Calling An Indian Muslim A ‘Pakistani’ May Be In Poor Taste But Does Not Amount To Hurting Religious Sentiments: Supreme Court

VineetBhalla

16-03-2025

Asif Hassan/AFP

-----------

In February, the Supreme Court ruled that calling someone “Pakistani” in private may be in poor taste but does not amount to the offence of hurting religious sentiments.

However, on March 7, a Delhi court held that Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kapil Mishra’s statements referring to people protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act as “Pakistanis” “appear[ed] to be a brazen attempt to promote enmity on the grounds of religion”.

Promoting enmity on grounds of religion is an offence under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which in 2024 replaced Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code.

That very same day, BJP MLA Gopal Sharma repeatedly referred to Congress chief whip Rafeek Khan as a “Pakistani” in the Rajasthan Assembly, leading to an uproar in the House.

Legal experts Scroll spoke to explained that context is key to determine whether using “Pakistani” as a slur is against the law. When the word is used in public to invoke violence, then it is covered under the laws on hate speech. However, it would be unreasonable to expect criminal law to govern the use of the slur in private speech.

One of the earliest cases of such a matter being brought before court is from 1994, when a public interest litigation was filed in the Bombay High Court against Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray for his writings in the party newspaper Saamana during the Bombay riots in 1992-’93. Thackeray had called Muslims “traitors” who created “mini-Pakistans”, threatening that they would meet the same fate as “the domes of the Babri Masjid”.

The petition demanded that Thackeray be booked under the hate speech provisions of the Indian Penal Code: Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 153B (assertions prejudicial to national integration).

The High Court dismissed the petition on two grounds: “Stray sentences could not be interpreted in isolation” and “it did not make sense to rake up the issue afresh” considering that “both the communities had begun to live in harmony”.

In contrast, in its order on March 7, the Delhi court order against Mishra articulated the problem with the “Pakistani” slur: it held that “unfortunately in common parlance [reference to Pakistan] is often used to denote the members of a particular religion”.

In fact, the imputation of the slur goes beyond just religious connotations. “It is a way of saying that Muslims don’t belong in India,” said Prateek Chadha, a Delhi-based Advocate on Record at the Supreme Court. “The implication, therefore, is not only that you’re a traitor who does not have the interest of India in heart, but that you can never be Indian.”

This may be sufficient to qualify as an offence under Indian criminal law, according to Sumit Baudh, professor and executive director of the Centre on Public Law and Jurisprudence at the OP Jindal Global University.

“Given the geopolitical background of hostilities between Indian and Pakistani national identities and deeply entrenched sentiments of ill will and suspicion against each other, calling Indian Muslims ‘Pakistani’ could be considered an imputation that they do not ‘bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established or uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India’,” he said.

Making such an imputation is an offence under Section 197 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita – which replaced Section 153B of the Indian Penal Code. Section 197 covers “imputations and assertions prejudicial to national integration”.

The popular spread of the notion that being in favour Pakistan means being against India is indicated by the increase in the number of Indians being booked in the last few years for allegedly shouting pro-Pakistan slogans.

However, while being booked might mean legal harassment and even stretches in prison, it would be unlikely that the police will be able to secure convictions for these charges. A 2024 Supreme Court judgment held that extending good wishes to Pakistan, or to any other country, for that matter, is not a criminal offence.

Legal experts said that the context would determine whether the use of “Pakistani” as a slur against an Indian Muslim would qualify as a criminal offence.

Naveed Mehmood Ahmad, senior resident fellow and the Crime and Punishment Team lead at the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, a legal think tank, said that “in the context of leading or inciting communal violence, the use of ‘Pakistani’ as a slur may be covered under hate speech provisions”.

Without these qualifiers, however, it is more difficult to qualify the slur as a criminal offence. In private speech, for example, there are no grounds for criminality since regulation of speech under Article 19(2) of the Constitution only extends to public speech, explained Chadha. “The state has no business regulating what you say in private,” he said.

Delhi-based criminal lawyer and legal writer Abhinav Sekhri agreed that it was the context in which the slur is used which would determine whether it is being used in a hateful manner or not. “The bare text of the law won’t provide for that context,” he said. “Is it being used in a derogatory way? Is the impact such that the criminal law should be getting involved in it? Such analysis will have to be done by courts to determine whether something is an offence.”

However, the possibility of misusing the criminal justice system means that one should be wary of relying on criminal law to address the misuse of the slur, argued Arvind Verma, professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Indiana University, Bloomington in the United States and former Indian Police Services officer.

“Abusive language should only be addressed as a civil offence,” he said. “Such defamation is better handled by a civil suit; else it gives unnecessary powers to police that are likely to be misused.”

Ahmad agreed. “Our hate speech laws are so vague and widely misused for innocuous statements that I would refrain from going in the direction that if someone calls someone ‘Pakistani’ then they should be jailed for two years,” he said.

Delhi-based lawyer Shah Rukh Alam said that the use of the “Pakistani” slur, such as by Kapil Mishra against Muslim protestors, was more than a problem of offensive speech.

“Hate speech causes structural discrimination,” she said. “And that is exactly what calling somebody a ‘Pakistani’ does: it raises doubts about Muslims' loyalty – a mistrust that rests deep in the North Indian psyche – and suggests that Muslim political mobilisation is in itself a conspiracy.”

Mishra's reference to anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protest sites as "mini-Pakistans" qualified as hate speech since it implies that Muslim loyalties were not with India and their political mobilisation was dangerous, she said. This sentiment was used to allegedly incite violence against the protestors.

However, simply criminalising this speech might not be the best solution. “Because such prejudice about national loyalty and belonging builds up slowly, over time, you can't throw somebody in jail for simply calling somebody else a ‘Pakistani’,” she said. But, she said, “there has to be a very strong cultural, political and social reaction to this”.

“This is not a law and order problem alone but that of an individual or group being targeted or discriminated against,” Alam said. “It must not be treated as a criminal law problem, but as a constitutional problem.”

Baudh similarly argued that the problem was urgent and pressing and current laws were not enough: India requires an anti-discrimination legislation to deal with this problem, he said.

He underlined that the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita which replaced the Indian Penal Code in July 2024 is a generic criminal legislation that does not recognise inequality as a factor of hate speech. He suggested that India needs a strong anti-discrimination law that holds people accountable for both criminal and civil violations.

Such a law, Baudh said, should not just focus on intentional hate but also on the impact of discrimination, especially on religious minorities.

