Bengal man in Thane pushed into Bangladesh even as family, govt submit proof of his citizenship
by Ravik Bhattacharya , Vijay Kumar Yadav
June 16, 2025
Mehbub Sheikh worked as mason in Thane.
-------
A 36-year-old man from West Bengal, who had gone to Maharashtra for work, was picked up by Maharashtra Police, suspecting him to be an illegal Bangladesh migrant, and was pushed across the border into the neighbouring country by the Border Security Force (BSF) in the wee hours of Saturday.
The Maharashtra Police and the BSF, according to the West Bengal government, pushed Mehbub Sheikh into Bangladesh despite intervention from the West Bengal Police, state Migrant Welfare Board and submission of necessary documents to prove his Indian citizenship.
“After Sheikh’s family approached us, we contacted the Maharashtra Police. All the (required) documents were sent to them. They didn’t even bother to inform the West Bengal government, and Sheikh was pushed into Bangladesh by the BSF,” Samirul Islam, chairman of West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board, told The Indian Express.
Sheikh’s family said they are residents of Hossainnagar village in Mahisasthali gram panchayat area of Bhagabangola in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The 36-year-old worked as a mason in Maharashtra.
“For the past two years, he has been working in Maharashtra. He used to stay in the Mira Road area of Thane near Mumbai. Five days ago (Wednesday, June 11), while he was having tea, police picked him up, suspecting him to be a Bangladeshi, and took him to Kanakia police station,” Sheikh’s younger brother Mujibur told The Indian Express over the phone from Murshidabad.
“He called us from Kanakia police station. We immediately informed the local police and administration, as well as our panchayat pradhan and the migrant welfare board. They said they were in touch with the Maharashtra Police. By Friday, we sent all documents to Maharashtra Police, including Mehbub Sheikh’s voter card, Aadhaar Card, ration card, and even our family tree, running generations certified by the panchayat,” said Mujibur.
Shabbir Ahmed, pradhan of Mahisasthali gram panchayat, said that they rushed to Siliguri after coming to know that Mehbub Sheikh had been sent to a BSF camp there.
“On Friday (June 13), we were informed by the local police station that Maharashtra Police alerted them that Mehbub has been sent to a BSF camp in Siliguri. My brother Mujibur rushed to the camp. But we were not entertained there. They did not even listen to us,” the pradhan said.
According to the family, Mehbub Sheikh called them on Saturday (June 14), informing them that BSF pushed him into Bangladesh at 3.30 am.
“He said that he was pushed into Bangladesh by the BSF around 3.30 am on Saturday. He took shelter in a village from where he made the call. He was crying. He has a wife and three children. We just want him back. We don’t know how long he can survive in Bangladesh,” said Mujibur.
The Maharashtra Police defended their action, saying Mehbub “failed” to give documents to prove his nationality, adding that they don’t consider Aadhaar and PAN cards for proving citizenship.
“We are not at fault… On the police commissioner’s order to take action against illegal Bangladeshi migrants, we detained many suspects, including Mehbub Sheikh, on June 11. We demanded documents from them that could prove their nationality. Generally, we don’t consider Aadhaar and PAN cards for this purpose, as they can be fraudulently obtained. Hence, we asked him to produce his birth certificate or any strong proof. But he failed to produce the same and also did not provide any other document or his family’s documents to support his claim that he is Indian,” Meghna Burade, Senior Inspector at Mira Road police station in Thane, said.

Large MuralsFeaturing the Slogan “Iran, The Zulfiqar of Ali (AS),” In Tehran Depict Iran’s Readiness for Retaliation Against Israel’s Aggression
June 15, 2025
TEHRAN – Following the Zionist regime's aggression against Iran and the response of the Islamic Republic to the aggressors, the major murals in Tehran have been changed.
----------
On Saturday, June 15, which coincided with Eid al-Ghadir, the new mural at Tehran’s Enqelab Square, which is the largest mural in the country, was unveiled, featuring the slogan “Iran, the Zulfiqar of Ali (AS),” ISNA reported.
The mural focuses on the memory of the conquest of Khaybar and includes the phrase: “We are the heirs of Haydar the breaker of Khaybar / It is our turn to uproot the gate.”
The phrase “Zulfiqar of Ali (AS)” refers to Zulfiqar, Imam Ali’s legendary double-edged sword, symbolizing courage, strength, justice, and righteousness.
Haydar is one of the epithets of Imam Ali (AS), the first Imam of Shia Muslims. Haydar means lion in Arabic, and it reflects his renowned bravery, strength, and battlefield prowess.
One of the most legendary episodes in Imam Ali’s life is his heroism at the Battle of Khaybar (circa 628 CE), which took place between Muslims led by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the Jewish tribe in the fortresses of Khaybar in the Arabian Peninsula.
The fortress was heavily fortified and considered nearly impenetrable. After several unsuccessful attempts by Muslim warriors, Imam Ali (AS) was chosen by the Prophet to lead the final battle.
Imam Ali (AS) charged into the battle, tore off the gate of the fortress with his bare hands, and used it as a shield. His actions led to the Muslims’ victory. This moment became a symbol of divine strength, justice, and fearlessness.
On the same day, the new mural at Valiasr Square also drew attention for its message regarding revenge on Israel.
On this mural, set against a red background, a phrase is written in both Persian and Hebrew: “Let us pour down upon them in the night; like sharp-winged eagles who know neither day nor night.”
Before the fulfillment of Operation True Promise 3, another mural at Valiasr Square had been inspired by the Leader’s message of condolence and prominently featured the phrase “A harsh response, by Allah’s permission” as the centerpiece of its design.
In response to an Israeli aggression on Iranian territory that resulted in the martyrdom of senior military commanders, prominent scientists, and innocent civilians, including children, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has launched a large-scale retaliatory operation, codenamed “True Promise 3,” targeting multiple Israeli military and air bases.
The operation commenced on the auspicious night of Eid al-Ghadir. The IRGC’s statement declared that, following the “aggressive and criminal” Israeli strike on Iran, the Corps, acting as the defensive and offensive arm of the Iranian nation, carried out a precise and forceful response against dozens of military installations in the occupied territories. The statement emphasized reliance on divine power, the guidance of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, and the unified support of the Iranian people.

Tel Aviv Burns, Haifa Shudders: Iran's Missiles Pierce Israel's Defences, Leave Trail of Rubble
Our Web Desk Published 16.06.25

-----------
Central Israel woke up to plumes of smoke and the sound of sirens on Monday, as Iranian missiles tore through Tel Aviv and Haifa in the early hours, toppling residential buildings, gutting markets and igniting fires across key urban centres.
The blasts, part of Tehran’s escalating counter-assault following Israeli attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites, have pushed the death toll in Israel to 18 since Friday.
In Tel Aviv, missiles destroyed residential blocks in densely populated areas, blew out the windows of nearby hotels and buildings including ones just metres from the U.S. Embassy branch—and left concrete structures caved in and glass strewn across roads.
The Embassy reported minor damage, with no injuries.
The popular Shuk HaCarmel market, usually crowded with morning shoppers, was struck, along with a residential street in Petah Tikva and a school in the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak.
Israel's emergency services confirmed five deaths in the Monday morning barrage and over 100 wounded, with injuries ranging from cuts and burns to critical trauma.
Rescuers continued operations across Tel Aviv and Haifa, with dozens of first responders evacuating injured residents and searching for those trapped under debris.
In Haifa, missiles struck near the port, setting a power plant ablaze and injuring around 30 people.
Fires lit up the skyline, adding to growing concerns at the ongoing G7 summit over the conflict spiralling into a wider regional war.
‘New method’
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said a “new method” was used in this round of attacks that confused Israel’s defence systems into targeting each other, allowing multiple missiles to bypass the Iron Dome and strike deep into urban centres.
The central city of Petah Tikva reported significant damage to a residential building as walls charred, windows blown out, and homes heavily damaged.
The Magen David Adom emergency service confirmed the deaths of two women and one man, all in their 70s, and said 74 others had been taken to hospitals.
Rescue crews worked through smoke and rubble, evacuating the injured — some bloodied, others barely conscious, as the missile strike left a gaping scar in the middle of one of Israel’s most densely packed cities.
Iran’s strikes came in response to Israeli attacks on Friday that killed several Iranian military leaders, nuclear scientists, and the Revolutionary Guard’s intelligence chief.
Since then, Israel has expanded its target list to hit oil refineries and government facilities across Iran.
The ongoing exchange has already claimed at least 224 lives in Iran, according to official figures, with over 1,200 wounded. Rights groups estimate the real toll may be significantly higher.
As of Monday morning, both Tel Aviv and Haifa remain on high alert, with more missile sirens reported in other parts of central Israel.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a statement: "The arrogant dictator of Tehran has become a cowardly murderer who targets the civilian home front in Israel to deter the IDF from continuing the attack that is collapsing his capabilities."
"Theresidents of Tehran will pay the price, and soon."
With each new strike, the boundaries between military target and civilian infrastructure blur further, dragging millions deeper into a crisis with no clear end.

