones within Syria to protect its borders from potential extremist threats.
Syria’s fluid political situation has always had regional repercussions. As one of the most strategically important countries in the Near East, Syria’s internal dynamics inevitably affect its neighbors.
Netanyahu’s recent statement that Tel Aviv was committed “to protecting the Druze community in southern Syria” did not surprise observers who have closely followed Syrian affairs since the 2011 uprising.
Several factors must be considered in order to understand Israel’s interest in the Druze.
During 54 years of Assad family rule, little effort was made to safeguard the freedoms, democracy, and human rights of Syria’s minorities. The sectarian governance and police state they established heavily favored the Alawite minority at the expense of the Sunni majority, which makes up more than 75 percent of Syria’s population.
Given its minority base, the regime relied on the support of other ethnic and religious minorities to contain Sunni frustration. The 1982 Hama Massacre, targeting the Muslim Brotherhood, only intensified animosity, heightened distrust, and deepened Syria’s political and sectarian polarization.
However, Hafez Assad’s strong leadership and tactical savvy, which kept opposition at bay from 1971 until his death in 2000, helped maintain stability.
Hafez Assad worked hard to reassure religious and sectarian minorities that his heavy-handed campaign in Hama was necessary to protect them from militant fundamentalism. His strategic foresight also convinced Iran, his trusted ally since the Iran-Iraq war, that Syria’s future aligned with Tehran’s regional vision, reducing the need for Iranian over-involvement.
This balance began to shift as Hafez Assad’s grip weakened, first with the 1994 death of his eldest son and heir apparent Basel in a road accident, and later as his health deteriorated, leading to his death in 2000.
His second son, Bashar, a medical doctor, was groomed to succeed him, but lacked his father’s political acumen, respect, and influence.
Many of Hafez Assad’s veteran political and military lieutenants were sidelined, as were key policies and alliances, particularly concerning Syria’s control over Lebanon.
More crucially, Bashar never gained the full trust of Iran, which by 2004 had solidified its regional influence through Hezbollah in Lebanon and the post-Saddam Hussein Shiite-dominated Iraq.
Iran became the true power broker in both Lebanon and Iraq, leaving Bashar’s regime a facade of authority. Meanwhile, Israel, closely monitoring these shifts, prepared for the implications of increased Iranian involvement.
Though Israel had long maintained a quiet border with Syria since the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, Iran’s expanding role in Lebanon required careful attention.
While Israel did not fear a direct Iranian military threat, given Tehran’s strategic realism and reluctance to attack America’s key regional ally, Iran’s persistent influence and nuclear ambitions remained a source of concern.
Following the 2005 assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, Hezbollah’s growing power in Lebanon, and its grip on the country’s southern border, further unsettled Israel.
When Syria’s uprising began in 2011, Hezbollah underlined its regional mission by joining Assad’s forces in fighting the opposition, alongside pro-Iran Iraqi, Afghan, and Pakistani Shiite militias.
The Syrian conflict quickly became one of the region’s bloodiest wars, killing hundreds of thousands, displacing millions, and devastating cities and villages.
The war deepened sectarian divisions in Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq, attracting radical elements on all sides.
The Druze community suffered multiple attacks from extremist groups. The first major incident came in December 2014 when pro-regime sources reported that fighters targeted the village of Arnah and smaller neighboring Druze settlements on Mount Hermon’s eastern slopes, killing 37 civilians.
Another attack occurred on June 10, 2015, in Qalb Loze, Idlib province, when an armed group linked to the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat Al-Nusra killed 24 Druze villagers, accusing them of blasphemy and collaboration with Assad’s army.
The deadliest attack came in July 2018 when Daesh massacred at least 221 Druze villagers in eastern Suweida, injuring 200 and taking many hostage.
The final major event before Netanyahu’s intervention followed the fall of the Assad regime.
In Jaramana, a Damascus suburb, friction arose between local Druze defense groups and new Syrian security forces over a dispute and the defense groups’ refusal to surrender their weapons.
This added to the army’s challenges in maintaining control over the Alawite heartlands in Latakia and Tartous and the Kurdish-held northeast.
Israel has historically played “the Druze card” to its advantage during regional crises. Netanyahu seemingly saw an opportunity to portray Israel as the protector of the Druze, mirroring Iran’s role as the “guardian of the Shiites” and certain Western governments’ historical ties to Christendom.
However, rather than turning to Israel for protection, the Druze appear to have responded to the pragmatism of Syria’s new regime, particularly after its agreement with the SDF, which signals its commitment to uphold the rights of the Kurdish minority.
Yet, recent revenge attacks on the Alawite minority highlight two crucial points: first that the new government must demonstrate that it represents all Syrians, and second, that foreign intervention — Israeli or otherwise — could carry significant political costs.
