Governor Arif Mohammed Khan Has Moved Out Of Islam By Offering Prayers At The Lord Ayyappa Temple: Sunni Leader Abdul Hameed Faizi Ambalakkadavu

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed (Photo | EPS)

By MP Prashanth

20th February 2022

KOZHIKODE: Sunni leader Abdul Hameed Faizi Ambalakkadavu has said Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has ‘opened the door out of Islam’ by offering prayers at the Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala as a believer. In a YouTube video, Ambalakkadavu said the governor’s remarks on hijab should not be regarded as a comment by a Muslim. Ambalakkadavu is the working secretary of the Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS), the feeder organisation of the Samastha Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulema.

Quoting the details from the news on the governor’s visit to Sabarimala, Ambalakkadavu said Arif Muhammad Khan has observed all the rituals followed by a faithful Hindu. “As an Indian citizen, he has every right to believe a religion of his choice and to follow the rites,” he said.

“Governor’s name will create an impression that he is a Muslim by faith. He has the name of Prophet Muhammad and Arif is the term that refers to a person who knows Allah very closely,” Ambalakkadavu said. He said Khan has shifted political loyalty many times for personal benefits.

“During the time of Sharia controversy in 1985, he was the leader of the Congress. But he joined the anti-Muslim group that was against Sharia. Later he aligned with the Janata Dal,” Ambalakkadavu said.

He said the governor is deriding Islam hoping that it would fetch him new positions in the BJP.  “It’s a stipulation in Islam that if a Muslim visits the place of worship of other religions, follows their customs and dons their attire, he is out of Islam,” the Sunni said. “It is an unquestionable fact that if one questions the basic tenets of Islam, he will be out of the religion. I am not saying that Arif Muhammad Khan has become a non-Muslim or Kafir. It is up to the religious scholars to pronounce fatwas. I am only referring to laws in Islam,” he said.

Ambalakkadavu said there should not be any confusion about whether Khan, who remarks on hijab and Sharia, is an Islamic scholar or not. His actions are not that of a person within Islam, but of a man who has opened the door out of the religion, he said. It may be recalled that Khan had said that the hijab was not an integral part of the Islamic faith.

'Hindus for Human Rights , A US-Based Civil Society Organisation, Will Continue Lobbying Against India's Treatment Of Muslims'

Sunita Viswanath, executive director of Hindus for Human Rights

----

Karan Thapar

20-02-2022

In a forceful and passionate interview, where both her anger and anguish are clearly visible, Sunita Viswanath, the executive director of Hindus for Human Rights, a US-based civil society organisation, says that her organisation will “certainly intensify and escalate” efforts to lobby the US Congress and Biden Administration to speak out against Hindutva and India’s treatment of minorities and Muslims in particular.

Sunita Viswanath says the Modi government stands for “a fascist India” and added that it’s important for Hindus to combat Hindutva. “The majority community must wake up,” she said. “The fact that Hindus are silent is alarming and dangerous…if Hindus don’t participate, it’s impossible to fight Hindutva.”

In a 30-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Sunita Viswanath explained why her organisation played a lead role, alongside 16 other civil society organisations in the US, in lobbying the US Congress against the treatment of Muslims and minorities in India on January 12 and 26. She said she did this because “the world needs to understand something is wrong in India…  India is on a very dangerous path”.

Speaking further about the two Congressional briefings on India’s treatment of Muslims which she organised, she said: “We are US citizens. We have the power to influence and move US lawmakers and the Biden Administration to speak out.” She added, “It hasn’t happened enough.”

Sunita Viswanath has firmly rejected claims made by the external affairs Ministry’s spokesman, Arindam Bagchi, that the event organisers are biased against India. She said: “India talks of bias? I would say allegations of bias are itself bias.” She said her organisation has a moral duty “to raise awareness of deteriorating democracy and human rights in India”. She added: “We are concerned because we deeply love India.”

She also said she was speaking out in defence of true Hinduism, a religion she loves, which would not condone or accept the othering of Muslims.

Sunita Viswanath specifically attacked and criticised MEA spokesman, Arindam Bagchi, for giving the impression that the Congressional briefings were organised only by the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) and deliberately ignoring the fact 16 other organisations were involved. Her own, Hindus for Human Rights, played a key role. She firmly rejected claims that IAMC is prejudiced and anti-Indian. She said of them: “They are our close partners. We trust them. We have a close partnership. They are not anti-Indian.”

