Mohalla, a locality in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, was abuzz with
unprecedented activities this November, with kilns running throughout the day.
Noor Muhammad Kumar, 54, a potter, roped in his two brothers and neighbours to
meet orders for 10,000 earthen lamps from outside the State, for Deepavali. “It
has been a busy month. The only time we would take breaks was during daily
namaz,” he said.
Kashmir
Valley has a minuscule Hindu population. However, with the growing number of
jawans, migrant labourers, and Hindu families celebrating Deepavali in Kashmir
this year, scores of temples, renovated across the Valley in the past four
years, are set for special prayers on the occasion.

Arab
and Muslim countries issue strongly worded statement calling for cease-fire in
Gaza and return to Middle East peace talks
12
NOVEMBER 2023
At
the end of a rare joint summit, in the Saudi Capital, Riyadh, leaders of Arab
and Muslim countries issued a strongly worded joint statement on Saturday (11
November) condemning Israel for its war in Gaza, calling for an immediate end
to hostilities, and the launch of efforts towards a lasting peace in the region
based on a two-state solution.
In
their statement, the Arab and Muslim leaders said: "a just, lasting and
comprehensive peace, which is a strategic option, is the only way to establish
security and stability for all peoples of the region and protect them from
cycles of violence and wars. This, we stress, will not be achieved without
ending the Israeli occupation and resolving the Palestinian cause on the basis
of the two-state solution. We affirm that it is impossible to achieve regional
peace while overlooking the Palestinian cause or attempting to ignore the
rights of the Palestinian people. We stress that the Arab Peace Initiative,
backed by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, is an essential reference to
this end."
We
hold Israel, the occupying force, responsible for the continuation and aggravation
of the conflict, which is the result of its violation of the rights of the
Palestinian people, and of the Islamic and Christian sanctities. This is also
the result of its systematic aggressive policies and practices, its illegal
unilateral steps that perpetuate the occupation, violate international law, and
prevent the realization of a just and comprehensive peace. We affirm that
Israel, and all countries of the region, will not enjoy security and peace
unless the Palestinians enjoy theirs and regain all their stolen rights. We
stress that the continuation of the Israeli occupation is a threat to the
security and stability of the region and to international security and peace.
We
condemn all forms of hatred and discrimination, and all acts that perpetuate
hatred and extremism. We warn of the disastrous repercussions of the
retaliatory aggression by Israel against the Gaza Strip, which amounts to a war
crime, and the barbaric crimes committed also in the West Bank and Al-Quds
Al-Sharif.
In
their statement, the leaders announced
they were assigning the Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,
in its capacity as the presidency of the 32nd Arab and Islamic Summit, along
with counterparts from Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Palestine,
and any other interested countries, and the Secretary-General of both
organisations to initiate immediate international action on behalf of all
member states of the OIC and the Arab League to formulate an international move
to halt the war in Gaza and to pressure for a real and serious political
process to achieve permanent and comprehensive peace in accordance with
established international references.

Jews and Christians unite in York for peace in Israel and Gaza

Cottrell speak before the Vigil for Peace in York Minster (Image: Newsquest)
------------
York
Minster echoed to the sound of the Koran and Jewish holy scripture as it hosted
a Vigil for Peace in Israel and Gaza.
So
many people of all ages, backgrounds, faiths and no faith attended the event,
they filled the central aisle and much of the side aisles of the nave.
Many
of the 1,100 attendees brought their children including tiny babies. All sat
silently to hear religious and civic leaders speak.
It
culminated in the Archbishop of York, the Rt Rev Stephen Cottrell inviting
everyone to stand for two minutes of silence before greeting their neighbour
with a sign of peace.
The
attendees were then invited to light a candle or leave a message on the central
dais which had a large picture of a dove of peace on it.
The
Dean, the Very Rev Dominic Barrington, began the vigil by recalling his own
visits to Israel and the occasion when visiting the Al Ahli Arab Hospital in
Gaza, its internationally director told him: “It’s very simple if you want a
good life, make sure that your neighbour has a good life.”
The
Lord Mayor, the Rev Chris Cullwick, told the gathered crowd of the vigil: “In
the heart of a city that prides itself as a city of human rights, where else
would we be?”
Imam
Ammar Sacha of York Mosque began his statement by quoting from the Koran and
said that on God's eyes all are equal and that everyone present had come
together in the search for peace and under the umbrella of humanity.
She
called each death the loss of a world and said that whole galaxies had been
lost in the Israeli – Gazan conflict. She quoted from Jewish holy scripture.
Avtar
Matharu, the Sikh chair of York Interfaith, quoted “Ours is a Town for Everyone,” a hymn by the Unitarian
writer Clifford Martin Reed.
The
Archbishop said since the violence in Israel and Gaza began “I learn or
relearnt that human blood is red” regardless of who it comes from and “the cry
of a child needs no translation” regardless of the language used.