He also highlighted a gap in legal protection. While Article 15(1) of the Constitution bans discrimination based on race and religion and Article 15(2) extends this protection to discrimination from private individuals and businesses, “religious and racial minorities are not protected from discrimination per se” due to “a glaring omission in the anti-discrimination law in India”. He argued that India needs a single, comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation rather than separate laws for caste, religion and gender discrimination.

Scottish man hosts Discord where children discuss killing Muslims

By Hamish Morrison

Dundee man Lennon Lawson hosts a Discord server where children discuss killing Muslims (Image: TikTok)

--------------

A SCOT runs an online forum where teenagers discuss killing Muslims and the instigation of a “civil war”, the Sunday National can reveal.

Lennon Lawson posts videos on TikTok calling for Britons to “rise up” against the Government and hosts a Discord server – where children as young as 14 talk about deporting Muslims or murdering them if they refuse.

One user asked whether others in the chat – which has 26 members – “like Muslims”, to which a 14-year-old moderator replied: “Look if they pay there [sic] taxes like a British citizen they can stay but if they are living of [sic] our government then get the fuck out”.

After the moderator’s suggestion of forcibly enlisting Muslims in the British Army is dismissed because “they’ll probably turn”, he replied: “Then shot [sic] them.”

In the same discussion following another user saying that “we need a war to get them out”, he added: “Look I agree, but think about this if we just kill them, then we will look like the bad guys and people will hate us so deport them is our best option but we can kill a few like if there [sic] do not go”.

In one chilling exchange, a user with the handle xtess09 said that Muslims “should get out or die”, the moderator replied: “Yea exactly”.

During a discussion of members’ ages, Lawson said he was 21 and replied to two people saying they were aged 14 and 15, he replied: “Just because you’re younger doesn’t mean you can’t stand up for your country.”

Elsewhere, recruits appeared keen to impress the leader of the so-called “People’s Army”, with the 14-year-old moderator asking Lawson at around 7.45am last Monday: “Sir is there anything you would like me to work on”.

In one video, he said: “The British kingdom is falling and we are allowing it to happen. It doesn’t matter whether you’re Scottish, English, Welsh, Irish, I think we can all agree that we’re being walked over.

However, in another, he bemoans: “We are more than being on the side of the street in our own country. You’ll see more Englishmen on your streets than anything else. Does that not show you? So wake up and rise.”

Prevent, the Government’s controversial anti-extremism scheme, identifies extreme right-wing ideologies as a national security threat – but notes: “Conspiracy theories can act as gateways to radicalised thinking and sometimes violence.

In a post criticising Farage’s stance against mass deportations, Lawson hit about at the MP because he “won’t deport the existing families [that] know of these heinous crimes”, in a reference to Asian rape gangs.

It has not come out of nowhere; it is the consequence of years of toxic political discourse that has been fuelled by parts of our media and the likes of Donald Trump and Nigel Farage.

“We should all be deeply concerned about the growth of the far-right, which is being fuelled by a growing and hateful global movement against human rights.”

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Launches ''Al-Khandaq” Operations' for Shariah Rule in Pakistan

Mar 16, 2025

NEW DELHI: The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has announced the launch of 'Al-Khandaq Operations,' a campaign aimed at establishing a comprehensive Shariah system in Pakistan.

In a statement, TTP spokesperson Mohammad Khurasani revealed that the operations will include ambush attacks, targeted strikes, guerrilla raids and martyrdom operations against the military, security agencies and their collaborators.

The TTP leadership said it has organized military units at the central and provincial levels, equipped with advanced weapons, to carry out the operations. With Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) on the offensive and Islamic State joining forces, this could pose a serious problem for Pakistan, experts say.

US and Israel look to the Horn of Africa for resettling Palestinians uprooted from Gaza

15 March 2025

The U.S. and Israel have approached officials of three East African governments to discuss using their territories as potential destinations for resettling Palestinians uprooted from the Gaza Strip under President Donald Trump’s proposed postwar plan, American and Israeli officials told The Associated Press. The contacts with Sudan, Somalia and the breakaway region of Somalia known as Somaliland reflect the determination by the U.S. and Israel to press ahead with a plan that has been widely condemned and raised serious legal and moral issues, according to the exclusive report.

Because all three places are poor, and in some cases wrecked by violence, the proposal also casts doubt on Trump’s stated goal of resettling Gaza’s Palestinians in a “beautiful area.” Officials from Sudan said they have rejected overtures from the U.S., while officials from Somalia and Somaliland told The Associated Press that they were not aware of any contacts.

Under Trump’s plan, Gaza’s more than 2 million people would be permanently sent elsewhere. He has proposed the U.S. would take ownership of the territory oversee a lengthy cleanup process and develop it as a real estate project. The idea of a mass transfer of Palestinians was once considered a fantasy of Israel’s ultranationalist fringe. But since Trump presented the idea at a White House meeting last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hailed it as a “bold vision”.

Palestinians in Gaza have rejected the proposal and dismiss Israeli claims that the departures would be voluntary. Arab nations have expressed vehement opposition and offered an alternative reconstruction plan that would leave the Palestinians in place. Rights groups have said forcing or pressuring the Palestinians to leave could be a potential war crime. Still, the White House says Trump “stands by his vision.”

Speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a secret diplomatic initiative, U.S. and Israeli officials confirmed the contacts with Somalia and Somaliland, while the Americans confirmed Sudan as well. They said it was unclear how much progress the efforts made or at what level the discussions took place.

Separate outreach from the U.S. and Israel to the three potential destinations began last month, days after Trump floated the Gaza plan alongside Netanyahu, according to the U.S. officials, who said that Israel was taking the lead in the discussions. Israel and the U.S. have a variety of incentives — financial, diplomatic and security — to offer these potential partners. It is a formula that Trump used five years ago when he brokered the Abraham Accords — a series of mutually beneficial diplomatic accords between Israel and four Arab countries. The White House declined to comment on the outreach efforts.

The offices of Netanyahu and Ron Dermer, the Israeli Cabinet minister and Netanyahu confidant who has been leading Israel’s postwar planning, also had no comment. But Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a longtime advocate of what he calls “voluntary” emigration of Palestinians, said this week that Israel is working to identify countries to take in Palestinians. He also said Israel is preparing a “very large emigration department” within its Defense Ministry.

