"Appalling Negligence Of India's Heritage":Scottish Historian AndIndologist Dalrymple Slams 17th Century Mubarak Manzil Demolition in Agra

Jan 5, 2025

AGRA: In a scathing critique, Scottish historian and Indologist William Dalrymple condemned the demolition of Agra's 17th-century Mubarak Manzil, calling it an "appalling negligence of India's heritage" and the main reason why the country fails to attract tourists from abroad despite its rich cultural past.

Sharing TOI's report on a social media platform, Dalrymple said, "One of the most important historic buildings in Agra destroyed with the full connivance of authorities. This is exactly why India attracts so few tourists."

In a continuation post on X, Dalrymple added, "Neglect your main heritage centres, allow developers to raze all its heritage properties, and then be surprised when this great country has fewer tourists than Dubai or Singapore."

According to the World Economic Forum Travel & Tourism Development Index, India attracted 11 million international tourists in 2019, a stark contrast to France's 90 million tourists that same year and Spain's 85 million in 2023.

Mubarak Manzil, located near the Iron Bridge in Agra, was documented on an 1868 map. During British rule, engineer A C Polwhele reported its use as a goods depot for the East Indian Railway. A marble plaque stated that Aurangzeb built it after the Battle of Samugarh. British archaeologist ACL Carlleyle's 1871 report detailed its architecture and historical significance.

The demolition of Mubarak Manzil has sparked widespread protests from locals, historians, and political leaders. Politicians have joined the outcry. Former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi criticised the act.

Shakeel Chauhan, national general secretary of the Tourist Guide Federation of India, said, "The Centre envisions making tourism a $1 trillion ecosystem with 100 million international tourist arrivals by 2047, but neglect towards heritage sites undermines this goal. Mubarak Manzil is not an isolated incident."

"Other sites in Agra, including Zohra Bagh, Lodhi-era structures, and Shahi Hammam, have also been destroyed. Reports of water leakage at the Taj Mahal and damage to 400-year-old paintings at Akbar's Tomb further dent India's image as a tourist destination," he added.

Bangladesh’s Election Commission to probe Awami League-era national elections

January 04, 2025

Bangladesh’s Election Commission (EC) has decided to investigate irregularities and shortcomings in all previous elections, including the three preceding elections that have been controversial during the Awami League-rule in 2014, 2018 and 2024.

The Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported that following a meeting, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin instructed all 10 regional election officers to examine the reasons behind the decline in the electoral system and submit detailed reports.

The CEC issued written directives, asking regional officials to identify past irregularities and deficiencies and report their findings to the EC secretariat.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of former prime minister Khaleda Zia and allied parties boycotted the 2014 election, resulting in one-sided voting and unopposed election of 153 candidates, an unprecedented occurrence in the country’s electoral history.

The 2018 election was marred by allegations of rigging and came to be known as the “midnight election”, with the BNP and its allies winning only seven seats.

The BNP and like-minded parties abstained from participating in the January 2024 election that faced criticism for allegedly fielding dummy candidates from the ruling Awami League as opposition representatives. As a result, the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League managed to secure a fourth consecutive term in office.

Following the reconstitution of the EC, demands for a thorough investigation into these elections were raised by civil society, media representatives, and prominent individuals. They stressed the need for electoral reforms and accountability to restore public trust.

In his directive to officials, the CEC emphasised the importance of delivering free, fair, and impartial elections. CEC Nasir Uddin asked the electoral officers to adopt the good practices and discard the bad ones.

“The EC is committed to earning the nation’s trust by delivering transparent elections. Field officers must always be prepared to organise elections at short notice,” he said.

The newly formed EC, which assumed office on November 21, has already initiated several reform measures while preparing for the 13th National Election.

A few days ago, CEC Nasir Uddin said that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League may participate in elections unless the government or the judiciary issues a ban against the party.

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, 84, who was sworn-in to lead the interim government after the ouster of Hasina in August, during his Victory Day speech on December 16 indicated that elections might be held by early 2026.

“Broadly speaking, the election can be scheduled between the end of 2025 and the first half of 2026,” he said. Yunus said that the elections would be held after updating the voters’ list.

Khamenei Tells Pope Francis: Muslims And Christians Should Unite Against Global Arrogance

January 4, 2025

TEHRAN – Pope Francis has received a beautifully crafted plaque featuring excerpts from the Leader of the Islamic Revolution's speeches about Prophet Jesus (pbuh).

Created by the Islamic Revolution Cultural Research Institute, the plaque was translated into Italian and presented as an exquisite tablet. Pope Francis warmly welcomed the gift and expressed his deep appreciation. He remarked that the text contained "significant and prominent points that could be impactful and influential for followers of the Christian faith.”

