Taliban Ban Afghan Women From Speaking Aloud in New Restrictions
10/28/2024
In a new escalation of restrictions on women, Taliban official Khalid Hanafi, the minister for the propagation of virtue and prevention of vice, announced that adult women in Afghanistan are now forbidden from allowing their voices to be heard by other women. Hanafi emphasized that women must refrain from performing Takbir—an Islamic prayer—or reciting the Quran aloud when in the presence of other women.
This announcement has provoked widespread outrage among Afghan women and rights advocates. Samira, a midwife in Herat, shared her frustration: “I have been working in clinics in remote areas for eight years, but in these last two months, the Taliban’s oversight has intensified.” She explained that health care workers are now barred from speaking with male companions of female patients, further complicating their work. “They don’t even allow us to speak at checkpoints when we go to work,” she added.
Hanafi defended the new rule, stating that if women are not allowed to perform Takbir, they should certainly not be allowed to sing. The regulations now require women to cover all parts of their bodies, including their faces, and silence their voices even within their homes.
Women’s rights activists have condemned the directive, saying it cripples women’s ability to live normal lives. One activist remarked, “How are women supposed to buy food, seek medical help, or even exist if their voices are forbidden?”
The Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has come under global scrutiny for its harsh policies. The United Nations and various human rights organizations have condemned the Taliban’s systematic rollbacks on women’s rights, which have left Afghan women with almost no freedom. In addition to the voice restriction, the ministry has also banned visual images of living beings in public broadcasts.

France’s hijab bans in sports ‘discriminatory’: UN experts

United Nations rights experts have slammed decisions in France barring women and girls who wear the Muslim headscarf from sports competitions as “discriminatory”, demanding they be reversed.
France invoked its strict rules on secularism to ban its athletes from wearing religious symbols, including the hijab, during the Paris 2024 Olympics.
France’s football and basketball federations have also opted to exclude players wearing the headscarf from competitions, including at the amateur level.
These decisions “are disproportionate and discriminatory, and infringe on their rights [of French athletes] to freely manifest their identity, their religion or belief in private and in public, and to take part in cultural life,” said the statement, signed by eight independent UN experts, issued on Monday.
“Muslim women and girls who wear the hijab must have equal rights to participate in cultural and sporting life, and to take part in all aspects of French society of which they are a part,” they said.
The statement was signed by the UN special rapporteurs on cultural rights, on minority issues, and on freedom of religion and belief, and members of the UN working group on discrimination against women and girls.
They are independent experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council, but who do not speak on behalf of the UN.
France’s laws on secularism are intended to keep the state neutral in religious matters, while guaranteeing citizens the right to freely practise their religion.
Among other things, they prohibit pupils and teachers in schools as well as civil servants from wearing “ostentatious” religious symbols.
But the experts insisted that “the neutrality and secular nature of the state are not legitimate grounds for imposing restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression and freedom of religion or belief.”
“Any limitations of these freedoms must be proportionate, necessary to reach one of the objectives stated in international law [safety, health and public order, the rights and freedoms of others], and justified by facts… and not by presumptions, assumptions or prejudices,” they said.
“In a context of intolerance and strong stigmatisation of women and girls who choose to wear the hijab, France must take all measures at its disposal to protect them, to safeguard their rights, and to promote equality and mutual respect for cultural diversity.”
The French contingent at the home Olympics in Paris did not include any hijab-wearing athletes. However, the International Olympic Committee allowed participants to wear the hijab in the athletes’ village.

28 Oct 2024
Two relief planes from the UAE as part of the "UAE stands with Lebanon" campaign landed in Beirut airport, with one of them carrying a contribution for the women of Lebanon from the 'Mother of the Nation' Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation.
Each plane was loaded with 40 tonnes of supplies for Lebanese women suffering from the consequences of the ongoing conflict. The UAE is continuing its humanitarian response to provide relief to the people of Lebanon.
The message accompanying the contribution from the Mother of the Nation said, "Dear mothers of Lebanon, our hearts are with you in all circumstances and times. The UAE was and still is with Lebanon, hoping for stability and security."
Commenting on the contribution from 'the Mother of the Nation', Sultan Mohammed Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Development and International Organizations and Member of the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council, stressed the keenness of Sheikha Fatima to support the women of Lebanon and stand by them in their difficult hour in tune with the humanitarian principles of the country.
Al Shamsi explained that the values of Emirati humanitarianism are an integral part of the legacy left behind by the founder the late Sheikh Zayed, who stressed the need for speedy response to peoples and nations facing the repercussions of conflicts and disasters anywhere in the world regardless of their origin, colour, faith, nationality or race.
The UAE stands with Lebanon campaign was launched as per the directives of President Sheikh Mohamed, with follow-up from Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Chairman of the Presidential Court, and under the supervision of Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Martyrs' Families Affairs, and Chairman of the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council.