Sudan: The North African country was among the four Abraham Accord nations that agreed to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020. As part of the deal, the U.S. removed Sudan from its list of state supporters of terrorism, a move that gave the country access to international loans and global legitimacy. But relations with Israel never took off as Sudan plunged into civil war between government forces and the RSF paramilitary group.

The conflict has been marked by atrocities, including ethnically motivated killing and rape, according to the U.N. and rights groups. The International Criminal Court is investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity, and then-President Joe Biden’s administration in January said the RSF and its proxies were committing genocide.

The U.S. and Israel would be hard-pressed to persuade Palestinians to leave Gaza, particularly to such a troubled country. But they could offer incentives to the Khartoum government, including debt relief, weapons, technology and diplomatic support. Two Sudanese officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive diplomatic matter, confirmed that the Trump administration has approached the military-led government about accepting Palestinians.

One of them said the contacts began even before Trump’s inauguration with offers of military assistance against the RSF, assistance with postwar reconstruction and other incentives. Both officials said the Sudanese government rejected the idea. “This suggestion was immediately rebuffed,” said one official. ”No one opened this matter again.” Military chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan told an Arab leaders’ summit last week in Cairo that his country “categorically rejects” any plan that aims to transfer “the brotherly Palestinians from their land under whatever justification or name.”

Somaliland: Somaliland, a territory of over 3 million people in the Horn of Africa, seceded from Somalia over 30 years ago, but it is not internationally recognized as an independent state. Somalia considers Somaliland part of its territory.

Somaliland’s new president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, has made international recognition a priority. An American official involved in the efforts confirmed that the U.S. was “having a quiet conversation with Somaliland about a range of areas where they can be helpful to the U.S. in exchange for recognition.” The possibility of U.S. recognition could provide an incentive for Abdullahi to back away from the territory’s solidarity with the Palestinians.

The United Arab Emirates, another Abraham Accord country that has developed strong ties with Israel, once had a military base in Somaliland and maintains commercial interests there, including a port. The territory’s strategic location, in the Gulf of Aden waterway near Yemen, home to the Houthi rebel group, could also make it a valuable ally.

Over the years, Somaliland has been lauded for its relatively stable political environment, contrasting sharply with Somalia’s ongoing struggles amid deadly attacks by al-Qaida-linked militant group al-Shabab. Since 1991, Somaliland has maintained its own government, currency and security structures. Still, it has one of the lowest income levels in the world. An official in Somaliland, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said his government has not been approached and is not in talks about taking in Palestinians.

Somalia: Somalia has been a vocal supporter of the Palestinians, often hosting peaceful protests on its streets in support of them. The country joined the recent Arab summit that rejected Trump’s plan and seems like an unlikely destination for Palestinians, even if they did agree to move.

SambuChepkorir, a lawyer and conflict researcher in Nairobi, Kenya, said it is difficult to understand why Somalia would want to host Palestinians given the country’s strong support for Palestinian self-rule. “The realignments keep changing, and so maybe there is a hidden agenda,” Chepkorir said.

Democracies Must Coordinate To Dismantle Yunus-Islamist Linkages In Banglades

By: Jagdish N Singh

------------

The progressive-minded citizens of Bangladesh need to be vigilant about the Islamist linkages of the Yunus regime. It is in Bangladesh's overall interest to be close to secular India. India has always been behind the people of Bangladesh

History bears out that the course of diplomacy is too strange to visualise. Relations between no two states have ever been permanent; friends today can be foes tomorrow, and vice versa. This historical truism finds yet another manifestation in the newly emerging relationship between Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Observers say that since the overthrow of the democratically elected Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh last year, the interim regime led by Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh has been moving rapidly to improve the country’s ties with Pakistan, for long its sworn enemy.

During the meeting between Yunus and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the D-8 Summit in Cairo in December 2024, Yunus called for a resolution of the contentious issues between them. On his part, Sharif called for more strategic relations between the two “brotherly nations".

In January this year, a delegation of senior Bangladeshi military officers visited Pakistan. The Bangladeshi navy participated in Pakistan’s annual multilateral naval exercise. There have also been reports that a delegation led by the director general of Pakistan’s notorious Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) General Asim Malik, recently visited Dhaka.

Besides, the Yunus regime has lifted traditional restrictions on the hitherto banned organisations, such as Hizb ut-Tahrir (HuT), Hamas, al-Qaeda, ISIS, Hefazat-e-Islam (HeI), and Ansar al-Islam. These organisations are now expanding their networks in the country. They have intensified their persecution of Hindus, Christians, and all other religious minorities.

Bangladesh today is a haven for activists of the Hizb ut-Tahrir. They can be seen chanting “Khilafat, Khilafat" at the country’s famous Baitul Mukarram Mosque. Dilly Hussain of HuT’s UK chapter is very active in the country. He has visited Bangladesh. He has been in constant touch with the leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP), formed by some Yunus loyalists.

Needless to mention, Hussain is a British-born citizen of Bangladeshi origin. He is a deputy editor of the Islamist website 5 Pillars. Hussain has a history of propagating anti-India and anti-Hindu rhetoric. Such elements are roaming free in the country. The Yunus regime has systematically placed Islamist radicals in key government, judicial, and military positions to shield them.

The Pakistani army and ISI provide the radical Islamists in Bangladesh financial and logistical support. The Yunus regime has lifted mandatory post-landing inspections for cargo arriving from Karachi.

The observers warn New Delhi must remain vigilant about the activities of the Yunus regime. This regime has released many radical Islamist elements from the country’s prisons. These elements have been notorious for their anti-India sentiments. Given the pattern of the Pakistani establishment’s behaviour, the current regime in Islamabad might use these anti-India elements based in Bangladesh to destabilise our north-eastern region.

India’s political command could direct its highly professional intelligence and security agencies to coordinate with their counterparts in the US, Israel, and other advanced democracies and dismantle the linkages the Yunus regime has with radical Islamists. All democracies are sure to come along in combating such linkages, for radical Islamism is a common threat to their shared values.

It would be naïve on the part of any democratic state to view the March 7 police-governmental “crackdown" on the HuT in Bangladesh as the Yunus regime’s intention to keep the radical Islamists away from itself. The crackdown was just a staged spectacle to hoodwink the advanced democratic world into believing that the current regime in Dhaka is civilised and it has no links to any radical Islamists.

