Passing Car Drivers Saw Two-Three Militants Were “Specifically Waiting For A Bus Full Of Mata Vaishno Devi Pilgrims”

-------------

A preliminary investigation by the J&K Police into the June 9 terror attack in Reasi has revealed that two-three militants were “specifically waiting for a bus full of pilgrims” and were spotted by several car drivers before the attack.

With the help of one of the drivers, police have made a sketch of one of the suspects as security forces continue to hunt for them. The attack on a bus full of pilgrims on their way to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine on June 9 left nine persons dead and 41 injured.

The case has been transferred from the local police to the National Investigation Agency on the directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

“Hours after the incident, a team of senior officers of NIA, headed by an IG rank officer, visited the crime scene and the forensic team of NIA also visited the site to lift evidence. In view of the NIA expertise in handling terror cases, it was decided to hand over the investigation to the agency to probe the larger conspiracy and dismantle the whole network,” a senior official of the MHA said.

Following the attack, police formed several teams and asked them to trace all vehicle drivers who had taken the same road that day. “During investigation, one of the teams located a driver of a private vehicle who said he saw a man, wearing black clothes and a red bandana, standing on the road,” a source said.

With the help of the driver, police prepared a sketch of the suspect and shared it with all police stations and Central intelligence agencies.

“After visiting the crime scene, we found two specific spots in different directions from where the attackers had fired and prima facie it appears that they were helped by a local resident with logistical support,” the source said.

Another source said since it’s a known fact that all tourist buses in the area carry pilgrims, the militants waited for the bus they targeted. “We also suspect that the militants infiltrated into India from across the Line of Control and are still hiding in the heavily dense forests with the help of their local source… Bullet shells recovered from the spot suggest an M16 rifle was used by the attackers,” the source said.

Citing the statement of one of the survivors, the source said the victim saw one of the attackers wearing a mask and the militants opened fire once they saw the bus. They first targeted the driver and did not stop firing even after he lost control of the bus which fell into a gorge.

U.S. designates Iran-aligned Ansar Allah al-Awfiya as terrorist organization

The State Department under U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday designated the Iran-aligned Harakat Ansar Allah al-Awfiya as a terrorist organization. File Photo by NATO Press/UPI | License Photo

-------------

June 18 (UPI) -- The United States has designated Iraq-based Harakat Ansar Allah al-Awfiya as a terrorist organization as the Biden administration cracks down Iran proxy militias amid Israel's war in Gaza.

The U.S. State Department sanctioned the Iran-backed group as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist organization along with its 46-year-old secretary general, MuzhirMa'lak al-Sa'idi.

"The United States remains committed to using all available tools to counter Iran's support for terrorism and to degrade and disrupt the ability of Iran-backed groups to conduct terrorist attacks," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.

Harakat Ansar Allah al-Awfiya is part of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which has claimed responsibility for several recent attacks from Iraq and Syria targeting U.S. military, including a January drone strike that killed three U.S. service members in Jordan.

"HAAA is being designated for having committed or attempted to commit, posing a significant risk of committing or having participated in training to commit acts of terrorism that threaten the security of United States nationals or the national security, foreign policy or economy of the United States," the State Department said in a second statement, adding that al-Sa'idi was being hit for leading the organization.

The designation, which denies those named from the U.S. financial system, comes amid Israel's war against Hamas, another Iran proxy militia, in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza.

The conflict has embolden the Iran-backed groups, several of which have attacked U.S. military personnel and assets since the war began on Oct. 7.

Though stating it is not seeking to escalate the conflict, the United States has responded to the threat, and in early February retaliated for its three soldiers killed with an massive airstrike, hitting dozens of targets Baghdad.

The United States has previously designated three other Islamic Resistance in Iraq members -- Kata'ib Hezbollah in July 2009, Harakat al-Nujaba in March 2019 and Kata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada in November.

On Monday, the United States also sanctioned networks aiding Yemen's Houthi rebels, another Iran proxy militia, that has been attacking ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden amid the war.

The Houthi rebels were designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group in January.

Hajj medics successfully performed 24 open-heart operations on ailing pilgrims

June 18, 2024

Some 4,082 pilgrims had been admitted by hospitals and medical centers in the holy sites to receive the necessary health care. (SPA)

-------------

RIYADH: Specialist medical teams deployed in Makkah for the Hajj season had successfully performed 24 open-heart surgeries on pilgrims, the Ministry of Health said on Monday.

In a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the ministry said 249 pilgrims had also undergone cardiac catheterizations, and 1,006 had dialysis operations, in addition to the admission of 4,082 pilgrims in need to hospitals and medical centers to receive the necessary health care.

The patients were more than 142,000 pilgrims who have benefited from the various health services provided by health care centers in Makkah city and Mina since June 15, the first day of the annual pilgrimage.

Health services provided to the pilgrims varied between medical and specialized clinics, pharmacies, dialysis centers, intensive care rooms, and isolation units, said the MOH.

Three patients were evacuated by air ambulance and transferred to the King Ambdulaziz Medical Center in Jeddah. (SPA)

Air evacuations to Jeddah

In a separate report, SPA said a medical team from Ajyad Emergency Hospital, a member of the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Health Cluster, was able to save the life of a 53-year-old Egyptian pilgrim.

Officials said the patient arrived at the hospital complaining of chest pain. After determining that a heart clot was threatening the life and safety of the pilgrim, the case was dealt with urgently and quickly. The patient was then transferred to King Abdullah Medical City in Makkah to receive the required specialized medical service and care.

Two critical cases involving a 62-year-old Egyptian pilgrim and a 48-year-old Tunisian had to be evacuated by helicopter from hospitals in the holy sites to the King Abdullah Medical Complex in Jeddah, SPA said in another report.

Dr. Mahdi Othman, head of the KAMC’s Intensive Care Department, the Egyptian patient was received by air evacuation from Jabal al-Rahma Hospital, while the Tunisian patient was received by air evacuation from the Mina Emergency Hospital.

“Both cases contracted severe pneumonia while performing the Hajj rituals for this year 1445 AH, which led to respiratory failure, and then they needed an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation life support machine, and they were admitted to the intensive care unit under intensive medical observation and close follow-up,” the MOH said.

Gaza war death toll rises to 37,347

June 17, 2024

---------------

GAZA STRIP: The Health Ministry in Gaza said on Monday that at least 37,347 people have been killed in the territory during more than eight months of war between Israel and Palestinian militants.

The toll includes at least 10 deaths in the past 24 hours, a ministry statement said, adding that a total of 85,372 people had been wounded in the Gaza Strip since the war began when Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7.

Dire shortages of food and other essentials in the Gaza Strip have been exacerbated by overland access restrictions and the closure of the key Rafah crossing with Egypt since Israeli forces seized its Palestinian side in early May.

Israel’s air and ground campaign in Gaza has killed hundreds of family members from the same bloodline, an unprecedented toll on the small community mostly made up of refugees and their descendants.

An Associated Press investigation analyzed 10 strikes across the Gaza Strip between October and December that killed over 500 people.

Nearly every Palestinian family has suffered grievous, multiple losses.

But many have been decimated, particularly in the first months of the war.

AP geolocated and analyzed the strikes; consulted with weapons investigators; open data-analysts and legal experts; and drew on data by Airwars, a London-based conflict monitor.

They hit residential buildings and shelters with families inside. In no case was there an obvious military target or direct warning to those inside. In one case the family said they had raised a white flag on their building in a combat zone.

This war has proven even deadlier than the displacement from Israel in 1948, said Rashid Khalidi, a Palestinian-American historian at Columbia University, when 20,000 were killed in what is known as the Nakbah

“I don’t think anything like this has happened in modern Palestinian history,” said Khalidi.

In Gaza City, medics at Al-Ahli Hospital said on Saturday at least five people were killed in two separate airstrikes, and witnesses reported tank shelling in the southern neighbourhood of Zeitun.

At least one strike hit Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, residents said.

Palestinian officials in the far-southern city of Rafah reported tank shelling early on Monday.

Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN humanitarian agency OCHA, called for “further concrete measures by Israel to address longstanding issues” on humanitarian needs.

Gazans “urgently need food, water, sanitation, shelter, and healthcare, with many living near piles of solid waste, heightening health risks,” Laerke said.

Possible Ban On Wearing The Niqab, Associated With Wahhabism, In Russia

06/18/2024

Source: Freepik

--------------

Moscow (AsiaNews) - Discussions have been going on for weeks in Russia over the possible ban on wearing the Niqab, the Islamic veil that covers the entire face leaving only a slit for the eyes, often associated with the fundamentalist current of Wahhabism. It was the president of the Human Rights Council, ValerijFadeev, who once again proposed the ban, supported by various deputies and opinion leaders who insist on the need to curb extremist tendencies among Muslims throughout the country, even though the Ministry of the Interior has not provided any statistics to support these fears.

The issue of the Niqab, moreover, also divides the Muslim community in Russia, and religious leaders simply rule out restrictions on the Hijab, the bare-face veil. The Kprf communists have announced that the draft law on the ban, which envisages at least a 15 thousand rouble (150 euro) fine for any form of face covering, has already been sent to the government for official consideration. Fadeev said he was 'disturbed that so far the Niqab has not been banned in Russia', whereas in several Central Asian countries such a restriction has been in place for some time. The politicians intend to discuss the issue directly with the leaders of traditional Islam and regional authorities.

The Grand Mufti of Moscow, IldarAljautdinov, warns that a ban that is too direct could lead to tensions in society: "These attempts may appear to be a violation of the secular norms of law and the constitution, which guarantee all citizens of Russia the freedom to profess their religion, and to observe its canons". United Russia deputy in the Moscow Duma IldarGilmutdinov, head of the Federal National and Cultural Autonomy of the Tatars, spoke in favour of the Niqab, warning in turn that a ban could make Russia's relations with the entire Islamic world more difficult.

A member of the Human Rights Council, Kirill Kabanov, a long-standing supporter of the strict line on migrant issues, reacted to these statements by claiming that 'for traditional Russian Islam, this type of clothing is not at all natural', and that its recent spread is nothing more than 'a provocation by radicals, who have a hostile attitude towards us and our country, and are alien to our traditions and our world'. He, too, recalled that in Central Asia the Niqab and even the Paranja, the veil that completely covers women's bodies, is not allowed, and Kprf deputy Mikhail Matveev believes that 'first of all we need an official pronouncement from religious leaders on what clothes are appropriate for Muslims in Russia'.

Some recalled a speech by President Vladimir Putin in 2012, in which he argued that "the Hijab is not part of our culture, part of our traditional Islam, why should we take on traditions that are foreign to us?" Aljautdinov replied that 'if the decision of the ban really helps to protect the lives of our citizens, curbing the growth of Islamic extremism, then we will all support it, but this argument must be supported by real data'. It was the deputy interior minister, Andrej Khrapov, who responded to these appeals by noting that 'there are no clear signs of a radicalising trend in Islam in Russia'.

Other religious leaders, such as Kamil Samigullin of the Islamic administration of Tatarstan, also affirm that 'the ban is an attack on Muslims', while the Mufti of Volgograd, KifakhMokhamad, supports the proposal, recalling the recent attack on Krokus City Hall, pointing out that 'the Niqab is not a religious attribute, but only a habit of some Muslim societies, which has no reference to Sharia law'. Some propose to leave the decision 'in the hands of the governors, depending on regional traditions', and from many quarters it is reiterated that the key issue is not the (unproven) danger of radicalism, but rather to 'avoid the growth of Islamophobia' in Russia, which often becomes a form of repression of migrants.

The Kerala Migration Story: Decline In Migration To Gulf, Over 40% Emigrants Are Muslim

Written by Shaju Philip

June 18, 2024

The Kerala Migration Survey (KMS) 2023 report was unveiled at the Lok Kerala Sabha, state government-constituted platform for Keralites abroad and in other states, last week in Thiruvananthapuram.

Prepared by the International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMD) and Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation, the report reveals the findings of the sixth KMS, conducted every five years since 1998.

Sample selection

The survey looked at 20,000 households from all 14 districts of Kerala, selected via a stratified multi-stage random sampling method.

Rural and urban areas within the districts were considered distinct strata, and within each stratum, localities (Gram Panchayats or Municipal Wards) were selected based on the number of households in that particular stratum. In total, 500 localities were selected statewide.

