Iran Police Crackdown On Headscarf Violators;
“Removing Hijab Is Considered A Crime Within The Framework Of The Law”
April 15, 2023
Iran's police forces stand on a street amid the
implementation of the new hijab surveillance in Tehran, Iran, April 15, 2023.
(REUTERS)
----------
TEHRAN: Police in Iran said on Saturday they have
implemented a plan to deal with women who violate the country’s dress code.
The number of women defying the dress code that
headscarves must be worn in public has increased since a protest movement
triggered by the death in custody last year of Kurdish-Iranian MahsaAmini, 22,
for allegedly flouting it.
A statement on the police website on Saturday said
action would be taken “from today” over violations in public places, in cars
and other “sites where hijab is sometimes removed.”
“Removing hijab is considered a crime, and the police
deal with social anomalies within the framework of the law,” the statement
quoted Security Police chief Hassan Mofakhami as saying.
A wave of civil protest swept the Islamic republic
after Amini’s death last Sept. 16, three days after her arrest by the morality
police.
Thousands of people were arrested, hundreds killed —
including members of the security forces — and four people executed because of
the civil unrest following Amini’s death, with Iran labelling the protests as
foreign-instigated “riots.”
He said in such cases a warning would be issued, but
“if the warning is repeated, the closure of the business will be on the
agenda.”
Car owners would also receive a warning text if any
passengers violated the dress code, and their vehicles would be seized if the
offense was repeated.
In late March, the head of the judiciary,
Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, said “removing hijab amounts to enmity toward
values and people who commit such abnormality will be punished.”

Taliban Bans Video Games, Music, Foreign Films
Branding Them As un-Islamic In Afghan City of Herat
16 Apr, 2023

-----------
Kabul: The Taliban-led Afghan government has banned
video games, foreign films and music in the western city of Herat, branding
them as un-Islamic, the media reported.
The ban imposed by the Ministry for the Promotion of
Virtue and Prevention of Vice, which came without warning, has forced more than
400 businesses in Herat to close, RFE/RL reported.
It followed crackdowns on other forms of leisure and
entertainment that clash with the Taliban's extremist interpretation of Islamic
Shari'a law.
In October 2022, the group shut cafes offering hookahs
-- the smoking of which is a popular pastime among Afghan men -- across the
country.
Earlier in May, the Taliban banned men and women from
eating together in Herat's restaurants and shut down women-owned and women-run
restaurants in the city, RFE/RL reported.
The impact of Taliban restrictions on businesses is
conspicuous in Herat, an ancient centre of cultural and intellectual life in
the Muslim world that lies at a strategic crossroads leading to Iran and
Turkmenistan.

