By KHAAMA PRESS - Thu Oct 01 2015

Afghan National Security Forces have defeated Taliban in Khwaja Ghar District of northeastern Takhar province.

Senior Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs General Mohammad Ayoub Salangi said in a tweet this afternoon that terrorists suffered heavy casualties in this district.

“#AFG #Khwajaghar district of Takhar province been cleared from terrorists by #ANSF, heavy casualties to the enemy.” A post on General Salangi’s twitter account stated.

Earlier in the day, a member of Takhar’s provincial council reported that Taliban who fled Dasht-e-Archi District of Kundoz province attacked Khwaja Ghar District.

Security forces in full control of Imam Saheb District of Kundoz

By KHAAMA PRESS - Thu Oct 01 2015

Afghan National Security Forces have gained full control of the Imam Saheb District of northern Kundoz province, speaker of the parliament said on Thursday.

Abdul Rawouf Ibrahimi said that the district came under the government control after a military operation.

Ibrahimi further said that when security forces stepped back in this district, its residents begun to escape.

He added that some of them including children and women took boats to reach to a jungle alongside  Amu River.

Ibahimi urged President to keep on the military operation launched in Kundoz until the elimination Taliban from the entire province.

Kundoz being a key town in the northern part of the country is considered strategic. Analyzers believe if Taliban establish stronghold in this district, they can also pose threat to other neighboring northern and northeastern areas.

Thu Oct 01 2015

Mohammad Omar Saif, the governor of Kundoz province has returned to Kabul and rejected all allegations.

Radio Azadi reported on Thursday that Safi talked to them on Wednesday saying that his trip was approved by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in advance.

Kundoz city was under Taliban control for three days but ministries of interior and defense said this morning that Afghan security forces have regained control of the city.

Omar Safi did not talk to media about his whereabouts for at least two days when people in his province were dying. Now that Taliban are on the run, he all sudden appears in the media saying that he will defend Afghanistan until ‘the last drop of his blood’.

Previous reports published on media suggested that he had fled the country to Europe. But Safi told Radio Azadi that it is not the reality.

“Unfortunately, Afghan people and politicians don’t follow reality. And they just say irresponsible things in the media that could be very dangerous. The enemy can benefit from this.” Safi is quoted by Azadi Radio as saying.

He said that he had left the provincial capital in the charge of his deputy and the police brigade commander.

Safi’s comments come as President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has appointed Hamdullah Daneshi as the acting governor for Kundoz.

Full Text: India’s reply to Pakistan at the United Nation General Assembly

October 1, 2015

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif accused India of fomenting instability in his country and proposed a four-point “new peace initiative” including demilitarizing Kashmir and Siachen, and formalizing the 2003 ceasefire, describing these as the “simplest” measures to implement towards peace between the two countries. (Source: AP file photo)

Statement by First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations exercising India’s Right of Reply during the General Debate of 70th session of UN General Assembly

Mr. President,

It is regrettable that the delegation of Pakistan has once again chosen to misuse the High Level Segment of the UN General Assembly Session to distort reality and portray a false picture of the challenges in our region.

Pakistan claims to be the primary victim of terrorism. In truth, it is actually a victim of its own policies of breeding and sponsoring terrorists. Seeking to mask its activities as though an outcome of domestic discontent in the Indian State of Jammu & Kashmir carries no credibility with the world.

Mr. President,

It was stated that Jammu and Kashmir is under foreign occupation. It is, except that the occupier in question is Pakistan. In fact, India’s reservations about the proposed China-Pakistan Economic Corridor stem from the fact that it passes through Indian territory illegally occupied by Pakistan for many years.

Pakistan apparently regrets that the dispute over Jammu and Kashmir remains unresolved and that our dialogue has not progressed. If it is so, this is because Pakistan has chosen to disregard its commitments, whether it was under the 1972 Simla Agreement, the 2004 Joint Declaration forswearing terrorism, or more recently, the understanding between our two Prime Ministers at Ufa. On each occasion, it is India that has extended the hand of friendship. India remains open even today to engage Pakistan on outstanding issues in an atmosphere free of terrorism and violence.