In such a deeply polarized region, outside assistance rarely guarantees security, stability, or peaceful coexistence.

Hamas official says Gaza ceasefire talks have begun in Doha
March 11, 2025
CAIRO: A senior Hamas official said that a fresh round of Gaza ceasefire talks began on Tuesday in the Qatari capital Doha, with the Palestinian movement approaching the negotiations “positively and responsibly.”
“A new round of ceasefire negotiations began today,” Abdul Rahman Shadid said in a statement. “Our movement is dealing with these negotiations positively and responsibly.”
Israel has also sent a team of negotiators for talks aimed at extending the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, but has so far not commented on the talks.
“We hope that the current round of negotiations leads to tangible progress toward beginning the second phase,” Shadid said.
He also expressed hope that US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff would help “initiate negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.”
“The US administration bears responsibility due to its unwavering support for the occupying (Israeli) government.”
The first 42-day phase of the truce deal expired in early March without agreement on subsequent stages meant to secure a lasting end to the war, which erupted after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
There are differing views on how to proceed, with Hamas seeking immediate negotiations for the next phase, while Israel wants to extend the first phase.
Hamas has accused Israel of reneging on the ceasefire deal, stating in a statement on Monday that Israel “refuses to commence the second phase, exposing its intentions of evasion and stalling.”
Ahead of the current round of talks, Israel halted the supply of electricity to Gaza’s only desalination plant, a move Hamas condemned as “cheap and unacceptable blackmail.”
Israel has already stopped aid deliveries to Gaza amid the deadlock over the ceasefire.
“Denying the flow of food, medicines, fuel and basic relief means has led to a spike in food prices and a severe shortage of medical supplies, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” Hamas said in a separate statement.
The initial phase of the truce brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the United States began on January 19, and helped reduce hostilities after more than 15 months of relentless fighting that displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2.4 million residents.
While the fate of the ceasefire remains uncertain, both sides have largely refrained from all-out hostilities.
However, in recent days, Israel has conducted daily strikes targeting militants in Gaza.
On Tuesday, an Israeli airstrike killed four men in Gaza City, according to the territory’s civil defense agency.
The Israeli military said that its air forces had struck “several terrorists engaged in suspicious activity posing a threat to IDF (Israeli) troops.”
During the ceasefire’s first phase, 25 living Israeli hostages and eight bodies were exchanged for around 1,800 Palestinians in Israeli custody.
Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack led to the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, most of them civilians, while Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed at least 48,503 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians, according to data from both sides.
In recent days, US hostages envoy Adam Boehler held unprecedented direct talks with Hamas and said an agreement for releasing more captives was expected “in the coming weeks.”
But US Secretary of State Marco Rubio talked down the prospects of a breakthrough from those discussions.
“That was a one-off situation in which our special envoy for hostages, whose job it is to get people released, had an opportunity to talk directly to someone who has control over these people and was given permission and encouraged to do so,” Rubio told journalists late on Monday in Jeddah.
“It hasn’t borne fruit. But it... doesn’t mean he was wrong to try.”

Erdogan says Syria’s agreement with Kurds will ‘serve peace’
March 11, 2025
ISTANBUL: An agreement to integrate autonomous Kurdish institutions in Syria’s northeast into the new Syrian national government will “serve peace,” Turkiye’s president said on Tuesday.
“The full implementation of the agreement reached yesterday will serve Syria’s security and peace. The winner will be all of our Syrian brothers,” Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a Ramadan fast breaking dinner.
Syria’s new authorities under interim President Ahmed Al-Sharaa have sought to disband armed groups and establish government control over the entirety of the country since ousting long-time leader Bashar Assad in December after more than 13 years of civil war.
On Monday, the Syrian presidency announced an agreement with the head of the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to integrate the autonomous Kurdish administration that has governed much of the northeast for the past decade into the national government.
The new accord is expected to be implemented by the end of the year.
The SDF — seen essential in the fight against Daesh terrorists — is dominated by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara views as an offshoot of the PKK, an outlawed group dominated by ethnic Kurds in Turkiye which has waged a bloody insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984.
Turkiye, which has forged close relations with Sharaa, has pressed Syria’s new rulers to address the issue of the YPG’s control over wide parts of Syria.
On Tuesday, Erdogan said Turkiye attached “great importance to preserving the territorial integrity and unitary structure of our neighbor Syria.”
He added: “We see every effort to cleanse Syria of terrorism as a step in the right direction.”
The agreement comes nearly two weeks after a historic call by jailed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) founder Abdullah Ocalan for the militant group to lay down its weapons and disband.