In each of these 500 localities, 40 households were identified using systematic random sampling at the time of the survey — meaning each household (in a locality) had an equal chance of being chosen. The total sample of 20,000 households makes KMS among the biggest socio-economic surveys ever conducted in Kerala. For comparison, the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) sampled only 12,330 households state-wide.

Three hundred trained investigators were deployed for the survey, which for the first time, used a digital data collection tool.

The KMS 2023 estimated the number of emigrants from Kerala to be 2.2 million, slightly more than the 2.1 million recorded in 2018. But the number of emigrants to return home has also gone up, from 1.2 million in 2018 to 1.8 million in 2023. Here are some interesting trends:

DECLINE IN EMIGRATION TO THE GULF: Preference for destinations beyond the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE) has grown from 10.8% in 2018 to 19.5% in 2023. This is in line with the declining trend seen since 1998, when GCC destinations accounted for 93.8% of Kerala’s emigrants.

Migration from Kerala to Gulf countries has been declining.  Migration from Kerala to Gulf countries has been declining.

RISING STUDENT EMIGRATION: Rising number of student emigrants, who do not prefer GCC countries for their higher education, could be behind the aforementioned shift. In fact, it is students who have helped maintain the overall number of emigrants from the state even as there has been a decline in emigration among other populations. They constitute 11.3% of total emigrants from Kerala, with overall numbers almost doubling since 2018 — from 129,763 to 250,000.

MORE WOMEN EMIGRATING: Women are another category of emigrants who have seen a rise in their numbers and proportion, up from 15.8% in 2018 to 19.1% in 2023.They are generally better qualified than their male counterparts, with 71.5% women being graduates as against 34.7% men. Around 51.6% of women emigrants work in the nursing sector. Women also make up 45.6% of Kerala’s student migrant population. Around 40.5% of women emigrants are in Western countries, compared to only 14.6% of male emigrants.

NORTH KERALA SENDS MOST EMIGRANTS: Around 41.8% of emigrants hail from North Kerala, which is the home to a large section of migrants in GCC countries. Tirur taluk in the Muslim-majority Malappuram district continues to send the most migrants abroad. Central Kerala contributes to 33.1% of Kerala’s emigrant population, with migration to non-GCC destinations more prevalent. South Kerala sends 25% of the state’s emigrants.

OVER 40% EMIGRANTS ARE MUSLIMS: Muslims, who make up 26% of Kerala’s population (according to the 2011 census), make up 41.9% of the state’s emigrants. For comparison, Hindus comprise 35.2% of the migrant population, even as they make up about 54% of the state’s overall population. About 22.3% of Kerala’s migrants are Christians, who account for 18% of the state’s population.

GROWING REMITTANCES: Total remittances to Kerala saw a significant surge after the pandemic, reaching Rs 216,893 crores in 2023 from Rs 85,092 crores in 2018. This marks a 154.9% increase since 2018, and amounts to a per capital remittance of Rs 61,118 for the state’s population of 3.55 crores. Average remittance per emigrant household also increased to Rs 2.24 lakh in 2023, compared to Rs 96,185 in 2018. The data show that migrant households spent remittances on a variety of things: renovation of houses/shops account for 15.8%, paying of bank loans account for 14%, educational expenses 10 percent, and medical bills 7.7%. Only 6.9% of remittances are used for day-to-day expenditure.

INCREASE IN RETURNEES: The number of emigrants who have returned home has been growing over the decades. The last five years has seen the largest increase of returnees — 495,962 individuals or 38.3% — in the history of Kerala migration surveys. This, in no small part, due to Covid-19 pandemic-induced job loss. Around 18.4% of respondents reported job loss as a reason for return, 13.8% cited low wages, 7.5% poor working conditions, and 11.2% illness or accident. The desire to work in Kerala (16.1%), homesickness (10.2 %) and retirement (12.1%) were other key reasons.

Percentage of migrants who returned to Kerala has been increasing.  Percentage of migrants who returned to Kerala has been increasing.

The number of return migrants from Kerala has also been increasing. The number of return migrants from Kerala has also been increasing.

Trends over last 30 years

The first KMS in 1998, had estimated that roughly 1.4 million Keralites had emigrated abroad. This figure rose to 1.8 million in 2003, 2.2 million in 2008, and 2.4 million in 2013 before declining to 2.1 million in 2018.

The global Malayali diaspora is estimated to be 5 million, with another 3 million Malayalis living outside Kerala but within India.

More and more Indian students are going abroad to study. Findings from the KMS reflect this, with Kerala poised to become among the leading states when it comes to Indians studying abroad.

This comes with profound policy implications. The study suggests that there is an urgent need to enhance the state’s educational infrastructure, and provide resources that ensure safe migration pathways for future student emigrants. Regular monitoring and regulation of language training centres and recruitment agencies is crucial for reducing instances of deceit and fraud by agents. It is also important to develop new policies that will encourage those studying abroad to return home after acquiring valuable skills, fostering a wave of “brain gain”.

At the same time, given that 76.9% of Kerala’s emigrants are labour emigrants, it is essential to improve and strengthen their skills to help them secure better employment opportunities and pay abroad. This approach could also lead to emigrants choosing non-GCC countries, especially in the West, as destinations.

Lastly, the growing number of return migrants necessitates comprehensive rehabilitation and reintegration measures.

India’s children should know functioning mosque was desecrated and then demolished: Owaisi on NCERT textbook revision

June 18, 2024

India’s children should know that the Supreme Court called the demolition of the Babri Masjid an “egregious criminal act,” AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said on Tuesday, responding to revisions in the NCERT Class 12 political science textbook that referred to the apex court’s 2019 Ayodhya verdict as a “classic example” of consensus.

In a post on X, Owaisi wrote: ‘The NCERT has decided to replace Babri Masjid with the words “three domed structure.” It has also decided to call the Ayodhya judgement an example of “consensus.” India’s children should know that the Supreme Court called the demolition of Babri Masjid an “egregious criminal act”. India’s children should know that a functioning masjid was desecrated in 1949 and then demolished by a mob in 1992. They should not grow up glorifying criminal acts.’

The Indian Express first reported on June 16 that the revised Class 12 textbook does not mention the Babri Masjid by name but calls it a “three-domed structure” and that details from the earlier version of the textbook have been deleted, including the BJP rathyatra from Somnath in Gujarat to Ayodhya, the role of karsevaks, and the communal violence in the wake of the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992.

On the Supreme Court’s decision in the Ayodhya case, the revised version of the textbook reads, “The Supreme Court’s decision was celebrated by the society at large. It is a classic example of consensus building on a sensitive issue that shows the maturity of democratic ethos which are civilizationally ingrained in India.”

In 2019, a five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the entire disputed land be handed over to a trust to be constituted for the construction of a Ram temple and that Muslims be given five acres of either the acquired land near the site or at “a suitable prominent place in Ayodhya” for building a mosque.

In its verdict, the Supreme Court called the demolition of the Babri Masjid “an egregious violation of the rule of law”, which took place in “breach of the order of status quo and an assurance given to this court”.

Odisha: ProhibitoryOrders Imposed In BalasoreAfter Hindu, Muslim Groups Clash On Eid Ul Azha

Prohibitory orders were imposed in an area of Odisha’s Balasore town on Tuesday after violence broke out between a Hindu group and a Muslim group a day earlier on the festival of Bakri-Eid, reported The Hindu.

The district administration imposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure that prohibits the assembly of four or more persons from Pir Bazar to Patrapada in Balasore till midnight on Tuesday. Internet services were also suspended in a few sensitive areas, PTI reported.

Early on Monday, a few persons had alleged that cows were being slaughtered as part of the Bakri-Eid customs and that the water in a nearby drain had turned red with blood, reported The Hindu.

Bakri-Eid, also known as Id-ul-Adha, is a Muslim festival that commemorates the spirit of sacrifice. The festival also entails the slaughtering of goats.

Subsequently, locals blockaded the main road between Chandipur and Balasore and violence erupted between Hindu and Muslim groups, the newspaper reported.

Seven persons, including two police officers, were injured after stones were thrown, The Telegraph reported. Vehicles were also ransacked.

The authorities in Balasore have not made any statement suggesting that cows were indeed slaughtered in the area on Monday.

Superintendent of Police Sagarika Nath went to the site and the situation was brought under control, according to The Telegraph. “All the senior police officials are on the spot,” Nath said. “No FIR [first information report] has been lodged so far. The situation is under control.”

District Collector AsishThakare told The Hindu that the administration is keeping a watch on the situation. “Action will be taken against culprits who are responsible for vitiating harmony between two communities,” Thakare said.

Chief Minister Mohan CharanMajhi also directed Thakare to ensure peace in the area, The Telegraph reported. “Odisha is a peaceful state,” the newspaper quoted Majhi as saying. “At any cost, the administration will not allow it to be vitiated.”

JD(U) MP Says He Won’t Work For Muslims And Yadavs As They Did Not Vote For Him

June 18, 2024

Newly elected Janata Dal (United) MP from Bihar’s SitamarhiDevesh Chandra Thakur said on Monday that he would “not do any work” for Muslims and Yadavs, claiming that they did not vote for him in the Lok Sabha election, The Indian Express reported.

Thakur won the constituency by 51,356 votes against the Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Arjun Ray.

The Janata Dal (United) is a key partner of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government that assumed power for the third time after its win in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

At a function in Sitamarhi on Monday, Thakur said: “Yadavs and Muslims who come to me are welcome. They can have tea and sweets. But I will not do any work for them.”

He later said: “I can do any work for the common public but I will do the personal work of these two communities.”

His remarks sparked criticism from within his party as well as from the Rashtriya Janata Dal. Janata Dal (United) MP from Banka Giridhari Yadav said he condemns Thakur’s remarks and demanded that he immediately apologise, according to The Indian Express.

Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Misa Bharti asked what message the Sitamarhi MP was trying to put out through such “divisive remarks”, ANI reported.

“Now, there is a double-engine government,” she said, referring to the fact that the National Democratic Alliance is in power both at the Centre and in the Bihar government. “PM Narendra Modi says that there should be sabkasaath, sabkavikas [support of all, development for all]. So, why do the MPs make such statements?”

The Sitamarhi MP later stood by his remarks and claimed that he had been working for the people over the past 25 years without any discrimination. He, however, did not say how he concluded that Yadavs and Muslims did not vote for him

On June 7, Janata Dal (United) National Spokesperson KC Tyagi said that the party will not allow the government at the Centre to propagate campaigns against Muslims and other minority communities. “While we are there [in power with the BJP], no anti-Muslim, anti-minority campaign will be run,” he had said.

AI images fail to depict cultural nuances of Islamic architecture, research shows

Images generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) have revolutionized architectural design processes, offering architects the agility to produce highly sophisticated and imaginative designs.

However, in spheres immersed with culture, sensitivity and religion as in the case of Islamic architecture, AI-generated depictions usually fail to correctly present the nuanced understanding of historical Islamic elements and their interpretations, according to research published in the journal Buildings.

"In recent years, the widespread adoption of AI-image generators like Stable Diffusion and Midjourney have revolutionized architectural design processes, offering architects the ability to produce sophisticated and imaginative designs," says the research's main author Dr. Ahmad W. Sukkar, a scientist at Sharjah University's Department of Architectural Engineering.

However, and despite AI's potential for innovative design outcomes, "many examples found online reveal a blending of limited historical knowledge with inadequacies in the datasets used by AI image generators. In fields as culturally and historically sensitive as Islamic architecture, the integration of AI technology requires careful consideration."

AI models like Stable Diffusion and Midjourney claim to excel in creating artistic and architectural images and designs with nuanced qualities rich in texture and detail in addition to their ability to create stylized content and realistic visual imagery. They assist artists and architects to produce unique photorealistic images from text and image prompts.

Midjourney AI-generated photos: (A) using the prompt "Dome of the Rock" and (B) using the prompt "The Kaaba, also known as the Cube, is a stone building located at the center of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is considered the most sacred site in Islam and is revered as the House of God by Muslims worldwide". The prompt for (B) was produced with the help of ChatGPT. Credit: DOI: 10.3390/buildings14030786

The authors acknowledge that AI tools are capable of generating designs inspired by traditional Islamic architecture styles, but at the same time believe that navigating the intersection of AI and Islamic architecture presents architects with both opportunities and challenges.

