‘Minority Chaupal’: Lukewarm Response To BJP's Outreach Despite Colonel Sofiya Qureshi Push

The BJP on Tuesday appeared to scale down the launch of its nationwide campaign to reach out to minorities, pivoting on the symbolism spun around Colonel Sofiya Qureshi during Operation Sindoor, after the event failed to elicit any public enthusiasm.
The event, called Minority Chaupal, was held at a hotel in Shaheen Bagh, the epicentre of the women-led movement against the Narendra Modi government’s new citizenship matrix in 2019 that the BJP and its ecosystem had vilified. Even that attempt to tap into the symbolism of the place to project a minority-friendly face came a cropper as the event witnessed thin attendance, with most of those present being party workers.
Only two of those in the audience were women despite the government’s earlier bid to weave a campaign around Colonel Qureshi. Faced with Opposition allegations that the government was trying to gain political mileage from a military operation, the BJP had denied any plan involving Colonel Qureshi.
The BJP Minority Morcha, which organised the event, tried to put up a brave face, saying the gathering was meant to be a training and awareness session for party members. The Sankalp Se Siddhi Minority Chaupal is meant to be an outreach initiative to mark 11 years of Narendra Modi rule.
Reacting to the lacklustre participation, Minority Morcha national president Jamal Siddiqui said: “The gathering was for training purposes. The outreach will unfold at the grassroots where workers will host chaupals (gatherings) in minority-dominated localities and spread awareness about the welfare schemes rolled out by the BJP-helmed Centre.”
Referring to Colonel Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, Siddiqui said: “The way those two young women led from the front should ignite a spark in our girls too. One of the girls, Qureshi, belongs to our community.... They gave a befitting reply to the neighbouring country.”
Nazia Mirza, who said she has been a BJP member for six years, said: “Colonel Qureshi is an inspiration for every woman. Why should Muslim girls be left behind when it comes to joining the army? I will visit homes and tell young girls to join the army and the Agniveer scheme.”

Islamist Terror Leader, Atef Al-Awlaki, Of Al-Qa’ida In The Arabian Peninsula Calls For Assassination Of Donald Trump, JD Vance In 30-Minute Rant
Jun 11, 2025

---------
An Islamist terror group leader has released a disturbing video calling for the assassination of US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and several top advisers. He said their strong support for Israel was the reason behind the threat, according to the New York Post.
The Yemen-based figure is Sa'ad bin Atef al-Awlaki, who is the leader of al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).
In a disturbing 34‑minute video titled 'Inciting the Believers', released on Sunday, the terror leader urged American Muslims to “take revenge” and strike at those he called “infidel Americans”. He named Trump, Vance, as well as figures like Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and billionaire Elon Musk. “Go after them and their families and all those who have any ties or are close to the politicians of the White House,” al‑Awlaki said.
He further said, “There are no red lines after what has been happening to our people in Gaza,” and endorsed recent antisemitic attacks and prior assassination attempts on Trump, according to security sources.
The video also includes a broader incitement of violence against Jewish people in the US. “Do not leave a single safe place for Jews — just as they have not left any homes, shelters, or respite for the Palestinians,” al‑Awlaki said. “Even hospitals are being bombed … Take revenge.”
Al‑Awlaki became head of AQAP in March 2024 and has a $6 million US bounty on his head offered by the State Department. AQAP is officially designated a foreign terrorist organisation by the US government. The Associated Press reported that al‑Awlaki’s video was his first since assuming leadership and also urged lone‑wolf attacks targeting leaders in Egypt, Jordan and Gulf states over the Gaza conflict.
According to analysts, AQAP appears to be trying to regain prominence amid growing tensions in Gaza and rising influence of the Iran‑backed Houthi movement in Yemen.

Islamist Group, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, Drives Tourists AwayIn Sylhet And Tangail for Promoting "Immorality" And "Obscenity"

Local Islamist groups disrupted Eid celebrations in Sylhet and Tangail in separate incidents over allegations of promoting "immorality" and "obscenity".
In Sylhet, people visiting the Utmachhara tourist spot in Companiganj on Sunday (the first day of Eid) were asked to leave by members of the Companiganj Jubo Jamiat, the youth wing of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh.
In a video that has since gone viral, the group members are heard telling visitors to leave the area and not return, claiming that local Islamic scholars and residents had agreed to bar tourism on account of "immoral activities, including drinking and indecent behaviour".
The incident occurred at Charar Bazar in Uttar Ranikhai union, a scenic location featuring large riverbed stones that typically attract many visitors from within and outside the district, especially during holidays.
"In the name of tourism, people are harming our environment and negatively influencing our youth," said Mufti Ruhul Amin Siraji, vice-president of the Companiganj Jubo Jamiat.
He admitted to being part of the group seen in the video and said the decision to bar tourism was made jointly with local elders before Eid.
The move has been condemned by environmental and rights activists.
Abdul Karim Kim, trustee of the Environment and Heritage Conservation Trust, called it a serious threat to Sylhet's tourism, which supports the local economy and creates jobs.
He also suspected the involvement of illegal stone extractors, saying the action does not reflect the broader interests of the community.
"Authorities must investigate who is behind this."
Contacted, Azizunnahar, upazila nirbahi officer of Companiganj, said a meeting with locals has been scheduled to discuss the incident. However, no specific time for the meeting was given.
Mohammad Bashir Uddin, additional superintendent of the Sylhet Tourist Police, said they were not deployed at the site. "We are investigating the incident."
Meanwhile, in Tangail's Kalihati upazila, the screening of the film "Taandob" was abruptly halted under pressure from Islamist groups. This happened though the organisers had obtained permission from the district council to run the film for a month.
Kamruzzaman Saiful, head of marketing at Jaaz Multimedia, had rented the Auliabad Auditorium for Tk 10,000 per day and paid five days' rent in advance. However, he was forced to stop the screening due to the pressure.
"The evening before Eid-ul-Azha, local mosques and madrasas used loudspeakers to demand that the screening be stopped," Saiful told The Daily Star.
People identifying themselves as members of "Alem Samaj" and "Ulama Parishad" staged a protest and reportedly tore down posters promoting the film.
Fearing unrest, the turnout on Eid day was low at the auditorium. "We had to cancel the daytime shows and only ran the evening show with 20 to 25 viewers," Saiful said.
The next day, Islamist leaders collected signatures for a petition demanding a complete shutdown of the screening and submitted it to the upazila administration.
Saiful said repeated requests for support from the authorities went unheeded. "We asked for police help before Eid, but got no response. We also contacted the district Special Branch and the superintendent of police's office, but received no help as offices were closed for Eid."
Though he had permission to continue screening Taandob beyond Eid, a local arbitration with the Islamist leaders forced him to stop. "They told me to leave immediately," he wrote in a Facebook post, calling the incident a dangerous precedent for the country's film industry.
Hazrat Ali, a madrasa teacher and vice-president of the local Imam Parishad, said, "Given concerns over obscenity, local religious leaders and residents opposed the screening of the film."
Rights activist Anisur Rahman Shelly called the move "a blow to cultural freedom," noting that the initiative was intended to provide Eid entertainment and support the local film industry.
Kalihati UNO Md Khairul Islam, currently on leave, confirmed the organisers had permission to screen the film. He also acknowledged that local Islamic leaders submitted a petition to halt the screening.
"Film screenings are not banned in the country. We will talk to relevant parties and try to find a peaceful solution."
Meanwhile, Kalihati Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jakir Hossain said police will act based on the upazila administration's decisions.

"Zaynabiyya Abaya": How A Dress Code Debate Exposes Iraq's Deeper Fault Lines
2025-06-10
Shafaq News/ A recent administrative decision by the Baghdad Provincial Council, aiming to officially recognize the "Zaynabiyya Abaya" as an acceptable dress code within state institutions, has unexpectedly ignited a widespread and heated debate across Iraqi social media.
What might, at first glance, appear to be a mundane local policy pronouncement, has swiftly escalated into a telling microcosm of Iraq's intricate struggles with identity, religious influence, individual freedoms, and the enduring shadow of political opportunism.
Zaynabiyya Abaya: A Garment Steeped in Meaning
The defining characteristics of the Zaynabiyya Abaya set it apart as one of the most conservative and encompassing forms of Islamic dress. Designed for ultimate modesty, it is notably loose-fitting and voluminous, intended to shroud the entire body. Its wide cut ensures that the wearer's figure and bodily contours remain completely concealed, a central tenet of its design. The vast majority of Zaynabiyya Abayas are black, a deliberate choice of color that serves to minimize visual distraction and avoid drawing undue attention to the wearer, thereby reinforcing the principle of modesty. Unlike many modern abayas that incorporate intricate embellishments, vibrant colors, or contemporary cuts, the Zaynabiyya Abaya is characteristically devoid of ostentatious decorations, elaborate embroidery, or flashy patterns. It is typically an open-front garment worn over regular clothes, with relatively narrow sleeve openings designed to prevent the arms from being exposed; this minimalist approach ensures that the garment itself does not become a source of attraction or adornment. At its essence, the Zaynabiyya Abaya is viewed by its adherents as the quintessential manifestation of Islamic dress principles, prioritizing chastity, humility, and the complete spiritual and physical veiling of the woman, serving as a tangible form of emulation of the revered women of the Prophet's household.
While traditional abayas have been a staple of dress in Iraq and the Levant for centuries, the concept of the "Zaynabiyya Abaya" evolved to represent the pinnacle of modesty and traditional Islamic covering. It is not exclusively an Iraqi garment; its widespread adoption can be observed across many Muslim-majority nations, though its prominence varies. In countries like Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Algeria, Egypt, parts of East Africa, Syria, and Turkiye, it is a commonly accepted, and often dominant, form of female dress. In other societies, such as Lebanon, parts of Central Africa, Malaysia, and Indonesia, it is more specifically worn by a significant segment of the population recognized for its religious commitment and piety.
Baghdad's Provocative Resolution
The Baghdad Provincial Council's recent vote on June 4, to officially sanction the Zaynabiyya Abaya as part of the formal dress code within the capital's state institutions was championed by Huda Jalil Al-Aboudah, who chairs the Environment Committee within the council and is affiliated with the politically influential Al-Hikma (Wisdom) Movement, led by Ammar al-Hakim. Al-Aboudah explicitly stated that the decision aims to "enhance respect, dignity, and modesty," particularly within examination halls.
The announcement immediately triggered widespread confusion and, subsequently, a torrent of backlash. The initial public perception was that the Council was mandating the abaya for all women in official settings, including those who do not typically wear a headscarf (non-hijabis) or women belonging to other faiths. This misinterpretation, whether accidental or by design, ignited a fierce debate, forcing Al-Aboudah to issue a swift and defensive clarification. She categorically stated that the decision was not an imposition and did not apply to women who do not wear the hijab or individuals of other religious affiliations. Instead, she insisted it merely granted official recognition to the Zaynabiyya Abaya, thereby validating it as a formal dress option for women who choose to wear it, aligning it with their "identity and Islamic culture."
Despite the clarification, Al-Aboudah's subsequent remarks only added fuel to the fire. She revealed her ambition to "submit a request to the Prime Minister, the Council of Ministers, and members of the House of Representatives to generalize the decision across all of Iraq, to preserve and protect the dignity of Iraqi women."
This aspiration to expand a provincial decision nationwide further amplified concerns about the potential for future, more widespread impositions. Curiously, she also preemptively denied any electoral motivations, asserting she would not be participating in upcoming elections – a denial that, for many, only underscored the political nature of her initiative.
It is crucial to emphasize that, unlike some other countries in the region, Iraq does not currently have a general, legally enforced hijab mandate. While wearing a headscarf or abaya is deeply ingrained in Iraqi culture and widely accepted, it remains, legally speaking, an individual choice. The Iraqi government does not impose it as a prerequisite for educational enrollment, employment, or participation in public life. This fundamental context makes the Council's decision, even with its subsequent clarifications, appear perplexing and, to some, an unnecessary intervention in personal freedoms.
Legal Quagmire and the Chasm of Interpretation
The legal validity and implications of the Baghdad Provincial Council's decision have exposed a significant schism among legal experts, reflecting broader ambiguities within Iraq's legal framework regarding religious and personal freedoms.
Ali Al-Tamimi, a prominent legal expert, has voiced support for the decision from an administrative standpoint. He argues that the decision is "correct and without fault" because Islam is enshrined as the official religion of Iraq. From his perspective, the resolution aligns with the constitutional principle of freedom of dress, as it permits rather than mandates the wearing of the abaya during official duty.
This, he asserts, implies that other women retain the freedom to wear different forms of attire.
Al-Tamimi further bolsters his argument by referencing Article 11 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which generally allows individuals to choose their clothing, provided it does not violate public order (laws) or public morals (prevailing customs, values, and ideals). His interpretation leans on the idea that by formalizing an existing practice, the council is not restricting freedom but acknowledging a cultural and religious choice within a predominantly Muslim society.
However, Mohammed Jumaa, another legal expert, offers a starkly contrasting view, dismissing the decision as "legally meaningless." Jumaa contends that there is no existing law that prescribes an official uniform for Baghdad province or any other Iraqi province. Furthermore, he emphasizes that there has never been any legal prohibition against wearing the abaya in any public or private sector setting across Iraq.
He points out that numerous women already hold high-ranking governmental positions, such as deputy ministers or general directors, and perform their duties while wearing the Islamic abaya, which is undeniably "part of Iraqi culture."
For Jumaa, the council's decision is redundant at best, potentially an overreach of authority, and serves no practical legal purpose, as the freedom to wear the abaya already existed without this decree.
Political Maneuvering and Misplaced Priorities
Beyond the legal debate, the timing and nature of the abaya decision have triggered deep skepticism among a significant segment of the Iraqi public, particularly students, activists, and those weary of political posturing.
Athraa Hazem, a university student in Baghdad, who herself wears the abaya daily, attests that its wear is widely accepted on campus and that she has never faced harassment due to it. Yet, she observes that the sudden "timing of this decision and the surge of interest from officials coincide with elections, therefore it might carry a clear political agenda."
This sentiment is echoed by Alia Al-Hathal, a prominent lawyer and activist, who states unequivocally that "there is no objection to the abaya decision," as it's already a common sight in markets, universities, and government offices. However, she asserts that "some are exploiting this decision due to the proximity of elections."
Al-Hathal's critique extends beyond mere timing to question the fundamental priorities of the Baghdad Provincial Council, particularly the role of Al-Aboudah, the head of the Environment Committee. Al-Hathal powerfully argues that a committee tasked with environmental oversight should be focused on the urgent, visible, and life-threatening crises plaguing Baghdad: rampant waste accumulation, severe water pollution in the Tigris River, and the resulting surge in diseases.
For Al-Hathal, prioritizing a symbolic dress code, especially one that was not previously prohibited, is a glaring example of misplaced priorities and a thinly veiled attempt at "self-promotion" ahead of elections. She also draws a sharp parallel to past instances where lawmakers introduced controversial social legislation (such as personal status laws) that critics viewed as electoral ploys, suggesting that Al-Aboudah might be attempting to replicate such a strategy.
Furthermore, Al-Hathal raises serious allegations about the initial intent behind the resolution, claiming that the decision's original wording or underlying aim might have been to mandate or impose the abaya. According to her, it was only after the fierce public backlash that Al-Aboudah "changed the concept," clarifying that it was merely about "not preventing" those who choose to wear the abaya.
Al-Hathal dismisses this clarification as "unconvincing," given that no such prohibition ever existed in the first place, citing examples of abaya-wearing women freely attending universities and even appearing in graduation photos.
Human Rights, Modesty, and Progress
The most profound and unyielding opposition to the Baghdad Council's decision comes from human rights activists who view it as a fundamental assault on individual liberties and a dangerous regression for women's rights in Iraq.
Lina Ali, a prominent activist, offers a scathing condemnation, asserting that the "abaya decision is oppressive and has no connection to human rights, especially for women." She goes as far as to state, "We have not seen such decisions even in the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah)," drawing a provocative parallel to pre-Islamic tribal societies.
Her critique stems from a belief that while societies evolve and human progress is constant, there persists a harmful tendency to view women as mere "commodities" whose attire can be controlled without legitimate justification, despite the absence of religious or customary compulsion.
Ali contends that such decisions inherently create an "atmosphere of oppression and self-flagellation" for women, fostering an unhealthy and regressive environment. She fundamentally challenges the notion that this decision is about "modesty," arguing that true modesty "is not compulsory" and cannot be legislated through clothing. Instead, she passionately defines modesty as an inherent quality of character, encompassing the "modesty of the tongue, mind, logic, and morals."
In a powerful concluding statement, Ali emphasizes the urgent need for Iraqi officials to shift their focus from superficial debates to the pressing realities confronting the nation. She implores them to instead "issue decisions that uplift the country's deteriorating reality and protect its wealth from theft," arguing that these are far more critical than "occupying the public with women's attire."

