What The Misidentification Of One Mausoleum And One
Mosque In The Heart Of Delhi Says About Our Approach To Heritage

---------------
To the south-west of Humayun’s tomb in Delhi stand two
domed Mughal monuments from the 16th century CE – one mausoleum and one mosque.
Few visitors to Humayun’s tomb venture in this direction, even though the
structures have recently been restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.
Signboards, brochures, and web pages describe them as the Afsarwala complex, built
in honour of a nobleman, an Afsar.
Eminent scholars of Mughal architectural history such
as Ebba Koch and George Michell have subscribed to this nomenclature. So has
the respected art historian Subhash Parihar, who has written the only focussed
academic inquiry on the structures.
In his study published in Marg in 1998, Parihar
suggested that the word afsar was derived from the Turkic afshar, referring to
a Transcaucasian tribe, four elite members of which had been appointed by
Safavid ruler Shah Tahmasp in 1544 to assist with Humayun’s scheme of
recapturing subcontinental India from the Suri dynasty. As only three of them
are known to have returned to their homeland, Parihar suggested that the
complex was likely to have been sponsored by the fourth, Abdul Fateh Sultan
Afshar.
While there certainly are plausible elements in this
theory, there is mounting evidence to suggest that it should be reassessed. It
seems likely that the Afsarwala complex was actually commissioned by a woman –
that it did not have a patron but a “matron”.
The sustained institutional endorsement of such
misattribution is a reflection of current politics where public funds are used
ineffectively, new research is not prioritised and structures of significance
are distanced from communities by failing to to describe their significance
accurately.
In addition, while heritage – particularly Mughal – is
routinely used to humiliate vulnerable minorities, the opportunities they offer
to correct their historic misperceptions are squandered.
Given contemporary codes of hierarchy and propriety,
it is not clear why a sub-imperial foreigner would be permitted to construct so
close to the Emperor’s tomb, and in a landscape that also includes buildings
erected by and at times entombing bodies of Mughal imperial women such as Haji
Begum, Mehr Bano, Bu Halima and perhaps also Maham Begum.
Second, if the mosque and tomb had been imagined
together as a complex and commissioned by the same individual, why do they
appear stylistically so disparate?
The octagonal tomb is clad entirely in stone,
ornamented by marble inlay and sparse yet refined red sandstone carving. The
triple-bayed mosque, on the other hand, relies on more modest decorative
features in painted stucco. It is likely that a band of blue ceramic tiles also
ran along the parapet of the mosque originally – a common element in Akbar-era
architectural vocabulary.
That is indicated by the hand-painted aquatint of the
site that emerged from the studio of the British artists Thomas and William
Daniell in 1801. Their print also suggests that the structure was originally
provided with 18 guldastas (floral finials, usually in the form of a miniature
minaret) articulating its corners, of which only one partially remains.
The same image also shows a low wall projecting
perpendicularly from the mosque’s facade to spatially segregate it from the
tomb. This once again reinforces the possibility of the units of the complex as
being built independently.
The Tomb and Mosque as depicted by the Daniells in
View at Delhi, Near the Mausoleum of the Emperor Humaioon, Plate 19 of Oriental
Scenery Part 3. Credit: Thomas Daniell, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.
Within the tomb, cenotaphs (empty tombs in honour of a
person whose remains are actually buried in another place, typically below the
plinth at ground level for Mughals) and epigraphic records strengthen the
assertion that these structures had female sponsors. It is likely that the
primary cenotaph commemorates a woman because it is finished on top with a flat
takhti (tablet) and not the raised qalamdan (pen-case) usually reserved for
men.
Based on the numbers 974 that appears within the text
and is, as per Islamic funerary tradition, the Hijri calendar date marking the
death, she is someone who died in between 1566-’67 in the Common Era.
From this date, the materiality and stylistic
expression of the tomb, and its proximity to that of Humayun, it may be deduced
that this was erected for an imperial matriarch of his generation. Although the
exact identity of the deceased remains to be established, she was probably
close both in relationship and rank with the matron of the mosque adjacent to
it. Considerably more information is available about the mosque and its
matronage.

