Islamic Text Desecrated During Anti-Pakistan Protest In UP’s Prayagraj

May 8, 2025

Islamic text desecrated during anti-Pakistan protest in UP's Prayagraj.

------------

In a disturbing incident that has sparked nationwide outrage, a group of protestors in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, were seen walking over papers bearing Islamic inscriptions during an anti-Pakistan demonstration.

The protestors, shouting slogans such as “Pakistan Murdabad,” reportedly placed printouts of the Pakistani flag and what appeared to be the Saudi Arabian flag on the ground. The Saudi flag features the Islamic declaration of faith, or Kalma, inscribed in Arabic, along with a sword symbol on a green background.

Videos circulating online show demonstrators trampling the flags, with many viewers identifying Islamic text among the printed materials. In another video, a man is seen picking up some of the inscriptions from the ground while leaving behind the Pakistani flags, though it is unclear if this footage is from the same location. The incident has drawn strong condemnation from Muslim communities across India, who view the act as deeply disrespectful to their faith.

This development comes in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left at least 26 people dead, including local residents and international tourists.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a group linked to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, initially claimed responsibility before retracting the statement. The Indian government has held Pakistan accountable, escalating diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

In retaliation, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, expelled Pakistani diplomats, canceled existing visas for Pakistani citizens, and closed border crossings. In turn, Pakistan rejected the accusations, suspended the Simla Agreement, expelled Indian diplomats, and closed its airspace to Indian aircraft.

On May 6, India launched “Operation Sindoor,” targeting suspected terror infrastructure in nine locations across Pakistan’s Punjab province. Pakistan claimed the strikes killed 26 civilians and injured 46, calling it an act of war. In response, Pakistan initiated retaliatory military actions, leading to continued skirmishes along the Line of Control.

The international community has expressed grave concern, urging both nuclear-armed nations to exercise restraint and seek diplomatic solutions to avoid further escalation. — With Agencies Inputs

Operation Sindoor: Karnataka Calls For Special Prayers this Friday In Mosques For Armed Forces

May 09, 2025

Minority Welfare Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan announced that Jumma (Friday) prayers will be observed in all mosques.(X/Zameer Ahmed Khan)

-------------

In a gesture of solidarity with the Indian Armed Forces engaged in Operation Sindoor, the Karnataka government has directed mosques across the state to offer special prayers this Friday, India Today reported.

The move comes days after similar rituals were held in temples, underscoring a broader effort to unite communities in support of national security personnel.

Minority Welfare Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan announced that Jumma (Friday) prayers will be observed in all mosques, including those managed by the Karnataka State Waqf Board, with intentions focused on the safety, strength, and success of India’s military.

“These prayers are not only a tribute to our brave soldiers but also a collective expression of our hopes and blessings for their mission,” Minister Khan said, as reported by India Today. He also confirmed that he has formally written to the Chief Executive Officer of the Waqf Board, instructing that the prayers be conducted in all applicable mosques.

This announcement follows an earlier directive issued by the Muzrai Department, which called for special pujas in government temples across Karnataka on May 8. Those ceremonies were held on behalf of the Indian Army, invoking divine protection and blessings for the security personnel involved in Operation Sindoor.

Temples were guided to carry out the rituals “with solemnity and devotion,” offering prayers specifically in the name of the soldiers deployed. That initiative was led by Minister for Transport and Muzrai, Ramalinga Reddy.

'Tiranga Yatre' in Bengaluru

In a symbolic gesture backing the Indian Armed Forces’ Operation Sindoor—a military response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack, Bengaluru is set to host a large-scale ‘Tiranga Yatre’ (flag march) this Friday.

The march is being organised by the Bruhat Bengaluru MahanagaraPalike (BBMP).

The rally will commence at KR Circle and proceed towards the Chinnaswamy Stadium, drawing participation from several senior leaders.

The event is being positioned as a show of unity and patriotism, reflecting public backing for the armed forces following their counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir. According to Deccan Herald, BBMP officials have issued instructions for all staff and officers to be present at KR Circle by 9 a.m. on the day of the event.

Full Text Of Pope Leo XIV’s First Address

May 9, 2025

By EnioluwaAdeniyi

The newly elected Pope, Leo XIV, on Thursday, gave his first address from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, shortly after being elected as the new head of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.

The identity of the new leader of the Catholic Church, replacing the late Pope Francis, was revealed on Thursday evening.

The selection of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Pope was confirmed when white smoke rose above the Sistine Chapel, signalling the conclusion of the papal conclave.

Here is a translation of the speech, which was delivered in Italian with one part in Spanish.

The full text reads, “May peace be with you all.

“Beloved brothers and sisters. This is the first greeting of the risen Christ, the Good Shepherd, who gave his life for God.

“I, too, would like this greeting of peace to enter your hearts, to reach your families, to all people, wherever they may be, to all peoples, to all the earth.

“May peace be with you.

“May peace be with you all, brothers and sisters.

“May peace be with you all, reach out to all your families, to all peoples, to all. This is the peace of the risen Christ, a disarmed and disarming peace, humble and persevering.

“It comes from God, God who loves us all, unconditionally.

“We still have in our ears that faint but always courageous voice of Pope Francis blessing Rome.

“We have that voice fresh in our ears, in our hearts, hearing the voice of the pope blessing Rome, the people, giving his blessing to the world, to the whole world, that Easter morning.

“Allow me follow up that same blessing.

“God loves us, God loves you all, and evil will not prevail. We are all in God’s hands.

“Therefore, without fear, united, hand in hand with God and with each other, let us go forward.

“We are disciples of Christ, Christ walks ahead of us, the world needs His light.

“Humanity needs Him as the bridge to be reached by God and His love.

“You too help us, then each other, to build bridges, with dialogue, with encounter, to be one people always at peace.

“Thank you Pope Francis.

“I also want to thank all my brother cardinals who have chosen me to be the successor of Peter and to walk together with you as a united Church, always seeking peace and justice, always seeking to work as men and women faithful to Jesus Christ, without fear, to proclaim the Gospel, to be missionaries.

“I am a son of St Augustine, an Augustinian, who said, “With you I am a Christian and for you a bishop”.

“In this sense, we can all walk together towards that homeland that God prepared for us.

“To the Church of Rome, a special greeting.

“We must seek together how to be a missionary Church, a Church that builds bridges, a dialogue, always open to receive, like this square with open arms, everyone who needs our charity, our presence, dialogue and love.

“And now a greeting in Spanish, please allow me.

“A greeting to all and in particular to my dear diocese of Chiclayo, in Peru, where a faithful people have accompanied their bishop, have shared their faith and have given so much, so much to continue to be the faithful Church of Jesus Christ.

“To all of you, brothers and sisters of Rome, of Italy, of the whole world, we want to be a synodal Church, a Church that walks, a Church that always seeks peace, that always seeks charity, that always seeks to be close, especially to those who suffer.

“Today, the day of supplication to Our Lady of Pompei, our Mother Mary always wants to walk with us, to be close, to help us with her intercession and her love.

“Now I would like to pray with you for this new mission, for the whole Church, for peace in the world.

“Let us ask for this special grace of Mary, our Mother.

“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

“Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy sign, Jesus.

“Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners.

“Now, at the hour of our death, amen.

“Amen.”

Bangladesh: Chief Organiser Of NCP Calls For Mass Rally After Juma Prayers Demanding AL Ban

May 9, 2025

----------

Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser (southern region) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), called for a mass rally near the Chief Adviser's residence at the state guest house Jamuna after Juma prayers today, demanding a ban on the Awami League.

He also urged people from all political affiliations to join the demonstration.

The announcement came during an ongoing protest programme that began around 10:00pm last night in front of Jamuna in the capital.

Hasnat said, "We suspect the interim government is allowing the fascist Awami League to reorganise."

"We expected the interim government's first reform to be the banning of the Awami League as a terrorist organisation. But we have not seen any visible action. Rather, we have information that several advisers have no intention of doing so," he added.

"There will be a sea of people after Friday prayers. Today, they will understand who truly wants the Awami League banned," he added.

Hasnat said they would not leave the site until the Awami League is declared a "terrorist organisation" and its registration revoked.

The protest, which drew participants from various groups, saw leaders and activists from Jamaat-e-Islami join the demonstration around 8:00am, led by Shafiqul Islam Masud, secretary of the party's Dhaka South unit.

Speaking at the program, Shafiqul Islam Masud said the interim government was brought to power by the students and the masses through sacrifice and now those very students and people are demanding that AL be banned. He urged the government to consult all political parties and ban the AL before noon today.

Members of Hefazat-e-Islam, AB Party, and Islami Chhatra Shibir also joined the demonstration continuing with slogans.

Law enforcement agencies, including police, Rab, and the army, have been deployed to ensure security.

Palestinian president, Gazans call on Leo XIV to pursue late pope’s ‘peace efforts’

------------

RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories/CAIRO: Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, along with Gaza's Christians and Hamas leadership are calling on the new Pope Leo XIV to pursue the “peace efforts” of his predecessor Francis.

Abbas sent “best wishes for the success of Pope Leo XIV in the pursuit of his noble task and maintaining the legacy of the late Pope Francis,” said in a statement released by his office late Thursday after the Vatican announced the election of a new pope.

Cardinal Robert Prevost, a little known missionary from Chicago, was elected in a surprise choice to be the new head of the Catholic Church, becoming the first US pope and taking the name Leo XIV.

Abbas highlighted the “importance of the moral, religious and political role of the Vatican in the defense of just causes,” adding that “the Palestinian people and their right to liberty and independence” should be at the top.

In Gaza, the enclave’s tiny Christian community said that they were happy about the election of a new leader of the Catholic Church. They also expressed confidence he would give importance to the war-torn enclave like his predecessor Pope Francis did.

“We are happy about the election of the Pope ... We hope that his heart will remain with Gaza like Pope Francis,” George Antone, 44, head of the emergency committee at the Holy Family Church in Gaza, told Reuters.

The late Pope Francis, who campaigned for peace for the devastated enclave, called the church hours after the war in Gaza began in October 2023, the start of what the Vatican News Service would describe as a nightly routine throughout the war.

“We appeal to the new pope to look at Gaza through the eyes of Pope Francis and to feel it with the heart of Pope Francis. At the same time, we are confident that the new pope will give importance to Gaza and its peace,” Antone added.

War in Gaza erupted when Hamas militants launched an attack against southern Israel, in which 251 people were taken hostage and some 1,200 were killed, according to Israeli tallies.

Since the abductions, Israel has responded with an air and ground assault on Gaza that has killed more than 52,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health authorities there, and reduced much of Gaza to ruins.

Hamas, in a statement, congratulated Pope Leo saying that it looked forward to “his continuation of the late Pope’s path in supporting the oppressed and rejecting the genocide in Gaza.”

The Holy Family Church compound in Gaza houses 450 Christians as well as a shelter for the elderly and children that also accommodates 30 Muslims, Antone said.

Gaza’s 2.3 million population comprises an estimated 1,000 Christians, mostly Greek Orthodox.

