Overnight Vandalism: Street Signs of Islamic Rulers Defaced and Renamed inin Delhi

July 20, 2024

Several street signs across Delhi were defaced and replaced with new posters bearing different names late at night on Friday. The incidents occurred on roads named after prominent Islamic rulers, which were vandalized and subsequently renamed with posters bearing names of historical and cultural figures from Indian history.

One of the affected streets, Tughlaq Road, saw its sign altered with a poster that read “Maharana Pratap Marg.” Similarly, Shahjahan Road’s sign was covered with a poster renaming it “Chandrasekhar Azad Marg.” The sign on Humayun Road was not only blackened with spray paint but also renamed “Parshuram Marg.” Akbar Road’s sign met a similar fate, being defaced and replaced with a poster reading “Bhimrao Ambedkar Marg.”

Authorities discovered the defacement early this morning and have since launched an investigation to identify those responsible for these acts of vandalism. Local officials are working to restore the original signs and remove the unauthorized posters. The police have increased patrolling in these areas to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of public property.

Top UN court says Israel’s presence in occupied Palestinian territories is illegal and should end

July 19, 2024

Magistrates are seen at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) as part of South Africa's request on a Gaza ceasefire in The Hague, on May 24, 2024. (AFP)

------------

THE HAGUE, Netherlands: The top UN court said Friday that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is “unlawful” and called on it to end and for settlement construction to stop immediately, issuing an unprecedented, sweeping condemnation of Israel’s rule over the lands it captured 57 years ago.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly denounced the nonbinding opinion issued by the 15-judge panel of the International Court of Justice, saying the territories are part of the Jewish people’s historic “homeland.” But the resounding breadth of the decision could impact international opinion and fuel moves for unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state.

The judges pointed to a wide list of policies, including the building and expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, use of the area’s natural resources, the annexation and imposition of permanent control over lands and discriminatory policies against Palestinians, all of which it said violated international law.

The court said Israel had no right to sovereignty in the territories, was violating international laws against acquiring territory by force and was impeding Palestinians’ right to self-determination. It said other nations were obliged not to “render aid or assistance in maintaining” Israel’s presence in the territories. It said Israel must end settlement construction immediately and that existing settlements must be removed, according to a summary of the more than 80-page opinion read out by court President Nawaf Salam.

Israel’s “abuse of its status as the occupying power” renders its “presence in the occupied Palestinian territory unlawful,” the court said, saying its presence must be ended as “rapidly as possible.”

The court’s opinion, sought by the UN General Assembly after a Palestinian request, came against the backdrop of Israel’s devastating military assault on Gaza, which was triggered by the Hamas-led attacks in southern Israel on Oct. 7. In a separate case, the International Court of Justice is considering a South African claim that Israel’s campaign in Gaza amounts to genocide, a claim that Israel vehemently denies.

The court said the General Assembly and Security Council — where staunch Israeli ally the United States holds a veto — should consider “the precise modalities” to end Israel’s presence in the territories.

Israel, which normally considers the United Nations and international tribunals as unfair and biased, didn’t send a legal team to the hearings. Instead, it submitted written comments, saying that the questions put to the court are prejudiced and fail to address Israeli security concerns. Israeli officials have said the court’s intervention could undermine the peace process, which has been stagnant for more than a decade.

“The Jewish people are not conquerors in their own land — not in our eternal capital Jerusalem and not in the land of our ancestors in Judea and Samaria,” Netanyahu said in a statement issued by his office, using the biblical terms for the West Bank. “No false decision in The Hague will distort this historical truth and likewise the legality of Israeli settlement in all the territories of our homeland cannot be contested.”

Speaking outside the court, Riad Malki, an adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, called the opinion “a watershed moment for Palestine, for justice and for international law.”

He said other nations must now “uphold the clear obligations” outlined by the court. “No actions of any kind ... to support Israel’s illegal occupation.”

Hamas welcomed the court’s decision and said in a statement that “serious steps on the ground” need to be taken in response.

Israel captured the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians seek all three areas for an independent state.

Israel considers the West Bank to be disputed territory, whose future should be decided in negotiations, while it has moved populations there in settlements to solidify its hold. It has annexed east Jerusalem in a move that isn’t internationally recognized, while it withdrew from Gaza in 2005 but maintained a blockade of the territory after Hamas took power in 2007. The international community generally considers all three areas to be occupied territory.

The court’s decision strikes at the heart of the ambiguity of Israel’s administration of the territories. Israel hasn’t annexed the West Bank — though settler groups have pressed it to do so — but it calls it part of its homeland and has effectively treated it as an extension of the nation. Along with the settlements, it has appropriated large swaths of the territory as “state lands.” At the same time, Netanyahu’s government has repeatedly rejected the creation of any Palestinian state. Abbas’ Palestinian Authority has been restricted to control over divided enclaves scattered around the West Bank.

The Palestinians presented arguments at hearings in February, along with 49 other nations and three international organizations. In the hearings, Malki accused Israel of apartheid and urged the United Nations’ top court to declare that Israel’s occupation of lands sought by the Palestinians is illegal and must end immediately and unconditionally for any hope for a two-state future to survive.

Erwin van Veen, a senior research fellow at the Clingendael think tank in The Hague, said before the decision that a ruling that Israel’s policies breach international law would “isolate Israel further internationally, at least from a legal point of view.”

He said such a ruling would remove “any kind of legal, political, philosophical underpinning of the Israeli expansion project.” It could also increase the number of countries that recognize a Palestinian state, in particular in the Western world, following the recent example of Spain and Norway and Ireland, he said.

It’s not the first time the ICJ has been asked to give its legal opinion on Israeli policies. Two decades ago, the court ruled that Israel’s West Bank separation barrier was “contrary to international law.” Israel boycotted those proceedings, saying they were politically motivated.

Israel says the barrier is a security measure. Palestinians say the structure amounts to a massive land grab, because it frequently dips into the West Bank.

The court said that Israel’s construction of settlements in the West Bank violated international laws prohibiting countries from moving their population into territories they occupy.

Israel has built well over 100 settlements, according to the anti-settlement monitoring group Peace Now. The West Bank settler population has grown by more than 15 percent in the past five years to more than 500,000 Israelis, according to a pro-settler group. Their residents are Israeli citizens governed by domestic law and served by government ministries, services, banks and other businesses — effectively integrating them into Israel.

Israel also has annexed east Jerusalem and considers the entire city to be its capital. An additional 200,000 Israelis live in settlements built in east Jerusalem that Israel considers to be neighborhoods of its capital. Palestinian residents of the city face systematic discrimination, making it difficult for them to build new homes or expand existing ones.

The international community considers all settlements to be illegal or obstacles to peace since they are built on lands sought by the Palestinians for their state.

Netanyahu’s hard-line government is dominated by settlers and their political supporters. Netanyahu has given his finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, a former settler leader, unprecedented authority over settlement policy. Smotrich has used this position to cement Israel’s control over the West Bank by pushing forward plans to build more settlement homes and to legalize outposts.

Saudi Arabia, Muslim World LeagueWelcome ICJ Ruling On Israeli Settlements InPalestinian Territories

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has welcomed a ruling by UN’s top court that Israel’s settlement policy on Palestinian territory breaks international law.

The Saudi foreign ministry said in a statement that the Kingdom welcomed the advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice and called for practical steps to reach a just solution to the Palestinian cause.

The World Court issued the judgment, which is non-binding, on Friday.

In a separate statement, the Saudi-based Muslim World League described the ICJ ruling as "a positive step towards the human and legal right of the Palestinian people to reach a just and comprehensive solution to their cause."

MWL Secretary-General Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, who is also chairman of the Association of Muslim Scholars, said the decision, although non-binding, ensures that Palestinians "obtain their legitimate rights to self-determination and establishing their independent state in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant international legitimacy resolutions."

The court panel found “the transfer by Israel of settlers to the West Bank and Jerusalem as well as Israel’s maintenance of their presence, is contrary to article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention.”

The ruling comes against the backdrop of Israel’s devastating bombardment on Gaza, following the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas militants on Israeli settlements adjacent to the Palestinian enclave.

Israel captured the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem in 1967, but Palestinians consider the areas as integral part of a future independent state.

The Saudi Cabinet on Tuesday condemned the “continued genocidal massacres” against the Palestinian people amid Israel’s battle with Hamas in Gaza.

The Kingdom wants an independent state for the Palestinian people, encompassing the 1967 borders.

The US and regional players have been attempting to end the conflict in Gaza through a peace deal between Hamas and Israel, which would include the release of Israeli hostages and a form of lasting cessation of military activities.

Kyrgyzstan brings back wives, children of Daesh terrorists

--------------

BISHKEK: Kyrgyzstan repatriated around 20 women and children from Syrian camps on Friday in the Central Asian state’s latest mission to return those stranded by the collapse of Daesh.

Thousands, including from Muslim-majority countries in Central Asia, joined extremist groups like Daesh at the height of the Syrian war from 2013 to 2015.

Many militants and their family members are now held in detention centers or are stuck in displacement camps, often in dire conditions as countries concerned about security threats resist calls for their repatriation.

“On July 19, 2024, another humanitarian mission was carried out to repatriate citizens of Kyrgyzstan staying in refugee camps in the northeast of Syria,” Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Ministry said.

“As a result, 22 citizens of the Kyrgyz Republic — eight women and 14 children — were safely brought back to their homeland,” it said.

It added that the US, UNICEF, and other international bodies helped carry out the operation.

More than 500 Kyrgyz citizens have been repatriated since 2021, most of whom need to be rehabilitated before reintegrating into Kyrgyzstan’s officially secular society, according to authorities.

The issue of whether to repatriate the families of terrorists is also sensitive in European countries, many of which refuse to let citizens linked to radical groups return.

Bangladesh Quota Protest: Violent clashes in Dhaka, 39 dead, Govt TV building set ablaze

July 19, 2024

The death toll in violent clashes between protesting students and security forces in Bangladesh has risen to 39.

Media reports indicate that protesters set fire to the government television building, resulting in its broadcasts being cut off.

According to reports, hundreds have been injured due to tear gas and plastic bullets fired by the police. Protesters have also set fire to vehicles, police checkpoints, and some government facilities.

According to NetBlocks, on Thursday night, internet access across Bangladesh was “almost completely cut off,” and international phone calls were also not connecting.

Reuters reports that the streets of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, appeared deserted on Friday, with broadcasts from state news networks in the country being halted due to increased violence.

Protests in Bangladesh began late last month, but on Monday, student activists at Dhaka University clashed with police and opponents of the protests. Since then, the protests have spread to various cities in the country. Experts attribute these disturbances to high unemployment rates in the country.

Protesters in Bangladesh have been blocking roads for several days in protest against the allocation of 30% job quotas in government positions to families whose members participated in the country’s independence war with Pakistan. As the protests turned violent, many students clashed with police using stones and sticks.

The unrest underscores deep-seated socio-political tensions in Bangladesh, exacerbated by economic disparities and contentious government policies.

From Removing Muslim Staff to Displaying Aadhaar Cards, How Dhaba Owners Are Complying with Kanwar Yatra Order

JULY 20, 2024

Days after Muzaffarnagar Police asked all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their owners’ names, the Uttar Pradesh government is extending the controversial order across the state. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, too, said similar instructions are already in place in the hill state.

As per the order in Muzaffarnagar, hotels, dhabas and roadside eateries along the yatra route have been asked to display their owners’ names, addresses and mobile phone numbers. The Muzaffarnagar police said earlier this week that its advisory earlier this week for the duration of the Kanwar Yatra was aimed at avoiding any “confusion”.

“This has been done to ensure that there is no confusion among kanwariyas and no law-and-order situation arises. All are following this voluntarily,” district police chief Abhishek Singh told reporters then.

The order has been heavily criticised by opposition parties who say it targets Muslim traders.

News18 visited certain prominent eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to gauge the response of establishment owners and workers to the order. Our first stop was ‘Delhi Dhaba’ on the Muzaffarnagar-Haridwar highway. The proprietor of the dhaba said they had not only displayed the owner’s name but had also displayed the names of all employees working there along with their phone numbers. All of the names displayed are Hindus.

After Muzaffarnagar, UP Govt Extends Across State Order On Kanwar Yatra Route Eateries

July 19, 2024

Days after the Muzaffarnagar police asked all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their owners’ names, the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday extended the controversial order across the state.

The order issued on Monday has been slammed by opposition parties and members of the ruling alliance, who say it targets Muslim traders.

An Uttar Pradesh government spokesperson said a formal order is likely to be issued soon.

On Monday, Muzaffarnagar police ordered all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners to avoid any “confusion”.

“About 240 kilometres of Kanwar Yatra route falls in the district. All the eateries, including hotels, dhabas and carts, on the route have been asked to display the names of their proprietors or those working on these shops,” Muzaffarnagar police chief Abhishek Singh said.

“This has been done to ensure that there should be no confusion among kanwariyas and no law-and-order situation arises. All are following this voluntarily,” he had told reporters then.

Justifying the move, V K Mishra, in-charge of the weights and measures department of Meerut, said that as per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, every restaurant and dhaba ‘sanchalak’ (person running the eatery unit) needed to display the name of the firm, the owner’s name and the licence number.

Kanwar Yatra Row: Jamiat Ulema-e-HindCondemns Order, Says It'll Empower Those Seeking Muslims' Economic Boycott

19 July 2024

New Delhi: Prominent Muslim organisation Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind on Friday condemned the order in Uttar Pradesh asking all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their owners' names, saying just as the Dalit community has been subjected to unto...

Jamiat president Maulana Mahmood Madani said although this decision is being implemented in a specific area, its ramifications will be far-reaching.

"It will empower forces that seek the economic boycott of Muslims and provide opportunities for anti-national elements to exploit the situation," he said.

Madani described the decision as "unjust, discriminatory and a clear manifestation of prejudice".

"Just as the Dalit community has been subjected to untouchability and presented as impure for centuries, now there is a deliberate attempt to treat Muslims similarly and relegate them to second-class citizens," Madani said in a statement.

"This action tarnishes the cultural identity, fabric and grandeur of our nation, which is rooted in the teachings of Buddha, Chishti, Nanak and Gandhi. Such divisive measures will never be acceptable," he said.

Madani pointed out that the areas through which the Kanwar Yatra pass have a significant Muslim population.

"Muslims have always respected the beliefs and practices of the Kanwariyas and have never caused them any harm. However, such an order will severely damage communal harmony and create divisions and misunderstandings among the people," he said.

Madani demanded that the Uttar Pradesh government must immediately withdraw this deplorable decision and focus on fostering unity and harmony among all communities.

Days after the Muzaffarnagar Police asked all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their owners' names, the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday extended the controversial order across the state.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said similar instructions are already in place in his state as well.

Muslim Shrines InKolhapur Were First Attacked In 2023. But The Vandals Got Away

Ayush Tiwari

On the morning of July 14, a mob targeted Muslim residents in Gajapur village in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district.

The Quint reported that some residents were physically assaulted, their homes were ransacked and a video showed the men attacking the Sunni Raza Jama masjid in the village.

But this is not the first time that Hindutva groups have targeted Muslims in Gajapur, a village at the foothills of the centuries-old Vishalgad fort.

In February 2023, on the occasion of the Hindu festival Maha Shivratri, a Muslim shrine at the foot of Vishalgad fort was attacked.

Called the Hazrat Sayyed Malik Rehan Meera Saheb dargah, the shrine is located two-and-a-half kilometres from the Sunni Raza Jama masjid that was attacked on July 14.

That story went mostly unreported.