Muslims Turning The Tide In The School Culture Wars;
Stuyvesant High School, New York City
Cancels Single-Sex Swim Lessons
By BETSY McCAUGHY
16-04-2023
McCaughey
Joe Henson
--------
In a slap to Muslim girls at Stuyvesant High School,
the school is cancelling single-sex swim lessons, even though swim instruction
is required to graduate. That forces the girls to choose between preserving
their modesty and getting a diploma.
Count on Muslim families to fight back and likely
prevail. Nationwide, Muslims are taking up the battle in schools to protect
traditional religious values, including modesty.
Move over, Roman Catholics, evangelical Christians and
conservative Jews. Reinforcements have arrived, and they’re turning the tide.
Even in the Ivy League. After weeks of protests by
female Muslim students, Yale University is switching its campus housing policy
for the coming academic year to offer single-gender dorms and bathrooms.
From Michigan to Virginia, Muslim parents are showing
up at local school board meetings to oppose graphic sex education and gender
fluidity indoctrination. Their engagement is impacting politics. More Muslims
are voting Republican, concluding that the Democratic Party is trampling
Islamist values.
In Dearborn, Michigan, left-wing Democratic Rep.
Rashida Tlaib opposed the Muslim parents in her district protesting sexually
explicit materials in school.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration continues its
lurch to the extreme left. President Joe Biden’s Department of Education
announced double-barreled rule changes last week, one favoring transgender
athletes in elementary and middle school, and the other revoking a Trump-era
commitment by the department to protect religious clubs and associations on
college campuses. Flipping the bird to people of faith twice in a single week.
Sexual modesty is a core value in Islam. Muslims
observe a dress code and guard against physical contact between sexes once
students reach adolescence.
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects an
employee’s right to practice religion in the workplace, but there is no
comparable statutory protection for students. Muslims are waging the battle one
campus demonstration and school board meeting at a time, often winning.
Muslims are powerful at Yale. In 2021, undergrads
elected a Muslim woman to be student body president. And on March 10, Yale
acceded to demands from the Muslim Student Association, Orthodox Jews at Yale
and other religious groups to provide single-sex campus housing. Muslim women
students had protested that with men in the bathroom, they couldn’t even remove
their hijab.
Modesty is the issue at Stuyvesant High School, too.
Brian Moran, assistant principal of physical education, told the student
newspaper that the girls’ single-sex swim classes clashed with other scheduling
priorities. He made it sound like a mere scheduling inconvenience was
justification enough for the change, and told the girls to wear full-body
burkinis. Sorry, but those still cling to the body when wet.
New York City’s Board of Education website promises
trans students “alternative arrangements” for anyone with “a need or desire for
increased privacy.” Why should Muslim students get less? One in every 10
students in the city’s school system is Muslim.
Last September, Muslim women at Syracuse University
waged a battle for swim time without men in the college pool and won a
concession that starts next fall.
In Utah, the Muslim Civic League worked with the Sikh
and Jewish communities to pass a state law in February allowing school athletes
to wear turbans, hijabs and modest pants and tops in competition instead of the
regulation form fitting uniforms.
Luna Banuri, the league’s executive director, said:
“All faiths have modesty standards. We believe this affects multiple
communities.” Maryland and Illinois recently passed similar laws.
In Bethel, Ohio, a coalition of Muslim and Christian
parents are suing to preserve single-sex bathrooms and locker rooms and halt a
rule change that would allow biological boys to use the girls’ facilities.
Most Muslims still vote Democratic, but the shift is
beginning. According to a Wall Street Journal exit poll, 28% voted Republican
in the 2022 midterms, a double-digit increase over the 2018 midterms.

Islamic Cleric, Christian Politician Advocate
Religious Tolerance At Ajadi Ramadan Lecture
By: Ayo Esan
April 16, 2023
Renowned Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Mohammed Buhari Omo
Musa and the Managing Director of Bullion Go-Neat Global Limited and the New
Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) gubernatorial candidate in Ogun State, Ambassador
Olufemi AjadiOguntoyinbo, have advocated for religious tolerance among
Nigerians, irrespective of their beliefs and ethics affiliations, for peaceful
coexistence.
They stated this during the maiden edition of the
Ramadan lecture organised by Ambassador Olufemi AjadiOguntoyinbo through his
NGO, Ajadi Movement, at the weekend, at Ibafo, Ogun state.
Delivering his sermon, Buhari Omo Musa said there
might be little difference in the doctrine of Islam and Christianity but both
pray and worship the same God, hence, the need to tolerate one another for
peaceful coexistence in the country.
The renowned Islamic preacher noted that religious
sentiment has eaten deep into the society, which is not in the best interest of
the country and the way forward for Nigerians.
He urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the peaceful
coexistence, love and unity of the country, which has almost eluded the country
due to personal and political gains.
He appealed to political leaders in the country at
various levels to keep working for continued peace, unity and progress in the country,
arguing that, “no one can lead without a united and peaceful country”.
Also speaking to journalists at the lecture, Ajadi, a
Christian and frontline politician in Ogun state, said he organised the Ramadan
lecture to demonstrate one of the leadership traits of not being sentimental
about religion.
The NNPP guber candidate in Ogun state disclosed that
he had lived most of his life with Muslims to the extent that the love,
accorded him, made him learn Arabic studies.
“But of recent, even within religions, you will see
that we have factions. We should not allow religion to disintegrate us instead
of uniting us. Religion should not be an instrument of disintegration but of
harmony and peace. Religion is given to man by God for our edification and not
otherwise.
“We really need to pray for our dear country. Years
back, this country was not like this. Now people, for their personal or
political gains, have decided to tour along a religious line, which is
dangerous and really sad. I am a Christian, lived with Muslims, I attended
Quranic school, we never knew differences in religion.
“We were together and played together. Your best
friend could be a Christian if you are a Muslim or Muslim if you are a
Christian. Even we have both religions as members of the same family. So, we
need to tolerate each other for the betterment of this entity call Nigeria”.
Ajadi also used the occasion to launch multi-million
naira musical instruments for the benefit of upcoming musicians at an avoidable
and subsidizing rate.