The Islamic Endowments Department in occupied Quds reported, according to the Palestinian Safa News Agency, that dozens of settlers stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque and organized provocative tours of its courtyards.
The Department explained that the intruders performed Talmudic rituals in the eastern area of the mosque.
Occupying forces intensified their military measures around the Old City and at the gates of Al-Aqsa Mosque, obstructing the entry of worshippers.
Occupied authorities have installed new surveillance cameras at several gates of Al-Aqsa since the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

AI helps manage crowds at Grand Mosque in Makkah
March 11, 2025
RIYADH: The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority has ramped up its support for government agencies providing digital services to Umrah performers during Ramadan, as the Two Holy Mosques experience high volumes of visitors.
These initiatives align with directives from King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed to enhance services for pilgrims.
SDAIA has ensured the technical readiness of all entry points to Saudi Arabia — air, sea, and land borders — by deploying a national team working around the clock with relevant authorities.
This team maintains primary and backup communication systems to guarantee uninterrupted service for Umrah visitors.
A key development in crowd management is the Baseer platform, launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior’s General Security Directorate.
This advanced computer vision system uses AI to monitor and analyze visitor movement within the Grand Mosque, including crowd tracking, detecting counter-directional movement, and assisting in locating missing persons.
SDAIA has also established a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Interior’s Special Forces for Hajj and Umrah Security to develop algorithms that improve services at both the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque.
In a recent initiative with the Civil Aviation Authority and Ministry of Interior, SDAIA has implemented 70 AI-powered electronic gates at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. These gates streamline the entry process for Umrah performers and visitors, ensuring both security and convenience while enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Ukraine agrees to 30-day ceasefire with Russia, US to resume intelligence sharing after Jeddah talks
March 11, 2025
JEDDAH: Talks between the US and Ukraine aimed at ending the war with Russia took place in Jeddah on Tuesday, Saudi Press Agency reported.
The administration of US President Donald Trump agreed to lift its suspension of military aid and intelligence sharing for Ukraine, and Kyiv signaled that it was open to a 30-day ceasefire in the war with Russia, pending Moscow’s agreement, American and Ukrainian officials said following the talks.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US would present the ceasefire offer to the Kremlin.
“We’re going to tell them this is what’s on the table. Ukraine is ready to stop shooting and start talking. And now it’ll be up to them to say yes or no,” Rubio said.
The talks were held at the direction of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and took place in the presence of the Kingdom’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Minister of State and Member of the Council of Ministers Musaed bin Mohammed Al-Aiban.
The US was represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, while Ukraine was represented by the head of the Ukrainian presidential office Andriy Yermak, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.
The talks come within the Kingdom’s efforts to resolve the crisis in Ukraine, thanks to its balanced relations with various parties, and as part of its efforts to enhance global security and peace, SPA said.
They are based on Saudi Arabia’s belief in the importance of adhering to international laws and norms, and that dialogue is the most successful means of resolving disputes and bringing viewpoints closer together, SPA added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky left the Kingdom early on Tuesday morning after meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during a brief visit before the talks started.
After the meeting, Saudi Arabia expressed hope that efforts would succeed in ending the crisis in Ukraine in line with international law and the United Nations Charter, including respect for the principles of sovereignty and internationally recognized borders.
Kyiv expressed appreciation for Riyadh’s efforts in hosting talks between Ukraine and the US, and for humanitarian and development aid provided by the Kingdom.
Today in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – under the gracious hospitality of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman – the United States and Ukraine took important steps toward restoring durable peace for Ukraine.
Representatives of both nations praised the bravery of the Ukrainian people in defense of their nation and agreed that now is the time to begin a process toward lasting peace.
The Ukrainian delegation reiterated the Ukrainian people’s strong gratitude to President Trump, the US Congress, and the people of the United States for making possible meaningful progress toward peace.
Ukraine expressed readiness to accept the US proposal to enact an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire, which can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties, and which is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by the Russian Federation. The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace.
The United States will immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine.
The delegations also discussed the importance of humanitarian relief efforts as part of the peace process, particularly during the above-mentioned ceasefire, including the exchange of prisoners of war, the release of civilian detainees, and the return of forcibly transferred Ukrainian children.
Both delegations agreed to name their negotiating teams and immediately begin negotiations toward an enduring peace that provides for Ukraine’s long-term security. The United States committed to discussing these specific proposals with representatives from Russia. The Ukrainian delegation reiterated that European partners shall be involved in the peace process.
Lastly, both countries’ presidents agreed to conclude as soon as possible a comprehensive agreement for developing Ukraine’s critical mineral resources to expand Ukraine’s economy and guarantee Ukraine’s long-term prosperity and security.

