INDORE: Raped and brutalized, the
12-year-old girl Ujjain rape survivor was on the verge of dying when she was
begging people for help, and being shooed away.
Sources told TOI the grievous nature of
the injuries to her private parts. They are too gruesome to be published.
"They would have proved fatal if treatment had been delayed any
further," one of them told TOI on Friday. She has been operated upon and
is expected to recover, they say, although she continues to be in deep trauma
and agony.
Whenever she regains consciousness, she
calls for her mother and asks for her school uniform (which she was wearing
when she was raped), sources said.
Described as 'mentally unstable' by her
family, the child couldn't even name her village or her family members, which
makes her desperate pleas for help on the streets of Ujjain even more
heart-wrenching. To add to the horror, her family says that police in their
village in Satna district refused to accept a complaint when they first went to
report her missing on Sunday night, allegedly telling them, "Go, look for
her yourselves and come back after 24 hours."
Raped child's kin: Police told us to
'come back after 24 hrs'
The child's family members arrived in
Ujjain on Thursday and vented their ire at Satna cops for allegedly not
registering an abduction complaint in time. Not even when the grandfather told
them that she was "mentally unstable".
Speaking to TOI over phone, the minor's
uncle said that she left home unnoticed when her grandfather went to graze
cattle, on Sunday. The family got worried when they noticed her missing late
afternoon and began looking for her. After drawing a blank, they went to the
local police at 10pm to file a complaint. The police station in charge
allegedly asked them to look for her themselves and come back after 24 hours if
they didn't find her, the uncle said. The family looked for her all night at
the railway station, bus stops and other areas but in vain. They went back to
the cops, and this time, an FIR was registered.
Police have since pieced together her
movements and it seems she could have been rescued had an all-stations alert
been issued on Sunday.
"The child went to the small
railway station near her village by bus and boarded Anand Vihar train alone at
9:50am on Monday. She got off at 10:15am at Satna station (42km away) and
boarded the Kshipra Express around 11am. She got off the train at Ujjain (720km
away) the next day at 10am," said Satna SP Ashutosh Gupta.
A few hours later, she would be raped in
Ujjain and left to wander the streets, semi-nude, bleeding and traumatized. The
SP said that the child's grandfather had mentioned in his complaint that the
girl is 'mentally unstable' and wasn't able to name her village or any of her family
members.
The survivor's uncle said that her
mother had abandoned her when she was two years old and that her father is
mentally unstable. Two years ago, her grandmother, who she considered as her
mother, died, leaving her traumatized. It's the grandmother she may be
recalling when she drifts in and out of consciousness.
Her injuries are so severe that it led
some to wonder if more people were involved. Ujjain police have negated the
idea. "The investigation in the case is almost over. We only have to
collect circumstantial and medical evidence after which the challan will be put
up in court," said Ujjain SP Sachin Sharma.
Police have arrested an auto driver for
the sexual attack and another driver for concealing evidence.
Ujjain police did not disclose the
extent of injuries to the girl, but said she was getting the best treatment.
"Her condition is out of danger and she is under constant
observation," Sharma added.
MTH hospital in-charge Dr PS Thakur came
out with a health bulletin that said that she had undergone the surgery on
September 26. "In the last three days, there has been an improvement in
her health. She is being monitored by a gynaecologist, a paediatric surgeon and
a psychotherapist. She is on a liquid diet. Her health is stable," the
bulletin said.
(The victim's identity has not been
revealed to protect her privacy as per Supree Court's directives on cases
related to sexual assault)

UNAMA and Rights Activists demand
immediate release of Afghan activists Julia and Neda
Activists Julia and Neda