Right-Wing Ecosystem Communalise Poonch Tragedy: Slain Madrasa Teacher Shown As ‘PoK Terror Mastermind’

Muzaffar Raina

09.05.25

Poonch district of Jammu has borne the brunt of Pakistan’s relentless shelling, but locals are not bleeding from the cannons of the enemy only — government and media “apathy” is said to be hurting them most.

Residents of Poonch, where 13 civilians have died, claimed that the Centre and the Union Territory administration have turned a cold shoulder to their pain. They are equally wary of alleged efforts by the Right-wing ecosystem to communalise their tragedy.

A grieving family of Qari Iqbal Mohammad, a teacher at a local madrasa who was one of the 13 victims, epitomises their ordeal.

The family, including Iqbal’s two young daughters, has been mourning his death since Wednesday but had to keep aside their grief the next day to rebuff allegations that he was a “terror mastermind” killed in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in Wednesday’s strikes by India.

Several Delhi-based TV channels flashed the news, showing his picture prominently.

“We were already grieving, but they have added to our pain. We condemn such representation,” Iqbal’s brother Qari Mohammad Farooq, accompanied by the cleric’s two daughters and other locals, said in a video.

Among many who expressed outrage was local BJP leader and former minister Choudhary Zulfikar, who asked the “national media to behave responsibly”.

Poonch police had to step in to refute “such false narratives”.

“The deceased, MoulanaMohd Iqbal, was a respected religious figure in the local community and had no affiliation with any terror group. Misreporting of such incidents not only causes unnecessary panic but also disrespects the deceased and the sentiments of the bereaved family.”

Local journalist Zamarrud Mughal, who flagged the issue, said Iqbal’s fault was probably that he had a beard and wore a cap.

“Pakistani shelling has snuffed out lives and destroyed homes here but such portrayal was no less painful,” Zamarrud, who has a doctorate from Jamia Millia Islamia, told The Telegraph.

“Based on just a beard or cap, the media sitting in Delhi decides whether you are from India or Pakistan.”

Zamarrud said the incident was not their only concern. He said most residents had migrated to safer places and were largely left to their own means, with the administration offering little help.

“Eleven victims were from the town alone. There were many injured. Our hospital was flooded by patients, but there were no senior doctors. There were no government vehicles to shift people to safer areas. People with no transport facility could be seen walking on foot. Transporters charged exorbitant prices,” he said, adding: “Some ministers and officers visited the district on Thursday after an outcry.”

Locals said the national media’s coverage of their tragedy pales in comparison with the coverage of the Pahalgam terror attack. To the contrary, they said, there were efforts to communalise the situation.

BJP leader Zulfkar said the media coverage of the Poonch killings had been “very poor”, suggesting there was a need to empathise with people.

Several pro-BJP handles tried to give it a communal colour and suggested Sikhs were singled out for the attacks by Pakistan, with an obvious aim to train guns on pro-Khalistan elements.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Narendra Singh, however, said it was an attack on the entire town and people were targeted irrespective of their faith.

“Such reports are not true. Eight of the 13 victims were Muslims, four were Sikhs and one, a small boy, was a Hindu. I found people alleging that our main gurdwara was attacked. There was no direct attack on the main building. A portion of an extension was hit, which caused some damageto its windows, but its walls are intact.

“If they intended to target gurdwaras, there were two more with bigger domes that were easy to target. They were not harmed. The four Sikh victims died in their home and not in the gurdwara. At the same time, a madrasa teacher was also killed. The shelling was random and anybody could have been hit,” he said.

Pakistani shells have wrecked families and residences, emptying most of Poonch town and many villages where people have fled to safer areas. Shelling continued for hours in the morning, but there was some respite in the afternoon.

The shelling has shattered the calm of Poonch town, home to some 40,000 people, which has rarely been attacked in the past despite its proximity to the LoC.

In 1947, it offered refuge to people, mostly Sikhs and Hindus, fleeing PoK in the wake of tribal raids and many more joined them over the decades from villages nearby to escape artillery duels between the two countries.

“The town was for decades a haven for people. Sadly, the town has lost its peace. We have not seen such shelling in decades,” Poonch resident Zaffar Mehdi, a postgraduate student in Jamia Millia Islamia, said.

Officials said the ceasefire violations were reported on Wednesday night and Thursday in the border areas of Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch and Jammu’s Akhnoor.

Operation Sindoor: Satellite Imagery By US Space Tech Firm Shows Destroyed Terror Infrastructure In Pakistan

08 May, 2025

New Delhi: Satellite imagery released by Maxar Technologies and accessed by Reuters, has provided stark visual evidence of the destroyed terror infrastructure in Pakistan’s Bahawalpur and Muridke caused by India’s precision missile strikes, carried out under ‘Operation Sindoor’ in the early hours of Wednesday.

The strikes, targeting key strongholds of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), were launched in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists.

Before-and-after satellite images of the Jamia Masjid Subhan Allah in Bahawalpur, the operational headquarters of JeM, show significant damage.

Before:

Pre-strike images depict an intact mosque and surrounding structures, with post-strike visuals revealing gaping holes in the mosque’s dome, widespread debris, and collapsed buildings.

After:

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi of the Indian Army, during a press briefing on the operation on Wednesday, confirmed the destruction of the Markaz Subhanallah in Bahawalpur, located 100 km inside Pakistan, stating, “It was the headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammed, targeted by Indian Armed Forces.”

Markaz Subhan Allah, Bahawalpur, operational since 2015, is the main centre of Jem for training and indoctrination and serves as the operational headquarters of JeM. It is associated with terrorist planning by JeM, including the Pulwama attack on February 14, 2019.

The Markaz consists of residences of JeM Chief Maulana Masood Azhar, de facto Chief of JeM Mufti Abdul Rauf Asghar, Maulana Ammar and other family members of Masood Azhar. Masood Azhar has made several addresses from this facility, extolling anti-India rhetoric and appealing to youth to join Islamic Jihad. JeM conducts regular arms, physical and religious training for its cadres at Markaz Subhan Allah.

Similarly, satellite imagery of Muridke, a hub of LeT, shows the aftermath of strikes on Markaz Taiba. Pre-strike images display a sprawling complex with multiple buildings, while post-strike visuals reveal extensive structural damage.

Markaz Taiba, Muridke, established in the year 2000, is the ‘alma mater’ and the most important training centre of LeT in Pakistan. The complex holds arms and physical training facilities, as well as dawa’h and radicalisation for terror entities, both from within Pakistan and abroad.

This Markaz enrols around 1000 students in different courses annually, highlighting the role of this Markaz in churning out terror entities for LeT annually.

Pointing to Markaz Taiba in Muridke, Colonel Qureshi, during the briefing, said that the complex was 18-25 km inside Pakistan and that “those involved in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks trained here, including Ajmal Kasab and David Headley”.

Osama Bin Laden had financed Rs 10 million to construct a Mosque and Guest House within the complex.

AIMPLB Calls For ‘Dialogue’ Between India And Pakistan: ‘War Not A Solution’

by Lalmani Verma

May 9, 2025

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) urged India and Pakistan to resolve the ongoing conflict through dialogue and said the two nuclear powers could not “afford a war”.

In a special online meeting of its office bearers on Thursday, a day after Operation Sindoor, the AIMPLB passed a resolution expressing “great concern” on the increasing tension on the India-Pakistan border.

The body said it supported “every necessary step taken for the defence and protection of the nation and its people” and added that “the public, political parties, armed forces, and the government” must come together at this moment.

“Terrorism and the killing of innocent civilians is a grave concern. There is absolutely no place for terrorism in Islamic teachings, globally recognised principles, and human values. Therefore, countries should resolve their matters through bilateral dialogues and discussions. War is not a solution to any issue. Especially in the presence of nuclear weapons, India and Pakistan cannot afford a war,” the body’s resolution said.

The AIMPLB board said a conflict between the two countries “could plunge the people of both nations into insurmountable difficulties and suffering”.

While it would continue its campaign against the Waqf Act, the AIMPLB said it has put on halt all its meetings and events until May 16.

Indoor programmes, roundtable meetings, mosque sermons, and press conferences will continue as scheduled.

The AIMPLB has been among the strongest opponents of the Waqf Act and has been undertaking a “Save Waqf” campaign across the country. The first phase of the campaign is set to conclude on July 13 at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi.

BSF foils infiltration bid in Jammu, kills seven terrorists, destroys Pakistan Rangers post

09.05.25

The Border Security Force on Friday said it has killed seven terrorists who were trying to infiltrate from across the India-Pakistan International Border in Jammu, and also destroyed a Rangers post.

The incident took place in the Samba sector on the intervening night of May 8-9 after a "big group" of terrorists was detected by the surveillance grid.

This infiltration bid was supported by fire from Pakistan Rangers post Dhandhar, a BSF spokesperson said.

He said the troops neutralised the infiltration bid, killing at least seven terrorists and caused extensive damage to the Dhandhar post It also shared a thermal imager clip of the destruction of the said post.

The force is on high alert in the wake of the current hostilities between the two countries following the Pahalgam terrorist attack of April 22 and India's strike on terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation.

Suspected bomb in Jaisalmer, missile debris in Punjab discovered amid Indo-Pak tensions

09.05.25

Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, two separate incidents involving suspicious aerial debris have heightened security concerns across the country.

On Friday morning, a bomb-like object was discovered near a nursery in the Kishanghat area of Rajasthan's Jaisalmer district. The object, found in front of the Jogis’ colony under the Kotwali police station limits, prompted an immediate response from local authorities. Kotwali SHO Prem Daan stated that the object resembled a bomb, though it remains unclear whether it is live or defused. Army experts have been dispatched to the site for inspection and possible defusal.

The alert was raised by a local resident, Arjun Nath, who informed the Sarpanch’s representative, Kalyan Ram. The Indian Air Force and local police swiftly cordoned off the area and launched an investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the object may be part of a drone launched by Pakistan around 10:30 PM on Thursday, but official confirmation is still awaited.

In a related incident, missile-like debris was found in fields near Kamahi Devi village in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district on Thursday evening. According to Hoshiarpur Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Mukesh Kumar, the metallic debris appeared to be from a missile, prompting immediate action from the police, who then involved the Indian Air Force. The debris was secured and taken for further investigation.

These incidents occurred as India remains on high alert following a series of attempted attacks by Pakistan using drones and missiles on military installations in Jammu, Pathankot, Udhampur, and other strategic locations late Thursday night. Indian forces successfully neutralized these threats. In response, the Ministry of Defence emphasized that India is "fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and ensure the safety of its people."

A precautionary blackout was enforced in several cities, including Pathankot, Mohali, Jalandhar, Amritsar, and Hoshiarpur. Authorities across affected regions have urged residents to remain calm and adhere to safety protocols as investigations continue and security measures are intensified.

Winds of war: Pakistan targets Jammu, Pathankot in missile and drone strikes; Indian forces foil attack

Muzaffar Raina

Pakistan targeted military installations in Jammu, Udhampur and Pathankot with missiles and drones on Thursday night but the threat was neutralised by Indian air defence systems, the army said.