Anti-LGBT protest in Moldova meets heavy police response
15 Jun, 2025
Clashes involving riot police turning on protesters with young children blighted the Moldovan capital city of Chisinau on Sunday, where an unauthorized Gay Pride march was forced through the city, despite angry protests from locals.
----------
Moldovan capital city of Chisinau on Sunday endured a Pride march, as well as several separate anti-LGBT protests. The events ultimately yielded a major scandal after one of the counter-protests was met with heavy policing, while the Pride march itself went unhindered despite lacking proper authorization.
Pride march controversy
This year, the annual event that concludes Moldova Pride month was not authorized by local authorities. Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban firmly opposed the march and explicitly banned it in mid-May. Despite the pressure from the country’s central authorities, the mayor refused to change his stance on the matter.
A day before the march, however, local police effectively approved it. Law enforcement said it has come up with a plan to ensure the paths of the LGBTQ marchers and two main counterprotests, staged by the country’s largest opposition force, the Socialist party, and by the Future of Moldova party, never intersect.
Unauthorized Pride march unhindered
The LGBTQ marchers were initially allowed by police to march only on sidewalks, given that the city’s authorities never authorized the event and diverted traffic from the route. The organizers, however, insisted the procession should walk along the road and urged the activists to step in and block the traffic.
While police present at the scene initially attempted to talk the LGBTQ marchers out of blocking traffic, they promptly gave up and allowed the activists to walk down the road. The law enforcement took no action against the activists, escorting them instead along the way.
Counterprotest met with heavy police response
One of the counter-protests, a large group of Christian Orthodox faithful, led by multiple priests, attempted to approach the Pride march but was stopped by a riot police cordon. The standoff turned into scuffles between the activists, who carried icons and crosses, and law enforcement, with chaotic videos from the scene promptly going viral.
Police officers were seen violently pushing a man with a child in his arms. During the scuffle, the child hit his head on the ground, video suggests. The man apparently ended up detained and put into a minibus alongside the child.
During the scuffle, police officers threw a priest onto the ground, another video shows. The cleric reportedly ended up in police custody as well.
The violence eventually waned, with only one Orthodox activist managing to get through the cordon to confront the Pride marchers and seemingly threatening them with a pants belt. The activist was promptly led away by police.
Opposition condemns police violence
The violence has been condemned by different opposition forces, who demanded an investigation into heavy-handed police action. Former Moldovan PM and the leader of the Future of Moldova party, Vasile Tarlev, accused the country’s authorities of enabling police violence and called for a probe into the incident.
“I consider the actions of the police, who guarded the LGBT march on the orders of the authorities, outrageous,” Tarlev told TASS.
“They have beaten up and detained believers who came out for a peaceful protest. They threw them on the asphalt, including a priest, dropped and scared a child, and twisted his father’s arms.”
The founder of the Sor Party and the leader of the Victory opposition bloc, exiled Israeli-Moldovan businessman Ilan Shor, has condemned the violence, stating it was a part of anti-Orthodox policies pursued by Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
“Sandu is waging an open war on the Moldovan Orthodox Church and families with children. The whole world is now witnessing that,” Shor wrote on social media.

Trump ‘open’ to Putin as Iran-Israel mediator

-----------
US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he is open to Russian President Vladimir Putin serving as a mediator in the Israel-Iran conflict. In an hour-long phone call the previous day, the two leaders focused on the Middle East crisis.
“Yeah, I would be open to it. He is ready. He called me about it,” Trump responded to ABC News’ Rachel Scott, when asked about Putin’s potential role in brokering peace.
“We had a long talk about it. We talked about this more than his situation. This is something I believe is going to get resolved,” Trump added.
After the phone call the Kremlin later said that Putin had condemned Israel’s strikes on Iran and expressed concern over further escalation, while reiterating Russia’s willingness to facilitate negotiations.
Putin recalled that Moscow had previously proposed concrete measures to facilitate “mutually acceptable agreements” in US-Iran nuclear negotiations before the current escalation, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov revealed.
“Russia’s principled position and commitment to resolving this issue remain unchanged,” Ushakov stated. “As President Putin emphasized, we will continue to act accordingly.”
Despite the cancellation of Oman-mediated nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington following Israel’s strikes, Trump maintained that discussions continued. “They’d like to make a deal. They’re talking,” he said, suggesting the escalation might actually accelerate diplomacy.
When asked about possible American engagement in the conflict, Trump stated: “We’re not involved in it. It’s possible we could get involved. But we are not at this moment involved.”
The conflict in the Middle East escalated on June 12 when Israel struck Iranian nuclear sites, killing senior military officials and prompting retaliatory missile barrages from Tehran. Both sides have exchanged fire for a third straight day.

‘My Sisters and Daughter Have Married Hindus’: Aamir Khan Says Film PK Wasn’t Against Religion, Promoted Love Jihad
June 15, 2025
Aamir Khan finally addressed allegations against him that have been floating on social media ever since the release of his 2014 blockbuster, Rajkumar Hirani’s satire PK. He defended the film against claims that it targets religion. Along with that, he also responded to the allegations that PK endorses love jihad.
“They’re wrong. We’re not against any religion. We respect all religions and all religious people. That film just tells us to be cautious of those who exploit religion to fool the common man in order to extract money from them. You’ll find people like that in every religion. That was the film’s only purpose,” said Aamir.
In the interview with India TV, Aamir also clarified his take on the scene in which he shows an Indian Hindu woman (Anushka Sharma) trying to marry a Pakistani Muslim man (late Sushant Singh Rajput). He said that when people from two religions, particularly Hindu and Muslim, fall in love and get married, that’s not always love jihad. “This is just humanity. It’s above religion,” argued Aamir. He asked if his sisters and daughter marrying Hindu men is love jihad.
Aamir’s sister and actor Nikhat is married to Santosh Hegde whereas his other sister Farhat’s husband is Rajeev Dutta. Meanwhile, Aamir’s daughter Ira Khan tied the knot with Nupur Shikhare last year. Aamir himself has married two Hindu women — Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao — in 1988 and 2005 respectively.
When asked while he married Indian women, the names of his kids are Ira Khan, Junaid Khan and Azad Rao Khan, Aamir answered, “My kids have been named by my wives. There wasn’t any interference from my end. Husbands ki zyada chalti nahi hai (Husbands don’t have too much of a say)”. He revealed his first wife Reena named their kids Junaid and Ira. “Let me tell you, Ira is another name for (goddess) Saraswati. Have you heard of Irawati? It’s just that Reena wanted to pronounce it differently,” explained Aamir, claiming Ira’s name was taken from former BJP minister Maneka Gandhi’s book The Penguin Book of Hindu Names.
Aamir also explained that his second wife and filmmaker Kiran Rao named their son Azad after his legendary ancestor, Maulana Azad, who was a freedom fighter and the first Education Minister of Independent India. “Azad isn’t a Muslim name. Haven’t you heard of Chandrashekhar Azad? He was also a freedom fighter. It’s a neutral name,” said Aamir.
Aamir added that since he gets trolled from both sides of the fence, that only proves he’s doing the right thing. “I’m very proud I’m a Muslim. I’m also proud I’m a Hindustani. Both of these statements are true,” Aamir said. He pointed out that no other Indian actor has been as socially conscious as him.
Also Read — Aamir Khan recalls creditors yelling at him when father went ‘almost bankrupt’: ‘They would say your father hasn’t paid us back, very difficult period’
Case in point: his TV show Satyamev Jayate and his NGO Paani Foundation. Aamir claimed he brought attention to issues in Satyamev Jayate which cut across all religions. “Have you seen the film Secret Superstar? What’s the religion of that family? So there’s nothing like that,” said Aamir. His 2017 blockbuster coming-of-age musical Secret Superstar, starring Zaira Wasim, revolved around the issues of domestic violence and curbed ambition in a Muslim family.

‘Dismissal Based On Religion by Shani Shingnapur Temple Trust Is Illegal,’ Says SP MLA Rais Shaikh
June 15, 2025
Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh Sunday termed the recent termination of 114 minority employees by the Shani Shingnapur Temple Trust in Maharashtra as an ‘illegal and arbitrary act’.
Speaking on the issue, Shaikh said, “Targeting Muslims and Dalits has always been part of the BJP government’s long-standing strategy. Their core agenda is to polarise votes along religious lines and seize power. This discrimination is being practiced in all walks of life, and the dismissal of 114 Muslim employees by the Shani Shingnapur Trust is a clear example of the BJP-RSS mindset in action.”
The 114 minority employees terminated by the Trust were employed in departments such as waste management, agriculture, and administration.
MLA Shaikh further pointed out that the NCP has the highest number of Muslim MLAs in the Maharashtra Assembly and currently holds the Minority Affairs department. “If the NCP continues to toe the BJP line, no Muslim voter will ever support them again,” warned Shaikh. He added that he plans to meet Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar soon and file a complaint against the NCP MLA who allegedly pressured the Trust to act.
The renowned Shani Shingnapur Temple Trust in the Ahmednagar district has claimed that the terminated employees had been absent from duty for several months. Notably, earlier objections had been raised by right-wing groups over minority workers being involved in the painting and maintenance of the temple premises. Tushar Bhosale of the Hindu Spiritual Front and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) MLA Sangram Jagtap had also threatened to launch an agitation against the Trust if the workers were not retrenched.

India begins relocation of citizens from Iran, mulls evacuation through Armenia
Jayanth Jacob
16 Jun 2025
Amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, India has begun relocating its nationals from high-risk zones in Iran and is actively considering evacuation options, with Armenia emerging as a possible route.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday confirmed that Indian nationals, including students, are being shifted to safer locations within Iran under the supervision of the Indian Embassy in Tehran.
"In some cases, students are being relocated with the Embassy's facilitation to safer places within Iran," the ministry said in a statement, adding that embassy officials are in constant contact with the Indian community and local leaders.
The government is also exploring evacuation routes, with discussions underway to potentially use Armenia for safe passage.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar spoke with his Armenian counterpart, Ararat Mirzoyan, to discuss logistical and diplomatic coordination, officials said.
The embassy in Tehran has urged Indian nationals and persons of Indian origin to remain indoors, avoid non-essential movement, and closely follow updates issued through official channels. A previous advisory warned citizens to “exercise due caution” and stay in contact with embassy staff.
Iran had temporarily closed its airspace over the weekend during intense exchanges of fire with Israel, complicating internal mobility and raising concerns about the safety of foreigners. As of 2022, around 10,000 Indian nationals were residing in Iran, including over 2,000 students, according to government data.
New Delhi has reiterated its call for restraint and de-escalation, urging both Iran and Israel to avoid further conflict.
“Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised,” foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
The current wave of hostilities began Friday when Israel launched strikes on Iran, prompting retaliatory attacks from Tehran. Iran’s health ministry has reported at least 224 deaths from Israeli strikes, while Israeli authorities have confirmed more than a dozen casualties in the latest round of violence.
India, which maintains relations with both Iran and Israel, has said it stands ready to “extend all possible support” to ensure peace and the safety of its citizens caught in the crossfire.