They write, "AI image generators can be a valuable tool in the design process of Islamic architecture; however, it is necessary to use them cautiously. While AI can offer new possibilities and inspiration, it needs to be supported by human expertise and a deep understanding of the principles and traditions of architecture in the Islamic context.

"The human touch, craftsmanship, and cultural sensitivity integral to architecture in this context should be preserved and not be overlooked. Striking a balance is crucial, and AI should be seen as an advanced tool to augment human creativity rather than replace it entirely.

"AI-generated images may not capture the intangible aspects of heritage, such as cultural practices, rituals, or oral traditions, as these often go beyond empirical perception and encompass symbolic dimensions. In its current development stage, AI struggles to fully capture the depth and complexity of these elements, which are often intertwined with personal and subjective experiences."

On the thrust of their research, Sukkar says, "Our research delved into the intriguing intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and Islamic architecture, exploring how AI technologies can generate images of Islamic architectural heritage. Our investigation reveals both the immense potential and significant limitations of these AI systems.

"Through careful examination and comparison with historical sources, we have identified several factors that contribute to these discrepancies, including limitations in the prompt used to generate the images, challenges in accurately capturing regional and historical styles, and difficulties with architectural elements and details."

Artist Tracey Rose Accuses Swiss Museum of Censoring Video Referring to ‘Muslim Holocaust’

June 17, 2024

South African artist Tracey Rose accused the Kunstmuseum Bern of having censored an artwork mentioning a “Muslim Holocaust” from her current retrospective there, claiming that the Swiss institution had objected to such phrasing.

On social media over the weekend, Rose also denounced the Kunstmuseum for hosting a talk on artistic freedom connected to her show. She claimed that she had not been invited to the panel, which included one of the exhibition’s curators and the museum’s director.

“This is prejudicial to the global audience to whom my Artwork speaks, as well as elitist and exclusionary – distasteful to say the least; and abjectly draconian given that the discussion will centre around the horrors of the imbalanced war in The Holy Land, and the genocidal slaughter of unarmed civilians in Palestine by the Israeli government,” Rose wrote in a statement posted to Facebook on Saturday, the day before the talk was held.

A Kunstmuseum Bern spokesperson did not respond to request for comment.

Rose has frequently addressed misogyny, racism, South African politics and history, and more in her art, which has been shown widely in the art world, appearing in editions of the Venice Biennale, Documenta, the Sharjah Biennial, the Bienal de São Paulo, and more.

Her retrospective, “Shooting Down Babylon,” first appeared in 2022 at Cape Town’s Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art, which organized it, and then traveled to New York’s Queens Museum in 2023. At both of those venues, the exhibition was praised by critics and staged without controversy. (Both exhibitions took place prior to the October 7 Hamas attack and Israel’s subsequent military actions in Gaza.)

In her posts over the weekend, Rose alleged that the Kunstmuseum Bern had censored the phrase “Stop the Muslim Holocaust” from her 2012 video A Muster of Peacocks: THE SHOAH. The video had appeared in both the Cape Town and Queens iterations of the exhibition.

Initially commissioned for a show that took place in Cairo during the Arab Spring, Rose made the video in response to her stay in the Egyptian city, where she watched footage of the Port Said Stadium massacre of 2012, which killed dozens of people. Egyptians have claimed the lack of security at the stadium was intentional, since fans of the Al Ahly soccer league had shown up at anti-government protests. Rose said she made the work while pregnant with her son, in her Berlin apartment, not far from where the building’s inhabitants were once deported for Auschwitz.

“The museum directors told us that it is illegal to use the word ‘holocaust’ in Switzerland to describe mass genocide of any other group of people outside of the Jewish Holocaust in Europe during WWII,” Rose said in an email to ARTnews, speaking on behalf of herself and her studio representatives. “As South Africans, this challenged our belief in freedom of speech and expression.”

Rose said that she tried to come up with an alternative in which the video’s audio, partially crafted from her son’s sobs, would play in the Kunstmuseum Bern’s galleries. But she said that when she went to the opening, the audio was not installed.

In Switzerland, Rose’s show gained negative press before the show opened because the artist had in 2021 signed an open letter addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. That letter, which was signed by thousands of artists, referred to Israel’s actions as an “apartheid” and called the country a “colonizing power.”

Ahead of the show’s opening in February, the Swiss media resurfaced Rose’s signature, spurring Jonathan Kreutner, secretary general of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities, to accuse her of having “radical and non-constructive positions.” In response, the museum added a lengthy statement to its online description for the show.

“Tracey Rose has Jewish and Muslim roots,” the statement reads. “She condemns the cruel attacks by Hamas on Israel and the severe retaliatory measures by the Israeli government, which also affect the unarmed civilian population in Palestine. She condemns all forms of Islamophobia, racism and anti-Semitism and has clearly spoken out in favor of a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine: ‘I believe in the right of the State of Israel and the State of Palestine to exist.'”

A description for Sunday’s talk reiterated some of the background about the controversy over Rose’s signature of the 2021 letter. The stated aim of the panel was to discuss “the meaning and limits of artistic freedom.” Among the panelists were Zeitz MOCAA director and chief curator Koyo Kouoh and Kunstmuseum Bern director Nina Zimmer, along with political science and African studies experts and Ralph Lewin, president of the Swiss Federation of of Jewish Communities.

Rose accused Swiss politicians and Kouoh of “abusive treatment.” Speaking directly to the panelists, she wrote on Facebook, “You have all failed in your duties as cultural practitioners and are not deserving of your positions, where you receive overly generous salaries while failing to pay Artists labour and adequate loan fees.”

A representative for Zeitz MOCAA did not respond to a request for comment.

Probe finds two universities failed to protect Jewish, Muslim students

By Laura Meckler

The federal Education Department said Monday that two universities failed to adequately protect both Jewish and Muslim students in the heated days after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel and during the war in Gaza that followed.

Both the University of Michigan and the City University of New York (CUNY) and several of its affiliated colleges agreed to reexamine some past cases and to conduct training, among other actions, to resolve federal investigations into student complaints amid the Middle East conflict. Jewish and Palestinian students have described harassment and other incidents of discrimination, with reports of hostile language, disrupted classes, vandalism and more.

“Hate has no place on our college campuses — ever,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement. He called the resolutions a positive step forward but said, “Sadly, we have witnessed a series of deeply concerning incidents in recent months.”

The cases are the first since Oct. 7 to be resolved by the Education Department. Some department investigations related to antisemitism and Islamophobia were pending before the war, but the number has spiked as campuses across the country have become engulfed by pro-Palestinian protests. An additional 106 cases are pending at the Office for Civil Rights in the Education Department, involving both universities and K-12 school districts, a spokeswoman said.

CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez said the university was grateful to the Office for Civil Rights for collaborating on a holistic plan to ensure that all students are safe on its campuses. “CUNY is committed to providing an environment that is free from discrimination and hate, and these new steps will ensure that there is consistency and transparency in how complaints are investigated and resolved,” he said.

University of Michigan President Santa J. Ono said in a statement that the university condemns “all forms of discrimination, racism and bias.” He added: “Since October 7, we have been deeply troubled by the statements and actions of some members of our community.” The university is required to uphold free-speech principles, including reprehensible speech, but it works to ensure that “debate does not tip over into targeted harassment or bullying,” Ono said.

In its investigation of the University of Michigan, the Office for Civil Rights reviewed 75 reports of harassment and discrimination since the 2022-23 school year and found the university did virtually no investigations. There was also “no evidence” that the university complied with its legal requirements under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, the report said. The provision bars discrimination based on shared ancestry, including against those who are Jewish or Muslim.

The details of the investigation highlight the struggle universities have faced in balancing free-speech rights against harassment. Incidents cited in the Michigan report included antisemitic comments in classes, during protests and online.

One incident involved an October 2023 event on the central campus in Ann Arbor, where protesters shouted about “Nazi liberation,” the investigation concluded. The Office for Civil Rights said it could not find evidence that the university responded to the event beyond forwarding the report to its public affairs office for a response.

That same month, the office said, a Jewish student reported being targeted and harassed on social media. The student reported that he had viewed a graduate-student instructor’s Instagram story that included discussion of pro-Palestinian topics. After that, the instructor took a screenshot showing that the student had viewed the story and then posted his own story, tagging the student and showing that he had an Israeli flag in his bio. The instructor wrote, “Did you like my educational talk.”

The university declined to formally adjudicate the situation, saying social media is “largely going to be protected as free speech,” the investigation concluded. It found that this response was insufficient.

In another, widely reported incident in November 2023, a student reported that someone yelled that she had “terrorist” friends because she participated in a pro-Palestinian protest. The university responded with a restorative circle, a commonly used alternative to discipline in which those involved are encouraged to apologize, but it did not take further action. This was also listed among cases in which there were inadequate responses.

“Everyone has a right to learn in an environment free from discriminatory harassment based on who they are,” Catherine E. Lhamon, assistant secretary for civil rights at the Education Department, said in a statement.

At the City University of New York and its affiliated colleges, there were nine pending complaints from both Jewish and Muslim students, and the resolution agreement announced Monday covers them all.

In the earliest case, the investigation found that in 2021, students and faculty members at Hunter College commandeered a required college course in a call for what they described as the decolonization of Palestinian territories. When Jewish students tried to speak, they were told to listen and not talk, investigators found. The federal investigation concluded that Hunter’s response to the incident was inadequate.

To resolve these complaints, both universities agreed, among other things, to review or reopen previously filed complaints; report the results to the federal government; train employees regarding the university’s legal obligations to respond to alleged discrimination; and administer climate surveys to evaluate the extent to which students and employees experience or witness discrimination and harassment based on race, color or national origin, including shared ancestry.

Two key Democrats approve mega arms sale to Israel amid Gaza war

18 June 2024

Under pressure from the administration of US President Joe Biden, two key Democrats in Congress have agreed to approve a major arms sale to Israel, including 50 F-15 fighter jets worth more than $18 billion, a report says.

Citing three unnamed officials familiar with the issue, the Washington Post reported on Monday that Representative Gregory Meeks and Senator Ben Cardin, who had for months held up the sale, had signed off on the deal several weeks ago.

“The decision, which has not been previously reported, underscores the substantial appetite in Washington to continue the flow of arms to Israel despite concerns from younger members of Congress that the United States should use its leverage to pressure Israel to reduce the intensity of the war and allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza,” the Post said.

Meeks and Cardin are two of four lawmakers who can effectively veto a foreign military sale.

"Any issues or concerns Chair Cardin had were addressed through our ongoing consultations with the (Biden) Administration, and that’s why he felt it appropriate to allow this case to move forward,” Eric Harris, communications director for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told the Post in a statement.

Meanwhile, Meeks said he has been in “close touch” with the White House about the package and “repeatedly urged the administration to continue pushing Israel to make significant and concrete improvements on all fronts when it comes to humanitarian efforts and limiting civilian casualties.”

The State Department can now proceed with notifying Congress of the approved sale, the next step to completing the transaction.

If ultimately approved, the deal would be one of the largest arms sales to Israel since the war on Gaza began.

The United States has been providing the regime with thousands of tons of military equipment since Tel Aviv launched the war in October 2023.

Israel unleashed the Gaza onslaught on October 7 after Hamas-led Palestinian resistance groups carried out Operation al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

The Tel Aviv regime has so far killed at least 37,347 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 85,372 others, according to the Gaza-based health ministry.

The occupying entity has also imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

The sacred sites in Makkah and Madinah that Hajj pilgrims have a chance to experience

June 17, 2024

JEDDAH: During the pilgrimages of Hajj and Umrah, devout Muslims seek out sites that deepen their understanding of Islam and its rich heritage.

The historical sites and archaeological museums in Makkah Al-Mukarramah and Madinah Al-Munawara offer a profound educational experience to millions of visitors from around the world who flock to the two holy cities each year.

After completing their religious rites, such as Umrah and Tawaf, and paying their respects at the Haram, pilgrims yearn to immerse themselves in the history of Makkah and Madinah.

