Man Tears Up, Burns Quran Outside Mosque On Eid , Outside Stockholm's Central Mosque In Sweden

Jun 29, 2023

A man tore up and burned a Quran outside Stockholm's central mosque on Wednesday, an event that risks angering Turkey as Sweden bids to join NATO, after Swedish police granted permission for the protest to take place.

Police later charged the man with agitation against an ethnic or national group.

A series of demonstrations in Sweden against Islam and for Kurdish rights have offended Ankara, whose backing Sweden needs to gain entry to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Sweden sought NATO membership in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year. But alliance member Turkey has held up the process, accusing Sweden of harbouring people it considers terrorists and demanding their extradition.

Turkish Foreign Minister HakanFidan condemned the act in a tweet, adding that it was unacceptable to allow anti-Islam protests in the name of freedom of expression.

Burning of religious texts is "disrespectful and hurtful", the deputy spokesperson for the U.S. State Department told reporters in a daily briefing. "What might be legal is certainly not necessarily appropriate," Vedant Patel said.

But he continued to urge Turkey and Hungary to ratify the NATO accession protocol of Sweden without delay. "We believe Sweden has fulfilled its commitments under the trilateral memorandum."

Some 200 onlookers witnessed one of the two protesters tearing up pages of a copy of the Quran and wiping his shoes with it before putting bacon in it and setting the book on fire, while the other spoke into a megaphone.

Some of those present shouted "God is Great" in Arabic to protest against the burning, and one man was detained by police after he attempted to throw a rock.

A supporter of the protest shouted "let it burn" as the holy book caught fire.

While Swedish police have rejected several recent applications for anti-Quran demonstrations, courts have overruled those decisions, saying they infringed on freedom of speech.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told a press conference on Wednesday he would not speculate about how the protest could affect Sweden's NATO process.

"It's legal but not appropriate," he said, adding that it was up to the police to make decisions on Quran burnings.

Representatives of the mosque were disappointed by the police decision to grant permission for the protest on the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, mosque director and Imam Mahmoud Khalfi said on Wednesday.

"The mosque suggested to the police to at least divert the demonstration to another location, which is possible by law, but they chose not to do so," Khalfi said in a statement.

Up to 10,000 visitors attend Stockholm's mosque for Eid celebrations every year, according to Khalfi.

Turkey in late January suspended talks with Sweden on its NATO application after a Danish far-right politician burned a copy of the Quran near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.

‘No Ritualistic Sacrifice In Public Places, Offer Namaz Only In Eidgahs and Mosques’: Lucknow Imam Maulana Firangi Mahali Appeals

29 Jun 2023

Lucknow Eidgah Imam Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali appealed the Muslim community to offer Namaz only in Eidgahs and Mosques and not on the streets.

He also urged people to not do 'Qurbani' in public places on the occasion of Eid-Al-Adha.

"I appeal to all to offer Namaz only in Eidgahs and Mosques and not on the streets. Don't do 'Qurbani' (sacrifice of goat or sheep) in public places and don't throw the waste in public places," Firangi Mahali said as quoted by news agency ANI.

On the auspicious occasion, devotees from all over the country were seen offering their prayers. In India, Muslims wear new clothes and attend open-air prayer meetings. They may sacrifice a sheep or goat and share the meat with family members, neighbours, and the poor.

Several dishes like mutton biryani, Ghosht Haleem, Shami Kebab and mutton qorma, along with desserts such as kheer and Sheer Qorma are eaten on this day. Offering charity to the underprivileged is also considered an important part of Eid al-Adha.

Eid Al-Adha or Bakra Eid, is being celebrated today i.e. on 29 June this year. It is a holy occasion also called the 'festival of sacrifice' and is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic or lunar calendar. It marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

Every year, the date changes as it's based on the Islamic lunar calendar, which is about 11 days shorter than the Western 365-day Gregorian calendar. The festival is an occasion of joy and peace, where people celebrate with their families, let go of past grudges and make meaningful connections with one another. It is celebrated as a commemoration of Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice everything for God.

Around the world, Eid traditions and festivities vary and different countries have unique cultural approaches to this important festival

In Delhi, Security beefed up near Jama Masjid on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. DCP Central, Sanjay Kumar Sain, said: "Security of the people is our top priority and with the help of MCD, we are ensuring that the area is clean and hygienic. Around 1,000 district police personnel are present here. An outside force is also supporting us."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended Eid-al-Adha greetings to the people of the country and wished for a spirit of togetherness and harmony in the society.

On the occasion of the festival, the PM took to Twitter to say, “Greetings on Eid-ul-Adha. May this day bring happiness and prosperity to everyone. May it also uphold the spirit of togetherness and harmony in our society. Eid Mubarak!"

Muslims in Badrinath Asked To Offer Eid Prayers 40 Kilometres Away in Joshimath

29-06-23

The Uttarakhand Police have asked Muslims in Badrinath to celebrate Eid in Joshimath, which is about 40 kilometres away, PTI reported.

According to the police, there are only around 10-12 Muslims living in Badrinath. They are mostly labourers who are working on construction projects in the temple town.

The Station House Officer at the Badrinath Police Station, KC Bhatt, said that the decision had been taken after a meeting was held by priests, contractors and Muslims. He added that no one had raised any objections to the proposal.

In 2021, a controversy had erupted after some Muslim labourers offered prayers near the Badrinath temple complex during coronavirus-induced lockdown, according to The New Indian Express.

Panchayat president Praveen Dhyani told PTI that the incident was widely condemned and a case was registered. The probe is still going on, he said.

"Hezbollah" Denounces Tearing Of The Qur'an: We Call On Islamic Institutions To Take Steps To Prevent The Recurrence Of These Follies

29-06-23

NNA - In an issued statement on Thursday, Hezbollah condemned "the tearing and burning of a copy of the Holy Qur'an in front of a Stockholm mosque," considering that "the Swedish official authorities are partners and complicit in the crime, as they gave permission to the demonstrators knowing their prior intention to carry out this serious act."

The statement stressed that the recurrence of infringement of the Holy Qur'an in this country and elsewhere cannot be tolerated, deeming that the Swedish government must stop this "bad downward path" instead of hiding behind "freedom of expression and other rosy slogans".

It concluded by calling on the supreme Islamic authorities and institutions and Arab and Islamic governments to "take all appropriate steps that prompt these countries to prevent the recurrence of these follies on their land and to stop spreading the culture of hatred and spite."

Saudi Arabia Condemns Qur’an Burning by Extremist at Sweden Mosque

29 June 2023

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs voiced the Kingdom’s strong condemnation of Wednesday’s burning of a copy of the Holy Qur'an by an extremist at Stockholm Central Mosque in Sweden following Eid al-Adha prayer.

"These hateful and repeated acts cannot be accepted with any justification, as they clearly incite hatred, exclusion, and racism, and directly contradict international efforts seeking to spread the values of tolerance, moderation, and rejection of extremism”, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The statement added that similar acts only “undermine the necessary mutual respect for relations between peoples and states.”

Muslim scholars slam Swedish authorities for allowing burning of copy of Quran on Eid

28.06.2023

A group of Muslim scholars on Wednesday strongly condemned the Swedish authorities for allowing an extremist to burn a copy of the Muslim holy book, the Quran, while under the protection of Stockholm police.

The extremist's provocative act was deliberately planned to coincide with Muslims around the world celebrating Eid Al-Adha, one of the major Islamic religious festivals.

The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) described the act in a statement as "racism and savagery backed by (Swedish) official bodies."

"This is racism, not freedom, and this individual savagery backed by the official bodies must not be passed over in silence," the IUMS stated.

Early on Wednesday, a person identified as SalwanMomika burned a copy of the Quran under police protection in front of the Stockholm Mosque.

On June 12, a Swedish appeals court upheld a lower court's decision to overturn a ban on Quran burning, ruling that police had no legal grounds to prevent two Quran burning protests earlier this year.

