French
public schools have sent dozens of girls home for refusing to remove their
abayas – long, loose-fitting robes worn by some Muslim women and girls – on the
first day of the school year, according to Education Minister Gabriel Attal.
Defying
a ban on the garment seen as a religious symbol, nearly 300 girls showed up on
Monday morning wearing abayas, Attal told the BFM broadcaster on Tuesday.
Most
agreed to change out of the robe, but 67 refused and were sent home, he said.
The
government announced last month it was banning the abaya in schools, saying it
broke the rules on secularism in education that have already seen headscarves
forbidden on the grounds they constitute a display of religious affiliation.
The move
gladdened the political right but the hard left argued it represented an
affront to civil liberties.
The
34-year-old minister said the girls refused entry on Monday were given a letter
addressed to their families saying that “secularism is not a constraint, it is
a liberty”.
If they
showed up at school again wearing the gown there would be a “new dialogue”.
He added
that he was in favour of trialling school uniforms or a dress code amid the
debate over the ban.
Uniforms
have not been obligatory in French schools since 1968 but have regularly come
back on the political agenda, often pushed by conservative and far-right
politicians.
Attal
said he would provide a timetable later this year for carrying out a trial run
of uniforms with any schools that agree to participate.
“I don’t
think that the school uniform is a miracle solution that solves all problems
related to harassment, social inequalities or secularism,” he said.
But he
added: “We must go through experiments, try things out” in order to promote
debate, he said.
‘Worst
consequences’
Al
Jazeera’s Natacha Butler, reporting from Paris before the ban came into force
said Attal deemed the abaya a religious symbol which violates French
secularism.
“Since
2004, in France, religious signs and symbols have been banned in schools,
including headscarves, kippas and crosses,” she said.
“Gabriel
Attal, the education minister, says that no one should walk into a classroom
wearing something which could suggest what their religion is.”
On
Monday, President Emmanuel Macron defended the controversial measure, saying
there was a “minority” in France who “hijack a religion and challenge the
republic and secularism”.
He said
it leads to the “worst consequences” such as the murder three years ago of
teacher Samuel Paty for showing Prophet Muhammad caricatures during a civics
education class.
“We
cannot act as if the terrorist attack, the murder of Samuel Paty, had not
happened,” he said in an interview with the YouTube channel, HugoDecrypte.
An
association representing Muslims has filed a motion with the State Council,
France’s highest court for complaints against state authorities, for an
injunction against the ban on the abaya and the qamis, its equivalent dress for
men.
The
Action for the Rights of Muslims (ADM) motion is to be examined later on
Tuesday.

Rwanda Man Lured Prostitutes Home To Kill Them, 14 Bodies Found Buried In Kitchen
September
07, 2023
Kigali,
Rwanda: A man has been arrested in Rwanda after the discovery of more than 10
bodies buried in a hole in the kitchen of his home in the capital Kigali,
police and media reports said Wednesday. Police said the 34-year-old suspected
serial killer had lured his victims from bars to his rented home in a Kigali
suburb.
Local
media said more than 10 bodies had been found, and a source in the Rwanda
Investigation Bureau (RIB) told AFP on condition of anonymity that the number
of victims so far was 14.
RIB
spokesman Thierry Murangira declined to confirm a figure, telling AFP that
"the final number will be determined by forensic investigations".
The
suspect had initially been arrested in July on suspicion of robbery and rape
among other offences but was granted bail due to a lack of evidence, he said,
quoted by local media.
Investigations
continued however and he was rearrested on Tuesday and his home searched,
leading to the discovery of the bodies dumped in a pit he had dug in his
kitchen.
"The
suspect confessed that he learned to kill from watching famous serial killers.
He dissolved some of his victims in acid," the RIB source said.
"He
would study his victims before stalking them and usually went for those that
are most likely not to have close family or friends to look out for them."
Murangira
said the suspect had confessed during interrogation to the killings and that
preliminary investigations had found the victims were both male and female.
"He
operated by luring his victims, mostly prostitutes, to his home where he would
rob them of their phones and belongings and then strangled them to death and
buried them in a hole dug in the kitchen of his rented house," he added.

