Iran urges Muslims to condemn Trump's Gaza plan in emergency OIC meeting

09-02-2025

Palestinians, who were displaced to the south at Israel's order during the war, make their way as they return to their homes in northern Gaza, amid a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, in Gaza City, January 29.

-----------

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) must convene an emergency meeting to condemn Donald Trump's plan to seek US ownership of the Gaza Strip and move out its population, Iran's top diplomat told his Muslim counterparts on Saturday.

During a joint news conference in Washington on Tuesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said that he envisioned the US assuming control over the Gaza Strip, relocating its residents elsewhere, and transforming the war-ravaged coastal area into what he called the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

In separate phone calls with his Egyptian, Turkish and Pakistani counterparts, Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi called for an emergency meeting of the OIC to "adopt a unified and firm stance in countering this plot against the fate of the Palestinian people."

"The forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza is a colonialist conspiracy to erase Palestine and a serious threat to regional stability and security," Araghchi told Egypt's Badr Abdelatty.

Trump's proposal has already sparked outrage in the Middle East, including in Egypt and Jordan, two close allies of Washington which Trump has suggested can take in the Palestinians.

A report by Israel's Channel 12 says Trump is also considering Morocco, Puntland, and Somaliland as other possible options for the relocation of Palestinians.

Muzaffarabad police break up PTI protests, place leaders under house arrest

-------------

MUZAFFARABAD: Police used tear gas and batons to disperse activists and leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Friday as they protested against alleged rigging in last year’s general elections in Pakistan, purportedly in violation of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The confrontation initially erupted outside the Press Club before intensifying near Domel, where PTI activists clashed with law enforcement personnel.

Several PTI workers, including the party’s regional vice president Zeeshan Haider Kazmi, councillor Hamid Jamil, Munna Shah, and Malik Ansar, were taken into custody. While officials did not confirm the number of arrests, sources estimated that at least 20 activists were detained, most of whom were released later in the evening.

Video footage showed police chasing and striking protesters near Quaid-e-Azam Bridge in Domel, where PTI’s regional president and former AJK prime minister Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi was leading the demonstration. As the protesters attempted to march toward the Press Club, police fired tear gas shells and resorted to baton charges to push them back.

Amid the chaos, a Suzuki van, reportedly fitted with a sound system for the protest, caught fire in Domel. The cause of the fire remained unclear.

“This is fascism… this is oppression,” a visibly enraged Mr Niazi said. “We won’t allow this to continue. We will call for a shutter-down and wheel-jam strike in response.”

Authorities later escorted Mr Niazi to the residence of PTI’s district president, Azhar Gillani, in Rawani, where he was placed under house arrest.

Earlier, another group of PTI activists had gathered separately outside the Press Club, but their demonstration was also broken up by police, reportedly resulting in further arrests.

“If they think that using brute force against Imran Khan’s loyalists will deter them from responding to his calls, they are gravely mistaken,” said PTI councillor Zulfiqar Baig from the Plate neighbourhood of Muzaffarabad.

Leader of the Opposition Khawaja Farooq Ahmed and former minister Hanif Awan were also removed from outside the Press Club and placed under house arrest at their respective residences.

08 Feb 2025

Adviser Dr. AFM Khalid Hossain. File Photo

----------

DHAKA, Feb 08, 2025 (BSS) - Religious Affairs Adviser Dr. AFM Khalid Hossain today said Muslims must be united in light with the holy Quran and Sunnah for greater interest shunning  all differences.

“Importance of Sunnah is immense for Muslims. If we deviate from this Sunnah, bid’ah (innovation of religious matters will engulf us,” he told a discussion on the importance of Sunnah in Muslim life on Kaichabari Road in Ashulia, according to a press release.

Noting Tawheed and Risalat are the two basic principles of Islam, Khalid said if shirk takes place, Tawheed departs, and if bid’ah takes place, Sunnah departs so that Muslims must hold on to both Tawheed and Sunnah.

“There is no compromise with shirk. Similarly, we cannot compromise with bid’ah. Everyone should be careful in this regard,” he said.

Religious scholar and Senior Advisor to the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia  Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahed Abdullah Al-Arifi, Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Issa bin Youssef Al-Duhailan and Religious Affairs Attaché of the Saudi Embassy in Dhaka Mubarak bin Amek Al Anaz also spoke with Bangladesh Jamiat Ahle Hadith President Professor Dr. Abdullah Farooq in the chair.

Hafiz of Pakistan's Harakatul Quran Wassunnah Allama Shaykh Engineer Ibtisam Ilahi Zahir and leaders of Ahle Hadith were also present.

Were Muslims more tolerant before Madani?

S Thayaparan

Feb 9, 2025

“For centuries, we have lived and intermingled harmoniously. Muslims are well aware of the do’s and don’ts of their religion - there is no need for external dictates on our behaviour,”

To be clear, “tolerant” is an odious word that is indicative of how fascistic lingual norms have become normalised in the Malaysian political and social landscapes.

Democratic societies are accepting or empathic of cultural and religious differences but fascistic societies tolerate such differences in the pursuit of compromised political stability.

The recent announcement of guidelines for Muslims attending non-Muslim religious events by the prime minister’s religious czar was brazen in its disdain for religions other than that of the religion of the state.

It is a shocking display of the normalisation of demonising other religions and the fact that it happened in Parliament should tell us everything we need to know about...

