India Hails Afghanistan's Move To Restore Property
Rights Of Hindus, Sikhs
Photo:
The Times of India
-----
Apr 13, 2024
NEW DELHI: India welcomed the Taliban regime's recent
move to restore property rights to Afghan Hindus and Sikhs calling it a
positive development.
The Taliban regime has reportedly set up a commission
to ensure return to owners the rights of private land which were seized by
warlords during the tenure of the previous dispensation in Kabul.
"We have seen reports on this issue. If the
Taliban administration has decided to restore property rights to their citizens
belonging to Afghan Hindu and Sikh community, we see this as a positive
development," said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. He was responding to
a question at a media briefing.
Taliban authorities were reported to be working to
restore private land to Hindu and Sikh minorities, reclaiming these properties
from those linked to the previous West-backed regime. The Taliban initiative is
seen as a significant step toward redressing the injustices faced by religious
minorities in the country, who have long been displaced and marginalised,
according to Taliban authorities.

Authorities In Xinjiang Continue To Stifle Ramadan
traditions, Secularise Islam

Apr 12, 2024
Muslims around the world celebrated Eid-al-Fitr this
week, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The month is normally
observed through daily fasting, prayer, and community service, but in Xinjiang,
many of these traditions were stifled by authorities, as was the case in
previous years. Accounts from various parts of the region reveal the CCP’s
increasingly successful efforts to secularize Islam while rendering Uyghur
Muslims into caricatures for external propaganda.
David Rennie, author of The Economist’s Chaguan
column, spent the final days of Ramadan in Xinjiang, where he observed,
“Several times ordinary Uyghurs signalled that this has been a distressing
Ramadan, during which it was risky to be caught fasting.” In Urumqi, he
described several tense encounters with locals who indicated that practices
related to fasting had been banned:

How Saudi Arabia Is Promoting Healthy Diets And
Sustainability With Plant-Based Alternatives
In such a meat-heavy
culture, it is difficult to imagine Saudis embracing more plant-based
alternatives. But as the world edges closer to global warming, companies around
the world, such as Saudi-based Ayla’s Choice, have to think beyond imagination.

