Democrats Rep. Outraged by Trump's 'Muslim Ban on
Steroids', He Would Prefer The U.S. Take In Refugees From Gaza
President-elect Joe Biden has vowed to overturn the
so-called Muslim ban on 'day one' of his administration [File: Yuri

-----
04-11- 2023
Democrats were calling for Donald Trump's impeachment
before he was even inaugurated — that's how much of a honeymoon period he got.
If memory serves, before "Russian collusion" completely took over the
narrative, one of Trump's first "scandals" as president was his
"Muslim travel ban." Actually, it was a ban from travel from countries
that were known terrorist hot spots — and designated as such by the Obama
administration. Plenty of Muslim countries weren't on the list but never mind
that fact.
Rep. Ted Lieu has read a disturbing report in The
Daily Beast about a bill to prevent Palestinians from entering the United
States. Lieu would probably prefer the U.S. take in refugees from Gaza.
This repugnant bill is Trump’s Muslim Ban on steroids.
It wrongfully holds an entire class of people accountable for the actions of a
foreign terrorist group. This unAmerican thinking led to the tragic internment
of people of Japanese ancestry. We shouldn’t make the same mistake.
https://t.co/RsAXWoRgUN
Were Egypt or Indonesia on that list of countries? No.
Well it wasn't much of a Muslim ban was it? So you're just making stuff up as
usual. Facts aren't on your side so you resort to lies.
No, it's actually common sense. We don't need Hamas
beheading babies here. You'd probably like it as a reason to give more money to
defense contractors to whom all of you dipshits are beholden.
It is not repugnant to protect Americans from
potential harm. It is not un-American at all, but quite the opposite. People
who come from places where life is not regarded as sacred do not belong in the
USA.
Whenever I wonder how Congress has such a low approval
rating, all I have to do is think of Ted. They just don't come any more useless
than this one.
Is Lieu at all concerned with the crisis at the
southern border? He seems perfectly happy with unvetted migrants from all over
the world just walking in and asking for asylum.

