Mar 2024
On
the last day of the budget session of the state Assembly this week, as
Opposition legislators demanded a discussion on the Assam Cabinet's decision to
repeal the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, 1935, Chief
Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched into a fiery diatribe. Sarma said he will
not allow the marriage of five or six-year-old children.
Then,
suddenly shifting to Hindi in an Assembly where the proceedings are generally
in Assamese, a visibly enraged Sarma continued, “Aap log sun lijiye…Assam mein
child marriage nahi hone dunga jab takmeinzindahun. (Listen…in Assam, I will
not allow child marriage to happen as long as I am alive.)”
Waving
his finger and speaking alternatively in Assamese and Hindi, Sarma berated the
Opposition that he would not allow them to “do business with the children of
Muslim society” and that before 2026, he would shut down this “dukan (shop)”.
According
to the Assam government, it has decided to repeal the Act for two reasons.
Firstly, to inch closer to the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code in the
state. Secondly, and more importantly, to take a “significant step” towards
curbing the menace of child marriages in Assam – it was this line of argument
that Sarma took in the Assembly.
Notably,
the repeal of the Act comes in the backdrop of his government’s punitive,
retroactive crackdown on child marriage last year that led to the arrests of
thousands.
Even
as the questions on the pros and cons of implementation of UCC remain, the
claim that repealing this Act will be effective in preventing child marriages
in the state is contested.
The
Act essentially outlines the steps for registration of Muslim marriages and
divorces. As per the Act, Muslim registrars authorised by the state had the
authority to register marriages and divorces of Muslims.
Currently,
94 such registrars were functioning in the state. With the repeal of this Act,
all Muslim marriages have to be registered under the Special Marriage Act,
1954.
To
justify its decision to withdraw the law, the Assam government has cited
Section 8(1) of the Act that allows the registration of marriages involving
minors, provided their guardians apply for the same on their behalf.
Without
giving out any specific numbers, the state government has claimed that through
the powers vested in this section of the Act, several unauthorisedqazis were
registering marriages of men below 21 and girls below 18 years of age – further
arguing that repealing this Act will prevent alleged rampant underage marriages
amongst Muslims.
However,
several Muslim lawyers in Assam have contended that if the state government’s
sole intention was to curb child marriage then the specific section of the Act
could have been amended rather than a total repeal of the Act itself.
Furthermore,
it has been argued that the provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage
Act, 2006, already nullify the previously mentioned Section 8(1) of the said
Act.

‘You
Kill Muslims’: Jewish Man Harassed On London Underground Train: Campaign
Against Antisemitism
The tense encounter was filmed on the London
Underground on Thursday
Credit: X/Campaign Against Antisemitism

By
Danielle Greyman-Kennard
MARCH
3, 2024
A
visibly Jewish passenger was traveling on a London Underground train on
Wednesday when he was confronted by a man who accused him of killing Muslims,
according to footage shared by Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA).
The
CAA footage shows a young man aggressively blowing smoke toward the Jewish
passenger before moving to seat himself across from him. The tannoy
announcement that can be heard in the video indicated the pair were heading in
the direction of Edgeware, an area of north London with a sizeable Jewish
community.
We
have been made aware that last night on the London Underground, an identifiably
Jewish man noticed a fellow passenger staring aggressively at him. The
passenger then began blowing the vapour from his e-cigarette in his direction.
After a few minutes, the man started… pic.twitter.com/BEzU0orrpg
In
response to the question, the man answers after a prolonged silence, “You go”
while gesturing for the Jewish man to leave the train.
“You’re
a Muslim?” the Jewish man asked. Upon confirmation that the man was Muslim, he
continued, “I am very happy for you, but the thing is you’re vaping on the
London Underground.”
Smoking
on the London Underground is forbidden. A 2019 document by Transport for London
clarifies that “TfL does not issue on-the-spot fines for passengers found
smoking or vaping on tube or rail services. Such incidents are relatively rare,
and, generally speaking, staff will ask offenders to stop and/or leave the
service. Police are called to deal with those who refuse to cooperate, are
abusive, or threaten staff or others. Passengers can ultimately be prosecuted
for the offense and, if convicted, may be fined via the courts. There are no
recorded incidents for prosecutions on the London Underground or TfL Rail in
the last year (although there is one case pending in relation to buses).”
The
interaction continued with the Jewish man making complaints over the smoking
before insisting that he had not done anything to the man to justify his
“problem.”
Toshiba
is harnessing its knowledge and expertise to deliver clean energy solutions
with rechargeable batteries that are safe FOR A NEW DAY.
The
man later revealed that the “lot” done to him was that the Jewish man wore a
“hat.” While the footage does not reveal the “hat,” it is suggested that the
Jewish man is wearing a kippa, a traditional Jewish religious garb that would
identify him as a Jew.
The
Jewish man subsequently told him that what he was doing was antisemitic. In
response, the vaper repeats, “But you kill Muslims.”
Campaign
Against Antisemitism said that they blurred the image of the man’s face out of
fear that he may be a minor. They described him as “a Middle Eastern male with
a black ponytail between the ages of sixteen and twenty years old.”
The
incident occured on the Northern Line in carriage carriage number 52585.
British Transport Police are investigating the incident and request that anyone
with information contact them with the crime reference number 2400026154.