With histories going back thousands of years, these cities are embodiments of the origins of Islamic culture, having welcomed pilgrims down the ages and developed a distinct cultural identity in the process of doing so.

To grasp the historical importance of these cities and gain a deeper insight into their religious significance, visitors are urged to venture beyond the well-known landmarks like Jannat Ul Mua’lla, the Cave of Hira in Jabal Al-Nour, Mount Arafat and Masjid-e-Ayesha.

Nestled beside the renowned Jabal Al-Nour, the Hira Cultural District offers a distinctive fusion of cultural, historical, and engaging encounters. Encompassing 67,000 square meters, this district offers pilgrims an immersive voyage through time, enabling them to forge a connection with the vibrant history of Makkah.

Near the Haram lies the historic site of Hudaibiyah, where Prophet Muhammad signed the crucial treaty of Hudaibiyah. A mosque now stands at the site, alongside a weathered structure of unknown origin.

In 809, during a time of extreme water scarcity in Makkah, Queen Zubaida, the wife of Abbasid Caliph Harun Rashid, undertook a pilgrimage to the holy city. Witnessing the challenging conditions faced by pilgrims, she took immediate action by ordering the construction of the Zubaida Canal.

This canal, built more than a thousand years ago, has continued to supply water to pilgrims visiting Makkah ever since.

Lastly, Mount Abu Qubais, where a miraculous event involving the moon occurred, serves as a reminder of divine intervention in Makkah’s scenery.

One of the must-visit attractions in Makkah is the AssalaamuAleykaAyyuhanNabiyyu Museum, which educates visitors about the life of Prophet Muhammad through innovative displays and artifacts.

By providing glimpses into the type of dwelling he may have inhabited and showcasing clothing from his era, the museum offers a unique insight into his life, allowing guests to delve into the lives of his ancestors, wives, children, and descendants.

The collaborative effort of more than 150 scholars ensures the museum’s authenticity in religious, and archaeological details, creating a comprehensive and accurate portrayal of Prophet Muhammad’s life and legacy.

“I have been guiding pilgrims on deeply spiritual journeys for nearly 15 years, introducing them to the holy city’s lesser-known treasures,” Ahmed Khan, a private tour guide, told Arab News.

“Pilgrims are always thrilled and grateful when we visit sites where the legacy of Prophet Muhammad and the rich heritage of Islam resonate with each step.”

Another private tour guide, Aman Javaid, emphasized the importance of providing pilgrims with accurate information about the sites they visit.

“It’s crucial for me to ensure that I share all the correct details about these places,” he told Arab News. “Many pilgrims often mention the Cave of Hira, but I make it a point to take them to the Cave of Thawr as well.

The Thawr Cave, located in the JabalThawrmopuntain, is the place where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companion Abu Bakr hid from the Quraysh during the migration to Madinah. (Supplied)

“This revered site is where the Prophet Muhammad and his companion Abu Bakr sought refuge during their migration to Madinah. Sharing the story of how they escaped their enemies and found solace there always piques the pilgrims’ interest. I make sure I have comprehensive knowledge about these sacred sites.”

The Cave of Thawr underscores the importance of seeking refuge and divine guidance during adversity, marking a pivotal moment in Islamic history. Pilgrims honor the legacy of the prophet and Abu Bakr by offering prayers and paying their respects in this sacred place.

Located at the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad, the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Library serves as a hub for knowledge and research. With a collection of more than 350,000 rare books and manuscripts, this esteemed institution stands as a testament to Makkah’s cultural and intellectual heritage.

Within the King Abdulaziz Complex lies the renowned Kiswa Factory, where artisans annually produce the exquisite black silk coverings for the Holy Kaaba. Adorned with intricate silver and gold embroidery and Quranic inscriptions, these coverings are a symbol of reverence and tradition.

The factory, now known as the King Abdulaziz Complex for Kiswa, showcases the artistry of silk knitting and embroidery, preserving a centuries-old craft.

Madinah, as the second holiest city in Islam, holds immense importance for Muslims undertaking Umrah and Hajj pilgrimages. Pilgrims visit to pay their respects at renowned mosques and historical sites steeped in cultural and religious significance.

The city is home to historic mosques dating back to the time of Prophet Muhammad, offering a spiritually enriching experience.

Masjid Al-Qiblatain stands out with its traditional design and renowned twin mihrabs, where it is believed Prophet Muhammad received a divine command to change the qibla direction. Rebuilt during King Fahd’s reign, this mosque remains a beautiful and significant place for prayers in Madinah.

Masjid Al-Qiblatain, meaning “two directions,” was built two years after Prophet Mohammed arrived in Madinah, a city known for its rich Islamic history, and a customary stop for millions of Umrah and Hajj pilgrims every year. (SPA)

Another notable site is Masjid Abu Bakr, honoring the first caliph and close companion of the prophet, reflecting the deep bond between Abu Bakr and Prophet Muhammad through its modest yet serene setting and inviting visitors to draw inspiration from Abu Bakr’s unwavering faith.

Among the historic mosques in Madinah, Masjid Al-Ahzab holds a significant place in Islamic culture, marking the site of a pivotal battle where the prophet’s du’a led to victory.

Meanwhile, Masjid Al-Ghamamah, though small in size, remains an important site for seeking blessings during ziyarat in Madinah. Visitors are encouraged to respect the mosque’s guidelines, including observing prayer times and maintaining modesty, to fully appreciate the spiritual significance of these revered locations.

Another fascinating site relates to the Battle of the Trench, also known as the Khandak Battle — a significant military confrontation in 624 between the Muslims of Madinah and the Makkan army, which was attempting to suppress the spread of Islam.

Fought near the Badr wells, it proved to be a decisive victory for the Muslims, highlighting their strength and Prophet Muhammad’s leadership.

Likewise, the Garden of Hazrat Salman Farsi in Madinah is a historic site where Prophet Muhammad planted 300 date palms to free Salman Farsi from slavery. Located near Masjid Quba, the garden remains lush with date palm trees and features a date shop for visitors to enjoy tea amid the greenery.

Meanwhile, the city’s oldest museum, Al-Madinah Museum, highlights Islamic history and the life of Prophet Muhammad through rare artifacts and models of city landmarks.

Similarly, As Safiyyah Museum and Park, located near the Prophet’s Mosque, offers a unique cultural experience with a focus on educational enrichment and enjoyment.

The centerpiece is the Story of Creation Museum, which utilizes advanced technology to visually depict the creation narrative.

Finally, the Hejaz Railway Museum is housed in the historic railway station and provides insights into the significance of the Hejaz Railway, which was built to facilitate pilgrimages to the holy cities. The museum displays vintage locomotives, historical photographs, and documents detailing the railway’s history.

These sites not only deepen pilgrims’ understanding of Islamic history but also foster a greater appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Through these visits, pilgrims connect with the legacy of their faith, making their pilgrimage a truly holistic journey.

Israeli negotiator says tens of Gaza hostages ‘alive with certainty’

June 17, 2024

JERUSALEM: A senior Israeli negotiator told AFP Monday that tens of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza are certainly alive and that Israel cannot accept halting the war until all captives are released in a deal.

Hamas militants seized 251 hostages on October 7, of whom Israel believes 116 remain in Gaza, including 41 who the army says are dead.

“Tens are alive with certainty,” the official said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak publicly on the issue.

“We cannot leave them there a long time, they will die,” he said, adding that a vast majority of them were being held by Hamas militants.

US President Joe Biden last month unveiled a three-phase proposal to end the war in Gaza, which includes a ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Biden said the first phase includes a “full and complete ceasefire” lasting six weeks, with Israeli forces withdrawing from “all populated areas of Gaza.”

The official said Israel could not end the conflict with Hamas before a hostage deal because the militants could “breach their commitment... and drag out the negotiations for 10 years” or more.

“We cannot, at this point in time — before signing the agreement — commit to ending the war,” the official said.

“Because during the first phase, there’s a clause that we hold negotiations about the second phase. The second phase is the release of the men and male soldier hostages.”

The official said the Israeli negotiating team had greenlit the Biden plan.

“We expect, and are waiting for, Hamas to say ‘yes,’” the official said.

The Israeli government has yet to publicly approve the Biden plan.

“In the event we don’t reach an agreement with Hamas, the IDF (army) will continue to fight in the Gaza Strip in a no less intense fashion than it’s fighting now,” he said.

“In a different manner, but an intense manner.”

The war between Israel and Hamas broke out after Hamas carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7 that resulted in the deaths of 1,194 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign in Gaza has killed at least 37,347 people, also mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.

Fight for control of Yemen’s banks between government, Houthis threatens to further wreck economy

June 18, 2024

SANAA, Yemen: Yemen’s Houthi rebels and its internationally recognized government are locked in a fight for control of the country’s banks that experts warn is threatening to further wreck an economy already crippled by nearly a decade of war.

The rivalry over the banks is throwing Yemen’s financial system into deeper turmoil. Already, the Houthis who control the north and center of the country and the government running the south use different currency notes with different exchange rates. They also run rival central banks.

The escalating money divide is eroding the value of Yemen’s currency, the riyal, which had driven up prices for clothing and meat before the Islamic holiday of Eid Al-Adha started on Sunday.

For weeks, Yemenis in Houthi-controlled areas have been unable to pull their money out of bank savings accounts, reportedly because the Houthi-run central bank, based in the capital, Sanaa, has stopped providing liquidity to commercial and government banks. Protests have broken out in front of some banks, dispersed by security forces.

Yemen has been torn by civil war ever since the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels took over Sanaa and much of Yemen’s north and center in 2015. The Saudi-backed internationally recognized government and its nominal ally the Southern Transitional Council, a group supported by the United Arab Emirates, govern the south and much of the east, centered in the southern port city of Aden.

Yemen was already the Arab world’s poorest country before the war began. Punitive actions by each side against the other’s banks over the past week now threaten to undermine merchants’ ability to import food and basic commodities and to disrupt the transfer of remittances from Yemenis abroad, on which many families depend, said EdemWosornu, director of operations and advocacy for the UN humanitarian coordination office known as OCHA.

“All these factors will likely deepen poverty, worsen food insecurity and malnutrition, and increase reliance on humanitarian assistance,” she told a UN Security Council briefing on Thursday. The dispute could escalate to the point that banks in Houthi-run areas are barred completely from international financial transactions, which she said would have “catastrophic ramifications.”

The internationally recognized government moved the central bank to Aden in 2016, and since then began issuing new banknotes to replace worn-out riyals. Houthi authorities, which set up their own central bank in Sanaa, banned the use of the new money in areas under their control.

In March, the Houthi-controlled central bank announced it was rolling out its own new 100-riyal coins. The international community and Yemen’s recognized government denounced the move, saying the Houthis were trying to set up their own financial system and warning it will deepen Yemen’s economic divide.

Adding to the confusion, the bills have different exchange rates — riyals issued in Sanaa go for about 530 to the dollar, while those from Aden are around 1,800 to the dollar.

In response, the Aden-based central bank gave banks 60 days to relocate their headquarters to the southern city and stop operating under Houthi policies, or else risk facing sanctions related to money laundering and anti-terrorism laws.

The central bank was “forced to make these decisions, especially after the Houthi group issued their own currency and took unilateral steps toward complete independence from the internationally recognized Central Bank in Aden,” said Mustafa Nasr, an economic expert and head of the Studies and Economic Media Center SEMC.

No banks met the deadline — either because they needed more time or because they feared Houthi sanctions if they moved, Nasr said.

When the deadline ran out last week, the central bank in Aden banned dealing with six banks headquartered in Sanaa, meaning currency exchange offices, money transfer agencies and banks in the south could no longer work with them.

In retaliation, the Houthi-run central bank in Sanaa banned all dealings with 13 banks headquartered in Aden. That means people in Houthi-controlled areas can’t deposit or withdraw funds through those banks or receive wire transfers made through them.

Even as the fight for control is going on, both sides are facing a cash crunch. The Houthi government has few sources of foreign currency and its new coins aren’t recognized outside its territory.

In January, the United States designated the Houthis as a global terror group in response to the rebels’ attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea. The Houthis say the attacks are in retaliation for the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. Because of the US decision, banks around the world might be concerned and reluctant to continue any financial dealings with banks that have headquarters under Houthi control, said Youssef Saeed, a University of Aden economic professor.

