Rising Hindu Nationalism Leaves Muslims Fearful In India’s Holy City Of Varanasi
May 1, 2024

-----------
The sun glistens on the Ganges as Hindu devotees bathe in the holy river’s waters, and the Muslim call to prayer reverberates through the dusty air. Varanasi, an ancient city of temples and gods, is India’s spiritual capital. And here, in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s political stronghold, tensions between the two faiths are escalating.
When Modi chose this holy city as his constituency a decade ago, it was the perfect setting for him to meld his party’s political and religious ambitions. Having risen to power on a promise of development and anti-corruption, his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) now stands accused of turning India – a nation constitutionally bound to secularism – into a Hindu rashtra, or homeland.
As Sana Sabah celebrated the Muslim festival of Eid with her family in Varanasi, she raised these fears with trepidation in her voice.
“It’s scary that someone like Modi … is not only celebrated but validated,” the 33-year-old entrepreneur said. The Hindu-nationalist right wing, she said, “is not even trying to hide it anymore. And it’s troublesome.”
With voting now underway in the world’s most populous nation, a significant portion of its more than 200 million strong Muslim population express fear at the prospect of Modi’s re-election. Vying for a rare third term in power, he is defending his seat in the traffic-clogged, diverse city of some 1.7 million people.
Yet, 10 years after his ascension, many of Varanasi’s Muslims feel neglected, even betrayed, especially now as a centuries old-mosque becomes the latest flashpoint in a case that tests India’s secular fabric.
Local Muslim leader Syed Mohammad Yaseen, 78, feels the government is failing to protect his community, which he says is feeling increasingly vulnerable and fearful of hate crimes in today’s India.
“The worst will happen (if Modi gets reelected),” he said from his office in Varanasi. “We are tolerating these things, maybe one day there can be change. But we are hopeless.”
‘We hide our names’
Modi’s BJP has its roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing paramilitary organization that advocates Hindu supremacy within India – though the party has repeatedly said it does not discriminate against minorities.
“There is not one welfare scheme where religion, or community, is used as a base to discriminate,” said BJP Varanasi leader Dileep Patel, referring to the government’s welfare programs. “The prime minister’s schemes (programs) apply to our Muslim brothers, Hindu brothers, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Parsis, who have, without any discrimination, benefited from Modi.”
There is no doubt that Modi’s decade in power has been transformative. India has arrived on the world stage, inching ever closer to global-power status, boasting the fastest-growing major economy, and making great strides in technology and space.
But there is also no doubt that religious polarization has increased.
Hindu nationalists have been appointed to top positions in key government institutions, giving them the power to make sweeping changes to legislation that rights groups say unfairly target Muslims. Textbooks have been rewritten to downplay the history of India’s ancient Islamic rulers, cities and streets with Mughal-era names renamed and Muslim properties have been demolished by authorities for illegal encroachment on government land and as punishment for alleged rioting.
In 2019, Modi removed the special autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir – India’s only Muslim-majority state – bringing it under the direct control of New Delhi. That same year, his administration passed a controversial citizenship law that excludes Muslim migrants, giving rise to deadly riots.
Nasir Ali recalls the evening, weeks after the law’s enactment, when right-wing Hindu mobs gathered near his home in New Delhi, chanting anti-Islam slogans, attacking property and harassing residents. He was bringing his sister home from a hospital in a taxi. He felt safe, he said, because “this was the capital, Delhi, and it was daytime.”
But as his taxi approached the streets, Ali saw the mob. “Among them, there was a man who took out his pistol and fired at me. He started chanting ‘Jai Shree Sri Ram’ (a Hindu religious slogan) and ran away,” says Ali.
Ali says he believes he was shot because of his Muslim faith, and said it was a neighbor who pulled the trigger.
He attempted to file a police complaint at his local station against the alleged perpetrators, a 2021 Delhi court order seen by CNN shows. But the police did not register his complaint, nor properly investigate, the court order said.
The local Bhajanpura Police have since disputed those findings, and the case is winding its way through the legal system, with the next hearing expected in September, according to Ali’s lawyer. CNN has contacted Bhajanpura Police for comment.
The riots were described as some of the worst sectarian violence in decades, leaving dozens, mostly Muslims, dead. Delhi police made about 800 arrests, according to a report shared by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Ali, who was blinded in one eye, now says he is wary of letting his fellow citizens know he is Muslim. “We do not let anyone realize (our religion),” he said. “We hide our names as well.”
Moments of large-scale violence like those Delhi riots often make national or international headlines. But it is the day-to-day incidents which spring up all over India that many say characterizes the way life has changed for so many of India’s Muslims under Modi.
When Usman, 28, moved from Kashmir to northwestern Rajasthan state for work in 2021, he said he struggled to find a home for weeks, visiting broker after broker in the city of Jaipur, who looked at his name and had one remark: “This is going to be a problem.”
“It’s a given, a Muslim will face a struggle finding an apartment,” said Usman, who asked CNN to use only his first name, citing privacy concerns. “Things were bad before. Now, it’s become worse.”
CNN has verified dozens of social media videos that paint a stark picture of religious divisions.
In one from March this year, a policeman can be seen kicking Muslims offering prayers on the side of the road in New Delhi. In another from the western state of Gujarat last year, right-wing groups projected “Jai Shree Ram” on the walls of a mosque. In an incident that shocked the nation in August, a railway police officer opened fire on a moving train, killing three Muslim passengers and a Hindu constable, while allegedly advocating for Modi’s leadership.
Anti-Muslim speech has also risen dramatically, a recent report by the Washington-based research group India Hate Lab showed, which documented 668 such cases in 2023.
BJP politician T. Raja Singh openly called for violence against Muslims in an October speech in Rajasthan, proclaiming: “If they (Muslims) take one Hindu girl, we’ll take 10 of theirs.” At another event, he allegedly said: “You (Muslims) are half cut (circumcised), we will cut you fully.”
India prohibits hate speech under several sections of its penal code, including a section that criminalizes “deliberate and malicious acts” intended to insult religious beliefs. Singh is facing a slew of police investigations, including for his alleged hate speeches, but in October last year he was fielded as a BJP candidate in state elections – winning his seat for the third time in a row.
Analysts say the lack of repercussions for vitriolic comments has given extremists tacit support, making them even more brazen. Many Muslims fear this rise poses a danger to their communities – and worry it may only get worse as India votes in this election.
Multiple human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and the International Federation for Human Rights have warned of continued discrimination against religious minorities, particularly Muslims, over the past decade, and have repeatedly called on authorities to end it.
BJP National Spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill has said his party is not prejudiced against Muslims, and the community has benefited from Modi’s leadership. “India’s constitution protects the Indian democracy. No political party in country is strong enough to bulldoze the Constitution, to bulldoze the will of the people,” he said.
Yet, critics have pointed to the lack of representation within the BJP. Despite being a party that claims to represent all Indians it doesn’t have a single Muslim lawmaker.
This week, Modi himself sparked a row over hate speech while campaigning in Rajasthan, a BJP ruled-state, when he accused Muslims – who have been present in India for centuries – of being “infiltrators,” and echoing a false conspiracy voiced by some Hindu nationalists that Muslims are displacing the country’s Hindu population by deliberately having large families.
The speech caused widespread anger among Muslims leaders and opposition politicians as well as calls for election authorities to investigate the comments. BJP party spokespeople subsequently said Modi was talking about undocumented migrants.
Reclaiming mosques
Shamsher Ali, a shopkeeper in Varanasi, fears for his two young daughters growing up in an increasingly polarized India. Ali looks back at his childhood – a time when, he says, Muslim-Hindu camaraderie was the norm.
Muslims haven’t felt this level of fear in years, Ali says.
“So much hate has been sown that people now look at each other with suspicion … the tensions have become so bad that a Hindu and a Muslim can’t even see eye to eye,” the 45-year-old said. “This government is relying on driving a wedge between the two communities.”
Meters from Ali’s shop, the Gyanvapi Mosque has become the latest battleground between Hindu nationalists and Varanasi’s Muslims.
The mosque was built in the 17th century by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. It is widely believed a temple devoted to Lord Shiva on the same site was destroyed to make way for it. A different Hindu temple was subsequently built nearby in 1780 and for centuries, Hindus and Muslims prayed at their respective sites side by side, the temple’s gold stripes standing alongside the mosque’s white domes.
“Muslim women would wear their niqab (Muslim traditional dress) and Muslim men with their skullcaps would frequent the Ghats nearby (a holy Hindu area),” Ali recalled.
But now, the Gyanvapi Mosque sits at the apex of a wider legal campaign to reclaim places of worship, and Hindu nationalists are demanding it back. Its fate is being debated across courtrooms in India, in a case that will have ramifications nationwide.
In May 2022, a court survey claimed to find an artifact that resembled a Hindu relic inside the building. Muslims question the conclusion of the survey, saying it runs counter to their own findings.
In January, a Varanasi court ruled that Hindus could offer prayer in the basement of the mosque.
“Today, the police is against us. I don’t have faith in the judiciary,” said Yaseen, the local Muslim leader, from his office filled with documents related to the case. “They are giving judgment, but not justice.”
Outside the temple gates, guards patrol the area. Monkeys scale the walls of the complex, unconcerned by the high security and barbed-wire fence that fortifies the mosque. On the streets, vendors sell marigold flowers, and saffron flags fly high on shops and buildings.
The incident has echoes of another major flashpoint – the 16th century Babri mosque in Ayodhya. It was demolished by Hindu hardliners in a 1992 attack, sparking deadly riots, in an incident that helped turbocharge the BJP from a fringe party to a major player.
Earlier this year, Modi inaugurated a vast Hindu temple on the site, the culmination of a decades-long campaign and an event seen as a seminal moment by India’s leader – one, critics say, pulled the country away from its constitutionally secular foundations.
“(Today) is the beginning of a new time cycle,” Modi said at the new temple. “After centuries of waiting, our Ram has arrived.”
‘Unique fabric threatened’
Dressed in a saffron robe with religious beads draped around his neck, Hindu priest Swami Jitendranand Saraswati doesn’t think fears harbored by Muslims are substantiated.
“If they are saying they feel like they are second-class citizens, then this makes me happy,” he said with a smile, as worshippers touched his feet while bringing offerings to his small temple.
He believes Gyanvapi is not a mosque, but a Hindu temple, and wants to see his community worship inside the walls of the building. Swami Saraswati also wants his community to reclaim some 3,000 more Hindu places of worship allegedly destroyed by Mughals centuries ago.
“The Hindu community wants its lost self-respect back. The Hindu community wants its places of worship back,” he said.
Amit Pandey, the general secretary of the BJP’s youth wing in Varanasi, says India is a Hindu nation, and claims that all the country’s Muslims “were forcibly converted and made slaves by changing their religion” from Hinduism centuries ago.
Mainstream historians paint a much more complicated picture, where the South Asian subcontinent experienced waves of migration, invasion, colonialism, trading, conversion and assimilation over the centuries that created the multifaith giant of today’s India.
But not all Hindus are supporters of a Hindu nationalist narrative.
Vishwambhar Nath Mishra, the priest of a prominent Hindu temple in Varanasi, believes Modi’s stoking of religious tensions is ruining the fabric of Indian society. Varanasi, he noted, is a spiritual center, home to all faiths.
“All practices are allowed, and they help each other grow,” Mishra said, standing outside his temple near the banks of the Ganges.
“Christianity, Muslims, Buddhism, Hinduism … they live here in a good harmony. And if we have any differences, we sit across the platform and we discuss the issues. This unique fabric has a strained condition now. We have a fear that this fabric may break.”
The sentiment is echoed by Ali in his Varanasi shop, where he fears for his community’s survival.
“Muslims have anyway become untouchables in this government,” he said.
“People say leave the country, but we say we were born here. We will be buried in the soil of this land. This is my country.”

Sufism Can Serve As Beacon For Humanity At Time When The World Was Threatened By Conflicts: PM Narendra Modi
Feb 28, 2025,

------------
New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi on Friday said Sufism, with values of love, peace and spirituality integral to it, could serve as a beacon for humanity at a time when the world was threatened by conflicts. "In today's world, where war is causing immense suffering to humanity, this message of unity and peace becomes even more relevant," he said. The PM was speaking at the 25th edition of Jahan-e-Khusrau, the annual Sufi music festival, at Sunder Nursery where he delivered a message of unity, love and cultural harmony.
Modi highlighted the deep connection between Indian culture and Sufi traditions, underscoring that India's spiritual and artistic heritage has always been rooted in inclusivity and shared wisdom and recalled the contributions of Amir Khusrau, the revered poet and Sufi mystic, who saw India as a paradise where diverse traditions flourished in harmony.
Quoting Khusrau, he said, "Our Hindustan is that garden of heaven where every shade of culture blossoms." He added: "Sufi saints did not confine themselves to mosques and shrines alone. They recited the Quran, listened to the Vedas, and understood the wisdom of the Upanishads." He emphasised that Sanskrit, as the ancient language of knowledge, played a crucial role in shaping India's philosophical and spiritual landscape, connecting deeply with Sufi thought.
Modi also reflected on the unifying power of music, describing how Indian and Sufi music had blended seamlessly to create expressions of devotion and love. He cited Khusrau's words. "Indian music has such a hypnotic charm that even deer in the forest forget their fears and stand still, mesmerised." He emphasised that Sufi music was not just an artistic tradition but a means to transcend human differences and connect with the divine.
Reinforcing the importance of India's cultural legacy, Modi spoke of the contributions of various poets and philosophers who enriched the spiritual fabric of the nation. He mentioned Surdas, Rahim, Raskhan and Kabir, all of whom, despite their diverse religious backgrounds, echoed a common theme — love as the highest spiritual pursuit. "Whether we listen to Surdas, Rahim, Raskhan or Amir Khusrau, we ultimately reach the same point — the peak of spiritual love, where human limitations dissolve, and a union between man and the divine is felt," he said.
Modi drew upon the words of Rumi, the Persian Sufi poet, to illustrate the power of gentle wisdom over aggression. Quoting Rumi, he said, "Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder." He emphasised that the philosophy of love and peace propagated by Sufi saints was crucial in today's turbulent times, serving as an antidote to conflict and division.
Modi said the timeless values of Sufism aligned with India's spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — ‘the world is one family'. He urged people to carry forward the message of love and unity, ensuring that cultural traditions continue to bridge divides and foster global harmony. "When we awaken, we realise that the distance between Kashi and Kashan is merely half a step," he said.

UK Government Launches Working Group On Anti-Muslim Hatred/Islamophobia Definition
1st Mar 2025
A NEW working group has been established to provide government with a definition of Anti-Muslim Hatred/Islamophobia, supporting a wider stream of work to tackle the unacceptable incidents of anti-Muslim hatred.
It will advise government on how to best understand, quantify and define prejudice, discrimination, and hate crime targeted against Muslims.
With incidents of anti-Muslim hate crime at record high in England and Wales, the group’s work will support wider and ongoing government-led efforts to tackle religiously motivated hate crime – delivering on the government’s Plan for Change mission for safer streets.
Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, said:
The rise in anti-Muslim hate crime is unacceptable and has no place in our society.
That’s why we’ve committed to defining Anti-Muslim Hatred/Islamophobia, as a crucial steps forward in tackling it and creating a society where everyone feels safe and welcome.
The group will be chaired by Dominic Grieve KC, bringing his years of legal and government expertise to the role.
Dominic Grieve KC said:
We know Islamophobia is as challenging to define as its existence is undoubted. We need to balance addressing the lived experience of those who are victims of it and the right of British Muslims to feel heard and protected as equal citizens of our country, with the unwavering requirement to maintain freedom of thought and expression under law for all.
I welcome the government’s decision to bring forward this needed work and I am hopeful that this commission will come up with principles in defining Islamophobia which are compatible with those requirements and can thus help support positive change in our country.
Alongside drawing on their own expertise, members will engage widely to ensure the definition accounts for the variety of backgrounds and experiences of Muslim communities across the United Kingdom.
The group’s proposed definition will be non-statutory and will provide the government and other relevant bodies with an understanding of unacceptable treatment and prejudice against Muslim communities.
The group’s proposed definition must be compatible with the unchanging right of British citizens to exercise freedom of speech and expression – which includes the right to criticise, express dislike of, or insult religions and/or the beliefs and practices of adherents.

