UP Anti-Terrorist Squad Probes Use of Signal App to Spread Anti-National Propaganda and Radicalise Youth to Carry Out Fidayeen (Suicide) Attacks

Apr 20, 2025

--------

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on late Sunday registered an FIR and launched a probe into an alleged inter-state module that was using encrypted messaging platforms to circulate anti-national content and radicalise youth to carry out fidayeen (suicide) attacks.

According to ATS officials, a group was active on secure platforms such as Signal (under the name Al-Maut-ul-Hind), Instagram (Green Birds), Discord (Strangers), and WhatsApp, where they shared content promoting jihad, encouraged attacks on Indian security forces, and discussed targeting Hindu leaders and Israeli establishments in India.

The FIR was filed on Thursday by ATS Sub-Inspector Rahul Satyal against three youths, two of whom belong to Sambhal and one from Patna. Their identities have not been revealed, and an interrogation with the ATS team is being conducted.

Sources in the ATS said the group was allegedly conspiring to destabilise the country by pushing violent narratives online and planning targeted strikes. “The suspects were reportedly engaged in testing explosives and practising with air and pellet guns. They also shared training videos and posts to recruit new members for “suicide missions,” the ATS stated in the FIR.

“Initial inputs suggest that the accused were part of a larger network preparing for proxy warfare against the Indian govt,” said a senior ATS official. “They aimed to foment communal tension and incite attacks on sensitive installations.”

The FIR has been lodged at ATS's Gomtinagar police station under sections of UAPA, the Foreigners Act, and Explosives Act, and further investigation is underway to identify other members of the module and trace their funding sources.

The ATS has roped in technical experts to track digital trails across multiple platforms and is coordinating with central agencies for deeper intelligence.

BJP MP’s Remarks On Judiciary: Don't Need Our Nod to File Contempt Plea, Supreme Court to Petitioner

----------

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday told a petitioner that he does not need its permission to file a contempt petition against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey over his criticism of the apex court and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna.

The matter was mentioned before a bench comprising Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih.

The petitioner's counsel referred to a recent news report about Dubey's comments and said he wanted to file a contempt petition with the court's permission.

"You file it. For filing, you don't require our permission," Justice Gavai said.

The bench said the petitioner needs to get a sanction from the attorney general in the matter.

Dubey launched a broadside against the Supreme Court on Saturday, saying Parliament and state assemblies should be shut if the apex court has to make laws.

He also took a swipe at CJI Khanna, holding him responsible for "civil wars" in the country.

Dubey's remarks came following the Centre's assurance to the court that it would not be implementing some of the contentious provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act till the next day of hearing after the court raised questions over them.

Later, Anas Tanveer, a Supreme Court lawyer representing one of the litigants in the Waqf Act case, wrote to Attorney General R Venkatramani seeking consent to initiate contempt proceedings against Dubey over his "grossly scandalous" remarks "aimed at lowering the dignity" of the top court.

"I am writing this letter under Section 15(1)(b) of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, read with Rule 3(c) of the Rules to Regulate Proceedings for Contempt of the Supreme Court, 1975, to humbly seek your kind consent for initiating criminal contempt proceedings against Nishikant Dubey, Member of Lok Sabha from Godda parliamentary constituency in Jharkhand, for statements made by him in public that are grossly scandalous, misleading, and aimed at lowering the dignity and authority of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India," the letter said.

The BJP on Saturday distanced itself from Dubey's criticism of the Supreme Court, with party president J P Nadda calling the comments his personal views.

He also affirmed the ruling party's respect for the judiciary as an inseparable part of democracy.

Nadda said he had directed party leaders not to make such comments.

Al-Qaeda affiliate claims deadly attack on Benin military posts, killing 70 soldiers

COTONOU, April 20 — Al-Qaeda affiliate JNIM said it killed 70 soldiers in raids on two military posts in north Benin, the biggest death count claimed by jihadists in the country in over a decade of activity in West Africa, the SITE Intelligence Group said yesterday.

The West African state and its coastal neighbour Togo have suffered a series of attacks in recent years as groups linked to Islamic State and al-Qaeda have expanded their presence beyond the Sahel region to the north.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the report independently.

Benin’s army spokesman Ebenezer Honfoga did not respond to calls and messages.

SITE quoted a statement by Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) on Thursday saying 70 soldiers were killed in attacks on two military posts in Benin’s northeastern Kandi province in the Alibori department, more than 500 km (300 miles) from the capital Cotonou.

US group SITE tracks online content from militant groups.

The Sahel insurgency took root after a Tuareg rebellion in north Mali in 2012 and spread into neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger before reaching the north of coastal West African countries such as Benin more recently.

Thousands have been killed and millions displaced by the conflict, which contributed to spurring five military coups in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger between 2020 and 2023.

Military authorities cut ties with traditional Western allies such as France and the US after the coups and turned to Russia to help in fighting jihadist activity. — Reuters

Boko Haram Currently Uses Unmanned Drones to Monitor Military – Extremism Policy Unit

April 21, 2025

By Udeze Ekene

A security analyst and senior fellow of the Extremism Policy Unit at Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, Bulama Bukarti, has raised alarm on the technological tools in the hands of the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

Naija News reports that Bukarti said Boko Haram members have also opened social media accounts, particularly on TikTok, where they hold question-and-answer sessions and spread their extremist ideology.

Speaking with Channels Television on Sunday, the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change’s senior fellow disclosed that Boko Haram uses unmanned drones to monitor military formations, which led to attacks on super camps of the military in Borno State.

Bukarti, who has researched the extremist group for many years, said: “Right now, when you go on TikTok, you will see Boko Haram members’ accounts. They host live programmes and live shows where they propagate Boko Haram’s ideology; They justify the group’s violence, which they do in the Hausa language. They field questions from the audience and answer comments that are written.

“Even this week, there was a Boko Haram member who posted a 10-minute video on TikTok attacking me for speaking up against the escalating violence of the group. But it’s not just that. We know that Boko Haram now operates unmanned drones. They surveil military formations in the northeast with unmanned drones.

“What we have seen over the past three months was over seven Boko Haram attacks on super camps, on Nigerian military super camps. In Sabon Gari and lots of other places, they overran the camps. They dispersed the military, killed some, captured others and stole weapons, food, medicine and other equipment from those areas and fled into the bush.”

He emphasized the need for the government to step up in addressing the menace of Boko Haram.

Nishikant Dubey Slams Former CEC Quraishi, Calls Him ‘Muslim Commissioner’

April 20, 2025

Day after his remarks against the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna triggered an uproar, senior BJP leader and MP Nishikant Dubey on Sunday (April 20, 2025) attacked former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi, calling him a “Muslim commissioner.”

Mr. Dubey’s remarks were posted on social media platform X. BJP national president J.P. Nadda had distanced himself and the party on Saturday from Mr. Dubey’s remarks on the SC and Justice Khanna. Mr. Nadda had said that the BJP did not subscribe to Mr. Dubey’s views and that he [Nadda] had advised all party leaders against making intemperate remarks.

Mr. Dubey had accused the Chief Justice of triggering “religious wars”.

Mr. Quraishi had said on X on April 17, that the “Waqf Act is undoubtedly a blatantly sinister evil plan of the government to grab Muslim lands. I’m sure SC will call it out. Misinformation by the mischievous propaganda machine has done its job well.”

Responding to the remarks, the BJP MP on Sunday said in Hindi, “You were not an election commissioner, you were a Muslim commissioner. The maximum number of Bangladeshi infiltrators were made voters in Santhal Pargana in Jharkhand during your tenure.”

“Prophet Muhammad’s Islam came to India in 712. This land (Waqf) before that belonged to Hindus or tribals, Jains or Buddhists associated with that faith,” he added.

Mr. Dubey said his village Vikramshila was burnt down by Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1189 and that the Vikramshila University gave the world its “first vice-chancellor” in Atish Dipankar.

‘No partition’

He added, “unite this country, read history. Pakistan was created by dividing it. There will be no partition now.”

Mr. Dubey has often been aggressive in terms of his interventions both within and outside Parliament. Meanwhile, the BJP maintained silence on Sunday over his remarks on Mr. Quraishi.

The Congress has demanded that he be expelled from the BJP after his attack against the Supreme Court and Chief Justice Khanna.

BJP MP seen threatening Dargah members over azan in Pune; members demand action

April 20, 2025

An MP from Bharatiya Janata Party, Medha Kulkarni allegedly threatened members of a dargah committee in Maharashtra’s Pune district during Hanuman jayanti celebration.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media which occurred on April 12. The video shows Kulkarni along with her followers approaching members of Muslim community near Punyashwar Temple and Salahuddin Dargah.  She allegedly tried to stop the azan, Muslim call to prayer; she accused the members of playing the azan at a very high volume.

After the incident the members of the Dargah demanded strict action against the MP. However, Kulkarni has denied all the allegations and has threatened to file a defamation case against the members if the claims are proven to be wrong.

Kulkarni alleges, “while the aarti and Hanuman chalisa were going on, Dargah members played the azan loudly. We requested them to lower the volume but they argued with me.”

“I was unaware of the development as I was travelling. however I learnt about the videos of the incident going viral on social media. In the clips, it is clear that I covered my ears because of the loud sound. They argued  when I requested them to reduce the volume, the image just also shows police stopping them as they approached us. It is now up to them to prove their allegations. If they fail I will file a complaint against them,” she added.

However, in the video’s audio, only Hindu religious songs can be heard.

Anti-Israel posters surface in Sambhal, shopkeepers urged not to sell Israeli goods

Piyush Srivastava

21.04.25

Several anti-Israel posters were found pasted on the walls of houses, shops, mosques, temples and police stations at Chandausi in Sambhal district on Sunday.

Besides bearing slogans like “Free Gaza, Free Palestine” in Hindi, the posters also urged Muslims to “boycott” goods and items that were even remotely related to Israel.

“Remember that we are dead if we don’t feel like crying after seeing the deaths of our Palestinian brothers and sisters,” read another poster.

Some appealed to shopkeepers not to sell any Israeli goods.

Ramveer Singh, a police inspector in Chandausi, said: “We are collecting CCTV footage to identify those who put up these posters, which are divisive and may vitiate the atmosphere of the district. We are also interrogating some people.”

A video doing the rounds on social media showed two unidentified men sticking the posters on the walls.

A local resident, who didn’t wish to be identified, said it would be too simplistic to conclude that the posters were pasted by Muslims just because they contained anti-Israeli slogans and issued an appeal to the community.

“We know who has been trying to weaken the social fabric of the area for the last few months. In the past, those who wanted to target a particular community tried to do so by committing some heinous act and pinning the blame on them,” he said.

“The Muslims of Sambhal are so upset at the moment that they are not able to think beyond their own lives, let alone plastering such posters on the walls,” he added.

The far Right in India has always supported Israel, which has killed more than 51,000 Palestinians — mostly women and children — in an offensive in Gaza launched after Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel in October 2023.

The Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal is at the centre of a communal dispute following claims by Hindus that it was built on the ruins of a temple demolished by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

‘Not Pakistan or China, it’s hate that threatens India’: Farooq slams bulldozer politics

20.04.25

Asserting that the communal hatred is weakening the country, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Sunday said the recent violence in West Bengal was the direct fallout of the growing Hindu-Muslim divide in the country.

However, the former chief minister urged people to come together and demonstrate unity as “the threat is not from Pakistan or China but within the country from those who are spreading hatred in the name of religion”.