The observers add that the progressive-minded citizens of Bangladesh need to be vigilant on the Islamist linkages of the Yunus regime. It is in Bangladesh’s overall interest to be close to secular India in its neighbourhood. India has always been behind the people of Bangladesh. The citizens of Bangladesh today could see in India’s friendship their future and multifaceted development. India has provided billions of dollars in loans to Bangladesh. It has provided Bangladesh food and power. It has provided Bangladesh raw materials for the garment industry, the mainstay of its economy.

Whitewashing of Sambhal mosque begins after Allahabad high court order

Mar 16, 2025

NEW DELHI: Whitewashing of Sambhal Jama Masjid began on Sunday after the orders of the Allahabad high court, which also allowed the mosque to be decorated with lights without any tampering.

The high court, in its March 12 order, permitted decorative lighting of the Masjid’s exterior, provided no structural modifications are made. The court scheduled the next hearing in the case for April 8.

The mosque, a Mughal-era structure, gained national attention following unrest on November 24, 2024, which left four people dead after a local court ordered a survey of the site.

The dispute around the Shahi Jama Masjid arose after a legal petition claimed that the mosque was built over an ancient Hari Har Mandir.

Hijra Community In Islam: Showing A Unique Form Of Agency

Tehmeena Rizvi

16 March 2025

The term "transgender" refers to a broad category of individuals whose gender identity or gender expression is different from their assigned sex at birth. Since they are not affected by sexual orientation, they are mostly referred to as the "third sex." They frequently face discrimination, stigma, and being "othered" due to a variety of sociocultural practices and beliefs. Their limited social inclusion and participation are the result of this. Within the social diversity of a vast nation such as India, transgender people are referred to as "hijras," and they are considered to be part of a distinct social group. Seldom are their experiences, viewpoints, and unfulfilled needs assessed.

The so-called "third sex" or gender in South Asia, known as hijra, is an institutionalised subculture of male-bodied, feminine-identified individuals who want to be "macho" males and who offer their male genitalia to a goddess in exchange for spiritual strength.

The uniqueness of hijras is that they exist beyond the sanctified social or familial structure but, paradoxically, in Indian society, the hijras find a place in history and mythology. For example, many Hindu deities manifest as both males and females or as a merging of the 2 sexes in their different incarnations; for example, Lord Vishnu as Mohini, an enchantress with the task of luring away the demons from the elixir of life (Amrita), or Ardhanarishwara (merging of Shiva and Parvati), respectively.

Scholarly interest inhijradates back to colonial times, when the apparent recalcitrance and irreducibility ofhijrato any neat conceptual category not only troubled the British colonial mind and European scholarly imagination but also posed a direct challenge to the classificatory imperatives of the colonial administration.

Gayatri Reddy (2005) isn’t the only one to notice the strong connection between Islam and hijra identity in India. While hijras have deep roots in Hindu traditions, she points out that many in the community show a special preference for Islam, often recalling a time when they held higher social status under Muslim rule. The Mughal emperors gave eunuchs important roles in their courts, particularly as harem guards, which, as Reddy suggests, made Islam a historical framework for accepting hijras.

Rahul Gandhi lambasted for Muslim 'bias': 4% quota for Karnataka contractors

J.P. Yadav

16.03.25

The BJP on Saturday accused Rahul Gandhi of indulging in “competitive appeasement politics” to push the party’s Karnataka government to grant a 4 per cent quota for Muslim contractors and asked why the Leader of the Opposition was frequently visiting Vietnam.

The Siddaramaiah government on Saturday approved amendments to pave the way for a 4 per cent reservation for Muslim contractors for tenders up to ₹1 crore that was seized on by the BJP.

Karnataka already has 24 per cent reservations for SCs and STs, 19 per cent for OBCs and now the government has decided to extend the benefit to Muslim contractors, seen as a move to consolidate the party’s vote base. The BJP fielded former law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad to slam the “unconstitutional decision”, claiming it had national implications and could potentially threaten national unity.

The Karnataka government’s 4 per cent Muslim reservation has been extended under full patronage and approval of Rahul Gandhi. The Siddaramaiah government doesn’t have the courage and the political capital to take such a decision,” Prasad said at a media address, targeting Rahul. He said that it was part of Rahul’s bid to score in the “communal and vote-bank politics” race among Opposition parties.

Quota For Muslim Contractors In Karnataka Height Of Appeasement: Chhattisgarh CM

Mar 16, 2025

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has said the ruling Congress' decision in Karnataka to reserve four per cent of government contracts for Muslims is "height of appeasement" and against the basic spirit of the Indian Constitution. In a statement on Saturday night, Sai asked Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party MP Rahul Gandhi to instruct Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to immediately withdraw the "unconstitutional" decision.

The Siddaramaiah government has given its nod for amending the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act to provide four per cent reservation in government tenders to Muslim contractors.

Sai said, "The decision is a well-planned conspiracy of the Congress to spread animosity in the society. The courts have already declared religion-based reservation unconstitutional, so this decision too will not stand before judicial review. The Congress is playing with the rights of the deprived sections just for vote bank politics."

'Who said reservation is only for Muslims? DK Shivakumar defends 4% quota amid BJP's 'appeasement' charge

Mar 16, 2025

Defending the move, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar clarified on Saturday that the policy is inclusive of all minority communities, not just Muslims.

The Karnataka government's decision to introduce a 4 per cent reservation for minorities in government contracts has sparked a political debate, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the Congress of appeasement politics.

Defending the move, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar clarified on Saturday that the policy is inclusive of all minority communities, not just Muslims.

Speaking at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee’s office, Shivakumar emphasized that the reservation applies only to contracts valued up to ₹2 crore, similar to provisions previously made for SC/ST communities, news agency ANI reported.

Responding to the BJP’s criticism, he remarked, “Everyone deserves a livelihood. If the BJP keeps targeting us, it only makes us stronger.”

Islamic State leader killed in ‘precision’ Iraq-US strike

March 15, 2025

By Hanne Cokelaere

A joint Iraq-U.S. operation killed a leader of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, according to Washington and Baghdad.

Abdallah Makki Muslih al-Rufay’i, also known as Abu Khadija, was responsible for Islamic State operations, logistics and planning and directed “a significant portion of finance for the group’s global organization,” the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement Friday.

Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said Khadija was considered “one of the most dangerous terrorists in Iraq and the world.” Khadija was killed by Iraq security forces and U.S. central command forces, Sudani said on X on Friday.

U.S. President Donald Trump trumpeted the strike on social media, writing that Khadija was“relentlessly hunted down by our intrepid warfighters.” Trump said the operation was carried out in coordination with the Iraqi government and the Kurdish regional government.