150
factories shut in Bangladesh amid violent protests
November
12, 2023
Bangladeshi
garment workers clash with police during a rally in Gazipur on November 9. They
are demanding a minimum wage of about $209 a month. — AFP
--------------
DHAKA:
Bangladeshi garment manufacturers on Saturday shuttered 150 factories
“indefinitely”, as police issued blanket charges against 11,000 workers in
connection with violent protests demanding a higher minimum wage, officers
said.
Violent
protests demanding better pay erupted last month, with at least three workers
killed and more than 70 factories ransacked or damaged since. Just a couple of
day ago 15,000 workers clashed with police on a key highway and ransacked Tusuka,
a top plant, along with a dozen other factories.
“Police
have filed cases against 11,000 unidentified people over the attack on Tusuka
garment factory,” police officer Mosharraf Hossain said.
Bangladesh’s
3,500 garment factories account for around 85 per cent of its $55 billion in
annual exports, supplying many of the world’s top brands including Levi’s, Zara
and H&M. But conditions are dire for many of the sector’s four million
workers, the vast majority of whom are women whose monthly pay, until recently,
started at 8,300 taka ($75).
While
a government-appointed panel on Nov 7 raised the sector’s wage by 56.25pc to
12,500 taka, garment workers rejected the hike and demanded a minimum wage of
23,000 taka.
Police
said 150 factories had closed in the major industrial towns of Ashulia and
Gazipur, both north of the capital Dhaka, as manufacturers feared further
strikes when Bangladesh’s working week began on Saturday.
“The
manufacturers invoked Section 13/1 of the labour laws and shut 130 factories at
Ashulia indefinitely citing illegal strikes,” said Sarwar Alam, head of police
in the manufacturing hub.
Ashulia
is home to some of the biggest Bangladeshi factories, with some employing as
many as 15,000 workers in a single multi-storied plant. On Thursday, police
fired rubber bullets and tear gas at around 10,000 workers in Ashulia when they
attacked officers and factories with bricks and stones.
At
least 20 factories were also shut down in Gazipur, which is the largest
industrial zone in the country, said its police chief Mohammad SarowarAlam.
The
minimum wage protests over the past two weeks have been the worst in more than
a decade, yet the prime minister has rejected any further pay hikes for
workers, with a warning that violent protests could disrupt production and
exports rendering them jobless.
On
the other hand, Washington has condemned “violence against protesting workers”.
The US, which is one of the largest buyers of Bangladesh-made garments, has
called for a wage that “addresses the growing economic pressures faced by
workers and their families”.

