Teaneck Democrat Municipal Committee says HAF, VHPA, and SEWA International are “domestic branches” of “foreign hate groups”

WASHINGTON: A Democratic Party unit in a New Jersey town has passed a resolution calling out the US-based Hindutva outfits as “domestic branches” of “foreign hate groups”.

The resolution named several right-wing Hindu groups — such as the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (VHPA), SEWA International, Infinity Foundation and Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation — among the outfits that practise Hindu supremacism in the United States.

Passed by the Teaneck Democratic Municipal Committee (TDMC) this week, the resolution urged US senators and congressmen from New Jersey, and Governor Phil Murphy, to ask the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to “step up” research on these “foreign hate groups that enjoy “tax-exempt status” in the United States.

“Hindu nationalist organisations have infiltrated all levels of politics and were highly effective in blocking US House Resolution 417 which was a congressional attempt to warn against the Hindu nationalist movement,” TDMC said.

House Resolution 417 — brought in 2013 in the US Congress — sought to continue denying a US visa to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which was sponsored by both Republican and Democratic lawmakers. The resolution also called on India to protect the rights and freedoms of religious minorities and asked the US government to include the matter as part of the bilateral strategic dialogue.

The TDMC resolution noted that “most local American elected officials remain unaware and unprepared to deal with the Hindu extremists”.

The resolution claimed that US-based right-wing Hindu groups had “direct and indirect ties to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the right-wing Hindu nationalist paramilitary organisation in India whose ideology are part of Nazism and European fascism.”

The resolution urged New Jersey Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker and Congressman Josh Gottheimer to “revise the Visa Waiver Programme Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015 to address foreign violent extremists with speaking engagements in the US”.

In 2005, Modi, then the chief minister of Gujarat, applied for a US visa but his request was turned down because of his failure to halt the 2002 riots that killed about 2,000 Muslims and destroyed livelihoods and homes in the Indian state. In 2016, the Obama administration used waiver facilities to restore his visa.

The TDMC resolution noted that “extremists who routinely spew venomous hate towards minorities [in India] are invited to speak at large events and temples in the United States”.

The resolution pointed out that Sambit Patra, a “controversial” spokesperson of India’s ruling Hindu supremacist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), “served as Grand Marshall” at a parade held in Edison and Woodbridge towns on Aug 14 to mark the 75th anniversary of India’s freedom.

“A bulldozer, which has been weaponised against minorities” in India, was part of the New Jersey parade with “giant pictures” of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as ‘Daddy Bulldozer’.

The resolution also pointed out that Hindu extremists sent “one million emails, death threats and rape threats to US academic scholars, like Rutgers [University] professor Audrey Truschke, and their families when 50 universities supported [a] conference titled ‘Dismantling Hindutva’ [in 2021]”.

The resolution said US lawmakers must help pass US House Resolution 1196 that urges the US Department of State to designate India as a Country of Particular Concern, as recommended by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom.

“Americans need to understand that the RSS’s roots stem from the same place as Italian fascism and German Nazism,” TDMC member Daniel Rosenblum, who voted for the resolution, told Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), which was among the first to report the passing of the resolution.

Margot Fisher, another TDMC member, said: “People are confusing the teachings of Gandhi with Hindu nationalism and they are not the same.”

In recent weeks, several human rights organisations — such as Black Lives Matter, American Muslims for Democracy, and Hindus for Human Rights — led a campaign to raise awareness among elected officials in New Jersey about the dangers of Islamophobic Hindu supremacism.

Inter-Religion Bonhomie: Kept In Gurudwara For 75 Yrs, A Manuscript Of Quran Handed Over To Mosque

In an exceptional case of inter-religion bonhomie, members of a Gurudwara committee of Buttaran village and other residents on Thursday handed over a manuscript of the Quran, which had been in their safe custody since Partition, to the caretakers of a mosque.

