Killing

Dalai
Lama visited the Jokhang Temple, Jamia Masjid, Shia Mosque and Moravian Church
as part of an interfaith pilgrimage in Leh, Ladakh
------------
Heart-warming
scenes were witnessed in Ladakh’s Leh district on Saturday when the Dalai Lama
visited a temple, a church, a Sunni Mosque and a Shia Imam Bara (a place
designated for religious congregational mourning), where he joined special
prayers held for peace and brotherhood in the world.
A
spokesman of the Dalai Lama said he visited the Jokhang Temple, Jamia Masjid,
Shia Mosque and Moravian Church as part “of an interfaith pilgrimage in Leh,
Ladakh”.
This
is the first visit of the Dalai Lama to Ladakh since it was carved out as a
Union Territory from J&K in 2019. This visit also comes in the backdrop of
a growing military confrontation between India and China in the region since
2020.
The
Dalai Lama was seen wearing a skull cap and eating from the hands of Muslim
women as they welcomed him in local mosques. He was seen praying along with
Muslim priests for global peace. He also expressed unhappiness over violence
driven by religion and referred to Afghanistan as an example.
“One
of my commitments is the promotion of religious harmony. All religions, whether
theistic and non-theistic, have a message of compassion. These days and even in
the past, sometimes because of different faiths, there are killings, which is
sad and unbelievable. In our neighbourhood in Afghanistan, Sunnis and Shias are
killing each other. It’s sad,” said the Dalai Lama.
He
further said he joins prayers irrespective of the place being a mosque, church
or temple “to promote religious harmony”. “I am happy to join Muslim brothers
and sisters (in Leh),” the Dalai Lama said.
He
said he left Tibet’s capital Lhasa many decades ago and came to India as a
refugee. “With the sense of brotherhood here in India, I am very happy,” he
added.
The
Dalai Lama flagged the issue of global warming and termed it “serious”. “We
have to live together, work together and help each other. Global warming is a
real danger to human life. We can’t avoid it but need to remain with a genuine
sense of brotherhood. There is no longer emphasis on my nation, my country or
my political party. The entire humanity is facing the problem. We have to live
with a sense of brotherhood and with universal responsibility,” he said.

Govt's
Spokesperson: Allowing Zionist journalist to desecrate Great Mosque of Mecca is
betrayal of Allah, Islamic sanctities
23/July/2022
SANA'A,
July 23 (Saba) - Spokesman for the National Salvation Government - Minister of
Information - Daifallah Al-Shami on Saturday said that the Saudi regime's
allowing a Zionist journalist to desecrate the Great Mosque of Mecca is a
betrayal of Allah and Islamic sanctities.
"At
a time the Saudi regime prevents millions from performing the Hajj, it is easy
for the Jews to enter Mecca and the holy sites, and this is evidence that this
regime is loyal to the Jews and seeks to implement their plans," Al-Shami
said in a statement to the Yemeni News Agency (Saba).
He
stressed that "the Saudi regime does not have the right to administer the
holy sites, as it is the property of Muslims and not the property of Al
Saud."
Al-Shami
considered the entry of a Zionist journalist to Mecca, Arafat Mount, and other
sacred sites as a provocation to the feelings of Muslims, which required action
to confront the scheme of Al Saud and the Zionist entity targeting Mecca and
the Sacred House.
He
noted that the opening of the Kingdom's airspace to the Zionist entity's planes
comes within the framework of the normalization steps between the Saudi regime
and the occupation state.
The
government spokesman called on the Islamic peoples and the nation's scholars to
take a real position against the Saudi regime and its plans against Islam and
Muslims, and to demand that it lift its hand from Islamic sanctities.