RIYADH: An Indian family has given the Saudi Arabia government a 1925 letter written by King Abdulaziz, the nation’s founder and first monarch, addressed to a scholar Ghulam Rasul Meher.
Nadir Akram told Arab News recently that his great-grandfather Meher and his family have a history of scholarship, education, and journalism.
The letter was a part of an extensive collection of writings, books, and documents belonging to his great-grandfather, and was entrusted to him, because he lives and works in the region, said Akram.
“Given my deep connection to Saudi Arabia and the time I have spent here, I have developed profound admiration for the pivotal role played by King Abdulaziz in shaping history and laying the foundations of the Kingdom.
“I firmly believe that the most fitting place for this letter was the King Abdulaziz Foundation (Darah), where it could serve as a valuable historical resource for generations to come, enriching our collective understanding of its significance,” Akram said.
Akram gave the letter to the chairman of the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives, Prince Faisal bin Salman, at Darah’s headquarters in Al-Murabba district, Riyadh.
“The letter provides a glimpse into the warm and cordial exchanges between King Abdulaziz and my great-grandfather Meher. It has reference to 1925 meetings and highlights Meher’s reputation as a distinguished author and journalist,” Akram noted.
Beyond its historical value, the letter reflects King Abdulaziz’s diplomacy and the Kingdom’s long-standing tradition of honoring scholars and writers, said Akram.
Akram emphasized the historical significance of the letter, noting that it goes beyond personal correspondence, offering insight into key developments in the country at the time.
It underscores King Abdulaziz’s dedication to unifying the nation, fostering peace, and strengthening diplomatic ties with diverse communities on a global scale.
Akram praised Darah for preserving, documenting, and showcasing significant aspects of King Abdulaziz’s life and legacy.
He described his visit to the foundation and museum as a remarkable experience, and encouraged others to explore the exhibits and historical records.
Akram, who works as a strategic partner at Bain & Co., said he was honored to make the contribution.

Lawyers thrash Muslim man who reached UP court to marry Hindu woman
Feb 28, 2025
A huge ruckus broke out at a civil court in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur as lawyers thrashed a Muslim man who had come there to marry a Hindu girl.
Sources told India Today TV that Salman, a resident of Maniha village in Jaunpur, arrived at the civil court with a young woman to register their marriage. However, upon learning that the couple belonged to different religious backgrounds, several lawyers expressed strong objections and started physically assaulting Salman.
Amid the escalating commotion, Salman and his family managed to escape, narrowly avoiding further harm. Local authorities alerted the police, which later eased the situation. Officials then took the woman to the police station for further inquiry.
After the incident, the family members of the woman also reached the police station and alleged that Salman deceived her into marriage and was trying to solemnise the wedding against her will.
The girl's mother also claimed that Salman had made such an attempt in the past as well.
After the parents of the woman lodged a formal complaint against Salman, a case was registered against him. Further investigation into to matter is underway.

Adityanath's Remarks Against Urdu Assail the Constitution
S.N. Sahu
Perversity and hatred were writ large in Uttar Pradesh chief minister Adityanath’s venal remarks against Urdu in Uttar Pradesh assembly. He said that those leaders who plead for teaching children in Urdu want to make them maulvis, and take the country on the path of “Kathmulla” and alleged rabid fanaticism. He spewed this venom when Samajwadi Party leader Mata Prasad Pandey demanded Urdu translation of the debates of the assembly after Speaker of the House Satish Mahana announced that proceedings would be made available in four regional languages – Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Braj and Bundeli – as well as English.
Adityanath has a record of making hateful remarks against Muslims and Islam. Urdu is not a language confined to people of any particular faith. If Adityanath’s understanding is that Urdu is the language spoken only by Muslims is a gross distortion of documented history outlining its status as a language of people cutting across faiths and regions of our country.
Urdu as a language gave richness and beauty to the idea of an India rooted in linguistic diversity. The language – apart from remaining allied to the court – spread to the military camps and eventually evolved and prospered as a language of the masses. Former president, the late K.R. Narayanan, while inaugurating the All India Urdu Editors Conference on July 29, 1999, categorically stated, “It(Urdu) is not a Muslim language, but an Indian language which is used not only in Northern India, but in Eastern, Western, Southern and Central India not only by Muslims but by Hindus and others”.
He asserted, “Sant Tukaram, it is well known, wrote many of his devotional songs in Dakhani Urdu. Prem Chand wrote his early works in Urdu. Lala Lajpat Rai spoke Urdu and his paper Bandemataram was published in Urdu”.
By applying his convoluted standards on Urdu, Adityanath would have considered Sant Tukaram, Prem Chand and Lala Lajpat Rai fanatics because they used the Urdu language.
Urdu has a pan-Indian identity rooted in the cultural and civilisational ethos of our country. How is it that a chief minster, Adityanath, grossly distorts it and falsely associates it with fanaticism and bigotry?
Urdu has the enviable record of enjoying the status of the third largest language of India. It is recognised in the Sahitya Academy Awards. It is the official language of Jammu and Kashmir, the second official language of several states including Telangana, Jharkhand, Bihar and Delhi. Most importantly it is enshrined in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.
Therefore, the expression of utter contempt for Urdu by Adityanath constitutes an affront to the constitution itself and vast masses of people who use it as a medium of communication and transmission of ideas.
Mahatma Gandhi with his rare sensitivity to flag the importance of all languages of India accorded national importance to Urdu and went to the extent of saying that an amalgam of Hindi and Urdu-Hindustani would be the link language of our country. Participating in the Sahitya Sammelan in Indore in 1918 he said that Hindi is incomplete without Urdu. After India attained its independence he famously said, “In my view he who objects to Urdu is to that extent less of an Indian.”
If that yardstick is applied, Adityanath’s derisive remarks reduces him.
President Narayanan in his aforementioned 1999 speech on Urdu journalism had noted that Urdu was the medium of mass communication even before newspapers were brought out in a printed form. He stated that from Delhi alone 120 handwritten Urdu manuscript papers were mailed containing nationalist writings and attacking British rule. Large crowds in towns and cities attentively heard the contents of those manuscripts read aloud by the readers in important squares. It is instructive that the contents of those manuscripts agitated people to such an extent that Lord Auckland and Lord Canning in their official minutes traced the Great Rebellion of 1857 to the spread of disaffection against the British rule by those handwritten Urdu documents.
Narayanan stated, “In 1907 in the Golden Jubilee year of the Great Rebellion, a group of Urdu journalists formed a society called Bharat Mata Sabha which had as its objective completing the unfinished task of 1857”.
Maulana Hasrat Mohani’s paper Urdu-i-Mualla published addresses of the presidents of the Indian National Congress. He preceded the Indian National Congress in demanding full freedom for our country.
Adityanath should remember that Netaji Subhas Bose preferred Urdu words in his Indian National Army which aimed at freeing India from British rule through armed struggle. The Urdu term Sipah Salar denoting Supreme Commander was freely employed by him and the INA. Netaji’s Azad Hind Fauj’s motto comprised three Urdu words: ‘Ittehad, itmad aur qurbani (unity, faith and sacrifice).’
Urdu represents a fusion of cultures and linguistic diversities of India. It affirms our composite culture and, therefore, is a medium of not just communication but also of communal harmony, national integration and social amity. In deriding Urdu, Adityanath has gone against the constitution and the linguistic diversity which defines India. In upholding Urdu, Indians can defeat the majoritarianism and Islamophobia represented by Adityanath.

Allahabad HC Directs ASI To Clean Shahi Jama Masjid In SambhalAhead Of Ramazan
Piyush Srivastava
01.03.25
Allahabad High Court on Friday directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to clean the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal but refrained from passing an order for whitewashing the mosque.
The order was passed by Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal on a petition filed by the mosque management committee seeking permission for whitewashing and cleaning of the structure ahead of Ramazan.
The court had on Thursday directed the ASI to inspect the mosque site and submit a report by Friday morning. In its primary report, the ASI informed the court that there was no need to whitewash the structure.
“It is expected from the masjid committee that they would not put any hindrance and would cooperate with the ASI. It is further made clear that no person from the administration would interfere when the cleaning work is being done by the ASI,” Justice Agrawal observed while posting the matter to March 4.
Mosque counsel S.F.A. Naqvi submitted that he would like to file “an objection to the report as whitewashing needs to be done in the masjid which is an annual feature”.
However, Naqvi added that “cleaning, removal of dust and removal of vegetation growth in and around the monument may be done by the ASI forthwith as the holy month of Ramazan begins from tomorrow (March 1)”.
The high court directed Naqvi to file a plea against the ASI’s report within 48 hours.
Manoj Kumar Singh, appearing for the ASI, told the court that a supplementary affidavit along with the inspection report would be e-filed by next Monday.
The high court said that the ASI inspected the mosque in the presence of its mutawallis (caretakers).
“It was found that the interior of the mosque was painted with thick layers of enamel paint of sharp colours like golden, red, green and yellow concealing the original surface of the monument. According to the inspection, the modern enamel paint was still in good condition. The report also enumerates that there seemed to be some signs of deterioration of the entrance gate as well as in the chambers located behind and the northern side of the prayer hall,” the court said.
“Further, the lintel of the doorway is badly decayed and needs replacement. The report takes care of the fact that the chambers are in dilapidated condition, especially the ceilings which are supported by wooden shingles and the conservation and science wing of the ASI would bring a detailed report with regard to the same,” it added.
The mosque became the centre of a controversy when, responding to a petition by a few Hindutva groups, a local court had on November 19, 2024, ordered the survey of the shrine. The petitioners claimed it was a temple before it was converted into a mosque during Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s reign. The local administration had conducted the first survey the same day.
Large-scale violence erupted when the surveyors reached the site again on
November 24 amid the chanting of Jai Sri Ram by some people. Four persons died
in police firing.

Act Against Accused, But Don’t Target Community: Muslims Of Ajmer District
Mar 1, 2025
Ajmer: The Muslim community in Ajmer district Friday demanded strict punishment for those involved in the case of alleged sexual abuse of schoolgirls in Bijaynagar but objected to what it called the "targeting of a particular community in the name of investigation".
Several Muslim leaders of Muslim Ekta Manch (MEM), an organisation of different Muslim panchayats and biradaris, alleged that even the places of worship of the community were being unfairly targeted in Bijaynagar in the wake of the alleged scandal.
The MEM leaders gathered at the district collectorate after the special namaz. They submitted a memorandum to the district administration addressed to CM Bhajan Lal Sharma.
"A case of sexual abuse involving minors at Bijaynagar in Beawar district has come to light, and the Muslim community condemns such a heinous crime. We demand strict action against those involved so that no one dares commit such a crime," said the memorandum.
It added, "The district administration should take strict action against those involved but should not implicate those who are not part of this crime. They should also restrain those who are colouring this case based on religion because the accused may be from any community, and an entire community should not be stigmatised."
"The Muslim community does not support anyone who does not respect women, and those who commit such heinous crimes should be punished regardless of their religion," the memorandum further said.
Speaking to the media, the MEM leaders said they came forward because they found a particular religion was being targeted in the Bijaynagar case. "The administration seized a part of a religious building in Bijaynagar during the police investigation, which is not fair. The Muslim community wants to ensure that no particular religion is targeted," said Munsif Ali Khan, an MEM leader who is a lawyer and also state vice-president of BJP's minority wing.

All You Need To Know About Changes Proposed To Waqf Bill By JPC, Now Cleared By Cabinet
by Apurva Vishwanath
March 1, 2025
The Union Cabinet on Thursday cleared all 14 amendments to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 proposed by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) last month. It is likely to be tabled in the Parliament in the second half of the Budget session, which starts on March 10.
The Bill was introduced in August last year to amend the Waqf Act of 1995 which governs the management of waqf properties in India. It proposed sweeping changes which give the government a foot in the door in regulating waqf properties, and settling disputes regarding such properties.
Amidst criticism from the Opposition, the Bill had been referred to a JPC. On January 27, the Committee headed by BJP MP Jagadambika Pal cleared 14 amendments proposed by the BJP and its allies, while rejecting 44 amendments proposed by the Opposition. The amendments cleared by the JPC, and now the Union Cabinet, address some of the more contentious parts of the Bill.
Extended time-frame
The 2024 Bill required every waqf and the property dedicated to the waqf to be registered on a central portal and database, within six months of the law’s commencement. Any “government property” in this database would be flagged to the District Collector who would then “make such inquiry as he deems fit” and submit a report to the state government.
The JPC accepted an amendment proposed by JD(U) MP Dileshwar Kamait, relaxing the timeline for registering a waqf property, in certain cases, provided the mutawalli provides “sufficient cause for not filing the details of the waqf on the portal”.
The amended Bill thus gives the Waqf Tribunal the power to extend the timeline in select cases. However, given that the circumstances which can be considered “sufficient”, and the period of extension are not specified, the Tribunal will have to exercise its discretion.
The JPC also accepted another consequent amendment by BJP MP Dr Radha Mohan Das Agarwal. The 2024 Bill stated that six months after the proposed law’s commencement, no suit, appeals or legal proceedings can be filed by waqfs if they are not registered under the central portal.
This essentially means, not registering on the portal would result in forfeiting the right to move a court in case of an encroachment or any other dispute involving the waqf land. The amendment proposed by Agarwal extends this timeline too, adding that courts can allow filing of suits, subject to the waqf submitting an affidavit on why it did not register on the portal within six months.
Role of District Collector
The 2024 Bill gave the District Collector the powers that were previously with the Waqf Tribunal.
The Bill stated that “any government property identified or declared as waqf property, before or after the commencement of the Act, shall not be deemed to be a waqf property.” This determination, however, was to be made by the collector, not the Waqf Tribunal.
The Bill also added that until the government makes a decision, the disputed property will be treated as a Government property and not waqf property.
From the state government taking over the functioning of a Waqf Tribunal and judging its own case against a waqf, to a prima facie presumption in favour of government on ownership of property — several concerns were raised about this provision.
The JPC accepted four amendments proposed by Telugu Desam MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu to replace the district collector in the dispute resolution process with a more senior officer of the state government.
The so-called “designated officer” will be responsible for making necessary changes to the revenue records, if a property is deemed to be a government property and not a Waqf property.
Representation on Waqf Boards
The 2024 Bill proposed allowing a non-Muslim Chief Executive Officer, and at least two non-Muslim members to be appointed by the state government to the waqf boards at the state level.
The JPC accepted BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay’s amendment to this provision, which states that the state government official who is part of the Waqf Board shall be a Joint Secretary-level officer “dealing with Waqf matters”.
Another amendment accepted by the JPC was by BJP Rajya Sabha MP Gulam Ali who proposed making it mandatory to have a member in the Waqf tribunal with knowledge of Muslim law and jurisprudence. The previous version of the Waqf Bill proposed that the tribunal have a sitting or retired district judge (as chairperson), and a Joint Secretary-level officer of the state government (as a member).

