J&K Court Orders FIR Against Zee News, News18 and Others For Defaming an Islamic Teacher as a 'Pakistani Terrorist' After His Tragic Demise

Srinagar: A court has ordered the Jammu and Kashmir police to file an FIR against Zee News, News18 and other unnamed editors and anchors of TV news networks who falsely labelled a teacher of an Islamic seminary in Poonch as a 'Pakistani terrorist' after his tragic demise during the India-Pakistan military conflict last month.

The court of sub-judge Shafeeq Ahmed on Saturday (June 28) observed that the apology by the accused “does not cure the mischief” caused by their “irresponsible reporting” during a period of heightened tensions in Jammu and Kashmir after India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ against the terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied J&K.

The court asked the J&K police to register an FIR under Sections 353 (2) (public mischief), 356 (defamation) and 196 (1) (promoting enmity between different religious groups) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with section 66 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 (dishonest or fraudulent act using computer).

The FIR has been ordered against “certain news anchors and editorial personnel of national television media houses namely Zee News, News18 and others” for their misleading coverage in the aftermath of the demise of Qari Mohammad Iqbal who worked as a teacher at Jamia Zia-ul-Uloom, one of J&K’s largest Islamic seminaries in Poonch district.

Iqbal was killed in Pakistan’s artillery firing on the morning of May 7 while he was out buying groceries for the students' meal.

The Wire was among the first news outlets which reported the death of Iqbal, one of 12 casualties in Poonch who came under Pakistan’s heavy artillery firing along the 740-km Line of Control in the aftermath of ‘Operation Sindoor’.

Some national media outlets had falsely labelled Iqbal as a "Pakistani terrorist" affiliated with the proscribed Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT) while describing his demise as a "success" for security forces.

Republic World labelled Iqbal a “top LeT commander, involved in major terror attacks, including Pulwama”, CNN News18 described him “Lashkar terrorist” while Zee News called him a “terrorist” killed during Operation Sindoor.

Residents of Poonch who knew Iqbal had staged a protest over the false accusation, prompting a J&K police advisory which warned of “legal action” against the misleading description of a “respected religious figure.”

“Misreporting of such sensitive incidents not only causes unnecessary panic but also disrespects the dignity of the deceased and the sentiments of the bereaved family,” the police advisory had noted, prompting the accused news channels to apologise.

“An apology may have mitigating value at the stage of sentencing but does not preclude the statutory duty of police to register an FIR once a cognizable offence is disclosed,” the court said on Saturday while ordering the Poonch police to carry out a “fair, impartial and time-bound investigation” into the case.

The station house officer (SHO) of Poonch police station was also directed to file a compliance report within seven days.

The court observed that while the freedom of the press was a “vital part of democracy protected under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution”, this freedom was “subject to reasonable restrictions under Article 19(2) on the grounds of defamation, public order, decency or morality".

“In the present act, the act of branding a deceased civilian teacher of a local religious seminary as a ‘Pakistani terrorist’ without any verification, particularly during a period of Indo-Pak hostilities cannot be dismissed as a mere journalistic lapse,” the court said.

The court noted that media houses have “ethical and constitutional obligation” to keep their reports “accurate, fair, and verified”.

“Freedom of the press does not grant a license to publish defamatory or misleading material, and when such conduct results in serious harm to individuals or society at large, it must be addressed in accordance with law,” it said.

The court noted that the misleading reportage by the accused has caused distress to his family, damaged the reputation of the seminary and hurt the religious sentiments of the majority Muslim community in Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier, Sheikh Mohd Saleem, an advocate based in Poonch, had filed an application in the court under section 175 (3) of the BNS, seeking direction to the Poonch SHO to file an FIR against the accused.

Mangaluru Lynching Of A 39-Year-Old Muslim Ragpicker Result Of Hate Crime: Report

By Arun Dev

Five days after terrorists killed 26 tourists in Pahalgam, a 39-year-old Muslim ragpicker from Kerala was beaten to death near a cricket ground near Mangaluru. According to an independent fact-finding report, the lynching was not a spontaneous act of violence but a direct consequence of the “hate-filled atmosphere that followed the April 22 attack”.

On April 27, Mohammed Ashraf, who collected discarded plastic to sell, was lynched in Kudupu, a village on the outskirts of Mangaluru, after allegedly picking up an empty water bottle near a local cricket match. The report — published by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR), and All India Lawyers Association for Justice (AILAJ) — called his murder a “hate crime” shaped by communal mobilisation and police apathy. The 164-page report, Lost Fraternity: A Mob Lynching in Broad Daylight — A Betrayal of the Promise of the Constitution, was released on Saturday.

“As a consequence of this hate propaganda, many people have internalised this hate. Acting out of this hate a mob lynched a Muslim ragpicker – Mohammed Ashraf — next to a cricket ground,” the report stated.

As per the report, the incident took place in a village with no Muslim residents. It cited CCTV footage as showing that Ashraf was walking slowly along a dirt road, carrying a gunny bag. The fact-finding team quoted his brother Jabbar as saying: “Sachin, one of the accused, started beating him up. All the others in the cricket ground joined him and beat my brother to death.”

The family learnt of the incident only after the police tracked a call Ashraf made from a scrap dealer’s phone. The post-mortem examination was conducted without informing them. “After reaching here, I realised that something is wrong. That something else had happened and he said nothing about Pakistan,” he said.

Meanwhile, home minister G Parameshwara made a public claim: “I was told that he shouted ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ when a local cricket match was going on… Few people got together and beat him… Later on, he died.”

According to the report, this statement was not based on any police finding or complaint and surfaced only after arrests were made: “Until this time, neither the police nor any media outlet had reported any claims that the deceased person had shouted the slogan ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ as justification for his murder.”

The next day, the minister appeared to walk back his comment. “It was not my statement. It was an expression made by those who were involved in that lynching… They have said that he said it during the investigation… But even that, a witness who would second that no? We don’t even know if he said it.”

“By modifying and stating this unevidenced claim of the accused without verification, the home minister facilitated a travesty of justice, and gave fodder to the media to ask questions not about the man’s killing, but about his alleged speech of ‘Pakistan Zindabad’,” the report said.

The fact-finding team said the police failed at every step. The body was discovered at 1.30 pm, but the FIR was filed the next day at 11.25 pm. Until then, only an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) was registered, despite visible injuries. “The version that there were no visible injuries was not only misleading but dangerously delayed justice.”

Police also did not apply Supreme Court guidelines on lynching cases. When asked about the Tehseen Poonawalla judgment, the assistant investigating officer told the team: “We don’t know much about the Tehseen Poonawalla guidelines, you talk to the higher officials about the same.”

Ashraf’s identification was eventually made possible by a scrap dealer named Syed Ali.

Kudupu, where the lynching occurred, has witnessed growing communal segregation. In 2023, Muslim vendors were excluded from the local temple fair. “Such pressures by groups to exclude Muslim vendors speak to the presence of right-wing groups in the region and the anti-Muslim sentiments they have succeeded in normalising, which are often precursors to violent acts like mob lynchings,” the report noted.

Home minister G Parameshwara did not respond to queries regarding the investigation at the time of publishing.

NYC mayoral frontrunner Mamdani: 'I don't think we should have billionaires'

June 30, 2025

Nadine Yousif

Mamdani made history last week as the first Muslim American to win a mayoral primary race in New York City

----------

Zohran Mamdani, who is the Democratic candidate for New York City mayor after a stunning victory last week, has said no-one should have billions of dollars.

In an interview with NBC, Mamdani also stood by his proposal to tax "richer and whiter" neighborhoods, arguing the city's property tax system is unfair.

The 33-year-old defended his democratic socialism, rejecting an accusation from US President Donald Trump that he is a communist.

If elected in November, he would be the first Muslim and Indian American to lead the nation's largest city.

Mamdani ran an energetic campaign focused on affordability, promising free buses, universal childcare, a $30 minimum hourly wage, a rent freeze and city-run supermarkets - all paid for with higher taxes on the top 1% of earners.

On NBC's Meet the Press programme on Sunday, he was asked whether billionaires have a right to exist.

"I don't think that we should have billionaires because, frankly, it is so much money in a moment of such inequality," he replied.

New York's mayor has the power to propose a hike on property taxes, but revenue increases ultimately require approval from the state legislature and the governor.

NBC interviewer Kristen Welker asked Mamdani about a policy proposal on his campaign website to shift the tax burden "to more expensive homes in richer and whiter neighborhoods".

Asked whether he might alienate key constituents by invoking race, he denied the policy was driven by race and said: "I think I'm just naming things as they are."

In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, President Trump threatened to cut off federal funding for New York City if Mamdani wins, calling him a "pure communist".

Mamdani denied being a communist, adding: "I have already to start to get used to the fact that the president will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I'm from, who I am, ultimately because he wants to distract from what I am fighting for."

He said New York is "the wealthiest city in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, and yet one in four New Yorkers are living in poverty".

Millionaires in New York pay 41% of all personal income tax, according to the state Department of Taxation and Finance.

In last week's Democratic primary, Mamdani defeated his main intraparty challenger, Andrew Cuomo, who resigned as New York governor in 2021 after sexual harassment allegations.

Mamdani has been under scrutiny for his stance on the Israel-Gaza war, after voicing strong support for Palestinians and accusing Israel of genocide, which it denies.

He was asked about these views in the NBC interview, and whether he would condemn the term "globalise the intifada".

Many Jews argue this slogan is an antisemitic call for violence, but pro-Palestinian activists say it is a call for international solidarity with Palestinians.

"That's not the language that I use," said Mamdani, adding that he condemns antisemitism. When pressed, he said it was not the role of the mayor to "police speech".

On NBC, he sought to draw a contrast between himself and the Trump administration, whom he criticised for detaining Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Palestinian activist at Columbia University and a lawful US resident.

Mamdani has described "globalise the intifada" in the past as "a desperate desire for equality and equal rights in standing up for Palestinian human rights".

RIYADH: The Islamic Center in London hosted a meeting between Muslim World League Secretary-General Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa and Islamic leaders from across the UK this week.

The discussion focused on the need for wisdom in guiding Muslim communities, especially in the face of provocation by extremists. Speakers stressed the importance of responding with calm and restraint, following the Prophet’s example of mercy and patience.

Al-Issa highlighted the need for unified religious authority in issuing fatwas and public religious guidance. He announced that the MWL-affiliated Islamic Fiqh Council — a leading body in Islamic jurisprudence — would soon hold a forum at the center to discuss the jurisprudence of Muslim communities.

The forum will also explore the creation of a reference framework for this jurisprudence, to be updated as needed. It will review training programs and initiatives in the UK aligned with the Charter of Makkah and propose its inclusion in Islamic education curricula.

Al-Issa emphasized protecting Muslim youth from extremist ideologies, noting the family’s role, the importance of balanced religious education, qualified teachers, and effective use of platforms such as sermons and lectures.

He praised the British Muslim community’s awareness and commitment, describing it as a positive example of Islamic values in a diverse society.

The meeting included questions and feedback, with attendees expressing support for the MWL’s global work. They welcomed Al-Issa’s visit, especially given the current context, and appreciated his approach to addressing Islamophobia.

Participants also backed the league’s efforts to unify local religious authority, citing its success in other minority communities.

They viewed this as a long-awaited step, and said that Al-Issa’s message strengthened trust in the MWL’s mission of promoting social cohesion and peaceful coexistence, values rooted in Islamic teachings.

Jeddah panel explores declining marriage rates among youth

--------

JEDDAH: Amid changing values, shifting priorities and growing alternatives to traditional partnerships, a panel titled “Why is there a decline in marriage today?” has explored evolving views on love, commitment and marriage.

Organized by Ta3mq, a platform focused on honest dialogue, the event at Hayy Jameel’s Rukn Space in Jeddah featured panelists from psychology, community leadership and youth engagement.