Can
Germany prevent attacks by Islamist extremists?
By
DW News
July
24, 2022
Interior
Minister Nancy Faser (m) paid her first visit to the anti-terror center GTAZ in
July
------------
Berlin,
July 24: December 19, 2016, was a particularly dark day for Germany's Joint
Counter Terrorism Center. That was the day when the terrorist Anis Amri steered
a stolen truck into a crowd of people at the Christmas market on Berlin's
Breitscheidplatz. Twelve people died, and over 60 were injured, some of them
critically. Many victims are still suffering today from the consequences of the
worst Islamist attack in Germany.
Federal
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, who has been in office since 2021, was far away
from Berlin at the time. She was a member of the Hesse state parliament. In her
new role, she has paid a visit to the Joint Counter Terrorism Center, or GTAZ,
in Berlin, which deals exclusively with the issue of Islamist extremism.
Here,
40 federal and state security agencies work together. The large number is
mainly due to the fact that all 16 German states have their own Criminal
Investigation Office (LKA) and their own domestic intelligence agency
(Verfassungsschutz). Every day, the representatives meet in a long conference
room to discuss the current threat levels.
The
Interior Minister described this form of networking as the "most important
building block" in the fight against Islamist terrorism. Since the GTAZ
was founded in 2004, 21 attacks have been prevented, she said, calling this a
"great achievement." But in eleven more cases, security authorities
were too late, she admits. "This shows that the threat level remains
high," Faeser concluded.
While
the Interior Minister was upbeat in her assessment of the German "security
architecture" — a label for this formalized interaction of the authorities
– other politicians were more critical.
In
view of the many mishaps before and after the Breitscheidplatz attack, conservative
MP Stephan Harbarth came to the conclusion that, "federalism can become an
obstacle to the fight against Islamist terrorism." He made his remarks
following the special investigator's final report in 2017.
Harbarth
is now the President of the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe and wants
to see more centralized control: "We need federal authorities to be more
involved in dealing with dangerous persons," the former member of the
Bundestag demanded. In his new job, he also has to deal with the issue of
combating terrorism. Time and again, the Court has to deal with the security
apparatus and the legislation which is the basis for the work of police
agencies and intelligence services such as the Federal Intelligence Service
(BND) or the domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the
Protection of the Constitution (Verfassungsschutz, BfV).
The
GTAZ is a place for networking rather than an office that has a legal remit for
the comprehensive exchange of information. Federal Interior Minister Nancy
Faeser says she could imagine changing that, but the most important thing, she
says, is that the cooperation can continue.
But
the lack of a clear legal basis is precisely what constitutional law expert
Matthias Bäcker has been criticizing for years: "So far, there is no one
who is responsible for controlling the GTAZ as such," he complained even
before the Breitscheidplatz attack.
On
the homepage of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the GTAZ is described
as a "cooperation platform." The "expertise of all relevant
actors" will be bundled and "effective cooperation" will be made
possible. In practice, however, this can sometimes go wrong, as the failure in
the Anis Amri case showed particularly painfully.
Ulf
Buermeyer, a lawyer and chairman of the Society for Civil Liberties
(Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte, GFF) sees the GTAZ as "a symptom of a
misguided development in the German security architecture."
Buermeyer
filed a complaint against the Bavarian Constitutional Protection Act with the
Federal Constitutional Court. In that context, he also brought up the GTAZ and
its operations. His observations read like an after-the-fact explanation for
why it was unable to prevent the attack on the Berlin Christmas market. This is
because the "overlapping of competencies and responsibilities has
considerable disadvantages for the prevention of danger. Multiple
responsibilities of police and intelligence services lead to a "systematic
diffusion of information." He concluded with the saying "too many
cooks spoil the broth."