Elderly people in the village said three Muslim families used to live in the vicinity of the one-room Gurudwara before Partition. Since they were to migrate to Pakistan, they handed over the holy book to the then custodian of the Gurudwara to ensure its safety. Since then, the Gurudwara had been maintaining it, keeping it wrapped in a cloth along with other holy scriptures and ensuring full respect to it.

When the mosque custodians came on Thursday, we requested them to read out its details as we cannot read Urdu. They told us that this handwritten copy had been readied in 1938. —Gurmel Singh, Granthi

About four years ago, when Gurmel Singh joined as the Granthi of the Gurudwara, he proposed to the villagers that the holy book should be safely handed over to the Muslim community. “We used to open it only when villagers or other visitors who knew about it requested us for its Darshan. Though someone in Lahore had penned it in pre-Independence times, it is still in a good condition. We initially thought that we could hand it over to some Gujjar families in the village but then someone suggested that the old Imam Nasir mosque in Jalandhar city was the most appropriate place where it could be kept,” said the Granthi.

He said, “I, along with Gurudwara committee members and some villagers, went to the Imam Nasir mosque and met Maulana Mohammad Adnan Jamai there. He told us to bring it to them, but then someone suggested that the Maulvi should be invited to the gurdwara to receive it. When the mosque custodians came yesterday, we requested them to read out its details as we cannot read Urdu. They told us that this handwritten copy had been readied in 1938. They happily took it with them.”

The Granthi said, “The occasion was special for me. It gives me such a huge sense of satisfaction that the Quran has reached where it ideally should have been. I am thankful to the Almighty for having chosen me for this holy cause.”

The gurdwara members also presented a siropa to the special guests. Among those present on the occasion were gurdwara president Kulvir Singh, former president Mohinder Singh, Maulana Shamshad and Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui.

Religious Diplomacy Key In Promoting ’Common Values,’ Says Muslim World League Chief

ARAB NEWS

September 17, 2022

RIYADH: The closing statement of the Kazakhstan Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, attended by more than 100 delegations of influential international religious leaders, has praised the contents of the historic Makkah Document.

The document was signed by senior muftis, scholars and thinkers of the Islamic world in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, home of the Grand Mosque, affirming its importance in promoting peace, dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect for the good of the world.

Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, secretary-general of the Muslim World League, had assigned Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Zayd, deputy secretary-general of MWL, to represent the league in the congress.

Al-Issa sent a recorded television speech in the opening session of the congress, at the invitation of the Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, along with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in the presence of the Pope and international religious leaders.

In his speech, Al-Issa addressed the importance of “common values,” stressing that religious diplomacy is an important and influential tool in the context of promoting these values, as seen at the conference, bearing common humanitarian goals.

He noted the importance of dialogue and civilized and cultural communication, stressing that being far from each other has generated anxiety and fear and created a gap that widens with time due to illusions and doubts. He added that errors in perceptions and judgments have resulted in dangerous negative effects throughout human history.

Al-Issa refuted the theses that hold religions responsible for some conflicts and wars, declaring that most of the conflicts and wars throughout human history were the result of ideas blamed on religions, but in reality they only expressed the thoughts of their owners, and never expressed true religion or any civilized culture.

Many Islamic leaders participating in the conference described, in the final statement, the praise of Makkah Document as a great recognition of the historical achievement of this document, which is a significant turning point in contemporary Islamic history, due to its religious and intellectual context that embraces all Islamic sects.

The Makkah Document was celebrated on a number of international platforms for its religious and cultural diversity. It was also adopted by Islamic countries at the meeting of foreign ministers in Niamey, Niger, and it has been adopted in the training of imams in many Islamic countries and countries that include Muslim communities. The sponsor of this document was King Salman, who sponsored its international conference held in Makkah in 2019, organized by the MWL, with the approval of about 1,200 muftis and scholars and more than 4,500 Islamic thinkers.

Indonesia Works To Weaken Radical Islam Through Education Realize "Unity In Diversity"

September 18, 2022

JAKARTA -- An inconspicuous yet important agenda for Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to educate moderate Muslims is getting underway as the world's most populous Muslim nation aims to get religious radicals under control and realize "unity in diversity."

