Report: German Xmas Market Attacker Is Saudi Anti-Islamist Who Shared Pro-Israel Content

21 December 2024

-------------

The suspect in the deadly ramming at a Christmas market in Germany on Friday was an anti-Islam activist who shared pro-Israel content on social media in the wake of the October 7 attacks, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Five people were killed and some 200 injured when an SUV plowed through the festive crowd in Magdeburg. One of the victims was a young child.

Regional premier Reiner Haselhoff said that the suspect is a 50-year-old doctor and was seemingly a lone attacker. He was detained in the wake of the deadly ramming.

According to the Journal report, the suspect, a Saudi national who had moved to Germany in 2006, ran a website and social media channels warning against Islam and discussing women’s rights, as well as posting content in support of Israel.

A German security official familiar with the investigation told the Journal that the suspect had arrived in Germany as an asylum seeker who said he had fled Saudi Arabia due to strict Islamic laws. He was granted refugee status before obtaining permanent residence in the country.

According to the report, the suspect had posted on social media in recent days accusing the German government of allowing the proliferation of Islamization in the country and of ersecuting female Saudi asylum seekers.

An anonymous German official told The Washington Post on Saturday morning that the suspect is believed to have been under the influence of drugs while carrying out the attack.

The local Volksstimme newspaper said reports from the scene indicated the attacker clearly tried “to hit as many people as possible.”

Video footage from the scene showed the driver’s arrest as police with their handguns trained shouted, “Lie down, hands on your back, don’t move!” at the bearded man with glasses who was lying on the ground next to the heavily damaged car.

Police said the vehicle drove “at least 400 meters across the Christmas market” leaving a trail of bloodied casualties, debris and broken glass at the city’s central town hall square.

“My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand by their side and by the side of the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours.”

PM Modi attends opening ceremony of Arabian Gulf Cup, meets Kuwaiti Emir

Dec 22, 2024

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited Kuwait, marking the first visit by an Indian PM in 43 years. PM Modi attended the opening ceremony of the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium as the chief guest where he met Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

"Glad to have met His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al Sabah during the opening ceremony of the Arabian Gulf Cup," wrote PM Modi on X, sharing a photo of their meet.

Earlier, PM Modi addressed the Indian community at the 'Hala Modi' event in Kuwait City. He spoke at the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Indoor Sports Complex, praising the diaspora's contribution to global growth.

PM Modi stated that India could become 'the skill capital of the world.' He also recognized the large Indian presence in Kuwait, calling it a 'mini-Hindustan.'

“Every year, hundreds of Indians come to Kuwait. You have added an Indian touch to Kuwaiti society. You have filled the canvas of Kuwait with the colors of Indian skills. You have mixed the essence of India's talent, technology, and tradition in Kuwait,” PM Modi said.

Minorities Fear Targeted Attacks In Post-Revolution Bangladesh

AFP

-------------

DHAKA: For generations, the small Hindu temple outside the capital in Muslim-majority Bangladesh was a quiet place to pray – before arsonists ripped open its roof this month in the latest post-revolution unrest.

It is only one of a string of attacks targeting religious minorities since a student-led uprising toppled long-time autocratic leader Sheikh Hasina in August.

“We don’t feel safe,” said Hindu devotee Swapna Ghosh in the village of Dhour, where attackers broke into the 50-year-old family temple to the goddess Lakshmi and set fire to its treasured idols on December 7.

“My son saw the flames and doused them quickly,” said temple custodian Ratan Kumar Ghosh, 55, describing how assailants knew to avoid security cameras, so they tore its tin roof open to enter.

“Otherwise, the temple – and us – would have been reduced to ashes.”

Hindus make up about eight percent of the mainly Muslim nation of 170 million people.

In the chaotic days following Hasina’s August 5 ouster there was a string of attacks on Hindus – seen by some as having backed her rule – as well as attacks on Muslim Sufi shrines by Islamist hard-liners.

“Neither I, my forefathers or the villagers, regardless of their faith, have ever witnessed such communal attacks,” temple guardian Ghosh said.

“These incidents break harmony and trust.”

Hasina, 77, fled by helicopter to India, where she is hosted by old allies in New Delhi’s Hindu-nationalist government, infuriating Bangladeshis determined that she face trial for alleged “mass murder.”

