Mumbai:
In what would be one of the biggest exercises, the Muslim community has come
together under one banner to study the causes of low representation of the
community in the Parliament and Legislatures of States and make urgent efforts
to bridge ...
For this
purpose, a committee would be formed with representatives across India,
according to the resolution passed at the Muslim Leadership Summit 2024, which
was hosted by Muslim Welfare Association (MWA) in Mumbai, over the weekend.
The
committee would be headed by internationally-renowned Islamic scholar
Khalil-ur-Rahman Sajjad Nomani Sahab - who is a pillar of the All India Muslim
Personal Law Board and veteran cleric Janab Tauqeer Raza Khan Sahab.
MWA
founder Saleem Sarang, who is a veteran social worker and politician, would be
a member and convenor of the committee.
“Very
soon the full committee would be announced which would undertake a detailed
study and come out with measures to ensure that representation of Muslims is
increased in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, State Assemblies and Councils, local
self-governmen...
According
to Sarang, the committee would travel across the country and meet MPs, MLAs and
MLCs, religious scholars, intellectuals, educationalists, students and so on.
The
conference urged political parties to ensure fair representation and candidacy
proportional to the Muslim population.
“Overall,
this committee will focus on securing political reservations and advocating for
the rights and demands of the Muslim community,” he said.
The
conference was attended by three Rajya Sabha MPs - Javed Ali Khan (Samajwadi
Party), Muizullah Khan (Samajwadi Party) and Zia Ur Rehman Barq (Biju Janata
Dal) and several MLAs Aslam Shaikh – (Congress), Amin Patel (Congress), Zeeshan
Siddique (Co...
The
summit underscored the need for continued advocacy and strategic initiatives to
enhance the socio-economic and political status of Muslims in Maharashtra.

August
15, When The Taliban Regained Power, Declared Public Holiday by Hibatullah
Akhundzada, The TalibanLeader
August
12, 2024
The
Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of Afghanistan has declared August 15 as a
public holiday, marking it as the “Victory of the Afghanistan Jihad against
Occupation.”
-----------
In a
statement released on August 11, the ministry stated that this day has been
declared a nationwide holiday in Afghanistan by order of Hibatullah Akhundzada,
the leader of the Taliban.
August
15, 2021, corresponds to the day when the Taliban regained power, leading to
the fleeing of President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani from Kabul, the withdrawal of
U.S. forces, and the end of NATO’s twenty-year mission in Afghanistan.
The
Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has also declared this day a public
holiday in the past two years.
However,
the return of the Taliban to power has been accompanied by widespread human
rights violations, particularly concerning women’s rights. The ban on education
for girls beyond the sixth grade has led to an increase in child marriages and
forced marriages, as families struggle with poverty and see no future for their
daughters in a country where education is restricted.
Reports
from various human rights organizations highlight the dire humanitarian crisis
in Afghanistan, exacerbated by growing poverty and unemployment.
The lack
of economic opportunities and the ongoing restrictions on basic freedoms have
plunged millions into poverty, forcing many to marry off their young daughters
as a means of survival.
The
deteriorating situation has also led to a significant increase in migration, as
Afghans seek refuge in other countries to escape the harsh conditions.
The
combination of economic hardship, human rights abuses, and lack of educational
opportunities has driven thousands to leave their homeland in search of a
better future.
The
international community continues to express concern over the worsening
conditions in Afghanistan and the implications for regional stability.

Pakistan
Has Become Battleground for New Cold War, Says Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl
August
12, 2024
Maulana
Fazlur Rehman addresses ‘Tajir Convention’ in Peshawar on Sunday. — White Star
-------------
PESHAWAR:
Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that
Pakistan is being squeezed economically as it has become a battleground for a
new cold war.
Addressing
a traders’ convention here on Sunday, he said that in the past, Afghanistan was
battleground for the cold war between the United States and Soviet Union.
However, the unipolar world was changing with the rise of China, he added.
“If
Afghanistan was a battleground for previous cold war, Pakistan is for the
current one, therefore, it is being squeezed economically,” said the JUI-F
chief.
He said
that Pakistan was nowhere to go as on one hand it was assuring a party that
China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was unlikely to work because influence
of armed groups had spread to the focus areas of the project. On the other
hand, Pakistan was asking Chinese to give it money for security, he added.
JUI-F
leader says PM and army chief returned empty handed from China
Mr
Rehman said that recently prime minister and chief of army staff visited China
to persuade it to invest in Pakistan, however, they returned empty handed.
“Chinese hosts told the visiting dignitaries that not only Pakistan was
politically unstable but its security was also unreliable; therefore, they
could not invest in the country,” he claimed.
He said
that Pakistan was the only country in the region that was sinking economically.
He said that the current parliament was not a representative of people. “A
parliament that does not enjoy public trust cannot resolve their problems,” he
added.
The
JUI-F chief said that during the Raj, locals did not used to pay taxes on the
grounds that payment of taxes would only prolong the colonial rule and would
not be spent on their welfare. He said that even after 77 years of creation of
Pakistan, people were not ready to trust rulers as they knew that the taxes
being collected would be used to pay debts and meet conditions of International
Monetary Fund.
He said
that government should first build trust of people that the taxes collected
from them would be spent on their welfare. “How people will pay taxes when they
don’t know as to who is ruling the country. Those in the front are being controlled
by someone else,” he added.
The
JUI-F chief questioned as to how the country was supposed to make progress when
only air and death were exempted from taxation. He said that only politicians,
who understood the issues of people and needs of country, could steer Pakistan
out of the present crises.
He
regretted that the portfolio of finance minister in the country was always
handed over to imported persons. He said that government imposed taxes on
farmers while incentives were denied to them. He said that caretaker government
imported wheat when the country’s crop was ready for harvest and now no one was
buying wheat from growers. “Where this will lead in future,” he questioned.
Mr
Rehman said that traders and industrialists should also be given incentives.
“If businesses thrive then the circulation of money would lead to economic
growth,” he said. He added that traders were the backbone of economy.
He said
that the present law and order situation was deplorable and traders were being
forced to pay extortion. On the other hand, he said, police stations in many
districts of the province were closed down in the evening and the areas were
controlled by armed groups.
The
JUI-F chief pledged to resist any attempt to change constitutional and
religious identity of the country.
JUI-F
provincial chief Maulana Attaur Rehman, Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(SCCI) president Faud Ishaq, Ilyas Bilour, former governor Haji Ghaulam Ali and
other trader leaders also spoke on the occasion.

UK
Treats Far-Right Attacks Less Harshly Than Islamist Violence, Says Royal United
Services Institute
11
August 2024

Starmer is shown CCTV screens at Lambeth police HQ in London. The prime
minister described an attack on a hotel housing asylum seekers as ‘far-right
thuggery’.Photograph: Toby Melville/PA
--------------
The UK
has a “two-tier approach” to extremism that fails to treat far-right attacks as
seriously as Islamist ones, a leading think-tank has said.
The
Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) says right-wing violence “is often
classified as mere thuggery” by politicians, prosecutors and the security
services. Equivalent acts by Islamists would “swiftly be labelled as
terrorism”, it says in an article in the Guardian.
A week
of riots across England and Northern Ireland that have targeted asylum hotels
and mosques have been fuelled by neo-Nazi and extreme-right activity.
Elon
Musk, the owner of X, and the Reform UK party leader, Nigel Farage, have
claimed that Keir Starmer’s government is implementing a “two-tier” criminal justice
system, with predominantly white rioters treated more harshly than non-white
counter-protesters.
An
article written by the directors of Rusi says a different double standard has
been exposed by this summer’s riots which has allowed far-right activity to
flourish.
“Rusi’s
research suggests that the nature of far-right violence, which is often seen as
low impact and disjointed, coupled with institutional bias and racism, means
that far-right violence has historically not triggered the same responses from
politicians, security services and the media as jihadist violent extremism.
“There
exists a clear double standard, or two-tier approach, in how different forms of
extremism are addressed, particularly when comparing security and legal
responses to far-right and Islamist violent extremism,” the article says.
Written
by Rusi’s acting director of the terrorism and conflict research group, Dr
Jessica White, the Rusi research fellow Claudia Wallner and its director of
terrorism and conflict studies, Emily Winterbotham, it calls for the threat
from the far right to be redefined.
“Far
right-motivated violence is often classified as mere ‘thuggery’ or hooliganism,
while similar acts motivated by Islamist extremism would likely be swiftly
labelled as terrorism. This inconsistency undermines the perceived severity of
far-right threats and hinders the political will and the necessary legal
precedent to take equivalent action,” it says.
Starmer
understated the politically driven actions of the far right, the authors claim,
when he described an attack on a hotel housing asylum seekers as “far-right
thuggery”. “While his [Starmer’s] intent was to acknowledge the ideological
underpinnings of the violence, the term ‘thuggery’ downplays the organised
networked, and ideological components of the riots, as well as the individuals
and groups involved,” the article says.
Rusi
sees merit in calls for severe incidents of far-right violence to be treated as
terrorism. “Recognising severe cases of far-right violence as terrorism would
align with a more equitable legal strategy, ensuring that all forms of
extremism are prosecuted with the seriousness they warrant,” the article says.
The recent riots should be seen in the context of “a pattern of violence”
across Europe largely ignored by politicians and the public.
“Similar
far-right riots have occurred in Dublin in 2023 and in Chemnitz in Germany in
2018, both in reaction to stabbings that sparked widespread anti-immigrant
sentiment, with far-right groups exploiting the incidents to incite violence
against migrants and refugees,” it says.
Rusi
maintains strong ties to the defence and security community. It claims to be
the world’s oldest thinktank, established in 1831 by the Duke of Wellington.
Allegations
of a two-tier system biased in favour of BAME or leftwing protesters emerged
after the pro-Palestinian protests in the UK since 7 October. The former
immigration minister Robert Jenrick, now a Conservative leadership candidate,
claimed in March that two-tier policing had governed the handling of those
protests.

Hamas
tells Gaza mediators to implement Biden truce plan instead of ‘more
negotiations’
August

City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood on August 11, 2024, amid the ongoing conflict
between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. (AFP)
--------------
GAZA:
Hamas on Sunday called on US, Qatari and Egyptian mediators to implement a
ceasefire plan for Gaza put forward by US President Joe Biden, instead of
holding “more negotiations.”
Hamas
“demands that the mediators present a plan to implement what they proposed to
the movement... based on Biden’s vision and the UN Security Council resolution,
and compel the occupation (Israel) to comply, rather than going through more
negotiation rounds or new proposals,” the Palestinian group said in a
statement.
Mediators
have invited both Israel and Hamas for a round of negotiations on Thursday.
Last
week, shortly after the killing of Hamas’s political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in
Tehran, Israel agreed to a new round of Gaza ceasefire talks to facilitate the
release of hostages still held in the Palestinian territory.
Iran and
Hamas have blamed Israel for the killing of Haniyeh.
Several
rounds of negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza have failed until now, except
for a one-week truce that was observed at the end of November.
That
truce saw the release of scores of hostages in exchange of dozens of
Palestinians prisoners who were held in Israeli jails.
On May
31, Biden unveiled what he said was a three-stage plan for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The
first phase of the plan includes a “full and complete ceasefire” lasting six
weeks, with Israeli forces withdrawing from “all populated areas of Gaza.”
Hamas
would release “a number” of hostages captured in the October 7 attacks,
including women, the elderly and the wounded. The remains of some hostages who
had been killed would also be returned.
Hundreds
of Palestinian prisoners would be released in exchange.
Palestinian
civilians would be allowed to return to their “homes and neighborhoods” throughout
Gaza, including in the north, which has been devastated by months of Israeli
bombing.
During
the initial six-week period, Israel and Hamas would “negotiate the necessary
arrangements to get to phase two, which is a permanent end to hostilities.”
The
ceasefire would also be extended if the negotiations continue, with mediators
working to ensure they continue, Biden said at the time.
In phase
two, also lasting around another six weeks, Israeli forces would completely
withdraw from Gaza.
Hamas
would release “all remaining living hostages” including male Israeli soldiers.
This has been a key sticking point for Hamas in the past.
If both
sides keep to the deal it will lead to the “cessation of hostilities
permanently,” Biden said, quoting what he said had been an Israeli proposal.
In the
third and final stage, a major reconstruction and stabilization plan for Gaza
would begin, backed by the US and the international community.
The
October 7 Hamas attacks resulted in the deaths of 1,198 people, mostly civilians,
according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
Militants
also seized 251 people, 111 of whom are still held in Gaza, including 39 the
Israeli military says are dead.
Israel’s
retaliatory military offensive in Gaza has killed at least 39,790 people,
according to the health ministry of the Hamas-run territory, which does not
provide details on civilian and militant deaths.