Nottingham councillor suspended for appearing to suggest Muslims shouldn't vote Labour
28 FEB 2025
A Nottingham Labour councillor has been suspended after comments in which he appeared to suggest that Muslims should not vote for his party. Nottinghamshire Live has been told by a source within the local party that councillor Sajid Mohammed has been suspended from the local group for an initial period of six months.
Within that six months, Councillor Mohammed will now sit as an independent member of Nottingham City Council. No decision has been made in terms of Councillor Mohammed's membership of the Labour Party nationally, but for now, he is no longer a member of the Nottingham Labour group.
The comments in question were made at an Islamophobia Awareness Month launch event in November 2023, when Councillor Mohammed was one of the speakers alongside Nottingham East's Labour MP Nadia Whittome and Dr Musharraf Hussain, the chief executive of the Karimia Institute in Bobbers Mill.
In a recording passed to Nottinghamshire Live, Councillor Mohammed, speaking about the Labour Party, says: "The choice is this. Do you take a pragmatist approach and try to change the party from within, have a seat at the table and then have access to power?
"Or, and this is the historical and Marxist position, is to say the structures are so appalling, we need to be an anarchist. Take all the structures down, dismantle it and start again.
"That's the most purist offer. That's where we are, I completely empathise.
"My advice is, see when the Jewish community in this country said that they were under anti-Semitism and that the Labour Party was anti-Semitic, they withdrew their vote. I'm just saying, look at other examples and what the community needs to do it absolutely needs to do."
Councillor Mohammed, who is also the CEO of the food poverty charity Himmah in Radford, was first elected as a Nottingham Labour councillor for the Mapperley ward in 2019. The suspension now means that of the 51 Labour councillors elected to the city council in the May 2023 local elections, three of them are no longer in the local group.
Nadia Farhat quit the party over the national leadership's stance on Gaza, whilst Shuguftah Quddoos was suspended for refusing to vote for drastic budget cuts in 2024. Councillor Mohammed did not want to comment on his suspension when approached by Nottinghamshire Live and the Nottingham Labour group said it would not be commenting on internal party matters.

Muslim community centre to move into former Citizens Advice building
1 MAR 2025
ByMark Smith,
The former Citizens Advice office in Northwich is set to become the new home of the town’s muslim community centre after plans were given the green light.
Chester West and Chester Council’s planning department has backed an application for the building on Meadow Court, which was previously home to the advice charity before its closure in 2020.
Northwich Muslim Community Centre has been running since 2012 at its existing premises on Church Road, but in planning documents said it has outgrown its current facilities due to the growing Muslim population in the area and the lack of space.
Services being offered at the new site would continue to include school visits, food bank and homeless food services, courses in Arabic, the Quran and Hadith, mother and baby group as well as interfaith community cohesion events.
The registered charity said there would be no external structural modifications except for signage. A design and access statement submitted in support of the scheme said the sale of the old facilities on Church Road had already been agreed in principal and the plan was to just transfer existing activities to Meadow Court.
It said: “We aim to restructure the existing space into prayer spaces by removing false walls to create a more open and inviting environment. This approach ensures minimal disruption while maximizing the usability of the facility.”
It added the impact on highways and parking would be ‘minimal’.
It said: “Meadow Court boasts eight on-site car parking spaces, including dedicated disabled parking. Additionally, we benefit from nearby parking facilities such as the paid Euro Car Park, Watermans Car Park, a free on-street carpark, and access to Victoria Car Park and Memorial Hall Car Park.”
Granting approval, a planning officer’s report added: “The development is considered acceptable in principle and would not result in an unacceptable detrimental impact upon the visual character of the application site or adversely impact upon residential amenity.”
Citizens Advice Cheshire West closed its Northwich offices during the pandemic in a bid to maintain social distancing but it was later confirmed it would not reopen.

South Street, Romford mosque plan drop-in held at The Brewery
28th February
By Charlotte Anderson
A consultation event has been held on plans for a new multi-million pound mosque in Romford.
Havering Islamic Cultural Centre (HICC) hosted a drop-in event at The Brewery shopping centre yesterday (February 27) to gather residents' views on its plans for the new facility in South Street.
The proposed site for the development - the former Smokey's Shack at 222-226 South Street - will be a relocation of HICC's current site in Waterloo Road.
It comes after Havering Council made a compulsory purchase order of the Waterloo Road site as part of the Bridge Close regeneration project.
As part of the drop-in, boards detailing the proposals for the new mosque were set up in the foyer of the Brewery, and members of HICC and those involved in the plans were on hand to answer questions.
Tahir Sharif, leader of HICC's development committee, said the event was "much busier than he thought it would be".
Mr Sharif told the Recorder: "It's been great - there's been lots of interest, so hopefully we've had some positive engagement with the community.
"We've spoken to loads of different people, both pro and anti, but it's been good to get everyone's views on board.
"This is a process, and it's early stages yet really."
As part of the compulsory purchase order of HICC's current site, Havering Council is legally obliged to pay for an "equivalent like-for-like" site.
But, the cost of the South Street development is expected to exceed the like-for-like value by £4.5 million - which the HICC will fundraise for themselves.
Pervez Badruddin, one of the HICC trustees, told the Recorder that at the beginning they "didn't want to leave" the Waterloo Road centre.
"We told the council in the beginning that we don't want to go - you will have to work around us," he said.
"But if you want us to move, we want somewhere very close [to the current site]."
He called the South Street site "excellent" because "people don't have to go far to get there".
Mohamad Rafi, part of HICC's executive committee, added that the building is in an area where there is good transport links.
"People will be able to come in on the bus, rather than bringing their cars in," Mr Rafi said. "So that way there will be less hassle for people living in the area."

Pope has 'isolated' breathing crisis in hospital, Vatican says
1 MAR 2025
Pope Francis, who has been battling pneumonia for two weeks, has had an "isolated" breathing crisis in hospital, the Vatican has said.
It led to an episode of vomiting and a "sudden worsening of his respiratory condition" on Friday following the coughing "bronchospasm".
The 88-year-old's lungs had to be aspirated - cleared of the vomit - and he is now receiving gas through a face mask to help him breathe.
Vatican sources say the Pope's doctors need 24-48 hours to determine whether there has been any damage or set back to his condition. For now they are not giving any prognosis.
The Pope remains alert and "in good spirits", the sources say.
In a statement the Vatican said: "In the early afternoon of today, after a morning spent alternating respiratory physiotherapy with prayer in the chapel, the Holy Father presented an isolated crisis of bronchospasm which, however, led to an episode of vomiting with inhalation and sudden worsening of the respiratory condition.
"The Holy Father was promptly bronchoaspirated and began non-invasive mechanical ventilation, with a good response to gas exchange."
Vatican sources said the latest crisis happened at around 14:00 local time, but did not say how long it lasted.
This latest episode comes after a couple of days in which Vatican statements had been slightly more positive, talking of a "slight improvement" in the pontiff's condition.
This morning he was given Communion.
In an earlier medical update this morning, the Vatican had said the pontiff was showing signs of improvement and would remain in Rome's Gemelli Hospital due to the complex clinical picture.
The Pope was admitted to hospital on 14 February after experiencing breathing difficulties for several days.
He was first treated for bronchitis before being diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.
Then, on 22 February, the Vatican said that the Pope had experienced a respiratory crisis and was in a "critical" condition, but later on Sunday released an update saying that he had "not presented any further respiratory crises".
The following day, the Pope issued a statement asking Catholics to pray for him after he was unable to deliver the traditional Angelus prayer in person for the second week running.
But, while the Vatican said the Pope's health is improving, it added that "further days of clinical stability are necessary to resolve the prognosis".
The pontiff is particularly susceptible to pneumonia, an infection of the lungs that can be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi, after he contracted pleurisy – an inflammation of the lungs – as a young man and had a partial lung removal.
The leader of the Roman Catholic Church has been admitted to hospital multiple times during his 12-year tenure, including being treated for bronchitis at the same hospital in March 2023.
From Argentina, Pope Francis is the first Latin American, and first Jesuit, to lead the Roman Catholic Church.

Teenage victim of suspected XL bully attack named
1 MAR 2025

The 19-year-old, from Shropshire, died at about 19:00 GMT on Wednesday at a flat on Cobhorn Drive, south Bristol.
A man and woman, both in their 20s, have been released on conditional bail after they were arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death and possession of a prohibited breed of dog.
Police have confirmed the dog has been put down. They say they are still working to confirm the breed, but initial reports suggested it may have been an XL bully.
Police are asking anyone who has any information about the attack to contact them by calling 101.
At a press conference on Thursday, Insp Terry Murphy, from Avon and Somerset Police, called the incident "incredibly rare" and said there would be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days.

Shrine set on fire in Dinajpur
Mar 1, 2025
A shrine was vandalised and set on fire by a group of people in Ghioraghat, Dinajpur, yesterday.
Devotees at the Rohim Shah Baba Bhandari Mazar in the Singra area were preparing for their two-day annual Urs, scheduled to begin on March 2.
Urs is an Islamic function observed to commemorate the death anniversary of a saint.
Locals said a group of men calling themselves Sirat-e-Mustaqeem Parishad had been lobbying for a ban on the Urs, claiming that the event promoted un-Islamic activities like music, drugs, and other immoral acts.
On February 24, the group submitted a memorandum to the upazila nirbahi officer in this regard.
Yesterday afternoon, hundreds of people gathered and marched to the shrine with lit torches, demanding a ban on the event that drew hundreds of devotees from across the country.
After a brief argument with people present at the shrine, the protesters went on a rampage.
At one point, they set fire to the shrine, stage, marquee, gate, and the tents.
After the vandals left, a devotee in tears said, "I have been attending this gathering for 21 years. We never faced such a situation. No unlawful activities take place here. A group is trying to stop the event for no reason."
Shahidul Islam Jinnah, the shrine's caretaker, said the district administration and police had given written permission for the Urs.
"We have been organising this event for years. Now they are threatening to demolish the shrine," he added.
Nazmul Haque, officer-in-charge of Ghioraghat Police Station, said police were trying to calm the situation.
An army team arrived at the site around 8:30pm and a fire service unit around 9:30pm.
"We are working to resolve the dispute through discussions with both parties," the OC said.

Torkham Border Closed for 8 consecutive days, disrupting trade and travelers
By Fidel Rahmati
March 1, 2025
The Torkham border crossing has remained closed for the eighth consecutive day, halting the movement of people, trade, and transit. This prolonged closure has caused significant disruptions for travelers and traders on both sides of the border, with hundreds of people waiting for its reopening.
Officials from the Taliban in Nangarhar, on Saturday, March 1, acknowledged that the closure has led to serious problems for those dependent on the crossing for travel and trade. Many individuals are stuck at the border, unable to proceed with their journeys or businesses.
Pakistani authorities have not provided a clear explanation for the closure, and discussions are ongoing to resolve the issue and reopen the crossing. The lack of transparency has led to frustration and uncertainty for the people affected by the situation.
Travelers stranded on both sides of the border are complaining about the poor conditions and the high costs of staying in the border areas. These conditions are making the situation even more difficult for people already facing economic challenges.
The closure of this vital trade route has had negative effects on economic exchanges, particularly the import and export processes between the two countries. This disruption is hurting businesses and impacting the livelihoods of many individuals who rely on cross-border trade for their income.
The Torkham crossing has historically been a source of political and economic tension between the Taliban and Islamabad, with previous closures leading to strained relations. This ongoing closure could further escalate these tensions and affect diplomatic ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The prolonged closure of the Torkham border crossing is taking a significant toll on the people of Afghanistan. Not only are travelers and businesses suffering, but the economic stability of the region is at risk. Both governments must work towards a swift resolution to prevent further damage to the lives of ordinary citizens.
The consequences of the border closure are not just limited to immediate economic hardship but could also fuel long-term instability in the region. As trade and transit come to a halt, the people of Afghanistan may face even more severe challenges in the coming months.

3 million people displaces in Afghanistan due to Climate Disasters, 11 million at risk, warns IOM
ByFidel Rahmati
February 28, 2025
Nearly 3 million people have been displaced in Afghanistan due to climate disasters since 2021, with 11 million still at high risk, warns the IOM.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly nine million people in Afghanistan have been affected by climate-related disasters in the past year. Over 500,000 individuals have been displaced due to floods, droughts, and other natural calamities.
The organization stated on Thursday, February 27, that in just the past year, nearly 9 million people in Afghanistan have been affected by climate-related hazards.
The IOM report revealed that nearly three million people have been displaced in Afghanistan between 2021 and 2024, with 988,000 experiencing temporary displacement in 2024 alone due to climate and disaster-related events. During this period, nearly 400,000 cases of property damage and loss of shelter occurred, along with 14,000 injuries or deaths from natural disasters.
IOM also warned that over 11 million people in Afghanistan remain at high risk of severe climate impacts, especially in vulnerable provinces like Ghor, Jawzjan, and Khost, which are most affected by these hazards.
The agency revealed that 92% of villages in Afghanistan have limited access to emergency services, while 46% face challenges in accessing healthcare. “Poor critical infrastructure further weakens disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, increasing vulnerability to climate hazards,” the IOM stated.
Meanwhile, Mihyung Park, the head of the IOM office in Afghanistan, stated, “Despite Afghanistan’s minimal contribution to global carbon emissions, the country is ranked among the top ten most vulnerable countries to climate change.”
Recently, heavy rainfall and floods in Farah province have claimed lives. Three days ago, heavy rains and floods in the mountainous areas of Qala-e-Kah district in Farah province killed 21 people and injured 4 others.
Similarly, in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan, eight people lost their lives due to heavy rainfall.
This flooding has occurred amid changing weather patterns in some areas of Afghanistan, raising concerns about an increase in natural disasters due to severe rainfall.
Climate change continues to exacerbate the suffering of millions in Afghanistan, with floods, droughts, and other disasters causing widespread displacement and loss of life. The country’s vulnerability to these changes underscores the urgent need for international support and climate resilience efforts.
As the frequency and severity of such disasters increase, it is essential that both national and global efforts are strengthened to address the impacts of climate change, improve disaster preparedness, and provide aid to those most affected.

March 01, 2025
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has strengthened its efforts to combat Yemen’s ongoing cholera crisis with a new $2 million cooperation agreement between the Saudi aid agency KSrelief and the World Health Organization.
Signed during the fourth annual Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum, the agreement was formalized by Ahmed bin Ali Al-Baiz, KSrelief’s assistant supervisor for operations and programs, and Dr. Hanan Balkhy, the regional director of WHO, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
This latest contribution raises Saudi Arabia’s total financial support for cholera response efforts in Yemen to $5 million.
The funding will be used to provide hospitals and health centers with essential medical supplies, including medicines, intravenous solutions, and antibiotics. In addition to medical aid, the initiative will support environmental sanitation, water management, and community education programs.
The agreement will also boost vaccination campaigns led by WHO aimed at curbing the spread of the disease.
Yemen has been grappling with one of the world’s worst cholera outbreaks since the beginning of the country’s civil war in 2014.
The country’s fragile healthcare system, which has been devastated by years of war, has struggled to contain repeated waves of the disease.
Cholera, which spreads through contaminated water and food, has infected over 2 million people in Yemen since 2017, with thousands of deaths recorded, many of them children.

