August 15, 2023
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has recommended
the removal of a 150-year-old mosque at the Sunehri Bagh Road roundabout to the
High Court “for safe and smooth flow of traffic”.
The court was hearing a plea by the Delhi Waqf Board
seeking to restrain the NDMC from causing any harm to the mosque. In its
response to the plea, the NDMC said the area falls in the high-security zone,
being near Central government offices, Parliament, and offices of high-ranking
Defence officers. “Due to the movement of senior officials and foreign
dignitaries, the heavy traffic congestion on this roundabout has become a
matter of serious concern,” the NDMC said. The civic agency told the court that
it had carried out a joint inspection with the Delhi Traffic Police twice, and
the officials concerned had unanimously concluded that the religious structure
needed to be removed or relocated.
In its petition, the Delhi Waqf Board had argued that
the mosque’s existence was not the cause of traffic in the area and that the
board had received intimation about the inspection on a less than 24-hour
notice.
Justice Prateek Jalan extended the interim order directing
the authorities to maintain the status quo and listed the matter for further
hearing on October 6.

Aug 15, 2023
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday
said he has an unwavering belief that India will celebrate its Independence Day
in 2047 as a developed country and emphasized that national character would be
an important catalyst to India’s progress.

Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Tuesday (HT Photo/Sanjeev
Verma)
“I have an unwavering belief that in 2047, when the
country will celebrate 100 years of independence, my country will be a
developed India,” PM Modi said at the Red Fort on Tuesday.
PM Modi, who also reiterated his promise to make India
the world’s third-largest economy within the next five years, said: “And I am
saying this on the basis of the strength of my country. Saying on the basis of
my available resources and most of all on the basis of my youth power under 30
years of age. I am telling this on the strength of my mothers and sisters”.
Modi added that the target to become a developed
nation in 25 years was not just a dream but a “resolution of 140 crore
countrymen.”
“And to prove that resolution, there is the
culmination of hard work and its biggest strength is national character. The
countries that have made progress in the world, the countries that have come
out after crossing the crisis, along with everything else, there has been an
important catalytic agent, that has been the national character. And we have to
move forward by giving more emphasis to the national character,” the PM said.
“May our country, our national character be bright,
mighty and intense; This is the collective responsibility of all of us. And for
the coming 25 years, we should follow only one mantra, this should be the
pinnacle of our national character. The message of unity, living the unity of
India, the unity of India should not be harmed, neither my language will be
like this, nor will I do any step like this. Efforts will continue to be made
from my side to connect the country every moment,” PM Modi added.
PM Modi also added that the government has a clear
resolution. “There is no question mark on our resolution. But we have to accept
some realities and solve them,” he said, “Transparency and fairness are our
strong requirements. It should be our collective responsibility to nurture that
source of strength through institutions, as citizens and as families,” he said.
PM Modi maintained that India has no dearth of
resources but reminded that the Amrit Kaal (the next 25 years) was also the
time for duty.
“When the war of independence was going on, the
generation that was born before 1947 got the opportunity to die for the
country. They did not leave any chance to die for the country, but we do not
have the chance to die for the country. But there cannot be a bigger
opportunity than this for us to live for the country. We have to live every
moment for the country, along with this resolution, we also have to make a
resolution for the dreams of 140 crore countrymen in this immortal period. The
resolution of 140 crore countrymen has to be converted into achievement and
when the tricolour will be hoisted in 2047, then the world will be praising a
developed India,” Modi said.

Cape Town: Parliament Looks To Amend Divorce Act To

14 August 2023
CAPE TOWN - Parliament is looking to amend the
country’s more than 40-year-old Divorce Act for the first time to include
Muslim marriages.
"They are given the same protection as any other
child of any other marriage in South Africa that includes maintenance,
guardianship, care and contact."
“There, they would look at whether the husband is the
spouse in more than one Muslim marriage, so that women are afforded protection
where that is the case.”
Parliament is still considering whether to proceed
with a private member’s bill introduced by the Al Jama-ah party to recognise
Muslim marriages.
Muslim religious marriages are not included in a draft
marriages bill also currently before Parliament and open for public comment
until the end of August.