More
than 800 Sudanese reportedly killed in attack on Darfur town: UN
12
November, 2023
A
UN official has called the Sudan conflict 'one of the worst humanitarian
nightmares in recent history' [Getty]
-------------
Fighters
from a paramilitary force and their allied Arab militias rampaged through a
town in Sudan’s war-ravaged region of Darfur, reportedly killing more than 800
people in a multiday attack, doctors and the UN said.
The
attack on Ardamata in West Darfur province earlier this month was the latest in
a series of atrocities in Darfur that marked the monthslong war between the
Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, RSF.
Sudan
has been engulfed in chaos since in mid-April, when simmering tensions between
military chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan and the commander of the paramilitary
Rapid Support Forces, Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, exploded into open warfare.
The
war came 18 months after both generals removed a transitional government in a
military coup. The military takeover ended Sudan's short-lived fragile
transition to democracy following a popular uprising that forced the overthrow
of longtime strongman Omar al-Bashir in April 2019.
In
recent weeks the RSF advanced in Darfur, taking over entire cities and towns
across the sprawling region, despite the warring parties’ return to the
negotiating table in Saudi Arabia late last month.
The
dayslong attack in Ardamata came after the RSF took over a military base in the
town after a brief fighting on Nov. 4 with troops there, said Salah Tour, head
of the Sudanese Doctor’s Union in West Darfur. He said the military withdrew
from the base, adding that around two dozen wounded troops fled to Chad.
After
seizing the military base, the RSF and their allied Arab militias rampaged
through the town, killing non-Arabs inside their homes and torching shelters
housing displaced people, Tour said.
“They
violently attacked the town,” he said, adding that the RSF and their militias
targeted the African Masalit tribe. “They went from house to house, killing and
detaining people."
The
Darfur Bar Association, an advocacy group, accused RSF fighters of committing
“all types of serious violations against defenseless civilians” in Ardamata.
The
UNHCR said more than 800 people have been reportedly killed and 8,000 others
fled to neighboring Chad. The agency, however, said the number of people who
fled was likely to be an underestimate due to challenges registering new
arrivals to Chad.
The
agency said about 100 shelters in the town were razed to the ground and
extensive looting has taken place there, including humanitarian aid belonging
to the agency.
“Twenty
years ago, the world was shocked by the terrible atrocities and human rights
violations in Darfur. We fear a similar dynamic might be developing,” said UN
High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi.
The
U.S. State Department said it was “deeply disturbed by eyewitness reports of
serious human rights abuses by the RSF and affiliated militias, including
killings in Ardamata and ethnic targeting of the Masalit community leaders and
members.
“These
horrifying actions once again highlight the RSF’s pattern of abuses in
connection with their military offensives,” it said in a statement.
Ardamata
is located a few kilometers (miles) north of Geneina, the provincial capital of
West Darfur. The RSF and Arab militias launched attacks on Geneina, including a
major assault in June that drove more of its non-Arab populations into Chad and
other areas in Sudan.
The
paramilitary group and its allied Arab militias were also accused by the U.N.
and international rights groups of atrocities in Darfur , which was the scene
of a genocidal campaign in the early 2000s . Such atrocities included rape and
gang rape in Darfur, but also in the capital, Khartoum.
The
UN Human Rights Office said in July a mass grave was found outside Geneina with
at least 87 bodies, citing credible information. Such atrocities prompted the
International Criminal Court’s prosecutor to declare that he was investigating
alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the latest fighting in
Darfur.
The
conflict killed about 9,000 people and created “one of the worst humanitarian
nightmares in recent history,” according to the U.N. Undersecretary-General
Martin Griffiths.
More
than 6 million people were also forced out of their homes, including 1.2
million who have sought refuge in neighboring countries, according to the UN
figures.
The
fighting initially centered in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, but quickly spread to
other areas across the east African nation, including Darfur.
It
turned the capital into a battle ground, wrecking most of civilian
infrastructure, most recently the collapse of a bridge over the Nile River
connecting Khartoum’s northern part with the capital’s sister city of Omdurman.

