Activist
Uzma Praveen Booked By UP Police For Offering Prayers At Public Place

March 2023
“Hello, what investigation
are you referring to? I believe that the media has blown this issue out of
proportion, especially channels like Zee News. As for my religious practices, I
have the right to follow my beliefs and practice Namaz or wear a hijab wherever
I choose. No power in the world can stop me from doing so,” the Muslim woman
activist tweeted in Hindi.
------------
Lucknow
police have booked Muslim woman activist Uzma Praveen for offering prayers and
posting its picture on social media.
The
matter came to light on Wednesday after Parveen and human rights activist
posted a picture offering prayers on her Twitter handle.
“A
case under charges of IPC 153 A (promoting enmity), IPC 200 (giving false
information), and IPC 283 (obstruction of public way) 66 IT act has been
registered against Uzma,” said the DCP Central Zone, Aparna Rajat Kaushik.
The
DCP also said Uzma had falsely shown the place of offering prayers to be Vidhan
Bhawan which is misleading. “Just to create hype on social media.”
Hours
the police action, Praveen tweeted that a mountain is being made out a molehill
and alleged that cops were following the media personnel in doing so. She
further wrote on Twitter that she was following her religion.

Muslims
in Uttar Pradesh have faced repeated incidents of discrimination by the police
for offering prayers, even in private spaces. In the current month of Ramadan
alone, two such incidents have taken place in Moradabad and Noida, where
Muslims were prevented from praying even in their own places.

Umrah Hajj

---------
Saudi
security forces have reportedly arrested a renowned female Egyptian media
activist in the holy city of Mecca while she was performing the Umrah Hajj
(minor pilgrimage) as Riyadh is using arbitrary detention to target dissenting
voices.
Netizens
across social media announced in a series of Twitter posts that Rania al-Assal
traveled to Saudi Arabia nearly 50 days ago to perform the minor pilgrimage.
However, she has not been heard from ever since and her whereabouts remain
unknown.
The
social media activists highlighted that Assal is a staunch supporter of the
anti-Israel resistance front as well as oppressed Palestinian and Yemeni
nations, and has for years sharply criticized the policies of the Riyadh and
Tel Aviv regimes in the West Asia region.
The
female Egyptian activist has been a trenchant critic of Riyadh’s atrocious
military campaign in impoverished Yemen, and repeatedly lambasted the brutal
siege against the conflict-plagued country.
The
activists expressed serious concern over the fate of Assal, and called upon
Saudi authorities to clarify her whereabouts.
Back
in early February, Saudi regime forces detained Yemeni woman Marwa al-Sabri,
while she was performing Umrah Hajj.
Yemen’s
National Committee for Women condemned her arrest at the time, saying that the
move was in flagrant violation of all human, moral and religious values and
principles.
The
committee, in a statement obtained by the official Yemeni Saba news agency,
described Sabri’s detention as in line with Saudi Arabia’s unrelenting
atrocities against the Yemeni nation, above all the ongoing war and blockade.
It
highlighted that the Yemeni woman was subjected to harassment and verbal abuse,
calling on human rights activists and institutions to denounce her detention
and pressure Saudi officials to immediately release and repatriate her to
Yemen.
Ever
since Mohammed bin Salman became Saudi Arabia’s crown prince and de facto
leader in 2017, the kingdom has arrested dozens of activists, bloggers,
intellectuals, and others perceived as political opponents, showing almost zero
tolerance for dissent even in the face of international condemnations of the
crackdown.
As
a result, Islamic scholars have been executed, women’s rights campaigners have
been put behind bars and tortured, and freedom of expression, association, and
belief continue to be denied.
Over
the past years, Riyadh has also redefined its anti-terrorism laws to target
activism.