Jewish And Muslim Representatives Join Forces To Defend Circumcision
By Michelle Rosenberg
June 10, 2025
Dr Alejandro Sanchez, Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain MBE, Dr Antony Lempert, Hifsa Haroon-Iqbal OBE - picture by Simon Rothstein.
------------
The head of the Reform Beth Din and media director of the British Association of Muslims joined forces in a rigorous debate on religious circumcision at St Bride’s Church in Fleet Street this week.
Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain entered what he described as “the lion’s den” to join Hifsa Haroon-Iqbal at the discussion co-hosted by the National Secular Society (NSS) and Debate London.
Rabbi Romain argued that circumcision is not just a deeply significant part of both Jewish and Muslim traditions, but also that it is safe, carried out by medical professionals and practised by many people outside of faith communities for health and hygiene reasons.
Their opponents in the debate were Dr Alejandro Sanchez and Dr Antony Lempert of the National Secular Society, both longstanding campaigners against circumcision. Dr Lempert was brought up in a Jewish home but has described himself as “not Jewish”.
Rabbi Romain started his speech by joking about the truism that Jewish parents, especially Jewish mothers, are neurotic about their children’s health – and pointing out that there is no way the practice of circumcision would have continued for at least 4,000 years if it had been considered dangerous. Instead, he said, it would have gone the way of all the other things in the Torah that Jews do not keep today, as they are no longer appropriate.
He said: “For us, it may be a religious or cultural moment, but it is a highly regulated practice performed by highly-skilled doctors and surgeons who are additionally trained in circumcision.”
It was also noted that many people around the world, not of the Jewish or Muslim faiths, choose circumcision including a majority of Americans, those fighting against HIV in Africa and even the late Queen.
Rabbi Romain asked his opponents: “Do you think Elizabeth II was wrong to have all three sons circumcised at birth? Incidentally, she chose to have a mohel (Jewish circumciser) to do them – rather than the Court Surgeon or Harley Street doctor – as it was felt he was more expert.”
A mostly secular audience were largely in favour of the motion that ‘boys should not be ritually circumcised’. Issues raised were around child safeguarding and the dangers of unregulated practitioners. There were also questions about any possible long-lasting trauma or impact on sexual sensation as an adult, which Rabbi Romain countered.
He told of his own experience of being a circumcised male, who in turn circumcised his sons, saying: “I can tell you I have never ever suffered as a result and can guarantee you, that if I had any doubts, I would not have had my boys circumcised.”
Rabbi Romain also spoke of the more than 50 male converts, who chose to be circumcised as adults, he has discussed the matter with, adding: “I asked them all if it changed their sexual performance or sensation. They all said ‘no’… and they are the ones who are best placed to tell the difference of before and after!”

Beef being ‘weaponised’ against Hindus; Assamese people must take ‘non-compromising stance’: CM Sarma
June 10, 2025
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday alleged that beef is being “weaponised” against Hindus in the state, citing instances of pieces of the meat being purportedly thrown in public places after the Eid celebration last week.
Stressing that Assamese people have to take a “non-compromising” stance to push back illegal foreigners, he maintained that Assam was waging a struggle against forces which had “sympathisers” across the globe.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP state office, Sarma said, “Earlier, if a couple of Muslim families lived in a Hindu neighbourhood, they would be careful not to create any problems for the Hindus. If they wanted to have beef, they would go to their people living in Muslim-majority areas.”
“But now, it has become such that they will throw away the leftovers and waste around so that the Hindus in the neighbourhood have to eventually leave that place,” he added.
He cited the instances of beef being purportedly left in various places after Eid last week, including in front of Cotton University here.
“Someone can have it at Eid, but it cannot be weaponised against other people,” Sarma asserted.
He rued that no protests were held against the act and maintained that the number of voices opposing such incidents are coming down.
“Good Muslims oppose such acts. They do not post photos on Facebook holding beef,” he said, adding that he received just three phone calls from Muslim persons after these incidents to say that they do not approve of it.
The chief minister expressed apprehension that if things move as it is now, “in 20 years, beef will be thrown in front of Kamakhya temple”.
While police have a role in curtailing such incidents, support of the people behind the force is necessary for it to take decisive steps, Sarma added.
He asserted that the Assamese people have to take a “non-compromising stance to protect ourselves” and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government was willing to lend all its help.
“Modi ji is saying push back (illegal foreigners), but Assamese people are questioning why push back is happening. Most criticism of the push back is coming from Assamese people… Modi ji alone cannot protect us,” he said.
He claimed that all foreigners were sent away from Gujarat by PM Modi and not a single one went to the court, whereas in Assam, cases are filed daily against action on illegal migrants by Assamese petitioners and lawyers.
Sarma said that Congress and its legislative party head Debabrata Saikia had opposed the push back of foreigners in the assembly on Monday, but no organisation has protested their stand or media criticised the party for it.
He also cited Saikia quoting in the assembly that then PM Jawaharlal Nehru had opposed the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, which empowers district commissioners to identify foreigners and remove them. “This goes on to show that Nehru’s pro-foreigner stance was from 1950 itself,” he said.
“Our struggle is against forces which have sympathisers everywhere in the world,” Sarma maintained.

Two more held in Assam for ‘anti-Hindu’ posts on social media
June 11, 2025
Two more persons have been apprehended in Assam for allegedly being “anti-Hindu elements”, taking the total number of such arrests to 92 so far, since the Pahalgam terror attack in April, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
The police arrested Sabikul Islam from Lakhimpur for allegedly making a communally sensitive post on social media and Dulal Bora for a derogatory comment on Lord Krishna and Rukmini, he said.
“Anti-Hindu elements nabbed! Crackdown continues…. Total 92 culprits behind bars”, the chief minister posted on ‘X’ on Tuesday.
He had earlier said the ‘state-wide crackdown on traitors will continue and nobody will be spared”.
The police have launched action against those who were allegedly indulging in ‘anti-India and pro-Pakistan activities’.
Opposition AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam was earlier arrested on sedition charges for allegedly defending Pakistan and its complicity in the Pahalgam terror attack, but after he was granted bail in the case, he was booked under the National Security Act (NSA).