Why Saudi Arabia is ditching plastic bottles in favor of tap water
MANAL AL-BARAKATI
February 28, 2025
RIYADH: Plastic consumption remains a deeply ingrained part of daily life in Saudi Arabia. However, growing public awareness and innovative solutions have brought the country to a crossroads in its sustainability journey.
Each year, 5 billion plastic water bottles are discarded in Saudi Arabia, of which less than 5 percent are recycled.
Despite mounting public concern about the environmental impact of plastic waste, 77 percent of Saudis continue to rely on bottled water as their main source of hydration, according to a study by Wisewell, a UAE-based water technology company.
Sami Khoreibi, founder and CEO of Wisewell, refers to this contradiction as “the plastic paradox” — a term that captures the disconnect between environmental concerns and real-world behavior.
“People know the risks, they’re aware of the damage, but they don’t feel like they have an alternative,” he told Arab News. “And until now, they really haven’t.”
Unlike other materials, plastic does not biodegrade and can take up to 1,000 years to break down, according to the UN Environment Program. As it accumulates, it pollutes ecosystems, harms marine life, degrades soil, contaminates groundwater, and poses serious health risks.
However, Saudi taste for bottled water is not entirely by choice. Khoreibi says Saudi residents have historically tended to prefer bottled water due to a lack of viable alternatives.
“For decades, tap water hasn’t been widely trusted for drinking,” he said. “And filtration solutions, when available, have either been too complex, lacked transparency, or weren’t positioned as a real replacement for bottled water.”
Saudi Arabia ensures tap water safety through advanced desalination and strict quality control. Due to its arid climate and absence of permanent rivers, about 60 percent of the country’s potable water comes from desalination, with the rest from non-renewable groundwater.
However, a mix of distrust in tap water, limited filtration options, and the extreme climate driving high hydration needs has led to a system where single-use plastic bottles are the default.
Fortunately, this is not an irreversible trend. “This is a region that has transformed itself time and time again,” said Khoreibi. “If we can shift from an oil-dependent economy to a diversified one, we can absolutely change the way people consume water.”
Beyond environmental damage, microplastics and nanoplastics also threaten public health.
Studies show that particles shed from plastic bottles over time have entered human food systems and even the bloodstream. Scientists are now linking microplastic exposure to fertility issues, neurological disorders, and other health concerns.
Khoreibi believes health concerns will be the biggest driver of change. “People care about the planet, but let’s be honest — what really moves people is personal health,” he said.
“If you’re drinking from plastic bottles, you’re exposing yourself to microplastics daily. And what we’re seeing in new research is alarming — these particles are showing up in human organs, even in unborn babies.
“This isn’t just an environmental issue anymore. It’s a human health crisis.”
A recent survey by Wisewell found that 65 percent of Saudi residents are already concerned about the health implications of plastic consumption. However, many have continued using bottled water because no widely trusted alternative has been available.
, including banning plastic bags and straws as part of its intensified sustainability efforts.
Khoreibi stresses that tackling plastic waste at its source is more effective than relying solely on recycling. “The best way to increase recycling rates is actually to reduce what needs to be recycled in the first place,” he said.
“We don’t need more efficient ways to deal with plastic waste — we need to eliminate single-use plastic bottles entirely.”
Khoreibi drew a direct parallel between the rise of sustainable water solutions and the early development of solar energy in the region. In 2007, he launched Abu Dhabi’s first solar company at a time when the idea of using solar power in an oil-rich country was met with skepticism.
“They thought it was crazy,” he said. “Why would a country with so much oil invest in solar? But fast forward a few years, and now solar is a key part of the energy mix.”
He added: “The same thing will happen with water — the idea that you need bottled water for safety and quality is a myth that’s going to disappear.”
Alternative solutions such as refill stations, biodegradable packaging, and home filtration systems are already transforming how people access clean water. Wisewell, for example, has developed a smart filtration system that provides real-time data on water quality, filter life, and consumption patterns.
Khoreibi believes trust is key to adoption. “Filtration isn’t new, but people need to see and understand that it works,” he said. “That’s why our system gives users real-time data — they can actually monitor their water quality, so there’s no more mystery about what they’re drinking.”
Saudi Arabia offers a prime landscape for shifting from bottled water consumption to sustainable alternatives. With one of the world’s youngest populations, the country is eager for innovation.
Additionally, the government is actively promoting sustainability and technology, while consumer awareness about plastic waste and microplastics is at an all-time high.
Recognizing this shift, Wisewell has recently entered the Saudi market. The expansion aligns with Vision 2030’s environmental goals, offering Saudi households a sustainable alternative to plastic water bottles.
Khoreibi sees this as a crucial step in reducing the Kingdom’s reliance on single-use plastics. “This is one of the most exciting markets in the world right now for sustainability-driven solutions,” he said.
“Saudi Arabia is undergoing massive change, and there’s a real appetite for innovation. We’re not just launching a product — we’re helping drive a movement.”
Nonetheless, consumer education remains a challenge. “It’s not just about giving people an alternative — it’s about making them feel confident in it,” Khoreibi said.
“They need to believe that a filtration-based system is not just an option, but the best option for their health, their convenience, and their wallets.”
Khoreibi views Saudi Arabia’s embrace of sustainable water solutions as part of a broader regional shift, positioning the Gulf not just as an importer of innovation but as a driver of global solutions.
“For so long, we’ve looked to the West for technology,” he said. “Is it German? Is it American? Is it Japanese? But that’s changing. The Gulf is now producing world-class technology — not just for itself, but for export.
“The future of sustainable water solutions doesn’t have to come from Europe or North America. It can come from here.”
Saudi Arabia has the potential to lead the region in eliminating single-use plastics, setting a precedent for neighboring countries. A successful effort would not only address its own plastic crisis but also help shape the global conversation on water consumption and sustainability.
“This isn’t just about stopping plastic waste,” Khoreibi said. “It’s about rethinking the way we consume water entirely. And Saudi Arabia has the power to lead that change.”

Pakistan 'concerned over' arms left by US in Afghanistan amid surge in terrorist attacks
By Web Desk
February 28, 2025
The Foreign Office said on Friday that Pakistan remained concerned over weapons left behind by the United States in Afghanistan following its hasty withdrawal in 2021.
The US left behind $7 billion worth of military equipment in Afghanistan, which was quickly seized by Taliban fighters as they swept the country during a lightning offensive, according to a report by the US Department of Defence in 2022.
Addressing the weekly news briefing in Islamabad today, FO Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan said these "sophisticated weapons" were being used by terrorists for attacks inside Pakistan.
“We have impressed upon the international community and Afghan authorities to address this issue,” he added.
Shafqat further said that Pakistan desired a friendly and cooperative relationship with Afghanistan, but the stumbling block in the way of progress was the sanctuaries enjoyed by terrorists on Afghan territory.
He said Pakistan would continue to pursue various channels of communications with the Afghan authorities to address this matter.
Referring to the closure of Torkham border crossing, the spokesperson said operational constraints forced Pakistan to take this action.
“The Afghan side is trying to construct a border post on our side unilaterally,” he noted, adding that Islamabad had urged the authorities in Kabul to resolve such issues through bilateral mechanisms such as a Joint Coordination Committee meeting instead of resorting to unilateral actions.
He hoped the matter would be resolved through dialogue.
Responding to another question, the spokesperson said that the F-16 oversight program is a regular feature of Pakistan-US defence collaboration.
“Pakistan welcomes its continuation,” he said, adding that this was a robust and dense relationship, expressing Pakistan's commitment to carrying this relationship forward.
In January this year, the FO said that the advanced weapons had been an issue of profound concern for the safety and security of Pakistan and its citizens.
"These weapons, left behind in the aftermath of the withdrawal of its troops in August 2021, have been used by terrorist organisations, including the TTP [Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan], to carry out terrorist attacks in Pakistan," FO spokesperson had added.
Pakistan had been "repeatedly calling upon the de facto authorities in Kabul to take all necessary measures to ensure that these weapons do not fall into the wrong hands," he had added.
The statement comes as US President Donald Trump called for the return of billions of dollars’ worth of military equipment left behind in Afghanistan after the 2021 American troop withdrawal, according to media reports.
The reports said that the president also pressed for the removal of US generals involved in what he described as a disastrous exit.
“We left billions, tens of billions of dollars worth of equipment behind, brand new trucks,” Trump said during his first Cabinet meeting Wednesday, FOX News quoted him as saying.
He said the Afghan Taliban were selling the military weapons and gear, making Afghanistan, in Trump’s words, “one of the biggest sellers of military equipment in the world.”

Suicide blast tears through Akora Khattak seminary
Umer Farooq
March 1, 2025
• Maulana Samiul Haq’s son, Hamidul Haq Haqqani, among six killed; 18 injured in bombing following Friday congregation
• Darul Uloom Haqqania is considered alma mater of ‘Haqqani Network’ members, including current Afghan interior minister
• No group claims responsibility, Afghan Taliban accuse IS-K of being behind brazen attack
PESHAWAR: Maulana Hamidul Haq Haqqani — son of Maulana Samiul Haq and chief of his own faction of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-S) — was among six people who perished in a suicide attack at the Darul Uloom Haqqani in Nowshera district, on Friday.
The suicide bomber detonated explosives strapped to his body after the Friday congregation, leaving another 18 people injured.
“Maulana Haq was leaving the seminary for his home after prayers when he was targeted by the suicide bomber,” KP Police Chief Zulfiqar Hameed told Dawn.
Three police personnel are also among the injured, Mr Hameed said, adding that the personnel were deployed to provide security to Mr Haq.
He said that over a year ago, the Haqqania seminary had received threats, prompting deployment of 20 police personnel, with 17 for the protection of the seminary premises. An investigation into the attack has been launched, he added.
A senior JUI-S leader and Mr Haq’s close confidant, Maulana Yousaf Shah, however, claimed that the JUI-S leader had never shared any information regarding threats to his life.
He said he spoke to Mr Haq on Thursday, but the latter did not speak of any concerns regarding his security. “Those who targeted him are the enemies of the religion,” Mr Shah told Dawn over the phone from Saudi Arabia.
Eye-witnesses said that the suicide bomber had reached the gate used by Maulana Haq to leave the mosque, adding that the explosion took place after the prayers, when the Maulana was exiting to go home.
“The suicide bomber was dressed as a religious scholar. He arrived at the gate just as the Maulana was leaving the mosque and detonated the explosives,” said Muhammad Mudassar, a local resident.
In the wake of the blast, emergency was declared in local hospitals, including the district’s main medical teaching institute Qazi Hussain Ahmad Medical Complex, Nowshera.
An official report shared by the hospital director said six persons were killed in the explosion, with two being pronounced ‘dead on arrival’. According to the report, an 11-year-old child was also among the 15 injured brought to the hospital.
The Haqqani moniker
A former member of the National Assembly from 2002 to 2007, Maulana Haq took over as party chief after his father, an influential religious scholar and a former senator, was stabbed to death at his residence in Rawalpindi in November 2018.
Often dubbed a ‘Jihad University’ by the Western media, the Darul Uloom Haqqani counts key Taliban figures among its alumni. Founded in 1947, the seminary is located about 60km east of the provincial capital of Peshawar, on the Grand Trunk Road in Nowshera district
While the seminary’s leadership has maintained a low profile of late, its former head Maulana Samiul Haq, was its most active and vocal leader, both in local and cross-border geo-politics vis a vis Afghanistan.
He was often dubbed the “Father of the Afghan Taliban” since many of the key members of that dispensation were his students and protégés. Leading figures of the Haqqani group — including its head Jalaluddin Haqqani, his sons Sirajuddin Haqqani (the current interior minister of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan), Anas Haqqani and Ibrahim Haqqani – are all graduates of the Darul Uloom, and use the moniker ‘Haqqani’ to signify their connection to Akora Khattak.
However, when trouble came to the border regions in the wake of the US-launched war on terror at the turn of the millennium, Mr Samiul Haq kept his distance from the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Pakistani Taliban faction which challenged the state writ and were often behind violent acts and attacks in the region.
He also favoured the anti-polio vaccination campaigns, which the TTP often resisted by attacking the polio staff and the security officials deployed with them.
IS-K and Afghan Taliban rivalry
Abdul Mateen Qani, the spokesman for the interior ministry in Kabul, said the government “strongly condemn the attack” and blamed it on the militant Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) group.
Although no group has come forward to accept responsibility for the attack, the IS-K’s historic attitude towards the seminary and its leadership is noteworthy.
Over the past decade or so, the IS-K has emerged as a militant player in Pakistan’s border areas and Afghanistan. Calling Maulana Haq and the Darul Uloom Haqqania supporters of the Afghan Taliban, it had recently warned of targeting Haq and those who supported them.
According to Iftikhar Firdous, founder and editor of The Khorasan Diary, IS-K had consistently named Maulana Haq and Darul Uloom Haqqania as Pakistan’s “extended hand” within Afghanistan in several publications.
“A video shared by IS-K on February 23 mentioned Maulana Haq and the Darul Uloom Haqqania as Pakistan’s Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan and threatened to target them and those who supported them,” Mr Firdous said.
On December 11, 2024, Afghan Taliban’s acting minister for refugees, Khalil Rahman Haqqani, and six other people were killed in an explosion in the Afghan capital Kabul. The Taliban spokesperson said in a statement that Khalil had been killed by the banned Islamic State militant group.

Security forces kill six terrorists in North Waziristan IBO
By Zarmeen Zehra
February 28, 2025
At least six terrorists were killed by security forces during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan district, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Friday.
According to the military’s media wing, the operation was conducted on the reported presence of terrorists in the general area of Ghulam Khan Kalay in North Waziristan.
“During the conduct of the operation, own troops effectively engaged the khwarij [terrorists] location, as a result of which, six khwarij were sent to hell,” read the statement.
Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the slain terrorists, the ISPR said, adding that the militants remained actively involved in numerous activities against the security forces as well as the killing of innocent civilians.
A sanitisation operation was conducted to eliminate any other terrorists found in the area as the security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism from the country.
The country witnessed a sharp increase in terror attacks in January 2025, surging by 42% compared to the previous month, according to data released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), a think tank.
The data revealed that at least 74 militant attacks were recorded nationwide, resulting in 91 fatalities, including 35 security personnel, 20 civilians, and 36 militants. Another 117 individuals sustained injuries, including 53 security forces personnel, 54 civilians, and 10 militants.
KP remained the worst-affected province, followed by Balochistan. In KP’s settled districts, militants carried out 27 attacks, resulting in 19 fatalities, including 11 security personnel, six civilians, and two militants.
The tribal districts of KP (erstwhile Fata) witnessed 19 attacks, leading to 46 deaths, including 13 security personnel, eight civilians, and 25 militants.
Balochistan also experienced a surge in militant activity, with at least 24 attacks, which claimed 26 lives, including 11 security personnel, six civilians, and nine militants.