Sufi Samvad Maha Abhiyan: BJP’s ‘Sufi’ Outreach To
Muslims, Olive Branch Or Division Of Votes?
Religious leaders at the
‘Sufi Samvad Maha Abhiyan’ at the headquarters of the Bharatiya Janata Party in
Lucknow. | Special Arrangement
------
Zafar Aafaq
05-11-2023
Sufi Dil Bahar Gulsheri is the 66-year-old caretaker
of a Dargah in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district. As shrines go, it is a
relatively young one – not even 20 years old. But the Dargah of Khwaja Muhammad
Gulsher Hasan Shah has a sizeable following in the region, with close to 5,000
pilgrims visiting it every year.
Last month, Gulsheri was invited by the Bharatiya
Janata Party to take part in an outreach programme called the Sufi Samvad Maha
Abhiyan at the party’s Lucknow headquarters.
Around 400 people associated with Dargahs across the
state attended the event, said party leader Dr Ehteshamul Huda, who is leading
the campaign. These included caretakers or associates of major dargahs in
Hapur, Sambhal and Bulandshahr districts in Uttar Pradesh – as well as a
550-year-old shrine in Amroha district.
These caretakers of the Sufi shrines were invited to
take the party’s message to the Muslim community, in the run-up to the 2024
general elections, said BJP leaders.
A gathering of caretakers of several dargahs at the
Bharatiya Janata party office in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Credit: Special
arrangement.
The convention was addressed by the president of the
BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit, Bhupinder Singh Chaudhary. “He told the gathering
that the BJP governments at the Centre and the state were working for everyone,
including minorities, without any discrimination,” Gulsheri said. “He told us,
‘We want you to tell Muslims that we have nothing against them and we want them
to join the party.’”
The initiative was launched earlier this year in March
as part of the party’s strategy for the 2024 elections. According to a report
in PTI, the campaign aims to focus on the Muslim-dominated districts of Uttar
Pradesh, West Bengal, Kerala and Telangana.
The BJP’s Hindutva nationalist politics has often been
criticised for alienating and othering Muslims, but the party has, in recent
months, tried to reach out to the community. Last year, Prime Minister Narendra
Modi called on party workers to seek the support of marginalised sections
within the community, especially the Pasmanda Muslims. In Uttar Pradesh, the
BJP has announced a set of ‘snehyatras’ in regions dominated by the Pasmanda
Muslims.
While the BJP’s overtures to the Pasmanda Muslims have
focussed on the backward sections of the community, a campaign that rides on
the goodwill of Sufi shrines does not target any specific group of Indian
Muslims.
Sufi shrines across the country are revered by vast
and diverse sections of Muslims – and even members of other religions. But,
broadly, those who pray at dargahs are followers of the Barelvi school of
thought in Islam – a group of Sunni Muslims that emerged in 19th century South
Asia and championed traditional Sufi mystic practices.
Yasir Jilani, the media coordinator of the campaign,
said the caretakers of the dargah were chosen as they follow Sufism, which he
said was “more open and inclusive.” “These people are not hardliners. Their
ideology of Sufism matches with the policy of Prime Minister Modi’s
‘sabkasaathsabkavikas’,” he added.
“The RSS has a certain notion of what a good Muslim
is,” said Khalid Anis Ansari, professor of sociology at Azim Premji University,
referring to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological parent of the
BJP. He argued that the ‘Sufi Samvad’ is inspired by those biases. “In their
discourse, there is a strong anxiety about monotheistic Abrahamic traditions
and they feel that the Sufis are a better mix of pagan and Abrahamic
traditions, and more tolerant and closer to ‘native’ [Hindu] culture.”
What is common to both the feelers to Pasmanda Muslims
and the Sufi outreach, say observers, is the BJP’s attempt to gain electorally
from a division of the Muslim vote.
BJP leaders from its minority wing agreed that the
Muslims have largely been averse to the party but blamed it on “propaganda” by
opposition parties.
“There are misconceptions. People are not aware about
the benefits they have got due to schemes started by the Modi government,” said
Kunwar Basit Ali, the state president of the BJP minority unit in Uttar
Pradesh.
He argued that such initiatives can bring some Muslims
into the BJP fold. As proof, he pointed to the party’s success in Muslim-majority
pockets in the recent panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh. “It was the first
time that 72 Muslims won on a BJP ticket,” Ali said. “We won Rampur and
Azamgarh, where Muslims constitute around 50% of the population.”
Haider Abbas, the national president of All India Shia
Muslim Mahasabha, which is affiliated to the BJP, said the Sufi Samvad campaign
was designed to clear “misconceptions” ahead of the 2024 general elections.
But they pointed out that BJP leaders’ anti-Muslim
speeches makes their work difficult. “We work hard to remove the anti-Muslim
stain on the party but hate speeches damage our case,” said Faisal Faridi, who
has been associated with the BJP for the last eight years. He is also a part of
the family that takes care of the Amroha shrine.
Gulsheri, however, minced no words in criticising the
party’s policy towards Muslims. “I do not like the BJP and have never voted for
them,” he said. “They chant the slogan of ‘sabkasaathsabkavishwas’ but do not
act upon it.”
“They [BJP leaders] should douse the fire of hatred
that they have themselves lit in the name of Hindu-Muslim,” Gulsheri said. “If
you visit any government office, the behaviour of officials towards Muslim men
with a beard and skullcap is discriminatory. They do not see me as Sufi. They
see me as a Mullah. This has to change.”
Sufi Mian Barkat Niyazi, the 32- year-old deputy
caretaker of a shrine near Kanpur, said while the BJP has its electoral
benefits in mind, he would not ask his followers to vote for the party. “That
is not our job. People have the right to vote as per their own choice,” he
said.
Leaders of the Sufi shrines, who have been associated
with the BJP for the last many years, denied the charge that the party was
using them to whitewash its anti-Muslim image. “All parties have used dargahs
as platforms,” said Syed Afshan Chisti, the national convenor of the campaign,
who hails from Ajmer in Rajasthan. “If we stay away from politics, then who
will address the issues of dargahs, their caretakers and followers? We are not
blind to worldly needs.”
Critics and political observers, however, say that the
BJP’s overtures are only a ruse to divide the Muslim vote and exploit the fault
lines in the community.
“It is a political game being played by the BJP to
divide Muslims,” said Maulana Tauqeer Raza, one of the most prominent leaders
of the Barelvi sect, who fought the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections on a
Congress ticket.
“The BJP wants to show that it is an inclusive party,
to camouflage its exclusivist ideology,” said Mirza Asmer Beg, professor of
political science at Aligarh Muslim university. “But the underlying purpose,”
he added, “is to exploit the division between Barelvi and Deobandi Muslims, a
major religious fault line in North India.”
The Barelvis differ from the Deobandis in believing
that Prophet Muhammad can be requested to intercede in daily, worldly needs of
worshippers, and that an “aulia” can act as an intermediary between god and
humans, explained Obaidullah Fahad, professor of Islamic studies at Aligarh
Muslim University.
Historically, political parties in India did not exploit
such differences because it was not in their electoral interest, said Beg. “The
Congress received Muslim support enmasse since independence and they ensured
this fault line does not come to the fore politically,” he added.
Ansari, the sociology professor, agreed. “If the BJP
is able to exploit the differences within Muslims and corner 2% to 3% votes in
a closely contested election, that might make a difference in 20-25 Lok Sabha
seats.”