Worried J&K families seek safe evacuation of students studying in Iran
Fayaz Wani
15 Jun 2025
SRINAGAR: As hostilities between Iran and Israel escalate, distressed parents of students from Jammu and Kashmir studying in Iran have called for the immediate evacuation of their wards from the Middle Eastern country.
According to the J&K Students Association, an Israeli strike hit the Hujat Dost Ali Hostel in Tehran, which houses many Kashmiri students.
“Some students sustained minor injuries. We have spoken to several of them, and while the injuries are not serious, the situation remains deeply concerning. The situation has left these students traumatised and terrified,” the association said.
Suhail Mazamil Qadri, father of a student studying in Tehran, said their children are living in constant fear due to the escalation of hostilities between Iran and Israel.
“As Israel is targeting Iranian infrastructure with missiles and drones, we are extremely worried about the safety of our wards studying in Iran,” he said. “Our wards are very traumatised and are requesting us to get them safely evacuated from Iran.”
“We urge the J&K government, Ministry of External Affairs and Government of India to intervene and evacuate our wards safely from Iran,” Qadri said.
Hundreds of Kashmiri students are enrolled in various institutes across Iran.
A woman, whose son is studying at a university in Shiraz, Iran, said they are deeply concerned about the safety of their children.
“Whenever there is Israeli bombing on Iran, we become very apprehensive and fear-stricken. We are spending sleepless nights and anxious days. In a war, you don’t know what is going to happen,” she said.
The woman urged the safe evacuation of all J&K students studying in Iran and appealed to the Indian Embassy in Tehran to provide logistical support and ensure a safe passage back home for the students.
J&K MP Aga Ruhullah said that following the Israeli strike on the Hujat Dost Ali Hostel in Tehran, where many Kashmiri students are housed and some sustained minor injuries, he has written to External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, urging either their relocation within Iran or evacuation once the airspace reopens.
J&K Congress chief Tariq Hamid Karra also appealed to the External Affairs Minister to evacuate J&K students studying in Iran.
The administration has established a dedicated control room at the DC Office in Srinagar to assist families of students in Iran.
Parents and guardians have been asked to contact the control room and share details of their wards through the provided landline and WhatsApp numbers. The administration has urged families whose wards are studying in Iran to stay connected and make use of the helplines.
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said a decision to evacuate, if necessary, would be taken based on the ground situation, with the safety and security of the students as the primary consideration.
“We will keep everyone informed as the situation develops,” he said.
Omar added that he has spoken to the External Affairs Minister regarding the situation in Iran, particularly about the welfare and safety of Kashmiri students in the country.

In J&K, why Urdu is a new flashpoint amid BJP, Valley row over job exam
BASHAARAT MASOOD
Jun 16, 2025
A fresh row has erupted between the political parties of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) after the principal Opposition BJP called for scrapping the mandatory test of the “working knowledge of Urdu” in the upcoming Naib Tehsildar (revenue officials) recruitment examination in the Union Territory.
The Valley-based parties, including the ruling National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have strongly opposed the BJP’s demand, accusing it of allegedly making a bid to “erase J&K’s cultural legacy”.
On Thursday, senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the J&K Assembly, Sunil Sharma, met Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, to seek his intervention to drop the working knowledge of Urdu as an eligibility criterion for the post of Naib Tehsildars.
Sharma’s contention was that making working knowledge of one of the J&K’s five official languages mandatory for Naib Telsildar aspirants “violates the constitutional principles and administrative impartiality and creates an unfair barrier”. He also claimed this would put the candidates from Jammu at a “disadvantage”.
The NC and the PDP, however, immediately came out to counter the BJP’s stance and castigate the party.
“Urdu is not associated with any class, region, or religion, but is a historical and administrative language used in Jammu and Kashmir for over 130 years. During the reign of the Maharaja, all administrative work was conducted in Persian but later Urdu was adopted as a unifying language,” NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said.
“It is wrong to view every issue through a religious lens. The shajras (or the ancestral land records) have long been written in Urdu and it is not possible to change all those documents now. There is a need to acknowledge the Urdu’s historical role in administration including judiciary and revenue,” Sadiq said.
On June 9, the Jammu and Kashmir Service Selection Board (JKSSB), one of the two government recruitment agencies, issued a notification for a written exam for 75 posts of Naib Tehsildar in the UT’s Revenue Department. As always, the JKSSB specified that the second paper of the written exam for the posts will test the candidate’s “working knowledge of Urdu”.
Urdu has been the official administrative language of J&K since the pre-partition era. While Persian was the official language of J&K in the early Dogra period, Maharaja Pratap Singh made Urdu as the sole official language over a century ago.
It was during Maharaja Partap Singh’s time that the first land settlement of J&K was carried out by Sir Walter Lawrence, an Indian Civil Service (ICS) officer, who was also a member of the British Council of India. Lawrence, who was appointed as the first Settlement Commissioner, started the process in 1889, completing it in five years. Thus, the first official land settlement in J&K was recorded in the Urdu language.
Since the Lawrence period, all the revenue records of J&K were registered in Urdu. In fact, the pre-partition revenue records are kept at Srinagar’s Muhafiz Khana, which also has the original and official pre-partition land records of the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) too.
The working knowledge of Urdu has always been a prerequisite for recruitment in the J&K Revenue Department because all the land records in the UT are in this language.

FIR against state BJP chief for ‘hurling slipper’, Sikh leaders demand apology
by Tanusree Bose
June 16, 2025
An FIR has been registered against Union minister and state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar at Kalighat police station in Kolkata for allegedly throwing a slipper at a Sikh official.
The FIR, based on a complaint by local Sikh community members, has been lodged under BNS sections 208 (offence of non-attendance in obedience to an order from a public servant) 302 (offence of intentionally hurting religious feelings), 115(2) (deals with the offense of voluntarily causing hurt).
Accusing the Union minister of “deliberate and intentional act”, the members of the Sikh community demanded an apology from the BJP leader, saying they were “deeply hurt and disappointed by the incident”.
Majumdar, however, dismissed the charge, saying it was not a slipper, but only a “slipper-shaped paper” that was used to hit the police, and alleged that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was behind the protest by the Sikh community leaders.
The incident reportedly took place on June 12 when BJP leaders, led by Majumdar, were detained near the Chief Minister’s residence in the Kalighat area after they were stopped from visiting violence-hit Mahestala in South 24 Parganas. A purported video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
Addressing mediapersons on Sunday, Gurmeet Singh, the president Gurudwara Bara Sikh Sanghat, said: “All the members of the Sikh community are hurt… We had hoped that action would be taken (against him). Hoped that Sukanta Majumdar would come forward with an apology and clarification, but nothing happened.”
Referring to the purported remarks made by BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition in Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, last year against a Sikh officer, Singh added: “Now, we feel that Sukanta Majumdar had done it purposely… If he doesn’t apologise, we will carry out a huge protest against the BJP and Majumdar.”
The Sikh community leaders alleged that the BJP was selectively targeting their community, and cited the farm protest in Punjab.
Tejendra Singh, another Sikh leader, accused the BJP of “always trying to play the divide and rule politics”. “They (BJP) are trying to divide and rule. First, they were doing Hindu and Muslim; now, they are targeting Sikh community. In West Bengal, the minority communities live very happily. We are part of the development. If the BJP tries to do politics by divide and rule, we will clearly call for not voting for BJP,” the local Sikh leader added.
The Sikh leaders said the BJP leaders were showing disrespect towards the turban repeatedly. “… Sukanta Majumdar had gone inside the van, and then came out and threw the slipper. It means, it was intentional with some motive. If no action is taken it will go on. I am not talking about only Sikhs, it is for every person in Bengal. After the video went viral, we received several calls… The turban is our taj (crown). We will not tolerate any insult of turban,” the Sikh leaders said.
Claiming that the incident was an accident, Majumdar said the person on whose head the “paper-cut” fell was part of his security detail and that he intended to throw the paper at the police.
“Has the person on whose head the paper-cut of the slipper fell complained? This is being done on the signals of Mamata Banerjee. She does appeasement politics and tries to give rise to communal politics. I feel this has nothing to do with the ordinary Sikh community… Our intention was to throw paper at the police,” the senior BJP leader said.
Speaking to The Indian Express, BJP MP Shamik Bhattacharya said, “The BJP never wants to insult the Sikh community. We have been groomed in such a way that we talk of the sacrifices made by Guru Gobind Singh ji… It is important to know who is planting all this. After the assassination of (the then Prime Minister) Indira Gandhi, what happened to the Sikhs in Delhi, everyone knows the story. The BJP stood beside them in their difficult times.”
“Everyone knows that it is a political vendetta planted by whom,” the BJP MP said, without naming anyone.

Sunni scholars in southern provinces condemn Zionist aggression on Iran
15 Jun 2025
Sunni scholars and a number of social figures and civil society organizations in the southern governorates condemned the Zionist aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran because of its support for the Palestinian resistance with money, weapons, and political positions.
In a joint statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), the Sunni scholars, social figures, and organizations considered the Zionist enemy's targeting of a number of leaders, scholars, and civilians in Iran to be targeting the entire Islamic nation.
The statement called on the entire Islamic nation, both regimes and peoples, to abandon sectarian differences and fanaticism and stand united in confronting the enemy of the nation, which has killed tens of thousands of our brothers, women and children, in Gaza and continues to violate Muslim lands with all forms of aggression.
It congratulated the Islamic Republic for its precise, wide-ranging, and effective strikes against the heart of the criminal Zionist entity, affirming its full support for it.