Father takes on Ramadan charity cycle challenge
March 11 2025,
A father of four aims to cycle 280 miles (450km) while fasting during the month of Ramadan to raise money for charity.
Shahid Akhtar, from Rainworth, Nottinghamshire, said he hoped to cycle about nine miles (15km) every day before breaking his fast at sunset.
He said the task had been made more difficult by a foot injury he sustained from running, but he was determined to raise £5,000 for Charity Right - a group that provides meals to schoolchildren in neglected parts of the world, including people in Gaza.
The 52-year-old said: "I find Ramadan to be such a rewarding month, and doing a challenge to help those not as fortunate as myself is challenging but very satisfying."
Ramadan began in England on 1 March after the sighting of the crescent moon, and is due to end on 30 March, followed by Eid al-Fitr, the "festival of breaking the fast".
During the month, Muslims abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours.
'Mental strength'
Mr Akhtar said he was passionate about running and over the past two years had completed charity running challenges whilst fasting during Ramadan, which he described as "pretty challenging".
"My hope was to do the same this year but it wasn't possible because to my foot injury, Plantar Fasciitis," he said.
"I had given up on doing a challenge as I was pretty immobile, but I made a last-minute decision to attempt a cycling challenge."
Mr Akhtar said although he was only an occasional rider and had not trained for the challenge due to his injury, he had made good progress totalling more than 135km since starting on 2 March.
"It's really challenging as I have been fasting all day without food or water," he said.
"Some days I have felt pretty drained, but after breaking the fast the energy levels start to increase, and that first sip of water always tastes fantastic."
He said it was a mental challenge as well as physical to push himself each day, but he was hopeful "my mental strength and general fitness will get me through".
"My motivation is that I am doing something positive that will benefit those in need in Gaza," he said.
"Thankfully my foot has not reacted too badly to cycling.
"I do a recovery session in the evenings by refuelling and rehydrating, and physio and stretches so I can go again the next day.
"I am not a regular cyclist but so far I am enjoying the rides."
Mr Akhtar, who has so far raised more than £1,460 for Charity Right, added he was grateful for the "kind and generous" donations.

Russian military liberates multiple locations in Kursk Region
11 Mar, 2025
The Russian Defense Ministry has announced the liberation of 12 villages across Kursk Region, reporting a rapid advance against Ukraine’s invasion force in the area.
Over the past 24 hours, Russian troops have recaptured more than 100 square kilometers of land, the ministry said in its daily briefing on Tuesday. The liberated locations named by the military include the villages of Agronom, Bogdanovka, Bondarevka, Dmitryukov, Zazulevka, Ivashkovsky, Kolmakov, Kubatkin, Martynovka, Mikhailovka, Pravda, and Yuzhny.
The development suggests that Russian troops are advancing on the town of Sudzha from the north, east, and southeast, while Ukrainian forces are apparently fleeing southwest across the river of the same name. According to media reports, Moscow’s forces have already entered the town, which remains the largest settlement in Kursk Region under Kiev’s control.
Over the past week, things have rapidly deteriorated for the Ukrainian force in Kursk Region, with its northern flank effectively collapsing. It remains unclear whether Kiev’s troops will try to make a stand in Sudzha or retreat altogether.
The invasion force has long been experiencing logistics troubles, as the Russian military has gradually been cutting off its supply routes. Now, the remnants of the Ukrainian force are dependent on a single major cross-border road, which has been coming under constant drone and artillery strikes.
Kiev invaded Kursk Region last August, capturing Sudzha and multiple villages in its vicinity in a matter of days. The Ukrainian zone of control, however, has gradually been shrinking ever since, with the invasion force now having lost more than two-thirds of its initial gains.
The attack on Kursk Region has taken an extreme toll on the Ukrainian military, with the invasion force reporting up to 66,550 casualties during the operation, the latest estimates by the Russian Defense Ministry suggest. Nearly 400 Ukrainian tanks, more than 300 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), 272 armored personnel carriers (APCs), and over 2,000 other armored vehicles were destroyed or captured in the hostilities in the area.

Muslim community members respond to impending travel ban
By Beth Warden
Mar. 12, 2025
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A bill aimed to counter an impending travel ban was reintroduced last week in Congress.
The National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Non-immigrants, or “NO-BAN” Act, is an attempt to prevent travel bans on people of the Islamic faith, or any other religious group.
In 2017, executive orders prohibited travel from predominantly Muslim countries or refugees entering from those countries.
That order is expected to be re-implemented within days.
“A dangerous moment that we’re in and one that you know all Americans need to be wary of and start paying attention to,” said American Arab Antidiscrimination Committee Executive Director Abed Ayoub.
