Roller-Skating Girl Child, Tala Abu Ajwa, With ‘Lots Of Dreams’ Killed In Gaza Strike

An Israeli strike killed 10- year old Tala Abu Ajwa

------

September 05, 2024

GAZA CITY: At first Hussam Salah Abu Ajwa resisted letting his daughter out to play, but finally he relented so she could zip around on her pink skates near their Gaza City home.

Within two minutes he heard the boom of a strike that made the girl, 10-year-old Tala Abu Ajwa, the latest child fatality in the ongoing war in Gaza that has killed tens of thousands.

“She begged me and said, ‘Please, Daddy, let me go out’. I felt sad because she wanted to play with the girls” in the neighborhood, Hussam told AFP after the strike on Tuesday.

Upon hearing the blast he raced outside, but “when I reached the flat that had been bombed, I found her among the rubble,” he said.

“I recognized her by her roller skates, the only thing that was visible.”

Details of the strike were unclear.

A photograph of Tala has since circulated widely on social media, the skates with white velcro straps and pink wheels sticking out from underneath a white cloth covering her dead body.

Mass wartime displacement and destruction of schools have deprived children across the Gaza Strip of chances for recreation.

More than 70 percent of schools operated by the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, known as UNRWA, have been destroyed or damaged, agency chief Philippe Lazzarini said on X this week.

“The longer children stay out of school, the higher the risk of a lost generation, fueling resentment & extremism,” Lazzarini said.

“With no ceasefire, children are likely to fall prey to exploitation including child labor and recruitment into armed groups.”

For Tala, the problem was more basic: she simply did not like being cooped up indoors all the time, Hussam said.

“She was cheerful and always liked to laugh, and loved to get out of the house,” he said.

“She had lots of dreams. She was always asking me for lots of things and I responded to her requests. She told me. ‘I want a pair of skates’, so I brought them for her.”

The war in Gaza was triggered by Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7 which resulted in the deaths of 1,205 people, mostly civilians and including hostages killed in captivity, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.

Of 251 hostages seized by Palestinian militants during the attack, 97 remain in Gaza including 33 the Israeli military says are dead.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign against Hamas has killed at least 40,878 people in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.

The UN rights office says most of the dead are women and children.

Now that Tala is gone, her parents and brothers are left to marvel at their bad luck, with the strike landing during one of the rare occasions Hussam let one of his children go outside.

“She used to say to me, ‘Why don’t we live like all the other children in the world? I wish we could live a peaceful life. We don’t want wars, Mum. I’ve had enough of wars’,” her mother, Umm Tala, recalled.

“She was one of the best pupils and she excelled, she was very intelligent. She used to say to me: ‘I’d like to be able to go to the park and play.’ She’s dead and so are her wishes.”

September 05, 2024

MAKKAH: Two Saudi citizens were awarded prestigious medals for their ground-breaking work at the Indonesia Inventors Day 2024 exhibition, which was held from Aug. 28 to 31 in Bali, Indonesia.

Rafeef Ayedh Alshahrani, a researcher from King Khalid University, won a gold medal for her innovation “AirEco,” which has the ability to detect and locate living beings in hard-to-reach mountainous terrain, where search efforts are typically hindered by challenging conditions.

By integrating advanced detection technologies with artificial intelligence, the device provides crucial support to rescue teams. It not only identifies precise locations but also executes functions to assist in rescue operations once the target is located.

It is one of the projects backed by the university’s Agency for Business and Community Partnership, through the Entrepreneurship Center.

The project has also earned four prestigious awards from Taiwan, Romania, Hong Kong and Thailand.

Reflecting on her achievement, she described it as a truly unique and fulfilling experience. She expressed the joy of seeing the fruits of her hard work over the past days and months, stating that the greatest reward was the pride and recognition from those around her. “It’s an incredible feeling,” she said.

“This accomplishment has fueled my desire to see it implemented quickly and made widely available,” she added. “I sincerely hope that authorities and companies will adopt the project, provide support, and help manufacture it to the highest standards so it can fully achieve its purpose.”

When asked how such achievements can positively influence Saudi participation in international competitions, she said: “Accomplishments serve as a powerful driving force for young people, pushing them toward their ambitions and future goals.

“The Kingdom’s Vision 2030, in particular, has become a major source of motivation, inspiring all Saudis to think creatively and pursue their aspirations.

“Saudi achievements have now become a source of national pride, shifting perspectives on the significance of success and its far-reaching impact. These accomplishments are key drivers of development, progress and prosperity.

“Beyond boosting individual self-confidence, they foster a positive mindset in society, encouraging leadership, innovation and the creation of economic opportunities. The impact of success doesn’t stop with the individual; it resonates throughout the community.”