Iran calls on islamic countries for joint action against zionist entity’s violations
15 Jun 2025
Iran today, Sunday, called on Islamic countries to take collective action in response to the increasing breaches of international law by the Zionist entity.
According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, during a phone call with the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hussein Ibrahim Taha, expressed appreciation for the latter’s sympathy and condemnation of the criminal aggression launched by the Zionist entity against Iran. He urged Islamic countries to unite in confronting the escalating violations of international law by the Zionist entity at the expense of regional nations.
IRNA reported that Amir-Abdollahian stated during the call, "The blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter, along with the clear threat to regional and international security and stability by the illegitimate Israeli entity—including its massacres against civilians and university professors, as well as its targeting of Iranian nuclear facilities—has once again demonstrated that this entity’s impunity only emboldens it to commit more crimes and aggressions."
Amir-Abdollahian emphasized Iran’s inherent right to self-defense against foreign aggression, affirming the determination of Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran to defend the nation until the aggression ceases.

Former Israeli PM Ehud Barak: Only full-scale war or new deal can stop Iran’s nuclear program
June 15, 2025
LONDON: Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has warned that military action by Israel alone will not be enough to significantly delay Iran’s nuclear ambitions, describing the Islamic republic as a “threshold nuclear power.”
Speaking to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Barak said that Israel’s ability to hold back Tehran’s program was limited.
“In my judgment, it’s not a secret that Israel alone cannot delay the nuclear program of Iran by a significant time period. Probably several weeks, probably a month, but even the US cannot delay them by more than a few months,” he said.
“It doesn’t mean that immediately they will have (a nuclear weapon), probably they still have to complete certain weaponization, or probably create a crude nuclear device to explode it somewhere in the desert to show the whole world where they are.”
Barak said that while military strikes were “problematic,” Israel viewed the action as justified.
“Instead of sitting idle, Israel feels that they have to do something. Probably together with the Americans we can do more.”
The former premier said that stopping Iran’s progress would require either a major diplomatic breakthrough or a regime change.
“My judgment is that because Iran is already what’s called a threshold nuclear power, the only way to block it is either to impose upon it a convincing new agreement or alternatively a full-scale war to topple down the regime,” he said.
“That’s something that together with the United States we can do.”
But he said he did not believe Washington had the appetite for such a move.
“I don’t believe that any American president, neither Trump or any one of his predecessors, would have decided to do that.”
Israel unleashed airstrikes across Iran for a third day on Sunday and threatened even greater force as some Iranian missiles fired in retaliation evaded Israeli air defenses to strike buildings in the heart of the country.
Israeli emergency services said at least 10 people had been killed in the Iranian attacks, while officials in Iran said that at least 128 people had been killed by Israel’s salvos.

Qatari foreign minister discusses Iran-Israel strikes in calls with UAE, UK counterparts
June 15, 2025
LONDON: Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, Qatar’s foreign minister, spoke with his Emirati and British counterparts in separate calls on Sunday to address the escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran.
Sheikh Mohammed and his UAE counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, discussed the Israeli attack on Iran, which began on Friday morning.
The Qatari foreign minister reiterated Doha’s condemnation of the Israeli attack, which violates Iran’s sovereignty and security and is a clear violation of the principles of international law, the Qatar News Agency reported.
Sheikh Mohammed had a separate conversation on Sunday with UK Minister of Foreign Affairs David Lammy. During this call, he said that the ongoing Israeli violations and attacks in the region are undermining peace efforts and could lead to a broader regional conflict, the QNA added.
He emphasized the need for diplomatic efforts, saying that Qatar is collaborating with partners to promote dialogue and enhance security and peace in the region and worldwide.

Turkish president discusses Israel-Iran strikes with Oman’s sultan, Kuwait’s emir
June 15, 2025
LONDON: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed developments in the Middle East during separate phone calls on Sunday with the Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq, and the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
Erdogan discussed with the Omani sultan the Israeli strikes against Iran, which began on Friday morning, and their “worrying repercussions” for the region, the Oman News Agency reported.
The parties stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy and a return to the negotiating table to settle conflicts and prevent the escalation of crises in the region.
The ONA reported that they exchanged views on maintaining security and stability in accordance with international law.
Erdogan and the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Meshal also discussed the rapid developments in the Middle East and the conflict between “the friendly Islamic Republic of Iran and the brutal Israeli entity,” the Kuwait News Agency reported.
In addition, both leaders renewed their condemnation of the ongoing Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, where at least 54,000 Palestinians have been killed since late 2023. They emphasized the importance of de-escalating tensions, halting aggression, and resolving differences through diplomatic means in the region, the KUNA added.

MP calls out lack of bomb shelters in Arab-Israeli communities
June 15, 2025
JERUSALEM: Ayman Odeh, an Israeli member of parliament of Palestinian descent, accused the government on Sunday of failing to provide Arab-Israeli communities with enough shelters after an Iranian missile killed four people in the city of Tamra.
“The state, unfortunately, still distinguishes between blood and blood,” Odeh lamented on X, after touring the city of 37,000 predominantly Arab residents.
A house there was destroyed by a missile launched by Iran overnight in response to Israel’s unprecedented attacks on the Islamic republic’s military and nuclear sites.
“Four civilians were killed yesterday: Manar Al-Qassem Abu Al-Hija Khatib (39), her two daughters Hala (13) and Shada (20), and their relative Manar Diab Khatib (41),” Odeh said, adding that “dozens more” were wounded
Cars and buildings were also damaged by the strike on the community in the Israeli region of Galilee, an AFP journalist at the scene reported.
“Tamra is not a village. It is a city without public shelters,” Odeh said, adding that this was the case for 60 percent of “local authorities” — the Israeli term for communities not officially registered as cities, many of which are Arab-Israeli.
Arab-Israelis are Palestinians who remained in what is now Israel after its creation in 1948, and represent about 20 percent of the country’s population.
The community frequently professes to face discrimination from Israel’s Jewish majority.
With Israel and Iran engaged in their most intense confrontation ever, Odeh, a communist MP for over 10 years, warned of “a threat of unprecedented destruction (that) will not distinguish” between Arabs and Jews.
He also accused the government of “neglect” toward citizens of Palestinian descent.
A video shared on social media Sunday night caused outrage after showing families apparently rejoicing in Hebrew as missiles fell on Tamra.
In some Arab neighborhoods, missiles launched toward Israel have also been welcomed with joy, AFP journalists reported.

'Shock' after fire at Bashir Ahmed Masjid in Southampton
June 16, 2025
By Cristiano Magaglio
A flat was destroyed after a fire broke out at a mosque in Southampton.
The blaze started on the third floor of the Bashir Ahmed Masjid in Portswood at around 11.19am on Sunday, June 15.
Firefighters from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed one flat was destroyed and three remaining flats on the third floor suffered smoke damage.
At the time of writing, the cause of the fire was to be determined, but the gas and electric supply to the building was isolated.
A long row of emergency vehicles lined Portswood Road, a large section of which was closed while firefighters tackled the blaze.
Around 35 firefighters from St Mary’s, Hightown, Eastleigh, Redbridge, Fareham, Winchester, and Lyndhurst attended.
Portswood resident, Mike Jones said: "I've seen pictures and it was billowing from the top, big black smoke.
"I can still see smoke coming out of the window.
"It is just a shame really.
"I was shocked to see it, it's the last place you would expect to see it."
Sophie Martin from Portswood saw the fire engine dash past her house before witnessing the scene herself.
She said: "We just saw it as we were walking down the street.
"There are a lot of vehicles."
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said residents were already evacuated when firefighters arrived.
The fire was tackled using hose reel jets, and ventilation fans were used to clear the smoke.
Nazesh Sediqi lives across the mosque and was unable to get back into her home due to the cordon.
She said: "I didn't see how it started, I just got a message saying look outside, the mosque is burning."
The mosque, which opened in December 2013, can accommodate 800 worshippers at any one time and provides educational classes for both adults and children, as well as a range of religious and secular activities and services.
Fire Investigation Officers were in attendance to find out the cause of the fire.

Azerbaijani official: Over 20 historical monuments restored in Shusha, including five mosques
15 June 2025
More than 20 historical monuments, including five mosques, have been restored in the city of Shusha, according to Aydin Karimov, the Special Representative of Azerbaijan's President in the Shusha district.
At the international conference titled “The New World Order: Geopolitical Aspects and Global Challenges,” the official highlighted Shusha’s growing tourism sector, noting the recent opening of new hotels, museums, and recreational facilities. He added that the city attracted over 25,000 visitors in the first ten days of this month alone, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
He noted that a newly built school in Shusha is now serving around 200 students. A modern treatment and wellness centre has also been opened. One of the most significant projects is the construction of new residential buildings for the residents of Shusha.
The first residential complex, consisting of 23 newly built buildings and now home to 1,409 Shusha residents—former internally displaced persons—has already been inhabited, the president's representative said.
Construction of three more residential complexes, comprising 45 apartment buildings, will begin in the coming months, Karimov added.
At the same conference, Tahir Budagov, Deputy Chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party, emphasised that Azerbaijan, as a proponent of a new geopolitical order, is resolutely combating factors that pose serious threats to international security.
By pursuing an independent and constructive policy, Azerbaijan promotes dialogue and cooperation on a global scale, Budagov said.
The MP noted that Azerbaijan, having achieved victory in the 44-day Patriotic War in 2020 and fully restored its territorial integrity during the one-day anti-terrorism measures in 2023, is actively shaping a just geopolitical order in the region. This includes building a new environment of security, cooperation, and trust in the name of peace.
Budagov stated that the country's strategic course is based on principles such as adherence to international law, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, non-interference in internal affairs, and consideration of national interests on a reciprocal basis. By independently implementing UN Security Council resolutions that had long remained unfulfilled and resolving a protracted conflict, Azerbaijan has created a unique international political and legal precedent—clearly establishing its stance as a defender of peace, justice, and equality across the globe.