Proponents of a travel ban believe protecting the country by heavily controlling the borders and entry is essential to citizen safety.
Others believe the ban will go too far.
“To make the immigrant communities, particularly our community, suspect and it does put a target on us,” said Ayoub.
International civil rights organization CIVICUS is adding the United States to its watchlist of five countries.
The concern is possible faltering civic freedoms based on recent executive orders.
“And those individuals are likely to be targeted for removal based on their First Amendment-protected activity,” said Immigration Attorney Yasmine Taeb.
South Dakota has over 2,000 international students, spending over $40,000 annually, just a fraction of the international student population nationwide.
“Students are considering leaving for Canada or Australia, which is a great loss to our intellectual communities,” said University of Colorado Professor Azita Ranjbar.
Those obtaining U.S. citizenship from a banned country worry about how to have visits with their family.
“What we’re seeing is a chipping away at our rights and taking away of the rights of folks in this country,” said Ayoub.
With a growing number of those of the Muslim faith in South Dakota, the hope is they will be embraced with acceptance and peace, especially during this holy time of Ramadan.

Lewiston teen identified as victim in mosque shooting
Mar. 12, 2025
LEWISTON — Police released more information Tuesday afternoon on a shooting that occurred Friday at a local mosque on Bartlett Street, including the name of the victim.
Liban Hassan, 19, of Lewiston was identified as the only victim at Masjidu Salaam Mosque at 243 Bartlett St., according to a Lewiston Police Department Facebook post.
Police responded to the mosque around 9:45 p.m. Friday after reports of gunshots flooded dispatch.
When police arrived, they spoke with a person who was able to confirm a shooting took place in the mosque’s parking lot during the congregation’s celebration of Ramadan.
Hassan, who received an injury that was not life-threatening, was dropped off at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center around 10 p.m. He was uncooperative with police, the post said, but “all indications suggest he was shot during the shooting incident …”
Police returned to the scene Saturday morning to search for evidence and discovered more than a dozen shell casings consistent with several caliber weapons. This indicates the incident involved several shooters, the post said.
Hassan’s vehicle was later found abandoned with extensive damage from bullet holes. The vehicle was impounded by police and searched after a warrant was granted.
“Hassan has been released from the hospital, and he continues to be uncooperative with police,” the post said.
In the Facebook post, Lewiston police said “there not a lot of cooperation from the numerous Mosque members who were attending prayer.”
Rilwan Osman, director of Maine Immigrant and Refugee Services, took to the comments to refute the post’s claim that people at the mosque were uncooperative with police.
“This is not true,” Osman said. “Many people cooperated and answered questions and provided information to the responding officers. It’s sad to see Lewiston Maine Police Department saying not a lot of people cooperated with them. Wrong Messages like this is why people don’t want to cooperate!”
In an interview, Osman said that members the mosque were inside praying as part of the Ramadan services for about two hours prior to the shooting. In fact, the service ended about 9:30 and most of the congregation left to go home before the shots were fired, he said. Hassan, the victim, at some point left the mosque, got into a car then the another car approached and started shooting.
Osman said he and several others were still inside the mosque when they heard the gunshots.
“The shooting was not between the people who were in the mosque,” Osman said. “We don’t even know who (the shooters) are or why they were waiting outside the mosque.”
Police spokesperson Lt. Derrick St. Laurent said it is difficult to determine whether cooperation is being given when everyone reports that they heard gunshots, but did not see anything and don’t know anything about those involved.
“I mean, over 100 people at a Ramadan service and someone is shot outside in the parking lot— somebody’s got to know something,” he said.
St. Laurent said the lack of cooperation has become an immense issue and is extremely frustrating for officers who put their lives on the line responding to calls for reported shootings.
“We respond to these like it’s a mass casualty event,” St. Laurent said. “On the way to these, officers are already going through their minds thinking about where they are going and how they can effectively respond. It’s emotionally draining.”
On the other hand, Osman said his community is eager to help police.
“We definitely want to work with police,” he said. “What the police posted on Facebook just isn’t true. We want to work with them to stop (the crime in our community).”
Police ask for anyone with information to contact the department’s anonymous tip line at 1-207-513-3194.

CAIR-Minnesota Responds to National Report Indicating Minnesota Leads the Nation in Incidents Targeting Mosques
March 11, 2025
CAIR Executive Available for Media TODAY, 1-3 PM at CAIR-MN Office : 1821 University Avenue W, #306 St. Paul, MN 55104
CAIR’s Civil Rights Report Shows Islamophobia at All-Time High, with Viewpoint Discrimination a Key Factor
The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today responded to CAIR’s newly released 2025 Civil Rights Report, “Unconstitutional Crackdowns,” which highlights a troubling increase in Islamophobic incidents nationwide. Alarmingly, the report shows that Minnesota leads the country in reported incidents targeting mosques, with 15 documented cases in 2024—three times higher than the next highest state, California.