Even at the time, the violence was linked to a movement to clear “illegal encroachments” near the fort led by Sambhaji Raje Chhatrapati, a former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament.

Several of the men involved in the 2023 violence told Scroll they were associated with the Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena or flaunted their political links on social media.

Soon after, local residents had petitioned the Kolhapur administration to rein in the attackers. The residents were then led by Nazim Mujawar, the chief priest at the dargah, who passed away earlier this week.

But the district administration’s actions left much to be desired. Police officials were present at the site, videos show, yet it took the police more than a week to nab the accused. Only six men were booked and some of them arrested. At least two of them were granted bail within days.

In its press statements, the Kolhapur police also misrepresented their links to right-wing Hindu outfits and political parties.

The Maha Shivratri violence

Sambhaji Raje, a descendant of 17th century Maratha warrior-king Shivaji, is the face of the movement to remove “encroachments” around several forts in Maharashtra.

The settlements at the Vishalgad fort, located only a couple of kilometres from Gajapur, have been on his radar.

In December 2022, Raje met the Kolhapur district magistrate to discuss the encroachments around the fort, reported the Times of India. The district magistrate assured Raje that “the work to remove encroachments over Vishalgad fort will start before Maha Shivratri”, which fell on February 18, 2023.

In a letter written on January 12, 2023, Nazim Mujawar, the chief priest of the shrine, told the Kolhapur district magistrate that the people living at the foothills of Vishalgad had been there for generations.

“We are priests of the dargah and our traditional occupation continues till date,” he wrote. “Many generations of us have lived here.”

Within days of Raje’s visit, however, the Maharashtra archaeology department served demolition notices to residents within the fort’s precincts.

On February 16, two days before Maha Shivratri, the Bombay High Court stayed the demolition after residents argued that the structures around the fort had been regularised, and that they were being discriminated against on religious grounds.

The court stay did not end their anxieties. On February 18, dozens of men, draped in saffron stoles, gathered outside the Hazrat Sayyed Malik Rehan Meera Saheb dargah at the feet of the Vishalgad fort.

The dargah is more than a century old, finding mention in the Gazetteer of Bombay Presidency published in 1886.

The mob of attackers had little concern for the history of the shrine or those who lived around it.

Posters shared by them on social media before the gathering showed a JCB demolishing the dargah. They shared similar posters before the July 14 violence.

Around 11 am on February 18, the men stuffed a small cannon with pellets. They then set up the cannon to face the dargah and fired it. Such was the impact of the explosion that the surface below the cannon cracked.

The attack left several dents on the gate of the dargah, made out of white marble. The men exulted, played loud music, set off firecrackers and danced.

Videos showed that police officials were present when the cannon was fired at the religious structure. The entire episode was captured on camera since the attackers filmed it and flaunted it on their Instagram and Facebook profiles.

Days after this vandalism, local residents petitioned the district magistrate regarding the violence. In a letter, seen by Scroll, they detailed the damages.

“The sanghathan workers broke the drinking water tanks of some villagers on the fort. The doors of some villagers’ houses were kicked. A stone was thrown at the window,” they wrote. “The wall of a Dargah trustee’s house where a court case is pending was demolished.”

It added that the men abused the local women and young men. “An atmosphere of fear has spread among the citizens due to the sudden sound of the cannon,” it added. “Therefore, the administration should make appropriate efforts to prevent such incidents from happening again.”

The villagers said that there was “permanent Hindu-Muslim harmony at Fort Vishalgad” and the administration should not let outsiders disturb this.

They also demanded that two policemen should be provided permanently at the fort to avoid such incidents of vandalism. “Proper precautions should be taken so that such kind of things do not happen again at the fort,” they said.

The letter was undersigned “all Hindu-Muslim villagers, Vishalgarh fort”.

The police case

It took the Kolhapur police more than a week to arrest the miscreants involved in the Maha Shivratri violence in February 2023.

In a press note released on February 26, 2023, the Shahuwadi police station said it had filed an FIR in the matter and arrested six men: Arun Injulkar, Rohit Kurne, Praveen Mandavkar, Siddharth Katakgondh, Suhas Shinde and Ramesh Pawar.

The men were charged with Indian Penal Code sections on deliberately outraging religious feelings, defiling a place of worship, mischief causing damage and unlawful assembly.

In a strange turnaround in the same press note, the police said that “some people in both Hindu and Muslim communities have spread false rumours and information through the social media that Hazrat Pir Malik Rehan Baba Dargah was attacked and stone pelted.”

It also said that none of “the accused are not workers of any political party”. But two of the accused contradicted this claim.

Arun Injulkar told Scroll that he was a member of the Bajrang Dal, the youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, which is part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the parent organisation of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

“I was arrested but the police released me on bail two days later,” said Injulkar, who runs a cloth shop in Kolhapur. “We were only celebrating our festival. I don’t know what is wrong with that.”

Praveen Mandavkar also told Scroll that he was a Bajrang Dal member and had been let out on bail “three or four” days after his arrest.

Siddarth Katakgondh’s Instagram bio mentions Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal. It has photos of him posing with BJP politicians, including Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Telangana MLA T Raja Singh.

The other men seen in the videos of the Maha Shivratri violence include Sambhaji Salunkhe, Harshal Surve and Rushikesh Sali.

Surve, who justified the violence in a Facebook post, describes himself as the “city coordinator” of the Shiv Sena in Kolhapur on his social media profile.

Salunkhe, who contested from Kolhapur North assembly seat in 2019, unfurled a saffron flag outside the dargah.

Sali’s instagram says that he is the vice president of the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena in Hupari town in Kolhapur district. A video on his Instagram account shows him carrying the cannon to the front of the shrine.

Surve, Salunkhe, and Sali were not booked for attacking the Meera Saheb dargah.

Assam Will Become Muslim-majority State by 2041: CM

20 July 2024

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed the state will become a Muslim-majority by 2041. Biswa said the Muslim population was growing around 30 per cent every 10 years.

Sarma said Muslims have now become 40 per cent of Assam's population as per "statistical sampling".

"The increase in the population of Muslims in Assam is a statistical fact. The rate of population increase of Muslims is much more than of Hindus and at this rate, they will be a majority by 2041," he was quoted as saying by India Today.

Sarma also said the population of Hindus is rising by around 16 per cent every 10 years when compared to the growth of Muslims for the same period.

"Hindu population has increased by 16 per cent. Muslims constituted 1.40 crore of Assam's population in 2011. There is an increase of 30 per cent of the Muslim population every 10 years. In every decade, the Muslim population is outstripping the Hindu population by 16 per cent. In every decade, there is an addition of 22 lakh Muslim population," he said, as per the report.

Earlier, Sarma ahd said the changing demography in Assam was a huge concern and said the issue for him was not political, but "a matter of life and death".

"Changing demography is a big issue for me. In Assam, the Muslim population has reached 40 per cent today. In 1951, it was 12 per cent," Sarma had said.

He added, "We have lost many districts. This is not a political issue for me. It is a matter of life and death for me."

Sarma's remark drew a sharp reaction from Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who accused him of "suffering from amnesia".

Assam to abolish law that allowed underage Muslim marriages

Jul 19, 2024

The Assam Cabinet has given its approval for a bill aimed at repealing the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act and Rules of 1935, which allowed underage marriages under certain conditions.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday.

"We have taken a significant step to ensure justice for our daughters and sisters by putting additional safeguards against child marriage," Sarma stated on social media after leading the Council of Ministers meeting.

Upcoming legislation

Repealing Bill 2024 to be presented in Monsoon Session

The Repealing Bill 2024, which is set to abolish the Act, will be presented during the upcoming monsoon session of the assembly.

The Cabinet had initially approved the decision to repeal this Act on February 23, as part of an effort to end child marriage in Assam.

"This Act contained provisions allowing marriage registration even if the bride and groom had not reached the legal ages of 18 and 21, as required by law," Sarma explained.

Political backlash

Opposition parties criticize move as discriminatory

The decision to repeal the act has been met with criticism from opposition parties, who have labeled it discriminatory against Muslims.

Congress MLA Abdul Rashid Mandal claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is absolutely "anti-Muslim government and is trying to show the Hindu people that the government is favoring them and depriving the Muslims."

All India United Democratic Front legislator Rafikul Islam (AIUDF) said the decision was taken with the ''intention of targeting Muslims in an election year."

Assam Cabinet approves key healthcare initiatives

In other decisions from Thursday's Cabinet meeting, Sarma announced a reduction in VAT on CNG from 14.5% to 5%, effective until March 31, 2027.

The meeting also approved financial sanctions for key healthcare initiatives, including 200 crore for the Assam Cancer Care Foundation and 375 crore for the Mukhya Mantri Ayushman Asom Yojana (MMAAY) for 2024-25.

Additionally, 401.50 crore was released to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) as the first installment for fiscal 2024-45 under the SOPD-G fund.

"Reality of hatred for Indian Muslims" says Owaisi on ID card rule for shops on Kanwar Yatra route

Jul 20, 2024

Slamming the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and those in the INDIA bloc, Owaisi said that this "visceral hatred" is due to political parties or leaders of Hindutva and those parties who call themselves "secular".

"Fear on UP's Kanwar routes: This is The reality of hatred for Indian Muslims, credit for this visceral hatred goes to political parties /leaders of Hindutva and so-called lip servicing Secular parties," Owaisi said in a post on 'X', sharing a photo of an egg stall displaying the name of its owner

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal (/topic/kapil-sibal) also took a dig at this move asking whether the Kanwar Yatra (/topic/kanwar-yatra) route is the same as the journey towards 'Viksit Bharat'.

"Kanwar Yatra (/topic/kanwar-yatra) Route UP directs eateries including roadside carts to display the names of owners! Is this the route to a "Viksit Bharat"? Divisive agendas will only Divide the country!" Sibal said in a post on 'x'.

"Uttar Pradesh government is destroying the Constitution of India by issuing such orders...A whole community is being humiliated...They are trying to divide society...This type of targeting was done by Nazis in Germany...I condemn it," Karat said speaking to ANI on Saturday

Asking courts to step up, the CPIM leader said, "Why are the courts not taking suo-moto action against it?... The order should be withdrawn."

Meanwhile, BJP leader Mohsin Raza supported the move, stating, "Kanwar Yatra (/topic/kanwar-yatra) takes place on a large scale in UP. CM Yogi Adityanath (/topic/yogi-adityanath) has always been attentive to the security of the public."

The facilities and management of Kanwar Yatra (/topic/kanwar-yatra) have always been improved over the last 7 years. This is the eighth year. The government is providing facilities and security. So no one has to hide their name. It also conveys a message of harmony. The opposition is trying to oppose the Kanwar Yatra (/topic/kanwar-yatra) and not this advisory," Raza added.

BJP National General Secretary Dushyant Kumar Gautam dismissed concerns, stating, "The public living in areas for which the orders have been passed have no problem. The Muslims have no problem with it; they welcome the Kanwar yatris. Unfortunately, some people are doing politics on it."

routes should display the name and identity of the operator/owner to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrims' faith.

Additionally, action will be taken against those selling halal-certified products. The move by the Uttar Pradesh government to enforce the use of ID Cards by all shops in the state that fall along the Kanwar Yatra (/topic/kanwar-yatra) route has resulted in a political slugfest between the BJP and the opposition. Muslims worst hit by Covid-19 mortality during first wave in India, new study shows

Muslims saw the steepest decline in life expectancy in the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic in India, indicating the highest rise in mortality risk among all social groups, a new research paper based on the National Family Health Survey has found.

Life expectancy of Muslims went down by 5.4 years between 2019 and 2020, more than four times the decline of 1.3 years seen among upper-caste Hindus.

The decline among other socially disadvantaged groups was also high: 4.1 years for Scheduled Tribes and 2.7 years for Scheduled Castes.

Life expectancy is the average number of years that a person is expected to live. When mortality rises among a group, life expectancy goes down.

The paper published on Friday in the science journal Science Advances compared life expectancy at birth among Indians in 2019 to that in 2020, using data from the National Family Health Survey, which it says is representative of about one-fourth of India’s population.

Overall, life expectancy at birth among Indians was 2.6 years lower and mortality was 17% higher in 2020 than the previous year, the research found.

This implies 11.9 lakh excess deaths in 2020, according to the research paper. Excess deaths is a metric used to analyse Covid-19 mortality by calculating the divergence between deaths reported due to all causes in a pandemic year and in normal years.

This estimate for excess deaths in India in 2020 is nearly eight times the official number of Covid-19 fatalities, and 1.5 times the excess deaths estimated by the World Health Organization during the year, the researchers said in their paper.

Using this metric, the study found that in India, mortality increased in almost all age groups between 2019 and 2020, but most prominently among the youngest and older age groups, mirroring the trend seen across the world.

However, contrary to the global trend, the life expectancy of women in India declined by one year more than that of men in 2020.

Why is this study important?

Aashish Gupta, a post-doctoral research fellow at Oxford University and one of co-authors of the research paper told Scroll that this is the first study to have examined mortality impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic in India by sex, social group, and age.

Gupta also said that using data from the National Family Health Survey’s fifth round, the study revealed patterns in Covid-19 mortality in India that could not be observed in other data sources like the Civil Registration System, a nationwide system of recording all births and deaths.

The Civil Registration System has been found to be lacking in coverage among women and other marginalised groups even during normal times, Gupta said. “Moreover, the system was disrupted between March and May 2020, during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, due to a severe lockdown in India,” he added.

Vulnerable groups faced greater mortality risk

The study shows that excess mortality and a sharper decline in life expectancy prevailed across population groups that are vulnerable and marginalised in terms of sex, religion, caste and age.

For example, the study found an overall decline of 2.6 years in life expectancy between 2019 and 2020. But the loss among women was 3.1 years, that is one year more than the 2.1 years observed among men. This is in contrast to the global trend as in most countries, losses to life expectancy were greater for men than women, the study noted.

In normal years, women outlive men in India. But when the pandemic hit, the loss of life expectancy was larger among women due to gender-biased social conditions, Gupta told Scroll.

“We need to keep in mind that during the pandemic when everything is a pinch on your pocket, what gets prioritised in Indian households,” Gupta said. “When you are short of money and access to healthcare is limited, you would prioritise a male aged 40 to 60 years old who is probably the earning member of the family.”

Another factor Gupta pointed out was the underreporting of female deaths in official records like the Civil Registration System, which he said, was a shortcoming in the system even before the pandemic.

“If you look at serosurveys [which measure levels of antibodies against a virus], you will find the level of infection is similar among men and women, but the number of deaths is higher among men,” he said. “The National Family Health Survey shows that it is not that more men died, but that they are getting reported more because Covid death registration is a function of whether you are getting tested and counted as a death in a hospital.”

Like in the case of women, the study also found greater decline in life expectancy among disadvantaged caste and religious groups, as compared to privileged social groups in India.

Increased Covid-19 deaths among vulnerable groups showed that the inequality in access to healthcare widened during the pandemic.

This could explain why the decline in life expectancy among Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes was sharper than in upper caste Hindus, Gupta said. “The fact remains that excess mortality was higher in these marginalised groups and that got underreported, so that itself shows that what is happening to these groups does not make it to the national conversation,” he added.

For Muslims specifically, Gupta pointed out that marginalisation had become more prominent in recent years. “In the beginning of 2020, for example, there were riots in Delhi, so the narrative of marginalisation intensified, and there were reports of Muslim-dominated areas being completely cut off from health care.”

Gupta said the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi was an example of marginalisation of Muslims during the pandemic.