LOUISVILLE,
Ky. (WAVE) - Since the war between Israel and Hamas began, hate incidents
against Muslims have been on the rise in America.
One
Louisville mosque spent Saturday trying to fight the hate with peace and
education.
Al-Nur
hosted an open house to educate people on Islamophobia and teach people of
other faiths the truth about their religion.
The
Council on American-Islamic Relations reported a nearly 200% increase in
complaints since the war started.
Earlier
this week, WAVE talked with the director of GainePeace, the group the put on
the presentation, about why they wanted to do this.
“There
are so many misconceptions that people have about Islam,” Dr. Sabeel Ahmed
said. “So we are going to give a lot of time for people to ask questions as
they come in about Sharia and jihad and about what’s going on in Palestine.
People think that Muslims and Jews hate each other, eternal war. That’s just
not the case.”
Every
person who went got a copy of the Quran, some other reading material on Islam,
and a pamphlet on the ways that both Jewish and Muslim people have worked

WASHINGTON:
Israel has broadly accepted a ceasefire deal with Hamas, a senior US official
said Saturday, as the first American airdrops of humanitarian aid were carried
out over war-ravaged Gaza.
The
framework agreement envisages a six-week cessation of hostilities, which could
begin immediately if the Palestinian militant group signs off on the release of
the most vulnerable hostages it holds, the official told reporters on a call.
A
CENTCOM official told AFP that the meals were made up of US military rations
that did not contain pork, the consumption of which is prohibited by Islam.
Negotiators
from regional powers have been working around the clock to secure a Gaza truce
by the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in about one week.

India
Hero

By
Arbab Ali

Mar 2024
New
Delhi, India – Wakeel Hasan had to climb his neighbour’s 1.8-metre (six-foot)
wall to enter the rubble-filled plot of land where his house stood only a day
earlier.
The
police had barricaded the front of the land where his home, a single-floored,
two-bedroom house that his family had called home for over a decade, was
demolished on Wednesday by the authorities in Khajuri Khas, a densely populated
neighbourhood in India’s capital, New Delhi.
Only
three months ago, Hasan was a national hero and had made headlines for rescuing
41 construction workers trapped in a Himalayan tunnel for more than two weeks.
His
team of so-called “rat-hole miners” was called to the northern Uttarakhand
state after professional rescuers armed with tunnel drilling machines
repeatedly failed to reach the trapped workers. A nation of 1.5 billion people
held its collective breath as the rat-hole miners dug by hand for 26 hours to
free the buried men in November.

2024 And Family Traditions: Tips To Strengthen Your Bond With Family Members

Ramadan
2024: From cooking Iftar-special dishes together to creating a Ramadan-themed
photo album, here are a few tips to bond with family.
Ramadan
2024: One of the most auspicious months of the year is about to start and we
cannot wait already. Ramadan, or Ramzan, is the ninth month of the Islamic
calendar, which is observed by the Muslim community throughout the world. The
start and end of Ramadan are determined by the sighting of the crescent moon in
Saudi Arabia. This also determines if Ramadan will be observed for twenty-nine
or thirty days. This year, Ramadan is expected to start on March 11 and end by
April 9. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. The
pre-dawn meal is known as Suhur, and the fast is broken by dates and water –
known as Iftar. Lip-smacking dishes are also prepared during this time and
enjoyed with friends and family.
Ramadan
is the month of observing peace, service, community and reflection. It is the
time to hold our loved ones closer and celebrate life.