Harsh Mander: The assault of four Muslims and the two sides of India’s meat economy
Harsh Mander
Jun 11, 2025
At the end of another harrowing journey of the Karwan e Mohabbat to meet four men lynched by a mob in Aligarh on May 24, I return with only one great solace. That they are alive.
Savagely injured, traumatised, terrified. But alive.
Except for this outcome, their story is the same as ones I have heard too many times during at least a hundred journeys of the Karwan e Mohabbat to the homes of people lynched. The account of lynching that recurs in a loop is of young men meting out numbing violence on petrified unarmed men. Of their ferocity powered by the visceral hate of those who lead the land. Of cynical extortion. Of a complicit police force. Of the acquiescing onlooker.
The four lynched men – Aqil, Arbaaz, Aqeel and Nadeem – were all in their 30s or early 40s. They were of the Qureshi clan, the caste of Indian Muslims whose traditional occupation for centuries has been the slaughter of animals for meat. The killing of cows is of course banned by law, but buffalo meat is licit in Uttar Pradesh.
Before the Adityanath-led Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power, butchers were licenced to slaughter buffaloes in their abattoirs. This was an honest trade with no attendant dangers. But it was abruptly halted by the Adityanath government which refused to grant licences to the small slaughter-houses where animals had been lawfully butchered for many generations. This decision overturned the lives of tens of thousands of families in the meat business. The family of Aqil, Arbaaz and Nadeem was one of them.
It is mostly big beef factories that this government has licenced to slaughter buffaloes. During his first bid for national power in 2014, Narendra Modi accused the Congress-led government of abandoning the green and white revolutions to expand farm and milk produce and instead favouring what he called the “pink revolution” or encouraging the slaughter of animals for their meat.
The irony is that despite the hardening of laws prohibiting cow slaughter and a massive rise in cow vigilantism, in the 11 years of Modi’s leadership of the country Indian beef exports have steadily grown. Many of India’s largest beef exporting companies are owned by Hindus and some even by Jains. Despite the hateful discourse that surrounds this trade, this is by no means a Muslim monopoly. The further irony is that when the names of contributors to the BJP through electoral bonds were revealed, many beef export companies figured in the list.
For the family of Aqil, Arbaaz and Nadeem, the cancellation of licenses of their slaughter house posed a crisis of survival. Butchery was the only profession they knew. But fortunately, they still had licences to sell meat. The family owns seven meat shops in Aligarh. They would buy legal buffalo meat from a beef factory in Atrauli, about 40 kilometres from Aligarh. Each time they would buy around 900 kg of buffalo beef from the factory, pack this into a pick-up van and drive past a checkpoint on to the highway to Aligarh. The profit margins were small, they told us. They would buy the meat for Rs 230 a kilo, and sell it for Rs 260. The volume of sale, from seven meat retail shops, ensured a modest income for the extended family.
For Aqeel, the 35-year-old driver from a working-class family, livelihood options were even fewer. He would hire a pick-up van and transport a variety of goods. Among these was also, from time to time, the dangerous cargo of meat.
With the proliferation of violent “cow protection” groups – claiming allegiance with the Bajrang Dal, and having close links with the police, the local administration and the ruling BJP – the 40-kilometre journey from Atrauli to Aligarh was always fraught. However, there was no way to avoid it. The militant groups often extorted money from the meat transporters. The men who were lynched spoke of being waylaid some months earlier by a group of Bajrang Dal men who demanded their exaction money. When they refused, the Bajrang Dal members took them to the police station. There the police allegedly brokered a deal of Rs 2.9 lakh, and retained a portion of this for themselves. I have no way of confirming the veracity of this claim.
On the hot summer morning of May 24, the three men in the meat trade and the driver drove out of the beef factory in Atrauli at 8 am with their usual load of 900 kg of buffalo meat. Hum sirf ek number ka kaam karte hain (we only do legal work), they kept repeating when we met the badly injured men in the hospital. Their paper work was complete, including the bills of purchase and the licence of the veterinary doctor that the meat was buffalo meat.
Some four kilometres into the highway, eight men on four motorcycles blocked their way and forced them to park the pick-up van on the side of the road. “These were the usual Bajrang Dal men,” they told me. I asked how they were sure that they were from the Bajrang Dal. The saffron scarves, or gamchas, that they wrapped around their necks was the marker, they said. It is like a uniform.
The meat transporters showed the young men all their papers, pleading that the meat was not of a slaughtered cow, and everything complied with the law. The men who had blocked their path sneered and tore up the papers. The men in the pick-up begged to be allowed to continue their travel, but the vigilantes said other “brothers” were on their way.
Within a short while, around a dozen more motorcycles converged on the spot, the crowd of young men swelling ominously. They dragged the four men from the van where they were cowering, snatched their mobile phones and money, stripped down many to their underwear and began thrashing them viciously, with iron and wooden rods, bricks and stones.
Some minutes later, a police Gypsy jeep arrived. The beleaguered men ran desperately to the vehicle and crawled into it, begging the policemen to protect them. The policemen brushed aside their pleas brusquely, reportedly with communal slurs. After that it was open season for the mob. The crowd of attackers and onlookers continued to inflate. Some onlookers began to record videos, which are widely circulating. It is hard to watch these videos without your stomach lurching.
The incessant pitiless beating, the men’s desperate screams of pain, their bodies soaked in blood, their begging vainly for mercy. Some men even drove motorcycles over the legs of their quarry. You can spot the police in some of the videos, doing little to restrain the bloodthirsty mob. Chilling also is the fact that not one from the crowd intervenes to help the victims. The lynch mob set aflame the pick-up van with the meat. When the survivors evaluated their financial losses later, it was Rs 13 lakh for the pick-up van and Rs 2 lakh the cost of the meat.
The men began to lose consciousness. If matters had followed the course that I have observed in too many cow-lynchings around the country, the next step would have been their bleeding to death. That this did not happen was the result of the intervention of one man. A police officer of conscience. Yes, they do exist. I have worked long enough within the government system to affirm that there are good officials even in the worst of regimes. I will not name this police officer, because we live in such a twisted age that I don’t know if he will be rewarded as the hero that he is, or be punished.
He arrived, dispersed the mob, rescued the four men and rushed them for medical attention to the nearest district hospital, and from there to the medical college hospital in the Aligarh Muslim University. It is a grim commentary on the times that we occupy that these acts, which should be nothing more significant than the elementary fulfilment of his official duties, glow instead as rare acts of heroism. The families of the injured men we met said that their men would not have lived if the police officer had not intervened on time. They bless him and believe that it was Allah who sent him.
Rashid, the driver Aqeel’s brother, recalled to us, “He was unconscious when his wife first saw him. She called us on the phone and told us he was dead. When we saw him, there was not a part of his body that was not injured. Even the region around his eyes. It is the grace of Allah that he is alive. There were so many stitches on his head. They had beaten him with steel rods on his head and legs and back. They had also beaten him with bricks and stones.
Their experience in the district hospital was discouraging. Not only was it ill-equipped to deal with this kind of medical emergency. They spoke of a doctor who abused them and declared that since they were inveterate cow-killers, they deserved worse.
The university medical college was better. The staff, they said, were diligent and caring. But they seemed to be under pressure, because they kept trying to discharge them while their myriad wounds were still unhealed. Perhaps the authorities did not want their presence in the hospital to speak with the line of political leaders of various opposition parties who lined up to meet the injured men. The public statements of these leaders were damaging and embarrassing for the ruling party.
Ramji Lal Suman, Rajya Sabha MP from the Samajwadi Party, for instance declared, “These people [the attackers] have nothing to do with cow welfare. Several beef companies had paid huge amounts to the BJP in the Electoral Bonds Scheme. Several beef factory owners are Hindu. All this is done to divide society on religious lines and go after the minorities.”
Congress MP from Saharanpur Imran Masood said: “A joke was made of law and order, and they were beaten up. This was tragic, and the way the SHO saved the lives of those men. If he were not there, they wouldn’t have survived. But, the way they were beaten up and this behaviour of acting like goons. Is this how the rule of law will be established, that people are beaten and robbed on the road?”
The driver Aqeel was the most severely injured of the four and even at the time I write, he still hovers between life and death. His early discharge was the most unfortunate. His family quickly admitted him to a private hospital, where he was in the intensive care unit when we visited. Concerned people are paying the hospital bills. The remaining three men were in the general ward of the medical college. Their bodies still bore raw signs of their brutal lynching. Dozens of stitches on their heads, many broken bones, the flesh still torn from their bodies.
As we spoke with them, the injured men were remarkably stoic. Their pain was still visceral, their rage quiet. They wanted justice, they repeated, not revenge. But the police had registered crimes of cow slaughter against them, which fortunately had to be dropped when the laboratory certified the meat was of a buffalo. The police were unwilling to apply the crime of lynching and were slow in arrests.
But the greatest dilemma of the victim survivors was about what they would do to feed their families after their wounds healed. They saw no option except to go back to the same work, despite the manifest threats to their lives. They knew no other work.
Days after my visit to Aligarh, I am both haunted and edified by the words of driver Aqeel’s elder brother Rashid. Incidentally, his trade is running a cycle puncture repair shop. This is the stereotype of the Muslim loser that Prime Minister Modi recently purveyed.
But Rashid spoke with wisdom, sadness and grace. “It is because of Allah’s mercy and the support of so many good people that our Ateeq is alive,” he said. “Had people not reacted so quickly, our boy would have died, the police would have claimed the meat was cow meat, the other men would been have thrown into prison and bulldozers would have razed down our homes”.
“We cannot tell you who were those who attacked our boys,” he went on. “But this is clear, that behind them, backing them are powerful forces. Neither Hindus are bad nor Muslims are bad. It is these Bajrang Dal people who are goondas. The Bajrang Dal should be banned. If anyone among us does wrong, it should be the government, the constitution, the law which should act. If the constitution and law say killing cows is wrong, then it is wrong. Let the wrongdoers be punished. Let the courts even send them to the gallows. Imagine if there was cow meat in the van. Even then the Bajrang Dal goondas had no right to thrash them. They should have simply handed them to the police and let them punish the wrongdoers. What right do these Bajrang Dal people have to take the law into their own hands? If they are going to act in this way, then are we not just throwing away the Constitution?
He is mindful of the injustice to his community. “The big factory owners have the right to slaughter buffaloes, but we do not. Never mind. Yeh bhi sabar kar lenge [this also we will endure]. But we demand justice from the government for the lynching. Think what would happen if we had committed this lynching? We and our families would have been hounded; bulldozers would have demolished our homes. The videos clearly reveal who were the men who attacked our boys. They should be arrested and punished. Why are the police treating the attackers so lightly?”
He went on to affirm his love for his country. “I was born in India. This India belongs to us all, to Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians. But now hatred has entered the hearts of every child. No one, of any religion, should be free to cause harm to others. And the media should tell the truth.
“I have only this appeal to Modi Saheb and Yogi Saheb. Our Bharat was of brotherhood and love. Where has that love disappeared? I want back my Bharat, the Bharat that we had before 2014. Bring that back.”

Congress Leader Slams Govt, Alleges UAPA Misuse; Anand Teltumbde, Nodeep Kaur, Mahesh Raut, Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, And Safoora Zargar Were Arrested Under UAPA
June 11, 2025
Congress leader Pawan Khera on Wednesday strongly criticised the government for the ”misuse of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA)”, alleging that “Under the Modi government, law has increasingly been used to stifle dissent and delay justice.”
Between 2014 and 2022, only 2.55 per cent of the 8,719 UAPA cases resulted in convictions, indicating a clear pattern of abuse, Congress party’s Media & Publicity Department chairman Pawan Khera said in a post on social media handle X.
“Between 2014 and 2022, 8,719 UAPA cases yielded only a 2.55 per cent conviction rate, exposing its misuse to target critics, students, journalists, and activists. Pre-trial presumption of guilt, social media and media-driven trials, and the recent trend of dismissing habeas corpus petitions by the Supreme Court deepen this crisis of justice,” Khera asserted.
Recounting several cases of UAPA misuse, Khera cited ”the case of Anand Teltumbde, Nodeep Kaur, and Mahesh Raut, who were arrested under UAPA in the Bhima Koregaon case. Student activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and Safoora Zargar were arrested under UAPA for their alleged involvement in the anti-CAA protests. Journalists Fahad Shah and Irfan Mehraj were arrested under the UAPA for their reporting. Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakravarty, who were arrested under UAPA in a foreign funding case related to NewsClick in 2023.”
While Anand Teltumbde was released after serving 3 years in jail, Nodeep Kaur was granted bail the same year she was arrested, but she was allegedly beaten and sexually assaulted while in custody. Mahesh Raut has been in prison since 2018, Khera said.
As regards Student activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and Safoora Zargar, Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam have been in jail since 2020, he further noted.
”In the case of journalists Fahad Shah, Irfan Mehraj, Prabir Purkayastha, and Amit Chakravarty, Fahad Shah was released after 600 days. The rest continue to languish in jails,” Khera pointed out.
“These are just fragments of a far more entrenched rot. In reality, most of these are cases of vendetta against those challenging this government. Courts repeatedly highlight this abuse. Delhi HC explicitly stated, ‘Protest cannot be terrorism,’ releasing Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal, and Asif Tanha. SC freed journalist Zubair and climate activist Disha Ravi, criticising arrests as attempts to stifle free speech,” Khera stated in his lengthy post.

Kashmir beef consumption irks Pandits, sparks call for revival of scrapped slaughter ban
Muzaffar Raina
11.06.25
Kashmiri Pandits are up in arms against beef consumption in the Valley, pointing to a now-scrapped law that criminalised the slaughter of bovine animals.
The Kashmiri Pandit Sangharsh Samiti (KPSS) on Tuesday lauded the growing calls by local Muslims seeking a ban on liquor consumption in the Valley, saying it resonated with the social and religious ethos of the place.
“However, the silence surrounding the rampant beef trade is both disturbing and revealing. Over the past 35 years, the unchecked mushrooming of beef shops — openly displaying carcasses — has not only unsettled native Hindus but also Indian Hindu tourists, who form over 95 per cent of the region’s tourism economy,” Sanjay Tickoo, the president of the group, said.
“The discomfort is real, the questions valid, and yet the administration remains mute,” he added.
Tickoo was all praise for laws that criminalised cattle slaughter and imposed harsh penalties, which were opposed by Muslims in the past.
The slaughter of cows and other bovine animals was banned by the erstwhile Dogra rulers, with the prohibition continuing after 1947. Despite these laws, beef was widely consumed in rural Kashmir, but Srinagar residents gave it a wide berth.
Beef consumption, however, is gradually making inroads into the city.
“Historically, cattle slaughter was not only socially unacceptable in Kashmir but also legally prohibited. Under the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) of 1989, Sections 298-A to 298-D criminalised the slaughter of bovine animals and the possession of their flesh,” Tickoo said.
“Section 298-A prescribed up to 10 years of imprisonment for voluntarily slaughtering a cow, bull or calf. Even possessing their meat (Section 298-B) was punishable,” he said.
Tickoo said these laws reflected the “pluralistic sensitivities of the region” but after 2019, following the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, these provisions “were repealed under the guise of legal uniformity — ironically stripping Kashmir of its traditional safeguards that upheld interfaith harmony”.
No law currently bans beef consumption in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Pandit leader, however, claimed that beef outlets and slaughterhouses were operating illegally and their numbers were growing unabated.
“This unchecked expansion is not accidental — it flourishes with the tacit, unofficial consent of those in power, whose silence and inaction can only be explained by reasons that are obvious to anybody who is observant. Such complicity undermines not only the law but the very idea of secular governance,” he said.
In February, police had removed a signboard put up by a local traders’ association that asked tourists to respect the local culture and desist from drinking alcohol in Kashmir.