Sunita Viswanath clarified that the invitation to former vice-president Hamid Ansari to speak at the US Congressional briefing was extended by her organisation, Hindus for Human Rights: “I personally phoned Hamid Ansari,” she said. “Our video team went to his home to do the recording.” She said he is “an elderly statesman” adding “he is grace and dignity personified”.

Sunita Viswanath firmly rejected insinuations made by Arindam Bagchi that Ansari spoke with bias against India. She said he spoke in a truthful and balanced way.

The above is a paraphrased precis of Sunita Viswanath’s interview with Karan Thapar for The Wire. Please watch the full interview for a better and complete understanding of Sunita Viswanath’s standpoint. She has spoken with great passion and forcefulness. A precis cannot convey either the depth of her emotions or the detail of her answers.

Top Islamic Assembly In Palestine Describes Israel’s Measures In Occupied Jerusalem As Ethnic Cleansing

A meeting of the Supreme Fatwa Council in Jerusalem.

----

19/February/2022

JERUSALEM, Saturday, February 19, 2022 (WAFA) – The top Islamic assembly in Palestine, the Supreme Fatwa Council, today condemned Israeli government aggression in occupied East Jerusalem, describing it as ethnic cleansing.

It said in a statement following a meeting in Jerusalem headed by its chairman, the Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories, Sheikh Mohammad Hussein, that the Israeli occupiers have escalated their attacks against the Palestinian residents of Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied Jerusalem, including settlers throwing stones at homes, insulting and provoking residents, spraying them with pepper gas, closing streets and alleys, and attacking those who are in the neighborhood.

The Council said that “this aggression is an ethnic cleansing process against the indigenous population to replace them with settlers by the force of arms with the aim of evacuating it from its residents, Judaizing the occupied city of Jerusalem through plans to seize property and thousands of dunums of land, and displace thousands of Palestinians.”

The Fatwa Council also condemned Israeli violations against religious sites, including in the al-Haram al-Sharif (Al-Aqsa Mosque) compound by denying the Waqf department, which oversees the Mosque, the right to do restoration work to prevent water leaks and other problems.

It called on Muslims to be present at Al-Aqsa Mosque at all times to protect it while at the same time denouncing the Israeli settlers’ provocative storming of the third holiest Muslim site, which it said aims at creating new facts on the ground.

“These authorities are continuing their aggression against our people, their holy places, their land and their property, with the aim of emptying the Holy City of its indigenous inhabitants through hideous racist aggression,” said the Islamic Council, calling on domestic and international organizations to intervene to stop what it described as “crimes against the Palestinians,” criticizing the world silence toward these acts, which gave the occupation the green light to continue and escalate its aggression.

Metropolitan Police Chiefs Plunged Into New Racism Row After Muslim Officers Mocked For Taking Prayer Breaks

The Metropolitan Police officers complained they were subjected to Islamophobic abuse at their station canteen as they went to a mosque

----

By Abul Taher

20 February 2022

Britain's biggest police force has been plunged into a new racism row after at least three Muslim officers made a formal complaint against their bosses.

The Metropolitan Police officers complained they were subjected to Islamophobic abuse at their station canteen as they went to a mosque.

When a Muslim police officer at the same station failed to take part in a voluntary team-building exercise on religious grounds, he claims he was ordered to wash police cars as an act of humiliation. When he refused, his sergeant posted a complaint note on his employment file.

The Metropolitan Police officers complained they were subjected to Islamophobic abuse at their station canteen as they went to a mosque

In addition, a ‘health and safety’ rule was brought in at the North London station requiring Muslim officers to put their names on a board if they took a prayer break, even if it was in the building’s multi-faith prayer room.

The MoS understands the PCSOs made the complaint in the presence of members of the Association of Muslim Police and the Metropolitan Black Police Association, which are supporting them. It has emerged just days after Met Commissioner Cressida Dick resigned after London Mayor Sadiq Khan lost confidence in the way she dealt with racism in the force.

In the first incident, which is said to have occurred around October, a sergeant let three officers visit a mosque for Friday prayers. But they were reportedly mocked by a PC, who said it was an excuse to ‘skive off’. The PC said he wished he was a Muslim or a Jew so he could take time off duty as well.