The incident prompted strong condemnation from Türkiye, as Foreign Minister HakanFidan stated on Twitter, “I condemn the vile action in Sweden against our Holy Book, Quran, on the first day of the Eid-al-Adha!”

Quran burning protest could further delay Sweden's NATO membership

Revolutionizing the Sharia-Compliant Market

Islamic coin, the “Sharia-compliant” digital asset, has secured $200 million from ABO Digital, the digital asset investment arm of the ABO group. The latest raise brings to $400 million the total funding the crypto project has received.

According to a press release, ABO Digital’s capital injection is expected to give crypto-asset access to funding of up to $200 million as well as to ensure that the coin “has a long and stable runway.” Remarking on ABO Digital’s decision to partner with Islamic Coin, Amine Nedjai, the CEO of the digital asset investment firm, said:

ABO Digital is thrilled to collaborate with Islamic Coin as an alternative finance provider. This ambitious project, supported by a stellar team, is revolutionizing the Shariah-compliant market by introducing digitization. We are honoured to have been selected as a partner.

In addition to receiving global recognition, Islamic Coin has signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Kingdom-based DDCAP Group. This partnership, according to the press release, will result in the development of several solutions for Islamic Finance such as a Shariah-compliant Web3 alternative to the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT). A digital asset platform, central bank digital currencies, and tokenization are the other solutions that will ostensibly be developed as a direct result of the partnership.

Islamic Coin co-founder Mohammed AlKaffAlHashmi said his team is “building a game-changing financial platform that brings together ethics and the traditions of Islamic Finance.”

Some of the big-name Middle East North Africa (MENA) leaders that are reportedly backing the crypto project include the grandson of the United Arab Emirates founder Sheikh Dr. Hazza bin Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Besides the backing of the Abu Dhabi and Dubai ruling families, the endeavor is supported by Islamic finance experts.

Putin comments on lack of respect for the Quran

29-06-23

It is a crime to deliberately violate religious beliefs, the Russian leader said

Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned the burning of the Quran and vows to protect Muslims from hatred.

“[The Quran] is sacred to Muslims,” Putin said during his trip to Russia’s Muslim-majority region of Dagestan on Wednesday. “We know that in other countries they act differently, they don’t respect people’s religious feelings and say it’s not a crime [to attack one’s religious beliefs].”

Putin pointed out that deliberately offending and mocking one’s religion falls under Article 282 of the Russian Criminal Code, which deals with incitement to hatred.

“It is a crime to incite religious hatred,” the Russian leader said. “We will always follow these rules of law.”

There were several cases of activists publicly tearing pages from the Quran and setting the book on fire, especially in the Nordic countries. On Wednesday, a Swedish court allowed the Quran to be burned outside a mosque in Stockholm on Eid al-Adha, a major Muslim holiday.

The burning of the Quran in countries such as Sweden and Norway has led to protests by Muslims at home and abroad. Authorities in these states typically condemn the acts themselves, but claim they are protected under free speech laws.

Mere opposition to Sharia cannot be basis for Uniform Civil Code, says Shiv Sena (UBT)

Jun 29, 2023

The Shiv Sena (UBT) on Thursday said that mere opposition to 'Sharia' cannot be the basis for the Uniform Civil Code, asserting that UCC also means having equality in law and justice for all. Sharia is an Islamic religious law based on the teachings of the Quran and the traditional sayings of Muhammad.

In an editorial in its mouthpiece 'Saamana', the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should first respect uniform law by disqualifying 40 MLAs including Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, whose Urban Development department has taken action against 18 ex-corporators from the Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC).

Earlier this week, 18 former Congress corporators of BNCMC were disqualified from contesting any elections for the next six years for voting against their party's official mayoral candidate in 2019 and defying party whip.

"Only opposing the Sharia law of Muslims is not the basis for Uniform Civil Code. Having equality in law and justice is also Uniform Civil Code," the editorial said.

What law is it if "corrupt people, ministers, businessmen of the ruling party" are protected and leaders from opposition parties are implicated under anti-corruption statutes, it asked.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) also questioned the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) inquiry initiated by the Centre into alleged irregularities in the reconstruction expenses of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's official residence.

In an apparent reference to CM Shinde, it said the "landlords" of Maharashtra have kept two-four official bungalows and resorted to unchecked splurging.

There should also be uniform law in this case, it said.

PM Modi on Tuesday pushed for implementation of a UCC in the country and said Muslims are being instigated over the sensitive issue.

Even the Supreme Court has advocated for a UCC, but those practising vote bank politics are opposing it, said Modi and asked how the country can have two systems, touching upon an issue closely identified with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with less than a year left for the Lok Sabha polls.

PM Modi’s Pasmanda outreach a step forward, say backward class Muslim leaders

Jun 29, 2023

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pro-Pasmanda pitch seems to have triggered a churning in certain sections of the backward Muslim community’s political leadership less than a year before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The Peace Party, which had been an emerging phenomenon in several pockets of eastern Uttar Pradesh about a decade back, has welcomed the PM’s outreach.

The Peace Party had caught attention for its fairly successful intervention among the backward Muslims and won four seats in the 2012 assembly elections.

Peace Party chief Mohammad Ayub said if the BJP is serious about the political, social and educational empowerment of Pasmanda Muslims, then the PM’s appeal should be followed by some concrete actions, including an invite to the Pasmanda leadership for further discussions.

He said the Kalelkar Commission, Rangnath Mishra Commission and Sachar Committee in their reports had highlighted the social and economic backwardness of the Pasmanda Muslims. They had recommended reservation for Dalit Muslims. Along with implementing these reports, the BJP government should give political representation to the Muslims, he said.

The Peace Party enjoys influence among the weavers’ community settled in East UP.

Prime Minister had said backward Muslims had been left marginalised by those who do vote-bank politics.

“A section of their own religion has exploited Pasmanda Muslims, something that hasn’t been discussed in the country. Several generations have had to suffer. But the BJP works in the spirit of ‘Sabka Saath, SabkaVikaas,’” Modi had said in Bhopal on Tuesday.

Like the Peace Party, All India Pasmanda Muslim Mahaj has termed PM’s reach-out as a step forward in the right direction.

Its state president Wasim Raini said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the first PM who has spoken about problems faced by the Pasmanda Muslims and expressed a commitment to their welfare from a public platform. The Congress, Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party got the community’s votes but failed to give a share in political power. The Pasmanda community is looking with hope towards the BJP.”

The Pasmanda Muslims constitute 85% of the Muslim population in the state. The BJP claims that these backward Muslim communities have also been the biggest beneficiaries of the government’s various welfare schemes.

The party had also fielded a significant number of Pasmanda community members in the recently concluded urban local bodies election. Out of the 391 Muslim candidates fielded by the BJP 61 won in the local bodies’ election.

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Ulama Council spokesperson Talha Rashidi said if Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to bringing the Pasmanda Muslims into the national mainstream, the words should be reciprocated by the deeds.

Allaying the fears, Uttar Pradesh minority welfare minister Danish Azad Ansari said the victory of BJP candidates in the Rampur and Azamgarh Lok Sabha by-polls as well as alliance partner Apna Dal (S) winning the Suar assembly seat indicates the Pasmanda Muslims are supporting the BJP.

BJP Minority Cell president Basit Ali said the state government’s schemes have benefitted 4.5 crore Muslims in Uttar Pradesh. The Pasmanda votes are decisive in at least 20 Lok Sabha seats of Uttar Pradesh, he said.

Hitting out at the BJP, senior SP leader Rajendra Chaudhary said the BJP is raising the issue of Pasmanda Muslims to mislead the community and create confusion before the polls.

Bahujan Samaj Party leader Akhilesh Ambedkar said the Muslims know which party is actually committed to safeguarding their interests.

Muslims across Kerala celebrate Bakrid with traditional fervour

June 29, 2023

Thiruvananthapuram:Muslims across Kerala celebrated Bakrid (Eid-Ul- Azha) on Thursday with religious fervour and traditional gaiety but not without condemning the Centre's statements on Uniform Civil Code.