He also highlighted the need for enhancing business

Iranian Official Blames School Poisonings on Students
April 15, 2023
Dozens of schools in several provinces of Iran have
been targeted by gas and chemical attacks that began in November, but now two
officials in President Ebrahim Raisi's government are asserting the spate of
school poisonings was "the mischief of the students."
"The few cases of poisoning that occurred in
[the] girls' schools were very limited. The mischief of some students was to
close the classes," Seyyed Majid Mirahmadi, deputy minister of the
Interior Ministry, said Saturday.
"In the statements of the Ministry of Interior
regarding the recent events in some schools, everything has been explained, and
with the beginning of the school year, all the schools are active, and all the
students are studying," he added.
However, VOA's Persian service observed credible
reports of incidents in 14 cities on April 14. Those reports, which VOA cannot
independently verify because it is barred from reporting in Iran, came from the
cities of Amol, Borujerd, Ganaveh, Isfahan, Kamyaran, Karaj, Kermanshah,
Mashhad, Oshnavieh, Shahin Shahr, Tabriz, Tehran, Urmia and Zanjan.

BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Being in line with the
interests of the Afghan people and the expectations of the international
community, China's position paper on the Afghan issue will help Afghanistan
achieve peace and development at an early date, as well as play a positive and
constructive role in maintaining regional prosperity and stability, said
experts.
In the position paper released on Wednesday, China
expressed support for prudent governance and reconstruction of Afghanistan and
its counter-terrorism efforts. It also urged the United States to live up to
its commitments to and responsibilities for Afghanistan and called for

political support to Afghanistan.
Afghanistan understands China's security concerns,
will never allow any forces to use the Afghan territory to harm China's
national interests, and will spare no efforts to protect the safety of Chinese

Homelessness to hope: How Ashrayan project is enabling
Bangladesh’s inclusive growth
Sahidul Hasan Khokon
Apr 15, 2023
By Sahidul Hasan Khokon: Moksedul, a brick kiln
labourer, was given birth to in someone else's house. His son, too, was
welcomed in a house that did not belong to Moksedul. For 30 long years,
Mokseful waited for a house that he can call his own. His long-desired wish has
been fulfilled at last, after he has been allotted a semi-furnished house under
his own name. All modern facilities, including electricity and drinking water,
are available in the house. Moksedul is on cloud nine after receiving this gift
from Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He said he can live very well
with his family now.
Sixty-five-year-old Piara Begum is a resident of
Patharghata in Barguna, the southernmost town of the country, built on the
shores of the Bay of Bengal. Thirty years ago, her family was lost in the
river. Afterwards, she would build a house on the bank of the river. After
marriage, her husband did not have any property or house and the couple
continued to live on the banks of the river. But 16 years ago, her husband died
of cancer. As she had no children, Begum was left to her own devices.
Finally, Piara Begum's misery has come to an end after
she is allotted a house built by the Bangladesh government on the occasion of
‘Mujib centenary’ under the ‘Ashrayan' scheme.

POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that in March, after the 2023

Although some blogs have claimed that the incoming

Muslim Students' Association offered free meals to
help students trying to balance exams with Ramadan
Apr 15, 2023
The university centre on Memorial University's campus
is busy with students picking up takeout meals.
It's been like this for a week now. Most — but not all
of the students — are Muslim, getting ready for their iftar meal, the breaking
of the daily dawn-to-dusk fast during the holy month of Ramadan.
This year, the fasting, the prayer, the public service
— all staples of Ramadan — are competing with the students' rush to prepare
for, and finish, final assignments and exams.
"But y'know what? They also look relieved,
because they don't have to make food at home," she said. "So they're
like 'OK, I can come here, get my food, and I don't have to worry.'"

By Sulaimon Salau
16 April 2023
The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of Jama’atuNasril Islam (JNI), Alhaji Muhammadu
Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Nigerians to use the last ten days of the holy
month of Ramadan to pray for the country’s well-being, stability, security,
development and economic propensity.
JNI, in a statement issued by its Secretary General,
Dr Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, said the last ten days come with the most sacred of
nights, the ‘night of majesty’, better than a thousand nights.