Barred From The Pool, Doused With Alcohol: Muslims
Targeted At Montenegrin Beach Resorts
A family takes photos next
to a crescent moon-shaped decoration placed in the town of Ulcinj on April 9,
during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
------
August 14, 2023
By Srdjan Jankovic
PODGORICA -- Two incidents in quick succession this
month that targeted Muslims in religious dress have cast a shadow over
Montenegro's sun-splashed coast and its reputation for religious tolerance.
First, on August 4, a Kuwaiti woman in an Islamic head
scarf and her family were doused with an alcoholic beverage from a hotel
balcony overlooking the sidewalk in the medieval town of Budva on the Adriatic
coast.
Two days later, a man berated and barred a teenager in
a Burkini -- the Muslim-inspired swimsuit that covers all but the face, hands,
and feet -- from a pool near Utjeha Beach, which is about 20 kilometres south
of the coastal town of Bar. Asked why, the man responded: "Because I hate
Muslims and 300 guests object to it."
But some Montenegrins have responded to say they can't
recall such incidents occurring in the past in their corner of the Balkans.
"Islamophobia, and especially gender-based Islamophobia,
is present in Montenegro," longtime human rights activist
AleskandarZekovic told RFE/RL's Balkan Service. "In both incidents, the
targets of the attacks were women, which means that the practice of religious
identity by women is very much the target of attacks by those who are driven by
some kind of intolerance toward diversity."
Around one-fifth of Montenegro's 620,000 residents
identify as Muslim, divided mainly between Bosnian-speaking ethnic Bosniaks and
ethnic Albanians.
Bar and its environs have been hailed for years as a
model of multifaith coexistence, including to a considerable extent during the
1990s. The region is also a popular tourist destination among Muslims from
elsewhere in Europe and farther abroad.
Some locals trace that "tradition of
coexistence" back more than a century to a chatty mufti who got along
famously with his Orthodox and Catholic counterparts; others say it stretches
back much further.
But nationally, a spate of anti-Muslim incidents
followed elections in 2020 that were marked by Serbian Orthodox activism and a
resurgence by Serbian nationalist parties.
In Budva, an 18-year-old Austrian national of Serb
descent was fined 250 euros ($272) for "brazen and reckless" behavior
toward the Kuwaiti tourists, specifically for "spilling liquid" on
them, according to an official statement obtained by RFE/RL. Alcohol is banned
under strict interpretations of Islam.
In Utjeha, local radio and TV outlet Rozaje News
shared a video on Facebook of a man later identified as Dragan Djurovic, the
owner of a beachfront restaurant, shouting insults at a group that included a
girl in a burkini, saying they couldn't use the pool. The video, from August 4
and posted three days later, included the "because I hate Muslims"
retort. He said her presence would frighten off "normal" guests.
On August 6, a man whose family is from the
northeastern Montenegrin city of Rozaje but who lives in Belgium complained to
police that his daughter had been insulted by the man and prevented from using
the Utjeha Beach "in a burkini swimsuit."
Investigators from Bar and the Montenegrin capital,
Podgorica, concluded that there had been no criminal wrongdoing and merely
pledged to initiate misdemeanor proceedings "if it is determined that
there are elements of a misdemeanor in the actions."
Montenegro's controversial Bar to Boljare highway was
financed by the Export-Import Bank of China with an immense loan and created
long-term economic risk by saddling the country with debts to Beijing that once
totaled more than a third of the state budget.
After some public outcry, the man in the video,
Djurovic, said the video clip had been edited selectively and said guests in
hijab are welcome "but not at the swimming pools, where there is a sign
stating that bathing in clothing is not allowed for hygiene reasons and the
opposition of guests."
Burkinis are the creation of a Lebanese-Australian
fashion designer and are usually made of similar fabric as other swimsuits.
While initially intended to comply with hijab, a strict interpretation of
Islamic dress, they also gained popularity among non-Muslims eager to block
potentially cancer-causing rays of the sun.
France, Germany, and Belgium have grappled with
burkini bans that add a layer of complexity to questions of religious practice
in secular societies. A group of Belgian communities commissioned an opinion
piece in 2017 from the independent public institution Unia that solicited the
views of experts in which it said burkinis posed no health, safety, or hygiene
risks.
"I guess it's legal and legitimate to hate
Muslims in 'liberated' Montenegro," RifatFejzic, head of the Islamic
Community in Montenegro, commented after the authorities' response to the
Utjeha incident. He urged the government to do more to ensure that diversity is
respected in the country.
"Hatred must not be tolerated in any form, and it
should have been considered whether there are elements of a criminal
offense," Veselin Radulovic, a lawyer with experience on rights issues,
said. "We have elements of hatred across the nation. It should not have
been concluded so leniently, with only a misdemeanour."
Bosniak Party lawmaker Kenana Strujic Harbic called it
a sign that the "not-so-long-dormant beast of primitivism, savagery, and
backwardness" has been reawakened in Montenegro.
Around 70 percent of the population of the Ulcinj
municipality, of which Utjeha is a part, declares itself Muslim, and burkinis
are a fairly common site on Ulcinj's beaches.
Arjona Resulani, a journalist from Ulcinj who broke
barriers when she became the first presenter regularly to appear on Montenegrin
television in Islamic dress, told RFE/RL's Balkan Service after the Utjeha
incident that she's been wearing a burkini for months and "I haven't
noticed any condemnation."
She said that included the beach at Utjeha. But
"after what happened, of course, I won't [wear] it again. I wouldn't like
to be in a situation like the girl from yesterday, where I feel bad about my
choice."
Montenegrin law bans discrimination on religious
grounds and is monitored by an ombudsman whose determinations may be enforced
by courts.