Mr. President,

Reference was made to ceasefire violations and exchanges of fire along the Line of Control and the International Boundary. The world knows that the primary reason for firing is to provide cover to terrorists crossing the border. It needs no imagination to figure out which side initiates this exchange.

It is not uncommon for states, when confronted with serious challenges, to shift responsibility on others. That is the case with Pakistan and terrorism, reflecting the inability to recognize that this is a home grown problem that has begun to bite the hand that fed it. We agree that terrorism has underlying causes – in this case, poverty of wisdom and ignorance of consequences.

Mr. President,

The heart of the matter is a state that regards the use of terrorism as a legitimate instrument of statecraft. The world watches with concern as its consequences have spread beyond its immediate neighbourhood. All of us stand prepared to help, if only the creators of this monster wake up to the dangers of what they have done to themselves.

I Was Nationalist, Then Communist, but Babri and Riots Changed Me: IM Operative

Written by Praveen Swami | New Delhi

Sadiq Israr Sheikh, who has told police he carried out the 7/11 Mumbai train bombings along with four others, claims to have had a change of heart soon after the attack. “I began reading stories in newspapers about the victims,” Sheikh, then 34, told his interrogators on September 18, 2009. “In fact I’ll say that I credit the newspaper Indian Express for changing my thinking. The Indian Express played a crucial role in changing my outlook. Daily the paper carried a story of a victim which really influenced me. I came to the conclusion that what I am doing was wrong.

That my path was wrong and I shouldn’t be involved in these activities. I decided from then on not to get involved in any more of such activities. READ | Unraveling the truth behind 7/11 Mumbai train blasts probe “There were stories of people who had just one son, or just one earning person to depend on, and people with kids. I put myself in their place: how would I have felt if this had happened to me. I was married and had a daughter by then, you see, and I understood what it meant… The reality is my thinking changed completely.” In his custodial questioning, whose video is available with The Indian Express (www.indianexpress.com), Sheikh also talks about what set him down the road of terrorism, particularly the role played by the Babri Masjid demolition. Sheikh was born in 1975. His parents, who were small farmers owning just five bighas of land in Azamgarh, had moved to Mumbai, to a slum in Chembur, hoping to build a new life. Two years before his birth, the slum was relocated to Cheeta Camp, a new project that was built to make way for the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. There, his father ran a small store. In his 2009 interrogation, Sheikh says, “Before the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition, my mentality (inclination) was towards Communism, I was Communist-minded. Before that I was nationalist minded because the locality in Bombay where I lived was a defence services area — Army, Navy… After the Babri Masjid demolition and riots, my mentality changed and I turned towards my religion. And because I was upset, in 1996, I joined SIMI.” Sheikh, who says he was in SIMI from 1996 to 1999 (it was banned for the first time in 2001), also claims to have been attracted to it because he was “very aggressive”. “I used to pick fights, both at home and outside, which bothered my parents. So I thought I should get into the company of good people.” In SIMI, Sheikh says, “the pain that had taken root in my heart after the Babri Masjid episode got nurtured”.

At the same time, he clarifies, “I saw some people from SIMI and realised they were good people — Shafiq, Salim. These two were from the Cheeta Camp. I noticed they were of a religious bent, were educated and did jobs. I could have also joined the Jamat but those people become complete ‘mullahs’ — they are then not concerned about the world. I joined SIMI so that I stay religious and change to become better.” While Sheikh failed to clear high school, life did seem to be headed the right way.

He did a course in refrigeration, air-conditioning from an institute in Dongri, Mumbai, and in 2000, got an apprenticeship with Godrej as a refrigeration technician, and was later hired as full-time worker. Early in 2001, investigators have found, the Godrej plant moved to Mohali in Punjab, and Sheikh found himself jobless. In those months, his family received a visit from a Hyderabad-based relative, Mujahid Salim Azmi, the son of a prominent cleric. The two men shared anger against “oppression of Muslims in India”, and the belief that jihad was the way forward. Mujahid Salim is believed to have introduced Sheikh to Asif Raza Khan, a ganglord then in the process of setting up what would flower into the Indian Mujahideen several years later.