Abdullah was speaking to reporters after addressing a public meeting organised by his party to welcome retired senior superintendent of police Mohan Lal Kaith in the party fold at the border constituency of Marh near Jammu.

Kaith, who unsuccessfully contested the last year’s Assembly elections from the seat after taking voluntary retirement, said he decided to join the ruling party after consulting his supporters, pledging to strengthen the party at the grass-roots level.

In a veiled attack on the BJP, Abdullah said the violence witnessed in West Bengal recently was the outcome of the "communal divide spread across the country".

“The anti-Muslim rhetoric and running of bulldozers on the houses, mosques and schools of the community pushed them to the edge. The government cannot prove the legality of their action, which was finally banned by the Supreme Court,” Abdullah said, adding the country does not have separate laws for Hindus and Muslims.

Asked about some BJP leaders raising questions over the Supreme Court after its directions on the Waqf Amendment Act, the NC leader said the four pillars of democracy – legislature, executive, judiciary and the media – keep democracy alive in the country.

“If some wrong law is introduced, it can be challenged in the SC, and accordingly it comes out with its judgment,” he said, advising such leaders to desist from speaking against the SC.

He said the Waqf issue is sub-judice and everyone should wait till the final verdict of the court, which has raised some important questions.

Earlier in his address, the NC leader said the unity in diversity is the strength of the country and urged people to join hands and demonstrate oneness otherwise “we will not be able to safeguard the country”.

“The hatred which was created in the name of religion is weakening the country. We do not have the fear of Pakistan or China but we have a fear of this hatred. We have to overcome this and only then everything will be alright,” he said.

He said the people of Jammu are faced with water scarcity and electricity crisis despite the fact that water is in abundance and the electricity generated from it is being sold to Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh as per the agreement by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.

“This is our water and we have first right over it,” he said, as he also criticised Sinha for stopping the age-old Darbar move, a practice under which the government used to function six months each from Srinagar and Jammu.

He reiterated that the NC government will restore this practice, which is a bond to bring the Hindus of Jammu and the Muslims of Kashmir together.

Madhya Pradesh: Days after police book BJP leader, Guna SP transferred; unrelated, say officers

by Anand Mohan J

April 21, 2025

Days after the police booked BJP leader and Guna councillor Omprakash, alias Gabbar Kushwah, for allegedly leading a procession in front of a local mosque on Hanuman Jayanti and shouting provocative slogans, Guna SP Sanjeev Kumar Sinha was transferred and attached to the Bhopal Police headquarters.

Deputy Commissioner of Urban Police in Indore Ankit Soni, a 2017-batch IPS officer, will replace Sinha as new Guna SP, the April 19 order said. Sinha has been attached to the Bhopal Police HQ as Assistant IGP. Police officers, however, maintain that this was a “routine transfer” and had “nothing to do with the incident”.

On April 12, violence broke out following a dispute over playing DJ during the Hanuman Jayanti procession, led by Kushwaha, in front of a mosque in Colonelganj of Guna district. Over 13 people from the minority community were arrested in the days following the incident.

Sinha had told The Indian Express that the procession did not have permission. Despite efforts to stop it, the participants allegedly proceeded to halt in front of the mosque, played the DJ at high volume and shouted provocative slogans targeting a specific community. Kushwaha had remarked, “You won’t understand like this, we’ll have to send you to Pakistan.”

Sinha had booked Kushwaha under Sections 191(2), 299, and 132 of the BNS for unlawful assembly, hurting religious sentiments, and obstructing public servants.

Also, a group of Vishwa Hindu Parishad workers, who allegedly caused a disruption at Hanuman Chauraha following the violence, were also booked.

Court acquits Jitendra Tyagi aka Waseem Rizvi in 2021 hate speech case

April 21, 2025

Jitendra Tyagi, formerly known as Waseem Rizvi, has been acquitted in the 2021 Dharam Sansad hate speech case by a Haridwar court. The verdict, delivered on April 16 by Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Avinash Kumar Srivastava, cleared Tyagi of all charges on the grounds of “benefit of doubt” due to lack of conclusive evidence.

The case stems from a controversial three-day Dharam Sansad event held in December 2021 at the Niketan Ashram in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. Several religious leaders who attended the gathering were accused of delivering provocative and hate-filled speeches targeting specific communities.

The event sparked widespread outrage after videos of the speeches went viral on social media, leading to sharp criticism from across the country.

Among the critics was the Akhil Bhartiya Akhada Parishad, the apex body of Hindu monastic orders, which publicly condemned the hate rhetoric. The Parishad reiterated that Sanatan Dharma is rooted in peace, harmony, and mutual respect, and does not support any form of violence or hatred toward other religions.

Jitendra Tyagi, a former chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board, had announced his conversion to Hinduism in December 2021, shortly before the Dharam Sansad event. Following his participation, an FIR was registered against him at the Kotwali police station in Haridwar on January 1, 2022. He was arrested nearly two weeks later on January 13 near the Uttar Pradesh-Uttarakhand border.

Tyagi spent several months in custody before being granted bail in May 2022. The legal proceedings continued for over two years, during which the prosecution attempted to establish his involvement in delivering inflammatory speeches. However, the court found that the evidence presented was not sufficient to prove his role beyond reasonable doubt.

With the CJM court’s ruling, Tyagi has now been formally acquitted of all charges related to the Dharam Sansad incident, closing a significant chapter in the high-profile case that drew national attention and sparked debates around hate speech and religious tolerance in India. — With Agencies Inputs

JAKIM wants MCMC to take action against Facebook account owner over seditious posting

Bernama

21-04- 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been urged to take appropriate action against Facebook account owner “Lyan Liu” for allegedly posting seditious statements on social media.

Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) Director-General Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said the department viewed the matter as serious and had lodged a report with MCMC.

“JAKIM has submitted a complaint to MCMC so that appropriate action can be taken per existing laws, as the content (post) contains elements of extremism, religious hatred and racism.

“The statement uploaded by the individual includes extreme insults towards religion and race, which clearly go against the principles of racial and religious harmony that have long been upheld in the country he said in a statement.

He said the freedom of expression should not be abused to cause tension between races and religions because such actions not only trigger the sensitivities of Muslims, but also have the potential to disrupt public order and threaten national unity.

Sirajuddin called on the public not to be influenced or react emotionally to any form of provocation, but leave the matter to the authorities.

Jakim flags concern over Hadi’s claim politics outweighs Haj and umrah

By Malay Mail

21 Apr 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 — The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) has expressed concern over PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s claim that winning the Ayer Kuning by-election takes precedence over performing the umrah or Haj.

Hadi reportedly urged Muslims to prioritise political victory over the Muslim pilgrimages during a Perikatan Nasional event in Tapah, drawing parallels with the Treaty of Hudaibiyah and suggesting that political power is essential for Islam to lead.

“To ensure Muslims clearly understand the status of umrah and Haj in Islam and appreciate them based on Shariah guidance without misinterpretation, Jakim is currently reviewing the statement in coordination with the Federal Territories Mufti Department and other relevant authorities,” it said in a statement today.

The agency then urged all parties to be cautious when making public comments involving religious issues, so as to avoid confusion among the Muslim community.

The Ayer Kuning by-election is a three-way contest between Barisan Nasional’s Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, Perikatan Nasional candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek, and Bawani KS from Parti Sosialis Malaysia.

The Election Commission has set polling day for April 26, with early voting scheduled for April 22.

Fadhlina: Malaysia to teach Thai, Khmer and Vietnamese as elective languages in schools to boost Asean ties

By Opalyn Mok

21 Apr 2025

GEORGE TOWN, April 21 — Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said Malaysia is expanding its elective language offerings in schools to include Asean languages like Thai, Khmer, and Vietnamese.

Speaking at the Empowering Education Summit 2025 here, she noted that Malaysia’s bilingual foundation in Bahasa Malaysia and English is now evolving to support regional collaboration.

“To harness this, we must ensure our young people are multilingual, adaptable, and culturally competent,” she said in her keynote address.

She said the summit’s theme — “Shaping Asean’s Future Through Skills and Innovation” — is timely and urgent, as over half of Asean’s 670 million people under 35.

“This demographic advantage is a unique asset but it can just as easily become a liability if we do not act decisively,” she said.

She cited an Asian Development Bank report showing nearly 60 per cent of jobs in the region face disruption from automation by 2030.

“Yet, too many students are still learning through rote memorisation and outdated curricula,” she said, adding that education must move toward creativity, critical thinking, and lifelong learning to remain relevant.

Fadhlina said Malaysia is aligning its reforms with the Asean Work Plan on Education, focusing on curriculum reform, teacher development, and industry-linked technical and vocational education and training (TVET).

She said the revised secondary school curriculum (KSSM) emphasises digital skills, while the DELIMa platform supports wider access to digital learning.

Over 100,000 teachers are being trained in digital pedagogy through partnerships with Google, UNESCO, and local universities, she added.

TVET programmes are now co-developed with industries, especially in Johor and Penang, where E&E firms are shaping semiconductor training pathways.

Fadhlina said Malaysia’s National AI Roadmap is integrating AI into classrooms as a learning tool, alongside expanded STEM initiatives for underserved students.

To bridge the digital divide, she said hybrid solar-powered classrooms and satellite internet are being introduced in 180 remote schools in Sabah and Sarawak.

Fadhlina also touted the new National Child Development Centre in Putrajaya as a regional model for high-quality preschool education with an emphasis on cognitive development, nutrition, and teacher training.

Sudan: Thousands flee, more remain trapped in RSF attack on Darfur camp

April 20, 2025

Thousands of displaced Sudanese are continuing to arrive in Tawila after fleeing last weeks paramilitary offensive on Zamzam camp that the UN say killed hundreds, including children and aid workers.

According to Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières/MSF), thousands left the camp following an attack by the Rapid Support Forces and moved to communities already besieged and without lifesaving aid.

Many have made the journey to Tawila camp where the aid agency is operating.

"We are making an urgent appeal to put an end to the siege and the atrocities, to allow those who wish to flee to do so safely, and to deliver humanitarian aid, including by airdropping food and medicines to El Fasher if necessary,” the group said in a statement on Friday.

MSF suspended its activities in Zamzam in February due to the escalating violence and blockade, it said.

The NGO said that about 1,600 patients have required emergency services in Tawila, mainly because of severe dehydration.

The U.N. migration agency said the RSF attacks in Zamzam camp have displaced between 60-thousand to 80-thousand families in the first two days following the assault.

The majority of the families remain within El Fasher, the neighbouring capital city of North Darfur, which is under military control but has been besieged by the RSF for over a year.

Sudan plunged into conflict on April 15, 2023, when long-simmering tensions between its military and paramilitary leaders broke out in the capital, Khartoum, and spread to other regions, including the vast western Darfur region.

Since then, at least 24 thousand people have been tallied as being killed, according to the United Nations, though activists say the number is far higher.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, known as the RSF, carried out the recent attacks after the Sudanese military late last month regained control over Khartoum, a major symbolic victory in the war.

Plateau, Benue Violence: APC Chieftain Accuses ‘Forces’ Of Plotting Against Tinubu

April 21, 2025

By Justina Otio

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State, Jonathan Vatsa has claimed that the violence in Plateau and Benue states is politically motivated.