PM
Anwar wants OIC members to assertively call for immediate ceasefire,
humanitarian aid to Gaza
12
Nov 2023
Prime
Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim addresses the 8th Extraordinary Islamic
Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Riyadh Saudi Arabia
yesterday. — Bernama pic
-------------
RIYADH,
Nov 12 — Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants Organisation
of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries to consistently and assertively
call for an immediate ceasefire and expedite humanitarian assistance to the
people of Gaza.
Speaking
during the 8th Extraordinary Islamic Summit of the OIC here yesterday to
discuss the ongoing Israeli aggression in Palestine, he said the Ummah expects
tangible results and concrete action from the one-day Islamic summit.
“I
call upon each of us (OIC members) to strategically employ our diplomatic
channels and networks in every dialogue and on every stage, be it bilateral or
multilateral, regional or international.
“Let
us consistently and assertively call for the following in a concerted
diplomatic campaign to institute an immediate ceasefire and expedite
humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza,” the Prime Minister said.
The
meeting, held at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Centre here, is
hosted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also the Prime Minister of
the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
More
than 11,000 Palestinians, a majority of them women and children, have been
killed as a result of more than a month of relentless Israeli airstrikes and
brutal ground operations in Gaza.
According
to an international human rights organisation, intense bombing by Israel saw
its fighter aircraft drop more than 25,000 tonnes of explosives on the Gaza
Strip since October 7, which is equivalent to two nuclear bombs.
The
Prime Minister, who arrived in Riyadh yesterday afternoon, also hoped for all
Israeli settlement activity and settler violence against Palestinians in the
West Bank to immediately cease.
Malaysia,
according to Anwar, supports the Arab Peace Initiative and negotiations with
reputable mediators to advance the two-state solution with a recognition of the
independent state of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, and with East
Jerusalem as its capital.
He
also wants OIC member countries to combat the global rise of Islamophobia while
safeguarding the right to peaceful expressions of support for the Palestinian
cause.
For
over a month, he said, the besieged people of Gaza have been subjected to the
barbaric cruelties and genocide by Israeli forces, indiscriminately targeting
men, women and children.
“Gaza
has become a graveyard of martyr innocents, mostly children of Palestine.
Neither homes, hospitals, nor religious sanctuaries, Muslim or Christian, are
safe from Israel’s indiscriminate attacks,” he said.
According
to Anwar, this continuation of the politics of dispossession of the
Palestinians is not taking place in the dead of night, but it is being
perpetrated in full view of the world in a flagrant breach of international
law.
He
said a sea of change in awareness has taken root, as shown in mass
demonstrations of unprecedented proportion throughout the world, including the
western world, in support of Palestine.
“Ironically,
in these capitals that herald free speech and human rights as sacrosanct
rights, some authorities have denounced proponents of the Palestinian cause,
maligning them as purveyors of hate speech and supporters of terrorism.
“And
I commend Your Highness for setting the tone of unequivocal support for the
Palestinian cause and for your condemnation of the colonisation and atrocities
committed by Israel. I wish to also thank President Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt for
facilitating the humanitarian aid,” he said.

Bombay
HC clears way for man to get home 48 years after grandfather was evicted
Nov
12, 2023
MUMBAI:
Observing that it is a "long unbroken cry for long-delayed justice,"
Bombay high court directed Mhada to allot a man whose family had waited close
to half a century for flat, one in a 16-storey building at Patelwadi, Parel
village, and give him its possession.
"The
petitioner and his family have waited a full 48 years for the allotment of a
re-accommodation tenement... For the last seven weeks, since 6th October we
have been told... it will be allotted at any time. And it is only now that we
are told that it cannot be allotted because the tenement in question is 579 sq
ft and apparently the petitioner's entitlement is only 300 sq ft," said
Justices Gautam Patel and Kamal Khata on Thursday.
According
to 34-year-old Ravindra Bhatuse's petition, in November 1975, his grandfather
was issued notice to vacate his 106-square-foot room in Zenab Manzil, Byculla,
and sent to Antop Hill transit camp. He was evicted a second time in 2018 as
the transit building became dilapidated. As he was not given a re-accommodation,
he shifted to his village. He died in October 2007 and his wife in July 2009.
His son had earlier died in January 1996, leaving behind his widow and grandson
Ravindra. "One generation gone. The second generation is partly gone.
There was no vestige of a re-accommodation being given," the judges noted.
In February 2010, the grandfather "long deceased, long evicted, long
banished from this city" was held eligible for permanent alternate
accommodation. Before HC, his advocates Yashodeep Deshmukh and Akash Jaiswar
said in spite of repeated enquiries and representations, Bhatuse was not
allotted premises as per his entitlement.

