International Yoga Day celebrated in Saudi Arabia

10th edition of International Yoga Day was observed in Riyadh on Friday as the
theme for this year’s Yoga Day was “Yoga for Self and Society”. (Supplied)
------------
JEDDAH:
June 21 was the International Day of Yoga. This year’s edition, the 10th, was
held under the theme “Yoga for Self and Society,” emphasizing the importance of
a holistic approach to health and wellbeing.
To
mark the occasion in Riyadh, a celebration was held at the Prince Faisal Bin
Fahad Olympic Complex in collaboration with the Saudi Yoga Committee and the
Ministry of Sports of Saudi Arabia. India’s Ambassador to the Kingdom Dr.
SuhelAjaz Khan; Nouf Al-Marwaai, president of the Saudi Yoga Committee and
Padma Shri Awardee; and Rajashree Choudhary, president of the International
Yoga Sports Federation, were among those in attendance.
Al-Marwaai
said: “It is with great joy and pride that we welcome all to the 10th
International Yoga Day celebration here in Saudi Arabia. Today marks a
significant milestone in our journey of promoting health, harmony and peace
through yoga.
“Yoga
has grown in Saudi Arabia and it is becoming a phenomenon embraced by thousands
for its profound benefits to the mind, body and spirit,” she added.
Emphasizing
the importance of the inclusion of yoga in daily life in Saudi Arabia,
Choudhary — who is visiting Saudi Arabia for the first time — told Arab News
that she feels happy that, over the past few years, Saudi Arabia has witnessed
a surge in the popularity of yoga.
“I
was following Saudis’ acceptance of yoga because Nouf Al-Marwaai’s contribution
to yoga in Saudi Arabia is well-known. We were following each other because we
had the same dreams and difficulties. She took the initiative to bring me to
Saudi Arabia and I am here as a guest of the Ministry of Sports. I participated
in the 10th International Day of Yoga and experienced an enormous love of yoga.
This year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Self and Society’ perfectly exemplifies the growth
of yoga today in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
She
added: “I am glad that I am here and I will stand for women’s and children’s
empowerment. I am sure that Vision 2030 in Saudi Arabia will bring more
positive change and will empower the younger generation.”
Regarding
the IYSF’s upcoming cooperation with the SYC, she said: “IYSF is working with
several yoga federations around the world to develop Yogasana into an official
Olympic sport. Increased awareness will encourage existing practitioners to
sharpen their skills through training, dedication, and devotion, and will
inspire new practitioners.
“The
IYSF aims to govern this organization with the sole mission of promoting,
unifying, and increasing interest in Yogasana globally. The SYC is definitely a
member of our federation and active in our programs,” she added.
As
part of the International Day of Yoga celebrations, the Indian Embassy in
Riyadh also organized a seminar on June 20, in collaboration with the SYC and
the Ministry of Sports.
In
December 2014, the UN designated June 21 as the International Day of Yoga to
promote global awareness of the benefits of yoga practice.

‘Why
Only 300 Of 50,000 Arrested Boko HaramTerrorists Have Been Prosecuted’
By
Kingsley Omonobi
June
23, 2024
Following
reports that over 50,000 Boko Haram terrorists have been arrested by the Nigerian
Army and other security agencies and only about 300 have been prosecuted,
Director General of the Nigeria Army Resource Centre, Major General Garba Wahab
(retd), has urged the judiciary to expedite judgement on terrorists, saying it
is one of the ways through which insecurity can be eradicated in the country.
Wahhab,
who spoke during a two-day round table discussion in Abuja, themed:
‘Asymmetrical National Security Challenges, the Army, and National
Development’, said the judiciary must perform its sacred role of punishing
terrorists to deter impunity.
He
said: “One of the ways to curb insecurity is that the judiciary must be alive
to its responsibilities and the local government authorities should be allowed
to function.
“It
is regrettable that in a Nigerian court, it will take 20 years for a case to be
adjudicated upon and persons who have commited clear and glaring offences get
just punishment. That’s what is happening. A former president mentioned it
saying It takes 10 years for a simple case of stealing to be decided in
Nigeria.”
Wahab
insisted that local governments should be allowed to function, pointing out
that localising security in the country would also help in curbing crime.
He
added: “What we are asking those in government to do is to find a way of
ensuring that the judiciary and local government are allowed to function well.
When you allow local government to function, then you can localise the security
architecture.
“In
so doing, insecurity issues will be addressed at the battalion level. We should
go to the battalion level because these battalions serve the state and so they
relate with the state and local government. We shouldn’t wait till we get to
divisional headquarters whenever there is a problem. Divisional headquarters in
most cases are busy attending to five or six states.”