September 30, 2023
Following the recent arrest of two
women’s rights activists by the de facto administration in the past ten days,
the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and numerous civic
activists have urged the immediate release of these detained women.
UNAMA, in a statement released on
Friday, demanded that the Taliban administration put an end to arbitrary
detentions. They have consistently emphasized that the Taliban de facto
authorities should ensure detainees have access to medication and family
visits.
It should be noted that the intelligence
forces of the Taliban administration recently arrested Julia Parsi, one of the
female protesters, along with her son on Wednesday. This happened shortly after
Neda Parwani, with her child, was detained about ten days ago.
These human rights organizations have
widely condemned arrests. UNAMA’s office has stated that these detentions are
taking place while Rasoul Parsi, a university professor, Mortaza Behboudi, a
photographer, and Matiullah Wesa, an education rights activist, remain
imprisoned by the interim government.
On the other hand, Richard Bennett, the
UN Human Rights Reporter in Afghanistan, has referred to these arrests as
arbitrary and has called for the immediate release of the detainees.
Previously, Amnesty International had
stated that Julia Parsi and other detainees should be released unconditionally.
A group of women protesters in
Islamabad, Pakistan, also demanded the immediate release of Julia Parsi in a
collective protest.
In response to the arrest of Julia and
Neda, women protesters launched a campaign for their release. They called on
the international community and human rights organizations to take action for
the freedom and safety of women in Afghanistan.
It should be noted that over the past
two years, dozens of cases of detention, torture, and mistreatment of female
protesters have been reported, leading to the disappearance of many women’s
rights activists.
MonisaMubariz, a women’s rights activist
and influential figure in the women’s protests, expressed concerns about
Julia’s well-being in Taliban custody.
Mobariz emphasized, “We are very
concerned about Julia’s life,” as the Taliban does not confirm Julia’s
detention and does not accept responsibility for any harm that may come to her.
Julia is the founder of the grassroots
women’s protest movement in Afghanistan, one of the leaders of the Alliance of
Protest Movements, and the founder of a women’s library. Her arrest has raised
serious concerns among the protesters.
Mobariz was questioned about the
potential for Julia’s arrest to trigger further detentions of female protesters
in Afghanistan and whether the leaders of the Alliance of Protest Movements
have taken measures to ensure the safety of female protesters in the aftermath
of Julia’s arrest.
Ms Mobariz responded that Julia had been
under surveillance for some time and had recently stopped using her mobile
phone. She changed her residence in Kabul about ten days ago.
She also added that there is no capacity
to relocate female protesters within the country, and human rights
organizations have not provided any assistance.
According to her, the United Nations
Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has repeatedly rejected requests for
a “safe house” to protect female protesters from existing threats.

Taliban’s Global Acceptance Depends On
Women’s Rights Respect: US Envoy
By Fidel Rahmati
September 30, 2023
The US envoy for Afghan women and human
rights, Rina Amiri, on Saturday, said that the global consensus is clear. If
the Taliban does not respect women’s rights, it cannot join the international
community.
Amiri, on her social media platform X,
revealed that during the 78th UN General Assembly, she engaged in high-level
meetings with officials from various countries, concentrating specifically on
Afghanistan and the challenges faced by women and girls.
According to Amiri, officials delivered
a clear message: the Taliban must respect Afghan and women’s rights to be part
of the international community.
During a meeting with representatives of
Muslim-majority countries on the sidelines of the UNGA, there was unanimous
agreement that the Taliban’s oppressive policies, especially towards women and
girls, are incompatible with global norms and deeply harmful to Afghanistan.
The participants committed to sustaining
international solidarity for Afghanistan and emphasized the importance of
diplomatic and concrete efforts to support Afghan women and girls.
Meanwhile, Amiri stressed the need for
the international community to communicate to the Taliban that engagement seeks
to improve the situation, conditional on respecting people’s rights. She
emphasized promoting civic discourse, tolerance, and meaningful representation
for women and civil society in Afghanistan.
She also called for concrete support, including
education, scholarships, and job opportunities, to counter the Taliban’s
repressive actions.
Following the Taliban’s seizure of power
in Afghanistan, they have implemented a series of oppressive measures that
severely curtail women’s freedoms. These policies include restricting their
access to education and employment opportunities, effectively confining many
women to their homes, where they face significant limitations on their ability
to lead independent lives.
The Taliban’s actions have sparked widespread
concern and condemnation for the country’s grave infringement on women’s
rights.