60

Mar

NEW
DELHI: In the middle of Nicosia's old city surrounded by walls, two UN
peacekeepers open a locked door and go back in time fifty years. They are
entering the buffer zone that separates Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots
apart, with lots of soldiers and barriers, on the divided island.
"When
you first get here it's really quite surreal, obviously it's not something that
most people will ever really experience," Sapper Michael Clasper, a
British peacekeeper from 71 Engineer Regiment said.
It
has been 60 years since the arrival of the UN peacekeepers, 50 years since a
coup supported by Athens tried to unite Cyprus with Greece, which led to a
Turkish invasion and the splitting of the island, and 20 years since a
referendum where Greek Cypriots said no to a plan by the UN to bring the island
back together.
"But
that also raises questions about UNFICYP and its long-term mandate," he
said, using the acronym for the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.

Senate To Debate Resolution To Ban Social Media Platforms Like X, Instagram,
YouTube, FacebookAmidst Opposition Dispute
Mar
3, 2024
ISLAMABAD:
A resolution advocating the prohibition of major social platforms, including
Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, X, and YouTube in Pakistan, has reached the
Pakistan Senate, Dawn reported.
The
resolution, scheduled for debate during Monday's session, is aimed at shielding
the younger generation from what it perceives as the "negative and
devastating effects" of these platforms, according to Senate secretariat
documents obtained by Dawn.
Senator
Bahramand Khan Tangi, formerly associated with the Pakistan People's Party
(PPP), is set to move the resolution. He was expelled by the PPP last month,
although no formal reference has been made against him, and the Senate
secretariat still lists him as a PPP Senator.
The
resolution contends that these digital platforms are fostering norms contrary
to "our religion and culture," leading to "hatred amongst the
people on the grounds of language and religion." It emphasises that using
such platforms to disseminate "negative and malicious propaganda"
against the armed forces goes against the country's interests.

Rupee
likely to remain stable amid dollar inflows ahead of Ramadan
March
03, 2024
KARACHI:
With traders waiting for the outcome of the International Monetary Fund's (IMF)
loan review and monetary policy's decision later this month, the rupee is
expected to trade in a narrow range in the coming days, supported by dollar
inflows from remittances and exports, The News reported Sunday.
In
the outgoing week, the local currency saw fluctuations within small bands in
the interbank market as it closed at 279.19 on Friday, slightly weaker than
279.11 on Thursday and 279.20 on Monday.
Traders
said the rupee was likely to remain stable in the coming weeks as there was no
major pressure from the demand side and the supply side was expected to improve
due to Ramadan and export proceeds.
The
market is closely watching the final review of the $3 billion IMF loan
programme, which is now due, and the monetary policy announcement by the State
Bank of Pakistan (SBP), which is expected by the third week of March.

Unalaska’s
Muslim prayer group welcomes members from all over the world
By
Andy Lusk
March

Finding
community in a new place can be hard for anyone, anywhere. It can be especially
tough when that new place is remote, isolated and features a revolving cast of
seasonal workers. But there’s a place in Unalaska for Muslims new to town to
gather and pray once a week.
Every
Friday afternoon around 2:30 in the UniSea central building conference room,
Muslims of Unalaska/Dutch Harbor hosts Jumu’ah prayer.
“One
of the most important things that Islam encourages is the spirit of unity and
not being selfish,” Hassan said. “You will find that some of the practices,
prayers and rituals in the religion itself cannot be performed unless you are
within a group.”
Group
prayer is an integral part of regular worship in Islam. In fact, whenever a
Muslim moves to a new place, the first thing they have to do is find who they
will pray with, Hassan said.

US
military aircraft airdrop thousands of meals into Gaza in emergency
humanitarian aid operation
Mar
3, 2024
US
military C-130 cargo planes dropped food in pallets over Gaza on Saturday in
the opening stage of an emergency humanitarian assistance authorised by
President Joe Biden after more than 100 Palestinians who had surged to pull
goods off an aid convoy were killed during a chaotic encounter with Israeli
troops. Three planes from Air Forces Central dropped 66 bundles containing
about 38,000 meals into Gaza at 8:30 am EST (3:30 pm local).
The
bundles were dropped in southwest Gaza, on the beach along the territory's
Mediterranean coast. The airdrop was coordinated with the Royal Jordanian Air
Force, which said it had two food airdrops Saturday in northern Gaza and has
conducted several rounds in recent months.
"The
amount of aid flowing to Gaza is not nearly enough and we will continue to pull
out every stop we can to get more aid in," President Joe Biden said
Saturday in a post on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.
US
Central Command said on X that "the combined operation included US Air
Force and RJAF C-130 aircraft and respective Army Soldiers specialized in
aerial delivery of supplies, built bundles and ensured the safe drop of food
aid."

