Imam Qari Asim Dismissed As United Kingdom’s
Islamophobia Adviser After Backing Calls To Cancel 'Blasphemous' Film, The Lady
of Heaven

11 June 2022
An imam who endorsed a campaign for cinemas to cancel
a "blasphemous" film about the Prophet Mohammed's daughter has been
dismissed as the Government's anti-Islamophobia adviser.
Qari Asim was told on Saturday evening that he had
been dismissed from his official roles as independent adviser on Islamophobia
and deputy chairman of the Anti-Muslim Hatred Working Group.
The move came after Mr Asim, the head imam at the
Makkah mosque in Leeds, backed those protesting against The Lady of Heaven film
and asked cinemas to drop the £12 million production, which has become the
centre of a free speech row in the UK.
Amid widespread protests, Mr Asim issued a statement
branding The Lady of Heaven a "disparaging movie" that has
"caused much pain and hurt to Muslims".
In a letter to Mr Asim published on the Government
website on Saturday, the Department of Levelling Up said: "We have no
option but to withdraw the appointment and end your roles with Government with
immediate effect.
"Your recent support for a campaign to limit free
expression - a campaign which has itself encouraged communal tensions - means
it is no longer appropriate for you to continue your work with Government in
roles designed to promote community harmony," it said.
The letter went on: "You will have no doubt seen
reports of the scenes outside different cinema venues. These included deeply
disturbing videos of sectarian chanting and anti-Shia hatred... which must be
challenged at every opportunity as part of a wider effort to combat anti-Muslim
hatred.
Mr Asim's statement clashed with the views of Dame
Sara Khan, the Government’s independent adviser on social cohesion and
resilience, who criticised the failure of the authorities to stand up to
protests which led to Cineworld pulling UK screenings of the film "to
ensure the safety of our staff and customers".
Mr Asim, who often represents the Muslim community
alongside other faith leaders such as the Archbishop of Canterbury and Chief
Rabbi, said: "We have been working with many brothers and imams across the
country to liaise with the cinemas.
"As a community, in some places we have been
successful and those cinemas will no longer be showing the movie, in other
places negotiations are still ongoing.
"Some imams have taken a view to protest and
others are in dialogue with the cinemas trying to resolve the situation.
Different approaches, rooted in our universal values, are necessary, as
always."
In January, Mr Asim, who was appointed as Islamophobia
adviser a day before Boris Johnson entered Downing Street in 2019, said that he
had been ignored by No 10 and Michael Gove, the Levelling Up Secretary, since
taking up the role.
The film’s release on June 3 sparked days of
demonstrations at cinemas in Bradford, Bolton, Birmingham, Sheffield, London
and Leeds, as protestors branded the film "offensive" and sectarian
in its depiction of Islam’s history and early leaders.
Malik Shlibak, executive producer of The Lady of
Heaven, blamed a radical group "trying to cause sectarian division"
for the protests and cinemas were "crumbling to the pressure".

Islamic State Allegiances in Africa: A Sub-Saharan
Breakdown
Photo: ISS Institute of
Security Studies
----
12-06-2022
The ideology of the Islamic State has taken a
significant hold in Sub-Saharan Africa. The group’s ideology has spread from
just the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria to a rapidly growing movement throughout
Africa encompassing thousands of members. The Islamic State has various
affiliates throughout Africa, including the Islamic State West Africa Province,
Islamic State Central Africa Province, Islamic State Mozambique, and others who
have pledged their allegiance to the organization.
The Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) was
first officially recognized by the Islamic State in the spring of 2019. Its
first operations occurred in Burkina Faso near the Malian border and western
Niger, and northeastern Mali. The ISGS has spread to southern Mali, and along
the border of Niger and Burkina Faso. This organization has claimed the Tongo
Tongo attack that occurred in Niger in 2017 that resulted in the death of four
American and four Nigerien soldiers. This organization is a sub-group of the
Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), after being taken over by ISWAP
in 2019. The goal of the ISGS is to establish a Salafist-Jihadi caliphate.
The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) first
pledged its allegiance to the Islamic State in 2015. While ISWAP is often
referred to as Boko Haram, the two organizations diverged from one another in
2016.
In late August 2021, ISWAP faced a significant setback
when its former leader, Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, was killed. The details
surrounding Al-Barnawi’s death remain greatly disputed; it is argued that
Nigerian troops killed him, but others attest that he was killed by a rival
organization. Despite this setback, ISWAP remains active throughout West
Africa. Its most recent attack was on June 5, 2022, at an annual festival in
Okene, Nigeria, that resulted in the death of two people.
The Islamic State Democratic Republic of the Congo
(ISIS-DRC) is active in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
This organization was first officially recognized by the Islamic State in 2018,
but it may have begun operations as early as 2017. In 2021, this group conducted attacks that
resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people in just the DRC, not including its
large-scale urban attacks in Uganda. It was formerly known as the Allied
Democratic Forces but rebranded and aligned its ideology with the Islamic
State.
Officially recognized by the Islamic State in August
2019, the Islamic State Mozambique (ISIS-Mozambique) is most widely known for
its siege of Palma in the province of Cabo Delgado in March 2021. A French company, TotalEnergies’ liquified
natural gas plant was attacked causing the project to be suspended until safety
was guaranteed. ISIS-Mozambique’s
actions, overall, have resulted in the deaths of over 1,700 civilians and the
displacement of 784,000 people from Northern Mozambique.
The Islamic State Central Africa Province (ISCAP) does
not work as a cohesive unit but rather is an overarching entity comprised of distinct
regional affiliates, such as ISIS-Mozambique and ISIS-DRC. These two
organizations are distinctly different in their attacks, goals, and actions
throughout the DRC and Mozambique and, therefore, should not be viewed as one
single group.
The ideology of the Islamic State has taken hold of
thousands throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, making the region a breeding ground
for more radicalization and attacks.
Countless organizations, countries, and private militaries have become
involved in hopes of slowing the growing threat of the Islamic State in
Sub-Saharan Africa.
Reasons behind the involvement of the Islamic State in
Sub-Saharan Africa range from economic instability to individuals identifying
with the organization’s ideology, leaving a complex and extensive range of
issues that the international community must address and mitigate. Without
proper economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa, the number of individuals
involved with the Islamic State will likely grow. It is uncertain the future of
the Islamic State in Sub-Saharan Africa, but the Islamic State’s affiliate
organizations continue to grow, and without a proper and warranted response,
this security threat will continue to increase.