April 12, 2024
RIYADH: Just a few short years ago, visitors to Saudi
Arabia could never have imagined feasting on a plate of vegan tuna nigiri or a
meatless shawarma. Thanks to new investments in agritech, these plant-based
alternatives are now firmly on the menu.
With the movement towards meatless eating gaining
momentum in response to mounting environmental and health concerns, the
Kingdom’s public and private sectors are working together with a view to
produce food more sustainably.
“Taking actions towards plant-based products is
essential for promoting environmental sustainability,” Faisal Al-Sughayer,
co-founder and general manager of Saudi plant-based brand Ayla’s Choice, told
Arab News.
“By making conscious choices to incorporate more
plant-based options into our diets and lifestyles, we can contribute to a
positive change and create a healthier, more sustainable society.”
Since the launch of the Saudi Green Initiative in
March 2021, the Kingdom has witnessed significant changes owing to its
commitment to enhance food security, the promotion of sustainable agriculture,
and adaptation to evolving food trends.
Mindful of vulnerabilities in the global supply chain,
the Kingdom’s investment in food industry innovation and diversification is
also designed to achieve a degree of self-sufficiency in meeting the dietary
needs of the population.
About a year ago, the Saudi Ministry of Environment,
Water and Agriculture signed deals with the Cooperative Societies Council,
Saudi Greenhouses Management and Agricultural Marketing Co., and Ayla’s Choice
to develop plant-based foods.
With these agreements, the ministry aims to promote a
culture of healthy eating, provide locally made, high-quality vegan and
vegetarian alternatives, and to utilize advanced technologies for producing
meat and dairy substitutes.
These deals will also help modernize farming and
marketing systems, promote food security, enhance environmental sustainability,
and contribute to the overall development of the Kingdom’s agricultural sector.
The company’s goal is not to promote a completely
meatless and dairy-free diet, but rather to provide consumers with healthy
alternatives to animal products.
At one of its recent workshops in collaboration with
MEWA, the company showcased innovative products, including truffle and olive
caviar, carrot-based smoked salmon tartlet, tomato tuna nigiri, and eggplant
unaginigiri.
In doing so, the firm aims “to provide expertise and
input from our sites from the plant-based sector, and from the agricultural
sector to enhance food security in Saudi,” he added.
As of now, collaborations are in the works with MEWA,
the Ministry of Economy and Planning, and individual companies to embark on
joint ventures that will ensure the availability of the highest-quality meat-
and dairy-free foods.
Saudi Greenhouses Management and Agri Marketing Co. —
also known as Al-Rasheed Greenhouses — is one of the largest farming and
horticulture companies in the Gulf Cooperation Council area, with more than 40
years’ experience in the sector.
The firm operates in nine locations, managing more
than 90 hectares of greenhouses and an additional 27 hectares of new expansions
in high-tech greenhouses throughout the Kingdom. It is the biggest supplier of
fresh produce to Saudi Arabia’s main retailers
“The company has full control on the whole supply
chain of the fresh produce, starting from designing the right greenhouse
specification for the right region to grow in the Kingdom, to delivering the
fresh produce on the shelves for consumers,” Abdullah Al-Rasheed, the firm’s
senior project manager, told Arab News
Al-Rasheed Greenhouses recently signed a deal to
cultivate and supply plant-based ingredients to Ayla’s Choice for use in its
products, such as lion’s mane mushrooms, which are a meat-free alternative to
steaks.
Al-Sughayer hopes the partnership will encourage local
farmers in Saudi Arabia to consider tailoring their choice of crops to meet the
growing demand of the plant-based foods industry, generating a better return on
their produce and reducing waste in the process.
“This can have significant benefits for both the
farmers and food security in Saudi,” he said. “Our aim is to diversify food
sources by working with local farmers to develop plant-based products from the
overabundance of local produce.”
Saudi Arabia’s food sector has made great strides in
sustainability. Last year, one of the Kingdom’s most highly-anticipated
gigaprojects, the NEOM smart city, announced a new collaboration with a Dutch
greenhouse company to build a self-sustaining horticultural oasis.
Using revolutionary technologies, the partnership with
Van Der Hoeven will allow the region’s desert landscape, scorched by high
temperatures and parched by low rainfall, to flourish with locally grown
produce.
Using soilless farming technology and monitoring
systems managed by artificial intelligence, the company has enabled local
supermarkets to grow crops in the middle of the store with absolute control
over the quality and growing process.
“The first one is a world record for lowest CO2
emissions. This is measured per kilogram of lettuce produced,” measured against
the environmental impact of transporting food across the planet and its
concurrent waste.
The technology has also achieved the lowest rate of
energy consumption and the highest production efficiency. More importantly for
Saudi Arabia, however, is that the technology scored highest for water
conservation, requiring just 1.3 liters per kilogram of greens.

Pakistan Not Added To List Of ‘Dangerous Nations’, Say
UK Officials
Atika Rehman
April 13, 2024
LONDON: British High Commission officials have denied
media reports claiming that the UK government had added Pakistan to the list of
dangerous countries.
In a recent update, the Foreign and Commonwealth
Development Office (FCDO) has added eight additional destinations, including
Israel and Gaza, to the list of places deemed ‘too dangerous’ for UK citizens
to visit.
Indian media reports, as well as some local websites,
had wrongly reported that Pakistan was “off limits” for travel according to a
UK government advisory. But officials told Dawn there was no change in
Pakistan’s travel advisory status which was last updated on January 24, as per
the UK government’s website.
Several reports mentioned a ‘black list’ and ‘red
list’, misstating that Pakistan was included in the latter, but officials
confirmed to Dawn that there were no black or red lists and that each country
has its own travel advice.
The UK’s FCDO has similar travel advisories for both
India and Pakistan. “FCDO advises against all travel to within 10 miles of the
border between Pakistan and Afghanistan” and “the Line of Control,” says the
advisory for Pakistan.
The warning for India is identical to Pakistan, and UK
citizens are warned against travelling to Manipur and parts of India-held
Kashmir.
The advisory for Pakistan also warns against
travelling to KP and Balochistan areas, including Bajaur, Bannu, Buner,
Charsadda, D.I. Khan, Khyber, Kohat, Kurram, LakkiMarwat, Lower Dir, Mohmand,
Orakzai, Peshawar, Swat, Tank, North Waziristan, South Waziristan and Gwadar.
The eight countries declared ‘too dangerous’ to travel
for UK citizens are Ukraine, Iran, Sudan, Lebanon, Israel, Belarus, and the
Palestinian territories.
With conflicts and tensions escalating in several
areas, the FCDO has urged British nationals to avoid non-essential travel to
these destinations for their own safety.
The FCDO regularly issues travel advice for its
citizens to consider before making travel plans to other countries.

