DMK Not Against Ram Temple; Don't Agree With Shrine Built After Demolishing Mosque: Tamil Nadu Minister

DMK leader and Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin

-----

18.01.24

DMK leader and Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday said his party is not against the Ram temple at Ayodhya but is opposed to the shrine coming up after "demolishing a mosque".

The late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi had stated that DMK is not against a particular religion or faith, Udhayanidhi said, speaking to reporters in Chennai.

"We don't have a problem with a temple coming up there. We are not in agreement with the construction of a temple after demolishing a mosque," the DMK Youth Wing chief said, referring to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992.

"Our Treasurer (T R Baalu) has already stated that spiritualism and politics should not be mixed," Udhayanidhi, who holds the state Youth Welfare and Sports Development portfolio, said.

The consecration of the grand temple at Ramjanmabhoomi in Ayodhya will be held on January 22.

To a question on the NEET exam that Tamil Nadu has been battling to do away with, Udhayanidhi said the party has received about 85 lakh signatures against the target of 50 lakh, as part of its anti-NEET campaign. They would be handed over to party president and Chief Minister M K Stalin during the January 21 Youth Wing conference in Salem.

Later, the signatures, which have been received online and through post, would be handed over to the President in New Delhi, he added.

Around 3-4 lakh participants are expected to attend the Salem conference, he said.’

US Says ‘No Way’ To Solve Israel Security, Gaza War Without Palestinian State

19 Jan 2024

WASHINGTON, Jan 19 — There is “no way” to solve Israel’s long-term security challenges in the region and the short-term challenges of rebuilding Gaza without the establishment of a Palestinian state, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Thursday.

Speaking at a news briefing, Miller said Israel had an opportunity right now as countries in the region were ready to provide security assurances to Israel.

“But there is no way to solve their long-term challenges to provide lasting security and there is no way to solve the short-term challenges of rebuilding Gaza and establishing governance in Gaza and providing security for Gaza without the establishment of a Palestinian state.”

The comments came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a press conference he had told Washington that he objected to any Palestinian statehood that did not guarantee Israel’s security.

“I clarify that in any arrangement in the foreseeable future, with an accord or without an accord, Israel must have security control over the entire territory west of the Jordan River. That’s a necessary condition. It clashes with the principle of sovereignty but what can you do,” Netanyahu said in Tel Aviv.

He added that the lack of Palestinian statehood had not stood in the way of normalisation agreements with Arab states a few years ago and that he still intended to add more countries to those accords.

Israel and its biggest backer the United States appear at odds now, with Netanyahu and his right-wing coalition government largely rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state even though Washington maintains that the two-state solution is the only feasible way to bring lasting peace to the region.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in his fourth trip to the Middle East last week since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas, took a rough agreement to Israel that its predominately Muslim neighbours would help rehabilitate Gaza after the war and continue economic integration with Israel, but only if it committed to eventually allowing the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

US-brokered talks on a Palestinian state in territory now occupied by Israel collapsed almost a decade ago.

The latest episode of hostilities in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict started when Hamas militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages. Israel says more than 130 remain in captivity.

Israel responded to Hamas’ assault with a siege, bombardment and ground invasion of Gaza that have devastated the tiny coastal territory and killed more than 24,000 people, according to Gaza health officials.

Despite the disagreements, US support for longtime ally Israel “remains ironclad,” Miller said.

“This is not a question of the United States pressuring them to do anything. This is about the United States laying out for them the opportunity that they have.” — Reuters

Netanyahu Says He Told The US That He Opposes A Palestinian State In Any Post-War Scenario

January 19, 2024

JERUSALEM: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday rejected calls from the United States to scale back Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip or take steps toward the establishment of a Palestinian state after the war, drawing an immediate scolding from the White House.

The tense back and forth reflected what has become a wide rift between the two allies over the scope of Israel’s war and its plans for the future of the beleaguered territory.

“We obviously see it differently,” White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said.

Netanyahu spoke just a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Israel would never have “genuine security” without a pathway toward Palestinian independence. Earlier this week, the White House also announced that it was the “right time” for Israel to lower the intensity of its devastating military offensive in Gaza.

In a nationally televised news conference, Netanyahu struck a defiant tone, repeatedly saying that Israel would not halt its offensive until it realizes its goals of destroying Gaza’s Hamas militant group and bringing home all remaining hostages held by Hamas.

He rejected claims by a growing chorus of Israeli critics that those goals are not achievable, vowing to press ahead for many months. “We will not settle for anything short of an absolute victory,” Netanyahu said.

Israel launched the offensive after an unprecedented cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7 that killed 1,200 people and took some 250 others hostage. Roughly 130 hostages are believed by Israel to remain in Hamas captivity. The war has stoked tensions across the region, threatening to ignite other conflicts.

Israel’s assault, one of the deadliest and most destructive military campaigns in recent history, has killed nearly 25,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities, caused widespread destruction and uprooted over 80 percent of the territory’s 2.3 million people from their homes.

The staggering cost of the war has led to increasing calls from the international community to halt the offensive. After initially giving Israel wall-to-wall support in the early days of the war, the United States, Israel’s closest ally, has begun to express misgivings and urged Netanyahu to spell out his vision for postwar Gaza.

The United States has said the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority, which governs semi-autonomous zones in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, should be “revitalized” and return to Gaza. Hamas ousted the authority from Gaza in 2007.

The US has also called for steps toward the establishment of a Palestinian state. The Palestinians seek Gaza, the West Bank and east Jerusalem for their state. Those areas were captured by Israel in 1967.

Speaking Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Blinken said the two-state solution was the best way to protect Israel, unify moderate Arab countries and isolate Israel’s arch-enemy, Iran.

Without a “pathway to a Palestinian state,” he said, Israel would not “get genuine security.”

At the same conference, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said the kingdom is ready to establish full relations with Israel as part of a larger political agreement. “But that can only happen through peace for the Palestinians, through a Palestinian state,” he said.

Netanyahu, who leads a far-right government opposed to Palestinian statehood, repeated his longstanding opposition to a two-state solution. He said a Palestinian state would become a launching pad for attacks on Israel.

He said Israel “must have security control over the entire territory west of the Jordan River,” adding: “That collides with the idea of sovereignty. What can we do?”

“This truth I tell to our American friends, and I put the brakes on the attempt to coerce us to a reality that would endanger the state of Israel,” he said.

The comments prompted an immediate rebuke from the White House. Kirby said that President Joe Biden would “not stop working” toward a two-state solution.

Before Oct. 7, Israeli society was bitterly divided over Netanyahu’s plan for a judicial overhaul. Since the attack, the country has rallied behind the war. But divisions have once again begun to surface over Netanyahu’s handling of the war.

Families of the hostages and their many supporters have called for a new cease-fire that could bring them home. Hamas released over 100 hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners during a weeklong cease-fire in November.

Dozens of people attended a somber gathering in Tel Aviv in solidarity with the family of Kfir Bibas, the youngest Israeli hostage, marking his first birthday. The red-haired infant and his 4-year-old brother Ariel were taken hostage along with their mother, Shiri, and their father, Yarden. All four remain in captivity.

Commentators have begun to question whether Netanyahu’s objectives are realistic, given the slow pace of the offensive and growing international criticism, including genocide accusations at the United Nations world court, which Israel vehemently denies.

Netanyahu’s opponents accuse him of delaying any discussion of postwar scenarios to avoid looming investigations of governmental failures, keep his coalition intact and put off elections. Polls show that the popularity of Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption charges, has plummeted during the war.

Medicines bound for hostages enter Gaza

There was no word Thursday on whether medicines that entered the territory as part of a deal brokered by France and Qatar had been distributed to dozens hostages with chronic illnesses who are being held by Hamas.

The agreement was the first to be brokered between the warring sides since November. The deal includes large shipments of medicine, food and humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians as well.

Qatar confirmed late Wednesday that the medicine had entered Gaza, but it was not yet clear if it had been distributed to the hostages, who are being held in secret locations, including underground bunkers.

The International Committee for the Red Cross, which helped facilitate the hostage releases, said it was not involved in distributing the medicine.

Fighting in Gaza

Hamas has continued to fight back across Gaza, even in the most devastated areas, and launch rockets into Israel. It says it will not release any more hostages until there is a permanent cease-fire, something Israel and the United States, its top ally, have ruled out.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have heeded Israeli evacuation orders and packed into southern Gaza, where shelters run by the United Nations are overflowing and massive tent camps have gone up.

Israel has continued to strike what it says are militant targets in all parts of Gaza, often killing women and children. Early Thursday, medics said an Israeli airstrike on a home killed 16 people, half of them children, in the southern Gaza town of Rafah.

Israel blames the high civilian death toll on Hamas because it fights in dense residential areas. Israel says its forces have killed roughly 9,000 militants, without providing evidence, and that 193 of its own soldiers have been killed since the Gaza ground offensive began.

On Thursday, the Israeli army said it had destroyed “the heart” of Hamas’ weapons manufacturing industry near a major north-south road in central Gaza. It said the complex included weapons factories and an extensive tunnel network used to ship arms throughout Gaza.

War reverberates across region

The war has rippled across the Middle East, with Iranian-backed groups attacking US and Israeli targets. Low-intensity fighting between Israel and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon threatens to erupt into all-out war, and Houthi rebels in Yemen continue to target international shipping despite United States-led airstrikes.

The Israeli military said it fired an interceptor at a “suspicious aerial target” — likely a drone or missile — approaching over the Red Sea on Thursday, triggering air raid sirens in the southern city of Eilat. The Houthis have launched drones and missiles toward Israel that mostly fell short or were intercepted and shot down.