Christians,
Muslims can engage in fruitful dialogue
By
Msgr John Wynand Katende

Everyone
ought to aim at keeping peace. PHOTO | PROMISE TWINAMUKYE
------------
St
Peter urges Christians to understand that they are, right now, fully equipped
to lead the good and godly lives they are called to. This would be the best
testimony of the goodness of their faith, before people of other faiths.
July
12, saw Prince KassimNakibinge being the guest of honour at my 70th birthday
anniversary celebrations. Prince Nakibinge is the titular head of Muslims in
Uganda, after his late father, Prince BadiruWassajjaKakungulu.
In
his own testimony, the prince cherishes memories of his father’s relationship
with Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga. As a result, he did his early studies in very
prominent Catholic schools, namely, Kabojja, Savio and St. Mary’s College,
Kisubi.
When
I gifted my guest with a Bible, he was quick to testify already being an ardent
reader of the same. The Prince planted a memorial tree, witnessed by Catholic
Bishop Mathias Ssekamanya and Anglican Bishop James Ssebaggala.
This
story is an excellent showcase of interfaith dialogue, both in theory and
practice. Interfaith dialogue, at this level, aims to foster mutual
understanding by exploring common elements between Christianity and Islam,
while also not shying away from relevant differences.
“In
our time, when mankind is being drawn closer together, and the ties between
different people are becoming stronger, the Church examines more closely her
relationship to non-Christian religions,” says the Vatican II declaration
Nostra Aetate (In our time), written in 1965.
In
this document, the Church seeks to be respectful to Muslim believers, while
also being honest about the different worldviews that Christianity and Islam
present.
In
2017 a symposium between the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue
and its Muslim counterpart, the Al-Azhar Centre for Dialogue, was held in
Cairo. It observed that among
Christians, there was both a lack of knowledge about Islam and a lack of
resources for attaining that knowledge. Similarly, many Muslims regularly
encountered misinformation about Christianity and Catholicism. Here arises the
importance of educating the faithful of both institutions.
Interfaith
dialogue demands a renunciation of the polemic/controversial mode, from
contentious questions, while also remaining respectful to both sides. “Given
more clarity, understanding and appreciation, Islam and Christianity can be
“two communities seeking God and even encouraging each other.” says Gabriel
Said Reynolds, Notre Dame professor of Islamic studies. Interfaith dialogue can
be a powerful tool of mitigating Neo-paganism or secularism. Interfaith
dialogue does not, however, mean shying away from real theological differences.
For example, the Koran describes Jews and Christians as the ‘people of the
book.” This is a misinterpretation. Christianity is a religion of a person: God
has revealed himself not only in words or commands but in a human being, in
Jesus (John 1:14). His followers are called Christians (Acts 11:26).
The
figure of Christ has been a dominant throughout the ages of Muslim-Christian
dialogue. The essential question about him being God or not God, is what
divides the two. For Muslims, the Christian teaching about Jesus as the Son of
God is not only incoherent, but is actually offensive, because Islam teaches
that God is one and God can have no son. What Christianity is claiming about
Jesus is above all a view of divine love, love for creation. With this in mind,
some of the controversy is lessened by an appreciation of the beauty of the
Christian faith.

Bangladesh
Hindu outfits stage nationwide protests over constant attack on minorities
July
24, 2022
Organisations
across Bangladesh held protests against the attack on the Hindu community in
the country. A protest march was held in Chittagong on Friday against the
attack on the Hindu community and the ongoing killing of Hindu teachers and
rape of Hindu women in Bangladesh, reported local media.
Hindu
Sangbad, a Bangladesh news agency wrote on Twitter, "Demonstrations by
various Hindu organizations in Shahbagh and across the country were also held
peacefully in protest against the barbaric radical Jihadi attack on Hindus in
NarailSahapara."
Earlier,
Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said the government will ensure
strict action against people who disturb communal harmony in the country.
The
Bangladesh National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) also directed the Home
Ministry to probe into the attacks and determine whether there was negligence
in preventing them. The NHRC also said that the violence in a "secular
country" is not acceptable under any circumstances.
According
to ANI, the human rights body's remarks came after reports of Hindu minorities
being attacked in Bangladesh came to light amid rumours of alleged Facebook
posts slandering Islam.
Homes
of Hindu minorities were set on fire on July 15 in the Sahapara area of
Lohagara, Narail. The mobs started setting houses on fire after Friday prayers,
saying that an 18-year-old man from the neighbourhood hurt their religious
feelings on Facebook.
According
to locals, the post was made by Akash Saha, an 18-year-old college student in
the village. They gathered after Friday prayers and protested in front of the
student's house, demanding his arrest.
The
mob spread to neighbouring homes of Hindu minorities after it found out that
the boy was missing. One of the victims whose house was burned down told the
Daily Star, "After one group looted all our valuables, another group came
and found our door open. As there was nothing left to loot, they set our home
on fire."
"I
don't know how long this threat of violence will haunt us. Who will give us
justice? Who will give us security? If I were in the house while they set it on
fire, I would have died. God saved me. But is this any way to survive? All I
have now is the sari on my body," she added.
The
police detained Akash's father, Ashoke Saha on Friday to "bring the
situation under control", while they prepared to file a case under the
Digital Security Act against Akash.