Why a voter list from 1997 remains a bureaucratic
nightmare for Assam’s Bengali Muslims
Rokibuz Zaman
13-04-2024
Two years ago, a 55-year-old woman from Assam’s
Barpeta district, home to a large community of Bengali-origin Muslims, ran into
an unlikely hurdle in registering a plot of land in her name.
“In the 1997 electoral roll, only my husband’s first
name was recorded,” the Muslim woman told Scroll. “And my father’s nickname was
recorded in the roll, and not his official name.”
For several women from rural Assam who do not own land
or have dropped out of school, their links to their fathers and husband are an
important proof of identity – and citizenship.
Though the errors were rectified in subsequent
electoral rolls, the land revenue officers turned down her request for a
no-objection certificate.
The answer lies in Assam’s long history of
bureaucratic exercises carried out to detect foreigners – and specifically in
the revision of electoral rolls in 1997.
In 1997, the Election Commission of India, carried out
what it described as an “intensive revision” of the list of Assam’s voters
electoral rolls. This was a response, it said, to “apprehensions expressed from
various quarters that the electoral rolls were infested with the names of
foreigners/illegal migrants”.

Will Sanatan heat singe atheist A Raja?
Apr 13, 2024
Nestling at the juncture of Western and Eastern Ghats
and perched at a height of 1,000 to 2,500 metres above mean sea level, the
Nilgiris, or Blue Mountains, provide a breathtakingbackdrop for a spirited poll
battle. Tea and coffee plantations drape the slopes of the mountain range with
tea farmers and workers constituting 40% of the constituency’s voters. Here,
electoral politics and contests centre around tourism and tea.
Battling it out are two high-profile candidates— DMK’s
A Raja and BJP’s L Murugan. Raja, a native of Perambalur district, is the
sitting MP from Nilgiris. He won during the 2009 general polls but lost in 2014
when his image and prospects were battered by the 2G scam that continued to
rage then.
A first-time Lok Sabha contestant, junior Union
minister Murugan, a native of Namakkal district in the influential Kongu belt
of western Tamil Nadu, was announced BJP’s candidate for Nilgiris weeks after
he was nominated to Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh.
Tea and coffee estates, the prime industry in the hill
district, comprise three of the six assembly constituencies in
Nilgiris—Udhagamandalam, Gudalur and Coonoor, with a voting population of 5.7
lakh.

A battle to save Ladakh, and all of humanity
April 12, 2024
JANAKI MURALI
When Ramon Magsaysay award winner (2018) and climate
activist Sonam Wangchuk addressed a 30,000-strong crowd at Leh, Ladakh on March
6, 2024 to announce his 21-day climate fast, he was not just speaking to the
people of Ladakh but also making an appeal to the world.
Tucked away between India’s neighbours, Pakistan and
China, at a height of 11,500 feet, Ladakh comprises 97% indigenous tribes, many
of whom lead simple pastoral lives and depend on farming and animal rearing for
a livelihood. Apart from border disputes, the Himalayan region also faces the
damaging effects of climate change through floods, drought, landslides,
greenhouse gases, and other pollutants.