Former French President Sarkozy Stripped Of Legion Of Honour MedalAfter Being Convicted Last Year Of Corruption
June 16, 2025
France's former President Nicolas Sarkozy has been stripped of his Legion of Honor medal after being convicted last year of corruption and influence peddling while he was the country’s head of state, it was announced on Sunday.
The decision was made via a decree released in the Journal Officiel that publishes the government's major legal information. It comes in line with the rules of the Legion of Honor. The conservative politician, who was president from 2007 to 2012, has been at the heart of a series of legal cases since leaving office.
He was found guilty of corruption and influence peddling by both a Paris court in 2021 and an appeals court in 2023 for trying to bribe a magistrate in exchange for information about a legal case in which he was implicated. He was sentenced to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet for one year, a verdict upheld by France’s highest court, the Court of Cassation, in December.
Earlier this year, Sarkozy stood trial over allegations he received millions of dollars from Libya for his successful presidential campaign in 2007. He denies the claims. Prosecutors requested a seven-year prison sentence.
The verdict is expected in September.
Sarkozy becomes the second former head of state to be stripped of the Legion of Honor — France’s highest distinction — after Nazi collaborator Philippe Petain, who was convicted in 1945 for treason and conspiring with the enemy for his actions as leader of Vichy France from 1940-1944.
Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was stripped of his Legion of Honor award in the wake of widespread sexual misconduct allegations against him in 2017.
Disgraced cyclist and former Tour de France star Lance Armstrong also had his French Legion of Honor award revoked.
Sarkozy retired from public life in 2017 though still plays an influential role in French conservative politics.

Moldova is becoming a pro-EU police state – opposition MP
15 Jun, 2025
A senior Moldovan opposition lawmaker has expressed shock over violent clashes between police and Orthodox Christian protestors at an anti-LGBTQ rally in Chisinau on Sunday. Videos circulating online appear to show law enforcement using force against demonstrators, including an Orthodox priest being knocked to the ground and a man with a child being forcibly detained.
“We strongly condemn what has happened today in Chisinau,” Marina Tauber, a prominent critic of the country’s pro-European government, told RT. “We are demanding an investigation and punishment for the policemen who acted as we have seen today.”
The clashes erupted after an unsanctioned LGBTQ march, attended by activists waving rainbow flags, was met by counter-protesters, primarily Orthodox Christians carrying religious icons and crosses. Police were deployed in large numbers, and initially allowed the LGBTQ march to proceed, but later intervened when tensions escalated between the two groups.
Tauber, the executive secretary of the opposition coalition ‘Pobeda – Victorie’, described the scenes as “disturbing” and “something unbelievable,” stating she had to check the video multiple times before accepting the reality of the events. She accused the police of serving political interests rather than protecting citizens.
“We are becoming a police state where law enforcement serves the pro-European government, not our people.”
While the Maia Sandu administration is pushing for closer EU ties, conservative and Orthodox groups have sought to resist what they see as liberal social policies. Previous LGBTQ events in Moldova have faced opposition, with counter-protesters, including clergy, attempting to disrupt marches.
Moldova, a former Soviet republic, has sped up moves toward EU and NATO membership since 2020, when Sandu – an outspoken critic of Russia – came to power. Her pro-Western policies have faced growing criticism domestically, particularly over the country’s economic trajectory and handling of dissent.
Sandu has defended her actions as part of a broader effort to counter alleged pro-Russian influence, launching crackdowns on opposition parties and media outlets that she describes as criminal entities.
Ilan Shor, leader of the Victorie political bloc, accused President Sandu’s government of waging an “open war” against priests and supporters of traditional values.

Five million join anti-Trump rallies across US – organizers
15 Jun, 2025
More than five million people took part in anti-Trump marches across the US on Saturday, organizers have claimed. The ‘No Kings’ rallies took aim at the president’s tough anti-immigration policies, as well as layoffs of government employees.
The protests, touted as the “largest single-day mobilization” against the Republican president, came against a backdrop of days-long riots in Los Angeles that erupted following a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid on illegal migrants. The protesters there have been torching police cars and US flags, blocking highways, and clashing with law enforcement officers, who have responded with tear gas and rubber bullets and hundreds of arrests. Multiple injuries on both sides have been reported.
On the event’s website, the ‘No Kings’ organizers called for a “nationwide day of defiance rejecting authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics, and the militarization of our democracy” on Saturday. They claimed events were held in more than 1,500 cities across all 50 states, including New York, Denver, Chicago, Austin, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.
“They’ve defied our courts, deported Americans, disappeared people off the streets, attacked our civil rights, and slashed our services,” the statement read, apparently referring to the Trump administration.
No major events were staged in the US capital, Washington, where a military parade was taking place to mark the 250th anniversary of the US Army. President Trump, who presided over the procession, also celebrated his 79th birthday on Saturday.
“Instead of allowing this birthday parade to be the center of gravity, we will make action everywhere else the story of America that day,” the organizers declared, as quoted by the media.
While most rallies proceeded without incident, clashes between demonstrators and police were reported in Los Angeles. In Portland, Oregon, law enforcement officers also deployed tear gas and rubber bullets as a splinter group of protesters converged on the local ICE building, with at least two arrests reportedly made.
In Salt Lake City, Utah, police detained three people after shots were fired during a rally, leaving one person seriously injured. Police Chief Brian Redd said the motive was not immediately clear.
In Culpeper, Virginia, the police apprehended a man who drove his SUV into a crowd, hitting at least one of the participants.

Minnesota assassination survivor and husband shot 17 times
16 Jun, 2025
Mike Wendling
A survivor of Saturday's deadly attacks on two Minnesota lawmakers says she and her husband are both "incredibly lucky to be alive" after they were hit by 17 bullets.
State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were gunned down at their home early on Saturday morning, but lived. Melissa Hortman - the top Democratic legislator in the state House - and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed.
Yvette Hoffman said in a statement that she and her husband John were "devastated" by the Hortmans' deaths.
Police are hunting for the suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, who wore a latex mask and posed as an officer to shoot the victims at their homes in suburban Minneapolis, before escaping on foot.
Mrs Hoffman's statement was shared on Instagram by Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar.
"John is enduring many surgeries right now and is closer every hour to being out of the woods," Mrs Hoffman wrote.
"He took 9 bullet hits. I took 8 and we are both incredibly lucky to be alive.
"We are gutted and devastated by the loss of Melissa and Mark. We have no words. There is never a place for this kind of political hate."
Police have not disclosed the killer's motive.
A Facebook post from someone identifying as Mrs Hoffman's nephew said she had thrown herself on her daughter during the assassination attempt, "using her body as a shield to save her life".
According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, the daughter, Hope, is in her 20s and was born with spina bifida, which her father previously cited as motivating him to get into state politics.
On Sunday, police said they had found an unoccupied car linked to the suspect in Sibley County, about 50 miles (80km) from the murder scene.
The discovery of the black sedan was alerted to local residents' mobile phones in a message that said: "Suspect not located. Keep your doors locked and vehicles secured."
A cowboy hat, similar to what Boelter, 57, was believed to have been wearing, was found nearby.
Police also said on Sunday that Boelter's wife had been detained in a traffic stop along with three relatives in a car in the city of Onamia, more than 100 miles from the family home in the rural community of Green Isle, on Saturday morning.
Jenny Boelter was released without being taken into custody because she was co-operative, Drew Evans, of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, told a news conference on Sunday evening.
Police have extended the search over state lines to South Dakota and the FBI has added Boelter to its most-wanted list, issuing a $50,000 reward.
Both of the targeted lawmakers belonged to Minnesota's Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party, which is affiliated with the national Democratic Party.
Authorities said they recovered a target list that included the names of Minnesota Democratic politicians from another vehicle used by the suspect.
Governor Tim Walz, congresswoman Ilhan Omar, Klobuchar and another US Senator, Tina Smith, were on the list – along with state Attorney General Keith Ellison, people familiar with the investigation told local media.
"Clearly, this is politically motivated," Klobuchar told NBC News' Meet the Press on Sunday morning.
President Donald Trump, a Republican, told ABC News on Sunday the attack was "a terrible thing".
Investigators say Boelter was disguised as a police officer when he carried out the attacks and had a vehicle that looked like a police car, equipped with flashing emergency lights.
The gunman first targeted the Hoffmans at their home in Champlin at around 02:00 local time on Saturday, authorities said.
Soon afterwards, Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed at their home in Brooklyn Park, eight miles away.
Officers arrived at the Hortmans' home and exchanged gunfire with the suspect at around 03:35. The suspect managed to flee, leaving behind his car, authorities said.
According to Boelter's CV, he has a background in security and military training and had also been a pastor.
The city of Brooklyn Park was silent on Sunday morning as the neighbourhood came to terms with a suspected political assassination on its doorstep.
A police car was parked outside the Hortmans' house and bright yellow caution tape surrounded the property.
Taha Abuisnaineh, who lives across the street, said he and his wife had known the family for more than 20 years.
"They were very nice neighbours in a very quiet neighbourhood," he told the BBC. "You don't see police activity in this neighbourhood. We are very shocked."
Two other nearby residents who did not want to be named said the suburban community was reeling.
"My next-door neighbour heard the shots," said one. "We've all been texting back and forth."
She and her husband described how they received an annual Christmas card from the Hortmans.
"What a big loss for Minnesota," she said.
In Sibley County, where the suspect's car was found, local resident Brian Liebhard also told the BBC of his shock.
"This guy needs to get caught," he said. "I don't agree with everything they [the two politicians] vote for, but this is sad - the guy went wacko."