-------------
Saudi
Ambassador to the US Princess Reema bint Bandar highlighted the unifying effect
of Vision 2030 in Saudi Arabia in a panel at the FII Priority summit in Miami.
She said the Kingdom’s strategy drove the success of young people in the
private sector today, and encouraged individuals to view themselves as part of
a collective and recognizing that their ambitions contribute to the wellbeing of
others.
“Unifying
vision… in the Kingdom we have that. The reason you are seeing success of young
people, not just entering the government, but entering the private sector is:
today, every single young person knows their role in this vision of evolving our
country,” Princess Reema said at a panel discussing the largest cost of living
crisis of the 21st century titled ‘The People’s Bottom Line’.
“Vision
2030 is creating the opportunity for the individual to be a part of the
collective and recognize that every piece, every step, of work, of ambition
that they have adds to the collective wellbeing of everybody else. And I think
that is what is really driving us as a nation,” she added.
The
ambassador underscored the importance of equal opportunities for both genders,
considering that 70 percent of the Saudi population is younger than 35 years
old, with a near equal male-female split. Vision 2030 has facilitated
educational pathways and job opportunities in fields such as hospitality,
tourism, and sports, with over $100 million spent on creating more than three
million jobs. These opportunities help uplift individuals and their families,
fostering a better society.
“Over
a $100 million has been spent on, not just traditional education, but expanding
the pipelines of opportunity for young people in hospitality, tourism, [and]
sports… These are over three million jobs and opportunities for young people to
earn a decent living; a wage that can then help them uplift, not just
themselves, but their households and families, and create opportunities for
others,” she said.
Princess
Reema expressed her optimism about the shift in young people's aspirations from
secure government jobs to entrepreneurship, with 58 percent now preferring the
latter. She sees this as a sign that the system is supporting and driving the
aspirations of young Saudis, inspiring them to contribute to the Kingdom's
progress and embrace their collective identity for shared wellbeing.
“If
you came to the Kingdom five years ago, not one young person would want to step
out of the government environment of jobs and crossover to entrepreneurship.
Today, 58 percent of our young people aspire to entrepreneurship, not
government work. [This] means that they’re willing to step out of the
traditional, secure income to opportunity, and that means that the system is
supporting and driving them. And I think that, for me, is what’s inspiring
about being in the Kingdom today,” she said.

employees had to travel to Quetta, hundreds of kilometers away from the place
of their work for the resolution of their work-related issues.

education department and senior female officers should be appointed there so

according to estimates by the General Authority for Statistics’ Labour Force
Survey.
Overall
unemployment in Saudi Arabia (for Saudis and non-Saudis) was 4.8% in Q4 2022.
It
represents a decrease from the previous quarter of 1 per cent and from a year
ago by 2.1 per cent from the year before.
Saudi
unemployment
The
unemployment rate of Saudis reached 8 per cent in Q4, a significant decrease of
1.9 per cent compared to Q3.
The
Labour force participation rate of Saudis remained unchanged at 52.5 per cent,
and the employment-to-population ratio of Saudis increased by 1 per cent to

rises in both the participation rate (up 1 per cent) and the
employment-to-population ratio (up 2.5 per cent).
In
contrast, the unemployment rate fell 3 per cent.
Among
females, in Q4, the unemployment rate decreased by 15.4 per cent, down 5.1 per
cent from the previous quarter and 7.1 per cent from a year ago.
The
noteworthy decrease in the unemployment rate resulted from a double effect of
the decrease in labour force participation and, at the same time, employment
growth.
The
participation rate decreased by 1 per cent to 36.0 per cent, while the
employment-to-population ratio rose by 1 per cent, reaching 30.4 per cent .
Among
males, in Q4, the unemployment rate fell to 4.2 per cent, down 0.1 per cent

employment-to-population ratio stabilised at 33.5 per cent, and the
unemployment rate rose by 1.6 per cent to 12.5 per cent.
Among
the Saudi core working-age population (aged 25-54), Q4 saw a decrease in the
unemployment rate by 2.5 per cent to 7 per cent.
The
reduction in the unemployment rate was driven by employment growth, with the
employment-to-population ratio rising by 1.6 per cent to 64.1 per cent.
The
labour force participation rate for Saudis decreased by 0.1 per cent, reaching
68.9 per cent .
The
decrease in the unemployment rate for the core working-age population (aged
25-54) was mainly driven by a significant drop in the unemployment rate for
females, down 5.8 per cent from 20.4 per cent in Q3 2022 to 14.6 per cent in Q4
2022.
For
Saudis aged 55 years and above, labour market indicators showed a minor change
in Q4 of 2022 compared to the previous quarter.