Vatsa alleged that some forces were sponsoring the attack to discredit the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Speaking via a statement in Minna, he stated that the same tactics were used against the former President Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2014, which ultimately led to its downfall.

He alleged that some individuals are funding violence and insecurity to make the Tinubu-led government unpopular and pave the way for their preferred candidates in 2027.

Vatsa, who is also the Special Adviser on Public-Private Partnership to Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago of Niger State, urged President Tinubu to take swift action in tackling the security challenges confronting the nation, warning that failure to do so could lead to his removal from power.

According to him, “In 2014, the same people set both Christians and Muslims against the Jonathan administration, using insecurity as a weapon to poison and deceive Nigerians and turn them against the government.

“These same people are back on the drawing board again. The killings in Plateau and Benue are all part of the game plan; it is all about 2027. The government should know this by now.”

However, the Niger State APC chieftain expressed confidence that the current security challenges would not hinder President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, citing the example of the previous administration’s eight-year tenure despite numerous challenges.

He also lamented that the government knows the perpetrators and sponsors of the violence but is afraid to take action against them, highlighting the need for decisive leadership to tackle the security issues.

Vatsa further claimed, “They are political merchants; if they are not in any government, then that government must not succeed. They will unleash insecurity and violence against the government.”

Bomb Explosion Reportedly Rocks Maiduguri Prison

April 21, 2025

An explosion reportedly rocked the Maximum Security Custodial Centre (MaSCC) in Maiduguri on Sunday night, April 20, 2025, around 9 pm, sparking a fire in the solitary confinement cell where prominent detainee Charles Okah has been held since mid-March.

Initial reports from within the prison suggest that the explosion may have been caused by a bomb that was thrown into Okah’s cell through the window bars. Eyewitnesses reported heavy smoke billowing from the cell, where Okah has been confined since March 16, 2025. This incident follows Okah’s open letter to Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi-Ojo, which exposed widespread corruption within two custodial centres in Maiduguri.

According to sources at the scene, Okah was heard coughing and choking in the thickening smoke, with his screams echoing throughout the compound. He reportedly shouted that the explosive device had been thrown into his cell, igniting the fire that consumed his quarters.

At the time of reporting, no rescue efforts were underway. Inside sources revealed to SaharaReporters that the prison’s security regulations require a long bureaucratic process to open a cell after hours, leaving Okah’s fate uncertain as the fire continues to spread.

“Shockingly, not a single fire extinguisher could be found anywhere within the prison compound,” said one source. “Similarly, night-duty officers seemed absent. Many inmates with medical conditions, such as asthma, risk dying before help could arrive at dawn.”

The growing fire, combined with the lack of medical and security response, has heightened fears among inmates of a wider crisis. Some inmates, concerned about their safety, may be forced to break open their cell doors to escape the smoke and flames.

Prison officials are also concerned about the possibility of a prison break if the fire is not contained quickly. The lack of immediate response has left the situation tense, with authorities under increasing pressure.

SaharaReporters attempted to reach Abubakar Umar, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, for comment but was unsuccessful. Phone calls and text messages to him went unanswered.

Charles Okah, serving a life sentence for his role in the 2010 Independence Day bombing near Eagle Square in Abuja and a bombing in Warri, Delta State, on March 15, 2010, remains a controversial figure, and his situation at the prison has raised concerns about the safety and security of high-profile detainees in Nigeria’s correctional facilities.

Pastor Bakare Warns Nigeria Is Heading Toward Tyranny Under Tinubu’s Administration

April 21, 2025

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

The presiding overseer of the Global Community Citadel Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has raised a serious alarm, claiming that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria is spiralling into tyranny and suffering from a brazen abuse of power.

Speaking during his state of the nation address marking the Easter celebrations, Bakare expressed his deep concern over the direction of the country under the current administration.

He highlighted the apparent erosion of democracy, particularly criticizing the collapse of the legislature, which he called a “bastion of democracy” that is now failing under the President’s leadership.

Bakare also pointed to the state of emergency declared in Rivers State by President Tinubu as a clear example of what he termed a “theater of the absurd.”

He slammed both the President’s actions and the National Assembly, which he accused of endorsing the measure. According to Bakare, the National Assembly has become the “most spineless” in Nigeria’s history, allowing for the President’s actions to go unchecked.

“Under your watch, Mr. President, the legislature has become a mere rubber stamp, endorsing every action you take without scrutiny,” Bakare said, referring to the passive role the National Assembly has played in the current political landscape.

The clergyman also took issue with the recent suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, which he described as a direct attack on accountability and transparency.

Akpoti-Uduaghan had demanded greater accountability from Senate President Godswill Akpabio, a call that led to her suspension. Bakare voiced his disapproval, questioning the Senate’s growing role in political violence and corruption.

He expressed disbelief at the verbal altercations in the Senate, particularly involving Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi and former Education Minister, Obi Ezekwesili.

Bakare condemned the Senate for becoming an institution of “political rascality” rather than a place for constructive discourse and leadership.

He accused the President of using his political influence to turn the National Assembly into a “haven for legislative rascality.”

He expressed disappointment in the current legislature, claiming it has become ineffective and unresponsive to the needs of the Nigerian people. “This National Assembly is the most ineffective in recent history, thanks to your political manipulation,” he told the President.

He further criticized the seeming “state capture” by the President, saying it is counterproductive and will ultimately harm the country. “This anti-climax can only lead to failure in the long run,” Bakare warned.

Bakare expressed that his decision to speak out was motivated by a desire for the President to succeed, noting that despite being in his first term, the current administration has drifted from its promises. He called on the government to embrace humility, justice, and fairness in order to avoid further damage.

“The renewed hope promised by this administration collapsed from day one with the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the Naira, which plunged millions of Nigerians into extreme poverty,” Bakare added.

In conclusion, Bakare urged the President to reconsider the current trajectory and prioritize the welfare of Nigerians over political ambitions. “It is time to change direction before it’s too late,” he said.

Punjab govt agency bars Ahmadis from buying land even in Chenabnagar

Imran Gabol

April 21, 2025

LAHORE: The Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency (PHATA) has published a residential and commercial plots auction advertisement in a daily on April 17, 2025, explicitly excluding members of the Ahmadiyya community from participating in an upcoming plot auction even in Chenabnagar, the headquarters of the Jamaat-i-Ahmadiyya, besides the neighbouring towns of Chiniot, Jhang and Shorkot.

The advertisement, issued by Jhang PHATA Sub-Region Deputy Director Tariq Mahmood, states that only ‘Muslims’ are eligible to bid for 17 residential and commercial plots. The auction is being held for commercial and residential plots in Satellite Town Jhang, Era Development Scheme Chiniot, Era Development Scheme Chenabnagar, Era Development Scheme Shorkot.

The advertisement states that anyone belonging to Ahmadi/Mirzai/Lahori/Qaddiyani is not allowed to participate in the auction.

It says that members of the community are not allowed to participate in the auction and their money/plot or other material will not be returned if the authority, at any later stage, finds anyone belonging to the Ahmadiyya community.

The move drew condemnation from human rights activists, legal experts and minority rights groups, who argue that it violates Pakistan’s constitutional guarantee of equality and the move coming from a government body is even more deplorable. Article 25 of the Constitution explicitly ensures equal treatment under the law for all citizens, prohibiting discrimination based on religion, they say.

The legal experts argue that PHATA’s exclusionary policy is unconstitutional. A human rights lawyer, Ehsan Ullah Jatt, says, “This is a clear violation of fundamental rights. If a government agency openly discriminates against the citizens based on faith, what hope is there for equality before the law?”

The Ahmadiyya community in Pakistan has been facing decades of persecution, including restrictions on worship and violent attacks. However, this latest move by a Punjab government agency marks an alarming escalation in the discrimination at the official level.

Amir Mahmood, a spokesperson for the Ahmadiyya community, condemned the policy, saying, “This is not just about plots—it’s about the state endorsing apartheid against Ahmadis. If we are barred from basic economic opportunities, how can we claim to be equal citizens?”

Despite the backlash, neither the Punjab government nor PHATA officials have issued any clarification or justification for the exclusionary clause. Social media has erupted with outrage, with many Pakistanis calling the move shameful.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) demanded immediate revocation of the discriminatory condition. “Such policies deepen religious apartheid and must be struck down,” says HRCP Chairperson Asad Iqbal Butt.

He says that all humans should be treated equally and the advertisement in question also violates the Constitution of Pakistan and international treaties which Pakistan signed. He says that the state is not treating all its citizens equally and it is like promoting the interests of a special group.

PHATA Director General Sikandar Zeeshan was not available for comments despite repeated attempts to get his point of view.

Provincial shares increased as more water becomes available

Khaleeq Kiani

April 21, 2025

• Kharif shortage prediction revised down from 43pc to 27pc as dam levels rise

• Irsa meeting to examine whether water releases to provinces can be increased further

ISLAMABAD: In a godsend development, the water shortage predicted for Kharif season has dropped by almost two-third to 27pc, prompting the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) to increase provincial water shares.

This has brightened hopes in the coming days for better cotton sowing as a 43pc water shortage was earlier feared to dent Kharif crops.

The water regulator is also expected call a meeting of its advisory committee, the second in almost a month, to review latest situation and examine if water discharges to provinces could be further enhanced.

An official said the decision to increase provincial water shares and releases was taken at a meeting of the five-member Irsa, which noted significant improvement in river flows and the water storage situation.

The Irsa advisory committee had earlier resisted provincial pressures, particularly from Sindh for lower allocations and water releases and had given monthly allocations to provinces from the maximum shortage scenario.

As a result, the provinces were given minimum shares, mostly sufficient only for drinking purposes, instead of irrigation. The provinces generally delayed sowing crops where possible, said an official.

Melting snow, rains

In the meanwhile, temperatures in Skardu and adjoining catchment areas increased to 19pc-20pc and river flows improved with snow melting over the past two weeks. The Irsa, however, warned that temperatures were forecast to dip in the coming seven to eight days in view of ongoing rainy spell and result in fewer river flows.

The official said Irsa had released lower shares to provinces than intended, particularly in case of Sindh to ensure balanced supplies once sowing comes into full swing.

The precautionary strategy paid off and shortage dropped by 16 percentage points to 27pc now from 43pc estimated at the start of the season and about 1.3 million acre feet (MAF) of water storage was currently available in major dams as river flows improved, he said.

He said the unpredictable climatic conditions required cautioned approach. In such conditions, it was easier to start with extreme shortage estimate and gradually increase releases in line with the pace of sowing, instead of starting the season with higher discharges and then scale it down at the cost of standing crops.

Provincial shares

Irsa increased Punjab’s releases from 41,000 to 64,800 cusec while Sindh’s share was increased from 35,000 to 45,000 cusec for the next 10 days, ending early next week. Releases to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan remained unchanged at 1,900 and 500 cusec, respectively as they remained exempted from application of cut in their shares.

Officials said the inflows had improved to 52,000 cusec at Tarbela Dam on Sunday against 22,000 cuesec at the time of water allocations by the advisory committee with effect from April 1, the start of Kharif season.

Against these inflows, the outflows had slightly increased from 15,000 cusec on April 1 to about 20,000 cusec at present, building a live storage of about 0.435 MAF as conservation level increased to 1,427 feet from 1,404 feet.

On the other hand, inflows in River Jhelum at Mangla Dam were reported at 42,000 cusec on Sunday when compared to 27,000 cusec early this month. Its outflows were also increased from 15,000 to 25,000 cusec. During this period, the conservation level at Mangla Dam improved to 1,118 feet from 1,074 feet earlier this month, improving the water resource to 0.657 MAF from almost zero.

