In an auspicious moment during this year’s Hajj
pilgrimage, a Pakistani woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy on the sacred
Mount Arafat on Saturday, the Day of Arafat.
The new-born, weighing in at 3.04kg, has been aptly
named “Arafat” in honour of the revered location where the momentous event took
place, Gulf News reported.
The mother, who has requested to remain anonymous, was
in her 37th week of pregnancy when she went into labour amidst the millions of
pilgrims gathered on the mountain.
“The birth of a child is always a blessing, but
witnessing it during Hajj is particularly special,” said Dr Amina Al Sheikh,
who led the medical team that attended to the delivery. Both the mother and the
baby are reported to be in stable condition and under observation for further
check-ups.
The Day of Arafat holds immense spiritual significance
in the Islamic calendar, as it symbolises forgiveness and mercy. The arrival of
baby Arafat has added a unique and divine touch to this year’s holy pilgrimage
for his parents and the broader Muslim community.

Adventure Athlete Samar Khan First Pakistani Woman To
Climb Europe's Highest Peak
17 Jun 2024
She proudly flies national flag at the summit
---------------
Adventure athlete Samar Khan conquered Mount Elbrus,
the highest peak in Europe, and descended the 5,642-metre summit by
snowboarding, marking a historic achievement as the first Pakistani woman to
accomplish this feat.
From Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Dir district, Samar reached
the summit at 10am local time, proudly hoisting Pakistan's flag. She has now
made history as the first Pakistani woman to snowboard down Mount Elbrus.
"I am thrilled to share that I have successfully
ascended Europe's highest peak, Mt Elbrus, and accomplished a snowboarding
descent, making history as the first Pakistani to achieve this milestone in the
world of action sports," she wrote on Instagram.
"I set out for the summit push around 3am and
reached the top by 10am with a green flag, followed by an exhilarating
snowboarding descent from Elbrus," she added by thanking everyone for the
support.
It must be noted that Samar is the first woman in the
world to have cycled on the third-largest non-polar glacial system, Biafo
Glacier and Godwin Austen Glacier, in the Karakoram mountains of Gilgit
Baltistan.
When her sports endeavours were not recognised in her
own country, the ESPNW Global Sports Mentoring Program selected her to be
mentored by top sports executives in the United States.
She also summited an unclimbed peak of 5610m in
Shimshal, Gilgit Baltistan, with a snowboarding descent. The mountain was later
named after her as ‘Ghar e Samar’ (Pashto).
After being mentored by Burton Snowboards in Vermont,
she not only excelled as a snowboarder but also founded her initiative, ‘Samar
Camp’, through which she offers sports camps like mountain biking, backpacking,
and snowboarding for girls and women in Pakistan.
Khan won a silver medal in the Sadia Khan Championship
in 2022 and emerged as the winner of the Red Bull Homerun snowboarding category
in 2021.

Iranian woman faces 18 years in prison for condemning
Oct. 7 attacks
JUNE 17, 2024
Prominent Iranian political prisoner FatemehSepehri,
who in the past has criticized the Islamic Republic, has been sentenced to an
additional 18 and a half years in prison after condemning the Hamas October 7
attacks and supporting Israel, a Thursday report from Iran International said.
According to the report, Sepehri has been suffering
from a heart ailment and ill health during her time in prison as an Iranian
dissident.
Regardless of her condition and imprisonment, Sepehri
decided to issue a statement supporting Israel following October 7, which the
Islamic regime in Iran viewed as a clear act of defiance.
“I condemn Hamas’s attack on Israel and say loudly
that the Iranian nation stands by the Israeli nation. The Islamic Republic and
its agents spend Iran’s wealth to buy bullets and attack Israel. We, the people
of Iran, neither want war nor the killing of defenseless people. I again
condemn Hamas’s attack. Since the rise to power of Ali Khamenei and the
founding of the Islamic Republic, the Middle East has not seen peace,” the Iran
International report translated her statement to say.
The report said that Sepephri's total of 18.5 years in
prison could be broken down to multiple charges that include seven years of
imprisonment for supporting Israel, another seven years for gathering and
collusion to conspire against national security, three years for insulting
Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and a one year and six months sentence for
propaganda against the Islamic republic.
Last December, a collective of 55 female leaders from
across the Middle East, including representatives from the Muslim, Christian,
Druze, and Jewish communities of 12 countries, issued a public denunciation of
Hamas and its supporter, the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Natalie Dau, an Ultra Marathoner Ran Singapore To
Thailand 12 Days, Says Heat Melted Her Shoes
Jun 17, 2024
NEW DELHI: Natalie Dau, a 52-year-old ultramarathoner,
recently completed an astonishing feat by running 1,000 kilometres across
Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore in just 12 days. Facing extreme heat and a
severe hip injury, Ms Dau pushed through, covering the distance of two
marathons each day.
Her journey ended in Singapore on June 5, setting the
Singapore record for the "Fastest 1,000km Thailand-Singapore
Ultramarathon" and awaiting certification from Guinness World Records for
the "Fastest Crossing of Peninsular Malaysia on Foot." "Today is
the first time in four days I have questioned if I would actually finish this
thing. I love the challenge of the sport, love the rawness of it all, but hate
these low points. And they come often," she told BBC.
Ms Dau's run raised over $50,000 for the global
charity GRLS, which supports women and girls through sports, aiming to develop
their leadership skills. "Whether you come in first or last, it doesn't
matter. You've done something almost superhuman, something that 0.05% of the
world's population will never do," she said.
Running in temperatures as high as 35 degrees Celsius,
Dau's shoes melted, and she battled a hip injury from the very first day. By
Day 3, she developed a urinary tract infection.
Despite these challenges, Dau persevered, covering at
least 84 kilometres each day. Throughout the run, Ms Dau kept her supporters
updated through nightly voice messages, sharing both her successes and
challenges. Her team played a crucial role in her success, ensuring safety and
meticulously planning logistics.
Dau's accomplishment goes beyond personal achievement.
She hopes her journey will inspire others, particularly women and older
individuals, to challenge their own limits. The physical toll of the run was
immense, with Ms Dau describing waking up each day as the "scariest"
part, fearing she might not be able to continue. Despite the exhaustion,
blistered toes, and the overwhelming urge to see her family, she persevered.
"The finish line is so far away, you can't envisage it," she said.