PM
Modi vows panel to look at SC sub-quota demand
Nov
12, 2023
HYDERABAD:
PM Modi declared Saturday a committee would be formed to consider the demand
for sub-categorisation of scheduled castes (SC) during his second public
meeting within a week in Telangana which votes for a new assembly on November
30.
This
has been a long-pending demand of the Madiga community in Telangana and Andhra
Pradesh. The announcement, made at the MadigaVishwaroop Sabha organised by the
Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti in Secunderabad, is expected to have
nationwide ramifications, bringing the issue of reservations and the creamy
layer into the spotlight this election season, and in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
The
Madiga community, constituting nearly 50% of the SC population in Telangana,
has long sought distinct quotas, arguing the benefits of reservation have
disproportionately favoured other SC groups like the Malas. PM Modi
acknowledged the 30 years of non-violent agitation by the Madiga community.

Gender
skew in schoolkids lower among Muslims: Data
Nov
12, 2023
There
is greater gender parity in the enrolment of Muslim children in school than in
total enrolment with more Muslim girls than boys being enrolled in upper
primary, secondary and higher secondary levels. While there are fewer Muslim
girls than boys enrolled at the primary level, even here the gender parity is
better than for all students.
This
was revealed in a report titled State of Muslim Education in India based on
UDISE (Unified District System of Education) data, which is a system of
collecting data from all recognized and unrecognized schools in India developed
by the department of school education of the education ministry.
According
to the data from 2012-13 to 2021-22, though the gender parity was better among
Muslim at the primary level (class I to V), there has been a steady worsening
of the skew among Muslims as in the total enrolment. While the report does not
explain why, one possible reason could be the worsening sex ratio at birth
during the years preceding this period. India's sex ratio at birth was 905 in
2008-10, which would be reflected in the children joining primary education in
2012-13. This ratio kept worsening till a low of 896 in 2015-17 from where it
improved to 910 in 2018-20, according to the sample registration system (SRS) conducted
by the census commissioner's office.

Saudi,
UAE, Qatar ‘Worried’ That Iran is Emerging as Leader in Muslim World Amid
Israel-Gaza War: Sources
By:
Manoj Gupta
NOVEMBER
12, 2023
According
to top intelligence sources, Iran has been calling the shots behind the scenes
on the theatre of war in Gaza and regionally the entire time. Lebanese military
group Hezbollah, which is engaged in exchange of fire with Israel at their
border, is making its decisions on Iran’s guidance
The
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is believed to be worried about the escalating
tensions with Iran-backed proxies such as Hezbollah, Yemen’s Houthi attacks on
Saudi Arabia, which could destabilise Iraq where Saudis, Emiratis, and others
recently invested billions of dollars.
The

Muslim Brotherhood operative intensifies lobbying campaign in Turkey for Hamas
November
12, 2023
Yemeni
Muslim Brotherhood operative Hamid Abdullah Hussein al-Ahmar, who owns several
companies in Turkey, has escalated his lobbying efforts in support of Hamas,
holding numerous meetings with Turkish government officials and representatives
from various political parties in recent weeks.
Having
established Turkey as his operational base, al-Ahmar has utilized an organization
called the League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds (LP4Q) in Istanbul to
advocate for the Muslim Brotherhood and its Palestinian affiliate, Hamas, for
some years. He has cultivated strong connections with the Islamist Justice and
Development Party (AKP) government and the pro-Hamas Turkish president, Recep
Tayyip Erdogan.
A
delegation led by al-Ahmar has been holding meetings with Turkish officials,
lawmakers and Islamist groups. These meetings have taken place since the launch
of attacks by Hamas’s military arm, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, on
October 7, prompting the Israeli military’s offensive against Hamas militants
in Gaza.
The
group’s efforts to influence lawmakers and, by extension, public opinion,
included a meeting with Parliament Speaker NumanKurtulmuş on November 8 in
Ankara. They had meetings with representatives from various political parties,
including Turkey’s Iran-backed Hizbullah’s political arm, HÜDA-PAR, which is
politically aligned with Erdogan’s AKP.