Authorities cut off electricity across Jammu and Kashmir and there was some measure of anxiety among Jammu city residents.

A Pakistan Air Force pilot is said to have been captured by Indian security forces in Pathankot after he ejected from his fighter jet on Thursday night. There is however no official confirmation yet.

News agency ANI said: “A Pakistani Air Force jet has been shot down in the Pathankot sector by Indian air defence. More details awaited. Official government confirmation awaited.”

The headquarters of the Integrated Defence Staff posted on X: “International Boundary in Jammu & Kashmir targeted by Pakistan using missiles and drones. No losses. Threat neutralised by #IndianArmedForces as per SoP with kinetic & non-kinetic means.”

“Kinetic means” refers to the use of missiles, gunfire and conventional weapons while “non-kinetic means” denotes measures such as the jamming of communications and cyber attacks.

Earlier in the day, India had struck military targets inside Pakistan with drones.

Colonel SuneelBartwal, defence spokesman in Jammu, said no casualties or material losses had been reported.

“Military stations at Jammu, Pathankot & Udhampur were targeted by Pakistani-origin #drones and missiles along the International Border in J&K today,” he wrote on X.

“India remains fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and ensure the safety of its people.”

Flashes lit up Jammu’s skies late in the evening, followed by explosions in the air, suggesting Indian interceptions of the Pakistani barrage.

Official sources said the missile-like projectiles were aimed at key installations, including Jammu airport and places such as Samba, R.S. Pura and Arnia.

There were no reports of these missiles or drones making any impact at any of these sites till late in the night.

“The projectiles were successfully intercepted. Jammu city was put on high alert after the attack. Our air defence system took timely action and shot down several drones midair,” an official said.

Although multiple projectiles were seen in the sky from different places in Jammu city, residents said there were no indications of a major attack.

A former police officer in Jammu said the attack seemed to have the objective of causing panic rather than casualties.

Jammu activist R.L. Kalsotra said he was sitting on the balcony of his home when he noticed flashes of light in the sky.

“Sometime later I could see some interceptions in the air. There were only minor explosions,” he said.

Panic gripped some residents and the authorities shut off power, leading to a blackout. Authorities in Srinagar too shut off power although there were no reports of any attack on the city till late at night.

A government official said people had been advised to stay indoors and follow standard operating procedures. Jammu city was put on high alert.

Jammu-based lawyer Deepika Pushkar Nath wrote that missiles were flying “over our houses in Jammu RIGHT NOW”.

“This is not hearsay, I’m witnessing and recording it myself. The threat is real. Civilian lives are at stake,” she wrote.

The attack coincided with heavy shelling from Pakistan on the border areas of Kashmir.

Jaisalmer explosions

Sounds of massive explosions were heard in Jaisalmer and a blackout was enforced in western Rajasthan districts bordering Pakistan, plunging the whole stretch into darkness, police said.

A top official confirmed a massive sound was heard in Jaisalmer. After a brief lull, the sound of explosions continued for nearly an hour.

Punjab blackout

A blackout was enforced in several districts including Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur and Mohali in Punjab and the Union Territory of Chandigarh on Thursday evening, officials said.

Coimbatore youth booked for posting hand gesture used by Islamic State militants

May 08, 2025

The police on Wednesday booked a youth from Coimbatore, who posted an image of a raised index finger, which is a hand gesture widely used by Islamic State (IS) militants for propaganda, on Instagram.

The police, who launched a detailed investigation, are also analysing electronic gadgets used by the youth, identified as Askar Ali, 21, from Selvapuram.

Ali was booked by the Selvapuram police for offences under Sections 196 (1) (a) (promoting disharmony or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different religious, racial, language or regional groups or castes or communities through electronic communication) and 353 (1)(c) (statements conducing to public mischief-with intent to incite, or which is likely to incite, any class or community of persons to commit any offence against any other class or community) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The case was registered based on a complaint registered by a sub-inspector attached to the Selvapuram police station, who found posts on Ali’s Instagram account, which could promote radical thoughts among Muslim youths. One of the posts was an image of a raised index finger, which IS militants often use as a symbol of their cause, the police said.

The police added that Ali also posted content promoting radical ideologies on Instagram and a WhatsApp group, namely AllahvinAdiyargal (Servants of Allah).

India blocks social media accounts of news outlets Maktoob Media, The Kashmiriyat, two others

Scroll Staff

May 08, 2025

India has blocked the social media accounts of at least four news portals – Maktoob Media, The Kashmiriyat, Free Press Kashmir and the United States-based Muslim – amid escalating geopolitical tensions with Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack.

The accounts were blocked in response to legal demands by the Indian government, said social media platforms X and Instagram.

The accounts of Maktoob Media, Free Press Kashmir and The Kashmiriyat have been blocked on X, while that of Muslim has been blocked on Instagram.

The websites for all three portals are still accessible in India.

When the page for Muslim is sought to be accessed from India, Instagram displays the message: “Account not available in India. This is because we complied with a legal request to restrict this content.”

X also said that the accounts of Maktoob Media, Free Press Kashmir and The Kashmiriyat were withheld in India in response to legal demands.

Maktoob Media, Free Press Kashmir and The Kashmiriyat are among Indian platforms that have in recent years sought to provide Muslim and Kashmiri perspectives on news in the context of the rising influence of Hindutva.

The news platform Muslim describes itself as “an independent media platform delivering Muslim news, stories and coverage to our Ummah [global Muslim community]” and has around 6.7 million followers on Instagram, AFP reported.

AslahKayyalakkath, the editor of Maktoob Media said the portal has “no knowledge of the reason for the government’s arbitrary action”.

“It is an assault on press freedom,” Kayyalakkath added in a statement on X. “Maktoob pledges to continue its crucial work at a time when truth is becoming a casualty.”

Condemning the blocking of its X account, The Kashmiriyat’s editorial team said “this feels like an erasure of years of work, of the countless hours we poured into honest, often difficult journalism”.

“To be silenced without warning – hurts, deeply,” the statement on Instagram added.

Ameer-Al-Khatahtbeh, the founder of Muslim, said that the blocking of the platform’s Instagram account in India was “detrimental” at a time when the Western and legacy media were failing to represent Muslims accurately.

Meta, the company that owns Instagram, is yet to comment on blocking Muslim. A spokesperson of the company referred AFP to a webpage that details its policy on limiting content when governments view certain material on its platforms as “against local law”.

This development comes amid social media accounts of various Pakistani politicians, actors and cricketers being banned in India, like those of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto and singer Abida Parveen.

On April 28, the Union government also banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels, accusing them of spreading misinformation and content that could incite communal tension. The banned platforms included major news outlets such as Dawn News, Samaa TV and Geo News.

On Wednesday, the Indian military carried out strikes on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Nine sites were targeted under Operation Sindoor.

The Pakistan Army retaliated by shelling Indian villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Sixteen persons were killed in the firing, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The terror attack at the Baisaran area near Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam town on April 22 left 26 dead and 17 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu.

‘They want to murder in the name of jihad’: Asaduddin Owaisi urges global crackdown on TRF after India’s airstrikes in Pakistan

May 8, 2025

NEW DELHI: Calling Pakistan-backed terrorists "murderers in the name of jihad", Hyderabad MP and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday made an emphatic appeal for a global campaign to dismantle The Resistance Front (TRF), which had claimed responsibility for the recent Pahalgam terror attack.

At an all-party meeting chaired by defence minister Rajnath Singh a day after India carried out precision airstrikes at nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, Owaisi threw his weight behind Operation Sindoor. "I complimented the armed forces and the government. But this must not stop at airstrikes. We must now take this fight to global forums, get the UN Security Council, the US, and UK to list TRF as a terror outfit and sanction Pakistan," he said after the meeting.

Owaisi cited a February speech by Hafiz Abdur Rauf in PoK where the Lashkar-e-Taiba ideologue allegedly vowed to unleash jihad this year. "These are not freedom fighters, they are murderers. We must get Pakistan back on the FATF grey list,” he said, referring to the global anti-terror financing watchdog.

While the defence minister refrained from revealing full operational details, sources said Rajnath Singh informed party leaders that around 100 terrorists were believed to have been eliminated in the strikes on Muridke and Bahawalpur—long known as LeT strongholds. Singh clarified that the numbers are still being verified.

Owaisi also urged the government to extend support to civilians affected by Pakistan’s ceasefire violations. “Those who died in Poonch, those who lost homes in Uri, acknowledge them as terror victims. Rebuild their lives.”

In a notable intervention, Owaisi also addressed international speculation around reports of a Rafale jet being downed in Bathinda. “The IAF must clarify and deny such reports, if false, to preserve morale,” he said.

Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam attack, has dramatically raised the stakes between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, but Singh reiterated that India does not want to escalate further, unless provoked again.

Supreme Court 'iron hand' to deal with hate speech, slams Nishikant Dubey for comments on CJI

R. Balaji

09.05.25

The Supreme Court has held that any attempt to spread “communal hatred or indulge in hate speech must be dealt with an iron hand”, as it slammed BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for his comments on the Chief Justice of India and the top court.

Hearing a batch of petitions and cross-petitions over the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, a bench led by CJI Sanjiv Khanna had asked the Centre whether non-Hindus would be permitted in temple management boards, prompting Dubey to accuse him later of fomenting a “civil war” in the country. Dubey had also remarked that Parliament and state legislatures should be shut if the judiciary were to interfere in policy decisions.

Advocate Vishal Tiwari had moved a contempt petition against Dubey, alleging his remarks were scandalous and lowered the image of the judiciary.

A bench of CJI Khanna and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar, in a detailed order dated May 5, observed: “While we are not entertaining the present writ petition, we make it clear that any attempt to spread communal hatred or indulge in hate speech must be dealt with an iron hand.”

The court added: “Hate speech cannot be tolerated as it leads to loss of dignity and self-worth of the targeted group members, contributes to disharmony among groups, and erodes tolerance and open-mindedness, which is a must for a multi-cultural society committed to the idea of equality. Any attempt to cause alienation or humiliation of the targeted group is a criminal offence and must be dealt with accordingly. Recording the aforesaid, we dismiss the present writ petition.”

The bench said it had examined Dubey’s comments and felt that they were intended to scandalise and lower the authority of the Supreme Court, had tended to interfere, if not interfered, with the judicial proceedings pending before the top court, and had the tendency to obstruct the administration of justice.

“In our opinion, the comments were highly irresponsible and reflected a penchant to attract attention by casting aspersions on the Supreme Court and the judges of the Supreme Court,” the bench said.

It added that the BJP lawmaker’s statements showed ignorance about the role of the constitutional courts and the duties and obligations bestowed on them bythe Constitution.