Right from early morning, the people in their traditional attire could be seen hurrying to the mosques and Eidgahs which had separate enclosures for women.

The famed Palayam Mosque located a stone’s throw from the State Secretariat here was crowded with the Imam Dr V.P. SuhaibMoulavi demanding that the Centre dump the UCC as it infringes and violates the Constitution.

“There should be no attempt to take away the religious rights of the people. The Centre should desist from this,” said the Moulavi.

Incidentally, the Muslim population in Kerala accounts for 26 per cent of the 3.30 crore state population.

PM Narendra Modi trying to fool voters, alleges Indian Union Muslim League

29.06.23

K.M. Rakesh

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Wednesday said the fact that the Prime Minister is asking for a uniform civil code (UCC) has more to do with the upcoming elections.

The party’s political advisory committee met in Kerala's Malappuram on Wednesday — a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion on rolling out the UCC — to take stock of the situation. Addressing a media conference, the committee vehemently opposed raking up the issue and reiterated its well-established position against any alteration in the country’s personal law concerning Muslims.

IUML national general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty said the prime minister who hasn’t yet uttered a word on Manipur has suddenly become vocal about the UCC.

“Since they have no achievements to show, their idea is to bring a bill in the winter session of the Parliament and convert it into a major issue quite like what they did in the Karnataka elections. A Prime Minister who hasn’t yet uttered a word on Manipur is now propping up this non-issue,” said Kunhalikutty.

He said that Modi was trying to fool the people by raking up such an issue ahead of the upcoming elections. “We will strongly oppose this,” he added.

Kerala state president of IUML, Sadiq Ali ShihabThangal, cautioned that rolling out the UCC would have very serious consequences.

“The constitution doesn’t recognise the UCC. The consequences of implementing the UCC by ignoring that fact will be very big,” Thangal said.

Lok Sabha member E.T. Mohammed Basheer squarely blamed Modi for trying to camouflage his failure in governance with such issues.

“Modi is scared. He is now flashing one more trump card upon realising that his performance has been very poor,” Basheer said, adding it won’t yield the results the Prime Minister wants.

A month later, some Muslim families return to Uttarakhand’s Purola, others put up houses for sale

Members of the minority community were forced to leave the town in Uttarakhand after right-wing groups staged protests over an alleged attempt by a Muslim man to kidnap a minor Hindu girl on May 26

June 28, 2023

Ishita Mishra

While several Muslim residents of Purola, who were forced to leave the town in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district last month following communal tensions, have returned, a few others have put up their houses for sale and vowed not to come back.

Trouble began on May 26 after an alleged attempt to abduct a 15-year-old Hindu girl by two youth, Ubaid and Jitendra Saini, who were caught by locals and booked by the police under the POCSO Act.

Though the accused were arrested the same day, the incident angered several right-wing groups, which staged protests and allegedly stuck posters asking members of the minority community to leave the town. The groups also called for a mahapanchayat on June 15, which was withdrawn at the last minute amid efforts by the administration to maintain peace.

Mohammad Saleem, who ran a garment store in the town and fled to Dehradun with his family, has put up his house in Purola for sale. He said he does not want to return as he fears for his family’s safety. “There is nothing left for us in that town,” he said.

Mohammed Zahid, the BJP minority morcha chief in Uttarkashi who also fled to Dehradun after the protests, said he has decided to shut down his businesses in Purola.

Munna Khan, a vegetable seller who is among several Muslim tenants reportedly evicted by their Hindu landlords, is desperate to get back his rent deposit of ₹3 lakh. “I had to leave in a hurry, leaving my stock of fruits and vegetables worth ₹2 lakh to rot. I am jobless now and don’t have any money to start afresh,” said Mr. Khan, who has moved to Vikas Nagar, 90 km from Purola.

Resisting pressure

However, Dharam Singh Negi, 82, the oldest practising lawyer in the town, has refused to succumb to pressure from right-wing groups to evict his Muslim tenants. “The tension was created by local traders who are scared of losing their business to Muslims who sell at cheaper rates,” he said.

Mr. Negi’s resolve has encouraged other landlords to support their Muslims tenants. “If Negi gets his shop vacated, the entire town will be free from Muslims,” said Dharshan Bharti, founder of the Devbhoomi Raksha Abhiyan.

Bale Miyan, a garment trader who belongs to one of first Muslim families to have settled in the town 45 years ago, said, ‘My grandchildren ask me why their Hindu friends have suddenly started abusing them. I have no answer for it.”

Pandit Vinod Prasad Badri, the owner of Rana restaurant, said Purola has never accepted outsiders. “We are from Tehri in Uttarakhand, but people of this town still treat us badly. We have been living here for the past 92 years. How can you expect them to allow Muslims to flourish?” he said.

However, Chand Miyan, who runs a tailoring shop, said “everything is back to normal in the town now”.

Meanwhile, the victim, a Class 8 student, who lost her parents when she was three months old, is living with her maternal uncle and aunt. She is unable to leave her home and play with her friends as she draws unwanted stares. The uncle, a government teacher, said he had given all the details of the incident in the police complaint and has nothing more to add.

According to the FIR, a villager named Ashish alerted the uncle that the girl was “about to get picked up”. Mr. Ashish then rescued the girl before the accused could get hold of her. “My niece was trapped on the pretext of marriage,” the uncle had said in his complaint.

With Mr. Ubaid awaiting trial, his brother Amir Ali, who lives in Najeebabad, Uttar Pradesh, told The Hindu that his brother had never seen the girl before. “A police officer told me that even my brother’s call records showed that he had never spoken to the girl. How come he decided to abduct her one day?” Mr. Ali said.

Sub-Inspector DeeptiJagwan, the investigating officer in the case, refused to comment on the matter.

Mr. Ali added that he had to sell the furniture shop, Bharat Furnitures, that Mr. Ubaid ran in Purola a week after the incident as he was afraid protesters would damage the stock worth lakhs in it. A fresh coat of blue paint now obscures the shop’s name-board.

Veeny Electrical and Repairs, the shop of the co-accused Mr. Saini, is shuttered and his family did not respond to calls.

Sushil Vyas, who runs a medical store next to the shops of the accused, said he had never seen the duo do anything “objectionable”.

Turkish FM condemns burning of Muslim holy book Quran in Sweden

29 June 2023

Turkish Foreign Minister HakanFidan on Wednesday condemned the burning of the Muslim holy book Quran in Sweden on the first day of Muslims' major festival of Eid al-Adha, Azernews reports, citing YeniShafak.

“I condemn the vile action in #Sweden against our Holy Book, Quran, on the first day of the Eid-al-Adha!,” Fidan wrote on Twitter.

“It is unacceptable to allow these islamophobe anti-Muslim actions under the pretext of freedom of expression,” he added.

“To turn a blind eye to such atrocious acts is to be a partner in crime,” he said.

Fidan's remarks came after Swedish authorities granted permission for a Quran-burning protest outside a mosque.

Meanwhile, Omer Celik, a spokesperson for Türkiye's Justice and Development (AK) Party said in a statement: "We condemn the Swedish authorities' approval of the application to burn the Qur'an in front of a mosque on Eid al-Adha."

"We strongly condemn the Swedish Supreme Court's stance on protecting hate crimes. Every disrespect is a crime against humanity. We will continue to fight against these cursed acts in the strongest way possible on all political and legal grounds," Celik added.

Yemeni Foreign Ministry Strongly Condemns Insulting Holy Qur'an & Holds Swedish Government Responsible

[28/June/2023]

SANA'A June 28. 2023 (Saba)- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned, in the strongest terms, the Swedish government's continued granting permits to extremists in Stockholm to offend the Holy Qur'an and Islamic sanctities.

In a statement, a copy of which was received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs considered that is a crime of racial incitement that is totally unacceptable.

It holds the Swedish government responsible for this crime, which in no way is done to freedom of opinion, expression and belief that Western countries repeat daily.