UAPA Tribunal upholds ban against Shabir Shah-led
JKDFP
GK WEB DESK
April 13, 2024
Srinagar, April 13: A tribunal has upheld the decision
of the Union government to declare the Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom
Party (JKDFP), founded by Shabir Ahmad Shah, an ‘unlawful association’ under
the anti-terror Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), a media report
said.
The UAPA tribunal’s order quoted a chargesheet filed
by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2019 which stated that, in 2016,
the “Pakistan Government” had sent ₹1.1 crore to Shah to be distributed among
the people who attacked security forces with stones after Hizbul Mujahideen
commander Burhan Wani was killed in an encounter, reported The Hindu.
The NIA, as per the report, said that the money sent
from Pakistan clearly showed that Shah, along with others, “is at the centre of
the conspiracy to promote lawlessness and violence in Jammu and Kashmir orchestrated
with an intention to secure secession of J&K from the Union of India.”

The open house tradition has become a norm in the
Sultanate, to which imams urged Muslims not to make it compulsory as it could
become a burden to host it during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
Imams added that Islam has outlined etiquette and
rules when visiting, such as giving Salam and seeking permission before
entering the host’s house; and knocking on the door or ringing the door bell
just enough to be heard by the host or occupants of the house.
“One should also introduce oneself before entering and

Bangladesh: Criminalisation Of Activists And Crackdown
On Protests Continue Following One-Sided Elections
13-04-2024
In December 2023, the CIVICUS Monitor downgraded
Bangladesh’s civic space to ‘closed’, its worst rating. The downgrade is the
result of a massive government crackdown on opposition politicians and
independent critics in the run-up to national elections.
Over the year, the authorities targeted human rights
defenders, protesters and other critics, using intimidation, violence, arrest
and torture. Authorities also targeted journalists exposing state abuses and
shut down critical media outlets. A new Cyber Security Act, rather than freeing
online expression, retained most of the repressive language of the previous
draconian Digital Security Act used to criminalise thousands of online critics.
As documented by Human Rights Watch, the authorities
tightened repression ahead of national elections. Security forces carried out
mass arrests of opposition members and in some cases responded to protests with
excessive force. The arrests were to ensure convictions of opposition members
so they would be disqualified from contesting the elections.
With the opposition boycotting the elections – due to
the government’s refusal to allow a neutral caretaker administration to oversee
the elections – Sheikh Hasina secured her fifth term as Bangladeshi prime
minister. Hasina’s Awami League (AL) won 222 seats while independent candidates
secured a total of 63 seats. The Jatiya Party managed to secure just 11 of the
300 parliamentary seats.

How did a flight from Israel land in Dhaka?
Chowdhury Akbor Hossain
12 Apr 2024
In a rare feat, a flight from Tel Aviv in Israel
landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka on Thursday,
on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr, though the two countries have no diplomatic
relations.
The flight touched down at 7:55pm, raising the
eyebrows of the aviation experts, who were keeping an eye on the flight before
the landing.
Bangladesh still does not recognize Israel and is
among 28 countries under the UN to do so. In 1972, Israel offered official
recognition to the newly-founded Bangladesh — a move Dhaka rejected right away.

Pakistan
Investigations ordered into Bahawalnagar ‘stand-off’
Ejaz Chaudhry
April 13, 2024
BAHAWALNAGAR / LAHORE: The Punjab government and
Pakistan Army on Friday pledged transparent investigations into a “face-off” between
police and army personnel following the arrest of a serving officer, which took
the social media by storm over the Eid holidays.
Four personnel of Madressah police, including the
station house officer, have been booked and arrested on charges of keeping a
man and his two sons, including an army official, in illegal detention,
dereliction of duty and misuse of authority.
Another policeman, the Maroot police SHO, has been
suspended and a departmental inquiry has been initiated against him for airing
“misinformation” regarding the matter on social media.
The FIR lodged on the complaint of inspector Saifullah
Hanif with Madressah police on April 10 said that former SI/SHO Rizwan Abbas,
ASI Mohammad Naeem, constables Mohammad Abbas and Ali Raza arrested Mohammad
Khalil and Mohammad Idrees and their father Mohammad Anwar, who were nominated
in an FIR registered on April 8.
Instead of presenting them before a magistrate, the
accused policemen kept them detained at the police station for more than 24
hours.
According to police sources, ASI Naeem and SHO Rizwan
Abbas raided the house of Mohammad Anwar, a resident of Chak Sarkari, on April
7 for the arrest of his son Rafaqat over possession of an unlicensed pistol.