The Return Of 'Razakars' To Bangladesh Political
Discourse After 53 Years
by Samiran Mishra
July 21, 2024
The protests, which began late last month, reached a
boiling point earlier this week.
-------------
New Delhi: Violence in Bangladesh has left over 130
dead as students demand reforms to a quota system governing the allocation of
government jobs in the country. The protests intensified following Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina's controversial remarks, where she labelled the
protestors as "Razakars". This term, historically loaded and carrying
a negative connotation, harks back to the East Pakistani volunteer force that
opposed the creation of Bangladesh as a sovereign nation during its 1971 War of
Independence.
The protests, which began late last month, reached a
boiling point earlier this week when student activists at Dhaka University, the
largest university in the country, engaged in violent clashes with police and
counter-protesters aligned with the ruling Awami League.
The controversial quota system reserves up to 30 per
cent of government jobs for family members of veterans who fought in
Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence against Pakistan. Protesters argue that
this system is discriminatory and disproportionately benefits supporters of
Prime Minister Hasina's Awami League party. They advocate for a merit-based
system to replace the existing quota. Prime Minister Hasina's fiery remarks at
a public gathering ignited further protests.
"If not the grandchildren of the freedom
fighters, then who will get quota benefits? The grandchildren of the
'Razakars'?" the Bangladeshi PM asked. "This is my question. I want
to ask the people of the nation. If the protesters don't comply, I can do
nothing. They can continue their protest. If protesters damage properties or
attack cops, the law will take its course. We can't help."

France races to head off Islamic State group threat to
Paris Olympics
Jul 20, 2024

