Ministry Of I&B Issues Notice To Hindi Media Channels Not To Use Urdu Words In Their Shows.

-----------
On September 18, 2025, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) issued a notice to Hindi media channels, instructing them not to use Urdu words in their shows.
The MIB issued this notice following a complaint filed on September 9, 2025, by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, S.K. Shrivastava, a resident of Thane (Maharashtra), on the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) portal. In his complaint, Shrivastava alleged that Hindi news channels like TV9 Bharatvarsh, Aaj Tak, ABP News, Zee News and TV18 were using nearly 30% Urdu vocabulary in their broadcasts.
The complainant further stated that although these channels claim to be Hindi news channels, they routinely use words from other languages in their daily coverage, which he described as ‘fraud’ against the public and a criminal act. He demanded that these channels be instructed to appoint certified Hindi language experts and to publish the expert’s certification on their respective websites.
Ironically, the five-line notice issued by MIB in response to the complaint itself used at least five Urdu-origin words: terms rooted in Arabic and Persian but now integrated into Hindi through Urdu. These included words like ‘Gaur’, ‘Galat’, ‘Istemaal’, ‘Khilaaf’, ‘Shikaayat’ and ‘Tahat’— all of which, in their current usage, are considered part of the shared Urdu-Hindi lexicon.
The first word, ‘Gaur’, is of Persian origin and in Hindi, corresponds to ‘Dhyan’ (attention) or ‘Soch-Vichar’ (contemplation).
The second word, ‘Galat’, comes from Arabic and has Hindi equivalents such as ‘Ashudh’ (impure), ‘Anuchit’ (inappropriate), ‘Asatya’ (falsehood), ‘Dosh’ (fault), ‘Truti’ (error), and ‘Pramad’ (mistake).
The third word, ‘Istemaal’, is also of Arabic origin, having entered Hindi through Urdu. It has now become firmly rooted in everyday usage. Hindi does have its own native word for it – ‘Prayog’ (use) – but ‘Istemaal’ is far more common in spoken language, while ‘Prayog’ tends to appear more in writing.
The fourth word, ‘Khilaaf’, is of Persian origin and translates into Hindi as ‘Viruddh’, ‘Pratikool’, or ‘Ulta’ – words that convey opposition or being contrary. Sometimes, ‘Vipreet’ is also used in Hindi to express contrariness or adverseness. However, despite being available in the lexicon, these Hindi words are rarely used in common speech.
The fifth word, ‘Shikaayat’, is originally Persian and has been absorbed into both Hindi and Urdu under the influence of Arabic and Persian. In Hindi, it can be used to express ‘Asantosh’ (dissatisfaction), ‘Dukh’ (grief), or ‘Ulaahnaa’ (reproach). Its close synonyms include ‘Shikvaa’, ‘Gilaa’ and ‘Fariyaad’— all of which also trace their roots back to Arabic-Persian usage.
The sixth word, ‘Tahat’, is of Arabic origin. In Hindi, it means ‘Ke Niche’ (beneath) or ‘Ke Antargat’ (under the purview of). Grammatically, it is an Arabic preposition that denotes being below something or under someone’s authority.
It is worth noting that the debate around the use of Urdu words in Hindi, or even the very existence of the Urdu language, is far from new. It dates back to the period when Scottish linguist John Gilchrist established Fort William College in Calcutta and formally separated the Nagari and Urdu scripts into distinct linguistic categories.
Later, with the transfer of power in 1947, Urdu came to be seen exclusively as the language of Muslims in India. As a result, Urdu gradually receded from the academic and institutional mainstream in post-British India. However, in everyday speech, Urdu vocabulary has continued to be widely used, much like it was in British India and earlier.
In fact, one could argue that in present times, the usage of Arabic-Persian-origin Urdu words in Hindi has only grown more pronounced.
In post-British India, the continued use of Urdu words in Hindi has sparked multiple controversies. These disputes even reached the courts, and in every instance, the verdict upheld Urdu’s rightful place, affirming that it is not the language of Muslims alone, but a language of Hindustan itself.
This very position was reiterated in the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment delivered on April 15, 2025. As with past instances, this case too was filed by individuals affiliated with the BJP, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and their associated organisations which form the Sangh Parivar (Family of Hindutva organisations).
It is indeed striking that the very Sangh Parivar, which so vehemently opposes the Urdu language and its vocabulary, relies heavily on Urdu words in nearly every statement, sentence and speech they deliver. In fact, it is impossible to escape this because many of these Urdu-derived words have no direct equivalents in modern spoken Hindi.
To illustrate this contradiction, let us look at a few slogans coined by the BJP and its leaders, as well as some of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s key speeches. Without the use of Urdu words, many of these slogans and speeches might never have taken shape, let alone achieved such widespread popularity in society.
Recall the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. During that campaign, the BJP and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi popularised the slogan: “Abki Baar, Modi Sarkaar.”
The word ‘Sarkaar’ in this slogan is originally Persian, which entered Hindi via Urdu. In Hindi, it can be loosely translated as ‘Shaasan’ (governance), ‘Prashaasan’ (administration), ‘Maalik’ (ruler), ‘Shaasak’ (governor) or ‘Mukhiya’ (leader). Due to the widespread use of Persian during the Mughal era, this term, along with many others, became embedded in Indian languages like Hindi and Urdu.
Now imagine removing ‘Sarkaar’ from the slogan “Ab ki Baar, Modi Sarkaar” on the grounds that it is a Persian-origin Urdu word. Could the BJP or its leaders and cadres who rail against Urdu, have even coined such a slogan? And if they had not, would they have achieved the historic feat of forming their first full-majority government at the Union? What about the second time, when their slogan was, “Fir Ek Baar, Modi Sarkaar”?
In the same 2014 campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also began projecting himself as a “Chowkidar” – a watchman of the nation, guarding against corruption. He frequently said things like: “Main desh ka chowkidar hoon, main bhrashtachar nahi hone dunga. (I am the nation’s watchman; I will not allow corruption.)”
The word ‘Chowkidar’ in this slogan is itself a hybrid. The root ‘Chowki’ comes from Sanskrit, meaning “one who holds or guards a post.” But the suffix ‘-daar’ is of Persian origin, commonly used to denote someone who holds a position or responsibility.
Thus, ‘Chowkidar’ is a blended word, combining elements from both Sanskrit and Persian, and literally translates to “one who guards the chowki.” This illustrates how deeply interwoven Persian, and by extension Urdu, has become in the very vocabulary used by those who now seek to reject it.
Similarly, after winning the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and coming to power, Modi’s government undertook demonetisation. When assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh were held in 2017, Modi, while addressing a rally in Moradabad in 2016, delivered what would become one of the most popular lines of his political career.
Defending his government’s decision on demonetisation, he said: “Ham to faqir aadmi hain, jholaa uthaa kar chal padenge.” (We are just humble itinerants; we’ll pick up our bag and walk away.)
In this sentence:
The word ‘Faqir’ is of Arabic origin, translating as “one who begs,” “a poor person” or “one who lives by alms.”
The word ‘Aadmi’ is of Persian origin, derived from the Arabic ‘Aadam’, and means “human being” or “manushya/manav” in Hindi.
The word ‘Jholaa’ is a vernacular word commonly used in Urdu, meaning “a cloth bag used to carry belongings.”
Beyond this, Modi – and other leaders of the Sangh Parivar – frequently use words like ‘Garib’ (poor), ‘Neend’ (sleep), ‘Elaan’ (announcement), ‘Khabar’ (news), ‘Haftaa’ (week), ‘Wajah’ (reason), ‘Be-wajah’ (without reason), ‘Mausam’ (weather), ‘Qimat’ (price), ‘Mulaaqaat’ (meeting) and ‘Umar’ (age) – all of which are of Arabic or Persian origin, and have entered Hindi primarily through Urdu.

Festival of Lights shines bright: Hindus across Malaysia celebrate Deepavali with prayers, colours and togetherness

--------------
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 — Temples across the country glowed with lamps and chants early this morning as Hindus nationwide ushered in Deepavali, the Festival of Lights, with prayers, rituals and gatherings that celebrated faith, family and the triumph of good over evil.
The joyous occasion was marked by homes adorned with colourful kolams and flickering oil lamps, as Malaysians of all backgrounds joined in the festive cheer, a reflection of the nation’s unity in diversity.
A Bernama visit to the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple in Batu Caves found thousands of devotees gathering as early as 6am to perform prayers, bringing offerings of fruits and flowers to the deities in a gesture of thanksgiving.
For devotee K. Monissha, 26, from Subang Jaya, this year’s Deepavali holds special meaning as it is her first celebration with her husband after getting married last December.
“I usually come to this temple during Thaipusam, but this year we chose to come for Deepavali as well because the atmosphere is livelier, and more family members can join. This is my first Deepavali as a wife,” she said, accompanied by 10 family members.
Monissha, a procurement executive, said that according to Indian tradition, the first Deepavali after marriage is celebrated at the bride’s family home, complete with festive dishes, the giving of saris and cash gifts to family members.
Another devotee, M. Mathesha, 26, a human resource executive from Selayang, expressed her gratitude for being able to celebrate Deepavali with all her siblings this year after several years of being tied down by work commitments.
“This year, all five of us siblings managed to gather. After prayers, we’ll have a meal together. Last night we cooked mutton curry, chicken sambal and fried rice. I hope this Deepavali brings blessings and strengthens our family bond,” she said.
Besides local Hindu devotees, foreign tourists also took the opportunity to witness the festive atmosphere at the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple, which was packed with thousands of worshippers from early morning.
Indonesian tourist Natasya Praskila, 22, from Medan, said this was her first time experiencing the Festival of Lights in Malaysia. She chose Batu Caves after discovering it online, and was amazed by the colourful stalls selling sweets, flowers and cultural performances.
In Kedah, private sector employee S. Hemananthini, 32, was up as early as 6am to prepare special dishes before heading to the Sri Siva Muniswarar Alayam Temple in Kulim to perform her prayers.
“After prayers, my family and I have breakfast together. Usually, I’ll spend the morning with my family first, and friends will visit in the afternoon,” she said.
For N. Darsyini, 41, met at the Sri Maha Mariamman Devasthanam Temple in Alor Setar, this year’s Deepavali celebration was extra special as her four siblings, who live outside Kedah, returned to celebrate the festival at her home in Taman Bersatu instead of their hometown in Negeri Sembilan.
Meanwhile, in Selangor, accountant R. Visalini, 26, said she hopes this year’s Festival of Lights brings happiness to all devotees, as she looks forward to enjoying her mother’s cooking and visiting family members.
“For Deepavali, we usually have tosai, idiyappam, and idli served with chicken and mutton curry, and there are also sweets like laddu,” she said.
In Kelantan, although Hindus form a minority in the state, the celebration was still filled with joy.
For R. Sriraam, 22, a Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) student from Batu Kawan, Penang, celebrating Deepavali for the first time in Kelantan was a meaningful experience.
“I’m grateful to celebrate Deepavali with my mother, P. Meenachee, 52, and father, C. Ramayah, 57, who travelled from Penang yesterday. We began the day with an oil bath at 6.30am before heading to the temple for prayers,” he said when met at the Arulmigu Subramaniyar Alayam Temple in Kota Bharu.
M. Kanikum, 79, from Wakaf Bharu in Tumpat, meanwhile, was delighted to have all her children and grandchildren home for the celebration, as well as to receive guests of various races.
In Terengganu, despite the Indian community being a minority, the festive spirit was still felt, with the Sri Kailasa Nathar Alayam Temple in Kuala Terengganu serving as the main venue for religious rituals.
In Negeri Sembilan, the state’s oldest temple, Sri Bala Thandayuthapani Temple on Jalan Yam Tuan, Seremban, drew about 5,000 Hindu devotees from as early as 7am.
In Perlis, treasurer of the Arulmigu Arumugaswamy Dhevasthanam Temple in Kangar, M. Ashok Kumar, said the temple also provided meals for devotees attending prayers today.
In Johor, the 114-year-old Arulmigu Rajamariamman Devasthanam Temple drew about 3,000 Hindu devotees as early as 6 am. The celebration also attracted foreign tourists eager to witness the vibrant festivities and experience the customs and culture of the Indian community.
Meanwhile, in Pahang, the atmosphere at the Sri Mariamman Temple in Kuantan was lively with devotees performing prayers, while in Melaka, hundreds of Hindu devotees thronged the Sri Muthu Mariamman Temple in Bukit Beruang from as early as 7am.
In Perak, an estimated 10,000 devotees visited the Kallumalai Arulmigu Subramaniar Temple at Gunung Cheroh, Ipoh, from as early as 6 am to perform religious rites. The celebration also drew foreign tourists and people of other races keen to experience the joyous Deepavali atmosphere.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, in a Facebook post, expressed hope that the Deepavali celebration would bring light, happiness, love and peace to all who celebrate it.
In Penang, the early morning rain did not dampen the spirit of Hindu devotees, who flocked to the Muniswarar Temple along Jalan Baru in Perai and the Arulmigu Karumariamman Temple in Seberang Jaya on the mainland for prayers.
Checks by Bernama found the temples vibrant with colour as families dressed in traditional Indian attire and carrying flowers, milk and trays of offerings as a gesture of gratitude in conjunction with the Festival of Lights.
L. Govind Raj, 33, said Deepavali was the perfect time to strengthen family ties and uphold age-old traditions, adding that this year’s celebration was especially meaningful as all four of his siblings returned home for the festival.
“This year, I got a longer holiday and the children have extra school break, so we get to spend more time together. My mother is the happiest because all her children, in-laws and grandchildren are home for Deepavali.
“Besides visiting relatives, we also welcome friends and neighbours of different faiths. That’s the beauty of Malaysia. This spirit of togetherness is what unites us,” he said, adding that traditional treats such as muruku, laddu and chicken curry were prepared for guests.
In Sabah, about 1,000 devotees attended prayers at the Sri Pasupathinath Alayam Temple in Kota Kinabalu from as early as 8am.
Temple president Datuk Dr K. Mathavan said the celebration was even more festive this year with the presence of the Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Musa Aman, reflecting the spirit of unity among Malaysia’s multiracial community. — Bernama