Saudi Arabia reiterates rejection of Israeli comments on displacement of Palestinians from their land

Arab News

February 09, 2025

------------

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Sunday reiterated its categorical rejection of statements regarding the displacement of the Palestinian people from their land, particularly those made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Kingdom’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it rejected “such statements that aim to divert attention from the continuous crimes committed by the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian brothers in Gaza, including the ethnic cleansing they are subjected to.”

The ministry likewise expressed its appreciation of the “condemnation, disapproval and total rejection announced by the brotherly countries” regarding the Israeli leader’s comments.

“The Kingdom also points out that this extremist, occupying mentality does not understand what the Palestinian land means to the brotherly people of Palestine and their emotional, historical and legal connection to this land, and it does not think that the Palestinian people deserve to live in the first place, as it has completely destroyed the Gaza Strip, killed and injured more than 160,000, most of them children and women, without the slightest human feeling or moral responsibility,” the Saudi Foreign Ministry statement said.

“The Kingdom affirms that the Palestinian people have a right to their land, and they are not intruders or immigrants to it who can be expelled whenever the brutal Israeli occupation wishes.

“The Kingdom notes that the proponents of these extremist ideas are the ones who prevented Israel from accepting peace by refusing peaceful coexistence, rejecting the peace initiatives adopted by the Arab countries, and systematically practicing injustice toward the Palestinian people for more than 75 years, with disregard to the truth, justice, law and the values established in the United Nations Charter, including the human’s right to live in dignity on his land,” the statement added.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry also reiterated that the right of the Palestinian people “will remain firmly established and no one will be able to take it away from them no matter how long it takes.”

It added lasting peace would only be achieved by “returning to the logic of reason and accepting the principle of peaceful coexistence through the two-state solution.”

Egypt earlier condemned as “irresponsible” statements by Israeli officials suggesting establishing a Palestinian state on Saudi territory, with its Foreign Ministry emphasizing that the suggestion was a “direct infringement of Saudi sovereignty.” It added that the Kingdom’s security was a “red line for Egypt.”

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry described the Israeli remarks as “inflammatory and a clear violation of international law, relevant UN resolutions and state sovereignty.”

Spokesperson Sufian Qudah criticized what he described as Israel’s continued provocative policies and rhetoric, stressing that such statements reflect an exclusionary and hostile approach that undermines regional stability, Petra reported.

Jordan, he added, stands in full solidarity with Saudi Arabia against these statements, urging international actors to take a firm stance against irresponsible rhetoric that threatens peace efforts.

The UAE also strongly condemned and denounced Netanyahu’s “reprehensible and provocative” statements regarding the establishment of a Palestinian state in Saudi Arabia and “affirmed its categorical rejection of these unacceptable statements.”

Russia’s war losses in Ukraine near 850,000 troops, General Staff says

February 9, 2025

At the beginning of January, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry estimated that 430,790 Russian soldiers had been killed in 2024 alone—a force equivalent to nearly 36 motorized rifle divisions of Russia’s Ground Forces.

On Jan. 10, the BBC reported that since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin has lost at least 6,083 elite personnel, including special forces, paratroopers, and high-ranking officers.

On Jan. 23, The New York Times reported that Russian losses are twice as high as Ukraine’s, but Moscow still retains numerical superiority. Citing military experts, the newspaper estimated that after nearly three years of full-scale war, Ukraine has likely suffered around half of Russia’s irrecoverable losses.

On Feb. 3, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry reported that Russian irrecoverable and medical losses for January 2025 alone amounted to 48,240 personnel.

Meanwhile, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) stated in a Feb. 4 update that Russia is struggling to recruit enough new soldiers to compensate for its battlefield losses. ISW analysts noted that Russia’s monthly conscription rate is equal to or lower than its casualty rate in Ukraine, raising concerns about the Kremlin’s ability to sustain its offensive operations.

Truth can be hard to tell from fiction these days. Every viewpoint has its audience of backers and supporters, no matter how absurd.

If conscious disinformation is reinforced by state propaganda apparatus and budget, its outcomes may become deadly.

There is no solution to this, other than independent, honest, and accurate reporting.

We remain committed to empowering the Ukrainian voice to push against the muck.

Mary shows us new depths of the spiritual life

By Father Jeffrey

Feb 9, 2025

In the history of the spiritual life of the Church, devotion to Mary has always held a prominent and beloved place. As Christians have sought to draw close to the Lord Jesus, they have naturally turned to Mary and asked for her help and guidance.

As we turn to Jesus through Mary, various formal prayers have emerged. Such prayers have given encouragement and consolation to believers through the ages.

Within the universal nature of the Church, which is vast and covers countless cultures and expressions, there is a revered collection of diverse but complementary prayers to Mary.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church makes the observation: “Medieval piety in the West developed the prayer of the rosary as a popular substitute for the Liturgy of the Hours. In the East, the litany called the Akathistos and the Paraclesis remained closer to the choral office in the Byzantine churches, while the Armenian, Coptic, and Syriac traditions preferred popular hymns and songs to the Mother of God.”

The various cultural and spiritual traditions of the Church have given believers different prayers to Mary, but they are all united in their love and devotion to her. The Catechism makes the point: “But in the Ave Maria, the theotokia, the hymns of St. Ephrem or St. Gregory of Narek, the tradition of prayer is basically the same.”

While there are differences in emphases, themes, and languages, the heart of the believer who wants to turn to Mary is always the same. The aspirations of the heart are the source of unity. It is the heart that gives a common thread to all the prayers and devotions found in the Church’s universal spiritual treasury.