Justice Afridi won’t hear suomotu on ‘meddling’
Nasir Iqbal
April 13, 2024
ISLAMABAD: Justice Yahya Afridi has recused himself
from a case pertaining to alleged meddling by the country’s security apparatus
into judicial affairs, arguing that inaction on the part of the chief justice
or judges of the Islamabad High Court should not lead the Supreme Court to
impose the exercise of its jurisdiction under Article 184(3) of the
Constitution.
“This may affect the functioning of the worthy chief
justice and judges in their discharge of judicial functions, and would to my
mind amount to interference in the independence of high courts,” said a note
issued by Justice Afridi.
The note came after a seven-judge bench — led by Chief
Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa and comprising Justices Syed Mansoor Ali
Shah, Yahya Afridi, Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Athar Minallah, Musarrat Hilali and
Naeem Akhtar Afghan — had on April 3 conducted the hearing initiated after six
judges of the IHC wrote a letter to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) accusing
the intelligence agencies of interfering in judicial affairs.
“To proceed on the proposed action of suomotu would
negate the lessons moved into action by public sentiments no matter how
pressing the issue may appear,” Justice Afridi emphasised, adding that one must
also not ignore that the high courts under the Constitution were independent
establishments envisaged to regulate not only their administrative functions,
but also provide security to and safeguard the judicial officers in the
discharge of their judicial functions.
“In the instant matter, none can doubt the bona fide
of invoking suomotu jurisdiction under Article 184(3) of the Constitution, but
when the letter of six worthy IHC judges craves for formulating the administrative
course of conduct for serving judges to not only address any intrusion of the
executive in their judicial functions, their mode and manner of interaction
with the executive, to judicially proceed in the present proceedings would
surely lead to an adverse spectacle — a sight should be avoided,” the note
said.
It added: “None can dispute that the anxiety of six
IHC judges’ March 25 letter most certainly warrants positive consideration, for
inserting appropriate provisions to regulate the interaction of judges with the
executive and the remedial response of the judiciary to any attempt or actual
interference in its judicial functions in the Code of Conduct of judges of the
superior judiciary, as provided under Article 209(8) of the Constitution.”
On the other hand, Justice Athar Minallah, also a
member of the seven-judge SC bench, regretted that no one has ever been held
accountable for such an interference which has created impunity for the worst
form of mutilation of independence of judiciary.
In his note, the judge said the public trust in the
judicial system was eroded when the court’s suomotu arisen from high court
judges’ letter suggests normalisation of the culture of deviancy.
“The onus is on the federal government to establish
before the Supreme Court and to assist in resolving the questions raised,”
Justice Minallah said, adding that instances mentioned by the high court judges
in their letter were serious and their implications in the context of the
independence of judiciary were grave.

Minister for Finance Mohammad Aurangzeb on Friday called on Prime Minister
Shehbaz Sharif and briefed him about his upcoming visit to the United States.
The finance minister discussed with the prime minister
his scheduled meetings with the IMF, World Bank and other institutions, the
Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
Finance Minister Aurangzeb is due in Washington on
Sunday (tomorrow) with a team of experts to attend the IMF and World Bank’s
spring meetings and initiate talks on a new package of around $6 billion to $8
billion.
The main ministerial meetings and events will take
place April 17-19 with other events and activities taking place during the
week, April 15-20.
Mr Aurangzeb and his team’s schedule includes
bilateral meetings with the heads of the IMF and the World Bank, as well as
other senior officials of various international financial institutions. They
will also hold bilateral meetings with the finance ministers of China, Saudi Arabia,
UAE, Turkiye, and other friendly nations attending this annual event.
They will also represent Pakistan at multilateral
meetings and are expected to hold bilateral meetings with US officials, as the
meetings are held in Washington.
Meanwhile, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva
said on Thursday that Pakistan still needs to solve some “very important
issues” while acknowledging that the country is seeking a new loan arrangement
from the lender.
This marks her first public acknowledgement that Pakistan
is contemplating a potential follow-up programme with the Fund after completing
its current $3bn stand-by arrangement (SBA) later this month.
The prime minister has already said in many of his
speeches in the recent past that the government have no option but to make
another deal with IMF to seek a loan to stable the crippling economy of
Pakistan. The agreement is likely to be inked by the end of the current
calendar year. Last month, the finance minister expressed hope for reaching a
staff-level agreement (SLA) with the IMF by the end of the fiscal year (June
30).

