Caliphate or democracy: Bangladesh’s future hangs in balance
NC Bipindra
March 29, 202
Interference in social, cultural, and educational activities by Islamist groups has been recurring in Bangladesh. Representational image: REUTERS.
-----------
With the Sheikh Hasina regime’s fall in Bangladesh and the complete ostracisation of the Awami League, it may appear that the second (now largest) party—the Bangladesh Nationalist Party—has made the most significant political gains.
However, the political scenario six months after Hasina’s deposition reflects a different picture—the resurgence of Islamist politics and, in effect, the secular/fundamentalist debate making a comeback.
On one hand, the Islamist parties are buckling up to secure political legitimacy now that a national election is slated for December.
On the other hand, Islamist groups are increasingly influencing Bangladesh’s social life, raising concerns about the country’s future under Islamist rule if it indeed becomes a reality.
Second, it released on bail the al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) chief, Jashimuddin Rahmani, convicted of ABT’s terror activities from 2013 to 2016.
Cases against Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mamnul Haque, along with other allied parties involved in the Shapla Square massacre case, were also dismissed, paving the way for Haque’s return to politics.
Third, to everyone’s shock, Yunus met the leaders of several Islamist parties, including Hefazat-e-Islam, to discuss political reforms.
Of the 44 active political parties in Bangladesh, 13 are Islamist parties. The Jamaat-e-Islami, the Islami Andolan, and the Khilafat Majlis promote a political model based on Islamic doctrine, especially the Islamic Sharia law.
Their demands for constitutional reform in line with Islamic principles, which inevitably are against secular principles of the 1972 constitution, have been on the horizon.
Meanwhile, Islamist organisations, long stifled by the previous Awami League government, found new breathing spaces to push for their demands.
Just a day after the establishment of the interim government, Hizb ut Tahir (HuT-B), a pan-Islamist jihadist organisation banned in Bangladesh under the Anti-Terrorism Act since 2009, organised a rally in Dhaka outside its largest mosque demanding the establishment of the Islamic Caliphate system in Bangladesh.
It said the caliphate is the only path to ‘real liberation’, while the organisation’s Bangladesh chief even demanded the ban be lifted by the interim government.
HuT-B also hit the headlines for allegedly orchestrating a procession by Dhaka students under the banner of ‘Conscious Teachers and Students’ in October, where they carried flags that closely resembled the ISIS flag and openly demanded the establishment of an Islamic Caliphate system in Bangladesh.
In December, Yunus appointed Nasimul Gani, one of the founding members of HuT-B, as the home secretary of the interim government, indicating the inclusion of those affiliated with extremist organisations in the state administration.
Hefazat-e-Islam, another prominent Islamist organisation noted for its opposition to Bangladesh’s present constitutional and societal setting and championing a conservative take on Islamic values in their 13-point demands, has also been prominent lately. Its chief, Mamunul Haque, advocated the withdrawal of almost 300 cases slapped against its organisation leaders and members. The organisation further demanded a ban on the Awami League.
The interim government has somehow conceded to this demand and banned the Awami League’s student wing—Bangladesh Chhatra League—though many point out that this ban is unfair and unconstitutional.
Recently, Haque, in a public meeting in Cox’s Bazar, opined the complete erasure of the present constitution where no law against the Quran and Sunnah can be added to the constitution.
Members of Hefazat are now active in blocking highways and disrupting public life, in their protest demanding the withdrawal of all cases of violence filed against more than 3,000 of its members from 2016 to 2021.
Jamaat-e-Islami, the largest Islamist political party, is busy removing the tag of ‘war criminal’ attached to it while showing no indication of apologising for its unforgiving role in the 1971 liberation war.
Assuming a ‘moderate’ and ‘tolerant’ role, Jamaat now desires a political transition to an ‘Islamic welfare state’. Jammat proposed 81 reforms to the interim government in October last, predominantly educational and cultural reforms to align them with Islamic values. Jamaat’s Ameer also recently met Pakistan’s high commissioner to strengthen bilateral ties.
Indeed, the credit for Bangladesh’s present warming up its relations with Pakistan, not demanding an ‘official apology’ from Pakistan for its role in the 1971 war, goes to the Jamaat. A strong Pakistan-Bangladesh tie will erase Jamaat’s historical baggage and help gain political legitimacy.
Boldly, Jamaat’s Ameer has called Ghulam Azam, the notorious Jamaat leader executed for its crimes against humanity in the 1971 Liberation War, a ‘victim of Awami League tyranny’ and has been organising rallies to pressure the interim government to release Jamaat’s assistant secretary general ATM Azharul Islam, who has been convicted of crimes against humanity under the International Crimes Tribunal.
Like the BNP, the Jamaat has intensified efforts to woo Islamist parties to form alliances in the upcoming national election. One of the demands for political reforms among Islamist parties is their preference for a proportional representation vote, replacing the existing first-past-the-post, which they believe will enable Islamist parties to gain in national polls.
On the other hand, interference in social, cultural, and educational activities by Islamist groups has been recurring. Under their pressure, the interim government is believed to revise textbooks.
Earlier, the committee established for revising textbooks was dissolved under criticism for not including Islamic scholars in the committee. The revised textbooks have eroded Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s legacy, rewritten the history of the 1971 war, and downplayed India’s role in it—all conducive to removing Jamaat’s ‘war crime’ tag.
Events like Lalon Fakir’s death anniversary and Basanta Utsav faced obstruction and cancellation for being incompatible with Islam, and women’s football tournaments faced cancellation for being ‘un-Islamic’, adding to the spike in anti-women fundamentalism.
It is, therefore, clear that Islamist politics in Bangladesh has a resurgence. While it is giving a few glimpses of Bangladesh’s future under Islamist rule, it remains to be seen if the people’s mandate agrees to such a dream.