Dr. Najia Al-Zanbagi, headmaster of Highly Innovative Unique Foundation, also earned a silver medal at the Indonesia Inventors Day 2024 for her remarkable work in medical parasitology.

“My contribution was a personal achievement: I authored a book on medical parasitology, using engaging, narrative-driven stories to simplify the complex scientific content and make it easier for learners to distinguish between various parasites.

“I first introduced this approach while teaching at King Abdulaziz University, and it was incredibly well received by students, who found the subject much more enjoyable and accessible.”

She aid that the book, titled “Lisan Al-Hal,” has now been published and is now available in the market.

Dr. Majid Al-Aziman, director of the Entrepreneurship Center at King Khalid University, emphasized the university’s commitment to supporting innovators, raising awareness and redefining the concept of entrepreneurship.

The university also seeks to spotlight the success of projects incubated by the Entrepreneurship Center and actively contribute to creating new job opportunities.

Iran Sentences Two Baha'i Women, Shiva Kashani-Nejad And MozhganSamimi, To Jail

SEPTEMBER 6, 2024

A Revolutionary Court in Iran's northern city of Rasht has sentenced two Baha'i women to prison terms and additional penalties.

Shiva Kashani-Nejad and MozhganSamimi, both residents of Rasht, have been sentenced to two years and one day in prison by the 3rd branch of the Rasht Revolutionary Court.

They were sentenced for educational activities and promoting matters related to the Baha'i faith, according to the Hengaw human rights organization.

Shiva Kashani-Nejad and MozhganSamimi were arrested in July 2023 during a raid on their home by security forces, during which personal belongings such as mobile phones, books, and children's storybooks were confiscated.

Baha'is have been systematically persecuted in Iran for 45 years because of their faith and are often accused of being spies or dissidents. No evidence has ever been provided to back these accusations.

Over the past two years, the government has intensified its crackdown on members of the Baha'i faith, imprisoning dozens of them on spurious charges, as well as denying them access to higher education and livelihoods, and confiscating or destroying personal property.

Attack On Protesters: Case Filed Against Former MinisterSimeen Hussain

Sep 6, 2024

A case has been filed against former Awami League lawmaker from Gazipur-4 constituency (Kapasia) Simeen Hussain Rimi and 31 others for allegedly attacking students in Gazipur on August 4 during the mass protests that ousted Awami League government.

Rimi, daughter of the first prime minister of Bangladesh Tajuddin Ahmed, served the state minister for Women and Children Affairs under Sheikh Hasina-led AL government.

Sajidul Islam, father of Sagar who was stabbed during the protest, filed the case with Kapasia Police Station yesterday, said Md Abu Bakar Mia, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Besides, 60 unidentified people have been accused in the case.

The complainant also brought allegations of illegal possession of explosives by the accused. It also alleged that the accused set fire to motorcycles and government structures.

According to the case statement, around 10:30am on August 4, nearly 70 to 80 students of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were going to Chalar market from Khirati school grounds.

When they crossed the Chalar Bazar bridge, the accused, instructed by Simeen Hussain Rimi, attacked the students from the opposite direction.

The attackers also threw bricks and exploded cocktails towards students.

The plaintiff's son Sagar was stabbed with machete. The attackers also injured 15 to 16 more people seriously.

5 to 6 motorcycles were set on fire by the accused at that time, added the statement.

The OC said necessary action will be taken after investigating the case.

Karnataka government withholds best teacher award to principal over his alleged 'anti-Hijab' stand

05.09.24

The Karnataka government has withheld its decision to bestow the best teacher award on a Principal of a government college over his alleged anti-Hijab stand at the peak of the head scarf row in the state two years ago, sources in the Education Department said on Thursday.

Ramakrishna B G, Principal of the Government Pre-University College at Kundapura in Udupi district, was supposed to receive the honour today on Teachers' Day but the decision was kept on hold after the Congress government drew flak from some activists of the Muslim community, the sources said.

"The reason behind the anger against the teacher is his alleged stand during the hijab row," a Department official said.

"The government had earlier announced his name but now it has been withheld," a source said.

Ramakrishna was not available for comment.

Reacting to the development, Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister MadhuBangarappa clarified that the award is only withheld and not cancelled.

"There was a government order regarding the issues those days it had happened. At that time the behaviour of the teacher was in question. That is the information I got after announcing the award. So I have told the department to check that and get back to me. So, till that it is only withheld. It has not been cancelled," the Minister told PTI.

When asked whether the decision was taken based on the allegations, he said people will say allegation and controversy but his department does not look at it that way.

"….but it’s my duty to check that and take the next step," Bangarappa said.