First-Of-Its-Kind Initiative: Muslim-Run Gaushala To

12th June 2022
By Express News Service
HYDERABAD: In a first-of-its-kind initiative,
Telangana is set to have a gaushala (cow shelter) with around 500 cows
maintained by enthusiasts from the Muslim community. A non-governmental
organisation (NGO), Bharat First, is proposing to start Qidmate Bakar Anjuman
in Toopran of Medak district.
The initiative is aimed at sensitising the government
and the public against illegal cow slaughter and promote harmony among the
masses. Pained over the illegal transport of cows to the slaughterhouses,
Shiraj Qureshi, an advocate, started the tradition of donating cows. He says it
is illegal to slaughter cows, as per the constitution, and thus, it’s against
religious customs as well.
He adds that they consider the cow and its progeny as
Allah’s creation, who are beneficial to all humans. “The cow’s milk is healthy
for all and we don’t discriminate against it as something belonging to one
religion, because we respect all the religions and we are all Allah’s
creation,” he says, adding that they have taken the legal route to prevent the
illegal cow slaughtering. Khaiser Ansari, in-charge at Bharat First, says the
gaushala construction has already begun and would be opened shortly.

Researchers Uncover Evidence Of Early Muslim Burial In
Syria
Main building of Uppsala University

-----
By Jerusalem Post Staff
JUNE 12, 2022
Swedish researchers uncovered evidence of one of the
earliest Islamic burials ever, according to a new peer-reviewed study published
in Communications Biology journal on Tuesday.
The researchers, including evolutionary biologist
Megha Srigyan and population geneticist Torsten Günther from Uppsala
University, analyzed the remains of a woman and a man found in Syria.
In 2009 and 2010, Spanish and French researchers,
along with Syrian archaeology students, found multiple burial sites in Tell
Qarassa, Syria. In order to study the earliest farming groups in the area, they
conducted DNA analyses on the remains of 14 people found at the sites,
according to lead researcher Cristina Valdiosera, an archaeogeneticist at the
University of Burgos, Spain.
"With the goal of studying the first farming
groups in the region, we subjected the remains of 14 humans to ancient DNA
analysis," she said. "Only two individuals from upper layers of the
site contained sufficient amounts of endogenous DNA and these came from graves
that we assumed belonged to a later prehistoric period. After radiocarbon
dating it became clear we had something unexpected and special."
After it was determined using radiocarbon dating that
the burial sites were from the time of the Umayyad caliphates during the late
7th and early 8th centuries, the Swedish researchers determined from the style
of burial that it was consistent with early Islamic burial traditions.
"The genomic results were also surprising as the
two individuals seemed genetically different from most ancient or modern-day
Levantines," said Srigyan, who conducted the data analysis. "The most
similar – though not identical – modern-day groups were Bedouins and Saudis,
suggesting a possible connection to the Arabian Peninsula," she added.
"Most of our evidence is indirect but the
different types of data, taken together, point to this man and woman belonging
to transient groups far from home, suggesting the presence of early Muslims in
the Syrian countryside," said Günther, who co-coordinated the Swedish
study.

Resistance only way to counter US pressures: Leader