-------------
NIBONG
TEBAL, June 23 — Elections are not the venue for certain parties to determine
voters’ religious beliefs, but should instead be a platform for political
parties to explain their plans and agenda for the people should they emerge
victorious, PartiKeadilan Rakyat (PKR) secretary general Datuk Seri Saifuddin
Nasution Ismail said.
“Election
campaigning means both parties go up against each other with their policies,
plans, agenda when they get the right to administrate and what are their
efforts to help the people.
“Elections
are not the venue for us to say ‘Choose us and it means you’re a Muslim and if
you don’t, you’re not our kin’. You can’t do that. This isn’t out determining
voter’s beliefs but about how we run the country,” he said during a speech at
the first Unity Talk programme for the Sungai Bakap by-election at Taman
Widuri, Sungai Jawi here last night.
Parti
Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Amanah strategic
director Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad, Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri
Zambry Abd Kadir and PakatanHarapan (PH) candidate for the Sungai Bakap
by-election JoohariAriffin were also present at the talk.
“You
need to have strong and trustworthy leadership skills to be a state leader, so
it’s good to elect him (Joohari) as your representative here (Sungai Bakap).
“...
insya-Allah there’ll be a lot of advantages if Sungai Bakap voters elect the
unity government candidate as there are many executive councillors in the state
government who can help out, along with those at the federal level,” he added.
Meanwhile,
Mohamad urged “old friends” from Barisan Nasional (BN) to support the Unity
Government candidate to ensure that victory will be theirs.
“I
was also with BN previously. BN works hard, if everyone votes our candidate
from the Unity Government, I’m convinced we can win even if our rivals play up
racial issues,” he said.
PH
candidate Joohari is going against Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Abidin Ismail in a
straight fight, with polling day set for July 6.

‘Bangladeshi-Origin

By
HT News Desk
Jun

Assam
chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that the Bangladeshi-origin
minority community members ‘overwhelmingly’ voted for the Congress in the just
concluded Lok Sabha elections, without considering the ‘developmental work done
for them by the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the state.’
"If
we analyse the 39 per cent votes of the Congress, it is not spread across the
state. Fifty per cent of it is concentrated in 21 assembly segments which are
minority dominated. In these minority-dominated segments, BJP got 3 per cent
votes," he claimed while speaking at the felicitation programme of the
winning BJP candidates.
Continuing
further, Sarmasaid,"This proves that Hindus do not indulge in communalism.
If anyone indulges in communalism in Assam, it is only one community, one
religion. No other religion does it."

Taqadum Party sets conditions for accepting "Sunni Unity" Initiative
2024-06-22
Shafaq
News/ The Taqadum Party, led by former Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi,
announced on Saturday that it will only accept the "Sunni Unity
Initiative," launched by the head of the Azm Alliance, Khamis Al-Khanjar,
if it recognizes the party's majority within the Sunni community.
Taqadum
leader Mohammed al-Alawi told Shafaq News Agency, "Mohammed al-Halbousi's
stance is clear. He supports any initiative that unites the Sunni house,
provided it respects the rights of the Sunni majority (Taqadum). Any initiative