The centrepiece of these efforts is the Indonesian International Islamic University, the newest national university in the country, which was established under a national strategic project led by Widodo, with the aim of providing the highest quality of Islamic education in the world.

IIIU's campus, located in the city of Depok, on the outskirts of Jakarta, is built on a tract of land measuring 142.5 hectares, 30% of which is occupied by buildings, with the rest covered in lush plant growth.

Although the university is Islamic by name, "we are open to [all] students. ... We respect diversity, without segregation by race or religion," IIIU Rector Komaruddin Hidayat said in a recent interview with Nikkei Asia.

The campus currently hosts four faculties: Islamic studies, social sciences, economics and business, and education. The plan is to add three more faculties in the future. It is currently a research-oriented institution offering only master's and doctoral programs but plans to add undergraduate programs.

The faculty of economics and business teaches general economics, rather than teaching Shariah economics based on Islamic law. Professors have been hired from the Middle East, Europe and the U.S., in addition to Indonesia, and all classes are conducted in English or Arabic.

IIIU, whose faculties have a common aim of producing moderate Muslims, also incorporates a broad range of research from Indonesia, the Middle East, Europe and the U.S. in its programs. To provide balanced views, it also offers classes on non-Islamic subjects.

While the university provides high-level education, it has so far not proved easy for students to complete their classes. In the first year of opening, 1,000 students applied but only about 100 enrolled, of whom 20 have already dropped out.

"The Middle East has played a central role in Islamic education up to now," Hidayat said. "With the opening of this university, we would like to make Indonesia an international hub" for Islamic education.

Indonesia has in the past experienced a series of tragedies resulting from terrorist acts by Islamic radicals. A 2002 terrorist attack in the island resort of Bali by operatives of Jemaah Islamiyah, a group based in Indonesia, killed more than 200 people. Domestic terrorist organizations, inspired by international terrorist organizations such as the Islamic State group and al-Qaida, have attacked government and other religious facilities. In 2017, a Catholic church and police station in Surabaya were attacked by Islamic State-affiliated suicide bombers, killing 13 people and leaving many wounded.

The Widodo administration is increasing crackdowns on Islamic radicals and at the same time working on programs to develop human resources.

"We'd like to introduce democracy, which has taken root in Indonesia, into education and spread moderate Islam, which excludes extremism," Hidayat said.

Its particular focus is on integration of Pancasila, or the five principles formulated by former Indonesian President Sukarno as a state philosophy, into IIIU's education. The Pancasila, the national credo, stipulates diversity in the country.

Efforts like Indonesia's to make Islam compatible with democracy are rarely found in the Islamic world, where many countries are regarded as being under authoritarian control by royal family members and religious leaders.

"Islam has essentially respected other religions and sought ways to coexist with them," said Hidayat, who specializes in comparative religious studies. "The religion is highly compatible with democracy, which respects minority positions."

Radical Islamist Group Armed With Pistols, Clubs, And Stones Attacks Shia Procession In Pakistan, 13 Injured

Shiite Muslims take part in a procession marking Chehlum in Peshawar, Pakistan

-----

SEPTEMBER 18, 2022

The Shia procession was going to Imambargah (congregation hall) in Sialkot, for the Chehlum of Imam Hussain when a group of people armed with pistols, clubs, and stones attacked the mourners.

Activists of a radical Islamist group attacked a Shia procession in Pakistan's Punjab province, leaving at least 13 people injured, police said on Sunday.

According to an FIR, the Shia procession was going to Imambargah (congregation hall) in Sialkot, about 130kms from Lahore, in connection with the Chehlum of Imam Hussain on Saturday when a group of people armed with pistols, clubs and stones attacked the mourners.

The Chehlum is a Shia religious observance that commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was martyred on the 10th day of the month of Muharram.