Kaduna Religious Divide Has Ended, Mosque, Church Now Same – APC Chairman
October 20, 2025

APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda
------------
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has commended Governor Uba Sani for what he described as his efforts in uniting Kaduna State and eliminating divisions based on religion and ethnicity.
Naija News reports that Yilwatda, who spoke in Kaduna on Sunday, said the governor had restored peace, security, and inclusiveness in the state, earning the admiration of both Christians and Muslims.
“Your Excellency, I want to thank you for doing something different in Kaduna State. Kaduna State was once known for insecurity, but the story has changed,” Yilwatda said.
The APC national chairman applauded the governor for “valuing human life” and giving every citizen a voice regardless of background.
“Thank you for uniting Kaduna State. You have removed the embargo of religion and tribalism and given everybody in Kaduna State a voice. You have shown that they matter,” he stated.
He added that under Sani’s administration, harmony among religious groups had greatly improved.
“Today, the mosque and the church are the same—you have given them one voice. Thank you for uniting the people of Kaduna State,” he said.
Yilwatda urged other states to emulate the Kaduna model, describing it as a template for national unity and peace.
“This template must have a national coloration,” he said. “You have done wonderfully well infrastructure-wise and party-wise, you have brought everyone under one umbrella.”
He also commended Sani for improving security and rebuilding confidence among residents, adding, “Thank you for making everybody use the broom to sweep insecurity.”
These claims by the APC national chairman come two weeks after bandits attacked Southern Kaduna and killed four residents in a series of attacks that spanned three days, Naija News reports.
The violent attack occurred when gunmen ambushed a commercial vehicle conveying passengers from Awon village to Kachia town.
According to SaharaReporters, a resident, Sebastian Yakubu, said the attackers shot dead the driver, identified as Ibrahim Makama, and a passenger, Jonathan Jeremiah, a fresh National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) graduate.
“They kidnapped some of the passengers in other vehicles while others escaped by sheer luck,” Yakubu told reporters.
Yakubu added that the same armed group had earlier killed a farmer in Awon village on Tuesday before the latest attack. In contrast, another resident abducted from Ankwa was later killed despite a ransom being paid.
“As we speak, there’s one retired security officer still in captivity after being kidnapped in the area over two months ago. Yet, our people are not talking, and radio and newspaper journalists are paid to be quiet,” he lamented.
The Thursday killings add to a growing list of tragedies in the region.
On September 24, bandits stormed Kauran Fawa village in Giwa LGA, killing one resident, Sabitu Hamza, and leaving another, Gambo Abdulkadir, badly injured.
Similarly, on September 7, gunmen invaded Wakeh village in Agunu District, killing eight people, injuring many others, and burning homes. The same week, residents of Ankwa, Bishini, and Katari communities decried repeated attacks that have left them traumatised and displaced.

Saudi’s new stricter Haj and Umrah health rules: No chronic illnesses, must perform pilgrimage unaided
20 Oct 2025

The new health requirements means those with severe health impairments will not be allowed to perform haj. — Saudi Ministry of Media/Handout via Reuters
-------------
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 — The Saudi Ministry of Haj and Umrah has introduced new health requirements for pilgrims in the 1447H/2026M Haj season, including the discontinuation of the Tabung Haji (TH) Treatment Centre in the Holy Land.
In a statement today, TH group managing director and chief executive officer Mustakim Mohamad said the new health protocols would be enforced by TH and must be followed by Malaysian pilgrims to obtain their Haj visa.
Key requirements include being free from infectious diseases, serious or uncontrolled chronic conditions, and having the physical ability to perform Haj rituals independently.
Pilgrims with conditions such as chronic kidney or heart failure, chronic lung or liver disease, cognitive or motor impairments, high-risk pregnancies, active infections, or cancer undergoing treatment will not be eligible to perform Haj.
Mustakim also advised prospective pilgrims to prepare physically for the journey, given the long stay in Saudi Arabia and the hot, dusty conditions.
He stressed that good health remains a key requirement for Haj, as outlined in the National Muzakah Haj Resolutions and in line with the Ministry of Health's (MOH) mandatory health screenings.
In addition, for the 2026 Haj season, TH will no longer operate a Treatment Centre in the Holy Land. Pilgrims requiring further treatment will be referred to Saudi hospitals, with ongoing supervision from Malaysian health experts.
However, TH will continue to provide health clinics at all pilgrim accommodations in Makkah and Madinah.
These clinics will offer outpatient services and pharmacy support, managed by qualified medical staff from the MOH, to ensure the continuity of healthcare for Malaysian pilgrims, including assistance for the elderly and those with disabilities.
Mustakim added that TH, in collaboration with MOH, plans to provide healthcare facilities at private hospitals in Saudi Arabia if necessary. and will deploy 225 healthcare personnel to support the 2026 Haj season.
TH remains committed to prioritising the safety, wellbeing, and comfort of Malaysian pilgrims by dedicating a significant portion of its Holy Land quota to medical staff. — Bernama

VHP demands Delhi be renamed 'Indraprastha,' writes to minister Kapil Mishra
19 Oct 2025
Right wing outfit Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Sunday demanded that Delhi be renamed to "Indraprastha" to reflect its "ancient history and culture."
In a letter to Delhi Culture Minister Kapil Mishra, VHP Delhi prant secretary Suredra Kumar Gupta said, "The name of Delhi should be changed back to Indraprastha so that the name of the capital can be associated with its ancient history and culture."
"Names aren't mere changes; they mirror a nation's consciousness. When we say Delhi, we only see a period of 2,000 years. But when we say Indraprastha, we connect with a glorious history spanning 5,000 years," he said, reported PTI.
The group also demanded renaming Indira Gandhi International Airport as Indraprastha International Airport, Delhi Railway Station as Indraprastha Railway Station and Shahjahanabad Development Board as Indraprastha Development Board.
"Wherever there are memorials to Muslim invaders, Hindu heroes, sages, and sites from the Pandava period should also be introduced and memorials should be built near them," Gupta said.
Gupta claimed these demands have been made based on the suggestions given by scholars, historians and public representatives at an event, 'Indraprastha Punarjagran Sankalp Sabha', held recently in Delhi.
A "grand memorial" in the name of King Hemchandra Vikramaditya and a King Hemchandra Vikramaditya Military School should be established in Delhi, Gupta said.
The history of Hemchandra Vikramaditya and Indraprastha during the Pandava period should be included in Delhi's education curriculum, he added.

Extraordinary coordination among three services compelled Pakistan to surrender during Op Sindoor: PM Modi
20 Oct 2025
PANAJI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the extraordinary coordination among the three services together compelled Pakistan to surrender during Operation Sindoor.
Modi also lauded the valour and determination of security forces and said it was due to that, the nation has achieved a significant milestone by "eliminating Maoist terrorism".
He made the remarks while addressing Navy personnel on board INS Vikrant.
INS Vikrant is not just a warship but is a testimony to 21st-century India's hard work, talent, impact and commitment, Modi said.
He said INS Vikrant reflects the capability of India's armed forces and is a towering symbol of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'.
The extraordinary coordination among the three services together compelled Pakistan to surrender during Operation Sindoor, the prime minister said.
In his remarks, Modi also said India is on the threshold of freedom from Maoist violence and "this freedom is knocking on our doors".
Earlier, 125 districts were in the grip of Maoist terror but now that has reduced to just 11 districts.
"While 90 per cent success has been achieved, I'm confident that police forces will succeed in completely eliminating Maoist violence," he said.
Asserting that his government aims to make India one of world's top defence exporters, Modi said more than 40 warships and submarines have been built by our shipyards since 2014.
PM Modi added that the name Brahmos strikes fear in some minds and now many countries are keen to buy these missiles.
"The night spent yesterday on INS Vikrant is hard to put into words. I saw the immense energy and enthusiasm you all were filled with. When I saw you singing patriotic songs yesterday, and the way you described Operation Sindoor in your songs, no words can ever fully convey the experience that a jawan feels standing on a battlefield," Modi said.
"My Diwali has been special as it was spent amongst you," he said.