Islamabad seeks US clarity over Afghans’ resettlement
Baqir Sajjad Syed
March 1, 2025
• FO spox says world must address issue of US arms now in Taliban possession
• Lauds continuation of US oversight facility for F-16s
• Cautions Washington against interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs
ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office on Friday sought clarity from the US on its policy about the resettlement of Afghan refugees in third countries, and urged the international community to address the issue of US weapons left in Afghanistan.
“US has suspended the [resettlement] process, so we are waiting for further clarification on that point” before making any decisions, FO spokesman Shafqat Ali Khan said at the weekly media briefing.
Pakistan has, meanwhile, refrained from openly endorsing President Donald Trump’s call to retrieve US military equipment left in Afghanistan. However, it urged the international community to address the issue, warning that abandoned arms were being used by terrorists in Pakistan.
“The international community should help deal with this problem,” Mr Khan said.
Pakistan has long raised concerns that weapons left behind by US forces during the 2021 withdrawal have been fuelling violence on its soil, particularly as terrorism resurged following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. However, initial warnings from Islamabad found little traction in Washington.
“The question of weapons left behind by the US remains a serious concern for us for one particular reason, that those weapons are being used by the terrorists for attacks inside Pakistan,” Mr Khan said, noting that Islamabad had been raising the issue with American officials.
President Trump reignited the debate over the issue soon after beginning his second term, calling for the retrieval of an estimated $7 billion worth of assets, including firearms, communication devices, and armoured vehicles.
However, retrieving the equipment presents significant challenges. Much of the military hardware had been transferred to the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces before their collapse, allowing the Taliban to seize the stockpiles. The $7bn worth of arms are in addition to weapons that had been given to Afghan forces. The logistical and diplomatic complexities of reclaiming or neutralising these weapons present significant hurdles.
Additionally, the Taliban have dismissed US demands, instead calling for more advanced weaponry to combat ISIS-K, further complicating the regional security landscape.
While Pakistan shares concerns over these weapons, it remains cautious about aligning too closely with Mr Trump’s position, wary that the issue could escalate further. Some analysts have speculated that Washington may even consider military options to recover the hardware, a possibility that could further destabilise the region.
Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference a few days ago, President Trump called for a strategy to retrieve the military assets now in Taliban possession.
“What happens between Afghanistan and the United States is a matter between two sovereign countries,” Mr Khan said, signalling Pakistan’s intent to remain neutral while pushing for a global solution to the growing security threat.
Stalled resettlement
Pakistan seeks clarity from the US on its policy regarding the resettlement of Afghan refugees in third countries before making any decisions, the spokesman said, adding, the “US has suspended the process, so we are waiting for further clarification on that point.”
One of President Trump’s first actions upon returning to office was to halt the resettlement programme for Afghans, who had worked with US forces before its 2021 withdrawal or were involved in human rights activism. The suspension has disrupted the processing and relocation of nearly 25,000 Afghans currently in Pakistan, many of whom remain at risk of persecution under the Taliban regime due to their past affiliations.
Last week, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar hinted at the possibility of deporting Afghans who are no longer eligible for resettlement in the US.
Clarifying Pakistan’s stance, Mr Khan said, “If a country is not willing to take them back, and if any of them lack valid visas or residency status, they would be deemed illegal. In such cases, our policies governing undocumented individuals will determine our course of action. However, I do not have specific numbers at this time.”
In November 2023, Pakistan launched a crackdown on undocumented foreigners. Since then, more than 815,000 individuals have been repatriated.
‘F-16 oversight’
The spokesman welcomed the continuation of the US oversight programme for its fleet of F-16 fighter jets, calling it a “regular feature” of bilateral defence collaboration.
“F-16 oversight programme is a regular feature of Pakistan-US defence collaboration under the ‘end user agreement’ and Pakistan welcomes its continuation,” he said.
The statement comes as the Trump administration released $397 million for the programme that monitors Pakistan’s use of American-made F-16s to ensure they are employed for counterterrorism operations and not against India.
The move is part of a broader release of $5.3bn in previously frozen foreign aid, primarily allocated to security and counternarcotics programmes. The funds will support the Technical Security Team, a group of US contractors stationed in Pakistan since 2019 to oversee compliance with end-use monitoring agreements.
Under strict end-use conditions, Pakistan’s Air Force, particularly its newer F-16C/D Block-52 models, is required to deploy the jets primarily for counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations. The oversight mechanism has been in place since 2019 when Washington approved a $125m support package for the F-16 fleet.
The spokesperson emphasised the broader importance of Pakistan-US relations, describing them as “robust and strong” with a history spanning several decades. “Our desire is to continue with this important relationship,” he said, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining close ties with US.
“The two sides are already engaged through diplomatic channels. Pakistan remains committed to carrying this relationship forward,” he added.
The spokesman underscored that relations with US remain a key priority in Pakistan’s foreign policy. “We intend to pursue our engagement with the new US administration, and interactions between the two countries continue,” he said.
The spokesman, however, cautioned against interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs after some Republican Congressmen urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to intervene for what they called the “restoration” of democracy in Pakistan.
Responding to a question about their letter, he dismissed concerns over Pakistan’s democratic framework. “About the full restoration of democracy, Pakistan is a democracy,” he said. “About three members of Congress writing to Mr Rubio, what I can say is that one of the foundational elements of interstate relations is non-interference in internal affairs of each other.”
Return of Pakistanis
The spokesman confirmed that Pakistan had accepted the return of eight nationals who were staying illegally in US, marking the first batch under ongoing discussions between the two countries on the issue.
“We can confirm that eight Pakistani nationals who were staying illegally in the United States have indeed returned yesterday,” he said.
He emphasised Pakistan’s policy of repatriating its citizens once their nationality is verified. “As a matter of policy, any Pakistani who is, for example, found staying illegally, and his or her nationality is confirmed, we take them back, and there is no ambiguity on that.”
The spokesman also noted that the two countries were in talks regarding the broader repatriation process.

Nine injured in Quetta blast targeting FC vehicle
Saleem Shahid
March 1, 2025
QUETTA: At least nine people, including a Frontier Corps (FC) personnel, were injured — two of them seriously — in a bomb blast in the Jan Muhammad Road area of Quetta on Friday.
The explosion occurred at the intersection of Jan Muhammad and Al-Gilani roads near a mosque and madressah as an FC vehicle was passing through the area following Friday prayers.
According to security officials, unidentified attackers planted an improvised explosive device (IED) on a motorbike and parked it at the crossroads. The IED was detonated remotely as the FC vehicle, which was on routine patrol, approached the location.
Following the powerful explosion, police and FC personnel rushed to the scene and shifted the injured to Civil Hospital Quetta. “We have received nine injured people at the hospital,” Dr Wasim Baig told Dawn, adding that the condition of two victims was critical.
The blast caused significant damage to the FC vehicle and shattered windowpanes of nearby shops and buildings.
Senior police officer Anwar Ali Khan confirmed that the FC vehicle was the intended target of the attack.
He said that around 3kg of explosives were used in the IED, which was detonated using a remote control.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) has registered a case against unidentified suspects and an investigation is underway.

10-year-old among 4 killed, 1 injured in Karachi accidents
Imtiaz Ali
February 28, 2025
Four people, including a 10-year-old, were killed, while one was injured in three separate accidents across Karachi, police said on Friday.
Rules restricting the movement of heavy vehicles were recently implemented in the metropolis amid rising traffic accidents involving dumpers and tankers and protests over the deaths of citizens.
Earlier this month, the provincial government banned the entry of heavy vehicles into the city during the daytime, only allowing them to operate from 11pm to 6am.
Exemptions, however, were granted to trucks carrying water, petroleum products, medicines, meat and other essential goods.
The Sindh government has also made it mandatory for all heavy vehicles in Karachi to have a physical fitness certificate amid the rising number of traffic accidents involving dumper trucks.
According to Aziz Bhatti police Station House Officer (SHO) Saeed Ahmed Dharejo, a man was killed, and his friend was injured when a water tanker hit them on main University Road near Sunday Bazaar today.
SHO Dharejo told Dawn.com: “The victims were on their way towards Safoora while riding the bike when the tanker hit them from behind at around 3:30pm, killing Haris Saleem, 28, on the spot while Ahmed, 18, was injured.”
The dead and injured were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), SHO Dharejo said, adding that the errant driver managed to escape.
According to Rescue 1122 official Hassaan Khan, the mob subsequently set the tanker on fire, which was destroyed before the firemen arrived.
Ittehad Town police SHO Javed Akhtar said that a recklessly driven passenger mini-bus route of W-25 hit and killed 10-year-old passerby Khadim Husain in Qaimkhani Colony near Ayesha Masjid.
The driver escaped, leaving behind the vehicle that was impounded by the police, SHO Akhtar told Dawn.com.
The officer said the mob gathered there and tried to damage the mini-bus, but the police prevented them.
In the third incident, a journalist — who also worked as a bykea rider — and his purported passenger were killed in a hit-and-run incident on main Sharea Faisal early in the morning.
Tipu Sultan police SHO Tariq Mehmood said that the victims were on their way towards Saddar when a car hit them from behind.
They suffered critical injuries and were taken to the JPMC, where both of them were pronounced dead on arrival, the SHO said.
The victims were identified as Tashkeel Haider Sandelo, who had worked in different media organisations, and Saqib Imtiaz, the passenger.
SHO Mehmood said they had obtained CCTV footage from the spot to ascertain the possible identity of the car rider.

Two crypto mining rigs recovered from Armaghan's house
By Zeeshan Shah
February 28, 2025
KARACHI: Police on Friday recovered two cryptocurrency mining machines from the residence of Armaghan, the main suspect in the Mustafa Amir abduction and murder case, in Karachi’s Defence House Authority (DHA) area.
Investigation officers said the accused would send earnings of the illegal call centre to his cousin in the United States, who is a holder of a digital account in US dollars.
The cousin of the accused would send all money to a cryptocurrency account of Armaghan's, as per the investigators. They added that the accused used to buy cryptocurrency with money earned through fraudulent means.
Earlier, details emerged regarding Armaghan's illegal activities with revelations of merchant accounts being operated by him. The accounts, as per the investigation sources, were used to transfer money obtained through fraud and scams.
Armaghan, the sources added, used to convert the money obtained via scam into digital currency and has converted millions of dollars into digital currency since 2017.
The money obtained through forgery was transferred directly to digital ATMs, the investigation sources said, while noting that it was impossible to obtain evidence of the money converted into digital currency.
The suspect — who had closed all his accounts — had created various virtual cards using digital currency, which could then be used to withdraw money from ATMs.
The whole saga unfolded after Armaghan opened fire at a team of the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) — a specialised unit of the Karachi police responsible for tackling cases related to murder and extortion — during a raid at his residence in Karachi's DHA earlier this month.
The deceased's body — found by police in a car near the Hub checkpost on January 12 and buried by the Edhi Foundation on January 16 — was later exhumed and subsequently buried after an initial DNA profiling report confirmed that the mortal remains belonged to Mustafa.
Armaghan's physical remand extended
A day earlier, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) extended the physical remand of the prime accused, along with another suspect, Shiraz Bukhari, for another five days for another five days.
This is the second extension — with the first one being awarded on February 22 — in Armaghan's initial four-day physical remand allowed on February 18.
During the hearing, the prosecution urged the court to extend the remand, while the investigating officer informed the court that the girl who was allegedly tortured by the suspects had been located, and her statement needed to be recorded.
The statements of witnesses under CrPC's Section 164 would also be documented.
Armaghan’s lawyer opposed the police’s request for an extension. The suspect told the court that he was being subjected to inhumane treatment, denied food, and not allowed access to the restroom for ten days.
The court, however, dismissed the claims as unrealistic. "A person cannot even stand if they aren't allowed to go to the washroom for 10 days," the judge remarked.
The defence further demanded prior notification before the recording of statements and called for the suspect’s medical examination. The prosecution countered by stating that the case had caused nationwide outrage, and the suspect was being investigated for possible links to money laundering and drug trafficking.
Furthermore, the investigation officer (IO) apprised the court that a Police have formed a joint investigation team (JIT) in the much-talked-about case with Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Muqaddas Haider leading probe body.
Following deliberations, the court allowed Armaghan’s parents to meet him but warned that any disorder during the meeting should be reported immediately.

Minnesota man accused of attempting to join the Islamic State group
February 28, 2025
By Ubah Ali
A Minneapolis man who allegedly expressed admiration for the truck attack in New Orleans that killed 14 people has been accused of trying to join the Islamic State group, federal prosecutors announced Friday.
Abdisatar Ahmed Hassan, 22, made his first court appearance on a charge of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
A 34-page complaint details the extensive lengths Hassan went to get to Somalia and fight with ISIS from social media posts to failed attempts to fly there.
Hassan was born in Kenya and lived in Texas before moving to Minnesota in 2023.
The criminal complaint against Hassan details several social posts dating back to May up until last week. That's when Investigators say Hassan posted a video of this knife on his lap.
On Wednesday, FBI agents say they observed Hassan driving while holding a black ISIS flag. He was arrested Thursday.
The charging documents also say police in New York notified the FBI last May that Hassan had made social media posts in support of the Somali group al-Shabab. An affidavit from an agent says investigators spotted al-Shabab and ISIS propaganda videos on his TikTok and Facebook accounts. It also alleges that he exchanged messages with a Facebook account that encourages Somali-speaking individuals to travel and fight on behalf of the Islamic State group.
FBI agents were watching when Hassan went to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Dec. 13, authorities say. He allegedly tried to check in for a flight to Somalia but left after an airline employee told him he lacked required travel documents.
He allegedly tried again on Dec. 29. Agents saw him board a flight to Chicago, where Customs and Border Protection officers interviewed him extensively before his scheduled flight to Ethiopia but did not detain him. He missed the flight and returned to Minneapolis, the affidavit says.
Hassan admitted in an interview that he started consuming ISIS propaganda after the start of the Israel-Hamas war.
Jaylani Hussein with the Council on American-Islamic Relations Minnesota says the community has made tremendous strides to reverse radicalization in the state.
In 2016, nine Minnesota men were sentenced on federal charges of conspiring to join the Islamic State group.
"The community has made significant gains, and this almost becomes a non-issue in Minnesota when, 10 years ago, it was a significant concern," Hussein said.
Hussein says the community has gained a lot of ground reversing radicalization, but the fight against radicalization is far from over.
"This is an important issue for our community. I just want to make sure Minnesotans know that we've made significant gains [and] those gains are the reason why we haven't really heard of this type of case," Hussein said.

Illinois man convicted for hate crime murder of Palestinian boy
1 MAR 2025
An Illinois landlord has been found guilty of murder and hate crime charges for fatally stabbing a Palestinian-American child in 2023 and severely wounding his mother.
Prosecutors said Joseph Czuba, 73, targeted the family over their Muslim faith following the Israel-Hamas war.
Police found six-year-old Wadea Al-Fayoume and his mother, Hanan Shaheen, with severe stab wounds inside a house she rented from Czuba in a Chicago suburb on 14 October, 2023. The boy later died in the hospital.
Czuba had pleaded not guilty, but jurors convicted him after deliberating for less than 90 minutes.
Warning: This story contains details some readers may find upsetting
After the verdict, the boy's father, Odai, told reporters in Arabic: "I don't know if I should be pleased or upset, if I should be crying or laughing."
"I feel like this decision came a little too late," he said.
Jurors heard testimony from a number of witnesses, including Al-Fayoume's mother.
Ms Shaheen testified that she rented rooms from Czuba in suburban Chicago, and had no problems with him at first.
But tensions escalated after Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October, 2023, with Czuba expressing anti-Muslim views and asking her to move out of the home, where he also lived.
A few days after that conversation, Czuba forced his way into her room and stabbed her with a knife more than a dozen times, Ms Shaheen testified.
"He told me 'You, as a Muslim, must die,'" she said.
After she retreated to call for help, Ms Shaheen said Czuba attacked her son. Prosecutors said the child had been stabbed 26 times. He died from the injuries shortly after the attack.
Police testified that they found Czuba outside the house after the attack, with blood on his body and hands.
Lawyers for Czuba defended him by arguing that pieces of evidence linking him to the crimes were missing. His ex-wife testified in the trial, and said he rarely had violent outbursts in their 30-year marriage.
But jurors found him guilty of the crimes after a short deliberation. Czuba faces life in prison without parole. Sentencing is scheduled for May.
The young boy had celebrated his sixth birthday just a few weeks before he was killed.
"He loved his family, his friends. He loved soccer, he loved basketball," the executive director of the Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Ahmed Rehab, said at the time.