Asserting that the Constitution is higher than the judiciary, legislature and the executive, the apex court said: “The power of judicial review is conferred by the Constitution on the judiciary. Statutes are subject to judicial review to test their constitutionality as well as for judicial interpretation. Therefore, when the constitutional courts exercise their power of judicial review, they act within the framework of the Constitution. To deny the power of judicial review to the courts would be to rewrite and negate the Constitution, as the power of judicial review is one of the cornerstonesof democracy….”

Plans to convert former Kent pub into mosque to meet in order to meet 'needs of Muslim community'

HediMehrez

8 MAY 2025

A Muslim charity in Gravesend has submitted plans to convert a pub into a place of worship - months after it was rejected.

The proposed change of use of The Peacock, on Peacock Street, was previously deemed ‘inappropriate’ in this location due to the ambiguity surrounding the ‘lack of clarity in terms of hours of use and the number of attendees’ and the impact on neighbours.

The application relates only to the ground floor of the former Peacock Public House. The initial proposal applied for permission to transform the public house into an academy featuring a prayer hall, a food bank, a youth club and a mosque.

It was rejected in October last year due to the lack of evidence demonstrating it was ‘no longer economically viable’ as a pub. The new proposal submitted on April 28 says the premises will have capacity for up to 65 worshippers and religious instruction (Madrasa) for 30 children. It does not propose any external alterations to the property.

In a planning document addressed to Gravesham Borough Council’s planning officers, it reads: “The Masjid will host 5 prayers per day, which include the early morning prayer (Fajr) and late evening prayer (Isha). Although the capacity of the Masjid is for up to 65 worshippers, in practice, there would be fewer worshippers in the Masjid at any one time.

“For example, the early morning and daytime prayers are typically less well attended than sunset and evening prayers and are within the typical unrestricted hours of use of the existing public house. The times when the Masjid will be used for prayer varies with the seasons.”

The Madrasa will cater for up to 30 children (aged between five and 15) and will operate between the hours of 5pm to 7pm on weekdays and between 9am and 12:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays. There is no dedicated off-street parking provision and refuse will continue to be stored in the front yard and collected from the highway, the planning document continues.

Muslims first settled in the Gravesend and Dartford area in the early 1960s. They initially prayed in each other’s houses, before The Albion Arms was converted in 1993 to the Gravesend Central Mosque.

As the community continues to grow, Gravesham is now home to 3,326 Muslims - 3.1 per cent of the overall population, according to the Census 2021.

“However, there are only 2 mosques in Gravesham, being the Central Mosque and Shah Jalal Mosque which is a 36-minute walk from the application site. Both existing mosques are operating beyond capacity. Proximity to a Mosque has always been a key consideration for Muslim families,” the letter reads.

“Gravesend is a typical example of this where 7.4 per cent of the 8,200 population in the Town Ward is Muslim (Census 2021). However, there is only one mosque in the locality with a capacity of 300. As such, there is a significant under provision of Muslim prayer facilities in Gravesham overall.”

The Peacock Public House was placed on the market with commercial property agents Sealey’s in approximately July 2020 and remained on the market until it was sold to the AlHaqq Academy in 2024.

The Peacock Public House featured darts, pool, TV, live sport and live music on a regular basis with late evening opening beyond midnight at weekends. The pub closed for business on January 1, 2024 following the completion of the sale of the property.

The applicant argued the loss of the Peacock Public House will not result in any “under provision of Public House or licensed premises use’ in the locality, naming nine alternative venues in the surrounding area, including Invicta Bar, Prince Albert and Waterloo Tavern.

A separate application from Al-Haqq Academy was approved in September to convert the first and second floors of the venue into a house of multiple occupancy (HMO).

US and Russia discuss restarting gas flows to EU – Reuters

8 May, 2025

Moscow and Washington have held discussions about resuming Russian natural gas exports to the EU, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing eight anonymous sources. The talks are reportedly part of broader efforts to end the Ukraine conflict.

The supply of Russian gas to the EU slowed dramatically three years ago, hit by sanctions related to the conflict and following the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines. Russia’s 40% share of European gas imports has fallen to 19%, currently consisting mainly of liquefied natural gas (LNG), with some supplies provided via the TurkStream pipeline.

According to the news agency’s sources, the discussions touched on US firms buying stakes in Russian energy giant Gazprom or in existing pipeline infrastructure in Ukraine. American companies could also serve as buyers, purchasing gas from Russia and selling it on to Europe to bypass political opposition, Reuters cited several sources as saying.

Speaking in Brussels on Thursday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the prospect of restoring Russian gas supplies a “mistake of historic dimensions” and stressed that “we would never let it happen.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has noted that Moscow is ready to negotiate restarting gas exports to the continent. “We know that some countries in Europe want to continue buying it from us,” he told Le Point in an interview last month.

Russia has been seeking to diversify its energy export markets against the backdrop of Western sanctions and flagging European demand.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak announced on Thursday that Moscow and Beijing have agreed to speed up work on the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project. The conduit will allow Russia to export up to 50 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas to China annually.

“The final negotiations... regarding economic conditions are now underway,” he said.

In addition to the Power of Siberia 2, Russia is looking into building an additional pipeline going through neighboring Kazakhstan, which combined would provide China with up to 100 bcm of gas annually.

90% Afghan households hit by Economic Shock last year: UN Report

By Fidel Rahmati

May 9, 2025

A UNDP report reveals 90% of Afghan households faced economic shocks in 2024, exacerbating the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.

A recent report from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) highlights that 90% of Afghan households are facing an economic shock in 2024 due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The report indicates that 65% of households have been directly impacted by this shock, with a 35% increase compared to 2023. The report warns that Afghanistan is sliding deeper into socio-economic crises, with widening inequalities, especially for women and rural areas.

The European Union’s delegation in Kabul also expressed concerns, noting that the restrictions imposed on women and girls between 2024 and 2026 could cause a loss of over $920 million to Afghanistan’s economy. These limitations continue to exacerbate the country’s economic and social challenges, further undermining progress in key sectors.

According to the UN report, 9 out of 10 Afghan households have lost their productive assets, income sources, livelihoods, and job opportunities. This widespread loss has led families to cut down on daily consumption and reduce expenditures, decreasing their resilience to future shocks and deepening their vulnerability.

In addition to these challenges, Afghanistan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) saw a modest growth of 2.7% from 2023 to 2024, marking the first positive growth since 2019. However, the report highlights that Afghanistan’s economy remains fragile, with a significant trade deficit of $6.7 billion in the first three quarters of 2024, up from $5.1 billion during the same period in 2023.

The UNDP also emphasizes that Afghanistan remains heavily reliant on imports and international aid, with 75% of the population facing food insecurity in 2024. This figure represents a 6% increase from 2023, with rural areas—home to 71% of the population—continuing to suffer from a lack of essential services, including healthcare, sanitation, and sustainable livelihoods.

As the situation in Afghanistan continues to worsen, the UNDP urges international actors to increase support to help mitigate the devastating impact of the ongoing crisis. The report also highlights the critical need for targeted assistance for women-headed households, rural communities, and internally displaced populations, who have been hit hardest by the economic downturn.

The report further stresses the importance of addressing gender disparities, with women continuing to face increasing poverty and social isolation due to the continued restrictions on education and employment opportunities. The future of Afghanistan’s economy and society depends on effective, inclusive policies and inclusive government and international cooperation to address these persistent challenges.

Given the importance of the Iraqi authorities’ official announcement of the prohibition of activities by militant groups based in Iraqi Kurdistan, and to address the various dimensions of this issue from a legal perspective while considering human rights concerns, we decided to contribute to a better understanding of this matter by presenting analyses from several experts. In this regard, Navid Kamali, an expert on regional issues, has also provided an exclusive commentary for the Iranian Kurdistan Human Rights Watch analyzing the different aspects and angles of this important development.

The full text of the commentary is as follows:

The Strategic Importance of Ending the Activities of Anti-Iranian Armed Groups in Iraq Under the Tehran-Baghdad Security Agreement

Regarding the security agreement between Iran and Iraq and its implications for anti-Iranian armed groups based in Iraqi Kurdistan, it is crucial to note that this agreement encompasses various security, political, legal, and social dimensions. It can be considered a turning point in the relations between the two neighboring countries after decades of facing security challenges stemming from the presence of armed groups on Iraqi soil. The fundamental importance of this agreement lies in establishing the security of shared borders, strengthening the elements of national sovereignty for both countries, and creating a more favorable environment for expanding bilateral and regional cooperation.

The prohibition of these groups’ activities and the requirement for their disarmament and the dismantling of their camps is not merely a temporary tactical measure. Rather, it is a manifestation of the shared political will of Tehran and Baghdad and part of a broader strategy to end a situation that has directly threatened the national security of the Islamic Republic of Iran for years while simultaneously challenging the authority and sovereignty of the central government of Iraq, particularly in its northern regions. These groups, exploiting the particularly difficult geographical conditions of the border areas and some of Iraq’s internal political complexities, especially in the relations between Baghdad and Erbil, had established and consolidated bases that not only served as platforms for planning, directing, and executing terrorist operations, sabotage activities, espionage, and the creation of ethnic discord against our country but also became hubs for other organized criminal activities such as arms, drug, and goods trafficking, as well as creating public insecurity in the border areas of both countries. Therefore, the full and precise implementation of the provisions of the security agreement, especially the clauses related to disarmament, the dismantling of camps, and the prevention of any activity by these groups, signifies the closure of one of the most significant avenues of infiltration and action against Iran’s security from the territory of its western neighbor and the end of decades of appeasement or inability to control this threat. This action, which has been pursued through continuous efforts by our country, the joint will of the governments of Tehran and Baghdad, and ultimately, pressure on the authorities of Iraqi Kurdistan to adhere to their commitments, demonstrates a deeper understanding by both sides of the nature of shared threats and the necessity of close cooperation to counter them. The strategic importance of this prohibition lies in the fact that it severely limits the vital space for these groups’ operational breathing room and maneuverability, weakens their logistical, training, and organizational capabilities, and sends a firm and clear message to these groups themselves, as well as their regional and extra-regional supporters, that the era of exploiting Iraqi territory as a safe haven for action against the Islamic Republic of Iran is coming to an end. Furthermore, the implementation of this agreement significantly contributes to strengthening the authority of the central government of Iraq throughout its territory, including in Iraqi Kurdistan, and is an important step towards the full implementation of the Iraqi constitution and preventing a part of the country’s territory from becoming a platform for threatening its neighbors.

Fortunately, the ultimatum issued by the Sulaymaniyah security forces to anti-Iranian groups to evacuate their headquarters in Zargwez, BanehGoreh, and Kole Rash, and the threat of using force in case of non-compliance, which followed the official order of the Iraqi federal government and the Prime Minister’s office confirming the prohibition of all military, media, or political activities of these groups, indicates an increased seriousness on the part of the Iraqi side, both at the central government level and within a part of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s structure, in implementing its commitments under the security agreement signed in March 2023. These practical measures, if pursued and implemented decisively, completely, and in a sustained and continuous manner, will be able to significantly reduce the level of security threats against the western and northwestern borders of the country and provide a suitable platform for deepening and expanding security, intelligence, and even economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Necessity of Judicial Accountability and Legal Cooperation Between Tehran and Baghdad

Alongside the undeniable importance of disarmament and ending the organized military and political activities of these groups, another vital issue that should not be overlooked is the necessity of holding their leaders, commanders, and influential members accountable for the wide range of crimes they have committed over the years against innocent citizens, military and law enforcement forces, and the security and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

This accountability, which should be pursued within the framework of judicial and legal cooperation between Iran and Iraq, can be a necessary and reinforcing complement to the security agreement and help achieve justice for the victims, enforce the law, and prevent the recurrence of such crimes in the future.