Meanwhile, Iran has launched a series of missile attacks targeting what it described as an Israeli spy base in Iraq and militant bases in Syria.

Radical Islamist Mohamed Hoblos Barred From Entering The Netherlands For Utrecht Event

19 JANUARY 2024

Controversial Islamic speaker Mohamed Hoblos will not be allowed to enter the Netherlands, Justice Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz confirmed on Thursday night. He was supposed to give a speech at an event in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht this weekend, but cancelled claiming he was denied access without saying by whom.

"Freedom of expression is a great asset, but there is no place in the Netherlands for people who propagate extremist ideas," said Yeşilgöz. Hoblos is registered in the Schengen Information System (SIS), in which European countries share information about extremists, and others deemed undesireable. "That is why this person will be denied entry to the Netherlands," the minister said.

The possible arrival of Hoblos in the Netherlands was also poorly received by the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament. The ChristenUnie, SGP, BBB, VVD and CDA urged the Ministry of Justice and Security to enforce an entry ban against the Australian-Lebanese man who glorifies the violence by the radical Islamic Palestinian movement Hamas, and also calls on other Muslims to fully support it.

Utrecht Mayor Sharon Dijksma also spoke out on Thursday against the possible arrival of Hoblos. "I think that if someone makes such extreme statements, he should not be given a stage in Utrecht," she said. "There is always room for dialogue and expression in our city, but not for calls for violence and hate speech."

According to a spokesperson for the municipality of Utrecht, it currently appears that the preacher "will not speak" at the Jaarbeurs. "If he does do so via a video connection, we will look at how we will deal with this with the various parties," the spokesperson said.

The organizer of the event, Dawah Group, announced on their Facebook page that it will share more information and further details on Friday now that the preacher is no longer coming. A spokesperson for the Jaarbeurs said on Thursday evening that it had no new information about the event.

The organizer does not understand the commotion surrounding Hoblos. The Dawah Group said it was unaware that he wasn’t welcome in the Schengen area. “The image we have of him is also different from the image we now read in various media.” It said it knows of no examples in which the preacher “as an individual has been concretely linked to, suspected of, let alone prosecuted for involvement of any form of (recruitment for) terrorism.”

According to the Dawah Group, “Hoblos is an Islamic preacher with great popularity within the Islamic community in the West.” The organization asked him to give a “motivational lecture on the purpose of life, how to be a good Muslim to your loved ones, and how to be an asset to society.”

BJP Courts Sufi and Pasmanda Muslims in Karnataka Ahead of 2024 Elections

January 18, 2024

In the Indian state of Karnataka, a concerted effort is underway to engage its Muslim population, constituting 12.5% of the total populace, in the political landscape. Given the steady decline in Muslim representation in the legislative assembly and parliament, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is resorting to innovative strategies that resonate with the minority community.

Sufism: A Bridge to the Muslim Community

The BJP is turning to Sufism, a mystical form of Islam revered for its inclusive and peaceful approach, to connect with the Muslim community. The party is planning a large-scale outreach program known as the ‘Sufi Samvad Maha Abhiyan’ to educate the Muslim community about various government schemes and seek their support.

PM Modi’s Engagement with Sufism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown a keen interest in Sufism, having participated in related activities such as offering a sacred chadar to a Sufi saint’s shrine. Such gestures are part of the BJP’s strategy to forge a stronger bond with the Muslim community and mitigate any perceived antipathy.

BJP’s Outreach to Pasmanda Muslims

Simultaneously, the party is extending its outreach to Pasmanda Muslims, a socially and economically disadvantaged subgroup within the Muslim community known as Pinjaras or Nadafs in Karnataka. The BJP’s focus on this demographic is strategic, even though their numbers are smaller compared to other states.

Fostering Sufi Heritage: The Sufi Circuit

The BJP is also contemplating the development of a nationwide ‘Sufi Circuit’ to foster and promote Sufi heritage. Currently, Bihar is the only state with such a circuit. This initiative is expected to attract Muslim support by preserving and showcasing the richness of Sufi traditions.

Future Scope: Muslim Candidates in Assembly Elections

Although the Karnataka BJP has traditionally not fielded Muslim candidates in Assembly elections, preferring to nominate them to the Legislative Council, a shift in this stance is potentially on the horizon. The party is considering giving tickets to Muslim candidates in future elections, with a current proposal for Abdul Azeem to run from Bengaluru North.

By targeting Sufis, women, and economically deprived Muslim classes, the BJP’s revised approach aims to regain its foothold in Karnataka ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Ram Temple Was Not Issue Of Conflict Between Hindus, Muslims At Time Of Independence: Defence Minister

18 JAN 2024

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said the Ram temple was not an issue of conflict between Hindus and Muslims at the time of independence and every community has supported the 'Ram Janmabhoomi Andolan' in some way.

Asserting that one cannot imagine India without Ram, Singh said the grand temple being built in Ayodhya is a symbol of "restoration" of Indian culture.

The minister was speaking at the launch of a book -- "Rom Rom Mein Ram". The book is a compilation of essays written by the late senior journalist and MP Ashwini Chopra and others.

Singh said the Ram temple is being constructed after a wait of 500 years.

"The new Ram temple being built in Ayodhya is a symbol of restoration of Indian culture. One cannot imagine India without Ram," he said.

"Ayodhya will be a symbol of a new India which will give India the ability to lead the world once again. Ayodhya will become an inspiration for the rest of the world," he said.

Singh said the Ram temple was not an issue of conflict between Hindus and Muslims at the time of independence.

"Twelve Muslims had given an affidavit and supported the Ram temple at that time... It was not a matter of conflict between Hindus and Muslims, it was a matter linked with the faith of Hindus," he said.

The first FIR related to the Ram temple was registered against a group of Sikhs, he said.

"Every community has supported the Ram Janmabhoomi Andolan in some way. In the 80s and 90s, some parties opposed it for vote bank politics and that continues," he added.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi talks of 'garib kalyan' (welfare of the poor), the thought is inspired by Lord Ram, the defence minister said.

He also praised Modi for starting a special 11-day religious exercise preceding the January 22 consecration ceremony at the Ram temple.

"Modi ji has been doing an 11-day-long sadhana... I could have never imagined someone in politics can also be a 'sadhak'," he said.

In an audio message on January 12, Modi had said scriptures lay down strict and arduous guidelines for people to follow for 'Pran Pratishtha'.

He said was starting the special exercise going by the guidelines he had received from eminent people on the spiritual journey.

Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah Dispute -Plea In Allahabad HC For Revenue Survey To Ascertain The Mosque’s Actual Location

January 18, 2024

Ishita Mishra

A plea has been moved in the Allahabad High Court seeking the appointment of a revenue surveyor to inspect premises of the Shahi Idgah mosque, which stands next to the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple in Mathura, to ascertain the mosque’s actual location.

The development follows a Supreme Court order staying the execution of a High Court directive to appoint a commissioner to survey the mosque.

The plea moved by advocates Vishnu Shankar Jain and Prabhash Pandey at the High Court on January 16 was taken on record by the Bench of Justice Mayank Kumar Jain, who is also hearing a batch of cases pertaining to the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute.

The matter will come-up for hearing on January 30.

The application seeks a revenue survey report of the mosque to know whether the Shahi Idgah mosque falls within the area of 13.37 acres of land that is at the centre of the dispute.

“...Now the lis between the parties is as to whether the disputed structure falls within the 13.37 acres land of Katra Keshav Dev which was purchased by Raja Patni Mal or the same is outside the said area. Therefore, with a view to ascertain as to whether the dispute structure is existing within [the] 13.37 acres of land... the Court may direct survey of the land in question,” the plea said.

The main suit pertaining to the dispute demands the removal of the mosque as the petitioners, the Hindu worshippers, believe Lord Shri Krishna Virajman was born at the place where the mosque currently stands.

The petitioners maintain that the mosque was built on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb after demolishing a Hindu temple.

Hearing a batch of cases, the HC last year ordered a survey of the mosque by a three-member commissioner team, but the order was stayed by the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

A local court in Agra on Wednesday, January 17, dismissed the Muslim side’s petition against a case in which claims were made that idols of Lord Keshavdev were buried under the steps of Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra.

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Sanrakshit Seva Trust made these claims in May last year and sought a survey.

According to reports, after hearing both parties, the court gave its decision and rejected the Muslim side’s plea. The next hearing will be held on February 2 on the petitions seeking a survey of Jama Masjid by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Water tank in Varanasi's Gyanvapi mosque complex to be cleaned on January 20

19.01.24

The cleaning of the sealed water tank in the Gyanvapi mosque complex here will be undertaken on Saturday after the Supreme Court gave its nod for it.

The Supreme Court had on January 16 allowed a plea moved by Hindu women plaintiffs for cleaning the water tank in the Gyanvapi mosque that is located in an area that has been sealed.

A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra had ordered the cleaning of the water tank under the supervision of the Varanasi district magistrate.

Madan Mohan Yadav, counsel for the Hindu side, said District Magistrate S Rajlingam held separate meetings with the Hindu side and Anzuman Intezamia masjid committee on Thursday and decided that the cleaning work will start on Saturday at about 9 am. The work will be completed around 11 am, he said.

During the cleaning of the tank, which is also called Wazukhana by Muslims, two representatives from both the parties will be present.

The cleaning work will be done in such a way that no one's religious sentiments are hurt, he said.

The Varanasi district court had on July 21 last year directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a "detailed scientific survey" -- including excavations, wherever necessary -- to determine if the mosque located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple was built upon a temple.

The mosque's "wazukhana" (a small reservoir where devotees perform ritual ablutions), where a structure claimed by the Hindu litigants to be a "Shivling" exists, will not be part of the survey, following an earlier Supreme Court order protecting that spot in the mosque complex.

