FIFA World Cup: Kerala Muslim Body Jamat Ul Khatib
Committee Calls Worshipping Footballers 'Un-Islamic'
As per the Muslim body,
worshipping football stars is against Islam, and it urged fans not to wave
flags of Portugal, which had colonized many nations
-----
by Snehadri Sarkar
Nov 26, 2022
A Muslim body on Friday came out against
football-crazy fans in Kerala, who have installed massive cut-outs of star
footballers in support of the teams taking part in the ongoing 2022 FIFA World
Cup in Qatar.
As per the organization, worshipping football players
is against Islam, and it advised fans not to wave flags of Portugal, which
earlier colonized many nations.
Nasar Faizy Koodathayi, the general secretary of the
Samastha Kerala Jam-Iyyathil Khatib Committee that delivers sermons across
Kerala mosques, instructed its members to talk the "faithful" out of
their frenzy for football and encourage them not to spend a lot just in the
name of the sport.
Koodathayi clarified that he wasn't against football,
but it is not suitable for Indians to honor and wave flags of other countries.
"The game should be seen in a sportsman's spirit.
Football is becoming a fever people are getting addicted to. This is not
good," he added.
"Instead of loving our nation, some are engaged
in worshipping football stars. There is a limit to worshipping people when it
comes to Islam. Also, people are waving Portugal flags... A country which
colonized many countries," Koodathayi said further.
Reacting to Koodathayi's remarks, Indian Union Muslim
League (IUML) leader MK Muneer and Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty
stated watching football and becoming fans of footballers were part of an
individual's personal freedom. Sivankutty added no one has the right to
infringe upon one's freedom.
Meanwhile, in multiple incidents, the Kerala Police
registered cases against football fans in the state for pelting stones at cops,
unruly behavior, and causing chaos on the streets since the Qatar World Cup
started.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup got officially underway on
Sunday (November 20) in Qatar at the Al Bayt Stadium near Doha. The opening
match saw Ecuador beat the hosts Qatar 2-0 as Enner Valencia was on target
twice.

‘Islam Is Strong Enough To Withstand Cinematic Work
Portraying Fictional Account’: Sindh High Court
Photo: Khoosat

-----
SAMAA WEB DESK
27-11-2022
The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Saturday noted that it
does not fall to the court to morally police the public by making a
determination of what should or should not be viewed and to take on the
function of itself devising and imposing a restriction as it dismissed a petition
seeking a ban on the queer-themed movie Joyland.
In a detailed written verdict spanning five pages
authored by Sindh High Court (SHC) Chief Justice Ahmed Ali Shaikh and Yousuf
Ali Sayeed, said that the petition had argued that the Saim Sadiq directorial would
encourage immoral activities and is against Article 277 of Constitution.
However, the court observed that the petitioner made
no attempt to show how the screening of the film would violate any law, instead
limited their argument to the extent that the film’s theme and storyline and
contended it would violated Article 227 of the Constitution.
“All existing laws shall be adapted to the injunctions
of Islam”, and that no such law shall be enforced which is contrary to the
Qur’an and the Sunnah.
The court noted that its function was not to make a
moral judgment to restrict the freedom of speech and expression of a filmmaker,
as safeguarded under Article 19 of the Constitution which ensures that every
citizen shall have the right to freedom of speech and expression.
The court noted that in the event of a restriction
being imposed by the censor board or any other authority that may be competent,
testing the reasonableness of that restriction stringently, so as to ensure
that the same is “reasonable” in the strictest conceivable sense.
In the absence of any restriction imposed by the
concerned quarter, whether that be the board or provincial government, it does
not fall to the court to morally police the public by making a determination of
what should or should not be viewed and to take on the function of itself
devising and imposing a restriction.
“It is not the job of the court to make moral
judgments and stop the filmmaker’s freedom of speech and expression,” the
verdict stated.
The court said that in the matter at hand, they were
confident that “Islam, being the great global religion that it is, is strong
enough to withstand a cinematic work portraying a purely fictional account of a
relationship humanizing a transgender character, and are equally sanguine that
our society is not so weak as to crumble as a consequence.”
The court noted that people who are transgender are
equal citizens of Pakistan in all respects and the stories of their life, their
struggles, and their human relationships deserve equal space and recognition.

