Some Contradictions in Ahadith

Compiled by Shabbir Ahmed, M.D

Strangely enough, there are many "Ahadith" that go against other "Ahadith"! I found 300 examples this weekend only. In fact, the Hadith literature is loaded with countless contradictions.

        1.  Write only Quran:

It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Do not write anything from me; whoever has written anything from me other than the Qur'an, let him erase it.” (Narrated by Muslim, al-Zuhd wa'l-Raqaa'iq, 5326)

        Write both Hadith and Quran:

The prophet ordered Amr Ibn Aas to write everything that he spoke. (Hanbal 2/162)

        2. Uphold Quran and my Family:

“I leave for you what if you hold up to, you will never be misguided, the book of God and my family.” Muslim 44/4, Nu2408; Ibn Hanbal 4/366; Darimi 23/1, nu 3319

        Uphold Quran and my Sunnah:

“I leave for you what if you hold up to, you will never be misguided, the book of God and my Sunnah.” Muwatta, 46/3

        Uphold Quran only:

“I leave for you what if you hold up to, you will never be misguided, the BOOK OF GOD." Muslim 15/19, nu 1218; Ibn Majah 25/84, Abu dawud 11/56.

        3. Wash body parts once:

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet performed ablution by washing the body parts only once. (Bukhari Volume 1, Book 4, Number 159)

        Wash body parts twice:

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Zaid: The Prophet performed ablution by washing the body parts twice.( Bukhari Volume 1, Book 4, Number 160)

        4. Make no distinction among messengers:

Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: It is not proper for a person that he should say that I am better than Yunus (Jonah) son of Matthew.

[Hadith number in Sahih Muslim [Arabic only] 4382

        Make distinction among messengers:

I am the most honorable messenger; on the Day of Judgment, only I will think of my people. (Bukhari, 97/36)

        5. The Prophet did not urinate standing:

If someone says to you that the Prophet urinated standing, don’t believe him. (Sunen Nisai)

        The Prophet urinated standing:

The Prophet went to the garbage dump of a tribe and urinated standing.

        (Bukhari)

        6. Do not cross your legs:

Gaber Ibn Abdullah said, “The messenger of God prohibited a man from crossing one leg over the other while lying down on his back " (Moslem)

        Cross your legs:

Ebada Ibn Tameem said, his father said that he saw the messenger of God lying down on his back in the mosque while crossing his legs." (Moslem)

        7. Do not drink standing up:

Abu Hurayra said, the messenger of God said, "Do not drink while standing up, if someone forgot and did it, he should vomit what he drank."

        (Sahih Moslem)

        Drink standing up:

Ibn Abbas said, "The messenger of God drank from the water of Zamzam while standing up...."(Sahih Moslem)

        8. Do not turn to Mecca during urination:

You must not turn yourself to Mecca while you are urinating or defecating.(Hanbal)

May turn toward Mecca during urination:

Having witnessed that certain people avoided turning toward Mecca while urinating or defecating, the Prophet had his toilet designed pointing to Mecca to avoid pandering superstitions. (Bukhari)

        9. Kissing does not violate one's fast:

The Prophet kissed his wife when he was fasting. (Ibn Qutayba-Defense of Hadith)

        Kissing violates one's fast:

When he was asked if one’s fast would be considered violated, the Prophet answered in the affirmative. (Ibn Qutayba-Defense of Hadith)

        10. Drawing blood violates fast:

Drawing blood violates a fast.(Tirmizi Fast, Abu Davud Fast, Bukhari Fast)

Drawing blood does not violate fast:

Blood was drawn from the Prophet while observing the fast.

(Abu Davud Fast, Tirmizi Fast, Bukhari Medicine)
