BJP Spreads Poison In Society In Name Of Religion, Love Jihad, Flood Jihad: Jharkhand CM

24.08.24

Hemant Soren

------------

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Saturday accused the BJP of spreading ‘poison’ in society under the pretext of religion, caste, love jihad, and flood jihad.

He also claimed that there is a conspiracy underway to undermine the reservations for Scheduled Tribes (ST), Scheduled Castes (SC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC).

The chief minister made these remarks while addressing a government function in Hazaribag, where he transferred the first instalment of Rs 1,000 to the accounts of women beneficiaries under the Jharkhand MukhyamantriMaiyanSamman Yojana (JMMSY) scheme.

A total of Rs 139.40 crore was transferred to the accounts of 13.94 lakh beneficiaries of seven districts - Hazaribag, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Giridih, Koderma, Ramgarh and Chatra - on the occasion.

Making a scathing attack on the BJP, Soren said, “BJP imports leaders from Assam, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, as its leaders here are not able to handle Jharkhand.

Hitting out at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma without taking his name, Soren said “Recently a BJP CM named the flood that his state was facing, as ‘flood jihad’. Interestingly, they are now finding Hindu-Muslim, forward, backwards, tribal and Dalit even in water..

The CM further alleged that a conspiracy is going on to snatch the reservation of tribals and Dalits. A Bharat bandh call was given on Wednesday in protest against this, he said.

“In a much-planned manner, the government (central) is preparing to usurp the rights of tribal, Dalits, OBCs and minority people in the country,” Soren alleged.

“Jharkhand is one of the backward states. Society security should have been the utmost priority after the formation of the state. But our opposition remained focused on the security of businessmen without paying any attention to social security,” he said.

He said that his government is committed to the development of the state and claimed that he would take Jharkhand at par with the development of Delhi and Mumbai in his next tenure.

Malaysian PMToWest: Stop Skewing Media Narratives On Gaza Conflict, No Need To Lecture Islamic World On Democracy, Human Rights

25 Aug 2024

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivers a speech at the Malaysia Mosque for Al-Aqsa and Palestine (MM4AP) Conference, in conjunction with the International Day of the Mosque 2024, at the Federal Territory Mosque in Kuala Lumpur August 25, 2024. — Bernama pic

-------------

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that western countries do not need to teach the Muslim world about the meaning of democracy, human rights and sustainable development.

He said the western countries on the other hand need to stop trying to control the international media, merely for the sake of highlighting inaccurate narratives regarding the war in Gaza, Palestine.

He said, the western countries also need to correct the narrative and admit that the unrest in Palestine started and lasted since 1948 and not because of the Hamas attack on October 7.

“We need to be clear and cannot be determined by the western countries that want to start the narrative (continuous attacks in Palestine starting since the military actions of Hamas) on October 7.

“The continuous destruction (in Palestine) happened since 1948, followed by the direct invasion of the al-Aqsa Mosque in 1969. In fact, now the destruction continues, whether infrastructure or human and genocide. This is what happened,” he said while inaugurating the All-Malaysian Mosque Summit for al-Aqsa and Palestine at the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Mosque here, today.

Also present were the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk MohdNa’im Mokhtar and his deputy, Zulkifli Hasan as well as the co-chairman of the Malaysia Mosque Conference for Al-Aqsa and Palestine (MM4AP) Datuk Seri Ahmad Awang.

Anwar also insisted that Malaysia remains committed to not allowing companies registered with Israel to enter and carry out any activities in the country.

He said that the previous government which strongly opposed Israel’s tyranny, still allowed direct trade with such companies in the country.

“That’s why under the Madani Government, the decision was made unanimously by the Cabinet to stop all forms of direct trade (with Israel).

“Then these very people who were involved in allowing direct trade with Israel insulted us by claiming that we have relations with some companies that have links with Israel,” he said.

Thus, Anwar said the government should use its wisdom, know its strength, right and opportunity to develop internal strength and not just resist recklessly to the point of weakening the country’s arts and culture.