Total inflows at rim stations was reported at 148,000 cusec on Sunday against 93,000 cusec on April 1 while total outflows were recorded at 99,000 cusec against 73,000 cusec reported earlier. Total live storage was reported at 1.293MAF on Sunday. It was zero at the start of the season.

On March 26, Irsa had forecast an unprecedented water shortage, making it unpredictable to plan water supplies for the entire season. The advisory committee had thus decided to make only ‘drinking supplies’ for the month of April and then review the situation.

The Irsa advisory committee had noted that because of no storage in any of the three storages, water discharges at rim stations stood at 51pc shortage which went beyond 60pc while reaching provincial canal heads.

“The Irsa Advisory Committee duly accounting the unclear climatical parameters and keeping in view the Summer 2025 Weather Outlook presented by Pakistan Meteorological Department, approved the water availability only for the month of April 25 with 43pc system shortfall,” said an official statement issued in the last week of March.

The Met Office had earlier forecast below-normal rain and above normal temperatures especially across Northern and Southern tips of the country for the months of April, May and June and had reported that winter snowfall in the catchments of Indus and Jhelum was recorded as 26.8 inches against the normal of 49.7 inches (i.e., 31pc less), therefore, fewer inflows at the rim station than normal.

Rice, sugarcane, cotton, maize, and mash are some of the key crops of the Kharif season that starts in April and lasts until September.

Over 27pc union councils of Balochistan non-functional

Saleem Shahid

April 21, 2025

QUETTA: More than two years after the local government elections in Balochistan, more than 27 per cent of union councils across the province remain non-functional due to a lack of funding, while elections for the Quetta Metropolitan Corporation (QMC) have yet to be held, leaving the civic body under administrative control.

This was disclosed during a session on the state of local government, organised by the Balochistan Women Business Association (BWBA) at the Quetta Press Club.

The event was attended by a large number of stakeholders, including Chief Officer of the Local Government Metropolitan Corporation Matiur Rehman Kasi, and former councillors Yasmeen Mughal, Aslam Rind, Behram Baloch, Zafar Baloch, Behram Lehri and others.

Zahra Hassan, organiser of the BWBA, opened the discussion by emphasising the role of elected local governments in solving public issues at the grassroots level. She said operational and empowered local bodies were key to addressing people’s daily problems through their elected representatives.

Speakers described local government as the backbone of democratic governance, noting that Pakistan, especially Balochistan, has one of the weakest and most dysfunctional local government systems.

Out of Balochistan’s 871 union councils, more than a quarter have yet to become operational due to the absence of budgetary allocations, the participants noted.

They spoke at length on the importance and use of the local government system, which they said has ironically remained fragile under democratic governments but got more autonomy during the military regimes of Gen Ayub, Gen Zia and Gen Musharraf and even during the British colonial rule before the creation of Pakistan.

The absence of local government elections in Quetta was attributed to political interference and disputes over constituency delimitations raised by political parties, the participants noted.

They stressed that the objective of the local government system was to establish effective links between the government and the public, improve service delivery, introduce a registration system for residents, address basic issues, focus on basic infrastructure and ensure access to essential services like health, cleanliness and education at the grassroots level.

A strong local government system not only reduced public problems but also promoted transparency and democracy, they added.

It was observed that accountability and transparency could only be achieved through a strong connection between citizens and the government.

They urged the provincial government to immediately hold overdue QMC elections to allow residents of Quetta to elect their representatives and end the reliance on bureaucratic administrators.

They also demanded that the funds allocated for the local bodies be distributed among the local government institutions through the provincial finance commission to initiate development projects.

Talks to salvage PPP-‘N’ bond inch forward

Amjad Mahmood

April 21, 2025

• PML-N, PPP leaders meet in Lahore, former agrees to propose solutions in next meeting

• PPP seeks changes to ‘questionable’ local govt bill, highlights farmers’ concerns

• PML-N leader says canals project should be scrutinised on basis of data

LAHORE: After months of back-and-forth, the two major coalition partners, the PML-N and the PPP, on Sunday managed to make some progress on a series of contentious issues regarding power sharing in Punjab, with another meeting expected in a few days in which the ruling PML-N is likely to table solutions.

The senior leaders of both parties met in Lahore at Governor’s House to sort out differences on various contentious issues, particularly those concerning the local government elections and the farming community in Punjab. However, both sides agreed to meet again within the next few days to take the dialogue forward.

The huddle was the fifth sitting of the coordination committees of both parties, and participants included PM’s political adviser Rana Sanaullah, Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan, Punjab’s Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, who joined the meeting through a video link. Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Nadeem Afzal Chan, Ali Haider Gilani, and Hassan Murtaza represented the PPP.

After the meeting, PPP leader Hassan Murtaza told media persons that despite all the reservations, they had decided to go together, keeping in view the existing conditions in the country. He said his party pressed for local government elections and underscored farmers’ concerns.

“The PPP has strongly advocated for the immediate scheduling and conduct of local government elections in Punjab,” he said, emphasising that this demand emerged from the party’s commitment to grassroots democracy and the empowerment of local communities.

The PPP leader expressed reservations regarding the current local government bill, arguing that it lacked the fundamental democratic spirit, while the governance structure outlined in the bill was also questionable. “It contains the potential for political victimisation of individuals,” he said, calling for amendments to the bill to safeguard democratic principles and prevent political persecution.

The PPP also highlighted the plight of sugarcane farmers in the province, asserting that they had been denied their rightful share. Mr Murtaza urged the provincial government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, to address this issue promptly and ensure fair compensation. He said both parties agreed to work collaboratively to resolve all the pertinent issues, including those related to the agricultural sector, through continued dialogue and negotiations.

He said the establishment of two universities — one in Gujjar Khan and another in Pind Dadan Khan — was also taken up during the meeting and the PML-N representatives promised the PPP side to meet again next week with some workable solutions regarding these issues.

Answering a question about whether the meeting also discussed the ongoing Sindh-Punjab controversy on new canals, PML-N leader Ahmed Khan said that the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) was the appropriate platform for resolving water-related disputes.

He asserted that a universally accepted formula for water distribution already existed, and that both Punjab and Sindh should adhere to this formula to utilise their respective share of water.

The Punjab Assembly speaker further said that water shortage was also being faced in various areas of Punjab, including Kasur, Chiniot and Sargodha, saying that climate change had caused almost 10 million acre feet of water shortage in the country’s river system.

The PML-N leader called for looking at the issue from a technical perspective on the basis of data instead of taking any political position. He also said that each federating unit had the right to vigorously guard their water share.

“Today we pay tribute to his political and intellectual contributions,” he added.

He said, “The thoughts, philosophy, and poetry of Allama Iqbal are a beacon of light for us, and we need to follow the message of Iqbal in our individual capacity and national life.”

Allama Iqbal was not only a poet but also a thinker and reformer who felt the anguish of the downfall of the Islamic Ummah and used his thoughts and verses as a medium to awaken the Ummah, he continued.

He said Iqbal’s poetry revolved around the concepts of selfhood, reformation, divine love, freedom of thought, and renaissance of the Ummah.

According to Iqbal, the salvation of the Muslim Ummah not only lay in political freedom but was also attainable through intellectual and spiritual awakening, he added.

Federalist Assembly unveils Draft Constitution for Federal Republic of Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati

April 21, 2025

The Federalist Assembly of Afghanistan unveiled the draft Constitution of the Federal Republic as a foundational document aimed at ending chronic crises and establishing lasting peace through a transformation of the country’s political system.

In an online conference held on Sunday, April 20, the Federalist Assembly of Afghanistan presented a preliminary draft of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Afghanistan. The event was attended by notable Afghan political figures, including Sarwar Danish, former Vice President, and Latif Pedram, a former Member of Parliament and leader of the National Congress Party of Afghanistan.

During the session, the Assembly introduced the draft as a comprehensive document crafted through careful analysis of past political systems and constitutional frameworks. They emphasized that the proposed constitution reflects a deep study of Afghanistan’s historical governance challenges and seeks to provide a sustainable political structure for the future.

The Federalists asserted that the centralized system of governance has been a root cause of persistent instability and internal conflict in Afghanistan. They advocate for a federal model that would better reflect the country’s ethnic, linguistic, and regional diversity, potentially fostering inclusion and stability.

Although the draft is not yet considered final, the Assembly reported that it consists of 12 chapters and 207 articles. They stressed that it remains open for further public consultation, expert review, and refinement. The aim, they noted, is to build national consensus around a viable federal system.

This initiative follows a previous conference in Austria, where Afghan political thinkers and diaspora members gathered to debate Afghanistan’s political future. The ongoing discussion highlights the increasing interest in federalism among exiled Afghan leaders and intellectuals.

Despite growing discourse, several prominent political figures and officials from the former Afghanistan government remain firmly opposed to a federal structure, arguing it could deepen divisions and weaken national unity. They continue to advocate for a reformed centralized model instead.

The unveiling of this draft constitution marks a significant step in the evolving dialogue about Afghanistan’s political restructuring. With the country’s future governance still uncertain, the document may spark critical debates across Afghanistan’s communities both inside and outside the country.

For any future framework to be legitimate and enduring, it must be inclusive and reflective of Afghanistan’s diverse population. As discussions progress, the role of public engagement, international expertise, and historical lessons will be key to shaping a system that ensures peace, representation, and long-term stability.

Over 100 migrants freed from Pakistani jails and returned to Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati

April 21, 2025

Over 100 Afghan migrants were freed from Pakistani jails and have returned to Afghanistan, following their brief detention.

The Ministry of Refugees and Returnees has announced the release of 115 Afghan migrants from Pakistani prisons. The release occurred on April 21, when the migrants returned through the Spin Boldak border crossing.

According to the statement, the migrants had been detained in various regions of Pakistan and spent between one to three days in detention before being freed. These migrants were part of a larger group of Afghan nationals who were arrested in Pakistan for illegal residency.

Over the past week, hundreds of Afghan migrants have been released from Pakistani prisons and returned to Afghanistan. This is part of a broader effort by the Afghan government to ensure the safe return of its citizens.

Afghan migrants have been detained mainly for lacking legal residence documents or using Afghan citizenship cards, which Pakistan no longer recognizes.

Earlier, the Ministry of Refugees and Returnees reported that 175 Afghan prisoners were released from Pakistani jails and returned home. Meanwhile, Pakistan has begun the second phase of deporting Afghan refugees, with 33,258 migrants expelled through the Torkham border.

However, the issue of illegal Afghan migrants in Pakistan persists, with Pakistani authorities continuing to expel migrants. As of now, over 84,000 Afghans have been deported in less than a month, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by Afghan nationals in Pakistan.

This trend reflects the complex situation of Afghan migration, where issues of legal status and border management continue to cause tension between the two countries. The return of these migrants highlights the urgent need for improved cooperation on migration and border security.

Probe in two cases against Hasina nearing end

Apr 21, 2025

ICT Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam yesterday said the investigation into allegations against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina is nearing completion, with the probe report likely to be submitted as early as next week.

However, he said the prosecution has sought a two-month extension to submit the report to ensure transparency in the investigation, a request that was granted by the court.

Earlier in the day, the tribunal extended the deadline until June 24 for completing the investigations into two cases concerning crimes against humanity involving Hasina and others, following a petition by the prosecution.