The religious congregation took place in March 2020 in Delhi’s Nizamuddin area, days before a countrywide lockdown was imposed. After the Centre declared the congregation as a hotspot for Covid-19 infection, rumours and fake news gave the spread of the coronavirus a communal hue.

In terms of age, increased mortality was most prominent among the youngest and older age groups, the study found. Gupta said that this was consistent with underlying patterns as these age groups have higher mortality rates even in normal situations. But due to the stress on the healthcare system caused by the pandemic, immunisation programmes for children and old-age care might have been disrupted resulting in mortality rates going even higher.

‘Triumphalist narrative’ debunked

Gupta also told Scroll that the study’s finding on the undercounting of deaths due to Covid-19 in 2020 punches holes in the “triumphalist narrative” within the government about pandemic mortality being contained before the second wave of the pandemic hit in 2021.

He said that the mortality due to Covid-19 in the second wave got more noticed because it was an acute crisis that took place over a very short period. “But existing data has not been able to capture the extent of mortality in 2020,” he said.

As an example, Gupta pointed out that the World Health Organization data on Covid-19 mortality in India showed fewer deaths in April 2020 as compared to the same month in the previous year. This was because, Gupta said, the WHO took the Civil Registration System at face value, but the system itself was impacted because of a lockdown in the country.

This sort of undercounting of deaths allowed the government to say that the worst of the pandemic was over even as serosurveys that provide an estimate of levels of antibodies against a virus suggested otherwise, Gupta said.

“In March 2021, there was this triumphalist narrative that we have overcome Covid and nothing happened,” Gupta said. “Our study shows that if you had datasets like the National Family Health Survey that monitor mortality more accurately, we would not have such a triumphalist interpretation of the pandemic. We would have been better prepared before the delta [second] wave arrived.”

In the wake of a surge in terror attacks in the region, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi will be visiting Jammu today to review the security situation there.

He is also expected to interact with senior leadership and the troops in the areas.

In six separate accidents this year, 11 Armed Forces personnel have been killed. Most of these casualties have taken place in the past few weeks alone. Besides, nine passengers also died when a civilian bus was targeted in Reasi last month.

Further, the recent attacks which have followed a series of precision attacks since October 2021 have moved deeper into regions such as Doda, Kathua and Reasi.

Gen Dwivedi’s second visit to Jammu

This is Gen Dwivedi’s second visit to the Jammu region since he took over from Gen Manoj Pande as the 30th Army Chief last month. It is being considered reflective of the priority that he accords to restoring stability to the Jammu region, which has seen an increase in terror attacks on security forces and on civilians in the last few years.

The latest attack took place on Monday night inside Koti forests in Doda district. Four Army personnel from Rashtriya Rifles, including a Captain, were killed in the encounter with a group of militants who are suspected to be the same group that fled after attacking security forces in the district’s Sezan forests on July 9, as per sources in the security establishment.

Earlier this week, The Indian Express also reported that the recent attacks are suspected to have been perpetrated by a “fresh batch of terrorists” who infiltrated in the past six months. They comprise of fighters from Pakistan’s Punjab as well as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa regions, as per sources. Most of them are suspected to be Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) recruits.

Since 2021, areas south of the Pir Panjal range, including Poonch, Rajouri and Jammu, have seen a surge in high-intensity terror targeting security forces and civilians.

Michigan Imam Accuses Israel of Harvesting Palestinian Organs, Praises Terrorist Leaders in Sermon

JULY 20, 2024

During a series of ceremonies commemorating the month of Muharram in the Shiite Hadi Institute Youth Community Centre in Dearborn, Michigan, on July 7 and 8, 2024, Imam Usama Abdulghani accused the Israeli military of skinning Palestinians and harvesting their organs, seen in a video published by MEMRI (The Middle East Media Research Institute) on Thursday.

Abdulghani stated, “There are a group of people in this world who, for 270 days, are facing the worst kind of atrocities imaginable. Now, the Yazids and Shemirs of today would like you and I to believe history began on October 7. No, history did not begin on October 7. These are people who regularly describe their military incursions as ‘mowing the lawn,’ so when you see them skinning the Palestinians or harvesting their organs or butchering…so imagine a group of people surrounded for so long by these kinds [of people], the worst of Allah’s creation.”

The tenth day of Muharram is Ashura, the holiday commemorating the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. On this day, according to Islamic history, Muhammad’s grandson Hussein and his family were killed by Muslim forces loyal to a different individual in pursuit of leadership.

The caliphate of Yazid ibn Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan, known as Yazid I, was characterized by the death of Muhammad's grandson and the start of the Second Fitna, a period of general disorder and civil war.

Abu al-Sabigha Shamir ibn Dhi al-Jawshan, known as Shemir, was the Arab military commander who killed Muhammad’s grandson.

Earlier in his speech, the Michigan Imam praised Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah for his piety and knowledge and quoted Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in support of the supreme leader.

Support for terrorist leaders

"When we are raising these children, who will be the soldiers of the Mahdi, we know what we are looking for…Inshallah, we are hoping to give our children a fighting chance to be in the army of the Mahdi,” Imam Abdulghani began. The Mahdi is a figure that appears at the end of the world to rid the world of injustice and evil. The Mahdi Army was an Iraqi Shia terrorist organization created by Muqtada al-Sadr in June 2003 and disbanded in 2008.

"So we want our children to be able to understand when they hear [Hezbollah leader] Hassan Nasrallah say that we are in Karbala, we are remembering Karbala, and we are in Karbala. We want our kids, the children, to get it, to understand,” Abdulghani stated.

“When somebody is at the level of piety and knowledge like Hassan Nasrallah when he says a statement like that, is he not aware of the hadiths that talk about the status of Hussein?” Abdulghani then rhetorically asked.

"Why does he say that Imam Khamenei is the 'Hussein of the time?' Why does the [Iranian Supreme] Leader say – may Allah protect him and keep him for us until he takes us to the Mahdi. Why does the Leader say that the war in Gaza isn't a war between Gaza, Hamas, and Israel, this is Truth vs. Falsehood, all of faith vs. all of arrogance. Why would they say these things? Why do they connect the dots?” the Imam added.

‘They’re Not Listening To Us’: 100 Muslim Parents Oppose Gender Ideology at Virginia School Board Meeting

July 19, 2024

About 100 Muslims attended the Fairfax County School Board meeting on Thursday night to protest the school district’s plans to add radical gender ideology to elementary schools’ curriculums.

The Northern Virginia school district unanimously approved changes to its Family Life Education Curriculum on June 27—including teaching kindergartners about the supposed “gender spectrum” and middle schoolers about transgenderism—despite significant parental opposition.

A Muslim woman, Thoraia Hussein, a Fairfax mother of six, spoke against the district’s Family Life Education Curriculum and sexually explicit books in county libraries on behalf of Muslim parents and those of other faiths.

“According to the First Amendment, you may have personal beliefs, but you may not enforce them upon others,” Hussein said. “Referencing last year’s [Fairfax County Public Schools] parent survey, the majority chose not to pass gender ideology education and sex education to school curriculum.”

Hussein spoke about pornographic books in libraries, such as “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” “Gender Queer,” and “This Book is Gay.”

“Those books are not just sexually exploiting children, but also offend our core values as Muslims,” she said. Hussein’s minute-long speech was met with resounding applause and cheers throughout the packed auditorium.

Muslims have a history of taking a strong stand against radical gender ideology being taught in their children’s schools. Arab and Muslim protesters shut down a school board meeting in Dearborn, Michigan, in October 2022 over sexually explicit LGBTQ library books.

Muslims also protested outside the U.S. District Court in Maryland last summer in response to Montgomery County Public Schools’ plan to read LGBTQ “Pride Storybooks” to children without parental consent.

The Daily Signal spoke with Hussein after her public testimony.

While Hussein believes gender ideology is sinful due to her religion, she said she respects people with different beliefs. She just wants the school district to have that same respect for her beliefs.

“It’s not only about that respect,” she told The Daily Signal. “It’s about telling my children, ‘What you believe is wrong.’ I’m not going around telling your children what you believe is wrong. I respect what you choose for yourself. So, I just expect you to respect the same—what I chose for my children.”

Hussein had brought some of the sexually explicit books from local schools to her mosque, the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., to show other families the importance of opposing radical gender ideology in Fairfax County.

“We couldn’t even finish reading [them],” Hussein said of the books. “It was so inappropriate.”

That inspired about 100 Muslims, including the mosque’s imam, to support her public testimony at the School Board meeting.

Since her oldest child was in kindergarten 17 years ago, the district has made decisions based on surveys on parents, Hussein said, yet the district completely ignored parental pushback about adding gender ideology to the elementary school curriculum.

Most parents and community members do not support adding lessons on gender identity in elementary schools, the district admitted in a summary of comments submitted about the Family Life curriculum.

Parents shared concerns about lessons on gender identity not being age-appropriate for elementary schoolers, and expressed the belief that they, not schools, should be the primary educators of their children on such topics.

“Even though parents were really upset, saying that they don’t want their children to be introduced to such explicit sex information, still they said [the community review] is not accurate, and they went ahead, and they want to do a pilot program about it,” Hussein said. “And that’s what makes us feel as parents that we’re not heard. We are supposed to take care of our children, but at the same time, we’re not allowed to do so, because they’re not listening to us.”

The district will implement a pilot program in 14 elementary schools for a coed Family Life Education Curriculum for the 2024-2025 academic year.

As a mother of six and a local youth mentor, Hussein has firsthand experience with how age-inappropriate information about gender ideology harms children.

“I’ve seen a lot of issues with children going to school reading about things, and they don’t find anyone to actually explain to them about it,” she said. “So, they’re getting exposed to information that they don’t know how to process. And most of the time, parents are not there, or they are not aware because of the pressures of life.”

Hussein is concerned about the confusion caused by children learning they supposedly can be any gender they want.

“In my religion, we have only male and female,” she said.

Hussein’s youngest child, who is in elementary school, walked out of his classroom when his teacher started a lesson on gender ideology. The child told his teacher that it violates his religion.

When asked about the widespread parent opposition to gender ideology instruction, the school district told The Daily Signal that parents can opt their children out of the Family Life Education Curriculum.

“As you know, should any parent wish to opt their child out of FLE, they are able to do so,” said the district’s media relations manager, Julie Allen.

But parents shouldn’t have to opt their kids out, according to Hussein.

“A lot of parents, like immigrants, come from different backgrounds,” she said. “They don’t understand that there is a choice to opt out. And those are the most vulnerable children, because their parents cannot address it. They don’t understand what’s going on.”

Schools should focus on education and leave religion to parents, according to Hussein.

“Let’s leave this conversation to parents, because parents have to have the right to teach their children their values,” she said.

The Muslim families protesting gender ideology in Fairfax County don’t want to cause trouble, Hussein explained, adding they just want to protect their right to raise their kids in accordance with their faith.

“Our religion encourages us to love everyone,” she said. “At the same time, our religion is our life, and anything that touches that is considered a threat to who we are. So, it’s not that we hate anybody. We don’t want to force anyone into anything. And indeed, we don’t anyone to force whatever they want on us.”

CAIR-NJ Demands Review of School Official Who Allegedly Threatened Retaliation Against Muslim Students Over Ramadan Iftar Event

July 19, 2024

The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ) today condemned threats allegedly made by an assistant principal at Edison High School against members of the Muslim Students Association when the group requested to host a joint Ramadan iftar event with area schools earlier this year but was denied the opportunity.

Members of the Muslim Students Association (MSA) at Edison High School met with their Assistant Principal Nicole Himmelstein on February 29, 2024, to discuss their annual Ramadan iftar event.

The brief meeting, which only lasted for a few minutes, came after the MSA requested to host an Iftar event at Edison High and invite high school students from nearby Piscataway and North Brunswick. The MSA has held joint iftar events during Ramadan in previous years.

However, MSA board members were reportedly instructed by the assistant principal that they were barred from hosting the iftar event with other schools, citing security concerns, two MSA board members who attended the meeting told CAIR-NJ.

Instead, the assistant principal told them the MSA can either host an iftar event only for Edison High School students or not do it at all, according to MSA members and an audio recording of the meeting.

AUDIO RECORDING REVEALS THREATS

In the audio recording, Himmelstein is allegedly heard telling MSA students that she would take action against them if they seek outside entities in advocating for the joint iftar event at the school.

LISTEN: Edison High School Assistant Principal Threatens Muslim Students

“I have no problem contacting your university where you got in and explaining what’s going on if you want to take it further,” Himmelstein allegedly says in the audio recording in what appears to be an attempt to intimidate the students.

Himmelsteinallegedly continued to question the character and values of the Muslim students, according to the audio.

“You guys are not upholding good leadership skills, and I don’t think any university would want to have students who don’t fulfill good character and values. Do we understand?” Himmelstein says.

ACT NOW: Show Up and Speak at The Edison Board of Education Meeting on July 22

Taha Shaikh, former president of the MSA at Edison High School, said in a statement:

“I felt discriminated against, and the board felt afraid as well because it felt like she was threatening our college acceptances after we worked hard for four years.

“I felt she was trying to bully us into not hosting the joint event, even though other school clubs have been allowed to invite outside students to their events.”

In a statement, CAIR-NJ Interim Communications Manager Aya Elamroussi said:

“CAIR-NJ heard from students who expressed how the joint iftar event between high schools near Edison is how they build, cultivate and maintain a sense of community and belonging. It’s disheartening and extremely alarming to see a school official who is supposed to lead by example allegedly use her position of power to threaten Muslim students over an event aimed at nurturing their relationship and growing their community.”

“CAIR-NJ calls on the Edison Board of Education to review this matter and treat it seriously so that other students aren’t subjected to this type of vindictive behavior and bullying.”

BACKGROUNDER

CAIR-NJ obtained the roughly three-minute audio recording of the meeting between the eight-member MSA board and the assistant principal. CAIR-NJ has verified the authenticity of the recording and confirmed the names of speakers.

MSA members contacted CAIR-NJ for support and assistance while this incident was unfolding earlier this year. Ultimately, the students felt fear and intimidation after their meeting with the assistant principal who allegedly threatened retaliation simply for wanting to host a joint Iftar event. One MSA board member relayed to CAIR-NJ that they were concerned and afraid the assistant principal would disband the MSA altogether. CAIR-NJ is not naming that student because they expressed fear of retaliation.

CAIR-NJ is adhering to a confidentiality agreement with the person who shared the audio recording and will not release information about their identity.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

Saudi Arabia’s Mawhiba ties up with UNESCO to promote STEM education in Arab countries

July 20, 2024

PARIS: Mawhiba, an endowment organization that aims to nurture talented Saudi students in the scientific field, has signed a partnership agreement with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to foster science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education across Arab countries.

The agreement was signed on July 19, 20204 in Paris by Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al-Subail, Mawhiba deputy secretary-general for business development and communication, and Lidia Arthur Brito, UNESCO’s assistant director-general for natural sciences, Mawhiba said in a news release carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Mawhiba is the short name for the King Abdulaziz and his Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity, which was organized in 1999 in honor of Saudi Arabia’s founding king.

As explained by Brito, the partnership aims to enhance STEM education for students from 6th grade to 12th grade across Arab states, ”focusing on refining their scientific knowledge, nurturing creativity, and fostering critical thinking,“ according to news release.

It seeks ”to provide young people with the necessary knowledge and capabilities and to motivate them to use science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to meet global challenges,“ she said.

She said the experience gained by Mawhiba in working with youth in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will help in exchanging these experiences globally, adding that ”there is potential for expanding these efforts to Africa and other parts of the world to promote sustainable development goals.“

Special attention will be given to empowering Arab girls and young women, ensuring they have equal opportunities to excel in STEM fields, she said.