Explaining further, the minister said, "If he was wrong I would have immediately cancelled. If he is right then I would have already given. When something is in question it is my duty to check that, which I am going to do. That is what I have told my officers to do." He asked people not to politicise this issue.

BJP MLA from Mangalore City North constituency Y Bharath Shetty slammed the government saying that it insulted a teacher by succumbing to the "pressure created by Jihadi elements".

The Congress government in Karnataka has done a very shameful thing by withdrawing the best state level teachers' award to Ramakrishna B G. The state government had announced the award after following the check list and found him eligible for the award," Shetty said.

"The main reason behind withdrawing the award is that the Jihadi elements, the organisations like SDPI and PFI tweeted that this teacher should not be given this award because during the Hijab issue he had stopped the students wearing Hijab from entering the college," he said.

The MLA said Ramakrishna had only followed the then official order being a government servant. "It is very insulting for the teaching community that you announce an award and then you take it back because some Jehadi elements are forcing you to do so."

In the Islamic Republic of Iran, arresting and convicting women is a common practice of discrimination. The pressure on female activists increased during the Women, Life, Freedom (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi) movement. In its institutionalized form, the Islamic Republic has consistently worked to limit women's access to social, political, and human rights arenas. Gender apartheid policies in Iran are evident in the forms of sexual and gender segregation policies, as well as the criminalization of sexual and gender minorities' identities, which marginalizes them.

23 Cases of Femicide in August 2024:

During August 2024, at least 23 women were killed in different cities across Iran. Of these, 17 were killed by family members, including husbands, fathers, and sons.

By perpetrators:

6 women were killed by unknown individuals

Motivations:

2 women was killed for unknown reasons.

Breakdown of Femicide by Province:

  Tehran province: 6 cases

  Fars province: 4 cases

Hormozgan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, and Sistan and Baluchistan provinces: 2 cases each

Qom, Zanjan, Isfahan, Ilam, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Gilan, and Qazvin provinces: 1 case each

Femicide is regarded as the most extreme form of misogyny in society. Femicide only makes up a portion of the murders that are linked to honor killings. Laws, misogynistic relationships, and patriarchy are the main causes of femicide in societies. According to Hengaw's dataset, there were 122 recorded femicides in Iran in the year prior, and a large number of these killings were carried out by the victims' close relatives.

Laws and attitudes that promote misogyny and hatred towards women normalize the act of killing women, making it easier for predators to carry out their crimes with fewer repercussions

Iran's 'Pistol Queen' Bows Out with Fifth Paralympic Gold

SEPTEMBER 5, 2024

SarehJavanmardi, the best shooter in the history of Iranian sports, announced on Wednesday her retirement from professional competition.

The announcement came after her gold medal victory in the para shooting at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

Her victory in Paris earned her a fifth Paralympic gold medal. Her career includes gold medals from three consecutive Paralympics: two in Rio 2016, one in Tokyo 2020, and her final gold in Paris 2024.

The Asian Shooting Confederation, recognizing her dominance in the sport, nicknamed her "Iran's Pistol Queen".

Speaking to reporters after the 50m pistol competition, Javanmardi revealed that her retirement had been long in the planning.

"Today I am saying goodbye to the championship world, and this is a decision I made a long time ago," she said.

She explained that she had initially considered retiring after the Para-Asian games in Hangzhou, but was encouraged by her friends to conclude her career on the world stage in Paris.

"Thank God that I will return with my hands full and for the last time I was able to make my people, family, wife and child happy and stop shooting at the peak," Javanmardi said.

SarehJavanmardi has been celebrated as the most decorated Paralympic woman in Iran's history, a title she earned by winning the gold medal in the shooting para competition in Paris.

Born on December 8, 1984, in Shiraz, Javanmardi was born with one leg shorter than the other, but this did not stop her from pursuing sports. Until she was 18, she only exercised at gyms, unaware of Paralympic disciplines and not committing to any specific sport professionally.

In 2002, a chance conversation with a welfare worker introduced her to Paralympic sports, known in Iran as "veterans and disabled sports." That year, she took on chess, fitness training, tennis, and sitting volleyball. However, in 2006, she found her true calling in shooting para, winning her first medal - a silver - at the 2008 Spanish Shooting Championship.

Javanmardi's next major milestone came in 2012 when she won a bronze medal in pistol shooting at the London Paralympics. Two years later, she secured her first international gold by winning two golds at the 2014 Asian Games, marking the beginning of her dominance in world and Paralympic competitions.

She went on to win two gold medals at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, one gold at the World Championships in Croatia, two golds at the 2018 World Championships in the UAE, two more at the 2018 World Championships in South Korea, and another gold at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