Who is Monu Manesar, Indian vigilante accused of
inciting Haryana violence?
By Alishan Jafri
14 Aug 2023
Nuh, India – In February this year, two Muslim men
were abducted and allegedly burned alive in their car by a group of cow
vigilantes in India’s northern state of Haryana.
As the charred skeletons of the two men – Nasir
Hussain, 28, and Junaid Khan, 35 – were discovered inside an SUV in the state’s
Bhiwani district, the main accused, 28-year-old Mohit Yadav, became a poster
boy of cow vigilantism in India and a subject of extensive public scrutiny.
Haryana is governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been accused of patronising Yadav,
better known as Monu Manesar, and preventing his arrest in numerous such cases
of cow-related attacks and even killings.
Many Hindus belonging to the privileged castes
consider cows sacred. The sale and consumption of beef are banned in several
Indian states, mostly in the north.
Dozens of Muslims have been lynched on suspicion of
killing or transporting cows since 2014 in attacks critics say were enabled by
the rise of Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi to power.
In Nuh, Haryana’s only Muslim-majority district,
Manesar heads the local cow protection unit of the Bajrang Dal, the far-right
youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council or VHP), which in
turn is affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the BJP’s
ideological mentor.
Founded in 1925, the RSS aims to create an ethnic
Hindu state out of a constitutionally secular and religiously diverse India.
The secretive organisation has millions of lifetime members across the world’s
most populous nation and also abroad.
On July 31, the VHP and the Bajrang Dal decided to
take out a religious procession through Nuh, with many participants carrying swords,
tridents, sticks and firearms, and allegedly raising anti-Muslim slogans.
Two days before the procession, a Facebook video went
viral, showing Manesar exhorting Hindus to congregate “in large numbers” for
the procession in Nuh, saying he will also be there.
According to the police and the Hindu groups, the
mostly Muslim residents of Nuh, angry over the February killings of Nasir and
Junaid and other such incidents involving Manesar, attacked their procession
with stones and burned some vehicles along the highway.
Nuh’s Muslims, in turn, accuse the Hindu groups of
starting the violence, in which at least six people, including two Bajrang Dal
members and two police guards, one of them Muslim, were killed.
Soon, the violence spread to the neighbouring Gurugram
district where a mosque was attacked and its imam beaten and stabbed to death.
In response to the violence, more than 1,000
properties – mostly belonging to Muslims – were bulldozed by the Haryana
government in Nuh, forcing an Indian court to ask if it was an “exercise of
ethnic cleansing”.
Last week, several village councils in the region and
a leading farmers’ group demanded Manesar’s immediate arrest to restore
communal harmony and peace in the region, less than 100km (62 miles) from the
national capital, New Delhi.
Since his college days, Manesar, who holds a
polytechnic diploma in engineering, has been a member of the Bajrang Dal, a