The excerpts from Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei’s speeches emphasized the profound importance of Prophet Jesus in Islam, stating that he is held in no less esteem than he is by devoted Christians. The text portrayed Jesus as a figure who spent his life fighting against oppression, aggression, and corruption, challenging those who used wealth and power to exploit others. It urged followers of Christ to emulate his path by standing against injustice and promoting a just world order. The plaque underscored that "If Jesus Christ (pbuh) were among us today, he wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to fight the leaders of oppression and Global Arrogance," and advocate for human virtues.

During the meeting, Pope Francis also shared his deep concern about the ongoing situation in the region, particularly the ongoing Israeli aggressions against Palestinians. He mentioned that he is regularly updated on developments through his representative in Palestine.

SeyyedAbolhasanNavab, founder of Iran’s University of Religions and Denominations, was also present during the meeting with Pope Francis. In his remarks to the religious leader, he emphasized the urgent need for peace and justice in the wake of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He stated, "We have no problem with the Jews; the problem is with Netanyahu," highlighting the distinction between the Jewish community and political actions that contribute to conflict.

Appreciating Pope Francis's stance on defending the oppressed people of Palestine, Navab remarked, "Religious leaders have proven that they are always alongside the people and the voice of human suffering."

Navab underscored the importance of solidarity among all people, regardless of race, color, ethnicity, religion, or sect. "The heart of every fair-minded person aches when they witness oppression.”

How Recent Campaign For Introduction Of Sharia Law In South-West Started

By Raji Adebayo

Jan 5, 2025

IBADAN – An Islamic scholar and a Kwara judge, Justice Abdur-Raheem Ahmad Sai, has said non-recognition of Muslims by family law in the Southwest geo-political zone necessitated the planned establishment of the Sharia Arbitration Panel.

He disclosed this at a function in Lagos to clear the air on the misconception over the planned establishment of a panel in Oyo town, Oyo State.

Oyo State, like any other state in the Southwest, is renowned not only for its rich cultural heritage, but also diverse religions, which include Islam, Christianity, and traditional religious beliefs.

But, recently, a wave of anxiety gripped the state and the cause is no more than a viral post on X (formerly Twitter) that brought to the fore conversations around introducing Sharia law in the Southwest, specifically in Oyo town.

The post, shared on December 20, 2024, by AbdulQowiyyOlalekan Imam-Oníde (@A_ QowiyyBadmus), stated that “Since the southwest states have left Muslims without any trial court of competent jurisdiction on their matters, despite S. 275 (1) of the 1999 CFRN allowing every state to have one, Muslims have resorted to ISPs. Oyo Alaafin is launching its own in January.”

The post also contained “an invitation from the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria, Oyo chapter, for the inauguration of a Sharia court in Oyo town on January 11, 2025. The event, to be held at the Muslim Community Islamic Centre, Mobolaje Area, Oyo.

This announcement sparked a heated debate on social media, in the streets of Ibadan, the state capital, and across the state, raising concerns over its implications for hitherto unity and social harmony among the residents.

Following the outcry, the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (Oyo branch), later announced the indefinite postponement of its plan to inaugurate a Sharia court in Oyo town.

According to him, “About the establishment of Sharia court in Oyo town, people may try, but for us, I swore to uphold our laws and the Constitution of Nigeria. If their actions are within the law, fine, if not, they should expect that I will insist the law must be followed.”

But speaking on the issue, Ahmad Sai said there was a misconception over the issue, noting that it is not Sharia Court, but Sharia Arbitration Panel which is in consistency with the provisions of Arbitration and Reconciliation, recently amended in 2023.

According to him, “We are not establishing Sharia Court or Law, but Sharia Arbitration Panel. We want to thank Governor SeyiMakinde of Oyo State for his promptness. But, I want to tell the governor, he should not be moved by the ignorance of the ignorant people.

“This is not a matter of law and security, Muslims in Oyo state like any other parts of the world, are like any organisation and their members have freedom and rights to regulate the law of their personal status in arbitrary panels created by themselves.

“That arbitration panel is very well in accordance with the provisions of Arbitration and Reconciliation, recently amended in 2023, so it is non issue.

“The family law in Lagos stated that there are no Muslims in Lagos, it is just recently that Lagos designated a Customary Court to exercise Sharia jurisdiction, but Sharia is different, customary law is different, which the Supreme Court has cleared it. The Customary Court cannot administer Sharia.

“How can Muslims, who take like 60/70 percent of Lagos indigenes, not have law, the family law that builds the society is what that doesn’t recognise Muslims and that is what necessitated Sharia Arbitration Panel. And this should not be a concern for other religious bodies on what Muslims are doing for themselves.