It was moderated by Tasneem Alshanqiti, Ta3mq founder, and Motaz Al-Safh, a Saudi engineer and entrepreneur. The session addressed generational concerns, fears and new definitions of partnership.

Reflecting on her role, Alshanqiti said: “I wasn’t just moderating — I was carrying the voice of younger women,” adding that she aimed to create a safe space that encouraged openness and reflection.

Panelist Rozana Albanawi, founder of Qeema and Jeddah_CM, said that the discussion explored marriage from societal, religious and psychological perspectives, focusing on self-understanding, compatibility over idealism, and the evolution of love.

Al-Safh said that he focused on creating a safe, judgment-free space for men to express vulnerability.

He described the conversation as “more like a talk between brothers than a formal panel,” aiming to help participants understand their fears and feelings about love and commitment.

The discussion highlighted recurring themes among Saudi youth. Al-Safh said that a few key issues kept emerging: Fear of failure, feeling unready, and pressure from expectations. Many question whether marriage today feels like love or a liability.

He added: “But beneath it all, there’s a real craving for connection, just done right, in a way that feels safe and meaningful.”

Dr. Khalid Sindi, a relationship and marriage psychotherapist, offered a broader national perspective by linking personal challenges to policy and social change.

Speaking to Arab News, he noted the ongoing transition in Saudi marriage values — from traditional to more modern — while emphasizing the preservation of core Islamic principles.

He highlighted government efforts under Vision 2030, such as the Saudi Marriage Fund and Sakani housing program, aimed at easing economic barriers for youth.

Sindi added: “Younger generations are seeking marriages that blend our cherished traditions with contemporary expectations of emotional connection and mutual growth. This represents not a rejection of our values but their natural adaptation to modern life.”

The panelists said that changing views on love and commitment reflected maturity rather than uncertainty.

Albanawi said: “There is high awareness among the generation now on marital topics, and many are seeking marriage with the right tools.”

She explained that conversation and dialogue help young people to commit while accepting uncertainty in relationships.

“The younger generation is looking for new ways to shape their marriage, such as avoiding unnecessary rules like high financial burdens or societal expectations that don’t match their reality.”

On the event’s outcome, Albanawi added: “A common theme was that marriages work best when couples marry early, are ready, and have family support.”

She noted that many believe delaying marriage increases fears and makes adaptation harder.

Sindi expressed a similar view on marriage’s evolving nature, saying that the changing views reflected progress and natural generational dynamics rather than fear or uncertainty.

“Rather than seeing shifting perspectives as problematic, the older generation should guide younger Saudis with wisdom and empathy.”

Highlighting the national context, Sindi noted the vital role of government initiatives in supporting Saudi Arabia’s vision for marriage and family life, demonstrating a commitment to making families society’s cornerstone.

Reflecting on the session’s emotional honesty, Al-Safh said that hearing men express concerns such as, “I don’t want to fail someone’s daughter,” revealed deep care often left unspoken.

Alshanqiti echoed the need for open, non-judgmental spaces, saying fears about failure and not being enough reminded her that many seek places where they can be truly seen and heard. She described the session as a step toward that openness.

Minor Dalit UP Girl Rescued From Kerala After Alleged Forced Conversion to Islam

 Jun 30, 2025

A minor Dalit girl from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly taken from her village in Prayagraj to Kerala, where she was forcibly converted to Islam and pressured to train for Jihad. The case came to light after a woman, Guddi Devi, filed a complaint on June 28, saying her daughter was taken from her village by a local woman named Kahkashan, also referred to as Darkasha Bano, who offered her money and promised better prospects.

The Prayagraj police suspect the involvement of an organised network targeting poor and Dalit girls, and are coordinating with Kerala Police to investigate further.

According to the police, the minor girl went missing on the night of May 8 after attending the wedding of a local ration dealer in her native village, Lilhat. She was last seen around 10 pm. At the event, 19-year-old Bano, also a resident of the same village, allegedly lured the girl by offering money and speaking to her about the virtues of Islam.

Bano then called Mohammad Kaif, a resident of Phulpur, who arrived on a motorcycle and took both Bano and the girl to Prayagraj Railway Junction. Kuldeep Singh Gunawat, DCP Ganga Nagar, said, “During this, the victim was also molested in the Kaif.”

From Prayagraj, Bano and the minor travelled to Delhi and then to Thrissur in Kerala by train. During the journey, Bano was reportedly in frequent contact with a man named Taj Mohammad, informing him that she was on her way and had a girl with her.

According to the girl’s statement, upon reaching Thrissur, she was taken to a house where several other minor girls and men with long beards were present. She said they pressured her to convert to Islam and discussed training for Jihad. The girl became frightened and managed to escape to Thrissur railway station, where local police found her and informed her family. She was placed under the care of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Kerala.

Her family, with assistance from the Phulpur Police, brought her back to Prayagraj. She has been admitted to the One Stop Centre in the district. A case was registered on June 28 after her mother, Guddi Devi, filed a formal complaint. “A receipt for action was given at Phulpur police station, on which a case was registered under relevant sections,” said DCP Gunawat.

In the same complaint, Guddi Devi reported that Bano had threatened her. “On June 28, a complaint was lodged at the Police Station Phulpur by Guddi Devi, resident of Lilhat village, in which she informed that on May 8, 19-year-old Bano, daughter of Mohammad Ismail, also a resident of Lilhat, called from an unknown number and threatened to kill her,” the DCP said.

Following the complaint, police visited the victim’s home, questioned her, and deployed security personnel at the residence. Both Bano and Kaif have been arrested in the case.

DCP Gunawat stated that Bano appears to be connected to a Kerala-based module involved in converting minor girls through inducement and coercion and then training them for Jihad. “From the above mentioned report, it is known that the accused Bano is a part of an organised gang also involved in terrorist and anti-national activities by luring poor and Dalit girls, brainwashing them and forcing them to convert their religion,” he said.

“Taj Mohammad,” who Bano contacted multiple times during the journey, is on the radar of Prayagraj Police. He is believed to be based in Thrissur, and Kerala Police have begun a search for him. Prayagraj Police have shared preliminary findings with their counterparts in Kerala.

Gunawat confirmed that three police teams have been formed to investigate the activities of Bano and others linked to the case. “A thorough investigation is being conducted into the activities of Darkasha Bano. Strict action will be taken against others found involved. They will investigate this matter thoroughly,” he said.

Demolition Of 300-Year-Old Dargah: Gujarat HC Issues Contempt Notice To Junagadh Municipal Corporation Officers

by Aditi Raja

June 29, 2025

Stating that the officers of the Junagadh Municipal Corporation had “prima facie acted in defiance” of the directions of the Supreme Court as well as a subsequent policy of the state government in demolishing a 300-year-old Dargah, the Gujarat High Court on Friday issued a contempt notice to the then Municipal Commissioner Om Prakash and Senior Town Planner Vivek Kiran Parekh. The court was hearing an application moved by the Trustee of the Jok Alisha Dargah, a registered (Waqf) trust, under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, for “non-compliance and disobedience” of a 2018 order of the apex court.

A Division Bench of Justice A S Supehia and Justice R T Vachhani, in an oral order on Friday, issued the notice based on the 2018 order to remit cases of “existing unauthorized construction of the religious nature” to the respective High Courts.

The petition, filed in May this year, challenged the midnight demolition of the 300-year old dargah on April 17 by the Junagadh civic body, following multiple notices issued by the Senior Town Planner, contending that the civic body “did not consider” the reliance on the SC order as well as the fact of a pending civil petition before the High Court in the matter.

Stating that the dargah was registered as Jok Alisha Dargah Trust on April 8, 1964, the petition states, “The Jok Alisha Dargah has been situated at Gandhi Chowk in Junagadh since before India’s independence and is about 300 years old. The Muslim community and other devotees have regularly performed religious rites and observances at the Dargah. Further, annual Urs celebrations have also been held with prior permissions, including the use of loudspeakers.”

The petition relied on the order by the Supreme Court, which ruled that the High Courts concerned must supervise the implementation of the interim orders of the apex court in matters of regularization of the existing religious structures on public places, which had been under deliberation before the Supreme Court since 2006.

The Gujarat HC order on Friday stated, “It appears that the Supreme Court, initially passed an order on September 29, 2009, directing that by an interim measure, no unauthorized construction shall be carried out or permitted in the name of Temple, Church, Mosque or Gurudwara etc., on public streets, public parks or other public places. Further directions were issued that the unauthorized construction of the religious nature, which had already taken place (prior to the order), the State Governments and the Union Territories shall review the same on a case-to-case basis and take appropriate steps as expeditiously as possible…” The 2018 order of the top court also stated that “the interim orders wherever passed, shall continue, until the matters are considered by the High Court”.

The Gujarat HC order also referred to a state government policy dated April 19, 2024 that stipulates the constitution of committees by the Municipal Commissioner and District Collectors, as well as the appointment of Nodal Officers. The policy empowers the committee to prescribe various steps, such as the removal, relocation, and regularisation of unauthorised constructions.

The court order noted that the Senior Town Planner of the Junagadh civic body issued a notice on January 31 this year to the petitioner for removing the alleged unauthorised dargah and called upon the petitioner for submission of necessary documents pertaining to the ownership within three days. The petitioner replied and complied, by submitting documents on February 3, 2025, also “pointing out the directions issued by the Supreme Court along with the relevant documents about the ownership and the local authorities… referencing also to the proceedings pending before this Court (in a 2006 Special Civil Application)…”

The court further noted that the Senior Town Planner issued a “last notice” on April 9, 2025, calling upon the applicant to remove the disputed structure within five days. While the petitioner replied on April 15 this year reiterating the request and pointing out that the dargah had been there for the last 300 years, on April 17, the respondents demolished it.

The court order stated, “Prima facie, at this stage, we are of the opinion that the respondents have acted in defiance of the directions of the Supreme Court and the Policy dated April 19, 2024. Since liberty is reserved in favour of the respective High Courts to proceed in Contempt if any of the directions issued by the Supreme Court are violated, we deem appropriate to call upon the respondents… Issue notice (to the two respondents), making it returnable on July 28.”

Earlier in June, Prakash was transferred and appointed as the District Collector of Rajkot while Tejas Parmar took over as the Municipal Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation.

A massive rally against the Waqf Act was organised by the Imarat-e-Shariah at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan on Sunday, drawing a large turnout. The Imarat-e-Shariah represents Muslims of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal.

The conference raised a united and dignified voice against the Waqf Act, 2025, which is widely seen as trampling upon the Islamic principles of Waqf (charitable endowment), undermining religious autonomy, and infringing upon fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of India.

Several political outfits, including the Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Samajwadi Party, and AIMIM, extended their support to the conference, stating that this demonstration was important not only for the protection of Waqf properties but also for safeguarding constitutional rights.

The political leaders also voiced strong opposition to the Waqf Act, arguing it harms the Muslim community and should be scrapped.

Addressing the rally, Congress leader Salman Khurshid said their opposition to the Waqf Amendment Act was entirely legitimate, asserting that their collective resistance to this law, which they see as infringing on the rights of the Muslim community, would ultimately succeed.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav reaffirmed his party’s strong opposition to the Waqf Act, vowing not to allow its implementation in Bihar.

“We will send the Waqf Act to the dustbin,” he declared, adding that the RJD, under Lalu Prasad Yadav’s leadership, has consistently opposed the bill in both Houses of Parliament and even raised the issue before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) and the Supreme Court.

“Whether in the House, on the streets, or in the courts, we are with the people in this struggle,” he asserted.

Tejashwi also targeted the ruling dispensation, stating, “Those who have harmed the Constitution will have to relinquish power after the October-November polls in Bihar, and a pro-poor government will be formed.”

AIMIM state president and MLA Akhtarul Iman declared, “Both India’s Constitution and Islamic Shariah law are vital to us. Muslims cannot survive without Shariah. We will crush anyone attempting to eliminate it.”