What we know about the attack on two Minnesota lawmakers
16 Jun, 2025
Kayla Epstein
On Saturday, two state lawmakers from Minnesota were gunned down in their homes in what Governor Tim Walz called a "politically motivated assassination" attempt. The attacks left one politician dead and the other seriously injured.
The suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, has been taken into custody after he was found hiding in the woods near the village of Green Isle in Sibley County, police said on Sunday night.
Police called the two-day search for Boelter the "largest manhunt in the state's history", with multiple law enforcement agencies working together to find him.
The attacks drew condemnation from across the political spectrum. President Donald Trump said in a statement that "such horrific violence will not be tolerated".
US Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, called it "an attack on everything we stand for as a democracy".
Who were the victims?
State representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed in their home, the governor said.
She had served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for 20 years, and was speaker of the chamber from 2019-25.
State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot multiple times and injured, but survived. They had surgery.
Both lawmakers are Democrats.
What happened?
Law enforcement has confirmed the attacks occurred in the early hours of Saturday in the cities of Brooklyn Park and Champlin, Minnesota.
Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, said police received a call at 02:00 local time about an incident at Hoffman's house in Champlin.
Another call to police came in at 03:35, when officers were checking on Hortman's home, nearby in Brooklyn Park.
Police discovered what looked like an emergency vehicle parked at the home with emergency lights flashing.
Coming out of the home was someone resembling a police officer, who immediately opened fire on officers, darted back into the house, then escaped on foot.
Mark Bruley, chief of Brooklyn Park police, said the suspect was "wearing a vest with a Taser, other equipment, a badge" posing as law enforcement in order "to manipulate their way into the home".
Who is Vance Luther Boelter?
Police identified the suspect as 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter. They did not give details on a possible motive.
A former political appointee, Boelter was once a member of the same state workforce development board as Hoffman.
"We don't know the nature of the relationship or if they actually knew each other," said Evans.
Investigators reportedly found a list of 70 "targets", including the names of state Democratic politicians, in a vehicle the suspect drove for the assassination.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, congresswoman Ilhan Omar, Minnesota's two US senators, Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, and state Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison were on the hit list, according to local media.
Locations for Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions and contraception, were also on the list, a person familiar with the investigation told the Minnesota Star Tribune.
Evans told reporters he would not describe the notebook found in the car as a "manifesto" as it was not "a treatise on all kinds of ideology and writings".
Boelter is a security contractor and religious missionary who has worked in Africa and the Middle East, according to an online CV.
Boelter once preached as a pastor at a church in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to Facebook photos. He had travelled often to the nation, indicate posts from his LinkedIn account.
An online video from two years ago seemed to show him addressing a congregation, adding that he has a wife and five children.
He had also worked back in Minnesota for a major food distributor, a convenience store chain and for two funeral services businesses, according to his online profile.
According to local TV affiliate KTTC, Boelter's only criminal history in Minnesota was for traffic tickets, including speeding and parking violations.
He texted a troubling message to friends at a Minneapolis residence, where he had rented a room and would stay one or two nights a week, the Minnesota Star Tribune reports.
Boelter said: "I'm going to be gone for a while. May be dead shortly, so I just want to let you know I love you guys both and I wish it hadn't gone this way."
How did police find Boelter?
On Sunday night, police said they found Boelter after receiving information that he was seen in the area of Green Isle, a village not far from his home.
He was arrested in a rural area with mostly farmland, fields and small woods, and taken into custody "without any use of force" or injury to police.
Police said Boelter was armed when he was arrested, but did not provide further information on the type of weapons present.
Evans said Boelter's arrest brought "a sense of relief" to communities and lawmakers who were on the suspect's list of targets.
He also said law enforcement believed the suspect acted alone and was not part of a broader network.
Authorities also condemned Boelter's impersonation of a police officer while carrying out the attacks, saying "he exploited the trust our uniforms are meant to represent".
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also followed with a plea for civility, urging people to "shake hands" and "find common ground".
"One man's unthinkable actions have altered the state of Minnesota," he said.
"This cannot be the norm. It cannot be the way that we deal with our political differences."
Prior to Boelter's arrest, his wife was detained in a traffic stop along with three relatives in a car in the city of Onamia, more than 100 miles from the family home, on Saturday morning, but released after questioning.

Trump orders ‘largest mass deportation in history’
16 Jun, 2025
US President Donald Trump has instructed federal agents to dramatically ramp up deportations of illegal migrants from Democrat-led cities after riots swept Los Angeles.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday evening, Trump instructed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to “achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.”
“In order to achieve this, we must expand efforts to detain and deport Illegal Aliens in America’s largest Cities, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, where Millions upon Millions of Illegal Aliens reside,” he added.
Trump went on to claim that the Democrats are using illegal migrants to “expand their Voter Base, cheat in Elections, and grow the Welfare State, robbing good paying Jobs and Benefits from Hardworking American Citizens.”
Many Democratic strongholds, including Los Angeles and Chicago, are restricting their cooperation with federal immigration agents under their sanctuary laws – policies Trump and the Republicans have long opposed.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have condemned Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard and active-duty Marines to help quell the unrest sparked last week by ICE raids. Newsom argued that the move was unlawful and sued Trump and the Pentagon.
“Donald Trump is creating fear and terror by failing to adhere to the US Constitution and overstepping his authority,” the governor said.
A curfew has been imposed on parts of downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday following days of looting, vandalism, and clashes with police.
During his election campaign, Trump vowed to undo what he described as “open border” policies under his predecessor, Joe Biden, who oversaw the influx of migrants across the border with Mexico.

Governor of Osun State Threatens Sanctions Against Radio Stations Promoting Violence
June 16, 2025
By Justina Otio
The Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has warned leaders of opposition and radio stations against inciting the public to violence over last Friday’s Court of Appeal judgment in Akure, which refused to relist a case by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement signed by his spokesman, Olawale Rasheed, the governor condemned the activities of some radio stations. He said they allowed guests to incite the public to violence and also manifested disdain for a fair hearing of stakeholders.
He urged the stations to caution guests, who reportedly made libellous allegations bordering on sedition against public officials.
He further alleged that the stations also blocked the right to a fair hearing for affected people.
He subsequently directed the Commissioner for Information to summon the General Managers of all affected stations for a briefing before further action would be taken.”
“While drumming support for freedom of the press. Observance of broadcasting codes is key to responsible broadcast journalism, vowing to impose sanctions on any station that refuses to obey broadcast rules and codes,” the governor said.
He also warned opposition politicians against the current trends of promoting violence in the wake of the recent pronouncement of the Court of Appeal.
Adeleke restated his administration’s commitment to the rule of law, saying those threatening violence to achieve political goals are enemies of the people.
“We task our people to be law abiding. The local government question is being resolved without any further bloodletting. Those promoting violence will face the law at the right time,” the Governor said.

Benue Governor Reveals Where Suspected Herdsmen Came From, Says Only 59 People Killed
June 16, 2025
By George Oshogwe Ogbolu
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has confirmed the killing of 59 people in Yelewata, a border community between Benue and Nasarawa states, following an attack by suspected herdsmen.
Speaking to journalists at the Government House on Sunday, Alia said the death toll was determined through a headcount conducted by security operatives in collaboration with families of the victims.
Among the dead were military and civil defence personnel who lost their lives defending the community from the attackers.
The Benue State governor disclosed that the suspected herdsmen came into the state from Nasarawa State.
Governor Alia acknowledged the assistance of his Nasarawa State counterpart, Abdullahi Sule, who he said shared intelligence regarding the invasion.
He also confirmed that one woman was killed on the Nasarawa side during the attack.
The governor disclosed the casualty figures while receiving a report from the panel of inquiry on militia activities in the Sankera axis, adding that the government would forward the report to relevant authorities and investigate individuals mentioned to help restore peace in the region.
Pope Leo XIV Condemns Killings, Prays for Benue
Reacting to the killings, Pope Leo XIV condemned the incident as a “terrible massacre”, stating that most of the victims were displaced civilians murdered with “extreme cruelty.”
Delivering his remarks before the Sunday Angelus prayer at the Vatican, the Pope expressed deep concern over the unending violence in Nigeria and offered special prayers for “security, justice, and peace” to return.
“We pray especially for the rural Christian communities of Benue, who have been relentless victims of violence,” the pontiff said.
Protests Erupt in Makurdi
Meanwhile, angry youths took to the streets of Makurdi on Sunday to protest the massacre.
The demonstrators, who converged on the Wurukum food basket roundabout as early as 8 a.m., demanded immediate action from the government.
They were later joined by controversial social media influencer Martin Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, who has been vocal about security issues across Nigeria.

‘It Is A Level Of Imbecility, Sign Of Insecurity’ – Sowore Kicks Over Naming Projects After Tinubu
June 16, 2025
By Rachel Okporu Fadoju
African Action Congress (AAC) 2023 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised the trend of naming infrastructure projects after President Bola Tinubu.
Naija News reports that the Human Rights Activist in an interview on ARISE Television said the current trend is a symptom of political insecurity and ego rather than national honour.
He also called the practice a level of imbecility, arguing that many of those honoured in such a way have failed to uplift the lives of the people they claim to serve.
Sowore stated that if he were president, he would rather name infrastructure after trees or rivers, emphasising that they contribute to ecological balance and serve a public good without demanding praise.
The activist further said that the move was an insult to suffering Nigerians and a sign that the government is more concerned with legacy building than governance.
He said, “I want to address very quickly the issue of naming places after the President. I think that in itself is a sign of insecurity, that the people handling the regime, or the regime itself, is so unsure of itself, it had to be naming monuments after itself when there is nothing happening in the country. There is no reason why anybody who has done well for the country wouldn’t wait for monuments to be named after them after they have left.
“But you know, you and I know this, and you mentioned it, that there’s a level of imbecility involved. That’s true. And what that means is that even other monuments have been named after people in this country. It speaks to the fact that monuments are named after people who have contributed the least amount of progress to the country. And it’s just done in a way that I have no respect for the dignity of the people, respect for history, and respect for our existence.
“If I were to become president of this country, most of the places named after these former Nigerian leaders would be named after trees, and probably rivers in Nigeria. We have plenty of them. Because those ones deserve those places to be named after them. At least they are consistent, and they contribute to our ecological balance. There are people who contribute nothing. Sometimes I get depressed when I’m driving on roads in Abuja, and I see Buhari Road, or Babangida Road, or Abacha Barrack. I just wonder what’s wrong with us. But here you have it. That’s the map of imbecility.”