group with a decades-old history of attacking minorities, mainly Muslims and
Christians.
He was only 21 when a horrifying video, again from
Haryana, showing him and his men attacking Muslims went viral in the summer of
2016. The video showed two Muslim men, their faces swollen and bloodied, being
forced to eat cow dung after they were beaten for allegedly transporting beef.
Such videos are shared widely by right-wing Hindu
groups on social media and WhatsApp groups to terrorise Muslims and other
minorities. Soon, Manesar began to gain notoriety as a hardline vigilante.
His YouTube channel won a silver play button for having
over 200,000 subscribers while his Facebook page boasted of more than 83,000
followers.
His posts mostly featured videos of high-speed chases
and crashes, men flashing firearms and firing at trucks allegedly carrying
beef, and photos and videos of injured men, usually Muslims, attacked by his
team. Some photos showed him with powerful politicians and officers, including
Home Minister Amit Shah.
Despite Meta and Google taking down his Facebook and
YouTube pages respectively earlier this year, his videos are still shared
widely by numerous fan pages run by right-wing groups and individuals.
Meanwhile, Manesar began to appear in debates on
pro-BJP news channels, where he defended his violent cow vigilantism and
attacks on Muslims.
In 2021, Manesar was invited to speak at a
mahapanchayat, or a grand council of villages, called in support of some Hindu
men accused of murdering a Muslim gym trainer, Asif Khan, who was also from
Nuh.
At the mahapanchayat, Manesar was introduced as someone
who shoots and gets shot at by “cow-smugglers”. In his speech, Manesar asked
the crowd to prepare a list of Muslim men allegedly involved in “love jihad” –
a far-right conspiracy theory that believes Muslim men target Hindu women
through romance and marriage in order to convert them to Islam.
After the killings of Hussain and Khan in February,
multiple victims came out in public with chilling testimonies and video
evidence of torture posted online by the vigilante groups. The demands to
arrest Manesar and his associates grew.
Imran Khan told Al Jazeera his cousin, Waris Khan, a
motorcycle mechanic, was also allegedly lynched by Manesar’s gang a few weeks
before Nasir and Junaid were murdered.
While police claimed Waris’ death was an accident, a
video appeared showing him and two other men being forcibly shoved into a car.
The man shooting the video asks the men to tell their names on camera.
Imran alleged the video was telecast live on Manesar’s
Facebook page and showed Waris injured and bleeding, hours before he succumbed
to his injuries at a government hospital in Nalhar.
In recent years, Nuh, also known as Mewat, has become
an easy target for vigilante raids under the garb of cow protection, adding to
anger and distrust among its residents.
“There was anger in the whole village when Monu
Manesar was not arrested after Nasir and Junaid’s murder. If he was not given
impunity by the government, he would not be roaming free. If he had not
released his video before the July 31 procession in Nuh, riots would not have
taken place,” Maksood Khan, a 22-year-old truck driver from neighbouring
Rajasthan state, told Al Jazeera.