“Those who rebuke us on the matter of trade with any company should answer why when they were holding the reins of power, allowed direct trade with ZIM (shipping company) and Israeli companies, that for me is the main issue that should be answered.

“I don’t want to use this space just to clarify such things, but we have to emphasise, but we have to agree in one voice,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ahmad in his speech said the date August 21 was chosen by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as World Mosque Day because on that date in 1969, a Zionist attempted to burn down the Al-Aqsa Mosque and destroyed the pulpit of Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi in the incident.

“Thus, the purpose of the MM4AP in conjunction with World Mosque Day is to unite the people, take the spirit of liberating and defending the Al-Aqsa Mosque,” he said.

About 700 representatives of mosques and NGOs, ambassadors from foreign delegations, scholars and observers from several countries attended the summit organised by the Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations of Malaysia (MAPIM) in collaboration with several other parties such as the Alliance of World Masjid in Defence of Al Aqsa and the Asian Ulama Council Secretariat.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party: Scrap Hasina Government's "Secret" And "Unjust"Pact With IndiaOver The Past 15 Years

Aug 25, 2024

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has demanded cancellation of agreements signed with India over the past 15 years under deposed PM Sheikh Hasina's govt, describing them as "secret" and "unjust"

"I urge the interim govt to revoke all secret and unjust deals signed by Sheikh Hasina with India by compromising Bangladesh's independence and sovereignty," BNP joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said Saturday.

The position seems at odds with that of foreign affairs adviser MdTouhid Hossain, who had said recently the interim administration was not abandoning any agreement with any country as they were commitments made by Bangladesh. BNP's Rizvi also questioned why India ignored the "oppression" Sheikh Hasina inflicted on the people of Bangladesh.

Imams Across UK Blame Far-Right Protests, Riots, On 'Zionist Agenda' - The Telegraph's investigation

AUGUST 25, 2024

Haitham al-Haddad

--------------

Multiple Muslim preachers across the UK have used their Friday sermons to blame UK riots and unrest on "Zionists," The Telegraph's investigation found on Saturday.

During a week of violent clashes between far-right and Muslim protestors, several of the imams allegedly attributed the difficulties to a "Zionist agenda."

"It is quite well known now, publicly, due to information that has been released online, that they are Zionists and they are supporters of the state of Israel,” he said about the rioters.

“And that with the ground that has been lost over the past few months, something had to take place that would try to win some ground back for the Zionist agenda. And what better way than to paint the Muslims as being savages and killers and barbaric and so on and so forth – which in reality is a projection of the Zionist state itself.”

An imam in Blackburn told listeners that the leaders of the "acts of violence" were "Zionist people," The Telegraph added.Sheikh Ali Abbas Malik, speaking at Leicester's Masjid Al Husayn Mosque, called far-right figure Tommy Robinson a 'Zionist.' Robinson founded the English Defence League - an anti-immigrant group. He left the UK after being arrested for terrorism in July.

“Then you have Zionists such as Tommy Robinson, paid by, supported by the fathers of all genocides, the Zionist regime, to perpetuate these ideas amongst them.”

Haitham al-Haddad, in Greenwich Islamic Centre, said that rioters have a “Zionist” agenda and are attempting to “divert the attention” away from “condemning what the Zionist state Israel is doing.”

All of the mosques or Islamic religious centers mentioned are registered charities and, therefore, are governed by the Charity Commission.

Dr Paul Stott, head of security and extremism at the think-tank Policy Exchange, said that attributing all social ills to "Zionists" has become ubiquitous across the political spectrum, with far-left and -right figures saying the same thing.

“This is an argument that doesn’t give much agency to those involved in the riots and committed criminal offences,” he said, according to The Telegraph.

“Instead it shifts the blame and creates this image of Israel as puppeteers. It puts forward a view of Israel and the Jews as all-powerful and manipulative. Trying to put blame on Israel in one way is pretty desperate, in another it reeks of antisemitism.”

Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “This pattern of blaming the riots on ‘Zionists’ is as alarming as it is prevalent.“According to our representative polling, an overwhelming majority of 80 percent of British Jews consider themselves to be Zionist, and only six percent do not. They know what these preachers mean when they say ‘Zionists’.

“We urge the Charity Commission to investigate any charities that platform this sort of extremist rhetoric and divisive rhetoric, and we are submitting complaints whenever cases are brought to our attention. They cannot be left unchallenged.”

A spokesperson for the Charity Commission spokesman said: “We are aware of potential concerns at several charities relating to claims about the recent public disorder. We are assessing information to determine if there is a role for the Commission.”

"No Hindus Have Entered India From Bangladesh, ButWe Have Arrested 35 Muslim Infiltrators In The Last Month": Assam CM

August 25, 2024

Guwahati: Amid the crisis in Bangladesh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday claimed that Hindus are not attempting to enter India from Bangladesh and they are fighting there.

"Hindus are fighting and staying in Bangladesh. In the last one month, we have not detected a single Hindu person, but we have arrested 35 Muslim infiltrators in the last month. Today also, I tweeted that we arrested two people in Karimganj and pushed them back yesterday night," Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday told media at Silchar.

"We intercepted and pushed them back and fortunately or unfortunately, they belong to one community, not Hindu. Hindus are fighting and no Hindu tries to come to India. Hindus are only requesting our Prime Minister to impress upon the government of Bangladesh to ensure security," the Assam Chief Minister said.

Earlier in a post on X, the Assam chief minister said that two Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended at Badarpur railway station by Assam Police.

Pakistan invites Modi for SCO meet, PM likely to skip

Aug 25, 2024

NEW DELHI: Pakistan has invited PM Narendra Modi along with other Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) leaders for the Council of Heads of Government (CHG) in-person meeting it will host in October this year. While there is no question of Modi travelling to Islamabad, it will be of interest to see if he deputes a minister to represent India at the event, as he has done in the past, given the troubled relationship with Pakistan.

Pakistan will host the meeting on October 15-16 as it holds the rotating chairmanship of the CHG, the second highest decision-making body in the Eurasian group after the Council of Heads of State. Modi has been a regular at the heads of state summit, although he skipped the same in Kazakhstan this year apparently because it clashed with the Parliament session in early July.

In the CHG, the practice has been to nominate a minister to represent India. Foreign minister S Jaishankar participated last year in the CHG meeting in Bishkek. It’s not clear yet if the leaders will be allowed to address the event in Pakistan virtually, if they are unable to participate physically. Both India and Pakistan are full members of the Russia and China-led group which New Delhi sees as crucial for regional security and cooperation with Central Asian countries.

Unity govt’s cooperation with Umno and BN remains strong, says Anwar

25 Aug 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the relationship and cooperation of the unity government with its coalition parties Umno and BarisanNasional (BN) is still going on well.

“So for the future, we are still open to a good discussion,” he told reporters after officiating the All-Malaysian Mosque Summit for Al-Aqsa and Palestine in conjunction with the 2024 World Mosque Day Celebration at the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Mosque this morning.

He was commenting on Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s statement during the Umno General Assembly (PAU) which warned its members not to be swayed by the slanders and accusations of the opponent to the point of creating suspicion among themselves.

When delivering a policy speech before more than 2,000 delegates, Ahmad Zahid wanted every member and level of leadership including the supreme council to put aside their differences in an effort to strengthen the party so that Umno would return to dominance in the 16th general election (GE16.)

Saifuddin Nasution dismisses fresh calls for PM Anwar to prove legitimacy, says confidence already secured

25 Aug 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has dismissed fellow party member Hassan Abdul Karim’s proposal that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirm his legitimacy through a new vote of confidence, calling it “irrelevant.”

Malaysiakini reported Saifuddin as saying that Anwar’s legitimacy as prime minister was already solidified during the first session of the 15th Parliament in December 2022. Citing Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution, he explained that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong holds the authority to appoint a prime minister who commands the majority’s confidence in the Dewan Rakyat.

