The Peace Research Institute Oslo has announced that Mahboba Saraj, an Afghan women’s rights activist, and Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian journalist and human rights activist, have been selected as finalists for the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize.

Reuters, citing Henrik Urdal, the director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, reported on Friday that this year’s most likely laureates for the prize are human rights activists.

According to reports, Mahboba Saraj, an advocate and activist for women’s rights in Afghanistan and Narges Mohammadi, a journalist and women’s rights activist in Iran.

Previously, Mahboba Saraj’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize by the Peace Research Institute Oslo had sparked widespread reactions among women’s rights activists.

Critics argue that she actively supported the Taliban regime, potentially compromising women’s rights to education and work, and refrained from condemning the Taliban’s oppressive policies against women in Afghanistan. This has raised concerns about her position on gender equality and Afghan women’s rights, sparking ongoing debate and scrutiny.

Afghan women protesters and grassroots Afghan women’s groups had previously stated in a statement in response to Saraj’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize that “Mahboba Saraj has made no fundamental effort to restore peace and freedom for Afghan women, and she has done nothing to help women participate in education, work, or public life.”

The Nobel Peace Research Institute also added that Mahboba Saraj has been a champion in child health, education, combating corruption, and preventing domestic violence.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee to individuals or organizations that have made efforts in peace and human rights advocacy.

Afghanistan: Women Must Accept 'Man's World' As They Are Not Equal, Says Taliban Education Minister

The acting higher education minister of Afghanistan's Taliban government, Neda Mohammad Nadim, has recently remarked that despite efforts made by Western countries for gender equality, men and women are "not equal".

Speaking at a meeting at the Baghlan University, Nadim said that there were attempts being made to "demolish" the current system under the pretext of addressing concerns related to women, Afghan-based TOLO News reported.

"The Almighty Allah has distinguished between men and women. A male is the ruler, he has the authority, he must be obeyed, and the woman must accept his world. A woman is not equal to a man; however, they [Western nations] have placed her above a man," he said at the meeting.

Nadim said that the responsibility of the government is to act with "good behaviour" for the betterment of the people whilst providing security and justice. "This is the responsibility of the Islamic Emirate: to treat the people well," he added.

Some professors and students of Baghlan University asked Nadim to create a suitable educational environment in universities, in terms of facilities and equipment.

Women under Taliban rule

It is worth noticing that since coming to power in 2021 after the withdrawal of US and NATO forces, the Taliban has imposed a series of harsh restrictions on Afghan women and girls, including stopping them from going to school and prohibiting Afghan women from employment at local and non-governmental organisations.

Taliban employs a different interpretation of the centuries-old Sharia law, which includes public executions, amputations and flogging. Women's access to public parks has already been restricted and they now require a male guardian for long-distance travel. The harsh measures on women have triggered international outrage and concerns over human rights violations, especially in Muslim-majority countries.

Earlier this month, the Taliban authorities prohibited girls older than 10 from going to elementary school classes in certain areas of Afghanistan. Authorities from the Taliban-administered Ministry of Education told principals of schools and short-term training classes in the Ghazni region that "any girl more than 10 years old isn't permitted to study in elementary schools

Prior to that, Afghanistan banned women's beauty parlors in Kabul and different territories across the nation. It said that the salons offered services forbidden by Islam and also caused economic hardships for grooms' families during wedding festivities.

In April, in another diktat by the Taliban, authorities prohibited women from attending the Eid celebrations. This ban has been put in place in two provinces of Afghanistan, according to reports. Women in Baghlan and Takhar have been prohibited from going out in groups during Eid-ul-Fitr.

US envoy urges immediate release of detained Afghan activists by Taliban

Fidel Rahmati

October 1, 2023

The US envoy for Afghan women’s rights in Afghanistan has called for the release of Julia Parsi, NedaParwani, and other activists detained by the Taliban.

Rina Amiri wrote on her social media platform X that the Taliban, by depriving the population and enforcing a culture of fear and repression, cannot claim that the lives of Afghans have improved.

Earlier, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) urged the prompt release of these detained women. UNAMA stated on Friday, calling for an end to arbitrary detention by the Taliban administration and stressing the importance of providing detainees with access to medication and family visits.

Some women’s protest movements in Afghanistan have expressed concern about the situation of these two women activists in statements and have called on human rights organizations and country representatives to work for their freedom.

It’s important to highlight that the Taliban’s intelligence forces have recently arrested Julia Parsi, a female protester, along with her son on Wednesday. This incident occurred shortly after NedaParwani’s and her child’s detention about ten days ago.

So far, the Taliban has not commented on the detention of Ms. Parsi and Ms. Parwani.

Since the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan, women protesters have consistently demonstrated openly in cities and hidden locations against the group’s restrictions on women’s fundamental rights.

The Taliban’s response to these protests has been widespread arrests, torture, and extensive repression.

In the past two years, the Taliban has consistently detained activists, journalists, and university professors who oppose their ideologies and policies.

Currently, MortezaBehboudi, a journalist; Rasoul Parsi, a university professor; and MatiullahWesa, an advocate for girls’ education, are also held by the Taliban.

Over one million mothers and children deprived of food aid in Afghanistan: WFP

Fidel Rahmati

October 2, 2023

The World Food Program reports that over one million mothers and children in Afghanistan have been deprived of food assistance due to severe budget constraints.

On Monday, this organization warned that the situation for women in Afghanistan will worsen without immediate funding.

The World Food Program, in a previous tweet on their official Twitter page, stated that currently, women in Afghanistan bear the brunt of reductions in aid.

According to information released by the World Food Program, four million mothers and children in Afghanistan suffer from malnutrition.

Recently, this organization stated that they are forced to choose between those hungry and those severely suffering from hunger in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the organization is stressing the urgency of securing one billion dollars to provide for the vulnerable during the approaching harsh winter.

The World Food Programme addresses budget constraints at a critical juncture when 15 million people in Afghanistan are uncertain about their next meal.

According to a United Nations report, a staggering 97% of the Afghan population lives below the poverty line, and the demand for humanitarian assistance continues to rise.
