Bomb-Making Materials, An Open Quran, And Children's Toys: Inside New Orleans Terror Attacker Shamsud-Din Jabbar's Home

Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old New Orleans terrorist who pledged allegiance to Isis, left behind a chilling scene in his North Houston trailer home—complete with bomb-making materials, a Quran open to a passage glorifying violence, and signs of a life spiraling into chaos.

On New Year’s Day, Jabbar drove a rented Ford F-150 Lightning into the heart of Bourbon Street, mowing down revelers at 3 am in a gruesome rampage. Fourteen people were killed, dozens injured, and Jabbar himself died in a shootout with police. Federal investigators have ruled it an act of terrorism.

A Quran open to violence

The video posted by the New York Post showed a workbench in Jabbar’s bedroom set up for assembling explosives. Nearby, his Quran stood prominently atop a bookshelf, opened to Verse 9:111, which reads: “They fight in Allah’s cause, and slay and are slain; a promise binding…” The verse, widely interpreted as a call to violence by extremist ideologies, cast a haunting shadow over his already sinister acts.

This passage, investigators believe, fueled Jabbar’s radicalization. It was the same ideology he embraced in chilling videos posted online minutes before his attack, where he declared his allegiance to Isis and issued threats, including to his own family.

A chaotic scene at home

The aftermath of the FBI raid on Jabbar’s trailer painted a picture of a man living on the edge. The home was in disarray, with the front door kicked down, cabinets flung open, and furniture overturned.

His main bedroom held a keffiyeh in the closet and bomb-making tools on the workbench—ominous signs of his dark turn. Despite the mess, the home seemed eerily as if he had just left, with clothes and belongings scattered about.

A house of red flags

Jabbar’s trailer home painted a grim portrait of his descent into extremism. Chemical residues and bottles filled the property, with an inventory left behind by FBI agents listing compounds commonly used in bomb-making. A rolled-up prayer rug and numerous Islamic books further hinted at his radicalization.

Yet, the home also bore traces of his fragmented personal life. A back bedroom was cluttered with children’s toys and bunk beds—remnants of his role as a father to two daughters, aged 15 and 20.

Hours before his attack, Jabbar told neighbors he was leaving for New Orleans for a new IT job. The lie was soon laid bare as the same white truck he drove off in became his weapon of mass destruction.

A veteran’s downfall

Once an Army staff sergeant, Jabbar served ten years, including deployments to Afghanistan from 2009 to 2019. But after leaving active duty in 2015 and the reserves in 2020, his life unraveled. Financial woes from two divorces, a failed real estate career, and struggles as an IT specialist marked his civilian years.

Despite his quiet demeanor, Jabbar’s radicalization had alarming roots. In videos posted before his attack, he not only declared loyalty to Isis but also threatened to murder his own family. His younger brother, Abdur Jabbar, expressed shock: “This is more some type of radicalization, not religion. He was a sweetheart really, a nice guy, a friend, really smart, caring.”

Amid Claims Of Temple Inside Ajmer Dargah, PM Modi Presents 'Chadar' To Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti's Shrine

-----

03 Jan 2025

Amid claims by the Hindu Sena that a Shiva temple existed on the site of Ajmer Dargah, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday presented a 'chadar' to the shrine of sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.

Sharing a picture of him presenting the 'chadar' to Minorities Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to be offered on his behalf at the shrine on the occasion of 'Urs', PM Modi wrote on X, "Greetings on the Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. May this occasion bring happiness and peace into everyone's lives."

Sharing a picture of Modi giving a chadar to him and BJP's minority morcha president Jamal Siddiqui, Rijiju said on X, "This gesture reflects his deep respect for India's rich spiritual heritage and the enduring message of harmony and compassion."

'Urs' is held annually at the shrine of the sufi saint to commemorate his death anniversary.

Though PM Modi has been following the tradition of presenting the 'chadar' to Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti's shrine, his party has come under fire recently for making claims regarding the ownership of the structure.

Vishnu Gupta, the national president of Hindu Sena, had approached a Rajasthan court seeking to declare the Ajmer Dargah as a Shiv temple. The court, in November last year, agreed to hear the matter and directed summon notices to be issued to the Dargah Committee, the Ministry of Minority Affairs, and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Opposition parties including the Congress has criticised the BJP for making claims on the dargah.

Former Rajasthan chief minister and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot had pointed out that when PM Modi offered 'chadar' at the Ajmer Dargah members of his party were "going to court and creating confusion."

“People from all over the country offer prayers at the Ajmer Dargah... Even all the Prime Ministers, including PM Modi, offer 'chadar' at the Ajmer Dargah. They are offering 'chadar,' yet members of their party are going to court and creating confusion. What kind of message is being spread? Where there is unrest, there can't be development,” he asked.

Nigerian Islamic ScholarsUrged Clerics To Deepen Their Knowledge Before Issuing Fatwa

Nigerian Islamic Scholars

---

January 3, 2025

Islamic Scholars and other stakeholders have urged clerics to deepen their knowledge before stating their position on any Islamic matters.

The scholars made the call at the 16th annual Islamic International Conference organized by Daaru Naim Academy for Sharia Science of Nigeria held in Lagos with the theme, “The Jurisprudence of Fatwa and its relationship with Maqasid-based Fiqh”.

The scholars urged Muslim clerics to ensure that their messages are in line with the details of the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad which also includes peaceful coexistence.

Speaking at the event, the Conference Supervisor and Director General, Daaru Naim Academy for Sharia Science of Nigeria, Sheikh Imran Abdulmajeed Eleha said that the emergence of clerics misleading their followers with their Fatwa is a major challenge and all hands must be on the desk to reduce such trends.

“We saw the need to address the issue around fatwa at this year’s conference and to also curb misinformation about Sharia. It is also to ensure that Fatwa is aligned with fundamental objectives of sharia,” he stated.

Undersecretary, Minister for Islamic Affairs, Saudi Arabia, Dr. Awwad bin Sabti Al-Anazi; said Prophet Muhammad emphasized the importance of knowledge.

He urged clerics to seek knowledge to avoid passing wrong information to people, adding that in his country, the government is concerned about Fatwa and scholars are regulated to avoid misinformation and incorrect fatwa.

“The responsibility of keeping the fatwa within the limit allowed by Islam is a formal responsibility between the governments and the governed. In Saudi Arabia, there is a laid own principle of how Fatwa should be conducted and given. A body was established with the full authority of the government known as The Committee of Crown Scholars. Also, there is a grand Mufti from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and it is by law the body that has the right to give fatwa, especially on issues that have general implications.”

Dr. Bilal ElHallak from the United States said fatwa should not be based on personal opinions and misinterpretation around it should be tackled as quickly as possible by eminent scholars to reduce the spread.

Prof. Abdulrazzaq Abdulmajeed Alaro, Islamic Law Department, University of Ilorin; explained that the danger inherent in allowing everybody to become a mufti to give a fatwa is one of the reasons for misinformation today.

“When we talk of fatwa, it is something that is critical to the practice of the religion because it means when people are confused or lack knowledge of what to do, they need someone to tell them, this is what is the position of Islam but unfortunately a lot of people are giving fatwa without paying attention to the fundamental objectives of Islam itself.”

Delegates at the conference came from Saudi Arabia, United States, Oman, Algeria, Chad, Cote D’Ivoire, Congo, Republic of Benin, Burkina Faso, including Nigeria.

‘Alarming’ Rise In Deviant Islamic Practices In Malysia: Department Of Quran And Sunnah Studies

Harith Kamal

03-01- 2025

PETALING JAYA: An academic has described the rise of deviant Islamic practices in Malaysia as “alarming” and has called for stronger action from the authorities to address the issue.

International Islamic University Malaysia Department of Quran and Sunnah Studies assistant professor Dr Abu Hafiz Salleh Hudin was commenting on a recent online video showing a group in Danau Kota, Setapak, engaging in zikir (a remembrance prayer) at a cemetery.

The video showed the prayer being performed in an unusually loud and unconventional manner, sparking concern among the Muslim community.

Abu Hafiz noted that this was not the first incident of its kind, attributing such occurrences to a lack of adherence to the true teachings of Islam.

“There have been numerous cases like this in the past. True Islamic teachings are derived from the Quran and Sunnah, which are the two primary sources of guidance for Muslims,” he said.

“If we examine it closely, we will find no evidence or practices from the Prophet Muhammad or his companions that align with such deviations during their time,” he added.

Abu Hafiz asserted that many Muslims justify deviant practices by misinterpreting the Quran and Sunnah, describing this as the root of the problem.

Federal Territories deputy mufti Sahibus Samahah Jamali Mohd Adnan said the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) is investigating the zikir incident.

He also stressed the importance of proper etiquette on being at cemeteries, urging visitors to avoid actions that might cause confusion, misunderstanding or affronts to Islam.

“Islam teaches its followers to uphold respect, etiquette and rules, including when visiting burial grounds, as a sign of respect for the resting places of Muslim remains,” he said.

Abu Hafiz criticised the practices seen in the video as inappropriate, warning that deviant teachings could have significant and harmful effects on Islam.

“Misunderstanding leads people away from true teachings and they begin to accept deviations as the mainstream. This creates confusion as the actual teachings of Islam may then be perceived as deviant,” he said.

He emphasised the need for the authorities to ensure understanding of Islamic teachings is firmly rooted in the Quran and Sunnah.

“If the authorities are ineffective in addressing such issues, problems will arise, necessitating stronger enforcement. The authorities must review and tackle deviant or borderline-deviant teachings in society. Without such measures, the situation will deteriorate,” he said.

Abu Hafiz also urged caution among Muslims, stressing that addressing the root causes of deviant teachings is essential.

“Islamic education plays a crucial role, but it cannot operate in isolation. As an educator, I can teach my students and create awareness, but my influence is limited.

“I lack the jurisdiction to take further action. Therefore, the responsibility lies with the authorities. If they fail to act decisively, we will continue to witness cases like the cemetery incident and the spread of deviant practices across the country.”

On Dec 29, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar urged all parties to refrain from speculating on the incident.

He advised the public to allow Islamic religious authorities to handle the matter and confirmed that Jawi has been instructed to conduct a thorough investigation.

Pakistan Begins Two-Year UNSC Term, With Commitment To Kashmir, Afghanistan Peace

UN Security Council

----

By Web Desk

January 03, 2025

Pakistan's Alternate Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has reaffirmed that the country's stance on Kashmir is based on UN resolutions, while stressing the importance of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan as vital for ensuring regional harmony.

Earlier today, envoy Iftikhar installed the national flag in front of the UN Security Council chamber on Thursday, as Pakistan began its eighth term for two years (2025-26) as a non-permanent member of the 15-member body.

As part of the joining ceremony, flags of the five new incoming non-permanent members — Pakistan, along with Denmark, Greece, Panama and Somalia — were installed at the UNSC's stakeout at UN Headquarters in New York.

The new members replaced Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland whose terms ended on December 31, 2024.

In his brief remarks, he said that Pakistan will continue to be guided by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter including maintenance of international peace and security and the development of friendly relations among nations based on the principle of equal rights and self-determination.

“Pakistan will always remain a strong voice for peoples under foreign occupation and oppression and for the realisation of their right to self-determination,” Ambassador Ahmad said.

Pakistan, he said, was convinced that cooperative multilateralism – with the UN at its core – was the best way of tackling today’s multifaceted challenges.

“We need to earnestly address the root causes of long-standing and new conflicts, prioritise dialogue and diplomacy, and support confidence building at regional and global levels – to reduce tensions, arrest the arms race, and enable an environment conducive to peace, stability and development,” the Pakistani envoy said.

Pakistan, he said, will partner with fellow members to actively pursue just and peaceful solutions to the issues on the Council’s agenda, and strive to make optimal use of the tools at our disposal – from conflict prevention to peacekeeping to peacebuilding – to achieve durable peace.

“Our success lies in upholding the UN Charter and international law under all circumstances, and in ensuring the effective implementation of the Security Council’s own decisions,” Ambassador Ahmad said.

“Never forgetting our solemn duty towards the millions of men, women and children suffering in conflicts, Pakistan is assuming this responsibility, fully resolved to our collective endeavour for a more peaceful and secure world.”

Pakistan will preside over the 15-member Council in July when it assumes its presidency according to the alphabetical rotation of the member states’ official names. This will allow Islamabad to set the Security Council’s agenda.

In addition to this, Pakistan will get a seat on the Islamic State (ISIS) and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee, which is responsible for designating individuals and groups as terrorists and imposing sanctions.

The Security Council has 15 members, five of which – Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States – are permanent ones. The 10 non-permanent seats of the Council are allocated by geographic region, with five replaced each year.

The Security Council is considered to be the most powerful body of the United Nations. The council, which is tasked to maintain international peace and security, can make legally binding decisions and has the power to impose sanctions and authorise the use of force against states.

The tradition of the flag installation ceremony was introduced by Kazakhstan in 2018.

Kazakhstan’s permanent representative, Kairat Umarov, who presided over the ceremony, voiced confidence that the five new council members will bring much depth and focus to the pressing issues of global peace and security.

“As we begin a new year, it is clear that the global situation continues to be marked by numerous challenges and crisis, from ongoing conflicts and humanitarian calamities to the negative impacts of climate change and the pandemic.”

Speaking to Geo News later, Iftikhar said: "The overall security situation in Pakistan has significantly improved."

He also highlighted the country's positive economic indicators, underscoring the incumbent government’s commitment to progress and stability.

"We have undertaken substantial efforts to combat terrorism," he noted, acknowledging that the menace of terrorism has resurged in the country recently.

Addressing the Afghanistan issue, the envoy affirmed that the issue remains a key item on the UN Security Council’s permanent agenda. "We continue discussions on Afghanistan at the multilateral and bilateral levels," he remarked, adding, "Our position is crystal clear—we want a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, as regional peace is directly tied to stability there."

He highlighted that Pakistan is a strong country, and our nation stands united, expressing confidence that the government and people remain steadfast in their mission to eliminate terrorism.

Reflecting on his role at the UN, he remarked, "It is a great honour to represent Pakistan, and our experienced team will meet the expectations of the government and the nation."

Islamic State’s brutal ideology still inspires attacks worldwide

By Nabih Bulos and Laura King

Jan. 2, 2025

The attacker in the deadly New Year’s truck-ramming strike on revelers in New Orleans’ French Quarter had a black Islamic State flag, the FBI says.