The ministry explained that irresponsible act is a provocative incitement to more than two billion Muslims in various continents of the world, and is a result of the continued spread of populist discourse in Europe based on hatred on the basis of belief, race or religion.

The statement called on governments, international, regional governmental organizations, institutions, non-governmental organizations and institutions to assume responsibility in emphasizing respect for human rights and to take deterrent measures against planners and perpetrators of violence acts and incitement against religions, as they destabilize social peace and spread hatred among peoples.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the need to adopt a binding resolution criminalizing all forms of hatred and extremism, and to hold perpetrators accountable.

Iran blasts desecration of Holy Qur’an in Sweden

June 29, 2023

Nasser Kanaani reacted to a move by Sweden to give the green light to the opponents of Islam to desecrate Holy Qur’an again.

He said it is a provocative, ill-considered and unacceptable act to pave the way for the repeated desecration of divine sanctities, especially at the same time as the holy days of the Islamic Ummah and the gathering of millions of Muslims in the World Hajj Congress.

Referring to the efforts of the international community and human rights organizations to promote respect for religions and authentic religious teachings, Kanaani said insulting the holy books is an example of violence and spreading hatred, and is contrary to the original values of human rights.

Kanaani said, “The government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran, like other Muslims and free thinkers of the world, do not tolerate such an insult and strongly condemn it.”

“The Swedish government is expected to prevent a repetition of the desecration of sanctities and seriously pay attention to the principle of responsibility and accountability in this regard,” he added.

Islamic State Leader 'Killed In Airstrike' As Special Forces Bomb Iraq Hideout

28 Jun 2023

Iraqi special forces believe they have killed the head of Islamic State in an airstrike on a terror hideout.

Specialists are carrying out tests on DNA samples from the remains of a terror suspect collected after a cave was bombed in the Hamrin Mountains in north east Iraq.

It is believed Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurayshi, who became leader in November last year may have been among five ISIS leaders blasted in the operation.

Elite commandos from the Iraqi “Golden Division” retrieved the dead bodies after warplanes hit the complex in an operation conducted recently.

Gen Abdul Wahab el-Saadi told the Daily Mirror: “Among these five men we know we killed a man who was heading the Islamic State’s media campaign.

“This man is never far away from the ISIS leadership so we believe and we hope that the Islamic State leadership has been killed.

“We cannot be sure yet but I believe DNA tests are currently being carried out. This may take some time.

“What we do know is that these five men were high up in Islamic State so we have had a positive result with that and many other operations.”

Al-Qurayshi, a veteran jihadist, took over as leader of the terror network in November last year after his predecessor Abu al-Hasan al-Hashmi al-Qurayshi was killed in Syria in October.

The latest and similarly named leader is a mystery man and it is believed there is little intelligence agencies know about his background.

He was at the time he took over, however, referred to by ISIS as “an old fighter” and commands huge respect amongst his terrorist subordinates.

British RAF planes recently carried out airstrikes on the Hamrin Mountains against Islamic State, flying in from RAF Akrotiri, in Cyprus.

But it is not known if UK Typhoon jets conducted this key mission on ISIS or whether it was conducted by an Iraqi fighter jet.

The ISIS leadership is becoming increasingly careful about security, rarely staying in one place for more than one night and spending most of their time in caves and desert hideouts.

And western spy planes are launching missions to pick up conversations over the internet and telephones in a bid to keep ISIS on the run.

It is known that whenever the terrorist network is allowed to stay in one place it may use its still large war chest to try and radicalise or instruct western-based jihadists to launch attacks.

What is ISIS?

Islamic State was born as an offshoot of al-Qaeda in Iraq, which had grown in the mid 2000s as a reaction to the US-led Iraq invasion.

It was headed by Jordanian Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, whose notoriety grew in Iraq from a number of sickening beheadings.

At some point, al-Qaeda in Iraq was disenfranchised by al-Qaeda. In 2006, al-Zarqawi was killed by American troops.

Disparate jihadist groups then came together to form ISIS – shortened from its full name, Islamic State in al-Sham, referring to large parts of the Middle East.

Sunni militant Abu Musab al-Baghdadi took over in 2010 and four years later led the network in a lightning-quick take-over of swathes of Syria and Iraq.

In 2014, al-Baghdadi announced his caliphate in Mosul, the group’s Iraqi HQ, after travelling from Raqqa, the ISIS Syria HQ.

Thousands of Iraqi police, soldiers and military cadets were slaughtered in their path and the group grew from strength to strength.

This was when British jihadists such as runaway ISIS bride Shamima Begum started travelling to Syria to join up.

The group slaughtered thousands of Yazidi and Shia across its territory and launched a campaign of horror across the region, expanding into Africa and Afghanistan.

A year later, it was plotting and carrying out attacks across Europe and coalition commanders started plotting a counter-offensive.

By 2019, air strikes and ground offensives by western-friendly Syrian Kurdish forces and Iraqi Army and Kurdish Peshmerga had removed the caliphate and fighters went to ground.

Al-Baghdadi was killed in a US special forces raid that year and the group has struggled since, with several more leaders killed.

But it remains a big threat in the Middle East, Afghanistan and parts of Africa.

Islamist group storms Istanbul Municipality’s exhibition ‘for praising LGBTI+ and socialism’

June 28 2023

An Islamist group on June 27 attempted to attack the exhibition titled “Starting from the Middle” featuring more than 400 works by 19 curators and 300 artists at “Art Istanbul Feshane” opened by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) on June 23.

A group gathered in front of the Feshane building and claimed that the exhibition included photographs containing nudity and hostility towards the police, promoted LGBTI+ propaganda, and showcased films praising socialism.

One of the leaders of the group threatened İBB Mayor Ekremİmamoğlu and said, "The exhibition is an insult to the Muslim Turkish nation. This exhibition must be removed immediately. We warn Ekrem, either he removes this exhibition or we as a nation know how to remove it."

The mayor of Eyüpsultan Municipality, where Feshane is located, said on Twitter that they expect İBB to “understand the sensitivities of society” and added, “We always respect freedom of expression. However, this freedom should not be at a point where moral boundaries that the majority of our society may find unacceptable are crossed. Everyone who claims to serve this city must remember that they are obliged to respect the values and moral principles of our society.”

The exhibition was temporarily closed while the group attempted to carry out the attack but was later reopened.

Feshane, originally established in the 18th century for the production of uniforms for Ottoman soldiers, underwent restoration works between 2018-2023 and was subsequently transformed into an art center.

Hajj service providers given leave to remain at holy sites

June 28, 2023

MAKKAH: The Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites has decided to allow companies that provide services to foreign pilgrims to remain at their locations at the holy sites for three years.

The Al-Khayyam tent project in Mina was developed after a fire broke out during Hajj season in 1997. The Saudi authorities have come up with many ideas to redevelop the area through projects in places allocated to pilgrimage service companies, which are investing in higher quality services in Arafat and Mina.

Ahmed Saleh Halabi, the Hajj and Umrah services adviser, said: “Over the years the companies would have to remove all the work that has been established at the locations of the pilgrims’ camps at the holy sites of Mina and Arafat.

“After developed tents were set up in Mina, the requests were then limited to Arafat. The majority of the work done by the companies was then removed after pilgrims would leave Arafat, despite the high costs.”

The new policy allowing the companies to remain at their locations is proving to be beneficial.

“We noticed this through the non-Arab African pilgrims’ company, which benefited from this step by removing the traditional tents in the Arafat site and setting up developed tents with outstanding international specifications. These tents are resistant to light, heat, water, fire, wear and UV,” Halabi said.

“If such tents were removed after the pilgrimage, the company will be affected by the high financial cost. Moreover, the materials used will wear off due to tying and untying them. Keeping them in place reduces the costs, preserves the tents and makes it easier to carry out maintenance.”

Maintaining a camp throughout the year would allow the companies providing services to foreign pilgrims to benefit from the location and use it as a residential place for pilgrims “where they can experience the ambiance of the Day of Arafat and remember the greatness of this place and time,” Halabi said.