Iran
asks Islamic countries to designate Israel army 'terrorist group', but UAE
plans to maintain ties: Report
11

Iranian
President Ebrahim Raisi called on Islamic governments to designate Israel's
military a "terrorist organisation", news agency AFP reported.

nations, that have ties with Israel, to sever them. He called for greater
support for Palestinians, the report said.
Ebrahim

Riyadh on Saturday. He has arrived in Saudi Arabia to participate in the OIC

Wearing
a Palestinian keffiyeh, Iran’s Raisi arrives in Saudi Arabia for Gaza summit
11
November 2023
Iran’s
President Ebrahim Raisi arrived in Saudi Arabia on Saturday for a summit on
Gaza, state-affiliated media reported, his first visit since the two countries
agreed to restore ties in March.
Footage
aired on the Al-Ekhbariya channel showed Raisi, wearing a traditional
Palestinian keffiyeh scarf, greeting Saudi officials at the airport after
disembarking from his plane.
The
emergency meeting of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic
Cooperation (OIC) comes after Tehran-backed Hamas’s October 7 massacre in which
terrorists killed about 1,200 people in a brutal rampage in southern Israel and
took at least 240 hostages to Gaza.
Israel’s
subsequent aerial and ground offensive has killed more than 11,000 people,
according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The terror group’s figures cannot
be independently verified, and include members of Hamas as well as Gazans
killed by rocket misfires by terrorists.

Iran
and Saudi Arabia, Regional Rivals, Call for Gaza Cease-Fire
By
Ahmed Al Omran
Nov.
11, 2023
The
leaders of Iran and Saudi Arabia, regional rivals who restored diplomatic ties
this year, met in Riyadh on Saturday at a summit where they called for an
immediate cease-fire in Gaza and unconditional delivery of humanitarian aid to
the enclave, which Israeli forces have besieged since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks.
The
two Islamic countries, who support opposing factions in proxy conflicts across
the region, first announced their diplomatic breakthrough in March, after years
of hostility, in a deal brokered by China. But it was unclear whether the shift
would lead to a lasting détente between Saudi Arabia’s Sunni monarchy and
Iran’s Shiite government.
Israel’s
bombardment of Gaza, however, appears to have hastened the warming of ties
between Saudi Arabia and Iran, just as delicate diplomacy had been inching
Saudi Arabia and Israel toward possible normalization of relations. Iran, which
Israel considers its most dangerous foe, is a powerful patron of Hamas.
President
Ebrahim Raisi of Iran, whose visit to Saudi Arabia was the first by an Iranian
president to the kingdom in more than a decade, was greeted at the summit venue
by Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The Iranian
president draped on his shoulder a kaffiyeh, the black and white square
checkered scarf that has become a badge of Palestinian identity.
The
two leaders had spoken by phone for the first time just a few days after Oct.
7. Iran said in March that Mr. Raisi had received an invitation to visit the
kingdom shortly after the two countries announced resumed relations.

Needed a New Way to Get Money From Iran. It Turned to Crypto.

In
mid-2019, Israel’s military used a precision strike on a narrow street to kill

The

This so-called hawala network, as it is known in the Middle East, funneled tens
of millions of dollars in financing from Iran to Hamas’s military wing.