Law enforcement says it believes the assailant acted alone, killing at least 15 people in what they are investigating as a terrorist attack. Authorities are also scrambling to establish what inspiration he might have drawn from the Sunni Muslim extremist group, which blazed into the world’s consciousness more than a decade ago.

By 2014, Islamic State had seized control of large swaths of Iraq and Syria. Under the group’s harsh interpretation of Islam, thousands in the region, including minorities such as Yazidis, were persecuted, sexually enslaved and killed. Islamic State’s deadly reach spread into Europe and beyond, with Islamic State operatives carrying out audacious bombings and shootings in capitals, including Paris and Brussels.

A U.S.-led military coalition crushed Islamic State’s self-declared caliphate more than five years ago. But territorial losses and the death of its leader did not end attacks carried out by its many offshoots, or by “lone wolves” embracing its ideology.

Here is a look at Islamic State, the strikes in which it was implicated or involved over the years, and the continuing threat it poses.

How did Islamic State come into being?

It started out as a rebranded faction of Al Qaeda, under the leadership of Abu Bakr Baghdadi, an Iraqi militant cleric and insurgent leader turned self-styled caliph. Those living under its rule in a wide arc of Iraq and Syria — particularly members of other religions, or of other sects of Islam — faced horrifying punishments: decapitations, crucifixion, torture. During that same era, the group also took Western hostages, killing several, including U.S. journalist James Foley, who was beheaded in 2014, and Arizona aid worker Kayla Mueller, confirmed dead in 2015.

A U.S.-spearheaded military coalition freed Iraq’s second-largest city, Mosul, from the group’s grip in 2017, and pursued its remnants into eastern Syria. By 2019, with U.S. forces on the brink of capturing him, Baghdadi killed himself in a suicide blast that also killed two children. Donald Trump, who was president at the time, declared the caliphate “obliterated.”

What were some of Islamic State’s most notorious attacks in Europe?

In November 2015, coordinated strikes by its operatives in Paris at a concert hall and outside a stadium killed 130 people, and only four months later, airport and public-transit bombings in Brussels killed 32 people.

The group was deemed to have inspired attacks including the 2016 truck rampage in the French Riviera city of Nice, which killed at least 80 people and injured hundreds more on Bastille Day, and a ramming-and-stabbing attack on and near London Bridge in 2017 that killed eight people and injured dozens more.

Have there been Islamic State-inspired attacks in the United States?

Fourteen people were killed in a 2015 shooting in San Bernardino by a husband-and-wife team who were hailed by Islamic State as “supporters.” In 2016, a gunman who swore allegiance to Baghdadi shot and killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla.

What links New Orleans suspect Shamsud-Din Jabbar with Islamic State?

In addition to the black banner recovered from his truck, the Army veteran had posted videos before the attack “indicating he was inspired” by the group, according to President Biden. The investigation is continuing.

What is Islamic State’s current status?

In the years since its last bastion in eastern Syria was overrun, Islamic State has struggled to mount large operations, with its dwindled forces conducting mostly gang-style attacks and kidnappings in the border between Iraq and Syria.

How about elsewhere in the world?

Islamic State has had greater success with its decentralized network of affiliates that have sprouted across Africa and parts of Asia.

A particularly potent affiliate is Islamic State-Khorasan — or ISIS-K — which has mounted increasingly daring attacks in the last year, including an assault on a Moscow concert hall in March that killed more than 140 people, and a twin bombing during a funeral procession in Iran that killed about 100 people.

ISIS-K was also linked to the August 2021 bombing that killed 13 U.S. service members and about 170 Afghans as the U.S. was withdrawing from Afghanistan.

How has the fall of Syria’s dictatorship affected the group?

The fall of the government of Bashar Assad in Syria has raised fears of an Islamic State resurgence on home turf, with some believing its resurrection is already underway. Despite continuing pressure from the U.S. coalition and local forces, a U.S. Central Command report in July said Islamic State had claimed more attacks in Iraq and Syria in the first six months of 2024 than it had for the entirety of 2023.

A U.S. Central Command statement in September warned that a particular focus for the group was to free the roughly 9,000 ISIS detainees held in more than 20 detention facilities across Syria — what one U.S. official described as an Islamic State army in waiting.

“If a large number of these ISIS fighters escaped, it would pose an extreme danger to the region and beyond,” Centcom commander Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla said at the time.

What are the most recent strikes by Islamic State affiliates?

This week, Islamic State in Somalia said it conducted an attack with 12 militants and two booby-trapped vehicles that killed more than 20 military personnel. It was that ISIS offshoot’s largest attack to date, experts say. In March, an Islamic State affiliate operating in the West African nation of Niger claimed responsibility for an assault it said killed 30 soldiers.

'No-one deserves this': Victims' families seek answers in New Orleans attack

Jan.3, 2025

Just hours before the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve, Jack Bech got on a phone call with his older brother Martin - an avid outdoorsman and former football star mostly known to friends and teammates as "Tiger".

Jack, 22, was in Dallas visiting family members, while Tiger, a 28-year-old former Princeton alumnus who lived in New York, was in New Orleans, getting ready to celebrate the New Year.

"We just thought it was going to be another conversation," he told the BBC. "I was showing him what we were eating, and he was showing us what he was eating."

The two brothers would never speak again.

"I hung up the phone, and that was the last time I ever spoke with him," Jack recalled.

Tiger was among the 14 people killed when a man ploughed through a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

The attacker, 42-year-old army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was killed in a gunfight with police after he drove a pick-up truck into the crowds, according to authorities. Though he posted videos online proclaiming allegiance to the Islamic State group before the attack, FBI officials said they believe he was acting alone.

While the identities of all the victims have not been made public yet, a picture is slowly emerging of a group of mostly young people, many of whom - like Tiger - were Louisiana locals.

Jack - who remembers his brother as his best friend, role model and inspiration - says that the close-knit Bech family will never be the same.

Most of the family is in the town of Lafayette, about 136 miles (218km) away from New Orleans.

"This is something we're going to have to deal with. Every time we wake up, and every time we go to sleep, it's going to be something," he added. "Every holiday, there's going to be an empty seat at the table."

But Tiger said that his brother "wouldn't want us to grieve and mourn". Instead, he has encouraged his family to remember him as "a fighter".

"He'd want us to keep attacking life... he'd want us to go and be there for each other," he said.

"I told my family that instead of seeing him a couple of times a year, he'll be with us every moment," Jack added. "Whenever we're waking up and we're going to sleep and we're walking, when we're at work, doing whatever, he'll be with us."

Among the other victims of the attack in the early morning hours of 1 January was Matthew Tenedorio, an audio-visual technician at New Orleans' Caesars' Superdome.

Tenedorio, who just turned 25 in October, had spent the earlier part of his evening at his brother's home in the town of Slidell, about 35 minutes away from New Orleans.

With him were his father and mother - who just recently recovered from cancer.

His cousin, Christina Bounds, told the BBC that his family begged him not to go into New Orleans, fearful of the large crowd and potential dangers.

Despite their pleas, he went, along with two friends. When the news broke, his mother eventually got hold of one of them.

"They said they were walking down Bourbon, and saw a body fall," she said, noting that they now believe it was a body thrown into the air by the attacker's truck.

Amid screams and gunshots, Tenedorio was separated from his friends.

His family says he was shot, and believe he was killed during the exchange of gunfire between the attacker and police officers on Bourbon Street.

The BBC is unable to independently verify this claim.

According to Ms Bounds, the family's tragedy has been made more painful by the slow, nearly non-existent trickle of communications they've had with local authorities.

"We couldn't get any information when my aunt [Tenedorio's mother, Cathy] showed up at the hospital," she said. "There has been no information from doctors, hospitals, or cops. Nobody."

"They have zero information... We don't even know what happened," Ms Bounds added. "Was he carried out by the EMS? Was he in an ambulance? Did he die instantly?"

These answers, she added, would "help people accept" what happened.

"But now it's like total shock," she added. "It's not registering."

The family has started a GoFundMe page to gather funds for Tenedorio's funeral expenses - which Ms Bounds said have been made difficult by his mother's significant medical bills during her cancer diagnosis.

Another cousin of Tenedorio's, Zach Colgan, remembers him as a "goofball" who was quick to make a joke, cared deeply about animals and was an avid storyteller.

"He cared. He was definitely a people person. A happy-go-lucky guy," Mr Colgan told the BBC. "It's sad that a terrorist attack took him... no family should ever have to bury their son, especially for something so senseless."

Mr Colgan, who has experience working with law enforcement in Louisiana, says he believes officers have done the best they can in an extremely hectic casualty situation.

"I know it's chaotic. But part of closure is getting answers. I know my aunt and uncle weren't able to get much besides 'yes - Matthew was killed'," he said.

"It'd be nice to know a little bit more," Mr Colgan added. "If it was my kid, I'd want to know."

Even as his family continues to search for answers, Mr Colgan says he hopes that the government and public's focus continues to be on the victims, rather than on law enforcement's response or what else could have been done to prevent the attack.

"I want every single one of them to be remembered," he said. "They didn't deserve this. No-one deserves this."

Rutgers reaches agreement with feds over alleged Jewish, Muslim discrimination

3 Jan, 2025

Rutgers University will review its nondiscrimination policies, analyze discrimination complaints, and launch additional training for campus police and others responsible for investigating alleged bias incidents under an agreement with the U.S. Department of Education, the department announced Thursday.

The agreement comes months after encampments formed on the university’s New Brunswick and Newark campuses to protest the war in Gaza, and it is meant to resolve reports of bias against Jewish and Muslim students spurred amid conflict in the Middle East.

Catherine Lhamon, assistant secretary for civil rights with the Department of Education, said the agreement will address serious issues of noncompliance with federal law “regarding different treatment of students based on stereotypes about the countries students and their families come from.”

Under the agreement, Rutgers is required to review policies regarding the enforcement of Title VI of the federal Civil Rights Act, which bars discrimination based on race, color, and national origin.

The university will be required to send a list of alleged discrimination incidents during the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 academic years and its responses to them to the Department of Education’s civil rights office for review.

It must also review all students and student groups informed of potential disciplinary violations or who faced such punishments during the 2023-2024 school year and provide training to campus police, workers tasked with investigating reports of discrimination and harassment, and all other employees.

“The nearly 300 complaints of antisemitic and anti-Zionist vandalism, doxing, and harassment investigated by the Department of Education are abhorrent and unacceptable. Rutgers must now make an unequivocal commitment to meaningful reform, which can be achieved without infringing on academic freedom and the right to assemble and protest,” said Rabbi David Levy, New Jersey director for the American Jewish Committee.

Rutgers will also be required to issue a statement expressing intolerance for discrimination to all students and employees and hold listening sessions with relevant groups.

The Department of Education reviewed 440 reports of alleged discrimination on Rutgers University campuses between July 2023 and June 2024, of which 293 were alleged discrimination against Jewish students and 147 against Palestinian, Arab, South Asian, or Muslim students.

Among the reports were instances of targeted threats against Jewish students and vandalism against a Jewish fraternity, a Jewish student’s dorm room, the Bildner Center for Jewish Studies, and a university Center for Islamic Life.

The Office of Civil Rights also reviewed allegations of doxxing of pro-Palestinian students and the university’s alleged removal of flyers, posters, and flags about Palestine.

“The Rutgers community stands firmly against discrimination and harassment in all its forms, and the university will always strive to strengthen the policies and practices that protect our students, faculty, and staff. Rutgers is grateful to the Office of Civil Rights for its guidance,” the university said in a statement.

Man in exploded Cybertruck was elite soldier and shot himself before blast

Jan.3, 2025

The man who drove a Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas was an active-duty US special forces soldier and shot himself dead before the blast, officials have said.

Las Vegas police have identified Matthew Alan Livelsberger, 37, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, as the driver of the vehicle, which he rented more than 800 miles away and drove to the Nevada hotel on the morning of the blast.

Mr Livelsberger's cause of death was suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Clark County Coroner's office.

Seven people were injured when the vehicle - filled with fuel canisters and firework mortars - exploded on New Year's Day. Officials said all injuries were minor.

Mr Livelsberger drove the Cybertruck to the city on Wednesday morning, less than two hours before the detonation, police have said. Parked in front of the hotel near a glass entrance, the vehicle started to smoke, then exploded.

Las Vegas authorities said the Cybertruck helped contain the explosion, sending it vertical rather than outward. The nearby glass doors and windows of the hotel did not shatter in the blast.

Authorities said they have yet to determine any motive behind the incident.

"I'm comfortable calling it a suicide with a bombing that occurred immediately after," Sheriff McMahill said during Thursday's press conference.

The sheriff said investigators recovered a military ID, a passport, two semi-automatic pistols, fireworks, an iPhone, a smart watch and several credit cards in Mr Livelsberger's name from the charred vehicle.

The body in the vehicle was burnt beyond recognition and was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill said on Thursday.

Mr McMahill said they found two tattoos on the driver's remains matching ones Livelsberger had.

The Colorado Springs native rented the Cybertruck on 28 December in Denver.

Police were able to track his movements using a number of photographs on the drive from Denver, Colorado to Las Vegas, Nevada, along with Tesla's charging technology that helped map where he stopped along the route. He was the only one seen driving the vehicle.

Mr McMahill said there are several parallels - but no definitive link - between the suspects in the incident in Las Vegas and a truck attack in New Orleans that left 14 dead, which both took place on New Year's Day.

Both suspects served at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, though there is no record they served in same unit or were there at the same time. They also both served in Afghanistan in 2009, but there is no evidence they were in the same region or unit.

Both also used rental company Turo for the vehicles involved in the incidents, Mr McMahill said.

"We don't believe there's any further threat from this subject or anybody associated to him here in Las Vegas," he said.

Mr Livelsberger had decades of experience with the US military, having served in both the Army and National Guard. He was a decorated Special Forces Intelligence Sergeant.

He was serving in Germany but on approved leave at the time of the incident.

Mr Livelsberger's father told the BBC's news partner CBS that his son was in Colorado to see his wife and eight-month-old daughter.

He said he last spoke to his son at Christmas and that everything seemed normal.