Mawhiba has identified 97,000 gifted students out of more than 300,000 tested in more than 100 cities and villages across the Kingdom. Its sponsorship of over 54,000 students and its participation in international science competitions for talented youth has reaped global recognition for the Kingdom.

Saudi students have so far won over 397 medals and prizes in these competitions, developed over 16,000 ideas, acquired 15 patents and over 1,000 Saudi students were accepted in the world’s top 50 prestigious universities in distinguished disciplines that meet the needs of national development plans, the SPA report said.

Mawhiba Secretary-General Amal bint Abdullah Al-Hazzaa emphasized the shared commitment to empowering young Arab minds and advancing sustainable development through education and innovation. She underscored the importance of this collaboration within the framework of Saudi Vision 2030.

Central to the initiative is the MAWHIBA-UNESCO Online STEM Oasis, which will serve as a global platform for local, national, and regional science and engineering fairs.

The partnership will focus on training Arab science teachers to lead research and guide students in scientific projects, thereby enhancing the overall quality of STEM education, said the Mawhiba news release.

”Mawhiba is committed to expanding the use of the UNESCO Open Science Portal and the UNESCO Science-2-Innovation Network to build the capacity of young scientists and women in STEM education globally.

“Over the past three years, Mawhiba has supported 839 students from Arab states through enriching STEM programs, setting a precedent for regional cooperation and development in STEM education,” it added.

How Saudi Arabia and its Asian partners are driving green development ahead of COP29

July 19, 2024

QINGDAO, China: As one of the world’s largest economies and contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, China is seen as having a particular responsibility among nations to help address climate change and promote sustainable development.

As such, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization invited Asian countries to participate in a two-day Green Development Forum in Shandong earlier this month to discuss solutions for a greener future.

China’s President Xi Jinping has expressed his desire to strengthen cooperation with regional parties to work toward common social and economic development goals, while at the same time fostering harmonious coexistence between people and nature.

Shen Yueyue, vice chair of the national committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and chair of the Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation Commission of the SCO, reiterated the need to foster this link between development and the environment.

“Development is development for all, and good development is green development,” Shen said in her keynote address at the forum, which was themed: “Joining hands in green development, together promoting harmony between humans and nature.”

Green development is a focus for many countries, including Saudi Arabia. Indeed, one of the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 reform agenda is ensuring sustainable practices in social and economic development.

Two such strategies launched by the Kingdom to promote green development and a low-carbon future are the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative.

Together, these initiatives aim to increase vegetation cover in Saudi Arabia and across the region by planting billions of trees to mitigate the effects of climate change and to help slow the rise of global temperatures in line with the Kingdom’s net-zero commitments

Another regional state that is making green development a key priority is Iran.

During the SCO conference in Shandong’s port city of Qingdao, Ali Salajegheh, vice president and head of Iran’s Department of Environment, discussed his country’s commitment to fighting climate change.

One example of this is the country’s role in hosting the International Conference on Sand and Dust Storms in 2023.

However, Salajegheh believes that addressing social and political issues is crucial to preventing a deepening of the environmental crisis in the region, including the need for economic stabilization and poverty reduction.

“Developing countries should make sure of their social and economic development as the main priority because the fight against poverty and the development of health and the provision of housing and energy is still for a significant part of the developing world considered a basic priority,” he said, according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA.

These efforts and more will be on the agenda at the 29th UN Climate Change Conference — COP29 — in Baku this November. In the run-up to this major event, host nation Azerbaijan has been working hard to achieve its green development goals.

Although Azerbaijan is a major player in the global oil and gas industry, ranking 20th in the world for proven oil reserves, one of the key pillars of its green development strategy is the rapid expansion of renewable energy infrastructure.

The country has made significant changes to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, begin the transition to renewable energy, and participate in the global effort to combat climate change.

In 2020, an agreement was signed between Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy and UAE firm Masdar to establish the country’s first solar energy facility — the 230-megawatt Garadagh Solar Power Plant.

The project occupies 550 hectares and currently boasts 570,000 bifacial photovoltaic panels, which capture the direct light of the sun and the reflection of sunlight from the ground.

Murad Sadikhov, the Garadagh Solar Power Plant’s country manager, told Arab News the facility has thus far achieved 24-gigawatt capacity. “But we have set a very ambitious goal to reach 100 GW by 2032,” he said.

Alongside the implementation of renewable energy projects, Azerbaijan is also encouraging the public to shift from using fossil fuel-intensive vehicles to adopting green modes of transport.

“The government is promoting a green agenda, not only in terms of establishing generative capacity but also on the demand side,” said Sadikhov.

“They promote electrical vehicles. They started the electromobility master plan. They hired prominent consultants. They established new rules and legislations such as the tax relief for EVs and are promoting EVs for public transportation, trying to maximize the use of electric transportation.”

Azerbaijan is also investing heavily in raising public awareness about environmentally friendly practices and training the next generation of sustainability professionals. “Most of the universities now have special programs for renewable energy,” said Sadikhov.

Although green development strategies have been adopted by several nations across Asia, experts and officials are keenly aware that more needs to be done to respond to the climate challenge without undermining social and economic development.

Design hopefuls from across MENA draw up plans to nurture nature

July 19, 2024

DHAHRAN: Promising designers from the MENA region are preparing to outline their solutions to some of the world’s most pressing nature-related problems as part of an annual creative competition hosted by the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra).

As part of Tanween, Ithra’s Season of Creativity, Tanween Challenges selected 80 designers from a pool of applicants to take part in the six-day challenge, with a July 20 deadline to deliver a tangible product or solution.

Designers across a range of disciplines will be aiming “to harmonize human activities with the planet’s biodiversity in an era where nature is affected by elements such as technological advancements, growing inequalities, and urbanization,” Sultan Al-Badran, creative programs developer at Ithra’s Idea Lab, said.

Each of the challenges will involve 20 participants, either as individuals or in teams. Competitors will also be offered workshops and talks with experts in their chosen disciplines to ensure they have the tools to tackle their challenge briefs.

Tanween Challenges asked designers to craft practical solutions in the key areas of urban development, graphic design, furniture, and fashion. Event partners include NYXO, Albawardi Group, AM Unique by NamtHajja, and Vanina.

Ithra said in a statement that the competition seeks solutions that “nurture all forms of life, supported by a cross-disciplinary blend of expertise to tackle these complex issues courageously and innovatively.”

The four categories are:

- Pavilion Design Challenge asks participants to reimagine how people can coexist with their environment — and each other — more harmoniously amid rapid urban development and industrial activities that have compromised air quality and contributed to pollution that affects people’s health and the health of natural habitats within their cities.

Graphic Design Challenge asks designers to develop visual communication to transform complex data into insights that will lead to a sustainable future, countering current threats to biodiversity and ecological balance.

- Participants in the Furniture Design Challenge will design public spaces that prioritizes people without neglecting the needs of other species that share the environment. Designers have been asked to answer the question: How can we create urban spaces that promote cohabitation between humans and other species?

Fashion Design Challenge looks to provide answers to problems associated with the fashion industry, such as overproduction, overconsumption and the dominance of fast fashion — issues that have not only harmed the environment but also erased much of the culture that was once celebrated in fabric form.

One winning project from each challenge will be selected for commercial production. Successful projects will be displayed as part of a design exhibition at the Tanween Conference in November at Ithra’s headquarters.

Rakan bin Bader, CEO and founder of Nahj, said: “As a young leader, I understand the importance of exposing young trainees to market demands. Vision 2030 places a significant emphasis on the role of youth in driving our country’s future.

“This unique chance excites me and motivates me to create opportunities for youth development and empowerment. By equipping young people with the necessary skills, we can prepare them to become great leaders who will contribute to our community and help realize this ambitious vision.”

Bader spoke of the key objectives of the initiative, emphasizing the need to bridge the gap between education and employment, provide practical training, and enhance the skills of young professionals.

He added: “We aim to equip them with the necessary tools to meet market demands and become successful leaders. By offering hands-on experience and mentorship, we hope to inspire and empower the youth to contribute positively to the Kingdom’s development.

“Our ultimate goal is to support Vision 2030 by creating a generation of well-prepared, capable, and innovative young leaders who will drive our nation’s progress.”

While addressing the challenges facing young professionals in Saudi Arabia, he highlighted the misalignment between educational outcomes and market needs.

He explained that although the educational system is robust, there is often a gap between academic knowledge and the practical skills required.

He added: “There is a growing emphasis on innovation, entrepreneurship, and the development of digital skills. The government and private sector are increasingly investing in programs and initiatives that support youth empowerment and career readiness.”

Jenan Kamal, chief operating officer and co-founder of Nahj, said: “One of the main challenges, particularly from an operational perspective, is selecting a limited number of students from a pool of highly qualified and experienced applicants.

“To address this, we partnered with multiple companies to increase the number of available seats. Additionally, we set high standards and implemented a rigorous application process to ensure we selected the best of the best.”

Kamal added: “We expect this program to lead change in both the private and public sectors, advocating for greater youth empowerment for those under 20.

“By raising expectations and setting a higher bar for young people, we aim to align with Vision 2030’s goals, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation among the youth.”

Rozana Al-Banawi, the founder of Qeema, the first Arabic personal financial coaching group, said: “Our program offers students a unique opportunity to enhance their understanding of startup culture, fintech, and personal financial coaching. By focusing on the intersection of these fields with well-being, research, and data, we aim to equip students with both soft and technical skills relevant to various professions.

“Emphasizing the development of a growth mindset, leadership, teamwork, self-discipline, and emotional intelligence, our program provides a practical, real-world learning experience. It encourages students to explore their motivations, expand their networks, and understand workplace complexities, ultimately fostering long-term benefits and personal growth.”

Danah Al-Jarboua, a high-school student entering 12th grade, shared her aspirations and expectations for the Nahj/Mrsool internship.

She said: “As I approach graduation, clarity in my career path is crucial. (I am) interested in industrial engineering (and) this program offers me the opportunity to explore and gain practical experience in a field that captivates me. It will help me discern if industrial engineering aligns with my ambitions, and illuminate the path ahead.

“Through practical assignments and mentorship, I aim to bolster my problem-solving, project management, technical, teamwork, and communication skills.

“These insights will not only guide my academic decisions but also fortify my college applications and lay a strong foundation for my future career.”

Bayan Kamal, a driven business intern with aspirations in marketing, reflected on the impact of the internship program, saying: “My career path is firmly set on marketing, and this internship has reaffirmed my direction by providing invaluable hands-on experience and strategic insights into marketing strategies.

“Through managing and engaging with audiences on social media platforms, I aim to enhance my social skills and public-speaking abilities, crucial for effective communication in marketing roles.

“This program offers me early exposure and practical knowledge that will undoubtedly give me a competitive edge in my future career. I look forward to showcasing my acquired experience and skills, setting a strong foundation for my journey in marketing.”

Bader is optimistic regarding the future of career development and talent acquisition in Saudi Arabia.

He said: “We are moving towards a more dynamic and inclusive job market. Emphasis on continuous learning, upskilling, and reskilling will become crucial. Companies are recognizing the value of investing in young talent and creating environments that foster growth and innovation.

“By leveraging technology and embracing new educational models we can ensure that young professionals are well prepared to meet future demands and contribute significantly to the Kingdom’s progress.”

Saudi team wins four international awards at 2024 European Physics Olympiad

July 19, 2024

RIYADH: The Saudi team won four international awards at the 2024 European Physics Olympiad this week in Georgia.

The team members were among 275 high-school students from 55 countries competing at the five-day event, which began on Monday and concluded on Friday, the Saudi Press Agency reported. Their success brings the total number of academic Olympiad awards won by Saudi students to 21.

Mazen Al-Shakhs, from Al-Ahsa, won a silver medal, while Wissam Al-Qanbar, from the Eastern Province, and Ahmed Arif, from Jeddah, each won bronze. Ahmed Fadlallah, from Makkah, received a certificate of appreciation.

The students were participating in the contest with the support of the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity, also known as Mawhiba, and the Ministry of Education.

Amal Al-Hazzaa, the secretary-general of Mawhiba, said she was proud of what the students accomplished, describing it as yet another achievement by talented Saudi individuals in international competitions.

“Mawhiba is dedicated to empowering talented Saudis by developing their skills and competencies using the latest global methods for discovering and nurturing talent,” she added. “This effort aligns with, and contributes to, the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.”

The Saudi team members competing at the event underwent intensive preparation, including tuition from an elite group of Saudi and international experts. They took regular tests and developed their higher-level thinking skills by carrying out physics experiments with which they were unfamiliar, that were designed specifically for such local and international competitions. They also used tools tailored to prepare them for the kinds of questions and tasks they would face, which included challenging ideas and puzzles.

The European Physics Olympiad is a competition in which high-school students are presented with problems that require creative solutions. It is open to countries in Europe and beyond, which can send five students and one leader. The inaugural event took place in Estonia in 2017. The concept behind the Olympiad is based on real-world research situations, with problems that allow space for creative solutions.

Mawhiba thanked its partners, including the Ministry of Education and other strategic collaborators, for their help to train and hone the skills of Saudi students for the event. This formed part of the Mawhiba International Olympiad Program which, in a strategic partnership with the ministry, offers students the chance to attend training camps throughout the year. It is one of 20 initiatives that offer advanced curricula and enrichment programs in subjects related to science, engineering and health.

Some convictions overturned in terrorism case against Muslim scholar from Virginia

July 19, 2024

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — A judge has overturned a conviction carrying a life sentence for an Islamic scholar from Virginia who was found guilty of soliciting treason after the Sept. 11 attacks for encouraging followers to fight against the U.S. in Afghanistan.

The ruling issued Thursday from U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema overturns three of the 10 counts of conviction against Ali Al-Timimi. But she upheld other counts that could leave him with decades of prison time beyond the 15 years he already served.

Al-Timimi, 60, was indicted in 2004, and convicted and sentenced in 2005. Prosecutors said the U.S.-born scholar, who grew up in the nation's capital and had earned his doctorate in computational biology shortly before his arrest, enjoyed rockstar status among his small group of followers.

At a private gathering a few days after the Sept. 11 attacks, Al-Timimi told his followers — some of whom trained for jihad by playing paintball in the Virginia woods — that an apocalyptic battle between Muslims and the West loomed, and that Muslims were obliged to defend the Taliban if they had the ability to do so, according to trial testimony.

Several members did travel as far as Pakistan and received military training from a militant group called Lashkar-e-Taiba, but none ever actually joined the Taliban.

After Thursday's ruling from Brinkema, what happens next for Al-Timimi is unclear. He was released from prison in 2020 and placed on home confinement, partly because of the coronavirus pandemic and partly because his appeals have been bogged down in delays for nearly 20 years.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond still has not heard Al-Timimi's initial appeal of his conviction, but it's expected the appeal can now proceed. Among other issues, Al-Timimi's lawyers have contended that his conviction violates the First Amendment by punishing him for his speech.

Al-Timimi would presumably remain on home confinement while the appeal is heard unless prosecutors or the judge sought to have him returned to prison.

The counts that were overturned relate to whether they were based on an unconstitutionally vague “crime of violence.” The issue stems from Supreme Court cases over the last nine years that have affected many criminal cases across the country.

Prosecutors had contended the convictions should stay in place, but Brinkema said soliciting treason is not inherently a crime of violence and could be accomplished “through aiding and comforting the enemies, which does not necessarily require the use, attempted use or threatened use of physical force.”