Weeks later, a Muslim PCSO at the same station was asked to join a voluntary team-building exercise, involving weight training, on a Sunday. The officer declined on religious grounds as it would make him sweaty – a state in which he could not pray. He claims the sergeant did not accept this reason and told him to wash police cars. The officer refused as PCSOs never clean cars as they do not use them.

The third complaint relates to Muslim officers performing their ritual daily prayers. Sources said Muslim officers were always allowed to pray at a local mosque or in the station prayer room. The Met declined to comment last night.

Pakistan Reviewing Legal Options In Qandeel Baloch Murder Case, Says Parliamentary Secretary for Law

Qandeel Baloch and Her Killer Brother

----

Dawn.com

February 19, 2022

Parliamentary Secretary for Law Maleeka Bokhari on Saturday said that the state was "reviewing options" in the light of laws and Supreme Court judgements in the murder case of social media star Qandeel Baloch, whose brother was acquitted by the Lahore High Court (LHC) earlier this week.

Her brother Mohammad Waseem was arrested and later sentenced to life in prison by a trial court for strangling her, brazenly telling the press he had no remorse for the slaying because her behaviour was "intolerable".

In a tweet today, Bokhari said, "The state is undertaking a review of legal options in the Qandeel Baloch case in light of law & SC judgments."

Terming "honour killings" a black mark on society, she said the law had been amended to "ensure murderer[s] of women — whether a celebrity or ordinary woman — does not walk free".

Meanwhile, the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) has also announced plans to appeal the verdict before the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Sardar Mahboob, Waseem's layer, confirmed to Dawn on Monday that his client had been acquitted after serving less than six years in prison.

He said that the trial court had "wrongly exercised its power" and sentenced Waseem under the Pakistan Penal Code's Section 311, dealing with fasad-fil-arz (mischief on earth), even though he had been pardoned by the deceased's heirs.

Mahboob went on to say that the trial court had convicted Waseem on the basis of his confession. He added that all the prosecution witnesses were police officials which was not admissible under the law.

The case became the most high profile "honour killing" of recent years — where women are dealt lethal punishment by male relatives for purportedly bringing "shame" to the reputation of a family.

Under a recent law change, perpetrators are no longer able to seek forgiveness from the victim's family — sometimes their own family — and to have their sentences commuted.

However, whether or not a murder is defined as a crime of honour is left to the judge's discretion, meaning killers can theoretically claim a different motive and still be pardoned.

In Baloch's case, her parents initially insisted their son would be given no absolution. But they later changed their minds and said they wanted him to be forgiven. But the trial court had disregarded this and went ahead with the sentence.

Iran regime plans to enrich itself by seizing Baha’i properties, says NGO

By BENJAMIN WEINTHAL

FEBRUARY 19, 2022

The Baha’i International Community (BIC) has announced last week that Iran’s regime is seeking to increase its wealth by confiscating Baha’i properties.

“The seizure by the Execution of Imam Khomeini’s Order [EIKO] of Baha’i properties is a novel and very worrying development for Iranian Baha’is,” said Diane Ala’i, representative of the BIC to the United Nations in Geneva. “This development demonstrates that the highest levels of Iran’s leadership are orchestrating the persecution of the Baha’is in Iran.”

The BIC wrote, “A Revolutionary Court in the province of Semnan has ordered that properties belonging to six Baha’is should be transferred to EIKO. Semnan Province manager for EIKO Mr. Hamid Ahmadi, initiated the action to secure a court order for the confiscations.”

Turkish Cypriot leader receives Organization of Islamic Cooperation delegation

Ahmet Gencturk

19.02.2022

Northern Cyprus’ president on Saturday received a delegation from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the capital Lefkosa, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Presidency said in a statement.

“The Turkish Cypriot people are as sovereign as the Greek Cypriot side because we are co-owners of this island which is our inherent right,” Ersin Tatar told the delegation from the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission led by Haci Ali Acikgul, the senior human rights official at the Turkish Justice Ministry.

Reiterating that it was the Greek Cypriot administration which rejected the UN’s Annan plan in 2004 while the Turkish Cypriots accepted it, he said: “Despite this outcome, the Greek Cypriot side was admitted to the EU, while Turkish Cypriots were left out in the cold.”

When it comes to oil prices, bank on demand not Iran

MICHAEL GLACKIN

February 19, 2022

LONDON: Speculation, according to Henry Ford, was a means of “making of money out of the manipulation of prices, instead of supplying goods and services”. His comment came to mind last week while watching the gyrations of the oil price.