PM Modi praises MPs, diplomats for strong global messaging on terrorism post Pahalgam attack
10.06.25
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said he was proud of the manner in which the multi-party delegations presented India's views in various countries on the need to eradicate the menace of terrorism following the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor.
Modi hosted the members of the multi-party delegations, comprising parliamentarians and former diplomats, who travelled to 33 world capitals over the past few weeks.
"Met members of the various delegations who represented India in different countries and elaborated on India's commitment to peace and the need to eradicate the menace of terrorism. We are all proud of the manner in which they put forward India's voice," Modi said in a post on X.
Members shared their experience with the prime minister, with the central government having already praised the work of the seven delegations comprising over 50 persons, mostly current MPs.
Former parliamentarians and ex-diplomats were also part of these delegations that visited 33 foreign capitals and the European Union. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has already met the delegations and lauded their efforts in conveying India's strong stand against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.
"We apprised the Prime Minister of the overwhelming support extended by these friendly nations for India's resolute fight against terrorism and our unwavering commitment to global peace," Shiv Sena's Shrikant Shinde said in a post on X.
Shinde had led the delegation to the United Arab Emirates, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
"The Prime Minister lauded our efforts and shared his inspiring vision for enhancing India's stature on the world stage. His words have further motivated us to work tirelessly for the nation," Shinde said.
Four delegations were led by MPs of the ruling alliance, including two from the BJP, one from JD(U) and one from Shiv Sena, while three were led by opposition MPs, one each of the Congress, DMK and NCP(SP). BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad and Baijyant Panda, Congress' Shashi Tharoor, JD(U)'s Sanjay Jha, Shiv Sena's Shrikant Shinde, DMK's Kanimozhi, and NCP (SP)'s Supriya Sule led their delegations to different parts of the world.
The government had sent the multi-party delegations to portray a message of national unity in the fight against terrorism, with the likes of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi joining the ruling alliance members in championing the Indian cause abroad. Prominent former parliamentarians in the delegations included ex-Union ministers Ghulam Nabi Azad and Salman Khurshid.

BJP at Shaheen Bagh: Muslim girls should aim for the Army
Saman Husain
June 11, 2025
In a move aimed at expanding its outreach into the Muslim-dominated areas of the national capital, the BJP’s Minority Morcha held a ‘minority chaupal’ in Shaheen Bagh on Tuesday. The main purpose of this chaupal was to encourage young Muslim girls to consider careers in the Indian Army, it said.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, an Indian Army officer who garnered attention during Operation Sindoor, was repeatedly cited as a role model throughout the event. This was the BJP’s first such chaupal in the Capital under a broader national campaign celebrating the first-year anniversary of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government’s third term in office.
The event was held in a modest hotel room in the heart of the neighbourhood that rose to national prominence during the 2020 anti-CAA protests.
“Our daughter should become strong, she should be educated, she should be independent…,” said Jamal Siddiqui, National President of the BJP Minority Morcha and chief guest at the event.
“If anyone tries to harass, scare, or intimidate her, she should be able to give a befitting reply. We have to take our daughters out of their homes and into society. They should also go to the border… and show the strength of Indian women.”
“To teach Pakistan a lesson, the leadership of (explaining) air strikes on terrorist bases was handed over to two daughters, Colonel Sophia and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, and the world has been introduced to the courage, valour and bravery of Indian women,” he added. The chaupal featured a small but engaged gathering of two women and 20 party workers, and sought to familiarise attendees with the Agniveer recruitment scheme and other opportunities in the Armed Forces. Organisers also distributed copies of the Constitution and announced a one-stop camp for registrations under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. “This is not just about Army recruitment,” said Ashu Chaudhary, Delhi State Executive Member of the Minority Morcha and the event’s coordinator. “It’s about rights, awareness, and helping women from our community imagine a future where they are leaders.”
Attendees were also handed “data books” — kits detailing key government schemes across sectors such as education, employment, and health — with instructions to imitate similar minority chaupals in their localities and to share the data with other members of the Muslim community.
The BJP’s choice of Shaheen Bagh for the pilot chaupal carries political weight. Once the epicentre of the months-long protests, led largely by Muslim women against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, the neighbourhood had become a symbol of resistance — and now, as the BJP frames it, potential transformation.
“We all are sons of India. We all are citizens of India. These 11 years of the Modi government have brought light where there was darkness,” Siddiqui declared. Launching a scathing attack against the BJP’s political rivals, he added, “The Congress and AAP created that darkness. Now, it is our duty to spread awareness, take the government’s message and schemes to the people.”

After Sarasbaug closure, plea against entry ban on religious ground
Jun 10, 2025
Pune: Activists from the Muslim community on Monday submitted a letter to the district collector's office requesting an enquiry into the closure of Sarasbaug on Sunday after Rajya Sabha member Medha Kulkarni wrote to PMC objecting celebration of Basi Eid by eating non-vegetarian food in the garden that also hosts a temple.
Anwar Shaikh, director of Miss Farha Charitable Foundation who wrote the letter, claimed that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)'s decision to keep Sarasbaug closed was "discriminatory in nature", and action must be taken against officials involved in the decision. Basi Eid was celebrated a day after Saturday's Eid-al-Adha.
Shaikh, who tried meeting the PMC commissioner and district collector on Monday but could not, submitted his letter in their respective offices. Shaikh said he would move court, the state human rights commission and other constitutional forums for justice if timely action was not taken. "We also want a public apology from PMC officials for hurting the sentiments and denying public access. They should also give written assurances that no public space will be closed in future based on religion, politics or biased recommendations," he said.
Shaikh in his letter to the collector said the decision "created a sense of alienation and exclusion among tax-paying citizens, especially Muslims, who have an equal right to every public facility and violated the right to equality (Article 14), freedom to practice religion (Article 25), and freedom of movement and expression (Article 19) enshrined in the Constitution".
When contacted, PMC commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said he would examine the issue, check if the place (Sarasbaug) had been historically used for celebrations after Eid, and why the gardens department issued a closure notice on Sunday.
He said: "The allegation that I acted solely on the MP's letter is untrue. I received MP Medha Kulkarni's letter on Friday. As I do not know details about this garden, I called the head of the gardens department and told him to look into the matter. There is a temple inside the garden. I only know that Muslims were not allowed to visit the temple premises," he said.
Ram said: "However, if the Muslims were not allowed into the garden, then I will ask the head of the gardens department on what basis the decision was taken. There was no intention to hurt any religious sentiments."
Shaikh, however, said the public garden has hosted many Hindu religious festivals and even stayed open late to facilitate such festivals. "We have never objected to the park being used for Hindu religious festivals, because we respect all religions. Then why are we being discriminated against? Today it is the park, tomorrow you may block hospitals for us, saying we eat non-vegetarian food. If they wanted to protect the sanctity of the temple, they could have cordoned off the area around the temple or instructed people not to eat anything," he Shaikh.
MP Kulkarni told TOI that she had asked PMC to close the garden on Sunday as various Hindu organisations had complained that non-vegetarian food could be consumed on the temple premises during Basi Eid. "The entire area belongs to the temple trust, which was leased to PMC. It is not that the garden is separate from the temple. One can eat non-vegetarian food at home, but not near the temple."
Arvind Shinde, the city unit chief of Congress, said the PMC's "action was unconstitutional". He said: "I spoke to the commissioner over the phone and told him to take action against the superintendent of the civic body's gardens department. In all these years, nobody has complained about eating anything in the garden. This is the first time an MP is trying to disturb the harmony of Pune. If you had an issue with people eating non-vegetarian food, you should have said that or banned all kinds of eating on the garden premises.

Tripura Congress leader’s father, brother arrested after he makes ‘derogatory’ comments about CM
Scroll Staff
Jun 11, 2025
The Tripura Police on Monday arrested the father and brother of Congress leader Shahjahan Islam after he allegedly made derogatory remarks about Chief Minister Manik Saha and Bharatiya Janata Party minority wing leader Jashim Uddin, reported The Indian Express.
The arrests came hours after Islam’s home in Agartala was allegedly attacked by a mob. His father and brother, Khairul Islam and Najrul Miah, have been remanded to judicial custody till June 23, according to Maktoob Media.
The BJP has alleged that Khairul Islam and Najrul Miah assaulted party workers who had gone to their home to protest against Shahjahan Islam’s allegedly derogatory remarks. The Hindutva party also filed a police complaint against the Congress leader.
In a video posted on social media, Shahjahan Islam was said to have criticised the police and state government for failing to act against miscreants who allegedly disrupted livestock slaughter during the Muslim festival of Bakri Eid on Saturday, reported Maktoob Media.
He also allegedly called Saha and the BJP minority leaders “cheats” and asked members of the Muslim community to boycott them.
Bakri Eid, also known as Eid-al-Adha, commemorates the spirit of sacrifice and entails the slaughtering of livestock.
The Congress leader was referring to the incident when a cow was allegedly slaughtered in public in the Chhanban area of Gomati district’s Udaipur on Saturday, reported The Indian Express. Two persons were detained in connection with the slaughter.
There are no restrictions on cattle slaughter in Tripura. However, the Agartala Municipal Corporation has asked meat vendors to get registered as part of its plan to stop uncontrolled public slaughtering of animals, according to The Indian Express.
This is in line with the Tripura High Court’s judgement from February 2022. The court had directed the state government to prohibit the sale of meat in public places and streets.
Billal Miah, the BJP minority wing president in Tripura and the complainant against Shahjahan Islam, alleged that the Congress leader had made “obscene comments” about the chief minister.
“On one hand, there has been an attempt to malign the state government and on the other hand, there is a conspiracy to create unrest among communities,” Billal Miah was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
Meanwhile, in his statement to the police, Islam claimed that he was attacked by a mob upon returning home on Sunday night.
He alleged that some persons were brandishing firearms and wanted to murder him, but failed.
The Congress held a protest against the alleged attack.

US denounces UK, allies’ sanctions on Israeli far-right ministers
June 10, 2025
WASHINGTON: The United States on Tuesday denounced sanctions by Britain and four mutual allies against Israeli far-right ministers, saying they should focus instead on the Palestinian armed group Hamas.
“We find that extremely unhelpful. It will do nothing to get us closer to a ceasefire in Gaza,” State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce told reporters.
Britain, Canada, Norway, New Zealand and Australia “should focus on the real culprit, which is Hamas,” she said of the sanctions.
“We remain concerned about any step that would further isolate Israel from the international community,” she said.
The five Western countries imposed sanctions on Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir for “repeated incitements of violence” against Palestinians.
The two ministers faced repeated criticism but no formal sanctions under former US president Joe Biden. Since taking office, President Donald Trump has vowed unstinting support for Israel.
“If our allies want to help, they should focus on supporting Special Envoy (Steve) Witkoff’s negotiations and backing the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation when it comes to food and aid,” she said.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has distributed aid in coordination with the Israeli military, an effort criticized by the United Nations and longstanding aid groups, which say it violates humanitarian principles.

'Muslim countries have 644 times amount of land controlled by Israel': US ambassador Huckabee on two-state solution; slams allies UK, Australia
Jun 11, 2025
US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee suggested "Muslim countries" should give up some of their land to create a future Palestinian state.
Speaking to the BBC, Huckabee said Muslim countries have 644 times more land than Israel. "So maybe, if there is such a desire for the Palestinian state, there would be someone who would say, we'd like to host it,” he said.
Huckabee further called the idea of a two-state solution, where Israel and a future Palestinian state would exist side by side, “an aspirational goal.” This idea is widely supported internationally, including by past US governments.
The plan imagines a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
But in a different interview with Bloomberg, Huckabee said the US was no longer working toward creating an independent Palestinian state.
Afterward, state department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said that Huckabee was speaking for himself, and that the president sets US policy in the Middle East.
When asked if the US now opposes a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Huckabee said,: "I wouldn't say there can never be, what I would say is that a culture would have to change.”
"Right now the culture is that it's OK to target Jews and kill them and you're rewarded for it. That has to change.”
Israel itself rejects the two-state solution. It says any final agreement must come through talks with Palestinians, and that statehood cannot be a precondition.
Huckabee has long supported the idea of a “greater Israel,” meaning permanent Israeli control of the occupied Palestinian territories. He uses the biblical term “Judea and Samaria” to refer to the West Bank.
The ambassador also strongly criticised US allies, including the UK and Australia, for placing sanctions on two far-right Israeli ministers. The sanctions were issued over the ministers' "repeated incitements of violence against Palestinian communities" in the occupied West Bank.
He said, “I have not yet heard a good reason for why these two elected ministers have been sanctioned by countries that ought to respect the country's sovereignty and recognise that they have not conducted any criminal activity.”
The war in Gaza started in October 2023, after Hamas attacked Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking about 251 hostages. There are still 56 hostages being held in Gaza, and at least 20 are believed to be alive.
Since the war began, at least 54,927 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry. The UN says more than a quarter of those killed were children.