Agra's 1  7th-Century Mubarak Manzil, A Mughal Heritage Razed By 'Builder', After A Notification To Protect The Monument

Jan 3, 2025

AGRA: The 17th-century Mubarak Manzil, a Mughal heritage site also known as Aurangzeb's Haveli, was largely demolished in Agra just three months after the state archaeological department issued a notification to protect the monument. Over 100 tractors of debris were removed from the site after the demolition drive, local residents said on Thursday. They say a builder, in connivance with officials, demolished it.

Mubarak Manzil has a significant place in history, detailed in Austrian historian Ebba Koch's book 'The Complete Taj Mahal and the Riverfront Gardens of Agra'. Built during Aurangzeb's reign, it served as a residence for key Mughal figures, including Shah Jahan, Shuja and Aurangzeb. The structure was modified under British rule, becoming a customs house and salt office. By 1902, it was known as Tara Niwas.

Plaque at Agra site indicated Aurangzeb built the monument

In September, the state archaeological department had issued a notification calling for objections to the site being declared a protected monument within a month, but none were raised. And two weeks ago, officials from Lucknow visited the site to initiate preservation measures. However, demolition began shortly after their visit, leaving the historic structure in ruins.

Locals alleged that a builder, in connivance with police and administrative officials, carried out the demolition despite objections and the presence of a police outpost near the site along the Yamuna.

A local resident, Kapil Vajpayee, told TOI, "I filed several complaints with the authorities, but no action was taken. So far, 70% of the structure has been destroyed."

Agra DM Aravind Mallappa Bangari confirmed that the authorities were "aware" of the issue. "We have taken cognisance of the matter. Archaeological Survey of India and the revenue department have been directed to conduct a probe. The sub-divisional magistrate has been asked to visit the site and present a report. Meanwhile, no further changes will be allowed at the site," Bangari said.

Archibald Campbell Carlyle's 1871 report provided detailed insights into the architecture of Mubarak Manzil. A marble plaque at the site indicated it was built by Aurangzeb after his victory at the Battle of Samugarh. Historian Rajkishore Raje added that Aurangzeb renamed Dara Shikoh's palace to commemorate his triumph in the same battle.

The 1868 map of Agra places Mubarak Manzil near the pontoon bridge, where the current iron bridge stands. During British rule, the East Indian Railway used it as a goods depot. The structure's red sandstone base, arched lower floors, and minarets reflected a mix of Mughal and British architectural influences.

CJI-Led Bench To Hear 'Bhojshala Temple-Kamal Maula Mosque' DisputeWith Petitions Challenging The Validity Of The Places Of Worship Act

Jan 3, 2025,

NEW DELHI: In view of its recent ruling staying all proceedings on disputes over religious sites, Supreme Court on Thursday ordered that the fight over the Bhojshala temple-Kamal Maula mosque complex in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh be tagged and heard along with petitions challenging the validity of the Places of Worship Act which is being heard by a bench headed by the CJI.

In April last year, SC had allowed Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to carry on with a survey of the site but directed that no action be taken on the basis of the survey report without its permission. It also directed ASI not to carry out any excavation on the premises which could alter the character of the structure.

At the outset of the hearing, a bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti said the case had to be tagged with petitions challenging the Places of Worship Act in which a bench headed by the CJI had passed an order restraining filing of fresh suits challenging the ownership and title of any place of worship or ordering surveys of disputed religious places until further orders.

Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, appearing for the Hindu side, said the dispute was not related to the Places of Worship Act and urged the court to hear and decide the case.

The bench indicated that if it went on to hear the case, then a contempt notice would have to be issued for violating its order. The court said photographs filed with the petition showed that excavation was done despite its order and the parties would have to first respond to a contempt notice.

The court, thereafter, passed its order directing the registry to tag the case with other petitions after taking instructions from the CJI.

The 11th century monument is at the centre of a dispute between Hindus and Muslims. Hindus believe it is a temple of Goddess Vagdevi, an incarnation of Goddess Saraswati, while the Muslim community calls it the Kamal Maula mosque. On March 11, Madhya Pradesh HC had directed ASI to carry out a "scientific survey" of the Bhojshala complex in six weeks.

BJP claims AAP issued ‘fatwas’ to destroy 24 temples in Delhi, save 2 mosques

Jan 03, 2025

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of demolishing 24 temples in the national capital between 2016 and 2023.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla cited documents while claiming that AAP leaders issued orders to demolish 24 temples during their reign in the national capital.

Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP has been ruling Delhi for over 10 years.

Poonawalla said Kejriwal issued 'fatwas' to demolish the temples.

"The documents that have come into the public domain through the media clearly show that there is no party more deceitful in this country and the world than the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Those who accuse others, what is their own history? From 2016 to 2023, documents with signatures show how the AAP chief minister and ministers issued fatwas to demolish nearly 24 structures," he said.

The BJP leader alleged that former home minister Satyendra Jain had signed orders to demolish eight temples in 2016 but intervened to save two unidentified mosques.

"In 2016, a fatwa to demolish 8 temples was issued under the signature of Satyendra Jain, who was the home minister at the time. The interesting thing is that Satyendra Jain intervened to save two unidentified mosques that had no historical background, but he never spoke out about the temples," he said.

He said the AAAP is the biggest anti-Hindu party in India.

"Today, the biggest anti-Hindu party is the Aam Aadmi Party. They and their alliance partners, DMK, TMC, Left and Congress, always speak against Sanatan Dharma, however, AAP says nothing in response. And now they claim they will give compensation to the priests," he said.

Atishi accused BJP of demolishing temples

On January 1, Delhi chief minister Atishi accused the BJP of ordering the demolition of several temples in the national capital. She claimed that during a meeting of the Religious Committee on November 22, it was decided to demolish several temples located in West Patel Nagar, Dilshad Garden, Seemapuri, Gokalpuri, New Usmanpur, and Sultanpuri, as well as a Buddhist temple in Sundar Nagari.

"The dual face of the BJP is revealed through such orders. On the one hand, they pretend to protect Hinduism, while on the other, they secretly instruct their appointed officers and LG to demolish temples," she said at a press conference.

Romance leads Aligarh man to Pakistan jail, family appeals to PM Modi for release

02.01.25

A 21-year-old man in Aligarh district has found himself behind bars in Pakistan due to a romantic relationship with a girl from across the border, officials here said.

The young man, identified as Badal Babu, was arrested on December 28 by Pakistani authorities in the Punjab province for illegally crossing into the neighbouring country without any legal documents, the officials said.

The shockwave from this unexpected incident reached Babu's village through the media. His parents, who had believed their son was working in a factory in Delhi, were shocked to learn of his arrest through a report sourced from a Pakistani news portal.

Babu's father, Kirpal Singh, who lives in Khitkari village under Barla police station area, told media that the family learned of their son's arrest via social media.

"We couldn't believe it. For us, till this moment we knew that he was working in Delhi, but the next moment we are shocked to discover that he's in a Pakistani jail. It's like something out of a movie," he said, in disbelief.

The family has now appealed to the Indian government, particularly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to intervene and negotiate with Pakistan for Babu's release.

"We want our son back and we don't know how to bring him home. We are calling on the prime minister to help us," Babu's mother said, speaking to reporters.

"He was a simple boy. He never did anything like this before," she added.

Aligarh Superintendent of Police (Rural) Amrit Jain confirmed that they had received a memorandum from the family and would be taking the matter up with the Ministry of External Affairs.

"We will approach the proper channels to provide whatever assistance is necessary and work towards establishing contact with Babu. Our primary goal is to secure his release from custody in Pakistan," Jain said in a statement.

According to family sources, Babu was very active on Facebook, where he reportedly connected with a girl from Pakistan. After informing his parents that he would be heading to Delhi for work, Babu left his village after Raksha Bandhan in August.

Just before Diwali, his family received a video call on WhatsApp, in which Babu reassured them that he was safe, had found a job and was using a friend's phone because he could not afford his own. His family later learned that Babu had somehow crossed the international border near Jammu, although these details remain unconfirmed, the sources said.

'Can't separate religion from politics': Omar on Modi sending 'chadar' to Ajmer dargah

02.01.25

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed hope on Thursday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not succumb to pressure from any quarters and continue the yearly tradition of sending a "chadar" to the Ajmer dargah.

"You cannot separate religion from politics. We say that there should be a separation of the church from the State, but that does not happen. Votes are being sought in the name of religion, politics is done in the name of religion. This is a reality that we should accept. (However), I hope that the prime minister does not succumb to any pressure and sends a chadar to Ajmer," Abdullah told reporters here.

He added that the sentiments of the members of various communities are attached to the Ajmer dargah.

"It is not that just the people of a particular religion visit the Ajmer dargah. While Muslims go there, many non-Muslims also visit the dargah. The sentiments of many people are attached to it.

"Thankfully, the Supreme Court has put a stop to people trying to look for temples underneath mosques. When the court comes to an overall decision, that will be binding on everyone," he said.

Asked if the change in his dressing style over the last couple of years is to assert his Muslim identity, Abdullah said he does not wear clothes to send out wider messages.

"I do not open my cupboard in the morning thinking what will I wear that day or with an aim of sending out a message. I should think (what to wear) because sometimes I get into trouble. I wear a Sozni cap because it is part of my heritage. I wore a pagdi in Jammu because of my respect for all cultures. It does not weaken my faith.

"If there is a message going out, I am not doing it on purpose. I wear this cap because it suits me and keeps my head warm as my hairline is receding. I tried to put on a Karakul cap but that does not suit me," he added.

Responding to a question, the National Conference (NC) leader said the government does not need to do anything to project a secular image of Kashmir as the people of the valley are doing it on their own.

"During the recent snowfall, we saw it again. People opened their homes and mosques to accommodate tourists. Deputy commissioners or officials did not force them to do it. Whenever there is a need, people will do it," he added.

Accuse Sambhal cops of land-grab, face probe: Inquiry launched against Sunni Waqf Board

Piyush Srivastava

03.01.25

The Sambhal district administration has begun an inquiry against the Sunni Central Waqf Board and some local people who claimed they owned the land near Sambhal town’s Jama Masjid where a police station is being built.

“I have instituted an inquiry against the waqf board after receiving complaints that it illegally acquired or disposed of some properties in the district,” said Rajendra Pensiya, district magistrate of Sambhal, 400km northwest of Lucknow.

“An inquiry has also been ordered against those claiming their right over the land earmarked for the police station without any authentic document with them.”

Authorities had last month started the process of building the police station near the mosque — already the subject of a temple controversy that led to a deadly clash in November — on a plot they said was owned by the government.

But several residents and the waqf board furnished documents claiming they owned various parcels of this plot, and accused the administration of grabbing the land illegally. These residents can now face prosecution if the inquiry decides they misled the administration.

The police have put up a board at the site that says “Satyavrat Police Chowki”. A dozen labourers have been engaged to build it.

On Wednesday, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi had waded into the controversy and accused the Sambhal authorities of grabbing waqf land.

“Under the rules, no construction can be done within 100 metres of a religious place,” he said.

“Can Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi, who met many leaders in Kuwait, dare show those leaders what the BJP government is doing in Sambhal?” he added, referring to Modi’s recent Kuwait trip.

Pensiya said: “We are following all the rules. We conducted a (preliminary) inquiry and found that the claims of these people are false. It is government land.”

The district authorities, including Pensiya, are already under a cloud relating to their role in the run-up to the November violence that killed four people outside the Jama Masjid.

The Sambhal administration also plans to build police posts in the Deepa Sarai and Khaggu Sarai localities of Sambhal town that have substantial Muslim populations.

“These two areas are sensitive. The process to identify plots (for the police posts) in these areas will start soon. The construction will be done on a priority basis,” the additional superintendent, Sambhal North, Shrish Chandra, said.

Sambhal mosque row: Survey report of Shahi Jama Masjid submitted to UP court

02 January 2025

Sambhal: The court commissioner on Thursday submitted in the Chandausi court a detailed survey report on Sambhal's Jama Masjid. The report, which includes videography from all angles, was compiled during the survey conducted on November 19 and November 24.Court Commissioner Ramesh Singh Raghav, appointed as the advocate for this case by the court, told reporters after submitting the report that the survey covered the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, which has been at the centre of a legal dispute following claims that Harihar temple stood at the same location earlier."The survey was conducted according to the directions of the court and the complete report, including videography, has been submitted today to the Civil Judge Senior Division in a sealed envelope," Raghav explained.

The report, which is believed to run into 40 to 45 pages, has been submitted in a sealed envelope in accordance with the directives of the Supreme Court. The case has drawn considerable attention since November 19, when the court ordered the survey of the centuries-old Mughal-era mosque. Another survey was conducted on November 24 when violence broke out.Protesters gathered near the Shahi Jama Masjid and clashed with the security personnel. Four people were killed and several people including police personnel injured in the violence.

A case was registered against Samajwadi Party (SP) MP from Sambhal, Zia Ur Rahman, for inciting people to violence. A case of electricity theft has also been registered against him.

SP president Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of deliberately instigating the last month's violence in Sambhal and called it a "conspiratorial" party.

He charged that the BJP government and its chief minister have no vision. The BJP is destroying the democratic system. It misuses power. It uses the administration for its political gains, he said.

He said, "The Sambhal incident was deliberately caused by the BJP government. The administration in Sambhal killed innocent people. The administration and officials are working under pressure."

"The BJP does negative politics. It hatches conspiracies and plots to tarnish the image of opposition leaders," he alleged.

The Sambhal case centres around claims made by certain groups that a Hindu temple had existed on the site before the mosque was built. The legal proceedings and subsequent survey have sparked considerable public and political debate, with the outcome of the case eagerly awaited by many in the region.

The case lost steam when on December 12, a Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Sanjay Kumar and K V Viswanathan restrained till further directions the courts in the country from entertaining fresh lawsuits and passing any effective interim or final orders in pending ones seeking to reclaim religious places, especially mosques and dargahs.

The Congress passed a resolution in the extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting at Belagavi in Karnataka on December 26 and mentioned the Sambhal violence. It claimed that the communal tension has deliberately been stoked in Sambhal and other places for the RSS-BJP's narrow political gain.

"The Places of Worship Act, 1991 to which the Indian National Congress is firmly committed in letter and spirit has also come under needless and reckless debate," the resolution said.

‘Mosques Should Be Research Centres’: Lagos State University

January 3, 2025

Muslims have been urged to turn mosques to research centers, where people can learn many things as it is done in some foreign countries.