Benue Killings: Aisha Yesufu Calls For Tinubu’s Impeachment
June 15, 2025
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
Outspoken activist and co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign, Aisha Yesufu, has called on the Nigerian Senate to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu, citing his continued silence over the persistent killings in Benue State.
Yesufu, known for her fearless stance on national issues, expressed outrage over President Tinubu’s lack of public sympathy or visit to Benue following the latest massacre in Yelewata, where suspected armed herdsmen stormed the community around 10:00 pm on Friday, unleashing violence that claimed numerous lives and left several others injured.
Naija News reports that the Benue State Police Command later confirmed the incident, stating that tactical units engaged the attackers in a gun duel during the early hours of Saturday.
Despite the scale of the attack, President Tinubu has yet to issue a statement or visit the affected region.
Yesufu, however, pointed out that the President quickly condoled with India over a recent plane crash that killed over 200 people.
She wrote in a post on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter), “Tinubu condoled with India and not with Benue
“Tinubu is sitting down there gloating over the deaths of Nigerians whose mandate he truncated to occupy the office of the C-in-C.”
She questioned why national discourse had focused on party politics while the President remained unaccountable for the worsening insecurity in Nigeria.
Yesufu added, “Instead of Tinubu’s impeachment to be the topic of discussion, who is supposed to own a political party is the main topic!”
The statement is a veiled criticism of ongoing political drama and defections, especially within the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party in Benue State.

FG Remains Silent On Yelewata Massacre, Speaks Loudly On Iran-Israel Conflict
June 15, 2025
By Olawale Adeniyi
The Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government is yet to release a statement addressing Nigerians, 48 hours after the gruesome killing of over 100 residents in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, by suspected armed herders.
Naija News recalls that a deadly attack, which occurred on Friday, June 14, has left dozens of homes and entire families burnt. According to Amnesty International and other sources, the death toll has crossed 102, making it one of the deadliest single attacks in recent times.
Despite widespread condemnation by local and international rights groups, religious leaders, and survivors, the Nigerian Government is yet to release a single official statement acknowledging the tragedy.
“They were trapped and burnt alive”
Eyewitnesses and survivors of the Yelewata massacre told Daily Post that the attackers arrived in the dead of night, heavily armed and coordinated.
According to them, entire households were wiped out as gunmen set homes ablaze, forcing occupants to burn alive in their sleep.
“Those who tried to escape were chased and killed. Others couldn’t come out because the attackers had already sprayed fuel on the doors before setting the buildings ablaze,” – Comrade Joseph Apahar Joo, Media and Publicity Officer for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) unit in Benue State.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the attack, with spokesperson SP Catherine Anene stating that investigations were ongoing. However, the survivors insist that help came too late.
FG Speaks Up, But On Iran
However, in sharp contrast, the Federal Government has been swift in addressing an international conflict on the other continent from Nigeria.
On June 14, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning Israel’s retaliatory strikes against Iran, calling for “maximum restraint” and urging the parties involved to avoid escalation.
“Nigeria expresses its grave concern and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urges both parties to exercise utmost restraint in the interest of regional and global peace,” the statement read. It also urged both parties to “exercise utmost restraint in the interest of regional and global peace.”
Meanwhile, Pope Leo on Sunday offered prayers for the victims, describing the occurrence as a “terrible massacre”.
Speaking during his Sunday Angelus prayer, the pontiff said most of the victims were internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had sought shelter at a local Catholic mission in the area, making the attack even more horrifying.
“I am praying for security, justice, and peace in Nigeria,” Pope Leo said from St. Peter’s Square.
“In a special way, I am thinking of the rural Christian communities of Benue State, who have been relentless victims of violence.”

Political climate reassuring after Yunus-Tarique talks: Rizwana
Jun 16, 2025
Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan yesterday said the current political atmosphere appears reassuring in light of the recent meeting between Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman in London.
"Now, political parties will express their views from their respective positions. If they have anything to discuss, surely they will convey it to the chief adviser," she said.
Asked whether tensions between the government and the BNP regarding the upcoming election had eased, the adviser said, "I don't think there was anything of that sort in the first place. Whether it's politics, elections, democracy or reforms -- everything must progress through dialogue. That's why I see the ongoing dialogue as a positive development."
Yunus and Tarique met for 90 minutes in London, during which they reportedly agreed to hold the next general election in the week preceding Ramadan next year, instead of early April, subject to the completion of necessary preparations.
A joint statement issued after the meeting described the discussion as a breakthrough that could help dispel political deadlock and improve relations between the interim administration and the country's largest political party.
The environmental adviser made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on the first working day after the Eid holidays.
Our staff correspondent adds, government offices reopened yesterday following what officials described as the longest Eid holiday in recent memory, with the central administrative hub -- the Secretariat -- resuming operations after nearly 10 consecutive days of closure.
Despite the extended break, essential government services continued nationwide under special arrangements.
Staff at the Secretariat reported that while post-Eid attendance is often low, yesterday saw a strong return to work as the prolonged leave allowed employees to fully enjoy the break without needing extra days off.

Election timing: EC waiting for formal talks with govt
Jun 16, 2025
The Election Commission will understand the government's stance on election timing after holding formal discussions with it, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin said yesterday.
The EC may then decide when to set the date for polling, he told reporters at his office.
"Whether the national election is held in February or April — whenever it takes place, the Election Commission must be prepared," he said.
The EC and the government have yet to hold formal discussions on when the next national election should be, he added.
The election schedule is usually issued two months prior to the election date, he said, adding that it was not possible to set a date eight to 10 months ahead.
He reiterated the EC's commitment to holding a free, fair, and acceptable national election, saying that all preparations are being made with that objective in mind.
Before finalising the election schedule, the EC will assess the overall political and administrative situation, he said.
The preparatory process includes amending the Voter List Act to address certain legal gaps, he added.
Finalisation of the updated voter roll -- a crucial step towards ensuring transparency -- is almost done, he said.
In addition, the EC is working on registering political parties and redrawing boundaries of constituencies in order to ensure equitable representation, Nasir said.
In recent days, the possible timeline of the election -- April or February 2026 -- is being widely discussed in political circles.
"The timing will depend on discussions with the government and the readiness of all involved. Our responsibility is to prepare thoroughly, so we are ready whenever the decision is made," Nasir said.
Preparations for the upcoming national election have made significant progress, he said, urging all the EC officials to work collectively.
The CEC said, "Some people might still be hoping to win by capturing all votes from certain polling centres. That option no longer exists. They should wake up. They are daydreaming."
He said, "There's bad news for vote terrorists: no one will be spared if they resort to violence or irregularities. There will be zero tolerance... ."
The EC officials have been instructed not to serve partisan interests.
The CEC did not comment on a recent meeting in which Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman agreed that the election could be held in February.
"I can't comment on that. I don't know what was discussed behind closed doors."

Saudi crown prince, Greek PM discuss Iran-Israel tensions in phone call
June 15, 2025
RIYADH: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke on the phone on Sunday with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to discuss the escalating situation between Israel and Iran, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The two leaders reviewed the latest developments in the region, with particular focus on the repercussions of Israeli military operations targeting Iran.
They stressed the need for restraint and de-escalation, and underlined the importance of resolving disputes through diplomatic means, SPA added.

Saudi foundation displays projects at Dutch ‘GreenTech’ exhibition
ARAB NEWS
June 15, 2025
RIYADH: The Vegetation Cover Development Foundation, known as Morooj, presented its flagship projects as part of the Saudi delegation at Greentech Amsterdam, an international exhibition for horticulture held from June 10-12 in the Dutch capital.
Morooj highlighted its technical and operational capabilities, as well as its innovative environmental solutions based on best practices and global standards.
The foundation also presented examples of its strategic partnerships with various government and private sectors, as well as with international organizations.
The projects displayed included the planting of millions of mangrove trees, greening mosque areas, promoting community participation in environmental sanitation campaigns, and efforts to rehabilitate natural reserves in various regions of the Kingdom, all of which fall under the Saudi Green Initiative.
The foundation’s CEO, Wael Bushah, said that its participation in GreenTech further demonstrates the Kingdom’s efforts to reinforce its leadership in the environmental sector on an international level.
The exhibition, one of the world’s leading events focused on environmental innovations and sustainable agricultural technologies, is also an opportunity to build new partnerships and exchange expertise on the latest innovations in sustainable agriculture, afforestation, and ecosystem restoration.
Ultimately, Murooj aims to become an interactive platform for knowledge transfer and application, creating meaningful environmental and social impact in the Kingdom.
The foundation’s role of strengthening its international presence and exchanging successful experiences with various global environmental entities and organizations has been crucial to achieving the objectives of the Saudi Green Initiative, founded under Saudi Vision 2030.
SGI, which celebrated its second anniversary earlier this year, has reinforced the Kingdom’s ambitions to become a key contributor to global efforts to combat climate change and enhance environmental sustainability by promoting renewable energy, protecting terrestrial and marine areas, and reaching net-zero domestically by 2060, among other initiatives.