According to the report, Islamophobia is at an all-time high, with CAIR offices across the country receiving 8,658 complaints in 2024, marking a 7.4% increase from 2023.
“Minnesota leads the nation in attacks against mosques now for the past three years, with 44 incidents—including arsons that have caused over $3 million in damages. This troubling trend must be reversed,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein. “CAIR-Minnesota is working with state leaders to support nonprofit security grants and other efforts to ensure prevention. Additionally, Minnesota has seen an increase in other areas of Islamophobia, including the targeting of Muslim professionals.”
Among the documented incidents in Minnesota were multiple acts of vandalism, intimidation, and threats against mosques, particularly in St. Anthony and the Twin Cities metro area. These incidents ranged from attempted break-ins and harassment to violent physical attacks on worshippers.
The report also highlights three major national trends:
A Shift in Targeting: In 2024, Muslims, Palestinians, Arabs, Jews, African Americans, and Asian Americans were increasingly targeted for speaking out against genocide and apartheid, marking a shift from traditional religious discrimination to viewpoint-based crackdowns.
Rising Employment Discrimination: Workplace discrimination emerged as the most reported category, making up 15.4% of all complaints. Many cases involved retaliation against employees for expressing support for Palestinian human rights.
Increase in Law Enforcement Encounters: Reports of discriminatory law enforcement actions surged by 71.5%, reflecting a growing pattern of university administrators and law enforcement agencies targeting student activists and Muslim-led protests.
While the report paints a grim picture, it also highlights key victories for civil rights in 2024, including a 9-0 Supreme Court ruling against the federal No Fly List, legal victories for 25,000 individuals impacted by the Muslim Ban, and FTC actions to prevent the sale of Muslim user data.
MEDIA AVAILABILITY:
CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein and CAIR-MN representatives will be available for media interviews TODAY, March 11, from 1-3 PM at the CAIR-Minnesota Office: 1821 University Avenue W, #306 St. Paul, MN 55104

USAID staff told to shred and burn classified documents
March 12, 2025
Staff at the US Agency for International Development (USAID) have been told to shred and burn classified documents and personnel files.
The request raised alarm among employees and labour groups amid the ongoing dismantling of the agency.
Acting Executive Secretary Erica Y Carr sent an email that thanked staff for clearing out classified safes and personnel documents from a Washington DC office and told them to meet in the building's lobby for an all-day disposal event on Tuesday.
"Shred as many documents first, and reserve the burn bags for when the shredder becomes available or needs a break," her email to staff read.
Typically, documents placed in burn bags for disposal are sealed and then taken to a secure site for incineration.
The email asked staff not to overfill the burn bags and label them with the words "SECRET" and "USAID (B/IO)" - which stands for bureau, or independent office - using permanent markers.
The BBC has viewed a copy of the email, which was also reported by its US partner, CBS News. It was first reported by ProPublica.
The US State Department did not immediately return a request for comment.
It was not immediately clear if the agency had preserved copies of the documents marked for destruction.
The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA), a union representing USAID staff, was aware employees had been asked to shred documents, spokesperson Nikki Gamer told the BBC.
The union said it was "alarmed" by the reports and warned that such documents "may be relevant to ongoing litigation regarding the termination of USAID employees and the cessation of USAID grants".
The Trump administration faces multiple lawsuits over its dismantling of USAID, which began shortly after Trump took office in January. Unions and other groups have challenged the administration's power to shut down an agency and freeze funds that had been established and approved by the US Congress.
AFSA noted that federal law dictates that government records must be preserved as they are "essential to transparency, accountability, and the integrity of the legal process".
The union warned that " the unlawful destruction of federal records could carry serious legal consequences for anyone directed to act in violation of the law."
Government agencies do occasionally destroy paper records of classified materials and other documents, but strict procedures govern the process.
The Federal Records Act of 1950 sets out guidelines for the proper disposal of documents and creating backup or archival records, including electronic records.
The email sent by Carr did not contain some of the details traditionally found in a records disposal request, raising concerns about procedure, experts told the BBC.
"There is no indication in this email order that any thought is being given to proper retention or even identifying which records can be destroyed and which records cannot," said Kel McClanahan, executive director of the National Security Counselors, a non-profit law firm in Washington.
Mr McClanahan filed a complaint with the National Archives and Records Administration, asking them to "take immediate measures" to stop the destruction of records.
The loss of personnel records could also cause serious complications for federal employees who need to verify or process their employment benefits.