Thousands Pro-Palestinian March In Europe And Iran,
Call For "Barbary To Stop" In Gaza
Many protesters waved
Palestinian flags and held placards calling for an immediate ceasefire.
------
November 05, 2023
London: Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters
rallied in London, Paris and Berlin on Saturday calling for a ceasefire in Gaza
after Iranians took to the streets against the United States and Israel.
Amid ongoing bombardments by Israel after the deadly
Hamas attack on its territory last month killed 1,400 people, the British
capital saw a large turnout in support of Palestinians for the fourth consecutive
week.
Israel's bombing campaign since the October attack by
Hamas has killed nearly 9,500 people, mostly women and children, according to
the Hamas-run health ministry in the Gaza Strip.
"We came here to support the ceasefire," she
said. "We spend the whole week consuming the news and this is very
draining, so this is our only form of outlet."
Pro-Palestinian protests also took place in cities
across the United Kingdom on Saturday, including in Sheffield, Manchester and
Glasgow.

US flying drones over Gaza: All you need to know about
the MQ-9 Reaper
Nov 4, 2023
NEW DELHI: The US recently confirmed for the first
time that it has been flying unarmed surveillance drones over Gaza in
"support of hostage recovery efforts". Around 240 people, including
10 US citizens, were abducted and taken to Gaza by Hamas fighters during the
surprise attack on October 7.
"These UAV flights began after the October 7
attack by Hamas on Israel," Pentagon spokesman Brig Gen Pat Ryder said in
a brief statement on Friday.
The acknowledgement comes after reporters spotted
unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) on flight-tracking websites. "The US is
conducting unarmed UAV flights over Gaza, as well as providing advice and
assistance to support our Israeli partner as they work on their hostage
recovery efforts," said Ryder.
According to reports, at least six drones are being
used for surveillance and their flight paths show they have focused mainly on
southern Gaza.

Doors to work permits for H-1B spouses remain open, as
US Supreme Court refuses to hear challenge against this policy
Nov 4, 2023
The US Supreme Court, has recently refused to review a
favourable decision of a lower court, which had upheld the H-4 Employment
Authorisation Documentation (EAD) rule. This means that the EAD rule continues
to stay and the Damocles sword no longer hangs on the heads of spouses of H-1B
workers, a significant number of whom are Indians.
It is estimated that nearly a lakh Indian spouses
(largely women) hold an EAD, which enables them to work or be self-employed.
Official statistics date back to December 2017, according to which 84,360
Indian spouses held an EAD (this was 93% of the total EADs issued).
This rule was introduced by the Obama administration
in 2015 to mitigate the problems faced by certain sections of immigrants (such
as the Indian diaspora) who faced backlogs running into several decades to
obtain an employment based green card.
Under the EAD rule, in those cases where the H-1B visa
recipient is on track for a green card, or has got an extension beyond the
permitted six years, the spouse holding an H-4 visa can apply for employment
authorisation.