This was stated by Dr Saheed Timehin of the Department of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Arts, Lagos State University, Ojo at the inauguration of Jama-At-Ul-Islamiyya of Nigeria Division 7 Central Mosque, Lagos Branch, Magodo and N500 million fund raising for J.I.N International Schools.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ibrahim Layode, hailed the organization for peaceful promotion of the Islamic religion in the state.

Dr Timehin said Muslims don’t take care of mosques,

“All mosques belong to God and it is a place dedicated to worshipping God no matter the name given to it. It should be a research center. A Muslim can pray anywhere he wants, but the place where Muslims gather that we call mosque must be a place to remember God.

“It is not where you talk about yourself, it is about God. Here, in Yorubaland, we don’t have a better understanding of mosques. They think it is a place to compete with money. It is where you fear God. It is the first school, it was where Prophet Muhammed taught people,” he said.

The scholar stressed that a mosque is not just about religion, and that the first university in the world started from a mosque.

Dr Timehin said that in those days, all mosques had libraries, classrooms and that scholars lived there.

He added that it was a place for Muslims to resolve issues, adding that the first parliament in Islam started from a mosque.

“A mosque should be revered. We can do all sorts of learning in a mosque. In Iraq, all their mosques have libraries and all the Imams have offices. The Imam should have visiting hours to attend to people. We should have all these in our mosques. Mosques are known for good things generally. We don’t even get good messages in many mosques these days. An Imam should be able to talk to anybody. An Imam should know something about everything because you will be talking to a lot of people.

“In some countries, they have places for research and people see mosques as a place for social engagements. This mosque has several features and we can add others. It should not be for Jumat prayers or marriages alone. They should organise workshops and seminars there,” he said.

Bauchi Governor Clarifies Absence From Tinubu’s Visit Amid Accusation Of Threat To President

 3 January 2025

By Rachel Okporu Fadoju

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has stated that his absence from governors’ New Year visit to the Lagos home of President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday was not political.

Naija News reports that governors under the umbrella of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum visited the President at his Bourdillon Road home in Ikoyi, Lagos, on New Year’s Day,

The governors in attendance included Abba Yusuf (Kano), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), and Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo). Others were Babagana Zulum (Borno), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Hope Uzodimma (Imo), and Usman Ododo (Kogi).

However, Governor Mohammed, who also serves as the Chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party’s Governors’ Forum, was notably absent from the visit.

Recall that the Presidency had accused Mohammed of threatening anarchy against Tinubu over his position on the proposed tax reform bills.

Hence, the Governor’s absence from the visit sparked speculation, especially given recent tensions between him and the Presidency over the reform bills.

However, speaking with Punch on Thursday, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, dismissed any political undertones to Mohammed’s absence from the visit to Tinubu’s house.

Gidado explained that the governor had been mourning the loss of his 102-year-old stepmother, Hauwa Duguri, who passed away on New Year’s Day and was still receiving sympathisers offering condolences.

He said, “The stepmother of the governor, Hauwa Duguri, passed away on Wednesday, the same day as the New Year visit. The governor has been restless. As I speak to you, we are in his country home in Duguri, mourning her loss.

“It is uncalled for to link the governor’s absence to his recent exchanges with the Presidency.”

Your Friends And Govt Officials Are The Only Ones Benefiting From Your Reforms – Rhodes-Vivour Hits Tinubu

3 January 2025

By Oladipo Abiola

The 2023 governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, says the reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu are not beneficial to Nigerians.

He argued that the majority of Nigerians have been plunged into hardship and suffering as a result of the reforms introduced by President Tinubu since assuming power in May 2023.

Speaking on Thursday as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the LP chieftain said 70 per cent of Nigerians now spend all of their incomes on only transportation and food.

Rhodes-Vivour submitted that the only people who seem to be benefitting from the reforms were the bankers, the people in government, and the President’s friends.

He said: “The people are experiencing unprecedented hardship. Today, over 70 per cent of people’s income is spent on transportation and food. They’ve not even started to think about how they can afford accommodation,” the LP chieftain said on Thursday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“We have a situation where there is a culture of wastefulness, and extravagance that does not reflect the dire economic situation that the same President is pushing out that needs to be reformed.

“The only people that seem to be benefitting from these reforms are maybe the bankers, the people in government, and the President’s friends. How many Nigerians can say they are benefitting from any reform any reform right now?”

Naija News reports upon assumption of office, President Tinubu had implemented the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira, two major policies that have set off high inflation rates in the country.

Malaysia becoming great country with transparent governance based on MADANI values - PM

BERNAMA

03-01- 2025

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today attributed the government’s significant achievements during his two years in office to the implementation of transparent governance that is free from major scandals.

He said Malaysia is a country governed by the rule of law and all decisions are made based on good governance, in line with the principles of MADANI Malaysia which emphasises noble values.

“This country upholds the rule of law, and principles of good governance must guide our decisions...MADANI places a strong emphasis on values, so let us not be distracted by other matters,” he said.

As such, he called on civil servants to remain resolute in their mission to enhance the country’s economy and performance, as well as demonstrate their efficiency and dedication.

The prime minister said this at the Prime Minister’s Department’s monthly assembly here today. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

He also reminded civil servants to continue to focus on efforts to improve the country’s economy and performance and expressed optimism that the dedication and unity of civil servants, together with the people, will propel Malaysia to a position of excellence within the region in the next few years.

“Believe me, brothers and sisters, give it one or two years. If the spirit is like this, with this recognition and spirit of unity, I believe we will see Malaysia as a great country in the region. I am confident of that,“ said the prime minister.

In highlighting the government’s significant achievements during his two years in office to transparent governance, Anwar said there were still talks about past cases.

“I want to express my gratitude to Allah SWT that, over these two years, we have implemented a transparent tender process without a single major scandal coming to light,“ he said.

Anwar also called on the public service to think of a comprehensive reform approach to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery to the people.

“Do we need to gather, discuss together, evaluate each other’s performance, recognise achievements, and generate fresh ideas? Let us think about this together,“ he said.

Meanwhile, the prime minister said that a Cabinet retreat would be held soon and it would focus on addressing shortcomings and enhancing commitment in the administration.

The retreat aims to identify areas for improvement and rectify existing weaknesses, he said and called on all government offices, schools, and institutions to hold monthly discussions to explore ways to strengthen their capabilities and address deficiencies in public services.

“The first 10 minutes explain the success, and the next 50 minutes (discuss) how can improve capabilities, fix existing weaknesses, and provide the best service and performance to our people.

“When I refer to ‘our people,‘ let us not forget that there are still marginalised communities and individuals living in poverty. This reality should neither bring us comfort nor peace as long as anyone is left behind,“ he added.

Anwar also voiced his concern about the narrow focus on racial and religious issues, urging civil servants to prioritise the well-being of all citizens, regardless of their background.

“Those responsible for managing a region or state should not concern themselves with who is in power or which race is affected. Our duty is to regard every citizen as our collective responsibility and skin colour must not influence our actions.

“If someone falls into the category of hardcore poor, they must be assisted. If they deserve recognition, they should be acknowledged,“ he said.

Anwar emphasised that constitutional principles, such as the position of the national language, religion, and the special rights of Malays and Bumiputeras, remain the foundation of the country’s policy.

Trial of Anwar’s defamation suit against Pendang MP resheduled to Oct 2026

BERNAMA

03-01- 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The hearing of a defamation suit filed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim against Pendang Member of Parliament Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim has been rescheduled to October 2026.

Lawyer Datuk SN Nair, representing Anwar, said he had requested that the trial dates earlier set by the court - Jan 20 and 23 and Feb 12 and 13 this year, be vacated as his client has official business abroad.

“The court set a new trial date, from Oct 26 to 29, 2026. The plaintiff (Anwar) will be the sole witness in the case,“ he said when met by reporters after the case management, held in chambers before High Court Judge Datuk Ahmad Shahrir Mohd Salleh.

Meanwhile, lawyer Mohd Faizi Che Abu, representing Awang Solahuddin, confirmed the new trial date.

Anwar filed the defamation suit on March 3, 2023, over a statement by Awang Solahuddin in the Parliament lobby when attending the Dewan Rakyat sitting on Feb 21 of the same year.

According to Anwar, the remarks, which were recorded in audio and video formats, had been made public.

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman said the remarks implied that he was vindictive and revengeful and had abused his power as Prime Minister and Finance Minister by interfering, disrupting and arbitrarily instructing law enforcers and prosecutors in Malaysia to achieve his personal political agenda.

Anwar claimed that Awang Solahuddin had deliberately and maliciously uttered and published defamatory remarks to incite the public and create personal hatred against the prime minister who is now leading a legitimate government and is committed to combating all forms of corruption.

He also contended that the remarks have tarnished his reputation as a respectable leader in Malaysia and the world.

Anwar is seeking general, aggravated and exemplary damages and compensation as well as an injunction order to refrain the defendant or his agent from republishing the alleged defamatory remarks.

Sabah mufti backs public caning for Shariah offences in Terengganu, says similar punishment already done in Tawau

03 Jan 2025

KOTA KINABALU, Jan 3 — Sabah State Mufti, Datuk Bungsu @ Aziz Jaafar, supports the implementation of the six whippings as a punishment for offenders of Shariah law in Terengganu recently.

Bungsu said that the punishment aligns with the principles of “takzir” in Islamic law. He added that the “takzir” referred to punishments determined by religious authorities or the government for offences whose specific penalties are not explicitly outlined in the Shariah.

Hence, the execution of this punishment is seen as consistent with the requirements of Shariah law and aims to serve as a deterrent to the community.

“In Sabah, people say if something is hidden or kept secret, no one will know about it, and it will not serve as a deterrent. That is one of the reasons why such punishments need to be carried out in public (for selected individuals).

“However, this punishment is carried out under strict conditions. It cannot be recorded or made viral and can only be witnessed by certain individuals. This ensures that it aligns with the philosophy of Shariah law,” he said to reporters after the 30th Haul (death anniversary) Ceremony of the late Tun Datu Mustapha Datu Harun at the Tun Datu Mustapha Memorial Park in Putatan yesterday.

Nevertheless, Bungsu also cautioned against politicising or turning this issue into a subject of religious debate, as it reflected the “ijtihad” (independent reasoning) of the religious authorities in Terengganu.

He emphasised that the “ijtihad” decision made by Terengganu cannot be annulled by other parties.

In Sabah, he noted that similar punishments have previously been implemented, for example, in Tawau.

“I was informed by the Chief Shariah Judge of Sabah that this punishment has indeed been carried out, such as in Tawau, although I cannot recall the exact date.

“Every state has its own approach. If any state disagrees, it is beyond their jurisdiction to overturn another state’s ‘ijtihad”. We support this implementation as it complies with Islamic law,” he said.

The recent punishment of six strokes of the cane for a male Shariah offender in Terengganu has garnered attention from various parties. However, Bungsu urged everyone to understand the context of the ruling before passing judgment. — The Borneo Post

Ahead of pro-Najib rally on Monday, PM Anwar tells public to heed Palace’s remarks on pardon and clemency

By Syed Jaymal Zahiid

03 Jan 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 3 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today urged all parties to respect the King’s firm reminder that only he holds the power to pardon or commute a sentence, ahead of next Monday’s rally supporting jailed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“You must read, understand and respect the Palace’s decree,” Anwar said briefly to questions by reporters after lunch at a neighbourhood food court in Wangsa Maju here.

He also confirmed separately that Pakatan Harapan is not involved in the rally, telling reporters to instead direct any inquiries to his deputy, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi — who chairs its ally, Barisan Nasional.

Anwar was also asked if he felt the Palace’s statement was issued in relation to the planned rally.

“Yes, yes. Understand and listen [to the statement],” he addded.

Earlier, Istana Negara issued a statement urging the public to respect the Constitution and established laws, ahead of the rally and amid debate over whether or not Datuk Seri Najib Razak can serve his remaining sentence at home.

The palace said any convict looking for a pardon or sentence reduction must formally submit their proposal to the Pardons Board before its next meeting.

Najib, 71, is currently on a 12-year prison sentence for corruption after being convicted in the SRC International case. He has appealed his sentence and the Court of Appeal is set to hear it on Monday.

Hundreds of Najib’s supporters including from Umno and PAS are planning to hold a rally on that day supporting the disgraced former prime minister.

Last week, the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) had clarified that any proposals for Najib to serve his remaining prison sentence under house arrest must be submitted to the Pardons Board.

The AGC emphasised that all pardon applications for offences committed in Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya must follow proper legal procedures as outlined under the Federal Constitution, and any other channels.

Penang police bust forest drug lab near Bkt Gambir, seize over RM51,000 worth of heroin

03 Jan 2025

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 3 — Police have cracked down drug trafficking and processing activities in a forest area near Cangkat Bukit Gambir here following the arrest of a local man on Wednesday afternoon.

Timur Laut district police chief ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the 47-year-old suspect was arrested in a toilet in the forest by a police team from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) of the Penang Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) who conducted a raid at about 5pm, based on information and intelligence.

He said during the raid, they seized a quantity of heroin drugs along with various equipment believed to be used to process drugs worth RM51,370.

“The drugs were found in a brown paper box with ‘Luzhou Laojiao Touqu’ written on it with an estimated weight of 5,351 grams worth RM51,370,” he said in a statement last night.

According to him, intelligence found that the syndicate is believed to have only been active with the activity since early December 2024 and the seized drugs could be used by 26,755 people or 26,755 times.

He said the results of the urine screening conducted found that the suspect was positive for amphetamine/methamphetamine and also had 10 past records for criminal and drug related offences.

Abdul Rozak said the suspect would be remanded for seven days from yesterday until Jan 8 to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. — Bernama

Terrorists have safe havens in southern districts, meeting told in KP

Umer Farooq

January 3, 2025

PESHAWAR: Although law and order situation remains volatile across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, senior police officials say that terrorists are concentrating on southern districts due to proximity of the areas to Afghanistan and a ‘still intact’ network across the border.

They informed lawmakers during a meeting here on Tuesday that terrorists had safe havens in southern districts including Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu and Lakki Marwat.

The meeting, chaired by the speaker of provincial assembly, Babar Saleem Swati, was attended by lawmakers mostly from merged districts and parliamentary leaders of all the political parties. Police chief Akhtar Hayat Khan briefed participants of the meeting.