“If you cannot give us a court of Sharia jurisdiction either at the first instance or appeal, we hold it a fundamental right to organise ourselves within the society. The Arbitration Panel is to settle the dispute that may occur among the Muslims.

“They didn’t talk about Sharia Court. They were talking about launching a Sharia Arbitration panel. This is not a matter of Law. It has been established in Lagos, Ibadan, Ogbomoso and few other places. It is mainly for Muslims. The panel is organised by the Muslims for the Muslims family. So it should not be of any concern to the Christians.

“It is not a court but panel, court creation is a function of House of Assembly with assent by the executive governor, no individual or organisation can create court, use of court is a misuse, it is Arbitration Panel, there are several Arbitration Panels, which are regulated by laws”.

Also in a statement signed by the Chairman, Committee for the inauguration of a Sharia Arbitration Panel in Oyo town, Dr Rafiu Bello stated that, “This is to inform the general public on behalf of the entire Muslim Community of Oyo town that the inauguration ceremony of Independent Shari’a Arbitration Panel of Oyo town, initially slated for 11th of January, 2025 at Oyo Muslim Community Islamic Centre, Agbogangan, Oyo has been postponed and new date will be announced later.

“The postponement is informed by the inadvertent reference of the programme as inauguration ceremony of Shari’a Court in Oyo town and its environs instead of Independent Shari’a Arbitration Panel.

“Such Arbitration Panel, which already exists in many parts of the South West, is only meant to settle family disputes among willing Muslims, without any power of enforcement. It is not a court.

Muslim Jamat President:Kumbh Mela Being Organised On Waqf Land, Hindu Mahasabha President Calls For His Arrest Saying He Is Sponsored By Pakistan

5 January, 2025

Just a week before the start of Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, a cleric has stoked a controversy by claiming that the event is being held on land owned by the Waqf Board. Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, president of the All India Muslim Jamat, has claimed that 55 Bighas of Waqf land are being used for the Hindu religious event.

In a video message, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi said that Muslims of Prayagraj have shown a large heart by allowing the mela on Waqf land, and Hindus should reciprocate by allowing the Muslims to enter the event. He slammed the call by All India Akhara Parishad to bar non-Hindus from the Kumbh.

Barelvi said, ‘Akhara Parishad, Naga Sanyasis, swamis and babas have banned the entry of Muslims from Kumbh Mela. On the other hand, a Muslim man named Sartaz from Prayagraj has said that the land where preparations are being made for the Kumbh Mela belongs to the Waqf, and it is owned by local Muslims. But see the large-heartedness of Muslims, they have not raised any objections over the 55 bigha of waqf land being used for the Kumbh.’

Lt Governor Appoints Delhi Waqf Board CEO Amid Row Over Imams' Salary Dues

Kumar Kunal

Jan 4, 2025

In a decisive step to address the prolonged operational stagnation of the Delhi Waqf Board, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena approved the appointment of Azimul Haque as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on an interim basis. This decision comes amid criticism from the Lt Governor, who accused the AAP government of negligence and failing to follow proper legal protocols.

The Lt Governor's Secretariat noted that the CEO position had been vacant since November 28, 2024, leading to significant disruptions in the Board’s functions.

The absence of leadership hindered essential activities, including the disbursement of salaries to Imams and Mutawallis, leaving the Board effectively paralysed.

Acknowledging the financial hardships faced by the clergy and Board staff due to these delays, LG Saxena approved Azimul Haque’s appointment but emphasised that it must be formally ratified by the Board before taking effect.

‘Demand for Pak was popular in Mlpm’

Jan 5, 2025

Kozhikode: In a statement that could spark debates and discussions, senior CPM leader Paloli Mohammed Kutty said, "Before independence, the strongest demand for a separate nation as Pakistan, came from Malappuram district."

Kutty, who was the first district secretary of CPM in Malappuram, was responding to a question about why the Muslim League gained significant prominence in Malappuram. This was during an interview featured in the souvenir released in connection with the CPM's Malappuram district conference.

"Muslim League advocated for the formation of Pakistan. This demand was most strongly raised in the Malappuram district, in the country. At that time, prominent individuals in the Muslim community were supportive of British rule. Therefore, they received favourable support from the British for their demand for Pakistan," Paloli Mohammed Kutty said.

All India Muslim Jamat president claims that Kumbh Mela is being organised on Waqf land,     5 January, 2025

But see the large-heartedness of Muslims, they have not raised any objections over the 55 bigha of waqf land being used for the Kumbh.’

He added that while Muslims have shown a large heart, Hindu groups are showing narrowness by not allowing Muslims in the Kumbh Mela.

