Qatar-Based Malayali Expat Fired From Job for Calling
Nurses ’Sex Slaves’ In the Hindu Maha Sammelan in His Home State
Sisupalan Durgadas (Phot:
Twitter/ @gokulchan)
-----
6th May 2022
A Qatar-based Malayali expat was fired from his job
for passing derogatory comments about nurses from his home state. The man,
identified as Sisupalan Durgadas, said that women who go to the Gulf as nurses
from Kerala are employed as”sex slaves for terrorists” while participating in
an event organised by a Hindu organisation.
After a video of him making those remarks surfaced
online, Sisupalan Durgadas was dismissed from his position of regional
coordinator of the Malayalam Mission, Qatar chapter as well. He was employed as
a senior accountant at Narang Projects in Qatar. He had made those statements
while participating in the Hindu Maha Samelan organised in Thiruvananthapuram.
The firm he worked for has its presence in Arab
countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Dubai. Addressing the gathering at
the Sammelan, he made distasteful comments about Muslims and the nursing
community. “Muslims have settled down in the Gulf, most of the women are hired
as nurses from Kerala and being employed as sex slaves for terrorists in the
region,” he had said.
Reacting to the man’s comments, a Twitter user,
Lieutenant Commander Gokulchan, said, “This is Durgadas Sishupalan. A certified
sanghi. He is working in Qatar and during Hindu Sammelan in Thiruvananthapuram,
he made a statement that nurses from Kerala go to Gulf countries to work as sex
slaves for militant groups. Nurses association has filed a complaint against
him.”
On May 5 the Malyalam Mission Qatar released a
termination letter expelling Das from the positiion of regional coordinator.
Durgadas discussed the matter on Facebook Live on
Friday. Durgadas claimed to have been a “proud Sangh Swayamsevak for nearly 30
years” and an NRI in the Gulf for around 20 years.
He said that throughout his stay in the Gulf, he
witnessed bogus recruiting organisations defrauding Indian women under the
guise of work in aviation, massage centres, and nursing. According to Durgadas,
these agencies functioned with the help of politicians. In collaboration with
Indian embassies, he claimed to have assisted in the repatriation of such
ladies.
Durgadas claimed he saw a movie about the state of
nurses in which Kevin Peter, a Christian Alliance for Social Action (CASA)
leader, was featured. Durgadas compared nurses to fairies and stated he
respected them.
Durgadas’s stand:
On Friday, Durgadas conducted a Facebook Live on the
controversy. Durgadas claimed he had been an NRI in the Gulf for about 20 years
and had been a “proud Sangh Swayamsevak for about 30 years”, reported The Week.
He said, during his time in the Gulf, he had observed
fraudulent recruitment agencies had cheated Indian women on the pretext of jobs
in sectors such as aviation, massage centers, and nursing. Durgadas alleged
these agencies operated with the connivance of politicians. He claimed he had
helped repatriate such women in coordination with the Indian embassies.
Durgadas said that he had seen a video on the
condition of nurses that featured Kevin Peter, an activist associated with the
Christian Alliance for Social Action (CASA). Durgadas said he respected nurses
and compared them to fairies.
Durgadas stated that he had been invited to the Hindu
Maha Sammelanam at Ananthapuri. Kevin Peter was on a panel at the event, and
Durgadas claimed he chose to pose a question based on a video he heard about
“terrorist organisations” recruiting nurses fraudulently. Many individuals,
according to Durgadas, were misled by the video footage of his query. “I
apologise to any nurses who were offended by my query,” he stated. However, I
will continue to report any terrorist recruitment agencies to the Center.”
He stated that he did not mind being referred to as a
“Sanghi.”

Hibatullah Akhundzada, Afghanistan’s Supreme Leader Orders Women To Wear
All-Covering Burqa in Public
07
May, 2022
Afghanistan’s
supreme leader and Taliban chief on Saturday ordered the country’s women to
wear the all-covering Burqa in public - one of the harshest controls imposed on
women’s lives since the group seized power.
“They
should wear a Chadori (head-to-toe Burqa) as it is traditional and respectful,”
said a decree issued by Hibatullah Akhundzada that was released by Taliban
authorities at a function in Kabul.
“Those
women who are not too old or young must cover their face, except the eyes, as
per sharia directives, in order to avoid provocation when meeting men who are
not mahram (adult close male relatives),” the decree said.
It
added that if women had no important work outside it was “better they stay at
home.”
During
their first regime between 1996 and 2001, the Taliban imposed similar
restrictions on women.

Bus
Rapid Transit System In Peshawar Gives Women A Ticket To Work And Study
May
07, 2022
PEHSAWAR:
Student
Mah Jabeen credits a new public bus system in her home city with saving her
from being stuck at her parents' house doing chores - or even having to get
married.
Thanks
to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Peshawar, 23-year-old Jabeen said she
had been able to continue her master's degree - keeping alive her dreams of
becoming a botanist.
"My
parents had decided to stop my education ... because they didn't like me
travelling in the dishevelled Mazda wagons," Jabeen said, referring to the
privately-run minibuses while sitting on a shiny BRT bus en route to college.
They
relented, she said, because the new bus stop was just a few minutes from her
front door and dropped her off at the university gates.
Launched
in 2020, the BRT has proved hugely popular among women in the
ultra-conservative city, where burqas and veils are standard female dress and
90% of women reported feeling unsafe using public transport in a 2016 survey.
Sexual
harassment such as staring, whistling and touching is widespread on buses or at
bus stops in Pakistan, making many women wary about travelling alone and
putting many off looking for paid work, according to the World Bank.
But
in Peshawar, a quarter of seats are reserved for women on the fleet of
diesel-electric hybrid buses, which are equipped with CCTV cameras, guards and
have well-lit stations, making female passengers feel more at ease.
About
15% of the BRT's 2,000 employees are female, too, said M Umair Khan, spokesman
for TransPeshawar, the government-owned company that operates the BRT.
He
said such changes helped explain why women now account for about 30% of bus
travellers in the city, up from just 2% two years ago.
Women
rarely ride bicycles or motorcycles in Pakistan, and taking rickshaws is
considered unsafe. Buses or shared vans packed with men put many women off, or
- like in Jabeen's case - lead family members to stop them from travelling on
them.
Such
issues help explain why Pakistan's female labour force participation rate is
among the lowest in the world, dipping to 23% in 2019 from about 24% in 2015,
World Bank data shows.
But
with frequent buses, dedicated lanes, subway-like stations, and improved
connectivity across the city, the BRT has made travel cheap and quick, as well
as safer.
Maximum
fares cost about Rs30, making the service especially popular among women from
low-income households. TransPeshawar employee Umme Salma said she used to spend
Rs280 to commute to and from work each day by rickshaw and private minibus. Not
only does she save a fortune in fares, her daily commute is shorter.
"I
also save a total of 30 minutes each day on travel time," Salma said.