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has compiled profiles of 1,987 individuals involved in terrorist activities in order to develop a comprehensive database of terrorists and their sympathisers under the recently unveiled Provincial Action Plan against terrorism.
Minutes of the meeting, a copy of which is available with Dawn, revealed that the participants discussed unrolling of the action plan, coordinated efforts to uproot terrorism, fostering trust between people and state and upgrading police equipment.
The home and tribal affairs department will take the lead in the monitoring and execution of the plan besides serving as a nerve centre for its coordination, according to the minutes.
Officials informed the forum that under the action plan to dismantle the terrorism ecosystem, 609 people had been put on Schedule IV of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, and 1,856 head money cases had been processed. Israel blocks full access to Ibrahimi Mosque for Muslims during Eid al-Fitr
Awad Rjoob
30.03.2025
Israel is refusing to fully open the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron in the southern West Bank, to Muslim worshippers for the Eid al-Fitr holiday, the Palestinian Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs said Saturday.
“The occupation refuses to hand over the Ibrahimi Mosque, with all its halls, courtyards, and sections, for the celebration of blessed Eid al-Fitr,” Awqaf Minister Mohamed Najm said in a statement.
Najm pointed out that it marks the sixth time since the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan that precedes Eid al-Fitr that Israeli authorities have refused to open the entire mosque to worshippers, describing it as “a blatant and unprecedented violation of the Ibrahimi Mosque, a provocation to Muslim sentiments, and a disregard for the sanctity of religious rites.”
Najm urged residents of the Hebron Governorate to “attend both the dawn and Eid prayers tomorrow, to affirm our steadfastness and resilience in the face of the occupation's Judaization plans.”
Earlier Saturday, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories, Sheikh Muhammad Ahmad Hussein, announced that Sunday will be the first day of Eid al-Fitr.
The Ibrahimi Mosque is located in the Old City of Hebron in the southern West Bank, which is under Israeli occupation. It is home to around 400 illegal settlers guarded by approximately 1,500 Israeli soldiers.
In 1994, following a massacre by an illegal settler that killed 29 Palestinian worshipers, Israel divided the mosque, allocating 63% of its area to Jews, including the prayer room, and 37% to Muslims.
Tension has been running high across the West Bank, where more than 940 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 7,000 others injured in attacks by the Israeli army and illegal settlers since the start of the Gaza onslaught on Oct. 7, 2023, according to the Health Ministry.
The International Court of Justice declared Israel’s long-standing occupation of Palestinian territories illegal in July, calling for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, BIMSTEC summit in Thailand, Trump tariffs
March 30, 2025