Operation Sindoor jet loss owing to Modi government 'constraint': Captain Shiv Kumar

Imran Ahmed Siddiqui

30.06.25

India lost “some” combat jets on May 7, the opening day of Operation Sindoor, because of the “constraint given by the political leadership” against striking Pakistani military establishments and air defences, India’s defence attaché in Indonesia told a seminar in Jakarta.

Captain Shiv Kumar’s comments have sparked fresh controversy with the Congress accusing the government of having “misled” the country and “compromised national security”.

Kumar made the comments at a seminar at a Jakarta university on June 10. His remarks, however, went unnoticed until a video surfaced on Sunday.

Kumar, a navy officer, said: “I do agree that we did lose some aircraft and that happened only because of the constraint given by the political leadership to not attack the military establishments and their air defences.”

A navy captain is equivalent to a colonel in the army

“But after the loss, we changed our tactics and went for their military installations.” Kumar said.

“We first achieved (the) suppression of enemy air defences and destruction of enemy air defences and that’s why all our attacks could easily go through using

surface-to-air missiles and surface-to-surface missiles.”

Sources in the defence ministry declined to comment on Kumar’s remarks.

The official X account of the Indian embassy in Indonesia said on Sunday night that Kumar’s remarks “have been quoted out of context and the media reports are a mis-representation of the intention and thrust of the presentation made by the speaker”.

“The presentation conveyed that the Indian Armed Forces serve under civilian political leadership unlike some other countries in our neighbourhood,” the embassy’s post said.

The post said: "It was also explained that the objective of Operation Sindoor was to target terrorist infrastructure and the Indian response was non-escalatory."

The Narendra Modi government has so far not said anything on the loss of aircraft during the military conflict although the country’s top military general, Anil Chauhan, had earlier this month admitted that India lost combat jets because of a "tactical mistake" during Operation Sindoor.

Chauhan, the Chief of Defence Staff, had in interviews with Bloomberg TV and Reuters in Singapore said India had lost fighter jets on the opening day of Operation Sindoor but swiftly rectified its tactical mistakes and launched further attacks to "hit deep inside Pakistan" on the subsequent days.

He had dismissed Pakistan’s claim that it had shot down six Indian fighter jets as “absolutely incorrect”, but did not say how many planes India lost.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera on Sunday issued a scathing statement, accusing the Modi government of deliberately concealing the truth.

“The Modi government has misled the nation from the start — failing to disclose the aircraft losses during Operation Sindoor,” Khera said on X.

“There were oblique references to losses in air combat on 6/7 May, during a briefing by the DG Air Ops (Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti) when he said — ‘We are in a combat situation and losses are a part of combat,’” Khera wrote.

“Then, it was left to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, to make the first official admission of our attrition in the air while speaking to Bloomberg TV on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore,” he added.

“And now, in another shocking revelation by Capt. Shiv Kumar, it has emerged that the Indian Air Force lost fighter jets to Pakistan on the night of May 7 during its targeting of Pakistan’s terror-linked sites ‘only because of the constraint given by the political leadership’,” Khera said.

“This is a direct indictment of the Modi government, particularly defence minister Rajnath Singh. No wonder they are ducking our demand for a special session of Parliament like the plague. They know they’ve compromised national security, and they’re terrified of what the Congress party will expose before the people of India.”

West Bengal alleges Odisha has detained nearly 100 of its migrants claiming they are Bangladeshis

Scroll Staff

Jun 30, 2025

The West Bengal government has alleged that nearly 100 migrant workers from the state have been detained in Odisha and “sent to detention centres” on suspicion of being Bangladeshis, The Indian Express reported on Monday.

In May, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Odisha government launched a statewide operation to identify and deport undocumented Bangladeshi migrants living in the state.

Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP and chairman of West Bengal’s Migrant Welfare Board Samirul Islam has said that “top administrative officials and police officers…have reached out to their counterparts in Odisha” regarding the alleged illegal detentions, the newspaper reported.

“But they are not releasing the poor migrant workers,” Islam was quoted as saying on Monday. “What has happened is unconstitutional”.

He added: “They are Indian citizens and residents of Bengal. They have gone to Odisha for work. But they have been detained and labelled Bangaldeshis. They have been sent to the detention centre. We will bring them home”.

The Rajya Sabha MP claimed that this trend is happening in “state after state under BJP rule”.

However, an unidentified Odisha government official told The Indian Express that “no one is being detained at any police station”.

The government is conducting verifications as part of a nationwide exercise in view of the recent developments in the neighbourhood, the official added.

“We are just verifying their identities and are also in touch with West Bengal government,” the newspaper quoted the official as saying.

The development comes nearly two weeks after four men from West Bengal, who had been picked up by the Maharashtra Police and “pushed” into Bangladesh, were brought back on June 15. The Murshidabad Police in West Bengal had presented proof of them being Indian citizens.

Over the past month, Indian authorities have been pursuing a policy to push individuals claimed to be undocumented migrants into Bangladesh. India has pushed back more than 2,000 persons into Bangladesh since the country launched “Operation Sindoor”, a military operation against terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The legality of the “push back” policy has been debated in India and internationally. Experts have told Scroll that the policy violated India’s obligations under international law and customary international law.

Unnao area tense after removal of Khamenei’s poster

Jun 29, 2025

Kanpur: A controversy erupted in Maurawan town of Unnao district after the removal of a poster of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. Shia cleric Maulana Yasub Abbas strongly condemned the action, stating that any insult to Ayatollah Khamenei would not be tolerated, reports Faiz Siddiqui. He has demanded strict action against those responsible for the act. The cleric said that Khamenei is regarded as the highest religious leader by the global Shia community and insulting him is an insult to the entire community.

As soon as the information spread, a crowd gathered at the scene to witness the event. After the video went viral on social media, the police took action and inspected the site. Removal of the poster captioned ‘Our Leader, Our Pride' caused a stir in the nearby areas. The situation has garnered support from religious organisations in adjacent districts, which, whilst standing with the Shia community, have advised their supporters to remain peaceful and seek resolution through appropriate channels.

Maurawan police station incharge Kunwar Bahadur Singh said that the individuals who initially displayed the poster voluntarily removed it, considering public sentiment before an upcoming festival. Meanwhile, Unnao police also reported on 'X' that they spoke with the two individuals who put up a poster of Iran's leader on the wall of their house in Saiyyadbara and asked them to remove it. Subsequently, the two individuals took down the poster.

Maulana Yasub Abbas expressed strong opposition to the incident, declaring that disrespect towards Ayatollah Khamenei is unacceptable. He called for firm action against the responsible parties.

Local police have intensified vigil to maintain peace in the region.

'Not the language I use': NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani sidesteps condemning 'globalise intifada' phrase; vows to protect Jewish community

Jun 30, 2025

New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani sidestepped from addressing concerns about the phrase "globalize the intifada" while asserting his commitment to protecting Jewish residents, in a recent "Meet the Press" interview with NBC's Kristen Welker

Mamdani said, "That's not language that I use," and emphasised his leadership would be guided by universal human rights principles. “The language that I use and the language that I will continue to use to lead this city is that which speaks clearly to my intent, which is an intent grounded in a belief in universal human rights," he said as quoted by Politico.

Following his unexpected triumph in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary against former Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mamdani faced scrutiny for his stance on the controversial phrase prior to the election.

In response to questions, he didn't directly talk about it but revealed plans to substantially increase anti-hate crime programme funding by 800 percent. The November election will see him compete against incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, with possible participation from Cuomo. "I've heard from many Jewish New Yorkers who have shared their concerns with me, especially in light of the horrific attacks that we saw in Washington, DC and in Boulder, Colorado, about this moment of antisemitism in our country and in our city," Mamdani told Welker. "And I've heard those fears, and I've had those conversations."

The term "intifada", historically associated with Palestinian resistance against Israel since 1987, has raised concerns among Jewish communities when coupled with "globalize", as it potentially implies worldwide violence against Jews.

Mamdani received support from Jewish Democrat Rep. Jerry Nadler through an endorsement on Wednesday. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer offered congratulations via social media, though without formal endorsement. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand urged Mamdani on Thursday to reject the controversial term.

Post-victory, Mamdani encountered religious prejudice, particularly from MAGA supporters, including Donald Trump Jr., who posted on X: "New York City has fallen."

Who is Zohran Mamdani?

Zohran Mamdani, 33, is a democratic socialist, chosen as the mayoral of New York City, having defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo in a ranked-choice primary. Born in Uganda to Indian-origin parents- filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood Mamdani—he moved to New York at age seven and later earned a degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College. A Shia Muslim and former state assemblyman from Queens, Mamdani has built his political career around housing rights, transit affordability, and immigrant advocacy, gaining strong support from young, progressive voters.

CAIR Applauds U.S. Sen. Hollen’s Strong Condemnation of Anti-Muslim Bigotry Targeting NY Assemblymember

June 29, 2025

Washington, D.C., based civil rights group calls on all lawmakers to similarly repudiate hate-filled attacks

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today applauded U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) for his unwavering stand against the alarming surge of anti-Muslim bigotry targeting New York Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani.

In a social media post, Senator Van Hollen wrote in part:

“Shame on the members of Congress who have engaged in such bigotry and anyone who doesn’t challenge it.”

CAIR is calling on lawmakers at every level of the government to exhibit moral courage and similarly publicly repudiate these attacks and urges members of Congress and public officials to take a firm stance against hate speech and bigotry in all its forms.

“We should all be appalled by the flood of anti-Muslim remarks, both blatant and latent, that have surfaced against Mr. Mamdani,” said CAIR Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry. “Such hate-filled rhetoric not only undermines the core values of inclusion and respect but also threatens the safety and dignity of Muslim communities across the country. It is our shared responsibility to stand against hate and promote a society rooted in justice, understanding and equality.”

Last week, Washington, D.C.-based CAIR sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi urging the Department of Justice to swiftly and publicly reject Representative Andy Ogles’ (R-TN) racist and Islamophobic demand that the federal government pursue denaturalization proceedings against Mamdani.

Rep. Ogles’ announcement of his request to the Justice Department was accompanied by an unhinged public post on social media in which he referred to Assemblymember Mamdani as “little muhammad,” a bigoted reference meant to demean both Mamdani and the Muslim faith. In his letter to the Justice Department, Ogles—who has previously been accused of saying that all children in Gaza should be killed—baselessly cites Mr. Mamdani’s political speech as grounds for stripping him of his citizenship.

CAIR remains committed to advocating for the rights and dignity of all Americans, regardless of faith or background.

Earlier this year, CAIR released its 2025 Civil Rights Report “Unconstitutional Crackdowns,” which reveals that Islamophobia continues to be at an all-time high across the country. CAIR said viewpoint discrimination against those speaking out against genocide and apartheid was a key factor in many cases.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

'Not offering Iran anything': Donald Trump refuses to talk with Tehran; attacks Obama-era policy

Jun 30, 2025

US President Donald Trump said that he is "not talking or giving anything" to Tehran after the deputy foreign minister has put a condition on any future diplomatic and nuclear talks with America. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, "Tell phony Democrat Senator Chris Coons that I am not offering Iran ANYTHING, unlike Obama, who paid them $Billions under the stupid “road to a Nuclear Weapon JCPOA (which would now be expired!), nor am I even talking to them since we totally OBLITERATED their Nuclear Facilities."

This came after Tehran's deputy foreign minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi said the US must rule out any further strikes on Iran if it wants to resume diplomatic talks.

He revealed to BBC that the Trump administration communicated via intermediaries about resuming negotiations this week.

However, he noted that they failed to clarify their stance regarding potential attacks during the discussion period.Discussions between the US and Iran concerning Iran's nuclear programme were ongoing when Israel conducted strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and military installations earlier this month, prompting Iran to launch missile counterstrikes.

The US entered the conflict directly on June 21 when it conducted bombing operations against three Iranian nuclear facilities.