By turning our hearts to Mary, we experience a whole new horizon of prayer. By her gentle guidance, Mary shows us new depths of the spiritual life. No one comes close to Mary in her prayerfulness and attentiveness to God. There are many lessons we can learn from her, if we turn to her with trust and allow her to teach us.

The Catechism teaches: “Mary is the perfect Orans (prayer), a figure of the Church. When we pray to her, we are adhering with her to the plan of the Father, who sends his Son to save all men.”

Mary is the maternal figure of the Church. She is everything that we are called to be. In her, we see the fulfillment of our own spiritual destiny. When we walk with her and let her instruct us in the ways of God, we become better Christians and share more deeply in the mission of Jesus Christ.

The maternal role of Mary should never be dismissed or seen as insignificant. We all need a spiritual mother, especially those who think they don’t. And we can all benefit from Mary’s relationship with God and her intense spiritual life.

As fallen human beings who are doing our best, we need all the help we can get and Mary is the best of help. She shows us the way of the Lord Jesus and gives us the encouragement and guidance we need to persevere and follow the Lord’s way with faithfulness and devotion. There is no greater help to prayer than Mary, the very one who perfected prayer.

As Saint John was given Mary and welcome her into his home, so we are called to welcome Mary into the interior home of our hearts. There is no need for suspicion. She is no idol. She is no barrier. Mary is only the handmaid of the Lord who prays, loves, and gives all things to him. We can trust this docile handmaid.

The Catechism explains: “Like the beloved disciple, we welcome Jesus’ mother into our homes, for she has become the mother of all the living. We can pray with and to her. The prayer of the Church is sustained by the prayer of Mary and united with it in hope.”

While there is much to learn about prayer from Mary, we are also humbled by the realization that the very prayer of the Church is already united to her prayer and could not be sustained without it. As our mother, she carries the prayer of the whole Church. The life and the very destiny of the Church lies in her maternal praise of God.

Police confirm abduction of Imam, others during prayer in Sokoto

February 8, 2025

THE Sokoto State Police command has confirmed the abduction of persons during a Muslim early morning prayer in Bushe community, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesman of the state police command, Ahmed Rufai, in a telephone chat with The ICIR on Saturday, February 8, confirmed the incident.

According to him, the incident took place during the Subhi (early morning) prayer, leaving the community in a state of shock and panic.

“The incident happened truly but I don’t know the actual number of people involved. We have some network issues in that place. I have been trying to reach the DPO, but I could not get him.”

Rufai said an investigation into the incident was ongoing, and urged the public  to remain calm and cooperate with the security agencies.

Reports say the gunmen, who have been terrorising the community for some time, struck despite the presence of security agents, operating under Operation FASAN YAMMA.

The incident has raised concerns about the security situation in the area, and the community is calling for increased protection and support from the authorities.

According to Sa’idu Ibrahim, a member of the Sokoto State Assembly, at least 10 people were taken, but it could have been much worse if not for the intervention of the troops from Operation Fasan Yamma.

He said the community is still trying to come to terms with what happened and is working to ensure the safe release of those who were abducted.

The ICIR reported that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Christopher Musa, in December 2024, accused two communities hit by the military during an air raid on the Lakurawa terrorist group in Sokoto State of harbouring the gang.

Musa said this while visiting troops of Operation FASAN YANMA at 8 Division Headquarters in Sokoto, where he addressed the Christmas Day bombing of civilians in two communities in Silame Local Government Area by the Nigerian Air Force.

Musa said the airstrike, intended to neutraliseLakurawa terrorists mistakenly hit Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities, resulting in the deaths of villagers and wounding several others.

He suggested that the villagers were to blame for allegedly harbouring terrorists, stating that the military would not take responsibility for attacks on communities supporting terrorists.

The military chief called on all Nigerians not to harbour suspected criminals in their midst but to expose and distance themselves from them.

The CDS urged the media to minimise publicity for bandits and other criminal elements. He also stated that Nigeria would not permit any foreign military base on its soil.

He also called on neighbouring countries, including Niger, Chad, and Benin, to collaborate with Nigeria in combating forces that threaten peace.

Hamas Leaders Meet With Ayatollah Khamenei as Israeli Hostages Exchanged

By Mandy Taheri

February 08, 2025

Senior Hamas leaders met with Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the country's president Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday, coinciding with the Iran-backed militant group's fifth hostage-prisoner exchange with Israel. Newsweek has reached out to Iran's Foreign Ministry for comment via email on Saturday. Why It Matters Over the past few weeks, as part of the temporary ceasefire deal with Israel, the Palestinian militant group has released 21 hostages to Israel which in return has freed 550 Palestinian prisoners. Iran has backed Hamas for decades, with notable support during the current Israel-Hamas war, which is temporarily paused. What To Know Chairman of the Hamas Shura council Muhammad Ismail Darwish, deputy chairman of the Hamas political bureau Khalil al-Hayya, and Hamas political bureau member Nizar Awadallah, met with Iran's top leaders on Saturday, just days before the 46th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran. The trio met with Khamenei and Pezeshkian separately. The meetings come after over 15 months of war between Israel and Hamas. On October 7, 2023, Hamas attacked Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages. Following that attack, Israel launched several ground and air operations in Gaza and closed off essential aid access points. The small enclave has been devastated by the war, bombings and a lack of humanitarian aid. Israel has killed more than 47,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. At least 1.9 million people—about 90 percent of the population—have been internally displaced by Israeli bombardments, according to the United Nations. The ceasefire has allowed thousands of Palestinians to return to their destroyed homes in northern Gaza in recent days. In a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter, mirroring meeting notes from Iran's state news agency IRNA, Iran's Supreme Leader praised Hamas and Palestinians, writing: "The people of Gaza prevailed over the Zionist regime. In fact, they prevailed over the United States, and by God's grace, they didn't allow the US to attain any of its goals." Iran's Supreme Leader has repeatedly criticized U.S. support for Israel, which receives billions in U.S. military aid and is a key diplomatic ally. The U.S. and Iran haven't shared formal diplomatic relations in over four decades. In another, he wrote: "The ultimate result of all the sufferings of the people of Gaza was the victory of truth over falsehood, and they became a role model for all those devoted to the cause of the Resistance." He reiterated that "the issue of Palestine for us is a main issue, and Palestine's victory is for us a definitive matter." IRNA reported that Hamas leaders congratulated Khamenei on the upcoming anniversary of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which brought his predecessor, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, to power. Also on Saturday, in Gaza City, Hamas freed three hostages, Eli Sharabi, 52, Or Levy, 34, and Ohad Ben Ami, 56. Hours later, Israel released 183 Palestinian prisoners. A previous temporary ceasefire agreement led to the release