Independence Day: More medals for cops in anti-Maoist
operations than those in J&K
Aug 15, 2023
NEW DELHI: In continuation with a trend seen since
this year's Republic Day, the number of police medals awarded on Independence
Day eve for gallantry displayed in fighting left-wing extremism (125) have
surpassed the count of those announced for personnel engaged in counter-terror
operations in J&K (71).
On Monday, 954 police medals were announced, including
a President's Police Medal for Gallantry to be awarded to CRPF assistant
commandant Loukrakpam Ibomcha Singh, 229 police medal for gallantry, 82
President's police medal for distinguished services and 642 police medal for
meritorious service.
CRPF assistant commandant Loukrakpam Ibomcha Singh,
part of the paramilitary forces' Kashmir Valley quick action team, was honoured
with PPMG for an operation on June 21, 2020, in which he performed a daring
room intervention to neutralise a dreaded terrorist holed up in a building.
As many as 125 or 54% of the 230 gallantry awards
recognise acts of bravery in Naxal-hit areas, while 71 or 30% medals honour
personnel engaged in fighting terrorism in J&K. Eleven personnel deployed
in the North-East are also in the PMG list. Among the various police forces,
the maximum gallantry medals have been bagged by J&K police, followed by 33
by Maharashtra police, 27 by CRPF, 24 by Chhattisgarh police and 22 by Tamil
Nadu police.
The shift, to some extent, may be explained by the
improving security situation in J&K and a lull in operations during Covid
lockdown. On the other hand, the fight against Left-wing extremism has entered
a decisive state as the counter-Naxal forces move deeper into the CPI (Maoist)
bastions in the jungles of Chhattisgarh and adjoining states.
A key PMG awardee this I-Day eve is IGP, Kashmir,
Vijay Kumar. He has been leading counter-terror operations in J&K's Kashmir
division from the front.
In terms of the overall tally, there is a tie between
CRPF and UP police for the No. 1 spot with 89 medals each, though CRPF's 29
gallantry medals far surpass the UP police's 13.
As many as 20 officers of CBI have been awarded the
President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and Police Medal for Meritorious
Service. Six officers — joint director Nawal Bajaj, SP Virender Mohan Mittal,
additional SP Maharshi Ray Hajong, deputy SP Nilambur Narayanan Srikrishnan and
sub-inspectors Geeta Paul and Rajeshwar Singh Rana have been awarded
President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. Fourteen CBI officers have
been awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service, it said.