BAGAN DATUK: Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan have finalised seat distribution for the upcoming Sabah state election to prevent clashes between the coalition partners.
BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed negotiations between PH and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah were in their final stages.
“I hope that on Nov 15 we will know the actual number of seats that will be contested by each coalition party,“ he told reporters after a Deepavali event here today.
The UMNO president said BN would field candidates with 80% comprising new faces including from Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings.
“This is to give a signal that BN Sabah is ready to spread the differences this time so that we can give new hope to the voters in Sabah,“ he added.
All BN candidates are 100% locals according to the deputy prime minister.
Ahmad Zahid acknowledged that clashes between BN and GRS candidates remain inevitable in some constituencies.
The Election Commission has set November 29 as polling day with nomination on November 15 and early voting on November 25.
Regarding recent media reports about political leaders from different parties appearing together, Ahmad Zahid said such interactions were normal.
“Everyone can be friends regardless of political party, race or religion and we as Malaysians are very open, but it is best that we only fight during elections,“ he stated.
Earlier, the deputy prime minister distributed 2,000 food boxes to B40 families and RM100 vouchers to 703 Tamil school students in his constituency. – Bernama

First mosque by Nigerian Muslim community in Manitoba 'a dream come true'
Oct 19, 2025
For Titi Tijani, the first mosque built by Winnipeg's Nigerian Muslim community is “a dream come true."
She was one of dozens of people at the official opening of the new mosque and resource centre at 500 Dovercourt Dr. in Winnipeg's Whyte Ridge neighbourhood on Saturday morning.
The Al-Haqq Masjid is the first mosque in Manitoba to be opened by and for the Nigerian Muslim community. Al-Haqq translates to "truth" in Arabic.
The mosque was entirely funded by the community, through the Winnipeg-based Al-Haqq Prayer Group of Canada Inc.
Tijani said the Nigerian Muslim community was small when she first came to Manitoba 37 years ago. Along with other community members, she started a prayer group in her home because they didn't have a dedicated mosque to go to.
On Saturday, the new mosque was packed with worshippers.
“The community has grown tremendously in the past maybe 15 years," she said. "So when you have more people here, that’s when we come together and say, ‘where can we gather, where can we pray together.’”
She said community members had previously been gathering at the Manitoba Islamic Association building on Waverley Street.
“So today we are able to acquire our own,” she said. “It is a community mosque, but it is funded by the Nigerian Muslim community, so we are very happy today to open it.”
She added the mosque will invite and welcome community members of all faiths and denominations, and also offer community programming, education and resources for people to learn about Islam.
Tijani believes more and more mosques are going to open in Winnipeg, as the Muslim community in this city and province grows.
"There are many mosques coming up with the population of Muslims in Manitoba, and so we needed this for the whole community, and the whole of Winnipeg," she said.
According to officials with the Al-Haqq Prayer Group of Canada, they set a fundraising goal of $1.5 million to get the mosque built. All funds for the project came from community members.
“We discovered many years back that the Muslim population is growing rapidly in Manitoba,” Yunusa Salami, the new mosque's Imam.
“It’s so important for us to see that we have a new area to accommodate the ever-growing Muslim community here in Manitoba.”
He said many from the community were celebrating on Saturday as the new mosque officially opened its doors.
“Today everybody is happy that our dream became a reality,” he said. “This is one of the happiest moments in my life for having the dream come to reality, and this is so wonderful for our community."

How Sokoto gov achieved peaceful coexistence in state – Commissioner for Religious Affairs Sani
October 19, 2025
The ministry, as you rightly observed, is not a new one. His Excellency, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the former governor, first established the ministry during his tenure. Being a highly religious person, he institutionalized religion by creating the ministry because Islam is a way of life. The Islamic religion is considered a complete way of life because it encompasses all aspects of human existence. It’s not just about religious rituals—it also provides guidance for living and addresses spiritual, social, economic, and political issues.
For example, in personal conduct, it emphasizes ethics, morality, hygiene, and spiritual development. In social relationships, it guides interactions with non-Muslims and promotes social justice. The same applies to economic matters—wealth distribution, principles of trade, etc. So, by investing in religious affairs, the governor is addressing many issues. Take personal hygiene: a Muslim who is hygienic and keeps his environment clean will hardly need to go to the hospital. A true Muslim will not cheat or overcharge. If we provide water at the mosque, we are killing two birds with one stone—water for worshippers to perform their rituals and for the community to use.
So, the mandate of the ministry is to touch the lives of the people, and I pray that our father, Senator Wamakko, and the governor will be rewarded for their services to Islam. His Excellency has shown the political will by reviving the ministry and ensuring that it functions. To show that he means business, it’s one of his 9-Point Smart Agendas on which he campaigned for the governorship election in 2023. The governor truly deserves commendation.
To ensure the ministry functions effectively, he appointed a technocrat. In the past, politicians ran the ministry. With all modesty, I was a lecturer in Islamic Studies at the university and a Chief Imam of a mosque and I also studied religious affairs in the United Kingdom.
So, if we’re talking about tolerance—I understand that, having studied in a multicultural and multi-religious society. I have lived and studied in secular societies, so I understand that visitors and non-indigenes deserve to live in peace. My background has helped in driving the ministry in the right direction.
Yes, but basically, it is to manage everything religious in the state: to ensure religious harmony and mutual coexistence among all people, and to make sure that places of worship are decent and the welfare of the people—regardless of their faith—is catered for. It might interest you to know that people of all faiths come to us for assistance, and we do assist them. We work hand in hand to manage crises. The reason those crises haven’t escalated is due to the good relationship that we maintain with all stakeholders as part of our mandate. So, one of the key mandates of the ministry is to manage religious affairs and ensure peaceful coexistence among the different religious groups within the state.
You’ve made a fundamental point—one that, unfortunately, is lost on many people. Sokoto State, being the seat of the Caliphate and the home of Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio, is a state where Islam is a way of life, and that’s no fluke. People shouldn’t be surprised. In everything, the people give religion utmost priority.
Islam, being a way of life, allows the governor to address several issues at once. For instance, by rehabilitating mosques and providing them with water and solar power, the governor is not only enhancing the worship experience but also addressing health, water, and sanitation issues. You don’t go to the market every day, but if you are a Muslim, you must pray five times a day, which means coming into contact with many people and potential health risks. So, by ensuring that mosques are in hygienic condition, we are helping to ensure that our people remain healthy.
Our investment has several benefits across various sectors. We’ve eliminated diseases that usually spread from unsanitary mosque toilets. So, religion being part of the Governor’s 9-Point Smart Agenda goes beyond worship—it touches on many aspects of life. In some other countries, the ministry is called the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Guidance. We also engage in guidance, but in Sokoto State, the name of the ministry remains ‘Religious Affairs.’
The Governor making religious affairs one of his 9-Point Smart Agenda priorities is certainly not about politics. But for those who insist it is, my response is that this is good politics. During Ramadan, for instance, we fed the people. We also launched a campaign against traders hiking the prices of commodities. The Zakat Agency is doing fantastic work—sponsoring orphans and less privileged students in higher institutions. They are able to do this from the proceeds donated by wealthy individuals.
The campaign for people to live holy lives and to worship in a conducive environment is not politics. If it were politics, His Excellency would have appointed a politician to lead the ministry—but he chose someone who is apolitical. And politics, after all, is about what the people want. The people of Sokoto State have made it clear that they want the government to pay attention to religion. The governor vigorously campaigned on the 9-Point Smart Agenda and won, meaning the people accepted it.
Again, if it were politics, there are mosques that openly campaigned against the governor during the 2023 elections. These Imams opposed Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, but we are still working with them because their worshippers are our citizens and are included in our welfare packages. If it were purely political, we would have sidelined them. But that’s not our approach.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto has achieved peaceful coexistence in several ways. First, he has been fair to everyone—including those who didn’t vote for him—and has treated all parts of the state justly. For instance, he has concentrated development in the Sokoto metropolis and has constructed roads in areas inhabited by so-called non-indigenes. That’s what true leadership is, and it makes everyone feel included.
As a matter of policy, the government of Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto pays WAEC/NECO fees for all students, without discrimination. That sense of belonging is very important. When the United States Ambassador to Nigeria visited Sokoto, he commended the administration for how it has managed religious diversity. Believe me, since Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto came on board, there hasn’t been any religious tension between the adherents of the two main religions in the state.
Yes, he has—by being fair and just in the distribution of projects and by carrying everyone along. At the end of the day, the most important thing is good governance, justice, and equity.
Even in upholding Islamic Sharia law, the rights of people of other faiths are protected. No one is forced to appear before a Sharia court. Even for Muslims, it’s optional. It’s just like Islamic banking—not every Muslim subscribes to halal banking. That’s their choice. Some prefer conventional banks, and they are comfortable with those. It’s the same with the Sharia courts—nobody is forced against their will to appear before them.
First, a few clarifications. The fact that we have a mandate to arrest moral decline doesn’t mean Hisbah will go around flogging people or infringing on their rights. While we believe Hisbah can play a role, we are also mindful of legal boundaries and the fact that the law presumes everyone innocent until proven guilty.
So, what we’ve done is to focus on enlightenment campaigns through town halls, mosques, and electronic media—programmes moderated by experts in Islamic jurisprudence. People must be informed.
For example, we collaborated with the Saudi Arabian government to train Imams and muezzins on delivering Friday sermons. Saudi Arabia is a model of religious tolerance. Have you ever heard of religious violence there, despite the presence of different sects? There, an Imam doesn’t just climb the pulpit and say whatever suits him. There’s a committee that vets sermons.
The training was enlightening and comprehensive. They asked the Imams: what is the purpose of your Friday sermon? Is it to insult the government, the people, or other religions? Or is it to guide the people on peaceful coexistence and the hereafter? They also advised adding discussions about health and business to sermons.
Even the call to prayer has etiquettes. I’m glad our participants were exposed to all of that. Social media influencers, media owners, representatives of the NBC, and university professionals also participated in the training. The central message was: use your platforms to build, not to destroy. Simply having a platform doesn’t give anyone the license to lie or incite violence.
We also organized training for butchers—educating them on the slaughtering of animals according to Islamic principles, ensuring that the animals are healthy, and not tampering with scales. During Ramadan, we ran an extensive campaign promoting accurate measurements. We even bought and distributed proper measurement tools.
Only when people violate the law does Hisbah step in. Guidance is another major part of the ministry’s mandate—guidance toward doing what is right. Hisbah is more like community policing. That’s why they are unarmed and operate based on reconciliation. They don’t detain people. When the governor launched the corps, he made it clear that they are not in competition with the police, but complementary to them.
The board includes representatives from all security agencies, the Sultanate Council, and the Ministry of Justice. Hisbah is a legally authorized peacekeeping body representing the people. To date, they have no court cases against them—something some criticize as a sign of weakness. But it simply shows that they operate within the law. There have been no reports of them violating anyone’s rights.
We have taken several concrete steps. First, we are deliberate in recruiting people who are passionate about service and who are educated. In Sokoto State, we’ve ensured that the composition of Hisbah includes representatives from law enforcement agencies—the State Security Service, the Nigerian Police Force, the Ministry of Justice, the Nigerian Bar Association, Local Government representatives, and the Sultanate Council.
This means that before any decision is taken, there is a consensus guided by law, tradition, and due process. Secondly, Hisbah members are constantly trained. For example, in Sokoto State, the law prohibits the sale and consumption of alcohol, but Hisbah doesn’t simply go around confiscating alcoholic beverages. They must first obtain a court order. This shows how committed we are to the rule of law. We ask the court: do we have the legal right to destroy this alcohol? Once we get a judgment, we carry out our duty accordingly.
I may not be able to give the exact current number because we recently conducted a new recruitment exercise. The first batch consisted of about 230 members.
God bless our father and leader, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, who established the Zakat Agency out of love for the people and his deep understanding of Islam. The agency focuses on the welfare of the people. Basically, it collects contributions from wealthy individuals and distributes them to the poor and less privileged. The government also contributes financially, and the agency receives funding from international donors.
It also engages in income-generating activities like farming and real estate. The agency is doing fantastically well, and the people are very happy. Most of the farmhands employed are orphans, who not only get paid but also have their education funded from the proceeds. Some of their students are currently studying in Malaysia in courses relevant to the development of Sokoto State.
The agency uses what we call the Productive Zakat Model—it doesn’t just give handouts. It invests in businesses, skills acquisition, and entrepreneurship.
My first achievement is the successful revival of the ministry, which had practically died. The previous administration killed not just this ministry, but many others, along with many vital projects. The Ministry of Religious Affairs only functioned during major Islamic celebrations—basically to share foodstuffs and animals during Sallah—then it would go dormant.
Today, the ministry is completely transformed. We have defined our responsibilities under five key areas: Infrastructure: We’ve engaged in the reconstruction, rehabilitation, and outright construction of mosques and Islamic schools. The governor believes that places of worship should be beautiful and conducive for worshippers. We’ve also invested in securing cemeteries and constructing proper drainage systems. We pay allowances to those maintaining the cemeteries to prevent them from being accessed by people with evil intentions. So far, we’ve built or reconstructed 65 mosques across the state. Every local government has at least one mosque, and some have two. We also install solar power and boreholes in many of these locations.
Welfare: The governor disapproved of the idea of Imams begging for money. In the past, due to poverty, some people used to “buy” Imams to serve their interests. Today, we pay allowances to Imams and render other assistance as needed. This has helped restore their dignity and independence. We also support individuals on compassionate grounds—after proper verification. The allowances approved for mosques now allow them to employ cleaners.
Morality and Sanity: This is where Hisbah plays a vital role. Our society is facing serious challenges such as drunkenness and indecent dressing. While we don’t enforce a dress code, we do engage the youth in meaningful conversations on decent dressing. We also resolve disputes—between neighbors and even between mosque committees and worshippers.
These are the core areas we have structured our activities around, and the transformation is visible across the state.
Whenever I meet people—both within and outside Sokoto—the message is always one of appreciation for the governor. His accomplishments are clear. We have weekly programmes on many television stations across the country, so people are able to follow the government’s projects. I’ve personally delivered many appreciation letters and plaques from various organizations to the Governor.
People are constantly praying for him. Sokoto people are good people. Once you work for them sincerely, they will support and pray for you. I’ve become something of a courier of goodwill messages to the Governor because people can see his numerous projects and his dedication. I’m happy to be that errand boy.
I think he has done fantastically well. I’m not a politician, so I can afford to speak honestly to the people of Sokoto State—and to Nigerians at large.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, whom I’ve come to know and work with, cannot hurt a fly. He is a God-fearing, a man of integrity, and a firm believer in the rule of law and due process. While he is a politician by definition, his politics is not a ‘do-or-die’ affair. The opposition has resorted to name-calling only after they realized he had politically outperformed them. They are dazed by his numerous achievements. Let’s not forget—they squandered their own opportunity and they now want to blame the Governor for their failures.
If Governor Ahmad were intolerant, I would know. For example, if he were vengeful, he would’ve discouraged me from assisting Imams who campaigned against him during the 2023 elections. But he’s done nothing of the sort. I meet opposition members regularly, and they’ve openly admitted that they will continue to harass him, hoping something negative might stick. That’s just the ugly side of politics.
We hope and pray so—for the good of the people of Sokoto State. We want him to consolidate on his achievements. For restoring the people’s confidence in governance and embarking on impactful projects, Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto certainly deserves a second term.
At the end of our dear governor’s impactful eight years, I hope to see a prosperous and peaceful Sokoto State. My prayer is that the next governor will be just as committed and passionate about the state’s development as Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto.
I trust our elders to identify a worthy successor. Our father and leader, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, deserves praise for recognizing Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto’s leadership qualities and believing in him when others doubted his capacity. I’m extremely proud that the Governor hasn’t disappointed us.
My loyalty is to Sokoto State. So, whoever can improve Sokoto State better than the current Governor will have my unflinching support.