Ahead of
the assembly elections scheduled later this year, State Congress Minority
Committe general secretary Moiz Shaikh has urged the party leadership to field
candidates from Muslim community in at least 40 assembly constituencies out of
the 288 assembly seats of the state.
In a
memorandum to Maharashtra Congress Committee president Nana Patole, Shaikh
demanded fielding of 40 Muslim candidates in the upcoming polls.
Speaking
in Nanded, where a review meeting for preparation for the Assembly elections
was held, Shaikh said, “We have requested the MPCC president to field Muslim
members on at least 40 assembly seats that are dominated by the community…
Patole has assured us that since Muslim community has given its support to the
MVA in the recently held Lok Sabha election, leading them to win 31 seats, they
will not disappoint us.”
The
meeting was held in the presence of Congress state incharge Ramesh Chennithala,
MPCC president Nana Patole, legislative party leader Balasaheb Thorat and
Leader of the Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar.
Speaking
at a press conference, Chennithala said that for the development of
Maharashtra, oust the unconstitutional “Aaya Ram-Gaya Ram Mahayuti government”,
which was elected by the people but formed through “defections and
manipulations”, and bring the MVA government back to power.
“The
government has no funds for welfare schemes but are announcing perks eying
polls, using funds from other schemes… The Congress and MVA allies will contest
the Assembly elections together. The MVA aims to provide a capable government
for the people,” said Chennithala, who also condemned the incident in which the
convoy of Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray was attacked in Thane.

Don’t
Enrol Muslim VotersWho Have Moved from Other States: Goa RSS chief tells BJP
Aug 12,
2024
Panaji:
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Goa unit, has raised concern over the
increase of Muslim voters in the state. Goa RSS chief Rajendra Bhobe urged BJP
not to see Muslims as a vote bank and not to get those who have moved from
other states enrolled in the local voters’ list.
Bhobe
said instead Muslims who have come to Goa for work should vote in their
respective states. He said that the increase in Muslim voters will have an
impact on assembly election results in Goa.
After
the political development and change in regime in Bangladesh, Hindus were
attacked in that country, the Goa RSS chief said at rally to condemn the
atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh. “Their houses have been burned, their
businesses have been looted, and Hindu women have to face atrocities.”
Bhobe
said that this is not the first time, but similar atrocities have been
witnessed in the last 500 years against Hindus. “Hindus are sleeping. Will we
continue to sleep? In our country, there are many pockets where there is a
possibility of becoming another Pakistan if we continue to remain inactive,” he
said.
Bhobe
said that most of the time, the mindset of politicians is to look at it as a
vote bank. “If we have to live as Hindus, then some things we have to bring
into force,” the Goa RSS chief said.
He said
that when Bangladesh was carved out, the total population of Hindus was around
23%, but now it has reduced to 7%. “In the next 10 to 20 years, Hindus will be
wiped out from Bangladesh,” Bhobe said.
He said
that in Goa also, it has been said that a lot of Muslim brothers have moved to
the state via the rail and other routes. “As per our Constitution, we cannot stop
anyone from travelling to any state, but there is a need for govt and NGOs to
collect data,” Bhobe said.
In the
2022 assembly election, there were 85,000 Muslim voters in Goa, and the total
voters were 11.5 lakh. “They (Muslims) were 7.5% as only voters. Considering
their children, the total population of Muslims in Goa at that time will be
around 12%,” Bhobe said.
The Goa
RSS chief said that he has raised the issue with BJP. “In the 2027 assembly
elections, the same voters from the existing 7.5% will touch 10 to 12%. They
should not be seen as a vote bank and don’t enrol them as voters. They have
come to work and let them vote in their respective villages. If their vote
share increases, then there is a possibility of an impact on results,” Bhobe
said.
He said
that in Goa, the total voters in each constituency vary between 30,000 to
35,000 voters. “In the 2022 assembly elections, we have seen in seven
constituencies where we have won seats by 400, 500, 140 and 70 votes. We have
also seen losing the South Goa Lok Sabha seat by a 13,000 margin,” Bhobe said.
He said
that in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, the environment was such
that we thought that BJP would have a clean sweep, but BJP did not sweep the
election and from 302 seats they reduced to 241 seats. “The reason behind it is
Hindus remain dormant and overconfident as the Ram Mandir, Article 370 and
triple talaq issues were resolved and govt took economic measures and all
considered that BJP would cross 400 seats,” the Goa RSS chief said.
He said
that in Goa, it was 72% voting, but what was the Hindu voting percentage?
“Overall voting was 72%. Minority voting was 90%. The same situation was in UP,
Maharashtra and Rajasthan,” Bhobe said.

Suspecting

After

individuals,” said a police officer from Sambalpur, in the know of the
development.
In a
similar incident in Basudevpur area of Bhadrak district on Sunday, several
residents rounded up seven other persons — suspecting them to be infiltrators —
and handed them over to the local police. On this, police said they are still
verifying their identity and will take action accordingly.
West
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday made a phone call to her Odisha
counterpart Mohan Charan Majhi, and requested him to look into the alleged
incidents of assault on labourers from her state in Odisha, a senior official
said on Sunday.
“Several
people from West Bengal have gone to Odisha to work. There are reports that
they are being beaten up and tortured by the locals, on suspicion that they are
from Bangladesh. The West Bengal CM spoke to her Odisha counterpart and
requested him to look into the matter at the earliest,” the official said.
Banerjee
also urged the labourers to return to West Bengal as soon as possible, and grab
opportunities available in their own state.
When
contacted, BJP Sambalpur unit president Girish Patel said that they had handed
over the 34 individuals to police after they failed to provide satisfactory
details about their identity, address, and names of parents during questioning.
“Many Bangladeshi nationals, pretending to be natives of Murshidabad district
in West Bengal, enter as well as reside across Sambalpur illegally. They then settle
here,” Patel told The Indian Express.
Patel
also alleged that the 34 individuals possessed fake Aadhaar cards. “They could
not provide proper information about their parents and native places. So, we
handed them over to police. We will continue to do so,” Patel said.
Odisha,
which has a long coastline of around 480 km, has already sounded alert to the
coastal districts of Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Balasore among
others. During a meeting with various agencies, including the Intelligence Bureau,
Indian Navy and Coast Guard, the state government directed officials to secure
its coasts and prevent infiltration of Bangladeshi nationals into Odisha.
According
to the Central government’s refugee resettlement policy, as many as 1,57,432
Bangladeshi settlers have been rehabilitated in 11 districts of the state, with
over 80 per cent of them in Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts — as Indian
citizens. Besides, official data also showed that there are as many as 3,740
Bangladeshi infiltrators in Odisha, in districts such as Kendrapada, Bhadrak,
Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Khurda.

‘So many
troops on border, how are (terrorists) coming in?’: Farooq Abdullah talks of
‘collusion’
Senior
BJP leaders and former deputy chief ministers, Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta,
described Abdullah’s statement as “utterly baseless” and made “out of
frustration after having lost political relevance” in the J&K.
Written
by Arun Sharma
August
12, 2024
National
Conference president and former Jammu Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah
Sunday suggested collusion was to blame for the spurt in cross-border
infiltration and smuggling of narcotics into Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing
party workers in Kishtwar, he said, “Mujhe bataiye, itni fauj hai humarey
border pe, kisi bhi mulk mein itni fauj nahi hai. Phir bhi yeh log kaise aa
rahey hein. Yeh dawiayan kaise aa rahi hain. Miley huey hain. Humari barbadi ke
liye mile hue hain (We have so many troops deployed on the border; no other country
has such deployment. How are they (terrorists) coming in? How are narcotics
coming in? They have colluded, colluded for our destruction.”
“We
believed and had faith in them (the establishment) for ten years, but they said
one thing and did the other. Our educated children protested and faced batons,”
he said, adding that he cannot explain the atrocities inflicted on NC workers.
He also
said the BJP lost even in Ayodhya, where they constructed the Ram Mandir,
because people’s homes were demolished and their land was taken away to
construct airports and roads.
He
appealed to the people to unite for safeguarding the future of the Union
Territory and for their support in the upcoming Assembly elections. His
comments come against the backdrop of a series of terror attacks in both Jammu
and Kashmir.
Senior
BJP leaders and former deputy chief ministers, Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta,
described Abdullah’s statement as “utterly baseless” and made “out of
frustration after having lost political relevance” in the J&K.
Abdullah
often makes such statements but no one takes them seriously, Singh told
reporters in Doda, adding that the NC leader is known for speaking “nonsense”.
Gupta
said Abdullah’s reckless and baseless accusations are nothing but a desperate
attempt to regain lost political ground. “His insinuations of collusion between
our honorable Indian Army and terrorists are not only unfounded but also a
grave insult to the brave men and women who sacrifice their lives to protect
our nation,” he said. “His heart beats for Pakistan and not for the soldiers
who work in adverse conditions in J&K and on the borders.”
Ghulam
Nabi Azad-led Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) also took objection to
Abdullah’s remarks. “He is a senior politician and it is very unfortunate that
he has questioned the bravery of the Indian Army. This is like questioning the
sacrifice of brave soldiers,” DPAP spokesperson Ashwani Handa said.

Bangladeshi nationals held while infiltrating into India: BSF
August
11, 2024
Eleven
Bangladeshi nationals have been apprehended while trying to infiltrate into
India through international border in West Bengal, Tripura and Meghalya, the
Border Security Force (BSF) said on Sunday.
They are
being questioned and will be handed over to state police for further legal
action, a spokesperson said.
He said
the BSF was in regular touch with its counterpart BGB to sort out mutual
issues, especially the prevention of atrocities on Indian nationals and people
from minorities communities in Bangladesh.
The
South Bengal Frontier of the force headquartered in Kolkata said in a statement
that its eastern command head, Additional Director General (ADG) Ravi Gandhi,
chaired an operational conference on Saturday to review security along the
4,096-km-long India-Bangladesh border “amid the current unrest in Bangladesh”
and the upcoming Independence Day on August 15.
It said,
“11 Bangladeshi nationals have been apprehended on border while infiltrating
into India. Two each were nabbed from West Bengal and Tripura borders while
seven were apprehended from Meghalaya border.” They are being questioned and
will be handed over to state police for further legal action, he said.
Festive
offer
The
spokesperson said BSF ADG (eastern command) Ravi Gandhi chaired a meeting on
Saturday to review security all along this border.
“Detailed
deliberations were held to further enhance border control, security and
management. Besides, it was decided to continue the close collaboration with
counterpart Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB),” he said.
The BSF
has been holding flag meetings with the BGB to sort out mutual issues amicably,
especially for the prevention of atrocities on Indian nationals and people from
minorities communities in Bangladesh and counterpart BGB has been responding
well, he said.
The Union
home ministry recently formed a committee under the ADG to look into issues
being faced by minorities in Bangladesh following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina
government.