In February 2001, Sheikh told police, he flew from Dhaka to Karachi, armed with fake travel documents. He said he received training at the Lashkar-e-Toiba’s Umm-ul-Qura camp near Muzaffarabad, in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, and then took an advanced course at a camp in Bahawalpur. In 2002, according to Sheikh’s testimony, he participated in his first terrorist action — an attack on the US consulate in Kolkata, carried out to avenge the killing of Asif Raza Khan in a shootout with police. Later that year, Amir Raza Khan, the brother of Asif Raza Khan, allegedly offered him a job in Dubai. His co-workers included Riyaz Shahbandri or Riyaz Bhatkal, a man he knew from the SIMI meetings he attended in 1996, who would soon become his boss.

Back in India in 2004, Sheikh was reportedly put to work building the network that grew into the IM. From September 2004, the group allegedly began carrying out its campaign: a bombing in Varanasi, followed by a strike on the Shramjeevi Express, and then serial bombings in New Delhi. His remorse in the aftermath of the Mumbai bombings, as Sheikh says in his videotaped testimony, caused him to drop out of the network. He was arrested in September 2008 in Mumbai, more than two years after the 7/11 bombings, while on his way to work.

Germany's Radical Right Mobilizes Against Refugees

30 September 2015

According to the spy chief, the country had witnessed a "radicalization" and "a greater willingness to use violence" by all extremist groups.

BERLIN – As the influx of migrants and refugees continues, Germany’s spy chief has warned of a radicalization of right-wing groups, amid renewed xenophobic rallies and clashes in Europe's largest economy.

"What we're seeing in connection with the refugee crisis is a mobilization on the street of right-wing extremists, but also of some left-wing extremists who oppose them," Domestic spy chief Hans-Georg Maassen told Deutschlandfunk public radio, Agence France Presse (AFP) on Sunday, September 27.

Muslim Students Discriminatory Discs Spark Ire

30 September 2015 00:00

Eighteen of the school’s 1,500 pupils were made to wear the discs.

CAIRO – A French school is under investigation after Muslim and Jewish pupils were told to wear red discs around their necks at lunchtime, sparking parents' outrage.

“It’s revolting. It reminds you of the darkest times,” a local councillor, Malika Ounès, told The Telegraph.

“Practices like this are not acceptable. No one has the right to impose this on children.”

The dilemma started when Piedalloues primary school in Auxerre, in Burgundy, gave red discs to non-pork eating pupils, basically Muslims.

Eighteen of the school’s 1,500 pupils were made to wear the discs.

Russia denies US criticism, says warplanes hit IS fighters

Paris |Oct 01, 2015

Russia on Thursday insisted its warplanes in Syria were hitting at the same terrorists targeted by the United States and contradicted American criticism that its military failed to coordinate the airstrikes, describing the allegations as a “war of disinformation.”

Alexander Orlov, the Russian ambassador to France, said Moscow’s intervention came only after a year of airstrikes by the US and its partners failed to dislodge Islamic State extremists, and predicted that Syria could be ready for “free elections” within a year.

The Russian Defence Ministry said its warplanes on Wednesday targeted and destroyed eight positions belonging to extremists from the IS group, also known as ISIL or ISIS, in what President Vladimir Putin called a pre-emptive strike against the militants.

The ministry gave no specific locations, but Orlov said the targets were installations for Islamic State and the al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria. Orlov told France Info radio the planes were acting as air support for Syrian ground troops.

The US and Russia agree on the need to fight the Islamic State but not about what to do with President Bashar Assad.

Pak PM urges India to pledge not to use force under any circumstances

ANWAR IQBAL | MASOOD HAIDER — 01 10 15

NEW YORK: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif urged India on Wednesday to pledge with Pakistan not to use force or the threat of force under any circumstances.

The prime minister used his address to the UN General Assembly to propose four peace measures, which include demilitarising of Kashmir and an unconditional withdrawal of troops from Siachen.

“Our peoples need peace to prosper. Peace can be achieved through dialogue, not disengagement,” he said.

Mr Sharif said the steps he was suggesting in this “new peace initiative” were “the simplest to implement”:

“One, Pakistan and India formalise and respect the 2003 understanding for a complete ceasefire on the Line of Control in Kashmir.”