Earlier, a CNN report came that the Trump administration in recent days has explored possible economic incentives in return for the Iranian regime halting uranium enrichment. Iran would also be allowed to receive assistance from regional countries to help it build the civilian nuclear programme, granting Tehran access to as much as the reported $30 billion.

However, Trump refuted the claims and called it a fake and hoax news. He said, "Who in the FAKE NEWS MEDIA is the SleazeBag saying that 'President Trump wants to give Iran $30 billion to build non-military Nuclear facilities.' Never heard of this ridiculous idea."

"It's just another HOAX put out by the Fake News in order to demean. These people are SICK!!!," the MAGA leader added.

Auckland Muslim school Al-Madinah among those hoping to become charter schools

June 30, 2025

Just two state or state-integrated schools have applied to become charter schools next year.

One of the schools was Auckland Muslim school Al-Madinah, which said charter status would help it expand, and open new campuses on Auckland's North Shore and in Christchurch.

It also said it would provide more flexibility around its curriculum and opening hours, which could be altered to accommodate events like Ramadan.

Associate Education Minister David Seymour had talked up the likelihood some state-sector schools would want to switch.

The first seven charters that opened this year were all new entities serving distinct or niche student groups.

The most likely candidates for conversion were former charter schools forced to become state-integrated or special-character schools, after a change in government in 2017.

State-integrated schools were the next logical candidates, because they had a special character, often religious, that set them apart from regular state schools and, like charters, their property was owned by a third party, such as a church or a trust.

Converting a regular state school would be a coup for the programme and RNZ was aware of one in the early stages of considering an application.

Meanwhile, Al-Madinah School principal Asin Ali told RNZ charter status would make it much easier for the school to expand.

He said the school had a wait-list of 1500 students and was limited to a maximum roll of about 550, agreed with the Education Ministry.

Ali said those restrictions would be removed if the school became a charter, allowing its Māngere campus to take about 700 students, based on Auckland City Council regulations.

In addition, the school's sponsor wanted to open a new campus in Auckland's Blockhouse Bay that could take about 400-500 students and another school in Christchurch next year.

Ali said that could be done with a single principal and sponsor under charter school rules, instead of requiring new principals for each school.

He said integrated status had been perfect for teaching religion and culture, but it also meant the maximum roll was capped and could not increase, unless the school first spent a lot of money on property.

"With the charter school system, there's no real cap, except for what I understand the council allows you, so you can build as you are growing," he said.

The Māngere-based school opened in 1992 and became a state-integrated school in 1996. Education Ministry figures showed it had 592 students last year.

The Charter School Agency said it had received six expressions of interest and two applications from schools wanting to convert to charter schools by Friday's deadline.

It said, in the first application round last year, it received four applications from state or state-integrated schools wanting to convert.

The agency said state and state-integrated schools could submit an expression of interest at any time, but those wanting to convert next year faced a 16 June deadline, with an 8 October deadline for applications.

Seymour recently told the Education and Workforce Committee "a number" of state schools were working on conversion to charter status.

"We're not identifying those at this point, but there's going to be quite a few, and I think people are going to be very, very impressed by what they see," he said.

"As I understand it, the conversions are going very well. Good community support, good staff support... I think a few people are going to be surprised by some of the people doing the converting."

Republican Senator Thom Tillis to leave Congress after clash with Trump

June 30, 2025

Nadine Yousif

A Republican US senator from North Carolina has said he will not run for reelection next year, a day after he opposed a sprawling budget bill that is key to President Donald Trump's agenda.

Thom Tillis, 64, announced he would leave Congress because he said independent thinkers in Washington had become "an endangered species".

Trump criticised Tillis on Saturday for not backing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and threatened to support other candidates.

The president has also denounced other fellow Republican lawmakers who oppose his bill, including Senator Rand Paul and congressman Thomas Massie, both of Kentucky.

A final Senate vote on passage of the spending plan is expected in the coming days. It narrowly cleared the House of Representatives last month.

Tillis has held public office in North Carolina since 2007 and has been a senator since 2015.

In his statement on Sunday, he said he was proud of his career in public service, and especially of what he called "bipartisan victories".

"Sometimes those bipartisan initiatives got me in trouble with my own party, but I wouldn't have changed a single one," he wrote.

He added that in recent years lawmakers who are "willing to embrace bipartisanship, compromise, and demonstrate independent thinking" have become a rare sight in Washington.

"Too many elected officials are motivated by pure raw politics who really don't give a damn about the people they promised to represent on the campaign trail," Tillis wrote.

On Sunday, Trump called Tillis "a talker and complainer".

He was one of two Republican senators who voted against advancing Trump's spending and tax cuts bill on Saturday.

Tillis said the legislation's cuts to Medicaid, a healthcare programme that is used by millions of elderly, disabled and low-income Americans, would be "devastating" to people in North Carolina.

The bill proposes a work requirement on most adults in order to qualify for benefits.

It also reduces the amount of taxes states can charge medical providers, the funds from which are used heavily to finance Medicaid.

"I did my homework on behalf of North Carolinians, and I cannot support this bill in its current form," Tillis said on Saturday. "It would result in tens of billions of dollars in lost funding for North Carolina."

Republicans who support the bill have dismissed Tillis' criticism, saying the proposed changes to Medicaid will eliminate fraud and waste and ensure the programme is viable in the long run.

The Congressional Budget Office, a non-partisan federal agency, estimated late on Saturday that the changes would result in nearly 12 million Americans losing their health coverage.

Trump has also threatened to back another candidate in the Republican primary ahead of next year's midterm elections, saying he would be meeting with "numerous" contenders to challenge Tillis.

Speculation is already rife that Lara Trump, the president's daughter-in-law and a North Carolina native, might run for the seat, though she has not commented.

Trump has issued similar threats to other lawmakers who have not supported his marquee bill.

US news outlet Politico reported on Sunday, citing anonymous sources, that the White House was looking for challengers to Thomas Massie.

Trump dubbed Massie a "loser" in a post on the Truth Social platform last week.

"He votes, 'NO!' on everything, because he thinks it makes him cool," the president wrote.

Trump says he has 'a group of very wealthy people' to buy TikTok

Laura Blasey

June 30, 2025

President Donald Trump has said he has a buyer for TikTok, the video-sharing app that was banned in the US amid claims it posed a national security risk.

In a Fox News interview, Trump said he had a group of "very wealthy people" willing to acquire the platform. "I'll tell you in about two weeks," he teased.

A sale would need approval from the Chinese government, but Trump told Fox he thought President Xi Jinping "will probably do it".

This month Trump delayed for a third time the enforcement of a law mandating TikTok's sale.

The latest extension requires parent company ByteDance to reach a deal to sell the platform by 17 September.

The BBC has contacted TikTok for comment.

A previous deal to sell TikTok to an American buyer fell apart in April, when the White House clashed with China over Trump's tariffs.

It is not clear if the current buyer Trump says he has has lined up is the same as the one who was waiting in the wings three months ago.

The US Congress passed a law forcing TikTok's sale in April last year, with lawmakers citing fears that the app or its parent company could hand over US user data to the Chinese government, which TikTok denied.

Trump had criticised the app during his first term, but came to see it as a factor in his 2024 election win and now supports its continued use in the US.

The law was supposed to take effect on 19 January, but Trump has repeatedly delayed its enforcement through executive actions, moves that have drawn criticism for overruling congressional lawmakers.

TikTok challenged the constitutionality of the law, but lost its appeal to the US Supreme Court.

Labour wants to silence criticism of Islam

30th June 2025

Would you ask a panel of committed vegans to provide objective, balanced advice on a national dietary policy? Only if you were looking for an entirely biased response. Yet this is effectively what the British government is doing on the question of whether the public should be free to criticise Islam.

This is why the Free Speech Union (FSU) recently wrote to deputy prime minister Angela Rayner. In particular, the FSU is alaramed about the government’s new ‘Working Group on Anti-Muslim Hatred and Islamophobia’ – a miniature Labour quango tasked with articulating an ‘official’ definition of Islamophobia. It should concern anyone concerned about free speech.

Chaired by former Conservative MP and attorney general Dominic Grieve KC, the working group is marked by secrecy and ideological rigidity. Its terms of reference make clear that the advice it gives to ministers will remain private and unpublished – in direct contravention of the government’s own code of conduct. And the group’s members clearly believe ‘Islamophobia’ – that is, the criticism of Islam and related practices – represents a unique threat to British society. It is a recipe for censorship.

There are also serious concerns about the way the group has gone about ‘consulting’ the public. For example, a recent ‘call for evidence’ on Islamophobia was launched without notice, and only came to light after being leaked. Unsurprisingly, the consultation was skewed towards a pre-determined outcome – in this case, a definition mirroring that which the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on British Muslims cooked up in 2018. This defined Islamophobia as ‘rooted in racism and target[ing] expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness’. It isn’t hard to see where the working group is going.

Unsurprisingly, the consultation provided no invitation for those concerned about how a government-sponsored definition of Islamophobia might impact free speech. Groups such as Christian Concern, Don’t Divide Us, the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain and the Oxford Institute for British Islam – among many others – were all ignored by the working group.

You might think that conduct like this points to a distinct lack of objectivity on the part of the working group. And, dig a little deeper, and that is exactly what you will find. Of the five members whose names are publicly known, most have either endorsed the APPG definition or made statements closely aligned with its assumptions.

Grieve, for instance, was directly involved in the APPG’s 2018 report, authoring the foreword. He described it as ‘an important contribution to the debate as to how Islamophobia can best be addressed’. Another group member, Akeela Ahmed, who co-chairs the British Muslim Network, was cited in the same report calling for a definition ‘with legal power’ that could be ‘implemented by the government and the police’.

Most alarming is the presence of Baroness Shaista Gohir among the working group’s members. Not only has she publicly endorsed the APPG’s definition, she has authored a report linking ‘Islamophobia’ to the media reporting on the grooming-gangs scandal. The ‘disproportionate media coverage being given to British Pakistani offenders’, she argued in 2013, enabled ‘right-wing populist groups’ to exploit the issue to ‘fuel racism and Islamophobia’.

The attempt to recast criticism of Islamic beliefs and practices as a form of racial hostility raises the stakes considerably. Why? Because British law currently makes a clear distinction between the two. What is known as the ‘Waddington Amendment’ of the Public Order Act 1986 explicitly protects the right to criticise religion. It states that ‘nothing in this part’ should be interpreted as prohibiting ‘discussion, criticism or expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule, insult or abuse of particular religions or the beliefs or practices of their adherents’.

Adopting the APPG definition – and it’s hard to see the working group coming up with something radically different – would have a chilling effect on free speech. It would deter people from raising legitimate concerns about Islamist extremism, grooming gangs, even immigration, for fear they would be deemed racist. Its effect would be a modern-day blasphemy law, dressed up in the language of policing ‘hate speech’. Worse still, this is being developed behind closed doors, based on evidence gathered from a gerrymandered list of respondents, in a process overseen by an entirely unelected body.

Under Labour, the UK has enough problems as it is. The last thing we need is for blasphemy laws to be smuggled on to the statute books without any of us realising.

Freddie Attenborough is the digital communications director of the Free Speech Union.

Nadim Muslim: Why I am optimistic about our prospects in Bolton

June 30, 2025

Bolton is very much your typical northern town. It’s got high deprivation, with 45 per cent of the population living in an area that is among the 20 per cent most deprived nationally; poor health outcomes, with life expectancy two years below the UK average; and yearning for things to be better.

For decades, Bolton has been run by Labour. And whilst parliamentary elections have seen Conservatives win seats, the local authority has been run by Labour for over forty years (with a gap of two years post-Iraq invasion with the Lib Dems). That changed in 2019.

That year, people were fed up with politics. Brexit was not done and there was a sense that politicians didn’t care what the people thought. In fact Conservatives in those local elections didn’t do that well in Bolton. However, we managed to take control of the council.