Six
Afghan citizens freed from Pakistani prisons
August
11, 2024
According
to reports, these individuals were freed on Saturday, August 10, following
efforts by the consulate of Afghanistan in Karachi.
Officials
stated that these individuals, despite having immigration cards, were detained
for unknown reasons.
Previously,
dozens of Afghan migrants, including children, were arrested by Pakistani
forces due to a lack of legal residency documents.
Reports
of the detention, torture, and mistreatment of Afghan migrants in both Iran and
Pakistan have been increasing.
The
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) also reported that
approximately 1,000 Afghan migrants and asylum seekers were detained by
Pakistani forces during the first three months of 2024.
Statistics
from the UNHCR show that since September 15, 2023, around 547,000 Afghans have
returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan.
The
increasing number of Afghan migrants facing detention and mistreatment in
neighboring countries has raised serious concerns among international human
rights organizations.
The
international community is being urged to take more decisive action to prevent
further human rights violations and to support the safe and dignified return of
Afghan migrants to their homeland.

Explosion
in Kabul’s Dasht-e-Barchi leaves one dead, eleven injured
August
11, 2024
Khalid
Zadran, the spokesperson for the Kabul police, has reported that today’s
explosion in the Dasht-e-Barchi area resulted in one death and eleven injuries.
Khalid
Zadran, the spokesperson for the Kabul police, stated in a press release that a
planted mine explosion in a passenger vehicle in the Dasht-e-Barchi area of
Kabul city caused the death of one person and injured eleven civilians.
Mr.
Zadran added that security forces have arrived at the scene, and investigations
are ongoing.
So far,
no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion.
Since
the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, insecurity in the country has
increased, particularly due to the activities of ISIS, which poses a
significant challenge to the current regime.
ISIS,
considering itself an adversary of the Taliban, has carried out numerous
attacks targeting both civilians and Taliban forces.
The
escalation of violence by ISIS has further destabilized the already fragile
security situation in Afghanistan, leading to increased fear and uncertainty
among the population.
The
ongoing conflict between ISIS and the Taliban is complicating the Taliban’s
efforts to establish control and maintain order across the country.
The
increased activities of ISIS in Afghanistan have not only heightened insecurity
within the country but have also raised alarm among regional and global
players. These actors have expressed serious concerns about the escalating
threat posed by ISIS, particularly as the group extends its operations into
neighboring Pakistan.

Nearly 2
million migrants returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan
August
11, 2024
Officials
from the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation released these statistics during
a press conference held at the Government Media Information Center.
According
to the ministry, a total of 1,779,603 Afghan migrants have returned to
Afghanistan from Iran, Pakistan, and other countries.
The
ministry also stated that 788,821 internally displaced and returning families
received cash and non-cash assistance, and arrangements were made for the
relocation of 96,293 returning families to their desired areas.
Officials
further clarified that 5,766 Afghan migrants imprisoned in Pakistan and Turkey
were released and returned home. The ministry’s annual report also noted that
4,000 Afghans who were detained for various crimes in Iran were transferred
back to Afghanistan, and 600 Afghan migrants in Pakistan and Iran were provided
the opportunity to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.
This
situation unfolds against a backdrop of increasing deportations of Afghan
migrants from Iran and Pakistan in recent times.
The
ongoing surge in deportations highlights the critical need for comprehensive
support and reintegration strategies for returning migrants. The international
community and local authorities must work collaboratively to ensure that these
individuals and families are provided with the necessary resources and
opportunities to rebuild their lives in Afghanistan.
Addressing
the root causes of migration and creating sustainable living conditions in
Afghanistan will be crucial in preventing further displacement and ensuring the
long-term stability of the region.

After
Hasina: Cautious optimism for Bangladesh’s future
August
12, 2024
By all
quantifiable measures, Bangladesh’s now deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
was the most entrenched, dominant and brutal dictator the country had seen
since its independence. She jailed, exiled and eliminated most of her political
peers like no other ruler in South Asia’s history. She brought all the branches
of the Bangladeshi state under her command with such great efficacy that at
some point she became the state. Yet, a leaderless movement of college students
challenged her with marches with pre-announced dates and venues. In a matter of
weeks, these young revolutionaries drew the nation with them into the streets
to the point that Hasina had to catch a helicopter to flee. They achieved
something that established political rivals of the former prime minister had
tried for over a decade but failed consistently. While the young
revolutionaries and their supporters have much cause to celebrate, the road
ahead for the country will not be without challenges. A recipe for a successful
student movement The beginning of the end for Hasina came as a group of young
people started making demands for the removal of an unfair quota system in the
distribution of civil service jobs, which was essentially giving preferential
treatment to the relatives of her political cronies. In organising their
protests, the students created a distributed co-leadership structure, where the
leaders held the role of coordinators. They called their coalition the Students
Against Discrimination movement. The coordinators came from both public and
private educational institutions. What could have been quelled with some simple
promises of future reforms was inflamed by crass comments by the prime minister
and brutal suppression by her security forces. But the protest organisers were
battle-tested and knew exactly what to expect. Just six years ago, many of them
had participated as teenagers in another massive wave of demonstrations which
focused on the country’s lawless transportation sector. Those protests erupted
after a commercial bus ran over two students. The vehicle that caused these
deaths was owned by a company linked to a relative of a minister. Aljazeera

Pakistan
Members
of parliament 'fake representatives' of people: Fazl
August
11, 2024
Jamiat
Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) has once again criticised his former allies — who
now sit in the federal government, calling the members of the parliament
"fake representatives" of the people.
The
JUI-F has been demanding to conduct fresh polls to ensure that people have the
opportunity to elect their true representatives to the legislature as he is
adamant that the February 9 general elections were “rigged.”
After
the elections, the JUI-F became estranged from the ruling party, the Pakistan
Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), amid
accusations of rigging, interference and manipulation of the 2024 election
results.
The
cleric, who headed a multi-party opposition alliance — Pakistan Democratic
Movement (PDM) — which successfully ousted former prime minister Imran Khan
from power via a no-confidence motion in 2022, has also been in talks with the
Khan-founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), for devising a strategy to force
the incumbent government into new elections.
"Fake
representatives of the people are sitting in Parliament, not the real ones,
[...] who don't think about the masses," Fazl said while addressing a
traders' convention in Peshawar.
Criticising
the government over the country's economic and security situation, the veteran
politician stated that if any country in the region was regressing, it was
Pakistan.
He
slammed the government for the increased taxes — something that has irked the
inflation-hit masses and opposition parties alike — saying that "the only
thing that has not been taxed yet is breathing".
Among
the political opponents of the ruling coalition, Jamat-e-Islami (JI) is also
pushing for a reduction in taxes. The party recently ended its nearly
two-week-long protest sit-in in Rawalpindi following "successful
negotiations" with the federal government.
"Why
should we pay the taxes when people know their money will be used to repay foreign
loans," he stated, adding, "This is not how the countries are run,
politicians run the country."
In his
ongoing criticism of the ruling coalition, Fazl, whose party was once a close
ally of PML-N and PPP, stated: "I had informed Mian Sahib (Nawaz Sharif)
the country’s economy has collapsed."
He asked
why sub-standard wheat was imported when the farmers in the country had it in
stock.
The
JUI-F chief then called for the facilitation of the traders and farmers, saying
that the country wouldn't stabilise as long as its economy was not strong.
Fazl
also took exception to the choice of finance ministers in the past. He said
that the portfolio of the finance ministry "is given to the ones who have
been imported".
"A
person became Pakistan's premier out of nowhere; we don't know where he came
from," said Rehman alluding to former prime minister Moeen Qureshi.
"One
was first appointed finance minister, and then he became prime minister, with
no one knowing where he came from. The finance portfolio is given to clueless
people."
"Prime
ministers come and go without anyone knowing where they came from and where
they went. Someone is on the front, while the strings are pulled by someone
else," Maulana Fazlur Rehman added without naming anyone.
The
country, Fazl said, was going through a critical situation and his party could
play a role in strengthening the economy.
"Peace
and a better economy should be the priorities," he added.

President
Zardari, PM Sharif extend messages of support, solidarity on Minorities’ Day
August
11, 2024
The
government declared August 11 as National Minorities Day in 2009. The date
coincides with the historic speech delivered by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali
Jinnah on August 11, 1947, where he promised to protect the rights and
religious freedoms of minorities in the country, which Zardari vowed to uphold.
According
to state-run Radio Pakistan, President Zardari said religious minorities enjoy
all political, economic, and social rights guaranteed in the Constitution.
“The
President said the government has taken a number of steps for the political,
social, and economic empowerment of minorities”, the report said.
“He
urged all segments of society to educate people about their rights and work for
promoting interfaith harmony, the spirit of love, tolerance, brotherhood, and
unity to make Pakistan a strong country.”
Prime
Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed his best wishes for members of minority
communities living in Pakistan and appreciated their services rendered in
various fields.
“Our
minority community played a key role in the Pakistan Movement and, since the
creation of Pakistan, has been contributing immensely to nation-building,” the
report quoted him as saying.
Meanwhile,
messages of appreciation also poured in from the armed forces, according to a
statement released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
“The
Armed Forces of Pakistan, the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, and the
Services Chiefs extend warm felicitations to the minority communities of
Pakistan on their dedicated day, acknowledging their indispensable
contributions to the nation’s progress, prosperity, and rich cultural
heritage,” the statement read.
“This
occasion serves as a poignant reminder of the diversity, inclusivity, and
harmonious coexistence that are the hallmarks of our great nation,” it said,
adding that minority communities are an “integral and vital part of our social
fabric, and their rights and freedoms are sacrosanct, as enshrined in the Constitution
and Islam.”
The
Armed Forces of Pakistan honour the unwavering commitment, dedication, and
sacrifices of the minority communities, recognizing their unshakeable loyalty
to the nation and their invaluable role in fostering a cohesive and pluralistic
society, the statement said.
“We
celebrate their spirit and reiterate our commitment to protecting and promoting
their rights, freedoms, and welfare.”
PPP
Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari called for the creation of an environment where
everyone thrives.
“On the
occasion of this day, let us resolve that every individual’s opinion is
important irrespective of his religion,” he said in a statement on social media
platform X.
He
reiterated that it was his father who designated August 11 as National Minorities

freedom to practice their faiths — a vision that continues to guide the country
today.
The

committed by the Israeli government under Prime Minister Netanyahu.
PM
Shehbaz criticised the global community's muted response to these acts, calling
it a grave failure of international organisations tasked with maintaining
global peace.

Bailable

August
11, 2024
LAHORE:
An anti-terrorism court on Saturday issued bailable arrest warrants for
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf social media activist Sanam Javed for skipping the
hearing of a May 9 case against her.
ATC
Judge Khalid Arshad conducted a jail trial of the Shadman police station attack

The
lawyers for the MPAs requested a one-time exemption from personal appearance.