street in central Paris on Friday, a week ahead of the opening ceremony for the
Summer Olympics. | AFP-JIJI
---------------
PARIS – Tajik journalist Temur Varki received a
disquieting call from Paris police in late March, days after Islamic State
group militants from his homeland allegedly carried out a massacre in Moscow.
The two officers questioned him about France's tiny
community of immigrants from Tajikistan, an impoverished former Soviet republic
in Central Asia.
"Who do you know? How many? Where?" Varki
recalled the officers asking, with one of them speaking Russian, a commonly
used language across Central Asia. Varki, a political refugee in France who has
worked for outlets including the BBC, told the police callers he knew a handful
of Tajiks in the country, mainly fellow emigres and dissidents.
Ahead of the Paris Olympics that begin on Friday,
French security services have been racing to address an intelligence blind spot
and forge deeper ties with Tajiks and other Central Asians in the country,
according to more than a dozen people with knowledge of the drive. They include
current and former intelligence officials, police, diplomats and Central Asian
migrants who have been contacted by authorities.
The outreach comes in the wake of two major attacks this
year that authorities say were carried out by Tajik members of ISIS-K, a
resurgent wing of Islamic State named after the historical region of Khorasan
that included parts of Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asia.
A double suicide bombing in Iran on Jan. 3 killed
about 100 people at a memorial ceremony for slain Revolutionary Guards
commander Qassem Soleimani, while the Moscow tragedy on March 22 saw gunmen
open fire at concertgoers at Crocus City Hall, killing more than 130 people.
French authorities say they have already foiled one
Islamist attack tied to the Olympics, with the arrest in late May of an
18-year-old Chechen man suspected of planning a suicide mission on behalf of
the Islamic State group at Saint-Etienne's soccer stadium, where France, the United
States and Ukraine will play.
With its complex colonial past, lingering anti-Muslim
sentiment and historic involvement in Middle Eastern and African wars, France
has long been a target of Islamist attacks. Last month, Paris police Chief
Laurent Nunez said, "Islamist terrorism remains our main concern" at
the Olympics, though authorities say there have been no direct threats against
the Games.
Tajikistan, plagued by civil war in the 1990s, is the
poorest of the former Soviet republics. It relies on remittances from migrants
— mainly in Russia — for nearly half of its economic output.
Poor, isolated young men among the Tajik diaspora have
proven to be an attractive recruiting pool for ISIS-K, according to many
security experts. Yet French intelligence has few Central Asian assets, an
intelligence source said, and finds their small, tight-knit communities hard to
penetrate. According to France's Tajik Association, there are around 30 Tajik
families living in the country.
The intelligence source, who requested anonymity to
discuss security matters, said ISIS-K represented a relatively new threat, with
recruiters-cum-handlers who are based abroad able to remotely radicalize and
activate Central Asians in France to carry out attacks on French soil.
As evidence, the source pointed to the case of a Tajik
man who was arrested in 2022 for plotting an attack in Strasbourg. The source
said the man was acting under instruction from ISIS-K handlers based abroad.
A second security source said France had identified a
dozen ISIS-K handlers, based in countries around Afghanistan who have a strong
online presence and try to convince young men in European countries who are
interested in joining up with the group overseas to instead carry out domestic
attacks.
The handlers then connect the recruits with people who
can provide fake IDs and weapons on the ground in the country involved,
according to the source, in a process that can take just a few weeks.
The two police officers who spoke to Varki declined to
comment. Paris police referred questions to the French interior ministry, which
declined to comment.
Along with Varki, reporters spoke to two other Tajiks
and one Uzbek based in France who had been contacted by police and questioned
about their communities.
Nadejda Atayeva, an Uzbek human rights activist in the
northwestern city of Le Mans, said she gave officials Varki's phone number
after meeting with them at police HQ in Paris.
"I was asked for contacts of Tajiks I trust. I
was told that they wanted to talk to Tajiks to get their opinion on the events
in Moscow," she said. Sebastien Peyrouse, a French academic who has
briefed French and U.S. security agencies on Central Asian militancy, said
Paris may have been slow to react to the potential Tajik threat.
"France has focused much more on radicalized
people coming from the Middle East, from Algeria, from northern Africa, than
from Central Asia," he said. "I think France was pretty surprised by
what happened in Moscow and it could be a little bit late."
Russian intelligence still has the best oversight of
Central Asian militant networks, despite failing to prevent the Crocus City
Hall attack, said Edward Lemon, a Tajikistan expert who regularly briefs
Western spy agencies.
Yet intelligence-sharing between Russia and France
about Islamic State and other militant groups has been drastically reduced
since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, French Defense Minister Sebastien
Lecornu said in April this year.
Two U.S. State Department officials coordinating
Olympics security for Team USA told Reuters they were confident in France's
preparations. Without going into specifics, they said French efforts to build
deeper ties with its Tajik population reflected a common counterterrorism
practice to learn more about possible threatening actors within the community.
The main Tajik militant risk in Europe comes from
about a dozen radicalized men who fought in Syria and have slowly filtered back
into the continent via Ukraine following the decline of Islamic State in the
Middle East, according to Lemon and other two other Central Asia experts
interviewed.
Last year, German authorities arrested seven Central
Asians living in the country on suspicion of founding a terrorist organization.
The Turkmen, Tajik and Kyrgyz nationals entered Germany from Ukraine shortly
after the Russian invasion in early 2022, prosecutors said. They are currently
in jail awaiting trial.
Lemon estimated there were tens of thousands of Tajiks
living in Europe, mainly concentrated in Poland and Germany. Most are political
refugees who arrived roughly a decade ago after Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon
designated two opposition movements — Group 24 and the Islamic Renaissance
Party — as extremist and terrorist organizations. Rakhmon, an ally of Russia,
has ruled Tajikistan for 30 years.
Varki, an outspoken Rakhmon critic, said he had sought
asylum in France in 2016 because he loved French culture and literature. He
said he had never spoken with French security services until the police called
him in March.
"They asked me what I knew," said Sadriddin.
He added that he was eager to help but told them: "I do not know Tajiks
with a radical opinion."
A former U.S. spy, speaking on condition of anonymity
to discuss his time working with French security services on Central Asian
issues, said French counterintelligence was generally very well regarded. But
he said pressuring Tajiks for information could backfire by stigmatizing them,
making them less likely to want to flag risky individuals.
"This community-building relationship should have
been done years ago. If it's with a counterterrorism mindset, then it's a
recipe for failure," he said. "If France decides to put too much
pressure on that diaspora, it might create the very threat that they are trying
to eliminate for the Olympics."