Companies can also organize trips for pilgrims where they can spend a day in the camp and perform their pilgrimage rituals. The camps would be open throughout the year, with services including electricity, water, sanitation and internet.

Dr. Samir Barqah, a researcher specializing in Makkah’s history, said that keeping the camps for over three years would help improve the service, especially as they had spent millions to invest in the holy sites.

He also said that keeping the tents would contribute to developing the service industry.

Man Arrested in Attack on State Rep. After Muslim Holy Gathering

6/29/23

AMuslim Connecticut state representative was injured in an attack outside of an Eid al-Adha prayer gathering on Wednesday, police said.

A bystander chased down the male suspect and detained him before he was arrested by Hartford police, authorities confirmed to local media.

Representative Maryam Khan, the first Muslim member of the Connecticut House after being elected last year, sustained minor injuries, Farhan Memon, Connecticut chair of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), told Newsweek in a phone interview Wednesday night.

Newsweek has reached out via email to Khan and the Hartford Police Department for comment.

Officers received a call at roughly 11 a.m. Wednesday that a man had assaulted a woman. When police arrived, they found the suspect, identified as 30-year-old New Britain, Connecticut, resident Andrey Desmond, being detained by a civilian bystander, Hartford police told NBC Connecticut.

Desmond faces charges of third-degree assault, unlawful restraint, breach of peace and interfering with police, authorities said.

Khan, her three children, her sister, and a female friend had just left the Eid al-Adha gathering when the attack occurred, she told CAIR, a Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization. Eid al-Adha commemorates the Islamic Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son at God's order, according to CAIR, which adds that the holy day is celebrated with prayer, small gifts for children, distribution of meat to the needy and social gatherings.

The lawmaker said that when the suspect first approached them, he made "vulgar and obscene remarks," Khan told the advocacy group, adding that he "grabbed and hit her and threw her to the ground" outside the prayer gathering held at the XL Center in Hartford.

"When I spoke to her this afternoon, she said that her face was bruised, and her neck has started to hurt a lot," Memon told Newsweek. "And there is the emotional trauma as well, which I can't even begin to imagine, not only what happened to her but also trying to protect her kids and her sister when this man started harassing them."

Memon said Khan told him she was trying to get her kids out of harm's way.

"She didn't know what this man was going to do, whether he was armed or not," he said. "So, she basically tried to put herself between the man and the rest of her family and as a result, suffered the injuries that she did."

Memon said the local Muslim community is concerned about the lack of police presence at the prayer gathering, which he said drew thousands of people. He said security and police were "nowhere to be found" when the incident occurred, adding that Khan and her sister were screaming for help and no one aided them until the one bystander ultimately chased and detained the suspect.

Memon said that while they don't know the motive for the attack, he added, "Unfortunately, Muslims are targets."

"Maryam believes that it was her 'Muslimness' that triggered that individual and, you know, in terms of the things that he said, although they weren't overtly Islamophobic they were sort of sexual in nature," he said to Newsweek. "And she thinks that, you know, given that she was identified as a Muslim woman because she was wearing a headscarf that perhaps he thought that she was an easy target."

Hometown Mercy Mosque Embraces Diversity Saturday At Eid Halal Fest

Jun 28, 2023

HOMETOWN, IL — One of the biggest celebrations of the Islamic calendar happens this Saturday, July 1, at Hometown Mercy Mosque, 8525 S. Kostner Ave. from noon to 8 p.m. Halal Eid Fest offers delicious halal food and American fare, exciting entertainment, cultural booths, sweet treats, kids activities, kiddie rides and a petting zoo.

While most non-Muslims are familiar with Eid ul-Fitr, signifying the end of month’s fasting during Ramadan, Eid al-Adha is the second major Eid of the Islamic religion. Meaning “Feast of Sacrifice,” Eid al-Adha marks the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham to Christians and Jews) to sacrifice his son to God. Many Muslims perform extra morning prayers, visit mosques and host community gatherings. They sometimes sacrifice livestock such as a goat, cow or lamb and distribute the meat among family, friends and those in need.

“We thought it would be a nice thing to do on the first Saturday after Eid al-Adha,” said Qudri Abdallah, who works for American Halal Institute. “We thought it would be a good opportunity to meet our neighbors. People who don’t know about Islam we welcome them to come, we want positive people.

The Halal Eid Fest is hosted by the mosque and the American Halal Institute for the Muslim and non-Muslim neighbors, to “come together, embrace diversity, and rejoice in the spirit of unity, gratitude, and joy.”

Eid al-Adha takes place at the end of Hajj, which is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam. The three-day period of prayers for Muslims worldwide ended Wednesday.

“At least once in a Muslim’s lifetime, they travel to the city of Mecca,” Abdalla said. “There are 3 million Muslims from around the world currently in Mecca.”

The Hometown Mercy Mosque opened quietly in the spring in the former Our Lady of Loretto Church. The mosque hosted a meet and greet for the neighbors.

“We had so many positive interactions with people. A good number of neighbors came,” Abdalla said. “I believe in the goodness of humanity. We share so many values with Christians and Jews. Our children need good schools and safe streets to be on.”

Admission to Halal Eid Fest is free. There will be food for sale and a small charge for the rides ($2 to $6). Tickets to the petting zoo are $4. For more information, call 630-789-9191 or email info@ahliusa.net.

Minneapolis council stops rent measure with three supporters out for Muslim holiday

June 28, 2023

Updated: 5:20 p.m.

Voters in Minneapolis are not likely to see a rent control question on the ballot this fall. The city council Wednesday killed the measure while three council members were away to observe the Muslim holiday, Eid al-Adha.

A majority of the council supports a 3 percent annual residential rent cap, but with Aisha Chughtai, Jeremiah Ellison and Jamal Osman out, the council narrowly voted not to move the measure forward.

Council member Elliott Payne — a rent stabilization supporter — called the vote outrageous.

“We ought to be ashamed of ourselves as a body for not being able to govern and follow democratic norms,” Payne said.

Council member LaTrishaVetaw said rent control will harm the people it's meant to help, and the city should focus more on building housing.

"Rent control is going to stop the building of housing. And so therefore today, I'm not going to be supporting keeping this going forward," Vetaw said.

In a statement released after the vote, Ellison, Osman and Chugtai criticized the vote as going against “the spirit of inclusion Minneapolis prides itself on. Muslims have been serving on the Minneapolis City Council for a decade now, and thousands of Muslims live in our city.”

“Council Leadership had plenty of opportunity to proceed ethically today: they could have scheduled the meeting to a later date; delayed this item to the next full Council meeting, giving us enough time to still meet the ballot deadline if that would’ve been the Council’s will; or, most importantly, given that this was only an introduction and not a finished policy, the Council could have simply advanced the policy to committee the way we do all other ordinance introductions.”

The Wednesday meeting was scheduled more than a year ago to accommodate Eid, which at the time had been predicted to fall Thursday. But the date is subject to change depending on lunar observations.

In 2021, Minneapolis voters authorized the city council to regulate rent.

But a city staff report in April recommended against passing a rent control ordinance, and Mayor Jacob Frey has indicated that he would veto such a measure.

Louisville Metro Government offers Sharia-compliant small business loans for Muslim residents

June 28, 2023

Many traditional U.S. bank loans are not accessible to Muslims who follow Sharia. Louisville Metro Government is adding a new method to pay off loans through the city’s small business loan program that will comply with Islamic law.

Farhan Abdi, the executive director of the Somali Community of Louisville, said Muslims in the city who follow Sharia have struggled to obtain loans that are religiously permissible.

Under Islamic law, collecting or paying interest is forbidden. That means most American loan programs are inaccessible to many Muslims.

The majority of Somali immigrants in Louisville are Muslim, and according to Abdi, many are business owners as well. He said Muslim-owned small businesses struggle without more access to capital, and when COVID-19 hit, he saw many shutter their doors.

“I was terrified to see our small businesses closing,” Abdi said. “And that's when I started talking to the Office of Globalization, now called the Office of Immigrant Affairs.”