Sources privy to the meeting said that lawmakers were given a presentation on prevailing law and order situation, operations carried out against terrorists and capacity of police force.

“From this meeting, I would say some 30 per cent of Dera Ismail Khan district, the hometown of Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur and police chief Akhtar Hayat Khan, is, if not totally, under control of militants to some extent,” a lawmaker told Dawn.

He said that police could not patrol in Kulachi, Draband and many other areas of the district. “Militants come out during the night and disappear in the day,” he added.

Sources privy to the meeting said that the police chief was flooded with questions and several queries were not answered. “Mr Khan also left several questions unanswered and told lawmakers to ask these questions from others, referring to army,” they added.

The police chief informed the lawmakers that police were leading from the front in all the merged districts except Bajaur where military was leading operations against terrorists.

He said that terrorists had been focusing on merged districts and benefited from ‘the still intact’ supply line, referring to the Afghan Taliban’s support to the banned outfits for carrying out militant attacks in Pakistan. He added that the network was connected.

The police chief informed the lawmakers that around 4,000 terrorists with 35 per cent Afghan nationals were present in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said that currently there were around 188 Tashkeels [militant formations].

When told that the number of checkposts should be increased if the situation was so bad instead of vacating checkposts at nights, the police chief said that they did not have the capacity to counter so many attacks on the posts.

“I understand that this is beyond the capacity of police as they are not trained to fight against heavily armed terrorists,” an MPA told Dawn. He said that funds being spent on military for fighting against terrorists should be spent on training and equipping provincial police so that their capacity was built.

The police chief also informed the lawmakers that they arrested thousands of terrorists but pointed fingers at the justice system for not punishing them. According to sources, the police chief said that his department devised different strategies for different districts. He told the lawmakers that they would be briefed separately on their relevant districts, keeping in view sensitivity of the issue.

“Political leadership can play a major role but I wonder what the priorities of provincial government are,” questioned a lawmaker. He told Dawn that the members of treasury benches in the provincial assembly, who attended the meeting, should give a message to chief minister about the prevailing situation.

The meeting was held after Mr Swati, during a KP Assembly sitting on Monday, ordered a briefing by provincial police chief Akhtar Hayat Khan on the prevailing law and order situation in the province. He issued these orders following a debate in the house on “poor” state of security in the province.

Sources also said that inspector general of Frontier Corps and Peshawar corps commander will give an in-camera briefing to lawmakers next week.

Govt rules out Imran's release via 'executive order' as PTI says talks success hinges on 'justice for all'

By Web Desk

January 03, 2025

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has ruled out the release of incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan via "executive order" with the former ruling party reiterating the January 31 "cut-off date" for the fulfilment of its demands.

"Talks will only be successful when there is justice for all," PTI Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja said while speaking to a private news channel on Tuesday.

He reiterated the PTI's demands to release "political prisoners", including Imran, and constitute a judicial commission to probe the events of May 9, 2023, and Nov 26 crackdown on PTI protesters. "If these demands are not met...we will then devise a future course of action," he added.

In response to a question, Raja noted that January 31 was the "cut-off date" for negotiations and after that, his party would chalk out the next course of action.

The statement came hours after the embattled former ruling party and the government finally held their second round of dialogue, which the National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq said was held in a cordial environment.

"In the last meeting we decided that PTI would present its charter of demands, but the opposition demanded another meeting with [PTI founder] Imran Khan to chalk out the list of demands and the next meeting will be held next week, hopefully," Sadiq said while talking to journalists after the conclusion of the second round.

"The conclusion of the talks was that all of the participants decided to sit together for the betterment of Pakistan [and] to talk about issues such as economy, terrorism and any other," he added.

The meeting was chaired by the NA Speaker in the Parliament House’s Constitution Committee Room as he was facilitating and leading the negotiations between the treasury and the opposition.

Meanwhile, PM’s aide on political affairs, Rana Sanaullah welcomed "positive statements" of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Raja during today's meeting.

"PTI committee wanted to seek guidance from its founder," he said while speaking on Geo News programme 'Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath', noting that the government team did not put any conditions for negotiations.

Referring to PTI's demand to release the PTI founder, Sanaullah said that they would question the former ruling party on how such a demand can be tabled.

In response to a question, the PML-N leader said that the establishment neither asked his party to hold negotiations nor did it stop them. "Even ISPR DG said the political parties should talk to each other," he added.

Furthermore, he rejected the notion of the government offering to release jailed Imran, saying that no one had issued statements about the PTI founder being released in 15 days.

Joint declaration

Reading out the joint declaration of the second round of talks earlier in the day, Senator Irfan Siddiqui said that PTI's Ayub and others presented their point of view in detail.

"They [PTI] demanded the release of incarcerated Imran Khan and their workers and formation of judicial commission on the events of May 9, 2023 and Nov 26," he said.

Furthermore, he said, that the opposition wanted to meet the incarcerated PTI founder for consultation to chalk out the "charter of demands". "They [PTI] said Imran had allowed to start this negotiation process... in a bid to continue the process in a positive manner, Imran's guidance is necessary," he added.

Siddiqui noted that the opposition agreed to table the charter of demand in written form after consulting the party founder. During the meeting, he said, the government has no objection to the PTI committee meeting the jailed founder.

"It was agreed that the date for the third round of talks will be announced after the PTI committee meets Imran," he concluded.

Reprieve for 19 PTI men convicted by military court

Baqir Sajjad Syed

January 3, 2025

• Decision follows mercy petitions submitted by 67 of 85 convicted individuals

• Petitions of remaining men to be decided after ‘due legal process’, says ISPR

• Seven released from Peshawar prison

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Army announced on Thursday that 19 Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) activists convicted by Field General Court Martial (FGCM) for involvement in the May 9 riots had been granted remission in their sentences, while cases of 48 others are under appeal in military courts.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, said the decision followed mercy petitions submitted by 67 of the 85 convicted individuals. It said that 48 petitions have been processed to the courts of appeal, while petitions of 19 convicts have been accepted “purely on humanitarian grounds, in accordance with the law”.

It added, “Mercy petitions of the remaining will be decided in due course of time, following the legal process.”

The May 9, 2023, riots erupted after the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan at the Islamabad High Court in the Al-Qadir Trust graft case. Military installations and monuments were attacked during the unrest, leading to widespread arrests and trials in military courts.

Of the 105 cases referred for military trials, 85 individuals were convicted, receiving sentences ranging from two to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, whereas 20 were released earlier in April after remission in their sentences.

The recent remissions apply to individuals sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment. In April, 20 convicts — all with sentences of less than three years — were also released. Most of those granted remission this time had already spent 19 months in custody.

However, five individuals sentenced to two years were notably excluded from the remission. Among them are Mian Abbad Farooq, a PTI leader whose arrest sparked controversy following his son’s death, and Mian Muhammad Akram Usman, a former member of the provincial assembly.

Other excluded individuals are Izzat Khan, Haider Majeed — a lawyer arrested alongside PTI founder Imran Khan’s nephew — and a retired Air Force officer, Group Captain Viqas Ahmed Mohsin.

Seven released in KP

Among those granted remission, seven PTI activists from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were released from Peshawar Central Prison. They were convicted for attacking military installations in Mardan, Bannu, Peshawar and Timergara during the riots.

The released individuals were identified as Mohammad Ayaz, Samiullah Wazir, Yasir Nawaz, Said Alam, Zahid Khan, Mohammad Suleman and Mohammad Ilyas.

Some of the party’s members, including provincial minister Meena Khan Afridi, welcomed the released activists outside the prison, where they were garlanded and offered sweets.

An eyewitness said that Samiullah Wazir was wheelchair-bound as he couldn’t walk properly due to some health issues. He was handed over to his relatives and shifted to a local hospital.

The released persons were taken out from the prison premises in a procession. Interestingly, after their release, they were raising slogans in favour of their party’s founder and former prime minister Imran Khan.

‘Fair process’

The ISPR emphasised the fairness of the process, stating, “The remission of punishments is a testament to the strength of the due process and fairness, which ensures that justice is served while also taking into account the principles of compassion and mercy.”

It said that the individuals whose sentences were remitted would be released after the completion of procedural formalities. “All those convicted retain the right of appeal and other legal remedies as per the law and the constitution,” it added.

Retired Colonel Inamur Raheem, a lawyer specialising in military law, shed light on the process. “Under military procedure, convicts are immediately given a ‘Format of Appeal’, which can be submitted within 40 days to challenge their sentencing. However, a mercy petition is an administrative matter that can be submitted at any time,” he said, adding that such petitions are often filed after exhausting appeal options.

The Supreme Court, in its ruling on appeals against FGCM trials last month, had conditionally allowed the pronouncement of verdicts. The bench directed that “the remissions admissible to the said persons be granted and persons who can be released after remissions be released forthwith”.

This remission appears to align with the court’s directive, though the status of the other 48 convicts — whose cases are under appeal — remains unclear.

The announcement of the first batch of verdicts drew international criticism, including from the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States, who raised concerns about the transparency and fairness of the trials, labelling them inconsistent with democratic norms and human rights standards.

IT minister draws MNA’s ire with ‘all OK’ mantra

Kalbe Ali

January 3, 2025

ISLAMABAD: For the second consecutive day on Thursday, government officials faced intense grilling by parliamentarians over slow internet and frequent outages.

The meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT and Telecom witnessed a heated debate over the throttling of internet, leading to an emotionally charged response by the minister of state for IT and the PTA chairman.

The minister, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, told the committee that the IT or any other industry has not reported any issues related to the internet.

She reiterated that Pakistan was facing terror threats and internet shutdowns were “necessary in certain conditions”.

The minister’s response angered PPP MNA Sharmila Farooqi, who expressed disappointment over the officials’ attitude.

“Four meetings [of the committee] have been held, and yet no solution has been found. Either we are lying or the government is,” Ms Farooqi said.

While addressing the minister, Ms Farooqi said her comment that the industry faced no losses due to internet disruption was contrary to the facts.

“My husband runs an e-commerce company; he has suffered losses due to repeated internet slowdowns,” Ms Farooqi claimed.

“Is everyone lying about internet speed? The fact is whenever the PTI gives a protest call, we all face internet shutdown immediately,” she said.

“Are we fools who come to the committee meeting only to hear that everything is going well,” she said while referring to the government’s responses to prevalent internet issues.

‘No malice’

The committee chairman, MNA Syed Aminul Haque, also expressed concern over the internet slowdown.

He said that in an earlier meeting, the committee was told by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) that the speed would improve by October 2024.

“But the concerns persist regarding internet issues, which are causing the financial losses amounting to millions of dollars to the country,” Mr Haque added.

The PTA chairman, retired Maj Gen Hafeezur Rehman, said three out of seven submarine cables connecting Pakistan were damaged in recent times, leading to significant internet disruptions in the country.

He further explained that the PTA blocks internet on the directions from the federal government, Ministry of Interior, and courts.

There was “no malicious intent” behind these actions, Mr Rehman assured the committee.

A day ago, the PTA chief told the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom that blocking access to the internet was a “legal grey area” and called for the ministries of law and interior to justify its legality.

The NA committee decided to summon the secretaries of law and interior ministries in the next meeting for a briefing on the issue of regular internet shutdowns.

5G rollout

Mr Rehman told the committee that the current allocation of 270 MHz spectrum was insufficient for Pakistan, which has a population of 240 million. It resulted in network choking issues.

However, he announced that the 5G spectrum auction is planned for April, which will significantly improve the internet situation in the country.

Ms Khawaja also said the government was trying to solve these issues and referred to the discussion with Elon Musk’s internet company, Starlink, to bring satellite-based internet to Pakistan.

PTCL properties

The committee expressed displeasure over PTCL’s repeated failure to provide a list of its properties.

The committee directed the PTCL management to provide a complete list of propertiesatn the next meeting.

The committee was informed that the Privatisation Commission serves as the custodian of sales and purchase agreement of PTCL and oversees all related matters.

It was clarified that PTCL cannot sell any property without prior approval from its board.

The IT minister briefed said a special Committee, headed by the finance minister, has been formed to address this issue.

The Senate body sought the findings of the special committee for review in its next meeting.

MNA Haq, the committee chairman, instructed that the sale and purchase agreement of PTCL with UAE telecom giant Etisalat should be shared to examine its clauses in detail.

The committee also deferred the ‘Digital Nation Pakistan Bill’ till its next meeting.

KURRAM: Protesters continued their sit-in in Parachinar, headquarters of Kurram district, on Thursday as they announced that they would end their protest only when the roads are opened for traffic and they are made safe for public travel. The two sides signed the peace agreement in Kohat on Wednesday.

Tehsil chairman Agha Muzammil Hussain said that the sit-in outside the Parachinar Press Club would continue until the roads are opened and normal traffic is restored on it and people’s security is ensured.

Meanwhile, the people of both sides of Kurram district have welcomed the peace agreement and expressed hope that the roads to the affected areas would be opened soon and normalcy would return to the area.

Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud said on Thursday that the delivery of food and essential goods to Parachinar city, Bushahra and over 100 villages will begin soon. He claimed that medicines have already been sent to Parachinar by a welfare organisation, and these medicines are also being sent to other affected areas. He said that efforts are being made to open roads as soon as possible.

The peace agreement was signed due to efforts of the government-sponsored Grand Peace Jirga for establishment of lasting peace in Kurram.

According to Jirga member Syed Raza Hussain, the Jirga members and elders of the two parties signed a 14-point peace agreement, after which various measures were being taken to restore peace, including opening of roads.

To begin implementation of the peace agreement, meetings have already started at the office of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti, with all senior civil and military officers. A plan of action is being developed to open the roads, and full security will be provided to travelers.

Roads in Kurram district, including the main road, the only link of Parachinar to other parts of the country, had been closed for all types of traffic for the last 87 days.

Due to the road blockade for 87 days, a serious humanitarian crisis unfolded in Parachinar, with people facing famine-like situation as stocks of essential food items and other goods has completely exhausted, business centres, hotels, restaurants, and bazaars are closed and patients, especially children, have been dying in homes and hospitals due to non-availability of medicines.

PPMA efforts praised

Meanwhile, the Ministry of National Health Services has extended its gratitude to the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association (PPMA) for its support in mitigating the acute shortage of life-saving drugs in Parachinar and other areas of Kurram district.