Will Sheikh Hasina Capitulate to Demands for a Caretaker Government?
SNM
ABDI
12
Nov 2023
At
the heart of mounting clashes between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government
and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led opposition, resulting in a dozen
deaths in police firing, destruction of public properties, strikes, and
blockades, and the detention of over 8000 protestors, is the demand that Hasina
steps down and allow a neutral government to supervise the general elections in
January.
The
political turmoil, worsened by a massive agitation by tens of thousands of
garment workers for tripling their monthly pay, has grave implications for
India which, to be honest, wields more influence in Bangladesh than the
Security Council’s five permanent members put together.
As
New Delhi has a far bigger stake than any other foreign power, it is keeping a
sharp eye on the unrest but the External Affairs Ministry hasn’t said anything
publicly so far.
Prime
Minister Narendra Modi’s government obviously doesn’t want Hasina to succumb to
BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami’s pressure to resign and hand over power to a non-partisan
caretaker administration to oversee the polls as that would inevitably result
in her Awami League’s crushing defeat which is not in India’s national
interest.

BANGKOK:
A Myanmar military jet fighter crashed Saturday in a combat zone in the eastern
state of Kayah, a military officer and a member of an anti-military resistance
organization said. The resistance group said the plane had been shot down, but
its claim could not immediately be confirmed. A spokesperson for the ethnic
armed group, the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force, said it had shot down the
plane during heavy fighting near Loikaw, the capital of Kayah state, which is
also known as Karenni.
However,
an officer in Myanmar's military, while confirming that one of its aircraft
crashed somewhere in Kayah, said he did not know whether it was shot down or
crashed due to technical failure.
The
officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to
release information, said a search for the crashed aircraft and two pilots was
underway.
Loosely
organized resistance groups have sprung up around Myanmar since the army seized

President Joe Biden said America's veterans are “the steel spine of this
nation” as he marked Veterans Day during a visit to Arlington National

Biden-Xi Jinping summit: 'Drug addicts, homeless miraculously disappear from
San Francisco'
Nov
11, 2023
Ahead
of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco, the
city has seen a sudden and notable clearing of drug addicts, dealers, and
homeless individuals from its downtown area. This cleanup effort coincides with
the arrival of international leaders, including President Joe Biden and Chinese
President Xi Jinping, for the summit scheduled from November 11 to 17.
As
per a report in the New York Post, the homeless population has been relocated
to other parts of the city in preparation for the APEC summit. Residents and
business owners, however, view these efforts as merely temporary fixes to a
more severe and ongoing problem, particularly as drug overdoses continue to be
a major issue in the city.
The
city's focus has been on specific areas in the Tenderloin and South of Market
(SoMa) neighborhoods, known for their concentrated homeless encampments and
visible drug use. The cleanup included clearing tents and increasing police
presence around these areas.
SoMa
resident and business owner, Adam Mesnick, told The Post he has seen temporary
housing pop up in hotels for some of the homeless over the past week. “They are
just essentially herding the problem around but offering no long-term
solutions,” Mesnick said.

Pittsburgh
Museum apologizes for handling of Islamic art show
by
Zachary Small
12/11/2023
NEW
YORK, NY.- The head of the Frick Pittsburgh apologized Thursday for the way she
handled the postponement of an exhibition of Islamic art, which had been
scheduled to open this month before museum leaders decided to delay it because
of the Israel-Hamas war.
In
an apology posted on the museum’s website, Elizabeth Barker, the museum’s
executive director, acknowledged that the museum had not initially been
forthcoming about its decision to delay the exhibition, “Treasured Ornament: 10
Centuries of Islamic Art,” and apologized for causing offense when she later
tried to explain the decision.
“There
are no excuses for what I said, regardless of my intentions,” Barker said in
the statement. “My words gave the offensive and utterly wrong impression that I
equated Islam with terrorism and that I saw Jews and Muslims — communities with
millennia of peaceful interconnection — as fundamentally opposed.”
The
museum initially made no announcement about its decision not to open the show,
saying on its website only that the delay was due to “a scheduling conflict.”
Barker later told The Tribune-Review that it was a show “that a forgiving
person would call insensitive, but for many people, especially in our
community, would be traumatic.” Her comments were denounced by local Muslim and
Jewish groups, who said they perpetuated harmful stereotypes linking Islamic
art to terrorism or antisemitism.

disappearances”, including that of political leaders.