“Anwar’s legitimacy was confirmed with a vote of confidence by a voice vote during that session,” Saifuddin told Malaysiakini. He also highlighted that Anwar’s support was further demonstrated when the Dewan Rakyat approved the 2024 Budget with backing from more than 140 MPs.

Iran-Backed Hezbollah Says It Launched Over 320 Katyusha Rockets At Israel

August 25, 2024

Beirut: Hezbollah said Sunday it had launched more than 320 rockets at Israel overnight, targeting a string of military positions, even as Israel's military said it was carrying out pre-emptive strikes against the group.

"The number of Katyusha rockets launched until now is more than 320... towards enemy positions," a Hezbollah statement said, adding it had targeted 11 Israeli bases and barracks.

The group said the "first phase has ended with total success", adding that this phase sought to "target Israeli barracks and positions to facilitate the passage of attack drones towards targets" deep inside Israel.

Israel Attacks Lebanon In "Self-Defence", Hezbollah Responds With 300 Rockets

by Samiran Mishra

August 25, 2024

New Delhi: Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah and Israel both announced large-scale military operations against each other today. According to a statement from Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group, "more than 320" Katyusha rockets were launched, targeting key Israeli military sites.

In response to the threat, the Israeli military initiated pre-emptive strikes on targets in Lebanon. The IDF announced these strikes early Sunday, stating that they had detected preparations by Hezbollah for "large-scale" attacks on Israeli territory. Israeli Air Force fighter jets have been deployed to neutralise these threats, focusing on Hezbollah positions that posed an immediate danger to Israeli civilians.

Israel said its fighter jets attacked thousands of Hezbollah rocket launchers in south Lebanon that were aimed at northern and central Israel.

"Approximately 100 IAF fighter jets ... struck and destroyed thousands of Hezbollah rocket launcher barrels that were located and embedded in southern Lebanon," an Israeli military statement read. "Most of these launchers were aimed toward northern Israel and some were aimed toward central Israel."

This escalation comes after weeks of growing tension, with Hezbollah and its regional ally, Iran, vowing to avenge the assassination of its military commander Fuad Shukr last month. The group has called the attack on its commander as a direct provocation and an act of war.

Implementation Of Sharia Law Guarantees Society’s Prosperity: Leader Of The Islamic Emirate

August 25, 2024

In order to ensure individual and public prosperity and tranquillity, communities choose their best, committed and knowledgeable people as rulers and leaders. Islamic societies use more diligence in this area because the responsibilities of Islamic systems are more than non-Islamic ones. The Islamic system is not only responsible for protecting the worldly interests and values of the Muslim nations but in addition, it is also responsible for protecting the religious values of the people. The renowned scholars of the Islamic world called the protection of religious values one of the most important goals of the Islamic governments as these governments have the duty to preserve Islamic values and to serve the needs and interests of society in the light of religion. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, which took over power in the country three years ago, has taken effective steps for the interests and needs of the nation, and according to its responsibility, it has paid attention to the protection of religious values. Following these efforts, a few days ago, the leader of the Islamic Emirate approved a law consisting of four chapters and thirty-five articles, under which the Islamic sharia has been insisted to be implemented duly. After the publication of the law in the official Gazette of the Ministry of Justice, some heinous media and malicious people influenced by the West began to criticize this decree saying religion and the practice of religion is everyone’s personal work and the government should not put pressure on them in this regard. Although the powers and responsibilities of the religious police of the Islamic Emirate have been specified in the law and they have been asked to treat people friendly and with kindness in their work in order, the law to be implemented in a good way. The Afghan nation, which is the absolute majority of Muslims and has sacrificed a lot for the rule of the Islamic system, should refer to religious scholars instead of the media to find their problems met about issues relating to religion. In addition, to implement the law and achieve good results, religious scholars, imams of masjid, teachers of schools and universities and journalists committed to religious and national values, should fulfill their responsibilities, so that our society gets rid of misfortunes and attain lasting happiness.