She rejected allegations that prosecutors failed to disclose information that the government sought to use another northern Virginia cleric, Anwar al-Awlaki, against Al-Timimi as an informant, and that al-Awlaki tried unsuccessfully to lure Al-Timimi into illegal conduct as part of a government sting.

Al-Awlaki later left the U.S. and became a leader in al-Qaeda before he was killed in a U.S. drone strike.

Prosecutors have long argued that they disclosed everything they were supposed to disclose about the meeting between the two clerics. Brinkema, in her ruling Thursday, confirmed that she reviewed the documents in question years ago and had also concluded that the defense was not entitled to any of the information because it did nothing to suggest al-Timimi's innocence.

Neither the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia nor Al-Timimi's lawyers responded to emails seeking comment Friday.

ISIS-linked terrorist attack on bus terminal thwarted – FSB

19 Jul, 2024

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Friday that it foiled a terrorist plot targeting a bus terminal in the southern city of Essentuki.

According to an official statement, FSB officers detained one man suspected of preparing the attack, allegedly a migrant from a Central Asian republic and a member of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).

The FSB published footage of the arrest and subsequent interrogation. In the video, the detainee is heard confirming that he “pledged allegiance” to IS and planned to carry out the attack on the group’s orders. After the attack, he planned to travel to Syria to join the terrorist organization.

The suspect planned to use an improvised explosive device to carry out the attack, the FSB said. Officers said they discovered components for the device in a hiding place in a garage rented by the detainee. They also said the suspect studied the site of the attack, attempting to determine the time of mass gatherings of people there, and had selected the spot to plant the explosive device before being apprehended. Propaganda materials of a terrorist nature were found at the suspect’s place of residence.

A criminal investigation was launched into the case on charges of ‘preparation of a terrorist act.’ The suspect faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Earlier this month, the FSB said it foiled another attempted terrorist attack in the southern region of Adygea. The suspect, also a migrant from a Central Asian republic, allegedly targeted an Orthodox church in the city of Maykop and intended to kill priests and set the building on fire.

In March, a major terrorist attack took place at the Crocus City Hall concert venue outside Moscow, which claimed over 140 lives. Four gunmen stormed the venue, shooting indiscriminately and setting fire to the building.

ISIS-K, an Afghanistan-based offshoot of Islamic State, claimed responsibility for the attack, but Russian investigators later said they found evidence pointing to the possible involvement of Ukraine’s security services.

Britain will resume funding to UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA

July 19, 2024

LONDON: Britain’s new Labour government said on Friday it would resume funding to the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA and called on Israel to allow more aid to enter Gaza.

Britain was one of several countries to halt their funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) following accusations by Israel that some agency staff were involved in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel that triggered the Gaza war.

British foreign minister David Lammy told parliament he was reassured that the agency, which provides education, health and aid to millions of Palestinians, had taken steps to “ensure it meets the highest standards of neutrality” and the government would now provide 21 million pounds ($27.1 million) in new funding.

Lammy said malnutrition in Gaza was now so severe that mothers could not produce breast milk for their children and the rates of diarrhea were 40 times their normal rates and polio had been detected.

“Humanitarian aid is a moral necessity in the face of such a catastrophe, and it is aid agencies who ensure UK support reaches civilians on the ground,” he said.

“UNRWA is absolutely central to these efforts. No other agency can deliver aid at the scale needed.”

Other countries including Japan, Germany, Italy, Australia and Canada have resumed funding to the agency.

Israel accuses UNRWA of complicity with Hamas, saying the militant Islamist group was embedded within the UN agency’s infrastructure.

A review, led by former French foreign minister Catherine Colonna, published in April said Israel had not provided evidence for its accusations that hundreds of are members of militant groups.

In February, Britain’s then-foreign minister David Cameron said he wanted an “absolute guarantee” that UNRWA would not employ staff who were willing to attack Israel.

Cameron was replaced by Lammy as foreign minister following the Labour Party’s July 4 election win.

GB News says sorry for mistaking mayor for Muslim cleric

19 Jul, 2024

A news channel has apologised for wrongly describing a Muslim cleric as the mayor of Brighton and Hove, Mohammed Asaduzzaman.

On Patrick Christys Tonight on GBNews on Tuesday (16 July), it was also wrongly suggested that Councillor Asaduzzaman was a “regional mayor” who might benefit from devolved powers being proposed by the new Labour government.

A clip of a Muslim cleric arriving at a mosque was said to show the mayor of Brighton and Hove who has no executive powers and is politically neutral.

The clip was a TikTok post by the Aslamiya Foundation of Muslim cleric Shaykh Sufi Muhammad Asghar Aslami arriving at the Mosque Centre in Bedford in June.

The comments and clip were condemned by Brighton and Hove City Council leader Bella Sankey who said that the segment was “racist garbage” and called for an immediate correction and apology.

In his programme yesterday (Thursday 18 July), Mr Christys apologised for both mistakes, saying that Councillor Asaduzzaman was not the person in the video and was a ceremonial mayor and, in that role, acted in a non-political capacity.

Earlier this week, a clip from the show was tweeted by Queen’s Park resident Adrian Hart who criticised the error.

Russian prosecutors request 18-year term for WSJ reporter for spying

19 Jul, 2024

Prosecutors in Russia have requested an 18-year term in a maximum-security colony for Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who is accused of espionage, TASS reported on Friday, citing the Sverdlovsk Regional Court.

The 32-year-old US citizen was arrested in March last year while allegedly trying to gather classified information about Uralvagonzavod, a major Russian tank and armored vehicle manufacturer, in Ekaterinburg.

Gershkovich has been held in detention during the investigation. Last month, Russia’s prosecutor general launched court proceedings after formally charging Gershkovich with attempting to obtain military secrets for the CIA.

Both Gershkovich and the Wall Street Journal have denied allegations and have claimed that he is being held unlawfully.

Roger Carstens, US special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, said in June that Washington had attempted to broker a deal with Moscow for the release of Gershkovich and Paul Whelan, another American arrested on espionage charges in Moscow nearly six years ago, but had thus far failed to succeed in these efforts.

The hearing on Gershkovich’s case is in progress, with a verdict expected later on Friday. The trial is being held behind closed doors as the case involves classified information. According to the court press-service, Gershkovich again denied any wrongdoing at the hearing.

At a press conference in New York on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow had “irrefutable” evidence that Gershkovich was involved in espionage. He noted that Russian and American intelligence agencies are in contact regarding a potential prisoner swap involving the journalist, but refused to give further details on the matter.

Turkish Agency donates medical equipment to Herat cancer ward

July 19, 2024

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) has made a significant contribution to the Herat Regional Hospital’s cancer ward, donating medical facilities and equipment valued at $55,000.

According to TIKA officials, this donation includes approximately 40 items, such as medicines, medical equipment, and facilities essential for cancer treatment.

The Consul General of Turkey in Herat emphasized, “We have provided a total of 40 items to enhance the capabilities of this hospital.”

Doctors specializing in oncology at the hospital expressed gratitude, stating that these new facilities have improved their ability to treat cancer patients effectively.

With the additional resources, the cancer ward has expanded from 10 to 18 beds, accommodating up to 30 patients daily for treatment.

Despite these improvements, doctors highlighted the ongoing need for advanced equipment, particularly for surgical procedures that are currently unavailable on-site.

Farooq Ahmad Sedeqqi, the head of the cancer center, lamented, “We still lack an operational operating room in our department. Patients requiring surgery must either travel to Herat or  Kabul.”

Looking ahead, Sedeqqi expressed hope, “If we can establish a radiation therapy department, we aim to offer comprehensive services locally, minimizing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.”

The cancer diagnosis and treatment department at Herat Regional Hospital has been operational for over four years, during which time it has diagnosed and treated 2,300 cancer patients.

This initiative underscores Turkey’s commitment to enhancing healthcare in Afghanistan, particularly in critical areas like cancer treatment, through cooperative partnerships and aid efforts.

The collaboration between TIKA and Herat Regional Hospital marks a significant step towards improving cancer care in Afghanistan.

Seven injured in explosion at Shia ceremony in Sar-e-Pol, Afghanistan

July 19, 2024

According to reports, seven individuals were injured in an explosion caused by a grenade blast during the Muharram ceremony at the Imamzadeh Yahya shrine in central Sar-e-pol province.

Local residents stated that an unidentified individual threw a grenade near the ceremony before sunset on Friday, July 19th.

As a result of this explosion, seven individuals were injured and were transferred to the provincial hospital.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. However, typically, ISIS-Khorasan Province targets gatherings of Shia Muslims.

So far, the Taliban have not commented on this incident.

Restrictions and widespread opposition from the Taliban marked this year’s Ashura ceremonies. Taliban forces lowered Ashura flags, particularly in  Kabul and Herat, and disrupted Shia religious rituals with violence.

According to the reports, this year during the Ashura, Taliban forces also recently detained seven protesters opposing the prevention of mourning ceremonies in Jabrail district.

The incident adds to the tensions surrounding this year’s Ashura ceremonies, which have faced significant restrictions and opposition from the Taliban across various provinces, particularly in  Kabul and Herat.

Taliban bans yellow Taxi, prohibits private vehicles for transporting city passengers

July 19, 2024

The Taliban Traffic Department has announced that taxi vehicles still bearing yellow colors without transitioning to turquoise and white are not permitted to operate.

The department issued a warning on Thursday, July 18th, stating that even privately-owned vehicles conducting passenger transport will face “legal consequences.”

Taliban authorities, in the month of May 2023, declared their intention to change the city taxi colors from yellow to turquoise.

The Taliban Traffic Department stated at the time that the color change would cost each taxi owner approximately 9,110 Afghanis.

Some taxi drivers protested after the Taliban decided to change the vehicle colors. These drivers cited financial constraints as reasons for their objection, arguing that they cannot afford the cost of color change.

They claimed that the Taliban’s decision to change taxi colors was aimed at extracting money from drivers.

Taliban officials, however, claim that they have decided to change taxi colors to improve security, reduce crimes, and beautify the city.

During the previous government in Afghanistan, city taxis operated with yellow and white colors, and some vehicles with private plates were engaged in passenger transport within cities.

The Taliban’s move to change taxi colors reflects their efforts to assert control over urban aesthetics and security measures, despite facing resistance from financially constrained taxi drivers.

The Taliban Public Traffic Department has warned that if personal vehicles or taxis with yellow color are seen in public transportation from now on, their drivers will face legal action.

Iran shuts down 25 Afghan-owned shops in Qeshm

July 19, 2024

Omid Mahdavi Majd, the prosecutor of Qeshm, Iran, has announced the closure of 25 shops that were rented out to Afghan migrants without valid residency documents.

Mr. Majd stated on Wednesday, July 18th, that renting properties and shops to migrants without documentation is prohibited.

According to the Young Journalists Club, the prosecutor of Qeshm mentioned that closing Afghan shops is part of an initiative to control and monitor the main markets in Dargahan, focusing on unauthorized foreign nationals.

Omid Mahdavi Majd emphasized that residents of Qeshm who rent property or homes to Afghans will be considered offenders and will face consequences.

Afghans constitute the largest population of foreign migrants in Iran.

Earlier, the Foreign Immigrants Affairs of Kermanshah Province announced restrictions on the movement, residency, and employment of Afghan migrants in 16 provinces.

East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, Ardabil, Zanjan, Kurdistan, Kermanshah, Ilam, Lorestan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Gilan, Mazandaran, Sistan and Baluchestan, Hormozgan, and Hamadan are among the provinces where housing and employment for Afghans have been prohibited.

In May, 540 Iranian artists, lawyers, doctors, journalists, and civil society activists demanded an end to the harassment of Afghan migrants in Iran, citing Iran’s legal system as a significant barrier to migrant integration into society.

These voices underscore the ongoing challenges faced by Afghan migrants in Iran.

Almost all acknowledge the Islamic Emirate’s achievements

July 20, 2024

With all the challenges facing Afghanistan, Afghans have witnessed notable developments in all sectors in the past almost three years. Almost three years after the development of mid-August 2021, when the Islamic Emirate regained control of Afghanistan, the situation in the country remains extremely hopeful as the overall security situation has improved across the country. Almost all the people of Afghanistan as well as the world have acknowledged progress that has been made in the past almost three years. Today, all acknowledge that the security situation in Afghanistan has significantly improved since the Islamic Emirate takeover. The Islamic Emirate is committed to providing better security to the people as today all citizens feel safe and mobility is increasing across the country by passing each single day. By bringing the country under the control of a single authority for the first time in more than 40 years, the Islamic Emirate has also curbed the influence of local warlords who have been acting above the law and terrorizing citizens. The Islamic Emirate is committed to keeping the country under the control of a single authority. At the regional level, the Islamic Emirate has managed to maintain good relationships with all neighboring and regional countries. The Islamic Emirate is committed to having good trade and diplomatic relations with all countries in the world and region. It has been the result of the good diplomatic policy of the Islamic Emirate that none of the countries in the region is interested in supporting a proxy war in Afghanistan today. In the meantime, the Islamic Emirate has managed to protect the country’s public sector institutions and infrastructure as most public institutions continue to provide a reasonable level of services. For example, the Islamic Emirate has managed to protect the Central Bank as it is working closely with national and international institutions to protect Afghanistan’s currency. Today, the country’s currency has its notable value against many international and regional currencies. In the past almost three years, the Islamic Emirate has made considerable progress in all other areas too as the Islamic Emirate has been able to put forward a national budget dependent only on national income. Today, almost all development projects that have been completed in the past three years have been funded through the national budget. The Islamic Emirate has been able to increase state revenue to the unprecedented level of over $100 million per month despite the economic difficulties facing the country and the low tax base that this has resulted in. Besides all the positive and notable progress that has been made in all areas in the past almost three years, the Islamic Emirate has ended all ethnic, regional, racial, or religious discrimination in the country. The Islamic Emirate is working to provide all necessary ground for the nation to improve their lives. The Islamic Emirate is committed to providing equal services to all citizens. The Islamic Emirate’s leadership has repeatedly emphasized that the IEA belongs to all Afghans and it is also the responsibility of every Afghan to work together for the prosperity and economic strength of the country. Today, all acknowledge that the Islamic Emirate is a reality and has the overall support of the Afghan nation as they did defeat the U.S.-led NATO forces, ended the 20- year invasion, took over the control of the country and brought the country under one single authority; therefore, it is time for regional and world countries to acknowledge this reality by officially recognizing the Islamic Emirate as a legal government of Afghanistan and enter to state – to – state relations with Afghanistan. Kandahar gets self-sufficient in poultry production

July 20, 2024

In the past, many provinces of Afghanistan relied on importing chickens and eggs from abroad, mainly from Pakistan. However, in recent years, the establishment of local poultry farms has significantly reduced the need for foreign chicken meat and eggs, with most demands now being met domestically. Kandahar, situated in southern Afghanistan and bordering Pakistan, previously depended on Pakistani imports for its chicken meat and eggs. But over the past few years, Kandahar’s residents have successfully developed their own poultry farms, diminishing the province’s dependency on foreign imports. Local farm owners report significant growth in poultry farming within Kandahar, achieving self-sufficiency in poultry production. Mohammad Azizi, a farm owner in Kandahar, highlighted that meat from local farms is now being supplied to neighboring provinces as well. Azizi commented, “In the past, chicken meat was imported from other countries. Now, with numerous poultry farms in Kandahar, we have achieved self-sufficiency in chicken meat production and are also supplying neighboring provinces.” Officials from the Kandahar Agriculture and Livestock Department indicated that there are over 400 registered poultry farms in the province, with the actual number of operating farms reaching approximately 800. Mawlavi Mohammad Hamid, the department’s livestock officer, noted the ongoing growth in poultry farming in Kandahar. He mentioned that if local farms can meet national demands, the government would consider restricting chicken meat imports. Hamid explained, “Officially, there are over 400 poultry farms, but the number of unregistered farms is around 800. This sector continues to grow, with new farms being established daily. If these farms can produce enough to meet Afghanistan’s needs, we will impose a ban on imported chicken meat.” Despite the increase in local farms, farm owners still import chicks, particularly from Pakistan. They believe that with better government support, including reliable electricity, chick production could also begin locally, boosting their profits significantly. Haji Hidayatullah, another farm owner, mentioned that a quarter of the chicks imported from Pakistan die during transit. “We frequently import chicks from Pakistan but often face losses. Establishing local chick production farms would greatly benefit us,” he stated. Besides poultry meat farms, Kandahar also has six egg production farms, producing up to 200,000 eggs daily, meeting 70% of local demand. Bilal Ahmad, a manager of an egg farm, said that these eggs are distributed to Kandahar city and surrounding districts. He added, “We plan to establish more egg production farms for 60,000 chickens and further invest in this sector.” Kandahar residents are pleased with the growth of local poultry farms, noting that locally produced chicken meat and eggs are of better quality compared to imports. Farid Ahmad, a resident, told The Kabul Times that previously imported meat and eggs from Pakistan were often expired and of low quality. “We are very happy with the local farms; the meat and eggs are much better than the old and low-quality imports,” he said. Recently, officials from the Afghanistan Poultry Association stated that approximately 600 poultry farms across Afghanistan produce up to 1.5 million eggs daily, meeting half of the market’s needs. Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Maryam Urges SC Judges to Let Country Progress

July 19, 2024

LAHORE: In a tirade against the apex court judgment awarding the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) its due share of reserved seats of women and minorities in the parliament, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said Friday the Supreme Court judges should let the country make progress.