‘Forbidden’: Religious authorities denounce Perikatan
MPs’ move to aim ‘Qunut Nazilah’ at fellow Muslims
By Malay Mail

----------------
KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — Islam forbids Muslims from
reciting the “Qunut Nazilah” against their religious brethren as the prayer
calls for their destruction, said Terengganu Mufti Datuk Mohamad Sabri Haron.
He said the purpose of the prayer could be seen from
the times Prophet Muhammad recited the verse, such as during the Battle of
Ahzab.
“Islam prohibits the recitation of the Qunut Nazilah
prayer for fellow Muslims, regardless of political differences or differing
views on matters,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian today.
Earlier this week, Perikatan Nasional MPs made a show
of reciting the “Qunut Nazilah” in Dewan Rakyat, ostensibly to protest the
suspension of Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal for questioning a
proposed Malaysia Airports Holding Bhd deal.
They claimed they did so to show solidarity with
Palestinians locked in war with Israelis, but the juxtaposition with a social
media video featuring the “Qunut Nazilah” and urging its use to pray for the
downfall of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his administration led
to suspicions over their motive.

Arab and Muslim media on the Trump shooting: Dark
jokes, darker warnings
By MOHAMMAD ALI SALIH
JULY 21, 2024
Former US President Donald Trump attends the
Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States on
July 18, 2024. (Jacek Boczarski/Anadolu via Getty Images)
-------------
Editorials in many major newspapers in Arab and Muslim
countries were relatively restrained in addressing the attempted assassination
of Donald Trump, mostly focusing on the well-known problem of violence in
America. Social media comments, however, were another story, often reflecting
the widespread view of Trump as an enemy of Muslims — if not of Islam in
general.
There were two widely shared theories: One proposed a
mo’amara (Arabic for conspiracy) in which Iran, the most anti-American nation
in the region, was behind the assassination attempt. Indeed, statements from
top American intelligence experts that they were expecting “something” from
Iran, although they didn’t cite anything specific, were seen as further
evidence.
The second involved masrahiya (Arabic for a staged
event). In the 1999 film “Al-Walad Mahroos,” Adel Imam, an Egyptian actor known
throughout the Arab world, played a security guard who is shot protecting a
political candidate during an assassination attempt, but survives. The guard
then exploits his injuries to gain sympathy and a level of popularity rivaling
that of the candidate himself.
That popular comedy is often cited in Arabic-language
social media as an analogy explaining Trump's apparent increase in popularity
after the assassination attempt.
Many Muslims seemed convinced that Trump had staged
the Pennsylvania incident: One commenter stated that since Trump was
“al-Shaitan” (Satan or the devil), he was clearly capable of doing that.
As noted above, more serious commentary was found in
some major newspapers, most of it about rising political violence in America, a
country often seen as eager to enforce its standards on others.
One example came in an editorial in the National, an
English-language paper in the United Arab Emirates: “The attempt on Trump’s
life marks an odious moment in America’s darkening political cycle … The
country has witnessed an unacceptable rise in political violence in recent
years.”
The Gulf Times of Qatar was even more direct: “As ugly
as it may sound, the attempt to assassinate Trump is somewhat normal, in the
sense that it is consistent with a widespread pattern of recourse to brute
force in American life.”
A columnist in Saudi Arabia's Asharq Al-Awsat sought
to connect recent events to historical lessons many Americans seem eager to