The

Egypt’s
government announced on Saturday that it will prosecute 16 travel agencies and
revoke their licenses over the deaths of Egyptians during this year’s Hajjin
Mecca.
Over
1000 people are believed to have died during the pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia,

Egyptian.
Temperatures
in Mecca, Islam's holiest city, rose to 51.8 degrees Celsius (125 degrees
Fahrenheit) during the course of the annual event, which started late last
week.
After
an emergency meeting on Hajj deaths, the Egyptian government said the high
death toll among Egyptian pilgrims this year was a direct consequence of some
travel agencies disregarding the rules by sending "unregistered"

How
Nigerian govt infringed on Islamic group’s right to assembly amid extrajudicial
killings
By
Qosim Suleiman
June
22, 2024
Shortly
after Juma’at prayers on 14 April 2023, Umar Usman, 65, received a phone call
that shook everyone in his family.
His
son, 19-year-old Yakubu Umar, had been shot by the police during the Quds Day
procession in Abuja, the voice on the phone told him.
“I
couldn’t cry immediately until the next morning when they started praying for
his corpse,” Narjis, the deceased’s sister, narrated at their home in Suleja,
Niger State.
Earlier
that day, Yakubu had joined other members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria
(IMN), reputed as the largest organisation of Shia Muslims in Nigeria, for a
planned procession to commemorate the Quds Day in the Wuse area of the nation’s
capital. Many Shia Muslims across the globe commemorate Quds Day on the last
Friday of Ramadan to express support for Palestine in its conflict with Israel.
The
police started picking up persons suspected to be members of the group
immediately after the prayers at the Juma’at mosque in Wuse Zone 3.

the Israel-Hamas war broke out on October 7, Lebanon's powerful Hezbollah

near-daily fire with Israel across the southern border.

anonymity.
The
group has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks against Israel, including
joint operations with Hamas in Lebanon. It is estimated to number around 500
men.

African
Union Agrees to New Force to Fight Islamists in Somalia
Jun
22, 2024
(Bloomberg)
-- The African Union endorsed the creation of a new force to replace more than
13,000 troops due to leave Somalia by year-end, amid fears that al Qaeda
militants in the country are growing in power.
Troops
from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Burundi and Djibouti, part of the so-called
African Union Transition Mission, are due to leave by the end of December.
They’ve fought al-Shabaab since 2006 as the Islamist group tries to overthrow
Somalia’s government.
While
Mogadishu has sought to take control of its own defense strategy, the African
Union said Somalia had requested a new force to come into effect from January,
to “further degrade al-Shabaab” while ensuring the “orderly transfer of
security responsibilities to the Somali authorities.”
“The
post-ATMIS mission must be given a strong political mandate, with scope, size,
posture, composition, and duration aligning with existing security threats,”
the AU said in a statement following meetings this week in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia’s capital.

Iran
Overturns Rapper ToomajSalehi's Death Sentence For Criticizing The Government
JUNE
22, 2024
DUBAI,
United Arab Emirates — Iran's Supreme Court overturned the death sentence of a
government critic and a popular hip-hop artist, ToomajSalehi — who came to fame
over his lyrics about the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini in 2022 — his
lawyer Amir Raisian said Saturday.
In
a post on social media platform X, Raisian said that the court assessed the
case and found Salehi's past six years in prison as "excessive" since
the punishment was more than what was allowed by law. He added that another
branch of the court will now review the case.
Salehi's
death sentence in April by a Revolutionary Court in the central city of Isfahan
created confusion as even Iran's state-run IRNA news agency and the judiciary
did not formally confirm it. Such courts in Iran often involve closed-door
hearings with evidence produced secretary and give limited rights to those on
trial.