GenZ protesters return to streets in Morocco after pause
October 19, 2025
After almost 10 days without taking to the streets, young Moroccans resumed their protests in front of parliament in the capital, Rabat, on Saturday.
Led by online youth collective, GenZ 212, they are demanding government reform education and healthcare, while tackling corruption and a cost of living crisis.
One protester, Reda, said the gathering was organised to unify their ranks and coordinate their demonstrations.
“It sends a message to the authorities. Even though we paused for more than 10 days, we are continuing, and will continue until our demands are met, not just in words but in reality,” he said.
“We want to see solutions that satisfy young people and make us feel that our daily sacrifices are worthwhile."
It was the first demonstration since King Mohammed VI addressed parliament 10 days ago following weeks of unrest.
But he did not mention the GenZ movement directly and his call for job creation for young people and improvements in healthcare and education left many of the protesters unconvinced.
"Whether this movement will bear its fruit, I think it’s very soon to tell. There will still be, you know, political changes that will come in the upcoming days,” said protester Naji.
“In politics there are a lot of variables that enter in the equation, and a lot of things can change. So, I think that it’s soon to tell but obviously the youth are hopeful."
Young people taking part in protests on Saturday said the movement has not lost momentum during the break, despite some reports to the contrary.
Morocco’s Gen Z-led protests have drawn inspiration from similar movements in nations like Nepal.

Saudi art shines in Venice ahead of Noor Riyadh
October 19, 2025
RIYADH: An art exhibition in Venice is helping to introduce international audiences to the creative spirit behind the upcoming Noor Riyadh, the world’s largest festival dedicated to light art.
Held under the theme “In the Blink of an Eye,” the exhibition is organized in collaboration with Italy’s Fondazione Querini Stampalia, and is running at the venue in Venice until Nov. 23.
It reflects Riyadh’s rapid cultural transformation and underscores the capital’s growing role as a regional and global arts hub, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday.
Curated by Mami Kataoka, with Sarah Al-Mutlaq and Li Zhenhua, the exhibition presents a unified artistic vision exploring human experience, transformation, and light, bridging Riyadh and Venice through a shared visual and emotional language.
The exhibition features works by four artists whose pieces will also appear at the Noor Riyadh festival in Saudi Arabia from Nov. 20 to Dec. 6.
Artist Kim Eung-won’s work showcases the Riyadh Metro project as both an urban landmark and a public art gallery, integrating contemporary artworks into station design.
Wang Yuyang is presenting a dynamic interpretation of Riyadh’s rapid technological and urban growth, symbolizing its luminous, modern identity.
Saudi artist Abdulrahman Al-Shahed is contributing a calligraphic work linking Riyadh and Venice, reflecting the historic dialogue between Arab and European cultures.
The exhibition also honors the late Safeya Binzagr (1940–2024), a pioneer of modern Saudi art, introducing Italian audiences to her influential contributions and legacy.
Hosted in the architecturally renowned halls of the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, designed by Carlo Scarpa, the exhibition creates a visual and conceptual dialogue between classical Italian architecture and contemporary Saudi creativity.
The initiative is part of the Riyadh Art Program’s mission to strengthen the international presence of Saudi art, position Riyadh as a global center for cultural exchange, and advance Saudi Vision 2030, which identifies culture and the arts as key engines of urban growth and the creative economy.

Saudi Arabia highlights green efforts at G20 meeting
October 19, 2025
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its leadership in supporting international efforts to combat land degradation and drought and to promote environmental sustainability. It also contributes to global initiatives to protect natural resources.
The statement came during Saudi Arabia’s participation in the G20 Ministers of Environment and Climate Change meeting in Cape Town, South Africa.
The Saudi delegation was headed by Osama Faqeeha, deputy minister for the environment at the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture.
The meeting aimed to strengthen international cooperation on environmental challenges and ecosystem protection, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday.
Faqeeha highlighted Saudi Arabia’s role in advancing environmental protection nationally, regionally, and internationally.
He pointed to initiatives launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman — the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative — and the National Environment Strategy.
He also noted the Kingdom’s progress in expanding afforestation projects, combating desertification, rehabilitating degraded lands, and increasing protected areas by more than 400 percent.
Faqeeha underscored Saudi Arabia’s role in the G20, including launching the Global Initiative to Reduce Land Degradation and the Global Coral Reef Initiative during its 2020 G20 presidency.
He said the Kingdom has influenced global environmental dialogue, particularly by hosting the 16th UN Convention to Combat Desertification Conference in Riyadh in 2024.
The conference, the largest in the convention’s history, led to the Riyadh Declaration and more than 35 resolutions on sustainable land management, community empowerment, and research innovation.
About 40 initiatives were introduced as part of the Riyadh Agenda, including the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership, aimed at strengthening global cooperation against drought.

Tokyo governor keen to attract investors from Saudi Arabia
October 20, 2025
TOKYO: Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko, speaking ahead of her trip to the Middle East later this month, emphasized the importance of attracting investment from Saudi Arabia during her weekly press conference.
“We are currently in the midst of attracting investors to Saudi Arabia, a country that is enthusiastic about investing, so I think it is extremely valuable to promote Tokyo there,” she said. “I hope to promote Tokyo’s initiatives and appeal, and foster cooperation between cities.”
Koike referred to the Future Cities Initiative in Riyadh, which, she pointed out, has attracted a great deal of attention by bringing together investors and those involved in innovation and financial strategy.
“To give you an idea, people like Elon Musk have attended this event,” she said. “And it attracts roughly 5,000 people, making it a sort of ‘Davos in the desert.’ At these events, I hope to firmly promote Tokyo’s financial market and engage in investor relations.”
While Koike is keen to boost business opportunities, she will also be promoting so-called soft power, such as anime and manga. She will be appearing on stage with Takahashi Yoichi, the creator of Captain Tsubasa, who is known as Captain Majid in the Middle East. Koike said anime and its content are said to have an economic impact of approximately 8 trillion yen.
Koike will be conducting business matching for Tokyo-based small and medium-sized enterprises and startups in Riyadh and Kuwait, as well as Tokyo’s “excellent technology” to local government officials and business communities.

Saudi Arabia welcomes immediate ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan
October 19, 2025
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Sunday welcomed the announcement of an immediate ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Afghanistan and Pakistan agreed to an immediate truce during talks in Doha, both sides said on Sunday, after a week of fierce border clashes, the worst violence between the South Asian neighbours since the Taliban seized power in Kabul in 2021.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the “Kingdom affirms its support for all regional and international efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability, and its constant commitment to ensuring security in a way that achieves stability and prosperity for the brotherly Pakistani and Afghan peoples.”
It added that the Kingdom looked forward to an end to tensions on the border between the two countries.
After peace talks in Doha, Qatar’s foreign ministry said early Sunday that “the two sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of mechanisms to consolidate lasting peace and stability between the two countries.”
They also agreed to follow-up meetings in the coming days to ensure the ceasefire, the Qatari foreign ministry added.