However, Hindu leaders have rejected the claims made by the Muslim cleric. Hindu Mahasabha President Swami Chakrapani Maharaj said that Maulana Shahabuddin must be sponsored by Pakistan and ‘people with a terrorist mindset’. He said that the cleric is making a malicious attempt to disturb the Maha Kumbh, and his statements should be investigated.

‘I believe that immediate action should be taken against people who spoil the atmosphere in this way. FIR should be registered against them and they should be arrested. If such people are out, they will keep talking such nonsense and spoil the atmosphere of the country,’ Chakrapani Maharaj said.

Cops Foil Attempt To Smuggle Drugs In Afghanistan

Jan 04, 2025

Kabul: Units of counter-narcotics police have foiled attempts to smuggle some 1,000 kg of illicit drugs and objects used in manufacturing heroin in western Afghanistan's Nimroz province, Provincial Director for Counter-Narcotics Police Abdul Wasi Raihan said Saturday. Without providing more details, the official admitted that no one had been arrested.

In similar operations, police apprehended a drug smuggler and discovered 66 kg opium poppy from his possession in Kang district of Nimroz province on Wednesday, district police chief Mawlawi Ahmad Sayed said.

The Afghan caretaker government, which has banned poppy cultivation, processing of drugs and drug trafficking, has vowed to fight the menace until the once-poppy growing country becomes a drug-free nation. Afghanistan, a country deeply affected by decades of war and civil strife, is reportedly home to more than three million drug addicts.

To overcome the challenge, the Afghan caretaker government, which has banned poppy cultivation and drug trafficking, has committed to eradicating drug production and addiction. Currently, a total of 550 rehabilitated drug addicts are receiving training to become skilled workers inside the Aghosh camp, a vocational centre in Pul-e-Charkhi locality on the eastern edge of Kabul city, Xinhua news agency reported.

"I have been living in the Aghosh camp for five months. I am in good health and working on the shoe-making project," said Faridullah, a recovered addict, who has been learning shoe-making art to open a shop in the future.

Afghan refugees in Tajikistan facing risk of deportation

By Fidel Rahmati

Afghans who fled to Tajikistan after the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan report facing difficulties with residency and exploitation by entities that claim to support migrants.

An Afghan refugee in Tajikistan told Khaama Press that many refugees, despite possessing all necessary documents for legal residency, are at risk of deportation. He said, “For over a month now, we’ve been under threat of deportation without any valid reason. The Afghanistan Embassy in Tajikistan and other organizations formed to assist migrants are aware of this issue but have taken no action.”

This situation has left refugees highly vulnerable. Many have fallen prey to institutions and offices that claim to resolve migrants’ issues. These entities exploit the vulnerability of refugees by demanding large sums of money in exchange for promises of residency facilitation.

According to the refugee, these offices take advantage of the refugees’ fear of deportation, even though they already have the necessary documents for legal residency in Tajikistan. The looming threat of expulsion has caused significant anxiety among the Afghan migrant community.

Ayatollah Khamenei urges increased focus on Imams Jawad, Hadi, and Askari in literature and art

January 4, 2025

TEHRAN – During a meeting on Saturday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei highlighted the importance of Imam Jawad (AS), Imam Hadi (AS), and Imam Askari (AS) in the history of Islam.

He criticized the insufficient mention of these esteemed Imams in sermons and literature, emphasizing their unparalleled role in the quantitative and qualitative expansion of Shi'ism during their eras.

During the closing of a mourning ceremony for the martyrdom of Imam Hadi (AS), the Leader underscored the necessity of addressing the lives and teachings of these Imams in various historical and artistic fields. Iranian foreign minister warns of ‘large-scale war’ if Israel attacks again

January 5, 2025

Iran’s top diplomat said Tehran is ready for any future Israeli attacks on the country, warning that such action could spark a wider conflagration, in comments aired Saturday.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s remarks to Chinese state-run media come amid rising concern that Iran could move toward pursuing a nuclear weapon as it is increasingly pushed into the corner following a series of devastating blows, coupled with the looming inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, who maintained a hawkish stance toward Tehran his last time in office.

Speculation has also arisen that Israel may strike Iran in response to recurring ballistic missile attacks launched against Israel by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, which receive arms and other support from the Islamic Republic.

“We are fully prepared for the possibility of further Israeli attacks,” Araghchi said to China’s state-run CCTV, according to a translation provided by the broadcaster. “I hope Israel will refrain from taking such reckless action, as it could lead to a large-scale war.”

Israel has carried out two direct attacks on Iran over the past year in response to unprecedented drone and missile attacks, including an October 1 barrage of some 200 ballistic missiles, most of which were intercepted.

