Are We Living Islam’s Darkest Hour?

By Faisal J. Abbas

27 June 2015

How much terrorism can the world take in 24 hours? Friday 26 June, 2015 will certainly go down in history as a day that pushed the limit.

Just in case the daily dose of evil committed by the likes of ISIS or Iranian-backed militias in Syria and Iraq wasn’t enough, we witnessed three additional horrific attacks done in the name of Islam yesterday (and during the holy month of Ramadan, I might add!).

In Kuwait, a deadly bomb took the lives of 27 innocent people and injured 200 others in an ISIS attack on a Shiite mosque.

In the Tunisian resort town of Sousse, at least 39 innocent people were killed and dozens wounded when at least one ISIS gunman opened fire at a beachside resort. Meanwhile, a headless body and Islamist flags were found at the scene of an attack on a gas factory near France’s second largest city, Lyon.

Here is what will happen next: leaders of affected countries will visit the wounded and vow retaliation, world leaders and concerned parties will condemn, the press will talk about it for a few days.

Then, the story will die and terrorism will be forgotten – until it strikes again.

‘Quiet condoners’

The madness needs to stop. But this will not happen as long as there are Muslims who may not actively participate in these crimes but still think the likes of ISIS have grounds for what they are doing,

People might say the above argument echoes the rather unpopular (but accurate nevertheless) views of British PM David Cameron who recently accused many British Muslims of quietly condoning the ISIS ideology.

Now, while it remains a puzzle how anyone can agree – privately or publicly – with this group’s evil creed; one has to wonder if these “quiet condoners” realize that it is Muslims – and nobody else – who are ultimately being hurt the most?

Let us not forget that after almost each one of these attacks, hate crimes against Muslims increase and Muslim communities end up finding it harder to be accepted, to find jobs and to integrate.

Some might ask: what about Muslim grievances regarding occupied lands, unjust causes and unfair treatment, which these terrorist groups claim to be fighting for?

In response to that question, one can only ask how many of these grievances, while legitimate, have been solved by terrorism? If anything, the likes of ISIS and al-Qaeda has made these causes worse and much more complicated to resolve.

As simple as this truth is, many people refuse to see it and this is probably the reason why I remain extremely pessimistic about our region. Perhaps one positive thought remains. It is said that the night is darkest just before the dawn – I don’t think our night can get any darker!

  • Dear Mohammad Yunus Saheb, I have got your comment translated into Arabic, so it gets circulated to our Arabic readers as well.

  • Dear Faisal Abbas,

Do you have courage to get this short piece translated into Arabic and get circulated in the Arab world apart and if possible getting its translated version posted in non-Arabic non-English speaking countries. Put my name at the bottom to avoid putting your head on the line. It will very very hard to trace me:

    "The Qur'an declares:

“(It is but) a just recompense (jaza’) for those who wage war against God and His Prophet, and storm about the earth causing anarchy (fasad) that they are slain, or crucified, or have their hands and feet amputated from opposite sides, or expelled from the land. This has been their disgrace in this world, and a severe punishment (awaits) them in the hereafter (5:33), except (for) those who repent before you overpower them. (If so,) know that God is Most Forgiving and Merciful” (5:34)

The verse, the Qur’an does not elaborate on the expression “war against God and His Prophet” but since the whole history of Islam does not furnish any example of any group of people killing praying Muslims and Christians in their places of worship and burning people alive thus challenging the authority of God whose name is proclaimed in mosques and churches (22:40) and who has chosen for Himself the right to burn humans alive (4:56) if He wills, the perpetrators of these crimes are virtually denying God and committing a sin more grave than shirk – they are acting like God – they have virtually turned apostates despite their outward religiosity. In historical perspective, they have surpassed the early self-proclaimed ‘Muhakkim’ sect of Islam in their brutal killing of fellow believers. Caliph Ali compared them with mad dogs who had become too poisonous for Islam and claimed that they had lost their right to belong to the pale of Islam and accordingly outlawed them as Kharijites – those who exited from Islam. This is what must be done with the terror outfits of the day as this writer has repeatedly advising ref just posted comment.

  • Dear Faisal Abbas,

There may be more terrorism in the wind if we accommodate terror in Islam. But terror is no part of Islam and the ideologues of terror must be outlawed before it is too late.
This writer has done the following articles providing both religious ground and historical precedence to outlaw the ideologues of terror, thereby cut their supply line of human WMDs - martyrdom seekers who make suicide bombers and set the stage for an internal revolt in the the terror camp and deconstruction of terror in the name of Islam :

    - Declare The ISIS As The Kharijites (Those Who Seceded From Islam) As This Article Demonstrates And Declares: Global SOS To The Ulama, Muftis, Intellectuals And Scholars Of Islam

    - The Heinous Crimes That ISIS Is Perpetrating Totally Opposed To Islam And Those Killed Fighting For ISIS May Earn Divine Wrath Instead Of Paradise And ‘Hurs’ – An SOS To All Mosque Imams

    - The ISIS and its likes – the Muslim Violent Extremists of this era must be outlawed on historical precedent to save the Middle East from a tsunami of bloodshed and the world from a clash of civilizations.

    - Countering Violent Terrorism – Muslim Community leaders must warn youngsters against the dangers of Radicalization

  • some want to destroy curses through 'nitpicking'.

By rational mohammed yunus - 6/27/2015 8:23:43 PM

  • ISIS and Al Qaeda are probably the worst curses that Islam has ever faced. If they grow, Islam will replaced by a grotesque and inhuman creed.