----------
All eyes are on the tariffs that the U.S. is imposing on major trading partners, which President Donald Trump has said he will announce on April 2. On the same day, leaders of seven countries from South Asia and Southeast Asia will gather for the BIMSTEC summit In Thailand.
Earlier in the week, Muslims across the region will celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the day that marks the end of Ramadan. South Korea will lift a ban on short-selling imposed in 2020, while the Bank of Japan will release its Tankan quarterly economic survey.
Short-selling will resume for all shares on Seoul's stock market, five years after a ban was imposed. The lifting of the ban is expected to help the South Korean market get its shares included in global indexes, for which Seoul has yearned for a long time. However, the move has also raised concerns over near-term volatility, particularly among individual investors.
Eid al-Fitr, the most important Muslim holiday that marks the end of a month of fasting during the daytime, is expected to begin. In Indonesia, home to the world's largest Muslim population, millions of people will travel to their hometowns to celebrate. It is the biggest consumer spending time in the country, but there are rising concerns among businesses that spending will drop this year as the middle class shrinks.
The Bank of Japan's Tankan quarterly sentiment survey will give investors their first chance to assess the impact on the Japanese economy of the steel and aluminum tariffs that U.S. President Donald Trump imposed on March 12. Economists expect the headline diffusion index to show a small setback, but not serious enough to derail the BOJ's monetary tightening campaign.
Thailand will host meetings and the summit of a seven-nation regional grouping comprising mostly South Asian countries over three days from Wednesday, with member states expected to focus on strengthening transport connectivity. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is among the leaders attending the summit of the BIMSTEC, or Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, and Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar's military leader is also expected to join. BIMSTEC includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal and Sri Lanka besides India and Thailand.
U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to end weeks of suspense and announce reciprocal tariffs on other countries, on what he has billed "Liberation Day" for American trade. His administration has already targeted neighbors Canada and Mexico and superpower rival China with new tariffs while imposing additional levies on steel, aluminum and most recently automobiles. The scope of the coming duties remains unclear, with Trump hinting that he could be "lenient" in some cases, but countries the U.S. has referred to as the "dirty 15" are feeling the heat.
Modi will fly to Sri Lanka for a three-day state visit after the BIMSTEC summit in Thailand and hold discussions with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka. The island nation was seen as becoming more pro-China during the administration of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, but Dissanayake, who took office in September last year, chose India for his first overseas visit, a move widely seen as tipping the balance between the two big powers. Several memoranda of understanding are expected to be exchanged.

Eid Mubarak meaning and how to wish someone a happy Eid ul-Fitr for 2025
By Alya Zayed
Muslims across the UK and globally are set to celebrate Eid today (Sunday, March 30). The festivities mark the end of Ramadan and the beginning of a new month.
The celebration follows Ramadan, a period during which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, breaking their fast with a grand evening meal shared with friends and family, known as iftar.
Eid ul-Fitr, also spelled Eid al-Fitr, is further characterised by increased prayer, acts of kindness, and charitable donations. Children typically receive cash gifts and don new outfits for the occasion.
The dates and duration of these celebrations vary annually due to Islam's adherence to a lunar calendar, aligning the festivities with the moon's phases. As a result, both Ramadan and Eid shift slightly earlier each year.
If you're wondering how to extend your well-wishes for Eid, you can say 'Eid Mubarak', translating to 'have a blessed Eid'. Alternatively, 'Eid Saeed' means 'Happy Eid'.
For those in London looking to join in the Eid al-Fitr celebrations, the largest festival will be held at both Westfield locations in White City and Stratford. The free London Eid Festival will take place at Westfield White City from April 4-12, and then at Westfield Stratford from April 11-13.

White House Correspondents’ Association Drops Anti-Trump Comedian Amber Ruffin From Annual Dinner
Pedro Rodriguez
March 29, 2025
The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) announced Saturday it would exclude comedian Amber Ruffin from performing at its annual dinner on April 26 to avoid focusing “on the politics of division.”
“[T]he WHCA board has unanimously decided we are no longer featuring a comedic performance this year,” WHCA president Eugene Daniels announced in an email to the White House press corps.
“At this consequential moment for journalism, I want to ensure that the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists,” Daniels wrote.
While the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner bills itself as non-partisan, Ruffin has a history of being an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump. The event itself aims to raise funds for the Association’s work, journalism scholarships and educating the public about the First Amendment and a free press.
“I don’t know that anyone’s looking forward to being in the same room as him,” Ruffin said during a Feb. 5, 2025 exchange with CNN’s Jake Tapper. She also stated she’d make use of any anti-Trump sentiments during her set. (RELATED: Comedian Amber Ruffin Reveals She Will Go Full Liberal Hack At WHCA Dinner, Doesn’t Want Trump To Attend)
After Trump’s defeat of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, Ruffin, in an interview with Advocate, an LGBT-interest magazine, weeks ahead of the 2024 election, called him a “gross president.”
“They have to do their best to find flaws in what Kamala is saying and doing, but this man gets to be a toddler with his pants pulled down doing whatever he wants, but she has to be perfect,” Ruffin echoed in an October 2024 appearance on CNN’s “Have I Got News For You” television show.
President Trump did not attend the Association’s high-profile dinners during his first term and is not expected to attend in 2025. Furthermore, current White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt “will not be in attendance,” she told former White House press secretary Sean Spicer during his March 14 podcast.
“When I began to think about what entertainer would be a perfect fit for the dinner this year, Amber was immediately at the top of my list,” Daniels told The Daily Caller in February.
Ruffin “has the ability to walk the line between blistering commentary and humor all while provoking her audience to think about the important issues of the day,” Daniels added at the time.
The dinner has previously been used as a stage for featured politicians to poke fun at opponents through both satirical remarks and the help of comedians. (RELATED: The White House Correspondents’ Dinner Was A Monument To Corporate Press’ Self-Importance And Left-Wing Cronyism)
President Joe Biden, criticized for making the 2024 dinner into a political rally, took the stage alongside “Saturday Night Live” comedian Colin Jost. Jost questioned why President Trump was close to President Biden in national polling, despite Biden’s “strong economy.”
Criticism was also levied at Biden and other attendees of the dinner by anti-Israel protesters yelling, “Shame on you,” while calling President Biden “genocide Joe” for his position during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
“The White House Correspondents’ Dinner was really bad. Colin Jost BOMBED, and Crooked Joe was an absolute disaster! Doesn’t get much worse than this!” Trump wrote April 28 on Truth Social following the 2024 dinner.