What it's like to fast during Ramadan as a top level athlete

RamazaniMwamba

16 Mar 2025

While fasting for Ramadan with her first child during the peak of the pandemic, Aneila Afsar gave herself the gargantuan task of representing Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics.

A taekwondo prodigy, Aneila already had a British Championship under her belt and was looking to go for gold at just 19-years-old. “There were a lot of things to do with that training." She told the M.E.N.

"The Olympics got delayed a year as well, so I was at home by myself with a toddler trying to train myself because her nursery had shut down.

“I was on zoom with a trainer trying to do some crazy stuff in my living room. I was fasting and trying to complete the final year of my degree.

With a lot to juggle, Aneila unfortunately failed to qualify for the Olympics. But she says she managed to learn a lot about what it takes to perform at your peak while observing the holy month.

“I’ve always fasted and trained so I feel like I’ve fine-tuned my body knowing when to eat and how to eat, when to train and how to do it." She explained.

Businesses welcome Coventry Road Ramadan crackdown - but old problems remain

Nick Horner

16 Mar 2025

A number of businesses have welcomed council action targeting illegal street traders and peddlers in a major Birmingham road.

Birmingham City Council has introduced a new Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) in Coventry Road in Small Heath, banning illegal sellers and peddlers, those collecting for charity and without a licence. It also aims to stop people ‘obstructing the public highway’ during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

And while shops have reported success on the trader front, the street is still suffering from congestion, parking issues, bins and goods blocking the pavements and food being thrown in the street.

Pakistan to file UN complaint against Taliban and India over terrorism support

By Fidel Rahmati

March 15, 2025

Pakistani media reported that Islamabad is preparing to file a complaint with the United Nations, accusing both the Taliban and India of supporting terrorism against Pakistan. The government has decided to present this complaint due to their involvement in cross-border terrorism and the support they allegedly provide to militant groups operating in Pakistan.

According to the Pakistani media outlets, on Friday, March 14, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram, stated that the complaint targets both the Taliban-controlled Afghanistan and India for their roles in facilitating terrorism. The allegations claim that these nations have supported terrorist activities that directly affect Pakistan’s security.

Akram emphasized that the next step for Pakistan will be to expose India’s complicity in supporting terrorism on the international stage. He made it clear that Pakistan will use all available diplomatic channels to bring attention to this issue and hold India accountable at the United Nations.

KP braves over half a dozen terrorist attacks

March 16, 2025

PESHAWAR / LAKKI MARWAT / BAJAUR: Two soldiers were martyred while nine terrorists were killed in two engagements in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the military’s media wing said on Saturday.

On the other hand, terrorists in LakkiMarwat and Bannu districts targeted police in over half a dozen attacks, which were repulsed by the policemen with the help of armed villagers, who assisted the law enforcers in both districts.

According to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the engagements, in which nine militants were killed, occurred on Friday and Saturday.

In the first encounter, security forces carried out an intelligence-based operation in the Mohmand district during which seven terrorists were killed after troops “effectively engaged” them at their location.

However, the ISPR added that Malakand district’s Havildar Muhammad Zahid, 37, and Chitral district’s Sepoy Aftab Ali Shah, 26, “rendered the ultimate sacrifice” and were martyred during the intense exchange of fire after “having fought gallantly”.

Pakistan may get 60 days to escape US travel restrictions

Anwar Iqbal

March 16, 2025

WASHINGTON: The United States may grant Pakistan 60 days to address security concerns and prevent potential travel restrictions, though some limitations may still apply, according to reports published by the American media outlets on Saturday.

Contrary to earlier speculation, a leaked draft of the proposal suggests that Pakistan will not be placed on the red list — reserved for countries facing a complete US travel ban. Diplomatic sources in Washington credit Islamabad’s renewed counterterrorism cooperation with the US for helping Pakistan avoid the most severe restrictions.

President Donald Trump, in a recent address to Congress, acknowledged Pakistan’s role in helping the US apprehend Mohammad Sharifullah, accused of orchestrating the 2021 Kabul airport bombing that killed 13 American service members and at least 170 Afghan civilians.

At the same time, Washington remains concerned about the rise in terrorist activities in Afghanistan. Some US officials still view Pakistan as a potentially valuable counterterrorism ally, but they also expect Islamabad to take further action to address security deficiencies.

Trump launches large-scale strikes on Yemen's Houthis, at least 31 killed

By Phil Stewart

March 16, 2025

WASHINGTON/ADEN, Yemen, March 15 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump launched large-scale military strikes against Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis on Saturday over the group's attacks against Red Sea shipping, killing at least 31 people at the start of a campaign expected to last many days.

Trump also warned Iran, the Houthis' main backer, that it needed to immediately halt support for the group. He said if Iran threatened the United States, "America will hold you fully accountable and, we won't be nice about it!"

The unfolding strikes - which one U.S. official told Reuters might continue for weeks - represent the biggest U.S. military operation in the Middle East since Trump took office in January. It came as the United States ramped up sanctions pressure on Tehran while trying to bring it to the negotiating table over its nuclear program.

"To all Houthi terrorists, YOUR TIME IS UP, AND YOUR ATTACKS MUST STOP, STARTING TODAY. IF THEY DON’T, HELL WILL RAIN DOWN UPON YOU LIKE NOTHING YOU HAVE EVER SEEN BEFORE!" Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.

Hamas agrees to release US-Israeli hostage, four bodies

16-03-2025

Hamas said on Friday it was ready to free an Israeli-American hostage and the remains of four others, after the Palestinian group and Israel resumed indirect Gaza ceasefire negotiations.

Israel, however, said Hamas had “not budged” following a proposal from US President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

After more than 15 months of war, the first phase of a truce between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip ended on March 1 without agreement on the next steps. A senior Hamas official said on Tuesday fresh talks had begun in Doha, with Israel also sending negotiators.

“Yesterday, a Hamas leadership delegation received a proposal from the brotherly mediators to resume negotiations,” the Palestinian group said in a statement.

Israeli captives' families vow to prevent Netanyahu from ‘derailing’ Gaza agreement

March 15, 2025

The Israeli captives’ families declared on Saturday that they would not allow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “derail the agreement with Hamas or turn Gaza’s tunnels into graves” for the Israeli hostages, Anadolu Agency reports.