In a letter of appreciation, the ministry commended PPMA’s efforts and commitment to providing essential medical supplies to the strife-affected region during challenging times. It highlighted how such acts of compassion and corporate social responsibility reflect the highest ideals of public service.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working with PPMA to ensure the continued availability of critical healthcare resources, strengthening the partnership for a healthier and more equitable future for all.

Arbitration eases burden on courts, observes Justice Shah

Nasir Iqbal

January 3, 2025

ISLAMABAD: Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, the senior puisne judge of the Supreme Court, on Thursday expressed the hope that the federal government would swiftly enact arbitral legislation in the larger economic interest of the nation, and to ensure an effective and contemporary dispute resolution mechanism for the people.

Underscoring significant economic benefits of arbitration as a cost-effective, efficient and confidential means of resolving disputes, Justice Shah observed that arbitration alleviates the burden on courts, enhances business productivity and provides a faster resolution process, thereby minimising disruptions to businesses.

The observation came when the apex court was apprised about a pending draft bill for a new Arbitration Act, prepared by the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan and submitted to the government on May 2, 2024. The bill, submitted by the Law Ministry, aims to modernise the outdated arbitral dispute resolution framework, which has remained largely unchanged since 1940.

The information came during the hearing of a dispute. Justice Shah, who presided over the three-judge bench, had taken up an appeal by Kausar Rana Resources (Private) Limited against a June 24, 2024, Lahore High Court judgement.

The controversy revolves around a dispute between the Qatar Lubricants Company WLL and Fawad Naeem Rana (respondents) before the LHC under the Companies Act 2017. The petition had sought rectification of the register of sharers under Section 126 of the Companies Act. It was alleged that owners of certain shares had fraudulently secured their transfer into Kausar Rana Resources (Pvt.) Ltd (KRR) and the register of sharers while relying on an illegal and void agreement of April 12, 2020.

The petitioners filed an application in the LHC under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act 1940, seeking stay of proceedings on the respondents’ petition. They urged the LHC to refer the matter for arbitration by any retired judge of a high court or the Supreme Court, in accordance with clause (13) of the agreement.

On June 24, the high court dismissed the petitioners’ application. Consequently, the petitioners approached the apex court for leave to appeal.

In his judgement, Justice Shah observed that the dispute as well as the request for referring the matter to arbitration pertain to alleged fraudulent transfer of shares, adding that the rectification of the register of members (shareholders) falls exclusively within the jurisdiction of the court established under the Companies Act.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court accepted the request and directed that the award made by the arbitrator be filed before the company bench for further proceedings in accordance with the Arbitration Act.

The judgement explains that the ability to enforce international arbitration awards strengthens trade and commerce. It says that arbitration’s stable and predictable dispute resolution mechanism promotes investor confidence, making the country an attractive destination for foreign investment.

These factors collectively foster a favourable business environment, drive economic growth and enhance the country’s competitiveness on the global stage, the judgement said, adding that while enforcing an arbitration agreement, ‘the courts’ role was not to pre-empt the jurisdiction of the arbitrators but to support the arbitral process and ensure that the parties adhere to their agreement.

By prioritising the arbitration, courts uphold the principle of party autonomy and reinforce the parties’ choice to resolve their disputes outside the traditional litigation.

This approach not only respects their agreement but also addresses inefficiencies inherent in the conventional judicial proceedings, Justice Shah observed, adding that courts should adopt a resolute stance of non-interference, encouraging arbitration and other forms of alternative dispute resolution, such as mediation, as the preferred modes of resolving disputes.

This judicial mindset is particularly vital for our country, where an overburdened judicial system and burgeoning case backlogs impose immense economic costs on both the judiciary and society. By respecting arbitration agreements and fostering an environment conducive to swift dispute resolution, courts can play a pivotal role in alleviating this crisis, the judgement said.

The ruling also directed that a copy of the judgement be dispatched to Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan for onward correspondence and as a reminder to the ministry concerned.

Hundreds of settlers storm the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque

02 Jan 2025

Hundreds of Zionist settlers stormed the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Quds this morning, Thursday.

Quds sources said that the settlers stormed the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque in successive groups from the "Maghariba Gate", under heavy protection from the police and army of the Zionist enemy and its armed special forces.

They added that the settlers performed Talmudic prayers and rituals and epic prostration in the courtyards of Al-Aqsa; especially the eastern side near "Bab Al-Rahma", and received explanations about the alleged "temple", and exited from "Bab Al-Silsilah" in pre-arranged paths.

The enemy police tightened military measures at the gates of Al-Aqsa Mosque, obstructed Palestinian citizens from reaching Al-Aqsa, and prevented others from entering.

PMF Chief downplays threats to Iraq, highlights improved Shiite-Kurd-Sunni relations

2025-01-02

Shafaq News/ On Thursday, Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Chief Faleh al-Fayyad downplayed the potential threats to Iraq following the collapse of the Syrian regime. He also described the current relations among Iraq's three main communities—Shiites, Kurds, and Sunnis—as "better" than in the past, especially during the period when ISIS controlled about one-third of the country in 2014.

Speaking at the "Tribe is Mobilization and Ammunition" conference held in Maysan province, al-Fayyad said, "What is happening in Syria is a challenge that requires caution, but unfounded rumors should not sway us." He continued, "What kind of danger could confront us in Iraq? It is either an external attack or an internal strife. We are fully prepared to face any external attack with the PMF, the army, and all other security forces."

Addressing the second issue of internal strife, al-Fayyad noted that "the last two years have seen greater political calm, harmony, and coexistence among the social components compared to before."

"The relationship with Kurdistan and between the Sunnis and Shiites is better, and political stability and government performance are better. These factors make 2024 different from 2014."

Al-Fayyad underscored that it is not easy for Iraq to fall into conspiracies, as it possesses strong and fundamental elements, including the religious authority's fatwa and loyalty to Ahl al-Bayt (the family of the Prophet Muhammad). He affirmed, "There is no local threat when there is unity and solidarity."

The PMF chief concluded, "We are mindful of the developments in Syria, monitoring and communicating to maintain security and close any gaps," adding, "We live in a state of strength and stability, not complacency, as defeated hearts do not create victory."

24 killed as pro-Ankara factions clash with Syria’s Kurdish-led SDF

January 03, 2025

BEIRUT: At least 24 fighters, mostly from Turkish-backed groups, were killed in clashes with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northern Manbij district, a war monitor said on Thursday.

The violence killed 23 Turkish-backed fighters and one member of the SDF-affiliated Manbij Military Council, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Britain-based war monitor said the latest bout of fighting was sparked by attacks by the Ankara-backed fighters on two towns south of Manbij.

Swathes of northern Syria are controlled by a Kurdish-led administration whose de facto army, the US-backed SDF, spearheaded the fight that helped oust the Daesh group from its last territory in Syria in 2019.

Turkiye accuses the main component of the SDF, the People’s Protection Units (YPG), of being affiliated with the militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which both Washington and Ankara blacklist as a terrorist group.

Fighting has raged around the Arab-majority city of Manbij, controlled by the Manbij Military Council, a group of local fighters operating under the SDF.

According to the Observatory, “clashes continued south and east of Manbij, while Turkish forces bombarded the area with drones and heavy artillery.”

The SDF said it repelled attacks by Turkiye-backed groups south and east of Manbij.

“This morning, with the support of five Turkish drones, tanks and modern armored vehicles, the mercenary groups launched violent attacks” on several villages in the Manbij area, the SDF said in a statement.

“Our fighters succeeded in repelling all the attacks, killing dozens of mercenaries and destroying six armored vehicles, including a tank.”

Turkiye has mounted multiple operations against the SDF since 2016, and Ankara-backed groups have captured several Kurdish-held towns in northern Syria in recent weeks.

The fighting has continued since rebels led by Islamist group Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) toppled longtime ruler Bashar Assad on December 8.

King Charles donates to International Rescue Committee’s Syria aid operation

January 03, 2025

LONDON: King Charles III has helped pay for urgent humanitarian aid needed in Syria after the fall of Bashar Assad.

Charles made an undisclosed donation to International Rescue Committee UK to fund healthcare, protect children and provide emergency cash.

The king is the patron of the charity, which says Syria is facing profound humanitarian needs despite the defeat of the Assad regime by opposition forces.

Khusbu Patel, IRC UK’s acting executive director, said: “His Majesty’s contribution underscores his deep commitment to addressing urgent global challenges, and helping people affected by humanitarian crises to survive, recover and rebuild their lives.

“We are immensely grateful to His Majesty The King for his donation supporting our work in Syria. This assistance will enable us to provide essential services, including healthcare, child protection and emergency cash, to those people most in need.”

The charity said it was scaling-up its efforts in northern Syria to evaluate the urgent needs of communities. Towns and villages have become accessible to aid groups for the first time in years now that rebel forces have taken control of much of the country.

The charity said Syria ranks fourth on its emergency watchlist for 2025 and a recent assessment found that people in the northeast of the country were facing unsafe childbirth conditions, cold-related illnesses, water contamination, and shortages of medical supplies.

Charles last month said he would be “praying for Syria” as he attended a church service in London attended by various faiths.

The king met Syrian nun Sister Annie Demerjian at the event, who described the situation in her homeland after the regime had been swept from power.

Israel strikes Syrian army positions near Aleppo: monitor

January 03, 2025

BEIRUT: Israel bombed Syrian army positions south of Aleppo on Thursday, the latest such strikes since the overthrow of longtime strongman Bashar Assad, a war monitor and local residents said.

Residents reported hearing huge explosions in the area, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the strikes targeted defense and research facilities.

The observatory said that “at least seven massive explosions were heard, resulting from an Israeli airstrike on defense factories... south of Aleppo.”

There was no immediate information on whether the strikes caused any casualties.

Syrian state TV also reported about an Israeli strike in Aleppo without providing details.

A resident of the Al-Safira area told AFP on condition of anonymity: “They hit defense factories, five strikes... The strikes were very strong. It made the ground shake, doors and windows opened — the strongest strikes I ever heard... It turned the night into day.”

Since opposition forces overthrew Assad in early December, Israel has conducted hundreds of strikes on Syrian military assets, saying they are aimed at preventing military weapons from falling into hostile hands.

Iraq’s Sulaimaniyah city bans groups accused of PKK links

January 03, 2025

SULAIMANIYAH: Authorities in the Iraqi Kurdish city of Sulaimaniyah have banned four organizations accused of affiliation with the Turkish-blacklisted Kurdistan Workers Party, activists said Thursday, denouncing the move as “political.”

The four organizations include two feminist groups and a media production house, according to the METRO center for press freedoms which organized a news conference in Sulaimaniyah to criticize the decision.

PKK fighters have several positions in Iraq’s northern autonomous Kurdistan region, which also hosts Turkish military bases used to strike Kurdish insurgents.

Ankara and Washington both deem the PKK, which has waged a decades-long insurgency in Turkiye, a terrorist organization.

Authorities in Sulaimaniyah, the Iraqi Kurdistan region’s second city, have been accused of leniency toward PKK activities.

But the Iraqi federal authorities in Baghdad have recently sharpened their tone against the Turkish Kurdish insurgents.

Col. Salam Abdel Khaleq, the spokesman for the Kurdish Asayesh security forces in Sulaimaniyah, told AFP that the bans came “after a decision from the Iraqi judiciary and as a result of the expiration of the licenses” of these groups.

Israel says struck Hezbollah rocket launchers in south Lebanon

January 02, 2025

JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said it struck Hezbollah rocket launchers in south Lebanon on Thursday, despite a fragile ceasefire with the militant group.

The truce, which took effect on November 27, has been marked by mutual accusations of violations from both sides.

The Israeli military said Thursday’s strike targeted medium-range rocket launchers in the Nabatieh area.

Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported at least three Israeli strikes in the area.

“Prior to the strike a request was sent to the Lebanese armed forces to neutralize the launchers that posed a threat to Israeli civilians and... troops,” the military said in a statement.

“The launchers were struck only after the request was not addressed by the Lebanese armed forces.”

Under the terms of the ceasefire, the Lebanese army is to deploy alongside UN peacekeepers in the south as the Israeli army withdraws over a 60-day period.

Hezbollah is to withdraw its forces north of the Litani River — some 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the border — and dismantle its military infrastructure in the south.

In late December, the UN peacekeeping force expressed concern at the “continuing” damage done by Israeli forces in south Lebanon.

On Thursday, the Israeli military insisted it was acting to remove any threat to Israel “in accordance with the ceasefire understandings.”

Israeli forces withdraw from Naqoura, advance into other Lebanese villages

NAJIA HOUSSARI

January 02, 2025

BEIRUT: The Lebanese army was preparing to enter the southern coastal town of Naqoura on Thursday to retake its positions after observing the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area.

The army is paving the way for its redeployment by conducting an initial engineering survey of the town to remove unexploded ordnance.

This is the third withdrawal of Israeli forces from towns into which they advanced during the ground war in Lebanon launched by Israel on Oct. 1. The ceasefire agreement, effective since Nov. 27, stipulated that Israel would complete its withdrawal from the border areas it had entered within 60 days.

On Thursday, Israeli forces were seen withdrawing from neighborhoods in Naqoura toward Ras Naqoura and Alma Al-Shaab, conducting sweeps with machine guns during the retreat.

The area of Israeli incursion remains devoid of residents — under Israeli orders — until further notice.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese army prohibits citizens from returning to the towns until the army assumes control, seizes any weapons found, and dismantles any Hezbollah assets, in line with UN Resolution 1701.

The Lebanese army had repositioned in the town of Khiam about 10 days ago and in the town of Chamaa shortly before the end of the year.

Concurrently, Israeli Merkava tanks continued to shell homes in an area between the towns of Yater and Beit Lif in the Bint Jbeil district.

An Israeli patrol, reinforced with tanks and a bulldozer, advanced into the area on Thursday.

Israeli forces are still demolishing homes, bulldozing roads, and destroying facilities, rendering the border area from Naqoura in the west to Shebaa in the east an uninhabitable, scorched zone for years to come.

A security source said that “Israeli forces advanced for the first time since the start of the ground war to the outskirts of Beit Lif, where soldiers searched some homes and wooded areas.”

An Israeli unit also advanced from the town of Ramyah, while another unit, equipped with two bulldozers, moved toward the town of Majdal Zoun, simultaneously targeting homes and neighborhoods with artillery shelling.