Three years later, Louisville Metro Government announced an optional modification to the city’s small business loan program, Metropolitan Business Development Corporation, or METCO. Rather than pay interest, recipients can pay a service fee over the life of their loan that equals what the interest would have been.

Amos Izerimana, the director of the Office for Immigrant Affairs, said the system was relatively simple to set up and expands accessibility for Muslim residents.

“It lends to really celebrating the diversity of faith that we have in our community, so that everyone has equitable access to the services and programs that the city has to offer,” Izerimana said.

Izerimana said the modification will be available to everyone, not just Muslim recipients. It’s currently available for three METCO programs: small business start up/expansion loans, project gap loans, and the business accelerator.

Officials consulted with experts of Islamic law and community members to ensure the modification was fully in compliance and would serve the needs of the community. Abdi, who was one of the advisors, said he’s already begun receiving emails from people interested in applying for the Sharia-compliant alternative.

“[The city is] creating a big market for Muslim communities, where they will have an opportunity now,” Abdi said. “I'm getting so many calls, people asking me, ‘Where can I find this loan?’”

Some Louisville nonprofits, including Jewish Family and Career Services and LHOME, already offer microloans that are Sharia-compliant. But Abdi said they weren’t always for large enough amounts.

Abdi said he knew some families who felt they had to leave Louisville because it did not have inclusive options for Muslim business owners, but he hopes changes like METCO’s will encourage new businesses and bring more families to the city.

Izerimana said the same problem also exists for mortgages and personal loans. He has spoken with various local banks about offering a Sharia-compliant option.

This significant celebration, known as the Eid Jamat, took place at the iconic Hinchliffe Stadium, where over 2,500 community members united in prayer.

"Today, we stand united in celebration as we come together to commemorate the sacred occasion of Eid Al-Adha at Hinchliffe Stadium," Sayegh said. This holiday serves as a time for spiritual reflection, gratitude, and acts of charity within the global Muslim community. Indonesia’s Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha with feasts after disease last year disrupted rituals

June 29, 2023

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Muslims across Indonesia on Thursday were celebrating Eid al-Adha, one of the biggest holidays in the Islamic calendar, with full meat-based feasts after fears of last year’s foot-and-mouth disease outbreak waned.

Eid al-Adha, known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” coincides with the final rites of the annual hajj in Saudi Arabia. It’s a joyous occasion, for which food is a hallmark with devout Muslims buying and slaughtering animals and sharing two-thirds of the meat with the poor.

Many Southeast Asia nations, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore observed Eid al-Adha on Thursday, while Muslims in other parts of the globe, including in countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Afghanistan and Nigeria, celebrated the holiday on Wednesday. It varies according to moon sightings in different parts of the world.

On Thursday, worshippers shoulder-to-shoulder joined in communal prayers in the streets of Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. Mosques flooded with devotees offering morning prayers, including in Jakarta’s Istiqlal Grand Mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia.

“Thank God, we can pray Eid al-Adha with our family and celebrate the festival without fears of the outbreak and pandemic,” said Neisya Fabiola, a Jakarta resident. “This year’s celebration is much more lively than last years.”

Eid al-Adha holiday in Indonesia is known for its lavish meat-based feasts, which are made with the meat from the sacrifice. Huge crowds filled the yards of mosques to participate in ritual animal slaughter for the festival.

Indonesia’s government has decided to extend this year’s feast of sacrifice holiday by giving an extra two days of mandatory leave before and after the Muslim festival in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country.

President Joko Widodo said the decision was geared toward spurring economic activities and tourism in the world’s largest archipelago nation.

“It would allow more time for people to travel and enjoy their holiday in a bid to spur more economic activities, particularly domestic tourism,” Widodo said last week.

Indonesia, like the rest of the world, is struggling to come out of an economic recession fueled by the pandemic with the Ukraine war and soaring energy and food prices creating complications in the recovery.

Eid al-Adha commemorates the Quranic tale of Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice Ismail as an act of obedience to God. Before he could carry out the sacrifice, God provided a ram as an offering. In the Christian and Jewish telling, Abraham is ordered to kill another son, Isaac.

Last year, a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak disrupted the ritual slaughter of animals to mark Eid al-Adha in Indonesia. But the government has worked to overcome that outbreak.

Foot-and-mouth disease is an acute, highly contagious viral disease of cloven-footed animals that is sometimes transmitted to humans. It significantly dampened the typically booming holiday trade in goats, cows and sheep in Indonesia.

The disease returned to Indonesia last year, which had been outbreak-free for 32 years. The government, struggling to cope, set up a task force and ordered the culling of tens thousands infected livestock.

The trend of active cases was observed to have decreased with zero new cases in the recent weeks, with the remaining active cases of 4,682 as of Monday, out of a total of 630,706 cases largely on the most populated islands of Java and Sumatra, according to data from the National FMD Task Force.

Fans swarm PM Anwar at Putrajaya mosque after Aidiladha prayers

By R. Loheswar

Thursday, 29 Jun 2023

PUTRAJAYA, June 29 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim drew a large crowd of people as he performed his Hari Raya Aidiladha prayers at Masjid Putra here today.

Anwar arrived around 8.30am to thousands of Muslims worshippers waiting, some of whom were already there as early as 7.30am.

He was greeted with shouts of “Selamat Hari Raya Datuk Seri”, “Reformasi” and “Hidup Anwar” as soon as he arrived at the mosque entrance, to which he reciprocated and this elicited louder calls from the masses.

After his prayers, which took about 40 minutes, Anwar mingled with the Muslim worshippers in the mosque.

He appeared in a jovial mood, smiling and chatting with old friends and other members of the public who went up to shake his hand.

He then walked slowly outside the mosque where thousands had gathered at the entrance, impeding the exit.

As he approached his car, many well-wishers shouted his name, hoping to get a picture with the MP for Tambun.

Anwar obliged some, and posed for pictures before leaving the mosque at around 9.20am.

Anwar was accompanied by his wife and former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Also spotted at the Putra Mosque today was fugitive Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik, who is wanted in India for allegedly spreading religious hatred and money laundering.

The Mumbai-born was seen with a small entourage leaving the mosque just before Anwar.

Aidiladha or the Feast of Sacrifice, is celebrated by Muslims all over the world as a major holiday for a period of three to four days.

The majority of Muslims will attend the special prayers held at different major mosques and Islamic centres.

Amid Growing Unemployment in Afghanistan, Baradar Calles it ‘Foreign Porpaganda’

June 28, 2023

Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs of Afghanistan Abdul Ghani Baradar on Wednesday on the occasion of Eid al-Adha prayer said there is enough work in Afghanistan, adding foreigners fuel the rumor of unemployment.

While speaking at the presidential palace (Arg) Abdul Ghani Baradar said that perhaps the employment situation in the country is not favorable, however, the rumors spread by foreign media is not true either.

He further added that the Taliban-run administration has initiated economic projects aimed at creating employment opportunities for the people of Afghanistan. Referring to Salang Pass highway, Baradar said, the construction work of the highway will commence after Eid.

Furthermore, he added that economic development projects are underway at different levels throughout Afghanistan.

Baradar called on Afghan youths instead of leaving the country and drowning in oceans, they could remain in Afghanistan and work towards the development of the country.

In his remarks, he also highlighted the decreasing level of the amount of water in the capital Kabul and described the situation as unfortunate for ordinary citizens. He encouraged industrialists and factory owners to supply water by tankers from the rivers.

Taliban officials try to represent Afghanistan’s situation promising while international aid organizations report dire poverty and hunger millions of Afghans are plagued with.

Over 74,000 Afghan Migrants Return Home From Iran in a Month

June 28, 2023

Taliban’s provincial officials at the Refugees and Repatriation Department of western Nimroz province said that more than 74,000 Afghan migrants have returned to the country from Iran through the Silk Road crossing point in the past month.

Mawlavi Abdullah Ryaz, the provincial head of Refugees and Repatriation of Nimroz province told Bakhtar news agency that at least 74, 360 people including 1,106 families and 69,259 individuals have returned to the country from Iran over the past couple of weeks.