Israeli warplanes carried out a counterstrike on October 26, hitting military facilities and air defenses protecting other key sites.

In April, Israel hit an air defense battery near a nuclear site in response to a volley of some 300 drones and missiles fired at Israel by Iran.

Bad news for Ukraine as Iran bolstering Russian military with two cutting-edge weapons, they are… and…

By Tahir Qureshi

January 4, 2025

New Delhi: In the past few years, Iran has become the focal point in West Asia and has emerged as one of the major players not only in the region but at a global level too. Despite being under heavy sanctions, it has developed some of the most remarkable weapon systems including ballistic and cruise missiles, drones, and air defence systems.

In fact, it has been reported that Russia has caused a lot of destruction in Ukraine with the drones it has received from Iran.

MilitaryNewsUA on January 2, 2025, reported on X that Iranian sources have indicated a convoy of vehicles spotted at the port of Bandar-e Anzali, at the Caspian Sea, believed to be transporting advanced missile systems and air defense units to Russia.

According to these sources, the shipments are reported to include Fath-360 and Arman air defense systems, both of which could significantly enhance Russian military capabilities in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This development comes at a time of heightened tensions and underscores the growing military cooperation between the two nations amid the war.

The Fath-360, a short-range ballistic missile developed by Iran, has garnered significant attention due to its potential use in combat against both land and maritime targets. As part of Iran’s expanding arsenal of precision-guided munitions, the Fath-360 is comparable to the U.S. HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) terms of role and versatility. With a reported range of 120 kilometers and a speed of up Mach 4, the Fath-360 is equipped with a 150 kg warhead, making it highly effective for targeting large, soft assets such as command centers, radar installations, or enemy armor.

"Showing Me As An Alhaji”: Pastor Adeboye Speaks on AI Photo of Him as Muslim

by  Bada Yusuf

January 05, 2025

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has commented on the trending AI-generated picture of him dressing like an Alhaji.

Social media was recently bombarded with the image of Adeboye putting on Islamic garments, suggesting that the pastor was in the Holy Land of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

According to Vanguard, Adeboye acknowledged the image during the first Holy Ghost Night of the new year, held on January 4. With a wry smile, he remarked, "I'm sure many of you saw that picture showing me as an alhaji." The image sparked widespread attention and debate online, with many expressing shock and amusement at the manipulated image.

For those unfamiliar, an alhaji is a male figure who has completed the Hajj rituals on a holy pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. The female counterpart is referred to as an alhaja. The image of Adeboye as an alhaji was likely intended to be humorous or thought-provoking, but it also highlights the potential for AI-generated content to be misused or misunderstood.

GovOkpebholo Thinks He Can Disregard Court Rulings, It Will Never Happen – PDP

5 January 2025

By UdezeEkene

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned what they called disregard of court judgements by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, concerning local government chairmen in the state.

The Chairman, Edo PDP chapter, Anthony Aziegbemi, said the letter from the Governor concerning the previously suspended 18 local government chairmen was illegal and could not stand.

In an interview with Arise News on Saturday, Aziegbemi stated that section 10 (1) which Governor Okpebholo relied on had already been nullified by a Supreme Court ruling.

He argued that the Governor failed to pay attention to a High Court judgement concerning relying on either Section 10(1) and Section 20 of the Constitution.

“First, it has to be made very clear, that letter in the first instance was an illegal letter. That letter shouldn’t have been written in the first instance if the governor knew what he was doing because as at the time he wrote that letter, the Chief Judge of Edo state had given a ruling that section 10(1) of the Edo state local government law has been annulled and repealed by the judgement of the supreme court. So he has no business writing that letter in the first instance.

“The Assembly in their own naivety I would say, didn’t rely on that section that he premised his letter on. They relied on Section 20 which talks about suspension. It is after that resolution by the House of Assembly that all hell has been let loose in Edo State,” he said.

PTI wants ‘real decision-makers’ in talks with govt

January 5, 2025

ISLAMABAD: The negotiations between the government and the PTI seem to be heading towards a standoff, as after almost two weeks of talks, the former ruling party has asked the government to include the ‘stakeholder’, who wields actual decision-making powers, in the process to avoid any ambiguity in the agreement.

leader Asad Qaiser, who is a member of the negotiation committee, did not name the establishment, but said that they had asked the government to include “the stakeholder” in the dialogue because “the thinking of those who have the real decision-making powers is yet to be seen”.

Speaking on a Dawn News programme hosted by Nadir Guramani, he said the decisions actually “are to be made by those who have installed” this government. He added that the PTI had given the government time for consultations in this regard. The PTI leader’s stance is not new, however. Before these talks, the PTI had repeatedly snubbed the government’s talks offer, saying it would negotiate with the establishment instead of the ‘Form-47 government’.