Israeli reconnaissance planes continued to intrude into Lebanese airspace, flying at low altitude to the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Security reports indicated that Israeli forces set fire to several homes in the town of Aitaroun in the Bint Jbeil district on Wednesday night.

The secretary-general of Hezbollah, Sheikh Naim Qassem, said that he had given “the Lebanese state an opportunity to prove itself and take responsibility for ensuring Israel’s exit from Lebanon.”

In a speech on the first day of the new year, he affirmed that “the resistance has regained its strength,” referring to Hezbollah’s military wing.

In the same context, Hezbollah MP Hussein Hajj Hassan criticized “the daily Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement in many forms. The areas that the Israeli army could not reach during the aggression are now being accessed in many villages following the ceasefire, under the watch of the quintet committee and international public opinion,” he said.

There are 23 days left for the Israeli army to completely withdraw from the south under the agreement. However, a political observer expressed concern that “Hezbollah will be free to respond to Israeli violations after the end of the deadline, with a calculated response that does not breach Resolution 1701.”

On the political and diplomatic front, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on Thursday met with US Maj. Gen. Jasper Jeffers, head of the supervisory committee overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire, in the presence of US Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who is in Beirut, met with Berri and is scheduled to travel to Damascus on Friday to see Ahmad Al-Sharaa, Syria’s de facto leader, before returning to Beirut and leaving from the city’s Rafic Hariri International Airport to France.

Barrot and French Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu spent New Year’s Eve with UNIFIL French contingent peacekeepers in south Lebanon. Lecornu returned to France the next day.

Traditional Al-Sadu pattern forms integral part of the Saudi Arabia’s cultural fabric

January 02, 2025

RIYADH: The craft of Al-Sadu is alive across the Kingdom — not only in the depths of the Badia, where the art originated, but also in cities, houses, festivals, exhibitions, events, and art and creative galleries.

Al-Sadu is a popular cultural and civilizational symbol that embodies the distinction of the people of the Kingdom and the Arabian Peninsula.

The “traditional weaving of Al-Sadu” was included in 2020 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. A new logo inspired by Al-Sadu has been launched for the Riyadh Expo 2030.

The Saudi Council of Ministers designated 2025 as the Year of Handicrafts, in order to highlight traditional Saudi crafts and craftsmen.

The raw materials used in Al-Sadu are abundantly found in the Kingdom’s desert. They include goat hair, wool from sheep, and camel fuzz.

Bedouin women mastered the craft, and it was utilized in building Bedouin tents and meeting the needs of families with furnishings such as bedspreads and covers.

The Al-Sadu process goes through several phases. It starts with cutting the wool, sorting it, and then washing it using certain substances, such as soap or ash, to rid it of any plant matter or thorns.

The material is then dried, spun into yarn, and then dyed in natural colors extracted from plants and trees’ peels and roots, such as saffron and henna. Traditional Al-Sadu colors are black, white, red, and brown.

The pieces are then decorated with embroidery, ornaments, and creative art paintings of geometric patterns such as rectangles, circles, triangles and other distinctive forms, many of which symbolize details and connotations associated with the Bedouin.

To knit the threads and weave these unique pieces, craftswomen use the spindle, the loom, and wooden equipment such as the menfash, which is a nail-padded wooden weaving tool used to tease the wool after collecting, washing and drying it. This step is followed by the spinning process, which turns the wool into the spun yarn used in the remaining weaving stages.

The Al-Sadu weaving craft enjoys great significance in various regions of the Kingdom, including Jouf, where many artisans and productive families make unique Al-Sadu products.

Al-Sadu artisans are supported by the Jouf Municipality and governmental and non-governmental sectors, including the Maghazil Al-Sadu Association, which organizes many training programs for craftswomen, as well as exhibitions and programs aimed at marketing and familiarizing people with the art.

Dr. Hiam bint Mubarak Al-Buhairan, the association’s chairperson on the board of directors, said: “Al-Sadu is a symbol of Jouf and the Kingdom, and a national and international resource.

“The association works on protecting, developing, documenting and achieving the sustainability of Al-Sadu, for present and future generations.”

Al-Buhairan said that the association’s goals included providing professional opportunities for talent; raising awareness in the fashion industry; advising those interested in fashion; providing educational and training opportunities; supporting researchers; and contributing to the development of the sector.

The King Abdulaziz Women’s Society for Social Development in Jouf provides Al-Sadu craftswomen with support and training as part of the Made in Saudi project.

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan to enhance maritime partnership at AMAN-25

MOHAMMED AL-KINANI

January 02, 2025

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are united in their commitment to safeguard regional and global waters, using decades of naval collaboration to confront threats and foster stability.

This enduring partnership will take center stage at AMAN-2025, a multinational exercise in Karachi aimed at promoting peace and enhancing cooperation among regional and global navies.

With the participation of Saudi Arabia, the event is scheduled to take place from Feb. 7 to 11 in the capital of Sindh province on the Arabian Sea coast with the aim to also present a united front against terrorism and maritime crimes.

Speaking to Arab News, Pakistan’s Chief of the Naval Staff Adm. Naveed Ashraf highlighted the strong bond between the Royal Saudi Naval Forces and the Pakistan Navy, describing it as an “enduring maritime brotherhood.”

“The two navies have several forums for mutual interaction on issues ranging from training to information sharing and logistics. We regularly conduct exercises at sea — foremost being the Naseem Al-Bahr — seminars and training of personnel to enhance the RSNF’s potential to remain a formidable force in the Arabian Gulf and beyond,” Ashraf said.

The admiral underscored the evolution of the AMAN series since its inception in 2007, noting the exponential growth in the level and number of participants, which makes the upcoming edition distinct.

“In the last edition of 2023, Pakistan hosted 50 nations, and this time we expect even more participation from navies across the globe,” he said, adding that the former International Maritime Conference, previously an adjunct to AMAN, has now evolved into the AMAN Dialogue to allow more pragmatic, practitioner-focused discussions between naval leaders from regional and extra-regional navies on maritime security issues.

Ashraf explained how the Pakistan Navy aligns naval strategies and operational practices during such exercises, especially with increasing international participation.

“One of AMAN’s key objectives is to improve interoperability with regional and global navies. For that, we use an operational language that all participants can understand,” he said. “Collective understanding of naval strategies and operational practices is developed during planning phases and conferences held prior to the exercise.”

Emphasizing the role of AMAN-25 in fostering maritime security and stability in the Indian Ocean, he said: “Key objectives of AMAN are to foster regional and extra-regional cooperation to maintain good order at sea, enhance interoperability, act as a bridge between regions, share experiences, understand each other, and exhibit united resolve against terrorism and maritime crimes.”

Ashraf said that the understanding developed during these exercises helps organize collaborative efforts to ensure maritime security.

“In my plain view, AMAN offers a platform to showcase one’s concerns, capabilities, and willingness to cooperate,” he said.

Commenting on the effectiveness of AMAN in addressing piracy, terrorism, and other maritime crimes, Ashraf said that the AMAN Dialogue provides a forum for sharing awareness, experiences, and strategies to counter such threats.

“A significant number of harbor and sea exercises provide opportunities to improve the capacity of participating nations’ teams to combat maritime crimes effectively,” he said.

Discussing the inaugural AMAN Dialogue and its anticipated outcomes, Ashraf noted that the event has evolved from the International Maritime Conference into a practitioner-focused exchange of views.

“The dialogue seeks to promote shared understanding of maritime security issues, challenges confronting the region, and their linkages to the blue economy. It also deliberates on the efficacy of existing mechanisms for maritime cooperation and the need for innovative solutions to address evolving challenges at sea,” he said.

With maritime threats continuing to evolve, the Pakistan Navy employs technological advances to enhance interoperability with regional and extra-regional navies. Ashraf highlighted the transformative effect of technological innovation on naval warfare.

“We are paying focused attention to leveraging technology to achieve better combat readiness. That is the only way to remain effective against evolving threats. Regarding interoperability, we maintain operational linkages and information-sharing mechanisms with many countries through bilateral and multilateral arrangements, such as the Joint Maritime Information Coordination Center,” he said.

Addressing concerns about maritime pollution and climate change, the admiral said that AMAN-25 would prioritize sustainable practices at sea.

“Climate change and maritime pollution are areas of critical concern. These two issues will receive focused attention during AMAN Dialogue discussions,” he said.

On Pakistan Navy’s bilateral and multilateral agreements beyond the exercise, Ashraf said the force has a long history of cooperation with countries worldwide, even before AMAN’s inception in 2007.

“We have bilateral engagements with many navies through expert-level staff talks, training from basic to advanced levels, and exchange visits of key leadership. We became part of the Combined Maritime Forces in 2004 and have significantly contributed to collaborative security at sea,” he said.

Speaking of his vision for future maritime security amid emerging challenges such as cyber threats and artificial intelligence in warfare, Ashraf warned of the risks posed by disruptive technologies falling into the hands of non-state actors.

“I assess that threats at sea will range from ‘low-cost, high-impact’ technology to conventional weapons coupled with significant cyberattacks. That is why I say that future maritime security will greatly depend on collaborative efforts, where early warning will become a decisive factor,” he said.

Ashraf reiterated the Pakistan Navy’s commitment to maintaining deterrent capabilities against traditional and non-traditional threats. “Pakistan Navy, envisioned as a technologically adaptive military, will maintain its deterrent capability while also participating in regional and international efforts to maintain stability at sea.”

Highlighting AMAN-25’s focus on securing sea lines of communication, Ashraf emphasized the critical role of the Pakistan Navy in safeguarding these economic lifelines. Recognizing the Indian Ocean as a vital artery for global trade, including energy shipments, he said AMAN provides a platform for practical exercises, professional exchanges, and intellectual discourse on maritime security challenges in the region.

“The significance of sea lines of communication is part of the discussions during AMAN, as we alone depend 95 percent on the sea for our commerce. Regional maritime security patrols and participation in CMF’s task forces signify our role in safeguarding these economic lifelines,” he concluded.

Under the theme “Secure Seas — Prosperous Future,” this year’s AMAN Dialogue will address security challenges in the Indian Ocean, including strategic competition, regional conflicts, and piracy, as well as narco-trafficking, and the use of force by non-state actors.

The exploitation of ocean resources, climate change, and emerging technologies such as AI and unmanned systems are transforming the security landscape, posing risks to global trade and economic development.

The dialogue will focus on key themes such as maritime security in the Indian Ocean, perspectives on maritime security and cooperation, the blue economy, as well as the challenges and opportunities presented by emerging technologies.

These discussions will emphasize the need for collaboration to ensure a stable and prosperous maritime future.

How AI is driving innovation in event management and urban development in Saudi Arabia

SULAFA ALKHUNAIZI

January 02, 2025

RIYADH: Artificial intelligence is poised to play a transformative role in Saudi Arabia’s urban development, event management and visitor experiences, particularly as the Kingdom prepares to host major global events like the FIFA World Cup 2034.

AI technologies are already central to the Kingdom’s megaprojects, including NEOM and Qiddiya, and are positioning Saudi Arabia as a global leader in innovation and smart city development.

From autonomous transport systems to real-time event coordination platforms, AI-driven communication tools are enhancing efficiency and user engagement in many sectors, particularly sports and entertainment.

“The Saudi Pro League has implemented AI-powered tools like OptaVision to enhance on-field analysis and deepen fan and sponsor engagement,” Amsal Kapetanovic, country manager at Infobip KSA, a communication platform specializing in AI solutions, told Arab News.

“The Saudi Company for Artificial Intelligence has also launched SportNative, an AI-driven sports product suite that optimizes operations and harnesses the full potential of the current sports ecosystem.”

The impact of AI was evident in Riyadh on Dec. 21 when the boxing rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury featured an experimental fourth judge powered by AI, designed to eliminate bias and human error in scoring.

Beyond enhancing sports, AI is being used to manage large crowds at events, reduce queuing times, and improve navigation, enhancing experiences for visitors.

“AI-powered systems can provide personalized recommendations, real-time translations, and seamless navigation for international visitors,” Kapetanovic said.

“The Saudi Tourism Authority’s virtual travel companion, SARA, demonstrates how AI delivers real-time insights and information about attractions and events.”

NEOM, Saudi Arabia’s $500 billion smart city project on the Kingdom’s northwest coast, is incorporating AI to redefine urban living. The technology is expected to play a pivotal role in personalizing services, optimizing transport, and enhancing hospitality.

“AI will revolutionize communication technologies in projects like NEOM by facilitating intelligent, scalable, and seamless interactions,” Kapetanovic said. “In NEOM’s envisioned smart city ecosystem, AI-powered platforms could enable real-time collaboration, multilingual translation, and predictive analytics.”

AI is also expected to enhance travel and logistics in NEOM, enabling real-time route planning, efficient cargo management, and predictive maintenance of transport networks.

“These tools have the potential to empower residents, visitors and businesses through dynamic, efficient communication and logistical systems,” Kapetanovic said. “By leveraging AI, NEOM aspires to become a global benchmark for interconnected and sustainable living.”

The influence of AI extends beyond infrastructure to retail and entertainment, where conversational AI is reshaping customer interactions. Data from Infobip revealed a 26 percent increase in customer interactions during Black Friday, reflecting the growing adoption of AI in consumer communications.

“This surge in digital communication aligns perfectly with the smart city vision of projects like NEOM,” Kapetanovic said.

Qiddiya, meanwhile, another megaproject taking shape near Riyadh, is expected to redefine leisure, entertainment and events through advanced AI applications.

In November, software development company Globant and the Qiddiya Investment Company signed an agreement to develop Qiddiya’s “PLAY LIFE Connected Experience,” an AI-powered platform offering personalized itineraries, event bookings, and community engagement.

“The platform will allow visitors to book events, manage their itineraries, discover new adventures, and engage with the community through a real-time interface,” Kapetanovic said.

AI is also critical to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals, which prioritize sustainable development and quality of life. From predictive maintenance to efficient resource allocation, AI-driven infrastructure advancements are minimizing costs while accelerating progress.

“When it comes to infrastructure, AI could drive predictive maintenance and efficient resource allocation,” Kapetanovic said. “These advancements align with Vision 2030 by fostering innovation, enabling sustainable development, and elevating the quality of life.”