CAIR Action Alert: Urge Congress to Pass the NO BAN Act and Access to Counsel Act to Stop Discriminatory Travel Bans
June 10, 2025
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, is calling on all Americans to urge their Members of Congress to pass two urgently needed bills: the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act, sponsored by Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) and Sen. Chris Coons (DE), and the Access to Counsel Act, sponsored by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) and Sen. Alex Padilla (CA).
In response to President Trump’s newly issued travel ban targeting 19 mostly Muslim and African nations, it is more urgent than ever that Congress act to prevent future presidents from abusing immigration authority to impose blanket bans rooted in prejudice—and to guarantee detained travelers the right to speak with an attorney.
Adopting the NO BAN Act would:
Explicitly ban religious discrimination in visa and immigration decisions under the Immigration and Nationality Act.
Limit national origin-based travel bans by requiring the president to meet strict legal standards, including:
A compelling government interest,
Credible, specific evidence,
Consultation with Congress, and
Public reporting and time limits on restrictions.
Passing the Access to Counsel Act would:
Guarantee that individuals detained by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for more than an hour at ports of entry—including airports—can consult with an attorney or legal advocate.
Prevent rights violations and abuses like those seen during the original 2017 Muslim Ban rollout.
Together, these bills would place critical legal guardrails on the executive branch’s immigration powers and protect the civil liberties of immigrants, travelers, and their families.
Why Now?
On June 4, President Trump issued a new travel ban proclamation titled: “Restricting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the United States From Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats.” The order targets 19 mostly Muslim and African nations and threatens vague ideological screening tests that could be used to exclude immigrants based on their political or religious views.
The ban:
Fully suspends new immigrants and new travelers from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, and others.
Partially suspends new entry from seven additional countries, including Cuba, Venezuela, Laos, and Sierra Leone.
Applies only to individuals who are outside the U.S. on June 9 and do not already have a valid visa.
This ban risks:
Separating families, especially by blocking aunts, uncles, and other close relatives from reuniting with loved ones in the U.S.
Blocking students and patients from accessing educational and medical opportunities.
Chilling dissent and activism through the threat of ideological screening.
CAIR strongly urges anyone who experiences or witnesses harassment or civil rights violations linked to this ban to immediately report incidents to CAIR’s Civil Rights Department via the Report an Incident form.

CAIR-MI Welcomes Cancellation of Undercover Surveillance, Harassment of U. Michigan Anti-Genocide Groups
June 10, 2025
The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), a chapter of the nations largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the University of Michigan’s cancellation of undercover surveillance of anti-genocide student groups—but emphasized that this is only one of many necessary steps to address the university’s systemic suppression of pro-Palestinian advocacy and student free speech.
University of Michigan Interim President Domenico Grasso announced the cancellation of all contracts for private, undercover security on campus after a report revealed the university had been using plainclothes operatives to monitor and collect intelligence on student organizations protesting Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza.
SEE: UM cancels undercover private security contracts after threat report
“This cancellation is a welcome but long-overdue step in confronting the University of Michigan’s authoritarian tactics against students who dare to speak out against genocide,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid. “Deploying undercover agents to surveil and intimidate student protestors is a blatant violation of civil liberties and cannot be allowed to pass without consequences. The university must take full accountability and implement transparent, systemic reforms to ensure that no student is ever again targeted for their political or religious expression.”
CAIR-MI continues to call for a full, independent investigation into the university’s surveillance practices, public disclosure of any findings, and disciplinary consequences for those involved in violating student rights.

CAIR Designates Florida Rep. Randy Fine as ‘Anti-Muslim Extremist’ Following ‘Unceasingly Violent’ Rhetoric
June 10, 2025
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today designated Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) as an “anti-Muslim extremist” on its Islamophobia hate list following his unceasingly violent rhetoric directed at Muslims and Palestinians.
CAIR’s designation states in part: “For years, [Rep. Fine] has invoked Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian stereotypes and incited violence against Muslims and Palestinians at home and abroad without impunity…
“In May 2025, Fine suggested on national television that the United States should use nuclear weapons against Gaza, invoking the atomic bombings of Japan as a model for dealing with Palestinians. When asked to explain this genocidal rhetoric, he doubled down with a racist and dehumanizing response, claiming that half of Gaza’s population is ‘married to their cousins’ and has ‘mental defects,’ and that ‘you’ve got to have a mental defect to interpret the comment that way.’
“Despite the extremity of these remarks, Fine has not yet been censured or publicly criticized by his own party’s leadership.”
Last week, CAIR called on Congress to censure Rep. Fine after he made yet another racist attack on Palestinians, saying they have “mental defects.”
Last month, CAIR sent a letter to every member of the U.S. House of Representatives and more than 1,600 congressional staffers, urging them to condemn Rep. Fine’s dangerously anti-Muslim, anti-American, and anti-Palestinian rhetoric.
Fine’s broader record includes:
Saying “Gaza must be destroyed.”
Calling a fellow member of Congress a “Muslim terrorist.”
Telling Palestinians to “eat rockets” and posting hashtags like #BombsAway and #StarveAway.
Mocking a dead Palestinian child with “Quite well, actually! Thanks for the pic!”
Telling a Muslim constituent to “go blow yourself up.”
Referring to a Palestinian keffiyeh as a “terrorist rag” during a public hearing.
CAIR continues to call on:
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to immediately and publicly condemn Fine’s genocidal remarks, censure him, and remove him from his congressional committee assignments.
All members of Congress to refuse to work with Fine and confront his extremism whenever it appears.
The House to formally censure Fine and remove him from all committee and caucus assignments.
Washington, D.C., based CAIR said it will continue working with allied organizations, civil rights leaders, and elected officials to hold Rep. Fine accountable and ensure that no member of Congress is allowed to promote violence without facing consequences.

Bangladesh Supreme Court Scraps Parliament Power To Remove Judges
Jun 11, 2025
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court in the full text of a verdict has observed that the sixteenth amendment to the constitution, which had empowered the parliament to remove the SC judges for incapacity or misbehavior, is a colourable legislation and is violative of separation of powers among the three organs of the state -- executive, legislature and judiciary, and independence of the judiciary.
In the 50-page full text of judgement, which was uploaded on the SC website on June 3, a six-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed unanimously restored the constitutional provision (Article 96) of the Supreme Judicial Council to deal with the allegations against the SC judges over incapacity or misconduct.
"What was the essence of the sixteenth amendment case? In my view, it was an attempt by a despotic and fascist government to wrest the power of removal of judges from the Supreme Judicial Council and vest them in the hands of the Parliament, thereby putting the independence of Judges at stake."
"In other words, if a Judge, in the course of discharging his function, would incur the wrath or disfavour of the government, he/she could be removed from office by the stroke of a pen by the members of the parliament. Can such a situation be allowed or accepted in a democratic society? The answer, in my considered view, as has also been stated by my learned brothers in their respective judgments, is an emphatic 'No'," said Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, a judge of the Appellate Division bench, in the full text of verdict.
In the full text of the judgment, the apex court upheld its earlier verdict that reformulated the 39-point code of conduct for its judges with a view to avoiding any misgiving and confusion under article 96 of the constitution.
On October 20 last year, the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, has delivered the verdict after disposing of a review petition filed by the previous government against a 2017 SC verdict that scrapped the 16th amendment to the constitution that empowered parliament to deal with the allegations against SC judges.
Before the 16th amendment was made in 2014, the Supreme Judicial Council -- comprising the chief justice and two other senior judges of the Appellate Division -- had the authority to probe such allegations and make necessary recommendations to the president for action.
But when the High Court, in May 2016, scrapped the 16th amendment, parliament lost its power to deal with the matter. However, the council could not be made functional as the then government challenged the HC verdict at the Appellate Division.
Even after the Appellate Division upheld the HC verdict in July 2017, paving the way for making the council functional, the government filed a review petition, which created the legal stalemate.
In the full text of judgement, the Appellate Division observed that "The Civil Review Petition is disposed of unanimously with the observations. Resultantly, Article 96 of the Constitution stands restored in its entirety without any ambiguity whatsoever."
Justice Md Ashraful Kamal was appointed as an additional judge of the HC on December 12, 2010, for two years and his service was confirmed on December 10, 2012, during the regime of Sheikh Hasina-led government.

Polls in April: BNP ‘disappointed’, Jamaat, NCP ‘satisfied’
Jun 11, 2025
Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus' announcement on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha that the next national election will be held in the first half of April 2026 has triggered mixed reactions from political parties.
BNP and like-minded parties described the announcement as "disappointing," while Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP) broadly welcomed it.
In a televised address on Friday, Prof Yunus explained that the interim government assumed office following the August 2024 fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government, based on three main mandates -- reforms, justice, and elections.
"I believe by next Eid-ul-Fitr, we will reach an acceptable point on reform and justice. Especially, visible progress will be seen in the trial of crimes against humanity, which is the government's collective responsibility to the martyrs of the July mass uprising," he said.
"After reviewing ongoing reforms in justice, governance, and election processes, I announce that the next national elections will be held on a date in the first half of April 2026," Yunus announced.
He added that the government aims to organise "the freest, fairest, most competitive, and most acceptable election in history," and discussions have been held with all parties in this regard.
The announcement came as BNP and allied parties had hardened their stance on elections by December this year.
On May 28, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman said the next general election must be held by December and called on party activists and leaders to prepare to ensure that.
Yunus had previously indicated that elections would occur between December 2025 and June 2026, depending on reform progress.
NCP, composed of July uprising leaders, supports holding elections only after reforms are complete.
Jamaat-e-Islami initially aligned with NCP's position but later suggested elections could take place in February before Ramadan. Last week, Jamaat leaders indicated elections might happen between December and April.
On May 21, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman said that elections should be held by December, stating, "Bangladesh needs political stability, which can only come through an elected government, not unelected decision-makers."
MIXED REACTIONS FROM POLITICAL PARTIES
Following the announcement, BNP convened an emergency standing committee meeting and issued a press release reiterating its demand for elections by December. They cited Ramadan, public exams at secondary and higher secondary levels, and weather concerns as reasons.
BNP also warned that the combination of weather and campaigning during Ramadan might lead to the postponement of the polls.
On Saturday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who was returning from Thailand after receiving treatment, stated that the announcement not only "disappointed" his party but also the whole nation.
In contrast, Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman welcomed the tentative election date, expressing hope that the government will ensure a free, fair, neutral, and acceptable election within the declared timeframe.
He said the nation has a strong desire for reform, justice, and elections, and that through the formation and implementation of the "July Charter", Bangladesh can return to a proper democratic path.
NCP, in its reaction, said it would not oppose elections by April next year if key reforms and constitutional changes are completed before that.
"We believe fulfilling the July Declaration and July Charter and announcing a clear election timeline will meet national expectations," said Akhter Hossen, NCP member secretary. He added that reforms and justice must be visible before elections and advocated for a Constituent Assembly election to implement a new constitution.
LEFTIST PARTIES EXPRESS DISSATISFACTION
Communist Party of Bangladesh General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince called the election timeline ignores public opinion.
"Most political parties, and ordinary citizens we've spoken with, want the election to be held within this year by December. We want the same," Prince said.
Revolutionary Workers Party General Secretary Saiful Huq said the chief adviser ignored "the consensus for December elections", warning that an April election would "frustrate many".
Questioned April's suitability, he said January to mid-February would have been a better choice for arranging polls.
He warned that the decision could deepen the political crisis and widen the gap between the government and political parties.
Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal's General Secretary Bazlur Rashid Firoz also questioned the timing of the polls and argued that key reforms and judicial progress could be completed by December.
He also said polls in April may disrupt SSC exams, which are scheduled for April.

Free Education App “Darakht-e-Danesh” launches on App Store
By Fidel Rahmati
June 11, 2025
The new Darakht-e-Danesh app offers free, offline educational resources in multiple languages for learners in Afghanistan and beyond.
A newly launched free application, “Darakht-e Danesh”, is now available on the App Store, offering users broad and easy access to educational resources. The app aims to empower students, teachers, and lifelong learners across Afghanistan and beyond.
This educational platform provides over 8,000 resources in 127 different subjects, making it one of the most comprehensive multilingual learning apps in the region. The content is available in Persian (Dari), Pashto, English, Uzbeki, Nuristani, Shughni, Pashai, Sawi, Munji, and Balochi—catering to Afghanistan’s diverse linguistic communities.
The app includes a wide range of books, guides, articles, and educational materials. It is specifically designed to support both classroom teaching and self-guided learning, helping improve literacy and general knowledge throughout the country.
One of the standout features of “Darakht-e Danesh” is its offline accessibility. Once users download the content, they can access the materials without an internet connection—addressing a major challenge in regions with limited connectivity.
Users can search for the application under the title “Darakht-e Danesh Library” on the App Store. The user-friendly interface and multilingual structure make it an inclusive and adaptable tool for learners from all walks of life.
Since the Taliban regained control in 2021, girls in Afghanistan have been banned from attending school beyond the sixth grade. This restriction has cut off millions from basic education, drawing widespread concern from Afghan families and the global community.
International bodies like the UN and Human Rights Watch have condemned the ban, calling it a violation of human rights. Experts warn it will harm Afghanistan’s future by limiting opportunities for half the population and weakening national development.
According to the Darakht-e Danesh Library Project, originally initiated by the Canadian NGO Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan), the platform was built to ensure equal access to educational opportunities in marginalized communities.
In a country where access to quality education has often been disrupted by conflict and displacement, initiatives like “Darakht-e Danesh” represent a critical step toward rebuilding learning systems and promoting equity in education.