Tajul briefed the tribunal on some of the ongoing findings, stating that the crimes were extensive and the investigation agency required additional time to conclude the probe.

In one of the cases relating to the July uprising, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun is named as the sole accused apart from Hasina.

The second case involves allegations of enforced disappearances and extra-judicial killings. The ICT had earlier issued arrest warrants for 11 individuals, including Hasina and Maj Gen (forced retired) Ziaul Ahsan.

He also said probe reports in two cases over crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising are expected within a day or two.

The tribunal also extended until July 29 the deadline for completing investigations into a separate case filed over crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War in 1971 against Syed Titumir and two other accused.

Titumir, currently on bail, was present during the hearing, while the two other accused have since died.

Republicans threaten Texas housing project, allege attempt to bring Sharia law

Apr 20, 2025

Imran Chaudhary, a property developer in Texas, has alleged receiving hate calls almost daily over a proposed housing and community project. The threats escalated after his team revealed early plans for a new community development in East Texas, reported news agency AFP.

The proposal includes 1,000 homes, a hospital, a community centre, and a place of worship. The project is meant to serve a growing population near East Plano.

But opponents, including Republican lawmakers, are not convinced. Senator John Cornyn claimed the site may violate the rights of Jewish and Christian Texans. Governor Greg Abbott went further, calling it an attempt to bring in Sharia law. “To be clear, Sharia law is not allowed in Texas,” Abbott wrote on social media.

Texas has laws that reject the use of foreign legal systems like Sharia.

Chaudhary said the development is not for a specific community. “Anybody can use our services,” he told AFP. He said all legal guidelines are being followed, and even invited Abbott to a barbeque to ease tensions — but got no reply.

The EPIC community, which began in Plano 20 years ago, says the new land near Josephine is simply a much-needed expansion.

Still, protests and social media misinformation have slowed down the approval process. At a recent town hall, critics voiced fears about the nature of the project. Chaudhary and his team say they remain committed, but worry about rising hostility.

Thousands accessed sensitive White House info, floor plans under Biden and Trump admin: Report

Apr 21, 2025

More than 11,000 federal employees had access to sensitive documents, including White House floor plans and vendor banking information, due to a digital security lapse that spanned several years, according to a report by The Washington Post.

The breach, which began during the administration of former President Joe Biden and also involved the current administration of President Donald Trump, involved at least 15 files stored in a Google Drive folder managed by the General Services Administration (GSA).

Officials said the documents included potentially sensitive material such as proposed blast door designs for the White House Visitor Center and files marked as “controlled unclassified information” (CUI).

The files were accessible to the entire GSA workforce — over 11,000 employees — and some were editable. The GSA has launched an internal investigation and a cybersecurity incident report is underway.

The oversharing began in early 2021, during the tenure of former President Joe Biden, and continued until as recently as last week. Internal investigations and a cybersecurity incident report have since been launched.

“This kind of mistake is a challenge across all administrations,” said Michael Williams, a Syracuse University professor who studies international security. “These are absolutely not documents you want shared with 11,200 people.”

Although it’s unclear whether the East and West Wing floor plans were formally classified, experts say documents containing detailed layouts or embedded security infrastructure would normally be closely guarded. “Even if not formally classified, they would be restricted for obvious security reasons,” said Steven Aftergood, a former security policy analyst with the Federation of American Scientists.

One of the earliest breaches occurred in March 2021 when a safety survey with East Wing blueprints was shared agency-wide. A similar incident followed involving the West Wing, which includes the Oval Office, Situation Room, and Cabinet Room. These files reportedly remained accessible for years.

The GSA said it has protocols for detecting inappropriate file sharing, including automated scans and mandatory annual training. “Internal controls are not perfect,” a longtime employee told The Post. “But it’s not like we’re letting things happen unchecked.”

Nine of the 15 files were marked as CUI — a designation for sensitive but unclassified material — and at least ten could be both viewed and edited by anyone within the agency. The breach included not only architectural blueprints but also courthouse layouts, project manuals, and financial records.

The GSA’s Office of Inspector General uncovered the lapse during an audit of the agency’s Google Drive usage. The issue was flagged to the IT incident response team last Tuesday, and by Thursday, file-sharing permissions had been revoked. Investigators have so far been unable to reach the owners of the compromised files.

According to WSJ, Neither the White House nor the GSA has issued a comment. A representative for former President Biden also declined to respond.

This incident adds to a string of security missteps under both administrations. During President Trump’s tenure, officials mistakenly included The Atlantic's editor-in-chief in a group chat discussing military planning and used personal Gmail accounts for sensitive communication. In contrast, a 2023 special counsel report criticised former President Biden for storing classified notebooks at his residence.

Meanwhile, a separate controversy is unfolding at the Pentagon. US defense secretary Pete Hegseth is under scrutiny for allegedly sharing classified airstrike plans in a private Signal group that included his wife, brother, and personal lawyer, according to The New York Times.

The chat reportedly contained flight schedules for F/A-18 Hornets involved in US operations in Yemen. Unlike a previous leak in March — where a journalist was mistakenly added — the Signal group was reportedly created by Hegseth himself.

This is the second time Hegseth has been accused of mishandling classified military information. The Pentagon inspector general is now investigating both incidents. Those in the Signal group reportedly include Hegseth’s wife Jennifer, a former Fox News producer; his brother Phil; and his personal lawyer Tim Parlatore.

Trump's tough talk might help Liberal Mark Carney win a full term as Canada's prime minister

Apr 21, 2025

TORONTO: Mark Carney's political career is only months old, and it's already been a roller-coaster ride. The former central banker appeared destined to become one of Canada's shortest-serving prime ministers until President Donald Trump picked a fight with the US's northern neighbor.

Carney, who was sworn in on March 14 following Justin Trudeau's resignation and a Liberal Party leadership race, now leads in the polls heading into the April 28 parliamentary elections, marking a dramatic turnaround for a party that seemed headed for a crushing defeat until the American president started attacking Canada's economy and sovereignty almost daily.

Trump's trade war and threats to make Canada the 51st state have infuriated Canadians and led to a surge in Canadian nationalism that has helped Liberals flip the election narrative. In a mid-January poll by Nanos, Liberals trailed the Conservative Party by 47% to 20%. In the latest Nanos poll, which was conducted during a three-day period that ended April 19, the Liberals led by six percentage points. The January poll had a margin of error 3.1 points while the latest poll had a 2.7-point margin.

"Timing is everything in politics and Carney entered the political arena at a most favorable time," said Daniel Beland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal.

Carney's opponent is Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, a career politician and firebrand populist who has campaigned with Trump-like swagger, even taking a page from the "America First" president by adopting the slogan "Canada First."

"This election is a test about whether Canada will embrace or reject populism," Beland said, suggesting many voters view Carney as reassuring because of his experience and calm.

"Without the Trump effect, the Conservatives would probably be in a much stronger position in the polls right now. If Trump wasn't currently in the White House, it would be hard to imagine the Liberals being the favorites in this federal race, considering how unpopular they were just a few months ago."

Who is Carney? Carney navigated crises when he ran Canada's central bank and when he later became the first non-U.K. citizen to run the Bank of England since its founding in 1694.

His Bank of England appointment won bipartisan praise in Britain after Canada recovered from the 2008 financial crisis faster than many other countries.

Former US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson called it "extraordinary" that a country would choose a foreigner to head its central bank, and that it's a mark of how admired Carney is.

"He is calm and cool in a crisis," Paulson said. "He's a clear thinker and he understands finance cold. He's very well prepared."

Carney, 60, is credited with keeping money flowing through the Canadian economy by acting quickly in cutting interest rates to their lowest level ever, working with bankers to sustain lending through the financial crisis and, critically, letting the public know that rates would remain low so they would keep borrowing. He was the first central banker to commit to keeping them at a historic-low level for a definite time - a step the US Federal Reserve would follow.

Carney also helped manage the worst impacts of Brexit in the U.K. Paulson said Carney has the "perfect background" for these challenging times.

"Everything he's done, he's excelled at. Every job - the Bank of Canada, the Bank of England," Paulson said. "I don't know anyone who has dealt with him that doesn't respect him. Whether they agree or disagree with him, they respect him. He's got a very, very nice manner."

Both Conservative and Liberal prime ministers tried to make Carney their finance minister, the second-most powerful position in Canada's government. Former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper named Carney the Bank of Canada Governor and later offered to make him finance minister. Trudeau, Carney's Liberal predecessor, long wanted him as his finance minister.

Carney is a former Goldman Sachs executive. He worked for 13 years in London, Tokyo, New York and Toronto before being appointed deputy governor of the Bank of Canada in 2003.

He was born in Fort Smith, in Canada's remote Northwest Territories. When he was 6, his family moved to Edmonton, where his mother taught school and his father became a professor of education history at the University of Alberta.

Carney earned a partial scholarship to Harvard University, where he was the backup goalie on the hockey team. Influenced by John Kenneth Galbraith, who pioneered the popular notion that economics should be accessible to the masses, Carney took up economics.

A married father of four, Carney earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard in 1988, and master's and doctoral degrees in economics from Oxford University.

What would a Carney win mean for Canada-US relations? Carney has said Canada's close friendship with the U.S. has ended, and he squarely blamed Trump.

Trump mocked Carney's predecessor by calling him Governor Trudeau. He has not trolled Carney. But White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said this month that Trump had not changed his position that Canada "would benefit greatly by becoming the 51st state."

Carney said the 80-year period when the U.S. embraced the mantle of global economic leadership and forged alliances rooted in trust and mutual respect is over.

"There is no going back. We in Canada will have to build a new relationship with the United States," he said.

If elected, Carney said he would accelerate renegotiations of the free trade deal with the U.S in an effort to end the uncertainty hurting both economies.

"President Trump is trying to fundamentally restructure the international trading system and in the process he's rupturing the global economy," Carney said.

"The core question is who is going to be at the table for Canada," he said.

Trump administration reverses long-held guidance on 'road diets' for traffic safety

Apr 21, 2025

A stylist was just starting her shift at a salon in Kansas City, Missouri, when a car smashed through the storefront window and landed in the waiting area a few feet away.

Such crashes were so common along 31st Street that business owners regularly texted one another photos showing the damage caused by vehicles speeding along the four-lane road lined with shops, bars and restaurants, which drivers used as a shortcut between major highways.

"A wide road makes people think, 'We'll just drive as fast as we want on it,'" said Ryan Ferrell, who owns the property housing the salon, a bookstore and apartments above.

When concrete sidewalk barriers didn't work, Ferrell and other business leaders campaigned to put the street on a "road diet."

Removing lanes has been a tool numerous cities have used for years to calm traffic, despite resistance from some Republican governors. President Donald Trump's administration doesn't like it either.

Federal transportation officials once heralded road diets for cutting crashes by 19% to 47%, but criteria for an upcoming round of road safety grants say projects aimed at "reducing lane capacity" should be considered "less favorably," the administration said.

Forcing travelers into more constrained spaces "can lead to crashes, erratic maneuvers, and a false sense of security that puts everyone at risk," the U.S. Department of transportation said in an email statement to The Associated Press. "The update reflects the Department's concerns about the safety hazards associated with congestion."