avoid: “Violence in America started with the annihilation of the original
population by the White invaders … later, the importation of African slaves in
bottom of ships as if they were animals.”
Many commenters on Arab and Islamic social media
launched personal attacks on Trump, particularly focused on the “Muslim ban” from
the beginning of his presidential term.
Curiously enough, some Muslim commenters had
apparently paid attention to comments made by evangelicals at the Republican
National Convention in Milwaukee, used to make their point that Trump and his
party are opposed to Islam. Commenters noted that Trump was described as a
Christian martyr, who had been falsely accused and convicted just as Jesus was.
Everything shows Trump’s hate of Muslims. May Allah
cause his hate to unite us, the Muslims, and wake us up from our present
miseries.
Funny, the Jews enjoy the support of Christian
Americans, not knowing the Christians want Israel to disappear, so Jesus Christ
returns.
There were also many far more sober comments,
suggesting that since Trump seems closer to regaining the White House after the
assassination attempt, Muslims should expect another travel ban and other forms
of U.S. government persecution.
JD Vance joked that the U.K. might become the first
“truly Islamist” country with nuclear weapons. This provoked many angry
responses from Muslim social media.
One comment on the Arabic-language site Elaf site
cited Trump’s 2016 campaign promise to “get rid of radical terrorist Islam from
the face of the earth.” A comment on Al Jazeera's Arabic site recalled Trump's
proposal to institute an “ideological test” for Muslim immigrants and visitors
to the U.S. A third comment, on the site Al-Itihad, observed that “the
Americans, looking for an enemy after the fall of the Soviet Union, targeted
Islam.”
Trump's infamous "Muslim ban” of 2017 was
officially titled Executive Order 13769, “Protecting the Nation from Foreign
Terrorist Entry into the United States.” It had numerous legal and logistical
problems and never went into full effect. A revised order was issued and the
list of countries affected kept changing; there were intergovernmental quarrels
along with protests from U.S. allies in the Muslim world. President Biden
revoked the entire package as soon as he took office in 2021, with Secretary of
State Antony Blinken declaring that the entire affair was “a stain on our
national conscience.”
Now Trump hopes to bring the ban back, eight years
later. As part of his promise to act as a dictator on "day one" of
his administration, he has told supporters he would immediately begin
“ideological screening” for all immigrants and bar those who sympathize with
Hamas and Muslim extremists.
Many Pakistani social media posters, writing in
English, said they expected further punitive measures from Trump in a second term.
Several remembered this Trump tweet from 2018: “The United States has foolishly
given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and
they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as
fools … No more!”
Commenters also noted recent remarks by Sen. JD Vance,
Trump’s running mate, who suggested that under the newly-elected Labour Party
government, the U.K. might become the first “truly Islamist” country with
nuclear weapons. Vance's supposed joke, presumably intended as a critique of
immigration, provoked many angry responses, both in Britain and the Muslim
world. More moderate commenters simply observed that the Ohio senator had been
chosen to continue Trump’s anti-Muslim policies into the next generation.
Some commenters also reflected on the apparent rise of
Christian nationalism in America, noting that two-thirds of white evangelical
Christians saw Trump as an ally in advancing their agenda and that new laws in
Louisiana and Oklahoma, respectively, mandated posting the Ten Commandments in
classrooms and teaching Bible lessons in public schools.