Germany granted citizenship to 10,000 Afghans last year
By Fidel Rahmati
June 11, 2025
Germany granted citizenship to 10,000 Afghans last year, marking a significant milestone in Afghan migration and integration within German society.
Germany granted citizenship to nearly 292,000 people in 2024, marking a historic 46% increase compared to the previous year, according to data released by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This surge in naturalizations is the highest ever recorded in the country.
On June 10, Destatis reported that 291,955 individuals were granted German citizenship. Among them, more than 83,000 were Syrians and at least 10,000 were Afghans. Many Syrians who fled their country during the 2015–2016 war have now met the eligibility criteria for naturalization.
Syrians accounted for 28% of all new citizens, followed by Turkish nationals (8%), Iraqis (5%), Russians (4%), and Afghans (3%). The number of Afghans gaining citizenship—just over 10,000—reflects both long-term migration patterns and recent humanitarian pathways.
The data also highlighted the sharpest increase among Russian nationals. Their naturalizations surged from 1,995 in 2023 to 12,980 in 2024. Meanwhile, over 22,500 Turkish citizens acquired German nationality—more than double the previous year’s figure.
Experts attribute this rise to recent changes in Germany’s citizenship law. In June 2023, the government reduced the minimum residency requirement from eight years to five, and in special cases, to as few as three years. The law also allows for dual citizenship, enabling many long-term residents—especially from Turkey—to retain their original nationality.
However, Germany’s current governing coalition, which includes both conservative and Social Democratic parties, is considering rolling back some of these reforms. Proposals are being discussed to reinstate the minimum five-year waiting period for all applicants.
Conservative lawmakers argue that citizenship should only be granted after full social integration, warning that shorter waiting times may increase migration pressure and fuel public dissatisfaction. As the debate continues, Germany’s approach to immigration and integration remains a central issue in national policy discourse.

Pakistan blocks 11 Afghanistan trucks at Wagah border
By Fidel Rahmati
June 10, 2025
Pakistan has blocked 11 Afghanistan trucks at the Wagah border due to documentation issues, causing delays and losses, says Indian media.
According to Indian media reports, Pakistan has blocked the passage of 11 Afghanistan’s cargo trucks carrying semi-perishable goods at the Wagah border crossing. These trucks have reportedly been stranded since April 23 due to administrative issues and their absence from the official clearance list.
The Indian Express reported on Tuesday (June 10) that Afghan traders are actively coordinating with Taliban officials and the Pakistani government to resolve documentation issues and facilitate the release of the trucks. The situation remains sensitive amid broader political tensions in the region.
The blockage follows increased tension between India and Pakistan, particularly after a deadly incident in Pahalgam, Kashmir. In the aftermath, several Afghan and Indian trucks were delayed at the Attari-Wagah border. While over 150 trucks have since crossed, 11 Afghan trucks remain stuck on the Pakistani side.
Mukesh Sidwani, one of the involved traders, stated that most trucks were either allowed to cross or returned, but the remaining 11 have not yet received clearance. He added that these trucks are not listed in Pakistan’s official registry of halted vehicles, which has further complicated efforts to secure their passage.
Pakistani authorities are reportedly urging the Taliban government to submit the required documents for the stalled trucks. Without official clearance, the goods—many of which are perishable—remain in limbo, placing Afghanistan businesses at risk of heavy financial losses.
Sources familiar with the issue confirm that the prolonged delay is causing significant damage to Afghan traders due to spoilage and contract breaches. Some traders have warned that unless resolved quickly, trust in overland trade routes through Pakistan may diminish.
The standoff at Wagah is reflective of broader regional challenges, where political instability directly affects economic lifelines. As Afghanistan relies heavily on land trade via Pakistan, such disruptions highlight the need for robust cross-border trade protocols and clear diplomatic channels.

Prophet’s Mosque prepares prayer areas, courtyards to receive post-Hajj worshippers in Madinah
June 10, 2025
Madinah: The Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, located in the Hijaz region of Saudi Arabia, has improved and updated its crowd management in preparation to receive worshippers during the post-Hajj period.
The General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, which oversees the mosques in Makkah and Madinah, announced on Tuesday that the Prophet’s Mosque and its courtyards and praying areas had been prepared to offer a safe and organized environment for worshippers.
The entry and exit points of the mosque were assessed to minimize congestion and overcrowding, the Saudi Press Agency reported. Signs were placed to direct worshippers to the prayer areas and to prohibit sitting or praying in the mosque’s corridors and courtyards, ensuring smooth foot traffic.
The authority said its goal is to allow worshippers to perform their rituals in a calm, orderly, and reverent atmosphere, according to the SPA.
Over 1.4 million pilgrims concluded this week the Hajj, a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage that able Muslims must undertake, and they visited various holy sites in Makkah and Madinah, including the Prophet’s Mosque.

June 10, 2025
RIYADH: Over 94,000 people participated in organizing the Hajj season in Saudi Arabia, where 1.4 million Muslims performed the pilgrimage in early June.
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah reported on Tuesday that individuals served pilgrims in various fields and organizational locations in Makkah and Madinah as part of the ministry’s efforts in running the Hajj.
The ministry said its Compliance Center conducted over 70,000 field inspections during Hajj, examining pilgrim accommodation, camps, central kitchens, and operational facilities.
The Nusuk Care initiative offered over 845,000 direct services, including health, psychological, and language support, it added. Over 3,000 volunteers supported government efforts during the Hajj season, serving pilgrims at over 107 contact points and distributed across six tracks.
The ministry said these field indicators demonstrate the level of planning, precision, and investment in human resources and technology, which is aligned with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

2 journeys, 1 destination: Hajj through the eyes of the young, elderly
HASHIM NADEEM
June 10, 2025
MINA: Mina was alive in recent days with the footsteps of millions, yet every pilgrim’s pace told a different story, from those who waited decades for the moment to those capturing it in real time.
In the tent city of Mina, two pilgrims rested side by side: one catching his breath, the other capturing a selfie. One scrolled through prayer times on his smartphone; the other adjusted the strap of his orthopedic sandal. One leaned on a walking stick; the other scrolled through digital navigation. But both wore the same white ihram and followed the same steps.
This was the paradox of Hajj 2025, where generations decades apart walked the same sacred path in remarkably different ways. They shared no common language except the unspoken one of faith.
For 73-year-old Moinuddin from Pakistan, the pilgrimage was a long-awaited dream, one that had been etched over decades of supplication.
He said: “I have the desire and I ask help from God to give me courage and power to perform this Hajj for the Isaal-e-Sawaab (gifting of spiritual rewards) for my mother.”
He paused often, not just for rest, but to reflect — at Arafat, in Muzdalifah, and between the pillars of Jamarat.
Just a few rows behind him, Mustafa, 22, from Denmark, documented his Hajj in quick snaps and video clips. He brought a camera with him to capture the moments for his friends and family back home. He said: “Coming here as a young person, I am grateful. I see a lot of older people and it’s difficult; you have to work a lot.”
While Mustafa relied on digital navigation to track his group, Moinuddin leaned gently on a young companion’s shoulder. Both pilgrims endured the same sun, the same crowds, and the same powerful rituals, but the lens through which they experienced Hajj was shaped by their stage in life.
As the majority of pilgrims were elderly, many arrived with wheelchairs, walkers, or full family support. Their presence was treated with reverence — volunteers readily offered water, fans, and silent prayers as they passed.
In contrast, the younger generation brought a different rhythm — one of documentation, discovery, digital devotion, QR codes at checkpoints, real-time language translation apps, and virtual guides to make this year’s Hajj more accessible than ever.
But tech aside, the younger pilgrims still found themselves drawn into moments of stillness.
What binds both ends of the age spectrum was the raw, shared surrender to something greater. In a space where nationality, status, and language dissolve, so too does age. You could be 18 or 81 — you still bow to the same qibla.
At Mina, where pebbles were cast in symbolic defiance of ego, one young man gently steadied an old man’s arm before throwing his own stones. A quiet exchange, but one that said everything.
As pilgrims circled the Kaaba one final time before departure, the generational divide faded further. Some walked swiftly, others were pushed gently in wheelchairs, but all completed the same Tawaf Al-Wadaa (farewell tawaf).
The journey in the end was not measured in steps or speed, but in surrender. And that, in the valley of Makkah, was a language every pilgrim spoke fluently.

'It's hateful for no reason' - locals condemn racist graffiti on potential mosque
Chloe Atkinson
11 June 2025
Racist graffiti has appeared at the site of a potential mosque in Gwent today - and locals have quick to roundly condemned it.
Plans to turn a former Gwent library into a mosque have been met with support when the Argus went to canvas opinion, but some, including local Senedd member Laura-Anne Jones, have questioned the plan.
The old Abergavenny library on Baker Street has been unused since 2015 after the library was relocated to the Town Hall.
In May, Monmouthshire council agreed to grant a 30-year lease to the Monmouthshire Muslim Community Association who plan to use the building as a mosque.
This would be the county’s first mosque.

Written in Arabic the word ‘masjid’ meaning mosque appeared next to the word ‘no.’
Also graffitied were crosses symbolic of the Christian faith.
When the Argus spoke to locals in Abergavenny, they were upset and angered by the vandalism.

“I deplore the fact there’s a cross there as if it’s supporting this protest and I do hope there can be some statement from the local Christian churches, to say we stand alongside the Muslims and support them in having a regular prayer place.”

“I think we should be embracing multiculturalism. That’s what it’s about isn’t it?”
Catherine commented why some people may be against the mosque.
“In this world people have got different opinions and some people are more right wing than left wing.”

“I think there’s a lot of sentiment in the country a lot of it aimed by Muslims and I think a lot of scepticism comes from that.”
65-year-old Sue Holden shared her thoughts on a new mosque in Abergavenny. (Image: NQ) 65-year-old Sue Holden said: “It’s good the building isn’t standing derelict and that it’s in use and there is a need for a Mosque.”

“So, we don’t have to worry about that being an issue in my opinion.”
The plan was given approval by Monmouthshire Council last week but the decision was called in, meaning further discussion will take place. A meeting is due to take place on Wednesday, June 11, to discuss the plans.

UK sanctions far-right Israeli ministers for 'inciting violence' against Palestinians
11 June 2025
The UK has sanctioned two far-right Israeli ministers over "repeated incitements of violence against Palestinian communities" in the occupied West Bank.
Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich will both be banned from entering the UK and will have any assets in the UK frozen as part of the measures announced by the foreign secretary.
It is part of a joint move with Australia, Norway, Canada and New Zealand announced on Tuesday.
In response, Israel said: "It is outrageous that elected representatives and members of the government are subjected to these kind of measures."
David Lammy said Finance Minister Smotrich and National Security Minister Ben-Gvir had "incited extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights".
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the move, writing on X: "These sanctions do not advance US-led efforts to achieve a ceasefire, bring all hostages home, and end the war".
He urged the nations to reverse the sanctions, adding that the US "stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel."
The US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, joined Rubio's condemnation, describing the move as a "shocking decision" in an interview with the BBC.
Smotrich and Ben-Gvir have also been criticised for their stance on the war in Gaza. Both ministers oppose allowing aid into the Strip and have called for Palestinians there to be resettled outside the territory.
The Foreign Office said: "As Palestinian communities in the West Bank continue to suffer from severe acts of violence by extremist Israeli settlers which also undermine a future Palestinian state, the UK has joined Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Norway in stepping up the international response."
After the announcement, Lammy said: "These actions are not acceptable. This is why we have taken action now – to hold those responsible to account.
"We will strive to achieve an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the immediate release of the remaining hostages by Hamas which can have no future role in the governance of Gaza, a surge in aid and a path to a two-state solution."
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said the cabinet would meet next week to respond to what he called an "unacceptable decision".
The Foreign Office added that the five nations are "clear that the rising violence and intimidation by Israeli settlers against Palestinian communities in the West Bank must stop".
In a statement it said the sanctions against the ministers "cannot be seen in isolation from events in Gaza where Israel must uphold International Humanitarian Law".
The ministers lead ultra-nationalist parties in the governing coalition, which holds an eight-seat majority in parliament. The support of Ben-Gvir's Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) party, which holds six seats, and Smotrich's Religious Zionism party, which holds seven seats, is crucial to the government's survival.
Speaking at the inauguration of a new settlement in the West Bank, Smotrich said he felt "contempt" towards the UK's move.
"Britain has already tried once to prevent us from settling the cradle of our homeland, and we cannot do it again," he said. "We are determined, God willing, to continue building."
The minister was alluding to the period when Britain governed Palestine and imposed restrictions on Jewish immigration, most significantly from the late 1930s to late 1940s.
Israel has built about 160 settlements housing some 700,000 Jews since it occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war.
The vast majority of the international community considers the settlements illegal under international law - a position supported by an advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) last year - although Israel disputes this.
Speaking in the Commons on Tuesday, Foreign Office Minister Hamish Falconer said that 2024 had seen the "worst settler violence" in the West Bank in the past two decades and this year was "on track to be just as violent".
Commenting on the sanctions imposed on the two ministers, Falconer said they were "responsible for inciting settler violence" in the West Bank which has "led to the deaths of Palestinian civilians and the displacement of whole towns and villages".
Falconer said Smotrich and Ben-Gvir had continued their "appalling" rhetoric despite warnings from the UK government, and so action was taken.
The possibility of sanctioning these two ministers has long been in the pipeline.
In October, Lord Cameron said he had planned to sanction the pair, when he was foreign secretary from 2023-24, as a way of putting pressure on Israel.
The UK's decision reflects growing popular and parliamentary pressure to take further action against the Israeli government for its operations both in Gaza and the West Bank.
It also comes after a steady escalation of pressure by the UK and other allies.
Last month the leaders of Britain, France and Canada issued a joint statement saying that Israel was at risk of breaking international law. The UK also broke off trade talks with Israel.
In the Commons last month, Lammy described remarks by Smotrich about "cleansing" Gaza of Palestinians as "monstrous" and "dangerous" extremism.
Timeline of UK-Israel tensions
19 May: UK, France and Canada denounce expanded Israeli offensive on Gaza and continuing blockade, warn of "concrete" response; Israeli PM calls move "huge prize" for Hamas
20 May: UK suspends free trade talks with Israel, sanctions settlers, and summons Israel's ambassador; Israel foreign ministry calls move "regrettable"
22 May: Israeli PM links criticism of Israel by leaders of UK, France and Canada to deadly shooting of two Israeli embassy staff in Washington DC on 21 May
10 June: UK sanctions Israeli ministers Smotrich and Ben-Gvir for advocating forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza; Israel's foreign minister calls move "outrageous"
Conservative shadow home secretary Dame Priti Patel did not directly comment on the sanctions, but said: "We have been clear that the British government must leverage its influence at every opportunity to ensure the remaining hostages [held by Hamas] are released, that aid continues to reach those who need it, and a sustainable end to the conflict is achieved."
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey welcomed the sanctions, but said it was "disappointing" that the Conservative government and Labour "took so long to act".
It is 20 months since Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the unprecedented Hamas-led cross-border attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.
At least 54,927 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.