The economy in Aden isn’t significantly better. The government’s revenues have been hit hard ever since Houthi attacks on oil ports in late 2022 forced a halt in oil exports, the main earner of foreign currency.

Since March, depositors in Houthi-run areas have been unable to pull money out of their accounts. The central bank in Sanaa hasn’t announced any formal restrictions, but several economists told The Associated Press that it has informally stopped releasing funds that individual banks have put in its coffers — in part because of a lack of liquidity.

At one bank that saw protests by depositors last month, the International Bank of Yemen, a note hung in the lobby said, “In coordination with the Central Bank, withdrawals from old accounts have been suspended until further notice.”

Um Ahmed, a 65-year-old woman who was among those protesting outside the bank, said that she was trying to withdraw money to help her son buy a motor scooter for work, but the bank refused.

“I served this country as a teacher for 35 years and saved every penny and deposited my money at the bank, but they took it all,” she said. “This money belongs to my husband and me and our children.”

Protests erupt again in Algeria’s northern Tiaret region over water shortage

June 18, 2024

ALGIERS: Protesters took to the streets for the second day Monday in Algeria’s northern Tiaret region, social media reports said, in rare demonstrations against severe shortages of drinking water.

President AbdelmadjidTebboune had vowed to address the issue by the Eid Al-Adha holiday which began Sunday.

According to several social media accounts, demonstrations erupted and roads were blocked in Tiaret, southwest of the capital Algiers, from the start of Eid Al-Adha.

Images shared on social media showed at least two roads connecting Tiaret to the neighboring towns of Frenda and Boucheguif blocked by rocks and improvised barricades.

But neither official nor private domestic media reported on the protests.

“Your promises to the residents of Tiaret have been in vain. From the first day of Eid, many areas have been without water,” one user posted on the Algerian water company’s page.

About 40 kilometers (25 miles) away from the city of Tiaret, in Rahouia, images circulated online showed a gathering of citizens blocking the local district chief from leaving his headquarters until he heard their concerns.

Since May, all the tributaries of the semi-desert region and its Bakhedda dam have run dry.

Protests broke out at the start of June in Tiaret, with demonstrators burning tires and blocking roads at the time, according to social media posts.

Faced with the issue in the lead-up to early elections in September, President AbdelmadjidTebboune had called a cabinet meeting on June 2 and ordered the interior and water ministers to draw up an urgent plan to address the water shortages within 48 hours.

The following day, the two ministers traveled to Tiaret to present a plan to resolve the problem “before Eid Al-Adha.”

A system supplying water from wells connected to the water network resolved the issue in central Tiaret, but not in other parts of the region, according to online posts.

Protests have been rare since Tebboune’s election in December 2019 after his predecessor AbdelazizBouteflika stepped down in the wake of mass Hirak movement demonstrations against him.

Tebboune has not yet declared whether he will seek reelection but has been very visible in the media and at public events.

Iran’s presidential candidates debate economic policies ahead of the June 28 vote

June 18, 2024

TEHRAN, Iran: Six presidential candidates on Monday discussed Iran’s economic problems in a four-hour live debate on state TV, ahead of the June 28 presidential election following a helicopter crash last month that killed President Ebrahim Raisi and seven others.

It was the first of five debates planned in the 10 days remaining before the vote in a shortened campaign to replace Raisi, a hard-line protégé of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei once floated as a possible successor to the 85-year-old cleric.

The candidates were to discuss their proposals and plans for Iran’s spiraling economy, struggling under sanctions from the United States and other Western nations.

They all promised they would try and get the sanctions lifted and introduce reforms but none offered any details. The candidates also discussed inflation, the budget deficit, Iran’s housing problem and ways to fight corruption.

The June 28 election comes at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and the West over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program, its arming of Russia in that country’s war on Ukraine and its wide-reaching crackdowns on dissent.

Iran’s support of militia proxy forces throughout the wider Middle East, meanwhile, have, been increasingly in the spotlight as Iran-backed Yemen’s Houthi rebels attack ships in the Red Sea over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

Five of the candidates are hard-liners while the sixth candidate, lawmaker Masoud Pezeshkian, 69, is a heart surgeon who has the support of some pro-reformers.

The most prominent candidate remains Mohammad BagherQalibaf, 62, a former Tehran mayor with close ties to the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. However, many remember that Qalibaf, as a former Guard general, was part of a violent crackdown on Iranian university students in 1999. He also reportedly ordered live gunfire to be used against students in 2003 while serving as the country’s police chief.

Among those running for president are also Iran’s vice president, Amir Hossein QazizadehHashemi, 53, and the current Tehran mayor, Ali Reza Zakani 58. A member of Supreme National Security Council, 58-year-old Saeed Jalili and cleric Mostafa Pourmohammadi, 64, a previous interior minister under former relatively moderate President Hassan Rouhani, are also in the race.

Qalibaf promised he would be a “strong” president who would support the poor, better manage the economy and effort to remove sanctions through diplomatic means.

Pezeshkian said the sanctions were a “disaster” and also lobbied for less restrictions on the Internet. Iran has long blocked Facebook, X, Instagram, Telegram and other major social media platforms and messaging systems, mainly over security concerns

All the candidates pledged to strengthen the country’s currency, the rial, which has plunged to 580,000 against the dollar. The rial was 32,000 to the dollar when Iran and world powers reached a deal with world powers in 2015 on capping Tehran’s nuclear program in return for the lifting of sanctions.

The six stayed away from the topic of the tattered nuclear deal. Khamenei has final say on all major state matters, including nuclear, foreign policy, space and military programs.

Pro-reform figures such as former President Mohammad Khatami and former foreign minister Mohammad JavadZarif, who negotiated the 2015 nuclear deal have backed Pezeshkian, though votes in his favor in his parliamentary constituency in the northwestern city of Tabriz declined from 36 percent to 24 percent of the vote in elections over the past eight years.

Raisi won Iran’s 2021 presidential election in a vote that saw the lowest turnout in the Islamic Republic’s history.

Israeli anti-government protesters rally in Jerusalem

June 18, 2024

JERUSALEM: Anti-government protesters took to the streets of Jerusalem on Monday, clashing with police near the house of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and calling for new elections.

Netanyahu once again sits atop one of the most right-wing coalitions in Israel’s history after a wartime unity government fell apart a week ago when two centrist former generals, Benny Gantz and GadiEisenkot, quit.

Netanyahu is now dependent on ultra-Orthodox and far-right partners, whose hard-line agenda caused a major rift in Israeli society even before Hamas’ Oct. 7 assault sparked the war in Gaza.

The often weekly demonstrations have yet to change the political landscape, and Netanyahu still controls a stable majority in parliament.

Following the departures of Gantz and Eisenkot, opposition groups declared a week of street protests that include blocking highways and mass demonstrations.

By sundown, a crowd of thousands had gathered outside the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, before marching to Netanyahu’s private home in the city.

The demonstration grew rowdy. After reaching Netanyahu’s house, some of the protesters broke off and tried to break through barriers set up by the police, who pushed them back. At one point a bonfire was lit in the street. Police used a water canon to disperse the demonstration.

Many waved Israeli flags. Others carried signs criticizing Netanyahu’s handling of pivotal issues, like promoting a divisive military draft bill that exempts ultra-Orthodox Jews from otherwise mandatory service, as well as his handling of the war with Hamas in Gaza and fighting with Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

“The healing process for the country of Israel, it starts here. After last week when Benny Gantz and Eisenkot left the coalition, we are continuing this process and hopefully this government will resign soon,” said protester Oren Shvill.

Drivers hit out at 'worst parking ever seen' as cars left outside Birmingham mosque

17 JUN 2024

Furious motorists have hit out after cars were recklessly left on a bustling city roundabout outside one of the UK's largest mosques while worshippers celebrated Eid-al Adha.

Thousands of Muslims flocked to Central Jamia Mosque Ghamkol Sharif in Small Heath, Birmingham, for celebrations earlier today.

However, images show how scores of worshippers triggered traffic mayhem by abandoning their vehicles on one of the city's busiest roundabouts.

Eyewitnesses reported at least one crash and several near-misses as drivers tried to reverse off the Poet's Corner roundabout into oncoming traffic.

Despite the vast number of illegally parked cars, it's thought that no parking fines were handed out throughout the morning.

Simon Gutteridge, 40, who was attempting to get to work when he got caught up in the chaos along the A45 Small Heath Highway, said it was a 'miracle nobody was badly hurt or killed'.

The engineer, from Newtown, Birmingham, expressed his disbelief: "I just couldn't believe my eyes. People were parking absolutely anywhere and seemed oblivious to the danger they were causing."

"I've seen some bad parking at football matches and concerts but never anything like this - it was crazy and caused absolute gridlock around the area."

"People were reversing the wrong way around the island and directly into traffic. They just plonked their cars on the roundabout like it was a genuine parking space."

"It was a miracle nobody was badly hurt or killed to be honest - that is one of the busiest roundabouts in Birmingham along a major commuter route."

Another motorist, who chose to remain anonymous, shared: "There was at least one collision as somebody reversed off the roundabout and lots of near-misses."

"I could not see one single car had been given a ticket or anything like that. It was extremely dangerous."

"It could be the worst parking I've seen anywhere in the UK - I was just baffled that so many people thought it was fine."

"One or two cars you could understand but there was about 20 of them on the roundabout alone as well as just abandoned on nearby streets."

West Midlands Police said it was collaborating with the council to address the problem.

A spokesperson added: "We're aware of ongoing issues with motorists parking on the roundabout on Small Heath Highway. Local officers are working with Birmingham City Council to tackle the problem."

They added: "Where traffic offences such as highway obstruction are seen by officers, we will issue tickets."

Central Jamia Mosque Ghamkol Sharif and Birmingham City Council have been approached for their comments.

Türkiye warned Russia about potential Moscow terror attack – media

18 Jun, 2024

Turkish intelligence warned Russia of a second terrorist attack intended to follow the deadly massacre at the Crocus City Hall outside Moscow this spring, Hurriyet reported on Tuesday.

The attack on the venue took place in late March when a group of armed men – later identified as ethnic Tajiks – stormed the venue ahead of a rock concert, killing 145 people and injuring more than 500 others. It was the deadliest act of terrorism in the country since the early 2000s.

Russian officials said the attack was prepared, financed, and coordinated by the Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIS-K) terrorist organization, but claimed that the group was used by Ukraine as a proxy. Kiev has denied any involvement.

Hurriyet noted that Türkiye has long been on the lookout for threats posed by ISIS-K. Ankara’s special services also identified and questioned numerous persons of interest in the aftermath of an attack on a Catholic church in Istanbul in late January, establishing contact with the Russian side on the matter.

The paper said two of the culprits who carried out the Crocus City Hall attack had resided in Moscow for a long time and had on numerous occasions briefly entered Türkiye to extend residence permits, adding that Russia was notified of this.

By interrogating the captured ISIS-K members, Türkiye learned that “the terrorist organization had planned a second attack after the first attack on the concert hall,” Hurriyet said, adding that Ankara told Moscow that the organization was planning to target “a crowded shopping mall.”

The head of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), AleksandrBortnikov, previously said that before the Crocus City shooting, Moscow was warned by the US about an impending terrorist attack, but the information was “general” in nature. He said Russia “had taken appropriate measures” to prevent terrorist attacks, noting that they targeted a certain group of individuals, and that “information did not check out at the time.”

Russia will demand compensation for sanctions – Medvedev

17 Jun, 2024

Russia will assess the damage done to its economy by Western sanctions and demand restitution at some point down the road, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said.

Commenting on the latest batch of restrictions imposed on Moscow by Washington last week, the official, who currently serves as deputy chair of the Russian Security Council, claimed that the West is waging a “war without rules” on Russia.

The US has sanctioned more than 4,000 Russian individuals and companies since February 2022, when the Ukraine conflict began. The EU, UK, Canada, Japan, and several other nations have also imposed similar restrictions on Russia.

On Monday, Medvedev said that Moscow was going to “be evaluating [the damage done] so as to be able to demand [compensation from] the countries that have imposed sanctions on Russia.”