The records of these groups are replete with terrorist acts, including the assassination of national and military officials, bombings in public and urban areas, attacks on border posts and patrols, kidnapping of ordinary citizens and military personnel, armed extortion, intelligence and operational cooperation with foreign intelligence services and hostile governments against our country’s national interests, and participation in creating insecurity and instability in border areas. Failure to prosecute and punish the perpetrators and instigators of these crimes means disregarding the blood of thousands of martyrs and veterans and perpetuating the feeling of injustice among the families of the victims and the general Iranian public. From the perspective of international law and bilateral relations, the judicial pursuit of these cases, whether in the competent courts of our country or in Iraqi courts based on the territorial jurisdiction of some crimes or based on bilateral and multilateral agreements on combating terrorism and organized crime, can send a powerful message about the intolerance of terrorism and the necessity of holding its perpetrators accountable, regardless of the place and time of the crime. This action not only has a restorative aspect for the victims and achieves criminal justice but also acts as a strong deterrent from a strategic and security standpoint because it clearly demonstrates that committing crimes against our nation and security, even by fleeing to neighboring countries and taking refuge in difficult-to-access areas, will not entail judicial immunity, and sooner or later, the perpetrators will have to answer before justice.

Activating and strengthening the capacities for judicial cooperation between the two countries, including the exchange of legal and judicial information, the execution of judicial delegations, the identification and tracking of suspects and criminals, and especially, the implementation of extradition agreements based on the domestic laws of both parties and relevant international treaties, can significantly help in the arrest and fair trial of these individuals.

Managing the Return of Former and Separated Members with Islamic Compassion

Amidst the focus on the security and judicial dimensions of countering armed groups, one should not neglect the humanitarian and legal situation of those individuals who, for various reasons such as being deceived by false propaganda, social or family pressures, severe economic problems, political naivety, or even youthful adventurism, joined these groups and now, having witnessed the impasse of armed and terrorist activities, understanding the bitter realities within the organization, and perhaps expressing remorse for the past, intend to completely separate from these organizations and return to the embrace of their families and a normal and peaceful life in our country. Adopting an intelligent, humane, and at the same time precise and differentiated approach towards these individuals, while maintaining full decisiveness and seriousness against the main elements, commanders, ideological cadres, and individuals whose hands are stained with the blood of the people, can significantly help weaken the social base and human resources of these groups. On the other hand, it can showcase an image of the Iranian government’s compassion, wisdom, and prudence in dealing with this complex phenomenon.

Many of these individuals may be victims of unfavorable conditions, toxic propaganda, or the exploitation by group leaders and are now in a critical and uncertain situation in camps or areas under the influence of these groups in Iraq. Providing a way for the safe and dignified return of these individuals to the country, after a thorough review of their records and ensuring that they have not committed serious crimes and do not pose a security threat, is considered an important strategic action. This requires the design and implementation of specific, transparent, and legal mechanisms for reviewing the situation of each individual, providing necessary counseling, obtaining legal commitments, and, if conditions are met, issuing a letter of safe conduct or facilitating the return process and providing the minimum conditions for their reintegration into society, under the supervision and support of responsible institutions. Achieving this important goal requires close and coordinated cooperation between various Iranian government agencies, as well as establishing effective communication and cooperation channels with the central government of Iraq and relevant authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Sustainable Development of Border Regions: A Strategic Necessity for Long-Term Security

The final point that should not be overshadowed by the recent security developments and successes in implementing the agreement with Baghdad and should not be neglected is the need for increased, continuous, and strategic attention from senior Iranian government officials to the vital issue of comprehensive and sustainable development, inclusive economic growth, and the strengthening of social stability in the western and northwestern border regions of the country, especially the Kurdish-populated provinces. These regions, which due to their geopolitical location have been at the forefront of countering security threats arising from the activities of terrorist and separatist groups, and whose brave, honorable, and border-guarding people have consistently demonstrated their loyalty to Iran, its territorial integrity, and national security in the best possible way over the past decades, deserve and warrant far greater attention and investment in all areas.

Addressing the root causes of historical deprivations, creating sustainable and productive job opportunities, especially for the younger generation, balanced development of essential infrastructure including safe and efficient transportation routes, sustainable energy networks, access to safe and sufficient water, comprehensive coverage of communications and information technology, purposefully boosting local businesses and legitimate and healthy cross-border trade with Baghdad, Iraqi Kurdistan, and other neighbors, strengthening and facilitating constructive cultural and social exchanges, and most importantly, serious attention to the legitimate demands, legal rights, and citizenship rights of the residents of these areas and increasing their genuine participation in the decision-making and executive processes related to their fate, are the best and most sustainable strategy for immunizing the local community against the ideological infiltration and toxic propaganda of armed groups and criminal sects.

Sustainable and deep security is never achieved solely through hard military and security measures but is the product of an inseparable link between balanced economic development, comprehensive social justice, public satisfaction, and a strong sense of national belonging among all people, especially border residents. Boosting cross-border trade by activating and organizing border markets, establishing free trade zones or special economic zones with specific functions, and providing necessary incentives to domestic and foreign investors can significantly improve the living standards of border residents and turn them into the primary guardians of security and stability on the borders. Targeted investment in sectors with comparative advantages in these regions, such as modern agriculture, animal husbandry, processing and supplementary industries, mining, tourism, and technical and engineering services, can reduce unemployment rates, prevent the migration of elites and youth, and consequently, increase hope for the future and strengthen national solidarity.

This increased effort and serious determination for the development, construction, and prosperity of the Kurdish-populated regions of our country is not only a national, ethical, and humanitarian duty towards the citizens of this part of the country but also an undeniable strategic necessity for consolidating and strengthening long-term sustainable national security and can also double the effectiveness of the security agreement with Baghdad and similar measures. This is because a developed, prosperous, hopeful society with a sense of participation will be far less susceptible to accepting and aligning with extremist, separatist, terrorist, and violent ideologies. In this regard, joint and constructive cooperation between Tehran, Baghdad, and Erbil in facilitating legitimate trade, improving customs and transportation infrastructure for goods at official border crossings can also significantly contribute to achieving this economic prosperity and sustainable development and replace security threats with shared economic interests.

Sunni clerics cancel Mosul demonstration after political assurances

2025-05-08

Shafaq News/ A planned protest by Sunni clerics in Mosul against alleged political interference in the leadership of the Sunni Endowment in Nineveh was abruptly canceled late Wednesday, with no official reason disclosed, according to religious sources familiar with the matter.

“The demonstration was scheduled for 10:00 p.m. at the historic Nabi Sheet Mosque in western Mosul,” the sources told Shafaq News, pointing out that organizers intended to denounce what they described as “growing attempts by influential political factions to exert control over the Endowment’s leadership” ahead of Iraq’s parliamentary elections, set for November 11, 2025.

Sources also noted that media access was barred at the mosque, and several clerics exited the site quietly and discreetly, explaining that the protest’s sudden cancellation followed private assurances offered to the religious leadership that the Endowment’s autonomy and spiritual role in Nineveh would be preserved.

The identities of those who provided the guarantees were not disclosed.

They claimed that certain political blocs have been pressuring to replace current Sunni Endowment director Youssef al-Abed Rabbo with politically aligned candidates—an effort that has met firm resistance from moderate Sunni religious figures. “Al-Abed Rabbo had formally submitted his resignation to the central leadership of the Endowment, but it was rejected.”

The incident comes amid heightened political maneuvering across Iraq as various factions position themselves for the upcoming vote.

UN: Israel school closures in East Jerusalem ‘assault on children’

May 08, 2025

JERUSALEM: The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees on Thursday decried an “assault on children” after Israel closed all six of its schools in annexed East Jerusalem, months after an Israeli ban on its activities took effect.

“Storming schools & forcing them shut is a blatant disregard of international law,” UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini posted on X, describing the move as “An assault on children. An assault on education.”

UNRWA spokesman Jonathan Fowler said that Israeli forces “closed six UN schools in annexed East Jerusalem on Thursday, posting closure orders on the six buildings and forcibly entering three of the six schools.”

An AFP photographer present at two of the schools in the Shuafat refugee camp reported that Israeli forces entered the premises and posted a closure notice stating the schools were operating without “authorization.”

The children had to leave the premises, with many departing in tears. Several young pupils, some visibly moved and others shocked, hugged in front of the school before they left.

UNRWA said one of its staff members was detained.

“From May 8, 2025, it will be prohibited to operate educational institutions, or employ teachers, teaching staff, or any other staff, and it will be forbidden to accommodate students or allow the entry of students into this institution,” the closure order in Hebrew read.

UNRWA’s director in the West Bank, Roland Friedrich, said that “heavily armed” forces surrounded the three UNRWA schools in Shuafat camp at 9 a.m.

Friedrich added that 550 pupils aged six to 15 were present when the closure was enforced, calling it “a traumatising experience for young children who are at immediate risk of losing their access to education.”

Friedrich said police were deployed in the area around three separate schools in other parts of East Jerusalem, which has been annexed by Israel since 1967.

UNRWA said that the school year for 800 children had “been ended by force.”

The Palestinian Authority condemned the move in a statement, calling it a “violation of children’s right to education.”

In a statement, its Education Ministry called the closures a “crime.”

It urged international institutions “to assume their responsibilities and defend the right of refugee children to a free and safe education.”

UNRWA has provided support for Palestinian refugees around the Middle East for more than 70 years, but has long clashed with Israeli officials, who have repeatedly accused it of undermining the country’s security.

At the end of January, Israeli legislation banned the agency’s activities.

Due to the annexation, the law applies to East Jerusalem but not to the rest of the West Bank, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967.

Contact between it and Israeli officials is also forbidden.

Israel has accused UNRWA of providing cover for Hamas militants, claiming that some of the agency’s employees took part in the Oct. 7, 2023, assault on Israel, which sparked the war in Gaza.

A series of investigations found some “neutrality-related issues” at UNRWA, but stressed Israel had not provided conclusive evidence for its headline allegation.

Nevertheless, the UN said in August that nine staff working for UNRWA would be sacked because they may have been involved in the attacks.

Adalah, an Israeli group defending the rights of the Arab minority, reported that Israeli police were raiding six UNRWA-run schools in East Jerusalem.

The organization filed a petition with Israel’s Supreme Court in mid-January, arguing the new legislation against UNRWA violated “fundamental human rights and Israel’s obligations under international law.”