Azerbaijan holds anti-Islamophobia conference while religious activists face persecution
10.06.2025
Although the international conference held in Baku sought to highlight Azerbaijan’s active role in combating Islamophobia globally, the country’s internal situation and statements by religious activist Alemdar Bunyatov reveal ongoing systemic pressure and repression against the Shia community.
The international conference, titled “Islamophobia in Focus: Exposing Bias, Demolishing Stigmas”, held in Baku in May this year, presented Azerbaijan as a global leader in the fight against Islamophobia. The participation of representatives from international organisations such as the UN, OIC, UNESCO, and IF20 helped frame the country as a model of religious tolerance.
However, at the same time, a Shia activist from Azerbaijan who has been granted asylum in Europe claims that Azerbaijani authorities are pursuing Islamophobic and sectarian policies against their own citizens.
According to blogger Alemdar Bunyatov, a representative of the Muslim Unity Movement in Europe, the state of religious freedom and the treatment of the Shia community in Azerbaijan is deeply contradictory.
“We oppose Allahshukur Pashazade and the court mullahs surrounding him”
Alemdar Bunyatov claims that Islamophobia in Azerbaijan is not a Western import but a domestic political phenomenon. According to him, while Christian and Jewish religious communities are provided with favourable conditions, the Shi’a community faces both the non-recognition of religious holidays and ideological persecution:
“The authorities are indifferent to the Shi’a community, which observes Ramadan and Qurban according to its own calendar. We follow the teachings of mujtahids such as Sistani and Khamenei, but we are forced to submit to the official mufti, Allahshukur Pashazade.”
Bunyatov regards this treatment as “an infringement on freedom of religion and a form of systematic Islamophobia.”He claims that around 300 religious activists in Azerbaijan are currently imprisoned for these reasons.
His criticism targets not only the religious system, but also the political structures tied to it. He argues that the Caucasus Muslim Board does not represent the will of the Shi’a community but acts on behalf of political power:
“We oppose Allahshukur Pashazade and the court mullahs surrounding him. They praise the oppressor, stay silent in the face of injustice, and expect us to do the same. But our understanding of Shi’ism teaches us to resist evil.”
Bunyatov stresses that Shi’a activists’ discontent goes beyond religion — it is also a struggle for political freedom and democratic governance. In his view, the reaction of the Shi’a community should not be interpreted as “radicalism”, but rather as a protest against injustice.
Stigmatisation and accusations of Iranian ties
Alemdar Bunyatov also criticises the fact that Shi’a activists in Azerbaijan are often accused of being “Iranian agents”:
“We have never engaged in Iranian propaganda. It’s just that our religious leaders are based there. The mujtahid we follow could just as well be in Pakistan. This is our faith, and it serves no country.”
According to him, such accusations aim both to discredit the Shi’a community in the public eye and to silence it. This is another manifestation of Islamophobia, albeit in a political and ideological form.
Hollow nature of official conference
Alemdar Bunyatov poses a pointed question:
“If the Azerbaijani government’s policy is itself Islamophobic, how sincere can such international conferences really be?”
This question highlights not only domestic policy but also the stark contrast between Azerbaijan’s international image and the domestic reality – between “propaganda and fact.”

Constitution: Group Demands Removal of Sharia References, Says Nigeria Remains Secular State
June 11, 2025
A human rights organization – End Sharia Now Campaign – has demanded removal of Sharia clauses from the Nigerian constitution, claiming the country is a secular state and cannot operate under a dual legal system.
Convener of #End Sharia Now Campaign, Benson Sunday, said the abolition of court that gives legal authority to any religious belief over citizens, as well as the reaffirmation and enforcement of Section 10 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which bans any form of religious governance at federal or state levels must be implemented.
In a statement made available to journalists yesterday, he said that 12 northern states have established full functioning Sharia law systems including religious police (Hisbah), enforcement of codes on dress, alcohol consumption, gender relations, and even religious conversion, while noting that it is not just a northern issue, but a Nigerian challenge.
He added that despite the constitutional promise of religious neutrality, the current Constitution is heavily infused with Islamic elements – terms, institutions, and legal provisions that contradict the secular national identity as promised.
He therefore called on civil societies, religious leaders, political representatives, student groups, traditional rulers, and every freedom-loving Nigerian to join in the campaign demanding for a constitution that reflects a country that is modern, democratic, united, and secular.
The statement read: “Nigeria is a proud, diverse nation of over 200 million people – people of different faiths, ethnicities, cultures, and philosophies.
“Our investigation and analysis of the Nigerian Constitution reveal the following shocking statistics: The term Sharia appears 73 times, Islam appears 28 times, Grand Kadi appears 54 times, Muslim(s) appears 10 times. These terms are not symbolic or historical references.
“The immediate removal of all Islamic /Sharia references and institutions from the 1999 Constitution, including: Sections 260–264 (Sharia Court of Appeal – Federal), Sections 275–279 (Sharia Court of Appeal – State), provisions establishing the office of the Grand Kadi and Sharia judicial authority.
“These are not benign inclusions. They are legal instruments that have enabled 12 northern states to establish fully functioning Sharia law systems. In these states, religious police (Hisbah) enforce Islamic codes on dress, alcohol consumption, gender relations, and even religious conversion.
“In many cases, non-Muslims and even liberal Muslims are being tried and punished under religious laws they do not subscribe to. This is unconstitutional, unjust, and deeply dangerous to our unity.
“What Happens in a dual legal system? When a country operates two conflicting legal systems – secular law for some and religious law for others? It fosters division along religious lines, injustice for minorities, discriminatory laws based on faith, suppression of freedom of belief and thought, legal persecution of converts and women.”

Ex-Governors to Nigerians: pray for peaceful co-existence
by Frank Ikpefan, Abuja
June 10, 2025
The Former Governors Forum has called on Nigerians to use the Eid-el Kabir festival to embrace the principles of brotherliness, care for the needy, and the underprivileged in society.
In a statement by its Chairman and former Governor of Niger State, Dr Babangida Aliyu, the forum called on Nigerians to continue to pray for peaceful co-existence and a great future for our nation.
The statement said: “Forum of all former governors warmly felicitate with Muslims all over the country on the occasion of the celebration of Eid-el Kabir.
“The fundamentals of sacrifice to God and love for humanity that it embodies is one of the cardinal templates of practice for laying a foundation for sacrifice, national growth and unity in a nation like ours.
“The national celebration which cuts across all tribes in Nigeria, where Muslim and non-Muslims are, reminds us of our oneness and togetherness as a nation. It is therefore an opportunity for us to appreciate and celebrate with one another, as a people bound in love and togetherness.
“We equally use this opportunity to call on all Nigerians to continue to embrace principles of brotherliness, care for the needy, and the underprivileged that it equally symbolises, and continue to pray for peaceful co-existence and a great future for our nation.
“May our sacrifices be accepted by Allah. May the blessings of Ed-el-Kabir fill the heart of Nigerians with peace , joy and prosperity.”

Some People Are Dancing While The Ship Is Sinking – Obi Warns Of Impending Doom
June 10, 2025
By Justina Otio
The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has described the country as a crime scene that needs urgent fixing.
Speaking during the presentation of a book, ‘Obi: The Political Change Agent’, in Abuja on Tuesday, the former Anambra governor condemned the high level of insecurity and hardship across Nigeria.
Obi lamented that although Nigeria is not officially at war, many citizens live like refugees, both inside and outside the country.
He urged Nigerians to actively work hard to detach from what he called the crime scene of a country.
He said, “Today in Nigeria, we’re not officially at war, yet Nigerians are living in IDP camps in their own country. Nigerians are refugees in Chad, in Cameroon. And the only reason is because we don’t have a government that cares for them.
“Some people are dancing while the ship is sinking. When it finally goes down, it will consume everyone rich or poor. I’ve seen this before in places like Beirut and Afghanistan. Crisis does not discriminate.”
He further criticized the nation’s priorities, pointing out that while government buildings are being renovated and parties thrown, women continue to die during childbirth and millions of children remain out of school.
“We use public resources to paint offices and build mansions, while women die trying to give birth. According to a recent report, one woman dies every seven minutes in Nigeria during childbirth. That’s what we want to dismantle,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor emphasized that many of Nigeria’s problems stem from a lack of leadership and value creation.
“Our leaders in government and business are producing poverty. When people hoard money without creating value, they are fueling poverty. A functional economy must be built on the exchange of real value,” he added.
On currency devaluation, Obi supported the idea but stressed the need to eliminate corruption first.
He said, “Yes, I support removing fuel subsidy, but only after removing the criminality in the system. If we build confidence in the market and clean up corruption, the naira will stabilize. It’s happening in Ghana and Angola, why not here?”

Ignore Bystanders, Focus On Delivering Results – Tinubu Tells Wike
June 10, 2025
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
President Bola Tinubu has advised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to remain focused on his developmental agenda and not be distracted by “busybodies” and critics.
Tinubu gave the charge on Tuesday during the commissioning of the rehabilitated International Conference Centre, Abuja, which has now been renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in his honour.
Naija News reports that the President, in his advice to Wike, said, “I am glad, Nyesom Wike, you are reflecting that. Don’t pay attention to the busybodies and the bystanders, whatever they say, continue with your good work. You are a transformational leader. You have the vision, foresight and determination to succeed.”
President Tinubu, who just returned to Abuja from a two-week break in Lagos, said the refurbished centre represents the renewed commitment of his administration to quality service delivery and national transformation.
“This is part of our determined efforts to change the way we do things to reflect us as people of quality, people of character, people of determination, people of great spirits. That’s what we are,” he noted.
The President stated that his administration was aware that modern infrastructure remains the backbone of economic prosperity.
He said, “Through the Renewed Hope Agenda, we are determined to renew the infrastructural and other key sectors of this country (including) transportation, healthcare, education, energy and urban development.
“Because we understand that modern infrastructure is the backbone of a thriving economy in an inclusive and progressive society.”
Tinubu also said the rehabilitated conference centre was a reflection of Nigeria’s commitment to “regional diplomacy, continental trade discussions, global partnerships, and many more thoughtful, well-outlined goals that reflect our Nigerian first.”
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Finance Minister, Wale Edun, Attorney-General, Lateef Fagbemi, and other top government officials.

Taxing the richest 10pc to redistribute wealth will make govt ‘very unpopular’, says Fuziah Salleh
11 Jun 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — The government will become “very unpopular” if it raised taxes on the top 10 per cent of the richest and redistributed the wealth to the rest of the population, Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Fuziah Salleh said.
While the PKR secretary-general admitted that distribution of wealth should be more equitable and efficient, she said the government has to tread carefully in doing so.
“Even at the moment when we talk about targeted petrol subsidies that may exclude the T20, we already hear some noises.
“Even the two per cent dividend (tax) met with some resistance,” Fuziah said, referring to the introduction of dividend tax on annual dividend income exceeding RM100,000 under the 2025 Budget.
Fuziah was responding to a question on the government’s strategy to tackle the widening wealth disparity gap between the T20 and the rest of the country at the BBC World Questions debate yesterday.
Citing that the richest 10 per cent in Malaysia take home 40 per cent of income, presenter Jonny Dymond asked Fuziah whether the government considered a tax hike on them as part of a wealth redistribution exercise.
Meawhile, Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal pointed out that the government has not clearly defined the T15 — a new classification to represent the top 15 per cent of Malaysian households that was introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the 2025 Budget.
Wan also stressed the need to improve and enhance educational and digital resources in rural constituencies like his to be on par with urban constituencies in Kuala Lumpur.
On a related development, Fuziah said her ministry is currently studying the possible impacts of US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Malaysian goods entering the country.
Malaysia currently faces a 24 per cent tariff but negotiations are ongoing. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz reportedly said that Malaysia seeks to lower the current rate to the 10 per cent baseline tariff that applies to all US trading partners.
Fuziah admitted that loss of jobs was imminent if Malaysia’s trade ties with the US — its second-largest trading partner — is fractured by high tariffs.
The government, she said, is exploring new markets to mitigate the US tariff impacts, should it come to effect in July 2025.
Meanwhile, Tricia Yeoh, an associate professor of practice at the University of Nottingham Malaysia’s School of Politics and International Relations, called on Malaysia to uphold its strategic neutrality approach amid the escalating trade war between US and China.
Stressing that the US is a larger export market for Malaysia than China, Yeoh said Malaysia should leverage on the significant flow of foreign direct investments from Malaysia in the ongoing negotiations.