“Our relationship has been very strong over the years. Our business is very strong and we benefit from our collaboration with China”, Mr. Yunus said.
“Hong Lei, Assistant Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and also the Chief Protocol Officer of the Chinese President Xi Jinping, sees off Yunus on Saturday at the Beijing Capital International Airport at the conclusion of his historic four-day official visit to China,” a post on X by Yunus' official handle said.

“It's very important that we see China as our good friend,” Mr. Yunus said, projecting Beijing as a balancing factor against New Delhi.
After his China visit, Mr. Yunus is scheduled to visit Thailand to take part in the BIMSTEC summit. He has sought a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi but India is yet to confirm it.
In his talks with Mr. Xi, Mr. Yunus urged China to play a greater role in establishing peace, prosperity and stability for both nations.
A joint statement issued after the Xi-Yunus talks said Bangladesh welcomed Chinese companies to participate in the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP).
Mr. Yunus highlighted last year's July-August students' mass protests in Bangladesh leading to the ouster of Hasina government in his talks with Xi, adding that the students’ movement paved a way to build a New Bangladesh.

Case filed against ex-Bangladesh PM Hasina for plot to oust Yunus govt
Mar 29 2025
Bangladesh police have filed a case against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 72 others on charges of hatching a conspiracy to overthrow the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus by waging a civil war, officials and media reports said on Saturday.
Yes, our Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has filed the case with Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on charge of conspiracy to topple the existing government, a police official said.
The CID filed the case after receiving information about an online meeting on December 19, 2024, where participants formed a platform called the "Joy Bangla Brigade" and discussed plans to re-install Hasina back to power through a civil war.
Voice recordings of the conversation between former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the host, co-host, and other participating leaders and activists - hosted by Dr Rabbi Alam - revealed that the attendees vowed not to allow the legitimate government to run the country peacefully, the state-run BSS reported citing the case.

Wishing all a safe and joyous Eid
Mar 30, 2025
As Ramadan draws to a close, let us carry forward the valuable lessons it instils in us. As a nation, we should strive to be more charitable, moderate, and grateful—virtues that Ramadan inspires. These values should not be confined to the month of fasting but should guide our actions throughout the year, fostering a more compassionate and just society. Let us hope that, as the month of Ramadan nears its end, we will have rekindled these values within ourselves and, indeed, passed them on to others.
At the same time, the joyous occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr is fast approaching. In anticipation of celebrating with their loved ones, tens of thousands of people have already begun leaving Dhaka by train, bus, and launch. Reports indicate that this year's Eid journey has been relatively smoother for most travellers, thanks to the strategic measures implemented by the authorities. The introduction of special train and bus services, along with enhanced traffic management, has helped ease congestion. We commend the government for its efforts to improve the transport sector and hope that such measures continue to be refined and expanded in the future.
However, despite these improvements, there have been reports of passengers being overcharged in certain areas. We urge the authorities to remain vigilant and take strict action against those exploiting travellers during this festive season. Additionally, with a significant exodus from major cities—particularly Dhaka—law enforcement agencies must remain extra cautious to ensure that law and order are maintained. The risk of accidents, extortion, and theft increases during this period, and it is crucial for security personnel to remain on high alert on highways, in public transport hubs, and across both urban and rural areas.