New Islamic Museum of Art exhibit shines spotlight on Iraq

By BARRY DAVIS

FEBRUARY 8, 2025

Museums the world over have, for some time now, been wrestling with the problem of diminishing attendance and how to reinvent themselves.

Some have overhauled their programming purview, while others have embraced ever more daring hi-tech platforms for presenting various artistic disciplines.

The Museum for Islamic Art has gone for a relatively straightforward and eminently rational move by opening a new gallery tailored to introduce a fresh dimension to the institution’s wares. As I followed museum general director Gilad Levian up the stairs from his office, we climbed and climbed – a couple of floors higher than I’d ever been in the venerable building.

“This used to be the museum library,” he explained as we reached the uppermost level and he opened the door to a spacious, high-ceiling room with an abundance of natural light. It immediately felt inviting.

IRGC commanders reaffirm allegiance to Imam Khomeini’s ideals on Revolution anniversary

February 8, 2025

The event marking the 46th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, underscored Iran’s enduring commitment to its revolutionary principles.

In an address, General Salami hailed the Islamic Republic’s founder’s post-revolutionary legacy, stating, “Imam Khomeini established sovereignty, built power, and in his first act, defeated the greatest empire in human history—the U.S.”

The IRGC Chief emphasized that the path charted by Imam Khomeini continues under the leadership of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, whom he described as the “truthful successor” embodying the late leader’s vision.

“With the same steadfast heart, he stands firm in every battlefield,” Salami added, describing Iran’s leadership as unyielding in the face of external pressures.

How to use “maximum pressure” to stop an Iranian bomb

AT HOME AND abroad, Iran is in trouble. In the space of less than a year, the country has lost one president, three allies (the leaders of Syria, Hamas and Hizbullah), several missile-production sites and all its best air-defence systems. It has a moribund economy, a growing energy crisis and a restive population. Small wonder the regime is relying on one of the few arrows left in its quiver—its nuclear programme.

Strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities should not be ruled out. But Mr Trump should reject entreaties for action now. An attack would be highly risky: it could cause regional mayhem, sucking in America for years. And even a sustained campaign of bombing by America would not be able to destroy Iran’s nuclear know-how. Meanwhile, there is an opportunity for diplomacy. To his credit, Mr Trump seems keen to take it.

One element of this is to make a credible threat of increased sanctions and the reinstatement of the “maximum pressure” policy of his first term. This makes sense. The Biden administration foolishly turned a blind eye to Iranian oil-smuggling, emboldening the regime. Helpfully, under what remains of the jcpoa, over the next eight months the remaining Western signatories, Britain, France and Germany, can choose to trigger a reimposition of UN sanctions on Iran, turning up the heat further.

Union Minister Bandi Sanjay opposes inclusion of backward Muslims in BC list in Telangana caste survey

Feb 09, 2025

Taking exception to the inclusion of backward sections among Muslims in BC category in the caste survey conducted by the Congress government in Telangana, Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Saturday alleged that the move would cause injustice to the backward classes. Addressing a roadshow at Karimnagar organised in support of BJP candidates of the upcoming MLC polls, he said Hindu candidates could not win in Hyderabad civic polls in the past as backward Muslims were recognised as BCs with a four per cent reservation by the late Congress Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in undivided Andhra Pradesh.

The Congress government in the state should remember that even Other Castes are opposing the inclusion of Muslims in the BC category, he said.

While the Intensive Household Survey conducted by the previous BRS government showed the population of BCs to be 51 per cent of total population, the caste survey of Congress government, however, put the number at 46 per cent which is a decline, he claimed.

Delhi election results: 4 Muslim candidates elected to assembly, down from 5

Feb 08, 2025

Delhi’s Muslim voters didn’t abandon AAP. Party fell short of perfect score due to vote-cutter AIMIM

Prashant Srivastava

09 February, 2025

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a crushing defeat in the Delhi assembly polls, but it has maintained domination in the Muslim-dominated constituencies. The Arvind Kejriwal-led party won six of the seven Muslim dominated seats, with Mustafabad slipping from its net.

According to the Election Commission, the AAP candidates comfortably won in Matia Mahal, Babarpur, Chandni Chowk, Seelampur, Okhla, and Ballimaran. All the seven seats have Muslims voters between 25 percent and 50 percent.

