Jamia Shooter – Who Cannot Be Named For Legal Reasons

New Delhi: Uploading “music” videos featuring the
assault and abduction of Muslim men is the latest turn that the communal career
of the Hindutva extremist known as ‘Jamia shooter’ has taken, but the police
continues to ignore his violent activities.
The young man – who cannot be named for legal reasons
– first burst to prominence two years
ago when, as a juvenile, he opened fire on unarmed protestors from Jamia on
January 30, 2020. Since then, he has been made a number of anti-Muslim
hate-speeches and gained a large following on social media as a poster-boy for
Hindutva, advocating mass violence in pursuit of the cause of turning India
into a Hindu Rashtra. He is also an associate of the known militant Hindutva
leader Deepak Tyagi, who goes by the alias of ‘Yati Narsinghanand’.
His latest actions involve the amplification of ‘music
videos’ that show the abduction, assault and armed intimidation of Muslims at
different locations. Some of his associates who had participated in the recent
anti-Muslim mahapanchayats in Haryana uploaded these “music” videos, at least
four of which are doing the rounds on social media in the Hindutva hate
ecosystem.
While videos showcasing violence against Muslims are
regularly uploaded by these groups, what marks uploads as distinct is that they
appear to have been made for entertainment. One of the Jamia shooter’s “music”
videos on his Instagram page has the
following lyrics: “Chamak Rahi Talwar Hai, Chamak Raha Trishul Hai. Hindu Ko
Kamzor Samjhna Dushman Ki Bhool Hai (The Trishul and sword are shining. It was
the enemy’s mistake to think that Hindus are weak).”
In the first video that was uploaded on the Jamia
shooter’s Instagram page and also shared on one Monu Manesar’s account, a man
who can barely walk is being dragged by a group of Hindutva workers at
gun-point. The caption reads, “Taking away the cow-smuggler.” The man in the
video is then forcefully loaded into a white Scorpio car from Haryana which is
registered in the name of ‘Development & Panchayat’.
In the second video, an armed convoy of Hindutva
nationalists passes through a village in Haryana’s Mewat – where there is a
sizeable Muslim population – threatening children and unarmed women with
weapons as they run away.
In yet another video, men can be seen assaulting a
Muslim scrap-picker with bamboo sticks. The man’s motorcycle and scrap was
flipped over and the mob pinned him to the ground after which blows were rained
on him. The caption claims that these are scrap-pickers who attack Hindu
festivals and Bhagwa-soldiers.
In the final video uploaded on Monu Manesar’s
Instagram account, an old Muslim man with blood all around him is begging for
mercy in a car. Later, he falls unconscious.
Monu Manesar, who posted some of these videos, is a
self-styled Gau Rakshak (cow vigilante) with thousands of followers on social
media. Manesar was introduced by the host of the anti-Muslim Haryana
Mahapanchayat in July 2021 as someone, “who shoots and gets shot while
protecting cows”.
Manesar had also spoken at the Pataudi Mahapanchayat
and his solution to the ‘love jihad’
issue was a direct call to murder. He demanded in his speech that Muslim men
who commit love jihad should be killed and sought a list of ‘love jihadis’ to
be killed by his team while referring to the “big brother”, seemingly a
reference to the BJP, who would ‘save’ his team, presumably from the law.
‘Love jihad’ is the term Hindutva groups use to
describe an imaginary conspiracy by Muslim men to seduce Hindu women in order
to convert them to Islam.
Manesar and the Jamia shooter had posted several such
videos and photos of violence on their social media, The Wire had reported. It
was at this same event that the Jamia shooter led a massive mob of hundreds of
men into the Ramlila ground, the venue of the Pataudi mahapanchayat. They
chanted slogans that included ‘Mullo ka na qazi ka, ye desh hai veer Shivaji ka
(This country belongs to brave Shivaji, not to Muslims or qazis)’. “When
Muslims are murdered, they will shout Ram Ram,” he said in his virulent speech*
at the Pataudi event. When the speech went viral on social media, triggering
outrage, he was arrested and let out on bail swiftly after.
Before this, on May 30, he had made an incendiary
speech via Facebook Live at a mahapanchayat in Indri village, Haryana, calling
upon Hindus to assemble in support of the accused in the case of the kidnap,
lynching and murder of a man named Asif Khan on May 16.
Asif, who was from Khera Khalilpur village in Nuh,
Haryana, had been kidnapped on May 16 and then lynched by a mob. When the Nuh
police named Hindus among the accused in Asif’s murder, a ‘Hindu mahapanchayat’
organised reportedly by the Karni Sena at Indri on May 30, justified Asif’s
murder.
He was charged under Sections 153A (promoting enmity
between different groups on the grounds of religion, race, place of birth,
residence) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage
religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs)
of the Indian Penal Code. At the time, the Gurgaon court said its “conscience
was utterly shocked” on viewing a video recording of the incident, and that
Indian society needed to tackle “… these kind of persons… who, if given a
chance, would organise a mass murder to kill innocent lives based on their own
religious hatred…”
“The accused standing before the court is not a
simple, innocent young boy knowing nothing… rather (his actions) show that
(with) what he has done in the past…. now become capable of executing his
hatred without fear… and that he can move the mass to involve his hatred.”
He was released on bail again after a month on the
condition that he stop making communally charged statements. However, the Jamia
shooter has repeatedly made calls for violence against Muslims on multiple
occasions.
Two months after his bail, he made hateful and
sexualised abuses against actress Urfi
Javed, after which the National Commission for Women took cognisance of
the matter and its chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote to the DGP of Maharashtra to
file an FIR and complete the investigation in a time-bound manner, a report of
which was sought by the commission.
While this is not the first time that the Jamia
shooter has glorified acts of anti-Muslim violence, his recent ‘music’ videos
showcase criminal activities that the Haryana Police has yet to take any action
against the perpetrators for. While The Wire cannot conclusively identify who
the men in these videos are, their faces can clearly be seen. Only a proper
police investigation can tell us whether the Jamia shooter also played a role
in the videos that he posted on his social media accounts. On Twitter, he
claimed that he has nothing to do with the videos and that Mewat has become a
hub of ‘thousands of cow-killings daily.” In an interview to a local channel,
Monu Manesar also claimed that he was not present at the site and those
brandishing guns are policemen.