Terrorism assessment for Afghanistan
Luke Coffey
March 29, 2025
According to the US government’s annual threat assessment, released by its intelligence community this week, Daesh remains the most significant terrorism challenge facing America and its partners.
The assessment is part of a broader report that addresses all threats to the US including, but not limited to, terrorism. Notably, this year’s report includes an alarming section about the role of Daesh in Afghanistan.
It states that Daesh’s Afghan branch, the so-called ISIS-K, “remains the most capable of carrying out external terrorist attacks and maintains the intent to conduct attacks in South and Central Asia, and globally, although its capabilities vary.” The report also warns that the group is “expanding capability beyond South Asia and ability to inspire individuals to conduct attacks abroad.”
The US is not alone in this assessment. A recent report by the UN Security Council similarly highlighted the growing threat from Daesh in Afghanistan. It stated that the group maintains a presence throughout South and Central Asia, even though its operational hub remains in Afghanistan.
The report included detailed intelligence on the group’s infrastructure, noting: “The recruits (for Daesh) received training near the Yawan district of Badakhshan province, where a camp for fighters and suicide bombers was located.”
The fact that the UN report could provide such precise details without prompting meaningful international discussion about how to address the threat is deeply concerning.
But it is not only Daesh that remains a concern. It is well known that Al-Qaeda has been allowed to reestablish its foothold in Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power in August 2021. This is evidenced by open-source intelligence gleaned from social media posts, publicly available assessments from various intelligence agencies, and the US drone strike that killed Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri in Kabul in July 2022.

Taliban releases detained US citizen Faye Hall
Phil McCausland
30-03-2025
An American citizen, who was held by the Taliban in Afghanistan for two months, has been released, Washington's former envoy to Kabul has said.
Faye Hall will "soon be heading home" after she was arrested by the Taliban in February, Zalmay Khalilzad, who served as the US special representative for Afghanistan from 2018-2021, wrote on X.
Ms Hall, who is now in the care of Qatari officials, was detained alongside a British couple in their seventies - Barbie and Peter Reynolds - and their interpreter.
The couple ran training programmes for women and girls, and stayed when the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan in 2021. Afghan officials have not made the reason for their arrest public.
Ms Hall is the fourth US citizen released by the Taliban since January after Qatar brokered an agreement with them. Just days earlier, they freed another American, George Glezmann, who had been held for two years.
At the time, the government said the airline mechanic was released on "humanitarian grounds," and that the decision was a "goodwill gesture".
Those were the highest-level direct talks between the two countries since President Trump's inauguration, though the new American administration's policy plans for the Taliban and Afghanistan remain unclear.

‘Muslim leaders are constantly lying’: BJP MP on Waqf Bill
Mar 29, 2025
Manoj Tiwari appealed to the Muslims not to get trapped in the words of Muslim leaders.
Reacting to AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi's incessant attacks on the BJP over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari said several Muslim leaders had been lying to the community. He said these leaders had been trying to place a black band on the eyes of the Muslims.
"Muslim leaders are constantly lying to the Muslim community on the Waqf Bill. The Muslim leaders are putting the black band in the eyes of Muslims. The Amendment was based on complaints of over 10,000 Muslims. People like Owaisi are giving the wrong message to Muslims for appeasement. First, the JPC was formed, and when the bill was prepared, home minister Amit Shah asked to give suggestions, but no one gave any suggestions," he said.
He was referring to a protest called by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) in which it asked Muslims to wear black armbands as a mark of protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill while offering namaz on the occasion of Alvida Jumma. Owaisi attended such a protest in Hyderabad on Friday.

Waqf Bill being brought to loot Muslim properties, says Asaduddin Owaisi
Mar 29, 2025
Hyderabad: AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday termed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill as "looters (amendment) law", as he accused BJP and RSS of planning to loot the waqf properties of Muslims.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill violates several provisions of the Constitution, including Articles 14, 25, 26, and 29. "The BJP-led NDA govt is doing the work of looters. They want to snatch away waqf properties. It should not be called Waqf (Amendment) Bill but ‘looters (amendment) law'," Owaisi told reporters here.
On Union home minister Amit Shah's reported remarks on 123 properties in New Delhi, Owaisi said the Sachar Committee said the properties belonged to the waqf and its market value was 3,000 crore in 2007. The present value of these properties could be at least 10,000 crore.

Suvendu Adhikari flags 'recruitment scam' in Deocha: TMC MP Samirul Islam denies allegations
Snehamoy Chakraborty
30.03.25
The leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, on Saturday slammed the Trinamool Congress for alleged irregularities in the employment of land losers at Deocha-Pachami for the proposed coal mining project.
Adhikari announced a movement against the alleged corruption and legal support for local tribal people who wished to move the court for a proper investigation intothe matter.
This shows that the BJP has decided to create fresh embarrassment for Mamata Banerjee, who has promoted the proposed coal mine project in Birbhum district as one of her industrial successes ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
“TMC Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam, assigned by Mamata Banerjee in Deocha, helped 26 people secure jobs although they had not parted with their land for the project. Many of those 26 people are relatives of Samirul,” Adhikari told a media conference at the BJP office in Suri, Birbhum, where he presented a set of documents to justify the alleged recruitment scam.