Add a gas line, subtract some traffic lanes Kansas City saved some money when it converted 31st Street in 2022 because a gas line was going in anyway. It reopened with one lane in each direction instead of two, a shared turn lane near the signalized intersections, better pedestrian crossings and protected on-street parking spaces.

Road diets are now an almost automatic part of the process in Kansas City whenever a street is up for repaving. For years, federal guidelines said lane reductions were usually appropriate on roads carrying fewer than 25,000 vehicles a day. Most of the city's four-lane roads don't meet that threshold.

Bobby Evans, an urban planner at the Mid-America Regional Council who has worked on Kansas City's road diets, calls the strategy "a smashing success" and one of the most effective tools at reducing speed, crashes and injuries.

"In the architectural world you'd call it environmental determinism," Evans said. "You want to make it so they don't feel comfortable going too fast. You're really not slowing them down. You're bringing them back to the speed limit."

Rethinking the need for speed Numerous other cities have credited road diets with improving safety.

Philadelphia cited a 19% drop in injury crashes. Portland, Oregon, saw a more than 70% decline in vehicles traveling at least 10 mph (16 kph) over the speed limit. The average speed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, fell by 5 mph (8 kph) on some roads within months.

But Jay Beeber, executive director for policy at the National Motorists Association, an advocacy organization for drivers, said most road diets represent an ill-advised effort to force vehicles off the road. The number of vehicles may decline on dieted roads, but then surrounding roads have to absorb the traffic, he said.

"Those cars have to go somewhere," he said. "Cars are like water. They seek their own level."

Leah Shahum, who directs the Vision Zero Network, a nonprofit advocating for street safety, said road diets are inexpensive and supported by years of research. Cities in Republican-led states are among the converts and Shahum isn't sure if the Trump administration's new guidance will make them reconsider.

"I certainly hope that does not bleed over into indirectly discouraging communities from using this proven safety countermeasure," Shahum said. "That would be a real loss."

No negative impact on emergency vehicles Trump's transportation department cited delivery and emergency vehicles among its concerns.

When University of Iowa researchers surveyed first-responders in Cedar Rapids, their study published last year found no noticeable difference in response time when a road diet was in place. There was, however, a perceived need to educate drivers about what to do when an ambulance uses a center turn lane to pass.

Cara Hamann, an associate professor of epidemiology who co-authored the study, said she recalled no major examples of EMS or fire trucks being unable to get through.

"The road diet didn't cause a level of congestion that slowed them down," she said.

Road diet resistance before Trump Even before Trump, skepticism was growing in some red states.

San Antonio spent years planning to repurpose a formerly state-owned portion of its Broadway Street by removing vehicle lanes and improving a stretch for bikes and pedestrians. But Texas abruptly reclaimed the road in 2022 and nixed the project as GOP Gov. Greg Abbott ran for reelection and called for an end to anti-car policies.

"They basically used Broadway as a political football," said Bryan Martin, owner of Bronko Bikes, an electric bike repair shop.

Florida's Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill last year a 180-day review period and other numerous steps before a local government can eliminate a lane. He said it would prevent activists from intentionally clogging roads to slow vehicles.

Not all the pushback has come from Republican-led states. During the pandemic, Culver City, California, implemented a road diet to prioritize walking, biking and transit. But when cars returned and traffic backed up for miles, the city reversed the plan.

Some residents sued in Vancouver, Washington, saying the city should have put its road diets up for a public vote.

"I've seen people passing in the shoulder or the bike lane," said Justin Wood, one of the opponents. "It creates more opportunity for conflict."

Evans, the planner in Kansas City, said road diets can't stop all reckless drivers.

"If you are bound and determined to go 12 miles over the speed limit on a three-lane road, you're going to have to engage in some stupid, dangerous driving," Evans said.

Israeli opposition leader fears political violence over Shin Bet affair

April 21, 2025

TEL AVIV: Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid said he feared an outbreak of political violence connected to what he called a campaign of hate against the country’s internal security chief, whom the government has moved to sack.

“The red line has been crossed. If we don’t stop this, there will be a political murder here, maybe more than one. Jews will kill jews,” Lapid said at a press conference in Tel Aviv, adding that “the most serious threats are directed at the head of the Shin Bet, Ronen Bar.”

Bar’s dismissal as head of the internal security agency has been challenged in court by the opposition, which decried it as a sign of anti-democratic drift on the part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government.

Bar has suggested his ouster was linked to investigations into Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack “and other serious matters,” while Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has warned of “a personal conflict of interest on the part of the prime minister due to the criminal investigations involving his associates.”

The supreme court froze the government’s initial attempt to sack Bar, and earlier this month it gave the cabinet and the attorney general’s office until the end of the just concluded Passover holiday to work out a compromise.

Bar could resign soon, according to media reports, which would bring the matter to a close.

Lapid, leader of the center-right Yesh Atid party, argued that Bar should resign over his agency’s failure to prevent the October 7 attack, and acknowledged the government had the legal authority to dismiss him, provided it was done through due process and “approved by the court.”

But he also held Netanyahu responsible for a campaign of threats levelled at Bar.

Lapid presented screenshots of social media posts containing death threats against the security chief, telling Netanyahu: “Stop this.”

“Instead of supporting incitement (to hatred), support the Shin Bet, the security forces, the systems that keep this country alive,” he added.

In 1995, the assassination of prime minister Yitzhak Rabin by a Jewish extremist after a campaign of violent rhetoric against him sent shockwaves through Israel.

Some accused then-opposition leader Netanyahu of not doing enough to discourage incitement to violence at the time.

Israel cancels visas for French lawmakers

April 20, 2025

PARIS: Israel’s government canceled visas for 27 French left-wing lawmakers and local officials two days before they were to start a visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories on Sunday, the group said.

The action came only days after Israel stopped two British members of parliament from the governing Labour party from entering the country.

It also came amidst diplomatic tensions after President Emmanuel Macron said France would soon recognize a Palestinian state.

Israel’s interior ministry said visas for the 27 had been canceled under a law that allows authorities to ban people who could act against the state of Israel.

Seventeen members of the group, from France’s Ecologist and Communist parties, said they had been victims of “collective punishment” by Israel and called on Macron to intervene.

They said in a statement that they had been invited on a five-day trip by the French consulate in Jerusalem.

They had intended to visit Israel and the Palestinian territories as part of their mission to “strengthen international cooperation and the culture of peace,” they added.

“For the first time, two days before our departure, the Israeli authorities canceled our entry visas that had been approved one month ago,” they said.

“We want to understand what led to this sudden decision, which resembles collective punishment,” said the group.

The delegation included National Assembly deputies Francois Ruffin, Alexis Corbiere and Julie Ozenne from the Ecologist party, Communist deputy Soumya Bourouaha and Communist senator Marianne Margate.

The other members were left-wing town mayors and local lawmakers.

The statement denounced the ban as a “major rupture in diplomatic ties.”

“Deliberately preventing elected officials and parliamentarians from traveling cannot be without consequences,” the group said, demanding a meeting with Macron and action by the government to ensure Israel let them into the country.

The group said their parties had for decades called for recognition of a Palestinian state, which Macron said last week could come at an international conference in June.

Israeli authorities this month detained British members of parliament Yuan Yang and Abtisam Mohamed at Tel Aviv airport and deported them, citing the same reason. Britain’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy called the action “unacceptable.”

In February, Israel stopped two left-wing European parliament deputies, Franco-Palestinian Rima Hassan and Lynn Boylan from Ireland, from entering.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reacted with fury to France’s possible recognition of a Palestinian state. He said establishing a Palestinian state next to Israel would be a “huge reward for terrorism.”

Palestine Red Crescent says Israel army probe into medics’ killing ‘full of lies’

RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories: The Palestine Red Crescent rejected the findings of an Israeli military investigation that blamed operational failures for the killing of 15 Gaza emergency service workers, denouncing the report as “full of lies.”

“The report is full of lies. It is invalid and unacceptable, as it justifies the killing and shifts responsibility to a personal error in the field command when the truth is quite different,” Nebal Farsakh, spokesperson for the Red Crescent, told AFP.

Gaza rescuers say Israeli air strikes kill 25

April 20, 2025

GAZA:: Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that Israeli air strikes since dawn on Sunday have killed at least 25 people across the Gaza Strip, including women and children.

Israel resumed its aerial and ground assault on Gaza on March 18, reigniting fighting after a two-month ceasefire that had paused more than 15 months of war in the coastal territory.

“Since dawn today, the occupation’s air strikes have killed 20 people and injured dozens more, including children and women across the Gaza Strip,” Mahmud Bassal, spokesman for the civil defense agency told AFP.

In a separate statement later, the agency reported that five people were killed in an Israeli drone strike on a group of civilians in eastern Rafah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday vowed to continue the war and bring home the remaining hostages held in Gaza without yielding to Hamas’s demands.

“We are at a critical stage of the campaign, and at this point, we need patience and determination to win,” Netanyahu said in a statement, rejecting calls from the militants to end the war and withdraw troops from Gaza.

Since Israel resumed its offensive last month, at least 1,827 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.

The overall death toll in the Gaza war has reached 51,201, the majority of them civilians, according to the ministry, figures the UN considers reliable.

The war broke out after Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel in October 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

During that attack, Palestinian militants abducted 251 people, 58 of whom are still held hostage in Gaza, including 34 the military says are dead.

130 Settlers Storm Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound

20 Apr 2025

Extremist settlers stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque through the Mughrabi Gate on Sunday morning, under heavy guard from Israeli police.

The Islamic Endowments Department in occupied Quds reported that 130 settlers stormed Al-Aqsa and organized provocative tours of its courtyards.

It explained that the intruders performed Talmudic rituals and prayers in the eastern area of the mosque.

Zionist police imposed strict restrictions on the entry of worshippers entering the mosque, checking their IDs and detaining some at its outer gates.

Calls continue to intensify the security presence and mobilize the largest possible number of worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque to confront the settlers' plans and provocations.

Environmental Week highlights Saudi Arabia’s sustainability vision

GHADI JOUDAH

April 20, 2025

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture launched Saudi Environment Week on Sunday, themed “Our Environment is a Treasure,” to showcase the Kingdom’s efforts in ecosystem protection and sustainable development.

A highlight was the debut of the National Environmental Performance Index, a strategic tool to monitor environmental progress and guide policy.

The event, inaugurated by Minister Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli in Riyadh, brings together government agencies, businesses, nonprofits, and local communities to promote eco-friendly practices and collective responsibility.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Climate Envoy Adel Al-Jubeir also attended, with the event featuring environmental presentations, agreement signings, and children’s performances to encourage positive environmental behavior.

Activities include nationwide exhibitions, workshops on biodiversity and renewable energy, and forums for green innovations.

The new index, which Al-Fadhli described as essential for informed decision-making, will track environmental metrics like air quality, water conservation, and biodiversity.

It aims to align national development with ecological priorities, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to sustainable growth.

Al-Fadhli stressed the Kingdom’s leadership in sustainability, prioritizing natural resource protection and societal responsibility. He said that the index ensures accountability and progress as the country builds a greener future.

Al-Fadhli toured the exhibition, featuring sections on vegetation cover, desertification control, biodiversity, waste management, meteorology, and environmental compliance.

The exhibition also includes workshops highlighting Saudi Arabia’s role in fostering environmental cooperation, raising awareness, encouraging private sector investments in sustainable projects, and advancing technology.

The ministry emphasized that the newly introduced index serves as a nationwide monitoring tool, developed in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme.