CAN tackles Muslim groups over Sanwo-Olu’s
commissioners-nominee list
By Dachen Isaac
August 15, 2023
The Lagos State chapter of the Christian Association
of Nigeria (CAN), has taken on the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), and other
Muslim bodies for criticising the list of commissioners nominated by Governor
BabajideSanwo-Olu.
The Islamic organisations had, last week, slammed the
governor over the list, claiming they had been marginalised after fighting to
return the governor to office in the 2023 gubernatorial election.
The over 30 Muslim groups under the aegis of the Joint
Muslims Forum (JMF), had expressed dissatisfaction after Sanwo-Olu sent the
list to the House of Assembly for confirmation, calling on the House to
disregard the list which they said did not have a balance as it favoured the
Christian community with just eight Muslims on the list of the 39-man list.

Biden administration urges colleges to pursue racial
diversity without affirmative action
Aug 14, 2023
WASHINGTON: Colleges can focus their recruiting in
high minority areas, for example, and take steps to retain students of color
who are already on campus, including by offering affinity clubs geared toward
students of a certain race. Colleges can also consider how an applicant’s race
has shaped personal experience, as detailed in students’ application essays or
letters of recommendation, according to the new guidance.
It also encourages them to consider ending policies
known to stint racial diversity, including preferences for legacy students and
the children of donors.
“Ensuring access to higher education for students from
different backgrounds is one of the most powerful tools we have to prepare
graduates to lead an increasingly diverse nation and make real our country’s
promise of opportunity for all,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a
statement.
The guidance, from the Justice and Education
departments, arrives as colleges across the nation attempt to navigate a new
era of admissions without the use of affirmative action. Schools are working to
promote racial diversity without provoking legal action from affirmative action
opponents.
Students for Fair Admission, the group that brought
the issue to the Supreme Court through lawsuits against Harvard and the
University of North Carolina, sent a letter to 150 universities in July saying
they must “take immediate steps to eliminate the use of race as a factor in
admissions.”In its guidance, the Biden administration offers a range of
policies colleges can use “to achieve a student body that is diverse across a
range of factors, including race and ethnicity.”

Laura Loomer ‘Terrific’ In New Video
By RowaidaAbdelaziz

Former President Donald Trump praised Laura Loomer, a
self-described “Islamophobe,” as “terrific” and “very special” in a video
posted Sunday.
“You are a very opinionated lady, I have to tell you.
And in my opinion, I like that,” Trump tells Loomer in the video she shared on

Loomer, who said she spent time with Trump on Sunday

Iran Says It Is Committed To Resolving Nuclear Dispute
Through Diplomacy
August 14, 2023
DUBAI, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Iran is committed to
resolving its nuclear dispute with world powers through diplomacy, the
country's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian told reporters in a
televised news conference on Monday.
"We have always wanted a return of all parties to
full compliance of the 2015 nuclear deal," Amirabdollahian said.
Indirect talks between Washington and Tehran to revive
the nuclear agreement have stalled since last September.
Having failed to revive the pact, Tehran and
Washington said on Thursday they had reached an understanding under which $6
billion in Iranian funds will be unfrozen from South Korea while five American
nationals detained in Iran will be released.

‘Written out the history books’: the British spy who
planned the Iranian coup
Julian Borger
15 Aug 2023
Seventy years ago, the fate of Iran hung in the
balance, when a US-UK coup to oust the elected prime minister appeared to have
failed. The CIA was ready to pull the plug on the operation, but a 28-year-old
British intelligence officer, monitoring events from a clandestine base in
Cyprus, insisted on persevering.
The coup – which took place this week 70 years ago –
ultimately succeeded, Mohammad Mosadegh, the leader who was popular in Iran for
nationalising a British-run oil-field, was detained, and the Shah flew back to
Tehran, strengthened.
Most intelligence work is collecting information. It
is rare for a spy to change the course of history in the way this MI6 officer,
Norman Darbyshire, did in 1953. British interests were restored in the short
term but the shah went on to become a reviled dictator, paving the way for the
1979 Islamic Revolution and the state of enmity between Iran and the west that
has endured ever since.
Despite the scale of events he set in train, very
little was known about Darbyshire, who planned the putsch and was instrumental
in its success. He had been put in charge of the operation by MI6 despite his
young age, because he was fluent in Farsi and had already spent nearly a decade
in Iran. From a collection of huts outside Nicosia known as the ‘stud farm’,
Darbyshire rallied his agents to whip up protests in the street. This
ultimately swung momentum from Mosadegh towards the shah.

Is the U.S.-Iran hostage swap finally materialising?
PRIYALI PRAKASH

The story so far: Iran on Thursday moved five Iranian
Americans from prison to house arrest as part of a tentative deal that is still
being negotiated and can lead to their full release. Iran agreed to the release
in exchange for around $6-$7 billion frozen in South Korea because of sanctions
on the country, an Associated Press (AP) report said.
However, Mohammad Jamshidi, the Iranian President’s
Deputy Chief of Staff for Political Affairs, said on Friday that the American
detainees will remain in Iran until the full transfer of frozen funds, as per
an Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) report.