Eid 2025 moon sighting LIVE: India, Pakistan Muslims to see Shawwal crescent at this time; Saudi, UAE mark Eid-ul-Fitr
By Zarafshan Shiraz
Mar 30, 2025
This festival, often called the ‘Festival of Breaking the Fast’, brings a sense of renewal, gratitude and togetherness, making it a time of deep spiritual and communal significance. However, the date of Eid can vary from country to country, as lunar months are either 29 or 30 days long.
Since the Islamic calendar follows the moon, Eid-ul-Fitr moves approximately 10 to 11 days earlier each year, gradually shifting across different seasons over time. This variation means that Muslims across the globe may celebrate on different days, adding to the festival’s dynamic and diverse nature.
Eid-ul-Fitr is not just about celebration; it marks the culmination of a month of deep spiritual devotion as throughout Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food, drink and worldly distractions while dedicating themselves to prayer, self-reflection and acts of kindness. The final nights of Ramadan hold special significance, especially Laylatul Qadr (often referred to as the Night of Power) that is believed to be the holiest night of the year.
Beyond fasting, Ramadan is a time of giving hence, Muslims contribute to charitable causes by offering Zakat (mandatory almsgiving) and Sadaqah (voluntary charity) to support the less fortunate, reinforcing the values of generosity and compassion that are central to Islam. With the arrival of Eid-ul-Fitr, the air is filled with excitement.

Pakistan fires back at Indian FM barbs over minority rights
Baqir Sajjad Syed
March 30, 2025
ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office on Saturday called on India to focus on improving the treatment of its own minorities rather than expressing concern over minority rights in Pakistan.
“India is in no position to champion minority rights, as it remains a serial violator of those very rights,” said the FO in a statement issued in response to remarks made by India’s Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishankar in the Lok Sabha regarding the state of minorities in Pakistan.
Mr Jaishankar had alleged that minorities in Pakistan faced persecution, including incidents of intimidation, forced conversions, and violence.

Farhan Mallick’s plea against bail dismissal to be taken up after Eid
Ishaq Tanoli
March 30, 2025
KARACHI: A district court on Saturday issued notices to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on a bail application of journalist Farhan Mallick in a case related to alleged anti-state content on his YouTube channel.
The suspect through his lawyer filed an application before the district and sessions judge east after a judicial magistrate had dismissed his post-arrest bail plea.
Representing the applicant, advocate Abdul Moiz Jaferii argued that the impugned FIR lodged by the FIA was merely a fishing expedition to conjure up a case against the applicant in an abuse of Peca laws as the applicant had no nexus with illegalities detailed therein and the entire edifice of the allegations levelled against him was not supported by even a speck of evidence.

SMOKERS’ CORNER: HARD STATE, SOFT STATE
Nadeem F. Paracha
March 30, 2025
The era of presenting a ‘soft image’ of a country is coming to an end. In the last two decades or so, many developing countries — especially those hit hard by terrorism and violence — began shaping advocacy avenues and platforms, through which they tried to establish that the inherent culture of their countries was soft, pluralistic and friendly.
They bemoaned that their countries were largely misunderstood due to the antics of a handful of violent groups. These countries mostly consisted of Muslim-majority nation states such as Pakistan, Egypt and Algeria that had been facing persistent incidents of Islamist terrorism and religious violence ever since the 1980s.
Last week, the Pakistan army chief, Gen Asim Munir, told parliamentarians that if Pakistan were to successfully address the challenges posed by rising political, Islamist and ethnic militancy, the country would have to become a ‘hard state.’
In 1999, when a military coup in Pakistan put Gen Parvez Musharraf in power, he cracked down on the country’s two largest parties. But parallel to this, the Musharraf dictatorship also began to initiate programmes designed to broadcast a “soft image” of Pakistan. Attempts were made to mitigate the violent outcomes of tensions that had risen in the polity. These outcomes included sectarian violence, ethnic clashes and the erosion of the last bits of ‘moderate/liberal Islam’ remaining in the country.
For decades, nations plagued by terrorism and political instability, such as Pakistan, have tried to project a ‘soft image’ to the world. But faced with rising militancy and governance crises, is a shift towards a more authoritarian and centralised state inevitable?
Assured of his power and ‘popularity’, Musharraf not only sidelined political parties that opposed him but also went after sectarian and Islamist groups that were once supported by the state as “strategic assets” to be used in Afghanistan and in India-held Kashmir. However, his regime was highly selective in this because it ‘protected’ some of these assets for possible future missions. But the elimination of others was exhibited as an example of Pakistan yearning to become a “moderate country” again.
Tourism was promoted and a plethora of modern and traditional cultural activities were encouraged. These were then broadcast to the world to proliferate a soft image of what, in 2011, the British policy analyst Anatol Lieven would go on to describe as “a hard country.”