Five years ago, AAP had won all seven seats by big margins. In Mustafabad, the BJP threw a surprise this time, but it was courtesy the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) eating into the AAP’ Muslim vote bank. The AIMIM’s Tahir Hussain secured over 33,000 votes, while the AAP lost the seat by a little over 17,500 votes.

The Aam Aadmi Party had repeated its strategy of 2020 by fielding Muslim candidates in five seats–Matia Mahal, Ballimaran, Okhla, Seelampur and Mustafabad. The Congress had six Muslim candidates, whereas the BJP did not field any such candidate.

Army must play its ‘constitutional’ role, says Imran

Kalbe Ali

February 9, 2025

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has penned a second open letter to Chief of Army Staff Gen Asim Munir, alleging mistreatment in prison and criticising the military’s alleged role in politics, urging it “to return to its constitutional limits”.

This follows his first letter on Feb 3, in which he claimed a growing disconnect between the military and the public, urging a re-evaluation of policies to bridge the perceived divide.

After the first letter, security sources said it had not been received by the military and dismissed reports in the media about its existence. They claimed that the establishment was not interested in receiving such a letter.

In his latest letter, posted on his X account on Saturday, Imran Khan said the response to “my (first) letter was dismissive and irresponsible”, adding that his concern “is purely for the reputation of our armed forces and the dangerous consequences of the widening gulf between the military and the public. This is why I wrote this letter”.

Govt warns PTI against creating another May 9

February 9, 2025

SIALKOT: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif warned on Saturday that the government will not allow Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) to disrupt the state again by repeating the events of May 9 or Nov 26.

Speaking at a press conference at his residence in Sialkot Cantt, Mr Asif criticised PTI’s plans to hold protests, accusing the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government of misusing public funds for the party’s rally scheduled for Sunday.

“The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is spending immense resources and wealth on the PTI rally to be held tomorrow. Millions of rupees are being spent on this rally and government employees are being forced to participate in it,” the minister claimed.

He alleged that PTI consistently attempted to tarnish Pakistan’s image on the international stage. “Whenever there is an opportunity to elevate Pakistan’s status, whether through the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit or other global events, PTI launches protests,” he said.

“The Champions Trophy is set to take place in Pakistan, yet PTI is planning protests on Feb 18 or 19, coinciding with the event. Why are there no such rallies and processions in other provinces? PTI’s demonstrations have always been violent, and such actions cannot be allowed,” Mr Asif said.

Ghulam Mursalin Marwat

February 9, 2025

LAKKI MARWAT / PESHAWAR: Two policemen were martyred when terrorists attacked a police post in the Fatehkhel area of Bannu district late on Friday night.

A police official said that assailants used both light and heavy weapons in the midnight attack. “It was an attack from all sides, aimed at seizing control of the police post,” the official said, adding that the officers on duty returned fire effectively.

The official said police officers engaged the attackers until reinforcements arrived. He added that security personnel successfully repelled the militants’ attempt to overrun the police post, forcing them to flee after a fierce gunfight.

Two constables, identified as Rahimullah and Ziaullah, lost their lives in the battle. Their bodies were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital.

This was the second attack on a police post in two days. On Thursday night, militants attempted a similar assault in the same area but were repelled by the police. The attackers reportedly suffered casualties, but managed to evacuate their injured accomplices.

PML-N’s rally trumpets achievements despite ban

Zulqernain Tahir

February 9, 2025

LAHORE: In a clear violation of Section 144, ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led by Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar held a public rally in the city to celebrate “achievements of the government”.

In the wake of the black day protests planned by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) for ‘stealing’ its mandate in the last February general elections, the Punjab government of Maryam Nawaz had imposed Section 144 across the province, banning all political assemblies, gatherings, sit-ins, rallies, demonstrations, protests and other such activities on Feb 8.

The Maryam administration had claimed that there was an apprehension that miscreants/mischief-mongers could take advantage of the public gathering to carry out subversive/anti-state activities to fulfil their nefarious designs.

Bangladesh launches 'Operation Devil Hunt' after ex-minister's supporters resist 'vandalism'

February 09, 2025

Bangladesh's interim government launched an operation Saturday after a student group gave a 24-hour ultimatum to track down “culprits” who assaulted their activists during a reported attack by protesters on an Awami League leader's house on the outskirts of Dhaka.

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement leaders claim their activists went to the ex-minister’s house to prevent looting but were attacked by miscreants.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s government ordered "Operation Devil Hunt" calling out army troops as a protest by the student organisation was underway in Gazipur, where their activists were assaulted on Friday.

In a statement, the Home Ministry said the operation began across Gazipur and would extend nationwide to ensure public safety. It added that details about the coordinated security clampdown comprising army and law enforcement agencies would be announced on Sunday.

According to media reports and witnesses, people in the neighbourhood and Awami League workers assaulted the activists during the attack at the Gazipur home of ex-liberation war affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque, injuring several of them.

40 arrested in Bangladesh after vandalism at Sheikh Hasina's house

Feb 09 2025

Forty people have been arrested in Bangladesh in an operation launched following a violent attack on a student group's activists during vandalism at an Awami League leader's house on the outskirts of Dhaka that left several people injured, according to a media report.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus's government ordered "Operation Devil Hunt" on Saturday after the attack on students and civilians in the Gazipur district on Friday night.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Gazipur Chowdhury Jaber Sadek said that the 40 people were rounded up from parts of the district as part of the operation, United News of Bangladesh reported.