Israeli military launches attack on Gaza, Israeli media reports
October 19, 2025
JERUSALEM: The Israeli military launched an attack on Gaza on Sunday, Israeli media and residents reported, dimming hopes that a US-mediated ceasefire would lead to lasting peace in the enclave as Israel traded blame with Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Israel’s attacks on Sunday were the most serious test of an already fragile ceasefire, which took effect on October 11.
Palestinians in Gaza told Reuters they heard explosions and gunfire in Rafah in the south of the strip and witnesses separately reported heavy gunfire from Israeli tanks in the eastern town of Abassan near Khan Younis, also in southern Gaza.
Witnesses in Khan Younis heard a wave of airstrikes launched into Rafah early on Sunday afternoon.
An Israeli government spokesperson, when asked for confirmation of the attacks, deferred to the military. The military had no immediate comment.
Two killed in Northern Gaza airstrike
Local health authorities in Gaza said on Sunday two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the eastern Jabalia area of northern Gaza.
The Times of Israel reported that the military was conducting airstrikes in the Rafah area after militants attacked forces there, though it did not cite a source for the information.
An Israeli military official said on Sunday that Hamas had carried out multiple attacks against Israeli forces inside Gaza, including a rocket-propelled grenade attack and a sniper attack against Israeli soldiers.
“Both of the incidents happened in an Israeli-controlled area...This is a bold violation of the ceasefire,” the official said.
Senior Hamas official Izzat Al-Risheq said on Sunday that the Palestinian militant group remained committed to the ceasefire, which he accused Israel of repeatedly violating.
Neither Al-Risheq nor the Israeli military official made any mention of Sunday’s reported Israeli strikes in Gaza.
The government media office in Gaza said on Saturday that Israel had committed 47 violations after the ceasefire deal, leaving 38 dead and 143 wounded. “These violations have ranged from direct shooting at civilians, to deliberate shelling and targeting operations, as well as the arrest of several civilians,” the media office statement said.
Rafah crossing to remain closed
The Israeli government and Hamas have been accusing each other of violations of the ceasefire for days, with Israel saying the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt will remain closed until further notice.
Rafah has largely been shut since May 2024. The ceasefire deal also includes the ramping up of aid to Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of people were determined in August to be affected by famine, according to the IPC global hunger monitor.
Israel and Hamas have been engaged in a dispute over the return of the bodies of deceased hostages. Israel demanded that Hamas fulfill its obligations in turning over the remaining bodies of all 28 hostages. Hamas has returned all 20 live hostages and 12 of the deceased and has said it has no interest in keeping the bodies of remaining hostages. The group said the process needs effort and special equipment to recover corpses buried under rubble.
Formidable obstacles to Trump’s plan to end the war still remain. Key questions of Hamas disarming, the governance of Gaza, the make-up of an international “stabilization force,” and moves toward the creation of a Palestinian state have yet to be resolved.
When asked for comment, the US Embassy in Jerusalem referred inquiries to the State Department.

Kuwait's new rule: Mosques cannot install surveillance cameras without Ministry permission
Oct 20, 2025On October 19, 2025, Kuwait’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs issued a nationwide directive mandating that all surveillance cameras within mosques must receive prior approval from the ministry. This move places imams and muezzins under legal obligation to comply, marking a significant shift in the oversight of religious institutions across the country.
What’s happening? Mosque surveillance rules in Kuwait
Kuwait's Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has announced a new policy requiring all surveillance cameras in mosques to be approved by the ministry before installation. This directive, issued on October 19, 2025, mandates that imams and muezzins report any existing unapproved camera systems and prohibits unauthorized installations. The policy aims to standardize mosque operations, ensure transparency, and safeguard the facilities and worshippers.
Key points:
Any individual or organisation wishing to install or operate security cameras inside a mosque must first receive authorisation from the ministry.
Donations of cameras must be reported before installation: if someone offers a donation of surveillance equipment, the mosque’s imam or muezzin must notify the ministry before proceeding.
Any existing camera systems that were installed without ministry approval must be disclosed immediately.
The imams and muezzins will be held legally accountable if they fail to notify the ministry of unapproved systems.
The ministry states this is part of a broader effort to standardise mosque operations, protect mosque facilities and ensure the safety of worshippers.
In short: New oversight means all surveillance inside mosques now must go through official channels.
Why the change?
The ministry's decision comes in response to concerns over unauthorized surveillance installations and the need for centralized oversight. By requiring prior approval, the ministry seeks to maintain control over security measures in religious spaces, ensuring they align with national regulations and standards. This move also addresses potential privacy issues and aims to prevent misuse of surveillance systems.
Several motivations appear behind this tightening of rules:
Protection and safety of worshippers & facilities: The ministry explicitly says the aim is to safeguard the mosque premises, maintain safety, and ensure transparency.
Administrative control & oversight: By centralising supervision of camera systems, the ministry can ensure that installations comply with law and policy, rather than having ad-hoc or external parties setting up systems independently.
Standardising practices across mosques: The directive emphasises the goal of standardisation of mosque operations and functioning under governmental supervision.
Legitimacy of donations and external offers: Since mosques sometimes receive donated surveillance equipment (as happened in the past) the ministry appears to want to regulate that process tightly. For example, older reports show a corporate donation of 3,000 cameras to mosques in Kuwait from 2017.
Thus, the change reflects a move to ensure that mosque-surveillance is neither fragmented nor uncontrolled.
Impacts and practical implications
The new rules have clear implications for mosques, imams, worshippers, and donors. Under the directive, no mosque can unilaterally accept or install surveillance cameras from external parties, including companies or donors, without prior ministry approval. Transparency is now mandatory: any offer of surveillance equipment must be reported before installation, and existing systems installed without authorization must be declared. Imams and muezzins carry legal responsibility for failing to comply, elevating the policy from mere guidance to enforceable law. All systems will fall under the ministry’s administrative oversight, which will likely regulate how cameras are installed, managed, and monitored. For donors, this means that contributions of surveillance equipment will require navigation through the approval process, replacing the previous practice of direct donations or installations. Overall, the directive establishes the ministry as the central gatekeeper for all mosque surveillance.
For mosques across Kuwait, this policy means that any new surveillance installations must go through the ministry's approval process. Imams and muezzins are now legally responsible for reporting any unapproved systems and ensuring compliance with the new regulations. Donors wishing to contribute surveillance equipment must also notify the ministry before installation. This centralized approach aims to streamline security measures and maintain uniformity across religious institutions.

Israel resumes ceasefire in Gaza and says aid deliveries will restart Monday
October 20, 2025
JERUSALEM: Gaza’s fragile ceasefire faced its first major test Sunday as Israeli forces launched a wave of deadly strikes, saying Hamas militants had killed two soldiers, and an Israeli security official said the transfer of aid into the territory was halted.
The military later said it resumed enforcing the ceasefire, and the official confirmed that aid deliveries would resume Monday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he’s not authorized to discuss the issue with the media.
A little over a week has passed since the start of the US-proposed ceasefire aimed at ending two years of war. US President Donald Trump said the ceasefire remained in place and “we want to make sure it’s going to be very peaceful.”
He told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday that Hamas has been “quite rambunctious” and “they’ve been doing some shooting.” He suggested that the violence might be the fault of “rebels” within the organization rather than its leadership.
“It’s going to be handled toughly but properly,” he said. Trump did not say whether he thought the Israeli strikes were justified, saying “it’s under review.”
Vice President JD Vance said Sunday that he may visit Israel in the coming days.
“We’re trying to figure it out,” he told reporters, saying the administration wants to “go and check on how things are going.” Regarding the ceasefire, he said that “there’s going to be fits and starts.”
Health officials said at least 36 Palestinians were killed across Gaza, including children. Israel’s military said it struck dozens of Hamas targets after its troops came under fire.
A senior Egyptian official involved in the ceasefire negotiations said “round-the-clock” contacts were underway to de-escalate the situation. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak to reporters.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed the military to take “strong action” against any ceasefire violations but didn’t threaten to return to war.
Israel’s military said militants had fired at troops in areas of Rafah city that are Israeli-controlled according to agreed-upon ceasefire lines.
Hamas, which continued to accuse Israel of multiple ceasefire violations, said communication with its remaining units in Rafah had been cut off for months and “we are not responsible for any incidents occurring in those areas.”
Strikes in Gaza
Palestinians feared war would return to the famine-stricken territory where Israel cut off aid for over two months earlier this year after ending the previous ceasefire.
“It will be a nightmare,” said Mahmoud Hashim, a father of five from Gaza City, who appealed to US President Donald Trump and other mediators to act.
Al-Awda hospital said it received 24 bodies from several Israeli strikes in the Nuseirat and Bureij camps in central Gaza.
An airstrike on a makeshift coffeehouse in Zawaida town in central Gaza killed at least six Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, part of the Hamas-run government. A strike in Beit Lahiya in the north killed two men, according to Shifa hospital.
Another strike hit a tent in the Muwasi area of Khan Younis in the south, killing at least four people, including a woman and two children, according to Nasser Hospital.
“Where is peace?” said Khadijeh abu-Nofal in Khan Younis, as hospital workers treated wounded children. She accompanied a young woman hurt by shrapnel.
More bodies of hostages identified
Israel identified the remains of two hostages released by Hamas overnight: Ronen Engel, a father from Kibbutz Nir Oz, and Sonthaya Oakkharasri, a Thai agricultural worker from Kibbutz Be’eri.
Both were believed to have been killed during the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, which sparked the war. Engel’s wife, Karina, and two of his three children were kidnapped and released in a November 2023 ceasefire.
Hamas in the past week has handed over the remains of 12 hostages.
Its armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, said it found the body of another hostage and would return it Sunday “if circumstances in the field” allowed. It warned that any escalation by Israel would hamper search efforts.
Israel on Saturday pressed Hamas to fulfill its ceasefire role of returning the remains of all 28 deceased hostages, saying the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt would stay closed “until further notice.” It was the only crossing not controlled by Israel before the war.
Hamas says the war’s devastation and Israeli military control of certain areas have slowed the handover. Israel believes Hamas has access to more bodies than it has returned.
Israel has released 150 bodies of Palestinians back to Gaza, including 15 on Sunday, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Israel has neither identified the bodies nor said how they died. The ministry posts photos of bodies on its website to help families attempting to locate loved ones. Some are decomposed and blackened. Some are missing limbs and teeth.
Only 25 bodies have been identified, the Health Ministry said.
Israel and Hamas earlier exchanged 20 living hostages for more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners and detainees.
Ceasefire’s second phase
A Hamas delegation led by chief negotiator Khalil Al-Hayya arrived in Cairo to follow up the implementation of the ceasefire deal with mediators and other Palestinian groups.
The next stages are expected to focus on disarming Hamas, Israeli withdrawal from additional areas it controls in Gaza, and future governance of the devastated territory. The US plan proposes the establishment of an internationally backed authority.
Hamas spokesman Hazem Kassem said late Saturday that the group has begun discussions to “solidify its positions.” He reiterated that Hamas won’t be part of the ruling authority in a postwar Gaza, and called for the prompt establishment of a body of Palestinian technocrats to run day-to-day affairs.
For now, “government agencies in Gaza continue to perform their duties, as the (power) vacuum is very dangerous,” he said.
The Israel-Hamas war has killed more than 68,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count. The ministry maintains detailed casualty records that are seen as generally reliable by UN agencies and independent experts. Israel has disputed them without providing its own toll.
Thousands more people are missing, according to the Red Cross.
Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 people in the attack that sparked the war.

Trump says Israel-Hamas ceasefire still in place after Gaza strikes
October 20, 2025
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said Sunday that the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was still in effect after the Israeli military carried out deadly strikes on Gaza over apparent truce violations by the Palestinian armed group.
“Yeah, it is,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One when asked if the ceasefire was still in place. He also suggested that Hamas leadership was not involved in any alleged breaches and instead blamed “some rebels within.”
“But either way, it’s going to be handled properly. It’s going to be handled toughly, but properly,” Trump added.
Israel said it had resumed enforcing the Gaza ceasefire after it struck Hamas positions Sunday, having accused the group of targeting its troops in the most serious violence since the nine-day-old truce began.
Gaza’s civil defense agency, which operates under Hamas authority, said at least 45 people had been killed across the territory in Israeli strikes. Israel’s military said it was looking into the reports of casualties.
Trump expressed hope that the ceasefire he helped broker would hold.
“We want to make sure that it’s going to be very peaceful with Hamas,” he said.
“As you know, they’ve been quite rambunctious. They’ve been doing some shooting, and we think maybe the leadership isn’t involved in that.”
Shortly before Trump’s comments, his vice president, JD Vance, downplayed the renewed violence in Gaza, telling reporters there would be “fits and starts” in the truce.
“Hamas is going to fire on Israel. Israel is going to have to respond,” he said.
“So we think that it has the best chance for a sustainable peace. But even if it does that, it’s going to have hills and valleys, and we’re going to have to monitor the situation.”
The truce in the Palestinian territory, which took effect on October 10, halted more than two years of devastating war that has seen Israel kill tens of thousands and reduce much of Gaza to rubble, after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack.
The deal established the outline for hostage and prisoner exchanges, and was proposed alongside an ambitious roadmap for Gaza’s future. But it has quickly faced challenges to its implementation.
Vance called on Gulf Arab countries to establish a “security infrastructure” in order to ensure that Hamas is disarmed, a key part of the peace deal.
“The Gulf Arab states, our allies, don’t have the security infrastructure in place yet to confirm that Hamas is disarmed,” he said.
Vance said that a member of the Trump administration was “certainly” going to visit Israel “in the next few days” to monitor the situation.
He did not confirm who that would be, but said “it might be me.”