Calls
for end to racially motivated hate crimes after attack on Co Down mosque
11th Aug
2024
A petrol
bomb was thrown at the mosque in Co Down in the early hours of Saturday, while
cars were set alight in Belfast , in incidents described by police as racially
motivated hate crimes.
The
mosque in Newtownards was attacked at around 1am on Saturday , with graffiti
sprayed on the front door and walls of the building in Greenwell Street.
Police
said the petrol bomb did not ignite.
Alistair
Cathcart , mayor of Ards and North Down, said the mosque has been in Ards for
more than 20 years.
"Its
members are our neighbours, friends and colleagues," he added.
"It
is a great relief that the nobody was hurt. There is no justification for
racism, violence and intimidation in our communities and like others I would
call for it to stop."
The
attacks happened hours before thousands of people took to the streets of Belfast
on Saturday in an anti-racism demonstration.
Up to
15,000 people took part in the demonstration, which began at Belfast's Writer's
Square before making its way to City Hall.
Several
protests in Belfast city also passed without incident on Friday evening, but
police said officers are investigating a number of reports of damage to
property and vehicles.
Cars

Northern
Irish first minister condemns mosque attack and other violence
11
August 2024
Northern
Ireland’s first minister and deputy first minister have condemned a racist
attack on a mosque in County Down and last night’s violence in Derry.
The
mosque was attacked at about 1am on Saturday, when graffiti was sprayed on the
front door and walls of the building in Greenwell Street.
A petrol
bomb was thrown at the mosque in Newtownards in the early hours of Saturday,
and cars were set alight in Belfast, in incidents described by police as
racially motivated hate crimes. Police said the petrol bomb did not ignite.
Up to 10
police officers were injured in disorder in Derry on Saturday night.
Michelle
O’Neill and Emma Little-Pengelly said the incidents were “wrong, unacceptable
and rejected” by the vast majority of the community. In a joint statement, they
said: “They are disgraceful manifestations of criminality and have absolutely
no justification.
“Our
thoughts are with those PSNI officers injured last night and the victims of
recent racist attacks. This senseless violence and intimidation has no place in
our society and we would appeal for calm.
“Those
responsible should be quickly brought before the courts and we urge anyone with
information to provide it to the PSNI.”
There
were calls for an end to racially motivated hate crimes after the Islamic
centre was attacked over the weekend.
Alistair
Cathcart, mayor of Ards and North Down, said the mosque has been in Ards for
more than 20 years. “Its members are our neighbours, friends and colleagues,”
he added.
“It is a
great relief that the nobody was hurt. There is no justification for racism,
violence and intimidation in our communities and like others I would call for

Man (42)
Arrested Over Petrol Bomb Attack On Bangladesh Islamic Centre
InNewtownardsMosque
Police
have arrested a man in connection with an attack on a mosque in Co Down.
A petrol
bomb was thrown at the Bangladesh Islamic Centre in Newtownards in the early
hours of Saturday morning.
The
device failed to ignite and was discovered in the car park by worshippers who
had returned to their vehicles after reciting late night prayers.
On
Sunday night, police revealed a 42-year-old man had been detained.
A PSNI
spokesperson said: “Detectives investigating an attack on a mosque in Greenwell
Street in Newtownards in the early hours of Saturday August 10 have arrested a
man following searches at two properties in Newtownards on Sunday August 11.
“The
man, aged 42, was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including
attempted arson, possessing a petrol bomb and attempted intimidation.
“He
remains in police custody at this time.
“Enquiries
are continuing and anyone with any information or footage that could assist the
investigation is asked to contact police”.
Previously
police said the centre, which in 2018 was targeted by loyalists dressed as the
Ku Klux Klan, was attacked at around 1am on Saturday.
Footage
of a culprit spraying graffiti on the building was caught on CCTV.
Abdul
Rob, who attends the faith centre with four generations of his family, said his
community is on edge.
"People
are very scared, but no one is going to leave – this is how everyone feels.”
The
Muslim Council of Northern Ireland condemned the latest attack and expressed
“deep sorrow” over what it described as “mindless Islamophobic hate”.
“We know
that those perpetrators represent only a small minority of individuals with a
far right agenda which is detrimental to the prosperity of Northern Ireland,” a
spokesperson said.
“We
extend our warm gratitude for the overwhelming support received from all
quarters including churches, MLAs and neighbours.”
It
added: “We value our relationships with all communities and continue to work
with relevant authorities on the betterment of society and to restore the
friendly face of the Northern Irish Society which it is well known for.”
Mayor of
Ards and North Down Alistair Cathcart also condemned Saturday’s attack.
“The
mosque has been here in Ards for more than 20 years and its members are our
neighbours, friends and colleagues,” he said.

Loyalist
race-hate gangsters ‘plot attack’ on Belfast Islamic Centre
Muslim
prayer and social hub is given round-the-clock PSNI protection after far-right
thugs put it at the top of their target list as paramilitary chiefs secretly
steer race hate mobs
Loyalist
race hate gangsters are planning to ramp up their anti-immigrant violence with
fears that the Belfast Islamic Centre (BIC) could be the target of an attack.
The
Centre on Belfast’s University Road is regarded as the “golden egg’’ and is a
top priority for far-right fascist terrorists, a source has claimed.
Today
the Sunday World reveals how loyalist paramilitaries are deeply involved in the
orgy of race hate crimes, and are planning a sustained campaign of violence.
We also
reveal how the anti-immigrant group behind race hate attacks are part of a
Europe-wide network of far-right groups mobilising across the continent.
Shadowy
figures are believed to be plotting a “spectacular’’ at the BIC – but anyone
involved in race hate attack such as this will face the full weight of the law.
The PSNI said this week it is determined that Muslims are protected even if it
means police officers putting their own safety on the line.
The
Centre has been under round-the-clock surveillance and protection by the PSNI.
Apart from a brief protest there last weekend, it has remained untouched.
This
week’s headlines have been dominated by reports of racial violence – images of
burning cars and burnt-out shops and restaurants have been the daily diet.
But
attacks on homes and businesses mask a more sinister plan.
The
Sunday World can reveal that despite their denials, senior loyalist figures are
deeply involved in the planning and execution of race hate attacks.
The
official line is one of non-involvement. However, well-placed loyalist sources
have told us the reality is that while senior figures are taking a back seat,
they are monitoring every incident and movement.
UDA
members on Sandy Row were warned by the leadership last week that if they
venture onto the streets they should “cover-up’’ and not have their pictures
plastered across the papers and TV screens.
“We
can’t stop people making their own decisions,” said our source, “if they are
pictured they will end up in jail, we have warned them, the rest is up to
them.”
This
week the PSNI published images of men they wish to speak to. The pictures of
suspects in their 30s and 40s give a lie to the notion that the street
disturbances are being carried out by teenagers.
The
civil unrest masks a deeply sinister plan of an orchestrated campaign against
the Islamic population.
Sources
have told us there are plans for a attack on the Islamic Centre, a stone’s throw
from Sandy Row which has been at the epicentre of the last week’s violence.
“They
will bide their time,” said our source, “they want to turn it into a car park,
that’s the sort of language they are using.”
He said
the Centre was a “prized target” and the race to attack the building has been
discussed by far-right groups across the UK.
The
revelations will leave Muslims frightened – particularly in light of
yesterday’s bid to firebomb a mosque in Newtownards.
The
Sunday World can also reveal that senior UDA figures were constantly monitoring
last week’s demonstration and subsequent violence. Loyalists were streaming
into the city centre demonstration as it left Belfast City Hall and headed to
the south of the city where they attacked businesses on Botanic Avenue and
Sandy Row, with the footage being watched by senior paramilitary figures.
“This is
not a UDA operation,” said our source, “the organisation cannot be seen to be
endorsing this in any way, too much rides on their neutrality in terms of
government grants for community projects – but make no mistake they are up to
their eyes in it.”
The
source added that a central plank to the campaign of intimidation and terror
going forward is the green light to attack foreign nationals on the street.
Last
week a man was left with serious injuries after he was the victim of an
unprovoked attack on the Donegall Road in the south of the city.
Witnesses
described how his attackers were stamping on his head. The Sunday World
understands there was a clear intention to kill, the plan was to drop a breeze
block on his head but it was only the brave intervention of a group of women
that undoubtedly saved his life.
“The
street violence will settle down, but it will be replaced by a more targeted
campaign.
“There
are men who are sitting back, they are not interested in attacking homes or
bricking the police, but they are prepared to do what is necessary.”
Shockingly,
our source added: “Their focus is the ‘boats’, and they believe by attacking
the Islamic Centre and attacking Muslims on the street it will deter people
from coming.”
The PSNI
has been frustrated in their attempts to open lines of communication with those
orchestrating the violence. There is no cohesive or visible group, while
approaches to loyalist paramilitaries have been met with a firm “nothing to do
with us”.
One
police source told us: “In similar public order situations such as the flag
protests, or parades disputes or even the violence around the Protocol, there
are people on the ground we could contact.
“In this
instance we don’t know who to contact.”
Yesterday
signalled a tougher police response. A number of houses on Sandy Row and the
Donegall Road were searched, at least one of whom is belonged to a known UDA
commander.
Race
hate groups across Europe are in constant contact, mostly via social media
platform Telegram which is more secure than more conventional platforms.
We
understand there has been contact with groups in Italy, Spain, Poland, England
and in the Republic.
Far-right
protesters were at the forefront of last week’s demonstration in Belfast and
were given a hero’s welcome on Sandy Row where they were hosted by a suspect in
the Graham’s Bookies massacre.
Belfast
Islamic Centre was established in 1978 to provide a focus for all Muslims
living in Northern Ireland. It acts as both a place of worship and a social
hub. The Centre says there are up to 10,000 Muslims in Northern Ireland.

Muslim
organisations urge govt to ban EDL as terrorist organisation
11th
August 2024
Muslim
organisations have written to the Prime Minister and Home Secretary calling for
the proscription of the English Defence League as a terrorist organisation.
The
organisations say: “the recent surge in Extreme Right-Wing violence, driven by
extremist figures led by Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, also known as ‘Tommy Robinson’…
has created a climate of terror for ethnic minorities and Muslims across the
country.”
They say
that law enforcement and intelligence agencies have failed to contain this
growing threat so they have come together to request that the EDL is proscribed
as a terrorist organisation.
The
Muslim, Black and Asian legal organisations are: Association of Muslim Lawyers,
Society of Black Lawyers, Black Lives Matter, Legal Action for Peace, Society
of Asian Lawyers, Federation of Redbridge Muslim Organisations, Aziz
Foundation, Restless Beings, Muslim Women of Merton, Finsbury Park Mosque,
Muslim Public Affairs Committee, Muslim Professionals Forum, Balham Mosque
& Tooting Islamic Centre, Muslim Association of Britain and Parents United.
Their
letter states: “Yaxley-Lennon has been inciting his followers by fuelling
hatred towards Muslims and ethnic minorities including refugees. On 1st June,
he launched his documentary ‘Lawfare’ which covers his warped perception that
there is a ‘two-tier policing’ system of the pro-Palestinian protests as
opposed to those that were against the pro-Palestinian protests in support of
Israel’s ‘plausible genocide’ of the Palestinians…
“You
will have seen from video footage of those that support Yaxley-Lennon’s
dangerous rhetoric, the phrase ‘two-tier policing’ is now also being used
repeatedly across mainstream media as well as amongst his followers online…
“Since
his first protest on 1st June, Yaxley-Lennon has increased his rhetoric by
inciting his followers to commit violence against Muslims, refugees and
ultimately people of colour. You can see that he has continued to repeat his
claims of ‘two-tier policing’ which is now being extended to extremely
dangerous and sinister claims of a ‘two-tier government.’ At the time of
writing, Yaxley-Lennon continues to publish conspiracy theories and false
narratives.
“We
consider that Yaxley-Lennon has been inciting terrorism via his tweets to large
audiences. In a video on 4th August, he said in anger ‘Men will rise up, they
were always going to rise up, they have to rise up to defend their families.’ A
hotel, housing asylum seekers, was set on fire by his supporters on 4th August
in Tamworth placing their lives and hotel staff at risk…
“In
light of Yaxley-Lennon’s conduct including incitement and the continued
association and presence of former EDL members at his protests, it is our view
that EDL meets the statutory test to proscribe EDL in order to protect the
public from its members…
“We
cannot in good conscience risk our lives or the lives of our families by
returning to normality until the EDL is proscribed. The government’s
responsibility to protect its citizens is paramount, and we urge you to act
swiftly and decisively to restore peace and security. We remain open to
dialogue and are ready to assist in any way possible to ensure the safety of
all citizens and refugees in this country.”
English
Defence League
Under
the Terrorism Act 2000, the Home Secretary may proscribe an organisation if
they believe it is concerned with terrorism, and it is proportionate to do so.
Under
the Act, terrorism means the use or threat of action which involves serious
violence against a person, serious damage to property, endangers a person’s
life or creates a risk to life, to influence the government or intimidate the
public.
It must
also be carried out with the aim to advance a political, religious, racial or
ideological cause.
The EDL
was founded in 2009 and experienced its heyday in 2011.
Tommy
Robinson – a former member of the BNP who had a criminal conviction for assault
– became the group’s de facto leader shortly after it was formed.
Ideologically,
it rejected the idea that Muslims can truly be English, while promoting Islam
as a threat to European values and blaming a perceived decline in “English
culture” on high immigration rates.
The
profile of the EDL rose dramatically between 2010 and 2013, but soon began to
lose momentum – partly due to in-fighting among the group’s different factions.
The
group was then revealed to have links to Norwegian far-right activist Anders
Behring Breivik, the perpetrator of a series of bombing and shooting attacks in
July 2011 that killed 77 people.
Robinson
left the organisation in 2013, amid fears he could not control the group’s more
violent followers.
Robinson
said on X: “The riots are by local residents fed up. Nothing to do with the EDL
which closed down over a decade ago.”
On the
other hand, Merseyside police said supporters of the EDL appeared prominent in
the Southport disorder after rioters clashed with police outside a mosque.