BJP wants to finish rights of Muslims, Dalits:
Mehbooba Mufti on UP government’s Kanwar Yatra order
ByAshiq Hussain
Jul 20, 2024
The Uttar Pradesh government’s order making it
mandatory for eateries on the Kanwar Yatra routes to display the name of owners
has prompted a sharp reaction from Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba
Mufti, who on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) government — accusing it of wanting to finish the rights of Muslims,
Dalits and other backward groups.
Mufti, during a party function in Srinagar, said the
country’s Constitution gives equal rights to all, adding, “There is no
discrimination on the basis of name or religion. Our Constitution is just to
all. The BJP government is tearing to shreds the same Constitution.”
The former chief minister said Congress leader Rahul
Gandhi was right in calling the BJP’s alleged intention “finish the
constitution” were they to cross 400 seats in the recently held Lok Sabha

“But they did not learn their lesson. From 300 seats,
they came down to 240, but still they are not learning and are going against

may have also gotten the hint that they wanted to “finish” the Constitution.

Amit Shah's 'Love Jihad, Land Jihad' Jibe At Jharkhand
Chief Minister Hemant Soren
By: Sahil Sinha
Jul 20, 2024
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday launched an
attack against Hemant Soren, alleging that Jharkhand's tribal Chief Minister
was instrumental behind "love jihad" and "land jihad" in
the state due to his "vote bank and appeasement policy". Shah said
that Soren's policies have led to demographic changes in the tribal state.
"A tribal Chief Minister, instead of worrying
about the tribals, is disturbing the balance of land and population by doing
'land jihad' and 'love jihad'. Thousands of infiltrators marry tribal girls,
get certificates, and buy land. The tribal population is going to decrease in
the coming days, it has decreased even now," Amit Shah said while
addressing party workers at Prabhat Tara Ground in Ranchi.
Furthermore, the Home Minister also said that if the
BJP forms the next government in Jharkhand, it will release a 'White Paper' on
demography to protect tribal lands and rights.
"You form the government of BJP and we will
secure the land, demography and reservation of our tribals by bringing a white
paper," he said, noting that the party won in 52 of 81 Assembly segments
in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

2024-07-21
KABUL (BNA): In a recent interview with the TASS news agency,
the Russian ambassador in Kabul highlighted the warm relations between

European countries, including Italy, are actively considering establishing
diplomatic relations with the Islamic Emirate and reopening their embassies in

The political success of the Islamic Emirate in Doha

territory should not be used against any other country. Remarkably, over the
past nearly three years, there have been no incidents originating from
Afghanistan, demonstrating the Islamic Emirate’s commitment to this condition.

Defence Department sets out compensation plan for
unlawful Afghanistan killings
21-07-2024
The Australian government has laid out how it will
compensate the families of people found to have been unlawfully killed or
abused by Australian special forces in Afghanistan.
A landmark inquiry into Australian special forces in
Afghanistan finds evidence of the "murder" of 39 prisoners, farmers
or other civilians and recommends 19 soldiers be investigated by police.
Compensation was one of the recommendations from the
damning 2020 Brereton report, which found "credible information" that
Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel were involved in serious crimes,
including the "murder" of 39 prisoners and civilians between 2005 and
2016.
In regulations quietly published on Thursday, it shows
a new Afghanistan Inquiry Compensation Advocate will assess a claim if the
Chief of the Defence Force (CDF), Admiral David Johnston, refers it to them
based on a series of criteria.
That includes that the claim must relate to someone
who is "reasonably likely" to be the victim of assault or property
damage or a family member of someone unlawfully killed.

Curfew extended in Bangladesh as top court set to rule
on job quotas that sparked deadly unrest
Jul 21, 2024
Bangladeshi authorities extended a curfew across the
country on Sunday as the nation's top court was expected to rule on a civil
service hiring quota that has led to days of deadly clashes between police and
protesters, killing scores of people.
The nationwide demonstrations - called for mainly by
student groups - began weeks ago to protest a quota system that reserves up to
30% of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh's war
of independence in 1971. Violence erupted Tuesday, with the Daily Prothom Alo
newspaper on Saturday reporting the death of at least 103 people so far.
During the week, police fired tear gas and rubber
bullets and hurled smoke grenades to scatter stone-throwing protesters who
filled the streets and university campuses. Sporadic clashes in some parts of
Dhaka, the capital, were reported on Saturday but it was not immediately clear
whether there were any fatalities.

Why did Muslims in Birmingham turn away from Labour?
By Simon Gilbert
21-07-2024
An obvious police presence, chants of ‘shame on you’
and threats to remove members of the public.
This wasn’t a protest. This was supposed to be a
standard general election declaration - where the most eye-catching thing you
can usually hope to see is a glimpse of a candidate dressed as a bin or wearing
a baked bean balaclava.
On a night Labour was cruising to victory nationally,
huge Labour majorities in the second city were being slashed, and even
overcome, by independents.
The scenes at the ICC were the culmination of six
weeks of campaigning described as “gruesome” by Labour’s Yardley MP Jess
Phillips.

Oil-tainted lake a symptom, and symbol, of Venezuela's
collapse
Jul 21, 2024
MARACAIBO: A putrid smell hangs over the black-stained
shores of Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela, where an oil slick is emblematic of the
steep decline in the country's once-enviable petroleum industry.
Here, much like elsewhere in what was once Latin
America's richest country, economic hardship drives much of the discussion
ahead of July 28 elections, in which President Nicolas Maduro will seek a third
six-year term.
"We suffer. Fishing from the shore is no longer
possible because of the oil," fisherman Yordi Vicuna, 34, told AFP, adding
that catches have fallen tenfold.
He said nets must constantly be washed or replaced
after being soiled by oil that leaks from decayed pipes which the government
cannot afford to fix.
Much of Venezuela's economic collapse -- fueled partly
by a sharp international drop in oil prices after 2014 -- has happened under
the watch of Maduro, who has been in office since 2013.