On Friday night, at least 14 individuals, all belonging to the mobs out to vandalise and destroy all signs of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party, were injured as they came under attack in Gazipur city's Dakshinkhan area. The violence occurred during the attack on the residence of former Liberation War Affairs Minister Mozammel Haque.

The injured were immediately taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for treatment. Later, some of them were referred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

The deadly unrest in Bangladesh, which prompted India to recall its staff from Dhaka high commission and temporarily halt visa issuance there, has dealt a blow to medical tourism back home.

In protest, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens Committee held a day-long protest and rally in Gazipur.

Sabah minister orders ‘aggressive’ action on potholes after fatal accident

09 Feb 2025

PUTATAN, Feb 9 — The Public Works Department (PWD) and road concessionaires in Sabah have been instructed to take proactive and aggressive measures to address the persistent pothole problems across the state.

State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya emphasised the need for immediate action, advising the use of coal mix to patch up potholes. He attributed the frequent formation of potholes to heavy rainfall, which exacerbates road damage.

Shahelmey’s remarks came in response to a fatal accident involving a motorcyclist in his 30s, who reportedly hit a pothole and was thrown six metres along the Lido flyover on February 3. The incident has reignited public concern over road safety in Sabah.

For global brands, it is a significant acknowledgement of their commitment to the Middle East as a market and a mark of respect towards their client base. This can also be observed in the evolution of Ramadan collections over the years, moving away from simple themes, to capsules that show a more nuanced understanding of the region. For home-grown brands, paying special attention to the month comes naturally, and we have included a mix of both in this round-up of the most exciting capsule collections coming this Ramadan.

The Italian fashion house has unveiled an edit for the Middle East, in line with the release of its spring/summer 2025 collection. Featuring pieces that combine modesty and elegance, Max Mara’s capsule is inspired by the magic of Venice and the cultural richness of the Silk Road. The pieces are crafted from materials such as pure silk, cotton and light cady, and feature a palette of nude, brown, gold and blue tones, enhanced by metallic embellishment and glistening threads. The line consists of flowy kaftans, long-lined dresses, a two-piece pyjama set, wide-legged trousers and lightweight blouses.

Louis Vuitton’s LV Mirage collection returns this year, offering pieces for daily wear and special occasions, plus a selection of accessories and leather goods. The collection’s core hue, deep blue, is set against contrasting gold highlights, mimicking the midnight sky. Accessories include the Capucines Mini in leather with a flower-quilted effect, the Alma BB in Sapphire blue monogram leather, and, for men, the Keepall in graphite Damier pattern edged with indigo blue. Fine jewellery pieces from the Blossom collection and the Ombre Nomade fragrance complete the capsule.

2 German cities honor faithful life of youngest executed Nazi resistance member

Feb 8, 2025

Finding himself under Nazi rule in 1941, then 16-year-old Helmuth Hübener exemplified courage by choosing to oppose the Nazi regime and spread a series of anti-Nazi leaflets throughout Hamburg, Germany. These leaflets contained political commentary from Hübener, as well as transcriptions of Allied radio broadcasts.

“Do not allow your free will, the most precious thing you possess, to be taken away from you,” Hübener wrote in a 1941 leaflet. The teenager was executed in 1942 for “conspiracy to commit high treason.”

Now, 100 years after his birth, communities, individuals and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Germany and around the world continue to honor Hübener’s legacy of faith and courage as a member of the Church and the youngest executed member of the German resistance to Nazism.

Sunday of The Parable of the Publican and Pharisee

Feb 09, 2025

The Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee is the first Sunday of a three-week period prior to the commencement of Great Lent. It marks the beginning of a time of preparation for the spiritual journey of Lent, a time for Orthodox Christians to draw closer to God through worship, prayer, fasting, and acts of charity. It is also on this day that the Triodion is introduced, a liturgical book that contains the services from this Sunday, the tenth before Pascha (Easter), to Great and Holy Saturday.

Repentance is the door through which we enter Lent, the starting-point of the journey to Pascha (Easter). To repent signifies far more than self-pity or futile regret over things done in the past. To repent is to be renewed, to be transformed in our inward viewpoint, to attain a fresh way of looking at our relationship with God and with others.

The name for this Sunday is taken from the parable of our Lord Jesus Christ found in Luke 18:10-14. This is the story of two men, one a Pharisee, a member of a Jewish sect known for its diligent observance of the Law, and the other a Publican, a government official charged with the responsibility of collecting taxes.

Both men enter the temple, and the Pharisee stands openly and prays, thanking God that he is not like other men, specifically extortioners, the unjust, adulterers, “or even this tax collector” (v. 11). He then begins to list his religious accomplishments by stating, “I fast twice a week, and I give tithes of all that I possess” (v. 12).

In direct contrast to the pride of the Pharisee, the Publican goes to a place where he will not be noticed by others and beats his breast saying, “God, be merciful to me a sinner!” (v. 13).

Having told this story, Jesus affirms that it was the Publican who returned home justified and forgiven rather than the Pharisee. He states, “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (v. 14).

Metropolitan Epifaniy called for prayer and action at Ukrainian Prayer Breakfast in Washington

Feb 08, 2025

Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine participated in the Ukrainian Prayer Breakfast in Washington on February 7, 2025, an important event within the framework of the annual Ukrainian Week in the United States.

Opening the gathering, the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine led the Lord’s Prayer, “Our Father,” and later addressed the attendees.