“In the place where Netanyahu threatens to launch a new war, violating agreements and sacrificing the hostages, we will continue to send a clear message tonight: We will not allow you to turn Gaza’s tunnels into graves for our children,” they stated.

On Friday, a statement from the office of the US presidential envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and the National Security Council, published by the White House, stated that “President (Donald) Trump has made it clear that Hamas will either release hostages immediately, or pay a severe price.”

On Wednesday evening in Doha, Qatar, Witkoff and National Security Council Senior Director for the Middle East and North Africa Eric Trager presented a “bridge” proposal which would “allow time to negotiate a framework for a permanent ceasefire,” it said.

Nine Palestinians killed, including three journalists, in Israeli airstrike, Gaza health ministry says

15 March 2025

An Israeli airstrike in Gaza has killed at least nine Palestinians, including three local journalists, the territory's health ministry has said.

The strike hit a car, with casualties inside and outside the vehicle, and several people were critically injured, according to officials in the Gaza Strip.

Six volunteers from the Al Khair Foundation were "deliberately targeted" and killed while on their way to deliver aid in the northern town of Beit Lahia, said the UK-based international non-governmental organisation (NGO).

Among the six were the three journalists - Mahmoud al Sarraj, Mahmoud Isleem, and Bilal Abu Matar - who were recording humanitarian relief efforts for those affected by the war in Gaza, the foundation said.

The foundation said: "The first strike injured one team member, prompting them to move away, but a drone followed them and struck their vehicle directly with a second strike, killing them all."

In a statement, the Israeli military said it had struck two individuals who it identified as "terrorists" operating a drone that it said posed a threat to forces in Beit Lahiya.

The military did not say how it had established that the individuals it had struck were "terrorists" or provide details about the threat that the drone had posed to its troops.

Life of Imam Hassan al-Mujtaba in a glimpse

Mar 16, 2025

TEHRAN, Mar. 16 (MNA) – On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the second Imam of Shia, Imam Hassan al-Mijtaba (AS), the following report takes a brief look at the noble life of the holy Imam.

Imam Hassan Mujtaba (as) was the second Imam. He and his brother Imam Hussein were the two sons of Imam Ali (as) and Hadhrat Fatimah (as), the daughter of the Prophet.

Imam Hassan was born in the year 3 A.H. in Medina and shared in the life of the Prophet for somewhat over seven years, growing up during that time under his loving care.

After the death of the Prophet which was no more than three, or according to some, six months earlier than the death of Hadhrat Fatimah, Imam Hassan was placed directly under the care of his noble father.

Imam Hassan (AS) was extremely generous and gave away all his funds in the way of Allah.  No one went away from his door empty-handed. He sat down with the poorest of the poor when they invited him to share food with them. He was always hospitable and provided food for poor people.

The Holy Imam (as) helped his father throughout his life until Imam Ali (as) was martyred when the Holy Imam (as) was 37 years old. At this age, he inherited his father and became the guardian of Ahlul Bayt and the Shia. In his well-known will, Imam Ali (as) appointed him as the next Imam.

World leaders could learn a lesson from Ayatollah Khamenei

March 15, 2025

A man who today abrogates an agreement that he signed in 2020 (the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement or USMCA) after he did not like the 1994 agreement (the North American Free Trade Agreement or NAFTA) signed by an earlier president?

A man who changes his mind on tariffs on an hourly basis—on the products and on the countries he is targeting—seemingly ignorant of the impact of uncertainty on both goods and financial markets and the fact that changing tariffs cause profound changes in production and supply chains around the world?

A man who pardons those he calls “patriots” who stormed the U.S. Capitol, including some guilty of other crimes, but says that violent demonstrations against Tesla are domestic terrorism?

Deadly Israeli strikes on Palestinians, including journalists, mar fragile Gaza ceasefire

16 March, 2025

Gaza's civil defence agency said nine people including journalists were killed in Israeli strikes on Saturday, attacks which could further endanger the fragile truce in the Palestinian territory.

Following the strikes, the deadliest since the ceasefire took hold on January 19, Hamas accused Israel of a "blatant violation" of the truce which largely halted more than 15 months of fighting.

The truce's first phase ended on March 1 without agreement on the next steps, with Hamas insisting on moving onto the second phase, which Israel has refused. Tel Aviv has requested that the first phase of the truce is extended instead.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his negotiating team "to prepare for the continuation" of indirect talks with Hamas on the ceasefire, a statement from his office said on Saturday.

What does China Islamic Association’s rebrand reveal about Beijing’s integration drive?

15 Mar 2025

The semi-official China Islamic Association has removed its traditional Arabic-style green logo featuring stars above a mosque dome from both its website and social media account as Beijing pushes the sinicisation of religions in China.

The rebrand, which features a simpler blue logo, could alienate ordinary Muslims and provoke a sense of cultural erasure and suspicion, undermining the integration of Islam within mainstream Chinese society, analysts have warned.

Islamic Emirate committed to eradicating narcotics countrywide, ministry

March 15, 2025

KABUL: The spokesman of the Ministry of Interior Affairs, Mufti Abdul Mateen Qani said Friday in a statement that the Islamic Emirate has been committed to eradicating narcotics nationwide. Reacting to the recent report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), indicating that the price of one kilogram of opium in Afghanistan has increased tenfold compared to 2022, Qani said: “It is common that when there is no production and supply, it is obvious that the price increases several times.” The recent report of UNODC is an example of the seriousness of the Islamic Emirate in eradicating drugs in the country, the spokesman said, emphasizing that the amount of drug processing and trafficking has significantly decreased in the country. The UNODC report highlighted that the prices for opium in Afghanistan skyrocketed to $750 per kilogram in 2024, representing a tenfold increase from the $75/kg price in 2022, before the Islamic Emirate imposed a drugs ban. The post-ban decrease in production has led to a decline in opiate trafficking, with both heroin and opium seizures down about 50 percent in weight since 2021, the report concluded. The Kabul Times

Explained: Trump travel ban 2.0 to affect 43 countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan

by AnaghaJayakumar

March 15, 2025

After weeks of speculation , the Trump administration is gearing up to issue a sweeping series of travel restrictions on the citizens of 43 countries, including Afghanistan, Bhutan and Pakistan, The New York Times reported on Friday (March 14). These restrictions are set to be more far-reaching compared to those imposed in Trump’s previous term, the report said.

Donald Trump on January 20, the day of his inauguration, had issued an executive order directing cabinet members, including the Secretary of State, to compile a list of countries “for which vetting and screening information is so deficient as to warrant a partial or full suspension on the admission of nationals”.