BJP will act against 'love jihad', cow smuggling if
voted to power in Chhattisgarh: Yogi Adityanath
05.11.2
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said
action will be taken against those spreading chaos in the name of "love
jihad" and cow smuggling in Chhattisgarh, if the Bharatiya Janata Party
comes to power in the state.
Addressing a rally in Kawardha assembly seat of
poll-bound Chhattisgarh on Saturday, Adityanath termed the Congress as a
"problem for the country, society and public".
Referring to the victory of the Congress in the 2018
polls in Chhattisgarh as a "mistake", he claimed Ram Navami
processions were banned, while a worker opposing "love jihad" was
brutally murdered.
"There is a double engine government of Bharatiya
Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh. Love jihad has been completely banned there. A
law has been made in this connection and against conversion. No one can convert
illegally. If anyone does such an act, then he or she will have to face the
consequences," he said.

UK urges Iran to use influence to avert escalation in
Israel-Hamas conflict
Patrick Wintour
4 Nov 2023
The UK foreign secretary, James Cleverly, in a rare
phone call with his Iranian counterpart, has underlined western warnings that
Tehran must use its influence with other groups in the Middle East to prevent
escalation in the Gaza conflict.
It is not clear from the readouts given by either side
whether Cleverly spelled out any consequences to Iran if it was deemed to be
actively stoking a wider war, or if he provided any intelligence to show that
the west knew the depth of Iran’s involvement.
The Iranian foreign minister, Hossein
Amir-Abdollahian, rejected Cleverly’s message by repeating the longstanding
line that Iran does not control militant groups in the Palestinian territories,
Lebanon, Iraq, Syria or Yemen, also known as the “axis of resistance”.
In a longer readout of the call than the brief summary
provided by the UK Foreign Office, the Iranian foreign ministry said Cleverly
was urged to adopt a realistic approach to the conflict and recognise that the
“resistance forces” were fighting an occupation by an Israeli government that
was committing war crimes amounting to genocide and acting without any proportionaliity.

UK Defence Ministry Cuts Ties With Muslim Council Of

Under the new orders sent out by ministers this week,
the ministry must end the groups' involvement in endorsing imams to become
military chaplains.
The Telegraph newspaper first revealed the crackdown
and said senior Conservative party officials had described the arrangement as “shocking”.

Stanford Hit-and-Run That Injured Muslim Student
Probed as Hate Crime
Josh Fiallo
5 November 2023
California authorities say they’re probing a
hit-and-run involving a Muslim student on the campus of Stanford University as
a potential hate crime, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday. The
incident, which occurred Friday, sent the unnamed student to a hospital with
non-life-threatening injuries. The victim reportedly told police they had made
eye contact with the driver of a black SUV before he attempted to mow them
down. The victim claimed that the driver then yelled “fuck you people” out of
his window before speeding away, the Chronicle reported. The vehicle’s driver
had not been arrested or identified by Saturday afternoon, but the victim
reportedly described him to cops as being a white man in his 20s “with short
dirty-blond hair and a short beard.” There has been an uptick in violent crime
against Muslims and Jewish people over the last month amid the ongoing war
between Israel and Hamas, but authorities did not indicate if the conflict was
thought to be a factor in Friday’s incident.

forum in Johannesburg to have the programme extended. It is currently slated to
expire in September 2025.
AGOA is US legislation that allows sub-Saharan African
countries duty-free access to US markets provided they meet certain conditions,
including adherence to the rule of law and the protection of human rights.
Addressing the forum this week, South African
President Cyril Ramaphosa called on the US Congress to extend the programme for
a far longer period than the previous 10-year extension granted in 2015. More
than 30 African countries that are part of the AGOA programme participated in
the forum, where African businesses showcased products ranging from food and
jewellery to electronics. The forum concluded Saturday.
"Africa is on the precipice of an unprecedented
demographic boom. The timely reauthorisation of AGOA is important to provide
business certainty and show the United States' continued support towards
Africa's economic growth," said House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman
Michael McCaul and ranking member Gregory Meeks in a statement.