Mosques
play pivotal role in uniting Islamic Ummah: Raeisi
Mar
3, 2024
TEHRAN,
Mar. 03 (MNA)– The Iranian President has described unity and solidarity as one
of the most urgent needs of the Islamic world today, noting that one of the
significant roles of mosques is to create unity and solidarity among the
Islamic Ummah.
President
Raeisi who traveled to Algeria to participate in the 7th summit of the leaders
of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) visited the Algerian Grand Mosque.
During his visit, he met and held talks
with the Imam of the Grand Mosque of Algeria.
Today,
enlightening about the oppressed Palestinian Muslims in Gaza as the main issue
of the Islamic world, and also talking about humanity in the world should be at
the center of the activities of mosques in Islamic lands, President Raeisi
said.
Fortunately,
the Islamic Republic of Iran and Algeria have a united position on the
Palestinian issue, he said, noting that if there were such a common position in
support of the oppressed Palestinian nation and confronting the Zionist regime
in the whole Muslim world, would the Zionists dare to commit such crimes
against the oppressed Palestinians?

Boko

Mar

The
governor of Borno State, BabaganaZulum, has reportedly asked President Bola
Ahmed Tinubu to reevaluate the decision to combine the Nigerian Defense Academy
(NDA) and the Army University at Biu, Borno State.
Based
on the suggestion of the Steve Oronsaye report, the Federal Government intends
to combine the two institutions in order to lower the cost of government. Zulum
expressed fear that closing the university might unintentionally advance the
goals of Boko Haram, given the importance of education in the area where the
group is opposed.

Nigerian
Muslims excited about Ramadan but sky-high food prices raise concerns
By
OladeindeOlawoyin
March
2, 2024
“Allahu
Akbar Llahu Akbar!” the Muezzin – a person who proclaims the call to the daily
prayers in Islam – says, his voice punctuated by chatters from passers-by and
traders haggling prices at the open market in the central part of Ile-Ogbo
community in Osun State. It’s a few weeks to the commencement of the Ramadan
fast, and there is excitement among Muslims in the community. The afternoon sun
baked the skin with fiendish delight, amid complaints about the impact of heat
waves on market women.
As
soon as the Muezzin completed the call for Zuhr – the afternoon prayer often
observed between the zenith of noon and sunset – a group of traders at the
market gathered to speak loudly about the increase in food prices ahead of the
commencement of the Ramadan fast on the 11th or 12th of March.
“Ramadan
is approaching but things have become too expensive, especially the major
foodstuff that we need to sustain our fasting,” a middle-aged man who later
identified himself as OlabisiLiadi, noted.
“Rice,
beans, yam flour and semovita are so expensive now that one can’t even afford
them. It’s a challenging moment for fasting Muslims this year.”
“The
rate of price increase in recent months has been astronomical and it’s scary
how we are going to survive once Ramadan begins,” she said.

AlUla’s

HAMEED
March

JEDDAH:
In AlUla and the wider Arabian Peninsula, an ancient method of storing and
preserving dates, known as shannah, stands as testament to people’s commitment
to the preservation of their cultural and culinary heritage.
Shannah
not only showcases the ingenuity of the past but also plays a significant role
in the region’s economic and agricultural landscape.
Harvested
dates are cleaned, dried, and stuffed into the animal skin, which is then sewn
together with palm fronds. The shannah is then left outside to soak up the sun
for a period ranging from a few months to five years. The meticulous shannah
process ensures the dates’ high quality is maintained throughout.
The
demonstration of the shannah process is a highlight of the annual AlUla Dates
Festival, providing visitors with firsthand experience of preserving dates in
this unique manner.
Their
unique taste and cultural significance make these dates highly sought after,
and a single shannah of dates can fetch up to SR1,500 ($400).