Islam Is All About Unity: More than 400 Volunteers
Close Out Ramadan Packing 125K Meals in Alexandria for Families in Need
By Solangi Sosa
April 30, 2022
As the Islamic holy month of Ramadan comes to an end,
a non-profit organization and a Northern Virginia community came together to
pack up more than a hundred thousand meals for people in need in the region.
"I feel hungry and thirsty as I’m sure everyone
does, but the energy of helping out and helping people, it just overcomes it,”
volunteer Aseer Ahmad said.
Community members and people affiliated with the
organization Islamic Relief USA and Episcopal High School in Alexandria,
Virginia, joined forces Saturday evening, and for many, the effort was more
than a volunteer opportunity, but also a family event.
The Islamic Relief USA yearly Ramadan event made its
comeback bigger and better than before, after taking a two-year break due to
the pandemic.
"What we are doing here today is we’re going to
try to package as many meals as we can to provide those to people in need,
primarily in the D.C. metro area but even beyond,” the organization’s Assistant
Director of Volunteers Said Durrah said.
News4's Northern Virginia Bureau Chief Julie Carey has
been covering this side of the state since joining NBC4 in 1992. She's joined
by reporter Drew Wilder.
More than 400 volunteers of all ages, culture, and
religious backgrounds arrived in the afternoon to Episcopal High School grounds
ready to pack meals for some of their most vulnerable neighbours.
"That's what we love to do with these guys. We
like to bring them and show them these types of things so they understand what
the world really is about," Michael Alvarado said.
And together, they all met their goal of packing
125,000 meals, to share with community-based organizations and food banks for
families in need.
"Unity is the first word that comes to my head.
Islam is all about unity, and this just shows here in this small community, we
all come together for the same cause of helping our brothers and sisters in
need," Ahmad said.