Undercover
UK Cop Tricks Woman Into 19-Year Relationship, Police Issue Apology
September
07, 2023
An
undercover British police officer used his fake identity to mislead a woman
into a 19-year relationship, during which they had a child together. The truth
came to light in 2020, shortly after their engagement, according to The
Guardian.
The
newspaper further reported that it remains unclear why the officer developed
the relationship, as there was no indication that the woman was the intended
subject of any surveillance operation. The Avon and Somerset Police have issued
an apology in response to the situation.
"While
working in an undercover role, a former officer engaged in an inappropriate
relationship with a member of the public using their pseudonym. The member of
the public has no connection with policing, and until recently they were
entirely unaware of their links to an undercover police officer," the
police force said in the apology.
"We
are sorry. We recognise and understand the devastating and appalling impact
this has had on all those affected, and we have taken and continue to take our
duty of care to them extremely seriously. Our commitment to support them is
unwavering, and our genuine and sincere intention is to ensure they're getting
the support they need both now and in the future," the police department
said.
The
newspaper further mentioned that the police officer had concealed his real
identity from the woman for the duration of that period, never telling her his
real occupation and using his fictitious identity on the birth certificate of
their son.
Listen
to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com
n 2020,
after the couple were engaged to be married, the woman discovered that her
fiance, whom she believed to be a businessman, was in fact a police officer who
had subjected her to a sophisticated deception lasting almost two decades.
An
investigation is currently underway against the senior officers at Avon and
Somerset Police, who were fully aware of the undercover officer's relationship
with the woman dating as far back as 2013.

OIC
Strongly Condemns Forcing Five Palestinian Women To Strip Search By Israeli
Solders In Hebron
06/September/2023
JEDDAH,
Wednesday, September 6, 2023 (WAFA) – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation
(OIC) strongly condemned what it described as a heinous crime against five
Palestinian women, who were forced to strip naked by Israeli sliders during a
military raid into Hebron in July.
According
to Haaretz, two masked Israeli women soldiers with rifles and an attack dog
forced five female members of a Palestinian family to strip naked in the West
Bank city of Hebron in July. The soldiers threatened to release the dog if the
women did not comply, reported Haaretz.
OIC
renewed its call for the concerned international organizations to assume their
responsibilities by pressuring Israel, the occupying power, to stop its daily
violations of human rights in the Palestinian territories and to prosecute it
legally and criminally before the competent international bodies.

Mahsa
Amini’s Father Tells VOA About Plans to Commemorate Daughter’s Death
September
06, 2023
The
father of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old Iranian woman whose death in police
custody last year sparked months of anti-government protests, tells VOA that
plans are under way to commemorate the anniversary of his daughter's death.
"We
are resolute in organizing the anniversary ceremony to pay tribute to the name
and memory of Zhina [Mahsa], the martyr, the oppressed, the innocent girl, and
for the happiness of her pure soul," Amjad Amini said in an exclusive
interview with VOA’s Persian Service.
“It also
provides solace for the family, relatives and all her supporters. However,
given the current circumstances, we cannot formally extend invitations to the
public or dissuade them from attending.”
Mahsa
Amini had been detained by the morality police for allegedly wearing her
headscarf too loosely. Iran saw months of anti-government protests after her
death in police custody last September 16.
According
to data from human rights organizations, Iran’s security forces killed nearly
600 people, including women and children, with several thousand more sustaining
injuries during a crackdown on the protests. More than 20,000 Iranian citizens
found themselves detained in the aftermath.
"Today,
it's widely acknowledged that Mahsa doesn't belong exclusively to the Amini
family. She is Iran's daughter, belonging to the entire nation. All those who
cherish Mahsa are akin to her extended family. Thus, we will honor whatever
choice the people make," her father told VOA.
In a
written exchange with VOA correspondent ManouchehrPordel, he said Iranian
government officials "wish for us not to extend any invitations under any
conditions and refrain from urging individuals to attend the ceremony.”
While
discussing the legal aspects of his daughter's case, Amjad Amini said, "Up
to this point, we haven't obtained any clear and persuasive responses. They've
essentially reiterated their previous statements, which haven't been
satisfactory for us or the public.”
Iranian
police said Mahsa Amin had a heart attack while in custody, but her family
disputes that claim. Iranian authorities have rejected the family's request for
a committee of independent doctors to investigate her death.
In
August, Amnesty International accused Iran of ramping up a campaign of
harassment and intimidation against the families of those killed in last year’s
protests. The group said it documented the cases of 36 victims’ families from
10 provinces across the country who have been subjected to human rights
violations in recent months.