Tunnels, cages, pits: Relatives of Gaza hostages recount dire conditions in captivity
October 20, 2025
TEL AVIV: Relatives of the last Israeli hostages released from Gaza after two years in captivity said their loved ones endured harrowing conditions, with some reportedly held in cages, pits or underground tunnels.
Last week, Hamas freed all 20 surviving hostages as agreed in a US-brokered ceasefire deal with Israel.
Among them was Omri Miran.
“At the beginning, there were five hostages in a cage measuring 1.8 meters by 1.6 meters (six feet by five),” his brother Boaz Miran told Israel Hayom newspaper.
“You can’t stand up in there, you have to bend.”
Fellow hostage Guy Gilboa Dalal was 24 at the time of his abduction in the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas that triggered the war.
He was held captive by Palestinian militants together with his childhood friend Evyatar David.
In August, Hamas released a propaganda video showing David severely malnourished and visibly weakened as he was seen digging his own grave inside a tunnel.
“We have all seen the video of Evyatar David in captivity — he was nothing but skin and bones,” said Guy Gilboa Dalal’s brother Gal.
“Guy was in exactly the same condition,” he told AFP.
“Hamas starved them in order to turn them into visible examples of hunger,” he said, referring to the food scarcity that resulted from a blockade imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip earlier this year after a previous ceasefire broke down.
UN-backed experts reported in August that part of the territory was facing famine, a claim disputed by Israel.
The hostage’s brother also described psychological abuse.
“They were told multiple lies — that the Israeli army was looking for them in order to kill them. They were shown other hostages who, they were told, had been deliberately killed by Israeli forces,” Gal Gilboa Dalal said.
“They have a very long road ahead of them, physically and mentally,” he added.
Contacted by AFP, a Hamas official speaking on condition of anonymity said the Palestinian Islamist movement and its allies “treated the detainees under their custody in accordance with the teachings of Islam, in a very ethical and humane manner.”
The official said the hostages “lived in the same conditions as their guards” and received “medical and psychological care and food according to what was available in Gaza.”
“No captive was subjected to insults or torture... unlike the treatment of Palestinian prisoners by (Israel),” the official claimed.
While none of the 20 former hostages has yet spoken publicly, their relatives have relayed details of their captivity.
- Without oxygen -
In The Times of Israel on Wednesday, Tami Braslavski said her son Rom Braslavski had been flogged and beaten between April and July “with objects I won’t even mention.”
Avinatan Or, who was held alone for two years, once attempted to escape but was caught and placed in a cage handcuffed, said his father Yaron.
“It was a wire enclosure 1.8 meters high, as long as a mattress plus a little more. You could call it a cage,” he told Israel’s public radio.
Also speaking to the national broadcaster, the father of former hostage Yosef Haim Ohana said his son “spent several days in an underground pit with six other captives, without enough room to sit or lie down and with barely enough air to survive.”
“(Their captors) put seven men in one pit,” said Avi Ohana. “They couldn’t sit, only lean against the wall while standing. There was no oxygen.”
Hamas and other Palestinian Islamist groups abducted 251 hostages from Israel on October 7, 2023 and took them to the Gaza Strip, both living and dead.
More than 200 of them were returned to Israel during two ceasefires in late 2023 and early 2025, or were rescued in Israeli army operations.
At the start of October, there were still 48 living and dead hostages in Gaza, including the remains of an Israeli soldier killed in 2014.
Under the terms of a US-brokered ceasefire that entered into force on October 10, Hamas and its allies released the 20 last living hostages.
In the days since, it has so far returned 12 bodies out of the 28 it was still holding.
Israel said it had released 1,968 Palestinian prisoners and detainees in exchange for the last living hostages, and has also handed over 150 bodies of Palestinians in return for the remains of 10 deceased Israeli hostages.
Remains of two other hostages returned were that of a Nepalese student and a Thai farmworker.

Israel army says two soldiers killed in southern Gaza on Sunday
October 19, 2025
JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said two soldiers were killed in combat in southern Gaza on Sunday, as it carried out a series of strikes in the area, accusing Hamas of violating the ceasefire.
Major Yaniv Kula, 26, and Staff Sergeant Itay Yavetz, 21, “fell during combat in the southern Gaza Strip,” the military said, the first Israeli fatalities since the ceasefire took effect on October 10.
The Israeli military said Sunday it had resumed enforcing a ceasefire in Gaza.
“In accordance with the directive of the political echelon, and following a series of significant strikes in response to Hamas’ violations, the IDF has begun the renewed enforcement of the ceasefire,” the military said in a statement.
“The IDF will continue to uphold the ceasefire agreement and will respond firmly to any violation of it.”

Israeli forces blow up Palestinian apartment in Tubas
October 19, 2025
LONDON: Israeli forces demolished a residential apartment in the northern occupied West Bank city of Tubas as troops on Sunday launched a large-scale raid for a second consecutive day.
Forces stormed an apartment building, forcibly removed its residents, and planted explosives before detonating them, resulting in an explosion that was heard across the city, according to the Wafa news agency.
Israeli forces bulldozed parts of the main square in Tubas, damaged private properties, and converted several homes into military posts after forcing residents to evacuate. Forces also blocked the southern entrance to Tubas with dirt mounds, detaining several Palestinians for field interrogations, Wafa added.
Tubas and the northern Jordan Valley have faced frequent Israeli military incursions recently, leading to home demolitions, raids, and detentions. Israel has maintained a military occupation of the West Bank since June 1967, which is considered illegal under international law.
Additionally, Israel has pursued a policy of expanding settlements in the territory, which observers view as a significant obstacle to resolving the conflict and establishing a Palestinian state.

Palestinian prisoner from Jenin refugee camp dies in Israeli detention
October 19, 2025
LONDON: A Palestinian detainee died at Israel’s Assaf Harofeh Hospital on Sunday, the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, and the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society announced.
Israeli forces had arrested Mahmoud Talal Abdullah, 49, on Feb. 1 in the Jenin refugee camp, which has been the site of Israeli military operations since January.
The PPS said that Abdullah’s health had severely deteriorated following his arrest, and it was eventually confirmed that he had cancer. He was transferred from Megiddo Prison to Gilboa Prison and later to the Ramla Prison clinic.
Israeli authorities kept him in detention, despite confirming his advanced-stage cancer, and he died the day after being transferred to Assaf Harofeh Hospital, the PPS added.
Abdullah had spent two years in Israeli prisons during the Al-Aqsa Intifada, which lasted from 2000 to 2005.
The PPS said that Abdullah’s death added to the “series of crimes carried out by the Israeli occupation against Palestinian detainees as part of its ongoing genocidal war,” reported the Palestine News Agency.
His death raised to 79 the number of known prisoners and detainees who have died since the Israeli action in Gaza began in 2023.

UK military to get powers to shoot down drones near bases
20 October 2025
Joe Pike
British soldiers will be granted new powers to shoot down drones threatening military bases.
The plans, to be unveiled by Defence Secretary John Healey in a speech on Monday, are intended to allow troops to take faster, more decisive action.
Four British airbases used by US forces reported mystery drone sightings last year, while drones have disrupted airspace across Europe a number of times in recent months.
The new powers will only apply to military sites, but could be extended to civilian locations such as airports.
Healey is set to announce the introduction of a "kinetic option", first reported by the Daily Telegraph, that would enable British troops or Ministry of Defence (MoD) police to shoot drones posing a threat to a military site in the UK.
Existing protocol mandates soldiers divert drones or disrupt their GPS signal using counter-drone equipment.
Shooting down an unidentified drone is only allowed in extreme circumstances.
RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall, in Suffolk, RAF Feltwell in Norfolk and RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire all reported drone incursions in November last year.
About 60 RAF personnel were sent to assist the US Air Force in its investigation.
Neither US nor UK officials have said who might have been behind the drone activity.
The airbases have strategic significance for the US military. It recently deployed F-22A fighter jets to RAF Lakenheath, days after the US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites in June.
Recent drone sightings across the European Union prompted a leaders' summit in Denmark earlier this month.
Several EU member states have backed plans for a multi-layered "drone wall" to quickly detect, track and destroy Russian drones.
Twenty Russian drones crossed into Poland in September while Russian MiG-31 jets entered Estonian airspace later in the month. Russia has denied or downplayed the incursions.
Other recent drones sightings have also forced numerous European airports to close, including across two consecutive days in Munich, Germany.
Airports in Denmark and Norway also shut after unidentified drones were spotted near airport and military airspaces.
Russia denied any involvement, while Danish authorities said there was no evidence Moscow was involved.

Chancellor says Brexit deal caused long-term damage to economy
20 October 2025
Faisal Islam
Rachel Reeves chose to stress the long-term damage done to the UK economy by the 2020 Brexit deal, in her remarks at a key international economic committee at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
In remarks published this weekend, the chancellor told the world's leading finance ministers and central bankers: "The UK's productivity challenge has been compounded by the way in which the UK left the European Union."
She quoted the OBR's calculation of a 4% long-term hit relative to remaining in the EU, and said the UK "acknowledges this" in seeking stronger trade ties.
Labour had been reluctant to stress arguments about economic downsides from Brexit.
However, since its conference last month, ministers have been increasingly strident in making such arguments.
The open use of this argument in the most high-level global economic policy council, including the G7, China, India, the EU and European Central Banks, would have been unsurprising around the table. It confirms a notable change of emphasis, domestically.
It is expected to become a key part of the government's argument in the run-up to the Budget on 26 November, where a large part of the need for new measures - expected to be tax rises - will be down to a downgrade to long-term UK productivity.
The Office for Budget Responsibility will be expected to spell out in detail why any downgrade has occurred, when it publishes its forecast at next month's Budget.
Brexit is expected to feature. External economists have pointed to a fall in investment amid uncertainty after the referendum, as well as an underperformance on goods trade. Others point to robust services trade, and new freedoms to do trade deals around the world.
The issue is sensitive right now with government deciding on negotiating positions for the Brexit "reset" including scrapping most post-Brexit checks on food and farm trade, and helping UK manufacturers join consortia to bid for Europe's surging defence budgets.
European ministers urged maximum ambition in the talks to help mitigate the impact of trade wars elsewhere in the world.
Reeves announced tax rises worth £40bn a year at her first Budget last November, including hikes to payroll taxes paid by employers, and insisted she would not have to repeat the move in subsequent years.
But the chancellor is now facing the prospect of another repair job to the public finances.
The Conservatives opened up a clear dividing line on the issue at their conference, pledging to slash public spending by £47bn a year if they win the next election through cuts to welfare, the civil service and foreign aid.