Settlers Storm Al-Aqsa Mosque

08 May 2025

Dozens of Zionist settlers stormed the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque this Thursday morning, under heavy protection from the Israeli occupation police.

Jerusalem sources reported that a number of settlers, accompanied by Israeli occupation police, stormed the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque in the morning, carrying out provocative tours of its courtyards.

Israeli occupation forces imposed strict military measures in the Old City of Quds, obstructing the entry of worshippers to the mosque and confiscating the ID cards of many of them at the gates, in a clear effort to limit the Palestinian presence and prevent these violations.

"When They Said The New Pope Was An American, I Flipped Out, I Said 'No Way'!" - Chicago Celebrates Hometown Pope

May 9, 2025

The church where Pope Leo XIV attended mass as a child and served as an altar boy is now an empty shell.

Only the stained glass windows remain intact inside the sturdy facade of St Mary's of the Assumption on the far edge of Chicago's South Side.

The disrepair is one indication of how the Catholic Church's power and influence has been ebbing away in America's big cities.

And yet, around this city there's palpable excitement, particularly among Catholics, that the new pontiff is not only American - he's a South Side Chicagoan.

"When they said the new Pope was an American, I flipped out, I said 'no way'!" said Mary Simons, a French teacher and nearby resident who brought her mother to see St Mary's.

"The Church seems like it's getting smaller and smaller in this country," said Ms Simons. "I'm hoping that this will rejuvenate the church and make it bigger and better."

A small trickle of Catholics, along with a few non-Catholics, made their way to St Mary's on Thursday afternoon as the news spread that Pope Leo XIV – until recently, Cardinal Robert Prevost – had been elected by his fellow cardinals in Rome.

While some lamented over the poor state of the neighbourhood church – "It's shocking to see this" remarked one visitor - several were close to tears as they considered the humble roots of their new leader.

Natalie Payne attended the church and the school associated with it. She hadn't heard the news but just happened to be driving by when she saw the small crowd outside and stopped to take in the moment.

"We loved this school. It was a very family oriented place and very accepting of difference," she said. "I was one of the very few black people who attended this school, but I always felt part of the community. It was just a beautiful place."

Catholics make up about 20% of the US population, according to Pew Research, a number that dropped from 24% at the start of the century. Attendance has fallen and the decline is noticeable in the big industrial cities of the Midwest, in closed schools and shuttered houses of worship like St Mary's.

Leo XIV grew up in a modest home just a few streets away from here. The Chicago Sun-Times reported his parents – his father was a school administrator and his mother a librarian - bought their home in 1949, paying a mortgage of $42 a month.

His father was of French and Italian decent and his mother had Spanish heritage, according to a Vatican news release.

Charleen Burnette, one of the Pope's former classmates, told the BBC she remembers him as a "quiet, kind, gentle, wicked-smart kid".

"He was always the top of our class, all the time," she said, recalling how he always knew he wanted to be a priest and would stay late to sweep and dust St Mary's as a boy.

"He vocalised it. He lived it. He exemplified it," she said.

In recent years, the Catholic Church has not only weathered declining attendance but also child abuse scandals that continue to resonate today.

The Midwest Augustinians, a religious order in Chicago which Pope Leo once led, only published a list of priests credibly accused of sexual abuse in 2024, after years of public pressure.

As a cardinal, Prevost was criticised after being accused of allowing a priest facing sex abuse allegations to live in an Augustinian building near an elementary school. The priest was later moved and the religious order says it has tried to be transparent.

There is a common feeling here that the church has not fully reckoned with the past but despite that, many Catholics here expressed hope for the new Pope's reign.

Outside Holy Name Cathedral, the centre of the Catholic Church in downtown Chicago, workers were hanging bunting to prepare for a special mass on Friday morning.

Father Gregory Sakowicz, rector of Holy Name, said he was just about to preside over mass at the cathedral when the news broke.

"When I saw the white smoke on TV, I looked out the window and the sun came out here in Chicago," he said.

"Later, during holy communion someone told me, 'Father, the new Pope is Father Robert Prevost from Chicago.' I was shocked."

Fr Sakowicz said Pope Leo XIV "will be his own man" but added that he was confident that he would follow in the footsteps of his predecessor and be "a voice for human rights, a voice for the voiceless, concerned with the poor, and concerned for our mother Earth".

And in this sport-mad city, there's one question that might nearly match the importance of the new Pope's theological direction – which of the city's baseball teams does he root for?

Although there were some reports that he backs the Chicago Cubs, in interviews the new pope's brother has said he cheers for the White Sox – the team with a passionate South Side fan base. Both teams on X, however, have claimed the new Pope's support.

"Go White Sox - and go Cubs," said Fr Sakowicz. "There's just a lot of enthusiasm and joy around here.

"He might be from Chicago, but he will be a pope for the whole world, not just Chicago, not just the US, not just North America - but the entire world."

CAIR-MA Releases New Civil Rights Report Showing Escalation of Hate Crimes and School Violence Against Muslims in Massachusetts

May 8, 2025

The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MA) today released its 2024 Civil Rights Report, documenting a dramatic rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes, school violence, failures in police response, and workplace harassment.

Titled “Demanding Justice: Nearing a Decade of Legal Advocacy,” the report is based on 209 requests for legal help received by CAIR-MA in 2024.

Key findings:

28 hate-related incidents were reported to CAIR-MA, a 65% increase from 2023, marking the highest number in CAIR-MA’s 10-year history. Yet, none were charged as hate crimes by law enforcement.

The level of violence was also the greatest ever reported, as victims were physically attacked, spat on, stalked, threatened, and had their property vandalized.

Violence in public schools also increased, including a student who was poisoned and another who needed surgery for injuries, as well as multiple instances of teacher misconduct and neglect.

Muslim women wearing hijab were disproportionately harassed and assaulted.

“This report paints a harrowing picture of rising Islamophobia in Massachusetts,” said TahirahAmatul-Wadud, Esq., Executive Director of CAIR-MA. “When Muslim families face violence at school, on the job, and in the streets—and when the system fails to respond—our basic right to safety is in jeopardy, and we are in crisis.”

Barbara J. Dougan, CAIR-MA Legal Director, said, “Imagine being a victim who has been traumatized and even injured, yet the police conduct only a cursory investigation that ignores the perpetrator’s motive.  Too often critical information affecting public safety in Massachusetts is being overlooked, ignored, or even withheld by law enforcement.  We call on the state’s leadership to join our demand for even-handed policing that does not ignore or disfavor Muslim victims.”

The report also highlights CAIR-MA’s legal casework, public education efforts, and policy advocacy.

June 10 Legislative Briefing: CAIR-MA will hold a legislative briefingat 1 p.m. on June 10, 2025, at the Massachusetts State House, where it will share the stories behind these statistics and present policy solutions addressing anti-Muslim hate crimes, school bullying, and education discrimination.

In March, CAIR released its National 2025 Civil Rights Report “Unconstitutional Crackdowns,” which revealed that Islamophobia continues to be at an all-time high across the country. In 2024, CAIR offices nationwide received a total of 8,658 complaints—the highest number ever recorded since the organization’s first civil rights report in 1996. CAIR said viewpoint discrimination against those speaking out against genocide and apartheid was a key factor in many cases. Employment discrimination was the highest reported category, followed by immigration/asylum, education discrimination, and hate crimes and incidents.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

CAIR Designates University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) as ‘Hostile Campus’ for Targeting Anti-Genocide Voices

May 8, 2025

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, has designated the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) as a Hostile Campus due to its pattern of targeting students who advocate for Palestinian rights and speak out against genocide.

SEE: CAIR Designates UIUC as a Hostile Campus

“UIUC has cultivated a dangerous climate for students who support justice for Palestine,” said Corey Saylor, CAIR’s Research and Advocacy Director. “This is not inclusion, it’s institutionalized Islamophobia.”

Saylor added: “It’s actually been beyond crisis and appalling at this point. Universities like UIUC are not just failing to protect their students but actively punishing them for defending human rights.”

Despite public claims of inclusion, UIUC has subjected Muslim, Arab, Palestinian, and allied students to surveillance, arrests, felony charges, and policy crackdowns. In 2024, campus police dismantled a peaceful pro-Palestinian encampment, arrested students, and allegedly used license plate readers, video footage, and social media to surveil others. Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) was reportedly disbanded, while the administration imposed harsh protest restrictions that disproportionately target Muslim students.

Civil liberties organizations, including the ACLU of Illinois, have condemned the university’s criminalization of dissent. UIUC previously faced AAUP censure for violating academic freedom in the case of Palestinian professor Steven Salaita in 2014. In 2025, UIUC received a failing 49.9/100 free speech score, with students describing the climate as “very anti-Palestine.”

UIUC is the latest addition to CAIR’s list of Hostile Campuses, which now includes more than 20 universities nationwide. Learn more at islamophobia.org/hostile-campuses.

Washington, D.C., CAIR recently launched its “Unhostile Campus Campaign” aimed at fostering a campus environment in which Palestinian, Muslim, Arab, Jewish, and other students, faculty, and staff opposing the genocide in Gaza enjoy free speech and academic freedom and are not subjected to state force or university discipline due to their viewpoints.

Students, staff, and faculty who wish for their university or college campus to be potentially designated as a hostile campus should complete the ‘Report a Hostile Campus’ form. This form is intended solely to inform CAIR’s ‘UnHostile Campus Campaign.’

Individuals seeking CAIR’s legal and advocacy services should contact their local office or chapter, or if there is no local chapter, file a formal report with CAIR’s National Civil Rights Department.

Earlier this year, CAIR released its 2025 Civil Rights Report “Unconstitutional Crackdowns,” which reveals that Islamophobia continues to be at an all-time high across the country. CAIR said viewpoint discrimination against those speaking out against genocide and apartheid was a key factor in many cases.

Trump calls election of first American pope a 'great honour'

May 9, 2025

Ana Faguy

US President Donald Trump has called the election of the first American pope a "great honour" for the country and said he looks forward to meeting him.

Trump is among the many American political figures applauding the historic appointment of Robert Francis Prevost, who will be known as Pope Leo XIV, to lead the Catholic Church.

"To have the Pope from America is a great honour," Trump said when asked for reaction to the news.

Pope Leo, 69, was born in Chicago and attended university outside Philadelphia, before becoming a missionary in Peru.

The US has the fourth largest number of Catholics in the world, and congratulations started pouring in soon after the first American pope's name was announced.

Vice-President JD Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, praised the pope's election.

"I'm sure millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for his successful work leading the Church," Vance wrote on X.

Former President Joe Biden, a devout Catholic who has spoken about his warm relationship with Pope Francis, also offered his congratulations.

"Habemuspapam - May God bless Pope Leo XIV of Illinois," Biden, the second Catholic president in US history, wrote on social media.

Former President Barack Obama, who launched his political career in Chicago, wrote on X: "Michelle and I send our congratulations to a fellow Chicagoan, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV."

"This is a historic day for the United States, and we will pray for him as he begins the sacred work of leading the Catholic Church and setting an example for so many, regardless of faith."