11 killed in Mardan security action
Muhammad Jamal Hoti
March 30, 2025
MARDAN: At least 11 people were killed in Mardan in what locals insisted was a drone strike, but officials said was an operation carried out against militants.
A press note issued by the provincial government early on Saturday also acknowledged the death of civilians but called it collateral damage.
The statement said a counter-terrorism operation was conducted in the remote hilltop area of Katlang based on intelligence regarding the presence of armed militants using the location as a hideout and transit point.
The operation “successfully neutralised” several high-value targets allegedly involved in militant activities in the region, as per the official version.
“Unfortunately, subsequent reports confirmed the presence of non-combatants, including women and children, at the periphery of the target zone, resulting in tragic civilian casualties,” added the press note.
It said immediate steps were being taken to “investigate the circumstances surrounding civilian presence in the area, extend medical assistance to the injured [and] facilitate relief and compensation for the victims’ families”.

Iran a central supporter of Palestinian cause: Qassem
Mar 30, 2025
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is a central backer of the Palestinian cause,” Sheikh Naim Qassem said, delivering an address on the occasion of the International Quds Day, a pro-Palestinian event marked on an annual basis worldwide, on Friday.
He pointed to the occasion’s having been pioneered by the late founder of Iran’s Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, who, following the victory of Iran’s Islamic Revolution under his leadership, designated the last Friday of the holy month of Ramdan as the global Quds Day, and urged that the day be marked worldwide each year.
“The late Imam Khomeini declared [the last Friday of each Ramadan] a global day to confront oppression and tyranny,” Sheikh Qassem noted.
“According to Imam Khamenei, the Palestinian cause is not a political tactic, but a matter of faith, heart, and belief,” he said, adding, “This day extends from Palestine to the whole world, but its central point remains Palestine.”

Why do we celebrate Quds Day?
By: Najah Mohammed Ali
Mar 30, 2025
The issue of Al-Quds Al-Sharif, Palestine, and the crimes of the Zionist occupation in the occupied Palestinian territories have occupied the minds of all freedom advocates worldwide, especially Muslims and lovers of freedom in the Islamic world, ever since the Zionist regime settled in Jerusalem and other Palestinian cities, seizing the land by force, displacing people from their homes, and invading Palestinian territories and neighboring countries.
According to Islamic principles, Muslims must not ignore this issue or remain silent in the face of any act of coercion against Muslims or even humanity as a whole.
For this reason, the late Imam Khomeini designated the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan as Quds Day—a day when the people of the Islamic Republic and other Islamic countries, as well as the free people of the world, hold rallies and demonstrations to defend the rights of the Palestinian people.
Quds Day was first commemorated in the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979. Since then, the world has heard the voices of support for Jerusalem, and programs marking this occasion have been held annually in different parts of the world.
Every year, the International Quds Day is observed spontaneously and by the masses across the globe. In Iran, in particular, commemorating this day has led to immense pressure from countries that support the Zionist entity. Iran has faced unprecedented international, European, and American sanctions, unparalleled in history, solely to force it to abandon its stance on Jerusalem and Palestine.
The world has not only remained silent but has also seen many countries normalize relations with the Zionist entity and establish diplomatic ties at the expense of the Palestinian people. However, Quds Day marches have delivered a powerful message to this oppressed nation from Iran and influential countries in the region and the world: their people will never forget Palestine, will continue to support it, and will not waver until the ultimate goal is achieved—liberation, no matter the cost.

The IDF and the Shin Bet announced on Saturday evening that in recent days, they have recovered remains from the Gaza Strip associated with the body of the murdered hostage Menachem (Manny) Goddard, who was murdered by Islamic Jihad on October 7.
Kan News has learned that earlier this week, IDF soldiers from the Yahalom unit and the Golani Reconnaissance Unit located remains near an Islamic Jihad outpost in Rafah. These remains were sent for forensic examination in a focused operation.