Riverside Studios to debut 10 Nights, a play exploring faith and self-discovery during Ramadan

2nd January

Riverside Studios in London will host the opening of the critically acclaimed play 10 Nights on 8th January, directed by Samir Bhamra and penned by Olivier Award-nominated playwright Shahid Iqbal Khan. The play, which delves into themes of faith, community and self-discovery, will explore the personal journey of Yasser during the last ten nights of Ramadan as he partakes in itikaf, a period of reflection spent in a mosque.

10 Nights has garnered attention for its insightful and often humorous portrayal of Yasser’s experiences as he grapples with the challenges of communal living, the eccentricities of his fellow worshippers, and his own internal struggles. The narrative promises to shift perceptions and break stereotypes, resonating with a diverse audience by highlighting common human experiences and emotions.

The play’s setting during Ramadan, a significant period of observance for Muslims, adds a layer of cultural depth and authenticity. Yasser’s story is punctuated by moments of light-heartedness, particularly through his cravings for chunky chips, which add a relatable touch to his spiritual and personal quest.

Director Samir Bhamra and playwright Shahid Iqbal Khan have previously collaborated on projects that emphasise cultural narratives and have been well-received for their dynamic and thoughtful approaches to storytelling. Their latest venture, 10 Nights, is expected to follow in the same vein, offering both entertainment and enlightenment to its audiences.

As 10 Nights prepares to open its doors to the public, it stands as a poignant exploration of personal growth and community interaction, set against the backdrop of a deeply spiritual time for many. The play not only aims to entertain but also to foster a deeper understanding of the nuances of faith and the universal journey of self-discovery.

Concerns raised over potential Islamic Centre in Yate

January 03, 2025

FURTHER concerns have been raised over a new Islamic centre which would include a place for daily worship, community gatherings and workshops.

The plans for Yate's first ever Islamic Cultural and Resource Centre  – at units 2 and 3 in Wellington Road – were sent to South Gloucestershire Council in October.

According to the applicant, the site would welcome locals into the space for daily worship, workshops, community engagement and gatherings.

They say that it would also 'increase footfall' for businesses in the area and that the site has 'lain under-utilised' for many years.

Scores of residents have in recent weeks raised parking concerns, while Yate Town Council has now issued its own objections.

The town council has issued parking concerns while the suitability of the location and the proposed design have also been called into question.

Yate Town Council - in its objection - said: "We strongly support the provision of an Islamic Cultural and Resource Centre to meet the needs of local residents and workers.

"We have been supporting them through the hire of a town council venue for Friday prayers and associated religious events such as Eid for the last few years.

"We have been supporting the attendees in seeking a suitable venue in Yate they could purchase.

"This application is from the landowner, and we do not consider it a suitable location.

"We oppose this application as we believe it is in the wrong location and the design is inappropriate to address the needs of the community, based on the numbers attending the current Yate prayers, parking and other ancillary issues.

"Currently attendees meet at the YMCA (owned by Yate Town Council) which can hold 70.

"At present, around 40 worshippers attend with more attending on some occasions.

"The YMCA has ample off-street parking – 23 spaces on site – and other vehicles use nearby off-street parking, such as B&Q.

"The proposed plans for this application show only two off-street car parking spaces which is not enough for the levels of vehicular use it will generate.

"On street parking in the location is already busy and further on street parking caused by this proposal will obstruct not only vehicular access but also an important bus route and access to existing amenities.

"There are concerns that people would be forced to overtake parked cars at busy residential junctions and that people would start to park on the green spaces within the vicinity as a result.

"The proposed prayer hall is smaller than the current one used and the proposal does not demonstrate how key requirements will be addressed, for example there is no indication about the location of a women’s space, which some women require.

"This was something the community expressly needed and continue to need when using the Town Council venue."

A statement – on behalf of the applicant – read: “The site has lain under-utilised for many years and has been granted approval for development.

“We envisage that local businesses will see an increase in footfall and we further estimate that this will lead to an increase in custom.

“The space would represent a fresh approach that would welcome locals into the space for daily worship, workshops, community engagement and gatherings.

“The site is in a highly sustainable location, which benefits from a wide range of amenities and a relatively dense population that can easily access the site by walking or other means of sustainable transport.

“The site is in a highly sustainable location, with many Muslims living in 15 minute walking distance."

Sara Sharif's killer father 'attacked in prison'

January 03, 2025

Alex Kleiderman

Police are investigating after the father of Sara Sharif was reportedly assaulted in prison weeks after being jailed for the 10-year-old's murder.

Urfan Sharif is said to have been attacked at Belmarsh Prison on New Year's Day by two other inmates in a cell, the Sun newspaper reported.

Sharif reportedly suffered cuts to his neck and face, and it is understood he received medical treatment inside the prison.

Sharif, 43, and Sara's stepmother were sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted at the Old Bailey last month of killing Sara at their home in Woking, Surrey.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "Police are investigating an assault on a prisoner at HMP Belmarsh on 1 January.

"It would be inappropriate to comment further while they investigate."

Belmarsh is a Category A jail in south-east London housing some of the UK's most dangerous prisoners.

According to the Sun, Sharif was assaulted with a makeshift weapon.

A Met Police spokesperson said: "Police are investigating an allegation that a prisoner was assaulted at HMP Belmarsh on 1 January.

"The victim, a 43-year-old man, suffered non-life threatening injuries."

Sara was hooded, burned and beaten during a "campaign of torture" that lasted two years before her body was found at the family home in August 2023.

Urfan Sharif was sentenced to a minimum of 40 years in prison for murder, while his wife Beinash Batool, 30, received a minimum of 33 years.

Sara's uncle, Faisal Malik, 29, was sentenced to 16 years' imprisonment for causing or allowing her death.

The three fled to Islamabad, Pakistan, with Sara's five siblings, the day before her body was found, prompting an international manhunt.

They hid out there for four weeks before returning to the UK, where they were arrested.

Twenty councillors quit Labour in Starmer protest

January 03, 2025

Twenty councillors have quit Labour in protest at the party's direction under Sir Keir Starmer.

The councillors - from Broxtowe Borough Council in Nottinghamshire - claimed the party had "abandoned traditional Labour values" and criticised policies such as cutting the winter fuel allowance for some pensioners.

Council leader Milan Radulovic, who had been a party member for 42 years, is among those walking away from Labour.

A local Labour spokesperson said the decision by some councillors to sit as independent 18 months after they were elected was "incredibly disappointing".

The councillors said they would establish a new independent party, planning to run the borough council as a minority administration in the short-term, but may need support from existing independents in order to keep control.

They claimed 10 of them had been blocked from standing for Labour at upcoming local elections for Nottinghamshire County Council after questioning the winter fuel policy.

Radulovic said of the move that he was "deeply saddened" but had been placed in an "impossible position".

"I cannot support and will not support another centrist government intent on destroying local democracy and dictating national policy from a high pedestal," he said.

He also criticised plans to reorganise local government, which could see district and borough councils scrapped.

"I believe the concentration of power in the hands of fewer people and the abolition of local democracy through the current proposals of super councils is nothing short of a dictatorship, where local elected members, local people, local residents will have no say over the type and level of service provided in their area," he said.

The group said 100 local grassroots members had also left Labour.

Broxtowe Labour Councillors - of which there were 26 prior to the announcement - said: "It is incredibly disappointing that some Broxtowe councillors have decided to leave the Labour Party and sit as independents when they were elected on a Labour ticket just over 18 months ago.

"These defections have no effect on the commitment of the remaining Labour Councillors in serving our residents.

"We, together with our Labour colleagues including MPs Juliet Campbell and Alex Norris, will continue to work to make Broxtowe a healthier, greener, safer and more prosperous place for everyone as change begins under this Labour government."

Analysis

By Hugh Casswell, political reporter, BBC Nottingham

Relations between Broxtowe Labour and the national party have been frosty for some time.

A row broke out in 2023 over the process to select a parliamentary candidate for the area, and Milan Radulovic has never been shy about speaking out.

Doubtless, some of what has prompted these defections is both parochial and personal in nature.

But the party may be more concerned that grassroots criticism of government policy extends well beyond the borders of Broxtowe.

EU state’s PM vows retaliation over Kiev’s gas ‘sabotage’

3 Jan, 2025

Slovakia is preparing to take retaliatory measures against Kiev after it halted the transit of Russian gas through its territory on January 1, according to Prime Minister Robert Fico, who called the move an act of “sabotage” by Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky.

Kiev refused to extend the contract with Russia’s Gazprom beyond the end of 2024, effectively cutting off the flow of natural gas to EU member states such as Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia.

The situation is “extremely serious and deserving of a sovereign response from Slovakia,” Fico said in a video message on Facebook on Thursday. He argued that the halt would result in Slovakia losing hundreds of millions of euros annually. Finding a replacement for Russian gas this year alone could incur at least €90 million in additional costs, according to Slovakia’s state-owned gas importer, SPP.

“The only alternative for a sovereign Slovakia is the renewal of transit or demanding compensation mechanisms that will replace the loss in public finances of nearly 500 million euros,” the prime minister said.

“I declare that [the SMER-SSD party] is ready to debate and agree in the coalition on halting supplies of electricity and significantly lowering support for Ukrainian citizens in Slovakia,” he added. There are approximately 140,000 Ukrainian refugees benefiting from various assistance programs. The country also exported 2.4 million megawatt-hours of electricity to Ukraine in the first 11 months of 2024, according to data from the Slovak grid operator.

Fico stressed that only the US, which has increased its gas exports to Europe, benefits from Zelensky’s act of “sabotage,” while Russia faces no significant harm and Slovakia bears higher energy costs. Moscow similarly stated that Ukraine’s decision only benefits the US at the expense of Washington’s supposed allies.

“The US is the main beneficiary of this redistribution in the Old World energy markets and the primary sponsor of the Ukrainian crisis,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.

Zelensky previously accused Fico of aligning with Moscow, describing the Slovak government’s stance as opening a “second energy front” against Ukraine. The Slovak Foreign Ministry dismissed these remarks as baseless “nonsense.”

The European Commission has sought to downplay the impact of the gas deal coming to an end, claiming that the EU’s gas infrastructure is sufficiently flexible to accommodate non-Russian gas supplies via alternative routes. Despite these assurances, the sudden halt has led to a surge in energy prices in Europe, reaching €50 per megawatt-hour for the first time in over a year.

‘UPDF member’ killed in Rangamati

Jan 3, 2025

An alleged member of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF-Main) was killed in a gunfire exchange with Bangladesh Army personnel in Rangamati's Naniarchar zone yesterday, said the Inter-Services Public Relations.

Acting on intelligence, the army discovered a UPDF-Main hideout in the Perachhara area during a special operation conducted around 5:50am, the ISPR added.

When the army personnel initiated a search, the UPDF (Main) members opened fire, prompting a gunfight, it said in a press release.

One UPDF (Main) member was killed, and several others were injured while the injured retreated into the dense forest, the press release said.

During a search, the army recovered an M-16 assault rifle, two rounds of MG/sniper ammunition, 90 rounds of rifle ammunition, a walkie-talkie, 12 mobile phones, and other equipment, it added.

UPDF (Main) spokesperson Angya Marma told The Daily Star that the person killed is not a member of their organisation and the name of their organisation is being falsely linked to incite internal conflict.

Jamaat’s statement on patriotism ‘ridiculous’

Jan 3, 2025

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi yesterday made an oblique reference to a recent statement by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on patriotism and termed it "ridiculous."

On December 23, speaking at an event in Rangpur, Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said there were only two tested patriotic forces in the country -- one is the army, the other is Jamaat-e-Islami.

Rizvi said the army is undoubtedly patriotic because of its vital role in the 1971 Liberation War and in the 2024 July uprising.

He then raised questions about the role of the "Islamist party" during the 1971 Liberation War.

"I want to ask the Islamist party about its role in 1971. In which sector did you fight, under which sector commander? Claiming to be the only patriotic party will make people laugh."

Rizvi made these remarks yesterday while speaking at an event at Humayun Rashid Chattar in Sylhet city.

He also criticised the government for not ensuring justice for BNP leaders and activists who were killed or disappeared.

He highlighted BNP's 15-and-a-half-year struggle for democracy, questioning the interim government's commitment to ensuring justice for victims of political repression.

Commenting on recent amendments to school textbooks, Rizvi praised the inclusion of chapters on leaders like Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Haque, Maulana Bhashani, and Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy but expressed disappointment over the exclusion of a dedicated chapter on the Liberation War.

"It is essential to have a complete history of our struggle for freedom," Rizvi said, urging the government to ensure that the Liberation War's legacy is properly documented in school books.

Hundreds of Afghan refugees families expelled from Iran and Pakistan

ByFidel Rahmati

January 3, 2025

The Ministry of Refugees has reported that 126 Afghan families have returned to the country through border routes after being expelled from Iran and Pakistan.

According to Bakhtar News Agency, on Thursday, January 2, officials from the Taliban Ministry of Refugees and Returnees reported that 126 Afghan migrant families returned to Afghanistan yesterday after being expelled from Iran and Pakistan via border routes.

The officials added that 11 families returned through Torkham, 20 families through Spin Boldak, 39 families through Nimroz, and 56 families through Herat.

This comes as Afghan migrants are increasingly being forcibly returned from neighboring countries.

It is worth noting that the expulsion and return of Afghan migrants from Iran and Pakistan has intensified recently. A professor at Allameh Tabatabai University in Tehran mentioned during a conference on January 1 that many intellectuals from Afghanistan have migrated to Iran since 2021. He referred to these intellectual migrants as human capital and noted that their migration to Western countries is a loss for Iran.

The university professor, speaking at the “Migration of Intellectuals in Iran Today: Challenges and Solutions” conference, highlighted that Afghan migration to Iran began in the 1970s, and now the second and third generations of these migrants are living in Iran. These individuals, according to the professor, have studied and grown within the country.

This forced migration highlights the growing challenges in neighboring countries, where economic and political instability are pushing refugees back to Afghanistan, a country already facing its own struggles with recovery and governance.

The plight of Afghan refugees in Pakistan and Iran is becoming increasingly urgent. The loss of human capital, especially among educated Afghan migrants, is detrimental to both the countries of origin and the host nations.

The international community needs to focus on providing more humanitarian support to these refugees, creating opportunities for safe resettlement, and addressing the root causes of displacement to prevent further suffering.