After a traumatic fortnight, media in Bangladesh slowly returning to normal

KallolBhattacherjee

August 24, 2024

On August 19, a group of men arrived at the East West Media Group’s office in the heart of Dhaka and indulged in vandalism. They also hurt a female journalist and threatened those present. The media house in the Bashundhara neighbourhood is home to several leading newspaper and TV brands in Bangladesh which had navigated Sheikh Hasina’s iron-fisted media and social media policies and had managed to thrive during the past one-and-a-half decades. The expectation from the student-led uprising was that it would strengthen the civil liberty and the attack came as a shocker which drew protest from all sections of the post-Hasina interim administration. The last fortnight has not been easy for the Bangladesh media.

Revolution was being telecast throughout August 5 when viewers worldwide noticed that Ekattor TV had gone missing from YouTube. That afternoon of freedom also had a dark side and several TV channels were raided by trouble makers who accused these channels of being pro-Hasina. Ekattor TV’s office in the Baridhara neighbourhood was vandalised and burnt down and mob took over Samay TV and broke furniture forcing the channel to abandon telecasting. ATN Bangla in the heart of the busy Karwan Bazar was also attacked though it continued to function throughout the chaotic hours. Within a day, eight channels were attacked and dozens were intimidated. Fortunately, the journalists bounced back.

'Strong enemies, opponents': China shifts military focus amid mounting challenges

Aug 25, 2024

Amidst mounting challenges from nations such as the United States, China's military is shifting its focus to winning wars against "strong enemies and opponents," according to a top defence official. Chinese President Xi Jinping has directed the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to enhance its strategic capabilities to defend China’s sovereignty and developmental interests in this new directive.

Xi Jinping, while commemorating the 120th anniversary of Deng Xiaoping's birth, emphasised Deng’s legacy in building a modern China and highlighted his contributions to the Communist Party of China (CPC), the nation, and the world.

Xi highlighted Deng's focus on modernising the military by saying, "The best way to honour Deng is to continue advancing the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics that he initiated." Deng's vision for the PLA included developing it into a strong, modernised, and well-organised force, emphasising the importance of "fewer but better troops."

Bangladesh's worst floods in decades leave 5 million stranded

Aug 25, 2024

About five million people in Bangladesh were stranded by floods in low-lying areas, as strong currents washed away river embankments. The death toll rose to 15 as at least five rivers in the country faced the severest flooding since 2018, according to government data. Eleven districts were affected.

The devastating floods are the latest setback for the country of 170 million people, recently besieged with deadly political protests. "These are the worst floods we have seen in three decades," Liakath Ali, director of climate change at non-governmental organization BRAC, said. Breakdowns in telecommunications, interruptions to transport, and flooded roads and highways are complicating rescue efforts, according to BRAC. Ali said entire villages, all of the families and everything they owned -- homes, livestock, farmlands, fisheries - have been washed away."

Herat, Afghanistan — Seated in front of a searing furnace, Ghulam Sakhi Saifi teases forth sinews of molten blue glass -- the guardian of an Afghan glassblowing trade refusing to break with tradition.

"This is our art, our inheritance. It has fed us for a long time," he told AFP, resting from the work that has singed his knuckles and calloused his palms.

"We are trying to make sure it is not forgotten. If we do not pass it down, it will disappear from the whole world," said Saifi, who guesses his age is around 50.

Why US needs Bangladesh so much, a US Naval Institute article reveals

Aug 24, 2024

A few months before Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country after a coup which eventually replaced her government with an interim one, she claimed that she was offered a hassle-free re-election in the January 7 polls if she allowed a foreign country to build an air base inside the country.

"If I allowed a certain country to build an air base in Bangladesh, then I would have had no problem," Daily Star Bangladesh had quoted Hasina as saying. She, however, did not name the country that had made the offer to her but emphasised that the "offer came from a white man".

When asked about her response to the offer, the PM said she gave the same reply as she did in 2001 when the US offered to sell the country's gas to India. "I've clearly said that I'm the daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. . . we won our Liberation War, I don't want to come to power by renting part of the country or handing it over to some other country and I don't need power," she said.