Hindu activists claim that a temple existed earlier at the site and was demolished in the 17th century on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

Indian Navy picks up crew after ship hit off Yemen coast

 2024-01-19

NEW DELHI/WASHINGTON: The Indian Navy said on Thursday it had rescued the crew of a US-owned vessel in the Gulf of Aden after an attack by Yemen’s Houthi movement as tensions in the region’s sea lanes disrupted global trade.

Following the attack on the US Genco Picardy late on Wednesday, the US military said its forces had conducted strikes on 14 Houthi missiles that “presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and US Navy ships in the region”.

Attacks by the Iran-allied Houthi militia on ships in and around the Red Sea since November have slowed trade between Asia and Europe and alarmed major powers in an escalation of the war between Israel and Palestinian Hamas in Gaza.

The Houthis say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians and have threatened to target US ships in response to American and British strikes on the group’s positions.

The strategy pursued by US President Joe Biden - a blend of limited military strikes and sanctions - appears aimed at preventing a wider Middle East conflict even as Washington seeks to punish the Houthis, security and military experts say.

US Senate Panel Narrowly Advances Nomination of Adeel Mangi as First Muslim American Federal Appeals Court Judge

January 18, 2024

Nitish Verma

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee has taken a pivotal step in American judicial history by advancing the nomination of Adeel Mangi, potentially the first Muslim American federal appeals court judge, to the full Senate for consideration. Mangi’s nomination for a seat on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was among 19 lifetime federal bench nominations by President Joe Biden that progressed despite contentious debates.

A Controversial Nomination

The nomination process has not been without controversy, particularly for Mangi. During a Dec. 13 hearing, Republicans questioned Mangi about his connection to Rutgers Law School’s Center for Security, Race and Rights, where he served on an advisory board. They expressed unease regarding the center’s stance on Israel and the events it hosted, especially those concerning the Israel-Hamas war and the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Accusations of Islamophobia

Democrats accused Republican senators of Islamophobic questioning. Democratic Senator Dick Durbin criticized such lines of inquiry as biased attacks on Mangi’s faith. Amid the turbulent exchanges, Mangi’s nomination advanced with a narrow 11-10 party-line vote.

White House Response

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates defended Mangi as a qualified attorney, condemning the smears against him by some Republican senators. As Mangi’s nomination moves to the full Senate for consideration, it marks a significant moment in the country’s history if confirmed, he will become the first Muslim American to serve on a federal appeals court.

Despite the controversy surrounding his nomination, Mangi remains a symbol of potential transformative change in the American judiciary. His nomination signifies a break from tradition, challenging the underrepresentation of Muslim Americans in federal courts. As the nation watches, Mangi’s nomination could set a precedent, paving the way for greater diversity in the American judicial system.

Former Obama adviser gets 'sweetheart deal' with anti-bias course for harassing Muslim vendor in New York

Servet Günerigök, Michael Gabriel Hernandez

19.01.2024

Stuart Seldowitz, a former Obama administration adviser, agreed to a plea to undergo "anti-bias" training to avoid jail time for threats and Islamophobic comments against a Muslim food vendor in New York City.

Seldowitz, 64, was charged in November with aggravated harassment, hate crime stalking, stalking causing fear and stalking at a place of employment.

He reached the plea deal Wednesday.

If Seldowitz completes the 26-week anti-bias course at Queens Counseling for Change (QCC), has no new arrests and no violations of an order of protection, prosecutors will move for adjournment in contemplation of dismissal, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office confirmed to Anadolu.

The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) on Thursday condemned the "sweetheart deal" Seldowitz received.

"Seldowitz’s vile verbal abuse and harassment targeting an innocent street vendor were caught on video for all to see. The sweetheart deal he received from the Manhattan DA’s office is a shameful affront of our justice system and wholly unfitting of his actions," CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said in a statement.

Seldowitz served as the acting director for the National Security Council South Asia Directorate under former US President Barack Obama. He also worked as a senior political officer in the State Department’s Office of Israel and Palestinian Affairs in the early 2000s.

Vile videos

The former official sparked anger after videos surfaced last year that showed him harassing a Muslim vendor.

In one video circulated on the internet, Seldowitz called the vendor a "terrorist" and said: "You support terrorism. You support killing little children. You’re a terrible person.”

The vendor replied: "You kill children, not me.” Before leaving, Seldowitz said: "If we killed 4,000 Palestinian kids, you know what? It wasn’t enough. It wasn’t enough."

In another video which was taken during an evening encounter with the same vendor, Seldowitz talks about "his friends in immigration" and said, "The Mukhabarat wants your picture," referring to Egypt’s intelligence agency.

Wearing a green hoodie, he said: "The Mukhabarat in Egypt will get your parents. Does your father like his fingernails? They’ll take them out one by one."

The vendor responded, telling him to, "Go, go, go."

Seldowitz then picks up his phone and appears to take a picture of the vendor and tells him to "smile for me."

Refusing to leave the area, he makes insults against Prophet Muhammad and asks the vendor: "Did you rape your daughter like Muhammad did? Did you rape your daughter like Muhammad?"

He later referred to Prophet Muhammad as a "rapist."

The vendor said he does not speak English but Seldowitz continued his harassment.

"What do you speak? You speak Arabic, the language of the Quran, the holy Quran that some people use as a toilet. What do you think of that, people who used the Quran as a toilet? Does it bother you?" he asks mockingly.

"That’s why you're selling food in a food cart, because you’re ignorant. But you should learn English. It’ll help you when they deport you back to Egypt and then the Mukhabarat wants to interview you,” said Seldowitz.

In another video, he harasses the vendor but is interrupted by a bystander who tells him to leave. "It's not right; you are harassing," he said.

Biden dismisses waning support among Muslim Americans

January 18, 2024

President Biden on Thursday brushed off weakened backing by Muslim Americans amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, saying he still thinks they’ll show up for him on Election Day.

Speaking with reporters at the White House before heading to North Carolina to talk about the economy, Mr. Biden said there is a “long way to go” before the Nov. 5 election.

Mr. Biden added that his expected 2024 opponent, former President Donald Trump, has called for limiting immigration from Muslim-majority countries.

“The former president wants to put a ban on Arabs coming into the country. We’ll make sure that we understand who cares about the Arab population,” Mr. Biden said.

Muslim community leaders have been critical of Mr. Biden’s refusal to demand a cease-fire in Gaza, which has been bombarded by Israel following Hamas’s Oct. 7 terrorist attack. Instead, the president has tried to balance his support for Israel with calls for restraint.

That has led to anger among Muslims and could prove fatal to Mr. Biden’s chances of reelection, since many of the swing states contain large pockets of Arab voting blocs.

Arab Americans account for just a fraction of the U.S. population and about half the number of Jewish Americans. But their largest communities reside in battleground states that could shift the election if they refuse to back Mr. Biden.

Mr. Biden won Nevada in 2020 over Mr. Trump by just 34,000 votes. The Muslim population in the state is 7,400, and any erosion of support could hurt the president’s reelection chances in the Silver State.

The U.S. Religion Census found that the Muslim population in several swing states exceeded Mr. Biden’s margin of victory in 2020.

Mr. Biden won Georgia by 12,000 votes, and its Muslim population is 123,000. He won by 154,000 votes in Michigan, which has more than 242,000 adherents of Islam. Wisconsin, which he won by 21,000 votes, has 69,000 Muslim residents.

CAIR Calls for Hate Crime Probe of ‘Vile’ Racist Message Sent to Maine School District’s Muslim DEI Official

Ismail Allison

January 18, 2024

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate a “vile” racist message sent to a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) official at a school district in Maine as a possible hate crime.

South Portland School Department’s DEI coordinator Mohammed Albehadli’s resigned after he received the racist email last month. Albehadli says he may leave the area over concerns for the safety of his family.

South Portland Superintendent Tim Matheney announced Mohammed Albehadli’s departure and described the racist communication as the “most vile email message I have seen in my 35 years in education.” “Mohammed and his family developed concerns about their safety and reconsidered their decision to live in the area,” Matheney said.

“Growing attacks on American Muslims and other communities in our diverse society must be repudiated,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We urge local, state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate this troubling incident to determine whether it rose to the level of a crime.”

McCaw added: “We also call on local law enforcement authorities to provide Mr. Albehadli and family the protection that they deserve.”

He noted that CAIR recently released updated civil rights data showing that it has continued to receive a “staggering” increase in complaints of anti-Muslim or anti-Arab bias.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations’ mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.

Iran not ‘well-liked’ in region, says Biden after Pakistan strikes

January 19, 2024

The United States has termed Iran’s strike on Pakistan as another example of “destabilisng behavior,” with President Joe Biden saying the recent clashes between the neighbouring countries showed that Tehran is not “well-liked” in the region.

Pakistan launched strikes on terrorists’ hideouts inside Iran on Thursday, in a retaliatory attack two days after Tehran violated the country’s sovereignty by launching a strike in Balochistan that left two children dead and injured three girls.

In a statement, the Pakistan Army said the hideouts used by terrorist militant organisations, namely Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), were successfully struck in an intelligence-based operation, code named — "Marg Bar Sarmachar".

“The precision strikes were carried out using killer drones, rockets, loitering munitions and stand-off weapons. Maximum care was taken to avoid collateral damage,” it added.

Reacting to the clashes, Biden said: "As you can see Iran is not particularly well-liked in the region and where that goes, we're working on now. I don't know where that goes," according to Reuters.

The United States has been locked in a test of wills with Iran over its support for Houthi rebels in Yemen who have been launching attacks against commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Air Force One as Biden flew to North Carolina that Washington is monitoring the Iran-Pakistan clashes closely.