How? By offering a vision that had such a wide appeal that other parties, mainly hyper-local independents, could see the benefits of working with us. That led to a four-year administration that delivered for Bolton. The only reason we were turfed out? National politics.

2023 was difficult for Conservatives up and down the country. Unfortunately, that decline is yet to be arrested. Yet, having just been elected leader of my group unopposed, I feel a sense of duty – and yes, optimism – about our future.

The reason for my optimism is clear. When you put national politics to one side, we have a brilliant track record locally. We delivered on £100 million in regeneration projects – with none having since started under Labour; we kept bin collections as they were – where Labour have now introduced charges as well as reducing frequency; and we invested £12 million in fixing local roads and pavements – with no extra cash from Labour since they took over.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not naïve enough to think national politics doesn’t still play its part. Counties have just had a bruising set of local elections in May, and whilst we lost many fantastic councillors, we also saw those with strong local messages, presence, and popularity, hold onto their seats. That was when we were at our lowest. Over the course of this next year, we can start to earn back the trust of the British people.

Kemi Badenoch had an unenviable task when she took over as leader. She could’ve offered snappy press releases on everything we’d do but not only were people not listening, they wouldn’t have trusted us anyway. Her thoughtful approach is already being vindicated. The government has u-turned on the Winter Fuel Allowance – and now also the much-needed rape-gang inquiry which is important to so many residents in our borough.

Her approach, over the next 12 months, will start to tease out more detail about our direction as a party and a future government. Over time, I know people will want to hear from us again. I hear it when I pop into a café in my ward for breakfast or at the pub quiz on a Monday night. But right now, they don’t think we’ve spent enough time sitting on the naughty step and thinking about what we’ve done.

As the national party starts to earn back that trust, we must be ready as local councillors and candidates with a strong message about our local record of success, the failure of Labour, Lib Dem, and Green councils, and a belief in purpose and victory. Altogether, this gives us a powerful campaigning message.

In Bolton, we’re defending seven seats. That’s essentially half of our group. But I couldn’t be prouder of the councillors we have that are standing. They’ve all got brilliant track records locally and are well known in their wards, not just as councillors, but people who genuinely care because they live there.

What we’ve seen from Reform locally in Bolton is a few pop-up gazebos on street corners. In the councils they now control, many are having to postpone meetings because of lack of attendance. They’re even having a plethora of by-elections as their councillors don’t even want to do it. The threat of Reform is serious but their commitment to serving local people is not.

Labour is particularly worried too. Whilst the media focused on our bad set of election results in May, Labour lost two-thirds of the seats they were defending. This can create opportunity for us locally.

We are the only credible opposition to Labour. Since taking over as group leader, I’ve been clear that we need a Bolton-first approach. That means no more debating motions on Gaza or Donald Trump but talking about the things that Bolton Council has control over. It means coming up with policies that can be realistically implemented. We’ve already forced a u-turn on a delay for planning applications for Homes of Multiple Occupation, and we’ve exposed the toxic culture of Labour, taking more paid positions for themselves and their supporters.

Winning in 2026 will not be easy but I am confident it’s possible. I honestly believe we can hold all the seats we’re defending and with Reform eating into Labour as much as us, there could even be opportunities for gains.

Bolton has always gone against the tide of results in local government. Last year, we stayed net no change, as others were losing seats by huge margins. There’s no substitute for knocking on doors and we’ve proven that. Next year, we’ll prove we can do it again.

Russia abandons nuclear deal with new NATO member

30 Jun, 2025

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has ordered that an information sharing agreement with Sweden on nuclear accidents and nuclear installations be abandoned, after Stockholm joined NATO last year.

The relevant document was signed by Mishustin on June 24 and published on the state portal for legal information on Friday.

The deal, signed by the USSR and Sweden in 1988, taking force of April that year, stemmed from the 1986 International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident, in which the agency’s members agreed to notify each other of any nuclear accidents on their territory that could affect other countries.

Scientists at the Swedish nuclear power station at Forsmark were among the first in the west to detect increasing radiation levels on April 28th 1986, two days after the explosion at the Chernobyl power plant in Ukraine.

Sweden joined NATO in March 2024, abandoning its long-standing policy of neutrality. Stockholm has provided almost $10 billion in military and other assistance to Kiev since February 2022, while also announcing a major rearmament program at home.

Russia constitutionally remains a successor state of the Soviet Union, having exclusively incurred the bloc’s debt upon its dissolution, and Moscow recognises international treaties signed by the USSR.

Russian ambassador to Stockholm Sergey Belyaev told RIA-Novosti in May that Stockholm’s stance “indicates that Sweden has completely lost its status of a neutral country and is turning into a springboard for the implementation of NATO’s militaristic ambitions.”

Russia launches ‘massive’ strike on Ukrainian defense industry – MOD

29 Jun, 2025

Russian forces carried out a large-scale overnight strike on Ukrainian industrial facilities involving long-range weapons and drones, the Defense Ministry in Moscow reported on Sunday. The Ukrainian authorities and media confirmed the attack, with some suggesting it was one of the largest since the escalation of the conflict in 2022.

In a statement reporting the operation, the Russian Defense Ministry said that its forces had “conducted a massive strike, involving high-precision long-range air-, sea- and land-based weapons, including the aeroballistic hypersonic Kinzhal missile system, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles, targeting Ukraine’s military-industrial and oil-processing facilities.”

The ministry didn’t provide any further details, but stated that the “strike goals were achieved. All designated targets were hit.”

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky confirmed the attack in a post on Telegram, claiming that it involved 477 Russian explosives-laden drones and 60 missiles of various types. He used the occasion to once again call on Kiev’s Western backers to provide it with more air defense systems.

Zelensky also revealed that Kiev lost a Western-supplied F-16 fighter jet while attempting to fend off the attack. The pilot perished in the incident.

Meanwhile, in a post on X, Ukrainian MP Mariana Bezuglaya accused the country’s military leadership of “murdering” fighter pilots by allegedly failing to develop effective anti-drone protocols.

According to the Ukrainian military’s tally, more than 20 incoming rockets and 40 UAVs made it through the country’s air defenses during the strike.

In a post on Facebook, Stepan Kulinyak, the head of the military administration in the city of Drohobych in Lviv Region in Western Ukraine, said that “as a result of the air attack, a fire broke out at an industrial infrastructure facility.” Officials in the region stated that the strikes did not cause any casualties but that critical infrastructure was hit.

In Poltava Region, an industrial site in the city of Kremenchuk reportedly came under attack.

While Ukrainian officials have not provided any details about the type of facilities hit and the extent of the damage inflicted, some local media outlets have pointed out that there are oil-processing plants in both Drohobych and Kremenchuk, and that they were likely the targets of the strikes.

Social media users have been posting videos purportedly depicting the Russian strikes and their aftermath in several Ukrainian regions.

Art in Madinah through the eyes of a local artist

LAMA ALHAMAWI

June 29, 2025

Riyadh: Madinah’s art scene is expanding, featuring a rich blend of traditional and contemporary influences rooted in the Kingdom’s Islamic heritage, cultural identity and historical lineage.

“The art scene in Madinah is constantly evolving, leading artists in the city to keep pace with this development and enter the artistic landscape,” artist and Madinah native Meshal Al-Hujaili told Arab News.

Al-Hujaili described how the art scene in his home town influences his work: “Madinah, with its spiritual nature and simplicity, always leads me to pursue simplicity in my work, despite its artistic depth.”

Born and raised in Madinah, Al-Hujaili contributes to the growth of the local art scene through his solo art exhibitions and collaborations with the Madinah Art Center.

The center “has been a turning point for the art scene in Madinah,” he said.

“Due to its ongoing art sessions, exhibitions and meetings, it has increased my exposure to artists who preceded me in the field,” Al-Hujaili said.

“The center provides a stimulating environment for dialogue and exchange of experiences among artists, which has opened new horizons for me in my expression and in my understanding of the role of art in society,” he said.

Al-Hujaili’s artwork, currently on display in the main gallery of the Madinah Art Center, is a result of the Madinah International Symposium 2023.

“The painting, titled ‘Flow,’ reflects my experience at the symposium, my presence among more than 200 artists from around the world, and the artistic flow that prevailed at the center,” he said.

Al-Hujaili’s latest exhibition, titled “Path,” in collaboration with curator Nouf Al-Balawi explored “reflections, each representing a pivotal stage in the artist’s life as he searches for self.”

The art exhibition shed light on the Madinah native’s life, “documenting the events around him, about the various paths of life, in an individual experience that begins with the embryo and continues through to the impact he creates,” Al-Hujaili said.

When asked where he draws his inspiration from, the artist said his natural curiosity and love for asking questions.

Al-Hujaili’s latest exhibition is inspired by five themes, the first being “From Embryo to Embryo,” a series of four works that explore the circle of life, starting from the moment the fetus is formed in the womb and continuing through parenthood, “where the first fetus never ends, but rather transforms and begins anew as the father of a fetus,” as Al-Hujaili described it.

The second theme is titled “The Child I Was Not.”

“After highlighting the fetal stage, the exhibition moves to the next stage: childhood,” he said.

This is a single work in which the artist tries to reflect on children’s perspectives on art, because “art was not part of their experience as a child,” he said.

One part of the exhibition, titled “Morning Exercises,” shifts from childhood to decision-making and commitment. It features 30 artworks documenting the artist’s dedication to a daily morning art practice, lasting up to five hours of creating new pieces.

Another section titled “What to Do?” looks at the artist questioning the definition of the artwork and discovering where the value in the artwork lies.

In the concluding “Effort and Impact” section, two works represent the artist’s journey in producing art, his commitment to daily work, and his constant questioning and research.

Closing the interview, the artist emphasized how the Madinah Art Center supports his work and the work of other artists across the Kingdom: “The gallery encourages artists to explore new experiences and view the work of other artists,” he said.

“The center also offers numerous training courses and dialogue sessions that help artists become part of the artistic movement taking place in Madinah across various artistic fields,” he said.

When asked what he hopes to accomplish in the Madinah art scene, he said: “I have always dreamed of making a real impact on how people view art and representing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

Al-Hujaili said he hopes his work will be immortalized in history.

Najdi doors reflect Kingdom’s craft legacy

June 29, 2025

Riyadh: The year 2025 has been designated the “Year of Handicrafts” in the Kingdom to reinforce traditional arts and crafts as authentic cultural heritage.

The initiative aims to promote the practice, preservation, documentation and integration of handicrafts into modern life, celebrating a cultural legacy central to national identity, a Saudi Press Agency report said.

It seeks to support artisans, enhance their skills and prevent traditional crafts from disappearing. It emphasizes manual crafts made using simple tools, without modern technology.

Prominent crafts include Sadu weaving, mud building, wood carving, pottery, hand embroidery, and palm frond products such as baskets and mats.

Engraving on doors with Najdi motifs is another traditional art for which the Najd region is renowned, the SPA reported.

Artisan Ali Al-Jasser, known for Najdi door engraving, shared his journey from basic wooden installations to intricate three-dimensional pieces blending tradition with contemporary art.

He noted regional variations — at Najdi in the center, Al-Qatt Al-Asiri in the south, Rawashin in the west, Bab Al-Bahr in the east, and Sadu in the north.

Another artisan, Nouf Al-Suwailim, highlighted that Najdi door engravings were key elements of traditional Najdi architecture, reflecting its cultural and urban identity.

She described the doors’ elegant designs, featuring geometric and floral patterns enhanced by decorative iron nails.

Hamas Calls on Palestinian People to Rally at Al-Aqsa Mosque

30 Jun 2025

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) called on the Palestinian people in Al-Quds, the West Bank, and the occupied territories to rally at the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, defend it, and rebuild it, and to confront the terrorist Zionist enemy government's attempt to Judaize it.