Islamic
Group leader killed in Israeli airstrike in E. Lebanon
2024-06-22
A
leader from the Islamic Group was killed on Saturday in an Israeli airstrike
targeting a vehicle in the village of Al-Khyara, located in the Western Bekaa
District of eastern Lebanon, a Lebanese military source told Xinhua.
The
source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said an Israeli drone fired two
air-to-surface missiles at a Cherokee SUV in Khyara, killing Ayman Hashem
Ghazme, a field leader of the Islamic Group who was driving the car.
The
source added that members of the Civil Defense had put out the fire in the car
and worked with the Lebanese Red Cross to transport the body to a hospital in
the Bekaa region.
Tensions
along the Lebanon-Israel border escalated on October 8, 2023, following a
barrage of rockets launched by the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah toward Israel
in solidarity with Hamas' attack on Israel the day before. Israel then
retaliated by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon.

Legendary

Legendary
musicians Roger Waters and Yusuf Islam, formerly Cat Stevens, performed
alongside rapper Lowkey at St. Pancras Church in London at a concert Friday
that was dedicated to raising awareness and solidarity for Palestine.
Waters,
known for his activism and poignant musical commentary, delivered a stirring
rendition of "Wish You Were Here," reinterpreting the song as an
anthem for Palestine.
"I'm
sure many of you, like me, live on the brink of tears," Waters told the
crowd. "We live on that uncomfortable edge, on the brink of tears because
we feel empathy for our brothers and sisters in Gaza and the other occupied
territories in Palestine. People sometimes think: 'Wish You Were Here' is a
lament for a dead childhood friend of mine. Guess what? Sometimes it is, but
not tonight. Tonight is for Palestine. Tonight, my song, 'Wish You Were Here'
is about choices. If you think you can tell heaven from hell, you can choose
one or the other on polling day, the fourth of July."

Planes
flying from Lithuania to SE Asia mysteriously land in Iran
JUNE
23, 2024
Iran
smuggled two planes out of Lithuania, the country's public broadcaster
announced on Thursday. The planes were due to fly to Sri Lanka and the

The
two Airbus A340s, leased by the Gambian company Macka Invest, were due to fly

transponders—which enable them to be identified on air traffic control
radars—were turned off upon entry into Iranian airspace. The aviation data site
ch-aviation reported that one plane had landed at Mehrabad airport in Tehran
and another at Konarak airport in Chabahar.
The

Iran-Backed
Houthis Claim Attack On 4 Ships At Israel Port: Report
Jun
23, 2024
Yemen's
Houthis said on Sunday that they carried out a joint military operation with
the Islamic Resistance in Iraq militant group and targeted four ships at
Israel's northern Haifa port.
In
a televised statement, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said that the
two groups launched a drone attack on two cement tankers and two cargo ships at
the Haifa port on Saturday, as reported by news agency Reuters. The
spokesperson said that the ships belonged to companies that "violated the
ban on entering the ports of occupied Palestine."
The
Israeli military did not immediately comment on the latest claim made by the
Houthis, though it had previously denied a similar claim made by the Houthis
early in June.
Saree
also said the Houthis had attacked the Shorthorn Express in the Mediterranean
using drones as part of the group's campaign to disrupt shipping in key
waterways, which they say is an act of solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza
war.
"The
two operations successfully achieved their objectives, and the strikes were
precise and direct," Saree said, as quoted by Reuters. In dozens of
attacks, the Iran-backed Houthis have sunk two vessels, seized another, and
killed at least three seafarers.

ECP
defends decision to deny SIC reserved seats
Nasir
Iqbal
June
23, 2024
ISLAMABAD:
As the Supreme Court resumes hearing on Monday (tomorrow) the Sunni Ittehad
Council’s (SIC) challenge to the Peshawar High Court’s March 14 verdict, the
Election Commission of Pakistan on Saturday justified its decision to deny the
party reserved seats for women and non-Muslims.
In
a concise statement furnished before the apex court through senior counsel
Sikandar Bashir Mohmand, the ECP argued that the SIC did not meet the criteria
and is therefore not eligible for reserved seats for women and non-Muslims on
account of not being a political party within the meaning of articles 51(6)(d),
56(6)(e) and 106(3)(c) of the Constitution, as well as the election programme’s
requirement to furnish a list of priority (Form 66) in a timely manner for the
reserved seats.
The
ECP also pointed out that Article 3 of the SIC constitution limits the party’s
membership to adult Muslims only, imposing certain restrictions that violate
Articles 17, 20 and 25 of the constitution. Based on this alone, the commission
argued that the SIC is not entitled to any reserved seats, particularly those
for women and non-Muslims.
A
full-court bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa and
comprising Justices Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Munib Akhtar, Yahya Afridi,
Amin-ud-Din Khan, Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Ayesha A. Malik,