Kirby said the attack on Pakistan was another example of Iran's destabilising behavior in the region.

"These are two well-armed nations and again we don´t want to see an escalation," Kirby told reporters.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller echoed his comments.

"We don´t believe this should escalate in any way, shape or form. Pakistan is a major non-NATO ally of the United States, that will remain the case, but we would urge restraint in this case."

Kirby said he was "not aware" that Islamabad had notified Washington before striking Iran. He would not comment when asked if the United States would provide support for Pakistan.

Separately, UN chief Antonio Guterres expressed concern after Iran and Pakistan exchanged air strikes on each other's territory.

"The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the recent exchange of military strikes between Iran and Pakistan," said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

"He urges both countries to exercise maximum restraint to avoid a further escalation of tensions."

Pakistan’s foreign ministry described Thursday´s raids as a "series of highly coordinated and specifically targeted precision military strikes against terrorist hideouts" in Sistan-Baluchistan.

The strikes took place at around 4:30 am (0100 GMT), with three drones destroying four houses in a village near the city of Saravan, IRNA said, citing Alireza Marhamati, deputy governor of the province.

All of those killed were Pakistanis, and investigations were under way to determine why they were in the Iranian village, Marhamati said.

Nothing justifies what Israel has done in Gaza: UN expert

18 January 2024

A United Nations human rights expert underscores multiple instances of breach of the international law by the Israeli regime, which has brought the Gaza Strip under more than three months of a genocidal war.

"Nothing justifies what Israel has done," Francesca Albanese, who is the UN special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories, said on Thursday, addressing a Madrid news conference.

"Israel has done a number of things that are highly illegal, highly unlawful," she said.

The regime, the expert noted, is obliged to respect the international humanitarian law "to protect people who are not actively involved in combat. Civilians, prisoners of war, and the sick and wounded."

At least 19 Palestinians, including small children, have been killed in the latest Israeli airstrikes on the southern city of Rafah.

"Instead what has happened is over 100 days of relentless bombing -- the first two weeks using 6,000 bombs per week, bombs of 2,000 pounds, in highly crowded area." she said.

"Most hospitals have been made dysfunctional. A good number of them, the major ones, have been closed, bombed or taken over by the army," Albanese said, warning, "People are dying now not only because of the bombs but because there is not sufficient health infrastructure to cure them of wounds."

The World Health Organization says Israel has attacked medical targets across Gaza nearly 600 times.

"The number of kids who get amputated every day is shocking, one or two limbs. During the first two months of this [war], 1,000 kids were amputated without anesthesia. It is a monstrosity," she added.

The Israeli regime began the war on October 7, following an operation staged by Gaza's resistance movements, dubbed Operation al-Aqsa Storm. Tel Aviv has simultaneously been exercising an all-out siege against the Palestinian territory, preventing the flow of water, food, electricity, fuel, and medicine into the coastal sliver.

At least 24,620 Palestinians, around 70 percent of whom are women, children, and adolescents, have been killed in the brutal onslaught so far.

Iran calls on ‘brotherly’ Pakistan to check terrorist bases on its soil

18 January 2024

Iran has addressed “the friendly and brotherly government of Pakistan” after a tiff over Islamabad’s drone attack on an Iranian village near their border, calling on the neighboring state to prevent the establishment of "terrorist bases" on its soil.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said it “condemns the unbalanced and unacceptable action of Pakistan in the drone attack on non-Iranian citizens in a village on the border wall of the two countries”.

Nine people, including four children, were killed after Islamabad admitted attacking a village in Saravan in Iran’s southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province, characterizing it a response to Tehran’s operation against terrorist bases inside Pakistan.

“While the Islamic Republic adheres to the policy of good neighborliness and brotherhood between the two nations and the two governments of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Pakistan and does not allow the enemies to darken the good and fraternal relations between the two countries, it considers the security of the people and the territorial integrity of the country as its red line,” the ministry statement in Tehran said.

“And it strongly expects the friendly and brotherly government of Pakistan to adhere to its commitments in preventing the establishment of bases and armed terrorist groups on Pakistan's soil,” it added.

Iran said on Tuesday it had hit bases of Jaish al-Adl inside Pakistan to prevent another attack after 11 Iranian policemen were killed by the terrorist group in its hit-and-run raid on a police station in the city of Rask last month.

In the Tuesday incident, the ministry said, the border outpost of the IRGC “upon seeing the preparation of a terrorist group to leave for the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran to carry out another terrorist operation similar to the criminal act in Rask, took preventive action against the terrorist group in its barracks and headquarters in the heights of the region and kilometers away from residential areas”.

“This procedure is part of the inherent duties of the border forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran to deal with any imminent terrorist threat against the people and citizens of the country,” the ministry said.

“The account of the government of Pakistan as a friend and brother is separate from armed terrorists and the Islamic Republic of Iran always adheres to its neighborly policy and does not allow its enemies and terrorist allies to strain these relations, especially when the genocide and crimes of the Zionist regime are the first issue of the Islamic world,” it concluded.

Lebanese front widens as civil society vows to establish neutrality

January 18, 2024

NAJIA HOUSSARI

BEIRUT: Hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel expanded into new territory on Thursday as Lebanese civil society figures appealed for national neutrality.

In response to the violence, which began 103 days ago, Lebanon’s deputy speaker of parliament called for urgent diplomatic action.

“The idea of opening the war front is extremely dangerous, and the only solution is through diplomatic means,” said Elias Bou Saab, who also serves as a liaison between the Lebanese government and US envoy Amos Hochstein.

His comments followed a meeting with Egypt’s ambassador to Lebanon, Alaa Moussa.

Bou Saab urged the “importance of continuing to exert diplomatic efforts to reach a solution to end the war and then transition to the post-ceasefire stage in Lebanon, including the issue of demarcating the land borders.”

Meanwhile, Lebanese civil society figures at a major gathering repeated demands for the country to remain neutral in the Israel-Hamas war.

The Greater Lebanon State Gathering drew heads of religious communities, political parties, and diplomatic, social, academic and union leaders to the Maronite Patriarchate headquarters.

Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rahi oversaw the event.

Former President Amin Gemayel called for “reclaiming Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence and unity by establishing neutrality.”

He added: “The time has come for Lebanon to rescue itself by having all components embrace being fully Lebanese first.

“This would complete Lebanon’s national identity and unify it without privileges, only guaranteeing it through a strong and capable state unless we want Lebanon to be divided into areas of influence based on the interests of others at the expense of the national interest.”

Former Minister Ashraf Rifi demanded “reclaiming sovereignty, lifting guardianship, protecting the constitution and activating institutions.”

He added: “We vow to prevent Lebanon from being turned into an arena for settling regional scores. We will restore the state’s stature.

“The army and legitimate security institutions will be the only ones responsible for security. We vow to confront militia weapons, liquidation, assassination and terrorism.”

Activist Hayat Arslan called for “positive neutrality,” adding that it “protects us, adheres to international resolutions, and makes Lebanon a state of law and institutions.”

On Thursday morning, Israeli media reported the firing of at least five shells from Lebanon toward the Al-Manara settlement in the Upper Galilee region.

An Israeli drone bombed a car in Souk El-Khan near Kawkaba on Thursday. Israeli artillery also fired two shells at the outskirts of Kawkaba.

An Israeli drone fired a missile into the garden of a home in the center of the town of Kawkaba, causing serious damage to the site but no casualties. A shell also fell between houses in the town of Hula.

Israeli jets carried out strikes on the outskirts of the towns of Rab El-Thalathine, Al-Taybeh and Odaisseh.

The Marjayoun Plain was shelled by the Israeli army, which also targeted the area between Al-Dhayra and Yarin, and the eastern outskirts of Mays Al-Jabal with heavy smoke and phosphorus bombs.

The Israeli army also fired into forest areas adjacent to the town of Aita Al-Shaab.

Jets were seen flying over the western sector, reaching the villages and towns of the Tyre district.

Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee said in a post on X: “Air Force warplanes raided Hezbollah infrastructure in the Odaisseh area, and the Israeli army attacked Kfarkela and Marjayoun.”

Adraee added that “two shells were fired from Lebanon toward the Arab Al-Aramshe area and landed in open areas.”

On Thursday morning, the Israeli army targeted the vicinity of the Al-Abad military site overlooking the town of Hula, and also hit Tallet Hamames, the Marjayoun Plain, and the Hura and Aaziyyeh areas in Deir Mimas.

Israeli reconnaissance planes continued to fly over the villages of the western and central sectors throughout the night, reaching the outskirts of the Litani River.

This coincided with the launching of flare bombs over the border villages adjacent to the Blue Line.

On Wednesday evening, the Israeli army escalated its attacks, with jets bombing the outskirts of Tyre’s Qalileh town, an extension of the Mieh Mieh Palestinian refugee camp.

The bombing raid killed Hamas member Walid Hassanein, who was later mourned. Others from the refugee camp, including Mohammed Azzam and Abou Nayef, were wounded.

More than 390 educational institutes destroyed in Gaza since Oct. 7

18 January 2024

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas announced the destruction of more than 390 schools, universities, and educational institutions in over 100 days of brutal bombardment of the besieged strip by the Israeli regime.

In a press note issued on Thursday, the resistance movement said, “More than 390 schools, universities, and educational institutions have been destroyed in 100 days, the most recent of which was the bombing of Al-Isra University and the re-bombing of the Islamic University today.”

Hamas said that the destruction of school and university buildings in the Gaza Strip “is a war crime and criminal behavior aimed at destroying all components of human life...”  The resistance group stated that Israel is deliberately targeting the education system to erode the national identity of Palestinians.

