Mob hysteria in Muslim countries is considered passion for jihad and mob violence is appreciated as practical jihad. This is what has been happening in Bangladesh since August 2024. After the mob removed Shaikh Hasina and the so-called Yunus government has been installed, mob hysteria has gripped Bangladeshis. Since the police force has been virtually rendered toothless the morale of the mob is high and that of the police is low. As a result, unruly mob has taken to the streets and has unleashed a reign of terror in Bangladesh. In the name of correcting the alleged wrongs of Hasina government, the hysterical mob attacks any individual, organisation or businesses for not being Muslim or Islamic or associated with a particular sect or ideology.
After the so-called second revolution, the mob entered schools and forced non-Muslim teachers to resign. The mob led by clerics or imams of mosques attacked Mazars and demolished them because they considered demolishing Mazars jihad. For observing jihad, they did not have to follow any law or rule of the country. They thrashed toll plaza staff when they demanded toll fee because vehicles of madrasas were above the law. For the last six months, unruly mob has been doing jihad by attacking temples, minorities and business establishments for being loyal to Shaikh Hasina or having sympathy for India.
The latest jihad unleashed by the unruly Bangladeshis is beef jihad. Two weeks ago, a mob of Jihadis thronged The Rajdhani Hotel & Restaurant at Bangabandhu Avenue, Dhaka and demanded the receptionist an explanation for not having beef on its menu. The hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Dhaka running since 1978 and does not serve beef as its policy. No one objected to this policy before. Perhaps, the hotel caters to those Muslims who do not eat beef and to the non-Muslim Bangladeshis and foreigners. But since a new Bangladesh has emerged, not serving beef in a hotel has also become a crime or a sin because Bangladesh is now truly an Islamic country. The mob threatened to close down the hotel. Some Jihadis in the mob also shouted that the hotel owners were India's agents (Dalal). This is a manifestation of the level of hatred against India propagated by the Pakistan and US lobby that even not serving beef in a hotel can be seen as pro-India behaviour. To them, a hotel in an Islamic country Bangladesh must serve beef.
Two weeks have passed since the incident took place but it was not published by Urdu media or raised by the Islamic organisations who raise a hue and cry over the ban of non-vegetarian food in hotels by the administration on the occasion of Kanwar Yatra or other Hindu festivals. Therefore, a YouTuber Shafikul Islam of West Bengal wonders what would happen if Hindu organisations of India demanded that pork must be served in all hotels because India is a Hindu majority country.
The reason for this mob hysteria in Bangladesh is that unemployment has risen after the regime change last year. A number of factories and businesses have been shut and inflation is on the rise. People, particularly, the youth have no jobs and the religious organisations are feeding them with the opium of religious fanaticism and sectarian ideology. Last month, 4 Muslims were killed and more than a hundred were injured in the jihad between warring factions of Tablighi Jamat. While a section of Muslims are bent upon demolishing Mazars, the other section guards the Mazars to protect them. A nation that was doing scientific research, making economic progress and living peacefully has become a community of unruly mob attacking temples, hotels and businesses simply for being Indian agents.
The Bangladeshi masses have been fed with anti-India propaganda by the Pakistan lobby though Pakistan has nothing to offer Bangladesh or to contribute to its development. It can only spread extremism, sectarian hatred and terrorism in Bangladesh.