Israel cancels waiver allowing Israeli and Palestinian banks to work together
June 10, 2025
JERUSALEM: Israel canceled a waiver on Tuesday that had allowed Israeli banks to work with Palestinian ones, threatening to paralyze Palestinian financial institutions, Israel’s finance ministry said in a statement.
“Against the backdrop of the Palestinian Authority’s delegitimization campaign against the State of Israel internationally, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has instructed Accountant General CPA Yahli Rotenberg to cancel the indemnity provided to correspondent banks dealing with banks operating in Palestinian Authority territories,” the ministry said.
Smotrich had threatened in May 2024 to cut the vital connection between Israel and Palestinian banks in the occupied West Bank in retaliation for the recognition of the State of Palestine by three European countries.
The Palestinian financial and banking system is dependent on the regular renewal of the Israeli waiver.
It protects Israeli banks from potential legal action relating to transactions with their Palestinian counterparts, for instance in relation to financing terror.
In July, G7 countries urged Israel to “take necessary action” to ensure the continuity of Palestinian financial systems.
It came after US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that “to cut Palestinian banks from Israeli counterparts would create a humanitarian crisis.”
The overwhelming majority of exchanges in the West Bank are in shekels, Israel’s national currency, because the Palestinian Authority does not have a central bank that would allow it to print its own currency.

Israel’s Netanyahu says significant progress made in talks to release hostages
June 10, 2025
JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that there had been “significant progress” in efforts to secure the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza, but that it was “too soon” to raise hopes that a deal would be reached.
Despite efforts by the United States, Egypt and Qatar to restore a ceasefire in Gaza, neither Israel nor Hamas has shown willingness to back down on core demands, with each side blaming the other for the failure to reach a deal.
Netanyahu, who has come under pressure from within his right-wing coalition to continue the war and block humanitarian aid from entering Gaza, said in a video statement shared by his office that there had been progress, without providing details.
A source familiar with the negotiations said that Washington had been giving Hamas more assurances, in the form of steps that would lead to an end to the war, but said it was US officials who were optimistic, not Israeli ones. The source said there was pressure from Washington to have a deal done as soon as possible.
“There is a deal on the table. Hamas must stop acting recklessly and accept it,” a State Department official said when asked whether the US agreed with Netanyahu’s statement on the progress in talks.
“President Trump has made clear the consequences Hamas will face if it continues to hold the hostages, including the bodies of two Americans,” the official added, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Two Hamas sources told Reuters they had no knowledge of any new ceasefire offers.

Two Palestinians killed in Nablus assault
June 10, 2025
NABLUS: Israel launched a large-scale military operation on Tuesday in the old city of Nablus in the occupied West Bank, AFP journalists reported, with the army reporting injured troops and two Palestinians “eliminated.”
Dozens of military vehicles entered the city shortly after midnight, an AFP journalist reported, after a curfew had been announced over loudspeakers the day before.
Military operations are focused on the old city, a densely populated area bordering a large downtown square where young men and boys gathered to burn tires and throw stones at armored vehicles.
The Israeli army said that one soldier was “moderately injured” and three others “lightly injured” when two Palestinians attempted to steal a soldier’s weapon.
Troops opened fire and “eliminated” both Palestinians, the army said in a statement, using a term the military often uses when killing militants.
AFPTV footage showed Israeli soldiers standing in one of the old city’s narrow streets, next to the bodies of two civilians.
Neither Palestinian medics nor the Israeli army confirmed the two deaths.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said on Tuesday that three people were injured from bullet shrapnel, four from “physical assaults,” and dozens more from tear gas inhalation.
It added that many injuries had to be handled within the old city after its ambulances were blocked from entering.
Nablus is located in the northern West Bank, a Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967.
The territory’s north has been the target of a major Israeli military operation dubbed “Iron Wall” since Jan. 21.
On Tuesday, Israeli soldiers entered shops to search them and arrested several people for questioning, according to an AFP correspondent at the scene.
The correspondent added that Israeli flags were raised over the roofs of buildings in the Old City that had been turned into temporary bases for Israeli troops.
Violence has surged in the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war, triggered by the unprecedented Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
At least 938 Palestinians, including fighters but also many civilians, have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli soldiers or settlers, according to data from the Palestinian Authority.

Lebanon committed to renewing UNIFIL’s mandate, says PM
NAJIA HOUSSARI
June 10, 2025
BEIRUT: Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Tuesday reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to renewing the mandate of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon to support UN Resolution 1701 and maintain border security.
His statement followed an incident in which UNIFIL peacekeepers reported being confronted by rock-throwing individuals during a patrol in southern Lebanon, and described repeated attacks on its troops as “unacceptable.”
Salam condemned the attacks on UNIFIL, calling for the perpetrators to be apprehended and held accountable.
He warned that such actions threatened southern Lebanon’s stability and national interests, directing security agencies to refer the assailants to the judicial authorities.
The Lebanese Foreign Ministry echoed his sentiments, urging prosecution under Lebanese and international law while reaffirming its support for UNIFIL’s role in preserving peace and security.
UNIFIL urged the Lebanese government to “take all necessary measures to ensure that its forces perform their duties without any threat.”
The peacekeepers said they conducted their mission in coordination with the Lebanese army and based on UNIFIL’s mandate terms.
UNIFIL reiterated that freedom of movement was a fundamental condition for implementing its mandate, including the ability to operate independently and impartially, as outlined in UN Resolution 1701.
“Any restriction on this freedom, whether during operational activities with or without the Lebanese Armed Forces, is a violation of this resolution,” the statement added.
A supporter of the Iran-backed Hezbollah slapped a Finnish UNIFIL soldier on Tuesday. The incident occurred while a UNIFIL patrol was conducting search operations in an area between the towns of Deir Qanoun Al-Nahr and Al-Halloussiyah in the Tyre District, south of the Litani River.
The assault represents the most serious incident in two weeks of mounting tensions between UNIFIL peacekeepers and individuals Hezbollah describes as “locals.”
The assault, which was captured on video by the protesters themselves and shared across social media platforms, occurred during disputes over UNIFIL’s right to conduct inspections without Lebanese army escorts.
The controversy emerged as the UN prepared to review the renewal of the peacekeeping mission’s mandate.
The next renewal is expected to be considered by the UN Security Council in August as the current mandate, extended on Aug. 28, 2024, expires on Aug. 31.
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a key Hezbollah ally, characterized Tuesday’s incident differently, claiming it represented “a conspiracy against international forces designed to harm them, Lebanon, and the south.”
Tuesday's violence occurred after two separate patrol incidents. First, Hezbollah supporters blocked UNIFIL forces from entering private property in Bedias town without the Lebanese army, forcing the patrol’s withdrawal. Later on, another UNIFIL unit approached private land along the Al-Halloussiyah to Deir Qanoun Al-Nahr road, again without military escort.
Locals quickly mobilized, surrounding the international patrol and demanding its departure. Tensions peaked when one protester physically struck the UN soldier.
Lebanese army units later intervened to restore calm and immediately launched a hunt for the assailant.
Local witnesses expressed alarm at seeing Lebanese soldiers potentially confronting civilians.
UNIFIL later clarified that its “personnel used non-lethal measures in order to guarantee the protection of the patrol members and others.”
Lebanese Armed Forces quickly arrived at the site and the patrol resumed its duties when the situation was brought under control.
A witness said an argument ensued between locals and the Lebanese army after the latter began to hunt for the man who slapped the peacekeeper.
The protesters argued that UN forces should not operate independently of Lebanese military supervision, while UNIFIL maintained that its operations complied with established protocols.
Fares Souaid, the head of the Lady of the Mountain Gathering, warned that “the cost of beating a UNIFIL soldier will be very high.”
He added that Hezbollah members were “unaware of the harm the party is causing them.”
The incident was preceded by an Israeli drone striking shepherds in the border town of Shebaa. The Lebanese Ministry of Health later reported the strike had killed “the citizen Mohammed Kanaan and his son, Wael, a soldier in the army. His second son, Hadi, was injured.”
The number of Israeli violations since the ceasefire agreement of Nov. 27 has now reached 1,643 on land, 1,774 by air, and 88 by sea, a total of 3,505.
Hezbollah media reported that these had resulted in 172 deaths and 409 people suffering injuries.
The ceasefire agreement, which sought to end over a year of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, allows only Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers in the south of the country.

Jordan pledges continued support for Lebanon’s efforts to preserve security, stability, sovereignty
NAJIA HOUSSARI
June 10, 2025
BEIRUT: During talks in Amman on Tuesday with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, King Abdullah of Jordan reaffirmed his country’s “support to Lebanon in its efforts to preserve its security, stability, sovereignty and territorial unity.”
The two leaders also emphasized “the importance of preserving security and stability in Syria, which will help facilitate the voluntary and safe return of Syrian refugees” to their home country.
Aoun praised Jordan for the role it has played, under the leadership of King Abdullah, “in standing with Lebanon and its people, and providing support to the Lebanese army.”
He also highlighted the importance of “enhancing security and defense cooperation between both countries, particularly in the field of combating terrorism and smuggling.”
In a joint statement, King Abdullah and Aoun stressed “the need to immediately reinstate the ceasefire in Gaza, and ensure adequate humanitarian aid reaches all areas” of the territory. They rejected any plans to displace Palestinians, and urged Arab states and the wider international community to step up efforts to reach a just and comprehensive resolution to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, based on a two-state solution.
The king also warned of “the danger of the unprecedented escalations and violence targeting Palestinians in the West Bank, and Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.”
More broadly, the two leaders said it was important to maintaining coordination and consultation on all issues of mutual interest.

UN peacekeepers say troops attacked by individuals in south Lebanon
June 10, 2025
BEIRUT: United Nations peacekeepers said rock-throwing individuals confronted them during a patrol on Tuesday in south Lebanon, calling repeated targeting of their troops “unacceptable.”
The UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL), deployed since 1978 to separate Lebanon and Israel, sits on a five-member committee to supervise the ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah.
In a statement, UNIFIL said peacekeepers conducting “a planned patrol” coordinated with the Lebanese army were “confronted by a group of individuals in civilian clothing in the vicinity of Hallusiyat Al-Tahta, in southern Lebanon.”
“The group attempted to obstruct the patrol using aggressive means, including throwing stones at the peacekeepers,” the statement read, adding that “one peacekeeper was struck” but no injuries were reported.
The situation was defused when the Lebanese army intervened, allowing the peacekeeping force to continue its patrol.
“It is unacceptable that UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to be targeted,” the statement added.
UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti told AFP a Finnish soldier was slapped during the confrontation.
A witness, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, said an altercation ensued between locals and the Lebanese army, who were searching for the man who slapped the peacekeeper.
One man opposing the army was injured and hospitalized, the witness said.
In a statement, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said he “strongly condemns the repeated attacks” on UNIFIL forces and called for the attackers to be stopped and held accountable.
There have been several confrontations between people in south Lebanon, where Hezbollah holds sway, and UN peacekeepers in recent weeks.
Confrontations are typically defused by the Lebanese army and rarely escalate.
In December 2022, an Irish peacekeeper was killed in a shooting at a UN armored vehicle in the south. Hezbollah surrendered a man accused of the crime, but he was released around a year later.
The November ceasefire agreement, which sought to end over a year of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, states that only Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers may be deployed in the country’s south.
Israel is supposed to have fully withdrawn its troops from Lebanon according to the deal, but has remained in five positions it deems strategic and has repeatedly bombed the country.

Dozens of settlers storm al-Aqsa Mosque
10 Jun 2025
Zionist settlers have renewed storming of al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied al-Quds on Tuesday, under the protection of Israeli police.
According to the Palestinian News Agency (Wafa), eyewitnesses reported that dozens of settlers stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque in groups, conducted provocative tours of its compound, and performed Talmudic rituals under the protection of Israeli forces.
Settler groups issued a call for a mass storming of al-Aqsa Mosque this afternoon, including singing and dancing within its courtyards.
This was in celebration of amendments approved by the Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, allowing settlers to perform all Talmudic rituals inside al-Aqsa Mosque.