Trump said that he intended to protect American citizens  “from aliens who intend to commit terrorist attacks, threaten our national security, espouse hateful ideology or otherwise exploit the immigration laws for malevolent purposes.” The order required a report to be furnished to the White House within 60 days, that is, by next week.

According to the draft list of recommendations accessed by The NYT, countries have been identified as belonging to one of three buckets.

Pakistan arrests 820 Afghan refugees, issues deportation deadline

By Fidel Rahmati

March 15, 2025

Pakistani media reported that over the past week, 820 Afghan migrants were arrested by Rawalpindi police, with 114 of them deported back to Afghanistan. According to Dawn Pakistan newspaper, 140 other migrants are being detained at Haji Camp due to the closure of the Torkham border crossing.

The report mentioned that the deportation process of Afghan migrants has been halted in recent days due to the closure of Torkham. This has resulted in a backlog of migrants waiting for the border to reopen.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior recently issued a warning to Afghan migrants holding Afghan Citizenship Cards (ACC), stating that they must leave the country by March 31, or face the risk of forced deportation.

According to reports, this directive will affect nearly 900,000 Afghan migrants who possess Afghan Citizenship Cards. The warning has intensified concerns among the Afghan migrant community, and international reactions to the deportation policies continue to grow.

According to a research paper, China has transferred several military technologies to Bangladesh in addition to weapons. March 15, 2025

MONTREAL - Federal officials marked International Day to Combat Islamophobia Saturday by calling on Canadians to push back against bigotry directed at the country’s Muslim communities. But one organization that defends the civil rights of Canada’s Muslim says not enough is being done to counter the rising tide of hate.

Amira Elghawaby, Canada’s Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia, issued a statement Saturday, saying Muslims in Canada face systemic barriers and are subjected to violence and discrimination. Islamophobia, she added, comes in the form of racism, stereotypes and hostility.

“In addition to individual acts of intolerance and racial profiling, Islamophobia can unfairly lead to viewing and treating Muslims as a greater security threat on an institutional and societal level,” she said.

Elghawaby touted actions the federal government has taken to tackle islamophobia, saying Ottawa has stepped up support for the Canada Community Security Program and Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy.

'Hell will rain down': US strikes Houthi rebels in Yemen — All you need to know

Mar 16, 2025

At least 31 people were killed as US President Donald Trump ordered large-scale military strikes against Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis on Saturday, according to Reuters. The action follows the group's attacks on Red Sea shipping, which Trump vowed to stop, warning that "hell will rain down" on the Houthis if they continue.

The Houthis have been targeting commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and other key maritime routes since late 2023.

They claim these attacks are in response to Israel’s blockade on Gaza. Despite a ceasefire in Gaza, the Houthis recently warned they would resume strikes on Israeli-linked ships.

Trump justified the strikes as necessary to protect global trade and US assets, stating, “No terrorist force will stop American commercial and naval vessels from freely sailing the Waterways of the World.” He also warned Iran, the Houthis’ main backer, to cease its support, threatening to hold Tehran “fully accountable.”

'If there are better options': Canada to review purchase of US-made F-35 fighter jets amid tariff war

Mar 16, 2025

Canada's news Prime Minister Mark Carney has directed their defense ministry to review an agreement to buy US-made F-35 fighter jets, signed by the previous Justin Trudeau administration, and determine if the deal is the 'best investment' for Canada."Prime Minister Mark Carney has asked the defense ministry to determine if the F-35 contract, as it stands, is the best investment for Canada, and if there are other options that could better meet Canada's needs," ministry spokesperson Laurent de Casanove said in a statement, according to news agency AFP.

"The deal has not been cancelled, but we need to do our homework given the changing environment, and make sure that the contract in its current form is in the best interests of Canadians and the Canadian Armed Forces," it stated.

In January 2023, the Trudeau administration signed a contract with US defense giant Lockheed Martin to purchase 88 F-35s for CAD 19 billion (USD 13.2 billion).

Carney's move, one of his first official acts since taking office on Friday, came two days after Portugal said it was re-examining a possible purchase of the F-35 fighters amid rising international anger over the tariff war US President Donald Trump has launched and his wavering support for the Atlantic alliance.

Donald Trump withdraws Biden-era lawsuits against Iowa and Oklahoma over immigration laws

Mar 16, 2025

The Trump administration on Friday withdrew lawsuits filed by the Biden-era Department of Justice (DOJ) against Iowa and Oklahoma over their immigration laws. These laws made it a state crime for anyone to remain in the state if they were in the US illegally.

Republican leaders in Iowa and Oklahoma argued that their states had to take action because the Biden administration had failed to control the southern border. Their laws allowed state and local officials to arrest people with outstanding deportation orders or those previously denied entry into the US. The laws were modeled after a similar measure in Texas.

The Biden administration sued Texas, Iowa, and Oklahoma, claiming that immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility. Texas’ law was briefly in effect before being halted by a federal court, while the Iowa and Oklahoma laws had been on hold pending legal review.

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond welcomed the dismissal, blaming the Biden administration for failing on border security. "The White House's negligence made our state law necessary," Drummond said.

Pope remains stable after month in hospital as he continues treatments and works from bedside

By Brie Stimson

March 15, 2025

Pope Francis remains stable as he continues his recovery one month after he was hospitalized for a bout of bronchitis that turned into pneumonia.

"The clinical conditions of the Holy Father have remained stable, confirming the progress highlighted in the last week," a medical bulletin from the Vatican’s Holy See Press Office said in an update on Saturday.

While working from the Gemelli hospital, the pope was able to sign off on a three-year reform project that aims to make the Church a more welcoming place.

Pope Francis to remain in hospital as his condition continues to improve

Gerard O’Connell

March 15, 2025

In the latest report on the health of Pope Francis, his doctors affirmed that his clinical condition “continues to remain stable” and “confirms the progress made over the last week.” In a Vatican report released on Saturday evening, March 15, Pope Francis’s medical team said the therapies that he is being given are producing “gradual improvements.”

The Vatican said the pope spent much time today—his 30th day in the hospital—doing “physiotherapy” and “praying” and “spent little time at work.” As on previous Sundays, the pope will not appear at his hospital window tomorrow, instead sending a written Angelus message that the Vatican will release at noon on Sunday, March 16.