Speaking at the square, Goddard said: "The family demands that no soldier be sent to risk his life in order to recover our father’s body."
Seventy-five-year-old Goddard was abducted from his home in Kibbutz Be’eri and murdered by terrorists on October 7. The announcement of his death was made on December 8, 2023. US judge halts deportation of pro-Palestinian student
March 30, 2025
BOSTON/NEWARK: A federal judge in Massachusetts on Friday temporarily barred the deportation of a Turkish doctoral student at Tufts University, who voiced support for Palestinians in Israel’s conflict in Gaza and was detained by US immigration officials this week.
Rumeysa Ozturk, 30, was taken into custody by US immigration authorities near her Massachusetts home on Tuesday, according to a video showing the arrest by masked federal agents. US officials revoked her visa.
The US Department of Homeland Security has accused Ozturk, without providing evidence, of “engaging in activities in support of Hamas,” a group which the US government categorises as a “foreign terrorist organisation”.
OncuKeceli, a spokesperson for Turkiye’s foreign ministry, said efforts to secure Ozturk’s release continued, adding consular and legal support was being provided by Turkish diplomatic missions in the US “Our Houston Consul General visited our citizen in the centre where she is being held in Louisiana on March 28. Our citizen’s requests and demands have been forwarded to local authorities and her lawyer,” Keceli said in a post on X.
Ozturk’s arrest came a year after she co-authored an opinion piece in Tufts’ student newspaper criticising the university’s response to calls by students to divest from companies with ties to Israel and to “acknowledge the Palestinian genocide”.

Denmark criticizes US vice president's 'tone’ on Greenland
Ebad Ahmed
30.03.2025
Denmark rebuked US Vice President JD Vance on Saturday after he criticized Denmark’s governance of Greenland as he visited the Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland.
“We are open to criticism, but let me be completely honest, we do not appreciate the tone in which it’s being delivered. This is not how you speak to close allies, and I still consider Denmark and the United States to be close allies,” he said.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also dismissed Vance’s remarks, emphasizing Denmark’s long-standing support for the US. “For many years, we have stood by the Americans in very difficult situations,” she said, referencing the country’s military contributions in Iraq and Afghanistan. “The vice president’s reference to Denmark is not accurate.”

FDA’s Top Vaccine Official, Dr. Peter Marks, Resigns, Claims ‘Truth And Transparency Are Not Desired ByThe Secretary’
John Oyewale
March 29, 2025
A U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) official who helped drive the government’s COVID-19 vaccination program resigned under pressure Friday amid a measles outbreak and accused Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of health misinformation, according to reports.
Dr. Peter Marks, the Director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, wrote he was resigning with “a heavy heart” from his role effective April 5, The New York Times reported. Claiming he was initially interested in working to address Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kennedy’s concerns about vaccines, Marks added that “it has become clear that truth and transparency are not desired by the Secretary, but rather he wishes subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies.”
Marks highlighted his work of realizing Operation Warp Speed, the first Trump administration’s effort to develop COVID-19 vaccines. He also wrote how lessons from that program influenced the control of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) in 2022 and could prove useful in the responses to other public health challenges, including the ongoing H5N1 avian influenza and measles outbreaks.

It is a constitutional mandate for us to get many Nigerians into our midst – Adebayo
March 30, 2025
Adewole Ebenezer Adebayo is the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and presidential candidate in the 2023 general election. The party appears to be the new bride of politicians in the country as notable names in the polity have been decamping to join it. In this interview, Adebayo said while the party open its doors to everyone, it is governed by processes and procedures which must be followed. Ifeoma Okeke-Korieocha brings the excerpts:
Is the Social Democratic Party (SDP) the emerging mega force or mega party ahead of 2027? Or has the SDP become the beautiful bride for disgruntled and internally-displaced politicians who are unhappy with their political parties?
Well, it is normal for people who are not satisfied with the state of affairs to try to find a remedy for them and to go to places where they think they can have a platform. So, the first set of people who are not satisfied and who have chosen the SDP are the poor masses of Nigeria because the problems in our governance impact them more than the elite when you talk of hunger, unemployment, insecurity, rising factor costs, and other social problems. So, that’s why the poor people have always been on the side of the SDP. But occasionally when you don’t address injustice, poverty and all kinds of inequity, it will start affecting the elite little by little. What the poor can endure for 40 years when it happens to the elite for 40 days, they cannot endure it. So, everything that we have been saying about President Tinubu and the APC and even about President Buhari before Tinubu came, are happening now. And many of the chief explainers and defenders have started flocking to our side when a bit of what we have been saying started happening to them. So, we cannot now reject people from coming to us. We’ve always been the one inviting every Nigerian who believes that the current system is not fair to come and join us in giving the people an alternative platform. So, if you come, you’re always welcome. If you become a Muslim at the age of 70, that’s when you start going to the mosque. If you become a Christian at the age of 80, that’s when you start going to church. But we cannot criticise people’s motives for coming. A political party is a public institution, like a church, or a mosque. When somebody spreads his mat in a mosque and wants to pray, you cannot say, where were you last night? Where have you been during your life? Let them pray. If you come to a church, you sit at the pew and say you want to kneel and pray, the pastor cannot say, wait, I saw you at the nightclub last night. He has to allow you to pray. So, coming to the mosque to pray does not mean that you will be made the Chief Imam. Coming to the church to