Meanwhile, hundreds of Afghan refugees have returned to the country from Pakistan over the past couple of days, local sources said.

According to official sources, 230 Afghan families returned from Pakistan through the Torkham crossing point over the past couple of days.

The repatriation of Afghan refugees from Iran and Pakistan has unprecedentedly increased in the recent past – mainly linked to the harassment, arbitrary detention and deportation of undocumented Afghan nationals in the host countries.

Following the collapse of the former Afghan government in August 2021, thousands of vulnerable Afghan families moved to the neighboring countries of Iran and Pakistan fearing death threats and persecution by the Taliban.

Now, these Afghan refugees are plagued with serious challenges in the host countries including arbitrary detention, mistreatment, imprisonment and forceful deportation.

Military still fulfilling legal formalities for May 9 trials

June 29, 2023

ISLAMABAD: Though the Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing of petitions challenging the trials of civilians in military courts, the army’s legal wing is still in the process of completing codal formalities before formal proceedings against the 102 suspects in their custody can begin, Dawn has learnt.

Informed sources said that the military’s legal department has gathered evidence against those in custody, while it is building cases against those still at large.

Earlier this week, Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Atta Bandial had expressed the hope that the military would not begin legal proceedings against those in its custody until the court had disposed of the petitions — assailing military trials of civilians — that are currently pending before the CJP-led bench.

However, on the same day, the military’s chief spokesperson confirmed custody of 102 suspects, saying they would be tried under sections 3, 7, and 9 of the Official Secrets Act read with Section 2(1)(d) of the Pakistan Army Act.

Ahmer Bilal Soofi, a noted legal expert, told Dawn that in order to legitimise the trials of civilians under the Pakistan Army Act, the Judge Advocate General (JAG) branch has to fulfill certain requirements.

In the Supreme Court, Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan said the cases against the detained civilians were still at the investigation stage, and also assured the bench that no accused would be charged with the commission of any offence that attracts either capital punishment or a lengthy sentence.

He also argued that the Pakistan Army Act Rules 1954 state that accused persons are to be provided copies of prosecution evidence and granted time to examine it and engage counsel after the completion of investigations.

Since this stage has not arrived yet, therefore no military trial of any detained civilian has so far commenced, sources said.

Relevant sections

One of the tasks before the JAG branch is to decide which sections will apply to which suspect.

Sources told Dawn that during the events of May 9, violent protesters not only trespassed into prohibited areas, but also damaged and looted military property in addition to desecrating monuments.

They claimed that these actions made such persons liable to be tried under the Official Secrets Act, and consequently the army act.

Sections 3 and 3A of the secrets act deal with “restriction against photographs, sketches, etc., of prohibited and notified areas”. Section 7 is about “interfering with officers of the police or members of the armed forces of Pakistan, while Section 9 is related to “Attempts, incitements, etc.”

Section 2(1)(d) of the Pakistan Army Act states: “persons not otherwise subject to this Act who are accused of seducing or attempting to seduce any person subject to this Act from his duty or allegiance to government, or having committed, in relation to any work of defence, arsenal, naval, military or air force establishment or station, ship or aircraft or otherwise in relation to the naval, military or air force affairs of Pakistan” can be tried under the secrets act.

So, the Official Secrets Act of 1923 actually empowers the military to try civilians under the army act.

No precedent in civil courts

However, human rights groups insist that under previous military regimes - and even under some democratic governments - military courts have been used to silence opponents’ voices. This is why several quarters are calling for the cases to be tried in established courts.

But legal experts Dawn spoke to said that civilian courts had perhaps never tried cases under this law, as such matters have been the exclusive domain of military courts in the past.

A former judge of Islamabad High Court (IHC) with vast experience in the district judiciary as well, said that civilians had never been tried for breaching official secrets in an established court.

He said that while there was a procedure for conducting trials under this act in civilian court – which involved the government notifying a judge or magistrate as the presiding officer – but to the best of his knowledge, the government had never issued any notifications to constitute such a court.

Advocate Raja Inam Ameen Minhas, a criminal law expert, told Dawn that in his three decades of legal practice, he had never even read about a case registered with the Federal Investigation Agency, police, or other law enforcement agency, under the Official Secrets Act.

But there are a number of instances on record when civilians have been tried by the military for breaching national secrets.

During his press conference on June 26, Maj-Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry noted that the army act had been part of the legal framework for several decades, and that hundreds of cases have been decided under this law.

This is true; under the previous PTI government alone, at least 25 civilians were court-martialed for violating the secrets act. But these were hardly transparent and, according to a lawyer familiar with proceedings, violated a good number of the suspects’ fundamental rights.

“The suspects were taken into custody and put on trial in secret. Out of them, three were awarded the death sentence,” retired Lt-Col Inamur Rahim told Dawn.

A former JAG official, Advocate Rahim was the counsel in over a dozen such cases.

Talking to Dawn, he said that in all these cases, articles 4, 9, 10 and 10A of the Constitution were violated as neither their counsel nor their families were intimated about the suspects’ arrest and trial.

Journalist Idrees Khattak and Hassan Askree, the son of a retired two-star general, were among those convicted in such a manner.

PTI’s Ali Mohammad Khan remanded to jail in corruption case

June 29, 2023

MARDAN: Central leader of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Ali Mohammad Khan was remanded in judicial custody on Wednesday after a magistrate rejected the plea of anti-corruption establishment (ACE) officials for seeking his 14-day physical remand.

The former minister was arrested for the sixth time on Tuesday in yet another corruption case shortly after being released by a special court from Mardan jail.

On Wednesday when officials produced him before the judicial magistrate to seek physical remand, the court rejected the request and sent the PTO leader to prison on judicial remand. The PTI leader was taken into custody by ACE officials in a case registered against him on June 26, only four days ago the government had informed Peshawar High Court that there was no case against him.

According to the fresh allegations, the former minister of state and several other former lawmakers committed irregularities by awarding contracts in developmental schemes to their ‘favorites’.

The PTI central leader was earlier granted bail by senior special judge of the anti-corruption court Babar Ali Khan on surety bonds of Rs80,000 in a case against him and other former legislators of the party from Mardanfor ‘illegal appointments’ in the fisheries department.

“Ali Mohammad, who is in Mardan prison, was again taken into custody by the anti-corruption officials after he was released in accordance with the order of the court,” his counsel Ali Zaman said, adding that the government had made a mockery of the law.

Four days ago the government had informed the PHC about no other case pending against his client, yet the new case was registered after the ACE realized he would be released for ‘want of evidence’.

Earlier in May, Ali Mohammad was arrested in Islamabad under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance on the order of Islamabad’s deputy commissioner. He was set free on Islamabad High Court’s order before being re-arrested on order of Rawalpindi’s deputy commissioner under the MPO. Later, he was arrested again on Peshawar deputy commissioner’s order under the MPO and then by the Mardan counterterrorism department of police in connection with the May 9 violence case.

PM Shehbaz urges special care for flood-hit people as nation celebrates Eidul Azha

June 29, 2023

As the nation celebrates Eidul Azha with traditional zeal and fervour today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged special care for the flood-affected people and vowed to utilise all measures to provide public relief.

The day started with special prayers held at mosques, Eidgahs, and grounds across the country for the progress and security of the country, state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported.

Acting President Sadiq Sanjarani — who has assumed the role after President Arif Alvi went on Haj — offered the Eid prayers at the PAF Airbase Samungli Mosque in Quetta. He prayed for the prosperity of the country.

In his message, Acting President Sanjrani said the spirit of sacrifice on Eidul Azha had a universal status and no nation in the world could progress unless it implemented the spirit of sacrifice.

“We should keep all our interests, preferences and prejudices behind us. Now is the time to overcome all our political affiliations and adopt a common plan of action for the development and prosperity of the country,” he stressed, recalling that Pakistan came into being after endless sacrifices.