Attacks against Hindu temples are not new in Bangladesh, and rights activist Abu Ahmed Faijul Kabir said the violence cannot be regarded out of context.

Under Hasina, Hindus had sought protection from the authorities. That meant her opponents viewed them as partisan loyalists.

“If you analyze the past decade, there has not been a single year without attacks on minorities,” Kabir said, from the Dhaka-based rights group Ain o Salish Kendra.

This year, from January to November, the organization recorded 118 incidents of communal violence targeting Hindus.

August saw a peak of 63 incidents, including two deaths. In November, there were seven incidents.

While that is significantly more than last year – when the group recorded 22 attacks on minorities and 43 incidents of vandalism – previous years were more violent.

In 2014, one person was killed, two women were raped, 255 injured, and 247 temples attacked. In 2016, seven people were killed.

“The situation has not worsened, but there’s been no progress either,” said businessman and Hindu devotee ChandanSaha, 59.

Political rulers had repeatedly “used minorities as pawns,” Saha added.

The caretaker government has urged calm and promised increased security, and accused Indian media of spreading disinformation about the status of Hindus in Bangladesh.

Dhaka’s interim government this month expressed shock at a call by a leading Indian politician – chief minister of India’s West Bengal state Mamata Banerjee – to deploy UN peacekeepers.

Hefazat-e-Islam, an association of Islamic seminaries, has led public protests against India, accusing New Delhi of a campaign aimed at “propagating hate” against Bangladesh. India rejects the charges.

Religious relations have been turbulent, including widespread unrest in November in clashes between Hindu protesters and security forces.

That was triggered by the killing of a lawyer during protests because bail was denied for an outspoken Hindu monk accused of allegedly disrespecting the Bangladeshi flag during a rally.

Bangladeshi Islamist groups have been emboldened to take to the streets after years of suppression.

Muslim Sufi worshippers as well as members of the Baul mystic sect – branded heretics by some Islamists – have also been threatened.

“There’s been a wave of vandalism,” said Syed Tarik, a devotee documenting such incidents.

Muhammad Yunus, the 84-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner appointed the country’s “chief adviser,” has called for dialogue between groups.

Critics say it is not enough.

“To establish a peaceful country where all faiths coexist in harmony, the head of state must engage regularly with faith leaders to foster understanding,” said SukomalBarua, professor of religion at Dhaka University.

Sumon Roy, founder of Bangladesh’s association of Hindu lawyers, said members of the minority were treated as a bloc by political parties.

“They have all used us as tools,” Roy said, explaining that Hindus had been previously threatened both by Hasina’s Awami League and its rival Bangladesh National Party.

“If we didn’t support AL we faced threats, and the BNP blamed us for siding with the AL,” he said. “This cycle needs to end.”

Islamic Extremism in Bangladesh: Dr Yunus Confidently States That Islamic Extremism Will Not Gain Traction

Islamic Extremism in Bangladesh: Dr Muhammad Yunus comments on India’s concerns, ’It’s not about…’ (AP Photo/Sergei Grits)(AP Photo/Sergei Grits)

-------------

Dr Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, has confidently stated that Islamic extremism will not gain traction in the country.

Speaking in an interview with The Economist, he highlighted the determination of the youth and their impartial perspective on religion as the foundation for building a progressive Bangladesh.

Dr Yunus’s remarks came after Bangladesh was named The Economist’s Country of the Year 2024, a recognition given to the nation that has shown remarkable progress over the past year.

This honour followed a historic student-led uprising that brought down Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian government, marking the beginning of a transformative era for the country.

The Economist’s Foreign Editor, Patrick Foulis, spoke to Yunus. Foulis remarked that revolutions could sometimes have negative outcomes, and many outside Bangladesh held concerns.

He mentioned that both American and Indian officials had cautioned about the potential resurgence of Islamic extremism in Bangladesh. He then asked for Dr Yunus’s perspective on this issue and how he planned to reassure people that such problems would not resurface.

“I can assure you that it's not taking place at all. These are very enthusiastic young people. They are very neutral about their religion. They want to create a new Bangladesh. Young people can change the world. It's not about changing on one country or another country,” Dr Yunus said.