He suggested that “one could start systematizing and evaluating the damage done to countries [that have] suffered from sanctions adopted in circumvention of the UN Security Council.” The former Russian head of state added that quite a significant number of nations would be subject to potential claims and that a “register of losses inflicted by crimes of the colonial epoch and neo-colonialism” would likely be necessary to get this process off the ground.

Medvedev stressed the importance of “seeking justice from former colonial powers.”

Last week, the deputy chair of the Security Council argued that Moscow should exploit every weakness of the US and its allies to inflict “maximum damage” on them. Reacting to the sanctions announced by the US Departments of State and Treasury last Wednesday, Medvedev insisted that Russia should retaliate in every possible way instead of just ignoring the Western punitive measures.

The latest sanctions target 300 additional individuals and entities in Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, and Türkiye, including those in the energy, metals and mining, and financial sectors. According to the US authorities, the measures are intended to sever the “remaining avenues for international materials and equipment… from third countries.”

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen explained that Washington was thus “increasing the risk for financial institutions dealing with Russia’s war economy and eliminating paths for evasion.”

Estimated by the Department of the Treasury to impact more than $100 million in trade between Russia and its foreign partners, the latest US sanctions package is one of the largest since the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict.

The measures compelled the Moscow Exchange to suspend all trade in the US dollar and euro last week.

Kremlin dismisses Kiev’s ‘peace summit’ expectations

17 Jun, 2024

Russia’s conditions for peace with Ukraine remain unchanged from those outlined by President Vladimir Putin last week, regardless of Kiev’s expectations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

Last weekend, Switzerland hosted the Ukraine ‘peace summit’, to which Russia was not invited at Kiev’s request. Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said he wants the next event to include a delegation from Moscow ready to sign a truce.

”The approach of the Russian side is transparent, consistent and well-known, including to Mr. Kuleba,” Peskov said. Putin detailed this last Friday, he added.

In a keynote foreign policy speech last week, Putin said he would order a ceasefire as soon as Kiev announces the withdrawal of troops from all territory claimed by Moscow and vows not to seek NATO membership. The Ukrainian government has rejected the proposal, calling it an ultimatum.

The gathering in Switzerland, as envisioned by Ukrainian officials, was meant to formulate a “just” resolution of the Ukraine conflict, which Kiev and its supporters would then present to Russia to accept under pressure.

The final joint statement was signed by less than 80 nations, plus three separate bodies of the EU, the human rights organization Council of Europe, and the breakaway Serbian region of Kosovo. Most of the signatories were already following the US’ lead in supporting Kiev. Major players of the Global South, including China, India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Indonesia, and others, either boycotted the conference or did not sign the communique.

The document did not include many of the points in the ‘peace formula’ advocated by Kiev, such as the demand for Russia to pay war reparations and the creation of a tribunal for alleged war crimes. The three key articles approved in Switzerland urge nuclear safety, food security, and an exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine. The statement also calls for “dialogue between all parties” to achieve peace.

Moscow dismissed the conference as irrelevant before it was held, as no serious results could be achieved without Russia’s participation, according to senior Russian officials. Given the situation on the front line, Ukraine will receive progressively worse terms with time and could end up losing its statehood, they have warned.

Pakistan Celebrates Eid Ul Adha In Solidarity With Oppressed Gazans

June 17, 2024

The Pakistani nation is celebrating Eid ul Adha on Monday in solidarity with its brethren in Gaza who are being oppressed by Israel as thousands, including women and children, have lost their lives in the months-long war.

At least 37,337 Palestinians have been killed and 85,299 injured in Israel's military offensive on Gaza since October 7, the Gaza health ministry said, with thousands more dead feared unrecovered under the rubble.

Despite growing international pressure for a ceasefire, an agreement to halt the fighting still appears distant, more than eight months since the war began.

In their Eid messages, Pakistan’s top leadership expressed solidarity with the war-torn nation as well as people in Indian Illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir and sought redressal to their worries.

While Muslims prayed for their brothers and sisters in the Gulf nation, they also sacrificed animals — goats, cows, camels, etc — to commemorate the sacrifice by Prophet Ibrahim (AS).

To ensure that the religious festival witnesses no untoward situation, security has also been tightened across the country, with thousands of police personnel deployed across the country.

'Wish for peace'

In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended warm greetings to the Pakistani nation and Muslims around the world on the auspicious occasion of Eid ul Adha.

In a message, he said the festival commemorates the unwavering commitment and readiness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his beloved son Prophet Ismail (AS) without hesitation, as commanded by Allah.

"The day reminds us of the importance of sacrificing what is most dear to us in the way of Allah. It teaches us the value of selflessness and devotion to Allah."

The prime minister said the day also serves as an occasion to unite the people and foster the bonds of brotherhood and fraternity as well as to look after the less fortunate amongst us and make them part of our collective celebration.

"Whilst our wish is for peace, prosperity and love to prevail all over the world during Eid ul-Adha, we are also watching with sadness and concern [about] other ongoing conflicts and violence in many countries worldwide. We should not forget the sacrifices and sufferings of the people of Palestine and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir," he added.

On this Eid day, he said, "we pray for our Palestinian and Kashmiri brothers and sisters who are bravely facing brutal foreign occupation but remain steadfast in their struggle to achieve their right of self-determination".

"May the spirit of Eid ul Adha, with its message of solidarity and unity, bring prosperity, success and happiness to the entire Muslim ummah," he prayed.

'Lesson'

For his part, President Asif Ali Zardari also extended his warm felicitations to the nation and the Muslim Ummah on the blessed occasion.

In a message, he prayed to Allah to grant His blessings and happiness to the Muslim world and Pakistan on this auspicious day.

When Allah put Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Ismail (AS) through trials, both of them bowed their heads to obtain the pleasure of Allah, he said.

"It is a lesson for us that the key to success is to remain firm in the situation of trials and tests and to obey Allah Almighty."

President Zardari urged the nation to reaffirm their commitment to the values of brotherhood, sacrifice, and selflessness on this occasion.

He encouraged everyone to share the joy of Eid with those around them, especially those who are unable to celebrate due to financial constraints.

"I prayed to Allah Almighty to shower His blessings and mercy upon the entire Muslim ummah, particularly Pakistan", he added.

In a separate statement, the Armed Forces of Pakistan, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), and services chiefs extended their warm felicitations to all Pakistanis on the occasion of Eid.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR): "This sacred event embodies the spirit of sacrifice for the greater good. On this auspicious day, we are indebted to our martyrs and ghazis for the independence and peace which prevail in the country, and pay tribute to their ultimate sacrifices."

It further said: "May Allah Almighty continue to bestow His blessings upon Pakistan and protect it from the nefarious designs of its adversaries, Ameen."

Govt warns of clamping down on PTI over 'anti-state' social media campaign

June 16, 2024

ISLAMABAD: As the proposal for talks between political rivals Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the incumbent ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has failed to materialise so far, the government has warned elements involved in running "anti-state campaign" on social media of action against them.

Federal government's spokesperson on legal affairs Barrister Aqeel Malik on Sunday said that the state would clamp on all those trying to damage Pakistan's ties with friendly countries through anti-state campaigns.

He urged the PTI to quit its "anti-state activities and propaganda," and hold dialogue with the government on political issues to mull over solutions instead of damaging the nation’s interest at global forums.

The spokesperson stated this while addressing a press conference to brief the media on the political party’s anti-state activities abroad.

Barrister Malik said that there was no precedent to PTI’s "enmity as it was perpetrating anti-Pakistan legislation in foreign countries".

“Pakistan is an independent country and does not take dictation from any nation. We want friendly relations with all nations.

"However, a concentrated smear campaign against Pakistan in foreign countries that started after the 2022 vote of no confidence which mounted the anti-Pakistan propaganda,” he said, adding that the PTI had hired lobbyists and PR firms to promote anti-Pakistan campaign abroad.

Resolution number 901 tabled in November 2023 in US Congress by Congressmen McCormick had all its links to PTI, he claimed while adding, “all anti-Pakistan legislation is done on the behest of PTI and overseas Pakistani diaspora who have strong affiliation with this party are being misused for this clandestine motive of PTI."

He said that 65 congressmen wrote a letter to the US Secretary of Defence to prioritise the promotion of protection of human rights and democracy in Pakistan, in May 2023.

"11 congressmen wrote a letter to US Secretary of State in November 2023 to suspend US assistance to Pakistan. 31 congressmen wrote to the US Secretary of State and President to not recognise the government of Pakistan formed after February 2024,” the spokesperson noted.

He underscored that all these tactics were done by PTI and it was hiring lobbying and PR firms to strongly promote anti-Pakistan propaganda.

“PTI is running a malicious concentrated campaign against Pakistan. The amendments being moved by the PTI-influenced House of Representatives are all linked to anti-state and country enemy elements as India also has a major role in it and they are joining PTI to work on anti Pakistan narrative,” Barrister Malik said.

He reiterated that the state and government of Pakistan were fully aware of the campaign and its perpetrators.

“You (PTI) cannot do opposition against the state as by doing so you are undermining it and there is no acceptability and tolerance for it," he added

Malik said that no political party was above Pakistan; let’s make it crystal clear and no anti-state agenda and narrative will be allowed by the state,” he added.

He urged the PTI to think about the country and motherland as it had joined hands with country enemies and set out on an anti-country agenda for its political motives.

“PTI is becoming a source of humiliation for the country at international forums. You are Pakistani and we all are Pakistanis. We have to work for the country. Nobody is stopping you from the politics but this negative and inimical political would not be allowed,” he added.

Sanaullah says Fazl unlikely to be influenced by 'disruptive' group

June 17, 2024

As per sources on June 10, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and JUI-F, erstwhile rivals in the political arena, seemed to be on the brink of burying the hatchet and joining hands against the government.

It was revealed that the former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan gave his word to address the concerns of Fazl, while a three-member committee has also been formed and tasked with ironing out differences between the two parties.

He urged the nation to pray for the country to avoid any further crises.

Speaking to the media in Faisalabad after Eid prayers on Monday, Sanaullah assured that the Parliament would pass the budget by June 30, with thorough discussions before its approval.

He mentioned that while the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) conditions were stringent, assistance from friendly countries has provided some relief.

The senior PML-N leader expressed hope that this would be the final IMF programme, allowing Pakistan to create its budget independently in the future.

Sanaullah highlighted efforts to reduce government expenses, noting that the premier has given a one-month timeframe after which he will address the nation.

The advisor also noted that the country's economy is on a path to stability, with a reduction in the prices of essential goods. He emphasised that the benefits of economic improvements are reaching the common man and pointed out the significant decrease in petroleum product prices implemented by the government.

It is reported that allegations of election rigging in the February 8 general elections seem to have brought PTI and JUI-F closer together, surprising many who had not anticipated such a thaw in their relations. Meetings between delegations from both parties have been reported several times.

Commenting on the situation in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Gen Munir reiterated Pakistan’s principled stance, aligned with relevant United Nations resolutions.

The COAS condemned India's ongoing oppression and brutalities against Kashmiris and noted that New Delhi, after the recently concluded elections, has been attempting to mask its aggression and victimization of the Kashmiri people with false propaganda and provocations against Pakistan.

Such tactics, including manufacturing false flag operations, have become a routine political tool of India, he noted.

"Pakistan has always supported peace and stability in the region; however, any provocation or violation of Pakistan’s territorial sovereignty will be met with a swift and resolute response, with the full support of the nation," the army chief added.

Earlier in the day, rime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended warm greetings to the Pakistani nation and Muslims around the world on Eid and recalled the violence in various areas around the world namely IIOJ&K and Palestine.

On this Eid day, he said, "We pray for our Palestinian and Kashmiri brothers and sisters who are bravely facing brutal foreign occupation but remain steadfast in their struggle to achieve their right of self-determination".

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari urged the nation to reaffirm their commitment to the values of brotherhood, sacrifice, and selflessness on this occasion.

COAS celebrates Eidul Azha with troops stationed at LoC

June 17, 2024

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Asim Munir on Monday visited the Haji Pir sector of the Line of Control (LOC) to celebrate Eidul Azha with the troops stationed there, a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations read.

According to the military’s media wing, the COAS offered Eid prayers with officers and soldiers at the front line, praying for Pakistan’s peace and prosperity. He also paid tribute to the martyrs of Pakistan.