A senior police officer told PTI on Sunday that tensions had been simmering over the past few days in the area between the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and Shia activists over the route of the procession.

"The TLP local leaders wanted that the Shia procession should not pass in front of their mosque cum seminary. The local Shias were determined to go to Imambargah by the same route they take every year," the officer said on condition of anonymity.

"Police officers had held talks with both sects and apparently the TLP leaders agreed that they would not object to the procession route," the officer said.

However, a group of TLP activists came out of their seminary on the Alam Chowk of Shahabpura (Sialkot) and attacked the Shia mourners.

"Thirteen people, all of them belonging to the Shia community suffered injuries. The condition of a couple of them is stated to be critical as they had head injuries," the officer said.

Sialkot Police chief Faisal Kamran said the police force reached the spot after learning about the incident. However, the attackers managed to flee.

"Police force has been deployed in the area to control law and order. Besides police teams have been constituted for the arrest of the suspects," he said.

Video clips, shared on social media, showed a good number of people holding clubs and weapons opening fire and attacking the Shia procession participants.

Islamic State claims first attacks inside Benin

September 17, 2022

Through its weekly Al-Naba newsletter earlier this week, the Islamic State officially claimed its first two operations inside Benin. The attacks now join the chorus of strikes committed inside the littoral West African country by its main regional competitor, al Qaeda’s Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM).

On Thursday, the Islamic State retroactively took credit for two assaults inside Benin’s northern Alibori Department, which borders both Burkina Faso and Niger. In its first claim, the Islamic State said its men were responsible for an ambush on Beninese troops near the town of Alfa Kawoura on July 1, reportedly killing four soldiers. This incident does not seem to correlate to any known reported attack.

However, in its second claim, it stated its men carried out the July 2 attack in Benin’s northern Parc W that killed two Beninese soldiers. The jihadist group also released a graphic photo showing the two killed troops. For both assaults, the Islamic State said its Sahel Province, which is more colloquially known as the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), were responsible.

First mosque opens in Troy, but legal battle with city continues

Jennifer Chambers

18-09-2022

Members of a mosque and Troy's elected officials are meeting Saturday afternoon for a ribbon cutting at the Adam Community Center, but a federal lawsuit between the parties remains unsettled after a four-year legal battle.

Amy Doukoure, staff attorney for CAIR-MI, said on Saturday, lawsuits by her organization and the Justice Department remain open and the two sides continue to disagree over monetary damages.

"We were able to get a certificate of occupancy," Doukoure said. "They can use it as is as a place of worship and banquet hall. There are bigger plans in the future to create a more comprehensive community center."

U.P.’S Lone Muslim Minister, Danish Azad Ansari, Says Survey Will Connect Madrasas With Government Schemes

The Hindu Bureau

SEPTEMBER 18, 2022

The lone Muslim face in the Uttar Pradesh Government and Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Danish Azad Ansari, on Saturday alleged that Opposition parties in the State were indulging in false propaganda on the ongoing survey of madrasas in the State, and the focus of the survey is to connect madrasas with government welfare schemes.

“No madrasa will be closed or bulldozers used on madrasas. In the survey, there is no talk of bulldozers or closing down madrasas. These propagandas are orchestrated by the opposition as the Muslim community is drawn towards the BJP government,” Mr. Ansari said, speaking to media persons in Barabanki.

“After the survey, we will connect the madrasas with government schemes like ‘ Nai Roshni, Nai Udaan’ of the Minority Welfare Department, and we want students to get exposure to modern and technical education along with religious education,” he said. He further alleged that Opposition parties in the State had used the Muslim community as a vote bank in the past and now, as the community was progressing, “these groups are not likening it”.

One-year prison sentence, SR3,000 fine for violators of Saudi flag law

GHADI JOUDAH

September 17, 2022

RIYADH: As the 92nd Saudi National Day approaches, the Ministry of Commerce has clarified the regulations regarding the use of the Kingdom’s flag.