He continues to receive “high-flow oxygen” during the day through nasal tubes. Doctors are also “progressively reducing the need for non-invasive mechanical ventilation at night,” meaning a reduction of the oxygen that he receives through the mask which he wears over his nose and mouth as he sleeps during the night. The doctors reaffirmed that Pope Francis “needs hospital medical therapy, both motor and respiratory physiotherapy” and reported that “at present, these therapies record further, gradual improvements.”

This was the first medical report on the pope’s condition in 72 hours, and his doctors said they do not anticipate releasing another update before next Tuesday or Wednesday (March 18 or 19), given that his condition is stable.

Anwar: Previous govts have failed Malaysia, we will not, reforms will happen

By R. Loheswar

16 Mar 2025

SHAH ALAM, March 16 —Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed his commitment to reforming Malaysia’s governance stating his tenure will not be dictated by fear-based politics but policies that strengthen government institutions and add to democratic accountability.

Speaking at DAP’s 18th annual congress in Shah Alam, Anwar said that Malaysia has long been failed by previous administrations but insisted his administration is on the right path.

“The question is not whether the government is good or bad. Governments before us have failed the people for 15 years but we are committed to doing better. Do not allow fear or racial politics to divide us,” he told the near 3000 congregation who came for today’s congress at Ideal Convention Centre in Shah Alam.

He said Malaysians should reject narratives that seek to undermine the government’s reform agenda by sowing distrust especially in the Malay community. He took shots at groups who keep claiming that the Malay race is under threat.

“There are those who use the Chinese community as a scapegoat saying they pose a threat to the Malays but the real issue is ensuring all Malaysians have access to opportunities out of their own hard work and volition and contributions.

“We are trying to change that and are committed to long term reforms rather than short term ones. Some people fear these changes while others can’t wait for it to happen. However, bear in mind that history has told us that revolutions often take time and rushed change without careful planning often fails,” he said.

Anthony Loke: I was ready to resign as minister if I couldn’t get PM to reconsider foundlings’ citizenship amendment

By Ida Lim

16 Mar 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 — DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke today said he was ready to step down as transport minister last year, if he had failed to get Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to drop the government’s planned constitutional amendment to remove abandoned babies’ right to automatic Malaysian citizenship.

Speaking at DAP’s 18th national congress, Loke revealed his readiness to give up his ministerial post in order to stick to the party’s principles.

Noting that the proposal to remove the right to automatic citizenship for foundlings last year had been criticised for not being humanitarian, Loke said MPs from within the ruling government and not just DAP had been uncomfortable with it.

Loke said he had called up DAP’s central leadership Central Executive Committee (CEC) and the party’s MPs in a meeting in March 2024, where he asked them to cast their votes in a secret ballot in the meeting before the proposed law change was expected to be brought to Parliament the next day.

With all present disagreeing with tabling the proposed constitutional amendment on foundlings except for four individuals, Loke said he told DAP MPs in the meeting that he respected their freedom to vote.

At DAP congress, Anwar backs 10-year PM limit, says ‘22 years, rosaknegara’

By Ida Lim

16 Mar 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today agreed that a Malaysian prime minister’s term should be capped at a maximum of 10 years, but said he still needs to get the support of two-thirds of MPs to change the Federal Constitution to carry out this reform.

Anwar, who is also PakatanHarapan chairman, was responding to DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke’s expressing the party’s hopes for this reform to be carried out within the next two years.

“I agree with limiting the position of prime minister to 10 years, because we know, if 22 years, rosaknegara (damage to the country),” he said at the DAP’s 18th national congress at Shah Alam.

While Anwar did not elaborate on his remark on 22 years, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had previously been the prime minister for 22 years in his first stint.

Wale Oke vows to oppose enemies of Nigeria, unites fellowship

by Olusegun Rapheal

March 16, 2025

The President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Wale Oke, has declared that the PFN will not only pray but also actively work against every enemy of Nigeria.

Oke emphasized that the PFN would not tolerate church leaders who deviate from the core doctrines of the Christian faith. He warned that it would no longer be business as usual for preachers who propagate messages contrary to the established teachings of the Christian body.

Expressing concerns over the decision of some northern governors to shut down schools during Ramadan, Bishop Oke described the move as anti-progress and detrimental to the nation’s educational development.

“The education of our children is fundamental to the protection of our nation. Closing schools for religious celebrations is inimical to the progress of our country,” he said.

Second Sunday of Lent: Honoring St. Gregory Palamas

Mar 16, 2025

On the Second Sunday of Lent the Orthodox Church commemorates our Holy Father Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessalonica, the Wonderworker. The feast day of Saint Gregory Palamas is November 14, however, he is commemorated on this Sunday as the condemnation of his enemies and the vindication of his teachings by the Church in the 14th century was acclaimed as a second triumph of Orthodoxy.

Our holy Father Gregory was born in Constantinople in 1296 of aristocratic parents who had emigrated from Asia Minor in the face of the Turkish invasion, and were attached to the court of the pious Emperor Andronicus II Palaeologus (1282-1328). Despite his official duties, Gregory’s father led a life of fervent prayer. Sometimes as he sat in the Senate, he would be so deep in prayer as to be unaware of the Emperor addressing him.

While Gregory was still young, his father died after being clothed in the monastic habit; and his mother for her part wanted to take the veil, but delayed doing so in order to take care of the education of her seven children.

Gregory, the eldest, was instructed by the most highly reputed masters of secular learning and, after some years, was so proficient in philosophical reasoning that, on listening to him, his master could believe he was hearing Aristotle himself.

Notwithstanding these intellectual successes, the young man’s real interest lay only with the things of God. He associated with monks of renown in the city and found a spiritual father in Theoleptus of Philadelphia, who instructed him in the way of holy sobriety and of prayer of the heart.

About the year 1316, Gregory decided to abandon the vanities of the world. His mother, two sisters, two brothers and a great many of his servants entered upon the monastic life with him. He and his two brothers went on foot to the holy Mountain of Athos, where they settled near the Monastery of Vatopedi under the direction of the Elder Nicodemus, who came from Mount Auxentius.

Gregory made rapid progress in the holy activity of prayer, for he had put into practice since childhood the fundamental virtues of obedience, humility, meekness, fasting, vigil and the different kinds of renunciation that make the body subject to the spirit.

Night and day he besought God ceaselessly with tears saying, “Lighten my darkness!” After some time, the Mother of God, in whom he had put his trust since his youth, sent Saint John the Theologian to him with the promise of her protection in this life and in the next.