It is designed to align with government bodies, environmental organizations, and national centers, ensuring cohesion with Saudi Arabia’s ecological priorities.

Key goals include evaluating environmental health, identifying change drivers, and establishing an early detection system for sustainability challenges and progress.

By tracking progress toward environmental targets, the ministry noted that the index identifies gaps for urgent action, enabling data-driven policy adjustments.

Phase 1 focuses on five core areas linked to the National Environment Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030: wildlife conservation, green space expansion, waste management efficiency, pollution levels in air, soil, and water, and weather forecasting accuracy.

Phase 2 will address emerging priorities, such as climate change metrics, reflecting their importance in long-term environmental planning.

The ministry stressed that the index will provide policymakers with actionable insights, driving improvements in ecological resilience, public health, and quality of life for Saudi citizens.

The National Fisheries Development Center has joined the celebrations of Saudi Environment Week.

Riyadh Al-Fageeh, director general of the center, said: “Our participation highlights the importance of preserving the environment, raising awareness, and strengthening quality of life goals. We aim to emphasize the role of institutions and individuals in maintaining ecological balance, aligned with Vision 2030.”

He added: “Saudi Environment Week reaffirms the Kingdom’s commitment to protecting natural resources and leading regional efforts in sustainability. We encourage all citizens and residents to actively participate and contribute to a cleaner, greener future.”

Calligraphy captivates Arabic speakers, non-speakers alike, say enthusiasts

HEBSHI ALSHAMMARI

April 20, 2025

RIYADH: Arabic calligraphy occupies a global artistic status that captivates Arabic speakers and non-speakers alike, enthusiasts have told Arab News.

The Ministry of Culture last week introduced two fonts based on Arabic calligraphy that are intended to be used by individuals and organizations in formal settings and for artistic works: Al-Awwal and Saudi.

Abdulrahman Al-Shahed, a founding member of the Saudi Arabic Calligraphy Association, told Arab News that the introduction of the fonts was “a welcome step that contributes to renewing the presence of Arabic calligraphy in digital and contemporary contexts, without separating it from its spiritual and aesthetic roots.”

He described the introduction of the fonts as “a call to rediscover calligraphy as a living identity.”

Arabic calligraphy “amazes viewers with its abstract beauty and contemplative spirit,” Al-Shahed said.

He noted that “many non-Arabs don’t read the letters, but they feel them and their beauty,” adding that Arabic calligraphy was consequently a universal visual language.

It has been evolving for more than 1,400 years, and each generation adds its own influence to the artform, expressing its own spirit and time, he said.

Abdul Adeem Al-Shali, a member of the Fine Arts Group in Qatif, told Arab News that “there is a growing interest among a large segment of non-Arabic speakers in the Arabic language and its letters and words.”

He added: “This interest demonstrates the magic of the Arabic letter and its appeal to the eye of the average recipient, let alone someone with artistic awareness.”

Many foreigners have masterfully drawn calligraphy. The American calligrapher Mohamed Zakariya, who converted to Islam and learned calligraphy in Istanbul, gained widespread fame, for example.

He held numerous calligraphy exhibitions in America and other Western countries, receiving praise from those interested in the art, said Al-Shali.

The arts enthusiast is optimistic about the future of Arabic calligraphy and urged those in charge of art colleges, calligraphy institutes, and Arabic language colleges at universities to “preserve this great heritage and teach it to current generations with great care.”

Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, the minister of culture, said that the new typefaces were a tribute to the Kingdom’s rich cultural and artistic heritage, his ministry adding that they were based on historic “inscriptions and Qur’anic manuscripts.”

The design of Al-Awwal highlights the spirit of calligraphy in ancient inscriptions in the Arabian Peninsula.

The Saudi takes into account the artistic principles of the Al-Awwal script and makes it more contemporary.

A group of local and international experts was responsible for their design, with support from the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property, the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives, and the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Global Center for Arabic Calligraphy Initiative.

Arabic calligraphy originated in the Arabian Peninsula and was influenced by the cultural and political conditions in the region and ancient rock art from pre-Islamic civilizations and languages. It spread with the migration of Arabs during the Islamic expansion.

The new typefaces “reflect the historical depth of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is considered the cradle of ancient human civilizations and the home of various calligraphy and inscriptions, ranging from Musnad, Nabataean, and Thamudic,” the Ministry of Culture said, referencing some of the ancient civilizations from the peninsula.

UAE slams settler groups' call to bomb Al Aqsa, violations committed against Christians in Jerusalem

April 20, 2025

The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned the extremist incitement by Israeli settler organisations calling for the destruction of Al Aqsa Mosque and Qubbat Al Sakhrah (Dome of the Rock).

The UAE has also strongly condemned the violations committed against Christians in Jerusalem during Holy Saturday, including obstructing access to churches and acts of physical aggression, and has warned against the dangerous repercussions of these arbitrary acts, which risk exacerbating tensions and escalation in the region.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) reiterated the UAE’s steadfast position on the importance of providing full protection of Islamic and Christian holy sites, and to halt the serious and provocative violations at Al Aqsa mosque.

Furthermore, the Ministry emphasised the need to respect the custodial role of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan over the holy sites in accordance with international law and historical status, and not to compromise the authority of the Jerusalem Endowment Administration that manages the affairs of Al-Aqsa Mosque, Qubbat Al Sakhrah, and the surrounding courtyards.

The Ministry also expressed the UAE's full solidarity and support for all measures implemented by Jordan to protect and preserve holy sites.

The Ministry held the Israeli authorities responsible for halting escalation and called for the implementation of efforts to avoid exacerbating tensions and instability in the region, affirming the UAE's categorical rejection of all practices that violate resolutions on international legitimacy and threaten further escalation.

The Ministry called on the international community to intensify all regional and international efforts to find a political horizon that achieves a comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, that fulfills the aspirations of the brotherly Palestinian people to establish an independent sovereign Palestinian state, in accordance with international law.

German state media shows Nazi insignia in Ukrainian boot camp for kids

20 Apr, 2025

German state broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) spotted a Nazi insignia while reporting from what it claimed to be a “secret military camp” for children in Ukraine.

A report about Ukrainian children “being trained for war in military-style boot camps” on Thursday featured children as young as ten learning to shoot military-grade weapons, provide first aid, and train in hand-to-hand combat.

“Ukrainians realize the war may continue for many years - and they want to be prepared. Today’s children may just be tomorrow’s soldiers,” DW reported.

One of the teenagers appears to be wearing a patch with a stylized Nazi German imperial eagle, which is briefly seen in the video on his shoulder. Unlike the original Reichsadler, who carried the swastika in its claws, the eagle in the patch appears to be clutching the trident from the Ukrainian coat of arms.

The original Reichsadler with the Nazi swastika is considered a symbol of an “unconstitutional organization” in Germany, and its display outside the contexts of “art or science, research or teaching” is illegal.

Versions of the symbol has been extremely popular among Ukrainian servicemen, and have repeatedly been spotted in official propaganda materials - only to be quietly removed after critics spot them.

Other controversial symbols, ranging from patches of various SS units, assorted neo-Pagan and neo-Nazi symbols to swastikas, have been repeatedly spotted on uniforms of Ukrainian servicemen as well.

The need to “denazify” Ukraine was among the goals proclaimed by Moscow at the very beginning of its special military operation against Kiev in February 2022.

Kiev has long denied the presence of any neo-Nazi elements in the country’s military, as well as any broader issues with the ideology in the country, dismissing any assertions on the matter as “Russian propaganda.”

'My cat was a viral star during Ramadan - now she needs life-saving surgery'

Harry Leach

21 Apr 2025

A fundraiser has been launched to save a 'viral' cat from being put down.

Two-year-old Meeno set social media alight last year when she gave birth to five kittens "randomly" during Ramadan.

The tabby cat's owner, Mansoor Shinwari, from Sparkbrook, initially thought his pet had only given birth to four.

But when a fifth popped out, taking her owner by complete surprise, the 29-year-old joked on X that it was "like transfer deadline day" and to "stop the count".

His light-hearted take on the situation was appreciated online - his posts racked up more than a million views on the social media app.

Four of the kittens were rehomed and Mansoor kept one of them.

But just a year on, their mum's life is hanging in the balance after Meeno broke her leg in a suspected fall.

Mansoor described it as a "serious break" and shared an X-ray image of the cat's broken body.

He said: "Because she was uninsured, the vets were charging prices like £6,000 for surgery and £3,000 to amputate [her leg].

"The only cheap option is £800 to put her down. Not doing that."

Mansoor, needing to make the cash quickly, has set up a GoFundMe page asking for help to cover the cost of surgery after he found a vet that would do it for £3,500.

"I would be grateful for any donations towards this," he said.

Samantha Teasdale

21 APR 2025

A Bradford mosque is urging people to come forward and 'work with police' after a suspected attempted murder in a car park.

Prison staff to demand electric stun guns in jails

21 APR 2025

Prison officers are to demand that staff be immediately given electric stun guns to protect themselves while guarding the UK's most dangerous jails when they meet the justice secretary on Wednesday.

The meeting with Shabana Mahmood comes after Hashem Abedi, one of the men responsible for the Manchester Arena bombing, threw hot oil at officers and stabbed them with makeshift weapons at HMP Frankland in County Durham.

Mark Fairhurst, national chair of the Prison Officers' Association (POA), told the BBC that they are "calling for the tactical use of taser".

In a statement, Mahmood said "we must do to better protect our prison officers in the future".

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Mr Fairhurst said: "My concerns are that when we face life threatening situations, we no longer have tactical options.

"If extendible batons and incapacitant spray fail to work adequately, we have no other options available."

"That's why we are calling for the tactical use of taser. We want specially trained staff on site who respond to incidents with the ability to deploy taser to neutralise that threat.

"At the moment we haven't got that."

Prison officers currently only carry an extendable baton and Pava incapacitant spray - synthetic pepper spray.

The POA will also renew calls for all staff to have stab vests.

Mr Fairhurst has also called for American "Supermax"-style rules imposed on the UK's most dangerous inmates.

This would mean selected high-risk inmates would leave their cell only when handcuffed and escorted by three staff, he told the Guardian newspaper.

There would also would be no mixing with other prisoners, and they would be restricted to their basic entitlement of rights and privileges.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has said there will be a full, independent review into the incident, which has drawn criticism from survivors and the families of victims of the Manchester Arena bombing.

Security measures at the separation centre did allow prisoners access to kitchens - where Abedi carried out his attack - but this was suspended by MoJ following the incident.

Mahmood said the review would "provide recommendations and findings that highlight whether there are any changes in process or policies that can be implemented at HMP Frankland and more broadly across the High Security Estate".

An internal review into protective body armour will be also carried out, she said.

There was no mention of electric stun guns in the statement.

Abedi, who helped his older brother Salman plan the Manchester Arena bombing, was jailed for life with a minimum 55 years in prison after being convicted of murdering 22 people.

He had been held in a separation centre - which holds a small number of inmates deemed to be dangerous and extremist - at Frankland.

He moved to Frankland after carrying out an earlier attack on prison officers in Belmarsh prison in 2020, for which three years and 10 months was added to his sentence.

Abedi has since been moved to London's high-security Belmarsh prison.

Ukraine reports many Russian drone attacks after truce ends

21 APR 2025

Ukraine's military has reported Russian drone attacks on several regions overnight, just hours after the end of a 30-hour "Easter truce" declared by Moscow.