USAID was one of the first targets of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), which was established by the Trump administration to root out what they view as waste and fraud in the federal bureaucracy. Billionaire Elon Musk is helping lead the agency.
Musk referred to the agency as "evil" and the White House has argued that the agency's international programmes were a wasteful use of taxpayer dollars.
Over a few dramatic weeks, the agency was essentially shut down, with thousands of employees being laid off or placed on administrative leave. Many foreign service officers stationed abroad received little to no instructions for how to return home.
Many USAID staff remain on administrative leave, which allows them to receive pay but keeps their lives and careers in limbo.
The Trump administration named Secretary of State Marco Rubio the acting head of USAID in February and announced that Pete Marocco, who works at the State Department, would oversee its daily operations.
The Trump administration also ordered a temporary freeze on foreign aid that included funds distributed by USAID, which sent shockwaves through the international development community and forced some private companies and nonprofits to lay off staff.
On Monday, Rubio announced on X that the administration was cancelling "83% of the programmes at USAID."
"The 5200 contracts that are now cancelled spent tens of billions of dollars in ways that did not serve, (and in some cases even harmed), the core national interests of the United States," he wrote. The State Department would administer the roughly 1,000 remaining grants.

Trump offers new 51st state deal to Canada
11 Mar, 2025
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would impose an even higher levy on Canadian imports, doubling steel and aluminum tariffs to 50%. He also reiterated that he wants to annex the world’s second largest country, stating that the only way to resolve the tariffs standoff would be for Canada to become the “cherished” 51st state of the US.
Trump announced the move in a post on his platform Truth Social, explaining that the hike in tariffs was in response to the 25% retaliatory surcharge on electricity exports to the US imposed on Monday by Ontario, Canada’s most populous province.
“I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD,” Trump wrote, adding that the hike would come into effect on Wednesday.
The president also demanded Canada drop what he had described as “anti-american farmer tariff of 250% to 390% on various US dairy products,” as well as other “egregious” levies. A failure to comply will result in further action, namely the targeting of Canadian car production using measures set to “essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business,” Trump warned.
Trump announced 25% tariffs on Canada early in February, but delayed them for a month, until last Tuesday. Exemptions were granted to Canadian automakers and goods covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) until April. Ottawa responded by imposing tariffs on $30 billion worth of American products, with an additional $125 billion in duties set for next month.
Trump also repeated his claims that the US has been “subsidizing” Canada by more than $200 billion a year, but suggested joining the United States as “our cherished Fifty First State” would be the best way to fix the outstanding issues between the two nations, and that both of them would greatly benefit from it.
Starting in December 2024, Trump and his close circle repeatedly expressed support for the idea of taking over Canada. The idea has been rejected by Canadian leaders and the population alike. A recent YouGov poll suggested that up to 77% of Canadians firmly oppose annexation, while only some 15% are in favor of it.
Incoming Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to fight and win the trade war with Washington, admitting however, that “this victory will not be easy.” Carney also rejected ceding sovereignty to the US, stating on Sunday that “Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape, or form.”

PM Anwar Stresses Importance Of Strengthening Islamic Policies In Education
11/03/2025
KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed the importance of strengthening Islamic policies, particularly in education, and several government initiatives to build the inner strength of the Muslim community. Prime Minister’s senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said Anwar welcomed a delegation of religious scholars from pondok institutions and madrasah in Kelantan at his office this morning, where they exchanged views and discussed current Islamic issues and community development. The visit followed an invitation from the Prime Minister himself after the group attended a breaking-of-fast event at Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque in Putrajaya yesterday“The Prime Minister values the views shared by the scholars, particularly on turath (heritage books) education and ideas to empower pondok institutions in Malaysia. “They also offer advice on strengthening the spirit of brotherhood, fostering understanding and love, eliminating hatred and ensuring a clear explanation of the MADANI government’s initiative on Islam,” he said. Tunku Nashrul said this during the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Daily Briefing, which was streamed live on Anwar and PMO Malaysia’s Facebook page today. He said the Prime Minister and the religious scholars concurred that many matters could be mutually agreed upon, especially issues related to Islam, instead of magnifying differing viewpoints. Sarawak’s free tertiary education preparations complete, awaiting fund disbursement, says state minister
12 Mar 2025
KUCHING, March 12 — Sarawak’s plan to provide free tertiary education is in its final stages and will be implemented next year, said state Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
According to him, all necessary preparations have been made, with only the disbursement of funds remaining.
“Everything has been done except for that final stage, which is to disburse the money.
“Once the money has been handed over to the ministry everything is already taken care of,” said during the STEM Catalysts Raspberry Pi press conference at Sarawak Skills here today.