At that time, many thought Hasina was talking of the United States. The sudden coup led any to believe that the US orchestrated toppling of Hasina's elected government and replacing it with one by people of its liking. Hasina has had troubled relations with it for quite some time now. The US, the biggest buyer of Bangladesh’s exports, had become more vocal in its calls for a free and fair election, imposing visa curbs on several members of Hasina’s ruling party and military officials in September.

After fleeing to India, Hasina again claimed the US played a role in her ouster. "I could have stayed in power if I had surrendered the sovereignty of Saint Martin Island and allowed America to dominate the Bay of Bengal," she said.

The US, however, has rejected the allegations of its involvement in the Bangladesh crisis, including the protests in the country that led to the deaths of hundreds of people. Refuting all the reports and rumours, the White House Press Secretary, Karine Jean Pierre, said in a media briefing a week after the coup, "So, we have had no involvement at all. Any, reports or rumours that the United States government was involved in these, in these events is simply, simply false. That is not true."

French Police arrests suspect behind fire attack on synagogue

Aug 25, 2024

French police on Sunday arrested a man suspected of setting fires and causing an explosion at a synagogue in southern France on Saturday.

"The suspected perpetrator of the criminal fires at the synagogue has been detained," minister Gerard Darmanin said on X, adding that officers who made the arrest came under fire.

The suspect's arrest comes after at least 200 police officers hunted for him as authorities said that they would be ruthless with antisemitism.

Two cars parked at the Beth Yaacov synagogue complex in the seaside resort town of La Grande Motte near Montpellier were set ablaze just after 8.00 am Saturday, the National Anti-terrorism Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

The crash on Barking Road in Plaistow, outside the Masjid Ibrahim and Islamic Centre, saw a car spin and smash into a wall and gate, after hitting a parked car.

Zulfiqar Ahmed, a volunteer who was inside the centre at the time of the crash, said it was the fourth time a car crash had happened within the vicinity of the building since 2010, with two of those causing serious damage to the mosque.

Indian PM Crosses Pakistani Airspace Sans Goodwill

Jamal Shahid

August 25, 2024

ISLAMABAD: An aircraft carrying Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an unexpected 46-minute journey through Pakistani airspace on its way back from a high-profile visit to Poland, according to media reports.

The decision by the India PM to bypass the tradition of conveying a goodwill message while flying over Pakistan sparked conversations about the strained relations between the two neighbouring countries.

Talking to Dawn, a source from the aviation industry, however, said a message of goodwill was a tradition, not a compulsion. “Plus, it could land Narendra Modi into trouble with his critics in India as soon as he would touch down,” the source said.

Ministers see ‘divisions’ in PTI ranks

Zulqernain Tahir

August 25, 2024

LAHORE: The PML-N government spokespersons on Saturday attempted to paint screenshots of alleged messages between PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan and Aleema Khan — sister of incarcerated party chief Imran Khan — as proof of a division within the former ruling party.

The screenshots apparently taken from the phone of Mr Hasan have a date stamp of June 2023 and refer to a conversation between the jailer and the former prime minister. It may be mentioned that the PTI leader was taken into custody in August 2023.

In light of these leaked messages, federal and Punjab information ministers, Attaullah Tarar and Azma Bukhari, claimed that there were two groups in the PTI — one led by Aleema and another by Bushra Bibi. According to the ministers, both groups are trying their best to take control of the PTI in the absence of Mr Khan.

Citing the “leaked WhatsApp conversation” purportedly between Aleema Khan and Mr Hasan in which the former is complaining that Bushra Bibi is “misleading the party on certain matters”, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that the PTI was facing internal divisions.

August 25, 2024

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday visited the residence of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman ahead of the upcoming sessions of both houses of parliament, fuelling speculations that the coalition government intends to table some key legislation.

President Zardari, known for his political manoeuvring during crucial times, called on the JUI-F chief a day after the Maulana reportedly agreed with the opposition PTI to have a joint strategy to give a tough time to the government in parliament. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi accompanied the president during the meeting, which was also attended by some close confidants of the Maulana.