Palestinian Female Soldiers No Longer To
Guard Security Prisons Amid Suspected Sex Scandal
By MICHAEL HOROVITZ
29 September 2023
An IDF soldier serving as a prison guard
during her mandatory military service is suspected of having an intimate
relationship involving sexual activity with a Palestinian security prisoner, it
was reported on Friday.
The Petah Tikva Magistrate’s Court
placed a gag order on many of the details of the case, including the location
of the prison.
Shortly after news of the incident
broke, Israel Prison Service Commander Katy Perry and National Security
Minister Itamar Ben Gvir issued a joint statement saying that all female IDF
soldiers would “immediately stop” serving as guards in security prisons.
The joint statement added that the move
would be implemented in the coming days to allow for a short period for the IPS
to prepare for the switch. Stopping the service of female IDF soldiers in
security prisons has been repeatedly pushed for, including by Ben Gvir, but has
stalled due to a lack of manpower to replace the female soldiers.
According to the Ynet news site, which
first reported the case, over the past year, the guard in question allegedly
established ties with the prisoner, a Fatah member convicted of involvement in
a terror attack in central Israel that led to the deaths of Israelis.
The prisoner allegedly possessed a phone
inside his cell used to keep in touch with several of the female guards and
exchange photos, according to initial findings by the IPS. It was unclear from
the report if the phone was provided by one of the guards.

visit to Nafha Prison, January 6, 2023. (Israel Prison Service)
Ynet reported that there is a suspicion
that a consensual physical interaction occurred between the guard and the
prisoner.
The matter was reported to the IPS
security department, which then passed the information to the police. According
to Ynet, the prison’s commanders were unaware of the relationship.
A suspect in the case was questioned by
police on Thursday, where she revealed four others were involved in
inappropriate contacts with the prisoner. She was released to house arrest on
Thursday. The five soldiers are said to be nearing the end of their mandatory
service.
The guard’s lawyer argued that the
prisoner threatened his client into a non-consensual relationship, but a senior
police official told Ynet that evidence suggested otherwise.
The Palestinian inmate was transferred
from his cell to a segregated wing Friday morning and will be questioned later,
IPS said in a statement.
In a statement, Perry said that due to
the “severe incident” in question, the IPS would “take all necessary steps and
have zero tolerance for instances of [violating] moral values.”
Perry said that IPS has led a massive
recruitment drive in recent months and has brought on 1,000 new guards in order
to replace the IDF soldiers who will no longer be serving in security prisons.
Ben Gvir said earlier Friday that the
“horrifying report” proves the need to dismiss female soldiers from guarding security
prisoners.
“Immediately after I began my role, I
insisted on this, and since then took significant steps on the matter, and the
presence of female soldiers in [prison] wings has been reduced,” he said.
The minister issued an order in January
to begin the process of permanently halting the placement of Israel Defense
Forces soldiers as prison guards for incarcerated terror inmates.
The decision came more than five months
after then-defense minister Benny Gantz ordered an investigation into the arrangement
last August, following bombshell accusations that convicted terrorists had
assaulted and raped female soldiers serving as prison guards, and that some
prison guards had “pimped out” the conscripts to placate inmates.

Jobless Woman Pleads Guilty To Aborting
Baby In Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
30 Sep 2023
STEPHANIE LEE
KOTA KINABALU: An unemployed woman has pleaded
guilty to trying to abort her baby in July.
The act, which is an offence under
Section 315 of the Penal Code, provides a jail sentence of up to 10 years or a
fine, or both, upon conviction.
However, the 22-year-old would only know
her fate on Nov 2, after the Magistrates' Court received her social report as
the incident happened when she was 21.
According to the facts of the case, the
woman had been admitted to the Women and Children’s Hospital in Likas for a
severe abdominal pain and was later found to be 25 weeks pregnant.
She soon gave birth to a 800g fetus
which died an hour later.
The court was further told that a day
before, which was on July 4, the woman had bought three pills to terminate her
pregnancy.
The court also heard that the woman, who
had a fiance, did not know that she was expecting a child as her menstrual
cycle had been inconsistent and she only found out that she was pregnant in
June.
She was afraid and ashamed of the
matter, which led her to decide to abort the pregnancy.
Duty counsel Lim Ming Zoong informed the
court that the accused was 21-years-old at the time of incident and was still
considered a youthful offender and applied for a social report to be prepared
for her.
The prosecution proposed a RM2,500 bail
with one surety.
Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan
Ghazali granted bail on one surety pending the next mention date.
Section 315 of the penal code states
that 'an act done with intent to prevent a child being born alive or to cause
it to die after birth' is an offence 'unless it is for the purpose of saving
the life of the mother.'