Amidst
IMF review, PTI blames ‘N’ for crisis
Ikram
Junaidi
November
12, 2023
ISLAMABAD:
While the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been reviewing the second
tranche of $710 million for the country, the PTI has issued a White Paper
blaming the PML-Nawaz-led coalition government for the economic catastrophe.
“[The]
PTI government put the fast-dwindling economy of the country on the path of
rapid growth despite Covid-19 pandemic that played havoc globally; however, the
PDM government imposed through regime change conspiracy, reversed all the hard
economic gains of Imran Khan-led government, inflicting more economic
catastrophe to the country than the cumulative damage caused by floods,
earthquakes and pandemic,” the White Paper stated.
“The
economic indicators clearly showed that when the PTI took over the government
in August 2018, the economy was on the brink of collapse, as current account
deficit (CAD) for FY2018 stood at $19.2 billion, SBP reserves were recorded at
$9.4bn and $32bn loan payments were needed immediate funding. Moreover, the
rupee was over-valued by 23pc against the USD, exports declined by $10bn over
five years, while imports increased by $23bn, creating a hole of $33bn in our
reserves, besides the fiscal deficit was 7.6pc of the GDP,” it stated.
The
White Paper alleged that the PML-N left behind a mess in the energy sector by
overbuilding the power supply through imported fuel plants with
dollar-linked capacity payments. The circular debt inherited by PTI government
was Rs1.6 trillion, and annual capacity payments were Rs450bn in FY18, rising
to Rs1.4tr in FY23.

GB
govt faces backlash over wheat price hike

November

GILGIT:
The Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) government has opted to raise the subsidised wheat
price from Rs20 to Rs32 per kg, in a decision that met with rejection from
opposition parties that announced plans for a large-scale protest movement
against the sharp price increase.
The
GB cabinet session, presided over by Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan in Skardu
on Friday, led to this controversial decision.
GB
Finance Minister Mohammad Ismail, in a press conference with cabinet members,
explained that the price adjustment was necessary to address the shortage of
subsidised wheat in the region. The GB government aims to provide targeted
subsidised wheat through this decision.
“Wheat
subsidy will be provided to families having an income of less than Rs40,000,
government officials above grade 17, and people having above R40,000 per month
will not be entitled to subsidised wheat, the cabinet had decided,” he
announced.

KP
caretaker CM’s death gives rise to legal conundrum

Ahmad Shah
November
12, 2023
PESHAWAR:
The death of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa caretaker chief minister has stirred a
debate as to how a new caretaker chief executive of the province would be
appointed since there are no explicit constitutional provisions about
procedures to be adopted in such a scenario.
Articles
224 and 224-A provide a mechanism for the initial appointment of a caretaker
chief minister after the dissolution of a provincial assembly, but these provisions
are silent about procedures to be adopted in case of the death or resignation
of an incumbent.
Similarly,
the Elections Act 2017 provides for the functions of a caretaker government but
has no provision to deal with the present situation.

Jihad
says final statement of Riyadh summit reflects countries’ disavowal of duties
12/November/2023
GAZA
November 12. 2023 (Saba) - The Islamic Jihad movement in Palestine has
commented on the decisions of the joint Arab-Islamic summit held in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia to discuss the situation in Gaza, expressing its extreme
astonishment at what was stated in the final statement of the summit.
The
Islamic Jihad movement said in a statement that the wording of
"condemnation, demand and call" that filled the final statement
suggests that the statement was issued by a party that has nothing to do with
the massacres committed against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West
Bank, and not by the meeting of 57 countries, which appeared through its
statement as if it had nothing and could only appeal and demand.
The
statement added that "the final statement reflects the collective
repudiation of Arab and Islamic countries from their duties, distancing
themselves from their duty to protect Arab and Islamic national security, and
leaving Palestine and its people to the Zionist entity and its Western sponsors."