Addressing the troops, General Asim commended their dedication, high morale and commitment to defending their homeland. “As soldiers, we take pride in celebrating such festivities away from our homes and loved ones while on duty, ensuring the security of our country and fellow citizens,” he said.

Discussing the indigenous freedom struggle of the Kashmiri people in Indian-held Kashmir, the COAS reiterated Pakistan’s principled stance, aligned with relevant UN resolutions.

He condemned India’s ongoing oppression and brutalities against Kashmiris, noting that post-election, India has been attempting to mask its activity in the region with “false propaganda” and “provocations against Pakistan”.

“Such tactics, including manufacturing false flag operations, have become a routine political tool of India,” the statement read.

“Pakistan has always supported peace and stability in the region; however, any provocation or violation of Pakistan’s territorial sovereignty will be met with a swift and resolute response, with the full support of the nation, InshaAllah,” the COAS concluded.

‘Spirit of sacrifice’

Earlier in the day, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for promoting the spirit of sacrifice, brotherhood and selflessness as Pakistan celebrated Eidul Azha.

The day started with special prayers held at mosques, Eidgahs, and grounds across the country for the progress and security of the country, state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported.

During Eid sermons, ulema highlighted the significance of the philosophy of the great sacrifice offered by prophets.

The president offered Eid prayers at Zardari House in Nawabshah alongside Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and other PPP leaders, the party said in a post on X. PM Shehbaz offered Eid prayers at Model Town in Lahore, Radio Pakistan said.

In his message, President Zardari highlighted the significance of Eidul Azha and encouraged everyone to share the joy of festivities with those around them, especially those unable to celebrate due to financial constraints.

“We should not forget the sacrifices and sufferings of the people of Palestine and [held Kashmir]. On this Eid day, we pray for our Palestinian and Kashmiri brothers and sisters who are bravely facing brutal foreign occupation but remain steadfast in their struggle to achieve their right of self-determination,” he said.

On the other hand, PM Shehbaz said the day served as an occasion to unite the people and foster the bonds of brotherhood and fraternity.

“On this day, we pray for our Palestinian and Kashmiri brothers and sisters who are bravely facing brutal foreign occupation but remain steadfast in their struggle to achieve their right of self-determination,” he stated.

“May we all embrace the true essence of this auspicious day, fostering unity and embodying the spirit of sacrifice,” the premier added in a post on X.

Separately, the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and services chiefs extended warm felicitations to all Pakistanis, according to a statement released by the Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR).

“This sacred event embodies the spirit of sacrifice for the greater good. On this auspicious day, we are indebted to our martyrs and ghazis for the independence and peace which prevail in the country, and pay tribute to their ultimate sacrifices,” it said.

“May Allah Almighty continue to bestow His blessings upon Pakistan and protect it from the nefarious designs of its adversaries, Ameen,” the ISPR added.

In his message, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari extended the heartiest felicitations to all Pakistanis and the Muslim Ummah worldwide on the occasion of Eidul Azha.

“May the spirit of Eidul Azha illuminate our hearts and guide us towards building a future where peace and brotherhood prevail,” he said.

In a post on X, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan wished the nation Eidul Azha “despite challenges”.

“Sending comfort, strength, and hope for a better future with solidarity and prayers for justice and peace for those suffering,” he said.

Disposal of offal

Meanwhile, the government has issued an awareness message requesting people to ensure the safe disposal of offal and remains of sacrificial animals at designated places to avoid bird-aircraft collision risk.

In a message reported by Radio Pakistan, the government requested the public to avoid discarding offal in areas around the airports as it leads to the gathering of scavengers and birds that may collide with aircraft and lead to a serious tragedy.

It urged the nation to celebrate Eidul Azha with cleanliness and responsibility through the proper disposal of sacrificial animals.

Speaking to the media after Eid prayers earlier today, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board would collect waste and offal from door to door and urged the public to keep the city clean.

Separately, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has sought cleanliness and better security during Eid days, directing the administration to make arrangements for the same down to the tehsil level.

Afghans spend Eid in poverty after fleeing Pakistan

June 17, 2024

Seven months since fleeing Pakistan out of fear of deportation, Jan Mohammad marked the Eidul Azha holiday on Monday by struggling to feed his family, still living in a tent in Afghanistan in the border province of Nangarhar.

“We are spending Eid as if we were in prison,” the 30-year-old father of six told AFP.

“We have absolutely no money. We are still grateful to Allah that we are alive but sometimes we regret that as well. We can’t do anything. This year, and this Eid, we became fully bankrupt.” He and his family crossed from Pakistan at the end of last year, not long after a deadline set by Islamabad for Afghans without legal right to stay in the country to leave.

Hundreds of thousands of Afghans have hurriedly packed up their belongings to start fresh in their homeland, a place many of them had never seen before, in the months since the November 1, 2023 deadline.

But months later, many have still not found their feet.

Mohammad and his family were living in a tent encampment in the Moye Mubarak area of Nangarhar with other recently returned Afghan families.

He worked as a trainer at a sports club in Pakistan but is now jobless, unable to provide sufficient food for his family, let alone take part in Eidul Azha traditions of buying new clothes or a sheep for the ritual sacrifice or gathering with extended family and friends.

“My children don’t have proper food to eat or clothes to wear (for Eid), or shoes, while the children in the nearby villages have good clothes and shoes. My children want the same things. It is very difficult but we are helpless,” Mohammad said.

“It breaks my heart, I sit in a corner at home and cry.” In a nearby tent, Sang Bibi is also holding on by a thread. Where other families were buying new clothes for Eid, she and her six children can rarely wash and beg for hand-me-downs to wear.

“We even beg for the clothes of [the] dead,” the 60-year-old widow, the sole breadwinner for her family, told AFP.

“We have been in a terrible situation these past two Eids,” she said, referring to Eidul Fitr, which fell at the end of the holy month of Ramazan in April this year.

No ‘bread to eat’

The influx of returnees into Afghanistan from both Pakistan and Iran came as the war-ravaged country grapples with economic, climate and humanitarian crises.

UN refugee agency UNHCR said last year that Afghans make up the third-largest group of displaced people globally, with around eight million Afghans living across 103 countries as of 2023.

The Taliban government, which took power almost three years ago, provided some support for the returnees but struggled to cope with the surge.

“We want the government to help us by providing shelter,” said Sana Gul, who has lived in a tent with her husband and their two daughters since coming from Pakistan.

In the days ahead of Eid, markets were bustling with shoppers buying sweets and food for the holiday, with many families sharing meat with poorer relations during the holiday.

But having spent years, if not their whole lives, abroad, fleeing Afghanistan’s successive conflicts, many returnees have few networks to support them.

“We don’t even have bread to eat,” said Gul’s husband Safar.

June 17, 2024

KURRAM: At least four members of a family were killed when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in the Kurram tribal district on Sunday, while police claimed to have gunned down a militant commander during an operation in LakkiMarwat.

A vehicle was caught up in the IED explosion in Kurram’sTeendo area as it was passing through Korram Road.

As a result, four people travelling in the vehicle were killed and another was injured, with the vehicle being destroyed in the explosion.

The victims were identified as Saeedullah, his son Hasnain, brother Hanifullah, and relative Zakria. The locals said that the victims were travelling to Sadda bazaar from central Kurram to buy an animal for Eidul Azha.

‘Militant commander’ killed in LakkiMarwat operation, police say

District emergency officer of Rescue 1122 Ghulam Murtaza said that the rescuers reached the spot soon after receiving information about the IED explosion and shifted the deceased and the injured to the hospital. District police officer Nisar Ahmad Khan said that the police had launched an investigation into the incident.

In a separate incident, two brothers were shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Sateen area of lower Kurram. The victims were identified as Habib and Shereen.

LakkiMarwat operation

Meanwhile, a local militant commander was killed in an intelligence-based operation in Malang adda on Saturday night, said police. According to a police official, the operation was jointly carried out by the local police and the Counter Terrorism Department on information about the presence of militants in the remits of SeraiGambila police station.

The official claimed that the police had received “credible reports” about the presence of seven to eight militants in the locality with the intention of committing a subversive act. He said that when law enforcement personnel reached the area, the militants shot at them with automatic weapons, triggering a gun battle. “The exchange of fire between the law enforcers and militants continued for half an hour and later police found the body of militant commander during a search operation,” he maintained.

He identified the killed militant as Waliullah, a resident of BachkanAhmadzai, and said that the commander was affiliated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Teepo group. The police official said the slain commander was also wanted by the CTD in Bannu and D.I. Khan in multiple attacks.

Singer Malkoo 'barred' from travelling to UK to perform at concerts

June 17, 2024

LONDON: British-Pakistani businessman Liaqat Malik said that he has lost over £200,000 after the acclaimed singer Malkoo was stopped from leaving Pakistan on Eid day to perform at several shows Malik had organsied across the UK.

Malik had booked the folk-popular Punjabi singer Malkoo to perform at venues in London and outside starting June 19, 2024, but Malkoo was first stopped at the Lahore airport on Sunday (June 16) and then again on Monday (June 17).

Singer Sara Altaf was also supposed to accompany the singer for the tour but she has not come to the UK as the tour was cancelled.

Malkoo — Muhammad Ashraf Malik — told Geo News over the phone he was not aware why his name had been added to the stop list.

"I have sung songs for everyone. The whole country loves me for my singing. The airport staff was very respectful and told me I am on the stop list. I have sung many songs but Nak Da Koka became a big hit. It just happened. I respect everyone. I would request the authorities to look into my case and let me travel. This kind of discrimination is not nice."

Malik had also invited PTI’s lawmaker Sher Afzal Marwat who was able to travel and arrived in London on Monday afternoon. He spoke at the press conference with Liaqat Malik near Heathrow Airport and condemned the action against Malkoo that led to the cancellation of concerts.

Marwat said the authorities have stooped to a new low by stopping Malkoo from performing in the UK.

"Eid of many people in the UK has been spoiled. Malkoo has the right to sing for anyone. There are singers who have sung for politicians from all parties — there’s nothing wrong with it. This is shameful that a singer has been punished in this way."

Marwat appealed to the authorities to allow Malkoo to travel abroad.

Malik condemned the government’s action to stop Malkoo and Sara Altaf from singing at the UK concerts.

Malik said: "This is a huge loss to me personally and to the community and Malkoo’s fans who were so eager to attend his shows. All our shows were sold out, I had made all payments in advance. I have lost over £200,000. It’s a complete loss. There is no way I can recover the money."

Just before the elections in February this year, Malkoo’s two songs became instant hits — Qaidi #804 and Nak Da Koka — in support of PTI’s imprisoned founder and former prime minister Imran Khan.

It’s understood that some quarters have not liked the political message of these songs.

The organisers said they would re-arrange Malkoo's concert if his name is removed from the stop list.

HRW Dy. Director:UN Ignores Its Own Rapporteur To Appease Taliban

June 18, 2024

Heather Barr, the deputy director of the Women’s Rights Division at Human Rights Watch, stated that Richard Bennett’s new report on the “shocking and increasing harassment of Afghan women by the Taliban” is clear and critical.

Barr said that the UN had ignored its special rapporteur’s report to gain cooperation from the Taliban.

On Monday, Barr wrote on X that the UN removed the issue of Afghan women from the Doha meetings.

Richard Bennett, the UN’s special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, will present his latest report on the human rights situation in Afghanistan to the UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday, June 18.

Heather Barr expressed disappointment that the UN overall does not listen to its special rapporteur on human rights.

She added that Bennett’s report not only documents serious human rights violations in Afghanistan but also suggests practical steps for countries to hold the Taliban accountable for these violations.

Despite this comprehensive report on widespread human rights abuses under Taliban rule, Barr noted that the UN granted concessions to the Taliban for participating in the third round of Doha talks.

Barr mentioned that these concessions included excluding women from the third round of Doha meetings and removing women’s rights and human rights issues from the agenda.

Richard Bennett, the UN human rights rapporteur for Afghanistan, termed gender apartheid the most accurate for women’s oppression in Afghanistan, urging governments to recognize it as a crime against humanity and avoid legitimizing Taliban authorities.

He emphasized that the systematic oppression of Afghan women should be a major topic in international discussions about Afghanistan.