Reflecting on the recognition, Dr Yunus expressed pride in Bangladesh's achievements. He noted that the uprising, sparked by students, had created a strong desire to rebuild the nation on a fresh, democratic foundation.

He attributed much of the progress to the involvement of young people, particularly women, who played a significant role in the movement.

“What Bangladesh has done is one example how powerful this Young generation is. Let's pay attention to the young people particularly attention to the young girls. Young girls played a very important role in the Bangladesh apprising,” he added.

A 15-year-old boy gets into a taxi outside Stockholm hiding a loaded gun and asks to be taken to the Israeli embassy. A 13-year-old in Gothenburg is caught firing shots at Israeli defense firm Elbit Systems. At the same facility, a 16-year-old helps to plant home-made explosives outside the main entrance.

Investigators say that all three attacks this year are part of a new trend in which Iran-affiliated actors recruit local criminals, including minors, to strike at Jewish and Israeli targets in Europe. The Iranian mission at the United Nations didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Mumbai mosques to also turn into centres of community education

Dec 21, 2024

When Prophet Muhammad built the mosque in Medina after migrating from Mecca in 622, he made it a community centre, besides a place of worship. The Masjid-E-Nabwi, or the Prophet's mosque in Medina, became a hub of education and training, a centre of justice and economic affairs, a place to host guests and dignitaries, and a treatment centre for the wounded.

Reflecting on the role of a mosque in the Prophet's time, a group of community leaders and activists in the city have decided to unlock the immense potential of these places of worship. Besides maintaining the primary role of mosques as places to offer prayers five times a day and weekly Friday sermons, they will be used to conduct several activities aimed at community development.

Initiated by Global Care Foundation, an NGO working to get undertrials, mostly first-time offenders, released on bail, the move received wide appreciation at a function held at the iconic Islam Gymkhana at Marine Lines this past week. "Working to get undertrials released and interacting with them and their families showed us some shocking realities. Most of those accused of committing petty crimes and being involved in drug peddling and addiction are Muslims. Why can't the community open up their mosques and start counselling centres, guidance, and libraries there?" argued the Foundation's President, Abid Ahmed Kundalam.

Many are livid at the gross underutilisation of the mosques. So much so that Mufti Ashfaque Kazi of the iconic Juma Masjid of Bombay near Crawford Market said, "We are not following the Prophetic way of utilising mosques... Have we forgotten how mosques during the Prophet's time held educational, diplomatic, and even medical activities?" asked Kazi.

India Child Marriage Crackdown Reaches Nearly 5,000 Arrests

December 22, 2024

GUWAHATI, India: A crackdown on illegal child marriages in India’s northeast has resulted in nearly 5,000 arrests, after 416 people were detained in the latest police sweep, a minister said Sunday.

“We will continue to take bold steps to end this social evil,” Himanta Biswa Sarma, chief minister of Assam state, said in a statement.

“Assam continues its fight against child marriage,” he added, saying raids have been carried out overnight and that those arrested would be produced in court on Sunday.

India is home to more than 220 million child brides, according to the United Nations, but the number of child weddings has fallen dramatically this century.

‘Communal Muslim alliance’ behind Rahul and Priyanka’s Wayanad wins, says CPI(M) leader

by Shaju Philip

December 22, 2024

Communist Party of India (Marxist) politburo member A Vijayaraghavan Saturday alleged that a “communal Muslim alliance” was behind the victory of congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat.

Addressing the CPI(M) Wayanad district conference at SulthanBathery, Vijayaraghavan said: “Two persons have gone from Wayanad (Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi). With whose support?  With the strong support of the communal Muslim alliance. Without their support, was it possible for Rahul Gandhi to reach Delhi. He is the Opposition leader. Who were in the front and back rows of the processions of Priyanka Gandhi? The worst extremist elements in the minorities were in them. They were with the Congress leadership. Without the support of the communal Muslim alliance, was it possible for Rahul Gandhi to reach Delhi,’’ he said.