Former President George Bush issued a statement, saying that he and his wife Laura were "delighted" by the news.

"This an historic and hopeful moment for Catholics in America and for the faithful around the world," he said.

"We join those praying for the success of Pope Leo XIV as he prepares to lead the Catholic church, serve the neediest, and share God's love."

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson also congratulated the new pope and wrote on social media: "May God bless the first American papacy in these historic days."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a Catholic, also extended his congratulations.

"This is a moment of profound significance for the Catholic Church, offering renewed hope and continuity amid the 2025 Jubilee Year to over a billion faithful worldwide," Rubio said.

"The United States looks forward to deepening our enduring relationship with the Holy See with the first American pontiff."

As cardinal, it appears Prevost did not shy away from occasionally challenging the views of the Trump administration.

An account under his name reposted a post on social media platform X which was critical of the Trump administration's deportation of a US resident to El Salvador, and shared a critical comment piece written about a TV interview given by Vance to Fox News.

"JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others," read the post, repeating the headline from the commentary on the National Catholic Reporter website.

The BBC has contacted the Vatican but has not independently confirmed the account, which was created in 2011, belongs to the new pontiff.

Meanwhile, in Prevost's hometown, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson offered a note of congratulations.

"Everything dope, including the Pope, comes from Chicago! Congratulations to the first American Pope Leo XIV! We hope to welcome you back home soon," he wrote.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker called the moment "historic".

"Hailing from Chicago, Pope Leo XIV ushers in a new chapter that I join those in our state welcoming in at a time when we need compassion, unity, and peace," he wrote on social media.

RIYADH: The perennial herbaceous plant TeucriumOliverianum has spread extensively throughout Saudi Arabia’s Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve, indicating a balanced ecosystem, the Saudi Press Agency reported recently.

Citing experts, the report noted that the reserve has had a remarkable expansion in healthy and stable vegetation cover, “the best condition since its establishment in 2018.”

This has helped to combat desertification and soil erosion, the SPA reported.

Known locally as Al-Aihlan or Ahneh, the plant has long, thin stems and delicate leaves, coated with fine bristles that help minimize water loss, adding to its adaptability to harsh environments.

Native to the Arabian Peninsula, the plant is highly valued for grazing. It also provides shelter and sustenance for various small desert animals and insects, making it an essential part of the natural food chain.

In an earlier report, SPA quoted wild plant expert Abdullah Al-Barrak as saying TeucriumOliverianum was also a valuable food source for honeybees.

Renowned for its evergreen or semi-evergreen leaves and striking blue-violet flowers, the plant has become an iconic symbol of the flora of the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve.

The 91,500 sq. km reserve, formerly known as Al-Taysiyah Natural Reserve, is the second-largest of its kind in the Kingdom, spread across regions of Hail, Qassim, Al-Jouf, Northern Borders and the Eastern Province.

The reserve’s vegetation cover has surged from 1.5 percent in 2018 to an impressive 6.7 percent, and now has over 179 plant species, including 113 seasonal and 66 perennial varieties, officials have said.

Jeddah public transport network expands with new buses and routes

AFSHAN AZIZ

May 08, 2025

JEDDAH: In a major stride toward transforming urban mobility, Jeddah has officially launched the new phase of its public transport system.

The expansion includes 91 new buses with three fully electric models, and six new bus routes. All the vehicles feature improved accessibility for passengers with disabilities.

The new fleet was unveiled in a ceremony on Wednesday under the supervision of the Jeddah Transport Company in partnership with the Saudi Public Transport Company.

Reflecting on the upgrade, Youssef bin Nasser Al-Sayegh, CEO of JTC, said: “Our focus is not just on movement, but on intelligent movement. We plan to leverage data and analytics from the new GPS and dashboard systems to continually improve long-term operational efficiency and deliver a more seamless passenger experience.

“This includes improving route synchronization, adjusting timetables, and reducing unnecessary stops to enhance efficiency and increase the punctuality of bus arrivals.”

The new technology is being used to analyze trip durations, delays and passenger counts in real time.

By collecting and studying long-term data on passenger movement, peak hours, and high-demand areas, JTC hopes to improve services by refining routes.

The network expansion has increased the number of routes from six to 14, providing better access to the city.

There now more than 80 stops and 117 air-conditioned stations, with buses operating daily from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Tickets are priced at SAR 3.45 per trip (including VAT), with daily, weekly, and monthly subscription options available.

“This launch is not just about numbers, it’s about building confidence in public transportation,” said Khalid bin Abdullah Al-Hogail, managing director and CEO of SAPTCO.

Passengers can now use the official Jeddah Buses mobile application to buy tickets and plan journeys.

Looking to the future, Al-Sayegh shared a broader vision beyond 2028.

He said: “We’re actively designing a public transport system that not only includes comprehensive bus routes but also introduces new modes, like the marine taxi, to enhance connectivity and make the most of Jeddah’s coastal geography.

“As part of our five-year roadmap, we plan to expand coverage further into Jeddah’s suburbs and northern areas, connecting key neighborhoods and alleviating pressure on high-traffic corridors.

“These developments will ensure that every resident, no matter where they live, has convenient access to sustainable transport,” he added.

The marine taxi initiative, which recently began a pilot phase, presents a novel approach to alleviating road congestion by using the Red Sea as an alternative transit route.

The sea taxi service is already up and running, connecting major locations like the Jeddah Yacht Club, Historic Jeddah district, and will soon begin operations in the SharmObhur district.

“This project is just the beginning; our goal is to expand the routes and enhance the city’s connectivity along the waterfront,” he said.

Al-Sayegh emphasized the project’s long-term impact: “In the future, we plan to develop 20 state-of-the-art water taxi stations that will handle up to 29,000 passengers daily, further reducing congestion and promoting maritime tourism.

“This project is not just about improving transport; it’s also about enhancing the overall experience for residents, visitors, and tourists, aligning with the Kingdom’s vision to modernize infrastructure and provide modern transportation solutions.

“Our integrated approach looks at how buses, future rail solutions, and maritime options can all work in sync. This is a foundation for a forward-thinking urban transport system, one that evolves with the city and its people.”

Ceremony attendees were given a tour of the control room at the event, where they watched live feeds from bus stations and marine taxis, showing how the system is operated and monitored in real time.

UN chief voices ‘grave concern’ after Sudan’s aid hub rocked by 5 days of drone attacks

CASPAR WEBB

May 08, 2025

NEW YORK CITY: The UN secretary-general has voiced “grave concern” over repeated drone attacks on the eastern Sudanese city of Port Sudan, the country’s main entry point for humanitarian aid.

The city faced a new drone strike on Thursday for the fifth consecutive day amid a fierce confrontation between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces paramilitary.

The attacks have led to an exodus of civilians from the city, which hosts UN offices and aid agencies, and is the seat of power of the army-backed government.

Sudanese army officials have blamed the RSF for the strikes, which have targeted the city’s port, largest operational fuel depot, central power station and airport, among other sites.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the attacks “threaten to increase humanitarian needs and further complicate aid operations in the country,” his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said on Wednesday.

“The secretary-general is alarmed at the expansion of the conflict into an area that has served as a place of refuge for large numbers of people displaced from the capital, Khartoum, and other areas,” he added.

Sudan’s brutal two-year-long civil war has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than 13 million.

The conflict has created “the biggest humanitarian crisis ever recorded,” the International Rescue Committee has said.

“The secretary-general reiterates that all parties to the conflict must comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law,” Dujarric said.

“They must not direct attacks against civilians and civilian objects; must take all feasible precautions to avoid, and in any event to minimize, incidental civilian casualties; and must allow and facilitate rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian relief for civilians in need.”

Almost all humanitarian aid enters the Northeast African country through Port Sudan.

The Chinese Embassy in Sudan on Thursday called on all Chinese citizens to leave the country as soon as possible.

Guterres is “concerned at the lack of political will of the parties to return to the negotiating table, preferring instead to continue pursuing their military objectives,” Wednesday’s statement said.

“The secretary-general calls on the parties to engage constructively with the mediation support mechanisms already in place to assist the parties to reach a political solution, underscoring the UN’s continued support to help find a way out of this crisis.

“He renews his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and stresses that dialogue is the only way to achieve the peace that the people of Sudan demand.”

Lagos State Dy Governor Calls On Muslims To Reflect Quranic Teachings In Conduct

May 8, 2025

By OluseyiTaiwo-Oguntua

Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Lagos State Deputy Governor, has encouraged Muslims in the country to live according to the teachings of the Qur’an, saying such conduct can inspire others to embrace the faith.

He gave the advice on Thursday while speaking as the Chairman of the occasion at the formal opening of the ShifawuAweroBayewu Islamic Foundation (SHABIF) Centre, in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government, Lagos.

“I want to challenge the Islamic leaders on the reason why our youths abandon our religion. My questions are, why does this happen and how do we address this issue,” he queried.

Hamzat said that many of the new converts were converted primarily because of the teachings of the Holy Quran, not because of the attitude of some of the Muslim faithfuls.

He therefore encouraged everyone to ensure that they conduct themselves in line with the Quranic teachings to attract others to the religion.

Speaking further, the Deputy Governor admonished everyone to be their brothers’ and sisters’ keepers that “other religions attract our people because they attend to the needs of others, so we should try to emulate these good deeds.”

Rt. Hon. MudashiruAjayiObasa the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, in  his goodwill message commended Kamal Bayewu for the initiative to build a mosque in memory of his parent.

Similarly, Dr. OlurantiAdebule the Senator, Lagos West Senatorial District in her remarks,  commended the host, Bayewu, for the commissioning of the Mosque and prayed that Allah give everyone the grace to build a Mosque for Allah.

She however, charged the community to take ownership of the edifice and fulfill their responsibilities to almighty Allah, in their daily activities.

Kamal AyindeBayewu, the Host and the Chairman,  Lagos State Local Government Service Commission,  earlier  in his welcome address, said that the SHABIF Centre is more than a physical structure, but a spiritual legacy, built with the intention of offering worship, education, community cohesion, and charitable outreach.

He described the Centre as a place of worship, learning, and community service, dedicated to Allah and the loving memory of his mother, AlhajaShifawuAweroBayewu,  adding that,  “This centre stands today as a tribute to a life well-lived, a life that inspires values of humility, resilience, and unwavering faith.

“This edifice comprises separate prayer halls for men and women, a multipurpose event hall, modern ablution facilities, and a Janazah section fully equipped to serve the Muslim ummah in the dignified preparation of the deceased in accordance with Islamic rites.”

Shaykh’ Abdur-Rahmaan Olanrewaju Ahmad, the National Missioner, Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria in his lecture, noted that a mosque is a social and community centre, and not just a praying hall as wrongly perceived by most people in the present times.

He pointed out that the mosque is a resource centre, a community centre, that the praying hall is just one of the many sections of the mosque.

“The mosque is the nucleus of the Muslim community. It is usually located in the centre of the community.

“Mosque must be a clean place, it must be spacious, it must be made conducive for the children and all users,” he added.