ISLAMABAD:
Lawmakers from the treasury and the opposition on Saturday continued to assail
the tax-loaded federal budget in the National Assembly, as the PPP, a key
partner in the ruling coalition, ended its boycott of the proceedings but only
to join the fray, highlighting a number of ‘shortcomings’ in the proposed budget.
It
was the third consecutive day of the debate on the budget, presented by Finance
Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on June 12, and the lower house continued to
witness members from both sides of the aisle trading barbs and making personal
attacks against each other.
There

India
signals interest in Bangladesh’s Teesta project eyed by China
By
Rezaul H Laskar
Jun
22, 2024
PM
Modi said that an Indian technical team will soon visit Dhaka for talks on the
conservation and management of the Bangladeshi section of the Teesta river.
India
on Saturday signalled its interest in taking up the conservation of the Teesta
river within Bangladesh, a $1-billion project being eyed by China, even as
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina
unveiled a slew of initiatives to enhance cooperation in trade, digital issues
and connectivity.
Hasina,
who was among leaders of seven regional countries invited to the inauguration
of Modi’s third term on June 9, returned to New Delhi within a fortnight as the
first foreign leader to make a bilateral incoming visit. Officials from both
sides said this reflected India’s continued focus on its “Neighbourhood First”
policy and the importance of bilateral ties.
Following
talks with Hasina, Modi told a joint media interaction that an Indian technical
team will soon visit Dhaka for talks on the conservation and management of the
Bangladeshi section of the Teesta, one of 54 rivers shared by the two
countries.
“Fifty-four
shared rivers connect India and Bangladesh. We have been cooperating on flood
management, early warning [and] drinking water projects. We have decided to
start negotiations at the technical level for renewal of the Ganga Water Treaty
of 1996,” he said, speaking in Hindi and referring to a 30-year pact valid
until 2026.
People
familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity that India’s
announcement regarding its interest in Bangladesh’s long-pending plan to dredge
and develop the Teesta river is significant in view of pressure from China over
the project. Beijing has submitted a formal proposal for the project, with an
estimated cost of $1 billion, while New Delhi has informed Dhaka about its
concerns regarding the work being awarded to any Chinese firm.

immigration
By

Nigel
Farage is facing calls to suspend a Reform UK candidate who blamed powerful
Jewish groups for “agitating” to bring “third world Muslims” into Britain.
Ben
Aston, standing in Bournemouth West,
made the claim in a now deleted post which hit out at Jewish voices
complaining about feeling unsafe in this country as a result of pro-Palestine
protests.
Responding
to the question as to “how are Jews meant to feel safe in the UK?”, Ashton
wrote:”“These endless takes from Jews are horrendous. Many of the powerful
groups agitating for the mass import into England of Muslims from the Third
World are Jewish. The resultant societal problems have been visible for
decades.”

Outrage
as UK politician says West provoked Ukraine war
Jun
23, 2024
LONDON:
Nigel Farage, leader of Britain's anti-immigration Reform UK party, faced
strong criticism Saturday after saying that the West provoked Russia's invasion
of Ukraine. In an interview with the BBC on Friday, Farage said "we've
provoked this war", while adding that "of course" it was Russian
president Vladimir Putin's "fault".
Prime
Minister Rishi Sunak told reporters that Farage's claim was "completely
wrong and only plays into Putin's hands", likening the comments to
"appeasement".
Labour
leader Keir Starmer, who looks set to take Sunak's job after an election next
month, said Farage's comments were "disgraceful". "Anyone who is
standing for parliament ought to be really clear that Russia is the
aggressor", he told reporters on the campaign trail.