In a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), Hamas considered the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by dozens of Zionist settlers under the protection of the Zionist enemy police, and their performance of Talmudic rituals there after the mosque was emptied of worshippers, an escalation in Zionist violations of the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Iran Ready To Open New Chapter In Relations With Neighbors

Jun 30, 2025

Pezeshkian stated on Sunday afternoon during a cabinet meeting, “I consider it my duty to express my deep gratitude to the Leader for his wise leadership during the 12-day imposed war and his supreme command over this national resistance. Without his guidance and support, overcoming this crisis and reaching a safe and stable shore would not have been possible.”

The President also sincerely thanked religious authorities, prominent scholars, leading academic figures, writers, intellectuals, artists, and media activists for their intellectual backing and support for the government and armed forces.

Pezeshkian added that the role of Iranians abroad in shaping national unity, cohesion, and solidarity must not be overlooked, noting that their deep affection and connection to the nation were clearly demonstrated. He expressed appreciation and respect for these compatriots.

The president also reaffirmed that the neighborhood policy and development of regional relations are a core strategy of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He stated that given the necessity of solidarity among Islamic countries and with the aim of broadening comprehensive cooperation, the Islamic Republic of Iran is fully prepared to engage in complete collaboration with the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council, thus beginning a new chapter in its relations with neighbors.

Turkiye spy chief talks Gaza truce with senior Hamas leader

June 29, 2025

ISTANBUL: Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin met senior Hamas leaders on Sunday for talks on Gaza’s humanitarian tragedy and efforts to reach a ceasefire, state news agency Anadolu reported.

Kalin held talks with Mohammad Darwish, head of the political council of Hamas that rules Gaza, and his delegation at an undisclosed location, Anadolu said, citing security sources.

They discussed the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza and Turkiye’s efforts to end the war and “ensure the immediate passage of aid” to the territory.

They also spoke of “the need to reach a consensus among Palestinian groups during this critical period... (and) the steps to be taken to achieve a permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” the sources said.

The meeting came after US President Donald Trump voiced optimism about a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, saying Friday it could happen “within the next week.”

Mediators have engaged in months of negotiations aimed at ending 20 months of war in Gaza, where Israel stopped all food entering over two months ago, leading to warnings of famine.

It has since allowed a resumption of food deliveries through the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation involving US security contractors, with Israeli troops at the periphery.

Witnesses and Gaza officials have reported multiple instances of Palestinians being killed while trying to get aid.

Any threat to Leader by anyone amounts to Enemy of God

Jun 29, 2025

Any attack on Shia Marja and Leaders of the Islamic nation is considered as an attack on the pillar of Islam and also the lives of all Muslims, and will receive a harsh and crushing response from freedom-seeking people of the world and the pious nation of the Islamic Iran.

Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani, in a message on Sunday, said that criminal president of the United States, who has nothing but murdering, plundering, and assassination in his black record and has consistently supported the crimes of the brutal Zionist regime, has dared to make a foolish comment regarding the esteemed position of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

“We declare that any attack on the Shia Marja and Leader of the Islamic Ummah is considered an attack on the pillar of Islam and also lives of all Muslims, and will receive a harsh and crushing response from the faithful nation of the Islamic Iran and all freedom seekers of the world,” the ayatollah

Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani went on to say that the terrorist US government and its oppressive rulers should know that not only will these threats not undermine the will of the people of the country, but also will further strengthen the unity and amity of the Islamic Ummah.

Earlier on Sunday, Grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi issued a fatwa in which he declared anyone who threatens the Leader, and Shia Marja to be the Enemy of God, who has to be fought against according to Islamic teachings.

Egyptian foreign minister urges recognition of Palestine in talks with EU envoy to Middle East

June 29, 2025

LONDON: Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Sunday emphasized the urgent need to recognize Palestinian statehood on the territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He made his comment during a meeting in Cairo with Christophe Bigot, the EU’s special representative for the Middle East peace process. Abdelatty said that the establishment of a Palestinian state is the only way to achieve lasting peace, security and stability in the region, the Wafa news agency reported.

He hoped for the broader international recognition of the Palestinian state and for the organization of an international conference aimed at resolving the Palestinian issue through peaceful means.

Abdelatty’s remarks followed those of French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who said on Sunday during an interview with the French LCI news channel that France is “determined to recognize the State of Palestine,” emphasizing the urgent need for international action in light of the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza.

A French-Saudi conference to drum up international support for the recognition of the state of Palestine was due to start in mid-June, but the organizers postponed it because of the Iranian-Israeli conflict and elevated tensions in the region.

“We are committed to recognizing the state of Palestine, and this will happen as part of a joint initiative that encourages all parties to create the necessary conditions for the establishment of that state,” Barrot said.

He called the killing of hundreds of Palestinian aid seekers by Israeli forces in recent weeks in Gaza “a disgrace and an affront to human dignity.”

Syria denies reports of assassination attempt on President Al-Sharaa

June 29, 2025

DAMASCUS: Syria’s Ministry of Information on Sunday denied reports that an attempt was made on the life of interim President Ahmed Al-Sharaa during a recent visit to the southern city of Daraa, Syrian Arab News Agency reported.

A ministry source, quoted by state news agency SANA on Sunday, dismissed the claims as false, saying: “What was circulated by several media outlets about the Syrian Arab Army and Turkish intelligence foiling an assassination attempt on President Ahmad Al-Sharaa during his visit to Daraa is untrue.”

SANA did not provide further details about the reported incident or its origins.

Al-Sharaa has led the Syrian Arab Republic’s transitional administration since January, following the collapse of the Bashar Assad regime. Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly a quarter of a century, fled to Russia in December.

Netanyahu sees ‘opportunities’ to free Gaza hostages

June 29, 2025

JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that his country’s “victory” over Iran in their 12-day war had created “opportunities,” including for freeing hostages held in Gaza.

“Many opportunities have opened up now following this victory. First of all, to rescue the hostages,” Netanyahu said in an address to officers of the security services.

“Of course, we will also have to solve the Gaza issue, to defeat Hamas, but I estimate that we will achieve both goals,” he added, referring to his country’s campaign to crush the Palestinian militant group.

In a statement late Sunday, the main group representing hostages’ families welcomed “the fact that after 20 months, the return of the hostages has finally been designated as the top priority by the prime minister.”

“This is a very important statement that must translate into a single comprehensive deal to bring back all 50 hostages and end the fighting in Gaza,” the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said.

Palestinian militants seized 251 hostages during Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Of these, 49 are still believed to be held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead. Hamas also holds the body of an Israeli soldier killed there in 2014.

The forum called for the hostages’ “release, not rescue.”

“The only way to free them all is through a comprehensive deal and an end to the fighting, without rescue operations that endanger both the hostages and (Israeli) soldiers.”

Israeli court postpones Netanyahu appearance in graft trial

June 29, 2025

JERUSALEM: An Israeli court on Sunday postponed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s testimony in his corruption trial after he requested a delay, as US President Donald Trump called for the case to be thrown out.

“Following the explanations given... we partially accept the request and cancel at this stage Mr.Netanyahu’s hearings scheduled” for this week, the Jerusalem district court said in its ruling, published online by Netanyahu’s Likud party.

Netanyahu’s lawyers had asked the court to excuse him from testifying over the next two weeks so he could focus on security issues following a ceasefire with Iran and amid ongoing fighting in Gaza where Israeli hostages are held.

They had submitted Netanyahu’s schedule to the court to demonstrate “the national need for the prime minister to devote all his time and energy to the political, national and security issues at hand.”

The court initially rejected the lawyers’ request but said in its ruling on Sunday that it had changed its judgment after hearing arguments from the prime minister, the head of military intelligence and the chief of the Mossad spy agency.

Trump on Saturday said in a post on his Truth Social platform that the United States was “not going to stand” for the continued prosecution, prompting Netanyahu to thank him in a message on X.

Earlier in the week, the US president had described the case against the Israeli premier as a “witch hunt,” saying the trial “should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero.”

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid reacted by saying that Trump “should not interfere in a judicial trial in an independent country.”

Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing in the corruption affair and his supporters have described the long-running trial as politically motivated.

In one of the cases, he and his wife, Sara, are accused of accepting more than $260,000 worth of luxury goods such as cigars, jewelry and champagne from billionaires in exchange for political favors.

In two others, Netanyahu is accused of attempting to negotiate more favorable coverage from two Israeli media outlets.

The prime minister has requested multiple postponements to the trial since it began in May 2020.

During his current term, which started in late 2022, Netanyahu’s government has proposed far-reaching judicial reforms that critics say were designed to weaken the courts and prompted massive protests that were only curtailed by the onset of the Gaza war.

In an interview with Israel’s Channel 12 that aired on Saturday, former prime minister Naftali Bennett accused Netanyahu of deepening divisions in Israeli society, and said that he “must go.”

Netanyahu “has been in power for 20 years... that’s too much, it’s not healthy,” Bennett said.

The former right-wing premier managed to form a coalition in 2021 that ousted Netanyahu from the premiership after 12 consecutive years, but it collapsed before the end of the following year.

Bennett is rumored to be planning a comeback, with public opinion polls suggesting he may have enough support to oust Netanyahu again. He declined to comment on that prospect in Saturday’s interview.

Former Iranian Diplomat: Afghan Migrants not linked to ‘Enemy Spies’

By Fidel Rahmati

June 30, 2025

A former Iranian diplomat emphasized that Afghan migrants are not associated with “enemy spies,” calling for a more humane approach towards them.

Rasoul Mousavi, the former director-general of South Asia affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has recently voiced strong concerns regarding the treatment of Afghan migrants in Iran. In a published article, Mousavi emphasized that Afghan migrants “are not aligned with enemy spies” and urged the Iranian government to adopt a more humane, patient, and dignity-based approach in managing the Afghan migrant issue.

His comments come amid rising tensions regarding the treatment of Afghan migrants in Iran, particularly following the recent conflict between Iran and Israel. During the 12-day war, several Afghan migrants were detained on accusations of collaborating with Israel. Iranian media broadcast a video allegedly showing two Afghan nationals “confessing” to such collaboration, though the circumstances under which the video was recorded remain unclear.

Following a ceasefire agreement with Israel, Iran has notably escalated its deportation of Afghan migrants. Mousavi stressed the importance of distinguishing between issues related to Afghan migrants and those concerning alleged espionage activities. He argued that the Iranian authorities should address espionage suspects separately from the broader migrant population to ensure fairness and compassion in the process.

Drawing from his extensive experience working on Afghanistan-related matters, Mousavi pointed out that Afghans’ resentment toward Israeli agents and enemies of Iran is as profound as Iranians’ own, if not more. This, he suggests, underscores the need for a balanced approach, recognizing the complexities of the migrant issue without conflating it with political conflicts.

Mousavi’s remarks reflect growing concerns within Iran regarding the treatment of its Afghan migrant population, many of whom have been residing in the country due to the ongoing instability in Afghanistan. The surge in deportations and arrests can be viewed as part of a broader effort by the Iranian government to manage its domestic policies while navigating its geopolitical relations.

The handling of Afghan migrants has long been a sensitive issue in Iran. While many Afghans have integrated into Iranian society, the complex political dynamics between Iran, Israel, and Afghanistan continue to complicate their status. Mousavi’s call for a more nuanced approach to Afghan migrants is likely to intensify ongoing debates about how best to manage the challenges posed by this group, especially as Iran faces mounting social, economic, and political pressures.

India organizes Five-Day ‘Jaipur Foot’ Camp in Kabul to aid Afghan Amputees

By Fidel Rahmati-

June 30, 2025

India organized a five-day ‘Jaipur Foot’ camp in Kabul, providing free prosthetic limbs to Afghan amputees as part of ongoing humanitarian support.

As part of its ongoing humanitarian support to Afghanistan, India recently hosted a five-day ‘Jaipur Foot’ prosthetic limb camp in the capital city of Kabul. The initiative was aimed at helping Afghan citizens with disabilities regain mobility and independence.

Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, stated on June 29 in a post on X, “The camp was organized by an Indian charitable organization in collaboration with the Indian Embassy in Kabul. It provided artificial limbs, calipers, and other mobility aids to dozens of physically challenged individuals in need of rehabilitation support.”

He further stated that, “As part of India’s ongoing humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan, a five-day Jaipur Foot camp was organised in Kabul by BMVSS, Jaipur. The camp saw an enthusiastic response, with around 75 prosthetic limbs successfully fitted.”

Indian officials noted that this effort aligns with India’s long-standing commitment to the welfare of the Afghanistan people, particularly during times of humanitarian crisis. The program also underscores India’s focus on people-centric development in conflict-affected regions.

Afghanistan has been grappling with a deteriorating humanitarian situation since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. Millions face food insecurity, lack of medical services, and widespread unemployment.

India has been one of the key regional donors to Afghanistan, delivering humanitarian assistance through food aid, medical supplies, scholarships, and capacity-building programs. The Jaipur Foot camp is part of this broader effort to provide support without political conditions, focusing on basic human needs.

Khelafat Majlish to contest in all 300 seats

Jun 30, 2025

Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish yesterday announced that it was preparing to nominate candidates in all 300 constituencies for the upcoming national election, prioritising Islamic values and national interests.

"However, if broader alliances or electoral understandings can ensure greater protection of Islam and the country's interests, the party is ready to take that route as well," Mawlana Muhammad Mamunul Haque, ameer of Khelafat Majlish, told a press briefing at the auditorium of Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh.

Outlining the party's position on the proportional representation (PR) system in parliament, he said, "We want a partial PR system. The current system does not truly reflect the majority's opinion. Therefore, to ensure fair and inclusive representation, a partial PR system should be introduced in the lower house and a full PR system in the upper house."

Proportional representation is an electoral system in which the distribution of seats corresponds with the proportion of the total votes cast for each party.

Calling upon the government, Mamunul said, "We urge the interim government to clarify unresolved issues in the electoral framework to the nation without delay. Although there is consensus on a bicameral parliament, a decision is still needed on how the upper and lower chambers will be formed."

Responding to a question, he said that Khelafat Majlish has traditionally been a proponent of Islamic unity. Shortly after its formation, the party played a role in forming a broader Islamic alliance.

"We still uphold that tradition today."

Regarding local government polls, he stated that they too should be held based on national political consensus.

Calling for maintaining the anti-fascist unity, he said, "The historic unity forged on the streets must not be undermined. The current trend of political coordination -- where no one is toppling or suppressing the other -- must continue. If anyone reverts to the Awami League-style politics of suppression and elimination, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish will call for national unity and play an active role."

He further said, "Bangladesh must be governed based on the will of its own people. Our efforts will continue to ensure that no foreign agenda is reimposed.

"Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish believes that a strong and constructive opposition is essential for the country. The politics of eradicating opposition parties cannot continue in Bangladesh."

Before the press briefing, an orientation and introduction programme for potential candidates was held at the same venue from 10:00am.

Over 300 aspiring candidates from across the country, who are interested in contesting with the rickshaw symbol, attended the event.

Central leaders provided them with necessary guidance on elections, politics, and party ideology.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Deputy Administrative Chief of the Prime Minister’s Office, Mawlawi Abdul Salam Hanafi, along with several cabinet members.

According to officials, the township is designed to accommodate Afghan returnees from neighboring countries, offering essential services including housing, healthcare, education, and other basic infrastructure.

CA press wing debunks video of elderly Hindu man humiliation

30 Jun 2025

DHAKA, June 30, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Adviser's Press Wing has binned a recent video claiming that an elderly Hindu man was publicly humiliated in Bangladesh by radical Islamists, saying it false and misleading.

"A video recently went viral on social media platforms, falsely claiming that an elderly Hindu man in Bangladesh was publicly humiliated by being forced to wear a garland of shoes by radical Islamists," the press wing said in a statement posted on its verified Facebook page - CA Press Wing Facts - on Sunday night.

According to the captions circulating with the video, the man was a Hindu schoolteacher who had served in education for 40 years and was allegedly assaulted by Islamist extremists.

The claim has been widely shared by numerous X accounts, framing the incident as a case of religious persecution against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh, the statement said.

However, investigation reveals that the claims are entirely inaccurate, the press wing said.

Reverse image searches and keyword-based verification led to credible reports in mainstream Bangladeshi media outlets such as Kaler Kantho, Dhaka Times, and bdnews24.com, which provide clear context of the incident, it said.

The man shown in the video is not a Hindu teacher with decades of service. He is Ahmad Ali, a Muslim and a community medical officer from Tekati village in Baliakandi upazila, Rajbari district, the press wing claimed.

A report published on June 15 by Kaler Kantho stated that Ahmad Ali was physically assaulted and paraded through a local market with a garland of shoes after being accused of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Rajbari's Baliakandi area.

Dhaka Times reported that the alleged remarks were made at a tea shop in Beruli Bazar, where a mob reacted violently in response.

According to bdnews24.com, Ahmad Ali had served as a community medical officer at the Nawabpur Union Sub-Health Complex prior to retirement.

The combined information from these reliable sources confirms that the man was not a Hindu, not a teacher, and that the incident was not a targeted attack against a religious minority, but rather stemmed from allegations of blasphemy.

"While the video is genuine, the narrative surrounding it is entirely false and misleading. This was not an act of religious persecution against the Hindu community, but a localised incident driven by accusations of religious defamation - later distorted online to falsely portray communal violence," the statement read.

Near consensus on appointment committee formation: Jamaat's Taher

Jun 29, 2025

A consensus involving two-thirds of political parties has already been reached on forming a committee to oversee appointments to constitutional and statutory bodies, Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Nayeb-e-Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, said today.

He, however, said a few issues are still under discussion, which he believed could be resolved through minor reforms.

Taher made the remarks while talking to reporters during the midday break of ongoing talks between political parties and the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy today.

Addressing concerns raised by the BNP regarding this committee, he said, "This committee will in no way interfere with the powers of the prime minister. Instead, it will be a balanced body comprising the prime minister, the leader of the opposition, the speaker, a representative from the judiciary, and a nominee of the president. Thus, both the government and the opposition will have representation."

Taher added that instead of including the chief justice directly, a Supreme Court judge nominated by the CJ has been proposed.

"We believe such a structure is essential for the country so that competent, neutral, and qualified individuals are appointed in key positions across the administration, the secretariat, and the parliament. The so-called 'ghosts' of the Awami League should no longer dominate these spaces," he said.

He further clarified that the BNP is not fundamentally opposed to the formation of such a committee, but they are still engaged in discussions over its structure.

"Two-thirds of the parties have already agreed to the proposal that they [the commission] have placed," he added.

Taher said, "We do not want an election without reforms. Without reforms, we risk returning to a state of political intimidation. People will lose faith in such an election."

Regarding the issue of a bicameral parliament, he said, "We are, in principle, supportive of a bicameral parliamentary system. However, the upper house must reflect the people's vote – not be based solely on MPs' votes."

Over 8,000 Afghan migrants deported daily from Iran

By Fidel Rahmati

June 30, 2025

Over 8,000 Afghan migrants are being deported daily from Iran through the Dogharoun border, with more than 95,000 deported in a week.

Hussein Jamshidi, the governor of Taybad, has reported a significant increase in the deportation of undocumented Afghan migrants from Iran. According to the governor, approximately 8,000 Afghan migrants are being returned daily through the Dogharoon border, highlighting a sharp rise in deportations since the recent conflict with Israel.

Jamshidi revealed that over the course of just one week, more than 95,000 undocumented Afghan migrants were identified and deported from Iran. This surge in deportations follows growing concerns over border security and the impact of the Israel-Iran conflict on the country’s migrant population.

Despite the increased deportations, Jamshidi emphasized that over 90% of Afghan migrants left voluntarily, suggesting that most chose to return home rather than face further legal challenges in Iran. He also explained that migrants were undergoing necessary legal procedures before being sent back to Afghanistan, ensuring the process was lawful.

In addition, Jamshidi shared that around 250 vehicles are used daily to transport Afghan migrants to the Dogharoon border. This operation continues to intensify as Iranian authorities focus on tightening control over the border and addressing the growing numbers of undocumented migrants in the country.

The heightened deportation efforts have targeted migrants from 11 provinces, with a particular focus on those living in precarious conditions without proper documentation. The move is part of Iran’s broader policy aimed at improving border security and regulating the presence of undocumented migrants in the country.

The escalation of deportations comes in the wake of increased geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel. Following the 12-day conflict, the Iranian government has stepped up domestic security measures, which include cracking down on undocumented migrant populations. Afghan migrants, who have been residing in Iran for many years due to the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan, have become a primary focus of this policy.

The intensification of deportations raises humanitarian concerns. Many of the Afghan migrants deported from Iran face considerable hardships upon their return, as Afghanistan continues to struggle with economic and social instability. The deportations risk worsening the already dire situation for these migrants, many of whom have been living in Iran for years to escape the conflict in their homeland.

The Iranian government’s approach to managing the presence of undocumented migrants, especially in the context of the Israel-Iran conflict, has sparked concern among human rights organizations and international observers. Calls for more humane treatment of migrants have been growing, with a particular emphasis on the need for protection for vulnerable populations who may be caught in political and geopolitical struggles.

This crackdown on Afghan migrants is likely to have broader implications for the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, which is already under significant strain. As thousands of Afghans are being returned to an already fragile system, the international community is urging for more supportive and coordinated responses to ensure the safety and well-being of returnees.

Melaka increases food aid for asnaf, Muslim converts to RM300 monthly

Bernama

2025-06-30

MELAKA: The Melaka government has announced an increase in monthly food assistance for asnaf (those eligible for zakat) and Muslim converts, raising the amount from RM250 to RM300 starting tomorrow.

The decision aims to address the rising cost of essential goods and ensure better support for recipients.

State Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman clarified that hardcore poor recipients under the Melaka Islamic Religious Council (MAIM) will continue receiving RM400 per month.

The food aid scheme, known as ‘daruriyah,‘ allows beneficiaries to collect essential items from 74 designated MAIM suppliers using their identity cards.

As of June 24, 7,810 individuals are enrolled in the programme, including 112 from the hardcore poor category and 7,698 from the poor group.

Rahmad noted that the aid rate had not been revised in years, prompting the adjustment.

Additional assistance schemes have also been enhanced.

One-time primary school fee aid for asnaf children has increased from RM70 to RM100, while cash assistance for Muslim converts has risen from RM200 to RM300.

New converts will now automatically receive the higher amount.

On zakat distribution, Rahmad shared that Melaka collected RM141.37 million last year, with RM151.22 million distributed to asnaf.

This year’s zakat allocation is projected at RM33.68 million, a 15 per cent increase from RM29.3 million in 2023.

“MAIM remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of the asnaf community and improving the zakat distribution system,“ he said, urging contributors to continue supporting MAIM’s efforts.

Klang rejects columbarium plan near mosque after resident protests

Bernama

2025-06-29

KLANG: The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) has officially rejected a developer’s proposal to construct a four-storey columbarium complex adjacent to Kampung Raja Uda Mosque in Port Klang.

Mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain confirmed the unanimous decision was made during a One Stop Centre committee meeting last Thursday, citing technical concerns and strong opposition from local residents.

“The developer retains the right to appeal to the State Town and Country Planning Department within 30 days.

“Further appeals may be pursued through the Appeals Board or courts if necessary,“ stated Abd Hamid after launching the Sentosa constituency Clean & Green programme.

He emphasized that MBDK followed due process in evaluating the application for the 1-hectare privately owned land.

The proposal had drawn significant backlash since early June, with over 300 online objections filed by Kampung Raja Uda’s 5,000 residents.

Port Klang assemblyman Azmizam Zaman Huri represented the community during a June 19 public hearing chaired by MBDK Deputy Mayor Mohd Zary Affendi Mohd Arif, where villagers and developers presented their arguments.