Russian journalist returns home from Baku after months under arrest
20 Oct, 2025
A Russian journalist detained in Azerbaijan earlier this year has been released and is returning home, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.
Maria Zakharova, the ministry’s spokeswoman, confirmed that Igor Kartavykh – editor-in-chief of Sputnik Azerbaijan news agency – boarded a flight to Moscow after being cleared to leave the country.
Kartavykh was detained in June following a police raid on Sputnik’s Baku office.
Azerbaijani authorities charged him with fraud and illegal business activity, accusations the media outlet called “absurd.”
Zakharova said Russian diplomats had maintained contact with officials in Baku throughout the case and that Kartavykh had been placed under house arrest before his release.
“Kartavykh has been released from custody and has flown to Russia,” Zakharova told TASS on Sunday.
Kartavykh confirmed that he had landed in Moscow, telling RIA Novosti: “I feel fine – I’m glad to be back home.”
Relations between Russia and Azerbaijan deteriorated after an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 crashed on December 25, 2024, near Aktau, Kazakhstan, killing all 38 people on board. The aircraft had been damaged during its approach to the Russian city of Grozny amid Ukrainian drone activity.
Further escalation followed a Russian law enforcement raid in Ekaterinburg earlier this year that led to the deaths of two Azerbaijani nationals identified as suspected gang members.
Kremlin foreign-policy aide Yury Ushakov said the decision to free Kartavykh was made ahead of meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Dushanbe earlier in October. He added that the development was part of a reciprocal arrangement, under which Mammadali Agayev, an Azerbaijani national detained in Moscow on embezzlement charges, was also released.
During his meeting with Aliyev, Putin commented on the tragedy, stating that the crash was most likely triggered when a Russian missile self-destructed near the aircraft during an air-defense response to a Ukrainian attack. He promised appropriate compensation for the victims and accountability for any misconduct.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to trade, humanitarian, and regional cooperation, pledging to continue dialogue “in the spirit of partnership and alliance.”

FBI agents from '93 WTC attack blast Mamdani for embracing radical imam
October 19, 2025
Two retired FBI agents who investigated the 1993 World Trade Center bombing told Fox News Digital New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is "foolish" to campaign with an imam linked to the attack's mastermind.
Mamdani attended prayers Friday at Masjid at-Taqwa on Fulton Street in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, later posting a smiling photo with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, a Brooklyn cleric who served as a character witness for the mastermind of the bombing and has been a longtime defender of convicted terrorists, raising funds for their legal defenses.
"Today at Masjid At-Taqwa, I had the pleasure of meeting with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, one of the nation’s foremost Muslim leaders and a pillar of the Bed-Stuy community," wrote Mamdani, who was a toddler when terrorists parked a bomb-laden van in the garage beneath the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
Retired FBI agent Frank Pellegrino, who investigated the Feb. 26, 1993 attack, said seeing the frontrunner to be the city's next mayor with Wahhaj left him concerned.
"Zohran Mamdani’s embrace of Siraj Wahhaj is an example of Mamdani’s ignorance of history. Either he doesn’t know who Wahhaj is or he doesn’t care. Whichever it is, Mamdani looks foolish," Pellegrino said.
John Anticev, another retired FBI agent who was the lead case agent on the 1993 attack, told Fox News Digital Mamdani should know better than to court an endorsement from someone like Wahhaj.
"Everybody who is in politics should be aware of the people whose endorsement they’re getting," Anticev said. "Imam Siraj Wahhaj has been a cleric who has endorsed a radical agenda."
Wahhaj, born Jeffrey Kearse, founded the Brooklyn mosque in 1981 and has a long history of controversy. Following the World Trade Center attack, prosecutors noted he sponsored appearances by Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, the so-called "Blind Sheikh" who was later convicted of masterminding the plot. Wahhaj wasn’t charged with any crimes and has denied involvement in the attack. Wahhaj also raised legal-defense funds for El Sayyid Nosair, who assassinated Rabbi Meir Kahane in 1990 and was also convicted of seditious conspiracy in connection with the 1993 bombing.
Wahhaj didn’t respond to a request for comment.
In court, Wahhaj served as a character witness for Abdel Rahman, calling him a "respected scholar." In witness testimony, he also admitted raising legal defense funds for Nosair, who was initially acquitted in the killing of Kahane, but is now serving a life sentence.
For Muslims who oppose Wahhaj’s ideological interpretation of political Islam, called Islamism, Mamdani’s alliance with Wahhaj is a disturbing window into what his mayoral term could bring, with his allegiances to groups and leaders with Islamist sympathies and anti-American and anti-semitic views.
Muslim scholar Dalia Ziada, Washington, D.C., coordinator and research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy, said Wahhaj represents the same Islamist ideology that fueled decades of extremism in the Middle East.
"I am particularly concerned to see mosques used as political rallying platforms in the free and democratic United States," she said. "By embracing Wahhaj, Zohran Mamdani is sidelining moderate Muslims and normalizing an extremist ideology that once inspired terror on American soil and still fuels radicalization within segments of the Muslim community today."
Soraya Deen, founder of the Muslim Women Speakers Movement and a co-founder of the Clarity Coalition, a network of Muslims, ex-Muslims and allies challenging Islamist extremism, heard Wahhaj for the first time 20 years ago in a talk to Muslim youth in Los Angeles.
"I was stunned and bewildered by his call to destroy America, and make Islam great," she said.
Deen called the photo of Mamdani with Wahhaj disturbing, noting, "A theologian spewing hatred for the United States — and Mamdani smiling beside him, calling him ‘one of the nation’s foremost Muslim leaders’ — is dangerous for America and dangerous for Muslims."
In the photo, there isn’t a woman to be seen, because Wahhaj also practices the interpretation of Islam that denies women access to the main hall of mosques, believing they would sexually tempt the men praying inside. Deen said, "Despite the gender jihad women are facing in the Muslim world, Mamdani poses for a photo op that emboldens the men suppressing women’s rights."
In June, a political action committee supporting Mamdani, "New Yorkers for Lower Costs," accepted $100,000 donations from the "Unity and Justice Fund," a political action committee tied to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a group designated an unindicted coconspirator in the trial of five Holy Land Foundation leaders. The five leaders were convicted of funneling about $12.4 million to Hamas and sentenced to decades in prison. Mamdani has included sympathetic lyrics about the "Holyland Five" in a rap. Earlier this year, Nihad Awad, a co-founder of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and a close ally of Wahhaj, said he was "happy" about the Oct. 7, 2023, rampage by Hamas terrorists into Israel.
Similarly, Wahhaj has preached a philosophy of exploiting America’s democracy to further a conquest for Islam. In 1991, according to a videotape of the event, Wahhaj told a gathering of Muslims: "I just want to say this. Brothers and sisters, in my opinion what the Muslims do in America will have a profound effect on Muslims everywhere on this earth. As long as you remember that if you get involved with politics, you have to be very careful that your leader is for Allah. You don't get in politics because it's the American thing to do. You get involved in politics because politics can be a weapon to use in the cause of Islam."
In 2011, Wahhaj urged Muslims to donate to the legal defense of Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist dubbed "Lady Al Qaeda" for attempting to kill U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
"I think that she is innocent," he told a Worcester, Massachusetts, fundraiser. "There’s reasonable doubt, and by law, if there’s reasonable doubt, you have to acquit."
Siddiqui, who served as a courier to Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, the mastermind of the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, is serving an 86-year sentence at a Texas federal prison for attempted murder and multiple other felonies.
In a 1992 talk, Wahhaj declared that if American Muslims united, "you wouldn’t have to vote for Bush or Clinton… we’d elect our own emir and give allegiance to him."
Three years later, he shared his views on the U.S., saying, "You know what this country is? It’s a garbage can. Filthy. Filthy and sick."
Former U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Dr. Zuhdi Jasser witnessed a keynote address by Wahhaj in 1995 at the Islamic Society of North America conference, where the imam held up a Qur’an and declared his wish to replace the U.S. Constitution with Islamic law.
"There’s nothing more clarifying on the Islamist extremism and dangers of Zohran Mamdani than his friendship with known anti-American jihadi Imam Siraj Wahhaj," said Jasser, now president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy. "Mamdani’s fealty to one of America’s most radicalizing clerics tells you everything you need to know."
A convert, Wahhaj, 75, rose to prominence as a bridge between immigrant Muslim leaders and America’s Black Muslim converts. He has headlined fundraisers for groups linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, including the alphabet soup of organizations that experts consider legacy groups for the Muslim Brotherhood: the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), and the Muslim American Society (MAS).
In 2003, he told the Wall Street Journal that a society ruled by strict Islamic law, where adulterers are stoned and thieves’ hands are cut off, "would be superior to American democracy."
In talks, Wahhaj denounced the U.S. government as "controlled by Shaitan," the Arabic word for the devil, urged Muslims not to befriend "non-believers," condemned homosexuality as "a disease of this society," and supported Islamic laws that punish sex outside of marriage with 100 lashes and stoning. He denounced Muslims befriending non-Muslims, saying, "Woe to the Muslims who pick kafirs," or non-Muslims, "for friends."
Wahhaj even instructed Muslims to bar their children from making friends outside the faith.
"Don’t you know our children are surrounded by kafirs?" he said. "I’m telling you, making the hearts of our children corrupt, dirty, foul. It’s clear, the principles are clear. Birds of a feather, they say, flock together. And so, when our Muslims hang out with the non-Muslim, you become just like them. You talk just like them. You do what they do, you dress the way they dress, you act the way they act, you want to be just like them, because their hearts are corrupt, and now they’re corrupting your heart."
His personal life has also been shadowed by scandal. In 2018, three of Wahhaj’s children were arrested after authorities discovered 11 malnourished children living in a New Mexico compound where one of his grandchildren had died during an attempted exorcism.
The embrace of such a figure has ignited debate over Mamdani’s judgment and the Democratic Party’s tolerance for radical associations. Wahhaj remains a revered figure among some Islamist activists, including Linda Sarsour, who in 2017 called him "a mentor" and "my favorite person in the room." Sarsour left the Women’s March, which she co-founded, amid accusations of antisemitism. She has led many of the anti-Israel marches since the Oct. 7 attack, leading chants of claiming Israel "from the river to the sea."
For reform-minded Muslims, however, the image of a rising American politician celebrating Wahhaj carries grim symbolism.
"It sends the wrong message to moderate Muslims who are working hard to separate faith from extremism," said Ziada. "And it tells the broader American public that those aspiring to lead this country have forgotten what extremist ideology once did to New York’s skyline."

Trump taps Detroit entrepreneur Mark Savaya, who boosted Muslim turnout, as special envoy to Iraq
Oct 20, 2025
President Donald Trump on Sunday named Detroit-area entrepreneur Mark Savaya, who helped boost Muslim American turnout for his campaign, as special envoy to Iraq — underscoring the administration’s outreach to Middle Eastern communities in key swing states.
"I’m pleased to announce Mark Savaya will serve as Special Envoy to the Republic of Iraq," Trump wrote on Truth Social, praising Savaya’s "deep understanding of the Iraq-U.S. relationship" and his regional connections that "will help advance the interests of the American people."
"Mark was a key player in my campaign in Michigan, where he, and others, helped secure a record vote with Muslim Americans. Congratulations, Mark!" Trump added.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House for additional comment on the appointment.
The announcement comes a week after Trump signed a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas that led to the release of the remaining living hostages and the return of some victims’ remains.
After signing the historic agreement that ended two years of fighting in Gaza, Trump celebrated what he called "peace in the Middle East."
"At long last, we have peace in the Middle East, and it's a very simple expression, peace in the Middle East," Trump said during remarks at Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, flanked by dozens of world leaders.
"We've heard it for many years, but nobody thought it could ever get there. And now we're there," he added.
"This is the day that people across this region and around the world have been working, striving, hoping and praying for," Trump went on. "With the historic agreement we have just signed, those prayers of millions have finally been answered. Together, we have achieved the impossible."
According to Trump, mediators will soon begin work on phases two, three and four of the 20-point peace plan.
"This breakthrough that we're here to celebrate tonight is more than the end of the war in Gaza — it's, with God's help, the new beginning for an entire beautiful Middle East," Trump said.
He expressed optimism that more Arab and Muslim-majority nations would join the Abraham Accords — a series of normalization deals with Israel — while criticizing the Biden administration for failing to expand the agreements.
During Trump’s first term, Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates joined the Abraham Accords.
Trump said he believed the deal would mark an end to "terror" in the region. "We want to get rid of the terror and get on to other things. There are many other things in life that are so good," he said.

