Indian Muslim scholars’ support for Turkey's Erdogan is alarming

In the wake of the military coup attempt in Turkey, some prominent Indian Muslim scholars have publicly expressed overwhelming support for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In a letter dated July 17, 2016, (two days after the coup attempt in Turkey) renowned Islamic cleric Maulana Salman Hussaini Nadvi emphatically endorsed Erdogan and lambasted the alleged mastermind of the putsch, Fethullah Gulen (a Turkish Islamic scholar based in the US).
He even used some derogatory words for Gulen in the letter and accused him of cooperating with the "American and Israeli lobby". He expressed regret at the success of the coup led by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi against the government of Mohamed Morsi in Egypt.
The Shahi Imam of Delhi's iconic Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, also spoke very highly of the Turkish leader in the Friday sermon on July 22 after having a meeting with the Turkish ambassador to India. He too derided Gulen in equally strong words.
While it is absolutely fine for anyone to back a democratically-elected president of a country in the face of an attempt to oust him/her through undemocratic means, these scholars can hardly be said to be supporting Erdogan on this ground.
There are at least three underlying factors that determine their stand on this issue - support for political Islam, longing for the lost Ottoman Caliphate and a great appetite for conspiracy theories among Muslims in India.
Almost all the leaders in West Asia with a strongman Islamist image who engage in polemics with the West - quintessentially political Islamists - enjoy popular and near unconditional support of the Indian Muslim community.
There is little doubt that both Erdogan and Morsi are prominent figures representing political Islam, and it is one of the reasons why Maulana Nadvi's letter condemning the coup attempt against Erdogan in Turkey also makes reference to the coup against Morsi in Egypt.
Furthermore, the popularity of the erstwhile Ottoman Caliphate among Muslims in India remains high. It is seen as the last powerful authority which represented the global Muslim community, the loss of which has left Muslims in despair all across the world.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been relentlessly trying to revive the Ottoman past in Turkey.
Given that Erdogan has been relentlessly trying to revive the Ottoman past in Turkey and has considerably succeeded in doing it, adds to the reasons for Muslims in India to appreciate and admire him.
Fully aware of this fact, the Turkish envoy in India is apparently trying to capitalise on this.
Following the coup attempt, he hashed a series of meetings with prominent Muslim figures in India. Apart from the Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, he also met with a delegation from Jamaat-e-Islami Hind; JamiatUlama-i-Hind general secretary Mahmood Madani; Chishty Foundation director Syed Salman Chishty; India Islamic Cultural Centre (IICC) president Sirajuddin Qureshi, and others.
The emergence of neo-Ottomanism in Turkey and the palpable effort by Turkish diplomatic missions abroad to garner support for it should be a matter of grave concern for everyone.
Not only is it perilous for Muslims in general to support a trend that has no place in today's secular and democratic world order, it is also a threat to India's own unity and integrity.
On the contrary, the person accused by Erdogan of plotting the coup - Fethullah Gulen - thinks unfavourably of any idea to re-establish a caliphate.
In an article, he says: "…the revival of the Caliphate would be very difficult and making Muslims accept such a revived Khilafah would be impossible. The perception of the modern world regarding the revival of Khilafah must be considered."
Finally, Maulana Nadvi's letter is also a manifestation of the great appetite for conspiracy theories among Muslims in India.
Arguments like Osama bin-Laden wasn't killed in Pakistan, 9/11 was an inside job, the international financial system is under Jewish control etc, are some of the most popular and preposterous conspiracy theories in India.
Within a few days of the coup, when the world was still trying to grapple with what happened in Turkey, Maulana Nadvi and the Shahi Imam were too sure that the attempt had been made by Gulen with the backing of the "American and Israeli lobby".
He said this despite Gulen categorically denying any involvement and any independent investigation into the coup still due.
In fact, no independent inquiry has yet been carried out on the matter and the Turkish government's narrative on the coup has been challenged on many fronts.
Understandably, what convinced them so quickly of Gulen's involvement in the coup is the fact that he lives in the US.
If so, this is no different from the infamous Subramanian Swamy's allegation that since Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan has worked for many years in the US and holds a permanent residence permit of the country, he is "mentally not fully Indian".
To summarise, the support that has been expressed by some prominent Muslim figures of India for the Turkish president can hardly be said to be support for modern democracy and democratic values.
Seemingly, their prime concern is the defence of a political Islamist who talks of the revival of a lost caliphate, regardless of his democratic credentials.
This is a deeply alarming situation and must concern everyone who holds democracy dear in India.

Iraqi Army Kills 700 ISIL Militants during Liberation of Area near Ramadi

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iraqi forces killed 700 ISIL militants during an anti-terrorist offensive on Khalidiyah Island located 14 miles East of Ramadi in the Western Anbar province, the commander of Anbar Operations said.
"Security forces so far have killed 700 ISIL members since the beginning of Khalidiyah Island liberation battles. Khalidiyah Island has been liberated two weeks ago," said General Ismail Mahalawi, Iraqi News reported.
The final anti-terrorist offensive on Khalidiyah Island started in late July. In early August, Iraqi media reported that Khalidiyah Island had been fully liberated from terrorists.
The city of Ramadi was occupied by ISIL militants in May 2014. The government forces succeeded in retaking the city after weeks of fierce fighting from December 2015 to February 2016.
ISIL is a terrorist group mainly operating in Syria and Iraq. The terrorists have also claimed responsibility for attacks in Europe. The group is deemed as terrorist entity by international bodies, including UN.