For this purpose, he called for the expansion of the UN Military Observers Group for India and Pakistan to monitor the observance of the ceasefire.

Shuja Khanzada murder: Four suspects killed in CTD 'encounter'

IMRAN GABOL - Thu Oct 01 2015

LAHORE: Four people suspected of involvement in the suicide attack on slain Punjab home minister Colonel (retd) Shuja Khanzada were killed in an 'encounter' early on Thursday.

The suspects identified as Qasim, Amjad, Saddam and Sadaqat were killed in an exchange of fire with Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Sheikhupura personnel, sources say.

The CTD conducted an intelligence-based raid on a house in Iqbal Town Division's Sherakot area on the outskirts of Lahore.

The CTD received "secret information" regarding the presence of 7-8 terrorists within the limits of Sherakot police station, the Punjab CTD spokesman said, adding, "They were planning to launch a big attack on officials of law enforcement agencies in the late morning," he said.

The spokesman said the CTD officials went to arrest them. "The officials challenged them and told them to surrender. Instead of laying down arms, the terrorists started firing at the police party. The police fired in self defence. After some time, the firing stopped. Four terrorists were found dead, killed by firing of their own accomplices," he said.

The spokesman confirmed that around 3-4 suspects had "fled from the scene, taking benefit of darkness".

Historic Moment as Palestinian Flag Raised Outside UN

September 30, 2015

More than 300 ministers, diplomats and well-wishers crowded into the rose garden at UN headquarters Wednesday where a temporary flagpole had been erected for the ceremony.

The Palestinians campaigned for a General Assembly resolution that was overwhelmingly approved on Sept. 10 allowing UN observer states to fly their flags alongside those of the 193 UN member states. The Holy See and Palestine and are the only two UN observer states.

Abbas told the crowd it was a "historical moment" on the Palestinian road to independence and said "the dawn is coming" when the state of Palestine will be free. He declared that in the future Sept. 30 will be "the day of the Palestinian flag."

He then raised the black, white, green and red flag among cheers and shouts of "Peace! Peace! Palestine."

By Reuters | Ankara

Thursday, 1 October 2015

Two Turkish soldiers were gunned down by suspected Kurdish militants as they left for work on Thursday in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir, security sources said.

More than 100 security personnel and hundreds of militants have been killed since the collapse of a ceasefire with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party in July. The renewed hostilities have left efforts to establish a long-term peace in ruins, and have sparked some of the worst recent clashes in a three decades-long insurgency.

The soldiers were killed in the town of Silvan, where security forces are trying to track down the assailants, the sources told Reuters.

Source Rejects Reports on Seizure of Iranian Ship Carrying Weapons in Sea of Oman

Thursday 1 October 2015

TEHRAN (FNA)- An informed source at the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday rejected as baseless the recent allegations by the western media about the seizure of an Iranian fishing boat in the Sea of Oman carrying weapons by the Saudi-led forces.

"These rumors are spread for the purpose of psychological warfare," the source, speaking on condition of anonymity said.

The source reiterated that such allegations are "untrue media fabrication and psychological warfare".

He reiterated that the Yemeni people do not need Iran's weapons to fight the aggressors, and said, "It is clear that such fabrications and accusations are baseless and the coalition forces have resorted to a threadbare and repeatedly-used scenario after the recent Mina fiasco."

The source did not deny that an Iranian fishing dhow has been captured, but stressed that the report about its cargo are totally false and baseless.

He said Iran is pursuing the case with the vessel, and added, "The baseless allegations about the cargo of the fishing dhow and the propaganda launched by the media affiliated to the (Saudi-led) coalition are aimed at projecting the blame and do not at all justify the magnitude of the coalition forces' ceaseless crimes and attacks on the Yemeni people and the destruction of the infrastructures of this Muslim country," the source added.

The source's remarks came after the western media, including the Wall Street Journal, on Wednesday quoted the Saudi-led forces as claiming that they had stopped "a boat carrying 14 Iranians and laden with missile launchers and anti-tank weapons".

However, the US Navy said later in the day that the ship "was not registered with any country".