Jadal Library: A cultural oasis in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province
HIND ALKHUNAIZI
June 15, 2025
DHAHRAN: In the quiet village of Umm Al-Hamam, located in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, a lifelong passion for books has been transformed into a cultural haven.
Ali Al-Herz, a bibliophile and literary archivist, has turned his home into Jadal Library, a treasure trove of over 37,000 books, more than 100,000 newspapers and magazines, and antiques, some dating back more than a century.
Yet Jadal is not just a library; it is much more than that. It is a museum to explore, a philosophical space to reflect, and a stand against forgetting important cultural stories.
Al-Herz told Arab News: “Since I was born I have been surrounded by my mother’s books. I grew up immersed in this passion to the point where it completely took hold of me; I became a bookworm.”
The spark that ignited it all was when Al-Herz encountered the epic “Sirat Antar” at age 13. “From that epic and through it, I began to look into other worlds,” he said.
This curiosity and fascination ultimately led Al-Herz to create one of Saudi Arabia's most unique initiatives.
The name “Jadal” means “debate” or “discussion” in Arabic, reflecting the library’s curious spirit. For Al-Herz, the goal is not just to preserve texts but also to preserve the idea of questioning and exploring ideas.
Al-Herz said: “I chose this name for the library because it is deeply rooted in ancient Greek philosophical history and in our own Arab-Islamic cultural tradition, particularly in our religious heritage.”
The philosophical atmosphere fills three main halls — named after Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle — which welcome visitors into a curated world of reading and reflection.
Rare manuscripts, ancient texts, newspapers, and antiques have been carefully archived. Each piece is a whisper from the past speaking into the future.
Al-Herz explained: “Even my recent focus on buying books has mostly shifted toward rare editions and old prints, to create a harmony between heritage and modernity.”
But Jadal is not stuck in nostalgia, as every two weeks Al-Herz holds a literary gathering. The event brings back a tradition that was once important in the intellectual life of Arabs.
It is an environment where writers, scholars, and thinkers gather over Arabic coffee to exchange ideas in a vibrant atmosphere.
And in a time when people seek instant information online, Al-Herz still uses traditional methods. “There is an ongoing struggle between two generations,” he observed. “Victory will ultimately go to this latter generation once my generation becomes extinct. Paper libraries will then be transformed into museums.”
Perhaps he is right; but for now, in the heart of Qatif’s countryside, Jadal Library lives on, and it is a place where ink, memory, debate, and heritage continue to shape the cultural soul of the Kingdom.

Sabah govt committed to preserving state’s cultural, multi-ethnic heritage - Hajiji
Bernama
15-06- 2025
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government remains committed to implementing comprehensive initiatives aimed at preserving and strengthening the cultural heritage of the state’s multi-racial communities, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
He said the ongoing efforts were crucial to ensure the state’s cultural treasures continued to be preserved, appreciated and passed down to future generations amid rapid global changes.
“In an ever-changing world, it is vital to ensure that local culture remains relevant and is understood by both present and future generations. The younger generation are not just inheritors but also guardians of the heritage that will shape the future of this state.
“The preservation of cultural heritage is essential to ensure the continuity of a community’s identity, values and traditions. I therefore hope that ethnic associations in the state will continue to promote their respective cultures, customs and languages so that they are not lost over time,” he said in a statement in conjunction with the Sabah Ethnic Day celebration here tonight.
The event was officiated by the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, who was accompanied by his wife, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin. Also present was Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who is also the State Local Government and Housing Minister.
Hajiji said efforts to preserve cultural heritage would also help attract more tourists to Sabah, in line with the state government’s target of 3.5 million tourist arrivals this year.
“The spirit of goodwill in diversity is the foundation of the people’s strength in this state. Therefore, I urge all Sabahans to continue nurturing the values of tolerance, mutual respect and harmony regardless of ethnic or religious background,” he said.

Cops hunt purported Haj scam mastermind after 47 elderly Malaysian pilgrims allegedly forced to walk to Mecca
15 Jun 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Police are in the process of identifying those responsible for an alleged Haj package scam involving a group of elderly pilgrims who claimed they were confined against their will and forced to walk through dangerous routes in Saudia Arabia.
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department acting director Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali said an investigation paper had been opened under Section 420 of the Penal Code following three reports lodged by the victim’s next of kin, two in Mantin, Negeri Sembilan, and one in Ayer Hitam, Johor.
“It is too early to confirm a cross-border fraud. We are gathering statements and evidence to determine whether the syndicate is operating with certain agents or not.
“We are waiting for the victims to return to record their statements and take further action,” he said in a statement today.
Muhammed Hasbullah said the police will also work with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC) to blacklist companies offering Haj packages without approval, stressing that they are committed to taking firm action against those involved in such scams to protect the people from becoming victims.
At the same time, Muhammed Hasbullah expressed his appreciation for the media’s cooperation in helping to disseminate information and raise public awareness that only individuals with an official Haj visa are to perform the pilgrimage.
Yesterday, a media report cited that 47 Malaysian pilgrims had allegedly fallen victim to a Haj scam by a local agent involving a well-known religious figure.
The daughter of one of the victims, who claimed that her parents and aunt, who left for Saudi Arabia with the agent on May 9, were forced to trek through dangerous routes from Jeddah to Mecca without proper documents, food, or water, allegedly to avoid detection by Saudi authorities.
The group of pilgrims also claimed that they were locked in a dark, cramped room and were told to pay an additional RM9,000 to retrieve belongings they had left behind, despite already having paid RM30,000 for the Haj package. — Bernama

Police arrest man in Haj scam involving elderly pilgrims forced to trek perilous routes and locked up in Saudi Arabia
16 Jun 2025
SEREMBAN, June 16 — A 67-year-old man has been remanded for four days to assist in the probe into a Haj package scam involving elderly pilgrims who claimed they were confined and forced to walk through dangerous routes in Saudi Arabia.
Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yusoff said the suspect was nabbed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday following several reports lodged against him here, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
He said preliminary investigations revealed that the victims from Mantin, aged between 30 and 60, suffered losses amounting to RM81,000.
“The victims comprised a husband and wife and their daughter. We suspect more victims may have been affected by this fraudulent scheme.
“We are still investigating to determine whether the scam was operated by an individual or through an agency,” he told reporters at the Seremban City Council Hall today.
Ahmad Dzaffir also called on other victims of Haj scams to lodge police reports to aid the investigation.
Yesterday, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department acting director Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali said three police reports have been received from the victims’ next of kin, namely two in Mantin and one in Ayer Hitam, Johor.

Public donations for aid allegedly redirected over a decade by NGO leaders to buy crypto, homes, jewellery — MACC probes RM26m abuse
By Malay Mail
16 Jun 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has uncovered a suspected misappropriation of approximately RM26 million in public donations by a non-governmental organisation (NGO), believed to have occurred over the past decade.
According to Berita Harian (BH), the alleged abuse of funds — which spans from 2015 to 2025 — was discovered following the arrest of five individuals, including the NGO’s chairman, secretary, treasurer, finance officer, and another staff member.
The arrests were made under Op Serantau, in an operation led by the Selangor MACC, with raids conducted across Selangor, Melaka, and Penang beginning last Thursday.
All five suspects are currently under a seven-day remand. Four of them will be held until Wednesday, while the fifth — the chairman — remains in custody until Thursday, following a court order granted in Melaka on June 13.
A source familiar with the investigation said the suspects are believed to have siphoned off donations received from the public, using them for personal gain. Their methods allegedly included transferring funds into personal bank accounts and purchasing jewellery, vehicles, property, land, and cryptocurrency.
“The operation’s findings point to similar patterns seen in the Aman Palestin case,” the source told BH.
The suspects are also believed to have redirected funds intended for humanitarian projects — including surplus money from the construction of wells in Syria — for personal use. Additionally, some of the misappropriated funds were reportedly channelled through the NGO’s accounts to provide loans to staff members.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests when contacted by BH.
He said the commission had seized various assets worth more than RM8 million, including over RM1 million in cash, jewellery valued at around RM100,000, approximately RM650,000 in cryptocurrency, and four properties worth more than RM1.4 million.
In addition, 14 bank accounts holding close to RM5 million have been frozen pending further investigation.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust. Earlier reports indicated that the chairman was also being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 for abuse of power.

Gambling addiction ‘mirrors’ substance abuse
Faiz Ruzman
16-06- 2025
PETALING JAYA: Gambling addiction can have far-reaching psychological effects, ranging from aggressive outbursts to paranoid delusions, according to mental health experts who warn that such compulsive behaviour mirrors the withdrawal patterns seen in substance abuse.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia psychology officer Dr Zulfikar Ahmad said gambling activates the same reward circuits in the brain as drugs or nicotine.
“Even without physical substances like drugs, gambling itself activates those same pleasure circuits,” he said.
“If a person doesn’t get that dopamine hit, the symptoms can mirror those of heavy smokers or drug users.”
He added that when access to that source of pleasure is suddenly cut off, the brain reacts similarly to substance withdrawal.
“This can lead to irrational behaviour, restlessness and, in some cases, aggression.”
A disorder typically refers to behavioural patterns that interfere with daily functioning but do not involve structural changes in brain chemistry, he said.
Zulfikar added that addiction can evolve through two stages – disorder and illness.
While a disorder involves behavioural disruptions that interfere with daily life, an illness reflects deeper biological disturbances such as paranoia or delusions.
“At the disorder stage, therapy may be sufficient. But once it progresses into illness, marked by symptoms like hallucinations or detachment from reality, medical intervention becomes necessary.”
Hospital Al-Sultan Abdullah psychiatrist Dr Nur Faizah Ali echoed these concerns, stressing that the compulsion to gamble can become all-consuming despite mounting personal or financial consequences.
“There is tolerance, meaning the person needs to gamble more to achieve the same psychological high,” she said.
“And when they stop, withdrawal can bring about agitation, restlessnes or even aggression, just like in drug addiction.
“For individuals who already have a predisposition, like those with schizophrenia or other mental health vulnerabilities, gambling can worsen the condition.
“The biological impact of gambling can contribute to heightened stress, which may trigger or intensify psychotic symptoms like delusions.”
These insights offer a stark context to a real-life case shared by a local technician, who opened up about his 28-year-old brother’s worsening addiction.
Speaking to theSun on condition of anonymity, the technician, posting under the alias asoka75, described a harrowing pattern of violence, paranoia and emotional toll that has fractured his family.
He said the addiction began after his brother lost money in cryptocurrency investments several years ago while working as a ride-hailing driver. What started as casual betting turned into a dangerous obsession.
“There were times he accused us of being part of a system trying to control him,” he said.
“He once tried to throw a chair at me during an argument about his debts. I cut off contact with him for two years, though he would still show up at home occasionally, as he had nowhere else to go.”
In another disturbing episode, the man reportedly dismantled the family car’s fuel pump, convinced someone had planted a bomb inside.
Despite their mother, who works as a tour guide, paying off some of his debts, the gambling continued. Fearing for their safety, the family has since restricted his access to shared areas in the home.
On June 10, their mother brought the man to a local health clinic in search of referrals for psychiatric evaluation and potential treatment.