Malaysia, Singapore celebrate delivery of first RTS Link train ahead of 2026 opening

30 Jun 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — The first driverless trains for the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link was unveiled today and will begin testing at a new S$800 million (RM2.6 billion) facility in Tuas starting July.

The new four-car train, measuring 76.5 metres in length, was introduced today at the Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC) in the presence of top transport officials from both countries, The Straits Times reported

Singapore’s Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow, Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke, and Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi attended the commemorative event.

Datuk Khairil Anwar Ahmad, chairman of RTS Operations (RTSO), said the rail link represents not just an engineering feat but a deepening of Malaysia-Singapore ties.

RTSO, a joint venture between Singapore’s SMRT and Malaysia’s Prasarana, is overseeing the construction and eventual operation of the rail system.

As of today, the overall installation of systems for the RTS Link is 56 per cent complete, including the laying of tracks and the installation of the power system that will run the trains.

Track installation is expected to be finished by the end of July, according to RTSO.

All eight RTS Link trains are being built by China’s CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive and each train can carry an optimal load of 607 passengers, or a maximum of 1,087.

Each train car is equipped with 32 seats, including four foldable ones to accommodate wheelchairs, prams, or luggage.

The trains are fitted with a hearing induction loop system that transmits public announcements directly to hearing aids, a first for both countries’ rail systems.

Passengers can activate an emergency call button or manually open the doors using red hatches connected to the control centre, which only function when the train is stationary.

Only doors facing the emergency walkway along the RTS Link’s elevated and tunnelled track can be opened during an emergency.

Other safety features include smoke and fire detectors, as well as windows that can be opened to let in fresh air.

Testing at SRTC will focus on ensuring that the trains integrate smoothly with systems like signalling and platform screen doors, and is expected to conclude in late 2025.

After Tuas testing, the train will undergo service simulation trials between Woodlands North in Singapore and Bukit Chagar in Johor until the third quarter of 2026.

Four more trains are now being assembled at CRRC’s facility in Batu Gajah, Perak, while the remaining three will follow later.

Once ready, the seven remaining trains will be sent directly to Johor Baru’s Wadi Hana depot for further testing before the RTS Link opens.

When operational, the trains will travel at speeds of up to 80kph and transport up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction over the 4km route.

Democracy without voters: the origin of Nigeria’s insecurity crisis

June 29, 2025

On 26 January 2009, the Mamman Bello Ali died. He was the governor of Yobe State in north-east Nigeria. At around the same time, an anti-terrorism campaign by the government of Nigeria in Yobe State and its neighbour, Borno State, was about to make a murderous transition into a full-blown insurgency. As Governor Mamman Ali made his earthly transition in a Florida hospital, his deputy, Ibrahim Gaidam assumed office on the same day as the new governor of Yobe State. Today, as Minister of Police Affairs in the federal government, Governor Gaidam, whose life in politics has included a stint as a member of the Senate, has high responsibility for policing the country. He is so ineffectual in this role that few Nigerians notice his existence.

Around 9 November 2014, a suicide-bomber dressed as a student detonated himself in the middle of school assembly at the Government Boys Secondary School in Potiskum, Yobe State. The police confirmed that the attack “left 47 people dead, including the suicide bomber. Another 79 were wounded. Dozens of students were injured so severely medics were unable to save them.” It was a tragedy on an unspeakable scale. The blame for the attack fell on Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad, (the Islamist insurgency better known as Boko Haram). Ibrahim Gaidam was still Governor.

The following day, President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign was in full swing as he sought the support of the country for his re-election in 2015 under the banner of the then ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). The All Progressives Congress (APC), then newly formed as an opposition Alliance was quick to take political advantage. It described Jonathan’s campaign launch as “insensitive and callous” and accused him and the PDP of “dancing on the graves of the pupils as well as of all the victims of Boko Haram insurgency.” The APC took the opportunity to recall another mass-casualty bombing incident in Nyanya on the outskirts of Abuja in April 2014 and said that following that incident, “President Jonathan went dancing ‘Azonto’ in Kano less than 48 hours later.”

In the period from 2009 to 2014, when Islamist violence of Boko Haram in north-east Nigeria transitioned into a full-blown insurgency, the PDP was in power. Educational infrastructure bore a major brunt of the attacks by the group which built a brand in murderous violence by campaigning against Western education. The worst-affected states – Borno and Yobe – happened to be outside the orbit of the ruling party. In the half-decade to 2014, the violence accounted for at least 611 teachers reportedly killed and another 19,000 forced to flee. In 2014 alone, the insurgency killed over 6,644 persons in the affected states.

In May 2014, the United Nations Security Council listed Boko Haram as a terrorist organisation. Three years earlier, the Gaji Galtimari Presidential Committee on the Security Challenges in the North-East Zone of Nigeria had reported that the group “started as an innocuous non-violent group” around 2003.

This rise in Boko Haram’s campaign of mass-casualty violence was both new and shocking. The response of the then ruling government appeared slow, ponderous, and mal-adapted. It was also political season. The escalation in the attacks and killings from the Islamist insurgency in north-east Nigeria in 2014 coincided with the run-up to Nigeria’s 2015 general elections.

For the PDP in power at the time, it was a struggle to manage the optics of campaigning in the midst of growing carnage. The APC, then a new opposition formation, relished in its role, making political capital out of the situation. Its forceful critique of the PDP’s management of the Boko Haram insecurity or lack of it was central in ensuring the defeat of the ruling party in the 2015 election.

The popular narrative of Muhammadu Buhari, the APC candidate for the presidency in 2015, as a no-nonsense soldier did more than any other thing in reassuring Nigerians that the party would bring competence to the handling of the crisis of insecurity in the country.

Instead, since then, insecurity in Nigeria has metastasised under the successive presidencies of President Muhammadu Buhari and his successor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The violence, which was mostly confined in the states of the north-east one decade ago, has become hydra-headed under various nomenclatures all over the country.

In its latest Conflict Barometer (2024) report, the Heidelberg Institute for International Conflict Research identified at least 10 sites of active, conflict-related killings in Nigeria, at least five of which fall into the highest classifications of seriousness.

In the north-east, Boko Haram has mutated into a confederacy of mass-murder under different appellations, each seeking supremacy in an Olympiad of mass-casualty violence.

In North-Central Nigeria, the party chose to mis-characterise as “farmer-herder” clashes, a methodical campaign of land-grabbing by people described by the government mostly as “foreigners.”

Under the watch of the APC government, in 2021, the north-west overtook the northeast in mass-casualty atrocities. Unable to manage the situation in the region, the government took to labeling the perpetrators of the atrocities in the north-west as “bandits.”

Unlike the north-east where improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and suicide-bombers were major features of the insurgency, the major items in the violence in the north-west are motor-bikes and Kalashnikovs. Yet, the government cannot account for how these bikes and guns get into the hands of those who use them to habitually liquidate Nigerians on an industrial scale.

Kaduna was central in this shift. Installed in power in 2015 in the APC Tsunami as the new APC Governor of strategically significant Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, was voluble in promoting mass-murder as profitable, incredibly proclaiming on national television how he paid the killers of Nigerians in order to encourage them to stop killing. The casual malevolence of his proferred justification was beyond shocking: “We got a group of people that were going round trying to trace some of these people in Cameroon, Niger and so on to tell them that there is a new governor who is Fulani like them and has no problem paying compensations for lives lost and he is begging them to stop the killing.”

Even worse, the mis-management of the insecurity under the government of the APC has smacked of a level of indifference, cynicism, and lack of empathy that the PDP would never have dreamed of. In Benue State last week, all of this was on show. Forced by public opinion finally to re-route himself to visit victims of mass liquidation in Benue State, in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu first had children line up in the rain to be splashed with mud by his majestic convoy before the obligatory serenading from uniformed women living in internal displacement from the violence. It was right out of the manual of political narcissism jointly authored by Louis VIX and Marie Antoniette.

Sudan refugees face deepening hunger as funds dry up: UN

June 30, 2025

KHARTOUM: Millions of people displaced by the war in Sudan are at risk of falling deeper into crisis as funding for food aid dwindles, the UN’s World Food Programme warned Monday.

Since April 2023, war between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has created the world’s largest displacement crisis, with more than 10 million people displaced inside the country.

Another four million have fled across borders, mainly to Chad, Egypt and South Sudan.

“This is a full-blown regional crisis that’s playing out in countries that already have extreme levels of food insecurity and high levels of conflict,” said Shaun Hughes, WFP’s emergency coordinator for the Sudan regional crisis.

The United Nations says its humanitarian response plan for Sudan — also the world’s largest hunger crisis — is only 14.4 percent funded.

A UN conference in Spain this week aims to rally international donors, following deep funding shortfalls that have affected relief operations globally.

The WFP warned support to Sudanese refugees in Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya and the Central African Republic “may grind to a halt in the coming months as resources run dry.”

In Egypt, which hosts around 1.5 million people who fled Sudan, food aid for 85,000 refugees — 36 percent of those previously supported — had already been cut.

Without new funding, the WFP warned, all assistance to the most vulnerable refugees would be suspended by August.

In Chad, where more than 850,000 people have fled but find little help in overwhelmed camps, the WFP said food rations would be reduced even further.

Around 1,000 refugees continue to arrive in Chad each day from Sudan’s western Darfur region, where famine has already been declared and displacement camps regularly come under attack.

“Refugees from Sudan are fleeing for their lives and yet are being met with more hunger, despair, and limited resources on the other side of the border,” said Hughes.

“Food assistance is a lifeline for vulnerable refugee families with nowhere else to turn.”

Inside Sudan, more than eight million people are estimated to be on the brink of famine, with nearly 25 million suffering dire food insecurity.

Edo Governor’s Legal Adviser Denies Supreme Court Delay Claims In Cabinet Appointments

, June 30, 2025

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

Legal Adviser to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, Andrew Ewanta, has debunked speculations that the governor is deliberately stalling the constitution of a full cabinet pending the outcome of the Supreme Court judgment on the 2023 governorship election.

Naija News reports that Ewanta, while speaking in Akure, insisted that Governor Okpebholo’s decision to appoint only nine commissioners so far is not politically motivated and has no bearing on the court case.

Reacting to claims that the administration was treading cautiously due to the ongoing legal tussle, Ewanta said, “That is not the reason. If he were waiting for the Supreme Court judgment, he would not have appointed the first set of commissioners. This is the first governor in Edo history to announce cabinet members on the day of inauguration.”

He emphasised that the governor has already appointed heads of agencies and special advisers in key ministries, adding that the administration is running “full throttle.”

“Some people joined us from the Labour Party and the PDP. We have to accommodate them. The appointments are strategic and based on merit, not fear,” he further stated.

Ewanta also shed light on the slow pace of road infrastructure across the state, attributing the delay to the 600 billion debt inherited from the Godwin Obaseki administration.

He said, “When the government came on board, the debts the previous administration owed, only for road contracts, were over 600bn.

“In the twilight of that administration, they began awarding contracts to their cronies. Those are now under review.”

He assured that Governor Okpebholo remains committed to completing all inherited projects and fulfilling promises made to communities across the state.

Addressing the controversy surrounding the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) project, Ewanta clarified that the governor had not reversed course but only expressed dissatisfaction with the previous administration’s handling of certain aspects.

He said, “The Governor never said he was going to revoke anything. He just expressed dismay with the manner some of those transactions were done. Edo State committed 3.5bn to the building of MOWAA. It provided premises. And again, the fact that you had to make a change of views, you had a hospital there, you had to demolish a hospital. I think that was what angered the Governor. It is not that he was going to abandon the project because of international interest involved, because funding for that place, more than 80% of the funds, comes from Europe. I mean, for lovers of art and the rest.

“The Governor is already partnering with them, and he said all projects from the previous administration will be completed. He will complete them.”

A suspect was arrested during the operation.