Mr Qaiser also threatened to walk out of the dialogue if the government did not provide the PTI committee “uninterrupted access” to party’s founding chairman Imran Khan, who is incarcerated in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail.

At present, the PTI, despite making a commitment to share its demands in writing with the government committee, has not done the same, which, according to the government committee’s spokesperson Irfan Siddiqui, could damage the talks process.

Govt to take another shot at separating IRS, Customs

Mubarak Zeb Khan

January 5, 2025

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the separation of two revenue collection bodies, Customs and Inland Revenue Services (IRS), a move strongly resisted by tax groups in the past.

The prime minister accorded his approval last month to the recommendation submitted by the task force for overhauling the maritime sector.

The committee had proposed at least 99 measures, ranging from infrastructure rehabilitation to enhanced facilitation at ports, with specified timelines for implementation, according to official documents seen by Dawn.

Under the existing structure, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is an overarching body, with IRS and Customs being two of its wings, as per the revenue authority’s website.

This included a policy board to develop income tax, sales tax and federal excise duty policies. The board, headed by the finance minister, would have members from the private sector.

These boards will be chaired by a retired tax official or an expert nominated by the finance minister. These boards would also have representations from the private sector.

Truckers flay ‘illegal tax’ at Torkham

Ibrahim Shinwari

January 5, 2025

KHYBER: Truckers taking trade goods to Afghanistan have expressed their resentment over ‘imposition of an illegal tax’ by local transporters’ unions, which was charged on the Peshawar-Torkham highway prior to their crossing the border.

Drivers alleged that representatives of at least five local transporters’ unions, who recently formed an alliance, were charging every loaded vehicle Rs1,000 octroi in the name of regulating vehicular traffic on the main road and reducing congestion at the border point.

The trade goods transporters said these unions were not registered with any government department, and thus they were not authorised to demand an illegal tax from transporters.

They alleged that the alliance’s representatives would use rough language with drivers and their assistants and make them wait for long hours at the border point if the imposition of illegal tax was questioned or they refused to pay it.

The transporters also claimed that despite a designated parking area in Torkham, which was built and managed by National Logistics Cell, they were forced to park their vehicles in an open and insecure compound near the Hamza Baba mausoleum in LandiKotal, which lacked basic facilities.

They alleged the district administration arrested three representatives of the transporters’ alliance while issuing ‘permits’ to drivers in ZeenTharra area on Wednesday only to release them the same day after striking a ‘deal’ with them.

Umno, PAS Leaders Clash Over Tomorrow’s Planned Solidarity Rally For Najib After Royal Decree

By Malay Mail

05 Jan 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 — Senior Umno members want political rival PAS and several non-governmental organisations to cancel their solidarity rally for convicted former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in Putrajaya tomorrow, saying it’s not proper to proceed after the palace has issued a royal decree.

Umno supreme council member Datuk MohdPuadZarkashi said he supported his party leadership’s decision to respect the decree and cancel the January 6 gathering outside the Palace of Justice that it had originally planned, Mingguan Malaysia reported today.

“Thus, it is only right for PAS and other NGOs to cancel their plans. If Umno, as the party directly affected by Najib’s case, has made this decision, then why shouldn’t other parties do the same?” Puad was quoted as saying by the Sunday edition of Malay daily, Utusan Malaysia.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled backed Puad’s view and accused the Islamist party of using the planned solidarity rally for Najib – a former Umno leader – as a “political tool”.

“Those who insist that the gathering on January 6 is legitimate and will continue, disregarding the advice of the authorities, are players in ‘politics without morality’.

Saudi Arabia’s first ‘recycled road’ built in Al-Ahsa

Arab News

January 05, 2025

RIYADH: The Roads General Authority has completed construction of a road using recycled construction and demolition waste for the first time in the Kingdom, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Saturday.

The project, a collaboration with Al-Ahsa municipality and the National Center for Waste Management, incorporated waste material into the asphalt layers of a road in the Al-Ahsa governorate, following research by the authority to assess the performance of asphalt and gravel layers made from aggregates sourced from the municipality’s environmental landfill.

Using recycled material in infrastructure projects supports the Kingdom’s goal of transitioning to a circular economy. The target is a 60 percent recycling rate for such waste by 2035, which “highlights the Kingdom’s commitment to environmental sustainability and efficient infrastructure development,” the SPA said.