Man with
Irish accent arrested over racist abuse of bus driver in London
11-08-24
A man
with an Irish accent who racially abused and spat at a bus driver has been
convicted in the UK.
Police
were called to the scene on Coldharbour Lane in Hayes, southeast London on
Wednesday afternoon, August 7, after the bus driver refused to let Michael
Mongan (39) onboard as he could not afford the fare for his journey.
Mongan
then spat at the driver, who was protected by a screen, a number of times and
shouted Islamophobic abuse at him.
A video
of the incident is circulating on social media, where Mongan can be heard
calling the driver a “Muslim terrorist b*****d” and hitting the screen blocking
the driver with his fist.
He also
repeatedly shouts “you get off the bus” at the driver as shocked bystanders
look on.
The clip
has been viewed more than five million times.
Mongan
was quickly identified and arrested on Friday and was charged with a racially
aggravated public order offence and criminal damage.
The
39-year-old pleaded guilty to both charges at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on
Saturday, 10 August.
He was
remanded in custody for sentencing at the same court on Tuesday, 13 August.
Detective
Inspector Jonathan Potter, of the Roads and Transport Policing Command, said:
"The bus driver who was racially abuse and spat at by Michael Mongan was
simply doing his job. He and all other staff who work across London's transport
network have a right to do so in safety, free from unacceptable threats and
intimidation.
"I
hope the fast response from our officers sends a clear message that we will act
to hold those who behave in this way to account.
"I'm
glad Mongan has been swiftly brought to justice and will now face the
consequences of his actions."
The
footage emerged as violent scenes continue to unfold across England and
Northern Ireland, with a mosque targeted in an attempted arson attack in Co
Down last night.
It’s one
of a series of overnight race-hate incidents being investigated by police.
The
mosque on Greenwell Street in Newtownards was attacked at around 1am.
A petrol
bomb was thrown but failed to ignite and racist graffiti was daubed on the
building.
Cars
were also set alight in Tavanagh Street and Sandhurst Gardens in Belfast - both
incidents are being treated as racially motivated hate crimes.
The rear
door of a restaurant on Ormeau Road was also kicked and racial slurs shouted at
the workers inside.

Hezbollah
says two fighters killed in Israeli strike
August
11, 2024
BEIRUT:
Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement said an Israeli air strike on Sunday killed two
fighters from the Iran-backed group, with the health ministry reporting another
death from an attack days ago.
Hezbollah
has traded near-daily fire with Israel in support of its ally Hamas since October.
Tensions
have skyrocketed since a strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs late last month
killed Hezbollah’s top military commander, Fuad Shukr, just hours before the
assassination, blamed on Israel, of Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh in
Tehran.
An
“Israeli strike that targeted the village of Taybeh today left two dead,” the
Lebanese health ministry said in a statement.
Hezbollah
confirmed they were group fighters, killed in Taybeh near the border with
Israel.
The
official National News Agency reported that “a drone fired two missiles on the
village of Taybeh.”
The
Israeli military said it had “struck throughout the day several Hezbollah
military structures in the area of Adaisseh,” which is located next to Taybeh.
In
another statement later on Sunday the military said its forces had “struck a
Hezbollah terrorist cell in the area of Taybeh” as well as “a military
structure in the area of Derdghaiya.”
“Following
the strike, secondary explosions were identified, indicating the presence of
weapons inside the structure” in Derdghaiya, it added.
A union
of local governments in the area said at least three Syrians were killed in an
Israeli strike on Derdghaiya. The Lebanese health ministry gave a different
toll, saying two Syrians were killed and several others including a Lebanese
wounded.
Separately,
the health ministry specified that a Lebanese man who had succumbed to injuries
sustained in an Israeli strike “several days ago” on the southern village of
Beit Lif was a Hezbollah fighter, not a civilian as earlier reported.
Hezbollah
claimed several attacks against military positions in northern Israel on
Sunday, including at least two using attack drones.
On
Saturday, the Iran-backed group said it had launched “squadrons of
explosive-laden drones” at a north Israel army base following the killing of a
Hamas commander in the south Lebanon city of Sidon a day earlier.
The
cross-border violence since early October has killed at least 565 people in
Lebanon, most of them fighters but also including at least 116 civilians,
according to the AFP tally.
On the
Israeli side, including in the annexed Golan Heights, 22 soldiers and 26
civilians have been killed, according to army figures.
Thousands
have been displaced from both sides of the border due to the fighting.

US
orders submarine, aircraft carrier to rush to Middle East as Israel warns of
coming Iran attack
August 12,
2024
WASHINGTON:
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered a guided missile submarine to the
Middle East and is telling the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike
group to sail more quickly to the area, the Defense Department said Sunday.
Austin
issued the order after speaking with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who
told him Iran's military preparations suggest Iran is getting ready for a
large-scale attack on Israel, Axios reporter Barak Ravid said on X, citing a
source with knowledge of the call.
The
moves come as the US and other allies push for Israel and Hamas to achieve a
cease-fire agreement that could help calm soaring tensions in the region
following the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran
and a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut.
While
the USS Georgia, a nuclear-powered submarine, was already in the Mediterranean
Sea in July, according to a US military post on social media, it was a rare
move to publicly announce the deployment of a submarine.
In a
statement after Austin spoke with his Israeli counterpart, the Pentagon said
the defense chief had ordered the Abraham Lincoln strike group to accelerate
its deployment to the region.
“Secretary
Austin reiterated the United States’ commitment to take every possible step to
defend Israel and noted the strengthening of US military force posture and
capabilities throughout the Middle East in light of escalating regional
tensions,” Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, said in a statement.
Ryder said
Austin had reiterated to Gallant America's commitment “to take every possible
step to defend Israel and noted the strengthening of US military force posture
and capabilities throughout the Middle East in light of escalating regional
tensions.”
The US military
had already said it will deploy additional fighter jets and Navy warships to
the Middle East as Washington seeks to bolster Israeli defenses.
Officials
have been on the lookout for retaliatory strikes by both Iran and Hezbollah for
the killings, and the US has been beefing up its presence in the region.
The
Lincoln, which has been in the Asia Pacific, had already been ordered to the
region to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier strike group,
which is scheduled to begin heading home from the Middle East. Last week,
Austin said the Lincoln would arrive in the Central Command area by the end of
the month.
It
wasn't clear Sunday what his latest order means, or how much more quickly the
Lincoln will steam to the Middle East. The carrier has F-35 fighter jets
aboard, along with the F/A-18 fighter aircraft that are also on carriers.
Ryder
said Austin and Gallant also discussed Israel's military operations in Gaza and
the importance of mitigating civilian harm.
The call
comes a day after an Israeli airstrike hit a school-turned-shelter in Gaza
early Saturday, killing at least 80 people and wounding nearly 50 others,
Palestinian health authorities said, in one of the deadliest attacks of the
10-month Israel-Hamas war.
The US
military had already said it will deploy additional fighter jets and Navy
warships to the Middle East as Washington seeks to bolster Israeli defenses.
Ismail
Haniyeh, the political leader of Iran-backed Hamas, was assassinated in the
Iranian capital Tehran on July 31, an attack that drew threats of revenge by
Iran against Israel, which is fighting the Palestinian Islamist group in Gaza.
Iran blamed Israel for the killing. Israel has not claimed responsibility.
The
assassination and the killing of the senior military commander of the
Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah, Fuad Shukr, by Israel in a strike on
Beirut, have fueled concern the conflict in Gaza was turning into a wider
Middle East war.
Iran has
said the US bears responsibility in the assassination of Haniyeh because of its
support for Israel.
Several
US and coalition personnel were wounded in a drone attack on Friday in Syria,
in the second major attack in recent days against US forces amid soaring
tensions in the Middle East.

In
Iraq’s summer, residents of Kurdistan’s Irbil ache for water
August
12, 2024
IRBIL,
Iraq: The taps have run dry, and the wells are almost empty. In the capital of
Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region, 80-year-old Babir hasn’t bathed in weeks
and impatiently waits for trucked-in water deliveries.
“There
is nothing worse than not having water,” said Babir, who gave only his first
name, in his modest house in Irbil’s Darto suburb.
As in
several other densely populated areas of Irbil and its suburbs, Babir and his
neighbors rely on groundwater as their primary water source.
But for
years, they have dreaded summer, when relentless drought, a lack of wells and
power outages that bring pumps to a halt leave them cut off the supply of
water.
For
everything from bathing to watering plants, cooking and washing, they have been
forced to depend on trucked-in water.
Usually
“we bathe once every fortnight,” said Babir, dressed in traditional Kurdish
sarwal trousers.
From the
roof of his house, he shouted for a water truck as it drove up into the street,
then hurried downstairs to request a refill for his home.
This
time, the truck belonged to a local aid group. When such assistance is
unavailable, the retiree has to pay from his meagre pension or rely on family
for water and other essentials.
Over the
years, residents of several districts have taken to the streets many times to
demand solutions, but Babir said appeals to officials had fallen on deaf ears.
He said he was considering moving “to a place with water.”
Iraq is
known in Arabic as the Land of the Two Rivers, referring to the once mighty
Tigris and Euphrates. But the rivers’ water levels have plummeted and the UN
classifies the country as one of the most impacted by some effects of climate
change.
Authorities
blame the drought as well as dams built upstream in neighboring Turkiye and
Iran.
Irbil
relies on 1,240 wells dotted across the city alongside the Ifraz water station
that draws from the upper Zab River, which has its source in Turkiye and joins
the Tigris in Iraq.
Its
governor, Omed Khoshnaw, told reporters earlier this month that “more than 25
percent of wells have dried up this year,” adding that Irbil should rely less
on groundwater.
Amid the
crisis, the city’s local authorities say they have allocated 1.5 billion Iraqi
dinars ($1.1 million) to help solve it, including by digging new wells and
providing power via generators and the electricity grid.
Local
official Nabz Abdul Hamid said that power outages have heavily impacted pumps
for wells in residential areas.
“We have
now provided an uninterrupted electricity supply to most of the wells,” he told
AFP, adding that officials were working to fix the broader problem including by
improving the Ifraz plant supply.
In the
Darto district, one person skillfully maneuvered the aid truck’s hose as a
torrent of water gushed into a tank.
A young
girl waited to fill plastic bottles while other children joyfully splashed
water on their faces, finding relief from the relentless heat.
But when
it comes to washing, Surur Mohamad, 49, said that for anything more than basic
clothes he goes to a nearby village where they have a steady water supply.
Trucked-in
water from aid organizations “is not a solution,” he said, adding that
overcrowding has put further pressure on the water system while poor pipe
infrastructure has exacerbated the problem.
“The
government must find radical solutions as relying solely on wells” is no longer
viable, especially considering the drought, he said.
His
neighbor, Mahya Najm, said the lack of water had stopped her children and young
families from visiting her.
“We
cannot wash, cook or even receive guests,” she said.
“We are
in dire need of water. This is not a life,” she added.