UK should finally acknowledge role in 1953 Iran coup,
says David Owen
Julian Borger
15 Aug 2023
The UK should finally acknowledge its leading role in
the 1953 coup that toppled Iran’s last democratically elected leader, for the
sake of Britain’s credibility and the Iranian reform movement, a former foreign
secretary has said.
The US formally admitted its role 10 years ago with
the declassification of a large volume of intelligence documents, which made
clear that the ousting of the elected prime minister, Mohammad Mosadegh, 70
years ago this week was a joint CIA-MI6 endeavour. The formal UK government position
is to refuse to comment on an intelligence matter.

Iran’s flawed strategy of promoting Latin American
ties
DR. MOHAMMED AL-SULAMI
August 14, 2023
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi visited three Latin
American countries in mid-June. This trip was an opportunity to visit three
revolutionary countries that are under US sanctions, namely Venezuela,
Nicaragua and Cuba. These countries are also ideologically close to the
revolutionary Iranian state, as they oppose the US-led international order and
Washington’s foreign policies.
One of the trip’s objectives was to publish diplomatic
statements outlining Iran’s convergence with the revolutionary Latin American
countries against US pressures and policies and to present a common agenda.
Raisi explained that Latin America is no longer “the backyard of the Americans”
because of the search for independence of each of the Latin American countries.
Despite the ideological convergence between Iran and
the revolutionary Latin American countries, they do not complement one another
from an economic standpoint. For example, even though Iran and Venezuela
proclaimed during Raisi’s visit that they aimed to reach a trade volume of $10
billion and eventually $20 billion, official trade reached only $3 billion in
2022. Also, Iran’s relationship with Nicaragua is now focused more on developing
military cooperation in order to counter US influence in Latin America, rather
than on economic matters, and Cuba has been a historical partner of Iran since
the 1979 Iranian revolution.
Overall, it can be said that the Iranian strategy in
Latin America is based on exporting and reinforcing the revolutionary ideals
that are specific to the populist ideology of the founder of the Islamic
Republic, Ayatollah Khomeini.

Pilgrimage to Medina, Mecca was a life-altering
experience
by Hassan BadruZziwa
August 15, 2023
In June, The Observer’s Hajji HASSAN BADRU ZZIWA and
wife traveled to Muslim holy cities of Medina and Mecca for their first hajj.
It was a grueling and surreal three weeks there. In
this first of two-part series, he shares his pilgrim’s experience from
preparation to life and rituals in Medina. For decades, the dream of embarking
on the hajj had been constant in my heart but I always kept postponing it.
That’s until I broke the jinx behind me a few weeks ago.
Hajj is a significant pilgrimage in Islam that is
considered one of the five pillars of the faith. It is an annual pilgrimage to
Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and is obligatory for all able-bodied Muslims who can
afford it. It is a challenging experience meant to cleanse followers of sin and
bring them closer to Allah (God).

UN: Islamic State still has thousands of fighters
across Syria and Iraq
By EDITH M. LEDERER
15-08-2023
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The Islamic State group still
commands between 5,000 and 7,000 members across its former stronghold in Syria
and Iraq and its fighters pose the most serious terrorist threat in Afghanistan
today, UN experts said in a report circulated Monday.
The experts monitoring sanctions against the militant
group, also known by its Arab acronym Daesh, said that during the first half of
2023, the threat posed by IS remained “mostly high in conflict zones and low in
non-conflict areas.”
But the panel said in a report to the UN Security
Council that “the overall situation is dynamic,” and despite significant losses
in the group’s leadership and reduced activity in Syria and Iraq, the risk of
its resurgence remains.
“The group has adapted its strategy, embedding itself
with local populations, and has exercised caution in choosing battles that are
likely to result in limited losses, while rebuilding and recruiting from camps
in the northeast of the Syrian Arab Republic and from vulnerable communities,
including in neighboring countries,” the experts said.