Trump accuses Zelensky of 'gambling with World War Three'
1 MAR 2025
Donald Trump has clashed with Volodymyr Zelensky in a furious exchange at the White House, with the US president telling his Ukrainian counterpart to make a deal with Russia "or we are out".
The pair interrupted each other repeatedly in front of the media during what was supposed to be a prelude to the two leaders signing a minerals deal.
After relations first became strained over Trump's handling of Ukraine peace talks with Russia, the minerals agreement was supposed to be a stepping stone towards further security ties between the countries.
But Zelensky was told by the Americans to leave before the deal could be signed.
At one point, Trump told Zelensky he was not thankful enough for US military and political support, and that he was "gambling with World War Three".
Zelensky had earlier argued there should be "no compromises" with Russian President Vladimir Putin - but Trump said Kyiv would have to make concessions to reach a peace deal with Russia.
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and currently controls around 20% of Ukrainian territory.
The meeting to discuss the US-Ukraine deal, which involved access to Ukrainian oil, gas and rare minerals, came after the new US president appeared to blame Zelensky for the war and chided him for not starting peace talks with Russia earlier.
His tone had softened in recent days, with Trump saying he had "a lot of respect" for the Ukrainian leader.
But Friday's conversation soured after the US Vice-President JD Vance - who was sat alongside other politicians in the room - told Zelensky that the war had to be ended through diplomacy.
Zelensky responded by asking "what kind of diplomacy?", referencing a previous ceasefire deal in 2019, agreed three years before Russia's full-scale invasion when Moscow was supporting and arming separatist fighters in Ukraine's east.
The vice-president then accused Zelensky of being disrespectful and "litigating" the situation in front of the media.
From there, the discussion escalated quickly, as Trump and Vance accused Ukraine's president of being ungrateful for three years of US support during the war with Russia, with Trump saying Zelensky was in no position to tell the US how it should feel.
Not long after the meeting - and well ahead of the pre-planned schedule - Zelensky was seen leaving the White House in his official vehicle.
Trump took to Truth Social, the social media platform he owns, to say "Zelensky disrespected the US in its cherished Oval Office".
"I have determined that President Zelensky is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations," the Republican president continued. "I don't want advantage, I want PEACE."
Zelensky also posted on social media, thanking the president and the US four times.
In a later interview with Fox News, Zelensky said the public spat "was not good" - but the relationship between him and Trump could be salvaged.
"Because the relations are more than just two presidents," he said, adding that it was also about "strong relations between our two people."
Reaction to the White House meeting among US politicians appeared to fall along partisan lines, with Republicans praising Trump and Democrats criticising him.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham - once a staunch supporter of Ukraine - told reporters: "What I saw in the Oval Office was disrespectful and I don't know if we can ever do business with Zelensky again."
He said Zelensky "either needs to resign and send somebody over that we can do business with, or he needs to change".
Democratic House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries described Zelensky's treatment as "appalling", adding that it "will only serve to further embolden Vladimir Putin".
In Ukraine, there was broadly appreciation for Zelensky holding his ground over what is, for them, an existential war.
"Trump's administration was so arrogant," one man in Kyiv told the BBC. "When you look at Zelensky's face, you understand that the discussion behind the closed doors was not so polite.
"They are so rude, they don't respect the people of Ukraine. They even don't hide it."
The Oval Office spat also prompted words of support for Zelensky from key European allies, including France.
A spokeswoman for UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer - who has cast himself as a mediator between the US and Europe as the Trump administration adopts a more isolationist approach to the continent - said he had spoken to both leaders.
She said Sir Keir "retains unwavering support for Ukraine, and is doing all he can to find a path forward to a lasting peace".
Friedrich Merz, who is expected to become Germany's next chancellor, wrote that he stood with Ukraine "in good and testing times", adding: "We must never confuse aggressor and victim in this terrible war."
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said that "today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It's up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge".
Russia, meanwhile, said Trump and Vance had acted with restraint. A foreign ministry spokeswoman said it was a miracle the pair hadn't hit Zelensky.

Trump to order English as official US language
1 MAR 2025
Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Friday making English the official language of the United States, according to White House officials.
The US president is also expected to scrap requirements that federal agencies provide language services to non-English speakers.
The US has never had an official language in the nearly 250 years since the country was founded.
The order is intended to improve government efficiency and promote national unity, according to White House officials.
Nearly 68 million of the country's 340 million residents speak a language other than English, according to the US Census Bureau, which includes more than 160 Native American tongues.
Friday's executive order will roll back a policy from 2000 signed by former President Bill Clinton requiring government agencies and federal funding recipients to "ensure that their programs and activities normally provided in English are accessible to LEP (low-English proficiency) persons".
Agencies will still be allowed to provide that language access to non-English speakers, according to White House officials.
Republicans have led efforts in the past to label English as the country's official language, with members of the House as recently as 2021 introducing legislation on it that failed.
Those who opposed those efforts say that the country does not need an official language, pointing to the high numbers of people who speak it and to the country never having one, while also saying establishing one could promote discrimination against non-English speakers.
During his presidential campaign last year, Trump included non-English languages in his statements calling for stricter immigration policies.
"We have languages coming into our country. We don't have one instructor in our entire nation that can speak that language," he told a crowd of supporters in February 2024.
"It's the craziest thing - they have languages that nobody in this country has ever heard of. It's a very horrible thing," he said.
And during the 2016 campaign he said, "This is a country where we speak English. It's English. You have to speak English!"
When the US was founded, most residents spoke English and those writing the country's constitution did not feel it was necessary to enshrine it as the official language and also did not want to alienate fellow new citizens who spoke German or other languages, according to most scholars.
The languages currently spoken the most in the US after English are Spanish, various Chinese languages, Tagolog, Vietnamese and Arabic, according to the Census Bureau.
A further approximately one million people use American Sign Language, according to experts.
Approximately 180 countries around the world designate official national languages, and most countries recognise multiple official languages.
However, several countries besides the US do not have an official language, including the United Kingdom.
There are more than 30 US states which have designated English as the official language, while Alaska and Hawaii have also bestowed official status on several native languages.

He said since it not permissible to keep a dead Muslim in the morgue for a long time, something must be done to his/her burial without delay just like social interventions are also vital.
“IMC is a not-for-profit organisation, and It’s the umbrella body for Muslims and Muslim organisations on Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki Scheme 1 and Ibeju-Lekki areas of Lagos State. The organisation was established as an interventionist body to ensure the provision of Islamic social infrastructure that are concomitant to the practice of Islam.
“It is rather pathetic to note that such essential facilities as cemeteries, orphanages, women and children hospital, Halal recreation centers, etc, are either totally non-existent or inadequate in our local jurisdiction.
“This explains why we are embarking on an arduous task of raising N5 billion for the provision of such essential Islamic social infrastructure for the teeming Muslim population in the aforementioned axis.
“It’s an open secret that the ancient cemeteries on the island, such as Oke-Sunnah, Abari, and Ikoyi are already bursting at the seams. Unfortunately, too, the few highbrow cemeteries available hardly meet Islamic standards, quite apart from the fact that their charges are relatively exorbitant. In view of this ugly situation, we have made cemeteries our flagship project,” Ebiti added.
Corroborating him, the Vice-Chairman of the association, Alhaji Tijani Borodo said. “Island Muslim Community is an umbrella body for all Muslim organisations, for the Muslim Ummah at this Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ibeju-Lekki axis. That is what the IMC is all about, for us to provide a conducive atmosphere for living, for business and all other activities of human beings that comply with Sharia.”
On her part, Alhaja Sherifat Abiola-Andu said, “This is being a major project. One is a cemetery, the second is an orphanage and third is to have a hospital for Muslims. We are inevitably going to die but we don’t know where we are going to be buried. And right now there is paucity of cemetery for Muslims and we thought we want to gave a nice resting place and that is what is informing us to have this mega launch. We need a lot of money to make sure that we have enough resources to do that.”
Alhaji Ariyo Olushekun said, “We have some vital projects that we thought as a community we should work on. The ones that we have identified now are the cemetery, the orphanage and the hospital. As for the cemetery, we are working on three cemeteries; one in Ikorodu, one in Ibeju-Lekki abd another one in Akodo.”
In his remarks, Dr. Bashir Oshodi, who gave a brief analysis about why the intervention in the healthcare delivery system is pivotal in the mega project of the IMC, spoke about the need for a concentrated effort on a Muslim hospital, said, “27 percent of Nigerian kids have stunted growth. Why? Because they don’t have proper nutrition, they are not eating proper food. 20 to 15 million children are out of school.

High prices of food have made it difficult for us to prepare for Ramadan —Muslims
by Rukiyat Ogunwade
February 28, 2025
As Muslims all over the world prepare for the holy month of Ramadan, a number Muslims in the country have lamented that the skyrocketing prices of food items have made it difficult for them to prepare for Ramadan despite the announcement of a drop in food inflation by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
According to a report from the NBS, in this month of February, food inflation declined to 26.08 per cent from 39.84 percent recorded in December. Despite this statistic, Nigerians are still experiencing the high cost of food items sold in the market.
Ramadan is usually known for the excitement it brings to muslims when it is around the corner. Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, is a month of fasting widely considered as one of the most sacred times for Muslims in the world. It occurs annually and lasts for 29 to 30 days.
During Ramadan, Muslims observe a strict fast from dawn until sunset and they are not allowed to eat or drink during daylight hours. The fast is broken at the end of the day with prayer and a festive meal called Iftar.
Foods majorly eaten during Ramadan by Nigerian muslims include rice, beans, maize, garri, Semovita, yam flour, wheat, oats and millet.
Though prices of several food items have been on the high side since last year, and have continued to fluctuate, there is apprehension that prices of food items might increase even more now that Ramadan is about to begin.
In an interview with Nigerian Tribune, a muslim in Ibadan, Mrs Rofiat Usman, stated that with
Ramadan approaching food items have become too expensive, especially the major foodstuff that are needed during the month of Ramadan.
“Ramadan is approaching, but things have become too expensive, especially the major foodstuff that we need to sustain ourselves during the month of Ramadan.
“Rice, beans, Semovita, yam flour, garri, maize and millet are so expensive that I can barely afford to buy them .We are supposed to be excited as the month of Ramadan approaches, but the month is coming with mixed feelings because we are happy the holy month is here, but unhappy because there is no money to buy foodstuffs at home in preparation of the month of Ramadan.
Another muslim, Farouk Alabi, said that even if he could afford some food items, he was not sure if he could afford to give the needy food items during Ramadan this year as instructed by the holy prophet.
“Though I already bought little amount of food items home in preparation of the month, but may Allah forgive; I am not sure if I can feed the needy this year because I am also struggling to get enough food items for the month. I cannot even send enough money home to my aged mother in Osun in preparation for the month.”
In an interview with a trader at Molete market, Ibadan, Usama Sani stated that there has not been sales unlike it used to be when Ramadan is approaching.
He said, ”People are complaining about the high prices of food, so they only buy little quantity. For example, I have a customer who buys four measures ‘congos’ of rice and tow congos of beans in one week.
But he has now resorted to buying lesser amount of food items now; he buys four to five cups. Unlike before when we sold yam flour in congos, people now buy yam flour in cups, even for Semovita! That is the situation we find ourselves now. May God help us in this country.”
He explained further: “There has not been sales unlike before when Ramadan is approaching. We have been here all morning. I have only sold a few things since and I understand it’s because people don’t have enough money to buy food items in bulk and store at home.”
Sanni gave samples of the current prices of some food items. “For example,” he said, “a congo of yam flour is now N3,000 , a congo of garri costs N1,200; beans costs N2800 and a congo of rice sells for N3,000, a congo of millet is sold for N2,000.”
He added, “As at today, a 50kg bag of rice now sells between N80,000 and N82,000. A 100 kg bag of beans is sold for about N170,000, so what are we talking about? The prices of food items are still on the high side.”
He faulted the NBS report saying, “We can only talk about a real drop in prices of food when a bag of 50 kg rice is sold between N40,000 to N50,000.”
Also in an interview with Nigerian Tribune, a muslim cleric, Sodiq Abass, lamented that unlike before when he buys a fowl for his family to eat on the first day of a Ramadan, he could hardly afford to buy fish, pepper and other food items needed to sustain during the fasting period, saying that they are quite expensive.
“In the previous years, before things become as hard as this, I could afford a fowl for the first day of Ramadan.
“Now that a fowl now sells between N20,000 to N30,000, where am I going to get such? I can only afford to buy fish even though a mackerel fish is also sold between N2,500 to N3,000 depending on its size. We appeal to President Bola Tinubu to help find a lasting solution to this as we cannot continue this way. Things are too hard for us now. I don’t how I can successfully feed my family of six through this Ramadan.”

Somalia: ICRC Ramadan Assistance Supports Thousands of Detainees
28/02/2025,
Mogadishu (ICRC) – As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is launching its annual Ramadan assistance aimed to reach nearly 5,000 detainees across 16 places of detention across the country.
“Ramadan is a sacred time of reflection, compassion and community for Muslims worldwide and can be particularly challenging for those deprived of their freedom,” said Antoine Grand, the head of the ICRC in Somalia. “Supporting detainees during this period has become an annual tradition for the ICRC in Somalia and in many other countries — a gesture to ensure they do not feel left out.”
Over the next four weeks, the ICRC will distribute food to 16 places of detention. Each detainee will receive a package containing dates, milk powder, groundnuts, and biscuits while the detention facilities’ kitchens will be provided with sugar, tea leaves, lentils, tomato paste and vegetable oil. Additionally, the ICRC will distribute 512 goats across the locations. These items are a symbolic supplement to existing rations provided by detaining authorities.
Visiting detainees is a fundamental part of the ICRC’s work in Somalia and around the world. The organization has been carrying out visits to places of detention in Somalia since 1977. These visits ensure that the conditions of detention and treatment of detainees comply with Somali law and international standards. Last year, the ICRC conducted 51 visits across 16 places of detention. Health structures located in five places of detention were also supported by the ICRC with essential medicines and materials. The ICRC also conducted rehabilitation work in three places of detention.

Former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Maharazu Tsiga, has regained his freedom after spending 22 days in captivity.
A source confirmed to Channels Television on Friday night that Tsiga had been released and was currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital for security reasons.
Naija News recall that gunmen, led by notorious bandit kingpin Babaro, had initially demanded ₦250 million for Tsiga’s release. However, it remains unclear if any ransom was paid to secure his freedom.
Government, Security Agencies Yet To Comment
As of the time of filing this report, government officials and security agencies, including the Katsina State Police Command, were yet to comment on the circumstances surrounding Tsiga’s release.
The former NYSC DG was abducted on February 6, 2025, at his residence in Tsiga village, Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.
During the attack, two persons sustained injuries, while one of the gunmen was mistakenly shot dead by his own gang member.
The assailants also killed one person, while ransacking several homes and carting away valuables.
The attackers, numbering over 100, stormed the area, surrounding Tsiga’s residence before forcibly whisking him away.
Speaking on the incident, the lawmaker representing Bakori/Danja Federal Constituency, Abdullahi Balarabe Dabai, revealed that the gunmen systematically broke into homes before Tsiga confronted them.

Ethiopia and Somalia hold talks aimed at reaffirming ties
28 February 2025
Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was welcomed in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Thursday by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for talks aimed at reaffirming their ties.
Tensions between the neighbouring countries mounted last year after landlocked Ethiopia struck a deal to lease a stretch of coastline from Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland.
Ethiopia planned to build a naval base and commercial port there in exchange for possible recognition of Somaliland's independence.
Mogadishu was furious over the agreement, accusing Addis Ababa of undermining its territorial integrity.
Following talks mediated by Turkey in December, the two countries pledged to find an arrangement to allow Ethiopia access to and from the sea.
Mohamud then visited Ethiopia earlier in 2025.
Thursday’s discussions focused on a wide range of bilateral issues from trade to security as the two leaders attempt to normalise relations.
Moments before the Ethiopian leader landed, shells were fired in the Somali capital, but it is unclear if the attack was associated with his visit.
Somalia’s security situation is highly volatile with the Islamist al-Shabaab group active in the country.

Kurdish PKK militia says it will heed jailed leader’s peace call and declare ceasefire
March 01, 2025
The outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militia will heed its jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan’s call for disarmament and declare an immediate ceasefire, a news agency close to the group cited it as saying on Saturday, in a major step toward ending a 40-year conflict with the Turkish state.
The group said it hoped Ankara would release Ocalan, held in near total isolation since 1999, so he can lead a process of disarmament, adding that the necessary political and democratic conditions need to be established for the process to succeed.

New demand by Israel risks shaky Gaza truce
March 01, 2025
CAIRO: The fragile truce in Gaza was hanging by a thread on Friday after Israel demanded a six-week extension to the first phase of the deal.
The 42-day first stage of the ceasefire — under which Hamas released 33 Israeli hostages, more than 2,000 Palestinian prisoners were freed from Israeli jails and its forces partially withdrew from Gaza — ends on Saturday.
Talks on the second stage — the release of all remaining hostages and Israel’s complete military withdrawal from the Palestinian enclave — should have begun last month, but Egyptian security sources said on Friday that Israeli negotiators in Cairo were insisting on a further 42 days of the first stage.
Hamas opposes the extension and insists on proceeding to the second phase of the deal as originally agreed. “We call on the international community to pressure the occupation to... immediately enter the second phase of the agreement without any delay,” it said on Friday.
Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian also said on Friday that she would like the ceasefire phases to move ahead as originally planned. “I doubt anyone in Gaza will want to go back to war,” she said.
However, there is also no sign of consensus on Gaza’s future. That uncertainty is complicating efforts to negotiate a lasting resolution.
A hostage-prisoner swap early Thursday was the final one under the initial stage of the truce.
Hamas returned the bodies of four Israelis and 643 Palestinians were released from Israeli jails. Many were awaiting treatment on Friday at a hospital in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
Among those freed was Nael Barghouti, the longest-serving Palestinian prisoner who spent more than four decades behind bars. Another released prisoner, Yahya Shraideh, said: “We were in hell and we came out of hell.”