Palestinian
gunmen kill Israeli in West Bank attack, Israeli military says
August
11, 2024
JERUSALEM:
An Israeli was killed and another wounded on Sunday by Palestinian gunmen who
opened fire on a main road in the occupied West Bank, Israel’s ambulance
service and military said, with the armed wing of militant faction Hamas claiming
responsibility.
The
Israeli military said it was pursuing the suspected assailants, blocking routes
and conducting searches.
Later in
the day, Hamas’ Al-Qassam Brigades said its West Bank-based fighters killed an
Israeli soldier at point-blank range near the settlement of Mehola in the
Jordan Valley and “returned to their bases safely.”
It said
the operation came in retaliation for Israel’s strike on a school where
displaced Palestinians were sheltering in Gaza City on Saturday, which the
civil defense service said had killed at least 90 people.
The
Israeli military said it had struck a Hamas and Islamic Jihad militant command
post in this attack and killed 19 militants. The Hamas and Islamic groups
rejected the Israeli military statement.
Violence
in the West Bank, already on the rise before the war in Gaza, has escalated
further, with stepped-up Israeli military raids, settler violence and
Palestinian street attacks.

How a
ceasefire in Gaza could help prevent a deadly new outbreak of polio
August
11, 2024
LONDON:
More than 1 million children in the Gaza Strip are at risk of contracting type
2 poliovirus, a highly infectious disease that can lead to paralysis and even
death, as displacement and the destruction of sanitation infrastructure leaves
the population vulnerable to disease.
The
World Health Organization has announced plans to send 1.2 million polio
vaccines to Gaza after the virus was detected in wastewater samples taken last
month from displacement camps in the northern governorates of Khan Younis and
Deir Al-Balah.
Although
no clinical cases of polio have been diagnosed so far, Hanan Balkhy, the WHO’s
regional director, warned that the virus could “spread further, including
across borders” unless agencies acted quickly to vaccinate the population.
However,
any mass polio immunization campaign in Gaza, targeting 600,000 children under
the age of 8, would face a host of challenges, chief among them the absence of
a ceasefire which would allow medics to safely access displaced communities.
“We need
a ceasefire, even a temporary ceasefire, to successfully undertake these
campaigns,” Balkhy said at a press briefing on Wednesday.
Children
under the age of 5, and especially infants, are most at risk from polio, as
many missed out on the regular vaccination campaigns that had taken place in
Gaza before the conflict began on Oct. 7.
The
virus, which spreads through contact with the feces, saliva or nasal mucus of
an infected individual, attacks nerves in the spinal cord and the brain stem,
leading to partial or total paralysis within hours.
It can
also immobilize chest muscles, causing trouble breathing, even leading to
death.
Polio
was eradicated in Europe in 2003 thanks to an effective vaccination campaign.
There have been no confirmed cases of paralysis due to polio caught in the UK
since 1984.
Wild
poliovirus cases have fallen by more than 99 percent since 1988, from an
estimated 350,000 cases in more than 125 endemic countries to six reported
cases in 2021.
Of the
three strains of wild poliovirus, type 2 was eradicated in 1999 and type 3 was
eradicated in 2020. As of 2022, endemic type 1 remained in just two countries —
Pakistan and Afghanistan.
In Gaza,
overcrowding, a lack of clean water and hygiene materials, a deteriorating
health system, and the destruction of sanitation plants have all contributed to
the reemergence of type 2, according to Hamid Jafari, the WHO’s director of
polio eradication, speaking at Wednesday’s press briefing.
The UN
estimates at least 70 percent of Gaza’s water and sanitation plants, including
wastewater treatment facilities and sewage pumping stations, have been damaged
or destroyed since the start of the conflict.
In late
July, Gaza’s health authority declared the enclave a “polio epidemic zone,”
blaming the resurgence of the virus on Israel’s bombing campaign and the
ensuing damage this had caused to the healthcare system.
The
Israeli military began its bombardment of the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the
Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel. Although the Israeli military
insists it does not target civilian infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and
utilities have suffered major damage.
The more
than 490 attacks on medical facilities and personnel, documented by the UN
during the first six months of the conflict alone, have left Gaza’s healthcare
system in tatters. Just 16 of Gaza’s 36 health facilities remain partially functioning.
Three of
these facilities are in the north, seven in Gaza City, three in Deir Al-Balah,
three in Khan Younis, and none in the southern city of Rafah, according to the
US-based nongovernmental organization Physicians for Human Rights.
Javid
Abdelmoneim, a medical team leader for Medecins Sans Frontieres, who was
working at the Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza last month, told the
organization “every day in July has been one shock after another.”
Recounting
one particularly traumatic incident, he said: “I walked in behind a curtain,
and there was a little girl alone, dying by herself. And that’s the outcome of
a collapsed health system. A little 8-year-old girl, dying alone on a trolley
in the emergency room.
“In a
functioning health system, she would have been saved.”
Despite
calls from the WHO and other aid bodies for the warring parties in Gaza to
allow “absolute freedom of movement” so that medics can roll out a vaccination
campaign, the possibility of a ceasefire appears no closer.
On
Wednesday, the Israeli military issued new evacuation orders for several parts
of northern Gaza, including Beit Hanoun, Manshiyya and Sheikh Zayed.
Avichay
Adraee, the Israeli army’s spokesperson, posted the evacuation orders on the
social media platform X. He instructed the residents of Beit Hanoun to
“relocate immediately” to Deir Al-Balah and Zawayda.
“Beit
Hanoun area is still considered a dangerous combat zone,” he added.
Despite
assurances that these areas would be treated as safe zones in which civilians
could shelter, both Deir Al-Balah and Zawayda have come under regular Israeli
attack in recent months.
The UN
reported that while nowhere in Gaza is safe, 86 percent of the besieged
Palestinian enclave is under Israeli evacuation orders. About 1.9 million of Gaza’s
2.1 million population have been displaced multiple times since Oct. 7.
“Nowhere
is safe. Everywhere is a potential killing zone,” UN Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres said at the opening of the UNRWA Pledging Conference on July 12.
The
continuous movement of families in Gaza has made it difficult for aid agencies,
which are already short of funds and struggling to reach affected populations,
to locate and identify unvaccinated children.
The
WHO’s polio specialist Jafari warned that the virus could have been circulating
in Gaza since September, as the enclave offered “ideal conditions” for its
transmission.
Before
Oct. 7, polio vaccine coverage in the Occupied Palestinian Territories was
estimated at 89 percent, according to the WHO.
Even if
the planned 1.2 million vaccines are successfully brought into Gaza, it will be
a “huge logistical challenge” to ensure their successful deployment, WHO
official Andrea King told the BBC.
The
vaccines must be stored within a limited temperature range from the moment they
are manufactured until they are administered. Bringing these chilled vaccines
into Gaza and keeping them at the required temperature would be a difficult
undertaking at the best of times.
The
WHO’s Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that a
ceasefire or at least a few days of calm was essential to protect Gaza’s
children.
As of
July 7, the WHO has recorded a surge in infectious diseases, including 1
million cases of acute respiratory infections, 577,000 of acute watery diarrhea,
107,000 of acute jaundice syndrome, and 12,000 of bloody diarrhea.
It says
this is primarily due to a lack of clean drinking water and the destruction of
a critical water facility in Rafah, southern Gaza.

Saudi
calligraffiti artist rewrites tradition using bold strokes
August
11, 2024
RIYADH:
Saudi artist Ahmed Al-Sulaimani is redefining the boundaries of traditional art
forms by blending Arabic calligraphy and graffiti-inspired techniques.
The
Riyadh-based artist’s journey into the realm of calligraffiti began during an Arabic
calligraphy course in school where he discovered his passion for the intricate
art.
Inspired
by the expressive potential of the written word, Al-Sulaimani began
experimenting, blending this ancient art form with bold and dynamic graffiti.
“Calligraffiti
is a fusion of Arabic calligraphy and graffiti art,” Al-Sulaimani told Arab
News. “While graffiti typically uses the English language and letters,
calligraffiti combines Arabic calligraphy with graffiti techniques. I form
Arabic letters using graffiti-inspired styles and methods.”
This
approach has not only captured the attention of art enthusiasts but has also
opened doors to remarkable opportunities, including a mural collaboration with
Jeddah Municipality that marked his first foray into large-scale public art.
“This
project allowed me to showcase my skills in integrating Arabic calligraphy into
large-scale murals,” he said. “It caught the attention of many and inspired me
to continue exploring the use of Arabic calligraphy in public art.”
Following
that project, the ministry selected Al-Sulaimani to design and produce
large-scale murals in 10 cities across the Kingdom, including on bridges,
towers, and public spaces.
The
pinnacle of his achievements, however, came with the opportunity to design
Arabic signage for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Tasked with creating
towering structures featuring Qur’anic phrases, Al-Sulaimani’s work brought the
beauty of the Arabic language to the global stage.
“The
towers, some reaching 40 meters in height, featured Qur’anic phrases that
emphasized the diversity of the human experience,” he added.
Beyond
his mural work, Al-Sulaimani has also shared his expertise with international
audiences. He has facilitated workshops teaching Arabic calligraphy to Harvard
students visiting Saudi Arabia, introducing the art form to those unfamiliar
with the Arabic language.
“I aim
to bring this unique art form to the forefront and showcase the richness and
versatility of the Arabic language,” he noted.
He is
also working on launching his own Arabic font that will “combine elements from
various calligraphic styles” and reflect “a distinct Saudi identity.”
The
artist said: “This project is a reflection of my desire to create a font that
is uniquely representative of the Saudi culture. The font will be out by the
end of this year and will be used digitally as well.”
Al-Sulaimani
noted that his works are more than just an artistic endeavor; they are a way to
share the beauty and depth of Islamic culture with the world. His calligraffiti
is infused with Qur’anic verses and Islamic themes that encourage viewers to
explore the meaning behind the words.
Despite
the challenges he has faced, including the reluctance of established artists to
mentor beginners and misconceptions about the legitimacy of his approach,
Al-Sulaimani remains undeterred. He has found creative ways to overcome these
obstacles, including inventing his own tools and techniques.
With
unwavering dedication and innovative spirit, the Saudi artist is shining a
bright light on the rich cultural heritage of the Kingdom and leaving a
meaningful mark on the world of contemporary art.

Najran’s
leather artisans preserve cultural heritage
August
11, 2024
RIYADH:
In the heart of Saudi Arabia’s Najran region, the ancient art of leather
crafting, a symbol of local cultural heritage, is experiencing a renaissance.
Each
piece of leather tells a unique story of art and industry, passed down through
generations of Saudi artisans.
This
traditional industry is finding new life under Saudi Vision 2030, contributing
to the development of manufacturing techniques and product diversification, the
Saudi Press Agency reported.
Leather
products include footwear, bags, accessories, clothing, furniture and car
accessories. These locally made items, known for their durability, quality and
Saudi aesthetics, are popular both within the region and beyond.
In an
interview with the SPA, Salem bin Ahmed, a leather craftsman, outlined the
meticulous process of transforming animal hides from cattle, camels, sheep and
goats into durable, flexible leather. The process involves cleaning and hair
removal, pickling, tanning, drying and stretching, and finally, cutting, he
said.
Ahmed
added that several traditional leather products remain in use today, such as
the mezab, a shoulder carry for infants; masbat, a leather belt worn around the
waist; and zamalah, a large container for storing personal items.
Modern
products like fashionable bags and accessories are now part of the leather repertoire,
blending tradition with contemporary design.
Maha
Al-Saeed, head of the Lar Association for Productive Families in Najran, told
the SPA that traditional industries in Najran represent promising opportunities
for community members. “This aligns with the country’s direction to promote
traditional industries as national cultural heritage,” she said.
The
Ministry of Culture supports artisans through specialized training programs and
initiatives, teaching necessary skills for leather-making and other traditional
crafts, with financial support provided in collaboration with the Social
Development Bank.
Al-Saeed
added that earlier this year, the association conducted a training program on
leather manufacturing.
Trainees
learned about key leather types, including cattle and goat hides, and acquired
basic skills in leather crafting such as proper cutting, sewing, tailoring and
embossing techniques.
The
program also covered artistic skills like burning and drawing on leather to
create attractive products, incorporating Najran’s heritage by adding
engravings, drawings, and depictions of historical and heritage sites on
leather pieces.