General Omar Ayub Khan announced a countrywide movement for the rule of law by
a coalition of six opposition parties, under the banner of Tehreek

PTI turned down PPP offer to form coalition, says Rana
Sanaullah
April 13, 2024
TOBA TEK SINGH: The party that joined the PML-N in
forming the incumbent coalition government had first approached the PTI, but
were turned down, PML-N stalwart Rana Sanaullah said.
In an interaction with journalists on Eid day, the
former interior minister said that the PTI could have formed a coalition
government after the elections, if they wanted to.
“If the PML-N did not form a government, what would
have happened? No one else was ready to do so. The PTI, which was in second
place with 92 members, was not ready to talk to anyone. If they were ready to
talk, PPP was ready to form a government with them,” he claimed.
Referring to the PTI, he said that if a political
party adopts a stance that they did not want to talk to or work with other
parties, then the country would definitely fall prey to anarchy.
Mr Sanaullah claimed that even within the party, one man
— ostensibly a reference to Imran Khan — did not allow difference of opinion to
thrive, while others leaders were perhaps “amenable to working alongside other
political forces”.

Iran Could Attack Israel Within 24 Hours, US Rushes
Warships To Aid Ally
April 13, 2024
New Delhi: Israel is bracing for a direct attack by
Iran as warnings grow of retaliation for the killing last week of a senior
officer in Iran's embassy in Damascus. US and other intelligence assessments
have said the retaliation could come as soon as Sunday. The unprecedented
attack could trigger an all-out regional war.
US President Joe Biden has also warned Israel that he
expects a strike from Iran soon, but has warned the clerical state not to
attack.
An assault from Iranian soil has emerged as one of the
main scenarios expected by the Jewish state and its allies, according to
reports by the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg. A bombardment with drones and
precision missiles could come within the next 24 hours, the reports said citing
people familiar with the matter.
Any Iranian attack on Israel would likely be a
combination of missiles and drones, based on current capabilities outlined in a
new Defense Intelligence Agency Worldwide Threat assessment released late
Thursday.

Israel on edge for Iranian retaliation after embassy
strike
By James Mackenzie
April 13, 2024
JERUSALEM, April 12 (Reuters) - Israel on Friday
braced for an attack by Iran or its proxies as warnings grew of retaliation for
the killing last week of a senior officer in Iran's embassy in Damascus.
Countries including India, France, Poland and Russia
have warned their citizens against travel to the region, already on edge over
the war in Gaza, now in its seventh month. White House National Security
Council spokesman John Kirby said the threat from Iran was real and viable.
"Over the past day, the military has conducted a situational
assessment and approved plans for a range of scenarios following reports and
statements on an Iranian attack," chief military spokesman Daniel Hagari
said in a televised statement on Friday.
Israel's foreign ministry did not comment on reports that
some Israeli diplomatic missions had been partially evacuated and security
stepped up.
"The revenge will come," wrote Israel's
largest daily newspaper, YediothAhronoth. "For the moment, the premise is
that it will be very soon, in the next few days."
Israel did not claim responsibility for the airstrike
on April 1 that killed Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior
commander in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' overseas Quds Force, and
six other officers as they attended a meeting in the Damascus embassy compound.

Bulwell mosque: Locals told they have 'absolutely no

13 APR 2024
A group of Bulwell residents packed into a room at the
Riverside Centre on Friday, April 12, to discuss their efforts to halt the
proposed building of a mosque in the town. Around 30 people attended the
75-minute meeting to speak their thoughts on the likelihood that the place of

An application was submitted to Nottingham City
Council in January for the building of the mosque, on vacant land behind
Cinderhill Road. But the plan has caused outcry among some locals, with one at
the meeting saying she "feels racist" for her opposition to the
proposal.
She said: "I think we're known as the local

I don't want a mosque. But I just feel we're being driven out. Our area of