HCDP confirms woman screaming at child was misidentified as Jordan Bowen
October 28, 2024
A woman who screamed in a child’s face during a Kamala Harris rally in Houston on October 25 is facing widespread backlash after a video of the incident went viral.
Social media reactions, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), have been overwhelmingly negative, with many critics questioning her conduct and association with the Democratic Party.
Initially, the woman in the video was identified as Jordan Sierra Bowen, a reported paid organizer for the Harris County Democratic Party. However, on October 26, the Harris County Democratic Party clarified on Facebook that the individual depicted in the video "is not and never has been an employee of HCDP or TDP."
Texas-based substack ‘Current Revolt’ also shared a photo of Bowen in a different outfit and appearance, allegedly taken on the day of the rally.
However, confusion still exists regarding the true identity of the woman, with some now suggesting her name is Desirea Willis, although this has yet to be independently verified. Internet sleuths also claim Willis has been deleting her social media accounts following the incident.

Kisan card goes online: 10 farm projects worth Rs400bn launched in six months, claims CM Maryam
Waseem Ashraf Butt
October 29, 2024
GUJRAT: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz claimed on Monday that 10 projects worth Rs400 billion meant for farmers had been launched in a record period of only six months.
For the first time in the history of Punjab, Chief Minister Kisan Cards worth Rs150bn have been provided. The chief minister was speaking to the participants in the Kissan Cards distribution ceremony in Hafizabad on Monday.
She announced increasing number of Kisan Cards from 0.5 million to o.75m. She also announced giving free laser leveler to farmers who cultivated wheat from 12 and a half acres to 25 acres. She announced giving free tractors to farmers having more than 25 acres. She announced providing agricultural machinery on rent without any profit to the farmers. She also announced increasing the number of Kisan Card dealers to 3,000.
The chief minister personally gave Kisan cards to the farmers at the ceremony.
She said, “The trend of agriculture and wheat cultivation in Punjab is increasing. Inflated electricity bills reduce the farmer’s profit. I have assigned the task of cultivating vegetables in every city. ‘People’ only raised slogans for farmers and the PML-N did substantial work for the farmers. The stock exchange has now reached 91,000 index because of ‘Nawaz Sharif’s government.’ I want bread and flour to be available to the people at cheap rates and farmers should also also get profit.”
She urged the farmer to have faith as she would not let them down. She claimed that people from other provinces are making phone calls to seek details of the project launched by the Punjab government.
“I see Punjab changing briskly as sedition, riots, sieges, arson, lawlessness and inflation are now coming to an end. Let me predict that I see the politics of ’Fitna ’ (trouble maker) is going to end as inflation, lawlessness and ‘Fitna’ are about to wither away,” the CM said and added that she had been assessing the situation through the faces of masses.
We do not have any magic wand but the fear of Allah and the passion to serve the people prevail in our hearts and minds. Whenever I visit any school or hospital, I see happiness on people’s faces. When the government of Nawaz Sharif assumed office, inflation is going down. Around 7,000 diesel and electric tubewells are being shifted to solarisation. If the price of flour increases, I immediately ask the administration and take prompt action in this regard,“ she said.
Farmers should grow wheat and giving them profit is her responsibility, said the CM adding that the prices of seeds, fertilisers and other items are coming down and for the first time, the government itself is reaching out to the farmers.
In the past, she said the government was actually buying wheat from the middle man and not from farmers.
“Nawaz Sharif inquires from me daily about Kisan card and tractor scheme as the Punjab government is working day and night to change the plight of farmers.” said the CM.
Earlier on the arrival of the CM at the ceremony, traditional regional Luddi was performed and a documentary on the farmer-friendly projects of CM Punjab was also presented.
Former federal minister Saira Afzal Tarrar said farmer can purchase seeds, fertilisers and pesticides at subsidised rates from Rs150,000 worth of Kisan Card