The ministry has warned that those found guilty of “showing disrespect” to the national flag in public will be jailed for one year and/or receive a fine of up to SR3,000 (just under $800).

The ministry confirmed that it is prohibited for “individuals and commercial establishments” to use the Kingdom’s flag — a white sword on a green background and white Arabic writing which translates as “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah” — or the state emblem — two swords and a palm tree — or pictures of leaders and officials and their names in commercial dealings, including “publications, goods and products, media bulletins, special gifts and others.”

Sky’s the limit as private pilot courses take off in Saudi Arabia

GEORGE CHARLES DARLEY

September 17, 2022

RIYADH: The phrase “private aviation” conjures up images of billionaires in Lear jets hopping between Monte Carlo and the Bahamas — but entry into this world is surprisingly affordable and accessible, particularly in Saudi Arabia.

The proliferation of private aviation academies in the Kingdom has opened the way for ordinary men and women to obtain a private pilot license (PPL) in a matter of a few months — allowing you to fly for sport and recreation with a couple of passengers, but not for commercial gain.

Capt. Abubakar Mohamed, the chief ground instructor at Rabigh Wings Aviation Academy located just north of Jeddah, explained the procedure.

Johor will play a decisive role in deciding who wins GE15, says PKR’s Rafizi

By Ben Tan

18 Sep 2022

JOHOR BARU, Sept 18 — Johor will be the state that determines whether Pakatan Harapan (PH), Barisan Nasional (BN) or Perikatan Nasional (PN) clinches the 15th general election (GE15), said PKR’s Rafizi Ramli.

“In Malaysia, the state with the most parliamentary constituencies is Sarawak with 31 seats. Johor comes second with 26 seats, followed by Sabah with 25 seats.

“For any political party, be it PKR, Umno, BN, Bersatu (Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia) or PN, no coalition in this country can form a government if it does not win Johor’s parliamentary seats,” said Rafizi during the southern zone Ayuh Malaysia Truck Tour at the Johor Baru parliament service centre grounds here last night.

State’s responsivity — to project soft power of Islam

Dr Muhammad Ali Ehsan

September 18, 2022

People always perceive things differently, and if interpretation can be termed an art of understanding and explaining things in different ways then why blame each other for interpreting things differently. Let there be disagreements and dissents but let them remain small and not grow larger than our egos. That way, maybe having different perceptions and in turn believing in different realities may become not a vice but a great virtue of the society. Historically, the growth and development of all grand human struggles and their profound consequences wouldn’t have resulted if men had not chosen to perceive things differently. Not the Steve Jobs and Bill Gates of recent years but the Greeks and the Romans, the Europeans, the Mongols, the Ottomans and the Ataturks of yester years all perceived the world around them differently.

Different perceptions build different realities and difference in perception not only split friends, families and communities at a larger scale, these differences take the form of extreme polarisation and splits even the countries. For a decade or two, our society has been consumed with the disease of extreme polarisation and that is sickening us to the core. Our problem was not to find who is the best to rule the country but how best the country could be ruled. In trying to find the answer to the former, the latter has become a joke.

Even the best of the geniuses has their blind spots so there never is going to be a perfect ruler and his or her interpretation of a given situation or a problem will always remain open to questioning and debate. This is simple if I am professing this in one of my university classes but situating the same concept in politics becomes a monumental job. But our students of today are the policymakers and politicians of tomorrow and there lies the hope of infiltrating their minds and bridging an intellectual gap with a wish that such plain logic will help them stand up and face the great responsibility of running the affairs of this country in much different and better ways in future.

Graft cases against leaders of ruling coalition lose steam

Zulqernain Tahir

September 18, 2022

LAHORE: As under the newly amended accountability laws, courts have started sending back corruption references — involving an amount less than Rs500 million — to the anti-graft watchdog, with its new chief apparently in no hurry to forward them to a relevant forum for action, the corruption cases such as Ramzan Sugar Mills virtually stand closed, at least for the time being, Dawn has learnt.