Calling on the United Nations and other human rights organizations to document and prosecute the regime for its crimes, Hamas said, “We affirm that our people, through their steadfastness, sacrifices, and resistance, will thwart these despicable plans to undermine the educational system and obliterate the deep-rooted national identity of our Palestinian people.”

WHO reports nearly 600 Israeli attacks on medical targets across Gaza

18 January 2024

The World Health Organization (WHO) says the Israeli regime has staged nearly 600 attacks against medical targets across the Gaza Strip, which the regime has brought under an unrelenting genocidal war.

The attacks, WHO said on Friday, have affected 94 healthcare sites, including 26 out of the territory's 36 hospitals.

According to the United Nations health body, at least 613 people have been killed, and more than 770 others injured during the strikes.

WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier condemned the continuing bombardment and said that the "ongoing reduction of humanitarian space plus the continuing attacks on healthcare are pushing the people of Gaza to breaking point."

More than 22,600 people have died since October 7, when the Israeli regime launched the war in response to an operation staged by Gaza's resistance groups.

The UN humanitarian chief strongly deploreS the situation in the Gaza Strip, which has been suffering under nearly three months of a genocidal Israeli war.

On Thursday, Gaza's Government Media Office said the regime had dropped more than 65,000 tons of missiles and bombs on Gaza throughout the war.

Report says the Israeli regime has dropped more than 65,000 tons of missiles and bombs on Gaza during its ongoing genocidal war against the territory.

Plight of amputees

Also on Friday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on X, former Twitter, that many of Gaza’s amputees would receive treatment days after suffering an injury, reducing the chance that their limbs can be saved.

"Amputees require early physiotherapy and rehabilitation, and proper nursing care, along with optimal nutrition and mental health support – essential services that are currently unavailable due to the heavy toll on health facilities during the conflict," he wrote.

He added that the WHO was working to provide medical supplies to Gaza, but that "so much more is required."

Transparency International's Report ‘Giving Weapon’ To Anti-Democratic Forces: Bangladesh FM

Jan 18, 2024

Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said the Transparency International Bangladesh and the BNP is using similar language and hoped that it will not work as a supportive force to anti-democratic forces.

TIB, in a report published Tuesday, said the 12th parliamentary election was a one-sided one that was staged to appear competitive.

"It seems that there is a similarity in terms of language between what BNP says and what TIB is saying. We expect that TIB will not work as a supportive force for the anti-election and anti-democratic forces," he told reporters at his ministry. He also urged TIB not to "give weapon" to those forces.

The foreign minister hoped that TIB would not turn into "a spokesperson for a group" and uphold its reputation without deviating from its neutral position.

The Awami League joint general secretary said he received several phone calls with questions about the TIB report.

Though TIB was supposed to concentrate on research issues, in most cases, they do not do any research, Hasan Mahmud claimed.

The foreign minister said the election was held in a festive atmosphere and international observers from the US, European Union, Commonwealth, OIC, and others described it as "free and fair".

He said it seems TIB came up with its report with refined remarks made by BNP leaders.

Hasan Mahmud said the Election Commission demonstrated a strong role with the strict imposition of laws including the cancellation of AL candidates and other measures.

"There was no appreciation of EC efforts in the TIB report," he said.

On Tuesday, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman held a press conference to share the findings of the anti-corruption watchdog's study titled "The 12th Parliament Election Process Tracking."

"It is an ominous sign regarding the future of democracy and democratic elections in Bangladesh," he said.

US rules out possibility of not recognising Sheikh Hasina govt

Jan 19, 2024

The United States yesterday ruled out any perception that they will not recognise Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's fourth straight term in office.

At a regular briefing at the US Department of State in Washington DC, a journalist asked, "So, when you say that the election results in Bangladesh were not credible, free, or fair, does this imply that the US will not recognice Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's fourth straight term?"

In reply, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said, "No, no."

Miller said they are now encouraging the government of Bangladesh to credibly and transparently investigate the reports of violence, to hold perpetrators accountable.

"We all urge all parties to reject political violence," he said.

Miller said they remain concerned by the arrest of political opposition members and by the reports of irregularities on election day.

"We regret that not all parties participated, and we condemn the violence that took place during elections and in the months leading up to it," he said.

Worsening economic insecurity under Taliban rule in Afghanistan: UNDP Report

Fidel Rahmati

January 18, 2024

The latest report from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Afghanistan indicates a worsening economic insecurity under the control of the Taliban regime.

Released on Thursday, January 18th, the organization’s report reveals that 69% of Afghanistan’s population faces a shortage of necessities, including healthcare, essential goods, suitable living conditions, and vital job opportunities.

According to this report, the social and economic situation in Afghanistan has darkened since the emergence of the Taliban administration, resulting in severe economic insecurity for the population.

The UNDP report states that currently, seven out of every ten people in Afghanistan are unable to meet their basic life requirements and are grappling with economic insecurity.

The findings of this organization continue to highlight the attack on women’s rights and its consequences, alongside the collapse of the banking system in Afghanistan, as undeniable setbacks that have raised serious concerns.

Since the Taliban assumed control in Afghanistan, they have imposed severe restrictions on women, including bans on education and working with aid agencies, both domestic and international. These restrictions have further aggravated the economic plight of the Afghan population, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis in the country.

Malaysia court stays BNP leader Quayum’s deportation

 Jan 18, 2024

Malaysian High Court today granted a stay on deportation order against MA Quayum, a senior BNP leader who has been staying in Malaysia under a Second Home programme and as a UNHCR-registered refugee.

He was arrested in a joint operation between the police and Bangladeshi intelligence on January 12, reported New Straits Times today.

The case was heard before Judge K Muniandy this morning.

Malaysian human rights body Suara Rakyat Malaysia Executive Director Sevan Doraisamy in a statement said the arrest and detention were especially unwarranted, as Quayum was a UNHCR-recognised refugee with an active UNHCR card.

"We demand the Immigration Department to fully comply with this court order and immediately cease any plans to deport Quayum.

"The reprehensible act of defying the temporary court order and forcibly deporting asylum seekers that was cruelly executed three years ago should not be repeated," he said.

He said the government must uphold its commitment to respect and protect refugees fleeing persecution, as well as refrain from forcibly returning them to a country where they might face harm.

Quayum's son Navid Tanvin Ananta said his father is a "victim of political persecution" that began in September 2015 when an Italian national named Cesare Tavella was murdered in Dhaka that year.

He said immediately after the Tavella murder, ISIS claimed responsibility. In mid-2016, the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) also found ties to a militant group neo-JMB in these killings.

However, the detective branch has ignored ISIS's claims and Rab's statement and continued the court proceedings against Quayum and his brother, he added.

Blackburn imams speak out over banning of Hizb ut-Tahrir

January 19, 2024

Shuiab Khan

Imams and Islamic scholars from Blackburn and Burnley have condemned the government’s decision to ban Hizb ut-Tahrir as a proscribed terrorist organisation.

In a joint statement, the 47 scholars ‘representing various diverse schools of thought’, said the decision represented ‘a severe assault on the fundamental freedoms of speech, association and belief and is a clear infringement of civil liberties’.

Eleven male and female scholars from Blackburn are included on the list along with others from Burnley and Chorley.

Earlier this week , the Home Secretary James Cleverly said Hizb ut-Tahrir should be banned as a terrorist organisation and branded it “antisemitic” and warned it “promotes and encourages terrorism”.

Hizb ut-Tahrir is described as an international pan-Islamist and Islamic fundamentalist political organisation, with the stated aim of re-establishing a Islamic caliphate to unite the Muslim community (called ummah) and to implement sharia law globally.

The group is already banned in a number of countries worldwide, including majority Muslim nations such as Pakistan, Kazakhstan, and all Arab countries except Lebanon, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates, along with other nations such as Germany.

Home Secretary James Cleverly moved to proscribe the group by putting an order before Parliament, which would make joining or supporting the organisation illegal in the UK under terror laws, the Home Office said.

Labour has welcomed the plan, with shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper saying there had “long been serious concerns” about the group.

The statement from the imams and scholars said: “Hizb ut-Tahrir is a non-violent global political and religious movement that advocates its views through legitimate means.

"Under international law, the Palestinian people possess the right to resist Israeli occupation.

“The press release by the Palestinian branch of Hizb ut-Tahrir reflects this legitimate position, which cannot be equated with encouraging terrorism.

"To label such expressions as threats to UK’s national security is not only misleading but a deliberate attempt to suppress support for the just cause of Palestinian resistance.

“We also note that the Home Secretary is turning a blind eye to British citizens who are returning from Israel, despite their engagement in acts of terror and potentially killing innocent civilians, along with the security threats posed by such individuals.

“Instead of addressing this, the Home Secretary’s decision to proscribe Hiz but-Tahrir appears to be steering the UK toward an alarming trajectory of authoritarianism."

In a statement, Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain denied it is antisemitic or encourages terrorism and said it will challenge the proposed proscription “using all available legal means”.

The proposal was debated in Parliament this week and the ban would come into force on Friday, making Hizb ut-Tahrir the 80th organisation to be proscribed in the UK.

It would mean “belonging to, inviting support for and displaying articles in a public place in a way that arouses suspicion of membership or support for the group” will be a criminal offence.

France says EU to adopt sanctions against Hamas on Monday

January 18, 2024

PARIS: The European Union will adopt sanctions Monday against Hamas in response to the Palestinian group’s deadly October 7 attack on Israel, France said Thursday.

Brussels will adopt “a regime of sanctions against Hamas,” French foreign ministry spokesman Christophe Lemoine told reporters, adding that they would target “individuals and transfers of funds.”