Vijayaraghavan’s attack on Congress linking the party with Muslim organisations goes with the line the party had adopted after the 2014 April Lok Sabha elections. CPI(M) had tried to woo the Muslim vote bank in Kerala by highlighting the Citizenship Amendment Act and Palestine issues during the Lok Sabha elections held this April, but the election outcome witnessed Hindu voters deserting the CPI (M) led LDF.

Big Tension For India As Pakistan Set To Train Bangladesh’s Military

By Victor Dasgupta

December 22, 2024

New Delhi: The Pakistan Army appears to be making a comeback in Bangladesh after 53 years, with reports indicating that senior military officials, including a general, may soon visit the country. To recall, in 1971, the Pakistani Army was driven out of East Pakistan. According to a News18 report, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Pakistan’s Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, has sent a proposal to Bangladesh where he expressed his desire to visit Bangladesh’s military training institutes, including the Infantry and Tactics School and the Defense Services Command. He has also expressed his desire to address young officers at the Bangladesh Army Staff College as a guest speaker.

Bangladesh has reportedly accepted the proposal, and initial discussions about the visit have already taken place, though the exact dates have not yet been announced.

Since Sheikh Hasina was forcefully ousted from power and Muhammad Yunus held the top position, Bangladesh has been drawing closer to Pakistan. In 2022, Sheikh Hasina had denied permission for the Pakistani warship PNS Taimur to dock at Chittagong. However, reports suggest that Bangladesh is preparing for a joint naval exercise with the Pakistani Navy in the Bay of Bengal.

Student-advisers in interim government of Bangladesh gaining higher profile

December 21, 2024

India’s “strong protest” in response to the now deleted Facebook post carrying an enlarged map of Bangladesh that included neighbouring Indian territories, has drawn attention to the student-advisers of the interim government of Bangladesh. The Facebook post that drew MEA’s response appeared on the page of Mahfuj Alam, a student-adviser who was inducted into the Advisory Council of the interim government in November.

Mahfuj Alam came to the limelight when he accompanied Professor Yunus during his September tour of the United States. At a Clinton Global Initiative event in New York, Prof. Yunus introduced Mr. Alam saying, “He is known to be the brain behind the whole revolution.” Subsequently, Mr. Alam has been spotted in several important engagements of Prof. Yunus including the latest visit to Cairo where Bangladesh participated in the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation summit. During this week’s visit to Cairo he posted photographs of him meeting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, Turkish Foreign Minister HakanFidan and an adviser of the Turkish government.

Mr. Alam was appointed into the top level of Advisers to the interim government on November 11 and does not have any particular Ministry under him but he has made his presence felt in the power structure with his frequent remarks on social media that increasingly has set the public discourse in Dhaka. Soon after being sworn in to the top-most body of advisers of the interim government, he announced that the portrait of the founder of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had been removed from Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban, the official residence of the President of Bangladesh.

In a post on December 4, Mr. Alam gave a hint of the prevailing sentiment among the student-advisers in the interim government saying, “Indophiles, or Indian allies in this part of Bengal, are thinking that things are going to cool down and bypassing the July uprising and the fascist atrocities won’t cost them anything. It’s a wrong idea. People are watching everything!”

Iranian Priest, MobedMehrabanPouladi'sHistoric Visit To IndiaTo Meet Parsis Here And Strengthen Relationships

Dec 22, 2024

MUMBAI: In the late 15th century, around 700 years after they first arrived in India, a Parsi from Gujarat, Nariman Hoshang, travelled back to Iran. His mission _ to meet Zoroastrian priests in Iran and learn from them about their religion’s customs, traditions and practices (Revayats). Over the next 300 years, many more exchanges between priests in India and Iran occurred.

Now, over five centuries later, a priest from Iran, MobedMehrabanPouladi, president of the Council of Iranian Mobeds (pirests) is on his first official visit to India to meet Parsis here and strengthen relationships. As president, he heads the highest religious authority for Iranian Zoroastrians.

Pouladi is on a ten-day visit to Mumbai and south Gujarat accompanied by his translator, professor SaloumehGholami from Cambridge University.Historically, there has always been a connection between Iranian and Indian Zoroastrians. But for many years, there was a gap between the two communities. Although there have been many exchanges in the past, this is the first time since Nariman Hoshang’s journey that I decided to travel on an official visit to India and see how the Parsis here perform their rituals and ceremonies,’’ Pouladi told TOI through his interpreter.