At the start of last week, the market was abuzz with speculation that the US and Iran were close to resurrecting Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. Speculation that the deal could be revived sent oil prices lower, despite geopolitical tensions in Ukraine. Then, a few days later, speculation that a deal was less likely helped drive the price of oil to a seven-year high.

A rapprochement on the nuclear deal, which former US President Donald Trump abruptly abandoned in 2018, would remove sanctions on Iranian oil exports, potentially offering some relief to an increasingly tight market.

PTI feeling the heat from opposition overtures to Tareen

Zulqernain Tahir

February 20, 2022

LAHORE: The Imran Khan government appears to be jittery about Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) disgruntled leader Jehangir Khan Tareen’s purported meetings with the opposition amid their efforts to oust the premier.

On the other hand, the nine-party Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) alliance, as well as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have agreed to bring a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan but are not currently considering a similar move regarding Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser or Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani.

Though some government functionaries are playing down Mr Tareen’s supposedly clandestine meeting with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif, a source privy to the development says the government is indeed wary of ongoing activities in the opposition’s camp, especially the flurry around Mr Tareen.

Former religious affairs minister Mujahid calls for family law reforms after latest unilateral conversion row

BY YISWAREE PALANSAMY

20 Feb 2022

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 20 — Malaysia needs to reform its family laws after the latest case involving a Hindu single mother and her three children who were unilaterally converted in Perlis, former religious affairs minister Datuk Seri Mujahid Yusof Rawa said.

“But, ultimately, these laws must be compassionate, especially in the case of child custody when a parent converts. That is in the spirit of Islam.

“Or else, we will always hear of children being converted by their convert father without the mother’s consent. This paints a negative image of Islam, which prides itself on compassion and the love of the mother,” the Parit Buntar MP was reported saying.

Challenges ahead for Malaysia’s proposed tobacco sales ban to those born after 2005

BY YISWAREE PALANSAMY

20 Feb 2022

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 20 — The government’s announcement of a planned blanket ban on the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products to those born after 2005 is a seemingly “puritan” goal and could prove challenging if alternatives to said products are similarly outlawed, economists opined.

Last month, national news agency Bernama reported Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin as saying that the government plans to ban tobacco products, including vape, for anyone born after 2005.

Like some other Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) countries, he said Malaysia hoped to pass the law this year, to spell the generational end-game to smoking.

FBI: Dearborn mosque fire suspect was not motivated by politics or religion

Niraj Warikoo

Feb 19, 2022

Speaking inside a Dearborn mosque, the head of the FBI Detroit office revealed that its investigation so far into a mosque fire and police shooting last week has shown that the suspect was not motivated by politics, ideology or religion.

Acting Special Agent in Charge of Detroit FBI Josh Hauxhurst addressed congregants Saturday at Al-Huda Islamic Association, a Muslim center on Warren Avenue that was set on fire one week ago. Officials have identified the suspect in the fire as Ahmed Taqi, 37, of Dearborn, whom police said died a few blocks away in Detroit after an exchange of fire with Dearborn police.

"Taqi may be the only one who knows exactly why he set the fire here at the mosque," Hauxhurst said to the crowd. "However, based on evidence collected, interviews conducted to date and law enforcement reports and prior contacts with Taqi, there is no indication Taki was either politically or ideologically motivated. And there is no indication at this point that he's acting as part of a group."

LeBeouf was personally offended during a scene where Eastwood’s character spits on the tank their unit was stationed to protect. According to Eastwood, Pit had to step in and defuse the confrontation before an all-out brawl was about to break loose.

2023: Muslim Group optimistic Igbo presidency will stop Biafra agitation

By Abdulganiyu Alabi,Kaduna

20 February 2022

The United Muslim Ummah League (UMUL) has said electing an Igbo, as president in 2023, will quell the agitations for Biafra nation. The Muslim group, who urged Nigerians from the five geo-political zones to support the Southeast for President of Nigeria, called on Enugu State Governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, to contest for president, because he is a unifier.

In a statement, its National Coordinator, Mallam Abubakar Mustapha, noted that two of the three major tribes in Nigeria; Yoruba and Hausa, had produced presidents. He also added it would be only fair for all political parties to zone power to the Eastern region to avoid unnecessary tension and agitation for secession ahead of the election.