The punitive measures will target Hamas and some of its leaders involved in the unprecedented October 7 attacks against southern Israel that resulted in the death of about 1,140 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Militants seized about 250 hostages during the October 7 attacks, around 132 of whom Israel says remain in Gaza.

On Tuesday, the EU added Hamas Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar to its “terrorist” sanctions blacklist over the October 7 attacks.

The move means that the accused mastermind of the attacks is subject to an asset freeze in the 27-nation bloc and bans EU citizens from conducting transactions with him.

In December, the EU added two of Hamas’s top military commanders, Mohammed Deif and Marwan Issa, to its terrorist blacklist.

Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas is already listed as a “terrorist” organization by the EU.

Vowing to destroy Hamas, Israel is conducting relentless bombardment and a ground offensive which have killed at least 24,448 Palestinians, around 70 percent of them women, children and adolescents, according to Gaza health ministry figures.

Denmark to join Britain-US coalition against Houthis: govt

January 18, 2024

COPENHAGEN: Denmark said Thursday that it would join a Britain-US coalition that has carried out airstrikes against Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen who are behind a recent spate of attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

The Houthis say their attacks are in support of Palestinians in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

Washington and London have launched a series of strikes against Houthi positions to bring an end to the attacks that have caused shipping companies to bypass the Red Sea, significantly adding to journey times and cost.

“We have responded to the request for Denmark to take part in the coalition,” Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen told reporters.

He said Denmark would contribute an officer from its general staff who would take part in planning operations.

“This is a serious situation, one in which Denmark says it will also take political responsibility to bring an end to what is going on,” Poulsen said.

The Scandinavian country, which has previously said it would send a frigate to the region, is home to shipping giant Maersk, which has rerouted its ships away from the Red Sea.

In December, the Pentagon said 20 countries had joined the Washington-led coalition to protect the key shipping lane.

Mexico, Chile urge ICC to investigate Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza

19 January 2024

Mexico and Chile have asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, citing the “escalation of violence against civilian targets”.

Mexico's foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday that the ICC was the proper forum to establish potential criminal responsibility, "whether committed by agents of the occupying power or the occupied power."

The statement said Mexico and Chile referred the war to the ICC “due to growing worry over the latest escalation of violence, particularly against civilian targets."

Mexico cited "numerous reports from the United Nations that detail many incidents that could constitute crimes under the ICC's jurisdiction."

Speaking to reporters, Chile's Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren said his nation was "interested in supporting the investigation into any possible war crime" wherever they might occur.

The Hague-based court opened an investigation into Israel for possible war crimes in the occupied Palestinian territories in 2021.

ICC prosecutor Karim Khan said in November that the investigation now "extends to the escalation of hostilities and violence” since October 7, 2023.

Israel is not a member of the ICC, but Palestine was allowed to join in 2015 and has since called for an investigation into Israeli crimes.

UN expert underscores multiple instances of breach of the international law by the Israeli regime, which has brought Gaza under a genocidal war.

Mexico said it was also closely following the genocide case filed by South Africa against the occupying regime at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its ongoing war in the besieged strip. Hearings in the case began last week.

According to South Africa’s application, Israel's actions in Gaza were "genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group."

Belgium urged to intervene in ICJ case against Israel

Belgian international law professors urged their country to intervene in the genocide case filed against Israel at the ICJ.

In an open letter published in De Morgen newspaper, the 19 professors said Belgium as one of the states that have ratified the Genocide Convention is obliged to act to prevent the crime.

They said Belgium could fulfill that obligation by applying to the Court of Justice.

The lawyers stressed that Belgium’s intervention before the Hague-based court delivers its judgment would help interpret the current situation in Gaza as an act of “genocide”, denounce the destruction of humanitarian infrastructure, and prevent such acts in the future.

According to the letter, such a move would also address the Israeli regime’s policy of not seeing Palestinians as humans.

Belgian Deputy Prime Minister, Petra De Sutter, had also made a similar call and urged her country not to remain silent against Israel’s threat of genocide in Gaza and to support the lawsuit filed by South Africa.

“Belgium cannot just watch from the sidelines the endless suffering of the people in Gaza. We must act against the threat of genocide. I want Belgium to follow South Africa’s lead and take action at the International Court of Justice. I will make this proposal to the Belgian government,” De Sutter said on X on January 9.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli regime's decades-long campaign of bloodletting and devastation against Palestinians.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 24,620 Palestinians and injured more than 61,830 others.

Thousands more are also missing and presumed dead under the rubble in Gaza, which is under “complete siege” by Israel.

EU lawmakers call for ‘permanent ceasefire’ in Gaza

Jan 18, 2024

TEHRAN, Jan. 18 (MNA) – After more than three months of Israeli genocide in Gaza and the death of over 24,000 Palestinians, the European Parliament has finally issued a resolution in support of a “permanent ceasefire” in the besieged enclave.

The non-binding resolution was approved on Thursday with 312 votes in favor, 131 against, and 32 abstentions.

While the resolution repeats the West’s hostile stance toward the Palestinian Resistance, it nevertheless strongly condemns Israel's disproportionate military response to the October 7 al-Aqsa Storm Operation.

European lawmakers also expressed concern about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and emphasized the urgent need for full and unimpeded access to humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

They called for a commitment from all parties to the conflict to provide humanitarian assistance in accordance with international human rights laws.

Furthermore, the resolution addresses the necessity of ending the occupation of Palestinian territories and explicitly states that Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law.

Protesters stage sit-ins at Dutch train stations in solidarity with Palestine

Abdullah Aşıran

19.01.2024

Protesters staged sit-in demonstrations Thursday at major train stations across the Netherlands in solidarity with Palestine, expressing their support for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.

Demonstrators gathered at the central train station in the city of Utrecht carrying Palestinian flags and holding signs that said "Stop bombing children and hospitals," "Justice for Palestine" and "Ceasefire now."

They expressed their discontent with the Dutch government, accusing it of endorsing Israel's actions in the region.

Chanting slogans such as "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," "Gaza don't cry, Palestine will never die," and "Shame on the Netherlands, your hands are bloody," they sought to raise awareness about the situation in Gaza and garner public attention.

Following the sit-in, they briefly marched in front of the municipal building before concluding the demonstration.

One of the organizers, Leonie van Bruggen, told Anadolu that the sit-in protests aimed to call for a cease-fire and inform the public about the events unfolding in Gaza.

"Initially, the situation was reflected in the media, especially from the Israeli perspective. Now there is increasing attention to the situation in Palestine, and more people are joining this movement."

Expressing determination, van Bruggen said the protests would continue until tangible changes occurred.

She called for the Dutch government to actively pursue a cease-fire and take a more critical stance on the conflict.

Gus Ootjers, who comes from a Jewish background, joined the protests, highlighting the distressing nature of the events in Gaza.

Ootjers emphasized that the suffering in the region had persisted for over a century and needed to come to an end.

"The Netherlands is watching, Germany is watching, the US is watching. People can prevent our government from providing weapons and support, and only together can we stop this," he said, underscoring the role of Western countries in influencing Israel's actions.

Israel has pounded the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on Oct. 7, which Tel Aviv says killed nearly 1,200 people.

At least 24,620 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and 61,830 injured, according to Palestinian health authorities.

The Israeli offensive has left 85% of the Gaza Strip’s population internally displaced amid acute shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure was damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

PHC issues detailed judgement: ‘Accused can’t be arrested multiple times in different cases’

January 19, 2024

Amjad Safi

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Thursday said that a one-time arrest of a citizen would be considered arrest in all the cases registered against an accused during the same period.

This was declared in the detailed judgment issued by PHC) in the writ petition filed by National Assembly former speaker Asad Qaiser and former MNA Mujahid Ali Khan, both affiliated to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

PHC Chief Justice Muhammad Ibrahim Khan and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim had heard the writ filed by the PTI arrested leaders. The verdict was reserved on December 19, last year.

Shabbir Hussain Gigyani Advocate and Barrister Aamirullah Chamkani were appointed to assist the court.

Shabbir Hussain Gigyani, the amicus curiae, had told the court that the Constitution was blatantly violated after the May 9 incidents. He had said the police had the authority to make arrests but the force could not be granted unbridled power in this regard. Gigyani contended arresting one accused repeatedly was an illegal practice.

Barrister Aamirullah Chamkani had contended that as per the police rules, the police will have to show the arrest in every case but a time-frame was a legal requirement for that.

The counsels for the PTI had contended in the petition that the police were harassing the party leaders.

They were arrested in another case once they secured bail in one case which, the PTI lawyers had said, was a violation of the basic human rights.

The advocate general had argued that if an accused was wanted in several cases in a police station, his one-time arrest would be considered arrest in all cases.

However, his arrest was a legal requirement if there was a case or cases lodged against him at another police station or by another department, he had argued.

Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim authored the detailed judgment which spanned 28 pages and was issued the previous day.

It stated the court could intervene to ensure that the constitutional rights whenever freedom and basic rights of a citizen were usurped.

The judgement said the Supreme Court of Pakistan had set the principles in such cases that the arrest of an accused at the same time would be considered the arrest in all the cases registered against him.

The court directed the government to provide the details of registered cases and pending inquiries against the petitioner. The judge directed the PHC registrar to send the judgment to all sessions judges.

Toshakhana, £190m cases: IHC seeks NAB’s reply to Imran’s pleas against jail trial

January 19, 2024

Awais Yousafzai

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday issued a notice to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and secretary interior on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s pleas challenging his jail trial in the references pertaining to Toshakhana gift and £190 million embezzlement, Geo News reported.

Declaring the pleas admissible, the IHC has sought a reply from the NAB and secretary by January 22 (Monday). The high court directed to fix the case for hearing on Monday before the available bench.