A move toward Christianity stirs in a Muslim land

January 04, 2025

The Catholic priest stood at the altar in the hilltop church for the mass baptism, dunking dozens of heads in water and tracing a cross with his finger on each forehead. Then he rejoiced at Christianity’s recovery of souls in a land where the vast majority of people are Muslim — as the men, women and children standing before him had been. The ceremony was one of many in recent months in Kosovo, a formerly Serbian territory inhabited largely by ethnic Albanians that declared itself an independent state in 2008. In a census last spring, 93% of the population professed itself Muslim and only 1.75% Roman Catholic. A small number of ethnic Albanian Christian activists, all converts from Islam, are urging their ethnic kin to look to the church as an expression of their identity. They call it the “return movement,” a push to revive a pre-Islamic past they see as an anchor of Kosovo’s place in Europe and a barrier to religious extremism spilling over from the Middle East. Until the Ottoman Empire conquered what is today Kosovo and other areas of the Balkans in the 14th century, bringing with it Islam, ethnic Albanians were primarily Catholics. Under Ottoman rule, which lasted until 1912, most of Kosovo’s people switched faiths. By reversing that process, said the Rev. Fran Kolaj, the priest who carried out the baptisms outside the village of Llapushnik, ethnic Albanians can recover their original identity. Ethnic Albanians, who trace their roots to an ancient people called the Illyrians, live mainly in Albania, a country on the Adriatic Sea. But they also make up a large majority of the population in neighboring Kosovo and more than a quarter of the population in North Macedonia. At the church where the baptisms took place, nationalist emblems jostle with religious iconography. The double-headed eagle symbol of Albania decorates the steeple and also a screen behind the altar. “It is time for us to return to the place where we belong — with Christ,” Kolaj said in an interview. In many Muslim lands, renouncing Islam can bring severe punishment, sometimes even death. So far, the baptism ceremonies taking place in Kosovo have stirred no violent opposition, though there have been some angry denunciations online. (It is not known how many conversions have taken place.) But historians, who agree that Christianity was present in Kosovo long before the Ottoman Empire brought Islam, question the thinking behind the movement. “From a historical perspective, what they say is true,” said DurimAbdullahu, a historian at Kosovo’s University of Pristina. But, he added, “their logic means that we should all become pagans” because the people living on the territory of today’s Kosovo before the arrival of Christianity and later Islam were nonbelievers. Like many other Kosovars, Abdullahu said he believed that Serbia, which has a mostly Orthodox Christian population, had helped stoke the return movement as a way of sowing discord in Kosovo. While Serbia has long been accused of undermining Kosovo’s stability, there is no evidence it has been promoting the conversions. Archaeologists in 2022 uncovered the remains of a sixth-century Roman church near Pristina, and in 2023 found a mosaic with an inscription indicating that early Albanians, or at least a people perhaps related to them, were Christians. Still, Christophe Goddard, a French archaeologist working at the site, said it was wrong to impose modern concepts of nation and ethnicity on ancient peoples. “This is not history but modern politics,” he said. Traces of Kosovo’s distant pre-Islamic past also survived in a small number of families that clung to Roman Catholicism despite the risk of being ostracized by their Muslim neighbors. Marin Sopi, 67, a retired Albanian language teacher who was baptized 16 years ago, said his family had been “closet Catholics” for generations. In childhood, he recalled, he and his family observed Ramadan with Muslim friends but secretly celebrated Christmas at home. “We were Muslims during the day and Christians at night,” he said. Since coming out as a Christian, he said, 36 members of his extended family have formally abandoned Islam. Islam and Christianity in Kosovo mostly coexisted in peace — until Orthodox Christian soldiers and nationalist paramilitary gangs from Serbia began torching mosques and expelling Muslims from their homes in the 1990s. Foreign Christian missionaries have kept their distance from Kosovo’s conversion campaign. But some ethnic Albanians living in Western Europe have offered support, seeing a return to Catholicism as Kosovo’s best hope of one day entering the European Union, a largely Christian club. Arber Gashi, an ethnic Albanian living in Switzerland, traveled to Kosovo to attend the baptism ceremony at the church in Llapushnik, which overlooks the scene of a major battle in 1998 between Serb forces and the Kosovo Liberation Army. He and other activists worry that funding for mosque-building and other activities from Turkey and countries in the Middle East like Qatar and Saudi Arabia, with their more conservative approaches, threatens Koso

American influencer Kristen Fischer’s cultural clash with India’s Late-night dinner parties: ‘I’m always sitting there hungry’

Jan 5, 2025

Since moving to India in 2021, American influencer Kristen Fischer has had her fair share of cultural surprises. But it’s India’s unique approach to dinner parties that has left her scratching her head, and she’s not afraid to admit it. In a viral Instagram video, Kristen opened up about her biggest cultural adjustment: the Indian tradition of prioritizing socializing over immediate dining, a concept that initially baffled her.