Lebanon PM demands ‘full Israeli withdrawal’
NAJIA HOUSSARI
February 28, 2025
BEIRUT: Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Friday called for a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the country, and promised residents of border villages a safe return home and reconstruction of their properties.
Salam was speaking during a visit to the border area amid a partial Israel withdrawal.
However, Israeli troops continue to occupy five strategic hills in the region, blocking the road connecting the border areas.
Salam said on Friday that the Lebanese army “is carrying out its responsibilities to the fullest, reinforcing its deployment with determination and resolve to uphold stability in the south and ensure the safe return of our people to their villages and homes.”
He said that “the army is the entity in charge of defending Lebanon and accordingly, it should preserve the country’s security, protect its people, and safeguard its sovereignty and the unity and security of its territory.”
After his government won a confidence vote in parliament this week, Salam visited the army’s barracks in Tyre and Marjayoun, as well as Khiam and Nabatieh.
Ministers and Maj. Gen. Hassan Aoude, the acting army commander, accompanied the prime minister.
The visit came hours after Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz claimed in a statement that “Israel has received a green light from the US to stay in the buffer zone in southern Lebanon.”
He said that “our forces will stay indefinitely in the buffer zone, south of Lebanon.”
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the Israeli defense minister’s claims, saying that “the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon clearly stipulates that Israel must withdraw from the south, including the five strategic points.”
Salam was taken to the Benoit Barakat Barracks in Tyre by military helicopter.
The Lebanese PM and his delegation held a meeting at the sector’s headquarters with Brig. Gen. Edgar Lawandos, commander of the southern Litani sector in the Lebanese army.
Salam said that the government “is committed to supporting the Lebanese army, by expanding its manpower, upgrading its equipment and training, and improving service conditions, to enhance its defensive capabilities.”
He also condemned “any attack on UNIFIL,” in light of the Feb. 15 violence on the Beirut Airport road.
Protesters — angered by the denial of landing clearance for an Iranian plane — attacked a UNIFIL convoy heading to the airport, injuring the deputy commander and his escort, who were both taken to the hospital.
Salam said that “firm action” will be taken to arrest and hold those responsible to account.
“We are taking all necessary measures to ensure it does not recur,” he said.
Salam commended UNIFIL’s role as a peacekeeping force in Lebanon and the south since 1978, with “many of its members sacrificing their lives to fulfill its mission.”
He praised UNIFIL’s “close cooperation with the army and Lebanese authorities to implement UN Resolution 1701, to enhance the security and stability of Lebanon and the south.”
On Thursday, the Government Commissioner at the Military Court, Judge Fadi Akiki, charged 20 people, including four detainees and two minors, with involvement in the attack on the UNIFIL convoy.
The charges included “attempted murder of the convoy’s members by burning the vehicle, assaulting the security forces and forming a group to undermine the authority and steal money worth $29,000 that was in the wallet of the UNIFIL deputy commander who was leaving Lebanon and returning to his country at the end of his mission.”
Following his visit to the military barracks, Salam met with a delegation from the border town of Dhayra.
Residents staged a protest outside the barracks to voice their suffering to the prime minister over the Israeli forces’ incursions into their lands, especially the destroyed southern neighborhood.
Salam promised the delegation that ministers will work to ensure “a safe return to your homes as soon as possible, and a commitment to the reconstruction process for the residents to return with dignity.”
He said: “Before receiving the confidence vote, the government started to mobilize all Arab and international support to force the enemy to withdraw from our lands and the so-called five points; There is no real and sustainable stability without Israel’s complete withdrawal.”
From Khiam, where he surveyed the Israeli destruction, Salam said: “We will only accept the complete withdrawal of the enemy from Lebanon, as Israel has repeatedly violated our sovereignty and land.”
In Nabatieh, several protesters criticized the prime minister for failing to thank “the resistance and only expressing gratitude to the army in the south.”
Another protester questioned “the possibility of reclaiming the occupied hills through dialogue.”
Salam’s visit to the south coincided with further Israeli airspace violations over Lebanon, as Hezbollah held funerals for 130 people, including party fighters and civilians killed in Israeli airstrikes during the recent war.
Trucks carried dozens of coffins along the road to the towns of Aitaroun and Aita Al-Shaab on Friday.
Israeli forces stationed at border positions, meanwhile, carried out intensive patrol operations toward the outskirts of Aitaroun ahead of the funerals.
Israeli violations also extended to the Bekaa, with aircraft flying at low altitude over Baalbek and northern Bekaa.
On Thursday, airstrikes targeted a Hezbollah official and another person in a pickup truck in the city of Hermel, killing both.
Later, Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee said that one of the victims was “Mohammed Mahdi Ali Shahin, a Hezbollah operative responsible for acquiring combat equipment along the Syrian-Lebanese border since the Israel-Lebanon agreements came into effect.”
He added: “Shahin was one of the key members of Hezbollah’s geographical unit overseeing Lebanon’s Bekaa region, which has recently been focused on transferring combat equipment from Syria to Lebanon.”

Israeli PM Netanyahu to hold security meeting after delegation returns from Cairo
March 01, 2025
CAIRO/JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was due to hold consultations with security chiefs and ministers on Friday after an Israeli delegation returned from Cairo with no agreement on extending the Gaza ceasefire, two Israeli officials said.
A Hamas official confirmed that Israel had sought to extend the 42-day truce agreed as a first stage in the ceasefire agreement through the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which begins this weekend. But he said Hamas wanted to move on to negotiations over the second stage, opening the way to a permanent end to the war.
“We are committed to the agreement,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Egyptian and Qatari mediators asked for some time over the next few days to resolve the impasse over the ceasefire, which is due to expire on Saturday, the officials said.
The agreement reached last month halted 15 months of fighting, allowing the exchange of 33 Israeli hostages and five Thais for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees and was meant to lead to subsequent talks to build on the truce.
Israeli officials have previously said Israel was ready to resume fighting in Gaza if all its remaining hostages are not returned.
However, Israel and Hamas remain far apart on key issues and each has accused the other of violating the ceasefire, casting doubt over the second phase of the deal meant to include releases of additional hostages and prisoners as well as steps toward a permanent end of the war.
There is no sign of agreement, either among or between Israelis and Palestinians, or between Western and Arab governments, over Gaza’s future. That uncertainty is complicating efforts to negotiate a lasting resolution.
Hamas called on Friday for the international community to press Israel to immediately enter the second phase without delay. It is unclear what will happen if the first phase ends on Saturday without a deal.
A senior official of the Palestinian Authority, State Minister of Foreign Affairs Varsen Aghabekian, also said on Friday that she would like the ceasefire phases to move ahead as originally planned.
“I doubt anyone in Gaza will want to go back to war,” she said in Geneva.
The Cairo talks are being mediated by Egypt and Qatar with US support. US President Donald Trump said on Thursday there were “pretty good talks going on.”
Asked whether the ceasefire deal would move into the second phase, Trump said: “Nobody really knows, but we’ll see what happens.”
The Gaza war is the latest confrontation in decades of conflict between Israel and Palestinians.
It began on Oct. 7, 2023, when fighters from the Islamist group Hamas stormed border defenses from Gaza and attacked Israeli communities, killing around 1,200 people and seizing 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.
The Israeli military campaign in retaliation has killed more than 48,000 people, according to Palestinian authorities, while destroying large swathes of the tiny, crowded territory and leaving most of its 2 million inhabitants homeless.
CEASEFIRE
The ceasefire has mostly held during its first six weeks, although both sides have accused each other of breaches, particularly in the treatment of Israeli hostages and Palestinian detainees, and in the handling of releases.
The United Nations has described images of both emaciated Israeli hostages and released Palestinian detainees as distressing, saying they reflected the dire conditions in which they were held.
Hamas has staged shows of strength during hostage releases, parading them in front of cameras. Israeli authorities have made released detainees wear clothes bearing pro-Israeli slogans.
Israel is now negotiating to extend the first phase of the ceasefire deal by 42 days, according to the Egyptian security sources.
Israeli government officials said earlier this week that Israel would attempt to extend the initial phase with Hamas freeing three hostages a week in return for the release of Palestinian detainees.
Discussions on an end to the war are complicated by the lack of any agreement over basic questions such as how Gaza would be governed, how its security would be managed, how it could be rebuilt, and who would pay for that.
Trump proposed this month that the US should take over Gaza and redevelop it as a “Riviera of the Middle East” with its population displaced into Egypt and Jordan.
Arab countries have rejected that idea but have yet to announce their own plan.
European countries have also rejected the displacement of Palestinians and say they still support a two-state solution to the conflict.

Arab unity on Gaza will help ‘guide the path forward,’ UN chief says ahead of Cairo summit
EPHREM KOSSAIFY
February 28, 2025
NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for the Arab world to show unity ahead of a major summit next week to discuss the rebuilding of Gaza, which he said has become “a nexus of death, displacement, hunger, and disease” following 15 months of Israeli military action in the enclave.
A unified response among Arab nations “will help guide the way forward” in efforts to bring stability to the region, he said.
The UN chief will attend the Extraordinary Summit of the League of Arab States in Cairo next Tuesday.
Speaking ahead of the conference, Guterres reiterated the UN’s rejection of any ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and emphasized the need to establish a unified Palestinian government that enjoys the support of its people.
“There must be no long-term Israeli military presence in Gaza, and any transitional arrangements should aim to achieve a unified Palestinian government,” he said.
Guterres also called for urgent de-escalation in the West Bank, urging an end to settlement expansion and violence against civilians.
The UN secretary-general reiterated his call for a two-state solution, underscoring the need for Israel and Palestine to coexist peacefully in accordance with international law.
“The Palestinian people must have the right to govern themselves, chart their own future, and live in freedom and security,” he said, stressing that the only path to lasting peace is through a negotiated two-state solution with Jerusalem as the capital of both states.
In Cairo, Guterres is expected to outline these key priorities to leaders from across the Arab world, calling for unified action to bring stability to the region.
“Their unified position will help guide the way forward,” he said.
The Cairo summit represents a critical moment for international diplomacy as efforts intensify to secure a lasting resolution to the Gaza crisis and lay the groundwork for future peace in the region, amid a fragile ceasefire.
Since the Hamas attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, Gaza has experienced unprecedented destruction.
“Hospitals, schools, and water facilities have been destroyed and reduced to rubble,” Guterres said. He warned that “the risk of further destruction looms over the population.”
The UN chief urged all parties involved in the ceasefire and hostage deal to uphold their commitments.
“The parties must spare no effort to avoid a breakdown of this deal,” Guterres said. “The coming days are critical,” he warned, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safe, dignified, and unconditional release of hostages, alongside the continued flow of humanitarian aid to those in desperate need.
He called for the humanitarian lifeline to remain open and for continued support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.
Since the temporary ceasefire was brokered, humanitarian agencies have managed to scale up operations in Gaza, delivering essential aid, food, water, and medical supplies.
“With the right conditions and access, we can do far more,” Guterres said.
However, the UN chief made it clear that ending the immediate humanitarian crisis is only the first step.
He called for a comprehensive political framework to address Gaza’s long-term recovery, which must be grounded in international law and ensure the preservation of Palestinian sovereignty.
Guterres also called for tangible steps toward peace and stability, based on “clear principles.”
“This means staying true to the bedrock of international law,” he said. “It means preventing any form of ethnic cleansing. It means there should be no long-term Israeli military presence in Gaza.
“It means addressing Israel’s legitimate security concerns. It means accountability for violations of international law.”

Israel lobbies US to keep Russian bases in a ‘weak’ Syria, sources say
February 28, 2025
BEIRUT/WASHINGTON: Israel is lobbying the United States to keep the Syrian Arab Republic weak and decentralized, including by letting Russia keep its military bases there to counter Turkiye’s growing influence in the country, four sources familiar with the efforts said.
Turkiye’s often fraught ties with Israel have come under severe strain during the Gaza war and Israeli officials have told Washington that Syria’s new Islamist rulers, who are backed by Ankara, pose a threat to Israel’s borders, the sources said.
The lobbying points to a concerted Israeli campaign to influence US policy at a critical juncture for Syria, as the Islamists who ousted Bashar Assad try to stabilize the fractured state and get Washington to lift punishing sanctions.
Israel communicated its views to top US officials during meetings in Washington in February and subsequent meetings in Israel with US Congressional representatives, three US sources and another person familiar with the contacts said.
The main points were also circulated to some senior US officials in an Israeli “white paper,” two of the sources said.
All the sources spoke on condition of anonymity due to diplomatic sensitivities.
“Israel’s big fear is that Turkiye comes in and protects this new Syrian Islamist order, which then ends up being a base for Hamas and other militants,” said Aron Lund, a fellow at US-based think-tank Century International.
The US State Department and National Security Council did not provide a response to questions for this story. The office of Israel’s prime minister and the foreign ministries in Syria and Turkiye did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
It was not clear to what extent US President Donald Trump’s administration is considering adopting Israel’s proposals, the sources said. It has said little about Syria, leaving uncertainty over both the future of the sanctions and whether US forces deployed in the northeast will remain.
Lund said Israel had a good chance of influencing US thinking, describing the new administration as wildly pro-Israeli. “Syria is barely even on Trump’s radar now. It’s low priority, and there’s a policy void to fill,” he said.
ISRAELI ATTACKS
Israel has publicly declared its mistrust of Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), the Islamist faction that led the campaign that toppled Assad and which emerged from a group that was affiliated to Al-Qaeda until it cut ties in 2016.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel will not tolerate the presence in southern Syria of HTS, or any other forces affiliated with the new rulers, and demanded the territory be demilitarised.
Following Assad’s ouster, Israel carried out extensive airstrikes on Syrian military bases and moved forces into a UN-monitored demilitarised zone within Syria. Earlier this week, Israel struck military sites south of Damascus.
Now, Israel is deeply concerned about Turkiye’s role as a close ally of Syria’s new rulers, three US sources said, describing the messages delivered by Israeli officials.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, who leads the Islamist-rooted AK Party, said last year that Islamic countries should form an alliance against what he called “the growing threat of expansionism” from Israel.
Earlier this month, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Israel was concerned Turkiye was supporting efforts by Iran to rebuild Hezbollah and that Islamist groups in Syria were creating another front against Israel.
Turkiye has said it wants Syria to become stable and pose no threat to its neighbors. It has repeatedly said Israel’s actions in southern Syria were part of its expansionist and invasive policy, and showed Israel did not want regional peace.
To contain Turkiye, Israeli officials have sought to persuade US officials that Russia should keep its Mediterranean naval base in Syria’s Tartus province and its Hmeimim air base in Latakia province, the sources said.
When Israeli officials presented Russia’s continued presence in a positive light in a meeting with US officials, some attendees were surprised, arguing that Turkiye — a NATO member — would be a better guarantor of Israel’s security, two of the US sources said.
Israeli officials were “adamant” that was not the case, the sources said.
Syria’s new leadership is in talks with Russia over the fate of the military bases.
SERIOUS THREAT
Syria’s Islamist-led government has sought to reassure Western and Arab states about its intentions, promising an inclusive Syria and seeking to restore diplomatic ties with governments that shunned Assad.
Syria’s leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa told a group of foreign journalists in December that Damascus did not want conflict with Israel or other countries.
Israeli officials, however, voiced concern to US officials that the new government could pose a serious threat and that Syria’s new armed forces might one day attack, the sources said.
Assad kept the frontier with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights quiet for years despite his alliance with Israel’s arch-foe Iran, which had a dominant role in Syria until his downfall upended the Middle East’s power balance.
Two sources said that in the final weeks of US President Joe Biden’s term, his administration considered offering sanctions relief to Syria’s new leaders in exchange for closing Russia’s two military bases.
Two former US officials under the Biden administration did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The sources said Biden’s team failed to secure a deal before Trump took office on January 20 and that they expected the new US president, who has drawn closer to Russian President Vladimir Putin, to be more open to Russia staying.
Israel’s lobbying to keep Syria weak points to a starkly different approach to other US-allied states in the region, notably Saudi Arabia, which said last month it was talking to Washington and Brussels to help lift Western sanctions.
A source in Erdogan’s AK party said Ankara hosted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday in part as a hedge against the uncertainty of the new US policy in Syria, and to balance any Israeli measures there — including with the US — that threaten Turkish interests.