Ukraine's air force issued raid alerts for the Kyiv region, as well as Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, Mykolaiv and Zaporizhzhia.

In the southern city of Mykolaiv, Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych said "explosions were heard". It was not immediately clear whether there were any casualties.

Russia's military has not commented on the reported attacks. The truce declared by President Vladimir Putin expired at midnight on Sunday Moscow time (21:00 GMT). Both sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire.

Early on Monday residents in several Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv, were urged by local authorities to go immediately to nearby shelters due to the threat of drone strikes.

In the Kyiv region, local officials said air defence forces were "working on targets".

Ukraine's air force also reported a "rocket danger" for central regions, and said Russian aircraft were "active in the north-eastern and eastern directions".

In Mykolaiv, regional head Vitaliy Kim said shortly afterwards that the city had been attacked by missiles. "There were no casualties or damage," he added.

Several hours before the truce expired, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin had not given an order to extend it, Russia's state-run news agency Tass reported.

The BBC has not independently verified the claims by Ukraine and Russia.

US President Donald Trump - who has been pushing for an end to the war - said late on Sunday that "hopefully Russia and Ukraine will make a deal this week". He gave no further details.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, and currently controls about 20% Ukraine's territory, including the southern Crimea peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014.

It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people - the vast majority of them soldiers - have been killed or injured on all sides since 2022.

Last month, Moscow came up with a long list of conditions in response to a full and unconditional ceasefire that had been agreed by the US and Ukraine.

On Saturday, President Putin said there would be an end to all hostilities from 18:00 Moscow time (15:00 GMT) on Saturday until midnight on Sunday. Kyiv said it would also adhere.

"For this period, I order all military actions to cease," Putin said in his announcement.

"We assume that the Ukrainian side will follow our example. At the same time, our troops must be ready to repel possible violations of the truce and provocations from the enemy, any of its aggressive actions."

However, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said late on Sunday there had been a total of 1,882 cases of Russian shelling, 812 of which involved heavy weaponry, according to a report from Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi.

The president said the heaviest shelling and assaults were in eastern Ukraine near the besieged city of Pokrovsk, a key logistics hub in the Donetsk region.

"The nature of Ukrainian actions will continue to be mirrored: we will respond to silence with silence, our strikes will be to protect against Russian strikes," Zelensky said.

Earlier on Sunday, he said "there were no air raid alerts today", referring to Russia's daily drone and missile strikes against Ukraine.

He proposed "to cease any strikes using long-range drones and missiles on civilian infrastructure for a period of at least 30 days, with the possibility of extension".

Zelensky also said Putin's declaration of a truce amounted to a "PR" exercise and his words were "empty". He accused the Kremlin of trying to create "a general impression of a ceasefire".

"This Easter has clearly demonstrated that the only source of this war, and the reason it drags on, is Russia," the president said.

The Russian defence ministry insisted its troops had "strictly observed the ceasefire".

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Ukraine of using US-supplied Himars missiles during the ceasefire.

The surprise ceasefire announcement came shortly after Trump threatened to "take a pass" on brokering further Russia-Ukraine peace talks.

However, a state department spokesperson said on Sunday Washington remained "committed to achieving a full and comprehensive ceasefire".

"It is long past time to stop the death and destruction and end this war," the spokesperson added.

RAF jets intercept Russian aircraft near Nato airspace

21 APR 2025

Two Russian aircraft flying close to Nato airspace were detected by British fighter jets in separate incidents earlier this week, the UK's Ministry of Defence has said.

A pair of RAF Typhoons were scrambled to intercept a Russian Ilyushin Il-20M "Coot-A" intelligence aircraft over the Baltic Sea on 15 April, while another two Typhoons intercepted an unknown aircraft leaving the Kaliningrad airspace on 17 April.

The two intercepts, which took off from Malbork Air Base in Poland, were part of the UK's contribution to Nato's enhanced air policing.

They were the RAF's first intercepts since aircraft arrived in the region to begin the defence of Nato's eastern flank, working alongside Sweden.

The UK's involvement in Nato's enhanced air policing is called Operation Chessman and sees personnel from across the RAF deployed to Malbork alongside Sweden, Nato's newest member.

The undertaking follows Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's commitment to increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP.

Minister for the Armed Forces Luke Pollard said that the UK was "unshakable" in its commitment to Nato.

"With Russian aggression growing and security threats on the rise, we are stepping up to reassure our Allies, deter adversaries and protect our national security through our Plan for Change," he said.

Mr Pollard added that the "mission shows our ability to operate side by side with NATO's newest member Sweden and to defend the Alliance's airspace wherever and whenever needed, keeping us safe at home and strong abroad".

Scrambling RAF jets not uncommon

This is not the first time RAF jets have been used to intercept Russian aircraft.

Last year, two Typhoons based at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland were scrambled after a Russian Bear-F bomber flew over the North Sea.

At the time, the MoD said the Russian reconnaissance plane had been detected in the UK's "area of interest", but had not been able to enter UK sovereign airspace.

Fifty Russian aircraft were also intercepted by RAF pilots based at Lossiemouth in 2023, when 21 aircraft were intercepted in a 21-day period.

In a separate incident in 2023, Typhoon fighters and a Norwegian F-35A fighter aircraft were launched as part of Nato's response to a Russian aircraft near Uk airspace.

Incidents like this - known as quick reaction alerts - are not uncommon and involve RAF crews shadowing Russian military aircraft near UK airspace and during operations further afield, if necessary. They have occurred since the Cold War era.

Intercepts are not just used to track Russian aircraft, though. In October 2024, RAF fighters were scrambled to intercept a civilian airliner which had reported a bomb on board.

Afterwards, an RAF spokesman said the alert ended without incident, and the Boeing 777-300 "was released to continue to its original destination".

Could an almighty eruption destroy a dreamy Greek island?

21 APR 2025

Perched on top of Santorini's sheer cliffs is a world-famous tourist industry worth millions. Underneath is the fizzing risk of an almighty explosion.

A huge ancient eruption created the dreamy Greek island, leaving a vast crater and a horse-shoe shaped rim.

Now scientists are investigating for the first time how dangerous the next big one could be.

BBC News spent a day on board the British royal research ship the Discovery as they searched for clues.

Just weeks before, nearly half of Santorini's 11,000 residents had fled for safety when the island shut down in a series of earthquakes.

It was a harsh reminder that under the idyllic white villages dotted with gyros restaurants, hot tubs in AirBnB rentals, and vineyards on rich volcanic soil, two tectonic plates grind in the Earth's crust.

Prof Isobel Yeo, an expert on highly dangerous submarine volcanoes with Britain's National Oceanography Centre, is leading the mission. Around two-thirds of the world's volcanoes are underwater, but they are hardly monitored.

"It's a bit like 'out of sight, out of mind' in terms of understanding their danger, compared to more famous ones like Vesuvius," she says on deck, as we watch two engineers winching a robot the size of a car off the ship's side.

This work, coming so soon after the earthquakes, will help scientists understand what type of seismic unrest could indicate a volcanic eruption is imminent.

Santorini's last eruption was in 1950, but as recently as 2012 there was a "period of unrest", says Isobel. Magma flowed into the volcanoes' chambers and the islands "swelled up".

"Underwater volcanoes are capable of really big, really destructive eruptions," she says.

"We are lulled into a sense of false security if you're used to small eruptions and the volcano acting safe. You assume the next will be the same - but it might not," she says.

The Hunga Tunga eruption in 2022 in the Pacific produced the largest underwater explosion ever recorded, and created a tsunami in the Atlantic with shockwaves felt in the UK. Some islands in Tonga, near the volcano, were so devastated that their people have never returned.

Beneath our feet on the ship, 300m (984ft) down, are bubbling hot vents. These cracks in the Earth turn the seafloor into a bright orange world of protruding rocks and gas clouds.

"We know more about the surface of some planets than what's down there," Isobel says.

The robot descends to the seabed to collect fluids, gases and snap off chunks of rock.

Those vents are hydrothermal, meaning hot water pours out from cracks, and they often form near volcanoes.

They are why Isobel and 22 scientists from around the world are on this ship for a month.

So far, no-one has been able to work out if a volcano becomes more or less explosive when sea water in these vents mixes with magma.

"We are trying to map the hydrothermal system," Isobel explains. It's not like making a map on land. "We have to look inside the earth," she says.

The Discovery is investigating Santorini's caldera and sailing out to Kolombo, the other major volcano in this area, about 7km (4.3 miles) north-east of the island.

The two volcanoes are not expected to erupt imminently, but it is only a matter of time.

The expedition will create data sets and geohazard maps for Greece's Civil Protection Agency, explains Prof Paraskevi Nomikou, a member of the government emergency group that met daily during the earthquake crisis.

She is from Santorini, and grew up hearing about past earthquakes and eruptions from her grandfather. The volcano inspired her to become a geologist.

"This research is very important because it will inform local people how active the volcanoes are, and it will map the area that will be forbidden to access during an eruption," she says.

It will reveal which parts of the Santorini sea floor are the most hazardous, she adds.

These missions are incredibly expensive, so Isobel crams in experiments night and day as the scientists work in 12-hour shifts.

John Jamieson, a professor at Canada's Memorial University in Newfoundland, shows us volcanic rocks extracted from the vents.

"Don't pick that one up," he warns. "It's full of arsenic."

Pointing to another that looks like a black and orange meringue with gold dusting, he explains: "This is a real mystery - we don't even know what it is made of."

These rocks tell the history of the fluid, temperature and material inside the volcano. "This is a geological environment different to most others - it's really exciting," he says.

But the mission's beating heart is a dark shipping container on deck where four people stare at screens mounted on a wall.

Using a joystick that wouldn't look out of a place on a gaming console, two engineers drive the underwater robot. Isobel and Paraskevi trade theories about what is in a pool of fluid that the robot has found.

They have recorded very small earthquakes around the volcano, caused by fluid moving through the system and causing fractures. Isobel plays us an audio recording of the fractures reverberating. It sounds like the bass in a nightclub being amped up and down.

They identify how fluid moves through rocks by pulsing an electromagnetic field into the earth.

This is creating a 3D map that shows how the hydrothermal system is connected to the volcano's magma chamber where an eruption is generated.

"We are doing science for the people, not science for the scientists. We are here to make people feel safe," Paraskevi says.

The recent earthquake crisis in Santorini highlighted how exposed the island's residents are to the seismic threats and how reliant they are on tourism.

Back on dry land, photographer Eva Rendl meets me in her favourite location for wedding shoots. When the so-called swarm of earthquakes hit in February, she left the island with her daughter.

"It was really scary, as it got more and more intense," she says.

She's back now but business is slower. "People have cancelled bookings. Normally I start shoots in April but my first job isn't until May," Eva says.

In the main square of Santorini's upmarket town Oia, British-Canadian tourist Janet tells us six of her group of 10 cancelled their holiday.

She believes more accurate scientific information about the likelihood of earthquakes and volcanoes would help others feel more reassured about visiting.

"I get the Google alerts, I get the scientists' alerts, and it helps me feel safe," she said.

But Santorini will always be a dream destination. In Imerovigli, we see two people climbing onto the curved rooftops to get the perfect shot.

The couple - married for just 15 minutes - travelled from Latvia and were not put off by the island's underwater risks.

"Actually we wanted to get married by a volcano," Tom says, his bride Kristina by his side.