Rock
arches in Tabuk showcase geological wonders
August
11, 2024
RIYADH:
Rock arches stand out as exceptional geological and natural marvels,
captivating explorers and prompting contemplation on the temporal and spatial
dimensions of various landscapes.
Within
the Hisma Desert, which is located in the western part of the Tabuk region,
numerous rock arches adorn both the core and periphery of the desert, the Saudi
Press Agency has reported.
These
structures attract tourists and spark curiosity with their circular shapes and
intricate patterns that become more apparent upon closer inspection.
Scientific
studies attribute the formation of these arches to the combined effect of wind
and the underlying geological composition. The wind, as a primary agent,
propels sand particles along the incline of the fossilized terrain, leading to
their accumulation on the leeward side.
This
cyclical process molds the distinctive rock arches over time, with factors like
wind velocity, sediment availability, and geological composition influencing
their size, configuration, and evolution.
These
arches are typically found in sandy regions with stable rock foundations. They
evolve due to wind and erosion, with local conditions enhancing their beauty.
The Hisma
Desert’s rock arches are a stunning blend of nature’s artistry and
environmental processes.

US-occupied
military base in Syria’s Hasakah targeted in kamikaze drone attack
10
August 2024
An
illegal military facility housing US occupation forces in Syria’s northeastern
province of Hasakah has come under a drone attack from nearby areas.
Lebanon’s
al-Mayadeen television, citing local sources, reported that several
explosions were heard inside the US-controlled Kharab al-Jir Air Base early on
Saturday after an explosive-laden
unmanned aerial vehicle struck the site.
There
were no immediate reports about possible casualties or the extent of damage at
the installation.
The
attack comes amid an escalation in clashes between Arab tribes and US-backed
Kurdish separatist forces in eastern Syria in recent days.
Residents,
marginalized by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) which controls the
region's oil resources, have attacked the positions of the Kurdish separatists.
Nomadic
forces in eastern Dayr al-Zawr have successfully pushed back Kurdish separatist
militants and advanced near the al-Omar oil field, prompting a response from US
forces.
US
warplanes have reportedly bombarded nearby areas to support the Kurdish
militants. The nomadic forces are demanding the right to self-determination and
the withdrawal of both US occupation forces and Kurdish separatists from Dayr
al-Zawr.

Daesh
attack in east DR Congo kills five
August
12, 2024
KINSHASA:
The Daesh group has claimed responsibility for an attack in eastern DR Congo
that killed five people, according to a US-based intelligence group.
The SITE
group, which specializes in monitoring radical terrorist groups, said on
Saturday the Daesh Central Africa Province (ISCAP) had claimed responsibility
for the attack in the Tshopo province.
“The
Daesh stated that fighters shot at a militia post in a village in Tshopo,
killing three personnel, then turned their guns on Christians inside the
village,” the group said in a statement.
The
statement added that the group had also set fire to more than 50 houses.
SITE
also said in its statement that the ISCAP has “not previously carried out
operations” in the Tshopo area.
The Daesh
group portrays the ADF — Allied Democratic Forces — as its central African
branch.
The ADF
pledged allegiance in 2019 to the Daesh which has claimed responsibility for a
number of ADF attacks and describes the ADF as its regional affiliate.
The
group, originally made up of mainly Muslim Ugandan rebels, has established a
presence over the past three decades in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo,
killing thousands of civilians.
Since
the end of 2021, the Congolese and Ugandan armies have been conducting joint
operations against the ADF in North Kivu and the neighboring province of Ituri,
but have so far failed to stop the deadly attacks on civilians.
The
Democratic Republic of Congo is embroiled in several conflicts, particularly in
the east where dozens of armed groups from both the DRC and neighboring
countries have been operating for 30 years.

Several
US forces suffered injuries in attack on Syria base: Report
11
August 2024
An
unknown US official has revealed that several American and coalition forces
were wounded in a drone attack on their base in Syria on Friday, the third
major attack against the US occupation troops in recent days.
None of
the injuries were serious but some personnel were also being examined for
“traumatic brain injuries,” the unnamed official was quoted as saying by
Reuters on Saturday.
Several
troops were moved to a different location for further evaluation, the official
added.
Reuters
also cited the US military as saying that assessments showed no casualties in
the drone attack but a more in-depth review “found that some personnel had
minor injuries including smoke inhalation and moved some to a different
location.”
No
groups or individuals have so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
Lebanon’s
al-Mayadeen television reported on Saturday that US occupation forces in
Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah had come under a drone attack from
nearby areas.
The
report said several
explosions were heard inside the US-controlled Kharab al-Jir Air Base after an
explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicle struck the site.
In
another attack on Monday, a rocket strike wounded five US personnel at Ain
al-Asad airbase in Iraq’s western province of Anbar.
The
Iraqi resistance forces have conducted dozens of strikes on the US-run military
installations in both Iraq and Syria amid growing anti-US sentiments in the
region over Washington’s support for Israel’s genocidal war against Gaza, which
has so far killed nearly 40,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
There
are nearly 2,500 American troops in Iraq and some 900 in Syria as part of, what
Washington claims to be, a fighting force against Daesh.
The US
has maintained its presence, although, the Arab countries and their allies
defeated the Takfiri terrorist group in late 2017.
In 2020,
the Iraqi parliament voted for the expulsion of US forces.
The vote
came after Iran’s top anti-terror commander martyr General Qassem Soleimani and
deputy PMU commander Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis had been assassinated in a cowardly
drone strike ordered by then US president Donald Trump outside of the Baghdad
airport.
On
January 8, 2020, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) targeted the
US-run Ain al-Asad air base in Iraq after launching a wave of attacks to
retaliate the assassination of the two top anti-terror commanders.
According
to the Pentagon, more than 100 American forces suffered “traumatic brain injuries”
during the counterstrike on the base.
The
IRGC, however, said Washington used the term to mask the number of Americans
who perished during the reprisal.

Federal
Government Denies Approving Competition On Same Sex Marriage
12
August 2024
The
federal government has denied approving a letter circulating on social media
that claims it has sanctioned a National Schools Competition and debate for
secondary schools in the country on the topic “Same-Sex Marriage Should Be
Legalised in Nigeria.”
The
alleged debate has sparked significant backlash on social media, with a group
launching a campaign urging the public to boycott the competition.
Critics
of the event have accused it of being a subtle attempt to normalize LGBTQ
ideals in Nigeria.
The
letter, purportedly sent to commissioners of education across various states,
was alleged to have originated from the Federal Ministry of Education.
However,
the ministry has categorically denied any involvement in the supposed
competition.
In an
official response, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Dr.
Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, refuted the claim.
His
letter was addressed to the Commissioner of Education, Science, and Technology
of Kogi State, who had reached out to the ministry after reportedly receiving a
copy of the controversial letter.
Dr.
Sani-Gwarzo made it clear that the ministry had not authorized or endorsed any
debate or competition on the topic of same-sex marriage.
He
emphasized that the letter in circulation is not from the ministry and should
be disregarded.
The
letter, which was dated 9th August 2024, read, “It has come to the attention of
the Federal Ministry of Education that a letter allegedly from the Federal
Ministry Education (FME) has been circulated to state commissioners of
education inviting schools to participate in a national schools competition and
debate organised by Creative Africa Initiative that proposes the legalisation
of same-sex marriage in Nigeria.
“This
document is fraudulent and fake, as it didn’t emanate from the FME. It also
contradicts both the values upheld by Nigerians and the stance of the Nigerian
government and the FME.
“The
Nigerian government has consistently maintained a strong stance against the
legalisation of same-sex marriage, as evidenced by the Same-Sex Marriage
Prohibition Act of 2014. The purported letter is fundamentally at odds with the
cultural, religious, and societal values that form the foundation of Nigerian
society.”
Sani-Gwarzo
said the letter was an attempt to spread misinformation and cause confusion
among the public, especially in an era where fake news can easily go viral
“In
conclusion, the letter purportedly from the Federal Ministry of Education on
the issue of same-sex marriage legalisation in Nigeria is a scam. The FME
therefore advises the general public to discountenance the letter and its
planned programme. The matter has already been reported to the security
agencies to do the needful,” he said.

‘The
Eight Years Of Buhari Was Just A Waste For The North And The Country’ –
Shettima
11
August 2024
The
National President of the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF), Yerima
Shettima, has described the eight years in office by former President Muhammadu
Buhari as a waste for the northern region and the entire country.
He
submitted that the North has been neglected for so long by the previous leaders
and the people of the region have been pushed to the wall.
Shetimma
made the submission in an interview with Vanguard which was published on
Sunday.
He
described the eight years of the Buhari government as a waste, adding that the
decision of the northern people to join the recent #EndBadGovernance protest
provoked the people and if the leaders do not do the needful, worse protests
may happen in the future which will consume everybody.
According
to him, President Bola Tinubu only inherited the challenges in the country and
the frustrations of the people.
“It is a
clear indication that, over time, the North has been neglected by its previous
leaders, who didn’t do the needful. They left the people frustrated. Already,
there is poverty and we have said it countless times that the governors are
supposed to be doing better than they are doing. We were privileged to be at
the helm of affairs in this country, but our leaders have not done enough.
“They
planted what we are reaping today. The eight years of Buhari was just a waste
for the region and the country. Tinubu inherited the problem. And this is the
consequence of the wasteful leadership of the Buhari era. That is what provoked
our people to be deeply involved in the demonstrations.
“If the
leaders cannot do the needful, they will see the worst protests shortly where
everybody will be consumed,” Shettima said.
The AYCF
president, during the interview, also debunked reports in certain quarters that
the reason for anger in the North is because appointments by the government do
not favour the region.
He said
while the north is suffering injustice from the appointments by the Tinubu
government, the problems in the region are more than the issue of appointments.
He said:
“It is not about appointments. It is about poverty and hunger in the land
compared to the South. This is in addition to the recent policies by (the
Tinubu) government.
“Even
when the government tried to provide succour, some people among the northern
elites ensured it didn’t get to the people. Only recently, we learnt that money
was given to the governors by the Federal Government to give to the people, but
nothing was disbursed until the Federal Government opened up.
“There
should be synergy between the Federal Government and states. And if anything
for the people comes to the state, it must get to the people. This is the
implication of not allowing the people to feel the impact of any government at
any level and not the appointments.
“Of
course, the appointments do not do justice to the North, and we have raised the
issue. What baffles some of us is that most of the appointments are given to
people who are not in touch with the people. They give appointments to the
elites, who have no track record of having anything to do with the masses. They
never believed in the masses and had nothing to do with them.
“How do
you expect the masses to feel the impact when such people are given
appointments? The government has to look inward. There are people who, if you
want to give appointments, you will look at their track record – they should be
people who live with the masses.
“You
don’t have to give appointments to people who are far from the masses. They
shouldn’t be people who have nothing to do with the people and expect
governance to get to the people. This is part of the mistakes this
administration is making.
“The
same thing happened during the administration of Buhari. The same mistake is
happening again. Can people endure this hunger in the next three years? It is
impossible. That is why we have seen this level of reaction in the North.”