Speaking at an event in Lahore, the chief minister said she would like to urge the top court judges to let the country move forward.

Maryam blamed the SC judges of rewriting the constitution to bring back one person to the politics. “Who are those (people) who do not like the country making progress and re-write the Constitution,” she wondered.

In a major legal victory for the PTI, the SC on July 12 ruled that the party was eligible for the allocation of reserved seats.

The decision has not only paved the way for the PTI's return to the parliament, which was kicked out of the February 8 polls owing to the ECP's December 2023 ruling, but has also increased the pressure on the coalition alliance as the judgement will change the composition of the National Assembly.

The Punjab chief minister said the top court gave the PTI relief that the party did not even seek.

The SC judges gave them 15 days to submit their affidavits claiming their affiliation with the PTI, despite the fact that they had already submitted documents affirming allegiance with another party, she said.

“We will not let this be a cake walk for you. This government will complete its five years’ tenure. If anyone tries to create political instability, they will be dealt with iron hands,” the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader warned.

"It was said that verdicts were announced according to their conscience," Maryam noted, adding that decisions should be according to the constitution, not according to a person's conscience.

She said the one they were trying to bring back was the nation’s criminal. "No one knew from where he was launched and from where he was sourcing funds," she maintained.

The PML-N leader said a group of few people gave such orders which halted the process of development. She also said that the law and Constitution did not allow floor crossing, while the “SC judge’s ruling said, you can commit floor crossing”.

Pakistan foils terror plot with arrest of top Al-Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden's close aide Amin ul Haq

Jul 19, 2024

On Friday, Pakistani counter-terrorism officials said that a "large-scale terrorism project" in the nation had been thwarted with the arrest of Amin ul Haq, a top Al-Qaeda leader and close aide to the assassinated terrorist Osama bin Laden, from Punjab province.

Usman Akram Gonadal, DIG, Counter-Terrorism Department said, "The terrorist was apprehended during an intelligence-based operation." Haq was arrested from Sarai Alamgir, a town in the Gujrat district of Punjab province, after being classified as a global terrorist by the United Nations.

A spokesperson for the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab Police called Haq's detention a major advance in the battle against terrorism.

The police representative stated that Haq had been a close ally of Al-Qaeda's founder, bin Laden, since 1996. Haq was reportedly involved in planning destructive activities throughout the province and aimed to attack significant facilities and individuals.

“The capture of Amin ul Haq marks a key progress in the continuous struggle against terrorism in Pakistan and globally,” said the CTD.

It has been reported that Haq was allegedly plotting a “large-scale terrorism project” in Pakistan.

The CTD has filed charges against the detained terrorist and moved him to a secure location for questioning.

Bin Laden was killed in 2011 during a raid by the United States on his hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

A senior officer from the Pakistani CTD mentioned that a case against Haq has been filed, and an investigation will determine the reason for his presence in Pakistan.

"He was last seen in Afghanistan in 2021. He also holds a Pakistani ID Card with addresses in Lahore and Haripur," Geo News cited the CTD officer.

According to the United Nations Security Council’s website, Haq, born in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan in 1960, was designated a global terrorist in 2001.

PTI seeks probe into outbreak of violence at Bannu march

July 20, 2024

ISLAMABAD: The PTI core committee on Friday strongly condemned the violence in Bannu and “directed” its provincial government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to hold a transparent inquiry and punish those involved in the deaths of innocent people.

At least one person was killed and scores injured when a peace march in Bannu turned violent. However, the party claimed that the death toll was much higher.

The party alleged that the security apparatus had resorted to firing on a peaceful demonstration, staged jointly by almost all political parties in Bannu, opposing a new “operation” against terrorism.

In a statement, the party said it feared that the people’s protest in Bannu could extend to the entire country and would lead to an uncontrollable situation.

HRCP, AWP also voice concern, call for accountability of those responsible for loss of life

“In order to avoid any such situation, a transparent investigation must be carried out and exemplary punishment must be given to those responsible for the violent incident,” said a press release issued by the PTI media cell.

It said all political forces in Bannu were on the same page regarding the eradication of terrorism, but they would not allow any new operation that may claim the lives of innocent people.

The core committee also directed the provincial government to pay handsome compensation to the families of deceased and those injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, the Awami Workers Party (AWP) also condemned what it called “unprovoked” firing on peaceful protestors in Bannu and demanded immediate and exemplary action against the perpetrators.

The party also said that it fully supports the demands for an end to unaccountable wars, military operations and state sponsorship of religious militancy.

In a statement, AWP President Akhtar Hussain has said that AWP has consistently challenged the totalitarian logic of the so-called ‘war on terror’.

He said thousands of innocent people have paid the price for this disastrous state policy in the forms of deaths, displacements and enforced disappearances.

Separately, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) also said it was appalled by reports that a number of protesters had been killed and over 20 injured by firing on peaceful protesters in Bannu, “thousands of whom had assembled to demand an end to militancy and further security operations and to express their long-standing desire for peace and stability in the region”.

This violation of citizens’ right to life and right to freedom of peaceful assembly is reprehensible and reflects a dangerous contempt for citizen-led calls for peace, the commission said.

“The provincial and federal governments must immediately engage with the protesters and their legitimate concerns, and hold to account those responsible for protestors’ deaths and injuries. Moreover, any actions taken to restore law and order in the region must be debated transparently in parliament and account for the rights of those affected.”

Missing persons

Meanwhile, the PTI has urged the Supreme Court (SC) to promptly hear cases related to the recovery of missing persons and put a halt to the ongoing spate of disappearances in the country, which the party claimed was aimed at coercing its affiliates to switch loyalties.

In a statement issued on Friday, a party spokesperson said the case regarding recovery of missing persons — filed by renowned jurist Aitzaz Ahsan before the apex court — be fixed for immediate hearing so as to ensure their earliest release.

The spokesperson said that tactics, including enforced disappearances, framing of fabricated cases, forced divorces and kidnapping for statements to “crush the country’s largest political party and change the loyalties of its supporters”, were being employed.

There is no scope for enforced disappearances or extra-legal measures against citizens in a constitutionally and lawfully governed state, the spokesperson said.

Police Break Up Protest InKarachi Calling For Recovery Of Seven-Year-Old Priya Kumari, Who Had Gone Missing In Sukkur Three Years Ago

July 20, 2024

KARACHI: Police on Friday night allegedly resorted to baton charge to disperse civil society activists at Teen Talwar in Clifton, who were seeking recovery of seven-year-old Priya Kumari, who had gone missing in Sukkur three years ago.

Civil society members showed up in big numbers to protest the failure of the Sindh government and police in recovering Priya Kumari.

Three years ago the child went missing when she was serving free cold drinks at a sabeel on Ashura in Sangrar.

The protesters included representatives of NGOs, unions and groups such as the Pooj Hindu Panchayat Sukkur, Priya Kumari Bazyabi Committee, Women Democratic Front, Minority Rights March, Aurat March, All Lady Health Workers Program, etc.

Many of the protesters had travelled from various parts of Sindh to participate in the demonstration.

Luke Victor, one of the organisers of the protest, told Dawn that the police had resorted to baton charge to disperse the protesters, who included women, and took away around four to five protesters. He claimed that media persons were also beaten.

He also denied the police claim that they had blocked both tracks of main Clifton road. Instead, Mr Victor added that they staged a sit-in at the roundabout of Teen Talwar.

He said water cannons had also been called while a prison van had also arrived.

South-DIG Syed Asad Raza denied “lathi charge”. However, he said that the protesters had blocked the road, causing inconveniences to commuters. And they engaged the protesters to vacate the place.

Another officer, South-SSP Sajid Amir Sadozai, said that while ‘clearing’ the road, one or two people might have been detained.

He added that he was ‘verifying’ it as to whether any person had been detained. However, he also denied “lathi-charge”.

Later in the evening, all those who had been detained were freed, said a south zone police spokesperson.

Earlier at the demonstration, human rights activist and classical dancer Sheema Kermani told Dawn that they had been demanding the child be recovered for the past three years now.

“We want to know why the state authorities are not taking action? The question arises who is complicit in these abductions cases? Who will provide us with safety and security? Who do we turn to if the state is not fulfilling its responsibility? And how do the minority communities get their rights in this country? This is not the Pakistan that Mr Jinnah had promised us,” she said.

Dr Yasmin Kazi said that Priya Kumari’s case is a case of abuse of children and minority rights.

“This child, coming from a Hindu family, was doing a good deed for Muslims at a sabeel with her father. Can anyone imagine what her parents must be going through?” he asked.

Eye surgeon Dr Jaipal Chhabria said that Sukkur, from where the child disappeared, is a small city from where the authorities should have recovered the girl long ago.

“Just find a tough policeman, like Shoaib Suddle, who can stand up to all kinds of pressure, and I’m sure little Priya would be back home,” he said.

General Secretary of Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, Talib Kachchi, said that the government would have recovered Priya if they wanted to.

Laxman Singh, human rights activist from Umarkot, said that there were two Joint Investigative Teams to look into the disappearance, but no JIT report was brought on record so far.

“There have only been rumours that the child is alive but nothing solid. That is because Priya is a daughter of common folk. Had she been associated with anyone powerful, a political will to recover her would have automatically been there,” he said.

Advocate Shiraz Khan questioned the actions of DIG Javed Jiskani, SSPs Tanvir Tunio and Anjad Shaikh under whom the second JIT was made. “Where are their findings?”

Mahesh Kumar from Kashmore said that there was a lack of political will in Priya Kumari’s case.

“This child was an example of interfaith harmony and no one sees that. This is what happened to her,” he regretted.

A student from Karachi University, Uzair Ahmed, said that there were over a hundred cases of forced conversions in Pakistan, which should be punishable by law.

“Laws should also be imposed and implemented and not just created to be forgotten about,” he said.

Pastor Ghazal Shafique reminded that Priya Kumari and her whereabouts have remained unknown since her abduction on August 19, 2021.

“From blaming Priya’s parents and harassing their relatives to making claims of the involvement of ‘gypsies’ in her disappearance, the officials of the government of Sindh and police have made the most outrageous of claims without having shown any concrete progress in tracing and recovering Priya,” she said.

A handout, distributed at the sit-in, read: “We are appalled by the callous statement given by DIG Pir Mohammad Shah, as reported by Dawn on May 31, 2024, that the Sindh police had allegedly found a concrete trace on Priya Kumari and that she would be reunited with her family “soon” — and a similar statement given by Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjhar on June 26, 2024, claiming that Priya’s whereabouts had been traced to Bahawalpur and that she was currently in the custody of gypsies; whereas, after a passage of more than a month, neither the DIG nor any other official has provided any concrete proof to back up their claim of having found Priya. Such callous statements are outrageous and tantamount to making a mockery of the misery and sentiments of the aggrieved parents and all those bearing concern about the fate of Priya.

“We demand the safe recovery of Priya Kumari without further delay and concrete action against all those involved in her abduction and continued illegal confinement. Any more empty claims and promises by the Sindh police and government shall be met with continued peaceful protests and legal recourse through the courts of law till Priya is recovered and reunited with her parents,” the handout concluded.

Protest in Larkana

Simultaneously, a similar protest, organised by the Pooj Hindu Panchayat, was also held in Larkana where members of civil society gathered outside the Dharmashala to observe a token hunger strike and sit-in.

The chairman of Pooj Hindu Panchayat, Haresh Lal; Vice Chairman Jay Raj and others at the sit-in expressed solidarity with the protesters by joining them.

M.B Kalhoro in Larkana also contributed to this story.

Pakistan extends support to Oman in combating terrorism

July 19, 2024

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday offered Pakistan’s support to Oman in the elimination of terrorism in all of its forms.

The statement came after the ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman, Fahad Sulaiman Khalaf Al Kharusi, paid a courtesy call on PM Shehbaz earlier today.

The premier strongly condemned the dastardly terrorist attack on a mosque in the Wadi Kabir district of Muscat on July 16 and appreciated Oman’s swift response and cooperation with the Pakistan mission in the repatriation of the bodies of the deceased and treatment of the injured.

The attack claimed the lives of six people, including four Pakistani nationals, and left over 30 injured, nearly all of whom were Pakistanis.

PM Shehbaz said Pakistan had itself been the victim of terrorism for the past several decades.

During the meeting, the prime minister conveyed his best wishes for Sultan Haitham bin Tariq while recalling his telephonic conversations with the Sultan on Eidul Adha and Eidul Fitr earlier in the year.

The premier also reiterated his invitation to the Sultan of Oman for an official visit to Pakistan at his earliest convenience.

On the bilateral front, PM Shehbaz stressed, saying: "Pakistan and Oman enjoy close, brotherly ties with a shared history, faith and culture."

He expressed Pakistan’s desire to further strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries, particularly in trade, investment, energy, and defence.

In this regard, the premier thanked the ambassador for encouraging a trade and investment delegation that will visit Pakistan next week. He assured the visiting dignitary that the relevant Pakistani authorities would extend full cooperation to the delegation while seeking mutually beneficial outcomes.

The Omani envoy thanked the prime minister for receiving him and conveyed to him the greetings of the Sultan of Oman. He reaffirmed his country’s desire to further enhance its trade and investment relations with Pakistan.

PPP 'shies away' from supporting PML-N govt on PTI ban move

July 19, 2024

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) seems to have won the confidence of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) as the latter has expressed full support for the ruling party's review petition against the Supreme Court's reserved seats ruling, according to sources.

However, with regard to the PML-N's plan to ban the Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and invoke Article 6 of the Constitution against the opposition party leaders, the legal team of the Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari-led party showed its concerns and proposed to further discuss the issue.

The development took place as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held consultations at the President's House on Friday with allied parties over issues including the apex court's 8-5 verdict on reserved seats, sources said, adding that the ruling party took the allies into confidence over its plan to ban the PTI that invited criticism from political leaders belonging to both opposition and ruling parties.

Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Consultant on Legal Affairs in the President Secretariat Irfan Qadir, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema attended the meeting on behalf of the PML-N. From PPP's side, President Asif Ali Zardari, Farook H Naek, Sherry Rehman and Nayyar Bokhari participated in the talks.

During the meeting, the PML-N's key ally extended complete support to the review petition in the apex court over its short order in the reserved seats case announced on July 12, the sources in the PPP said. "However, the party held back from the issue of banning the PTI."

The two main political allies have agreed to further discuss the issue (of imposing the ban on the PTI) on the party level first and then produce the matter before parliament later on, the sources added.

Afterwards, the issue will be presented before the federal cabinet, they said.

The PML-N's legal team took the PPP leaders into confidence over its decisions regarding the Imran Khan-founded party during today's meeting that lasted for one-and-a-half hours.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Awan briefed the meeting about the legalities of the government's plan to ban the PTI, the insiders further said.

However, they said, members of the PPP's legal team voiced their concerns regarding the future impacts of these decisions.

But, the two parties agreed to make all decisions about the PTI with consensus, the sources said, adding that the coalition partners also agreed to continue negotiations in the future as well.

The development comes a week after the top court ruled that the PTI was eligible for the allocation of reserved seats for women and minorities.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah of the SC's full bench announced the 8-5 majority verdict, nullifying the Peshawar High Court's (PHC) order wherein it had upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) decision denying the reserved seats to the SIC.

Following the verdict, the PML-N on Monday filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against its verdict. It nominated 11 respondents in the plea including the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and its chairman Hamid Raza, praying the court to suspend its ruling dated July 12, 2024, on the reserved seats.

The review petition asked a number of questions including whether the SIC should be granted the reserved seats.

It questioned if reserved seats could be granted to a political party that had not submitted a party list within the prescribed time, whether a political party can be given reserved seats whose candidates have not even filed nomination papers within the time provided by the election watchdog and if independents could even join a political party which did not win a single general seat in parliament.

The plea also raised the question if the seats could be left vacant or have to be distributed among the political parties contesting for the said seats.

TLP ends Faizabad sit-in after govt assures of stepping up Gaza aid

July 19, 2024

The Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) on Friday announced an end to its week-long protest in Islamabad after government negotiators reached an understanding with party leaders, calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "terrorist and war criminal".

The government negotiators also accepted another of their demands, assuring that it would ramp up efforts to help out Palestinians, who have been facing Israeli atrocities since the clash began in October last year.

The TLP's decision came this afternoon after the incumbent government engaged them in successful negotiations.

Before the TLP started its protest sit-in at Faizabad Interchange almost a week ago, the party's activists, led by their top leader Saad Rizvi, took out a protest rally from Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi to Faizabad last Saturday.

The TLP, in their demands, asked the PML-N-led government to officially boycott Israeli products and send food and medical aid to Palestinians, especially those suffering from Israel's relentless military aggression in Gaza. One of their demands was that Pakistan’s government declare Israeli PM Netanyahu a “terrorist.”

"The federal government will continue and boost its efforts to help the Muslims of Palestine and the TLP people will assist the government for the purpose," Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah said, flanked by Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and TLP leaders.

"A shipment of goods comprising fruits and medicines weighing more than 1,000 tonnes will be dispatched to Palestine before July 31," Sanaullah said.

He added that Israel emerged as a terrorist state and PM Netanyahu committed war crimes against innocent citizens.

"The Israeli PM is committing war crimes in his personal capacity," the PM's adviser said, adding that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had condemned Israeli atrocities in Palestine during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit held earlier this month in Kazakhstan’s capital of Astana.

The government will push ahead in its condemnation of Israel in the future as well, he said, adding that the government would seek to tap into every resource possible to extend assistance to people in Gaza as well as condemn the Zionist state and its head of government involved in terrorism against innocent Palestinians.

"Netanyahu is a terrorist who has perpetrated war crimes," the former security czar said, calling on the comity of nations to bring the Israeli PM to task.

He ALSO called on world leaders, particularly the Muslim world, to play their due role in the resolution of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Palestine.

In their talks with the TLP leaders, the government negotiators have also decided that the government will boycott the products of Israeli companies and the companies that are directly or indirectly involved in the barbarism being committed in Palestine.

The government also decided to form a committee that will ascertain the details of companies and products that Pakistanis consume without knowing their truth.

The weeklong protest posed serious traffic problems to the residents of the twin cities as the TLP workers in large numbers remained camped at Faizabad Interchange, a main traffic junction linking the two cities.

The sit-in brought vehicular traffic to a complete halt between Murree and Rawalpindi, as well as Peshawar and Lahore. The activists effectively also blocked the Islamabad Expressway, which caused massive gridlocks in the area, leaving commuters facing troubles for hours at a stretch.

Remains of Pakistanis slain in Oman terror attack brought back: PIA

July 19, 2024

KARACHI: A spokesperson for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) confirmed Friday that the bodies of four Pakistanis, who died in a rare attack at a mosque in Muscat, Oman, have been repatriated to Pakistan.

The assault — for which the terrorist organisation Daesh took responsibility and Pakistan labelled as a "dastardly" terror attack — occurred on Monday evening at the Ali bin Abi Talib mosque in the Wadi al-Kabir neighbourhood of Muscat.

The Royal Oman Police said the three gunmen — all Omani nationals — were brothers and "were killed due to their insistence on resisting security personnel". It said that police investigations had indicated the three gunmen were "influenced by misguided ideas".

The six people killed by the gunmen were four Pakistani nationals, an Indian, and a police officer responding to the attack. Twenty-eight others were injured.

In the statement, the PIA said the body of deceased Syed Qaiser had been brought to Karachi and would later be transported to Lahore. Meanwhile, the bodies of Ghulam Abbas and Hasan Abbas have been transported to Islamabad, while Suleman Nawaz's to Lahore.

It was the first known operation claimed by the Daesh group in the sultanate, which is among the most stable countries in the Middle East.

Monday's attack came ahead of Ashura, an annual day of mourning that commemorates the seventh-century martyrdom of Imam Hussain, his family, and companions in the battle of Karbala.

At UN, Pakistan expresses commitment to expand CPEC

July 20, 2024

Pakistan has expressed its commitment to accelerating and expanding CPEC including extending its benefits to Afghanistan for regional peace and security.

Speaking during the UN Security Council debate on cooperation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations in New York, Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Munir Akram maintained that the implementation of connectivity projects between the Central Asia through Afghanistan would contribute immensely to fostering peace and security within Afghanistan and the region.

Munir Akram regretted that the quest for regional hegemony by one large state had undermined the potential of SAARC.

The Ambassador called for enhanced regional integration through adherence to the UN principles. He highlighted that regional and inter-regional initiatives, in collaboration with the UN, are crucial for fostering greater cooperation and understanding in the realms of peace, security and economic development.

Establishing a Sunni Region in Iraq based on Kurdistan's model: Controversy amid political and sectarian divisions

2024-07-19

Shafaq News/ The debate regarding the establishment of a Sunni Arab autonomous region in Iraq's western governorates has resurfaced, fueled by a sense of "marginalization and exclusion," according to supporters of the proposal.

Advocates for the initiative argue that creating such a region is essential to protect their rights and ensure better governance. However, political analysts caution that the necessary conditions for forming this region, including effective leadership, political and security stability, and adequate financial resources, are currently lacking, making the proposal premature despite its constitutional legitimacy.

Is It Constitutional?

The Iraqi constitution allows for the formation of regions based on Article 119, which stipulates that each governorate, or multiple governorates, has the right to form a region upon request through a referendum. The request can be made in two ways: by one-third of the members of each provincial council intending to form the region; and second, by one-tenth of the voters in each of the governorates intending to form the region. This request is then submitted to the Prime Minister's office.

Past-Present Demands

Zina Al-Saab, a political affairs researcher from al-Anbar governorate, told Shafaq News Agency, "The issue of a region in the western governorates was raised years ago in Saladin governorate, where a group of politicians gathered signatures from about 20% of the governorate's population. They submitted a request to Baghdad's government, which ignored it. A subsequent complaint to the Federal Court resulted in Saladin residents winning the right to establish the region. However, the matter has since stalled as those responsible for the referendum have dispersed due to accusations or being bought off."

Al-Saab continued, "Recently, the topic resurfaced with a request submitted to the Iraqi government on February 24, 2024, to form the Central Region, which would include all segments of Iraqi society and maintain Iraq's unity in al-Anbar, Mosul, Diyala, and Saladin governorates. Due to the Iraqi government's lack of response, tribal leaders organized a conference in al-Anbar, and the issue has gained traction on social media and in the news."

She noted that "residents of the western governorates feel marginalized and excluded, unable to control their affairs, prompting them to demand a region to improve their living conditions and governance. This is not necessarily about causing disruption but about citizens' rights to better management and distribution of responsibilities, easing the burden on a government that has failed to govern effectively after transitioning from a simple to a complex state."

Al-Saab highlighted, "Current demands for a region come after ten years of political failure to resolve issues in Sunni governorates. Politicians have used legitimate demands as bargaining chips with their Shiite and Kurdish partners in government formation or as election ploys to deceive displaced and marginalized citizens into voting for them. This includes promises such as passing a general amnesty law, returning displaced persons to their cities like Jurf al-Sakhar and Al-Awja, and finding out the fate of those missing from Saqlawiyah, Al-Razaza, and Jurf al-Sakhar, kidnapped by factions during anti-ISIS operations. Furthermore, politicians have failed to defend properties in Al-Bu'itha, Tarmiyah, and other areas around Baghdad from armed groups control, where they face coercion and threats under terrorism charges if they do not comply."

"All these factors have led to demands for a region to protect rights and lands. Iraqis should support the Sunni governorates in establishing the region as a constitutional right, approved by a majority of Iraqis and recognized by the United Nations as part of Iraq's constitution."

Regional Requirements

Despite these demands, the proposal lacks support from both Shia and even some Sunni political factions. Former Sunni MP Kamil Al-Ghurairi remarked, "The time is not right to establish regions. The situation in Sunni areas is politically unstable, and these regions are demilitarized, with no armed forces present, only groups controlling the situation within the Sunni community."

Al-Ghariri explained to Shafaq News Agency, "Creating a region requires certain conditions currently absent in the Sunni community. One of these is the presence of a leader similar to Masoud Barzani in the Kurdistan Region, who possesses the necessary qualities for leading a region. The Sunni community lacks a single leader and instead has multiple leadership figures."

He added, "Following Mohammed Al-Halbousi's departure from the Speaker of Parliament position, there has been fragmentation among Sunni components, with divisions and conflicts over positions and gains among Sunni politicians. This has led to a lack of unity and an inability to make unified decisions on political, security, and other entitlements, which have been lost due to these internal conflicts. Without agreement among Sunni politicians, the Sunni public, and the provision of necessary conditions for the region, it will not materialize."

Al-Ghurairi pointed out that "establishing a region also requires weapons, funds, and resources, which are not available in Sunni areas. The idea of a region has been proposed by certain tribal leaders within the Sunni community, not by Sunni political factions, as all politicians reject the establishment of a Sunni region."

Political Opposition

Abdul Rahman Al-Jazaeri, a member of the State of Law Coalition, acknowledged that "the Iraqi constitution allows the creation of regions, and the Sunni community has proposed this project. However, its proponents are tribal figures, not political entities. The views of Sunni political groups like al-Hasm, al-Azm, and Taqadum differ from these tribal leaders, as the Sunni community has Shia and Kurdish partners, and there is no consensus on this issue, particularly regarding financial resources and division of shares."

Al-Jazaeri continued, "The State of Law Coalition has not received any formal communication from Sunni political blocs regarding the Sunni region. However, a conference is scheduled for September, with over 100 invitees. Nonetheless, neither the State of Law Coalition nor other partners in the Coordination Framework support this project."

Political analyst Imad Al-Musafir viewed the recent calls for a Sunni region in western areas with suspicion. "These calls come from individuals with a sectarian agenda and a history of sectarianism, from the time of Al-Qaeda to ISIS and the platforms of humiliation in al-Anbar. They committed actions in their regions and then fled Iraq, leaving their people to suffer the consequences of their ill-considered actions."

Al-Musafer, speaking to Shafaq News Agency, stated that "the purpose of these calls is to divide Iraq, and this division is entirely unacceptable. Blood has been shed from various ethnicities to maintain Iraq's unity, so there is a strong rejection of establishing regions based on sectarian lines within Iraq. Iraqi blood has been spilled across the entire Iraqi map."

He concluded, "Southern blood was shed in western areas to liberate them from ISIS, so these sectarian voices are rejected and will not be allowed to find a place in Iraq. The division of Iraq according to their desires and regional and international agendas will not be permitted."

Killing of Gaza girl, 5, may be Israeli war crime: UN experts

July 19, 2024

GENEVA: The death of Hind Rajab, a Palestinian girl whose final appeals for help moved public opinion worldwide, may constitute a war crime, UN experts said on Friday.

“The killing of five-year old Hind Rajab, her family and two paramedics may amount to a war crime,” the experts said in a press statement.

Israeli claims its troops were not in the area at the time were “unacceptable,” they added.

In a statement, the Israeli Embassy in Geneva said that its own army was investigating.

The UN experts said “the absence of proper investigation and accountability” five months after the facts “is deeply troubling and may in itself amount to a violation of the right to life.”

They also referred to “compelling evidence” on where the family’s car was in relation to an Israeli tank “and how it was shot at from very close range using a type of weapon that can only be attributed to the Israeli forces.”

“Audio recordings of calls between Hind and emergency services suggest that she was the only survivor in the car before she was also killed,” the experts added.

The UN experts, while mandated by the Human Rights Council, do not speak in its name.

The Gaza war was triggered by the Oct. 7 attack by militants on southern Israel.

Israel’s military retaliation to wipe out Hamas has killed at least 38,848 people, also mostly civilians, according to data from the Health Ministry in Gaza.

Sunni Iraqi cleric warns of sectarian strife, blames 'shaky' politicians

2024-07-19

Shafaq News/ A prominent Sunni cleric in Baghdad has warned of renewed sectarian strife in Iraq, blaming "shaky" politicians for inciting tensions between the country's Sunni and Shiite communities.

During Friday prayers at the Abu Hanifa al-No'man Mosque in the al-A'azamiyah district, Sheikh Abdul Sattar Abdul Jabbar said that recent rhetoric had raised concerns about a resurgence of sectarian violence.

"In recent times, and specifically in the past two or three months, talk has begun to appear on the horizon of Baghdad and Iraq that could reignite sectarian strife once again," Abdul Jabbar said. "I rule it out, but I do not say it is impossible."

He urged Iraqis to "beware of this sedition that some politicians unfortunately want to use to strengthen their shaky positions," adding that "it is not in the interests of Iraq or Iraqis, it is not in the interests of all of us to be dragged into this sectarian conflict."

The cleric called on all Iraqis to stay away from these tensions and to strive to live in peace and security, explaining that "sedition is of two types: sedition that falls on the oppressor, let it fall, but the one that falls on everyone, everyone pays the price for it. We have tried the latter but were saved by God Almighty. We must beware of that."

Turkiye to send navy to Somalia after agreeing oil and gas search

July 20, 2024

ANKARA: Turkiye is set to send navy support to Somali waters after the two countries agreed Ankara will send an exploration vessel off the coast of Somalia to prospect for oil and gas.