US Men’s Soccer Team Displays Iranian Flag, Minus Islamic
Republic Emblem
U.S. men’s soccer team has
begun displaying Iran’s national flag on social media without the emblem of the
Islamic Republic
-----
By JON GAMBRELL
27-11-2022
DOHA, Qatar (AP) — The US men’s soccer team has begun
displaying Iran’s national flag on social media without the emblem of the
Islamic Republic as nationwide protests challenging Tehran’s theocratic
government continue.
The Twitter account of the US men’s team on Sunday
displayed a banner with the squad’s matches in the group stage, with the
Iranian flag only bearing its green, white and red colors. The same could be
seen in a post on its Facebook and Instagram accounts laying out the point
totals so far in its group.
The US men’s team did not immediately respond to a
request for comment. However, the absence of the emblem comes as monthslong
demonstrations have challenged Iran’s government since the Sept. 16 death of
22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who had been detained by the country’s morality
police.
The protests have seen at least 450 people killed
since they started, as well as over 18,000 arrested, according to Human Rights
Activists in Iran, an advocacy group following the demonstrations.
Iran has not released casualty or arrest figures for
months and alleges without providing evidence that the protests have been
fomented by its enemies abroad, including the US.
Tehran also restricts press access and has detained
over 63 reporters and photographers since the demonstrations began, according
to the Committee to Protect Journalists, making covering the unrest that much
more difficult.
Iran’s mission to the United Nations and its soccer
federation did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Iranian state
media had yet to acknowledge the emblem’s absence on the US men’s team
accounts, though comments raged online.
The Islamic Republic emblem, designed in 1980, is four
curves with a sword between them. It represents the Islamic saying: “There is
no god but God.” It also resembles a tulip or lotus.
At the top and the bottom of the flag, there are 22
inscriptions of “God is Great” as well, which honors the date on the Persian
calendar when the Islamic Revolution took hold.
The flag has become a point of contention at the World
Cup. Apparent pro-government supporters have waved it, shouting at those
demonstrating over Amini’s death. Others at matches have waved Iran’s lion and
sun flag, an emblem of its former ruler, the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
More security forces could be seen at Iran’s last
match against Wales. In the capital Tehran, anti-riot police — the same ones
cracking down on protests — waved the Iranian flag after the Wales win,
angering demonstrators.

Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Northern Christians Not
Marginalised – All Progressives Congress Chieftain
A photo combination of
former SGF Babachir Lawal and APC chieftain Ahmed Sajo.
------
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
November 26th, 2022
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation,
Babachir Lawal on Thursday condemned the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All
Progressives Congress (APC).
Lawal in a statement released claimed that aggrieved
Northern Christians in the party after much review have decided to support the
presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.
The statement released by Lawal was, however, countered
by former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and some
others who claimed that Lawal was speaking for himself.
A chieftain of the APC, Ahmed Sajo while reacting to
Lawal’s stand in an interview on Channels TV described the former SGF as being
emotional.
Sajo while speaking about the possibility of anger
among northern Christians over the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the APC said he does
not think they are angry.
The former Commissioner for Information in Adamawa
State while speaking during the interview said, “I don’t think so. There are
people who are emotional like Babachir and co. You cannot excuse them; you
cannot say, ‘You cannot exist within our region.’ But they are there. But that
does not mean that, politically, we have marginalised our brothers.
“My local government is 90 per cent Muslim and our
candidate for House of Assembly is a Christian. We don’t see him as a
Christian; we see him as a brother, a capable person, and somebody that can
deliver.”
Sajo when asked if the ruling party, APC recognises
Christians as a force in the North, he said, “Absolutely! Is it not in my party
that Babachir was made SGF and Boss Mustapha is now SGF? Are they not northern
Christians? Is it not in my party that (Yakubu) Dogara was the speaker of the
House of Representatives?
“You think that if they were marginalised, they would
have arrived at that level? Remember, David Mark was Senate President for how
long? Is he not a northern Christian? If they were marginalised, would he have
been the Senate President?

Mosque Like Domes Vanish Overnight From Karnataka Bus
Stand Amidst BJP MP’s Threats Of Demolition
Outlook Web Desk
27 NOV 2022
Two domes certainly got vanished in the middle of the
night from the top of a bus stop at Mysuru, Karnataka after BJP MP Pratap Simha
threatened to demolish it as it was allegedly looking like a mosque.
Simha earlier said that two domes that used to flank
the main dome in the bus stand visually represented a mosque and set a deadline
to remove it.
On his objection, the National Highway Authority of
India (NHAI) on November 15 issued a notice to the Mysore city corporation for
the removal of a “structure constructed to achieve controversial kind of
issues”. It had also given one week time to the city authority to demolish the
structure.