The American description of the ship's seizure in the Northern Arabian Sea conflicted in some instances with an earlier account provided by a separate Saudi-led coalition which claimed it had foiled the smuggling attempt.

The US Navy's 5th Fleet, based in Bahrain, said a member of the Combined Maritime Forces, a longstanding multinational coalition, intercepted the vessel in international waters last Friday.

An American guided missile destroyer, the USS Forrest Sherman, arrived to assist once the weapons were found aboard the dhow, a type of vessel commonly used in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean, the US Navy added.

But according to the WSJ report, the Saudi Arabia-led military coalition claimed that the ship "was seized around 1pm local time Saturday, Sept. 26 in the Arabian Sea, about 150 miles southeast of the Omani port of Salalah. Oman shares a border with Yemen".

The coalition said the boat is registered under the name Jan Mohammed Hut, an Iranian citizen. The vessel had a license from Iranian authorities to fish in those waters, the coalition said, while the American description said the ship "was not registered with any country".

HOTAN – Chinese authorities have banned many Muslim names in China's northwestern district of Xinjiang and threatened to bar students with such names from attending schools, in the latest crack down on Uighurs’ religious rights.

“The police explained to us that a name such as Muslime was officially forbidden. Under such circumstances, we were forced to change our daughter’s name.”

Trump says would send home Syrian refugees if elected US Prez

Washington |Oct 01, 2015

Republican US presidential front-runner Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would send thousands of Syrian refugees back to their home country if he is elected in November.

Trump’s remarks to CNN television came the same day Russian warplanes began air raids in Syria’s centre and north -- their first military engagement outside the former Soviet Union since the occupation of Afghanistan in 1979.

“Look, if Russia wants to go in there, would have been nice if we went in as a unified front, to be honest. But if Russia wants to go in there and knock out ISIS and maybe stabilizes, this big migration with 200,000 people into the United States...” Trump said.

“If I win, I’m going to say it right now and I’ll say it to you, those 200,000 people -- they have to know this and the world will hear it -- are going back.

Ten parents showed up and wanted to be heard, but Walton county school superintendent Gary Hobbs only met with one parent who had a scheduled meeting.

"We knew they were not going to be able to solve our problems about these Islamic assignments on a local level. Our issue is with the state which forces our teachers to religiously profile our children," parent Ryan Breece said.

Islamaphobia is the Problem, Not Islam

September 30, 2015 By Griffin Guinta

By Nikki Pappas

Imagine you’re a crafty high school freshman boy spending your weekend constructing a project to impress your science teacher. In class, you eagerly wriggle in your seat, waiting to show your teacher and friends. Something is amiss; your teacher is convinced the makeshift clock you constructed is an explosive device. The clinking of metal is heard down the hallway and the next thing you know you are taken out in handcuffs and levied a three-day suspension.

This is exactly what happened to young Ahmed Muhammad Sept. 21 at MacArthur High School in Dallas, Texas. Muhammad comes from Muslim heritage and has been featured throughout the media as a target of racial profiling and religious bigotry sparked by the fear of Muslims, otherwise known as “Islamophobia.” Islamophobia is becoming an increasing problem in our nation, causing adherents to the Muslim faith to be targeted and discriminated against by media outlets, the government and the rest of society.

Rwanda: From hatred to reconciliation

29 Sep 2015

Newspapers weren't sold. They were given away free to people who couldn’t afford to buy them. They'd give the papers to a militia group in a village to distribute.

Sam Judy Chmimana, Journalist

Between April and July 1994, more than 800,000 men, women and children, mostly from Rwanda's Tutsi minority were slaughtered.

In one of the worst atrocities in recent history, Hutu paramilitaries unleashed a bloodbath, killing every person they could find, as neighbours murdered neighbours.

Sparked by the death of President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, when his plane was shot down above Kigali airport on 6 April 1994, Hutu extremists seized on his death to exterminate the Tutsi community.

In Rwanda: From hatred to reconciliation , we explore the genocide through the prism of the media, exploring their role - both then and now.

This film explores how the country's earliest print journals, followed by newspapers and radio, all played a major part in reinforcing prejudices, inciting racial hatred and fanning the flames of violence.