Sustain lessons of Ramadan as Eid-el-fitr beckons,
muslims urged
By Guardian Nigeria
16 April 2023
As Nigerian Muslims prepare to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr
this week, marking the end of the month-long Ramadan fasting, Muslim clerics
have stressed the need for the faithful to consolidate the lessons learnt
during the period. They have also reminded political leaders to discharge their
constitutional obligation of governance, which is welfare and security of the
citizenry.
The National Missioner/Chief Imam of Ar-Rahmat
Islamiyyah Association of Nigeria, Ikeja, Lagos, Sheikh Ishaq Adebayo Tejidini,
who acknowledged the fact that the period of Ramadan indeed offered so much for
the Muslim faithful, appealed to every Muslim who participated in this year’s
Ramadan not to go back to evil any more, but should sustain the faith and fear
of God they received during Ramadan.
In his words: “There’s no doubt, we learnt so much
during the period. The period is indeed a spiritual aspect of our life, which
comes only once in a year. And every true Muslim must have benefitted from this
spiritual obligation, which we embarked for 29 or 30 days abstaining from
eating, drinking and fleshly desires, all this is to impact the spiritual
aspect of life and if truly it is observed as it is supposed to be, by now
every Muslim must have achieved many things from it and what that means, is
that, as Muslims our faith and fear of God have increased. He continued: “For
instance, a wealthy Muslim who has everything will witness how the poor people
are managing and what they are going through because they have food and drink
but can’t eat it, or drink it, as they want throughout that period. I think
such adherents who deny themselves from bodily pleasures have increased their
faith, unless the person is not sincere with his or her spiritual life. So in a
nutshell, your faith and fear of God should be
“Then, looking at the impact of this on Nigerians, I
think is that since it is a spiritual obligation from Almighty Allah even those
who are not Muslims they respect the period and truly the air of that spiritual
reward is blowing on everybody who cares. They would know that during this
period, things have changed for good. During this period, evil is reduced
because Allah’s injunctions are being adhered to. That is the impact it has on
Nigerians as a whole.”
To sustain the lessons, the Chief Imam noted that the
devil is powerful and can deceive anybody who is not spiritually alert.
Tejidini said: “We should know that the devil is powerful and can deceive
anybody who is not spiritually alert, and so every Muslim should make up his or
her mind not to go back to those evil things Allah has enabled us to overcome
during the Ramadan period. Adherents of the faith should try to be a good
person from now on, otherwise if you go back to those evil things you have
abandoned during the period in question, it will not profit your spiritual life
and that is not the desire of Allah for any true Muslim. And I pray and hope
that majority of us who have participated in this year’s Ramadan will not go
back to evil any more. It reduces evil from the minds of the people most
especially those who practise that spiritual aspect of it sincerely. I’m a
Muslim is not a mere worship or lip service, it must reflect in your actions as
well.”
Musa said: “Islam is a religion for all times. All the
acts of worship during Ramadan including fasting should be continued on a
voluntary basis in the other months of the year. It is noteworthy that many
political leaders fulfilled their covenant with Allah during Ramadan. Some even
embarked on the Umrah (Lesser Hajj). They should keep their promises to the
people.”
He added that, “Allah says, “O believers, Honour your
obligations” (Quran 5:1). The poor and the needy who have been honoured and
supported within the fasting month should not be abandoned after Ramadan. There
should be strategic plans to permanently lift the vulnerable out of poverty.
Mosques and other worship centres should be able to partner with government and
philanthropists in the identification and care for the downtrodden.

What happens to leftovers from Ramadan bazaars? It all
starts as soon as Maghrib ‘azan’ goes out
By ShahrinAizatNoorshahrizam
16 Apr 2023
KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 — During Ramadan, the “azan” or
call to prayer at dusk during the Maghrib time indicates the time for Muslims
to break their day-long fast.
Part of a nationwide programme called Malaysia Save
Food Programme (MySaveFood), the group called Gema Youth Organisation Malaysia
would collect unsold items in Ramadan bazaars every Maghrib — ready to
redistribute various types of excess food and drinks to the less fortunate
including the homeless, low-income families, low-cost flats and mosques.
“Since we have been doing this for three years
straight, the traders already expected us and it made the process a lot
easier,” said Adamsyam Daniel Syamsyawal, who heads the collection team for the
Kampung Baru bazaar here.
“The traders already know that we are coming so they
put their unsold items, nicely packed, on a table, so we can just say thank you
and put the food or drink in our tote bags,” he said as he wiped off the sweat
on his forehead.
When Malay Mail caught up with them last week, the
team made of 15 to 20 Gema volunteers were converging at Restoran Rose, an
Indonesian diner which was more than happy to allow them to use it as a
temporary headquarters.