“Every time I’m sitting there hungry, I’m wondering when the food is going to be served,” she confessed, explaining her struggle with the delay in meals at Indian dinner gatherings. Accustomed to the punctual, meal-first American dinner parties, Kristen found the laid-back Indian approach a challenging but fascinating experience.

Kristen’s tale of cultural confusion continues with her revelation that, in America, dinner parties are about eating first and socializing after. In India, however, the socializing part takes precedence—often well into the night. “In America, the conversation happens after the meal, but in India, it’s before. Imagine my surprise when guests don’t show up on time and don’t want to eat right away,” Kristen described. She recounted an eye-opening experience at a friend’s dinner party where, despite showing up on time, the meal wasn’t served until well past 11 p.m.

Musk slams Biden’s Medal of Freedom for Soros: ‘A travesty’ sparks GOP outrage

Jan 5, 2025

Elon Musk ignited a firestorm after President Joe Biden awarded billionaire financier George Soros the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, on Saturday. Known for his sharp criticism of Soros, Musk called the recognition a "travesty" during a podcast appearance, claiming Soros “fundamentally hates humanity.”

Taking his disapproval further, Musk posted a meme on Twitter comparing Soros to Darth Sidious from Star Wars, quipping, “George Soros looking quite good here. Must be the lighting.”

Republican leaders joined Musk in condemning Biden’s decision. Nikki Haley, a GOP leader, labeled the award “another slap in the face of America,” referencing Biden’s clemency decisions and accusing him of prioritizing political agendas over national values.“Sixteen days until the inauguration. What’s next? January 20th can’t come soon enough,” Haley remarked.

Donald Trump Jr echoed the outrage, posting a viral video of a pizza delivery driver who saved five children from a burning home. “This guy deserves the Presidential Medal of Freedom, not Soros,” he tweeted, criticizing the inclusion of Soros in the list of honorees.

Soros, known for his global philanthropy and advocacy for human rights, received the award for his efforts in promoting democracy, education, and justice worldwide. The citation praised his journey from surviving Nazi-occupied Hungary to becoming a champion of open societies and social justice.

Accepting the award on behalf of his father, Alexander Soros called him “an American patriot who has spent his life fighting for freedom and human rights.”

Home Secretary Hails Jess Phillips As 'Fearless And Formidable' After Elon Musk Slams Her Over Grooming Gangs Inquiry

5 January 2025

The billionaire X owner suggested Ms Phillips "deserves to be in prison" for denying requests for the Home Office to lead a public inquiry into child sexual exploitation in Oldham.

Ms Phillips said in a letter to the local council that Oldham must follow in the footsteps of other towns such as Rotherham and Telford and commission its own inquiry into historical abuse of children.

Mr Musk also attacked Sir Keir Starmer, saying the Prime Minister failed to bring "rape gangs" to justice when he was director of public prosecutions.

"Jess Phillips has dedicated her career to tackling sexual violence and abuse and to being a voice for victims and survivors of the most terrible crimes, including child sexual abuse," she said.

"From setting up the first ever child sexual exploitation service in the Black Country and supporting survivors in Telford, Jess has been a fearless and formidable advocate for victims and survivors.

"She has worked with whistleblowers and campaigned tirelessly for justice for those badly let down by endemic institutional failure."

Russia vows response after use of US missiles by Ukraine

January 5, 2025

MOSCOW: Russia vowed on Saturday to retaliate after it accused Ukraine of firing US-supplied ATACMS missiles at the border region of Belgorod the previous day.

Outgoing US President Joe Biden authorised Kyiv to use the long-range weapons against Russia last year, in a move the Kremlin denounced as a grave escalation of the nearly three-year conflict.

“On Jan 3, an attempt was made from Ukrainian territory to launch a missile strike against the Belgorod region using US-made ATACMS operational-tactical missiles,” the Russian defence ministry said. “These actions by the Kyiv regime, which is supported by Western curators, will be met with retaliation,” it added, saying all the missiles were shot down. The ministry said earlier that air defences downed eight ATACMS missiles in total, without saying when or where.

At least three people, including two children, were wounded in a Russian attack on the Sumy region of northeastern Ukraine on Saturday, local authorities said. Sumy region borders Russia’s Kursk region and has been regularly shelled by Russian forces for months.

“Russians dropped a bomb on a residential building. Two children and one adult were injured. One entrance of the apartment building was destroyed,” Sumy military administration said on the Telegram messenger. Moreover, Russian strike on a village in Ukraine’s northeast Kharkiv region killed a 74-year-old man, regional governor Oleg Synegubov said.