Iran blames occupying forces for causing Afghanistan’s woes

June 18, 2024

Ali Bagheri, the acting Foreign Minister of Iran, has emphasized that the Afghan people, in cooperation with neighboring and regional countries, are the primary decision-makers in their country.

He asserted that they [the people] do not allow external actors with a history of destructive interference, who are responsible for the current problems, to intervene.

Late on Sunday, June 16, he shared a message from X on his social media platform about his phone conversation with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting Foreign Minister of the Taliban.

In the message from the interim Foreign Minister of Iran, it was stated that “the people of Afghanistan are the main decision-makers of their country in cooperation with neighboring and regional countries and do not allow external actors, who have a history of destructive interference and are responsible for the current problems, to intervene.”

He stressed that Iran, in cooperation and coordination with the Taliban in Afghanistan, will strive to maintain regional stability and security.

According to this Islamic Republic official, “Islamic countries must lead in supporting the Palestinian people and confronting the crimes of the occupying regime.”

Previously, the interim Foreign Minister of Iran had also blamed “foreign interventions” and “occupiers” for Afghanistan’s underdevelopment and economic problems.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the country has faced a dire humanitarian crisis. Millions of Afghans are suffering from severe food shortages, lack of medical supplies, and widespread poverty. The situation is exacerbated by the country’s isolation, as it remains unrecognized by the international community.

Despite this isolation, the Taliban receives 40 million USD weekly from the US. This financial support contrasts sharply with the lack of international recognition and aid, highlighting the complex and often contradictory dynamics at play in the region. The humanitarian needs of the Afghan people continue to grow as the crisis deepens.

TTP declares three-day Eid ceasefire in Pakistan

June 18, 2024

The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) declared a three-day ceasefire in Pakistan for Eid al-Adha.

The TTP stated that this ceasefire was in response to the requests of the Pakistani people but warned that their fighters would defend themselves if security forces took any action.

The TTP announced this ceasefire amid a recent increase in attacks by the group in various parts of Pakistan.

The Pakistani government and military blame the TTP for orchestrating terrorist attacks against border forces within Pakistan and for the recent attack on Chinese nationals in the country.

Pakistani officials allege that the Taliban’s support for the TTP has led to increased militant attacks since the Taliban took control of  Kabul. This accusation has strained relations between the two countries.

Amidst the dire situation in Afghanistan, Pakistan has begun forcibly deporting Afghan refugees, worsening the humanitarian crisis. These deportations have added to the tension between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The increased militant attacks and the forced deportation of Afghan refugees have escalated tensions, complicating diplomatic relations. Both countries are struggling to address these security and humanitarian challenges.

Afghan migrants like Soheila: Eid in exile feels strange

June 18, 2024

Written By: TabasumNasiry

Afghanistan has been among the countries with the highest number of refugees and migrants globally for several decades. Soheila is one of the thousands of Afghan migrants who have celebrated Eid in a foreign land over the past two years. According to Soheila, for migrants, Eid feels strange, and they only celebrate it as spectators.

Soheila is one of the Afghan migrant girls in Pakistan who has been living there for two years, hoping to enter European countries. In a conversation with Khaama Press, she says that celebrating Eid in migration is never as pleasant as being surrounded by loved ones inside the country.

Soheila states that she feels like a “stranger” in the land of migration and hopes to return to her country one day and celebrate Eid alongside her family and friends as she did in the past.

She adds, “All migrants experience a period of emotional trauma due to being away from their country, family, and friends. People’s hearts and souls suffer in migration. I always wished for security in my country to share in the joys that I can only see from a distance.”

While many migrants experience different conditions during migration, some psychologists have termed this state as “migration trauma,” which involves traumatic and stressful experiences such as the forced departure from home and country, war, political or religious persecution, violence, separation from family and friends, and racial and cultural discrimination.

However, in a recent report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), it was stated that Afghanistan has the largest population of displaced people, accounting for one-third of the world’s refugees.

Ajmal, another Afghan migrant in Germany, recently migrated to this country. According to him, Eid days during migration are like ordinary days, with only a few people visiting each other.

Ajmal adds that Eid has no festive atmosphere in the land of migration, and sometimes he celebrates it through social media and occasionally meets with some friends and relatives.

According to the UNHCR report, Afghanistan has 6.4 million refugees worldwide.

Meanwhile, the process of deporting Afghan migrants from Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey has significantly increased in recent months, with thousands returning to their country either “forcibly or voluntarily.”

This comes amid a dire humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, with over 23 million people in need of aid, a lack of job opportunities, restrictions on women’s education and employment, and the persecution of former Afghan army members.

TengkuZafrul noted that the programme would also deepen cooperations in robotics, entrepreneur development, innovation and startup, as well as research and development in agriculture and primary industries.

In addition to the economic and trade cooperation, he said two government-to-government memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were expected to be signed during the visit, including a MoU on strengthening investment cooperation in the digital economy as well as a MoU on promoting investment cooperation in green development.

Malaysia seeks BRICS membership, cites strategic geopolitical importance: Anwar Ibrahim

18-06- 2024

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that Malaysia has decided to apply for membership in the BRICS group and will soon start filing the official paperwork.

In an interview with the Chinese news outlet Guancha on Sunday, Anwar said Malaysia has established its policy and has decided to proceed with the formal application process set to begin shortly.

“We have made our policy clear and we have made our decision. We will start the formal process soon. We are waiting for the final result and the feedback from the South African government,“ he was quoted as saying.

He said the country’s geographical position is a key factor as Malaysia’s potential membership in BRICS holds strategic importance due to its location along the Malacca Strait, an important shipping route linking the Pacific and Indian Oceans between Malaysia and Indonesia’s Sumatra island.

BRICS, founded in 2006, currently comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In January, the organisation admitted Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as new members.

Earlier this month, Russian Ambassador to China Igor Morgulov said that approximately 30 countries have expressed interest in joining BRICS, including Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam in Malaysia’s neighbourhood.

Anwar also mentioned he had raised the subject during a recent meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

“The West wants to control the discourse in the world, but we can no longer accept it because they are no longer a colonial power and independent countries should be free to express themselves.

“The world is no longer unipolar, and the rise of BRICS and China has offered a glimmer of hope that there are checks and balances in the world,“ he said.

The 2024 BRICS summit is scheduled for October in Kazan, Russia, with Moscow leading the organisation since January.

Malaysia, China likely to discuss wide range of issues to enhance economic collaboration - Experts

18-06- 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and China are likely to discuss issues focusing on innovation and inclusiveness, alongside green energy and commodities to enhance investments and economic collaboration during the visit of Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Malaysia, say experts.

Li, who assumed office as China’s premier in March last year, is scheduled to arrive in Malaysia later today to kick-off his three-day official visit in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China.

Li’s visit is at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

On the meeting of the two leaders, Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) executive director Dr Anthony Dass expected both nations’ focus to be on innovation and inclusiveness, which would support the MADANI framework and further strengthen the trade, investments and services relationship.

“Looking at the MADANI framework, China could play an important role as our framework aligns with the values and principles advocated in 2013 under China’s Community Shared Principle,” he told Bernama.

Anthony said while Malaysia’s focus is to improve its competitiveness, fiscal position, debt levels, service delivery and governance, discussions between the two leaders are expected to centre around these areas for the benefit of both nations.

Malaysia-China Friendship Association president Datuk Abdul Majid Ahmad Khan said the two countries have been forging healthy and dynamic relations over the past five decades, evidenced by the strong trade performance recorded over the years.

He said that apart from further consolidating existing links and identifying new sectors for cooperation, Anwar and Li are anticipated to facilitate the growth of Malaysian commodities, such as palm oil and durian-related products as well as enhance technology cooperation, which has been on the rise in recent years.

“Other new areas of focus may include aerospace, communications and green energy sectors,“ he said.

China has been Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years since 2009. Last year, total trade with China was valued at RM450.84 billion (US$98.80 billion), contributing 17.1 per cent to Malaysia’s global trade.

Discussions on renewable energy on the cards

Echoing Abdul Majid’s views, Anthony said as both Malaysia and China are investing in clean technologies like solar, wind and hydro power, discussions on renewable energy are likely to be held to harness the green technology besides merely focusing on technology.

“Such discussions will assist us to reduce greenhouse gas emission, address climate change and unlock new opportunities,” he said.

He also anticipated that electrical and electronics (E&E) related trade and investment issues would be put on the table, as developments in the segment would have economic spillovers across industries like E&E and electric vehicles (EVs) -- a key strategy in the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030).

“Other areas of discussions would be on data centre, infrastructure, information and communication technology (ICT), digital related services, connectivity, rare earth, new EVs and future growth areas,” he said.

Malaysia, China to further deepen economic cooperation

Abdul Majid said that over the years, Malaysia and China have been utilising three main platforms, namely the Five-Year Programme for Economic and Trade Cooperation, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement to advance and deepen their economic collaboration.

“During Premier Li’s visit, the contents of these platforms are expected to be further enriched to deepen the cooperation between the two countries,” he said.

Taking the BRI for example, he said new sectors, such as skill training and areas that could directly impact people’s living standards, could be included in the initiative.

Others included greater emphasis on people-to-people exchanges among think-tanks, media and cultural institutions, he said.

Abdul Majid believed that Li’s visit will further strengthen the existing ties between Malaysia and China.

“There is much goodwill on both sides and a commitment to further deepen relations.

“Given the past remarkable achievements and the mutual benefits from the relationship, we can be optimistic that Malaysia-China relations will be further elevated and deepened in the future,” he said.

Nonetheless, Anthony cautioned that the changes in global and regional dynamics, including shifts in global economic power, geopolitical realignments and regional security concerns could influence Malaysia-China relationship.

“For instance, the export-oriented industries like E&E and solar could face potential impact from the geopolitical tension between the United States and China.

“Here, we need to focus on global market diversification to avoid concentration risk,” he said.

On issues such as territorial claims in the South China Sea, he said Malaysia, like other Southeast Asian nations, should continue to balance its economic interests with China while safeguarding its sovereignty and stability.

PNM Distributes Qurban Sacrificial Animals in Remote Areas

June 17, 2024

Jakarta. Financing firm PermodalanNasional Madani PNM or distributed its sacrificial animal for Eid al-Adha to remote areas in Aceh, Palembang, Lampung, Garut, Serang, Banjarmasin, Purwokerto, Solo, Mataram, and Makassar.

According to PNM president director AriefMulyadi, this year's distribution focused on remote areas, especially those with high stunting rates.

"The momentum of this year's sacrifice, apart from being a form of worship on Eid al-Adha, is also a form of PNM's commitment to supporting the zero stunting program in Indonesia," he said.

The qurban distribution is also PNM's way of expressing gratitude for having served the country for 25 years, especially in empowering Indonesia's ultra micro enterprises. This also makes a great opportunity for PNM to give back in remote areas that also run the company's flagship MembinaEkonomiKeluarga Sejahtera (Mekaar) initiative. PNM distributed the sacrificial animals to the smaller mosques in the said regions.

Arief thanked the PNM Mekaar customers who have entrusted PNM to provide assistance and empowerment to women-owned ultra-micro businesses. As well as the account officers who have worked hard to provide assistance in these areas.

"I hope that the sacrifices from PNM can continue to foster the hopes of ultra-micro fighters, both customers and account officer friends who sacrifice every day through incredibly difficult paths," he said.

Vice President Hails Display of Religious Tolerance during Eid al-Adha

June 17, 2024

Jakarta. Vice President Ma’ruf Amin praised non-Muslim communities for participating in Eid al-Adha celebrations by donating sacrificial animals on Monday.

He performed the Eid prayer at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, where he was informed that the nearby Katedral Church and other community groups such as Indonesians of Chinese descent had donated live cattle to the mosque.

"It appears that the Feast of the Sacrifice doesn’t involve Muslims only. The Imam just told me that many non-Muslim communities also contributed live cattle in a display of social solidarity,” Ma’ruf said at the Istiqlal Mosque.

We are grateful that social solidarity still finds its place in this nation. We have to preserve and enhance this tradition," he added.

Ma’ruf himself donated a 1.1-ton cow to the mosque and also handed another on behalf of President Joko Widodo, who celebrated Eid in Semarang, Central Java.

Their donations were received by Mosque Imam Nasaruddin Umar.