Greece
wildfires: 13 arrested after Hydra island's only pine forest set ablaze by
fireworks
Jun
23, 2024
Greek
authorities arrested 13 people on Saturday after fireworks launched from a yacht
started a wildfire on the island of Hydra, near Athens.
The
fire, which started late Friday, was caused by fireworks launched from a boat.
It burned the only pine forest on Hydra in an area difficult to access without
any roads, according to Hydra's firefighting team on Facebook, as per an AFP
report. "Greece has toughened its penalties for arson, with perpetrators
now facing up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to 200,000 euros
($214,000)," the fire service added in their statement.
Officials
conducted an inquiry leading to the arrest of 13 people, who will be presented
before a prosecutor on Sunday, according to a fire service statement. "The
arrests come after allegations that the forest fire was sparked by fireworks
launched from the yacht on Friday night," an official told Reuters.
This
comes during a season marred by deadly summer fires in Greece, with at least
one person already reported dead this week. The mayor of Hydra expressed
outrage and promised legal action against those responsible. "Outrage,"
he said, while urging legal action against the "irresponsible"
individuals behind the fireworks. Speaking to the ERT public broadcaster, the
mayor said, "Authorities had to create more anti-fire zones and roads
through forests."

Triangle
Muslims Show ‘Community’ And ‘Unity’ At Joint Eid Festival In Raleigh
23-06-2024
Thousands
of Muslims from across the Triangle came together for the first time on
Saturday to celebrate one of the most important holidays in their faith. Eleven
Triangle mosques and Islamic organizations joined forces to hold what was
billed as North Carolina’s largest Eid festival. More than 8,000 people were
expected to walk through the Jim Graham Building at the N.C. State Fairgrounds
in Raleigh to celebrate Eid Fest 2024. “It’s wonderful,” said Tanko Braimah of
Durham, who came to the festival with his wife and two daughters. “It shows the
unity within the Islamic community.” The festival comes as the Muslim community
continues to rapidly grow in North Carolina. North Carolina has the
11th-largest Muslim population of any U.S. state with 130,000 people. Festival
organizers say 30,000 Muslims live in the Triangle area.

Eight
from ship that crashed into Baltimore bridge leave for India
Jun
23, 2024
WASHINGTON:
Eight Indian crew members of the cargo ship 'Dali' that crashed into a famed
Baltimore bridge in March left for India on Friday after nearly three months on
the mammoth vessel. According to Baltimore Maritime Exchange, four of the 21
crew members are still on board the 984-foot cargo ship MV Dali, which is tentatively
scheduled to leave Friday evening for Norfolk, Virginia.
The
rest of the crew has been moved to a service apartment in Baltimore and will
remain there pending an investigation. Notably, 20 of the crew members were
Indian nationals. They were on board the MV Dali Cargo, which struck the
pillars of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge resulting in its collapse and
the death of six construction workers in the tragic incident. Dali will undergo
repair at Norfolk.
The
departure of eight Indian crew members including a cook, a fitter and seamen
follows a deal approved by the judge. None of these are officers. The rest 13
would remain in the US, mainly because of the pending investigations.
"They're anxious, under considerable stress considering they don't know
the future. They don't know when they'll see their family again or how they'll
be treated here," Rev Joshua Messick, director of the Baltimore
International Seafarers' Center and chaplain for the Port of Baltimore told
CNN.

Former US president Donald Trump urged evangelical Christians Saturday to vote
en masse for him in November, vowing to "aggressively" protect their

the religious right, promising -- and delivering -- on some of their biggest
priorities, including by appointing Supreme Court justices who helped overturn
the federal right to abortion.
"The
evangelicals and the Christians, they don't vote as much as they should,"
Trump told hundreds of supporters at a Washington conference put on by the