A crucial aim of this visit is to foster unity and collaboration between our communities, laying the groundwork for future joint initiatives. One of my key objectives is to propose the organisation of joint meetings between Indian and Iranian priests on an international platform,’’ said Pouladi.

Iran’s Energy Crisis Hits ‘Dire’ Point as Industries Are Forced to Shut Down

By FarnazFassihi

Dec. 21, 2024

Government offices in Iran are closed or operating at reduced hours. Schools and colleges have moved to online only. Highways and shopping malls have descended into darkness, and industrial plants have been denied power, bringing manufacturing to a near halt.

Although Iran has one of the biggest supplies of natural gas and crude oil in the world, it is in a full-blown energy crisis that can be attributed to years of sanctions, mismanagement, aging infrastructure, wasteful consumption — and targeted attacks by Israel.

“We are facing very dire imbalances in gas, electricity, energy, water, money and environment,” said President Masoud Pezeshkian in a live televised address to the nation this month. “All of them are at a level that could turn into a crisis.”

While Iran has been struggling with issues with its infrastructure for years, the president warned that the problem had reached a critical point.

For most of last week, the country was virtually shut down to save energy. As ordinary Iranians fumed and industrial leaders warned that the accompanying losses amounted to tens of billions of dollars, Mr. Pezeshkian could offer no solution other than to say he was sorry.

“We must apologize to the people that we are in a situation where they have to bear the brunt,” Mr. Pezeshkian said. “God willing, next year we will try for this not to happen.”

Officials have said the deficit in the amount of gas the country needs to function amounts to about 350 million cubic meters a day, and as temperatures have plunged and demand has spiked, officials have had to resort to extreme measures to ration gas.

Road accident in remote part of western Iran leaves 9 dead, 14 injured

An intercity bus plunged into a ravine in western Iran on Saturday after the driver lost control of the speeding vehicle, killing nine passengers, state media reported.

A state TV report said six of the nine victims were killed immediately at the site of the accident in the Pa-alam area on the road linking the towns of Andimeshk and Pol-e-Dokhtar. Three more died in nearby hospitals and another 14 passengers were injured.

The official IRNA news agency said the passengers were soldiers who were travelling from the south to the west of the country. The bus was carrying 27 people.

Iran has one of the world’s worst traffic safety records with some 17,000 deaths annually. The grave toll is blamed on widespread disregard for traffic laws, unsafe vehicles and inadequate emergency services in its vast rural areas.

France’s Most Powerful Nuclear Reactor Finally Comes On Stream

December 21, 2024

The Flamanville 3 European Pressurized Reactor in Normandy started providing electricity to French homes on Saturday

Launch is welcome news for the heavily indebted state-owned energy company EDF after multiple problems extended construction to 17 years

PARIS: France on Saturday connected its most powerful nuclear power reactor to the national electricity grid in what leaders hailed as a landmark moment despite years of delays, budget overruns and technical setbacks.

The Flamanville 3 European Pressurized Reactor in Normandy started providing electricity to French homes at 11:48 a.m. (1048 GMT) Saturday, the EDF power company’s CEO Luc Remont said in a statement.

“Great moment for the country,” President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement on social network LinkedIn, calling it “one of the world’s most powerful nuclear reactors.”

“Re-industrializing to produce low-carbon energy is French-style ecology,” he added. “It strengthens our competitiveness and protects the climate.”

The French-developed European Pressurised Reactor project, launched in 1992, was designed to relaunch nuclear power in Europe after the 1986 Chernobyl catastrophe in Soviet Ukraine, and is touted as offering more efficient power output and better safety.

PTI, rights watchdog take exception to military justice

Ikram Junaidi

December 22, 2024

ISLAMABAD: The PTI has decided to challenge the military court convictions of its supporters at every available forum, as its leadership termed the trials of the May 9 suspects in military courts a blatant violation of fundamental human rights and principles of justice.

The government, on the other hand, labelled the convictions as “justice being served” with the information minister, saying that no one involved in the May 9 riots, prompted by the arrest of PTI leader Imran Khan, would be spared.