Funds Coming From Public Exchequer, File Details Of
Imams’ Salaries: Central Information Commission To Delhi Govt
Nov 27, 2022
NEW DELHI: The Central Information Commission has
turned the heat on the AAP government over its failure to reveal how much
salaries are being paid to imams of mosques in the city.
Information commissioner Uday Mahurkar on Friday
directed the state government to furnish details to an RTI applicant regarding
the money being paid as salaries to imams, pointing out that funds are going
from the public exchequer.
Mahurkar said even Delhi Waqf Board initially denied
salaries were paid to imams but later claimed it is only an honorarium not a
salary. “The commission observes that there was a clear attempt to hide the
information in the initial period by a play of words which showed complete lack
of transparency on the part of the respondent authorities in a case which in
turn affects the provisions of the Constitution, and also social harmony and
uniform applicability of laws for all religions in keeping with the constitutional
direction that citizens of all religions be treated equally,” he stated.

municipal elections since the Union government reunified its three municipal
bodies – East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), North Delhi Municipal
Corporation (NDMC), and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) – into the

Of the 250 wards up for grabs, Chandni Mahal in

The seat, currently held by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP),

November 27, 2022
MANSEHRA: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) emir
Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Saturday declared that their jihad against Imran Khan
would continue so that the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman did not come
to power again.
“We have been waging jihad against Fitna (Imran) Khan
for the last fifteen years and I warn you that if he regained power his
government would shatter the country’s economy and weaken our defence forces in
the same way as it did when he became prime minister through stolen mandate,”
said the JUI-F chief while speaking at a rally.
Maulana Fazl, who also heads the ruling Pakistan
Democratic Movement, said the PDM government was the saviour of the country.
“Pakistan was on the verge of bankruptcy during this Zionist agent’s four-year
tenure in office but we expelled him out of power and pulled the country out of
the political and economic crisis,” he recalled.

Record number of Muslims elected in US midterms: ‘We
should lean into who we are’
Yusra Farzan
26 Nov 2022
As a woman, a millennial, a progressive – and a Muslim
– Nabilah Islam faced long odds in her bid for elected office in Georgia. Two
years ago, she ran for Congress but lost in the Democratic primary, despite a
high-profile endorsement from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This year, she ran for
state senate to represent parts of the Atlanta metro region and won.
“People thought it was unthinkable that in the south,
someone would vote for a woman with the last name Islam,” she said. “I’m like:
they did. Fifty-three per cent of this district did.”
Islam, 32, is among a record number of Muslims elected
to local, state and national office in November. A new analysis by the Council
on American-Islamic Relations (Cair), a civil rights and advocacy group, and
Jetpac, a non-profit focused on increasing Muslim political representation in
the US, found that Muslims won at least 83 seats nationwide, up from an
estimated 71 in 2020.

Reporter’s Diary: A Night Sneak Into ‘Boko Haram
Terrorists’ Den
By Hamisu Kabir Matazu
27 Nov 2022
It all started with a story I pitched to unravel the
truth about the people said to have been killed and the condition of those
injured by a military airstrike in Buhari village, Yunusari LGA of Yobe State.
My instinct convinced me to embark on the journey
despite warnings from government officials and people in Damaturu and Geidam
motor parks that the town was under Boko Haram control.
A mechanic, who usually goes to repair their cars and
generators, said he has had no encounter with them whenever he was taken there

Diphtheria cases rising after disease linked to
migrant’s death at Manston
By Sam Blewett
27-11-2022
Diphtheria cases among asylum seekers in the UK have
risen, as the Home Office said the death of a man held at the Manston
processing centre may have been from an infection of the bacteria.
Officials are expected to confirm on Monday that the
number of infections has risen to about 50, amid concerns about the spread of
the disease as migrants were moved from the Kent facility to hotels around the
country.
The Government said on Saturday that a PCR test on the
man who died after being held, possibly unlawfully, at the centre for a week
indicates that “diphtheria may be the cause of the illness”.

Russia Is Taking The Nuclear Out Of Nuclear Missiles
To Fight Ukraine
By Jack Buckby

British Intelligence Says Russia Is Using Hollowed-Out
Nuclear Missiles In Ukraine: An intelligence update from the British Ministry
of Defence revealed on Saturday how Russian forces appear to be using
hollowed-out nuclear missiles in Ukraine. The update describes how Russia is
“likely removing the nuclear warheads from ageing nuclear cruise missiles and
firing the unarmed munitions at Ukraine.”
British intelligence officials obtained the
information by analyzing open-source imagery, which reportedly shows a
“shot-down AS-15 KENT air launched cruise missile” that was designed in the
1980s specifically to be used as a nuclear delivery system.
According to the update, Russian forces likely
substituted the warhead for ballast, a heavy material designed to maintain the
stability of the rocket.

Iran’s crackdown on nationwide protests over the past two months.
The Human Rights Council will appoint an independent

the government’s actions "unacceptable" and
"disproportionate" in his opening address.
Volker noted that at least 300 people have died, and
more than 14,000 have been arrested, since the protests started in
mid-September. Some estimates put the number as high as 350 dead and over