Almost all such references were against those linked with the incumbent coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a source in the federal government disclosed on Saturday.

A former prosecutor general believes referring the cases back to National Accountability Bureau does not mean ‘crime is not committed’ and the fact that there were dozens of such cases cannot be ignored.

Moroccan Muslims Reviving Jewish Heritage In Former Jewish Neighbourhoods

09.17.22

Moroccans now living in the mellahs – historic urban neighbourhoods in Moroccan cities that were once thriving Jewish quarters – do not know anything about the people who lived there before them. These neighborhoods later became small, mostly poor ghettos, with little to no connection to Jews today.

But a new program might change this. “Rebuilding Our Homes” is a multi-year US Agency for International Development-supported New Partnership Initiative of the American Sephardi Federation and Mimouna Association. It aims to revive the prosperous Jewish life in the historic urban areas in Fez, Essaouira and Rabat, by teaching their current residents about local history, and helping to make them part of the rich heritage of the place.

“We make the residents of these neighborhoods take part in preserving the place by letting them document and upload photos of old Jewish houses to our archive, and teaching them Hebrew,” explained Jason Guberman, executive director of the American Sephardi Federation.

Iran's Chabahar port crucial for landlocked Afghanistan's foreign trade

September 17, 2022

Landlocked Afghanistan faces many issues related to trade as it has to cross Iran or Pakistan to reach water ports as the seaports accelerate the rate of international trade and act as an inhibitor in trade cost.

Mirza Ahmad Ebrahimi, a PhD research scholar writing in Khaama Press in an op-ed page analysed Afghanistan's two options, Chabahar or Karachi seaport.

Chabahar seaport via Iran was found to be the utmost sustainable one as a trade route. To connect Afghanistan with Iran's Zabul province for smoothing and accelerating goods movement, the Delaram-Zaranj Highway with a 218 km roadway in the Nimruz province was designed and constructed by the government of India at the request of Afghanistan and cost USD 175 million.

No dollars for food imports from Iran, Afghanistan

Shahid Iqbal

September 18, 2022

KARACHI: The food importers, especially vegetables, from Afghanistan and Iran have been relying on the grey market to make payments since they are not allowed to buy dollars from banks or exchange companies, Dawn has learnt.

The country has been facing an acute shortage of tomatoes, onions, potatoes, etc after floods destroyed crops pushing up prices to unprecedented levels across the country.

This situation has forced the government to immediately allow imports of these foodstuffs from neighbouring countries to bridge the supply and demand gap but it has not made any arrangements for the provision of greenbacks to make payments against these imports.

Taliban Condemns US forming Swiss-based Trust for Afghan Frozen Funds

By Arif Ahmadi

17 Sep 2022

KABUL, Afghanistan – The Taliban’s foreign affairs ministry on Thursday condemned the United States’ decision to transfer Afghan central bank reserves into a Swiss-based trust, according to sources, saying it was against international norms.

The U.S. decision “to transfer a part of the reserves of the Central Bank of Afghanistan to Switzerland and use it for targeted disbursement without any input by Afghanistan as unacceptable and a violation of international norms,” spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi said in a statement, as Reuters quoted.

North-East govs: Our role in Boko Haram decimation

September 18, 2022

By Opinion Nigeria

Chairman of the North-East Governors Forum (NEGF) and governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, says since the formation of the forum, its members have painstakingly discussed issues of common interest which led to the decimation of Boko Haram and other criminally- minded people through shared intelligence.

Zulum observed that the non-kinetic approach initiated and adopted by the Forum with support of the Federal Government to address the menace of Boko Haram insurgency has come a long way to opening up a corridor for many members of the sect to lay down their arms.

Speaking at the opening of the 7th North East Governors Forum in Gombe at the weekend, he said it is a matter of necessity for governors of the sub-region to maintain a strong and unwavering position towards addressing the menace of kidnapping that is fast becoming a new normal across the country.