The blast occurred at a city hotel frequented by

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, though

Two years on, we fear that a second withdrawal
Afghanistan is under way
15 Aug 2023
Two years ago today, international troops and
diplomats hastily withdrew from Kabul and Taliban rule returned to Afghanistan.
Afghanistan was already in the grip of a humanitarian
crisis, after decades of conflict and with the intensifying impact of climate
change. Since then, the significant deterioration of the country’s economy has
turned that crisis into a catastrophe.
Nearly 29 million Afghans are now in need of
lifesaving assistance and more than 15 million face acute hunger. The effects
of this fall disproportionately on women and girls, with UN experts estimating
that 20 years of progress for women and girls’ rights has been erased since the
Taliban takeover.

Afghanistan refugees being let down by UK, says think
tank
By Becky Morton
15-08-2023
Many Afghan refugees have been "let down" by
the UK, with some living in hotels for up to two years and now facing eviction,
a think tank has said.
Operation Pitting saw the UK airlift around 15,000
people out of Kabul - including British nationals, as well as people who worked
with the UK in Afghanistan and their family members.
Those who had nowhere to live were placed in
government-funded hotels. This was supposed to be temporary accommodation but
by the end of March, there were still around 8,800 Afghans living in hotels.
The government has imposed a deadline of the end of
August for Afghans to be moved out of hotels, but councils have warned some are
facing homelessness as they cannot find anywhere else to live.

The appointment of the former senator, who founded the

President Dr Arif Alvi administered the oath to the

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi
has reportedly said he is aware of calls for him to step down as Umno president
for the party’s dismal showing in the six state elections.
In an interview today, The Star reported that Ahmad
Zahid said that while he admits his responsibility over Umno's performance, the
party's leadership will shoulder the task of turning the ship around.
“I am aware of such calls [to step down]. What I can
pledge is that I, with the help of the party’s leadership, will do more to
regain the people’s confidence.
“We will scrutinise our approach and strategies. We
will adopt new ones, so we can win over the hearts and minds of voters again,”
he was quoted as saying in the English daily.

Hawaii's governor warns that scores more people could
be found dead following wildfires on Maui
Aug 14, 2023
LAHAINA: Hawaii's governor warned that scores more
people could be found dead following the Maui wildfires as search crews go
street by street through neighborhoods where the flames galloped as fast as a
mile a minute across the landscape.
The blazes that consumed most of the historic town of
Lahaina, are already the deadliest in the U.S. in more than a century, with a
death toll of at least 96.
"We are prepared for many tragic stories,"
Gov. Josh Green told "CBS Mornings" in a recorded interview that was
aired Monday. "They will find 10 to 20 people per day, probably, until
they finish. And it's probably going to take 10 days. It's impossible to guess,
really."

German minister stuck in Abu Dhabi after another govt
plane problem
Aug 15, 2023
BERLIN: Germany's foreign minister was waiting in Abu
Dhabi on Monday after a technical problem on her government plane - the latest
in a succession of such incidents - forced it to return to the airport rather
than continue to Australia. AnnalenaBaerbock was due to arrive in Canberra on
Monday night. But her German air force Airbus A340 had to return to Abu Dhabi
after a refuelling stop because of "a mechanical problem with the landing
flaps," ministry spokesman Sebastian Fischer wrote on X, formerly known as
Twitter.
It was the latest in a string of problems with
Germany's government planes, some of which are aging, that have affected
various senior officials. In May, Baerbock had to extend a trip to the Persian
Gulf region by a day because of a damaged tyre on an aircraft when she was in
Qatar. The plane Baerbock was using for her flight to Australia was involved in
a 2018 incident that resulted in then-Chancellor Angela Merkel and then-finance
minister Olaf Scholz making a delayed departure to a G20 summit in Argentina on
a commercial flight. In that case, an electrical distributor box failed,
affecting the radio system and a fuel system and meaning that the aircraft
couldn't dump fuel.