President Tayyip Erdogan submitted a motion to the Turkish parliament late on Friday, seeking authorization for the deployment of Turkish military to Somalia including the country’s territorial waters, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The move came a day after the Turkish energy ministry announced that Turkiye will send an exploration vessel off the coast of Somalia later this year to search for oil and gas as part of a hydrocarbon cooperation deal between two countries.

Earlier this year, Turkiye and Somalia signed a defense and economic cooperation agreement during Somali defense minister’s visit to Ankara.

Turkiye has become a close ally of the Somali government in recent years. Ankara has built schools, hospitals and infrastructure and provided scholarships for Somalis to study in Turkiye.

In 2017, Turkiye opened its biggest overseas military base in Mogadishu. Turkiye also provides training to Somali military and police.

Algeria places pro-democracy activists in pre-trial detention: lawyer

July 20, 2024

ALGIERS: Eight Algerian activists from pro-democracy protests that toppled the country’s last president have been placed in pre-trial detention while six others were released under judicial supervision, one of their lawyers said Friday.

The activists were arrested between July 8 and 15 in Bejaia, some 220 kilometers (136 miles) east of the capital Algiers.

Mira Mokhnache, a university professor and human rights defender, along with seven other activists were placed in pre-trial detention on Thursday by an investigating judge at the Sidi M’Hamed court in downtown Algiers, according to lawyer Fetta Sadat.

The protest movement, known as Hirak, broke out in February 2019 and forced longtime president Abdelaziz Bouteflika to step down two months later.

The movement continued to press for deep reforms, but it waned during the Covid pandemic.

The National Committee for the Release of Detainees (CNLD) said that among the eight convicted was a man who was released from prison last month after three years of imprisonment over ties to the pro-democracy protests.

A 16-year-old whistleblower who documented Algerian political prisons on his Facebook page was among those released under judicial supervision, according to Sadat.

Local media said the group was being prosecuted under a 2021 law amendment relating to “terrorism.”

Last year, a United Nations expert called for the repeal of the article that “broadened the definition of terrorism,” and urged Algerian authorities to pardon people convicted or detained over their involvement in the pro-democracy protests.

UN Special Rapporteur Clement Voule called on Algeria to “address the climate of fear caused by a string of criminal charges.”

Dozens of people are still detained in Algeria over links to Hirak or human rights activism, according to the National Committee for the Release of Detainees.

In February, rights watchdog Amnesty International said that five years after the protests erupted, Algerian authorities had “escalated their repression of peaceful dissent.”

“It is a tragedy that five years after brave Algerians took to the streets in their masses to demand political change and reforms, the authorities have continued to wage a chilling campaign of repression,” said Amnesty’s Middle East and North Africa director, Heba Morayef.

The North African country is readying for presidential elections set to take place on September 7 as the incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune remains its frontrunner.

Israel threatens reprisals for deadly Yemen rebel drone strike

July 20, 2024

TEL AVIV: Israel threatened reprisals Friday after a drone claimed by Yemen’s Houthi rebels penetrated its vaunted air defenses and killed a civilian in a Tel Aviv apartment building near a US embassy annexe.

The attack drew condemnation from UN chief Antonio Guterres and an appeal for “maximum restraint” to avoid “further escalation in the region.”

The pre-dawn strike came hours before Israel suffered another blow, a ruling by the UN’s top court that its occupation of the Palestinian territories was “illegal” and needed to end as soon as possible.

The advisory opinion of The Hague-based International Court of Justice is not binding, but it comes amid mounting international condemnation of Israel’s handling of its war on Hamas in Gaza.

The office of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas hailed the court’s decision as “a victory for justice.” Hamas said it puts “the international system before the imperative of immediate action to end the occupation.”

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has overseen a major expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, insisted: “The Jewish people are not occupiers in their own land.”

The Houthis are one of a number of Iran-backed armed groups around the Middle East that have claimed drone and missile attacks on Israel in retaliation for the Gaza war.

The group, which controls swathes of Yemen, including much of its Red Sea coast, has previously claimed attacks on Israeli cities including Ashdod, Haifa and Eilat, but Friday’s strike appears to be the first to breach Israel’s sophisticated air defenses.

The Houthis fired at Tel Aviv a “new drone called ‘Yafa’, which is capable of bypassing the enemy’s interception systems,” their spokesman Yahya Saree said.

An Israeli military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said a “very big drone that can travel long distances” was used in the 3:12 am (0012 GMT) attack.

He said the drone was detected but due to “human error” the alarm was not raised in time, and it slammed into an apartment building.

Military spokesman Daniel Hagari said Israel believed the drone used was Iranian-made and upgraded so it could reach Tel Aviv from Yemen — at least 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) away.

Medical services said one civilian was killed and four people suffered “relatively minor” injuries.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant vowed revenge.

“The security system will settle the score with all who try to harm the state of Israel, or sends terrorism against it, in a decisive and surprising manner,” he said in comments posted on social media platform X.

In grainy security camera footage, the buzz of what appeared to be the drone was followed by an explosion that shook the building and set off car alarms.

The blast occurred about 100 meters (yards) from a US embassy annexe, said an AFP journalist who saw broken windows along the street lined with apartment blocks.

“It woke me up because the vibration of the sound was like a 747 (jet) coming in,” said Kenneth Davis, an Israeli who was staying in a hotel opposite the building which was hit.

“And then the explosion... everything blew out in the room,” he told AFPTV.

Since November, the Houthis have also carried out dozens of drone and missile attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden that they claim is Israeli-linked.

The United States and Britain launched a campaign of air strikes in January to deter the attacks on shipping.

The Gaza war was triggered by Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel which resulted in the deaths of 1,195 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

The militants also seized 251 hostages, 116 of whom are still in Gaza, including 42 the Israeli military says are dead.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed at least 38,848 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians, according to data from the health ministry in the Hamas-ruled territory, where fighting raged on Friday.

Residents said clashes were heard between Palestinian fighters and the Israeli army, with explosions and shelling in the Tal Al-Hawa district of Gaza City.

The war has destroyed much of Gaza’s housing and other infrastructure, leaving virtually the entire population displaced and short of food and drinking water.

Many are living in unsanitary conditions. Health authorities in Gaza and Israel said on Thursday that poliovirus had been detected in Gaza sewage samples.

The World Health Organization said on Friday that no cases of the highly infectious disease had been discovered in Gaza so far.

Second cycle of rotation nears completion with installation of Sultan Ibrahim as 17th King of Malaysia

20-07- 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia marked a historic milestone today with the installation of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim as the nation’s 17th King, highlighting the distinctive nature of its rotating constitutional monarchy.

Grand Chamberlain of Istana Negara Datuk Azuan Effendy Zairakithnaini highlighted the significance of the installation ceremony at Istana Negara, emphasising Malaysia’s singular status as the sole nation in the world practising this distinctive monarchical system. This event also marks the near completion of the second cycle of rotation among Malaysia’s nine monarchical states, a testament to the nation’s enduring traditions.

Azuan Effendy said that Sultan Ibrahim, who will reign for five years starting this year, is the second last in the current rotation order before Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah if he is elected by the Conference of Rulers.

“Following Sultan Nazrin, the third cycle of rotation will commence. The first rotation saw three rejections to serve as King, but the second round is particularly noteworthy because it strictly follows the established order without any amendments or changes.

“This adherence reflects the strength and mutual understanding among the Rulers. Although they could have opted to alter the rotation, as the arrangement is based on an understanding within the Conference of Rulers, they chose to honour the original sequence without any modifications,” he shared in a recent interview with Bernama.

Azuan Effendy elaborated that the initial selection of the King was predicated on the seniority of the Rulers. Once the first rotation cycle was completed, this established sequence was meticulously adhered to, ensuring continuity and respect for tradition.

According to the rotational convention involving the nine Rulers, the order of succession in the first cycle since 1957 was as follows: Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Perlis, Terengganu, Kedah, Kelantan, Pahang, Johor, and Perak.

In 1994, the rotation entered its second cycle with the installation of the late Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Ja’afar Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman, as the 10th King, marking a new chapter in Malaysia’s rich monarchical history.

The Conference of Rulers employs a secret ballot to determine the next King, taking into account several critical factors, such as the elected Ruler’s willingness to serve and the absence of any mental incapacity.

Additionally, the chosen Ruler must be at the pinnacle of the rotation list, garner the support of at least five other Rulers, and must not have served as King for two consecutive terms, ensuring fairness and adherence to the established order.

Typically, before the election process begins, the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal will first consult with the next Ruler in line to ascertain his readiness and willingness to be elected as King.

Subsequently, the nine Rulers cast a secret vote, and if the Ruler in question garners five votes, he is officially elected as the next King.

This meticulous process is also employed to select the Deputy King, who will fulfil the King’s duties during any absence from the country or due to illness.

Currently, Sultan Nazrin serves as the Deputy King, a role he has diligently performed since 2016 during the reign of Sultan Muhammad V.

Sultan Ibrahim took his oath and signed the instrument of office as the 17th King on Jan 31.

‘Qunut Nazilah’ Should Not Be Used Against Political Rivals - Saifuddin

19-07- 2024

PUTRAJAYA: The recitation of ‘Qunut Nazilah’ should not be used to pray for the destruction of political rivals within the Muslim community, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He emphasised that any form of extremism must be rejected by peace-loving Malaysians.

“During the time of Prophet Muhammad, Qunut Nazilah was recited in situations such as when a group of the Prophet’s companions were treacherously killed at Bi’r Ma’unah. The Prophet prayed Qunut Nazilah for a month to seek Allah’s justice for that act,“he said at a press conference after a post-Cabinet meeting here today.

Saifuddin was referring to the Qunut Nazilah recited by opposition MPs, led by Zulkilfli Ismail (PN-Jasin), yesterday.

The opposition MPs recited Qunut Nazilah after Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal was suspended from attending Dewan Rakyat sessions for six months.

When asked if the government believed the Qunut Nazilah was directed at them, Saifuddin pointed out that the incident occurred in the Dewan Rakyat.

“The incident happened yesterday in Parliament. So, was it directed at Israel in Gaza or what? Reciting Qunut Nazilah immediately after a parliamentary decision because they disagreed with the suspension of an MP, which was decided through parliamentary processes, is an example of extreme political practice.

“This is not an Islamic practice. Therefore, the context and the situation make it clear who the prayer was directed at. I urge Malaysians to view this matter with a clear mind and to understand that political differences should not be equated with differences in faith or belief, especially among Muslims.”

Indonesia condemns Israel's rejection of a Palestinian state

July 19, 2024

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has strongly condemned the resolution rejecting the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state adopted by the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, on Thursday.

According to a statement issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry on Friday, Israel's decision effectively undermines efforts to realize the two-state solution to resolve the decades-long Israel-Palestine conflict.

"The two-state solution remains the only viable path to peace in Palestine and in the region," the ministry said via social media.

The ministry also affirmed that Indonesia remains committed to the implementation of the two-state solution.

The resolution rejecting Palestinian statehood was approved overwhelmingly by Knesset members with a 68-9 vote. It was passed ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington D.C. to meet President Joe Biden and address the US Congress.

The resolution declared that the establishment of a Palestinian state "in the heart of the Land of Israel" would pose an "existential danger to the State of Israel and its citizens."

The international community was swift to condemn the Israeli parliament's move.

The United Nations (UN) declared that the two-state solution "cannot be voted away." Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, through UN spokesperson, Stephan Dujarric, expressed his disappointment with the Israeli legislation.

"It's clear you cannot vote away the two-state solution," Dujarric told reporters.

Meanwhile, US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said that the two-state solution, under which Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side, is the "only future" for resolving the decades-long conflict.

"Without that, peace will be nearly impossible to achieve," she emphasized.

The French, Turkey, and Jordan governments also condemned the resolution. They affirmed that the two-state solution is the only way to forge peace between Israel and Palestine.

Indonesia Eyes Global Nickel Market Domination with UAE Partnership

July 19, 2024

Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is confident that Indonesia can dominate up to 85 percent of the global nickel market through a partnership with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

President Jokowi held a bilateral meeting with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ) at Qasr Al Watan, Abu Dhabi, on Wednesday.

The discussions included comprehensive cooperation in nickel trade, covering all sectors from mining to the production of electric vehicles and their batteries.

"If this succeeds, we expect to control 80 to 85 percent of the global market," President Jokowi said during the opening of the 2024 President’s Cup in Bandung, West Java, on Friday.

He also mentioned that the government is engaging in similar discussions with two other countries.

"There are two more countries that we are approaching," Jokowi added.

In addition to nickel trade cooperation, President Jokowi discussed establishing a financial center in the new capital, Nusantara (IKN), during his visit.

Indonesia plans to study and replicate the system managed by the Dubai International Financial Center Authority.

"We have signed an MoU, meaning we expect the financial center in IKN to be established and operational soon," he concluded.

Indonesia has stopped exporting unprocessed nickel to encourage domestic processing. The government hopes this ban will attract foreign businesses to set up factories in Indonesia. According to the 2024 US Geological Survey report, Indonesia has the world’s largest nickel reserves, totaling 55 million metric tons.

Earlier this month, Indonesia launched Southeast Asia’s first and largest EV battery cell plant in Karawang, West Java. This project is part of HLI Green Power, a joint venture by South Korean automaker Hyundai, Seoul-based battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution, and local firm Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC). Hyundai is also producing its EV model Ioniq 5 at its Cikarang manufacturing plant.

Kenya: Court suspends police ban on protests in Nairobi

A Kenyan court on Thursday (Jul. 18) halted a police ban on protests in the capital.

The Milimani law courts ruled the ban remains suspended pending the hearing and determination of a petition filed by a Kenyan NGO challenging the police directive.

On Wednesday (Jul. 17) the acting police inspector general banned protests in Nairobi's central district (CBD) and surroundings indefinitely citing a lack of leadership that would ensure peaceful protests.

The suspension came before a planned demonstration, in which protestors were expected to march to the president’s office.

Police were heavily deployed around the CBD patrolling the streets, Thursday (Jul. 18). Major roads leading to the president’s office were cordoned off.

Kenya's capital has been the heart of the youth-led protests, which have also taken place across the country.

Police have been accused of shooting dead protestors forcing Japheth Koome, the former inspector general to resign.

Kenyan police arrest two more suspects in a serial murder case

Kenyan authorities have arrested two more individuals in the ongoing investigation into the Mukuru case, where a suspected serial killer has confessed to the murders of 42 women. This follows the arrest of the primary suspect on Monday, who the police believe is responsible for the serial killings.

On Tuesday, police apprehended Amos Momanyi Mogusu outside a bar in Nairobi. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mogusu was tracked down using the mobile phone of one of the victims, Roselyn Akoth, found in his possession.

The second arrest involved Moses Ogembo, a resident of Mukuru, who sold the phone to Mogusu. During a search of Ogembo’s residence, investigators discovered 154 mobile phones. Under questioning, Ogembo admitted to purchasing several second-hand smartphones from Collins Jumaishi Kalusha, the primary suspect in this case.

In a statement, the DCI reported finding additional incriminating evidence in Kalusha’s apartment, including a blood-stained pillowcase, a t-shirt, and various tools such as a hammer, pliers, knives, and scissors.

Despite initially confessing, Kalusha has since retracted his statements. During a Wednesday hearing at the Makadara Court to determine his pre-trial detention, Kalusha’s lawyer argued that the confessions were obtained under torture. Nevertheless, the judge extended Kalusha’s detention by 28 days.

Addressing public concerns, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura clarified that the bodies found in a quarry are unrelated to recent protests. Mwaura emphasized that the 10 bodies discovered in Kware are linked to femicides, not political killings, countering suspicions from civil society groups following the case.