IHC Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb and Justice Arbab Tahir conducted the hearing of the petitions.

The PTI founder’s lawyer, Latif Khosa said the National Accountability Court (NAB) filed the Toshakhana case in the accountability court on November 20 and the prison trial notification was issued a month prior to the filing of the reference.

“Hearing into the Toshakhana reference has been being held daily since December 23, 2023. The relevant court’s judge has to begin the jail trial process as per the law and this court has issued an order regarding implementation of that process,” he said.

Justice Miangul Hassan asked why he challenged the notification so late as it was issued in November and he filed a plea against the notification in January.

The PTI founder’s lawyer replied they came to know about the reference after a summon was issued to his client.

Justice Miangul Miangul said they only had to ensure that the case’s process was right. It did not matter for them if the trial was held in the court or jail, he said.

Khosa said there was no suggestion from the concerned judge and he did not direct to hold prison trial for security reasons. The IHC judge said a short order in this regard was already available. It was a judicial order that should have been seen, he added.

Khosa asked if the federal government was positive that reference would be lodged, while it could have been dropped too.

On this occasion, Imran Khan challenged the appointment of the accountability judge as well.

Khosa said the judge was appointed on deputation and his retirement was closer. The judge was holding hearing on a daily basis to settle the trial, he said.

The lawyer said only the former prime minister’s cases were being expedited, while there was no progress on the rest of the cases.

Justice Miangul said Toshakhana was a safe of the government and the federal cabinet secretary was its keeper. The cabinet secretary had opened Toshakhana’s door for all, he said.

He said the articles kept in Toshakhana were put on sale, from 20% to 50% off. An order would be passed regarding this issue, he said adding that the gifts were state properties and they should remain with it.

The IHC judge said the politicians should better start returning the gifts to the state.

On January 9, an accountability court had indicted Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana reference filed against them by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

The decision was announced during a hearing in Adiala jail — where the former prime minister is currently incarcerated in the case.

A five-member special prosecution team of the anti-graft watchdog had perused the reference against the duo.

Accountability court Judge Muhammad Bashir had conducted the hearing of Toshakhana and £190 million cases in the prison.

BNP-M chief laments leaders’ silence over Baloch missing persons protest

January 19, 2024

QUETTA: BNP-M President Sardar Akhtar Mengal has asserted that the people of Balochistan cannot forget the oppressive period of Ayub Khan’s dictatorship and the military operation during the PPP government.

Addressing a public gathering in Surab on Thursday, he emphasised that those who remained silent on matters concerning the dignity and honour of the Baloch nation should not seek their votes. “Despite claims, there is no tangible progress in Surab, except for changes in flags and election symbols,” he said.

Mr Mengal mentioned that if those advocating for accountability ever speak up in favour of the oppressed Baloch nation in the assemblies, the Baloch people would appreciate it.

“We have fulfilled the duty of protecting this land even while facing all the sufferings and retributions in every age,” he said, adding that BNP-M continued to be recognised as the influential and powerful voice representing Balochistan and its people in the assemblies.

“On the contrary, the political leaders here, who do not get tired of calling themselves heirs of the regions and the province, have been enjoying power and privileges by becoming allies of the dictators in all eras and the forces involved in the exploitation of the province,” he said.

Mr Mengal said the leaders who don’t have the time or courage to support those in the Baloch Missing Persons March are criticising the BNP-M’s political role.

He said only time and history will reveal who truly fought for Balochistan and who deceived the nation for personal gain. He urged people not to be fooled by their dishonest politics.

He highlighted that on Feb 8, by voting for the BNP-M’s nominated candidates, people can use their power to protect the land and rights of the oppressed.

Sarawak plans to build six minarets at state mosque, says premier

18 Jan 2024

KUCHING, Jan 18 — The state government plans to construct six minarets at the State Mosque in Kuching, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

He said the minarets, similar to those at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, would be added to the State Mosque, also known as Jamek Mosque, located in the heart of the state’s administrative centre.

China urges end of ‘harassment’ of vessels in Red Sea

19 Jan 2024

BEIJING, Jan 19 — China called for an end to “harassment” of civilian vessels in the Red Sea today after attacks on ships by Houthi rebels in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Houthi aggression against vessels in and around the Red Sea has led to retaliatory strikes in Yemen by US and British forces.

Some shipping firms are avoiding the crucial trade artery, causing delays along international trade routes.

And Beijing today emphasised the area was an “important international trade route for goods and energy”.

“We call for an end to the harassment of civilian vessels, in order to maintain the smooth flow of global production and supply chains and the international trade order,” foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said.

In an interview published today, a senior Houthi official promised safe passage for Russian and Chinese vessels through the Red Sea.

Mohammed al-Bukhaiti said the waters around Yemen were safe so long as vessels were not linked to certain countries, particularly Israel.

That followed similar calls by Beijing’s Commerce Ministry on those in the region to “restore and ensure the safety of waterways in the Red Sea”.

“It is hoped that the relevant parties will proceed from the overall interests of regional security and stability as well as the common interests of the international community,” ministry spokesman He Yadong said yesterday, according to state news agency Xinhua.

The Houthis claimed early today another attack on a US ship after the United States launched fresh strikes on rebel targets the day before.

The group has launched numerous attacks in the vital shipping lanes around Yemen since the war in Gaza erupted on October 7 with Hamas’s bloody attack on Israel.

And Beijing today reiterated that the Red Sea tensions were linked to the war between Israel and Hamas.

“The top priority is to quell the war in Gaza as soon as possible to prevent the conflict from further expanding or even getting out of control,” Mao said. — AFP

Indonesia dispatches naval hospital ship with humanitarian aid for Gaza

January 18, 2024

JAKARTA: The Indonesian government dispatched on Thursday its naval hospital ship to the waters near Gaza as part of its humanitarian assistance in the wake of Israeli attacks on the Palestinian enclave.

Indonesia, which has long been a staunch supporter of Palestine, dispatched two planes to send humanitarian aid to Gaza in November, with medicine, food, hygiene kit, blankets, mattresses and medical equipment for hospitals.

The third consignment weighing 220 tonnes is transported by the Indonesian Navy’s hospital ship, the KRI Radjiman Wedyodiningrat-992, which departed the Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta for the El-Arish Port in Egypt on Thursday.

“All of you today will depart for a humanitarian mission to deliver aid for our brothers and sisters in Palestine, in Gaza, who are going through a great tragedy, immense suffering, under relentless attacks that go beyond the limits of humanity and in neglect of international law,” Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto said, addressing the ship’s personnel ahead of their departure.

“We are not a country involved in the war, but we have solidarity and humanitarian responsibility toward our brothers in Palestine.”

The government, which originally planned to deploy the ship to provide health services for the people of Gaza, said it is still negotiating with Egyptian officials for authorization to do so.

“We are still preparing everything, what we are doing is sending humanitarian aid (first),” Subianto said.

Israel’s daily bombardment of the Palestinian enclave since October has killed more than 24,000 people and destroyed or damaged more than 70 percent of homes, while international rights groups are accusing Israel of using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare in Gaza.

The Indonesian Navy said in a statement that the third batch of assistance also included essentials for babies and other staples.

“This mission will take the route of Jakarta-Belawan-El-Arish-Jeddah-Batam before it comes back to Jakarta. The journey will take a total time of about 50 days on the sea to return to our homeland,” the Indonesian Navy said.

“This aid shipment will be headed toward El-Arish Port in Egypt, which will later be distributed to the victims in Gaza by relevant authorities, such as the Egypt Red Crescent.”

Kenyan Self-Proclaimed Pastor Charged With Murder After Discovery Of Mass Graves

18 January 2024

A court in Kenya has charged the self-proclaimed pastor Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and 94 other suspects with murder, torture and terrorism in connection with the death of more than 400 of his followers whose bodies were found in mass graves.

The head of the Good News International Church, Mackenzie purportedly instructed his followers to deprive themselves and their children of sustenance, so that they could “reach heaven and meet Jesus prior to the end of the world.”

The court has ordered Mackenzie and 30 others to undergo mental health tests.

According to documents from the Mombasa court, the priest was also charged on Thursday with “organized criminal activity” and “subjecting a child to torture.”

The priest was arrested in April, after months of digging across tens of thousands of acres of Shakahola forest in the remote southeast led to the discovery of 429 bodies.

The former taxi driver’s trial had been delayed due to the challenging process of finding, excavating, and conducting autopsies on numerous human remains. The autopsies revealed that the majority of the total victims had died of hunger.

Out of the bodies exhumed 191 were children, the majority of whose autopsy reports showed they were strangled, beaten or suffocated.

Some of Mackenzie’s disciples were saved – malnourished – when they were found from the woods.

The people who had witnessed Mackenzie’s activities said he had planned the mass fasting, which were ordered last year in January, in three phases: first children, then women and young men, and finally the remaining men, according to what they told Reuters.

His former disciples said he prohibited them from enrolling their children in educational institutions and seeking medical assistance at hospitals, as he labeled these establishments “Satanic.”

Mackenzie has argued that he is not responsible for the deaths as he closed his church in 2019.

Earlier in 2019, he was also accused of involvement in the death of two children who were believed to have been starved, suffocated and then buried in a shallow grave in Shakahola.

Kenya, a predominantly Christian country, has faced challenges in effectively regulating deceitful churches and cults involved in criminal activities.

According to government figures, there are more than 4,000 churches registered in the East African country of 53 million people.

Islamic group accuses Tinubu of operating a “Christian-Christian” government

 Jerry Wright-Ukwu

January 18, 2024

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of operating a “Christian-Christian” government.

According to the group, the president has also refused to select the best skilled and talented Muslims across the country for appointments.

The Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, made the comment at the just concluded national conference of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) at the National Mosque, Abuja, with the theme, “Matters arising from 2023 elections and associated socio-economic challenges.”

Akintola questioned why Tinubu hasn’t been picking the Muslims on political appointments but instead picks the Christians.

He said: “What we observe is that the government is operating a Christian-Christian government, and we have made it known to the government. The signs are very clear. Even CAN came out to congratulate Tinubu for giving them juicy appointments.

“We disagree with Tinubu on the issue of appointments, if the president can hold this policy of saying is giving the best talent, the best skilled and couldn’t find those hands amongst the Muslims then it is an insult to the Muslims.

“Somebody found Oloyede, Pantami. Are there not Muslims in the South West and they have been complaining because they weren’t given appointments. Many of them are also politicians who struggled for Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The president didn’t spread his nets to Muslim constituencies, Muslim areas. Why is it that he only sees skilled Christians and doesn’t see talented Muslims that is a minus for any government because it means you have been training only the Christians?

“What have you been doing with the Muslims? These are people who are denied education, particularly in the South West. We suffered before we could gain admission, but we are saying the president is not searching well enough. Did Bola Tinubu consult the Supreme Council for skilled Muslims?”

Speaking on the economy, Akintola said: “He made promises, but we do not see any results. There is a free fall in Naira; the masses are suffering. If in 6 months there is no result, I think we should be asking questions so that the government can review it.”

Shari’a court revokes bail, orders re-arrest of embattled Imam, Dusten Tanshi

January 18, 2024

The Upper Shari’a Court in Bauchi has again issued an arrest warrant for Chief Imam, Idris Abdul’azeez Dutsen Tanshi, after he failed to appear in court on January 17, 2023.

Presiding Judge, Malam Hussaini A. Turaki disagreed with the defense counsel’s suggestion to consider the Court of Appeal’s order in Jos.

DAILY POST reports that Abdul’aziz is standing trial before the court bordering on an alleged incitement of public disturbance of peace and blasphemy following a petition against him to the police.

It was alleged that the Imam, in one of his Ramadan Tafsir sessions, passed blasphemous comments against Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) and some notable Dariqa clerics.

However, after hearing the arguments from both counsels, the presiding judge insisted that the accused person must appear in court despite the bail granted earlier since it was a criminal case.

The counsel to the plaintiff, UB Umar, explained that despite multiple attempts to summon the defendant, including public announcements and substitute service, he refused to appear.

On the defense side, Ahmad M Umar insisted that the court should respect the Court of Appeal’s previous order as he highlighted errors in the revocation of bail.

Consequently, the case was adjourned until January 24, 2024, for the continuation of the hearing with the accused person in court.

An arrest warrant was also issued in that regard.

3 killed and 77 injured in a massive blast in southern Nigeria

January 19, 2024

Two people died and 77 others were injured after a massive blast rocked more than a dozen buildings in one of Nigeria's largest cities Tuesday night, the governor said Wednesday, as rescue workers dug through the rubble in search of those feared trapped.

Residents in the southwestern state of Oyo's densely populated Ibadan city heard a loud blast at about 7:45 p.m., causing panic as many fled their homes. By Wednesday morning, security forces cordoned off the area while medical personnel and ambulances were on standby as rescue efforts intensified.

Preliminary investigations showed the blast was caused by explosives stored for use in illegal mining operations, Oyo Gov. Seyi Makinde told reporters after visiting the site in the Bodija area of Ibadan.

"We have already deployed first responders and all relevant agencies within Oyo state to carry out comprehensive search and rescue operations," Makinde said, describing the damage as "devastating."

Illegal mining in mineral-rich Nigeria is common and has been a major concern for authorities. However, it is mostly done in remote areas where arrests are difficult and where safety procedures are rarely followed.

It was not immediately clear who stored the explosives, and no arrest has been announced. "The investigations are ongoing (and) all those found culpable for this will be brought to book," Gov. Makinde said.

Most of the 77 injured were already discharged, the governor said, promising to cover the medical bills of others still being admitted and to provide temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected.

Assaf bin Salem Abu Thuneen, a member of the Saudi Shoura Council and the Arab Parliament, said the committee thanked countries for providing humanitarian aid in support of the Palestinians, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The committee also highly praised Saudi Arabia’s efforts, led by King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in supporting the Palestinian cause and providing humanitarian and relief assistance to its people.

In addition, the body commended the Kingdom’s political support for Palestine in all international forums.

Abu Thuneen thanked South Africa for its stance in filing a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice for its assault on the Palestinian people in Gaza and the occupied territories.

He added that the Arab Parliament planned to send messages to the parliaments of countries that had supported the Israeli campaign to inform them of its condemnation, and tell them that they had become complicit in Israel’s assaults and crimes against the Palestinian people.

Abu Thuneen said that participants at the meeting had agreed to change the term “occupation force” to “occupying Israeli entity” in official communications and statements issued by the Arab Parliament.

Saudi Arabia: Prophet’s Mosque visitors surge to 5.8m in one week

  January 19, 2024

Cairo: As many as 5.8 million Muslims worshipped at the Prophet’s Mosque, Islam’s second holiest site, in the Saudi city of Medina in one week that coincided with a school break in the kingdom, official figures showed.

The General Authority for Care of the Prophet’s Mosque said the cited period ran from the 28th of the lunar Islamic months of Juamad II and the fourth of Rajab.

The figures included 130,401 male worshippers and 115,551 females, who visited Al Rawda Al Sharifa, where the tomb of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) is located at the mosque, according to separate visit timings allotted for males and females.

During the same week, some 123,200 packs of Zamzam water and 99,832 fast-breaking meals were distributed to the faithful in designated areas at the mosque, according to the state agency.

Moreover, exhibitions in the mosque annexe received 2,492 visitors eager to get acquainted with phases of the site’s expansions over the years.

After performing Umrah or minor pilgrimage at the Grand Mosque, Islam’s holiest site, in Mecca, many pilgrims would flock to Medina to offer prayers at the Prophet’s Mosque and visit other Islamic landmarks in the city.

Saudi Arabia expects around 10 million Muslims from abroad to perform Umrah during the current season that began more than six months ago.

Saudi authorities in charge of the Prophet’s Mosque mobilised efforts to receive worshippers from across the kingdom during the school holiday that ended earlier this week.

The General Authority for Care of the Two Holy Mosques said it had intensified services including disinfection and cleaning works, management of crowds entering and exiting the mosque, and assistance to the physically challenged and elderly visitors.

Yemen targets another US ship in fresh pro-Palestinian strike

19 January 2024

Yemen's Armed Forces announce conducting a fresh missile strike against another American ship in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, who have come under a genocidal US-backed war by the Israeli regime.

In a statement on Thursday, the forces reported "targeting American ship, Chem Ranger, in the Gulf of Aden with appropriate naval missiles, resulting in a direct hit."

Over the past month, the forces and Yemen's Ansarullah popular resistance movement have staged many such strikes against Israeli vessels or those bound for the occupied Palestinian territories' ports.

The operations have been described as a response to the October 7-present war that the Israeli regime has been waging against Gaza following an operation carried out by the Palestinian territory's resistance movements.

At least 24,620 Palestinians, around 70 percent of whom are women, children, and adolescents, have been killed in the brutal onslaught so far.

UN expert underscores multiple instances of breach of the international law by the Israeli regime, which has brought Gaza under a genocidal war.

The United States and the UK have also conducted several missile attacks against Yemeni targets in response to the Yemeni strikes.

The US military conducts a new missile strike on Yemen, targeting a radar site in the capital Sana’a.

The statement by the Yemeni Armed Forces affirmed that "a response to the US-UK aggression is inevitable, and any new attack will not go unanswered."

Ansarullah leader Abdel Malek al-Houthi said the attacks would “also include American and British ships.”

It, meanwhile, declared, "We continue to implement our defensive and offensive measures within the legitimate right to defend Yemen, and supporting and backing our steadfast brothers in Gaza."

Yemen’s Houthis say they targeted US ship in Gulf of Aden

Aziz Ahmadi, Mehmet Nuri Uçar

19.01.2024

Yemen’s Houthi group said Thursday that they struck a US vessel in the Gulf of Aden.

Speaking to Al-Masirah television, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said the attack was in response to US and UK aggression against Yemen and also to aid the Palestinian people.

Sarea said the assault was carried out using cruise missiles.

Earlier, the US announced that it destroyed two Houthi anti-ship missiles in the region.

“As part of ongoing multi-national efforts to protect freedom of navigation and prevent attacks on maritime vessels in the Red Sea, on Jan. 18 U.S. Central Command forces conducted strikes on two Houthi anti-ship missiles that were aimed into the Southern Red Sea and were prepared to launch,” said the United States Central Command (CENTCOM).

It said US forces determined that the missiles were an imminent threat to merchant vessels and US Navy ships in the region.

“U.S. forces subsequently struck and destroyed the missiles in self-defense,” it added.

The Houthis said their attacks aim to pressure Israel to halt its deadly war on the Gaza Strip, which has killed at least 24,620 people and injured 61,830 others since an Oct. 7 cross-border offensive by the Palestinian group Hamas.

Israel says around 1,200 people were killed in the Hamas attack and hundreds more were taken back to Gaza as hostages.

The US and UK have launched airstrikes on Houthi targets for one week in retaliation for the attacks, which have created fears of a new bout of inflation and supply chain disruption.

The Red Sea is one of the world's most frequently used sea routes for oil and fuel shipments. It is used to transit between Egypt's Suez Canal and the Gulf of Aden, allowing ships to avoid the much costlier and longer route across the southern coast of Africa.