“On this day, we must remember the creators, martyrs, and protectors of the homeland who sacrificed their lives for the great cause of protection, development, and uplifting of the beloved country,” Sanjrani added.

Meanwhile, PM Shehbaz offered Eid prayers at his Model Town residence in Lahore.

In his message, which was released by the Prime Minister’s Office, the premier felicitated the nation on the auspicious occasion and urged the people to take special care of those who were rendered homeless during last year’s floods.

PM Shehbaz said he was cognisant of the fact that Pakistan had been facing price hikes triggered by external issues in the shape of inflation and recession. However, the government was utilising all the resources to provide relief to the public, he vowed.

PM Shehbaz further said that sacrifice was not just the name of slaughtering an animal, but its purpose was to “sacrifice one’s life in the way of Allah to achieve higher goals”.

“It is a matter of fact that no nation in the world can progress unless it has the spirit of sacrifice,” he added.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement that the armed forces, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, and the Services Chiefs wished a very happy Eidul Azha to fellow Pakistanis.

“Eidul Azha gives us a message of peace, unity, fraternity, and selfless sacrifice for humanity,” the military’s media wing said.

It also urged the people to remember and honour the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the motherland. “They will forever be etched in our hearts,” the ISPR added.

Meanwhile, PPP Chairman Asif Ali Zardari offered Eid prayers alongside parliamentarians in Nawabshah. In a tweet, the PPP Media Cell said Zardari prayed for the strength of democracy and the well-being of the citizens.

Separately, talking to reporters after Eid prayers in Multan, PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that as a nation, “we should come together and face both economic and security challenges together”.

Shehbaz, COAS in Parachinar

In a statement released earlier in the day, the PMO said the prime minister arrived in Parachinar along with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir to celebrate Eid with soldiers performing duties along the border.

The premier was accompanied by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.

According to the press release, PM Shehbaz and the army chief greeted the men in uniform on the festive occasion and boosted their morale through interaction.

PM felicitates Turkiye, Qatar heads

A day earlier, the prime minister also spoke to President of Turkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on phone and felicitated the governments and the people of both countries on the auspicious occasion of Eidul Azha.

Reciprocating the prime minister’s sentiments, President Erdogan and Qatar’s emir extended warm Eid greetings to the people of Pakistan.

The leaders agreed that the seventh session of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) to be held in Islamabad, would provide a leadership-driven and forward-oriented impetus to further strengthen the close fraternal relations between the three countries, especially in the economic domain.

“Pakistan-Turkiye relationship is underpinned by abiding bonds of religion, culture and history. Regular leadership level contact remains a defining feature of this strategic partnership,” PM Sharif said.

Also, Sheikh Tamim and Shehbaz Sharif discussed regional and international issues. The emir of Qatar expressed gratitude to PM Sharif for felicitating him on Eid.

Corruption, Bad Governance Against Allah’s Injunction — Convener YeswefitMovementTells Nigerians

June 29, 2023

Convener YesWeFit Movement, Dr Thomas-Wilson Ikubese, has felicitated the Muslim community as they celebrate Eid-el-Kabir.

However, Dr. Ikubese has used the medium to enjoin both Muslim and non-Muslim faithful to emulate the prophet Ibrahim by obeying the teachings of Allah, saying that Nigerians, especially those holding public offices, must avoid corruption and bad governance.

He said when people engage in corrupt act and bad governance, that they are going against the injunctions of Allah.

The former presidential aspirant said this in an Eid-el-Kabir message to all Muslim faithful in the world who are celebrating Eid.

According to him, both the leaders and the led, including all public office holders and all Nigerians must join hands to build a Nigeria that everyone would be proud of.

His statement reads thus:

“I wish all Muslim faithfuls a happy Eid El Kabir celebration.

This unique festival which stems from Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience to the instruction of Allah serves as a lesson to us all.

Allah told Prophet Ibrahim to use his only son, Ismail as a sacrifice to Him.

But just as he was about doing so, Allah interrupted the process and provided a ram instead for the sacrifice.

To our politicians, Allah does not want you to sacrifice the citizens you are elected to protect.

But when you embezzle public funds, you’re sacrificing your citizens because many of them will die of things that ought not to take their lives.

To the judiciary, when you collect financial inducements and pervert the course of justice, you’re working against the injunction of Allah, and you will end up sacrificing Ismail, instead of the ram.

To the legislators, when you selfishly make laws that favour a few privileged people, instead of the greater majority, you’re going against the sacrificial tenets of this festival.

To the law enforcement agencies, when you collect gratifications and look away when criminality is perpetuated, you’re sacrificing Ismail instead of Allah’s ram provision.

To the citizens, when you fail to play your civic responsibilities, you’re acting in disobedience to the will of Allah.

We must all join hands together and build a nation we can all be proud of, rather than point accusing fingers at others, for whenever we act contrary to Allah’s injunctions, we end up mortgaging our destinies!”

Sallah: Peter Obi Shows Love to Muslims, Doles Out Millions of Naira in Anambra

June 29, 2023

Peter Obi has presented cheques worth millions of naira to the Muslim communities in Anambra state.

The Labour Party presidential candidate in the last presidential election presented the cheque fulfilling his promise to help renovate Awka and Onitsha mosques.

Obi also celebrated with the Anambra Muslims community in Onitsha during this year’s Eid-el-Kabir.

Politics Nigeria reports that during Obi’s visit to Awka and Onitsha Muslim communities in April, he promised to support them in renovating their places of worship, which was no longer in good condition.

On Wednesday, the former Anambra state governor made the donations when he played host to leaders of the Anambra Muslim Community in Anambra’s capital, Akwa.

At the event, Obi said: “We are all Nigerians, and we will continue to live as one irrespective of our religious or political beliefs.

“What we owe each other is brotherly love and care, so we can live in peace and unity as a nation. We have no other nation but Nigeria, and we must make it work.

“I know that times are difficult for everybody in the country, but if we rise above our religious, political and ethnic divisions, we will be able to surmount our challenges in unity.

“We will not give up on our nation, but continue to work for a New Nigeria that will be beneficial to every Nigerian.”

Safety concerns as Muslim faithful besiege Lagos jetties for Eid-el-Kabir

June 29, 2023

There are mounting concerns around most waterways jetties in Lagos State following the influx of Muslim faithful travelling home for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration holding this week across the country.

Investigations by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that many jetties, both manned and unmanned, are currently witnessing a surge in the number of people travelling by waterways to their villages located along the riverine routes of the state to celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir with their families.

When Nigerian Tribune got to the Abule-Ado jetty located near Ojo area of Lagos State, many boats carrying full load of passengers were seen crisscrossing the length of the Lagos lagoon to and fro the Badagry end of the lagoon.

While many had life jackets on, the numbers of passengers on each boat raised concerns from some boat operators at the Abule-Ado jetty.

Patrick Manaseh, a boat operator who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune, said there has been an increase in the number of passengers moving on the waterways since Sunday.

Manaseh said, “There is a surge in the number of people travelling via the Lagos waterways in recent days. I think it is not unconnected with the Eid-el-Kabir celebration coming up this week. Many people who have villages in riverine areas are moving home to celebrate with their families.

“However, the manner in which passenger boats are fully loaded with passengers is raising concerns among some of us. I am not saying some of the boats are overloaded, but I hope things don’t get out of hand in the coming days.

“Again, many boats are taking off from jetties that are not fully manned. Many jetties litter the Badagry and Ikorodu stretch of the Lagos lagoon that we don’t have physical presence of the regulatory agencies there.

“I cannot beat my chest and say some boats won’t be leaving at night for these trips in the coming days. The regulatory agencies need to be on top of their game in the next one week.

“I am saying one week because the same people that are travelling for the Eid-el-Kabir will come back to main-town Lagos after the festivity. Many that are leaving this week won’t come back to Lagos until the coming weekend.

“So, we expect the surge in passenger traffic at many jetties to remain all through this week. The regulatory agencies – National Inland Waterway Authority (NIWA) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) – need to be on their toes all through this week.”