Blinken Gauges Taliban Promises on Girls Education in Afghanistan
FILE PHOTO: U.S. Secretary
of State Antony Blinken. REUTERS/Tom Brenner/Pool
------
By Arif Ahmadi
30 Apr 2022
Kabul, Afghanistan – The US Secretary of State Antony
Blinken says the Islamic Emirate government fell back on its promise to reopen
secondary and high schools for girls’ education, according to sources, marking
the remarks before the US senate committee Friday evening.
Earlier this month, the Taliban’s first Deputy Prime
Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, gave hope on girls’ education, saying the
issue was pending for a better decision.
“We have seen, including most recently, the Taliban
fall back on its commitment that it had made to ensure that girls can go to
school above the six grade,” he said, as TOLOnews quoted.
When asked by Senator Lindsey Graham about the
presence of Daesh and al-Qaeda groups in Afghanistan, Blinken responded there
is a “very small number” of al-Qaeda in the country.
“ISIS-K is as you know is of course an enemy of the
Taliban and the issue there is not the will of the Taliban to take them on, it
is their capacity,” he said. “When it comes to the al-Qaeda, the Arab al-Qaeda
core, there are a very, very small number of people.”
Meanwhile, an Afghan female rights activist Shahla
Arifi, underscored women and girls in Afghanistan have been deprived of their
basic rights, including the rights to education, saying they play constructive
role in shaping the country’s future.
“The women and girls of Afghanistan are the future
makers of the country and have not been provided with educational, social and
political rights,” she said.
Earlier this month, a German member of the European
Parliament Hannah Neuman, called for reconsideration to reopening of girls’
school amid firm restrictions that has deprived female students of their
fundamental right – the right to education.
“Girls going back to school on March 23 with hopes for
the future being turned down with tears in their eyes, going back home, and
some of these families literally used their last penny to allow them to go to
school–buy these backpacks, buy these books…” Neuman said, as TOLOnews quoted.
Criticizing the groups leadership in Afghanistan,
Neuman elaborated the knowledge and skills needed to lead a country that
represents citizens of the nation.
“The Taliban are good fighters apparently because they
managed to take over a country, but governing a country needs a rather
different set of skills, it especially needs leaders that listen to the
citizens that they want to represent,” she explained.
This came at a time the Islamic Emirate has shut down
all-girls school across the country since beginning of the Afghan new year in
late March, where both private and government sectors mark a new school
calendar as well.
Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the first Deputy Prime
Minister, gave hope on girls’ education in Afghanistan, saying the issue is
pending for a better decision.
However, he did not shade brighter light on the status
of the decision in progress or the flexibilities the Islamic Emirate may
consider on female education across the country.
“A good action will happen in this [education]
regard,” Baradar said, according to local media. “There may be goodness in this
[education] regard.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education (MoE) expressed
preparedness to comply with the final decision made under the current
leadership should they announce reopening of secondary and high school for
girls.
“This is in the authority of the Islamic Emirate’s
leadership. The Ministry of Education has made preparations—whenever the
leadership of the Islamic Emirate orders, the schools for female students from
grade 7-12 will be reopened,” said Aziz Ahmad Riyan, a spokesman of the MoE, as
TOLOnews quoted.
Last month, the Islamic Emirate on a formal decree
banned female students of grade six and above from attending classes in schools
across the country.

"Blessed Eid": Eid Al Fitr To Begin In
Suffolk As Holy Month Of Ramadan Draws To A Close
Communities come together to
celebrate Eid with large feasts. File image (Image: Manchester Evening News)
-----
By Holly Hume
1 MAY 2022
The holy month of Ramadan has today (May 1) come to an
end, as the new moon is sighted and Ed al Fitr celebrations begin tomorrow
morning. There are two Eid holidays each year in the Islamic calendar and the
first is to mark the end of Ramadan with a celebration of prayer, feasting and
acts of charity.
Eid is held on a different date each year as it
follows the lunar chart, beginning in each country when religious authorities
spot the new moon in the sky. Also known as the lesser Eid, it follows a month
of sunrise to sunset fasting for millions of Muslims across the world and
culminates in festivities which can last between one and three days, dependent
on the country. In the UK it will last from tomorrow (May 2) until Wednesday,
May 4.
Eid Mubarak is an Arabic phrase meaning "Blessed
Eid" and is used for greetings during the religious holiday, however,
there are different phrases for other cultures, such as Urdu, Malay and Spanish
speakers. Celebrations involve several activities, including feasting, prayer,
gift-giving, acts of charity and home decoration. One of the biggest elements
of the celebration is the feasting, as it comes after a long month of fasting,
which is one of the five 'pillars' of Islam. Eid is the reward for Allah's gift
of strength and endurance and is something which Muslims look forward to during
Ramadan.
Prayers begin the Eid celebrations and many Muslims
travel to their local mosque to join in. Ipswich Mosque has a full schedule of
prayers times on Monday, May 2, from 8am to 10.30am. There are also a number of
other mosques across Suffolk which will be holding prayers, as well as those
taking place in community spaces.
Another tradition of the day is Zakat-ul-Fitr - an act
of charity to provide those in poverty with the opportunity to celebrate.
'Zakat' is to be generous to the stranger, the orphan, the widow and the poor.
Donations of £5 minimum can be made at Ipswich Mosque before Eid begins, while
others can donate or participate in different ways.
Once prayers have been finished the feasting begins,
sometimes known as Sweet Eid or the Sugar Feast, and food is a common theme
across all Muslim cultures. Rich and sweet foods are consumed within large
family and community units, with everyone wearing their finest clothes for the
occasion.
Children from Muslim families will likely take the
religious holiday off school, while adults take it off work. Large
get-togethers will be taking place across Suffolk for Eid, with many travelling
to local mosques and community centers to celebrate with loved ones.

“Ramadan Does Not Disturb My Job — Veteran Actor, Saidi Balogun
Blessing Enenaite
1 May 2022
Ramadan is regarded as the holiest month in the Muslim
calendar. The period dedicated to fasting is one when Muslims are expected to
be in a sober mood and keep away from certain activities. For entertainers who
have to be in close contact with members of the opposite sex and alcohol in the
course of doing their jobs, it is expected that Ramadan could limit things that
entertainers can get involved in.
However, veteran actor, Saidi Balogun, says the holy
month does not limit the kind of roles he plays. He told Sunday Scoop, “Ramadan
does not disturb my job. I only limit the time I spend on set during that
period. It does not stop the kind of roles (I play).”