In his speech, he emphasized the need for continuous prayer and support for Ukraine, stating that the country, wounded and suffering, continues to lose the lives of its sons and daughters daily in the fight for freedom, existence, and the future. He stressed that prayer for the victory of truth and a just peace for Ukraine is a spiritual weapon that believers must call upon, urging all people of goodwill to stand with Ukraine.

He highlighted that, for those who believe in the word of God, peace does not mean complacency or inaction but rather struggle. He declared that Ukraine has no choice but to fight against the evil of the “Russian world,” describing it as a modern embodiment of an empire of darkness that must be defeated.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urges allies to 'invest' in mineral wealth

Feb 9, 2025

KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday Kyiv wants its allies to invest in its mineral resources after US President Donald Trump asked for "rare earths" in exchange for military aid.

"We have mineral resources. This does not mean that we give them away to anyone, even to strategic partners," Zelenskyy posted on social media, quoting answers he had given in an interview with Reuters news agency.

Trump said this week the United States was "looking to do a deal with Ukraine, where they're going to secure what we're giving them with their rare earths and other things".

Quoting his Reuters interview, Zelenskyy said Ukraine's mineral wealth was worth "trillions of dollars", citing its reserves of titanium and uranium, which he described as the largest in Europe.

He said it is very important for Ukraine to "keep all this" because these resources represent "security guarantees", adding that he also did not want them to fall into Russia's hands.

Zelenskyy wrote on X on Friday that Ukraine and the US were "planning meetings and talks" and "working out the details", without confirming there would be talks next week.

Trump has urged both Moscow and Kyiv to negotiate an end to the war, which is nearing a third year with Russia making steady advances in east Ukraine.

North Korea's Kim slams US-South Korea-Japan partnership and vows to boost his nuclear program

Feb 9, 2025

SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said an elevated US security partnership with South Korea and Japan poses a grave threat to his country and vowed to further bolster his nuclear weapons program, state media reported Sunday.

Kim has previously made similar warnings, but his latest statement implies again that the North Korean leader won’t likely embrace President Donald Trump’s overture to meet him and revive diplomacy anytime soon.

In a speech marking the 77th founding anniversary of the Korean People’s Army on Saturday, Kim said the US-Japan-South Korea trilateral security partnership established under a US plot to form a NATO-like regional military bloc is inviting military imbalance on the Korean Peninsula and “raising a grave challenge to the security environment of our state,” according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

“Referring to a series of new plans for rapidly bolstering all deterrence including nuclear forces, he clarified once again the unshakable policy of more highly developing the nuclear forces,” KCNA said.

US Bishops Conference Lays Off 50 Amid Migrant Funding ‘Uncertainty’

By  Zelda Caldwell

February 9, 2025

The U.S. Catholic bishops’ conference laid off 50 staff members in its migration and refugee services office Friday, citing a delay in reimbursements from the federal government.

U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ spokesperson Chieko Noguchi, in a statement shared with CNA, said the job cuts were due to “continuing uncertainty regarding refugee resettlement and the overall future of those programs.”

“Please pray for these dedicated men and women who have given so much of themselves in service to their sisters and brothers in need,” Noguchi said.

The layoffs, first reported by The Pillar website Friday night, mark an escalation of a deepening political and financial crisis for the USCCB and its affiliated charitable agencies, whose decades-long role providing essential services for migrants and refugees largely paid with federal funds has come under scrutiny from President Donald Trump’s administration.

The USCCB directs the bulk of the more than $100 million in federal grants it receives annually to affiliate organizations that provide migration and refugee services such as Catholic Charities.

Handicapping papal elections a fool’s errand

By Chris Altieri

Feb 9, 2025

A friend asked me the other day about the chances the next pope will be Italian. It’s an interesting question, one that can – should – be parsed out carefully and in several different ways. Before getting to that, however, there’s a good bit of throat clearing to do.

Handicapping conclaves is the inveterate pastime of Vatican watchers both professional and amateur, for reasons too many to list and too obvious to explain.

Every time the pope catches a sniffle there’s a fresh round of “How sick is the pope?” and “Will this be it?” coupled with the practically obligatory “Who’s next?”

Pope Francis is an 88-year-old suffering from chronic health problems and prone to respiratory infections, who announced he is dealing with a bout of bronchitis and decided to take his weekend meetings at the Santa Marta guesthouse where he lives in the Vatican.

It’s perhaps surprising there hasn’t been more speculation this time, but this is hardly the first time Francis has caught sick. Indeed, he has fairly bounced back from far worse. He has shown himself to be remarkably resilient and frequently appears to possess such stores of energy as much younger men would like to have.

Intersections of Islamic art and science: Groundbreak

09-02-2025

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS.- The McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College explores sources of wonder in the upcoming exhibition, Wonders of Creation: Art, Science, and Innovation in the Islamic World. Organized in collaboration with the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA), the exhibition examines intersections of science and craft in Islamic material culture and contemporary art through the framework of a thirteenth-century text by Zakariyya ibn Muhammad al-Qazwini (1202–83) describing the wonders of the universe.

Wonders of Creation will be on view from February 9 through June 1, 2025 in the McMullen Museum’s Daley Family and Monan Galleries, the second and final venue for the exhibition, which debuted this fall at the SDMA.

“The McMullen is pleased to present, in collaboration with the San Diego Museum of Art, this landmark interdisciplinary exhibition that explores the complex, entwined relationship between art and science in the medieval Islamic world and how that relationship has continued to enhance global innovation and culture to the present day,” said Inaugural Robert L. and Judith T. Winston Director of the McMullen Museum Nancy Netzer, a professor of art history, Boston College.

