Refutation Of Misleading Ideas Of Punjabi Taliban’s Emir On Democracy As An Un-Islamic System Of Governance – Part 1

The former head of the banned terrorist outfit of Pakistan, Sipah-e-Sahab and the present Emir of Punjabi Taliban, Maulana Asmatullah Muawiyah has written an article titled ‘Hamein nizam-e-kufr qubul nahin’(We Do Not Accept This Anti-Islamic System Called Democracy) in the mouthpiece of Taliban, Nawa-e-Afghan Jihad, December 2012. In this article he has likened democracy to non-belief and advocated the establishment of Islamic caliphate. He has also declared the government of Pakistan a government of kafirs and his organization, the Taliban is engaged in an un-Islamic war with the Pakistan government, killing innocent people, ministers and soldiers of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. We strongly condemn his misleading notions about democracy and jihad and present a point by point refutation of his article.

Maulana Asmatullah Muawiyah has written an article on the Taliban website Nawa-e-Afghan Jihad (December 2012 and January 2013 issues and to be continued) calling democracy to be antithetical to Islam, something he and his organisations and all Wahhabi-Salafi-Jihadi ideologues reject. In their misplaced view democracy, as the government of people by the people and for the people, militates against the sovereignty of God that Islam calls for.

Maulana Muawiyah was the head of the banned terrorist outfit Sipah-e-Sahaba and is presently the Emir of Punjabi Taliban. In other words, he is the self-proclaimed Amiril Mumineen (caliph) of the Pakistani Muslims. The modus operandi of this outfit is that they collect funds and recruit young Muslim boys in the name of fighting the holy war with America and use the funds and man force to fulfil their political ambitions in Pakistan and in this process spread sectarian hatred and kill innocent Muslims including women and children in suicide blasts. They have waged “jihad” against the Shias, Ahmadis, Hindus, Christians and Sufis. They have declared the Pakistan government a government of Kafirs (non-believers, infidels). Pakistan’s prime minister, president and all the other Muslim ministers are kafirs in his view.  Killing common Muslims in suicide attacks in residential areas and commercial complexes is Islam and the highest degree of jihad as one of his colleagues Al Abeeri has tried to prove in his article.

A major part of the article concerned is based on emotional sloganeering and Urdu couplets. Another portion of it is based on his crocodile tears on the political and economic condition of Pakistan and the rest of it is based on the supposed confrontation of Islamism and Democracy in Pakistan.

At the very outset he says, “If we keep silent on the rise of evil and remain silent due to compulsions, then, as the holy Prophet (pbuh) has said, we should be waiting for God’s wrath. We shall have to see the fate of our prayers. Why not sacrifice this mortal life of ours in the path of God. We should lay down our life for the foundation of a building called Islamic state and the system is called the system of Islam.”

According to the Maulana, Pakistan government is a rebellion against God and it is his duty to fight against it, and the only way to fight against it is causing bloodshed, killing innocent people, soldiers and officers of the Pakistan government. He exhorts Pakistani people to offer their blood for the establishment of the Islamic system because an Islamic system alone is the remedy for all the ills of the Pakistani nation. On the contrary the truth is that Pakistan has an Islamic government. Hudood laws, Anti-blasphemy laws and Anti-Ahmadiyya Laws have been enacted according to Islamic principles and the name of the country is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The president, prime minister and all the ministers and officers are Muslims but still Taliban leader Asmatullah Muawiyah says that the government of Pakistan is a government of kafirs.

He laments the corruption of the leaders of Pakistan, rising poverty, anarchy etc but says that the only remedy for all this is violence.  According to his beliefs, a revolution can only be brought about through bloodshed and it does not matter if innocent women, children and elderly people are killed in it.  From what he writes, it is clear that he does not have any solid and practical solution except emotional slogans to solve Pakistan’s problems. He has only one emotional slogan of Islamic Shariah and Islamic system which according to him only Taliban can give. Pakistan’s present system is not an Islamic system in his view.

Taliban never supported any peaceful effort for building the country and reforming the society. In Afghan too, it refused to join the democratic alliance citing the same reason that the alliance government was a government of kafirs. In Pakistan too, Asmatullah Muawiyah refuses to join any peaceful movement. Why did he not support Tahirul Qadri or launch a peaceful movement himself if he wanted to end poverty, corruption and exploitation in Pakistan?

He has not said anything against the Shias, Christians, Hindus and other minorities in this article to give the impression that he has no grudges against them whereas the truth is that on the one hand they are at war with the Pakistan government and on the other they are engaged in the ethnic cleansing of the Shias in the name of eliminating kufr as they are kafirs in his view. The dargahs of the Sufis are perpetually on their target where numerous innocent pilgrims are killed as a result of suicide attacks on them. His organisation, Taliban has caused internal turmoil and anarchy in Pakistan but feigning ignorance, he himself asks the people of Pakistan who are those causing conflict and anarchy in Pakistan. It is no secret that most of the problems Pakistan is facing today have been caused by the Taliban.

Jinnah had wanted to make Pakistan a secular state like India but under the pressure of the religious lobby, Pakistan gradually headed towards religious communalism which in turn gave birth to sectarianism whose fire engulfed one after the other sect. The life of the Ahmadis, Shias, Christians and Hindus was made a hell. Taliban and its affiliate organisations played an important role in promoting religious hatred.  That’s why the Hindu, Ahmadi and English ministers and officers appointed in various ministries of the Pakistani government under Jinnah are called by Maulana Asmatullah as imposed by the British. This is misleading and untrue. There was no other leader or intellectual after Jinnah who could provide Pakistan a strong leadership. There were only maulanas like Maulana Asmatullah who could deliver emotional lectures and were devoid of any political vision or wisdom and they did not have expertise in administrative and economic affairs. They only presented to the heads of the Pakistani state their lists of demands as to this should be done or that should not be done and used to blackmail Jinnah. Maulana says:

Eleven of the fifteen members of the first economic committee of Pakistan were Americans.”

It is obvious that during that time, there was a dearth of economic experts to qualify to be members of the economic committee. The Pakistan government was compelled to rope in American experts given their dislike of their erstwhile British masters. Why would the British government impose American officers in one of their former colonies? But Taliban and Pakistan leaders see the ghost of America in everything.

Similarly, when the time for demarcation of borders before the partition came, the Pakistani leaders did not have the blue print or statistics to stake claim on Muslim majority areas though they had been demanding Pakistan for years. If someone demonstrated any wisdom and capability, it was Zafarullah Khan who was the foreign minister of Pakistan and an Ahmadi. He appeared before the Boundary Committee and tried his best to get more and more Muslim majority areas included in Pakistan. But these sectarian leaders of Pakistan could never acknowledge his contributions due to his being an Ahmadi.

Yet another misconception they have formed is that democracy is an anti-Islamic and atheistic system of governance and only an Islamic caliphate is acceptable for an Islamic society as democracy is the government of kafirs. He says:

The people have become a joke in this hide and seek game between democracy and dictatorship. After all how long will we be suffering under these anti-Islam systems like democracy and dictatorship?

According to the Maulana, dictatorship and democracy both are anti-Islamic because as per his knowledge, democracy is an invention of the West, though actually democracy originated in Athens in Greece. It is another matter that many Western and European countries adopted this system of government. Since America and Britain with whom Taliban are at war have a democratic system of government, the Taliban ignorantly think that democracy is the invention of the Western civilization and therefore a system based on non-belief.