Detained Tunisian opponents demand public trial in ‘plot against state’ case
February 28, 2025
TUNIS: Several jailed Tunisian opposition figures demanded a public trial, their relatives and lawyers said Thursday on their behalf at a press conference.
Around 40 people — including prominent politicians, lawyers, and media personalities — are facing charges of “conspiracy against internal and external state security” and “belonging a terrorist group.”
A number were detained in a wave of arrests in February 2023, after President Kais Saied had dubbed them “terrorists.”
With the trial set to begin on March 4, judicial authorities have scheduled a remote hearing for eight of the defendants, which their lawyers and relatives said was unfair.
They include politician Jawhar Ben Mbarek, Islamist-inspired Ennahdha party leader Abdelhamid Jelassi, and Issam Chebbi, a leader of the opposition National Salvation Front.
“We want a public trial, neither remote nor behind closed doors,” Ben Mbarek wrote in a letter read by his father, leftist activist Ezzeddine Hazgui, at the press briefing in Tunis.
“We are certain of our innocence, and if the regime shuts the courtroom doors to the public, it’s because they are ashamed of their fabricated case,” he added, denouncing what he said was “judicial harassment” against politicians, unionists and activists.
Ridha BelHajj, a former minister also detained, echoed the demand for a transparent hearing.
“Our trial on March 4 must be public, with our physical presence in court, and open to the press and people to guarantee fairness,” he wrote.
Lawyer Dalila Msaddek, from the detainees’ defense committee, said that while many are in custody, some remain free pending trial, while others have fled abroad.
The case has also named Bochra BelHajj Hmida, a former member of parliament and human rights activist now living in France, along with National Salvation Front coalition leader Ahmed Nejib Chebbi and lawyer Ayachi Hammami, both prominent critics of President Kais Saied.

US aid cuts force UNICEF to reduce Lebanon nutrition programs, official says
February 28, 2025
GENEVA: US aid cuts have forced the UN children’s agency UNICEF to suspend or scale back many programs in Lebanon, with more than half of children under the age of two experiencing severe food poverty in the country’s east, a UNICEF official said on Friday.
“We have been forced to suspend or cut back or drastically reduce many of our programs and that includes nutrition programs,” UNICEF’s deputy representative in Lebanon, Ettie Higgins, told reporters in Geneva via video link from Beirut.
More than double the number of children faced food shortages in the eastern Bekaa and Baalbek regions of the country compared to two years ago, according to a UNICEF report that studied the impact of 14 months of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel that began in October 2023.
“The assessment revealed a grim picture of children’s nutrition situation, particularly in the Baalbeck and Bekaa governorates, which remained densely populated when they were repeatedly targeted by air strikes,” said Higgins.
Nearly 80 percent of families were in need of urgent support and 31 percent of households did not have enough drinking water, putting them at risk of disease, the report found.
UNICEF raised alarm about the impact of US aid cuts and a broader decline in global humanitarian funding.
“More than half a million children and their families (in Lebanon) risk losing critical cash support from UN agencies this month. These cuts would strip the most vulnerable of their last lifeline, leaving them unable to afford even the most basic necessities,” Higgins added.
Only 26 percent of UNICEF’s 2025 Lebanon appeal is funded.
A ceasefire ended the conflict in Lebanon in November, which began when Hezbollah opened fire on Israel on October 8, 2023 in support of its Palestinian ally Hamas. Some 3,800 people were killed and more than a million people were displaced by Israeli air strikes in Lebanon, while tens of thousands of Israelis were displaced in northern Israel.
President Donald Trump ordered a 90-day pause on all foreign aid in January to carry out a review to ensure all the projects were aligned with his “America First” policy. On Wednesday his administration said it was cutting more than 90 percent of the US Agency for International Development’s aid contracts.

Kurdish militants in Iraq, Syria must lay down weapons, Erdogan’s party says
February 28, 2025
ANKARA: All Kurdish militants in Iraq and Syria, including US-allied Syrian Kurdish forces, must lay down their weapons after the peace call from the jailed leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), Turkiye’s ruling AK Party said on Friday.
Thursday’s call from PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan for the group to disarm and disband could potentially lead to ending a 40-year conflict and have far-reaching political and security consequences for the region.
The PKK has not yet reacted to the call, but the Syrian Kurdish YPG, the spearhead of a key US ally against Daesh in Syria that Ankara views as an extension of the PKK, has said Ocalan’s message did not apply to them.
Speaking to reporters in Istanbul, AK Party spokesman Omer Celik said the call would advance the government’s ambitions of a “terror-free Turkiye” if heeded, but added that there would be no negotiating or bargaining with the PKK.
“Regardless of what name it uses, the terrorist organization must lay down its weapons and disarm itself, along with all its elements and extensions in Iraq and Syria,” Celik said.
The PKK launched its insurgency against the Turkish state in 1984 and is now based in the mountains of northern Iraq. It is designated a terrorist organization by Turkiye, the United States and European Union. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
Ankara has repeatedly called on the YPG to disarm since the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad last year, warning that it would face military action otherwise.
Ocalan’s call, prompted by a surprise proposal
last October from an ultra-nationalist ally of the Turkish president, has been
welcomed by the United States, European Union, and other Western allies, as well as Turkiye’s neighbors Iraq and Iran.

BERNAMA
01-03- 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will hold Ihya’ Ramadan programme across ministries throughout this holy month, said his senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah.
The programme aims to make Ramadan a spiritual ‘madrasah’, not only in terms of worship but also in promoting values and ethics in national administration.
Tunku Nashrul said the Prime Minister would visit various ministries to engage with civil servants, followed by brief religious talks delivered by himself and invited speakers.
“Through this programme, values such as honesty, discipline and responsibility can be strengthened among civil servants, in line with the Well-being pillar under the MADANI framework,” he said during the Daily Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Briefing, which was streamed live on Anwar’s and PMO’s official Facebook pages today.
Tunku Nashrul said the Prime Minister has also agreed to visit several states during Ramadan to enhance cooperation between the federal and state governments, in addition to meeting the people at MADANI Iftar gatherings.
The specific dates and location for these events would be announced soon through official government channels, he added.
He said the PMO also encouraged public participation in these gatherings as a symbol of unity and togetherness.
“As a responsible government, the PMO believes that clear communication, transparency in administration and the strengthening of spiritual values are essential elements in building trust between the people and the government.

EPF declares 6.3pc dividend for both conventional, Shariah savings in 2024
By Malay Mail
01 Mar 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 — The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) board today announced a dividend rate of 6.30 per cent for Simpanan Konvensional, with a total payout of RM63.05 billion, and 6.30 per cent for Simpanan Shariah, with a total payout of RM10.19 billion.
This brings the total payout amount for 2024 to RM73.24 billion, benefiting over 16 million members, the retirement savings fund said in a statement today.
For the year ended Dec 31, 2024, the EPF recorded a total investment income of RM74.46 billion, up 11 per cent from the RM66.99 billion recorded in 2023. The amount is net of listed equity write downs recorded for the year.
Its investment assets grew to RM1,249.71 billion, an increase of 10 per cent from RM1,135.82 billion in 2023.
“This increase was driven by portfolio income and net contributions of RM108.22 billion, an 11 per cent increase from RM97.56 billion in 2023,” it said.
Chairman Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali said the EPF is pleased to announce higher dividends for 2024, driven by recovering global and domestic markets, resilient economic growth, and sound portfolio management.
“Our diversified investment strategy allowed us to capitalise on growth opportunities, optimise returns, and reinforce the long-term financial security of our members.
“Domestically, strong investments, a healthy labour market, and stable inflation boosted demand; while exports benefited from global stability and the tech upcycle,” he said.
He noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, government initiatives under Budget 2024 and strategic plans under the MADANI Economy framework have attracted foreign investments, creating a supportive environment for economic growth.
The statement highlighted the Malaysian economy’s 5.1 per cent growth last year (2023: 3.6 per cent), adding that the stock market demonstrating notable strength.
It also noted that the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) registered double-digit growth of 12.9 per cent (2023: -2.7 per cent) and peaked at 1,678.80 points in August, the highest level since December 2020.
“Global performance meanwhile was mixed, reflecting diverse economic conditions across regions. Central banks worldwide maintained relatively high interest rates to curb inflationary pressures from previous years. While higher rates typically weigh on equity valuations, they also provided opportunities for fixed-income investments, leading to a mixed impact on stock markets,” the fund said.
According to Mohd Zuki, the market volatility experienced in 2024 underscored the importance of the EPF’s Strategic Asset Allocation (SAA) in navigating challenging economic conditions.
“The SAA has been pivotal in maintaining steady portfolio performance, ensuring the long term resilience of the EPF’s investment portfolio. By balancing risk and return, this approach not only safeguards the fund against market uncertainties but also supports sustainable dividend payouts for our members,” he said.
Steady membership growth reflects EPF’s expanding coverage
The EPF recorded strong membership growth, in line with the strength of the Malaysian labour market.
It said new member registrations reached 475,752, bringing its membership to 16.22 million, of which 8.78 million were active members, representing 51 per cent of Malaysia’s 17.32 million labour force.
The active-to-inactive member ratio also improved in 2024 to 54:46.
“The increase in active members was driven by the EPF’s ongoing efforts to expand coverage,” it said.
Mohd Zuki emphasised that by broadening its reach, the EPF is strengthening social protection and retirement security, fostering greater inclusivity and resilience.
Furthermore, the EPF’s Outreach Programme recorded encouraging growth of voluntary contributors to 1,193,396, a 32 per cent increase from 902,213 in 2023, he added.
The i-Saraan programme saw a strong uptake in 2024. Participation increased 38 per cent to 529,667 from 383,082 in 2023, enabling more informal sector workers to save for retirement.
Total i-Saraan contributions also saw significant growth, rising by 83 per cent from RM1.44 billion in 2023 to RM2.64 billion last year.
The EPF said total contributions in 2024 rose 11 per cent to RM108.22 billion, reflecting increased number of members, wage growth and sustained trust in the EPF.
New employer registrations stood at 71,471, bringing total registered employers to 614,563, the statement said.
Outlook for 2025
The EPF said the investment environment is facing heightened risks from geopolitics, tariffs and trade wars, non-tariff barriers, climate, inflation and technological disruptions.
It said global economic output and central bank policies will be impacted from changing trade patterns and a move away from multilateralism.
“Malaysia’s economy is projected to remain resilient, supported by strong domestic demand, investment growth, and sustained exports,” it added.
Mohd Zuki reaffirmed the EPF’s commitment to sustainable growth, guided by its SAA.
Fixed income instruments will continue to anchor the portfolio, providing stability, while domestic equities will play a key role in generating returns., he said
“The EPF’s commitment is to deliver strong and consistent returns while maintaining its role as a trusted retirement savings institution. As the economy evolves, we carefully manage risks to ensure both short-term gains and long-term stability, allowing us to offer fair and competitive dividends to over 16 million members,” he said. — Bernama

PRESMA president Datuk Jawahar Ali Taib Khan said the effort was aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle among the people.

Na’im: State fatwa councils to decide ‘zakat fitrah’ rates following rice adulteration discovery
28 Feb 2025
PETALING JAYA, Feb 28 — The setting of "zakat fitrah” (personal tithe) rate based on rice grades will be decided by the Fatwa Committee and the Islamic Religious Council of the respective states, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.
He said this followed the recent findings of imported rice mixed with local white rice.
The minister told this to reporters after the presentation of the Malaysia Book Of Records certificate and the launch of a new product under the Ayam Pak Gembus label here last night.
Last Wednesday, it was reported that the Biotechnology and Nanotechnology Research Centre of the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) found about 50 per cent of the 5,000 samples of imported rice seized by the authorities were mixed with local white rice.
A check by Bernama at the portal of the Mufti of the Federal Territory’s office found that the rate set for zakat fitrah in Malaysia is based on decisions made during the 57th National Muzakarah Committee dated June 10, 2003.
The decision is that the amount for zakat fitrah for states in Peninsular Malaysia is according to the local price of BERNAS Super Tempatan Grade A rice according to Baghdad’s measurement of one gantang, which is equivalent to 2.60 kg.
For states in Sabah and Sarawak, it is 2.70 kg. — Bernama

Anwar praises Pahang Sultan’s wisdom, says PAS can no longer exploit Najib’s house arrest issue
By Malay Mail
01 Mar 2025
SHAH ALAM, March 1 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reportedly lauded the Pahang ruler for putting a stop to the political debates surrounding Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s house arrest addendum.
The prime minister said with Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah putting his foot down, Islamist party PAS has been left with no political ammunition against the government.
“The wisdom of the Sultan of Pahang led to the failure of their attempt to exploit the addendum case.
“He emphasised that the addendum should follow the legal process. PAS’ strategy collapsed," he told the Selangor PKR divisions annual general meetings yesterday.
Anwar also accused PAS of attempting to be the warrior for Najib.
Speaking at the Himpunan Pahang Bermunajat Raja Berdaulat gathering at the Sultan Ahmad 1 State Mosque on Thursday, the Sultan of Pahang had called for restraint to prevent unnecessary confusion and disputes.
He urged the public and stakeholders to respect established laws and procedures rather than engage in speculation or debate that could fuel misunderstandings.
In February 2024, the Federal Territories Pardons Board — chaired by Al-Sultan Abdullah — halved Najib’s sentence from his SRC International trial conviction to six years.
Najib subsequently claimed that Al-Sultan Abdullah had also issued a “royal addendum” for him to serve the remaining sentence under house arrest.
While the existence of the royal addendum has yet to be officially confirmed, Najib’s legal team produced a letter from the comptroller of the Pahang royal household that Al-Sultan Abdullah, who was the 16th Yang diPertuan Agong when he chaired the meeting on Najib’s pardon, had issued such an order.

Jakim: After revocation, imports of products certified by three halal bodies from China, Croatia and France banned
01 Mar 2025
KUALA KANGSAR, March 1 — Products certified halal by three foreign halal certification bodies whose recognition was revoked by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) are prohibited from entering Malaysia from the date of the revocation.
JAKIM director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said the ban will remain in effect until the three bodies rectify their shortcomings and implement improvements as required by JAKIM.
“Products that entered Malaysia prior to the revocation are not a cause for concern. However, if necessary, we will collaborate with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) to withdraw them from the market,” he told reporters after launching the MADANI JAKIM Adopted Village programme at Kampung Menora in Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Menora here yesterday.
“The certification bodies have been given time to make the necessary improvements and corrections, which will then be reassessed by JAKIM before any decision on reinstating recognition is made,” he added.
On Thursday, the media reported that JAKIM had updated the list of recognised foreign halal certification bodies, revoking the recognition of three bodies and announcing changes to the halal logos of Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia.
The three certification bodies whose recognition was revoked are the China Islamic Association (CIA) from China, the Centre for Halal Quality Certification (CHQC) from Croatia, and the Ritual Association of Lyon’s Great Mosque (ARGML) from France. — Bernama