Trump ends aid to Colombia and calls country's leader a 'drug leader'
Oct 20, 2025
Ana Faguy
President Donald Trump said the US will no longer offer subsidies to Colombia, one of the country's closest South American allies.
The US president announced the decision in a Truth Social post on Sunday, labelling Colombia's President Gustavo Petro as "an illegal drug leader" who has "strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs, in big and small fields, all over Colombia".
His comments come after Petro accused the US of committing "murder" when it carried out a military strike on a boat in Colombian territorial waters in September.
The move is the latest in a string of escalating tensions between the US and countries in Latin America, as the US military continues to strike ships in the Caribbean Sea it alleges carry drugs.
Trump said because the US offers "large scale payments and subsidies" and Petro "does nothing" to stop the drug production, the US will no longer offer "payment or subsidies" to Colombia. According to a government website, the US provided over $740m (£551m) in aid to Colombia in 2023. It is unclear if all of that aid will stop, or when.
In September, for the first time since 1996, the US declared that Colombia had failed to uphold its drug trafficking promises, and is ineligible for aid as defined in the Foreign Assistance Act. But the state department included a waiver that allowed Colombia to continue to receive aid.
But following Petro's recent accusation of Americans committing "murder", Trump has escalated matters and says he will halt aid.
Under Petro, cocaine production has reached a record-level and the country has failed to reach its coca eradication goals, the state department said in September.
Petro has said the US violated his country's sovereignty killing a Colombian fisherman with its September attack.
Posting on social media, he said: "The Colombian boat was adrift and had its distress signal up due to an engine failure," when it was struck. He added: "We await explanations from the US government."
"Fisherman Alejandro Carranza had no ties to the drug trade and his daily activity was fishing. The Colombian boat was adrift and had its distress signal up due to an engine failure."
Alejandro Carranza was reportedly killed on 15 September when US forces allegedly fired on his boat while he was fishing the Caribbean.
Trump has defended the ongoing boat attacks, saying they are aimed at stemming the flow of drugs from Latin America into the US, but his government has not provided evidence or details about the identities of the vessels or those on board.
UN-appointed human rights experts have described the US strikes as "extrajudicial executions".
The escalation between Trump and Petro comes on the heels of another attack on a ship in the Caribbean sea.
That attack, which happened on Thursday, is at least the sixth US strike on ships in the Caribbean Sea in recent weeks. At least 27 people were killed in the prior five boat strikes in the waters off Venezuela, according to figures released by the US administration.
The Thursday attack, on a submarine, is the first time survivors have been reported, though the attack also killed two people.
Trump said US intelligence confirmed the vessel was "loaded up with mostly Fentanyl, and other illegal narcotics".
The US president said two people who survived the submarine attack would be returned to their countries of origin, Ecuador and Colombia.
They were transferred to a US Navy ship, a source familiar with the matter told CBS News, the BBC's US partner.
In recent weeks, Trump has ramped up threats against Venezuela's leadership over claims that the country is sending drugs to the US. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has accused Trump of trying to make the South American nation "an American colony".
Trump earlier told reporters that he had authorised the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela, and that he was considering launching attacks on Venezuelan soil.

Why John Bolton case is more serious than those against other Trump critics
Oct 20, 2025
Kayla Epstein
President Donald Trump has made no secret of his desire to see his critics investigated, pressuring the Justice Department to prosecute former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
"We can't delay any longer, it's killing our reputation and credibility," the president wrote last month in a Truth Social post.
"They impeached me twice, and indicted me (5 times!)" he said, referencing the four criminal cases he faced after leaving the White House in 2021 and James's civil case.
Both have since been charged, in cases that many experts have said appear to be politically motivated and difficult to win in court.
But the latest charges against a Trump critic, former national security adviser John Bolton, stand apart, legal specialists and former prosecutors say.
"I would say, comparing Bolton's charges to Comey's and James' is like comparing apples to oranges," said Mark Lesko, a former acting US attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
Bolton has been criminally indicted on federal charges pertaining to the alleged mishandling of classified information. Since leaving the White House in 2019, he has become a vocal Trump critic, going so far as to call him "stunningly uninformed" and unfit for office in his memoir.
Experts say that while there may be political reasons to go after Bolton, the procedures used to secure an indictment and the evidence compiled against him indicate a potentially stronger case than the Justice Department brought against Comey or James.
"This misconduct that's being alleged is both more serious and appears to have occurred over a significant period of time," said Carissa Byrne Hessick, a professor at the University of North Carolina School of Law.
During his time as Trump's national security adviser, and after his 2019 White House departure, prosecutors alleged that Bolton put the country at risk by improperly retaining and transmitting classified information to family members using insecure means, including AOL. Some of the documents were labeled top secret.
The indictment alleges that at one point a hacker gained access to Bolton's account where documents were stored and sent an apparent threat to cause "the biggest scandal since Hillary [Clinton]'s emails were leaked".
Bolton pleaded not guilty during a court appearance on Friday to 18 separate charges of mishandling classified information.
Retribution or a strong case?
The timing of his indictment - coming on the tails of charges against Comey and James - has renewed questions about political pressure on the justice system.
Trump once suggested Bolton belonged in jail, and called him a "sleazebag". Bolton, for his part, wrote a book about his time in the Trump administration that was highly critical of the president.
"There's no question that the timing of this indictment, when combined with others, has raised questions about the strength of these charges, and why these charges are being brought now," said Jamil Jaffer, founder and executive director of the National Security Institute at the George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School.
However, he added, "if the Justice Department is able to prove the facts alleged and demonstrate the information is properly classified, his conduct may very well have violated the law".
Charging such a high-ranking official for mishandling classified documents is "rare" but not unprecedented, said Carrie Cordero, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security.
"Cases that involve classified information present challenges to prosecute, but they can and are brought against both low-level and high-level officials, from time to time," she said.
Similarities to investigations into Trump and Biden
Trump similarly faced charges of improperly storing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and obstructing their return, but that case was ultimately dismissed by a federal judge and negated by his re-election as president.
A special counsel also found that former President Joe Biden improperly stored classified documents from his time as vice president, but did not criminally charge him.
Bolton's case bears similarities to Trump's and Biden's classified documents issues, said Mr Lesko, who also held a top national security role at the Justice Department.
Strict procedures govern the handling of classified documents. To win a conviction, the government must prove that Bolton knew the information he was transmitting was classified, and he had to knowingly transfer it to someone not entitled to receive it.
"Because of the classified nature of the material at issue in this case, we don't have a lot of details about why the government believes things like the diary entries and the other information he communicated by email, and why there were classified," said Mr Jaffer.
A more traditional prosecution
The process by which the Justice Department brought this case will be under scrutiny, after Trump publicly posted his desire to see his political opponents prosecuted and some of those indictments came to fruition.
But Mr Lesko said in Bolton's case, prosecutors seem to have followed protocol.
"The Bolton prosecution and ultimately the indictment seemed to have followed the regular process including the rules and norms within the Department of Justice," he said.
Unlike Comey's brief, two-page indictment, Bolton's was a more "traditional" document that "clearly sets forth the details involving the facts and circumstances here," Mr Lesko said.
"It seems fairly consistent with a long line of cases... where government officials mishandled and transmitted classified material."

George Santos wants to use his newfound freedom to reform prisons
Oct 20, 2025
Grace Eliza Goodwin
George Santos is done with politics for now - instead, he wants to use his newfound freedom to make prisons more humane, he told The Washington Post.
The disgraced Republican US Representative from New York was released from prison on Friday after President Donald Trump commuted his seven-year sentence for wire fraud and identity theft.
"There is nothing more that I want to do than to focus and dedicate my entire life to prison reform," Santos said in a Saturday interview with the Post.
Santos, who was booted from Congress in 2023 after a damning ethics report, told the Post that his experience in federal prison was "dehumanising" and "humbling".
Santos had admitted to stealing the identities of 11 people, including his own family members, was released on Friday night, US media reported.
He embellished much about his biography in the run-up to his election to Congress in 2022.
In the 84 days he served in prison, Santos wrote a handful of columns published on The South Shore Press' website.
He has described the prison system as "broken" with "rotting facilities, and administrators who seem incapable or unwilling to correct it". He said a gaping hole in the ceiling exposed "thick black mold" underneath, and that broken air conditioning forced prisoners to endure sweltering heat.
"The building itself is hardly fit for long-term habitation: sheet metal walls, shoddy construction, the look and feel of a temporary warehouse rather than a permanent facility," Santos wrote.
Santos told the Post that he spoke with Trump on Saturday and informed the president of his mission to get involved in prison reform and to "help his administration achieve that in whichever way I can".
It's not clear how exactly Santos intends to work on prison reform, and his lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BBC.
Santos told CNN's Dana Bash on Sunday that he's not interested in running for office again just yet, at least for the next decade.
"I'm all politicked out," he told Bash.
The Bureau of Prisons responded to a request for comment from BBC saying that it could not answer media inquiries due to the ongoing government shutdown.
A contact for the prison Santos was held in, FCI Fairton in New Jersey, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Santos' allegations of poor conditions and mistreatment.

Trump shares AI video of himself bombing ‘No Kings’ protesters with feces
19 Oct, 2025
US President Donald Trump has mocked the ‘No Kings’ protests, sharing several AI-generated videos on Truth Social, including footage of himself dumping what appears to be feces on the crowds.
A wave of protests against the Trump administration hit the US on Saturday, with massive demonstrations held at more than 2,500 locations across the country.
Protesters accuse the president of abusing his power and undermining democracy, as well as condemning his crackdown on illegal immigrants and deploying the military to American cities on the pretext of fighting rampant crime.
Trump responded by sharing AI-generated videos on social media, including footage originally posted by Xerias, a prolific pro-Trump X account that creates AI-generated meme content.
One of the videos shows the president piloting a ‘King Trump’ warplane that dumps feces on the protesters. It incorporates actual footage posted from the protest in New York by left-wing influencer Harry Sisson, who ends up covered in AI feces.
Another video shared by Trump and originally posted by Vice President J.D. Vance features Trump putting on a crown and cloak before unsheathing a sword.
The clip ends with prominent Democratic lawmakers, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, kneeling before the president – an apparent reference to a 2020 photo-op in which they honored George Floyd.
Trump’s posts received a mixed response, with supporters actively sharing the meme videos, and critics such as Democratic Senator Brian Schatz condemning the videos. “Why would the President post an image on the Internet of airdropping feces on American cities?” he wrote on X.
Sisson reacted early Sunday on X to the video in which he was featured: “Can a reporter please ask Trump why he posted an AI video of himself dropping poop on me from a fighter jet?”