In a statement posted on PTI founder Imran Khan’s account of ‘X’, the former prime minister urged the international bodies to take notice of the “miscarriage of justice committed in the name of military trials”.

“Punishing innocent citizens by acting as judge, jury, and executioner through a military trial, after staging May 9 false flag operation themselves, is a blatant violation of human rights,” Dawn.com reported the PTI founder as saying. It may be noted the incarcerated ex-premier does not personally have access to his account.

Former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser, in a statement, highlighted that the trials conducted by military courts failed to meet the requirements of natural justice. “The decisions of military courts are a clear breach of fundamental human rights,” he said. “Justice has not been served in these trials, and we will challenge these decisions on every forum available,” he vowed.

“The Supreme Court’s decision has deeply disheartened us. It is unfortunate to see citizens being stripped of their basic constitutional rights,” he said in reference to a recent decision of the constitutional bench that led to the pronouncement of these convictions. The PTI leader warned that such actions would only deepen the sense of despair and disenfranchisement among people. “When judicial institutions are compromised, public confidence erodes, and a wave of hopelessness spreads across the country,” he stated.

Criticising the state of the judicial system, Asad Qaiser lamented, “At this moment, our judicial system stands paralysed, which is a tragedy for the country.”

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan has rejected the decision of military courts to pass sentences on civilians, particularly the PTI officials and workers in custody of the military.

Four terrorists killed in Khyber infiltration attempt: ISPR

Ibrahim Shinwari

December 22, 2024

KHYBER: Security forces killed four terrorists while foiling an infiltration attempt by a group of terrorists trying to cross the Pak-Afghan border into Khyber district, the military said on Saturday.

In a statement, the ISPR said that on the night between Dec 19 and 20, movement of a group of terrorists, trying to infiltrate through Pakistan-Afghanistan border, was picked up by security forces in the Rajgal area of Khyber. It said troops effectively engaged and thwarted their attempt to infiltrate. Resultantly, four militants were killed.

“During the intense fire exchange, one brave son of soil, Sepoy Amir Sohail Afridi, 22, resident of Khyber, having fought gallantly, embraced Shahadat,” the statement added.

The ISPR said Pakistan had consistently been asking the interim Afghan government to ensure effective border management on their side of the border. It said the interim Afghan government is expected to fulfil its obligations and deny the use of Afghan soil by khawarij for perpetuating acts of terrorism against Pakistan.

Meanwhile, local tribal elders expressed strong opposition to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Apex Committee’s decision regarding the evacuation of Tirah Valley for action against ‘miscreants’, saying they would not submit to such a decision under any circumstances.

North America

The City With One Of America's Lowest Costs Of Living Is A Midwest Mecca Of Art, Shopping, And Dining

By Nate Gesar

Dec. 21, 2024

You may be surprised to know that one of the most slept-on cities in the U.S. is a quiet Midwest oasis in western Ohio. Dayton, a city of roughly 135,000 people, is slowly gathering recognition for its chill downtown dotted with cool galleries, hip cafes, and interesting shops. And along with its relaxed and bohemian vibe, Dayton is also consistently ranked as one of the spots with the lowest costs of living in the U.S., coming in sixth place in a 2024 Realtor.com list of the most affordable cities. Consider it a serious sleeper candidate for budget-friendly vacations and ideal places to live.

Topping Realtor.com's list of the cities with the lowest cost of living is the border city of McAllen, a bustling southern foodie destination in Texas. Following in second place is Wichita, Kansas, an underrated gem that is home to Joyland, one of America's creepiest abandoned amusement parks. And though it's a little lower on the list, Dayton is worth a visit for its abundance of art, shopping, and dining options.

Dayton is most famously known as the birthplace of aviation for being the hometown of Orville and Wilbur Wright and the site of much of their early aviation experimentation. Flight enthusiasts need to visit the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, where you can see the Wright brothers' bicycle shop, one of their early airplanes, and a flying field.

After, spend some time walking around central Dayton. A great place to start is the Land of Funk murals on Stone Street (also known as Land of Funk Way) just outside of downtown. The site is filled with over 20 colorful murals of music icons from the region, like The Ohio Players and Heatwave. From there, head toward the gorgeous glass-domed Arcade, an innovation center filled with food options and galleries in an early-20th-century structure that is a true architectural beauty. Then, shop till you drop at 2nd Street Market, an epic flea market where local vendors sell everything from jams and jelly to unique clothes inside a beautiful old freight house.