'I took a bullet for democracy': Donald Trump holds

Jul 21, 2024
Donald Trump has returned to the campaign trail,
holding his first rally since surviving an assassination attempt last week. The
former president chose Michigan, a crucial battleground state, to make his

As he took the stage, Trump expressed his gratitude,
saying, "Very special thanks to Americans nationwide, including all of you
here today for your extraordinary outpouring of love and support in the wake of

"Fight, fight, fight!" as Trump stood before them, his ear bandage
now replaced with a skin-colored one.
Vance, who joined Trump for their first joint

Trump campaign releases letter on his injury,
treatment after last week's assassination attempt
Jul 21, 2024
NEW YORK: Donald Trump's campaign released an update
on the former president's health Saturday, one week after he survived an
attempted assassination at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The memo, from Texas representative Ronny Jackson, a
staunch supporter who served as Trump's White House physician, offers new
details on the nature of the GOP nominee's injuries and the treatment he
received in the immediate aftermath of the attack.
It is the most thorough accounting to date of the former
president's condition since the night of the shooting, which also left one
rally-goer dead and injured two others.
According to Jackson, Trump sustained a gunshot wound
to the right ear that came "less than a quarter of an inch from entering
his head, and struck the top of his right ear."
The bullet track, he said, "produced a 2 cm wide
wound that extended down to the cartilaginous surface of the ear. There was
initially significant bleeding, followed by marked swelling of the entire upper
ear."

How Telegram Became The Mecca For Memecoin
by Abisola Iremide
July 20th, 2024
One of the fondest memories of the 2022 crypto boom is
the vibrant Discord crypto community. Not only was it the most popular social
messaging platform of choice for crypto projects and ideas, but it was also a
beehive of activity with millions of daily active users as well. While the platform hosted legit crypto projects
with sky-high valuations, it was also the haven for crypto scammers.
But as the crypto winter began, the once flourishing
app teeming with millions of crypto investors and enthusiasts began to lose its
aura. Everything soon appeared to be coming to a halt as a growing number of
servers lay dormant, choked with spam, and devoid of human interaction,
signaling a potential downturn.
Today, with the crypto market experiencing a rebound,
the social media preference is now in favor of Telegram, boasting almost a
billion users and serving vibrant crypto communities peopled by millions of

Israel Is Reviewing a Proposal to Install a “Moderate
Muslim” Puppet Regime in Gaza
By Yaniv Cogan
July 20, 2024
On Thursday, the Israeli Knesset voted overwhelmingly
to thwart any effort to establish an independent Palestinian state and, in
effect, doubled down on Israel’s longstanding project of confining Palestinians
in increasingly isolated and uninhabitable ghettos. Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu has made clear he opposes any ceasefire with Hamas that does
not allow for him to continue his military campaign in Gaza and has worked to sabotage
a negotiated end to the war.
At the same time, the Israeli government has been
entertaining dystopian and fundamentally unrealistic “post-war” plans for
governing Gaza—either through occupation, or, as one influential paper
suggests, installing a “moderate Muslim” puppet regime.
Israeli security officials praised the recent academic
paper recommending the elimination of democracy in Gaza and the rebuilding of
Gazan society into a “moderate Muslim entity” in the mold of the United Arab
Emirates and Saudi Arabia. In the plan are several ideas for entirely remaking
Gazan society, including razing refugee camps, banning “every existing”
schoolbook, and establishing total control of the media. The proposal also
calls for the elimination of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency and
shutting down the social and humanitarian programs run by Hamas and replacing
them with an alternative Israeli-controlled structure.
“We, at the [Israeli] National Security Council, have
read [this] excellent document,” its director Tzachi Hanegbi told i24 News in a
recent interview, “and at the end of the day we, the decision makers, will have
to take into account this analysis, because it’s a brilliant analysis.”