Algeria commemorates thousands killed by French troops in 1945 massacres

May 8, 2025

As Europe celebrates the 80th anniversary of its triumph over fascism and the end of World War II, Algeria is remembering a darker anniversary: the colonial-era massacres that erupted the same day.

In ceremonies in Guelma, Kherrata and Setif, the cities where the massacres took place, Algerians paid homage to those who were killed.

In a message this week, President AbdelmadjidTebboune framed the event as a matter of national pride and prelude to the country's fight for independence after 132 years of French colonialism.

Algeria's ministry of war veterans is marking the anniversary with a series of events under the slogan, “A people without memory is a people without a future.”

The fight for independence

More than 500,000 tirailleurs (light infantry) from North Africa, West Africa, and Madagascar fought for France during World War II. Some volunteered. Others were forcibly conscripted. Many, including more than 100,000 Algerian tirailleurs, hoped their sacrifices would secure them greater rights.

But when the war ended, Algerians who dared to demand them were met with repression and violence, even as then-Gen. Charles De Gaulle exalted how “the cause of liberty and justice" had prevailed in a radio broadcast throughout France and its colonies, including Algeria.

On May 8, 1945, Algerians filled city streets in Ain Temouchent, Guelma, Kherrata and Setif, waving flags and reviving pre-war calls for independence. Protesters were met with police fire. Violent anti-French riots broke out, killing more than 100.

France subsequently launched an air and ground offensive that killed thousands of Algerians — 45,000 according to Algerian authorities and around 3,000 according to French statistics.

No official apology from France

Tebboune and French President Emmanuel Macron announced a truth commission-style “dossier de memoire” in 2022, led by a committee of historians from both countries. Yet, its activities have stalled amid deteriorating relations over issues such as immigration and how France juggles ties between Algeria and its regional rival Morocco.

DahoDjerbal, an Algerian historian who has written extensively on the events of May 8, 1945 and interviewed many survivors, said that day was a turning point in the country’s history when Algerians began to seek independence.

And, he said, France “has never acknowledged that they committed a mass murder. That's the current term; we can call it a crime against humanity or a war crime. There was no declared war against the Algerian people. And we sent the air force, the navy, and field artillery to suppress a demonstration.”

French leaders, including Macron, have called for truth and recognition but stopped short of fulfilling Algeria's demands for a formal state apology.

A delegation of around 30 French lawmakers from left and centrist parties arrived in Algiers on Wednesday to participate in the commemorations of the massacres.

Civil servants must embrace MADANI values, not just repeat them - Hajiji

Bernama

09-05- 2025

KOTA KINABALU: Civil servants must fully embrace the values behind the MADANI concept - Sustainability, Prosperity, Innovation, Respect, Trust and Compassion, and not treat them as mere slogans, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He stressed that these principles should be reflected in the behaviour and work culture of civil servants.

“Civil servants are the backbone of the state’s development and play a key role in implementing government policies. That’s why their actions must be guided by integrity, efficiency and a strong sense of responsibility,” he said.

“The public is watching us. Our behaviour, words and how we treat the people reflect the government’s service delivery today,” Hajiji said at the JelajahTaatSetia MADANI Programme held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) today.

Also present was Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

Hajiji urged all 21,989 state civil servants and 126,677 federal civil servants in Sabah to act as facilitators, helping to communicate government policies and implement its initiatives effectively.

He reminded them that it is their duty to ensure people understand that the government is not just planning, but actively carrying out many development programmes to improve the well-being of Sabah and its people.

The Chief Minister also reaffirmed his commitment to strengthen public service delivery and ensure that development benefits reach all levels of society under the Malaysia MADANI approach.

He said Sabah now has 219 MADANI Communities established with RM657,000 in funding, along with the Ehsan@KUSKOP initiative in three target districts - Kota Belud, Kota Marudu and Kudat, and various forums and education programmes to help people better understand the MADANI concept.

Hajiji also called on all Sabahans to put aside political differences and work together to strengthen unity for the good of the state.

“Political stability is the key to prosperity. Let us move forward together in the spirit of solidarity, prioritising unity, and renewing our commitment to building a brighter future for Sabah,” he said.

Survey: Majority polled think Najib should not be pardoned

By Syed JaymalZahiid

09 May 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 — More than half of respondents in a survey on Malaysians’ views about the criminal justice system said they oppose the pardon plea by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.

The rider survey, conducted by Merdeka Centre and commissioned by Projek Sama, a civil society group consisting mostly of academics, polled over 1,200 Malaysians between March and April this year.

Respondents were asked four primary questions, one of which specifically addressed their opinion on Najib’s pardon. Only a third supported the plea, while over half opposed it, citing feelings of betrayal.

“Overall, 32.7 per cent of respondents supported his pardon plea on the grounds that he has contributed to the country, while 57.8 per cent believed that Najib should not be pardoned for various reasons,” the group said in a statement.

Among those who opposed the pardon, slightly over a third said their objection stemmed from the belief that Najib’s scandal was a betrayal of the people and caused significant losses.

Another 15 per cent cited pending cases as their reason for opposing the former prime minister’s pardon, while 8.1 per cent pointed to Najib’s refusal to admit guilt despite his conviction.

Najib is currently seeking to serve his remaining sentence at home, even as he continues to face trials for multiple corruption and criminal breach of trust charges related to the 1MDB scandal.

Among ethnic Chinese, 95 per cent rejected his plea, while 51 per cent of Bumiputeras of other faiths also opposed it.

Across political leanings, unsurprisingly, Najib enjoyed the highest support from BarisanNasional (BN) supporters, at 67 per cent.

Among PakatanHarapan (PH) supporters, 87 per cent said they opposed Najib’s pardon.

The PerikatanNasional (PN) camp was evenly divided, with 46.1 per cent supporting the pardon bid and 44.6 per cent opposing it.

Among supporters of GabunganParti Sarawak (GPS), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), and Warisan, slightly over half of respondents opposed the pardon, while 39.2 per cent were in favour.

The survey also found that opposition to Najib’s pardon was markedly higher among urban dwellers at 63.6 per cent. However, those with household incomes below RM4,000 were mostly supportive.

Projek Sama said the survey was commissioned to commemorate May 9, the date marking the fall of the BN government led by Najib, driven by public anger over a consumption tax blamed for the soaring cost of living and the 1MDB scandal.

Across ethnic backgrounds, Najib’s pardon bid enjoyed the strongest support from Indian respondents at 62.2 per cent, followed by Muslim Bumiputeras at 50.5 per cent and Malays at 43 per cent.

MARA allocates RM8 million to boost Bumiputera optometry entrepreneurship

Bernama

08-05- 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) has allocated RM8 million to enhance entrepreneurial opportunities in the optometry industry for Bumiputera entrepreneurs.

MARA director-general Datuk Zulfikri Osman said the funds are channelled through the Optometry Entrepreneur Development Programme. It aims to support about 30 participants in opening businesses in shopping complexes, with a maximum financing limit of RM400,000.

“We know that out of 6,700 optometry shops in Malaysia, only 10 per cent are Bumiputera-owned. We hope the involvement of Bumiputera entrepreneurs can be increased beyond this 10 per cent.

“As such, MARA, in collaboration with La Calisto, will provide support in the form of training, exposure to the latest optometry technology, clinical training, and effective marketing and business management strategies,“ he said at the launch of the Optometry Entrepreneur Development Programme here today.

Also present were La Calisto general manager Wong ChingFook and MARA Commercial Infrastructure Division director Lailatul AsmahMohd Tahir.

The collaboration between MARA and La Calisto is in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s call at the Bumiputera Economic Congress, which encouraged Bumiputera entrepreneurs to collaborate with their non-Bumiputera counterparts to move forward under the Madani government.

Zulfikri said the programme aims to raise public awareness on the importance of eye care while creating more job opportunities and promoting entrepreneurship across the country.

He said the initiative also aims to cultivate more entrepreneurs in the optometry sector by providing skills training, financial support, and comprehensive business mentorship.

He added that La Calisto is also working with UniversitiKebangsaan Malaysia, UniversitiTeknologi Malaysia, and UniversitiSains Islam Malaysia to identify potential entrepreneurs among optometry graduates to participate in the programme.

“To ensure participants succeed, they must possess knowledge in optometry and marketing, and their outlets must be located within shopping complexes,” he said.

He said that based on records, 90 per cent of special programmes under MARA’s initiatives have been successful over the past 10 years, and expressed confidence that this entrepreneur development initiative will achieve similar success.

MAIS denies claim faith rehab for ex-GISBH members only covers tajwid

Bernama

09-05- 2025

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) has denied viral claims on social media alleging that its faith rehabilitation programme for former members of GISB Holdings SdnBhd (GISBH) focuses solely on the study of tajwid (Qur’anic pronunciation rules).

MAIS secretary Dr Ahmad ShahirMakhtar said the Insan Rabbani programme, introduced to rehabilitate the beliefs (akidah) of former GISBH members, was approved on Feb 4. 2025, as aligned with the fatwa gazetted on Oct 16, 2024, which ruled that the beliefs, teachings, and practices of GISBH and its network deviate from true Islamic teachings.

He said the programme is part of MAIS’ broader efforts to restore the Islamic faith of former members, conducted in collaboration with the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), and runs from Feb 15 to to August 2025.

“The Insan Rabbani programme is held every Sunday in 24 sessions, each lasting four hours, at four locations: SekolahRendah Agama (SRA) Country Homes in Rawang; Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque in Shah Alam; SRA Sijangkang in Kuala Langat; and SRA Sungai Kantan in Kajang. A total of 51 certified teachers are involved in delivering the modules,” he said in a statement today.

Ahmad Shahir added that the programme follows the Istitabah Module, approved by MAIS in 2013, and includes key areas of Islamic education such as Qur’anic studies, akidah (faith), tasawuf (spiritual purification), and fikah (Islamic jurisprudence) tailored for adult participants.

Regarding Qur’anic studies, he said participants learn not just tajwid, but also deepen their understanding of the Qur’an to improve their recitation and comprehension.

“The akidah module covers the foundations of Islamic belief, including the correct understanding of the attributes of Allah SWT, the role of prophets, and related concepts,” he said.

The tasawuf component, he added, focuses on purifying the heart and cultivating good character traits, while the fikah module teaches practical religious rulings, especially on prayer, based on the Shafi’i school of thought.

For children of former GISBH members, MAIS uses the JAIS Pendidikan Insani (Holistic Education) Module. This module aims to nurture children’s personality and potential in a comprehensive and integrated way, guided by divine revelation and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad SAW. It covers areas such as akidah (faith), ibadah (acts of worship), and akhlak (morality).

“Therefore, the claim circulating on social media that the rehabilitation programme only focuses on tajwid is inaccurate and misleading,” Ahmad Shahir said.

Previously, the media reported that a total of 2,474 former GISBH members, including 1,410 children, are taking part in the insan Rabbani programme, which began on Feb 15 and continues until August, involving several phases of rehabilitation.