Man DSS
Arrested For Producing Russian Flag Never Handled A Sewing Machine – Family
11
August 2024
The
family of one of the tailors accused of mass-production of the Russian flag in
Kano, Ahmad Yusuf Muhammad, has said Muhammad was not involved in the act he
was arrested over.
Naija
News recalls that the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested some tailors
suspected to be mass-producing the Russian flag in Kano State.
The
agency posted on its X handle, that the “Service has apprehended some tailors
in Kano State responsible for making Russian flags being distributed in the
area. Some of their sponsors have also been picked. An investigation is
ongoing.”
However,
Ahmad’s brother, Nasiru Yusuf Muhammad, in a chat with Daily Trust, said his
brother was never a tailor and has never handled a sewing machine.
He said,
“He is my biological brother, he was arrested because they said he was the one
sewing the Russian flag. I want to clarify that he was never a tailor, he had
never been and doesn’t even know how to handle a sewing machine.
“He just
became a victim because he was never arrested by any security operative, we
(the family) are suspecting because of trauma or being frightened he has said
something that implicates himself.
“He is a
used water sachet recycling dealer, we are all into it, he directly works under
me, that’s our business. He was never a tailor. Even the sewing machine that
was said to be his was not his own and was not picked in our house. It was in a
neighbour’s house and the owner has since run away.
“The
flag was not even in his custody. Ahmad had not participated in protest and did
not raise any flag. We had cautioned him and he listened.”
He,
therefore, called on the security agencies and concerned authorities to
investigate the case carefully and do justice to everyone.
“We are
appealing to the concerned authorities to please look critically into this
issue and release him. He was not a tailor and has not committed the offense he
is being held for,” he said.

DR
Congo's government releases 527 prisoners citing overcrowding
The
Minister of Justice of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Constant
Mutamba, announced on Saturday, August 10, 2024, the release of nearly 527
prisoners from the central prison of Makala in Kinshasa.
During
this event, he also delivered 2,000 mattresses to the inmates out of a total of
7,000 ordered, aiming to improve their detention conditions.
"A
state governed by the rule of law means that everyone must be subject to the
law. Your place is in your home where you will spend the night tonight. You
must return to your homes. In this regard, I inform you that next Saturday, we
will continue with the release of some prisoners who have been unjustly
detained," stated Constant Mutamba.
He
reminded the public that he had promised to improve the detention conditions of
prisoners, in line with instructions from the Head of State.
"This
is what is being done. I also guaranteed that no prisoner would sleep on the
floor anymore. Based on the instructions given to the director of the central
prison of Makala, we have already provided the prison with the first batch of
mattresses. The beds are currently being manufactured, and starting next week,
no prisoner will have to sleep on the floor. Meanwhile, the prison's health
center is undergoing rehabilitation, and several pavilions are also being
renovated. Our ambition is first to reduce overcrowding in the prison and then
to rehabilitate it thoroughly," he added.
The
Minister also announced the construction of a new prison in Maluku, on a site
he had recently visited.
In July,
the Congo's government had stated that at least 7,000 inmates were to be
granted conditional release from the Makala Central Prison in a bid to ease
overcrowding at the facility.
Located
in Kinshasa, it is the country’s largest jail, built for 1,500 inmates in 1957,
but now holding more than 15,000 people, including children and women.
Conditions
are notoriously bad at the prison with inmates crammed into cells, eating
poorly, and some suffering from water and respiratory diseases.

Paul
Kagame's inauguration: Renewing his oath of loyalty as Rwanda's leader
As Paul
Kagame embarks on another term, Rwanda stands at a crossroads. While his
supporters tout the country's development under his leadership, the
international community remains watchful of the growing concerns regarding
human rights and the concentration of power in the hands of one man.
The ceremony
in Kigali was not just a formality; it was a powerful reminder of Kagame’s
enduring influence and the complex legacy he continues to build in Rwanda.
Kagame,
recently re-elected as Rwanda's president, was inaugurated on Sunday in a grand
ceremony held in the capital, Kigali. The 66-year-old leader, who has been at
the helm since the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide in 1994, took the oath of
office, pledging his unwavering loyalty to the Republic of Rwanda. "I,
Kagame Paul, do solemnly swear to Rwanda that I will remain loyal to the
Republic of Rwanda, observe and defend the Constitution and other laws
diligently, and fulfill the responsibility entrusted to me," he declared,
reaffirming his commitment to lead the nation.
Kagame’s
inauguration marks the beginning of yet another term in office, following an
election in which he ran virtually unopposed. Despite widespread criticism from
various international observers and human rights organizations, Kagame's grip
on power remains strong. His critics, including potential rivals, were largely
sidelined, with two of his strongest opponents being barred from running for
high office.
Kagame
first rose to prominence as the leader of the rebel forces that ended the
genocide in 1994, which claimed the lives of nearly 800,000 Rwandans. Since
then, he has served as the de facto leader of Rwanda, officially assuming the
presidency in 2000. Under his leadership, Rwanda has experienced significant
economic growth and stability, earning praise from some for its progress.
In 2015,
a referendum allowed Rwandans to vote on lifting the two-term limit for
presidents. The result overwhelmingly favored the change, paving the way for
Kagame to extend his presidency potentially until 2034. This move has sparked
debate about the future of democracy in Rwanda, with many questioning the
fairness of the referendum and the broader implications for governance in the
country.

Bandits
Kill Soldiers In Sokoto, Set Patrol Vans On Fire
11
August 2024
Four
soldiers were killed and two others injured in a brutal ambush by bandits in Gudu
Local Government Area of Sokoto State over the weekend.
The
attack, which occurred along the Kukurau-Bangi road, also saw the assailants
burning down two patrol vehicles belonging to the soldiers.
According
to Daily Trust, the incident was confirmed by Yahya Gudu, the member
representing Gudu at the Sokoto State House of Assembly.
“Yes, it
is true. Some gunmen ambushed soldiers on patrol along Kukurau-Bangi road on
Saturday and killed four of them while two others were injured. They also burnt
down their patrol vehicles,” Gudu stated.
Describing
the attack as disheartening, Gudu noted that he had informed Governor Ahmed
Aliyu about the incident, prompting the deployment of reinforcements to the
area.
A
resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, reported seeing the bandits
passing through the area on 20 motorcycles.
He said,
“Each motorcycle was carrying two well armed bandits. They didn’t touch or
kidnap anybody in our community. They just passed and the next thing we heard
were sounds of gunshots.
“It was
later that, we discovered they laid an ambush for the security operatives
patrolling the area and killed four of them. Their bodies were later recovered
by their colleagues and carried away.
“About a
week ago, the bandits while pursuing vigilantes, killed seven persons in our
community. They are still in that bush. There is a stream where they met and
discussed everyday. We used to tell security operatives about their presence
but they have not being responsive. May be because the bandits are using more
sophisticated weapons.”

Boko
Haram Kills 2, Abducts 7 In Borno
12 Aug
2024
Daily
Trust had reported that insurgents had targeted military checkpoints on the
highway and set ablaze commercial vehicles worth hundreds of millions of naira
along the same road.
These
attacks have led to significant losses for traders and commercial vehicle
owners, as the insurgents frequently loot goods from vehicles travelling along
the route.
Ali
Abubakar, a commercial driver, described how the deteriorating condition of the
road had exacerbated the situation, making it easier for the insurgents to
ambush vehicles.
He
recounted an attack last Thursday between Mafa and Dikwa Road where two people
were killed and their vehicles burnt after being looted.
A member
of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Mafa confirmed that seven people,
including the driver of a Desert Land Rover, were abducted by insurgents on
Friday between Ajiri and Dikwa.
He said
their whereabouts remained unknown, but efforts were ongoing to rescue them.
Attempts to reach the State Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Kenneth
Daso, for comment, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Malaysia
must remain vigilant in security matters - Ahmad Zahid
11-08-
2024
MELAKA:
The uncertain global security threat landscape demands that Malaysia remains
vigilant, even though it is ranked as the 10th safest country according to the
recent Global Peace Index (GPI), said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad
Zahid Hamidi.
He said
that Malaysia needs to be cautious of both internal and external threats,
including ‘lone wolf’ terrorism and radicalisation through social media and
extremist propaganda that can influence individuals to engage in terrorist
activities.
He said
that through the National Security Policy 2021-2025, the concept of
Comprehensive Security (COMSEC) introduced must be continuously implemented
through multi-sectoral cooperation requiring integration in policy, strategy,
operational actions, and resource management.
“COMSEC
is seen as the most appropriate approach as it encompasses various aspects and
should be the cornerstone of the national security strategy, allowing shared
responsibility for safeguarding the country’s security in a proactive manner,“
he said.
He said
this when officiating the closing ceremony of the Comprehensive Security (EX
COMSEC) 2024 training exercise at Melaka Energy Park, Sungai Udang, today,
which was also attended by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh,
Chief of Defence Forces General Tan Sri Mohammad Ab Rahman, and
Director-General of National Security Datuk Raja Nushirwan Zainal Abidin.
The
Minister of Rural and Regional Development said that in addressing the complex
and unpredictable threats, the six pillars of Malaysia MADANI need to be
highlighted in policy formation.
Ahmad
Zahid underscored that exercises such as EX COMSEC can provide a platform to
test and assess capabilities and enhance preparedness according to each
agency’s emergency response plan.
He also
noted that it can help identify weaknesses and gaps among ministries, agencies,
the private sector, and communities in standard operating procedures (SOPs) and
Emergency Response Plans (ERP).
“I want
to emphasise that such training exercises are not only crucial for protecting
the nation but also for ensuring the safety of individuals and communities as a
whole, and must continue to be implemented.
“Therefore,
let us seize this opportunity to learn, practice, and improve our preparedness.
With cooperation and collective effort, we can ensure that comprehensive
security objectives are achieved and we are ready to face any emerging security
challenges and threats,“ he said.
EX
COMSEC 2024 involved 33 agencies with 1,700 participants, including the Royal
Malaysia Police, Malaysian Armed Forces, Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department,
and the Office of the Chief Government Security Officer of Malaysia.
EX
COMSEC 2024 is a continuation of the 2023 programme, shifting from Table Top
Exercises (TTX) to Field Training Exercises involving the deployment of
security assets in the field over two days starting yesterday.

Jokowi
Defends Capital Relocation in Historic Cabinet Meeting
August
12, 2024
Jakarta.
President Joko “Jokowi” defended his decision to build an entirely new capital
during a historic cabinet meeting on Monday, saying that the move could spread
economic activities from Java.
For the
first time in history, the government held a cabinet meeting at the new capital
Nusantara, locally known as Ibu Kota Negara or IKN. As Jokowi and his ministers
gathered indoors at the Garuda Palace to discuss strategic matters, many of the
city’s projects outside were still under construction.
Jokowi
started the cabinet meeting by saying that not many countries could build a
city from scratch. Indonesia is trying to move its capital from the crowded
Jakarta to Nusantara. Jokowi is hoping that this capital relocation can help
spur inclusive growth in the archipelagic Indonesia. Economic activities have
been heavily concentrated on Java island, and Jokowi wants this to change.
“I’m
pretty sure the [new capital Nusantara] can drive economic growth for East
Kalimantan, specifically Balikpapan and the regency of North Penajam Paser,”
Jokowi told his ministers.
“The
reason behind this capital relocation is because we want equitable economic
development. The Java island makes up 58 percent of our national gross domestic
product [GDP], and that is why we want regions outside Java to also see
economic activities,” Jokowi said.
Java has
also become way too populated.
Indonesia
is home to 270 million people, according to the 2020 national census by the
Central Statistics Agency (BPS). There are almost 48.3 million people currently
living in West Java, whereas the eastern part of the island boasts around 40.7
million in population size. Jakarta, which lies on the northwest coast of Java,
has 10.6 million people, while the population in Banten reaches 11.9 million.
Central Java has 36.5 million residents. Yogyakarta -- a special region also
located in Java -- has almost 3.7 million people.
“As many
as 56 percent of our population live in Java island, so that’s something we
factor in when moving the capital. … And we know how Jakarta has become
overcrowded,” Jokowi said.
Early
government estimates reported that Indonesia would need $33 billion to build
Nusantara, but the government is only planning to pay for 20 percent of the
total costs. Jokowi wants investors to cover the rest of the funding under a
public-private partnership scheme. According to Jokowi, Nusantara has garnered
investments worth a total of Rp 56.2 trillion (around $3.5 billion) to date.