Sagah also said that the first batch of students under the free tertiary education initiative would be enrolled between April and August next year, depending on the intake schedules of local universities.
While there is no specific quota for each university, the initiative will initially be limited to Sarawak’s own institutions and will cover science-related courses.
“As long as it is the defined courses, which are science-related courses mainly in engineering and all that,” he said.
In addition to science courses, he also said a few selected arts-related disciplines would be eligible.
He also revealed that finance, accounting, law, and psychology would be covered, with more details to be announced in November.
“If I tell you now, it takes away the excitement but those courses will be included. But for now, it depends on the needs of our industries,” he said.
Furthermore, Sagah emphasised that the programme aims to align students’ education with industry demands to ensure better employment opportunities upon graduation.
“We don’t want to sponsor students and then later on they come back and can’t get a job. Because in any event, the blame will always be on the government,” he said.
When asked about potential challenges faced by rural students in accessing the free tertiary education initiative, Sagah stated that no formal studies had been conducted but believed the issue was more about interest and educational emphasis rather than capability.
He said he didn’t think rural students might struggle to meet the requirements.
“I think it’s a question of how much interest we put in. Of course, a lot has to do with teachers’ commitment and the emphasis that we put on it,” he said.
He cited Chinese middle schools as an example, noting that they have traditionally placed strong emphasis on mathematics.
Sagah assured that further details on eligible programmes would be announced in November, allowing students ample time to prepare.
“Let them study hard first. I will release the detailed process so that we all know,” he said.
Among those present during the press conference were state Education, Innovation and Talent Development Deputy Minister Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Sarawak Skills executive director Hallman Sabri, Sarawak Education Department director Omar Mahli, Sagah’s ministry deputy permanent secretary Aneilia Siam. — The Borneo Post

With MCMC’s explanation out, PMO says spreading false claims on ‘3R’ fines will harm public harmony
By Anis Zalani
12 Mar 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, March 12 — The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has today urged Malaysians to understand the reasons why there were differences in the amount of fines in two recent cases involving “racial, religious and royalty” issues or “3R”.
Speaking on behalf of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah urged the public to stop spreading any misinformation on the matter, since it will tarnish public harmony.
“The prime minister emphasised that all parties must understand the amendments to acts and laws that were previously approved, even if there are differences in penalties and fines imposed,” he said in PMO’s daily briefing here.
“Any misconceptions or inaccurate information shared on this matter will only create unhealthy perceptions at a time when we are all urged to continue fostering harmony and societal well-being.”
He said that Anwar expressed hope that all Malaysians, regardless of race, can put an end to divisiveness and move forward to ensure harmony and mutual respect among the people and the nation.
Anwar also extended his appreciation to any party that has ceased spreading negativity or attempting to stir unrest, he added.
Earlier, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) released a frequently asked questions (FAQ) document explaining its decision on the matter.
In the document, MCMC said Era FM operator Maestra Broadcast Sdn Bhd was fined RM250,000 based on a recent amendment to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, while the case involving comedian Harith Iskander and Facebook user Cecelia Yap had come before the amendment.
Last night, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that no further action will be taken against Era FM hosts Nabil Ahmad, Azad Jazmin John Louis Jeffri, and Radin Amir Affendy over their recent video clip mocking the Hindu community and the Thaipusam celebration.
Harith had previously expressed his reaction to what he saw as the absurdity in the furore against the “ham and cheese” sandwich sold in convenience stores, while Yap had commented in his post with an offensive remark involving Muslims.

Delegate voting aims for fairer contest in PKR leadership polls, says Nik Nazmi
By Malay Mail
12 Mar 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, March 12 — PKR’s central leadership election is using a delegate voting system this year, a move seen as more transparent and reducing the influence of “cai” or candidate alliances among contestants.
PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad told Berita Harian that while the system relies on delegate votes, it still involves a significant number — nearly 30,000 delegates.
The Setiawangsa MP added that the decision was not made hastily but was unanimously approved at a special PKR congress.
“This system ensures a fairer and more representative election. Previous polls prioritised numbers over representation.
“As a result, some branch chief candidates won purely by mobilising central candidates.
“This election also mandates diversity, requiring each branch delegation to comprise at least 30 per cent women and 30 per cent members from the Youth wing,” he was quoted as saying today.
Previously, Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim criticised the shift from a one-member-one-vote system, arguing that it undermines PKR’s democratic principles by limiting the decision-making to selected delegates rather than the entire grassroots membership.
Nik Nazmi, who is also the minister of natural resources and environmental sustainability, clarified that the one-member-one-vote system is still used at the branch level to select eligible candidates.
“Branch-level elections continue to follow the one-member-one-vote system,” he said.
