PETALING JAYA: Several Muslim female
gymnasts from Terengganu have retired from the sport altogether following the
PAS-led state government’s decision banning women from gymnastics events
because of non-shariah compliant outfits.
The president of the Terengganu
Gymnastics Association, Abdul Razak Mat Amin, said the policy came into effect
last year.
Muslim women gymnasts were offered
places in the Wushu event for the 2024 Sukma (Malaysia Games) but only four
took up the offer.
“The rest decided to retire and focus on
their studies,” he told FMT.
Razak said discussions were held with
the Terengganu executive councillor for sports to allow Muslim women gymnasts
to compete, but the talks were fruitless.
“It’s a loss for Terengganu when the
state doesn’t participate in Sukma’s women’s gymnastics events.”
He said the shariah-compliance policy
meant that talent in Terengganu could not be nurtured.
“But for now, as long as the (PAS)
government is in power, we will comply with the policy that bans Muslim women
gymnasts from participating in Sukma.”
He was also puzzled that Terengganu had
decided to impose such a policy when Kelantan, which is also led by the Islamic
party, allows women to take part in gymnastics.
Razak said the association is now
focusing on the male athletes and has produced some of the country’s best male
gymnasts, the latest being Sharul Aimy Kamaru Hisam, who won a bronze medal in
the vault category at the Asian Games.
“We hope that the state government
provides full support to Terengganu’s male gymnasts,” he said.

Amid the ongoing war between Israel and
the Hamas group, hundreds of women and children have been missing and have been
taken hostage by the group. 600 Israelis and around 370 people in Gaza have
been killed since Hamas launched a sudden and extensive attack on Saturday.
Among those missing is an Israeli mother and her two daughters who were near
the Gaza border over the weekend when the Hamas group attacked their home.
The woman, Doron Asher, had travelled
with her girls to see their grandmother in Nir Oz village close to the Gaza
border, as per news agency Reuters. She called her husband Yoni Asher, who was
in central Israel, to inform him about the attack. "She told me the
terrorists are in the house," he said. He added that the phone
disconnected and he has not heard from her since then. Later, he tracked his
wife's phone through her Google account and noticed her location was Khan
Younis in Gaza.
Later, a video of his wife and children
emerged on social media while they were being taken to Gaza. In the footage,
the family is being asked to sit in a vehicle along with other hostages.
"I surely identified my wife, my two daughters and my mother-in-law on
some kind of a cart, and terrorists of Hamas all around them. My little two
girls, they are only babies, they are not even 5-years-old and 3-years-old ...
I don't know in what terms they are captive. I don't know what happened to
them," he said. The father of two begged for the safety of his family and
even offered to become a hostage in exchange for their release. "I want to
ask of Hamas, 'Don't hurt them. Don't hurt little children. Don't hurt women.
If you want me instead, I'm willing to come."

In an interview with the New Yorker, Mr
Asher said that he has been trying to contact government authorities to bring
back his family. "I also have been attempting to reach officials in the
government and security establishment, but nobody other than a social worker
has contacted me yet. I haven't eaten or slept in fifteen hours. I don't think
someone can eat in this situation or even think about eating. All I can do is
reach out to everyone who will listen and share the names and photos of my
family," he said.
On Sunday, Mr Asher said that he heard
from the security officials and foreign ministry but no one could provide him
with any new details. "Of course, like every other parent, I'm terrified
and fearful-I worry about what will happen in the coming days. The uncertainty
is so hard to deal with. It's extremely difficult. I don't know how much time
it will take to bring them home. Not to mention, when you're reaching out to
officials all day and no one responds, it feels like you've been abandoned.
That you're in no man's land. It almost feels like there's nobody I can rely
on."

Abused for Flaying Samastha Secy’s Misogynist Remark

KOZHIKODE: Women’s rights activist V P Zuhara was
verbally abused at a function, and later asked to leave the venue, after she
criticised Samastha leader Ummer Faizi Mukkam for his remarks against Muslim
women who do not wear the hijab.
Zuhara, the founder of Muslim women’s
movement ‘Nisa’, was speaking at the ‘Back to school’ programme organised by
Kudumbashree at the Nallalam Government High School in Kozhikode on Sunday.
While talking about the importance of women’s rights, she criticised Faizi, the
Samastha Kerala Jam-iyyathul Ulama, for his recent remark that Muslim women who
decide not to wear the hijab were not real Muslims and could be labelled as
amoral.
“The platform by Kudumbashree was the
best place for me to raise my protest against the misogynist statement made by
the Samastha leader. Since it was a platform meant for women and a venue
discussing women’s rights and freedom, I couldn’t think of a better place to
raise my voice,” Zuhara told TNIE.
She said: “Wearing a hijab or not, or
wearing a particular dress, all fall under an individual’s personal choice. We
are no one to protest against or comment on it. Even if I remove my hijab, I
will remain Zuhara. My ideologies and
perception towards society will remain the same.” While speaking against Faizi,
Zuhara also removed her hijab in protest. Infuriated by her action Shahul
Hameed, the PTA president of the school, abused her verbally.
“He rushed to the hall and started
showering abuses on me,” she said. Later, Zuhara was asked to leave for
allegedly misusing the platform for her protest. Zuhara has lodged a complaint
with Nallalam police against Hameed. The police have started a preliminary
probe.
Faizi had said women who do not wear a
hijab are promiscuous and that Muslim women will not be allowed to be
promiscuous. He said the hijab is Islamic and if anyone reacts against it, he
will oppose it.
