Why do we call a hadith narrated by Hazrat Abu Huraira, the hadith of Gabriel? We know that the classification of a Hadith is done in numerous ways. Generally the hadith corpus is classified into eleven ways; for example, classification of hadith based on the numbers of its chain of narration, classification according to the accepted and rejected hadith, classification based on whether or not some hadith can be used to deduce the ruling, classification based on the merits of the narrators, classification based on the contradictions in the hadith-words of the two narrators, etc. But the question is what is the type of classification of the following hadith?
Abu Huraira narrated that one day while the Prophet was sitting in the company of some people, (The angel) Gabriel (Jibraeel or Jibreel) came and asked, "What is Iman (faith)?" Allah's Messenger replied, 'Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, (the) meeting with Him, His Apostles, and to believe in Resurrection." Then he further asked, "What is Islam?" Allah's Messenger replied, "To worship Allah Alone and none else, to offer prayers perfectly, to pay the compulsory charity (Zakat) and to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan." Then he further asked, "What is Ihsan (perfection or Tasawwuf)?" Allah's Messenger replied, “To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you” (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
This hadith is called the hadith of Gabriel. This name was not given on the basis of any classification of hadith. The reason for this hadith being called “the Hadith of Gabriel” is that the Angel Gabriel appeared to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and those around him in a human form and asked questions about Iman, Islam and Ihsan. Due to this reason, this is known as “the Hadith of Gabriel”.
This hadith is replete with useful points for the believers; (i) Iman that means to believe in heart, (ii) Islam which denotes deeds by limbs and (iii) Ihsan which refers to complete attention towards Allah. The goal of the believers should be continually read these prophetic words and to act upon them when applicable. By doing so we will be able to follow the exalted manners of the Prophet (peace be upon him