The President Secretariat issued a brief handout, stating that the president and the Maulana discussed “the overall current political situation in the country”. Besides the handout, there was no official word from any side on the development.

Political experts consider the meeting to be a significant move, linking it with the upcoming National Assembly and Senate sessions. The president has already summoned the NA and Senate sessions on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

Amendment in the works to shuffle high court judges sans their consent

Malik Asad

August 25, 2024

ISLAMABAD: The government is likely to make changes to a constitutional provision regarding the transfer of judges from one high court to another without seeking their consent.

Sources privy to deliberations held in the law ministry said that an amendment to Article 200 of the Constitution — which pertains to the transfer of high court judges — is one of the components of the so-called ‘Constitutional Package’ being finalised by the government’s legal hawks.

According to the existing law, the President “may transfer a judge of a High Court to another High Court, but no judge shall be so transferred except with his consent and after consultation by the President with the Chief Justice of Pakistan and the Chief Justices of both High Court”.

Sources said the proposed amendment to this article would omit the word “his consent”. Subsequently, the government with the consultation of the CJP and the chief justices of the borrowing and lending courts could be able to transfer a judge.

Utility Stores Corporation to be ‘restructured’, not shut down, says minister

Khalid Hasnain

August 25, 2024

LAHORE: As employees of the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) staged protests in several parts of the country, Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain on Saturday dismissed the impression that the utility stores are being closed, insisting that the government plans to “restructure” the organisation.

“The impression that utility stores are being shut down is incorrect. The USC is being restructured to ensure that only deserving people receive relief and price discounts on essential food items and groceries,” the minister stated while speaking to the media after inaugurating the 9th Colour and Chem Expo at the Lahore International Expo Centre.

The government was already providing subsidies to the needy through the Baitul Maal and Benazir Income Support Programme, Mr Hussian said, stressing that subsidy misuse has been a persistent issue in the country.

In Muzaffargarh, USC staff held a protest against the proposed closure of the organisation. Several employees gathered outside the press club, chanting slogans against the government’s move, which they said would leave thousands jobless. They warned of launching a larger movement if the government does not reverse its decision.

Iranian hackers targeted WhatsApp accounts of staff in Biden, Trump administrations, Meta says

August 24, 2024

WASHINGTON (AP) — The same Iranian hacking group believed to have targeted both the Democratic and Republican presidential campaigns tried to go after the WhatsApp accounts of staffers in the administrations of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, Meta Platforms said Friday.

Meta said it discovered the network of hackers, who posed as tech support agents for companies including Microsoft and Google, after individuals who received the suspicious WhatsApp messages reported them. Meta’s investigators linked the activity to the same network blamed for the hacking incident reported by Trump’s campaign.

The FBI this week said a hack by Iran of the Trump campaign and an attempted breach of the Biden-Harris campaign was part of a broader Iranian effort to interfere with the U.S. presidential election.

Some people in distress on a fibreglass boat had to be plucked from the water.

New wave of cholera in Sudan threatens hundreds of thousands of refugees

25-08-2024

Sudan has been hit by a deadly cholera outbreak that has infected hundreds of people in recent weeks, health authorities said. As of the start of this week, nearly two dozen people had died from the disease.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported that the spread of the disease is of particular concern in states hosting refugees - mainly Kassala, Gedaref, and Jazirah states.

Cholera is a fast-developing, highly contagious infection that causes diarrhea, leading to severe dehydration and possible death within hours when not treated, according to the WHO.

North America owes its wealth to brutality of slavery: Canadian expert

25-08-2024

The residual influence of slavery remains in North America today, said a Canadian racism expert on the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, which fell on Friday.

June Francis, chair of Anti-Racism Data Committee of British Columbia, director of the Institute for Black and African Diaspora Research and Engagement and a professor at Simon Fraser University (SFU), said that the trauma of the slave trade left a mark of injustice in Canada that is difficult to clear.

"Much of the wealth that we see in all of North America can be traced back to this forced bondage that allowed all that labor to be subjugated to and given to the white masters. So Canada benefited from that initially because Canada was part of that," Francis said in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV).