After Luigi Mangione spectacle, Eric Adams' rival says he'd ban perp walk

Dec 22, 2024

As New York mayor Eric Adams faces flak for "orchestrating" the pero walk of Luigi Mangione, his rival Jim Walden said if he's elected he would ban the practise in NYC as it serves no purpose. The mayor's office shut down the criticism and said people can tweet whatever they want but the mayor was present there showing support to the law enforcement.

New York Democrat Ritchie Torres said the criminal justice system is not treating Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, like other assassins. Case in point: the perp walk of Mangione after he reached New York. "The dramatic perp walk of Luigi Mangione, accompanied by a heavily armed police presence, strikes me as law enforcement theater. Why the need for so much spectacle at so much taxpayer expense?" the Democratic leader said.

"The criminal justice system should treat Luigi Mangione as it would any assassin. Elevating Mangione to a mythical status only serves to deepen his delusions of grandeur," he added.

Torres said what many social media users spoke about with shock as a huge number of police personnel were deployed when New York City received Luigi Mangione from Pennsylvania. Mayor Eric Adams was also present. Perp walk is to make an example out of a person who is led to the police station or a courthouse in full public display.

But Luigi Mangione's perp walk drew shock as social media users questioned the need for it. Some observers pointed out that it was absolutely counter-productive as instead of making an example out of Luigi Mangione, they made him a hero as they paraded Luigi Mangione who was seen in a new shaven look.

US judge rules Israel's NSO Group liable for hacking WhatsApp using Pegasus spyware

Dec 22, 2024

A US judge ruled against Israel's NSO Group on Friday, holding it responsible for hacking WhatsApp and breaching its contract. The lawsuit accused NSO of exploiting a flaw in WhatsApp to install spyware called Pegasus. The case will now proceed to trial to determine the damages NSO must pay.

WhatsApp filed the lawsuit in 2019, claiming the company accessed its servers without permission to install Pegasus on approximately 1,400 devices. These devices belonged to journalists, human rights activists, and others.

In a summary judgment, US district judge Phyllis Hamilton in Oakland, California, held Israeli surveillance company NSO Group Technologies, also known as Q Cyber Technologies, responsible for hacking Meta's WhatsApp using its advanced military-grade spyware, Pegasus.

The court found that NSO violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and the Comprehensive Computer Data Access and Fraud Act by sending malicious messages through WhatsApp servers to compromise user devices. Additionally, it ruled that NSO breached its contract by violating WhatsApp's Terms of Service.

'They found us': Coast guard crew in New Jersey reports mysterious drones, alleges White House cover up

Dec 22, 2024

Coast guardsmen from Barnegat Light, New Jersey, are voicing frustration after federal officials dismissed their accounts of being followed by a fleet of drones while patrolling the Atlantic Ocean earlier this month.

The sailor’s comments came shortly after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed temporary flight restrictions over parts of New Jersey and New York. He was among 12 crew members aboard the 47-foot rescue vessel that encountered the drones on the evening of the sighting.

“We were actually out there to see if we could spot any drones, because of all these sightings,” the sailor explained. “Well, we found some drones. Or more accurately, they found us.”

According to the sailor, the drones appeared suddenly around 9 pm and followed the vessel for about 15 minutes. The drone swarm mirrored the boat’s movements, shifting direction as the boat did. “They had four propellers, about seven feet across, with festive red, green, and white flashing lights,” he said. The drones flew at an estimated 80 to 100 feet above the vessel.

US President-elect Donald Trump warned on Saturday that the US will demand to regain control of the Panama Canal, alleging unfair fees for US ships and hinting at concerns over Chinese influence.Trump, posting on Truth Social, said, "Our Navy and Commerce have been treated in a very unfair and injudicious way. The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the US." "This complete 'rip-off' of our Country will immediately stop," he asserted.

Trump also expressed concerns about China's increasing presence near the canal. He said, "It was solely for Panama to manage, not China, or anyone else. It was likewise not given for Panama to charge the United States, its Navy, and corporations, doing business within our Country, exorbitant prices and rates of passage."