Gen. Shaheem was speaking during a ceremony to mark the 97th Independence Day of Afghanistan in Kabul city today.
Admitting that the country is facing a major threat from terrorism, Gen. Shaheem said the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) are resolute in their fight against the terrorism.
Gen. Shaheem further added that the Afghan forces continue to suppress the terrorist groups and will turn the country into the graveyard of terrorism.
In other parts of his speech, Gen. Shaheem said the outsiders are still interfering the internal affairs of Afghanistan but he did not elaborate further.
The remarks by Gen. Shaheem comes as the security situation of the country has sharply been deteriorating during the recent months with the rampant Taliban-led insurgency.
Afghanistan is also facing threats posed by the international terrorism, including the loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group as they attempt to gain and expand foothold in the country.
The Afghan forces launched a major operation against ISIS terrorists in eastern Nangarhar province around three weeks as they are still busy conducting their annual military offensive ‘Shafaq Operations’ to suppress the Taliban-led insurgency.

In Assam, Indian Muslims are being abused as 'Bangladeshi'

On August 13, in a discussion in the Assam Assembly about eviction of illegal encroachers from government/khas/VGR/PGR lands, a Muslim Congress MLA was called a "Bangladeshi" by a BJP MLA.
Sherman Ali, the Congress MLA, was only trying to make his point that there are 1,30,000 families affected by erosion who could be occupying these lands and they should be properly rehabilitated instead of being indiscriminately evicted.
Ali was advocating for the most marginalised people of Assam who lost their homes to monstrous erosion of the Brahmaputra. Since Independence, more than 7 per cent of Assam's land mass has been eroded.

A group of 30 individuals including Dalit activists urged the Supreme Court to overturn a ban on cattle slaughter on Wednesday, saying it is a violation of “one’s right to choose his food” and “supply of essential proteins”.
India is the world's fifth-largest consumer and second-largest exporter of beef, but groups close to the BJP oppose the killing of cows as the animal is considered sacred by many Hindus.

Muslim Man Takes Holy Dip at One of the Pushkar Ghats

Nalgonda: Setting aside the barriers of caste and religion, a Muslim man from Miryalaguda town took a holy dip at one of the Pushkar Ghats in the district on Wednesday.
Khaja Moinuddin, a native of Muktgagirikunta in Miryalaguda town, has set an example to others by taking the holy bath at Adavidevulapally pushkar ghat during the ongoing river fest.
Speaking to The Hans India, Moinuddin, who came to the ghat along with his Hindu friend, informed that this was the first time he took holy bath during Pushkaralu.

Army's Operations in Jisr al-Shughour to Empty Eastern Aleppo from Terrorists

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian army and its allies' advance towards Jisr al-Shughour will force the terrorist groups in Eastern Aleppo to return to Idlib province, a military expert said on Thursday.

Tens of Militants Surrender to Syrian Gov't in Homs

TEHRAN (FNA)- Around 140 rebels in the Central province of Homs laid down their arms and turned themselves in to the Syrian officials.
"140 militants from the villages of Talbiseh, al-Rastan and Hassia in Homs province and from a number of neighborhoods in Homs city were pardoned after turning themselves in to the authorities on Wednesday," a source said on Thursday.

Taliban shadow governor for Kunduz likely killed in US drone strike

The shadow governor of the Taliban group for northern Kunduz province has likely been killed in a drone strike conducted by US forces.
According to local officials in Kunduz province, at least 22 Taliban insurgents were killed and around 30 others were wounded during fierce clashes in this province.
Provincial police chief Gen. Mohammad Qasim Jangalbagh said the Afghan security forces also suffered casualtie during the clashes and at least two of them lost their lives and six others were wounded.

As France gets closer to its 2017 presidential election, Muslims in the country are concerned about upcoming reforms which some fear could include interventions in Islamic lifestyles.
A new state-controlled ‘Foundation for Islamic Works’ is on the agenda as part of the reforms. It would oversee some aspects of mosques’ operations – including financing and training of foreign-born imams – as well as working on the promotion of the cultural representation of Islam.

German police find items ‘glorifying Islamic State’ at home of man arrested for explosives

A man arrested in Germany on suspicion of storing materials that could be used as explosives had items in his apartment glorifying Islamic State, the regional police chief told broadcaster rbb.
Hans-Juergen Moerke told rbb that no attack plans had been found but a search of the flat had uncovered pyrotechnics, a gas mask, a replica Kalashnikov, camouflage suits and “many other IS trappings i.e. things that glorify IS”.

A convoy of vehicles carrying Nigerian immigration officials and a group of traders were travelling from Gamboru, on the border with Cameroon, to the city of Maiduguri when they came under fire on Monday.

Turkey submits Israel deal to parliament for approval

Turkish mega projects unaffected by coup attempt, says minister

There has been no disruption to Turkey’s major infrastructure projects following the July 15 coup attempt, Transport Minister Ahmet Arslan said Aug. 17.