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis claim to have fired
multiple ballistic missiles at Eilat
EMANUEL FABIAN
21-07-2024
Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis claim to have fired
“multiple” ballistic missiles toward Israel.
The rebel group says they launched the missiles toward
Israel’s southernmost city of Eilat.
Earlier this morning, the IDF said a ballistic missile
launched by the Houthis from Yemen was intercepted by Israel’s long-range Arrow
3 defense system.
According to the military, the surface-to-surface
missile was intercepted outside of Israeli airspace. The Arrow 3 system is
designed to take out ballistic missiles while they are still outside of the
atmosphere.

Israeli Jets Bomb Sites in Yemen Linked to Iran-Backed
Houthis
By Aaron Boxerman
July 20, 2024
Israeli fighter jets bombed a port in Yemen controlled
by the Iran-backed Houthi militia on Saturday in retaliation for the group’s
deadly drone attack in Tel Aviv a day earlier. It was the first time Israel has
publicly struck the group following months of escalating Houthi attacks.
The airstrikes targeted a power station as well as gas
and oil depots in the area of the Red Sea port of Hodeidah, according to a
Houthi spokesman and two regional officials, who spoke on condition of
anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Israel said it had struck sites used for military
purposes, although Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the Israeli military spokesman,
said that Israel had attacked some “dual use” targets that have both civilian
and military functions.
Admiral Hagari said the operation was “one of the farthest
and longest ever conducted by the Israeli air force.” He called the port a
major supply stop for Iran to funnel weapons to its Houthi allies in Yemen, who
have fired over 200 missiles and drones at Israel over the past several months.

After surprise Tel Aviv attack, Houthi drone arsenal
comes under spotlight - analysis
By SETH J. FRANTZMAN
JULY 20, 2024
The Iranian-backed Houthis have been using drones for
a decade, beginning during the civil war in Yemen. When Saudi Arabia intervened
in Yemen to prevent the Houthis taking over Aden and other key parts of the
country in 2015, the Iranian backing for them increased. This helped them
develop a large arsenal of drones.
The Houthis chose to develop drones, because this was
a cheap way to create a kind of instant air force. They don’t have any
resources, and their power comes from their relatively impoverished supporters
in the mountains of Yemen.
With Iranian support, however, they built an
impressive arsenal of missiles and drones. They used these to terrorize Saudi
Arabia after 2015. They used kamikaze drones, for instance, to attack air
defense radars.
But the Qasef had an initial range of around 160
kilometers and was about three meters long. It also had a three-meter wingspan.
With its warhead, the kamikaze drone weighs up to 90 kilograms and flies at a
speed of around 320 kilometers per hour. The Qasef has a strange design, with long
wings at the back and short wings in the front. In this respect it has some
similarities to a cheap cruise missile.

Netanyahu says Israel struck port used by Houthis for
Iranian weapon shipments
21 July 2024

port struck by Israeli fighter jets in Yemen on Saturday was used as an entry
point for Houthi militia to receive Iranian weapons.
Netanyahu said the strike, some 1,800 km (1,120 miles)
from Israel's borders, was a reminder to enemies that there was no place that
Israel could not reach.

Ansar Allah Political Bureau condemns Israeli
aggression against Yemen
20 Jul 2024
SANA'A July 20. 2024 (Saba) - The Political Bureau of
Ansar Allah strongly condemned the series of vicious raids carried out by the
Israeli enemy this evening on Yemen.
In a statement received by Saba on Saturday, Ansar
al-Allah politician denounced the Israeli aggression's targeting of oil storage
facilities in the port of Hodeida and the governorate's power station, which
resulted in the death of a number of martyrs and wounded civilians, and the
injury of others with burns.
It stressed that the Israeli aggression on Yemen comes
against the backdrop of Yemen's positions in support of the Palestinian people
in Gaza, who are subjected to genocide by the Israeli enemy.
It pointed out that the Israeli enemy's setting fire
to a civilian port will not restore deterrence to its collapsed forces, which
are in their weakest stages and are unable to achieve victory in a few
kilometers of Gaza.