"We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands! It was not given for the benefit of others, but merely as a token of cooperation with us and Panama." Trump added.

The Northeast Unity Forum (NEUF)’s National Executive Council, has urged President Bola Tinubu to direct the immediate release of the Miyetti Allah’s National President, Bello Bodejo.

A statement on Saturday issued by Comrade Yusuf Bello Umar National Coordinator, NEUF, described the arrest and detention of Bodejo, as “illegal and unlawful.”

Umar chided President Bola Tinubu’s administration for lacking focus in addressing the plethora of challenges confronting the country but rather channelling its efforts in arresting those who have dissenting voices.

Umar said: “It’s unfortunate that the government has lacked focus and vision in discharging its basic responsibilities but chose to deviate to arresting individuals who expressed their dissatisfaction over the manner in which things are going on or decided to use some voluntary approaches in tackling the failures of the government.

“It can be recalled that Bello Bodejo is among the minority of the minority of the ethnic leaders in this country that supported the fight against banditry by legally recruiting, training and posting of Fulanis to combat the menace of the bandits in Northern Nigeria, particularly in Northcentral State of Nasarawa.

13 dead, including children, in stampedes at Nigeria Christmas charity events

By DYEPKAZAH SHIBAYAN

December 21, 2024

ABUJA, Nigeria -- At least 13 people, including four children, were killed in two separate stampedes in Nigeria as large crowds gathered to collect food and clothing items distributed at annual Christmas events, the police said Saturday.

The two accidents came days after another such stampede in Africa’s most populous country, amid a growing trend by local organizations, churches and individuals to organize charity events ahead of Christmas, as the country struggles with the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation.

Ten people were killed in the first stampede in the early hours at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, an upmarket part of the capital, Abuja, police spokesman Josephine Adeh said in a statement, adding that more than 1,000 people have been evacuated from the church.

There was a crowd surge at one of the church gates, as dozens tried to enter the premises at around 4 a.m., hours before the gift items were to be shared, witnesses said, pointing out that some had been waiting since the previous night.

“The way they were rushing to enter, some people were falling and some of them were old,” LovethInyang, a witness. Inyang said he managed to rescue one baby as his mother struggled in the surge.

For Healthy Competition, NNPCL Drops Petrol Price To N899/Litre For Marketers

by Leadership News

22-12-2024

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reduced its ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol, from N1,020 to N899 per litre.

The decision, coming days after the Dangote Refinery reduced its price to N899, was confirmed by the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) in a statement released on Saturday.

The statement signed by the association’s National Public Relations Officer, Dr Joseph Obele, and quoting a document released by NNPCL’s Commercial Department indicated a reduction based on the regional pricing scheme.

The price indicated that marketers would buy the product at N899 per litre, matching the price offered by the Dangote Refinery a few days ago.

The statement read, “The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has taken a significant step in response to the competitive impact of deregulation in the downstream sector.

“The price reduction by NNPCL is seen as a response to the competitive impact of deregulation, which has led to increased competition in the downstream sector,” it stated.

Obele noted that the price reduction by the national oil firm is seen as a response to the competitive impact of deregulation, which has led to increased competition in the downstream sector.

He also expressed optimism that PMS prices will drop further before the end of January 2025, given the global decline in crude oil prices and the naira’s recent gain against the dollar.

Winter solstice's first rays of sun align with ancient Luxor temple

22-12-2024

The winter solstice is a special day at the Ancient Egyptian temple complex at Luxor on the Nile River.

On the northern hemisphere’s shortest day of the year, the first rays of sunlight in the early morning align perfectly with the main axis of the city’s Temple of Amun-Re.

As the sun bathes the temple, it enters the Holy of Holies which houses a statue of Amun, the god of air and fertility.

"The sun's rays fall directly over the Holy of Holies in the Karnak Temples, a unique and historic event that confirms the greatness of Egypt and the Egyptians for thousands of years," says Luxor’s deputy governor, Hesham Abu Zeid.

The astronomical phenomena coincides with the beginning of the germination season in Ancient Egypt, when farms begin to work the fields.