“We hope that Wonders of Creation will spark conversations and new research leading to future innovations among a receptive audience in New England, where the arts and sciences have flourished for centuries, especially in our colleges and universities.”

Tensions high as US cuts off SA aid

By Ngala Killian Chimtom

Feb 8, 2025

US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order on Friday cutting off all US aid to South Africa, citing his disapproval of a land reform bill and the genocide case South Africa has brought against Israel at the International Court of Justice in the Hague, and making good on a threat he issued earlier in the week.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was defiant in the face of Trump’s threat delivering a spirited “state of the nation” speech on Thursday, in which he said South Africa “will not be bullied” and called for national unity in the face of growing international tensions.

“We are witnessing the rise of nationalism, protectionism, the pursuit of narrow interests and the decline of common cause,” Ramaphosa said. “We will stand together as a united nation,” the South African president said, “and we will speak with one voice in defense of our national interests.”

The core of Trump’s complaint against South Africa is a law – recently passed – allowing the expropriation of land without compensation in rare cases.

South African officials have insisted the taking power is limited and tightly circumscribed, similar to eminent domain laws existing in many jurisdictions and part of measures designed to address lingering – and persistent – Apartheid-era disparities in land ownership.

In 2024, US seized 19kg of fentanyl from Canada border; 9,600kg from Mexico

Feb 9, 2025

TORONTO: Canada's last-minute reprieve from crushing US tariffs came after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled a series of measures aimed at controlling the trafficking of fentanyl, a key reason President Donald Trump has cited for wanting to impose levies.

Fentanyl has flooded North America's drug supply over the last decade, killing tens of thousands in Canada and the United States, and generating enormous profits for criminal organisations using basic chemistry skills, improvised equipment and home laboratories to produce millions of doses. (Fentanyl is synthetic, means it can be made easily and cheaply in a lab, and is about 50 to 100 times stronger than many prescription opioids.)

Trump has repeatedly talked about fentanyl as a major public health threat to Americans and holds Mexico and Canada responsible for allowing the drug to enter the US. But last year, less than 1% of the fentanyl arriving in the US came from Canada.

Bello El-Rufa’i backs probe into father’s administration, gives conditions

By Nana Ismai

February 8, 2025

Bello El-Rufai, the House of Representatives member for Kaduna North and son of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed support for an investigation into his father’s administration—provided it is conducted fairly and without bias.

Speaking on BBC Hausa’s Mahangar Zamani, he emphasized that while accountability is essential, any probe should be aimed at uncovering the truth rather than serving political vendettas.

The lawmaker also cautioned against using investigations as a tool for political retaliation. “If driven by selfish motives, such inquiries only hinder progress,” he warned.

He stated that his focus remains on governance in Kaduna North. His comments come amid growing discussions on political accountability in Kaduna State, with increasing calls for transparency in addressing past administrative decisions.

’Don’t beg Nigerian govt for my release, I didn’t commit any crime’, Kanu tells Igbo politicians

By Ripples Nigeria

February 9, 2025

Detained leader of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has called on Igbo political leaders to desist from begging the Nigerian government to release him as he did not commit any crime that warranted his arrest and detention in the first place.

Kanu’s call came on the heels of appeals by prominent Igbo politicians and leaders like Anambra State governor, Charles Soludo, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ben Kalu, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, among others, who have made appeals to President Bola Tinubu to release the IPOB leader.

But in a statement released on Saturday by his Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu said he did not send anybody to beg the government for his release.

The statement noted that the Federal High Court had already declared Kanu’s detention was unconstitutional and that international tribunal decisions had also deemed his detention as unlawful, therefore his release should be a straightforward matter of complying with the law instead of the politicians begging for it.

We are closing in on Turji ,Sani Black now seeking escape routes- CDS

February 9, 2025

Gen. Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), was at the closing of the 2025 CDS Joint Task Force Commanders Conference with the theme, “Enhancing Jointness Across all Theatres of Operation” on Friday in Abuja. At the occasion, he said that the walls are closing in on those terrorising Nigerians.

He said that a notorious bandit leader, KachanaNafaresh, along with several of his fighters were killed during a “crushing” raid in Zamfara forest on Thursday night.

According to him, security operations backed by the air component stormed the camp and burned down Sani Black’s house, forcing him to flee.

“In a follow-up operation, troops advanced into Tufan and Mashima villages, further dislodging armed groups and pushing them deeper into the forest.

“The remaining portions of his camp, previously targeted in past offensives, were obliterated in a final suit to erase his presence from the region.

Kwankwaso, Aregbesola’s Political Alliance Stir Speculations Ahead Of 2027 Elections

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

9 February 2025

The National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Saturday, held a closed-door meeting with former Minister of Interior and ex-Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, at the latter’s residence in Lagos.

Details of the discussions remain unclear, but sources within the Osun State chapter of the NNPP hinted that the meeting revolved around national politics and potential political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

Naija News understands that Aregbesola, who recently led his political faction, the Omoluabi Progressives, out of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun, has been the subject of intense speculation regarding his next political move.

His exit from the APC, citing victimisation and marginalisation by the party’s leadership, has fueled rumours about his potential defection to another political platform.

Osun NNPP Chairman Tosin Odeyemi confirmed the meeting and shared photos of Kwankwaso and Aregbesola, suggesting that discussions could signal a new political alliance.