Qatar Foundation’s Siraj Uses Storytelling, Animation
To Teach Children About Islamic Values
16 Apr 202
Doha: This Ramadan, Qatar Foundation is screening a
series of special episodes of Siraj, its 3D edutainment TV series, that are religiously
significant and offer an engaging way for children to learn Islamic values and
morals.
Sulaiman Timbo Bah, Community Engagement and Outreach
Coordinator at MinareteinCenter (Education City Mosque), helped review the
religious content of Siraj. “In this digital age, with technology and the
internet being a big part of our lives, it is essential to have a program like
Siraj for our children. It is a much-needed initiative that provides them with
an opportunity to learn moral and ethical values.
“The programme’s series on the Prophets and their
teachings provides an excellent opportunity to instil values that are essential
for children’s overall growth and development. Each episode focuses on a
specific ethical or moral value, such as patience and courage, from an Islamic
perspective. It is a great way to teach children about the attributes of the
Prophets and how to emulate them in their lives. Although Islam provides us
with a wealth of resources, I believe that some of these resources lack the element
of fun. That’s where we come in. We aim to unpack these values and stories in a
way that’s both enjoyable and informative for children.”
According to Bah, when the content was created, they
focused on using language that is simple and accessible to young audiences, and
also tried to imagine how viewers would perceive the stories, as some of them
require certain background knowledge to fully appreciate and understand the
lessons.

protesters forced their way into the Aintree grounds to disrupt one of the

Police said they had arrested 118 people on suspicion

protesters sought to scale the perimeter fence and access the track to prevent
the 40 horses from starting the race.
Officers were seen pinning some protesters in pink
tops to the ground while others were pulled from ladders. Television footage
showed a few protesters making it on to the track and trying to attach

Defying protests, Macron signs France pension law raising
retirement age to 64
By BAPTISTE PACE
16-04-2023
PARIS (AFP) — French President Emmanuel Macron signed
his unpopular pension reform into law on Saturday, prompting accusations from
unions and the left that he was showing “contempt” for those behind a
three-month protest movement.
The amendments became law after the text was published
before dawn in France’s official journal, with the livid opposition claiming
that Macron had moved to smuggle it through under cover of night.
The publication came just hours after the approval on
Friday by the Constitutional Council of the essence of the legislation,
including the headline change of raising the retirement age from 62 to 64.
The standoff with unions and the left has become the
biggest challenge of the second mandate of Macron, who will now address France
on the crisis on Monday evening, the Elysee presidential palace said.

Does Gulzar Imam’s arrest mean much?
Imtiaz Gul
April 16, 2023
Pakistani authorities recently announced the arrest of
Gulzar Imam, the mastermind of the separatist militant organisation Baloch
National Army (BNA). His “arrest” came about through a sting operation that
was, according to official claims, spread over several geographical locations.
Authorities did not name the countries but we can assume the arrest happened
somewhere in Turkiye. BNA sources had claimed Imam went missing in November
last year.
Does this mean anything at all in the multi-pronged
insurgency that various Baloch insurgent groups, including BNA, are currently
engaged in? Baloch Raji Ajoi Sangar (BRAS) is the other alliance comprising the
Baloch Republican Army (BRA), Baloch Liberation Army (Bashirzeb Baloch
faction), Balochistan Liberation Front, and Baloch Republican Guards.
On July 25, 2020 BRAS had stitched up an operational
alliance with Sindhudesh Revolutionary Army (SRA), a Sindhi ethno-nationalist
militant group, followed by similar cooperation with TTP and ISKP in 2021-2022.
No surprise that Baloch groups now deploy suicide attacks as one of the tools
to inflict loss on the security apparatus in particular. Who Is Gulzar Imam ?
Gulzar Imam alias (Shambay), 45, belongs to the Panjgur-Parom area of
Balochistan.