The October 7 invasion and massacre of Israelis by

Bosnian Director’s Short On Muslims And Jews Saving
One Another Is A ‘Mitzvah’
By SHIRA LI BARTOV
4 November 2023
JTA — In 1941 Sarajevo, a Muslim woman hid her Jewish
friend from fascist roundups. Half a century later, that same Muslim woman was
trapped in the besieged capital during the 1992-1995 Bosnian War — and her
Jewish friend made sure she got out.
These real events inspired “Sevap/Mitzvah,” a short
film directed by Sabina Vajrača that won the 2023 Humanitas Prize, among other
awards, and has qualified to be considered for the 2024 Oscar for best live
action short.
The film has been shown across the world, including at
the Cleveland International Film Festival and the Joyce Forum Jewish Short Film
Festival in San Diego. Upcoming screenings include the Ojai Film Festival in
Ojai, California, on November 5 and the Lake County Film Festival in Grayslake,
Illinois, between November 3-12.
“I wanted to tell a story about Jews and Muslims
coexisting peacefully and happily, and helping one another, which is the
narrative that we don’t really hear,” Vajrača told the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency. Vajrača herself escaped the Bosnian War as a teenager, arriving in the
United States as a refugee.

Iran could determine how far the Israel-Hamas war
spreads
By Ellen Ioanes
Nov 4, 2023
In his first public statement about Israel’s war with
Hamas, Lebanese Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Friday indicated that the
Shia militant group — though supportive of Hamas’ bloody October 7 attack on
Israel — wouldn’t be opening up another front in the war just yet.
Hezbollah, which the US and other countries have
designated as a terror group, has engaged in cross-border firefights with
Israel since the October 7 attack. That’s not particularly new; there is
regularly low-level conflict across the so-called Blue Line, the line of
demarcation between Lebanon and Israel, which UN peacekeepers have been
deployed to monitor since 2006. But given its proximity to the conflict and
Hezbollah’s close affiliation with Iran, it’s a possible front to expand the
war.
Lebanon is not the only place at risk of spillover
conflict; Iran-backed militias have been attacking US forces in Iraq and Syria,
launching 27 attacks at US bases since October 17 after several months without
any such attacks. And the Houthis, an Iran-backed Shia group which controls
much of southern Yemen, have lobbed missiles and drones in Israel’s direction,
though those have been intercepted by US warships in the eastern Mediterranean,
as well as by Israeli missile defense systems. “The Iranians are happy to
activate their proxy groups and let other people do the fighting and dying —
and frankly a lot of the proxy groups are happy to do the fighting and dying,”
Jon Alterman, president of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic
and International Studies, told Vox.
Iran, to varying degrees, funds and provides resources
to each of these groups, as well as Hamas. “Iran’s relationship with other
groups really fits onto a spectrum,” Ali Vaez, director of the Iran project at
the International Crisis Group, told Vox. “At one side of the spectrum you have
Hezbollah, because Iran’s relationship with Hezbollah is really like two NATO
allies.” Hezbollah has only Iran as a state backer, while Hamas and militant
groups in Iraq and Syria have relationships with other nations.

Thousands Across Iran Protest Against US, Israel
November 04, 2023
TEHRAN, IRAN — Thousands of protesters rallied across
Iran on Saturday against the United States and Israel and in support of
Palestinians in the war-torn Gaza Strip.
"Down with USA" and "Down with

Tensions between Iran and the United States have
worsened since the October 7 attacks on close U.S. ally Israel by Hamas gunmen
who Israeli officials say killed about 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and
seized more than 240 hostages.
Since then, Israel has bombarded the Gaza Strip and
sent in ground troops, with the health ministry in the Hamas-run Palestinian
territory saying 9,488 people have been killed, about two-thirds of them women

Taliban appeal to Afghan private sector to help those

November 4, 2023
ISLAMABAD (AP) — The Taliban on Saturday appealed to
Afghanistan’s private sector to help people fleeing Pakistan’s mass deportation

Pakistan is arresting and expelling all foreigners it
says are in the country illegally, but the policy mostly affects Afghans
because they are the biggest group of undocumented foreigners in the country.
The Taliban made a similar plea last month after
devastating earthquakes killed thousands of people and flattened entire
villages in the west, asking Afghanistan’s “wealthy compatriots” to help
survivors and affected communities. Nobody from the Taliban-led administration

Faisal bin Farhan on Saturday took part in a Arab-US meeting on Gaza held in
the Jordanian capital, Amman, the Kingdom’s Foreign Ministry said.
The meeting discussed the Arab position, which calls
for an “immediate cessation of military operations that have led to the loss of
innocent lives, and urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip,” the
ministry said in a statement.
The meeting also discussed efforts to “create a stable
environment and restore the path to peace, ensuring that the Palestinian people
obtain their legitimate rights and the achievement of a just and lasting
peace.”
